I had a bird’s-eye view last Friday for the IHSA state gymnastics preliminaries at Palatine High School. For the most part, state tournaments, such as this can be zoos. People everywhere, nowhere to put my coat and someone usually standing

right where I need to be.

For gymnastics, the IHSA allows photographers to photograph only from the balcony. I’ll admit, I was a little surprised by this at first, but once I found my spot, I realized that I had plenty of room to work, and I could see

Two charged with aggravated robbery in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Batavia man and a Roselle woman have been charged with aggravated robbery in an incident that took place Tuesday at the Shell gas station on Randall Road in Batavia.

Jason A.J. Devincent, 29, of the 500 block of Stewart Street, Batavia, and Amanda A. Hicks, 28, of the 100 block of Brendon Court, Roselle, are charged with one count each of aggravated robbery, a felony.

in the Batavia robbery, which occurred sometime before 1:26 a.m. at the Shell station at 164 S. Randall Road.

According to police, Devincent displayed a black handgun and demanded money from the register.

Devincent and Hicks told investigators the weapon used

in the incident was a pellet gun.

They also have been charged with an armed robbery at 10:03 a.m. Monday at the Mobil gas station at 28W050 Warrenville Road, Warrenville.

Devincent and Hicks got away with more than $130 in cash and three cartons of cigarettes, Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said.

“He told investigators that he had a drug problem, and he had to get money,” Bretz said. “When you have a drug problem, you are going to get desperate.”

“After the Bell” will highlight Batavia schools’ organizations, clubs and sports in a talk show format, providing a closer, more personal look for the community at what local students are accomplishing in and out of the classroom, according to a news release from BATV. Unlike previously school concerts and sporting events that were broadcast, “After the Bell” will offer a behindthe-scene look and student insights into what clubs and teams are doing beyond public events, the release stated. “ ‘After the Bell’ is unique because it doesn’t only focus on athletics,” BATV Director of Programming Jen Brens said in the release. “This is more of a talk show than a news program or a short seg-

several months since he lived there. It is not known whether Devincent and Hicks were involved in any other armed robberies in the area, Bretz said.

“We sent information out to all the departments in the area,” he said. “I’m sure these departments will check their reports or unsolved robberies they’ve had. The Warrenville Police Department was very instrumental in the investigation.”

Devincent and Hicks were located in an Elk Grove motel

at about 2 p.m. Tuesday by Elk Grove police, according to police. They were taken into custody without incident.

They were being held in the DuPage County Jail as of Thursday afternoon on charges stemming from the Warrenville robbery, according to online jail records.

Devincent and Hicks will be served arrest warrants from the Batavia incident, police said. Bond for each of them was set at $100,000 on the Batavia charges.

CH objector vows to file new complaint against write-in slate

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A judge ruled Thursday that a Campton Hills resident cannot intervene in an election lawsuit that is now a closed case.

However, he ruled another case could be filed separately.

James Newman, an attorney who lives in Campton Hills, had sought to intervene in a case that Kane County Judge David Akemann decided last month, regarding a challenge to nominating petitions for village offices.

Newman said he would file a new case.

“I’m entitled to my day in court. That’s all I’m asking,” Newman said.

In denying Newman’s request to intervene, Akemann said he was doing so without comment about the case’s merits.

Newman’s complaint was directed at the April 7 consolidated election write-in slate of incumbent Patsy Smith for village president, as well as trustee candidates Michael Turgeon and Donald Sheluga; and clerk candidate Stephany Impson.

Newman asserted that, because they had not filed their declarations of intent to be

write-in candidates with Village Clerk John Strauss at Village Hall, the candidates should not be allowed to receive any write-in votes.

Newman also objected to the write-in candidacy of Steven Galloway. But after Galloway won enough votes in Tuesday’s primary to be on the April 7 ballot, Newman said he was dropping Galloway from his objection.

Ken Shepro, representing Galloway, and Campton Hills attorney Mark Schuster also argued against allowing Newman to intervene in a closed case.

“It’s a judicial proceeding,

not a chain letter,” Shepro said.

“A new suit should be filed,” Schuster said.

Shepro said nothing about how the write-ins would affect the April 7 ballots because, as write-in candidates, their names are not printed on the ballots. Shepro said later state statute does not support Newman’s claim that the write-in candidates had to file their declarations of intent with the village clerk. Shepro said the write-in slate candidates also all filed their intentions with Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s office.

State statute requires the filing to be made to the election authority – which is Cunningham – not the election official, which is the village clerk, Shepro said.

As of Thursday, King’s jury trial still was slated to begin Monday.

Sams said in court Thursday the state would rest its case against King by the Monday or Tuesday of the trial’s second week.

Childress said if prosecu-

tors were done by March 10, the defense would be able to wrap up by the end of that week.

