County leaders eye ways to reduce sheriff’s shortfall

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County leaders are considering about $1.5 million in budget adjustments that would address all but $500,000 of the sheriff’s shortfall.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick presented the proposed adjustments to the Finance Committee on Wednesday, a day after Sheriff Donald Donald Kramer Kramer defended his decision to reduce the federal inmate population.

Because the program with the U.S. Marshal’s Service was expected to generate $2.5 million this year, Onzick said the sheriff’s office is facing a revenue shortfall of about $2.2 million after factoring in the program’s revenue from December and

January.

Kramer on Tuesday said his decision was influenced by inadequate staffing and gave board members a binder of supplemental materials, which he said “backs [his case] up 100 percent.”

He repeatedly said he was willing to meet the board halfway, but did not place a monetary figure on that phrase.

“I want to know they’re willing to compromise,” Kramer said after Tuesday’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting.

On Wednesday, board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, referenced Tuesday’s events and said he “really resented” that the sheriff acted like he was on the TV game show “Let’s Make a Deal.”

Members of the Judicial and Public Safety Committee had indicated they didn’t want to overwhelm other county departments or taxpayers in balancing the sheriff’s revenue shortfall.

The County Board has already approved a $225,000 budget adjustment, reducing the shortfall to about $2,044,000.

Onzick on Wednesday outlined another round of potential budget adjustments, which total $1,544,000.

The list contains savings from not housing the federal inmates ($344,000); savings from the sheriff no longer having a grant writer ($91,000); savings from overtime ($509,000); savings in vehicle fuel ($100,000); and a reduction of the public safety vehicle budget ($500,000).

If approved by the County Board, the adjustments would leave $500,000 to be addressed, Onzick said.

Board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, described the proposed adjustments as an “excellent start,” and Finance Committee Chairman John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said he appreciated the level of detail.

St. Charles fire chief earns international accreditation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet has been designated a chief fire officer by the Commission on Professional C r e d e n t i a l- Joe Schelstreet ing, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

Schelstreet will be honored during a presentation at the St. Charles City Council meeting Monday, the release states. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

Schelstreet is one of 1,017 designated chief fire officers worldwide, according

to the release.

The designation is awarded for meeting professional, educational, technical and community service achievements, as well as fulfilling prescribed standards of performance, ethics and conduct, the release states.

To maintain the designation, the chief officers must show future achievement in four areas: professional development, professional contributions, active association membership and community involvement, according to the release.

“Achieving this credentialing status is a significant accomplishment for Chief Schelstreet,” City Administrator Mark Koenen wrote in the release. “He has provided exemplary service to the department and the community for many years, and this designation clearly illustrates his commitment to provide the highest qual-

ity of service to the citizens of St. Charles.”

The Commission on Professional Credentialing is an entity of the Center for Public Safety Excellence Inc., the release states.

The commission consists of individuals from academia, federal and local government, and the fire and emergency medical services professions.

Schelstreet joined the St. Charles Fire Department full time in 1988 as a firefighter, according to the release.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 1992, captain in 1997, assistant chief in 2003 and chief in 2013. Schelstreet holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University, a master’s degree in management and organizational behavior from Benedictine University, and a master’s degree in fire and emergency man-

agement from Oklahoma State University.

Batavia seeking changes to development review process Proposed industrial park at center of controversy

proposed changes to the process.

Skokie-based The Missner Group had proposed to build two large industrial buildings on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. That application is now considered closed because The Missner Group had missed a deadline to submit plans to the city for its proposed industrial park.

The group Keep Batavia Neighborhoods opposed the

project.

“We believe a significant issue with the current conceptional plan review process is that staff and the Batavia City Council are reviewing a project without any substantive public input,” City Administrator Bill McGrath and Community Development Director Scott Buening wrote in a memo. “While we did have a number of objections initially from residents in the

Allen drops out of Batavia Park Board race

Mark Allen on Wednesday announced that he was dropping out of his race against incumbent John Tilmon.

“The incumbent who I would be running against is an outstanding fellow,” Allen said. “He is a good man for the job. I support him 100

percent. Basically, he’s got a better platform than I do.”

The election is April 7.

Allen said one of his major concerns was the water quality of the Fox River, primarily the impoundment area behind the dam in Batavia, which includes the Depot Pond. He is a member of the group Friends of the Fox River, “He has been there for six years,” Allen said of Tilmon.

“He knows the ropes. There’s

a hundred other things besides water quality in the Depot Pond when you’re a commissioner on the Batavia Park Board.”

Tilmon is vice president on the Batavia Park Board.

While the Batavia Park Board race now is uncontested, April’s election will feature eight candidates running for three spots on the Batavia School Board, along with a race in the 1st Ward for the Batavia City Council.

To allow for more public comments early in the planning process. McGrath and Buening are proposing such changes as giving the public up to 20 minutes to comment on a development proposal.

But Keep Batavia Neighborhoods spokeswoman Joyce Keane told aldermen the

changes don’t go far enough.

At Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Keane called for aldermen to “make city staff accountable,” and require that staff follow the letter of the law. Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said he wants answers, as well.

“If there was some wrongdoing by the staff, I want the answers to that,” Wolff said.

“We have to figure out a way to restore the integrity.”

JUNIOR SAILOR OF THE YEAR Former St. Charles man earns prestigious honor

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Former St. Charles resident Christian Alvarez has had a memorable past few months – he led an armed forces kickball tournament, met President Barack Obama and on Friday will receive a top military award.

