Harter PE teachers urging Kaneland board to avoid cuts

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Two middle school physical education and health teachers told the Kaneland School District 302 Board on Monday that cutting a teacher from their department would be a bad idea.

Kaneland Harter Middle School teachers Tom Leneau and Todd Weimer spoke in a public comment portion of the meeting.

Board members, mapping out plans for the 2014-15 school year, heard plans that could include the elimination of a full-time employee or the equivalent of “0.6 FTE.” With six full-time PE/ health employees, class sizes at Harter are at 27 to 37 students. Eliminating 0.6 of an employee would result in sizes of 31 to 39 students.

Eliminating a full employee would result in class sizes of 29 to 42 students.

would “become overly large for classroom instruction.”

Leneau told board members that physical education classes are not about “just throwing out the ball.” He said “we’re engaging in the lives of these kids.”

“We spend a lot of time planning and meeting the needs of these wonderful children,” Leneau said.

Weimer said health instruction includes valuable lessons that people can use for the rest of their lives, adding that “you’ve got to take care of your body. It’s really important.”

Most board members did not favor eliminating any middle school PE or health positions.

to five positions, saying there are “hard choices that need to be made.”

Board President Cheryl Krauspe said she could consider a reduction to 5.4 fulltime positions.

Other board members said they would keep staffing where it is.

“I don’t see enough to be gained,” board member Peter Lopatin said.

Among other discussions are whether to have middle-school class sizes at 26 or below, 28 or below or 30 or below. Six additional teachers would be needed to get class sizes to 26 or below. Four would be needed for class sizes at 28 or below. One additional teacher would be needed for class sizes of 30 or below.

Valente said he has not seen any evidence that there would be a major difference between class sizes of 30 and below and 26 and below.

“I don’t know that it’s important to do that,” he said of adding additional teachers to reach class sizes of 26 or 28 or below.

Commission recommends extending virtual charter school moratorium

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The Illinois Charter School Commission has recommended extending a moratorium on virtual charter schools until 2016 or until new laws and policies are put in place.

“Virtual schools are significantly different, and laws should reflect those differences,” Commission Chair Greg Richmond said Wednesday.

Virtual Learning Solutions withdrew its proposal to start a virtual charter school in the area after Gov. Pat Quinn in May 2013 signed legislation that puts a moratorium on the creation of virtual charter schools outside of Chicago. The moratorium expires April 1.

Eighteen school districts – including Kaneland School District 302, St. Charles School District 303, Geneva School District 304 and Batavia School District 101 – rejected Virtual Learning Solutions’ proposals to start an online school.

Among other things, the commission has recommended that laws and administrative rules be modified to hold schools accountable based on both state tests and other measures appropriate for virtual schools and require schools to demonstrate the capacity to deliver services to special needs students and English language learners.

In addition, the commission has recommended that local school districts should not

be required to consider unsolicited applications for virtual schools.

The commission has recommended the state legislature pass new legislation that incorporates the commission’s recommendations and extends the moratorium. The commission has recommended the moratorium expire no later than Dec. 31, 2016, but that it could expire earlier if statutory changes are made before that time.

Richmond said he didn’t think it was critical for new legislation to be passed before the current moratorium expires.

“I am not aware of any proposal waiting in the wings,” he said.

KinderZone Program registration open GENEVA – The Geneva Park District will begin taking KinderZone Program registration for the 2014-15 school year Tuesday. The KinderZone program is a recreational-based program designed for the kindergarten-age child and is held at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, at 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

This program focuses on a variety of enrichment and recreational activities including athletics, martial arts, environmental education, arts and crafts, gym activities, fitness, nutrition and more.

Busing from the Geneva School District 304 schools to the program will be provided by the Geneva Park District.

‘A tough act to follow’ Clauters helped create an authentic experience at Pioneer Sholes

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After more than 30 years, Art and Hazel Clauter finally ended their one-room schoolhouse days.

The Clauters, who are from Geneva, have retired from their role as docents at the Pioneer Sholes School, located in the Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles. The 96-year-olds were honored Jan. 21 by the Pioneer Sholes School Society for their contribution to the school.

“They have just gone above and beyond the call of duty,” said Deanna Banner, the school’s executive director. “I don’t know if we could ever replace them, they just had an undying amount of dedication ... they’re a tough act to follow.”

The Clauters have driven by the school a few times since they stopped volunteering in October 2013, and they said seeing the school makes them content.

“That schoolhouse has been pleasant,” Hazel Clauter said. “We’ve had a lot of happy experiences toward the people and school.”

As docents, the Clauters greeted visitors, provided information and answered students’ questions.

Hazel Clauter would sometimes lead as the teacher if the visiting instructor needed her to play that role.

The Clauters always dressed up to match the era of the school, which opened in 1872.

Art wore black overalls and a red bandanna around his neck to portray a farmer. Hazel wore a long dress with an apron, bonnet and shawl.

The Clauters played a major role in gathering donations and keeping up the maintenance of the school, Banner said.

The couple’s relationship with Pioneer Sholes began back in 1979 when Hazel was a third-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in St. Charles.

She happened to be at Leroy Oakes the day a truck pulled up with the schoolhouse, which was being moved from David Sholes Farm in Burlington Township, Banner said.

When the school was restored and opened for classes by 1981, Hazel Clauter became a frequent visitor there on class trips with her students.

She became a docent full time after she retired from teaching in 1982.

after he retired from being vice president of sales at the Wrigley Corporation.

The Clauters’ mature age was a factor in their decision to retire. They both turned 96 at the beginning of the year, and Hazel Clauter began to use a walker this year.

“We’re getting a little old to be bouncing around the school,” Art Clauter said with a smile.

After retirement, the Clauters still remain largely independent and will keep

busy around their Geneva home.

Hazel enjoys taking care of plants and gardening, and she and her husband are avid readers. They still have relatives that live in Illinois, and their two sons and daughter do visit on occasion.

The Clauters said they will miss all the students who came to the school the most.

“I always enjoyed the young kids; they really woke you up,” Art Clauter said.

Commitee backs funding for shooting range Total construction costs are estimated at about $1.9M

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board members continued Wednesday to support a sheriff’s project that will cost more than $800,000 more than initially expected.

The Finance/Budget Committee OK’d the budget adjustment needed to build the shooting range. Total construction costs are estimated at nearly $1.9 million. Sheriff Pat Perez has said the unforeseen costs can be paid for by the surplus generated by the housing of U.S. Marshall inmates.

The new range is planned for a location near the county jail. The existing range on

Fabyan Parkway is no longer usable.

Some board members expressed concerns that the project is being considered individually and not as part of a larger discussion about the county’s capital needs and priorities.

Member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said including the shooting range in such a discussion could delay the project even more.

“It would take us months and months,” he said.

Member Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, said he would have liked updates on the project sooner but ultimately sup-

ported it. He viewed it as the county replacing an existing facility rather than “skipping ahead” of other departments.

Frasz said depending on other agencies’ ranges is impractical for 300 employees who need regular training.

Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, agreed and noted the ongoing overtime costs the county could accrue without having its own 24-hour range.