Sams and Childress gave their estimates at the request of Hallock, who wanted to give those in the jury pool a realistic timetable for the trial.

He was a printer for 25 years, worked for the State of Illinois at the St. Charles Boys School, and retired from the Kane County Judicial Center after 24 years. Donald was a member of the V.F.W. Post # 4079, the L.O.O.M. #400, the Knights of Columbus #736, the Catholic War Veterans and was a 60 year member of Holy Angels Church. He enjoyed fishing, swimming and gardening.

Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Marguerite (Thompson) Murphy; his son, Donald P. (Nancy) Murphy; his daughter, Patricia A. Edna R. “Rose” Wallace, age 63, of Geneva, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva surrounded by her family.

She was born October 21, 1951 in Forest, Mississippi, the daughter of

Edward and Pauline (Charles) Bond.

Rose worked as a preschool teacher’s assistant. She had a pleasant disposition and was always happy when good things happened to other people, she rejoiced at their blessings. In her spare time Rose enjoyed reading, going to garage sales, and relaxing at the beach. She will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her loving husband, David, who she married on December 22, 1974 in Meridian, Mississippi; daughter, Amanda of Geneva; siblings, Rachel Lyles of Mississippi, Davis (Mary Ann) Bond of Mississippi, Miriam Bond of Mississippi, Sidney (Jan) Bond of Indiana, and Liz (Oscar) Bond Lopez of Texas; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents.

State legislators eye school funding reform

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, said she doesn’t believe the newly introduced School Funding Reform Act of 2015 is a way to solve school funding inequity across the state.

“The funding formula is so convoluted that nobody knows what it means to their school district,” McConnaughay said Thursday during a meeting with Kane County Chronicle editorial staff. “It also still continues to maintain Chicago block grants and does nothing about unfunded mandates.”

State Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, earlier this month introduced the School Funding Reform Act of 2015 as an amendment to Senate Bill 1. It is a new version of Senate Bill 16, which made it out of the Senate last year but died in the House.

State Sen. Pamela Althoff, R-McHenry, who also met with Kane County Chronicle editorial staff members, stressed the importance of the discussion.

“It’s an issue that really needs to be addressed so that every child in the state of Illinois gets the quality education they deserve,” she said.

McConnaughay was one of the legislators who had opposed Senate Bill 16. At the time, she said the bill generally would favor Chicago and downstate communities and would reduce state distributions to many suburban school districts.

McConnaughay said the Illinois Vision 20/20 initiative to improve public education does a better job of addressing the school funding problem.

The proposal would tie school funding to educational outcomes and district costs.

The plan was developed by the Illinois Association of School Administrators in partnership with the Illinois Principals Association, the Illinois Association of School Business Officials, the Illinois Association of School Boards,

the Superintendents’ Commission for the Study of Demographics and Diversity and the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools.

Technology in classrooms still evolving

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com At quick glance, Amy Geyer’s first-grade classroom doesn’t look much different than classrooms from decades past.

But reminders of what’s changed surface as the Norton Creek Elementary School teacher demonstrates the Ladibug document camera that has replaced the overhead projector; shows how YouTube videos can be projected from her laptop to the dry-erase board; and explains that previous generations of students likely sat in rows rather than in clusters, as her students do.

Geyer, who has spent 43 years at St. Charles School District 303 – as a student and as a teacher – said she likes the changes in technology.

“You have to keep up with it,” she said. “Education is constantly changing, and you just have to keep up with all of those changes.”

Education’s evolving nature – coupled with rapid changes in technology – makes it difficult to encompass just how school has changed since the parents of today’s students were in school.

“Even in eight years, we’ve seen huge change,” Steve Kohlhagen, a fifth-grade teacher at Heartland Elementary School in Geneva, said about educational technology and its impact on student learning.

Seventeen years later, in 1983, the addition of a computer lab with 21 Apple II computers warranted a mention in the St. Charles High School yearbook. The computers were used for typing, introduction to business and introduction to computer programming.

“All freshmen math classes spent 10 days gaining awareness of how the computers operate,” the yearbook states.

“The board of education set several goals which they hoped to be achieved in the lab: computer awareness for freshmen; the teaching of data processing skills; the teaching of executive secretarial skills; and the expansion of students’ programming skills.”

In Batavia, computers were introduced to the high school library – now known as the learning resource center – in 1995, LRC Director Daniel Russo said.

“It is amazing that in my time I’ve gone from actually bringing the first computer

Russo, who previously taught English, recalled how difficult it would be for former students to find resources for their American literature research papers.

“It was truly a struggle

because you were limited to what was in the four walls of the library,” he said.

With subscriptions to numerous databases, the school library is no longer just a physical space, Russo said. Students can access the databases wherever and whenever they have access to a computer.

