hile working on a story about the Chicago Steel – the USHL team now housed at Fox Valley Ice Arena – I met with the Binetti family of Geneva. The family is hosting one of the Steel hockey players, Jake Nielsen.

Three of the four Binetti children play for the Cyclones youth hockey league, and I could tell that they so looked up to Jake and his Steel teammates as they left Fox Valley Ice Arena after practice one day.

ST. CHARLES – Dozens of visual and performing student artists are expected to participate in next week’s ArtsFest, the St. Charles Arts Council announced in a news release.

Set for March 4 to 6, the event aligns with Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month, nationally recognized observances emphasizing the value of art and art education for all

children. ArtsFest will feature a popup gallery at the BMO/Harris Bank building, 11 E. Main St., St. Charles, displaying visual and video artwork by students throughout the Fox Valley, according to the release.

The pop-up gallery runs from March 4 to March 27 with an opening reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 5.

Student performing artists are scheduled to appear at 7 p.m. March 4 as part of the P-ARTS Variety Show at St. Charles East High School, 1020

Dunham Road, St. Charles, the release states. Others will be highlighted during a student showcase set for 1:30 p.m. March 6 at the Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St., St. Charles, according to the release.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Some St. Charles students expecting to become Saints might instead face a future as a North Star.

The St. Charles School District 303 Board began discussing in committee Thursday the possibility of moving the Anderson Elementary School boundary from East High School to North High School.

Superintendent Don Schlomann said the change, which would only affect incoming freshmen, would ad-

dress the imbalance of students at the schools. According to data provided to the committee, North has 460 fewer students than East, and projections indicate that disparity could widen to 704 students by 2020.

“We need to close that gap somewhat,” Schlomann said.

Parents questioned this boundary change and another that would shift some students from Ferson Creek Elementary School to Corron Elementary School. They brought up concerns about splitting families between high schools, theorized that test scores factored into the decision and asked for

the district’s rationale.

The administration recommended the changes take effect for the upcoming school year, but board members supported delaying the high school implementation to the 2017-18 year.

Member Kathy Hewell suggested the postponement after asking if the switch would be difficult for the affected eighth-graders who already envisioned themselves as a Saint.

Schlomann accepted the one-year delay but cautioned the board from waiting any longer so the district can get the intended relief at East.

Board members also expressed in-

terest keeping families together by grandfathering in younger siblings.

Schlomann said some grandfathering is OK but said discussion is needed about “where does this end.”

Member Lori Linkimer said such a decision requires thought.

“This is big-time decision-making,” she said.

Board members agreed to revisit the issue in committee and to act on the Ferson Creek-Corron changes in March. Schlomann said the affected Ferson Creek students would be allowed to remain at the school as long as their parents provide transportation.

Heritage Woods throws party for residents ages 100 years and older

sbressner@shawmedia.com Heritage Woods of Batavia had six reasons to celebrate Thursday afternoon. The assisted-care facility celebrated six of its residents who are already 100 years old, or will be 100 years old this year.

Ann Jaschob, Irene Johnston, Pearl Holsey, Dorothy Tornberg, Marie DalPorto and Alice Lass all sported beautiful flower corsages, as Alex Talbott of Lucky Entertainment sang songs from the Golden Era. Irene Johnston, who was born in January 1916, moved to Heritage Woods from Davenport, Iowa in 2014 with her husband, Louie. She danced in her seat with her daughter, Linda Miller, and said “I used to dance a lot.

I [once] danced around the dance floor and lost my shoe.”

Two North Aurora men – Tom Martinez and John Shoemaker – are seeking the title held by Republican Rob Russell, who faces Dr. Bob Tiballi in the March 15 primary.

Martinez, who previously went by Tao, ran unopposed in the 2012 Democratic primary and lost to Russell in the general election.

Shoemaker is joining the race with 15 years of nursing experience and as an Aurora Township highway commissioner and former township trustee – roles that have given him experience in budgets and levies, he said.

Lee, 64, a retired businessman, said he is running because he does not agree with the way Hunt has run the office.