Alvarez, a U.S. Navy petty officer second class, will be honored as the U.S. CENTCOM Junior Sailor of the Year during a ceremony on Friday at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.

“It was a relief,” Alvarez said of winning the award. “It was very calming, I guess you could say. I was honored, I felt wonderful.”

Alvarez, 28, said he was stressed during the final step for the honor – going before an awards board during the first week of February – because it was the same week as the inaugural kickball tournament he had been planning for six weeks.

Alvarez was in the running for the annual award after earning a quarterly junior award for fourth quarter 2014, said Maj. Andrew Aranda, a spokesman for U.S. CENTCOM, also known as U.S. Central Command. The command is responsible for U.S. security interests in 20 nations, including those in the Middle East.

“It’s very high-qualified individuals that even get considered for this,” Aranda said of the award. “ [Alvarez] made a very positive impression to the senior leaders here.”

1995 when he was 9 years old.

He later attended St. Charles North and East high schools but did not graduate from either school.

Alvarez said he did not fully apply himself in school and sometimes refused to do homework, which cost him some good grades. He said he did enjoy subjects like math and English and remembers teachers, such as Jennifer Shoaf, his creative writing instructor at St. Charles North in 2004.

“He was definitely one of those unforgettable students,” Shoaf said. “He had the personality that you just know he was going to do something.”

Shoaf said Alvarez seemed

to be in search of something and observed him deep in thought many times.

Alvarez attended both high schools because his parents were divorced and lived separately. When he started living with his dad, Margarito Alvarez, during the end of his senior year, he faced transportation issues and missed final exams. He decided to earn a GED quickly instead of sitting through summer school.

Alvarez said a conversation with his father in 2007 steered him toward the military and he enlisted that year.

His life turned around once he joined the U.S. Navy and married his girlfriend, Ashley, in 2008, his mother Silvia Lock-

wald said.

“I felt very compelled to share his story because the pride I feel for him is bursting at the seams,” Lockwald wrote in an email.

Naval duties took Alvarez and his wife to San Diego for two years and then Japan for three years before he was transferred to MacDill Air Force Base. When military staff asked for volunteers for Obama’s visit in September, Alvarez wanted to sign up for every opportunity to be near the nation’s leader.

Alvarez said he stood out like a sore thumb in his white naval uniform at a banquet recognizing military families, but he and his wife were able

to meet and speak with Obama for a few minutes at the event.

“It was definitely one of the highlights of my life and my naval career,” Alvarez said of his Obama encounter. “He was very, very easy to talk to from what I remember.”

Alvarez is expecting his father, stepfather, mother-inlaw and godfather to join his wife and two children – Margot, 6, and Luca, 2 – at Friday’s ceremony. He said his decision to join the Navy was a shock to most of his family at first, but he said it was the best decision of his life.

“Obviously hard work goes into it, but I’ve absolutely loved being part of the Navy,” Alvarez said.

The appointment of Law and Sims to district-level positions creates principal vacancies at Heartland and Harrison. Officials said they hope to name new principals before the end of the school year.

The district hired Michael Wilkes to replace Technology Director Elizabeth Janowiak, who also will retire this year.

Wilkes’ salary will be $112,500, officials said.

Wilkes worked at Joliet Township High School District 204 in Joliet, where he served as application services manager for six years.

Heartland Elementary School Principal Adam Law will replace Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Craig Collins, who is retiring at the end of the school year, officials said.

Harrison Street Elementary School Principal Shonette Sims will become the new director of learning and teaching.

Sims will replace Andrew Barrett when he assumes the role of assistant superintendent for learning and teaching this summer, officials said.

“We just want to put plans out there and see what everybody thinks,” said Laurie Metanchuk, director of community affairs for the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

The purpose of the Land Acquisition and Enterprise hearing at 8:30 a.m. today is to present proposed plans to extend the Great Western Trail within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles Township. The plan would extend the Great Western Trail to Randall Road.

During the Planning and Utilization hearing that will

follow at 9 a.m., plans will be presented for improvements to the Little Woods Forest Preserve, including the installation of a parking area, restroom, picnic shelter and about 1.6 miles of trail.

The meetings will be at the district’s headquarters, 1996 S. Kirk Road, Geneva.

The district has teamed with the city of St. Charles and the St. Charles Park District to acquire railroad right of way for the purpose of extending the trail system east to Randall Road. The district plans to apply for a grant that would reimburse the district up to 50 percent of the acquisition cost.

The district also plans to apply for a grant for the Little Woods project, estimated to cost $230,000. Grant funds would reimburse the district up to 80 percent, or $184,000 of the costs once the project is completed, district officials said.

Adult Activity Center keeps seniors in the know, on the go

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com Think of it as one-stop shopping for everything a healthy, active senior (or one who wants to be or stay that way) needs.

From lifelong learning classes and programs that can help members do everything from reviewing the rules of the road to sprucing up their wardrobe, wellness workshops that can inform them about ways to stop smoking or understand Alzheimer’s disease, and day trips to the area’s top attractions, the Adult Activity Center at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles is a hive of activity and a haven for older adults looking to hold the aging process at bay.

Designing new programs that both capture members’ attention and introduce them to a subject or area attraction they may not have known about is the fun part of the job for adult activities supervisor Meghan Papke. Often working in conjunction with Jeanette Joy, naturalist assistant at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, Papke is able to craft

classes and outings that capitalize on the many public gardens and natural attractions this area has to offer.