A big part of his job has become teaching students how to use the databases, which recorded 27,487 log-ins and 75,166 searches in the first semester this year, Russo said.

“You can find information on anything, but the problem is – or the challenge is – how do you deal with so much information?” Russo said.

Collaborative learning While tangible items have been phased in and out of schools, District 303 Area Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education Becky McCabe noted an intangible quality classrooms generally lack today: quietness.

In recent decades, she and others said, educators have embraced the concept of cooperative learning. Students now tend to sit in clusters rather than rows and are encouraged to collaborate with each other, educators said.

Such a setup is a departure from what Geyer experienced as a student, she said, explaining there was an expectation to not talk or look at one’s neighbor.

As a teacher, she recognizes the value of kids working together.

“I may not be able to explain things to them like they can to each other,” Geyer said.

Batavia High School is launching a business incubator class for the 2015-16 school year designed around collabo-

ration. Based on a Barrington High School program, the entrepreneurship course will have students work in teams to create and develop a product or service, Chief Academic Officer Brad Newkirk said.

Noting that business is a popular field of study at the post-secondary level, Newkirk said the course came about because Batavia School District 101 was looking for ways to “really teach” the concepts of business.

“It’s putting the theory into action,” he said.

Advanced learners Although Geyer has taught only first grade, the specifics of what she teaches have changed.

When she began teaching in the 1980s, she said a big part of her job was teaching the students how to read. Now, she said her focus is on reading comprehension.

The students’ writing also is more advanced than what it was 31 years ago, Geyer said.

Noticing a globe in one of his coworker’s classrooms, Kohlhagen said he can’t think of the last time he used such a tool.

But ask him and the other Heartland fifth-grade teachers how often their students use their individual, school-provided computer, and they’ll say whenever the kids feel they need it.

The fifth-graders use the devices to take notes, listen to stories, make presentations, update their blogs – which their classmates can read – and connect with other students across the country and the world, teachers said.

“We don’t even go to the [computer] lab anymore,” teacher Laura Ross said.

Principal Adam Law wrote in an email that the fifth-graders have been working with one-to-one portable devices for two years. With the technology, he wrote, students are more connected beyond the school, and they are assuming greater ownership of their own learning and are thus more engaged.

“The teachers are not teaching the technology,” Law wrote. “Rather, they are teaching the curriculum using the technology as a tool.”

Now, Geyer said, as she recently pointed to a student’s opinion writing assignment, her class uses a writing organizer and talks about elements, such as an opening, supporting details and a closing.

“Is there a cost in that?”

Geyer asked about younger students becoming more advanced academically. “I don’t know that answer.”

Geyer said students have lost other, non-academic skills.

For example, she said, she has less time to include arts and crafts projects in her lessons, and many kids have difficulty holding scissors and cutting.

“There isn’t nearly as much creativity as there used to be,” Geyer said. “There’s so little time for that.”

When students do have the opportunity to draw pictures, they will sometimes want to print clip art so they can trace around it, said Kristen McAvoy, a fifth-grade teacher at Heartland Elementary School.

But there are students who appreciate the technology that they have had access during their K-12 career.

Eileen Ruppel, a 2014 Kaneland High School graduate who attends Augustana College in Rock Island, specifically mentioned her keyboarding classes, noting her parents don’t know how to type.

“It’s hopeless,” she said.

Caitrin Mills, an 18-yearold Kaneland senior, said she is glad to have instantaneous research tools rather than relying on outdated books.

“A lot of the modern technology has changed education a lot,” Mills said.

When researching, students need to know their purpose, Russo said. Are their teachers expecting them to use authoritative sources selected by an academic journal, he asked, or are their teachers looking for popular culture sources?

‘How many of you have seen your mother in a fistfight?’

In the film “Finding Forrester,” the famous white author, mentoring a talented black teenage writer, tries to explain where the boy’s high school teacher’s racism originates. The conversation goes something like this: “Do you know what people are most afraid of?”

“What?”

“What they don’t understand.”

“When we don’t understand, we turn to our assumptions.”

That’s a pretty good definition of prejudice.

In a recent column, I questioned statements made in two Kane County Chronicle letters to the editor. The writers seemed to ignore or deny the myriad of daily advantages enjoyed by whites, while simultaneously oblivious or insensitive to

the difficulties faced by kids growing up impoverished or non-white.

After reading the column, a mutual friend put me in touch with Toriano Griggs, today the assistant principal of Lyons Township High School.

He talked to me about his life, hoping his story might help those of us born into relatively privileged families and safe neighborhoods better understand what life is like for those who aren’t.

“I have an overarching feeling of sadness for people who are struggling,” Griggs began, “and for those who don’t try to understand. Some people are so ignorant, they just want to judge and be hateful. It’s too bad they don’t stop to think about the situation some people get born into.”

