The result is a bird that more or less chugs through the water.

Picture how a chicken’s head moves as it walks on land, and you’ll have the movement of a coot on water.

Coots actually are not ducks – or chickens – at all, but members of the rail family. Rails are seasonal inhabitants of area marshes; they are sometimes heard but seldom seen.

Virginia rails, for example, have nested at St. Charles Park District’s Hickory Knolls Natural Area, but rarely were detected by passing visitors.

Cryptically colored, rails blend in well with their surroundings.

They also have thin, laterally compressed bodies that allow them to

You just gotta love a coot. An American coot, that is.

American coots are water birds that many folks would classify as ducks.

They do, after all, look an awful lot like dark-colored ducks – from a distance.

But if you take the time to observe more closely, you’ll notice that the bill is white, with a dark vertical mark near the tip.

It’s conically shaped, not flattened. One would be inclined to say it’s more chicken-like than ducklike.

Furthermore, coots don’t quack like ducks, they kuk. A raspy, kukkuk, kuk-kuk-kuk – almost like the cluck of a chicken.

Finally, coots most certainly do not swim like ducks.

Ducks glide smoothly through the water, driven by two webbed feet ideally suited to aquatic conveyance.

The coot? Well, coots swim all right, but instead of webs their feet

‘A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY EVENT’ Check-Out Challenge competition collects food for local pantries

bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The contestants lined up at the starting gate Friday at the Jewel-Osco in Batavia, shopping carts decorated with metallic fringe and balloons. Supporters lined up behind them.

Then, after a whistle blast, a shout and a warning to those who happened to be shopping at Jewel, the 15th annual Food Check-Out Challenge Shopping Spree competition began.

Sponsored by the Kane County Farm Bureau, the event gives two contestants five minutes to compete in a grocery shopping spree of nonperishable items to support food pantries of their choice. The farm bureau pays for the food collected, bureau President Joe White said.

“Come on, T. R.,” supporter Barbara Brust hollered at him, as he tossed corn chips and tortillas into his cart.

“Come on, T.R., move it.”

Other supporters shouted similar exhortations to Sam to hurry up, as he fairly flew through the pasta aisle, grabbing noodles and sauce.

A moment later, Smith turned a corner too fast and nearly careened into a pasta sauce display before getting control of his cart and adding the same items to his food collection.

Each side was followed by supporters who would take away the full cart and hand off an empty one, as Tom Hong, the retail liaison for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, kept announcing how many minutes, then seconds, were left.

The farm bureau suddenly extended the shopping spree by a minute, Hong announced into the store’s public address system, telling Smith and Sam not to stop or slow down.

“Come on, this is for charity,” Hong said.

And then it was over. Smith and Sam each collected five carts full. The final pre-tax tally for all the food collected was Smith at $937.65 and Sam at $660.22.

“This is one of the greatest experiences I ever had,” Smith said. “To do this for that people that really need it, and the farm bureau behind it and me being a farmer, says so much about the caring of the farm bureau and the people involved in the organization.”

Fire causes $70,000 in damage to St. Charles home KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

ST. CHARLES – A fire Thursday night caused an estimated $70,000 in damage to a home on the city’s east side, displacing the residents, according to a St. Charles Fire Department news release.

Firefighters were called to 1715 S. Seventh Ave. at 9:21 p.m. and arrived a minute later because a fire engine came from another call in the immediate area, the release states.

The release indicated firefighters found a fire involving the rear of the home on the outside that had extended into the basement and a first-floor bathroom. Although the fire was extinguished in about 40 minutes, firefighters remained on the

scene to complete salvage and overhaul as well as to conduct the fire investigation, according to the release.

The fire is not considered suspicious, the release states. No injuries to the occupants or firefighters were reported.

The release noted that smoke detectors awakened the residents, who discovered smoke on the first floor, exited the home and called 911.

According to the release, the home is not habitable, and the Red Cross responded to the scene and planned to assist the residents. The St. Charles Fire Department received assistance from the Geneva, Batavia and West Chicago fire departments on the scene. The Elburn and Fermilab fire departments covered calls while St. Charles units were at the fire.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A St. Charles man, who was accused of a “one-night crime spree” in July 2015, pleaded guilty this month to one count of felony burglary and was sentenced to three years in prison, court records show.

According to Kane C o u n t y J u d g e J o h n Joshua Barsanti’s order, Josh- Almodovar ua Almodovar, 24, is recommended for boot camp and also will have two years of mandatory supervision when he is released.

Almodovar also will receive credit for the 206 days he already served in

the Kane County jail.

Almodovar originally was charged with one count of residential burglary and five counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, all felonies, records show.

As part of the plea deal, Almodovar will not be prosecuted on five other felony charges he had faced.

In the overnight hours of June 15, Almodovar and two others were accused of going “car hopping,” which is slang for burglarizing vehicles, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz had said when they were arrested.

