Customers, co-workers rally for Colonial Café employee

ST. CHARLES – Peggy Fodge has been a server at Colonial Café and Ice Cream the last 20 years.

The DeKalb resident is a Colonial staple and longtime favorite of many customers, providing “traditional perfect service,” according to one patron.

“She’s the best; she’s irreplaceable,” said Rick Rittgarn, director of operations at Colonial, who has worked with Fodge the past two decades. “Peggy does the little things, the special things … . At Christmas, she makes fudge at home and brings it in for her customers. She gets really involved with whatever [fundraising] initiative Colonial has – she’s always the leader of the pack with the most donations.”

But, recently, one of Colonial’s most requested servers has been the one in need of support. And her old customers have flocked to her aid.

Just before Thanksgiving, Fodge – who works at the Colonial on Randall Road in St. Charles and used to work at a former location on Route 38 in Geneva – was diagnosed with an advanced stage of tongue cancer. In early December, she underwent a 101⁄2 surgery during which surgeons removed three-quarters of her tongue and the lymph nodes in her neck.

She also went through radiation and chemotherapy, and she’s slated for further treatment in the future.

“Even though she hasn’t been there in a couple of months, everyone is just praying and supporting her, and that’s what keeps her strong; that’s what keeps our family strong,” said Katie Irmen, one of Fodge’s three adult children, who also works at Colonial. “I always say, ‘I ran into so and so; they were thinking about you,’ and she gets emotional. She misses her customers. She says, ‘I wish I could see them; I miss them all the time.’”

After learning of Fodge’s illness, Rittgarn immediately thought of the medical expenses that would quickly pile up. His youngest son, Aaron, was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 12, and though today – at age 21 – Aaron is healthy, Rittgarn said he remembers what it was like facing those bills. So he had his middle son, Erik – a Colonial employee – and Irmen set up a GoFundMe page to provide an avenue for Fodge’s friends, co-workers and customers to help offset her medical costs and receive updates on her health.

What’s more, nearly 500 patrons visited Colonial on Feb. 17 as part of a Colonial Cares Fundraising Night in Fodge’s

honor. The restaurant donated 15 percent of each customer’s bill to Fodge’s cause, and – at the end of the night – nearly $700 was raised.

“It was so great to hear everybody talking about Mom … ,” Irmen said. “People who couldn’t make it sent cards to her or wrote messages to her.”

Fodge couldn’t attend the event, but she did video-chat with several people, and Irmen said the night was a huge morale booster for her.

Later, Fodge shared via email how she felt about the outpouring of support.

“I can’t begin to tell you how amazing it feels to be so supported and cared for by my co-workers, friends and family,” she wrote. “All of these people share a special place in my heart and mean more to me then they may ever know. I know that God has placed them all in my life, and for that I am extremely thankful. I couldn’t do this on my own.”

Celebrating Sherlock Holmes in reading Greetings! I’m Michele Martzel, promotional services manager for the Batavia Public Library, and I’m delighted to be sharing news of library events, programs and services in this column on the fourth Thursday of every month.

Right now, the library is in the midst of its 2016 One Book, One Batavia celebration. What is One Book, One Batavia?

One Book, One Batavia is a community-read program presented annually during February and March.

Established in 2003, the program follows in the footsteps of Seattle Reads, the granddaddy of community-read programs launched in 1998; and One Book, One Chicago, launched in 2001.

During the One Book, One Batavia celebration, the library invites Batavia readers to read the same book and participate in library-sponsored programs – including author visits, book discussions, musical performances, lectures and first-person portrayals – related to that book.

In One Book, One Batavia’s 14year history, a variety of fiction and nonfiction titles have been celebrated. The 2016 selection is “The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

“Mystery is one of the most popular genres,” said Stacey Peterson, adult services manager at the library. “Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories featuring Sherlock Holmes have been popular since he was first introduced in 1887. Generations have been enjoying Sherlock Holmes adventures in books and on screen for decades.”

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, the library will present “Footprint of the Hound: Exploring the World of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Baskerville Legend.”

The guest speaker will be Timothy Johnson, curator of special collections and rare books and the E. W. McDiarmid curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

The university has the largest collection of Sherlock Holmes materials in the world.

Michael Morkert, who runs Java Plus, said he intends for the business to have a new home and is considering other places in Sugar Grove and North Aurora. Shannon Halikias, the director of Sugar Grove’s library, said she hopes a new coffee shop eventually will open at the library, which is located at 125 S. Municipal Drive in Sugar Grove.

Morkert said he has enjoyed having Java Plus at the library “immensely.”