“It makes more sense to build the facility,” she said.

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, Perez said, the range would let his officers go “over and above” in training. He said of-

ficers could train for various situations, such as low-light environments.

“This range is going to open up doors to do specialized training,” Lt. Ronald Grommes said in the Administration Committee meeting last week. “This is training we’ve never had. This is training we need.”

GENEVA – The 5 percent raises proposed for several Kane County directors have cleared another hurdle toward final approval.

In a 5-1 vote Wednesday, the Finance/Budget Committee approved salary bumps for the public health director, emergency management director, supervisor of assessments, human resource management director and finance director.

The raises range from $3,246 to $6,076, according to agenda documents.

Each of the raises – except for that for the finance director – received initial approval last week by other committees.

Finance Director Joe Onzick’s proposed raise was not brought forward for consideration before Wednesday.

The raises are part of a larger effort by Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen to make director salaries more comparable to those offered by other counties in the region.

Onzick, for example, earns $115,000 – an amount about

$16,700 below his lowest paid counterpart and nearly $44,000 below the average salary paid to his counterparts, according to agenda documents.

The philosophy is to protect talent and reward achievement, Lauzen has said.

As different committees considered different raises last week, board members said they looked forward to seeing how each proposed raise fit into the bigger picture. That discussion, however, was closed to the public Wednesday, as the committee voted to conduct the hourlong conversation in executive session.

After the meeting, Lauzen said he “very much appreciates” the board members’ support of the raises.

The issue will come before the Executive Committee next week, at which time Lauzen said he will present seven things people need to know about the proposed raises.

Lauzen said he has received a couple of calls from constituents about the proposed raises and invited others to contact him at 630-232-5931.

“They’re important calls because they help me focus my thinking,” he said.

Fermilab finds way to create top quark

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Scientists at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory are excited about the fact that they have found the final predicted way of creating a top quark.

“It is the heaviest elementary particle that we know,” said Gregorio Bernardi, co-spokesperson for the DZero experiment at Fermilab.

“The particle was discovered 20 years ago at the Tevatron at Fermilab, and now we are completing the loop.”

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle observed in nature.

Quarks are one of the fundamental building blocks of matter in the universe.

In 1995, physicists at Fermilab announced the discovery of the top quark. The discovery was made through Fermilab’s Tevatron accelerator, which shut down in 2011.

Scientists on the CDF and DZero experiments at Fermilab announced recently that they had observed one of the rarest methods of producing the elementary particle – creating a single top quark through the weak nuclear

force, in what is called the “s-channel.” For this analysis, scientists from the CDF and DZero collaborations sifted through data from more than 500 trillion proton-antiproton collisions produced by the Tevatron from 2001 to 2011.

They identified about 40 particle collisions in which the weak nuclear force produced single top quarks in conjunction with single bottom quarks. Only two machines have ever produced quarks, Fermilab’s Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland.

Scientists from 27 countries collaborated on the Tevatron CDF and DZero experiments and continue to study the reams of data produced during the collider’s run, using even more sophisticated techniques and computing methods.

“I’m pleased that the CDF and DZero collaborations have brought their study of the top quark full circle,” Fermilab Director Nigel Lockyer said in a news release. “The legacy of the Tevatron is indelible, and this discovery only makes the breadth of that research even more remarkable.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Stander had raised $860 of his $2,500 goal, according to his page on www.FirstGiving.com.

This is the fourth year Stander will participate in the Polar Plunge, which is set for 11 a.m. to noon at Sunset Beach, 355 W. Washington Ave., Lake Bluff.

His career as an electrical engineer spanned employment at Western Electric, AT&T and Lucent Technologies until his retirement in 2001.

He was the founding president of the Batavia Lions Club and club secretary for more than 20 years.

He was deeply dedicated to the organization and was recognized by his peers with several honors which include Lion of the Year, Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services through Lions Club International and the George Lazansky Distinguished Service Award. The Lions’ motto is “We Serve” and he took this to heart.

He had a passion for trains. He loved to study their history, engage in tours of train yards and even experienced the exhilaration of

riding with an engineer last fall in Colorado. Since his retirement, he spent many days working with the Kane County Model Railroad Club and Fox Valley “O” Scalers.

Marshall was a faithful member of the Congregational Church of Batavia serving the church for many years through committees, teams and various activities. He was most proud of serving on mission projects with the church in our community as well as in North Dakota, Florida and New Orleans.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol of Batavia; his children, Jeffrey (Irene) Crane of North Aurora, Deborah (Bret) Patnode of Oak Park and Julie (Rob) Knanishu of Batavia; and his grandchildren, Kyle, Riley, Shane, Joey, Dylan and Hallie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, at Congregational Church of Batavia, 21 S. Batavia Ave., in Batavia. The visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will be private.

Ninth electric substation on EXPERIENCE the difference track in Geneva

First in the nation to receive Planetree designation for excellence in resident centered care

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As Geneva bets on the economy continuing to recover, it is poised to invest $3 million to $5 million on a new electric substation to supply power to 200 vacant acres east of Kirk Road and south of Route 38.

Aldermen at a recent special Committee of the Whole meeting agreed by consensus on a proposal from Public Works Director Dan Dinges to get started.

The city, which owns its electric utility, has eight substations, according to its 201213 annual report.

Dinges said it takes a year to build an electric transformer, so getting started now would reduce the lead time once developers are interested.

With a 20 percent deposit of $260,000 to get the transformers built, the city can be closer to project ready once developers show interest in annexing and developing the vacant farmland into a light industrial park.

Officials said they did not want to miss a development opportunity for lack of transformers being ready, as the design and construction phases already would take at least a year.

“Geneva has a long history of preparing for opportunities,” Mayor Kevin Burns said in a text response to a question. “Investing for the long term via necessary electrical upgrades is consistent with our practices.”

Burns already had predict-

ed interest in that area for this year.

The corridor is included in the Southeast Master Plan for redevelopment, which was a 2012 amendment to Geneva’s 2003 Comprehensive Plan.

The various costs for a new substation are $1.3 million for two transformers; $60,000 for ComEd engineering to hook up to it; $100,000 for substation design.

The other costs are based on construction, location and contingencies, putting the estimate at $3 million to $5 million, city spokesman Kevin Stahr said.

The first expenditure of the 20 percent transformer deposit would be made in the second or third quarter of the 2014-15 fiscal year which begins May 1, Stahr said.

Expenses for the project would be spent over a threeyear budget period, taking funds from the capital account in the city’s electric division, Stahr said.

“Our capital account is used for planned infrastructure upgrades to enhance our system,” Stahr said.

If developers step forward, the plan is to have the substation built and ready to go by the end of the third fiscal year, he said.

“We’re trying to get our pieces in place at this point,” Stahr said.

If no developers step forward, Stahr said the city can use them to replace existing transformers.

Officials said they could try to recapture the substation costs through annexation agreements.

GENEVA – Brides are expected to converge on Geneva on Sunday for the sixth annual Geneva Bride Wedding Walk.

Participating brides will gather for a reception, featuring 16 vendors, as well as tour 14 boutique wedding businesses in downtown Geneva, spokeswoman Laura Gaskill said.