Kintz had described the stolen items as “all miscellaneous things,” such as keys, cellphone chargers, flashlights, an I-Pass, a handicap placard, a bag and cash.

Kane County is now part of a broader effort to develop a regional plan to attract and leverage foreign direct investment, according to a news release issued Friday.

The Chicago Regional Growth Initiatives – a seven-county collaboration that includes Kane County to further regional economic growth – has been selected to participate in the Global Cities Initiative, the release states.

According to the release, foreign direct investment happens when a foreign company invests in a U.S. business by opening a new operation or through a merger or acquisition.

U.S. operations of foreign firms “contribute inordinately to the economy,” the release states.

The Chicago region joins five other metro areas, including Indianapolis and Phoenix, in developing foreign direct investment plans.

“Working together is the most ef-

fective way for the seven counties and the city of Chicago to promote the amenities of our world-class businesses, the diversity of our communities and the power of our highly skilled workforce,” Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen stated in the release. “From the Chicago Loop to the farmers’ fields, our region is making and growing products that fuel the global economy.”

The Global Cities Initiative is a joint project of the Brookings Institution and JPMorgan Chase.

In the release, Brookings fellow Marek Gootman stated that the cities were selected for their commitment to attracting, expanding and leveraging foreign direct investment.

“The six metro areas selected will be strong role models for other regions and represent a growing group of leaders who understand the need to embrace the global market and solidify and strengthen international connections and competitiveness,” Gootman stated in the release.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 potentially could have months to sell voters on a referendum addressing its middle schools – a focus officials acknowledged is confusing to many in the wake of the recent consideration to close buildings.

“I’m not sure the rest of the community is there yet,” Superintendent Don Schlomann told the school board Thursday.

He explained that the public’s general reaction is, “Huh? How did this come about?”

After months of collecting feedback, the board in January decided not to close schools and instead directed the administration to develop

a plan addressing the quality of the facilities and enrollment at the middle schools.

Board President Steve Spurling noted that although the board has talked about the need to upgrade the middle schools for years, the community doesn’t have the same information the board does.

Member Jim Gaffney said the district is in a “very, very unique position” to address those needs with a referendum because taxpayers already are poised to save money with the upcoming retirement of bonds.

If the referendum is successful, he said, they will just get a smaller savings.

On Thursday, the board generally favored a plan that would renovate Thompson Middle School and close Haines Middle School.

What a refurbished Thompson might look like won’t be known until after a successful referendum as a way to control costs, Schlomann said.

He said conceptual ideas will be presented before the referendum.

Schlomann, who has been involved with referendums at four districts, suggested developing a comprehensive public engagement process that would include social media and face-to-face elements.

Board members were receptive to that idea.

“I want what the community wants us to do with this,” Lori Linkimer said.

Voters might get to act on the issue as early as November, or they might have to wait until April 2017 – the board hasn’t yet decided.

Ed McNally said the national election might overshadow local issues in November, but Corinne Pierog noted an April election likely will result in a lower voter turnout.

Schlomann said a spring referendum could be difficult with the school board election, but the quick turnaround for a November referendum also concerns him.

“I agree with Dr. Schlomann [that] the time is probably our biggest factor,” Nick Manheim said.

“We’re already getting into March next week.”

Whatever is decided, Pierog said the referendum also should include improvements for Wredling Middle School.

Otherwise, she said, it will be a west side referendum the east side will be paying for.

bodies considered broad by rail standards, usually leave little doubt as to their presence.

Their habits are quite conspicuous; in fact ornithologists have cataloged some 14 different displays coots use to communicate amongst themselves.

They vary their body postures to show their white undertail coverts; arch their wings; cause their neck feathers to stand erect; and even swell their already-pronounced frontal “nose” shield in response to various activities in their midst.

When the time comes to leave an area, coots once again exhibit an inimitable style.

They commence with much flapping and scrambling, splattering and splashing, literally smacking their way across the water before finally taking flight.

As far as diet is concerned, coots are anything but fussy.

Although the bulk of their intake typically is composed of aquatic plants, they’ll also consume insects, crustaceans and even small vertebrates like tadpoles – especially during breeding season.

They also will take advantage of their waterfowl neighbors, snatch-

ing plants from dabbling ducks and helping themselves to diving ducks’ leftovers.

In fact, this opportunistic approach to feeding may be one reason I was lucky enough to encounter several coots just the other day.

I was walking along the Fox River Trail, the stretch directly across Route 25 from Langum Park.

If you’re familiar with that area, you might be able to picture the discharge pipe that releases a steady flow of water from the City of St. Charles’s sewage treatment plant into the river.

In general, up and down the Fox, wherever there’s a discharge pipe, there’s a good chance of finding wildlife of many types.

The influx of nutrients aids plant growth and fosters many other microorgranisms that are essential links in aquatic food chains.

Small fish consume these wee beasts and are in turn consumed by larger creatures, and so on, and so on…

The coots I saw, six in total, were dabbling, diving and seemingly having a grand time taking in the bounty of this rich area.