One such successful program being offered again this spring is “Funtastic Fridays.”

These monthly day trips offer an educational component about nature that can really showcase the wealth of information available to Adult Activity Center members from the St. Charles Park District’s naturalist staff.

“We will visit a place where we can really focus on the knowledge Jeanette has about what’s going on in the natural world,” Papke said.

“There’s not a question you can’t ask her.”

Future “Funtastic Friday” trips will visit the Chicago Botanic Garden in April and Blackberry Farm in Aurora in May. These trips depart from the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., St. Charles, at 9 a.m. April 17 and May 8, respectively.

As with all Adult Activity Center-sponsored day trips, transportation is provided by the center. And whether it’s for a short jaunt down to Aurora or a longer trek into

Chicago, so many members tell Papke they appreciate not having to worry about how they’ll get to where they’re going.

“This is another attractive part of being an AAC member,” Papke said. “They say, ‘Oh, it’s so easy. We’ll just go with Meghan.’ ” “Going with Meghan” this spring can mean taking part in cultural outings, such as the “Sounds of Shakespeare” performance by the Elgin Symphony Orchestra on March 8; the popular variety show by Patty Waszak at White Fence Farm in Romeoville on May 12; or productions of “Magical Motown Music Review” on May 27 and “Menopause the Musical” on May 30 in Aurora.

“We try to offer the kind of day trips that someone wouldn’t necessarily do on their own,” Papke said. “It’s fun and easy to do these trips, to have the peace of mind that everything is taken care of.”

And taking care of body and soul is at the heart of the Adult Activity Center’s mission. Wellness Workshops focus on important and often difficult topics to offer seniors

vital information in a clear, confident and caring way.

In a workshop March 5, a representative from a mental health organization will discuss the symptoms and types of depression, and offer advice on how and where to seek help when someone, or someone attendees love, may be affected.

Other programs, such as “Brain Fitness” in May, discuss some of the lifestyle habits that can affect mental acuity, while still others help seniors understand important care decisions, such as housing choices and Medicare programs.

BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 Board members Tuesday voted 4-2 to become a part of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School based at Aurora University.

Voting “no” were board members Jon Gaspar and Gregg Hodge.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The school is a partnership of Aurora University and West Aurora, East Aurora and Indian Prairie school districts.

Oswego’s school district had been part of the partnership, but later withdrew. Batavia’s school board has applied for membership in the STEM partnership school, and its governing board has accepted the application.

As proposed, 50 Batavia students from third through eighth grade would go to the school. In addition, the district would supply two teachers to the school for a two- to fouryear period.

The school opened in August. The cost for Batavia students to attend the school would be an estimated $7,400 a pupil. Transportation is provided by the school districts in the partnership.

In deciding recently not to join the partnership, Kaneland School District 302 Board members cited cost as the main factor. The cost to the district would have been estimated at $375,000.

Gaspar recently voiced financial concerns about the proposal.

The school board still needs to approve a budget for the STEM school.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen on Tuesday decided now is not the right time to ask the city of Aurora to remove a gate at Wagner Road and Mesa Lane.

Staff had recommended the city approach Aurora officials with a request to remove the gate.

“All traffic in this subdivision, including school buses, waste collection vehicles and delivery vehicles, must now use Wagner Road in Batavia,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening wrote in a memo. “This causes the traffic volumes to be inflated along Wagner Road and Wind Energy Pass.”

Based on traffic counts taken in spring 2014, the average daily traffic along Wagner at the city limits line is about 580 vehicles, Buening told aldermen.

City staff recommended the gate be removed.

“If the gate were removed and traffic from the subdivision allowed to exit to the south, we feel the traffic volumes would be cut approximately in half on this road,” Buening wrote.

Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit called the gate a barricade.

“Why do we call it a gate?”

Chanzit asked. “It seems like a barricade. What practical use is a feature like this?”

Sixth Ward Alderman Nick Cerone didn’t support taking down the gate.

“I don’t see a huge benefit in tearing it down,” Cerone said.

Several aldermen said discussion about the gate’s removal was premature. Third Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann made a motion – which was supported by the majority of aldermen – that discussion be tabled until development plans for the area are presented. A developer previously proposed to build two large industrial buildings on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass.

Not everyone supported tabling the discussion.

“I think we should let Aurora know how we feel now,” 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac said, in voting against the motion.

Perks of being a waitress What do flipping greasy hamburgers, cleaning popcorn off of movie theater floors, collecting money at a cash register and dealing with aggravating customers all have in common? Well, they all get combined into a bowl of stressful chaos to create the reality for thousands of teenagers when it comes to part-time jobs.

Let’s face it – no job that hires youth employees is going to be glamorous. While teenagers with jobs often have to balance countless other things on top of being an employee, they’re often willing to just sulk with a wet mop in their hand or put up with a couple of rotten customers who demand more ketchup, as long as the cash in their pockets expands. While I’ve heard horror stories from some of my friends who work in the fast-food and retail industries, I’m thankfully not in their same situation.

I work at a banquet hall as a waitress, and I love my job so much that I actually get excited before I come in.

Not only are my co-workers some of the nicest people, but the job is never boring nor tedious. Plus, I actually think collecting plates and cleaning up is fun.

At the banquet hall, I sometimes work a wedding, and some days it may be a Boy Scout troop meeting or a family reunion. When I go in to work on any particular day, I never know what or who to expect. Although I’ve been working there for a couple of months, I’m always learning new tips or getting surprised by something that has never happened to me before.