“I feel betrayed. I’m running because we have been betrayed,” Lee said. “Four years ago, we put this guy in office to do the right thing, and it turned out to be a disaster.”

Specifically, Lee said Hunt’s office is “48.5 percent over his budget.”

Lee said the budget for the auditor’s office was $217,267 in 2012, and in 2015, it was $322,668.

“He ... hired two people in the middle of a hiring freeze,” Lee said Hunt said Lee’s charges are “completely fabricated” and that the increased spending comes from approved budgets for different fiscal years.

“He’s ... not factoring in that the budget increases were all approved by the County Board – the 2 percent pay increase, health insurance and the cost of OpenGov,” Hunt said.

“We have been under budget for three years and returned $25,000 to the general budget.”

As to hiring two people, Hunt said he had a staff of two.

When one transferred and the oth-

er one retired, he said the replacements he hired did not constitute additional hiring during a hiring freeze.

‘I know his track record, and he’s not doing his job,” Lee said. “He still hired somebody he shouldn’t have done during a hiring freeze. I’m here to correct a problem we made four years ago and bring accountability back to Kane County and not hire people in the middle of a hiring freeze.”

Lee said the auditor’s job description calls for him to “approve and monitor all county contracts.” Yet, Lee said Hunt did not step in when it came to the sheriff’s shooting range, which went up in cost.

“If I built your house and said it would cost a quarter-million dollars, then I hand you a bill for $500,000, would you at least ask me why?” Lee said.

Hunt said his role as auditor is to see that the terms of a contract are followed.

“I don’t think he understands the function of the office,” Hunt said of Lee. “Contracts are approved by the County Board. … I don’t negotiate contracts.”

As he finishes his first term, Hunt, 63, of Sugar Grove, said he wants to continue serving because “there is more work to be done.”

“I’m really encouraged by what we accomplished in the first term,” Hunt said. “Maybe not everybody loves me, but what we’ve done in the office in terms of transparency and accountability is really unprecedented.”

The program – Little Hats, Big Hearts – was introduced to Delnor this year by Samantha Witt, a patient access specialist at the hospital in the new life maternity ward. Her son Mason was born last July with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), coarctation of the aorta (CoA), arterial septal defect (ASD) and bicuspid aortic valve disease, which were found by a delivery nurse and his pediatrician.

After a chamber of Mason’s heart took three days to close, more issues were discovered, and he was sent immediately to Ann and Robert H. Lurie

In the first year, the Little Hats, Big Hearts initiative was only in Advocate hospitals, and reached up to 300 hats.

Now it is implemented across 37 states and 33 hospitals in Illinois. In total, 95,000 hats were made this year, Schullo said.

“We’re putting a face to heart disease that we really didn’t have before,” Schullo said.

According to Witt, congenital heart defects are some of the most underfunded childhood defects and diseases. They are the highest ranking birth

defects, as one out of every 100 babies born will suffer from some sort of heart defect, Witt said.

“It shook me to my core because I did not realize, until it kind of affects you, how predominant this is and how many babies out there are going through the struggle of just trying to survive,” Witt said. “But I also want parents to know that it’s not a death sentence. There are so many kids out there that have heart defects and get the surgery and the check-ups and everything, and they’re OK.”

The Little Hats, Big Hearts cap is given to parents in a clear plastic bag, featuring a description of what a congenital heart defect is and how many infants are affected each day. Delnor is used to delivering around three to 10 newborns a day and has capped around 100 babies this month, Witt said.

“I’m gonna keep going to try to do as much as I can to help save as many kids as I can, and help as many parents as I can,” Witt said. “Because I don’t ever want a parent to feel how we felt when everything first happened.”

The summer of my discontent Strange things happen in our RIVER TOWN house. For example, empty botCHRONICLES tles and cans collect on the kitchen counter like they don’t know Rick all they have to do is pull out the Holinger drawer beneath the counter and drop into the recyclable bin.

Moreover, all the clean towels disappear, one by one, from the bathroom closet.