So much so, in fact, that they actually didn’t notice me and my noisy, conspicuous, coot-like ways.

I was even able to snap a couple of photos before they did detect me,

and my camera, and took off amid much flailing and spattering.

If you’d like to try your hand at coot watching, you could certainly head to that stretch of the Fox River, which is just south of the Prairie Street bridge.

(If you do go, look for lots of other waterfowl too, including common mergansers, common goldeneyes and buffleheads.)

Other good bets are the lakes at Fermilab, where small numbers of coots have been sighted all winter.

Once the ice is gone and spring is here to stay, look for nesting coots at Nelson Lake Marsh, within the Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia.

Train your eyes to look for dark, duck-like birds about 15 to 16 inches in length – notably smaller than our ubiquitous mallard ducks – with a white bill, black head, dark-gray body and dark, reddish-brown eyes.

The coot’s distinctive white bill and bobbing swim motions soon will give it away.

Then sit back and enjoy the fun.

GENEVA – A Geneva jewelry store has partnered with Mutual Ground on a program designed to provide the Aurora-based nonprofit with a reliable source of revenue, according to a news release.

Participants of Mutual Ground GEMs will receive a custom piece of jewelry from State Street Jewelers, 230 W. State St., Geneva, when they pledge to donate at least $40 every month to Mutual Ground, the release states.

The piece of jewelry, which was unveiled Wednesday, can be made into a lapel pin or pendant, according to the release.

It noted that State Street Jewelers will add a diamond to the piece, free of charge, for every year a donor participates.

Kane County Board chairman: Lauzen

In the March 15 Republican primary race for Kane County Board chairman, incumbent Chris Lauzen faces challenger Ken Shepro.

Before being elected chairman of the County Board in 2012, Lauzen, an Aurora resident, served as an Illinois senator for 20 years. He also is a certified public accountant.

Shepro is an attorney and resident of Wayne. He previously served as an attorney for the County Board.

We endorse Lauzen in this race.

Since becoming chairman, Lauzen has followed through on his initial campaign pledge of working with County Board members to freeze the property tax levy.

In addition, he has avoided unnecessary lawsuits where taxpayer money is used to fund legal representation, something we encouraged him to do in our general election endorsement of him four years ago.

During his tenure as chairman, Lauzen has helped the county reduce its total debt by about 50 percent.

And although it doesn’t necessarily have a huge price tag attached to it, we commend Lauzen on his dedication to returning constituent

messages.

Shepro said his top priority as chairman would be to restore balance and civility to county government, noting that the chairman’s feud with the county coroner needs to end.

We also acknowledge the rocky relationship between the chairman and coroner, and – should both be re-elected in November – we encourage them to find a way to work together more constructively.

If Shepro were elected chairman, he said he would end the Kane County Connects communication platform and use the money put toward it to restore cuts to external riverboat grants.

He also would seek to increase funding for the Ride in Kane program and restore the position of economic development director for the county.

Should Lauzen be re-elected, he said he would look to spend his next term expanding fiber optics in the county, investing efforts in technology that converts waste to fuel and improving cellphone reception throughout the county by leveraging existing infrastructure.

ENDORSEMENT

Kane County coroner (R): Russell

During his first term as the Kane County coroner, Rob Russell has worked to restore integrity to an office in need of improvement.

Russell is being challenged by Dr. Bob Tiballi for the Republican nomination in the March 15 primary election.

The previous coroner, Chuck West, had been charged with official misconduct and died before going to trial. Russell vowed to bring professionalism to the office, and he has done that in several areas. He worked to provide a proper burial for the cremated remains of dozens of people after discovering the cremains on a shelf in the office. He reclassified the death of a Geneva woman after an investigation into one of West’s rulings. His office achieved national accreditation.

appealing candidate, as he was when he ran against Russell four years ago. His medical background gives him relevant experience. He pointed out that he has earned a Master of Business Administration within the past four years.

Russell has been criticized over his budget, with critics questioning promotional items he has bought, as well as the amount he sought for the budget. He has clashed with Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen.

There is room for improvement in that area, and Tiballi – from what it seems – would have a greater chance for a positive relationship with the Kane County Board and its chairman.

Russell’s achievements in his first term have been significant. He is endorsed for the GOP nomination.

ENDORSEMENT

Kane County coroner (D): Martinez

Four years ago, Tom Martinez, the Democratic candidate who then went by the first name Tao, lost to Republican Rob Russell in the general election race to become Kane County coroner.

In the 2000 general election, John Shoemaker, a Democratic candidate, was defeated by Republican Chuck West in his bid to become county coroner.

In the March 15 primary election, Shoemaker and Martinez will seek the Democratic nomination in the coroner race. The candidates, who both are from North Aurora, are strong and qualified. Shoemaker has years of experience as a nurse and also serves as an Aurora Township highway commissioner. Martinez runs a company that specializes in decontamination and restoration of biohazard environments as a result of deaths and accidents.