Griggs’s father was “ghetto black. My mother came from

Our black ghetto never accepted her. I’ve seen racism from both whites and blacks.”

However, Griggs added, “being surrounded by anger and frustration doesn’t give people an excuse to break the law. But when you’re coming from slaves, those feelings of inferiority skew things in different ways.”

He noted how he has close relatives who were involved in crime and criminal behavior.

“Maybe I just had a better sense of myself,” he said.

“Were you a reader?”

“Always. I read books about people who made it out, like ‘Soul on Ice.’ Frederick Douglass’ autobiography made the biggest impact.”

When teaching “My Bondage and My Freedom,” I emphasize Douglass’ contention that bigotry is not a natural response, but learned. As a young slave, Douglass plays with white boyhood friends who, before becoming “educated” about slavery, believed he had as good a right to be free as they had.

Then Griggs shared his experience at a minority student achievement committee meeting. “I asked a room full of African-American students, ‘How many of you have seen your mother in a fistfight?’

Half the room raised their hands.

“I saw my own mother fight,” he continued. “Rumor

has it she fought a lot when I was really young. What kids see and learn at home affects them.”

I was reminded of the advice Nick Carraway’s father offers in “The Great Gatsby” – “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. But Griggs has.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

In any other year, the mayoral election in America’s third-largest city wouldn’t matter much to anyone beyond driving distance to Wrigley Field.

This year’s race for Chicago’s mayor, however, both reflects and could shape the direction of the Democratic Party – not to mention the future of American cities.

Incumbent Rahm Emanuel failed to win outright on Tuesday, finishing with 45 percent of the vote (less than the required 50 percent plus one vote) to challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s 34 percent. Both candidates are Democrats, but beyond that, they have little in common.

Consider the two men’s approaches to education.

Emanuel adopted teacher evaluations linked to student performance, flexible hiring and firing rules, and a longer

school day (Chicago’s had been the shortest in the nation). He also increased the number of charter schools and made the politically difficult decision to close dozens of underperforming or underused schools.

Garcia, who promised to end mayoral control of the schools if elected, enjoys the strong backing of the city’s teachers union, which called a seven-day strike to protest Emanuel’s policies.

Schools are the archetypal local issue, of course. But the state of the nation’s education system – especially in its cities – has a profound effect on U.S. economic growth and competitiveness, and there is disagreement in the Democratic Party over how to improve it. These differences are neatly reflected in Emanuel and Garcia.

But perhaps the biggest difference between the two candidates – and the

greatest current divide in the Democratic Party – is on economic matters. Emanuel has focused on bread-andbutter issues familiar to any successful mayor: cutting red tape and costs for small businesses, promoting tourism, attracting wellpaying jobs. Garcia has cast his campaign in populist terms. His supporters call Emanuel, who used to work in investment banking, “Mayor 1 percent” and have embarked on a nationwide effort to defeat him.

During the next six weeks, Chicago’s voters can show the nation – and the national party – that fiscally responsible government remains a priority for Democrats.

That’s why this mayoral campaign has consequences not just for Chicago, but for the presidential race and debate over the next year and a half.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

“I was kind of thinking and preparing myself for a close game. One, two points,” Vikings senior forward Janie McCloughan said. “But I think that as a team, we came out much mentally stronger, as well. As much as it hurt last time to lose against East,

The Crusaders pounced on her short-lived absence, immediately forcing a turnover and then doubling up the Royals at 20-10 on a 3-pointer from sophomore Kailyn Strawbridge.

Strawbridge took over the game at both ends of the floor as the second half wore on, scoring all 15 of her points after the intermission.

“She’s obviously a great player,” Kellett said. “It was tough having her man-mark

me basically the whole game.

Not a very fun thing to do, but the other girls stepped up. But she’s an amazing player. Her drives to the basket were unreal.”

Rosary mustered one last push, drawing to within 30-25 on a pull-up jumper by Kellett with 3:35 to play in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders closed strong to advance to Monday’s Lewis University Supersectional against Morton.

Rockford Lutheran coach Joni Carlson said her team’s early offensive struggles were a mixture of Rosary’s dogged defense and some missed opportunities, especially in the opening minutes.

“I thought they had a good defensive scheme tonight,” Carlson said of the Royals.

“They sagged in on us and they knew we have some slashers and good drivers to the basket.

But again, I think our first five shots were right under the basket, wide open, and we chose not to put the ball in the basket. But I thought defensively [Rosary] worked their tails off

tonight.”

Nobody scored more than seven points for Rosary, with Kellett and Megan Conlin each hitting that mark.

Lauren Smith and Jenna Hernandez sparked the Royals’ sluggish offense off the bench, with Smith scoring six points and Hernandez adding five, including a banked-in 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to keep the Royals in the hunt.