Maybe it’s just coincidence, but these strange things occur only when our two 20-something children come home for a weekend or vacation.

I’m beginning to suspect them of malfeasance.

“Life doesn’t begin at the moment of conception, nor does it begin at birth. Life begins after the children leave the house, the dog dies, the minivan is sold and the CD player is exchanged for a reliable radar.”

That would be funny if it weren’t true. I’m paraphrasing author Eddie Jones, whose description nails the life that my wife, Tia, and I have recently enjoyed. Once our 13-year-old dog Chewball died last year, we settled into our 60s, relaxed as the members of Congress. No more overnight soccer tournaments, torturous piano lessons or doggy lawn cleanup. We traveled. We chilled.

Until two weeks ago, when Tia heard about Summer, a 10-pound poodle rescue dog living with three Doberman pinschers and a boxer. Its owner must have been concerned the larger dogs might mistake Summer’s thin paws for toothpicks holding hors d’oeuvres.

So, Summer came to live with us on a three-week trial basis.

So far, it’s been a trial, but only to me – and not in any let’s-seeif-she’s-compatible-with-us sense.

I said she came to live with us. Rather, she lets us live with her. She occasionally makes room for us to join her on the couch to watch the news; once a day she’ll allow us each a two-minute shower; and only if Tia holds in her hand the brown shotgun pellets that pass for food will Summer eat.

Usually parked in Tia’s lap, Summer’s hearing beats those crossed lasers that astrophysicists cooked up to listen for gravity waves. She hears me opening the fridge or unwrapping a venison stick and goes ballistic because I haven’t invited her to the party.

“She’s just the right size and weight,” Tia says, arms around the somnambulant Summer slumped and furry as a boardwalk’s animal prize. “And she’s our age in dog years, which means she doesn’t need to play games and run around.”

Which also means she’ll soon need what my brother calls a “stable of doctors,” long-term health insurance and a subscription to O. But, truly, I can’t complain. Well, I can, and do, and have here, but I must admit, it’s nice having a dog back in the house.

Especially because with every dog we’ve pared down, from bearded collie, to collie-cocker-poodle-bichon mix, to pint-sized poodle.

Lee, a seasoned businessman, has proposed eliminating the office of the auditor – potentially consolidating it with another county office – as a way to shrink government. Hunt reasons that the function of the office would not go away; he should know after fulfilling its duties so well.

Montini too much for Geneva as Vikings’ season ends

ccasey@shawmedia.com SCHAUMBURG – The Geneva girls basketball team came into Thursday night’s IHSA Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional championship knowing it needed to play an almost perfect game to top Montini.

A three-point second quarter and 24 turnovers were not on the recipe for an upset as the Broncos pulled away late for a 64-47 win to end the Vikings’ season.

This was the 12th straight sectional title for the No. 1-seeded Broncos (312), but their first in Class 4A. The loss denied Geneva (25-5) the chance at its third straight sectional.

“They’re an amazing team; you just wish you don’t have to play them until state,” Geneva junior Grace Loberg said. “I’m happy I got the chance to go up against them. They’re a really good team and props to them for the way they played tonight.”

Loberg led Geneva with 14 points (6 of 10 from the field) and 12 rebounds, managing to stay on the court for all but the last 20.5 seconds, when coach Sarah Meadows emptied the bench to show respect to her graduating seniors.

The junior post also managed to stay out of foul trouble Thursday night, not picking up a single foul during the game. But the Vikings needed more than Loberg, especially during a 9:21 stretch spanning the second and third quarters when the Vikings went without a field goal. A jump shot by senior Taylor Williams gave Geneva a 13-10 lead at the beginning of the second quarter, but Loberg’s basket and a foul a couple minutes into the third quarter still saw the Vikings trailing, 29-16.

“I was a little nervous after that second quarter,” Meadows said. “I saw our heads drop a little bit, but I’m proud of the way we fought in the second half.

We started to make some shots in the second half, but there’s a reason (Montini) is as good as they are. They can hit big-time shots to silence any momentum you may have.”