So far, 56 brides have signed up, but they usually have 100 brides at the event, and each brings at least one other person – the fiancé, their mother, sister or friend, she said.

“Geneva is a wedding center; it’s a destination for anyone planning a wedding,” Gaskill said. “These vendors provide a boutique feel, personal service and attention.

You also get big-city attention and capabilities. Any of these shops can handle your wedding, from a small group of guests to hundreds of guests.

Geneva is the place for you.”

Admission is $25 in advance for a bride and two guests. The cost is $30 for the day of the event. Register online at www.genevabride. com.

The walk starts at 11 a.m. at the Herrington Inn and Spa, 15 S. River St., Geneva.

Admission includes a pashmina, tote bag and favors from vendors.

Brides can win a five-night, all-inclusive honeymoon to Dreams Villamagna resort in Mexico.

Geneva Bride is a merchant association founded in 2007 by local wedding-affiliated businesses working together to make wedding planning more efficient. 50th Representative District: Wheeler Oswego businessman Keith Wheeler has emerged as a community leader. He is the chairman of the Kendall County Food Pantry. He chaired the Kendall County Republican Central Committee in 2008. And he serves on the Bristol Township Board of Trustees.

Wheeler, 46, stands out as the best of a strong list of candidates vying to replace Kay Hatcher as the state representative in Illinois’ 50th District. The district covers much of southwest Kane County, as well as northern Kendall County.

Wheeler understands the concerns that owners of small businesses have, and he would represent them well. He identifies job creation as a top priority, creating a plan called Illinois

Jobs for Illinois Families.

Among his opponents, Oswego resident Julie Cosimo works as an administrator at Benedictine University. Improving education is among her missions, as well as creating jobs, reducing spending and holding down taxes.

Aurora resident Beth Goncher has served for 12 years as a legislative aide to state Rep. Tim Schmitz, who is retiring. She knows the job. She would seek to reduce government spending and would aim to help create jobs in Illinois.

Sugar Grove resident Bill Keck, a former Kane County auditor, is the fourth candidate.

Wheeler is a proven leader with a strong business background. He is endorsed.

65th Representative District: Ugaste Let’s wear pants with pockets

In the GOP primary race for the 65th Representative District, three candidates are vying for votes. Attorneys Daniel Ugaste and Steven Andersson are on the ballot, along with business owner Debbie Miller. The 65th District covers areas of Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, South Elgin, Pingree Grove, Hampshire and Huntley.

If elected, Ugaste said his top priorities would include balancing Illinois’ checkbook so bills could be paid on time, reducing state debt and lowering debt service payments. He also would strive to reform workers’ compensation laws in the state to make them fair for both business owners and workers.

A member of the Geneva Public Library District Board, Andersson would place an em-

phasis on balancing the budget, if elected, and he would push to implement term limits for elected officials at all levels of state government.

Miller said that if she were elected, her goals would include instituting policies to make sure Illinois supports businesses, which could lead to more jobs, and she would want to make sure Illinois has the best schools, community colleges, universities and trade and technical schools.

Andersson and Ugaste both are strong candidates, but we believe Ugaste has the edge in this race.

He describes himself as having “a very conservative view of government, both fiscally and socially, which reflect the views of the majority of the people in this state representative district.”

To my fellow teenage girls: Here’s a little reminder, between us friends – we seem to have forgotten that leggings are not really pants. A piece of clothing that was once designated for working out and lounging around has now become a part of our everyday wardrobe. And yes, I really mean every day.

There are girls my age who I have honestly never seen in jeans. These ladies can make leggings very versatile. I’ve seen them paired with blouses, sweatshirts, dresses and – my personal favorite – Uggs.

Of course, during finals and AP exams, all bets are

off. Everyone is too stressed out to judge too harshly.

So, let’s all make an effort to keep it classy. I long for the days when we would compete to see who is wearing the latest pair of American Eagle jeans.

The Kane County Bar Association’s judicial evaluation committee gave Kostelny a highly recommended rating and Tegeler received a recommended rating.

Tegeler notes that the state’s poll only received about 110 responses after distributing 1,200 ballots. He said he puts more stock on the Kane County Bar’s evaluation.

Tegeler thinks he could serve the public well as a judge with his experience owning a law firm and time serving as a Blackberry Township precinct committeeman.

He also has been an attorney in more than 200 jury trials.

“I have a reputation for knowing the newest case law and statutes,” Tegeler said.

“It’s that work ethic along with everything else I’ve done over the past 25 years that sets me apart.”

The winner of the election will fill the vacancy left by Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6.

A repeat candidate is up against a current associate judge in the Republican primary for a Kane County Circuit Court judge seat.

Geneva attorney D.J. Tegeler is once again running for judge after a 2010 attempt, joined by Associate Kane County Judge Marmarie J. Kostelny of Elgin.

Both Tegeler, 50, and Kostelny, 53, said their individual court experience and work histories make them the ideal candidate for the seat.

Kostelny, who currently pre- D.J. sides over the Tegeler Kane County Drug Rehabilitation Court, was appointed an associate judge in 2006.

Before that, s h e o w n e d a Marmarie J. small law firm Kostelny and worked as an attorney in Elgin for 20 years.

“I’ve done the civil side, the criminal side. ... I think I’ve been tested and proved as a judge over the past seven years,” Kostelny said.

Kostelny also pointed to strong referrals from the Illinois State and Kane County bar associations.

The two-time James Beard Award-winning author received a Distinguished Alumni Award on Feb. 22 during a ceremony at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles. Her books include bestsellers such as “The Flavor Bible,” “Culinary Artistry,” “Becoming A Chef” and “What To Drink With What You Eat.” Page lives in New York City with her husband, former professional chef Andrew Dornenburg, and the couple have collaborated together on several books.

the St. Charles School District’s Distinguished Alumni Award. What does it mean to you to receive the award?

Karen Page: It means I’m getting older! When I think about it quickly, high school seems like it was maybe 20 years ago – certainly not the 35 I discover when I run the actual numbers. How did those years fly by so quickly? I’m reminded that it means I need to take the time to appreciate each and every day.

I was thrilled to have an opportunity to meet with some of St. Charles High School’s current student newspaper staff on Friday, as I have so many fond memories from my own days on the staff and as its co-editor-in-chief in 1979.

ES: I understand that former St. Charles High School journalism instructor Candace Perkins Bowen, along with staff member Esther Kaplan, inspired you when were attending high school.

How did they inspire you? What did the experience of being the co-editor of your school newspaper teach you?

KP: The year I served as co-editor-in-

chief, our St. Charles High School school newspaper, the X-Ray, won All-American (the highest) status in a competition of high school newspapers. I think that says everything about what an extraordinary staff we had during the 1978-79 school year, including the first semester editor-in-chief, Barb Linder (now Millard, of Batavia), who was a dear friend of mine and someone with whom I’ve been happy to keep in touch all these years.

She’s run a transcription company that does excellent work and which I’ve used to transcribe countless taped interviews I’ve conducted for a number of my books, so Barb and her team had confidential access to some fascinating conversations about food and wine that made it into several award-winning books.