Martinez is endorsed for the Democratic nomination. Shoemaker brings relevant skills, with a combination of work in the medical field and in public administration.

Martinez’s professional background is ideally suited for the work of a coroner. Martinez said he will aim to prepare for such emergencies as a mass-casualty situation.

Russell’s term has included frequent clashes with Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen over issues such as his budget, and both Martinez and Shoemaker said they would work to cooperate better with the board.

Also, both candidates criticized Russell for bought promotional items.

Martinez and Shoemaker said the promotional items were not a good use of money, and they vowed to carefully monitor costs.

ccasey@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – Friday’s IHSA boys swimming and diving state preliminaries were both a new and old experience for the Myhre family.

While St. Charles North senior Joe Myhre has competed at state for the past couple of seasons, his freshman brother, Will, experienced a whole new world.

The big stage didn’t affect him one bit.

Will Myhre took first in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.97 seconds) to earn the top seed in today’s finals. He also took part in the North Stars’ 200 freestyle relay with Joe Myhre, Stephen Hutchinson and Jack Williams that finished fourth (1:24.50). The 200 free relay will compete in finals, as well.

“I wanted to get up and race and go all out,” Will Myhre said. “It’s some-

thing you work toward all season. All that hard work goes into getting to this weekend, you know. Especially swimming with my brother. I mean, I look up to him a ton and that’s helped me so much. ... I asked him like a million questions and kept bugging him. He knows everything about this, he’s a pro here, and it helped me feel a lot more comfortable.”

Joe Myhre was no slouch Friday either, taking second in his top event, the 100 freestyle (45.14). Along with the relay he swam with his brother, Joe also helped the North Stars start the day off strong, teaming up with Hutchinson, Nathan Bawolek and Kieran Murphy to take fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:33.65).

When asked whether he was surprised at the success of his brother in his first go-around at state, Joe Myhre couldn’t help but crack a smile.

“I didn’t really say much to him be-

fore the race other than to just have fun,” Joe Myhre said. “If anything was surprising, it was his time. I mean, that’s pretty quick. But no, I believe in him and he should have all the confidence in the world that he can go out and swim the same or even better tomorrow.”

While Will Myhre will experience heightened competition in today’s finals, the same can be said for Marmion sophomore Will Kamps and St. Charles East sophomore Mitchell Milosch. Both will take part in their first state finals.

Kamps qualified in the 500 freestyle (4:33.94), taking fourth in prelims to book a spot in the championship finals, while Milosch will swim in two events today – the finals of the 100 butterfly and the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke.

Go East for riveting regional

Well, February technically houses the first few days of IHSA Class 3A and 4A boys basketball regionals, but once March arrives, it’s go time. Look no further than the Class 4A St. Charles East Regional, where all four Tri-Cities schools potentially could land in the semifinals.

“It’s going to be tough,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “You have to play well regardless of who the matchups are at this time, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Burlington Central and Kaneland earned top seeds in their respective 3A regionals, as well.

Here’s a breakdown of how brackets could play out next week and possibly beyond: Best area bet to win a regional: Burlington Central at Class 3A Glenbard South Regional. The Rockets (25-3. 13-1 Big Northern Conference East) have been as steady as any team around this season.

Burlington Central will get the winner of the Wheaton Academy-St. Francis game in a semifinal and should have its way.

The Rockets then would play the winner of a semifinal between host Glenbard South and, most likely, Marmion. The Cadets could provide an interesting matchup for Burlington Central, but the Rockets’ poise figures to put them over the top.

Best potential regional final: Geneva vs.

Batavia at Class 4A St. Charles East Regional, 7 p.m. Friday. This matchup was chosen solely because of the rivalry the two schools have.

There’s no question it would be an equally intriguing regional championship to see the Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion Bulldogs battle East, as well. I expect the likely semifinal between the Saints and Geneva to be one of the better games of the season. Batavia won at home and lost on the road to both East and Geneva in River play.

In either matchup, Batavia senior guard Canaan Coffey will have something to say about the outcome.

Potential dark horse: East. The Saints have been overlooked for much of the season while dealing with injuries. East recently welcomed point guard James McQuillan back, and he seems to be gaining confidence in each outing after breaking a

bone in his foot in early December. Coach Pat Woods just “wanted his team to survive the middle of the season, and think they did just that.”

With the Saints’ ability to knock down 3-pointers, along with the unselfish play they showed in their regular-season finale win over Batavia, this could be a sneaky team to watch well into March.

Best first-round matchup: St. Charles North vs. Bartlett at Class 4A St. Charles East Regional quarterfinal, 6 p.m. Monday. This matchup might have more than meets the eye when looking at not only the two teams’ records, but what has happened this season. Bartlett easily handled the North Stars, 57-40, in the middle of the season, but that was against a different North team. The North Stars have beaten Jacobs, Larkin and Elgin over the past few weeks, and lost on a buzzer beater to East.