Although the Broncos – who advanced to Monday’s Class 4A Hoffman Estates Supersectional against Trinity – held a double-digit lead for most of the

After Hart’s bucket made it 52-42, Montini ended the final minutes on a 12-5 run to silence any comeback hopes.

“We knew coming in that if they made a big shot, their crowd would get into it and they would gain the mo-

mentum,” said Montini junior guard Claudia Kunzer, who scored 16 points.

“Our big thing was we could not let that happen. We had to play tough defense and if they hit a shot to not get down on ourselves and keep going. That’s what we did.”

Both teams shook off rugged starts from behind the arc Thursday night.

Montini started just 3 of 16 in the first half, but knocked down two important 3s in the second half – by Kunzer and junior Kaylee Bambule (game-high 17 points on four 3s).

The Vikings knocked down 4 of 7 from long range in the second half after connecting on just 1 of 5 first-half attempts.

However, the shooting was never the problem. A combination of defensive pressure from the Broncos and Geneva’s decisions with passes led to

those 24 turnovers and several points from those miscues for Montini.

“We started to lose our composure when things went wrong,” Whitley said. “Composure is the hardest part against a team like that, in my opinion.

As important as playing good defense and offense is, keeping composure throughout is as big a part as any. I think once those turnovers happened, they kept piling on and before we knew it, we dug ourselves a big hole.”

While the Vikings do lose the likes of Williams, Colleen Grady and Ashley Shogren, Loberg, Whitley and company will be back. It was tough to see beyond Thursday night as the Vikings were forced to listen to the Broncos celebrate their victory, but that feeling – the one of frustration, sadness and disappointment all together – will not be forgotten.

Vikes hope Broncos are familiar foes, not foils QUICK READ Kevin Druley SCHAUMBURG – So Geneva beat Batavia twice in three tries and Batavia beat Trinity, which handed Montini one of its two losses this girls basketball season entering Thursday.

Yeah, and remember how Batavia pushed Montini ’til the last drop at the Broncos’ own Christmas tournament a couple months ago, too.

So went the reasoning that favored the Vikings at the meeting of two unfamiliar yet known commodities otherwise known as the Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional Final. Trouble for Geneva was, the transitive property of mathematics didn’t quite apply.

What stuck instead were the Broncos’ stingy pressure defense and timely 3-point shooting, which both conspired to eliminate Geneva and its bid for a third straight sectional title.

“We didn’t stop fighting until the end, which I think is great on our part,” Vikings junior post Grace Loberg said. “We kept getting closer, but then they kept scoring, too. I think we just all have to remember how this feels for next year and not let it happen again.”

That was a common refrain from a handful of not-so-bleary-eyed Vikings exiting the postgame locker room.

Geneva’s Blue Crue student section saluted the team’s eight seniors when eight seconds remained on the clock. Typically, losing such a haul of upperclassmen would stagger a program, but most of the Vikings’ seniors this season were reserves.

Forward Taylor Williams, who earned a starting spot before long behind her leadership and defensive intensity, provided the most crucial senior minutes, but four of the Vikings’ first five project to return in 2016-17.

“We’ll be back, you know,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said. “Our kids are competitors, and they’re going to want more next year, for sure.”

At the risk of being unpopular by going back to math class again, the odds are favorable the Vikings and Broncos will tangle in a key postseason spot next February. And possibly beyond.

Montini placed third in Class 3A last season and has won four of the past six state championships in that class. The program climbed to Class 4A in 2015-16 by virtue of the IHSA’s success factor rule for nonboundaried schools, legislation designed to level the playing field.

Don’t look now, but the supersectional-bound Broncos have won their first four Class 4A postseason games by 28, 62, 32 and 17 points.

“Yeah, we probably will see them again,” Broncos senior guard Tiara Wallace said. “We played a lot of 4A teams last year, so it’s not really something that’s new to us.”

Ditto for postseason success.

“We just stay focused,” Wallace said. “We buy in to what our past has done, and we try to match what they have done. We’ve got to stay focused, and we’ve just got to execute all our game plans.”