And I think that says everything about what an extraordinary newspaper adviser we had in Candy Perkins, who raised the bar for us and taught us to always aim for excellence. She also helped to instill a level of impeccability to do

whatever it takes to make deadlines.

When the weight of the snow on the roof of St. Charles High School caused the official closing of school, she supported us in unofficially coming in to school on our own time to get the paper out.

Esther Kaplan worked in the guidance office, and the fact that she took the time to line-edit some of my stories after they’d already appeared in the paper (at my request) also exemplifies the level of excellence I found at the high school.

I learned – and am still learning – to be more concise.

ES: What words of inspiration do you have for high school students who might not yet know what they would like to do with their lives?

KP: I believe Joseph Campbell had it right when he said, “Follow your bliss.” Go down the avenues that interest you most, and keep learning more. And John Irving had it right

when he advised, “get obsessed and stay obsessed.”

Get to know yourself, get to know others and get to know the world. Be passionately curious about all three.

I used to spend a lot of time in magazine stores skimming for articles that captured my attention. Today, the Internet is such a gift – all you have to do is surf the Web to see where your interests take you.

Keep an eye out for problems that need to be solved and solve them. Every one of the books we’ve written is the solution to a problem, and I’d venture to guess our most successful books have been effective solutions to pressing problems.

ES: The books that you and your husband have written have been described as “the best place to experience the cult of the New American chef.” What would you like your books to do?

KP: I write the books I want to read that don’t exist yet – so my aim is always twofold: To learn something about a particular subject, and to share what I learn in a way that is useful to others.

I am so touched when we visit restaurants and the chef apologizes for asking us to sign a well-worn, dog-eared copy of one of our books that has sauce stains on its pages. There could be no higher compliment to an author that her book is actually being read and used. We have literally signed curved inscriptions around those sauce stains, which we believe to be badges of honor, and seeing duct tape holding the spine of an obviously much-loved book together always melts my heart.

Jambalaya serves tasty N’awlins fare

ST. CHARLES – Located at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, the restaurant Jambalaya bills itself as offering the tastes and nightlife of New Orleans. Though I’ve never been to “The Big Easy,” I’m familiar with the famed food from the area, and I was eager to sample some of the flavor.

Jambalaya offered affordable fare, with menu selections that certainly delivered on the promised experience, at least the best it could on a chilly February day. And I knew I would have to go for some signature dishes – a small bowl of gumbo, and an Atlantic Whitefish Po’ Boy” Both are listed among the house specialties.

Both dishes were big on taste, with portion sizes that left me full and satisfied.

I chose the small bowl of gumbo, which included shrimp, crawfish, andouille sausage and steamed rice.

The rice poked out above the bowl, and the first taste was warm and dominated by the rice. The next few bites were filled with seafood, and each spoonful provided a slightly different take. I’m a big fan of shrimp, so I knew that would be my favorite feature, but the sausage had the expected spice and the crawfish was tasty, too. It had a good kick to it, which is especially welcome as we navigate through so many below-freezing days. Unless you’re really hungry, stick with the small bowl, as it was more than enough. And I still had the main course to come.

The Atlantic Whitefish Po’ Boy featured three thick fish pieces sitting atop a bed of what was called creole slaw, along with tomatoes.

The pieces were surrounded by grilled French bread and accompanied by a just-enough smattering of curly fries.

here than there was with the gumbo. The fish had been cooked just right, and there was more than enough of it. It held together nicely, and even with three separate pieces

of fish, the sandwich didn’t break. There were other choices on the po’ boy menu as well, including pulled pork, crab cake and crispy spicy chicken.

I didn’t opt for the signature jambalaya, though that promised to be a meal itself, with a lunchtime price of $16.50, which would have been less than the combined price of the gumbo and the po’ boy. Most po’ boys had a lunch price of $11, with the crab cake option at $12.50.

I dined with a friend, who chose the VooDoo Burger, part of a colorfully named burger menu, which included the Mardi Gras Burger (pulled pork, smoked gouda and onion strings) and the Fatty Patty’s Burger (double patty, with bacon, avocado, grilled onions

and mushrooms on a pretzel roll). Most burgers were $11, but the Fatty Patty’s was $15.

The service was solid, even though we arrived only minutes before the end of the lunch service time – which is 2 p.m. The place wasn’t full, but it was active even at that time, and it’s likely the place comes to life at certain hours, depending on what is going on at Pheasant Run. Jambalaya has New Orleans-themed decor, and it had big, comfy-looking booths, with tables set up in between. There was plenty of space. The bar area includes a few small TVs, which were showing news and sports programming.

A visit to Pheasant Run’s website shows that Jambalaya also offers live entertainment,

with bands on some Saturday nights and a DJ, dance party and karaoke on Friday nights.

Also, the trip to Jambalaya takes you through a bit of the entertainment side of Pheasant Run, past Zanies Comedy Club.

If you’re headed to Pheasant Run for a show, and you’re in the mood for a little gumbo, you’ll find it at Jambalaya.

SOUTH ELGIN – The popular musical “Oklahoma” will be staged by South Elgin High School students in March.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, and Friday, March 7; and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 8.

“It’s a fun musical with underlying serious tones,” said Joseph Beaty, who plays the male lead of Curly, in a news release. “There are controversial themes of sex and violence that people didn’t really talk about back in the time when it was set or when it was written.”

Some of the controversy centers around the violence of Jud Fry. “They incorporated Jud as a contrast to Curly,” said Jim Chrouser, who plays Jud, in the release.

“Curly is lighthearted, easy-

go-lucky and popular, and Jud is serious and unattached and doesn’t know how to function in society.”

But at the heart of the musical is the romance between Curly and Laurey.

Maddie Hayes, who – as the female lead – plays the more proper Laurey, said in the release that she thinks her character has her own unconventional qualities.

“Laurey’s really strong,” she said. “She doesn’t want to conform and be with this guy [Curly]. She plays hard to get.”

ST. CHARLES – Continuing its season of “Musical Travels,” The Orion Ensemble will showcase “Sounds of Russia,” featuring works by Igor Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff and welcoming three special guests, including a quintet from Geneva High School.

Orion’s debut performance will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles.

“Sounds of Russia” will include “Suite from L’Histoire du Soldat for Clarinet, Violin and Piano” by Stravinsky, considered by many to be among the most influential composers of the 20th century.

The music is part of a larger work for improvised theater created by Stravinsky and his author/friend Ramuz in 1918.

The tale is an adaptation of the Faust story, about a soldier who trades his violin for great wealth, only to realize the folly of his decision later.

Joining Orion for guest performances are two seniors from the Chicago High School for the Arts; pianist, composer and Columbia College Chicago director of keyboard studies Sebastian Huydts; and violinist and violist Stephen Boe, a chamber musician who has performed with the Chicago Ensemble and is on faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago.

The mission of the Geneva Film Festival is to celebrate the art of filmmaking by setting the stage for independent filmmakers to showcase their talent to the world, according to a news release.