“You want to be playing your absolute best basketball at this point in the season, and I think records can be thrown out and we’re playing well right now,” North senior guard Mikey Schroeder said.

The winner of this quarterfinal faces top-seeded Batavia on Tuesday.

• SWIMMING Continued from page 21 “I started out pretty strong (in the 500),” said Kamps, who took 12th in the 500 freestyle race at last season’s state meet. “I tried to stay with the leader, but he pulled ahead, so I kind of held back a little and raced the kid next to me. I was hoping top six, for sure. I’m pretty excited and I know I’ll be much more nervous tomorrow, but I have pretty hopeful expectations.”

Milosch will also swim as part of the 200 freestyle relay for the Saints in the consolation finals, as will Nick Boryk, Matt Nagler, John Cranfill and Kyle Dunlap in the 400 freestyle relay.

No divers were able to make a dent in the scoring to earn a spot in the finals today, as North’s Michael Burke (186.70) took 22nd, six spots short of the cut (194.65). East’s Andrew Lewarchick struggled Friday with a 37th overall finish (164.10) after setting a pool record at the St. Charles North Sectional last weekend.

Batavia sophomore Garrett Clasen was the lone West Chicago-Batavia coop swimmer to advance to a finals race today, placing 10th in the 200 IM (1:53.12) for a spot in the consolation finals.

Clasen also took part in the 200 medley relay with teammates Ryan Sego, Cooper Hawkins and Keegan Hawkins, but the four did not earn a spot in today’s finals.

Marmion wrestler, on the Cadets eyeing three victories to win the Class 3A dual team state championship this season. Jaffe (138 pounds) and Stanford-bound Nathan Traxler (182) helped the Cadets build further momentum at last weekend’s individual state tournament, earning titles at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign.

Marmion’s new destination might be a different segment of central Illinois, but its focus is nonetheless concentrated.

“Keep working, keep pushing,” sophomore 160-pounder Nate Jimenez said. “We’re not done yet.”

Marmion is making the program’s fourth successive trip to the team dual state tournament.

The Cadets finished as runner-up to Sandburg in 2013 and placed third one year later.

Marmion officials whisked wrestlers Mikey Callahan, Trace Carello, Riley DeMoss, AJ Jaffe and Nathan Traxler from the school cafeteria to the faculty dining room between midday college signing ceremonies in November.

There, the Cadets quintet eventually conversed about what all Marmion matmen have conversed about this season: Earning a Class 3A dual team state tournament title.

The Cadets have taken their first two steps toward that end, winning a regional title at Naperville North this month before edging Sandburg, 29-26, at Tuesday’s Argo Sectional.

Marmion meets rival Montini in a state quarterfinal at 11 a.m. today at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington needing three victories to secure its ultimate goal.

“That’s what it’s all about,” said Jaffe, a Harvard recruit from St. Charles. “That’s what we all have been working for.”

Chicago Soccer Academy director of coaching Tim Balatsoukas was born in Greece, went to college in Elgin and now lives in St. Charles.

“The beautiful game” has fueled him at those stops and all others in between. Speaking with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Balatsoukas relayed his passion for soccer and the recently formed, St. Charles-based CSA, which now counts 350 registered families between its club operations in the Tri-Cities and Sycamore. CSA, found online at csasocceracademy.com, has boys and girls teams from U7 through U14, and plans a high school team tryout in May. Here’s an edited transcript of Druley’s conversation with Balatsoukas this week:

What does late February bring for CSA?

We’re in the middle of our indoor soccer season now, playing indoor games and practicing. We move to outdoor in April. … Everybody’s itching to get back outdoors, right?

We’re doing a couple top tournaments, going to Memphis with our travel teams in a week just to kind of get back to playing outdoors and in warmer weather. Then we actually have a junior academy for 3- to 10-year-old kids that’s wrapping up right now. Then we’re just getting registration going for the spring one.

And that’s basically our grassroots program, just getting kids to love the game, teaching them the fundamentals. It could be for beginners. It could be for advanced players. Each player is split up according to their skill level, gender and age, and then we have allocated coaches for the different levels. We start that in April.

Take me through the club’s history a bit.

So this is actually our second year.

We opened up a location in Sycamore, and now I came here in May [2015], so it’s kind of approaching our one-year anniversary in this area. I was a former director in the area of another club, and I ended up opening

CHIT-CHAT TIM BALATSOUKAS CHICAGO SOCCER ACADEMY up my own just because my vision was different. All I’ve done is soccer my whole life, you know. I played pro over in Europe, I came to the U.S. on a soccer scholarship and then I ended up working in soccer. I have a different approach to soccer when it comes to giving back to the game, just from playing it and getting benched, being the worst player. I’ve experienced those things, so when we teach the kids, it’s easy to translate to them, to relate to them and kind of motivate them to just keep pushing, because you never know what they’re going to become when it comes to soccer. Kids develop at different times, and we just need to continue to educate parents and give their kids a shot, you know.