Having witnessed so many weddings since working there, I’ve picked up a few dos and don’ts for my future wedding reception in regards to what kind of flowers I’m going to

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina get, what colors I’m going to choose for bridesmaid dresses, what my cake will look like, etc. And the best part about working at a banquet hall: the free food. You never grow hungry, as your stomach is always packed with scrumptious delights.

And while my job is generally lovely, there are still some guests that I wait on who can be troublesome. All the waiters/ waitresses out there and I have a few words to say for whenever you’re eating at a banquet hall: 1. Don’t complain about the food to the waitresses, because we ourselves did not personally cook it. 2. Don’t leave one piece of broccoli left on your plate and then get upset when a waitress takes your plate away, thinking you’re done eating. 3. Don’t look confused when we tell you that we don’t give take-home boxes for buffet meals. 4. Say thank you; it makes our day. 5. Know if you’re snobby or obnoxious to your server, we will be talking about you the entire night (and not in a good way). Just be kind.

In all honesty, my job brings me so much joy.

Every time I work, I always come home with an amusing story to tell my family and friends. Going to work should be an adventure, and I sure get that at the banquet hall.

Wasted energy, misplaced focus THE WASHINGTON POST Climate change warriors of all stripes were focused on the White House on Tuesday, where President Barack Obama vetoed a bill that would have authorized construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Like all the other attention slathered on this overblown issue, the focus was misplaced. It would have been better placed on the Capitol, where Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Maryland, without much fanfare, reintroduced a bill that would address the nation’s greenhouse-gas emissions in a serious way.

There have been many advocates for this sort of policy over the years. Van Hollen’s market-based version is elegant and effective. It would put

a slowly declining cap on the country’s carbon dioxide emissions, requiring an 80 percent cut by 2050, and rely on basic economics, not Environmental Protection Agency commands.

Firms putting coal, oil or natural gas into the U.S. market would have to buy permits that account for the carbon dioxide those fuels release when burned. That is, energy companies would finally have to pay the full cost of the products they sell.

The buying and selling of limited numbers of permits would raise the cost of carbon-heavy goods and make alternatives relatively more attractive. In their everyday buying decisions, companies and consumers would determine how best to wring greenhouse emissions out of

the economy.

The government would raise a lot of money in permit auctions, but Van Hollen’s bill would give all of it back, sending rebate checks to every American with a Social Security number. Van Hollen reckons 80 percent of U.S. households would come out ahead, despite the higher cost of gasoline and other carbon-dependent products.

Encouragingly, anti-Keystone XL leader Bill McKibben joined Van Hollen on a Tuesday conference call boosting the bill.

This is a market-based plan that environmentalists should march for and Republicans should embrace. The impact would dispatch Keystone to the footnote it deserved in the first place.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Businesses combine love of wine, painting Chilled Palette, Vino van Gogh leading trend

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte took a sip of wine as she went about putting the finishing touches on the cobblestone driveway of her “Country Cherry Blossom” painting.

“The wine helps get the creative juices flowing,” Lambillotte said.

Lambillotte was part of a class offered recently at The Chilled Palette, a business built around the idea of having a drink and painting for recreation. The Chilled Palette opened in June 2014 at 500 S. Third St., Suite 117, in downtown Geneva.

“We offer an experience for people to come in, relax, have fun and express their creativity,” said owner Miriam Kuta. “They come home with a piece of artwork they’ve created.”

She previously had owned a paintyour-own ceramics store in Crystal Lake.

Kuta has a degree in recreation and said she has painted all of her life.

“To me, this is a form of recreation,” Kuta said. “I supply everything they need – paints, brushes, canvases, easels and aprons. Wine and beer are available for purchase.”

In addition, The Chilled Palette also puts on birthday parties for kids and hosts offsite parties.

Lambillotte and her husband, Charlie, were both enjoying the recent experience.

“It’s really relaxing,” Sheavoun Lambillotte said. “And it’s super easy.

Anybody can do it.”

Her husband agreed.

“I’ve never had an art class,” Charlie Lambillotte said. “I’ve always wanted to explore my artistic side.”

Helping guide those in the class was art teacher Kate Norkus. Kuta also teaches classes.

And, during the recent class, Kuta was giving guidance to Christina Foreman. It was Foreman’s third class.

they were just opening,” Foreman said.

“It looked like fun. It’s been a good experience.”

Foreman admitted she doesn’t have an artistic background. And she didn’t feel any pressure to make her painting look perfect.

“There really is no wrong way to do it,” Foreman said.

The concept of sipping wine and painting is a trend that is spreading across the country. Brenda Schmidt started her Vino van Gogh business in 2011.

Vino van Gogh hosts events at local venues. It held its first event at a restaurant in St. Charles, and now the company operates out of nine states.

“I look at myself as a business builder for the community and local restaurants,” Schmidt said. “We partner with them to have events during their off nights and bring them more business.

The full restaurant menu is available to guests. Usually they will have a special or two for our guests.”

Vino van Gogh had an event this week at Riverside Pizza and Pub in St. Charles.

Schmidt emphasized the mobility of her business.

“People don’t have to drive as far to get to our events because we have one near where they work or live at different times during the month,” Schmidt said.

She has an idea why combining wine and painting has become a popular trend.

“I think it’s really about the experience,” Schmidt said. “In today’s world, we are totally plugged in all day long and we’re multi-tasking. Our brains are really wired around doing things in a very efficient manner.”