Smith was glad to give her team a jolt, especially against an imposing Crusaders squad.

“I was afraid I was going to get blocked or something,” Smith said. “But I just went up and tried my hardest, and it worked out in the end.”

Terrell has high hopes for the underclassman.

“Lauren from Christmas on has really, really blossomed into a nice player,” Terrell said. “She’s one of the ones I look to step up both on the defensive end and the offensive end for us in the future. She’s only a sophomore, so that’s a bright future for her.”

So when we were playing in the arc, everything was a little more condensed and more congested, so it made it a lot harder to just beat us straight to the basket.”

East shot 25 percent in the first half and 37 percent for the game. At one point, the Vikings sprinted to a 21-2 run spanning the first and second quarters.

“Defensively, they clogged it up a lot. They took away our ability to penetrate,” Saints coach Lori Drumtra said.

“But usually we have the ability to hit the outside shot. We just weren’t hitting anything in that first half, and I think the more we missed, the tighter we got.”

Geneva’s postseason-tested frontcourt paced it in the scoring column, but the Vikings enjoyed plenty of contributions other than those from McCloughan (18 points, nine rebounds) and sophomore post Grace Loberg (16 points, 13 rebounds).

Freshmen guards Margaret Whitley and Hart sparked a fast start by combining for seven points in the first quarter.

Long past the “SHE’S A FRESHMAN!” chants, the duo has relied on the unselfish, turnover-forcing style of basketball they witnessed from the stands growing up.

“Playing as a team and playing our game, and not playing down to our competition and trying to play to the best of our ability,” Whitley said.

In the second quarter, senior reserve guard Courtney Reynolds provided the big shots that helped swell the lead, hitting two 3s as Geneva worked the ball around when East switched to a 2-3 zone.

“We all had so much energy, things didn’t really bother us,” Reynolds said.

“We just kept playing.”

Geneva advanced to face New Trier, a 41-39 winner against Evanston in Thursday’s Glenbrook South Sectional final, at 7 p.m. Monday.

Wading through the rush of players and well-wishers after the game, Meadows at one point asked about the location of the game.

The answer? Conant.

HAMPSHIRE – Quincy Kellett thinks she broke a finger early in Thursday’s IHSA Class 3A Hamsphire Sectional championship game, during which she also was poked in the eye, knocking out a contact lens.

It doesn’t sound like the most delightful of nights, but Kellett’s smile hardly faded after the Royals fell, 41-29, to Rockford Lutheran.

“Never in a million years would I have thought I’d be standing here talking to you guys at a sectional final game,” Kellett told a group of reporters after the game. “Especially midway through the season when we were so down.

It’s awesome to be here.”

Rosary’s surprising postseason push couldn’t withstand a frigid shooting night, not against a high-caliber opponent like the Crusaders (275).

But the night was largely about the experience for Rosary (13-18), making its first ap-

pearance in a sectional final in program history. And the Royals soaked it in from the time they arrived to the standing ovation they received after the final buzzer.

“We were almost like too loose before the game,” Rosary coach Jessie Terrell said. “I was like ‘You know, we are about to play a sectional final.’

I was very happy with how we started, especially the first three quarters.

The first half saw both teams mired in offensive frustration, and it took a miniflurry from Rockford Lutheran late in the second quarter for the Crusaders to take a modest, 12-9 lead at halftime.

Royals bounced in sectional final

Mascot prospects strut their stuff QUICK READ Kevin Druley Five weeks and six days before the start of their 25th season, the Kane County Cougars still seek a face of the franchise.

With apologies to long-tenured former right-hander Scott Deal in the club’s Oakland A’s days, that distinction always will fall to a mascot when minor league baseball is concerned.

On Saturday, the Cougars held open auditions for the next person to fill the shoes (and suit) of the venerable Ozzie T. Cougar. Candidates toured Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva, got a taste of the gameday routine and performed a choreographed song and dance number on demand. In costume, of course.

They also did something that’s otherwise forbidden for mascots – talked, extensively, in an interview setting with Cougars officials.

“It’s a unique role. It’s certainly not for everyone,” Cougars director of public relations Shawn Touney said. “It’s a specialized skill.

We’ve got high expectations, obviously. We want to find the right person to fill that role.”

Touney said the defending Midwest League champion Cougars are “at the homestretch” of an open search process, having auditioned several candidates Saturday and a few more during the week.

Touney said that peppy fan squad is “typically college age,” but the Cougars are not limiting themselves to that demographic.

B-Towner Sager back in fold: Craig Sager, an NBA sideline reporter for TNT, high-fived several staff members Wednesday at Atlanta’s Northside Hospital.