Geneva started the game by staying true to its scouting report, grabbing an 11-10 lead after one quarter.

The 6-foot-2 Loberg even won the tipoff from 6-5 Montini sophomore Lindsey Jarosinski before using her agility to beat her for a handful of

early baskets in the paint.

“We knew we had to get the ball into the middle, to the free-throw line, because we had watched film and we knew that would be open,” Loberg said. “But then we kind of stopped doing that after a while and we couldn’t get anything going. We had to stay on that.”

As the night progressed and Geneva’s turnovers rose, enthusiasm started to waver. That’s something the Vikings can’t forget, either. It’s all part of the storing process for next season.

Although graduating Cooper Hawkins will hurt that relay a bit, Sego said the present and future both seem bright.

“It’s exciting to think we’re going to state as sophomores,” Sego said.

“Not that it’s unheard of, but the fact that we’re making it now gives us really high hopes for the next two years if we all stay together.”

Garrett Clasen was happy, but probably wished he had company.

Sure, his West Chicago-Batavia coop boys swim team coaches, among others, joined him to offer support at last season’s IHSA state meet at New Trier, but the Batavia freshman was the only “Wild Dog” to jump into the pool and compete.

Now a sophomore for his second state meet, which begins with today’s prelims at Evanston, Clasen has that company.

Joining Clasen – who qualified for state in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke – are first-time state qualifiers and fellow Batavia students Cooper Hawkins, a senior, and fellow sophomores Ryan Sego and Keegan Hawkins.

Sego, who took second in the 100 butterfly at the St. Charles North Sectionals (51.32 seconds), knew with Clasen being the lone experienced state swimmer that he’d be the one to go to with questions.

“We don’t want to talk a ton about it because you don’t want to psyche yourself out, you know,” Sego said.

“But we’ve definitely talked about it some. Just how loud it gets in there and how crowded it is on deck. But I’m definitely excited because I’ve never been to this caliber of a meet before and it’s really a pretty big honor to get to compete.”

Clasen has high hopes, as well.

“You work all year to put yourself in a decent position for the state meet,” Clasen said. “There’s definitely some things that we can improve on like getting the relay time down some, but I think we’re at a good spot right now as a group.”

A top six preliminary finish earns a spot in the championship final, while placing seventh through 12th secures a spot in the consolation final.

Sego also mentioned that it’s near impossible not to have checked the IHSA website in order to see where he ranked with his butterfly time, but it comes down to performing well in today’s prelims.

Confident Hawks eye playoffs

editorial@kcchronicle.com The Fox Valley Hawks have completed their 2015-16 regular season schedule and begin their playoff push tonight.

First and foremost for the Hawks, who finished the regular season at 23-7-4 – 18-3-3 in the Illinois Suburban Hockey League (ISHL) – is the 2016 Blackhawk Cup State High School Hockey Tournament Combined Division play against Lane Tech.

The Hawks, who are seeded ninth in the tournament, will be facing 24th-seeded Lane Tech, members of the Illinois High School Hockey League North-Central Division, for the first time. Game time is 6:40 p.m. at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

Should the Hawks win, they would face the winner of Wheaton West vs.

Kankakee Irish at 1:55 p.m. March 5 in Bensenville.

“I was very happy we got seeded ninth overall,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “It shows we are getting some respect out there from other teams and other coaches. We earned our seed, I feel.”

The Hawks will be going into postseason play only missing fourth-line center and penalty killing specialist, forward Dom Iovenelli, who is out with a broken wrist. No timetable has been set for his return to the lineup.

“As the rosters for both teams are now frozen, we will not bring anyone up from the JV level,” Gabrielsen said.

“In fact, our JV team will also be facing Lane in a state game right after our game.”

For a team that only featured 12 skaters last season, things have improved for the Hawks this season from more players to more wins to more goals scored to a general level of intensity. That’s something Gabrielsen is hoping the team will use in the postseason.

“I think the boys understand that we are in a one-and-done situation now the rest of this season,” he said. “I do think one thing we have going for us this postseason is our experience from last postseason.”