The festival will take place from Thursday, March 6, through Saturday, March 8, at Dodson Place, located at the corner of Second and Fulton streets in Geneva.

Attendees can enjoy a variety of films from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Brazil, India and more.

“Every year we try and raise the bar in the quality of films we select for our festival, and this year was no different,” Geneva Film Festival Executive Director Scott Rolf said in a news release. “With more than 100 films submitted, it was easy to elevate the cut-off point and select only the very top-rated films for each category.

With such a diverse offering of genres and subject matter, there is definitely something for everyone at the 2014 Geneva Film Festival.”

Patrons also will have opportunities to meet with the producers and directors of selected films.

And festival-goers can help choose the winning films in various categories.

‘60 Men Who Cook’ competition looking for contestants

teel Beam Theatre in St. Charles has a hit on its hands with the premiere of “The Bay of Portugal,” a lively romantic comedy by New York-based actor and soap opera writer-turned-playwright Richard Culliton.

Culliton, who has written scripts for “Days of Our Lives,” “As the World Turns” and “General Hospital,” also starred last season in Steel Beam’s production of “The Seafarer” and, earlier, in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “Later Life” and “Love Letters.”

The playwright’s Steel Beam ties are linked to its founder, Donna Steele, who also appears in “The Bay of Portugal.” Both Culliton and Steele were theater students at Northwestern University.

The new play, directed by Terry Domschke, is set in the Chicago area where two estranged parents are brought together for an engagement party of their daughter. But Gwen (Donna Steele), who still harbors a fair share of acrimony, is put off that her former mate, Jack (Pat Able), would even put in an appearance at the party.

Years ago before their divorce, the couple were both actors in a Shakespearean touring company; she played Rosiland to his Orlando in “As You Like It.” On the surface, Gwen now has it all – a husband who provides a comfortable lifestyle and social status that comes with privilege.

Things are far different from the past when life was a struggle and Gwen and Jack were living hand to mouth.

However, as the play unfolds, cracks in the veneer reveal a different picture.

Gwen’s marriage to Norm (Bill Sherry) isn’t on solid ground, and her relationship with daughter Maggie (Valerie Zawada) is at times testy at best.

Cameron, who works unhappily in the finance department at a Subaru dealership, one of the businesses owned

by Maggie’s stepfather, is the first to admit that he never surprises anyone.

Traces of Culliton’s soap opera background manifest themselves in Act II of the comedy.

Characters admit to having underestimated one another; there’s a brief episode involving fisticuffs; and a big financial secret is revealed.

But as with all good comedies, a happy ending prevails.

Steele puts a lot of heart into her role as the interfering Gwen; Able smoothly delivers some of the play’s sharpest punch lines; and Sherry’s character, Norm, fits the description that’s given to him by Jack: “Norm’s like North Korea – just because he’s ridiculous doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous.”

And, as it turns out, Compton and Zawada, playing the engaged twosome, are full of surprises in this engaging comedy.

‘A lot faster than last season’ East’s Shanel eyes breakthrough in final state meet

ill Shanel emerged with a Norris Center pool record in the 200-yard individual medley at Saturday’s St. Charles East Sectional boys swimming meet.

While his personal best in the 500 freestyle wasn’t quite as heralded, it nonetheless fueled the East senior’s frenzy.

“Both of those races just kind of made me realize, ‘Wow, I’m a lot faster than last season,’ ” Shanel said. “I’m ready to shave down, suit up and go for what I can pull off this weekend.”

Shanel enters his final IHSA state meet with big-picture goals, and would just as soon leave Evanston with more than a few medals in his custody. He’s talking legacy, both within an East program coming off its first sectional title since 2002 and his own home.

swimming 4:37.45. Although encouraging, that’s still more than six seconds shy of his father, Mark, who went 4:31.13 as a Saints standout in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

“If I have a great taper, I’m definitely feeling that I can be there,” Shanel said. “That would be cool. I definitely want to have bragging rights in that one.”

The Shanels have produced their share of swimmers, with Will’s parents both collegians at Indiana. His older sister, Ashley, is a sophomore at NCAA Division II Truman State in Kirksville, Mo., where Will Shanel committed earlier this school year.

Close friend and fellow senior Nick Wellman, a Wisconsin-Whitewater recruit, has noticed added urgency in Shanel’s approach. One of three East seniors on the sectional team – Tyler Van Gyseghem is the other – Shanel was the lone Saint to taper for the state meet. All others tapered for sectionals.

Batavia girls basketball players have absorbed their share of program history this season, most recently when they earned the school’s first regional title since 1990 last week.

The Bulldogs figured to skip over any entries on 2008 in cramming for tonight’s IHSA Class 4A Addison Trail Sectional final against Geneva. Avoiding a repeat of that anguish definitely is advised.

Batavia swept Geneva during the regular season, winning, 59-51 and 75-68 in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play. Six seasons ago, the Bulldogs boasted three victories against the Vikings in as many tries before a regional semifinal loss.

“Quite frankly, we look at it and go, ‘If we’re going to go to another level, why not have it be against Geneva?’ ” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said.

Loberg, just a few games into her midseason call-up during the second meeting, is fully acclimated to the plays and lineup.

Loberg has averaged 16 points in two postseason games. She missed Geneva’s Wheaton North Regional semifinal against Glenbard West with an ankle injury suffered during club volleyball play.

Also a top outside hitter, Loberg helped the Geneva volleyball team to a 4A regional title at Addison Trail in the fall en route to the program’s first sectional crown.

“I’ve known her since I was, like, four years old,” said McCloughan, who is classmates with Loberg’s older brother, Matt. “And she’s just such a great player that it’s really cool to share this with her.”

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com SOMONAUK – On a team with three starters 6-foot-7 or taller, 5-8 point guard Freddy Okito seems an unlikely bet to pull down double-digit rebounds.

Yet the Mooseheart sophomore found his spots to pounce with regularity during Wednesday’s 81-41 Mooseheart thrashing of Serena in an IHSA Class 1A Somonauk Regional semifinal.

Okito’s 12 rebounds were just one of several head-shaking realities for an overwhelmed Serena squad as the Ramblers advanced to Friday’s regional final against Newark.

“Just because I’m the shortest one out there … I’m a very quick one also,” said Okito, who was born in Rwanda but grew up on the north side of Chicago. “So I’ll be quick to go to the boards, and I try to get my hops up there a little bit, because when I’m on the court, I feel really energetic.”

Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said Okito flirting with or exceeding double-digit rebounds has happened several times this season, despite the presence of 7-foot-1 center Akim Nyang, 6-10 forward Makur Puou and 6-7 wing Mangisto Deng. “[Okito] has to go down and cover the bottom cutter so he’s basically a lot of times the offside rebounder, and he’s done a fantastic job all year,” Ahrens said.

Okito’s knack for gobbling rebounds was impressive but didn’t have the Somonauk gymnasium buzzing quite like the Ramblers’ six dunks or 10 blocked shots against a Serena team with no players taller than 6-3.

Two of the dunks were monster jams by Puou after teammates tossed feeds off the backboard, showtime style, with Deng and Hameed Odunewu notching those assists.