Sometimes, parents see their kids and say, ‘Oh, they’re not going to be a soccer player.’ Well, you don’t know that until the kid’s fully developed, when they get to 13, 14, 15. So I think our approach of teaching a love for the game and just treating kids well, treating families well, communicating with them, offering all the different levels, I think we’ve attracted a large group of people.

How else did your playing career shape your club vision?

I was a midfielder/forward at Judson. Wherever they wanted me.

Wherever the coach wanted. We just wanted to step on the field, right?

Never complained. And that’s the thing, is the (humility) of being an athlete translates to what we’re doing in teaching kids, too. Just appreciating the gifts that we’re given, to do it as a living is a blessing. Even though sometimes I say it’s a blessing and it’s a cursing. Just because there were

so many things in life that I wanted to do, and it just seems I kept getting pushed back to soccer. We just love what we do. And the coaching staff that I have, they’re in the same boat.

They love soccer. They’ve played it professionally, every single guy that I have. Just the passion that they exert to the kids helps spark a love for the game for the kids, it motivates them.

We’re teaching the right things.

We don’t worry about winning, you know. I think that’s what differentiates us from a lot of others that are out there. But I don’t like to compare ourselves with others, but we just don’t focus on winning. We focus on player development. Individual player development, and then the team aspect falls into place. … Teaching these kids what it’s like to be a person off the field and being humble and showing them the world. We actually have a lady who does a lot of community work for me. We call them “acts of kindness,” so she puts together three to four events a year that the kids get involved with within the club. ... It’s funny, because in the area, the kids have everything here.

The kids have shoes, they have fields, they have everything at their fingertips. Just educating them on what’s happening around the world. Or not even that, just next door. Just by taking some of these kids to the food pantry and then seeing parents walk in to pick up cans. And they’re like, ‘Hey, he goes to my school.’ Some of these kids sit right next to each other at school, and they don’t even know it. So it’s just opening their eyes to the world and making them better people, not just soccer players.

That’s kind of the culture that we’ve instilled over here. We call it kind of a family, where we’re at. We get to know every family and every kid. It’s hard to do that sometimes when the business grows, but when we’re on the field every day with these kids, we try to teach to each kid and their developments, and not just the team needs of how are we going to win this game? It’s more of how are we going to get Lucy to dribble? How are we going to get her to use the proper

To be honest, in my opinion, when the World Cup came in ’94, I went to a few games. I was a 12-year-old boy, and I said, ‘Wow, my dream might come true of playing in a professional league,’ because the World Cup is going to bring a lot of excitement to the U.S. and it’s going to grow. Since then, to be honest, it’s been 20-plus years and my biggest thing with what has happened … what I’ve seen is we’re not creating players. The U.S. national team doesn’t have a Messi.

They don’t have a Ronaldo with the foot skills. The reason for that is because it all starts on the grassroots.

It all starts with what the coach is teaching the kids at a young age.

And not only that is, what is the goal when they step on the field? Is it to win the game, or is it to develop the players? I see it a lot where it’s about the winning. The winning is going to come. Don’t get me wrong, when the coaches step on the field with the kids, they’re going to try to go out there and compete. And I always remind the kids, I want you to compete.

Work hard and compete, and try to execute the things that we’ve learned in practice. But if we’re always thinking about winning and sacrificing kids in the field to win the game, day in and day out, what about the other kids on the field? They don’t develop from that if you’re focusing on two to three children to win the game. …

You need some experience coaches, some coaches who are doing it for the right reasons that don’t get caught up in winning and want to develop kids.

And they want to correct them. They want to correct them when they have a chance to and run proper practices.

And that’s when we’re going to get to the Argentinas and the Brazils of the world, is when we start focusing on doing the right thing in training and focusing on the right things with development, you know.

GENEVA – The Chicago Steel dug a hole Friday night against Cedar Rapids, and a frantic third period effort couldn’t pull the team out.

The Steel didn’t muster a goal past Cedar Rapids netminder Ben Blacker despite taking 31 shots and lost, 2-0, at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“I thought as the game went on, we got better,” Steel goaltender John Lethemon said. “We battled and did a better job of limiting their chances.”

The Rough Riders (30-12-2-1) got on the board first, as they relentlessly attacked the Steel (19-20-4-3) in the opening period.

Less than seven minutes into the game, John DeRoche flipped a saucer pass across both blue lines and hit center Ross Colton in stride to instigate a 2-on-1 rush. Colton took it himself, however, as he snapped a wrist shot past Lethemon to give Cedar Rapids the 1-0 lead.

The RoughRiders outshot the Steel, 9-2, in the first six minutes and 16-8 for the period.

“Obviously, it was a close game throughout, but I think John was a big part of that. I thought he came up with some huge saves, especially when we weren’t playing well in that first period,” Steel coach Dan Muse said. “We gave them too many chances early on.