The Batavia native wasn’t on camera or clad in one of his trademark, offbeat suits.

Sager simply reacted colorfully to the news he officially was cleared to work again after his April 2014 diagnosis with acute leukemia.

“He’s always been that guy who, if you give him an assignment, his brain just switches right like that,” Sager’s son, Craig Sager Jr., said Thursday. “It was tough to see him have to just sit there and wait.”

The elder Sager, 63, had pneumonia for almost 16 weeks after a bone marrow transplant. Sager Jr. tweeted Wednesday his dad will

return to the airwaves for the Bulls’ March 5 home game against Oklahoma City. He also will again be part of the Turner networks’ coverage of the NCAA tournament later next month.

Sager rooted for the Bulls,

who came into existence when he attended Batavia High in the late 1960s, a passion that extended to his son. Growing up in Atlanta, where the family has made its home since the 1980s, Sager Jr., 26, recalls naming several pet tree frogs

after such former Bulls as Michael Jordan, Luc Longley, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman.

Sager Jr., managing editor for Georgia preps-centric Score Atlanta, never has been to Batavia, but hopes to visit soon. He knows it’s still a big part of his dad’s life.

“Every time I ever said anything about my dad or gave an update, I’d always see people from Batavia writing back,” Sager Jr. said. “I know he’s excited every time he goes back and stays in touch.”

Cadets grapple hype: Speaking about the Illinois Matmen wrestling rankings earlier this month, Kaneland coach Joe Orosco said, “You’ve got to have some type of measuring tool, but be careful to not put too much credence in it.”

Marmion might be wise to heed that outlook.

A number of websites and publications, Illinois Matmen included, regard Oak Park-River Forest as one of the top programs nationwide, let alone in the IHSA.

“They wrestle the matches for a reason,” Marmion co-coach Donny Reynolds said. “Hopefully, we can pull a couple we’re not supposed to win and hopefully good things can happen for us.”

OP-RF, the defending Class 3A dual state champion, shared at least one thing in common with Marmion during Tuesday’s sectional round.

The Huskies adjusted their lineup considerably and thumped Evanston, 5713, behind only five wrestlers who competed during individual regionals Feb. 7.

Marmion did some substituting of its own while edging Lyons, 38-36, although much of it was necessitated by late-season injuries. The team also has competed without a 106-pounder throughout the season.

Recently minted 3A individual state champs Riley DeMoss and Nathan Traxler both moved up a weight class, to 182 and 195 pounds, respectively, to earn key falls for the Cadets.

“It’s really impressive and it just goes to show about the

mindset and the character of those boys,” Reynolds said.

“They knew that they had to come back and make weight.

They didn’t know necessarily they’d be moving up a weight class, but the matches turned out better that way. We went with it. So it’s nice to know we have those guys we can rely on.”

Reynolds doesn’t deny “our lineup’s kind of getting a little thinner right now,” which triggered a late scratch for the final bout of sectionals at 160 pounds.

When Matt Ferraro’s pin at 152 sealed the outcome, the Cadets forfeited freshman Nate Jimenez’s bout at 160 to keep him out of harm’s way.

OP-RF handled host Marmion, 49-14, in an early January dual, but the Cadets’ lineup was even more topsy-turvy then.

Marmion, a dual team state tournament entry for the third straight year, will take its chances against the Huskies knowing it has done its share of jelling in the past few weeks.

“Oak Park, they’re definitely a tough out,” Reynolds said.

“They’re ranked No. 1 in the country right now, so we can’t toss [in] the towel, we’ve got to go battle.”

Briggs needs to prove he’s healthy

With free agency set to open March 10, we’ll shine the spotlight on several Bears free agents and examine each player’s likelihood to return to Chicago. We begin with Lance Briggs.

LANCE BRIGGS Position: Linebacker Age (As of Sept. 1, 2015): 34 NFL seasons logged (with Bears): 12 (12) 2014 stats: Played in and started eight games, making 34 tackles, three passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble and two tackles for loss. Missed time midseason with a ribs injury and then was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.

No one will question Briggs’ instincts, and he should be able to fit as an inside linebacker in Fangio’s defense, while continuing to help in the development of Jon Bostic and Christian Jones.

The Bears are young at linebacker, so having a veteran in the room could only help, but

should Briggs be that veteran?

More on that below.

Financials: Briggs just finished a three-year contract worth $17.5 million, and he had a base salary in 2014 of $4.75 million. That’s likely Briggs’ final lucrative deal, and he may be in position to get a one-year contract considering his age and recent injury history.

If Briggs can prove to teams he is healthy, in shape and ready to contribute right away at a high level, he could get more than the veteran minimum, maybe an incentive-laden deal such as D.J. Williams got last year with the Bears (one year, $1.5 million). Larry Foote had to sign a one-year, $955,000 with the Cardinals last year.