“We don’t practice those,” Ahrens said. “They probably

Deng scored a game-high 25 points and went 4 for 7 from the 3-point arc. More often, the Ramblers feasted in transition on a glut of turnovers by Serena, which coughed it up 20 times in the first half. The Ramblers led at halftime, 51-19.

Puou scored 20 points to go with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. The ball-hawking Odunewu scored 14 points despite missing all six of his free throws, while Okito scored nine points and Nyang grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots.

The regional’s top seed, Mooseheart has lost three times with its regular starters this season but Ahrens grudgingly indicated the IHSA considers his team 23-5 based on a pair of conference tournament games in which the Ramblers’ junior varsity players competed because of a scheduling conflict.

The Ramblers busted out new warmup shirts with the slogan “Play Angry” written on them.

Ahrens was somewhat coy in saying there could be multiple motivations to adopt that slogan, but said the saying is a nod to college powerhouse Wichita State, which made the saying famous during its Final Four run last season. The Shockers have evaluated Mooseheart’s top players on the recruiting trail.

WHEATON – Already owners of the Suburban Christian Conference Blue title, the Wheaton Academy boys basketball team added a bragging rights sweep to its résuméWednesday.

The Warriors exhaled with a tight, 46-44 victory against host St. Francis on the strength of a hot start and enough clutch plays down the stretch.

Leading by the final margin in the last minute, Wheaton Academy (18-8, 9-0 SCC Blue) missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunities to keep the Spartans alive.

St. Francis (15-9, 6-4) concluded its conference season.

The Warriors will aim for a perfect league run Friday when they face Marmion.

Gordon Behr secured the rebound of Jason Sullivan’s wild 3-point attempt as the buzzer sounded.

Behr finished with 15 points, joining Josh Ruggles

(14) in double figures.

St. Francis also had a pair of players in double digits in seniors Zach Prociuk (21) and Sullivan (10).

As it happened, a performance of Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” from the Spartans’ pep band as halftime wound down proved a harbinger. The teams traded jabs, with Ruggles’ 3 from the right wing late in the third quarter the play that got Wheaton Academy back on track for the stretch run.

The SCC rivalry game attracted its usual capacity crowd, although fans also contended with added traffic depending on their arrival time to a game that tipped 20 minutes after its scheduled 7:30 p.m. start.

St. Francis held a rehearsal for its upcoming production of “The Wedding Singer” – yes, Adam Sandler has infiltrated high school drama now – putting parking outside the Spyglass Center at a more special premium.

forced to park in the shopping plaza lot across Roosevelt Road, dodging ice as well as cars.

Wheaton Academy grabbed a 10-point lead at the end of one quarter and led by as many as 12 points early in the second, countering the Spartans’ 1 for 13 start from the field.

Seemingly primed for a blowout, the Warriors suddenly went cold while taking themselves out of several possessions due to foul trouble.

Wheaton Academy committed seven personal fouls by the end of the first quarter.

Prociuk, one of nine Spartans seniors, captained the climb back into the game, scoring 10 points in the quarter. His basket with 3:24 to play before halftime gave the Spartans their first lead at 1816.

His field-goal attempt in the closing seconds – at last some action after St. Francis held the ball for nearly a minute – led to Adam Hart’s buzzer-beating putback that provided a 23-21 advantage.

I feel like winning the sectional last weekend was just a way to end our senior year with an exclamation mark because we haven’t won a sectional in 12 years.

“It’s one of those things to say, ‘Oh yeah, that was my senior year when we won sectionals.’ There’s lots of excitement between Will and I to have accomplished this as seniors.”

East tied for 30th in the team standings at last season’s state meet, earning just nine points.

Shanel’s 1:53.93 in the 200 IM was good enough for eighth – three-tenths of a second from winning the consolation championship.

He later joined seniors Alec Carnell, TJ Bindseil and Taylor Nunnery on the 11th-place 200 freestyle relay.

A busy offseason of club and national events kept Shanel sharp. Once high school season started, the Saints set out with a goal to break the school record of 616,000 training yards, a mark they eclipsed Tuesday.

Those who see Shanel every day report little change in his demeanor since the season started.

“Just real calm, cool, collected,” Saints coach Joe Cabel said. “You’ve got to have that game face. He and all the seniors have that game face.”

Johnathan Harrell’s stay in a hospital Tuesday night was brief, and the Aurora Christian boys basketball standout likely will return to the floor for Friday’s regional championship game.

That’s a welcome development for Harrell and the Eagles after coach Pat McNamara acknowledged “a pall” hung over Johnathan the team after Harrell Harrell’s medical episode late in Tuesday’s game.

Harrell took an inadvertent kick to the stomach late in the IHSA Class 2A Aurora Christian Regional semifinal against St. Edward, and was eventually taken my ambulance to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora.

There was initial concern the senior guard might have suffered a spleen injury but tests showed Harrell was OK, and he was sent home with pain medication.

“He was still in pain,” said McNamara, who made a latenight hospital visit Tuesday before Harrell was released.

“He’s normally very outgoing,

very gregarious. He was a little more subdued but trying to smile. You could tell he was in pain.”

McNamara corresponded with Harrell on Wednesday, and signs point to Harrell having a good chance to play in Friday’s regional championship game against top-seeded IC Catholic Prep.

“He said he’s really sore,” McNamara said. “He won’t practice [Wednesday] but he should be good to go on Friday.”

McNamara said Harrell has “bad karma against St. Ed,” noting Harrell was assigned to the same hospital room Tuesday that he was in last year after suffering a concussion against the Green Wave.

With worries about Harrell lessening, the Eagles can turn their attention to gearing up for Friday’s regional final.

The Eagles beat the Knights on a buzzer-beater by the graduated Ryan Suttle to win a regional title last year, and also beat IC Catholic, 66-58, late this regular season.

McNamara isn’t putting much stock in the late-season result.

“Their coach, he’s a good coach.” McNamara said. “He didn’t show anything, let’s put it that way. They didn’t run their stuff.”

Johansmeier starts strong for EIU baseball There’s still plenty of snow on the ground and the thermometer still is dipping below zero at times, but Illinois colleges are playing baseball, a sure sign that spring …

Nah, I’m not buying it, either.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Eastern Illinois sophomore Jake Johansmeier of St. Charles already has an Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week award to his credit this season. The St. Charles North grad received the honor after starting and getting the win in the Panthers’ season-opening, 5-1 victory at No. 14 Louisiana-Lafayette.

“I just went out and executed my gameplan,” Johansmeier said. “It was a great start to the year and kind of got everyone excited about what we’re capable of doing this year.”

Johansmeier pitched six innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out four and walked three. The right-hander retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced and didn’t surrender a hit until the fifth against the Ragin’ Cajuns, who led the nation in home runs last year.

Since the opening win, Eastern Illinois has dropped seven straight, but all of those losses have come against teams ranked in the NCAA Division I Top 25.

“Nobody in our conference is as good as these teams,” Johansmeier said.

“We’re having guys seeing better pitchers than we’re going to see in the OVC. …

We’re all pretty confident we’re going to get top of the conference.”