Schmidt said she tries to make the experience as fun as possible.

“Often there is music in the background, and it’s not uncommon for people to start singing along to the music while they’re painting,” she said. “It frees ourselves up from this very structured mindset we have hour after hour every day. It’s a very therapeutic release for us to let that creativity come out.”

Kuta said she likes seeing the satisfaction that people get after creating a painting.

“I hear people saying, ‘I can’t believe I just did that,’” Kuta said.

Geneva’s FoxFire specializes in seafood, steaks, chops GENEVA – FoxFire in Geneva has been around since 2003, specializing in steaks, seafood and chops. The restaurant also boasts an extensive wine list with more than 50 wines served by the glass. Wooden trellises and slow-moving fans give the impression of summer in the South, while the vintage posters donning the rustic brick walls exude an urban vibe.

Over time, the restaurant has managed to woo diners enough to win the Open Table “Diner’s Choice” award in 2014, as well as the Kane County Chronicle’s “Best Steaks” honor.

Dining at the white-tablecloth-set establishment on a Monday for lunch provides the perfect opportunity for those who usually try to steer clear of high-ticket-item steakhouses, to come in and give it a try.

Also, all day every Monday, diners can order a half-pound burger (normally $13) with sides for only $6.

Everyone seated at the bar seemed to be ordering them, and it didn’t look as if a discount meant a dip in quality.

Because I wanted to have a go at the restaurant’s specialty items, I overcame the urge to order one of the numerous,

Seated for lunch (served from 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Saturday) at a four-top table near a skylight at the front of the restaurant, my dining companion and I opted for the recommended Stuffed Mushrooms ($11) to start.

Our waitress delivered three jumbo mushroom caps stuffed with a savory blend of Italian sausage and cream cheese that seemed to ooze on first contact.

The mushrooms were finished with a Dijon honey mustard drizzle, which I found to be an interesting touch.

Our waitress also recommended the Asian Calamari ($12), which comes lightly dusted in flour and yellow corn meal, and is deep fried. The calamari is served with a sweet red chili sauce and hoisin – a glaze commonly used in Chinese cuisine – drizzle.

I opted for one of the house specialties for my entree: the Napa Valley Chicken ($19). My dining companion selected a medium-cooked, 14-ounce Rib Eye Steak ($32).

Both of our entrées came with soup or salad and a side.

I opted for salad with ranch dressing and garlic mashed potatoes, while my dining companion chose the soup of the day, chili, and french fries.

As a self-proclaimed aficionado of ranch dressing, often returning to restaurants for the sole purpose of dipping whatever I order into said dressing, I will be returning to FoxFire for the ranch. But enough about dressing, the chili was delicious with each bit ending with the subtlest kick of spiciness.

The Napa Valley Chicken, made with a boneless, all-natural, hormone-free, skinless breast of chicken sautéed with green grapes and finished with a white wine cream sauce, set atop a bed of garlic mashed potatoes, was beautifully seasoned, creamy and succulent.

The gargantuan slab of beef on my dining companions plate looked great, but after slicing into it, we quickly realized it was cooked well done, instead of medium.

As soon as we alerted our waitress, she apologized and was happy to have the chef make us another at no additional cost. The reordered steak came out in no time at all, which we both appreciated.

The well-seasoned steak tasted tender and juicy.

I loved the atmosphere at FoxFire, and the wine list proved very enticing, but having been tempted by all the burger-wielding going on around the room on my first visit to FoxFire, I think it’s safe to say, I’ll be back for that burger ... oh, and the ranch, too, of course.

Unfolding without an intermission in just 90 minutes, the play presents quite a mouthful for theatergoers to digest, but bite after bite adds up to a hearty feast.

successfully mines the constantly shifting up-and-down rhythms of everyday life.

“The Big Meal” is artfully directed by Bernie Weiler and performed by a revved-

up ensemble of eight who seamlessly slip into so many roles that at times it’s easy to get muddled about who’s who. Just go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

As Weiler aptly points out in the director’s note, let the cast do its work “portraying the fluid and disjointed nature of our communal existence.”

All the action takes place at restaurants, reception halls and family dinners. It starts when Nikki (Samantha Chmara), a waitress, serves a handsome customer, Sam (Cullen J. Rogers). There’s instant chemistry between them, and a moment later the scene shifts as the two are on their first date, sharing a table

at the same restaurant.

At the outset, Nikki makes a point of insisting she is “not looking for a relationship” and is more interested in hooking up with Sam than knowing details about his personal life.

In the blink of an eye, years elapse and the two encounter each other once again at the restaurant, where they ditch their respective dates and pick up where they had left off.

Again, in rapid-fire mode, the audience witnesses Nikki accepting an engagement ring from Sam. Next, a family gathering finds them as a middle-aged couple (now played

by Frank L. Wiltse and Jeanne Scurek) with their two bicker-

ing children, Maddie (Larissa Catalano) and Robbie (Ethan Isaacson). Also present are Sam’s parents, Jack (Richard Westphal) and Alice (Patricia Rataj).

Through the decades, “Big Meal” touches on the milestones its key characters experience: deaths and births, sudden illness, joyful weddings, estrangement, marital infidelity and birthdays.

Sam and Nikki marvel at how their offspring have “grown too fast.” By the final curtain, the couple (Westphal and Rataj) are in their senior years, sitting down for a meal at their old haunt, the place where they first met – ready to write the final chapter.