Other veteran linebackers have gotten bigger deals, such as Karlos Dansby (four years, $24 million) in Cleveland, but Dansby had gone three consecutive seasons starting all 16 games. Briggs, who had an iron-man-like run, missing only four games from 2003 to ’12, has played in 17

games combined the past two seasons.

Best guess: The Bears will be in the market for veteran linebackers for sure, looking at those who can play inside or outside. There are a lot of options, including Briggs, but in addition to the fact that it’d be a new scheme for Briggs, does this brand-new regime want to keep a player of the old guard?

If Briggs was playing at a high level with durability during the past two seasons, that’s one thing. We saw flashes from Briggs last year in the wins over the 49ers and Buccaneers, but remember – this organization just underwent sweeping change.

Re-signing Briggs – unless Pace and Fangio think he can be a starter – doesn’t align with that philosophy.

Keep an eye on Briggs’ former coaches, like Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay, Ron Rivera in Carolina, Bob Babich in Jacksonville and Rod Marinelli in Dallas.

Rose’s ‘soft’ rep his own doing

A scope here, a snip there, and then lo and behold there’s Adidas rolling in with cameras ablazing for a new “The Return III: This Time He Really, Really Means It’’ commercial.

Rose’s reputation?

Even the surgically gifted hands of team physician Dr. Brian Cole would have trouble with this repair job, and Rose has no one else to blame for that but himself.

It’s time to start being honest about the Rose legacy. The days of humble hometown kid from Englewood are long gone. A narrative that actually started losing its traction in the 2012-13 season, in which Rose opted to stay sidelined with the surgically repaired left ACL, despite the fact doctors had cleared him

to play.

Fine. It was an easier hall pass to sign off on when Rose was disguising his decision with tough talk like “a championship is the only thing I’m caring about now.”

Then lightning hit twice.

Well, at least the same tree, different branch, as Rose had to have the meniscus in the right knee repaired after just 10 games last season, costing him the year.

Again, tough talk that we could all wrap our arms around.

“You can be a fool if you want to,” Rose would say in a news conference in December, when asked whether the Bulls should start thinking about moving on without him. “I could tear it or hurt myself 10 more times, I’m never going to stop. Never.”

Rose wasn’t exactly lying, because he’s hasn’t stopped.

But what he has done instead is exited the vehicle and started walking in a direction that has left all of us scratching our heads.

It really started in the summer, when Rose seemed moved by how LeBron James was taking control of his brand, becoming the one and only voice of his legacy. Rose insisted in a July article that was the model he would now follow, taking an active role in recruiting Pau Gasol, as well as looking to end the tensions between his camp and the Bulls’ front office.

Finally, he was getting it.

Finally, he would be his own man.

That lasted a day.

If that’s the case, Rose had better do whatever it takes to answer that bell.

Even feel-good, hometown kid stories have an expiration date, and Rose’s is on the verge of spoiling.

Now and then Reliving the past in the pages of a yearbook Sooner or later it all connects.

This particular tale of connection began with a telephone call from a school buddy, Jan Rasmussen Ellis.

A copy of the 1923 St. Charles High School yearbook, named “Pottawatomie,” had surfaced from among her mother’s things, and she brought it to the latest convening of the monthly rolling reunion of the Class of 1956.

Evidently, the gang urged her to put it into my hands as column-worthy.

My instinct was to compare the 1923 version with our 1956 Saints’ “Halo.”

Unfortunately, my copy had vanished a few years ago when I took it to a sock hop event at church. I was particularly attached to those 142 pages. (As editor, it was my first publication, along with a full staff of dedicated participants.)

True story: Enter Mariellen Anderson, widow of our much-loved Keith Anderson and Richmond School kindergarten teacher for both our daughter, Tina, and granddaughter, Madison. Mariellen arrived at the restaurant in Geneva, Chianti’s – where Tina works – and put a copy of the 1956 “Halo” into her hands. Turns out Keith had two.

What stands out at first glance of “Pottawatomie” is that all of the senior girls had practically the same hair style. Google reports that the ’20s style was called a “curly bob” and described it as a medium short haircut, using curlers, a clip for waves, a stiff brush for the comb-out and a rat-tailed comb for the finished touch.

The black-and-white photographs displayed no visible blondes or redheads.

“Halo” girls photographed as having short, dark hair – even as we can still certify red-heads Joanie Murray and Carol Vilien and blondes Caryl Tonn Van Overmieren and Sonja Alexander Van Nortwick. Oh my gosh, there is May Jordan as the librarian on both faculty pages.

The surnames in both editions are familiar to the community. Lots of Andersons, Johnsons, Belgian and Lithuanian names and ’56ers

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry who are offspring of the ’20s era. Harold Arteberry appears in the following year supplement (the yearbook published every two years). He often spoke about the Wheaton football game and their local hero – Red Grange.