We got caught out of position and we gave their top line a real good scoring

chance and they buried it.”

The RoughRiders added an insurance goal with 4:45 remaining in the third period as Will Garin flipped a wrist shot directly into Lethemon’s chest, but the goalie couldn’t squeeze it and the puck dribbled between his legs for a crucial goal. Lethemon made 34 saves on the night, but it’s the one that got away that sticks with the goaltender.

“I thought I had it, I thought I felt it next to me,” Lethemon said. “It kept rolling on a bad bounce. It’s one I should’ve had.”

Before the mishap in the third, however, Lethemon kept the Steel in the game with some highlight reel saves.

Colton was able to slip past the Steel defense once again in the second period and had a clear breakaway. With a chance to put Cedar Rapids up 2-0, Colton gave a deke in and out, but Lethemon wasn’t fooled and made a kick save.

The Steel’s penalty kill has been strong as of late, and that trend continued Friday. The Steel entered the contest having killed off 22 of 23 power plays, and 34 of 36 dating back to Jan. 17. On Friday, Chicago killed off both of its penalties, a pair of hooking infractions in the first period, to keep the game within striking distance.

The loss dropped the Steel back under .500 for the season, and Chicago hasn’t beat Cedar Rapids yet this season, after losing the teams’ first two meetings Dec. 11 and Jan. 16.

When we bought our house, I figured our dishwasher wasn’t long for this world. It was kind of beat up, so I assumed I’d get around to replacing it a few months later after we unpacked a few more boxes.

That was eight years ago.

It’s still going strong, much to the chagrin of my children. They’re not huge fans of the top rack, as it doesn’t slide out if it slips off the little thingy attached to the track. You know, the little thingy that’s so old, brittle and broken that it requires patience and gentleness in order to stay in place and support the rack. So not cool when you’re a teenager in a hurry.

And the cutlery baskets below, the gaps now so large that haphazardly placed items fall through and gum up the works? Yeah, good times.

Experience has taught me where to put everything in order to avoid that crazy “why-the-heck-won’t-the-dishwasher-door-close?” drama, but my kids

Not a fan of waste, I wince whenever I happen to catch one of those home improvement shows and spot perfectly functional kitchens being ripped out and discarded. I’ve been known to yell at the TV: “Wait! Easy on the crowbar! Give those cupboards to a shelter!”

I suppose I get some sort of perverse

pleasure out of seeing how long I can coax things along, though. I actually relish the challenge. More practical folks strive to dodge the inconvenience of an appliance’s untimely death, but I’m not above hand-washing for a few days.

And I’m not above take-out, either, like last year when my gas stove died.

You may recall that I actually raised it from the dead myself when I replaced the old igniter with the help of YouTube. That was so satisfying! And there was one less appliance in the landfill.

But my water heater, also predicted to kick the bucket fairly soon after our home purchase? It may be getting the old heave-ho sooner rather than later.

My teenagers’ long showers are making it weep, if you get my drift.

But here’s the thing: If I replace it, their showers are likely to become even longer. I’m basically playing chicken with it, at this point, occasionally whispering sweet nothings at it as I stroll past to do the laundry in our dingy

basement. So far, so good.

But if it goes? Cold showers for everyone for a day or two, in which case I’ll have to go to the gym. You know, for showers. That may be what it takes to get me back in there, which wouldn’t be a tragedy, after all, because good grief, several boxes of Girl Scout cookies (that I didn’t order) arrived a few days ago and WOW, how ‘bout that? The morning after, after I ate a few more thin mints for breakfast, I did what any self-respecting woman faced with such a crisis would do and tied a knot in that dang bag of Girl Scout cookies and flung them up on top of the aging refrigerator – yeah – to a spot I couldn’t reach without a ladder. You bet I did.

How to celebrate French cooking’s many joys “A Cuisine of the Sun” is an inspired cookbook by chef François de Mélogue, who grew up in Chicago and who attributes his passion for Provencal food to his French-born mother.

Mélogue’s book, subtitled “A ray of sunshine on your plate,” features more than 60 recipes culled from the southern coast of France. Note that for this recipe I used crab, cod and shrimp and kept the fish whole instead of running them through a food mill.

In an introductory chapter, Mélogue observes: “You can give two equal cooks the exact same bag of groceries and even the same recipe and you will end up with two different dishes. The person who cooks with passion and love always prepares the tastier, more soulful meal.”

Among other recipes to check out are Artichoke Tart Tatin, Crispy Duck Confit, Salted Caramel Apple Beignet and Vacherin of Strawberries. Mélogue’s book is available at the author’s blog (eattillyoubleed.com) and at Amazon. com as a hardcover volume or e-book.