No outright Upstate Eight Conference River championship, either.

Larkin snapped Geneva’s 16-game winning streak on Wednesday as the Vikings dropped their regular season finale, 57-51.

Geneva (25-3, 12-2 UEC River) has five days to regroup for Tuesday’s home, regional semifinal matchup against either DeKalb or Batavia.

Geneva coach Phil Ralston said “we own this [loss], coaching staff, players. We own it.”

“Very nonchalant, not Geneva brand ball,” Ralston said.

“We deserved to lose this game.

Geneva junior center Loudon Vollbrecht thought the Vikings never established their style of play.

“We didn’t come out as focused as we normally do,” Vollbrecht said. “We didn’t start with an inside game. We started shooting from the outside, which isn’t what we normally do. And our defense wasn’t as strong as normal.”

The Royals led by eight, 4133, on a short Daniel McFadden jumper early in the fourth quarter.

Geneva crept back as close as 43-40 on a three-point play

Passing and cutting in the waning moments against Upstate Eight Conference River Division foe Batavia without the intent to urgently shoot, Callaghan and Ludwig absorbed the casual applause that accompanies such strategies.

The senior duo heard plenty of personalized recognition when coach Tom Poulin removed both players with 1:38 remaining in an eventual 5437 victory, prompting instant reflection.

“I played here for four years, and I got to play on this court every year, and there’s nothing like it,” said Callaghan, a forward. “When they shut the lights out for starting lineups … and we walk out there, and there’s been so many good memories here. I’m probably going to tear up when I get home, because I’m going to miss this place.

“But we’ve got a long run

ahead of us. We’re not done yet. So that’s what we’re looking forward to, is the postseason coming up.”

It took the team bus an hour to get to Elgin because of the weather. As a result the squad was not able to warm up as long as usual before the game.

Classmate Andrew Lewarchick, a diver and first-time prep swimmer, will toe the Trevians’ board for the first time at today’s practice.

The former gymnast and son of St. Charles Swim Team club coach Tim Lewarchick, Andrew Lewarchick broke Jeff Baron’s 30-year-old school record for an 11-dive total with a runner-up score of 474.50 at sectionals. Unfa-

miliar surroundings won’t faze him, he insists.

“I haven’t been on many different boards, but it’s all in your mind,” Lewarchick said.

“I think that if you’ve trained hard enough, that on any board, you can do anything.”

Several Saints worked to recruit Lewarchick for the past several seasons.

“We were like, ‘Oh, you’ve just got to learn how to land on your head this time instead of on your feet,’ ” Tarpey said.

“He obviously got the hang of it pretty fast.”

A friend of many current teammates since his family moved from Quincy when he was 7, Lewarchick hasn’t just used his skills to fit in.

“I really like the team aspect of it,” Lewarchick said.

“I’m on a team with my friends. I get to use some of the skills I’ve learned in gymnastics to good use, and it’s just really fun helping out the team.”

As “Mr. Heart” can attest, the same tight-knit group of Saints doesn’t have to stop with that refrain after this weekend.

ST. CHARLES – Johnny Tarpey earned the nickname “Mr. Heart” from St. Charles East boys swimming coach Joe Cabel for his undying passion in and out of the pool.

Discussing the Saints’ prospects for this weekend’s IHSA state meet at New Trier and beyond, Tarpey hardly broke character.

“This is the best we’ve looked going into state in the past several years, but also, none of us are graduating,” said Tarpey, a junior. “So next year, we’re still going to have as good a standing, if not better, when we’re coming into state, and that’s always a positive thing. Host East vied for a sectional title this past weekend in a back-and-forth duel that ultimately ended with St. Charles North (241) edging the DeKalb/Sycamore co-op (236) and the Saints (226) at the Norris Center.

Sophomore Nick Boryk paced the Saints with individual titles in the 200- and 500yard freestyle while helping the 200 freestyle relay that also included freshman Mitch Milosch, Tarpey and sophomore John Cranfill to a runner-up finish.

A variation of that quartet also qualified for the 200 medley relay, with Milosch’s older brother, Nick, a junior, swimming with one group.

“They’re really fired up,” Cabel said. “It’s a great bunch of guys going.”

A handful of Saints competed at the 2014 state meet at Evanston for a team otherwise guided by senior Will Shanel, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Swimmer of the Year who now swims for NCAA Division II Truman in Kirksville, Missouri.

Tarpey was an alternate the last time the state meet was held at New Trier, in 2013.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva athletic officials eschewed rehanging the banners representing three outgoing Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division schools after some recent contest gym rearranging.

Incumbent Bartlett’s colors still fly, but the Hawks remain relevant within these walls for another reason this week.

The Bartlett girls basketball team has faced – and lost to – UEC River rivals Geneva and St. Charles East, who meet tonight for the Class 4A Geneva Sectional championship.

“Oh, yeah, there’s similarities,” Hawks junior guard Kaitlin Brohan said. “I

mean, Grace [Loberg of Geneva] and that other tall girl, [Kyra Washington] from East, they’re good players and can get things going.”

Washington was among several Saints who attended Geneva’s semifinal win against Bartlett on Tuesday, one night after East upset top-seeded Conant.

Geneva players sat together for the East-Conant game, as well.

Consider those appearances one last scouting cram session for two teams that know each others’ styles intimately.