The Panthers were picked to finish seventh in the 11team league in a preseason

Eastern Illinois finished in seventh place in the conference standings last season with an 11-17 record in league play, but the Panthers won six of their final 10 games, fueling optimism for this year.

Johansmeier posted a 3-4 record as a freshman with a 3.70 ERA. He held opponents to a .249 batting average while striking out 33 in 48⅔ innings of work. He made 20 appearances, starting eight of them.

“I started off in the bull-

pen as a closer, but some of the guys got hurt,” he said.

“I just kind of went out and threw the ball and see what happens.”

Johansmeier seemed to have things pretty well figured out by the time conference play rolled around.

He had a team-best 3.27 ERA in league action and held opposing batters to a .222 average. “[In] college baseball you have to have more control and better off-speed pitches than you did in high school,” Johansmeier said. “In high school, you can throw a fastball right by people. You have to be able to hit your spots [in college], otherwise, they’re going to hit it hard somewhere.”

Johansmeier was a solid hitter in high school, but he has yet to make a plate appearance in college.

“It’s hard at times not be-

ing able to grab a bat and go up and hit,” he said. “[But] it’s just as important for me to be in the dugout with everyone and root for them.”

Johansmeier looked at Northern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Ball State and Virginia Tech before settling on Eastern Illinois.

“It just felt right,” he said. “I was pretty sure that I would have a role coming in as a freshman.

“Coming out of high school … having the opportunity to come in and prove yourself to your coach and teammates is kind of what everybody wants.”

5 questions facing Cubs heading into spring games

Do you even know who they are?

With a first-year manager, five new coaches and 28 players (of 66) in their first spring training as members of the organization, most of the first two weeks of camp has been about introductions.

The next four weeks promise to be about answering questions like these:

And the plan going in this year is that lefty-hitting Luis Valbuena and righty Donnie Murphy will give the Cubs another

platoon there. But don’t sleep on Mike Olt. Once considered among the top prospects in the game, the third baseman acquired from Texas in the Matt Garza trade appears fully recovered from the vision/tearduct issues that derailed his 2013 season and has a chance to challenge for the job.

4. Is there a leadoff hitter in the house?

Renteria has mentioned Starlin Castro every time he’s been asked about his leadoff plans this year, and Castro said he prefers batting first or second. But Renteria plans to use March to decide.

Newcomer Emilio Bonifacio has experience there, but as a utility guy will he be in the starting lineup enough to consider him a regular option there? Four weeks might

not be enough time to find a clear-cut, much less ideal, choice.

5. How long can Javy Baez last with the big club?

Team officials have the organization’s top prospect slated to open the season as the starting shortstop at Class AAA Iowa. But his powerful bat provided many of the highlights of last year’s camp, and coming off a monster minor-league season the biggest question for him this month is whether there’s enough he can show this spring to win a job out of camp. At the very least, the opportunity to see him and other top hitting prospects Albert Almora, Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler promise to be among the top attractions during the Cubs’ exhibition schedule.

How can a critic describe in words a film with no words?

To paraphrase Steven Soderbergh when he presented “Visitors” at its triumphant world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall: I not only can’t, but I’ll try.

Filmgoers might be familiar with Reggio’s name from his previous three films – “Koyaanisqatsi,” “Powaqqatsi” and “Naqoyqatsi” – which coined a cinematic language all their own, combining a cascade of images, stream-of-consciousness editing, time-lapse photography and the ever-present Glass score, an evocative ostinato of moody foreboding.

With so many of Reggio’s techniques having been appropriated by the mainstream, the 73-year-old filmmaker has deconstructed his own grammar, filming “Visitors” not in the rapid-fire synaptic rhythms but as a series of stately black-and-white portraits of Earth’s inhabitants, their natural and built environments, and even a world far, far away.

The images – human, organic, architectural – possess both sculptural solidity and fleeting evanescence, with Reggio’s camera investing them with timeless meaning (in a sequence filmed at a cemetery, crypts rise out of the earth with the grace of ancient Greek temples). Even when they capture things in motion, they sit still, in an elegant faceoff between the two fundamentals of filmic structure, montage and mise-en-scène.

But these slow-moving, near-static shots also possess tantalizing ambiguity, throwing viewers back on themselves with gradually dawning questions rather than pat interpretations. The wide-open mouth of a man could be a grimace or a yawn or a cry or a laugh; a group of people sitting impassively, then erupting in emotion, could be watching a sporting event or a film or a video game; a crowd walking in slow motion can be seen moving either with the mechanistic detachment of so many assembly-line pistons or the graceful, tuned-in flow of a school of fish.

It’s all of the above, it’s none of the above – it’s really all up to you. As Reggio and editor and associate director Jon Kane intersperse shots of their human subjects with vistas of abandoned amusement parks, primordial swamps, empty buildings and a desolate lunar landscape, “Visitors” begins to take on cumulatively more spellbinding force, its juxtapositions inviting viewers simply to observe, internalize and

contemplate our own tumult, transience and primal creatureliness. Caught up in Reggio’s mutually mesmerizing gaze, viewers take part in two potent encounters: the first between the subjects and the camera, the second between those images and our own discrete consciousness.

For those willing to join Reggio in his extended meditation, “Visitors” offers a sublime, even spiritual experience, as well as a bracing reminder of cinema’s power to create a transformative occasion.

Like so many movies last year – “Gravity,” “All Is Lost” and “12 Years a Slave” among them – “Visitors” restores a sense of monumentality to a medium that has seemed so diminished by recent technological and commercial imperatives – so much so that Soderbergh has felt it necessary to retire. Luckily, he stayed close enough to present “Visitors” to a modern world that the film reflects in ways both celebratory and unbearably sad.

Ultimately, “Visitors” is about projection: literally, by way of the crystalline 4K digital images on view, and figuratively, as the dynamic that defines the essence of spectatorship – not as a passive process but, at its best, a transcendent one.

• “Visitors” received four out of four stars. The film is unrated and contains nothing objectionable. It runs 87 minutes.

Deep breathing is effective way to handle stress Dear Doctor K: How does deep breathing help to control stress?

Dear Reader: When we’re under stress, our muscles tighten, our heart beats faster, our blood pressure rises and our breathing quickens. The relaxation response is the opposite of the stress response; it puts the brakes on the biological changes that put us into overdrive. And it turns out we can elicit the relaxation response at will – by taking deep breaths.

The act of breathing engages the diaphragm and the muscles that hold the ribs together.

Instructions from your brain to these muscles cause you to breathe in and out. Most of the time, of course, you’re not thinking about breathing: It just happens. But it is your brain that is controlling it.

And you can consciously control it, as well. Try this: First, exhale. Then stop breathing for 10 seconds, and then take in a deep breath. You felt your lungs get smaller, and then get bigger, right? How did your brain do that?

When you exhaled, two things happened. The first involved your diaphragm, the strong sheet of muscle that divides the

Then, when you took a deep breath in, the diaphragm contracted. That caused it to drop downward, pulling the bottom of your lungs down with it. Shallow breathing hobbles the diaphragm’s range of motion.