“I think one of the big things we have going for us going into the playoffs is our confidence,” Kurtzhals said. “Knowing that we can stick with just about anyone we play is huge for us. But for me, I need to stress to my teammates that we take one game at a time and not lose our focus on the job at hand.”

Kurtzhals said the Hawks must play with a sense of urgency in order to be successful this postseason and to go further than the team did last spring.

“We just can’t be content with how the regular season went for us,” he said. “I know stats don’t matter to me as much. Wins do.”

In addition to the Blackhawk Cup, the Hawks will begin play in the 2016 ISHL Cougar Cup playoffs in March.

The club, who gained the top seed in the tournament, will open play against the fourth-seeded Leyden Eagles at 3:20 p.m. March 6 at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

Should they win, the Hawks would advance to meet the second-seeded DuPage Stars in the best-of-three Cougar Cup finals.

“I think if we play our game and score first, we should be fine against Leyden,” Pompilio said. “Even though we are ranked high than both Leyden and Lane Tech, rankings I do not think mean much at this time of the year.

We cannot come out cocky against either team and take no one lightly. We know how our league playoffs turned out last year. We don’t want a repeat performance of that this year.”

The Hawks lost to Joliet Catholic in the opening round of the ISHL playoffs last season.

The Burlington Central senior girls basketball player didn’t get there often during Thursday’s Class 3A Rochelle Sectional championship game against Rockford Boylan, but on the two occasions that she did, she delivered.

She connected both times from beyond the 3-point line in the third quarter and it allowed the Rockets to pull away from the Titans in the second half and earn a 34-25 victory.

“I like shooting from that spot a lot,” Pryor said. “In such a close game like this it feels like more than three points because it was so difficult to score. It helped us get away from them.”

Until the third quarter, the Titans had done a nice job of limiting Pryor’s touches. She scored all eight of her points in the second half.

“She’s a very good player,” Rockford Boylan coach Paul Perrone said. “We held her in check, but a good player like that is going to find an inch and make

On a night where points were at a premium, the Rockets found a way to finally create some space in the third quarter, outscoring the Titans, 11-4, to take a 27-19 lead.

“They really messed us up with their triangle-and-two defense,” Burlington Central coach Mark Smith said. “They forced some of our other players to make some shots so we had to be patient in the second half and finish things because I thought we missed too many free throws and layups in the first half.”

Burlington Central (26-4) only led, 16-15, at the half after reserve Madison Hodgson knocked down two free throws in the final seconds.

The Rockets went into the locker room with some foul trouble with Rebecca Gerke having picked up her third

with 2:20 left in the second quarter and with fellow senior starter Shelby Holt with two. That could’ve proved devastating for a Rockets team that doesn’t usually play deep, but they only committed four fouls in the second half and two of them came in the final minute when they had the game in control.

“Not that we were fouling in the first half, but I thought they let things go a little more in the second half,” Smith said. “It really wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it. We always talk about how we don’t care who scores, but to just look at the scoreboard, that’s the most important thing.”

Rockford Boylan (23-10) had a nightmarish night offensively, particularly in the third and fourth quarters. They only had five field goals in the second half and the final two of them came with just 72 seconds left in the game.

BC senior Kayla Ross led the Rockets with 16 points, doing a lot of it by attacking the basket, although she only converted 8 of 15 of her free throws.

The Rockets, who won their third sectional title in four seasons, will meet Morton at 7 p.m. Monday in the Bureau Valley Supersectional.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Mothers’ Club is taking applications for the 2016 Sherry Costello Memorial Scholarship Award.

The scholarship provides money to women who are currently earning a college degree in an effort to better themselves and their families.

All winners are determined based on need and academic merit, states a news release.

Each award can range from $500 to $4,000 and must be used strictly for educational expenses (such as tuition, books and fees). All funds

awarded will be sent directly to each award-winner’s college or university.

Eligibility requirements include women with dependent children, financial need and residency in St. Charles or surrounding communities in the Fox Valley area. All applicants must be enrolled in a degree program.