The patrons (donors) of the early version included an ad proclaiming “over 40 years in business.” The ’56 version of the Colson store donation did not highlight their longevity. McCornack Oil, Gartner’s Bakery, Essig Hardware and Bagge Drugs were repeated, too.

A feature in the 1923 book was a series of reports about recent alumni. Some were in college, some on their farms, various law and order occupations, the watch factory, phone company and as employees of various stores and offices. Looks like married women who stayed at home had no standing?

Hang on to your yearbooks, my friends.

Future generations will be looking!

You’ve already made some healthy changes to your diet.

Evidence continues to mount that a plant-based diet – rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy plant oils – may help reduce the risk of many health concerns, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.

Adding fresh fruits and vegetables, as you’ve done, is a great first step. The next step is to incorporate more nuts, seeds and legumes into your meals and snacks.

These days, all sorts of nuts, from almonds and hazelnuts to walnuts and pistachios, are readily available. You can also find seeds, including pumpkin, sunflower, flax and chia seeds, in most grocery stores.

Legumes include the spectrum of beans: black, soybean, navy, lima, chickpea (garbanzo), red, great northern, pinto, fava and kidney. Peas and lentils are legumes, as are peanuts.

Nuts and seeds provide healthy mono- and polyunsaturated plant oils as well as protein.

These foods are chock-full of nutrients: “good” fats and carbs, protein, vitamins and antioxidants. Still, all food contains calories, even healthy food. So portion control is key. For example, nuts and seeds are rich in vegetable oils, which pack nine calories per gram. Just a handful of nuts contains 160 to 190 calories and 3 to 7 grams of protein.

Legumes generally contain more carbohydrates than nuts and seeds, but a roughly similar amount of protein per serving. A half-cup serving of cooked beans contains 115 to 125 calories and 7 to 9 grams of protein.

Try not to obsess over exact portions. A loose handful of nuts can be a healthy “dose” on your morning cereal, yogurt or oatmeal. So can a heaping tablespoon of sunflower or chia seeds.

A handful of cooked beans on a salad is also a healthy meal-enhancer. That’s my lunch, nearly

every day.

Add nuts, seeds and legumes to your diet gradually. Start by incorporating them into foods you already enjoy.

To get the full benefit of a plant-based diet, substitute plantbased proteins for some of your usual intake of red and processed meat. For example, substitute kidney beans for half the meat next time you make tacos. Sprinkle pumpkin seeds on your salad in place of shredded cheese. Or eat an almond butter sandwich for lunch instead of the usual ham and Swiss.

Why is a plant-based diet so healthy? Because that’s been the main diet of human beings throughout our existence. Our bodies evolved to expect such a diet. Meat meals were not common fare. And foods with refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats (like trans fats) were virtually non-existent. The diets we’ve developed in the past two centuries, in developed nations, are not what we were built to eat – and are not good for our health.

Dear Reader: I have received many letters from food servers who were upset when I wrote that a tip is not a handout, but rather a reward for excellent service, and that superior servers make better tips – and that’s the way it should be.

Many servers felt they should be amply tipped regardless of the quality of service because often serving foul-ups are not their fault. For instance, a server will wind up unfairly taking the blame when the food is poor because the cook is bad. Some said that, thanks to a cheap restaurant owner, they had too many tables to work, causing patrons to be upset with slow service. Others were distressed because they had the senior-citizen shift (2 to 6 p.m.) and seniors are poor tippers.

Food servers may, indeed, be overworked and underpaid. I would never suggest they don’t deserve a good salary. But I still believe that when people go to a restaurant, they deserve the best possible service. When this happens, the server will be amply tipped.

Excellent servers will take home the most money because a tip is not a handout. It must be earned.

This week, we have been looking at some deals that might at first glance appear to involve a finesse, but have in fact required leading twice toward the hand with the two honors. Is this another example?

South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade queen. How should South plan the play? Faites vos jeux (place your bets).

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs. Obviously, he will have to take three diamond tricks to reach nine.

And, it must be admitted, on many deals, starting the suit by leading a sneaky jack from hand will not hurt. First, the suit might split 3-2. Second, that play might gain, when West starts with king-doubleton and fails to cover an honor with an honor. But assuming there is no misdefense, it cannot gain to lead the jack first, and it might cost. Imagine West or East has a singleton king. Or look at today’s layout.

This is another case of leading twice toward the hand with the two honors. After taking the first trick, declarer should lead a diamond to dummy’s ace and return a diamond toward his hand. Here, East will probably play low. South wins with his queen, notes West’s discard, returns to dummy with a heart, and leads another diamond through East to get home.