That game changed venues because of Geneva’s duties as UEC wrestling tournament host, but the Saints looked equally comfortable in Ge-

neva’s larger, contest gym Tuesday. East accelerated its defensive intensity in the second half against Bartlett as a boisterous fan base soaked everything up.

“Hope it’s going to be bigger Thursday,” East senior point guard Katie Claussner said, “but it was awesome. It was great.”

As with Loberg in Tuesday’s 23-point, 14-rebound, six-block night, Claussner eventually became ubiquitous against Conant, finishing with 21 points.

“Not only is she lightning quick, but she’s under control when she does it,” Cougars coach Deirdre Naughton said.

“And she knows when to pass to her teammates, she knows

when to take the ball to the basket. She’s really, really under control for being so quick.”

Admittedly shaky in spots against Bartlett, the Vikings are confident they can regain top form against the Saints while relying on their own, home-grown crowd energy.

Grams, Harner recruit former Kaneland teammate for Waubonsee “Positive peer pressure.”

Growing up learning the supposed dangers of peer pressure in elementary school, it’s rarely referred to that way. But if there ever was an example of the healthy kind of peer pressure, it occurred around the start of the women’s basketball season at Waubonsee Community College.

Sarah Grams and Brooke Harner, a couple of former Kaneland Knights, saw their team in need of some bodies.

The roster was slim, so slim, in fact, the team played a few early games with just six players.

So they turned to someone they knew they could play with, someone they knew would strengthen the team from a depth and talent perspective. They turned to Ashley Prost, a former Kaneland teammate. And one of their best friends.

“At the beginning of the season, we had no tall girls. I was like the tallest girl, and I’m 5-foot-6,” Harner said.

“We were talking to Ashley, and we’re like, ‘Ashley, we need a big person. You played post in high school, you were awesome in high school. Our coach is great. We need you, you’ll be playing with me and Sarah, you’ll have fun.’ She’s

like, ‘Well, I’ll try.’ And she ended up loving it.”

“She was a little hesitant, but we knew she would be a great asset to the team, she’d play, she’d help us a lot. And Ashley’s a great ballplayer, so we were just trying to give her some positive peer pressure to come join us because we knew she’d love it,” Grams added. “We’re really thankful that she did, and it’s been a lot of fun having her on the team.”

Prost was wrapping up a season of playing volleyball at Waubonsee and wasn’t expecting to be starting a new season in a different sport. But she shined in high school, and so in her sophomore year of college she agreed to return to basketball.

Prost said it was a last-minute decision to reteam with Grams and Harner but one she couldn’t be happier to have made.

“It’s the best feeling ever just because when basketball ended in high school – they were my best friends, and it was really sad for us to be done,” Prost said. “And then last year when those two were playing together, I kind of missed it. I would go to all their games and stuff.

“I love the sport. I always think that when it’s done, I’ll be done,” Prost said. “But I kind of find a way of getting back to it, I guess.”

Regardless of whether or not these three hit the court again once this year’s playoff run is over with their Waubonsee teammates, playing one more time alongside best friends has been a fantastic experience for all three Kaneland grads.

“It’s been awesome,” Grams said. “We’ve been playing together since sixth grade, we’ve been on the same travel team. It feels like it’s been forever. I love it. They’re two of my closest friends. It’s been real just playing with them again. It’s going to be weird not playing with them next year.”

‘Talk therapy’ can help overcome a phobia Dear Doctor K: I have a terrible fear of heights, dogs and public speaking. My sister calls them phobias and says I should seek help. How do I know if my fears are normal, or if I need treatment?

Dear Reader: We all have things we worry about or are afraid of.

And with most of them, we’re right to be fearful. But in people with a phobia, the fear is persistent, excessive and unrealistic.

As many as one in 10 people suffer from phobias at some time during their lives.

How can you distinguish a justifiable fear from a phobia? In a phobia: • There are fears that are irrational, given the reality of the situation. For example, anyone may be afraid of an unrestrained, menacing dog. But most people do not run away from a calm, quiet animal on a leash. People with dog phobias avoid all dogs.

• There is avoidance of triggers. People with phobias may go to great lengths to avoid the things that trigger their phobia.

For example, they may walk up 10 flights of stairs to avoid using an elevator.

• There are anxiety-related physical symptoms. These can include tremors, palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness and nausea.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve put a chart that lists many different phobias. They range from fear of snakes to fear of heights and public places.

Why do people get phobias? A vulnerability to getting phobias can run in families. A child of a parent with a specific type of phobia is more likely to have that same phobia than another child.

That could be due to genetic factors or to non-genetic factors.

Studies indicate that both are involved, but that non-genetic factors are more important. For example, if a parent has a fear of heights, a child may be more likely to develop the same phobia if the child witnesses the parent being terrified when near the top of a tall building.

Phobias are a type of anxiety disorder. A mental health professional is best qualified to diagnose them. Tell him or her about any experience or trauma that may have set off the phobia.

For example, maybe a dog attack led to your fear of dogs. Discuss how you react – your thoughts, feelings and physical symptoms – when you are confronted with

the thing you fear. Also, describe what you do to avoid fearful situations. How does the phobia affect your daily life, including your job and personal relationships?

Specific phobias are the most common. This is a fear of particular animals (dogs), people (clowns), environments (thunderstorms) or situations (riding in airplanes, getting into elevators).

A combination of medication and “talk therapy” can help. For short-term treatment of phobias, your doctor may prescribe an anti-anxiety medication.

The most commonly used talk therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), especially a technique called desensitization therapy or exposure therapy.