The lowest portion of your lungs don’t get their full share of oxygenated air. That can make you feel short of breath and anxious.

Deep abdominal breathing, in contrast, encourages a full exchange of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide. This type of breathing slows the heartbeat and can lower or stabilize blood pressure.

It may seem like a strange thing to say about something we’ve been doing since birth.

But breathing – deep breathing – doesn’t come naturally to most of us. We must practice it. Start by finding a comfortable, quiet place to sit or lie down. First, take a normal breath. It may feel tense and constricted. Now try taking a slow, deep breath. The air coming in through your nose should move downward into your lower belly. Let your abdomen expand fully. Now breathe out through your mouth or nose. Deep breathing makes you feel relaxed.

Practice deep breathing for several minutes. Put one hand on your abdomen, just below your belly button. Feel your hand rise each time you inhale and fall each time you exhale.

You may be skeptical that deep breathing can counteract stress, but it does. Or, to be more precise, it counters the increased heart rate and blood pressure that stress causes. Try it – it really works.

A total of 3,123 honor students participated in the survey – and a shocking 80 percent of them admitted they got to the top of their class the easy way, by cheating. And those students said they weren’t caught because of lax enforcement by teachers.

The cheaters didn’t have any guilt feelings; most had adopted the attitude, “I cheat because everyone else is cheating.”

Sadly, many parents also don’t feel that cheating is such a big deal. Many of them have been cheating on their income tax forms for years.

Unfortunately, this cheating habit is passed on to their children.

It is easy to be distracted

Randy K. Milholland, the creator of several webcomics, said: “Typos are very important to all written form. It gives the reader something to look for so he isn’t distracted by the total lack of content in your writing.”

How depressing! But last year I bought a cartoon anthology and was surprised to find two typos.

Even if they snuck into the newspapers, why didn’t the cartoonist correct them before including them in his book?

At the bridge table, it is easy to be distracted on defense when one knows that partner has made a mistake. One petulantly plays the card nearest one’s thumb instead of asking oneself if the contract is still beatable.

In this deal, South was in four spades. West led the club queen and East won with his ace, dropping South’s king. What happened next?

At trick two, East shifted to his singleton heart jack. Yes, West should have overtaken with his queen, cashed the heart ace, and given his partner a heart ruff to defeat the contract. But thinking that East would have a second heart, West signaled with his 10.

Ticked off, East now led a trump. Gratefully, South drew trumps and discarded his last three hearts on dummy’s diamonds, which fell into his lap after one finesse.

East immediately berated West. But East should have paused to ask himself if there was anything he could have done.

Then he would have noticed that leading a diamond at trick three would have defeated the contract, cutting declarer off from the dummy before he has drawn trumps.

Keep your eye on the cards.

Spinning the color wheel with John Gidding THE WASHINGTON POST John Gidding, HGTV’s “’Curb Appeal” host, was the guest last week on The Post’s Home Front online chat. Here is an edited excerpt: Q: I recently inherited my dad’s house. It is a fieldstone-and-brown-brick house with a courtyard. Last year my dad had a dark brown tin roof put on the house. While I feel it does not match the more modern architecture of the house, I do not want to replace it. We do plan to replace windows and gutters and repaint the trim. The trim and gutters are also dark brown.

We would like to paint the trim and gutters a different color to brighten up the exterior. What colors would you recommend? We also plan to paint the front door a bright accent color.

John Gidding: So, you have a lot of brick and brown and you need to breathe some life

into the facade, it sounds like.

I think your answers lie in the term “ton sur ton,” which is a French decorating and fashion term meaning shade on top of shade. You can’t use white – too much contrast – but you can use biscuit and latte colors in layers of “shade on shade.”

Any chance of adding shutters? If so, I’d consider natural wood tone shutters in a medium hue, and then skew lighter with gutters and lightest with trim.

Q: Our 12-year-old Colonial home has its original dark black door. We loved it when we built the house, but it has started to look old and boring. Our siding is taupe and the brick is a faded red color.

Any ideas for making that door more welcoming?

JG: Front doors are made to have personality, so I’m glad to hear you’re going to make a change. Black doors (shiny, glossy and deep black) can be very sexy. I find that most homes with color schemes

that call for black doors tend to need any other color to be a dark version of that color.

You’ve got some options. If you want to be classic, I’d say get a very dark red – being careful not to skew brown or orange. Oxblood, 50 percent darker than usual. If you think the red will clash with the brick, go for a very dark navy blue. It will look black at first blush but will show its true colors as you walk toward or past it. It’s also a safe arena to experiment. Get a few colors and put them all on the door and see what they look like in various lights.

Q: I inherited my mother’s house, a 1955 white Colonial, and want to spruce up the outside. I will be painting the front door a rich blue. Is it necessary or advisable to remove the door and have it stripped to the bare wood before the painting? We’ll also be updating its hardware.

I recommend masking and painting with the door still swinging on the hinges. Make sure you’re careful about it, or hire a professional, but it’ll still be cheaper than the full strip. But please don’t let me dissuade you from doing a great job with your door.

Q: My home has HardiePlank shingles in a pale gray tone with white trim. Any ideas for planters for the slate front porch?

A: For shingle-style homes, I typically find planters that have the traditional design details like expressive brackets or tongue-and-groove facing, and white trim calls for white planters. If the planters have an inset detail, you could paint that a shade of gray two shades lighter than your home to tie them in. Wood would be the material to go with, although Extira (resin-soaked medium-density fiberboard) is also very durable and cost effective if you have them made.

Plant life accentuates pathways Q: Our large vacation home was destroyed by fire. I’m trying to make a small cottage fresh and fun so we can still visit while we wrestle with all the matters. Living room and dining room are painted Benjamin Moore’s Philadelphia Cream. How can I get coastal colors in the furnishings and have a small welcoming home for lots of people? And what color should I paint some vintage Queen Anne cherry tables?

A: Are you sure about painting vintage Queen Anne tables? I’m so sorry to hear about the fire, but hoping the fix-up goes smoothly for you.

As for coastal colors, I think most people skew way too saturated. Try to find a family of six to eight colors that are truly, truly pale. Use all of them pretty much equally around your cottage. I’d say four beiges (with one that skews almost yellow), two blues (very gray) and two greens (even grayer) and start painting your furniture and finding cushions and accents in those colors. A: Do emphasize the mid-century roots – why wouldn’t you? But since you’re not a fan, I would recommend at least embracing the off-center, asymmetric approach with a path to the front door that’s also nonlinear. In the landscape, plant an ornamental tree or bush where the path curves or meanders, so what you’re doing is creating a reason within the landscape for the path to fit around. This way, when the path arrives at those entry steps at an off angle, the reason is clear both within the landscape and also with the off-center door.

A: I was having a similar issue lately. I wanted a large-and-incharge dining room table and the best I could find was either too expensive or not my style. I hope this answer doesn’t annoy you, but the solution for me was butcher block from Ikea. I bought two sections and used one to create “waterfall” legs on either side of the other one, and the result is a massive and very generous table. That said, I also saw a pretty good one on www.cb2.com for around $450.