Suzette Murray, assistant vice president of career/technical education at Waubonsee Community College, has been appointed to the executive committee of the National Council of Workforce Education Board of Directors. Murray will serve a two-year term as vice president of programs beginning July 1. She has served in higher education for two decades and previously served as dean for business and career technologies at the college, states a news release.

The Fort Madison School Board has selected Erin Slater to be the next superintendent of the Fort Madison Community School District in Iowa. Slater has been an educator for more than 25 years.

She started as a classroom teacher in Aurora and worked in West Aurora School District 129 for 23 years. She has been married to her husband, Scott, for 23 years, and they have lived in Batavia for the past 20 years, a news release states. Their twin daughters, Madeline and Hannah, are seniors at Batavia High School and both have been admitted to the University of Iowa honors program in biomedical engineering.

Their son, Max, is an eighth-grader at Rotolo Middle School and will be an incoming freshman at Fort Madison High School.

Opioid addiction is on the rise Dear Dr. K: The news media says we suddenly have an epidemic of addiction to prescription opioid painkillers. These pills have been around for a long time. What’s changed?

Dear Reader: Developing treatments that reduce or eliminate pain has been one of the great accomplishments of medical science.

Until the past couple of centuries, our ancestors had no way to relieve the pain from a major injury or from a disease like cancer.

The first pain medicines, such as morphine, typically were given by injection. But then opioid pain pills (and syrups) became available. Examples include hydrocodone (used in Vicodin), oxycodone (used in Percocet), methadone, codeine and morphine.

These prescription drugs reduce the brain’s recognition of pain by binding to certain receptors in the body.

These medicines initially were used to treat acute, short-lasting pain from injury and longer-lasting pain from cancer. However, over the past 20 years, the medicines increasingly have been prescribed to treat chronic pain conditions (such as arthritis).

Some people seek these medicines, however, not to treat their chronic pain, but to sell them to other people. Some of those people just enjoy getting high. Others have an opiate addiction from heroin, and use the pills to prevent opiate withdrawal.

One problem with opioids is a person can develop a tolerance to these drugs. That means, over time, a person needs higher and higher doses to achieve the same degree of pain relief.

A second problem is the body can become physically dependent on these drugs.

A third problem is use of opioid painkillers is the biggest risk factor for addiction to heroin.

Finally, an accidental opioid overdose (such as forgetting you took some pills a few

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Wynne Armand, associate physician at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, about the current opioid epidemic. She noted much of the current problem stems from the fact so many more of these drugs are prescribed today. Four times as many painkillers were prescribed in 2015 in the United States than were prescribed in an average year in the 1990s.

Health officials are working to educate health-care providers on safe prescribing.

They also are educating the public about the risks of opioid painkillers.

Anyone who takes an opioid pain medicine should follow these guidelines to reduce the risk of abuse and overdose: • Store medication safely.

• Never share your medication with anyone else.

• Take the medicine exactly as instructed.

• Ask your doctor if a lower dose might be an option.

• Ask your doctor about other ways to manage pain. Many non-drug options can help.

• If the medication is not working well, talk to your doctor.

• Do not take overlapping prescriptions from multiple providers.

If you suspect you may be developing an addiction, ask for help as soon as possible.

To prohibit a college-age daughter from dating because “love relationships” messed up other teens’ lives is the equivalent of barring a teen from getting a driver’s license – or, indeed, riding in a car – because some teens are irresponsible drivers.

Try to enlist an ally to help you reason with your parents. If

you can’t think of a relative or family friend who might help, seek out your college counselor and ask this professional to have a talk with your parents about cutting the apron strings.

Dr. Wallace: I gave my best friend a nice gift for her 13th birthday. It cost $25 and I saved my allowance to pay for it.

Last week was my 13th birthday, and my friend gave me a $5 gift. I thought it was cute and I really appreciated it, but my mother was furious. She said it showed she really didn’t care much for me and advised me to stop being her best friend.

I don’t like this idea. Pam and I have been best friends for more than seven years, and we want to be best friends for a long time.