Exposure therapy involves gradually increasing your exposure to the thing you fear. This is done at your own pace, under controlled circumstances. As you are exposed to the thing you fear, you master your fear through anxiety-reducing strategies.

Phobias can greatly interfere with a person’s life. But with proper treatment, they can be conquered.

Maybe grandma should move Dr. Wallace: My parents were divorced when I was 10. They both remarried, and I lived with my mother and stepfather. But last year my mother and father divorced their spouses and are planning to marry each other for the second time. I’m thrilled because I love both of them very much and soon we will be a family again.

One problem exists – my grandmother, Mom’s mom, who lives with my mother and me. She dislikes my father and is trying to convince my mother not to remarry him. I believe it was my grandmother who instigated their divorce in the first place. I’ve talked to my mom who said not to pay any attention to my grandmother and that she and my father are going to be married soon.

I’m afraid when they do get married my grandmother will start trouble again. I don’t want that to happen.

At the bridge table, you might have to change your game, in particular when the bidding helps you to place the missing key-cards.

That is not relevant in this deal, but how should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads the spade queen?

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, three hearts, one diamond and one club. He needs to take two more diamond tricks to get up to nine – how?

This is not a finessing deal. If one of declarer’s diamond honors is captured (or covered) by the king, he will need the suit to split 3-3, which is unlikely (a priori 35.53 percent). Instead, South should lead twice toward the hand with the two honors. He should win the first trick with dummy’s spade king and call for a low diamond. East will presumably play low, so South will win with his queen. He goes back to the board by leading his low heart to dummy’s jack. Then he plays a second low diamond toward his hand.

Suppose East wins with his king and returns his second spade.

Declarer wins with his ace, cashes his diamond jack, overtakes his heart queen with dummy’s king, cashes the diamond ace and claims.

Lastly, note that it could cost to duck the first trick. If West is a genius, he will shift to the club queen. Then South would lose one spade, one diamond and three clubs.

Q: Other than real or laminate wood, what is popular for kitchen flooring? I just don’t like the look of wood, plus I have it everywhere else in my house already (albeit under area rugs).

Case: Wood is most popular, but we are also seeing a lot of tile and cork.

Q: My parents want to age in place. What are some universal design practices we can consider?

What are you seeing regarding universal design?

Case: Universal design is an important consideration when remodeling your home. We generally recommend grab bars, roll in showers, benches, hand-held shower heads, wider aisles in kitchens and sections of lowered countertops.

Q: I have had a king mattress and box spring on the floor for a year because I can’t find a king bed I like! I love modern, spare canopy styles, which look great up to a queen size but often look positively unwieldy in a king. Do you think the upholstered headboard style is here to stay? I can’t seem to find anything else that is clean-lined but pretty, and doesn’t look huge. Any bed sources would be appreciated, too.

Q: Have you remodeled your own home, and – if so – what are some of the biggest takeaways?

Case: Yes, I have recently remodeled my kitchen and several bathrooms.

My biggest recommendation is to work with a company that has an established, proven process. You’re inviting this company into your lives and your home, and you want to trust that they’ll take care of it like it’s their own.

Q: I plan to update a 1980 three-story brick townhouse with hardwood flooring, including the kitchen (currently tile) and bedrooms. I also plan to replace the rough black slate in the entrance and hallway with hardwood. Do you agree going with “all hardwood”?

Case: Generally, using one material throughout a space makes it feel larger and the design more cohesive.

Q: I love the look of porcelain tiles, especially those that look like wood. What do you think about porcelain? Can it go anywhere in the house or should it stay in the kitchen or bath?

vation, and one of the projects is a complete redo of my kitchen. I am determined to install a softer floor than I have now, which is slate. I own a bungalow and plan to keep that aesthetic. I would do wood but I have wood floors throughout and really think I want cherry cabinets.

Would wood floors be too much wood? My kitchen is galley-shaped, although relatively long, and I plan on soapstone or a black matte granite or even Aqua Grantique (a dark granite gneiss that looks like soapstone) counters.

Case: Wood floors with stained cabinets is a great combination. You want to be careful when selecting the species and stain of each, so that they complement one another.

For example, light floors and dark cabinets is a safe way to go and creates contrast.

Q: We’re considering a remodeling project and thinking about adding on to our home. We’d prefer to stay put and not move, but the remodeling process seems daunting. What advice can you offer for getting started?

Case: Adding space is a great way to make the home you love meet your current needs.

However, to most homeowners it can be an overwhelming process. The best way to get started is to look for

Case: Porcelain wood planks are very popular. They’re a good choice for any room in your house, but you may want to consider installing a heated floor to add comfort.

Q: I want to remodel my kitchen but don’t want to be too trendy; I want the design to last years. What advice can you give when selecting kitchen finishes?

Case: Painted cabinets are timeless, as is a white/gray color palette.

My previous comment about installing a bathroom floor (traditional material in a modern pattern) could also apply to your backsplash.

Plumbing fixtures and hardware are easily changed, so these are great places to let your personality shine through in your kitchen design.

Q: Can you recommend flooring for a small shower floor? We had river rocks but we had a leak and have to have the floor replaced.

We are looking for something that looks good but doesn’t require a lot of maintenance.

Case: They come in a wide range of patterns, sizes and textures, so it’s easy to find something you’ll love.

Be sure that your contractor installs a waterproofing membrane under the floor tile and extends it up the wall several inches to make sure you don’t have another leak.