MARSEILLE FISH SOUP

Soup base: • 2 Tbl. olive oil • 2 sweet onions, sliced • 1⁄2 bulb fennel, chopped • 6 cloves garlic, mashed

Crush the tomatoes and add, along regions of France because of the abunwith their juice, the pastis and fish dance of small rock fish to flavor the fillets. Add enough cold water to cover broth. Finishing the soup: Adjust the seasonings and serve in heated bowls. Pass around bowls of grated Gruyere, roasted croutons and rouille. The best way to enjoy is to put a dollop of rouille on a crouton and float it in the soup then sprinkle Gruyere.

ROUILLE

• 2 egg yolks • 2 tsp. sea salt • Large pinch saffron • 2 tsp. sweet paprika • 2 garlic cloves • 1 Tbl. Sriracha hot sauce • 2 tsp. red wine vinegar • 1⁄2 cup canola oil Put the egg yolks, sea salt, saffron, paprika, garlic cloves, Sriracha and vinegar into your food processor and pulse all smooth.

Slowly add oil till very thick. Adjust seasonings to your taste and chill overnight.

Yoga powerfully relieves stress Dear Dr. K: A friend is urging me to try yoga because I’m stressed out. I am suspicious of all these “touchy-feely” practices. Does yoga have scientifically proven benefits?

Dear Reader: Yes, many studies have found that yoga can improve strength, flexibility and balance. It also is effective in relieving stress and anxiety. It has minimal side effects, although there are a few precautions I should mention.

Like any form of regular exercise, it should be begun gradually in older people.

People with disease of the bones in their neck, and people with glaucoma, need to avoid certain yoga exercises. If you have those problems, talk to a yoga instructor before you begin.

Several years ago a reader asked me about yoga, and I mentioned my first experience with its stress reduction benefits. The story is worth retelling.

The first person I ever knew who regularly practiced yoga was an intense and ambitious young doctor. Any conversation with him was short and difficult; he completed your sentences for you and interrupted you at will.

He was very smart and had a lot of valuable things to say, but that didn’t mean you looked forward to talking with him.

Then something odd happened. I had a conversation with him in which he didn’t interrupt me. A few weeks later, I had another.

What was going on? I learned from his wife that she’d suggested, strongly, that he try yoga – and he loved it.

In addition to physical postures and exercises, traditional yoga incorporates breath control, deep relaxation, meditation, concentration and mindfulness. These mindbody practices counteract stress by evoking the relaxation response. The relaxation response can be practiced without doing yoga – although the physical benefits (strength, flexibility and balance) are not as great.

The relaxation response is essentially the opposite of the stress response. It lowers heart rate and blood pressure and decreases the production of stress hormones. Practicing yoga leads to changes in the mind and body that promote feelings of tranquility and well-being.

My friend Dr. Herbert Benson, a famous meditation researcher here at Harvard Medical School, described the following exercises to elicit the relaxation response. Give them a try to see if they help you to feel more relaxed: • Select a word, mantra, prayer or thought.

Focus your attention on it in a relaxed manner.

• When other, everyday thoughts intrude, let them go. Refocus your attention on step one in a relaxed and patient manner without frustration or judgment.

Start by doing this for five minutes. Gradually increase the amount of time you spend on the exercises.

I’d urge you to try yoga, rather than just the relaxation response, because of its greater physical benefits. In fact, I only went out on four dates when I was a senior in high school, but I had several good friends. I always felt left out and depressed because I wasn’t a member of the “in crowd.” I’m glad now that I did not allow myself to lower my standards just to find someone to ask me out.

So, Abby, hang in there and don’t ever give up your moral integrity. There are many wonderful guys in the world (like my husband), and they know the meaning of real love. They help their girlfriends to be the best they can be and will never require their standards to be lowered. I believe that the happiest and most enduring marriages are between two people of high moral standards. –

I’ve got a better answer. Simply encourage the young woman to mark “Refused” on the unopened letter and return it to the letter carrier. That way the guy will get the message that it will be a waste of time and money to write more letters to her.

I had a similar problem, and after two “refused” letters, his unwanted mail stopped coming. –

When you read a novel, or watch a movie, do you pick the character with whom you can most closely relate? If so, it probably helps you to get into the story.

At the bridge table, you will often need to have a way to get into one hand or the other. You must carefully watch your entries. In today’s deal, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest diamond, and East puts up the 10?

South’s two-no-trump rebid was game-invitational with something worthwhile in diamonds, the unbid suit. North’s raise was borderline, but he hoped partner could make use of the club suit.

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, three diamonds (given trick one) and one club. His best chance for three more winners lies with the hearts, but declarer will presumably have to lose the lead twice.

So he will need hand entries.

If South starts with a low heart and the defender with the ace takes the trick, there will be no problems.

But if the queen wins the trick, declarer will be one hand entry short.

Instead, he should start with the heart king and swallow dummy’s queen. Suppose West takes the trick and shifts to the club 10 (best defense). South should take the second club, play a diamond to his hand, and continue hearts. Here, the deal has a happy ending.