He said his goal is for a new location to open by June 1.

“In order for Java Plus to grow, and we’ve grown a lot, we need to find a place that’s a little more open for our growth needs,” he said, adding “the library just can’t meet those needs.”

For instance, Morkert said he would like the shop to be open on Fridays.

adding “It wasn’t only about restrictions. … It’s also that Java Plus wants an autonomy they don’t have when they are tied into an institution. …

They want more events.”

Morkert said Friday “would be a huge day for us.”

“I think the time is just right that we try to find a little bit of a bigger

place that’s independent from anything else,” he said.

Java Plus in recent months had expanded its coffee and tea selections and also launched a tea club. It also serves sandwiches and pastries.

Morkert noted that he also operates a mobile coffee shop with the same name, and that will start running in March.

He noted it has an unusual website address – www.javaplus.coffee. He said he’s confident that his customers will continue to come to Java Plus when it opens at a new location.

“We’ve made some great friendships here,” he said. “It’s kind of bittersweet.”

Halikias said “a coffee shop is of great benefit to our patrons,” and she is hoping another small-business owner would be a good fit for the library space.

She said rent is low and “the library is, in essence, supporting the coffee shop. … It’s a great opportunity.”

Geneva library nears purchase of Sixth Street School property

The Kane County and Geneva Public Library boards set the sale of the

county-owned property in motion when they entered into a real estate contract in January 2015. The library seeks to buy the property from the county.

Since last winter, the former school at 210 S. Sixth St. in Geneva has been demolished despite encouragement from the Illinois Historic Preservation

Agency to consider alternatives.

The agency asserted that the structure, which was built in 1924 and 1925, was eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The building’s occupant, the Kane County Regional Office of Education, relocated to 28 N. First St., also in Geneva.

Hitting the books at STC Underground

editorial@kcchronicle.com Studying for a test, working on homework, preparing for a project – these can be solitary pursuits, a lonely navigation of searching for the right answers, working out the best strategy, deciding where to start. It helps to have a friend to bounce ideas off, a mentor to suggest the right direction, a group to pool resources.

All of these things and more are available to members of STC Underground in St. Charles who take advantage of the teen center’s twice-monthly study nights. Offering a quiet place to complete assignments, to collaborate on a project or to just quietly catch up on reading, STC Underground has been a popular haven for students ages 11 to 19 since 2009.

“Seven years and we’re still going strong,” said Darby Beasley, teen program and center director. “That fact alone speaks to the strength of the program.”

Both newcomers and veteran STC Underground members look forward to study nights, Beasley said.

“As the kids are leaving, the last words out of their mouths will be wondering when the next one is scheduled,” she said.

And what’s not to look forward to? With nine computers – both Macs and PCs – available for use, students are able to do research, check their school’s portal for assignments and access creative music and art design software that can make their projects shine.

Open to STC Underground members at 6 p.m. on scheduled Tuesdays twice a month, study nights afford students an hour to focus on schoolwork. Underground staff turn the center over to students – no yelling, just quiet conversations.

No video games, just computer research. No dodgeball, just dedicated study. They can work with their peers, ask questions about what’s happening in their classes and brainstorm about group assignments.

“It’s a great time and place for kids to feel comfortable talking about school and class work,” Beasley said.

“It’s a time for them to collaborate with classmates, and – if they have trouble working on something – the

Richard J. Stern, age 60, formerly of Rockford, died of an unexpected illness on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, with his family by his side.

Dick was born in St. Charles, on July 31, 1955, to his parents, Richard H. and June C. (Olson) Stern. He married his loving wife, Patricia, in St. Charles at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Dec. 11, 1982, before they moved to Belvidere in 1986, to raise their family. Patricia predeceased Dick in 2009.

Dick moved to Knoxville to continue his work as a tool and die maker, for Vinylex. It was there that Dick found a renewed love for riding his Harley-Davidson though the hills of

Tennessee. He loved his Chicago Bears, University of Tennessee football, and he could be best described as a gentle giant. A man of few words, but when they were spoken, they were meaningful.

Recently, Dick was engaged to be married to his friend, loving fiancée, and hiking companion, Maggie Hickman. His time on earth was a blessing to us all, and we will miss him dearly.

Dick is survived by his two sons, Thomas (Allison) Stern and Timothy (Jenna) Stern; fiancée, Maggie Hickman; mother, June (Robert) Stern; siblings, Laura (Mark) Graf, John Stern, Kristin Sparks; grandchildren, Tricia and Liam Richard Stern; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dick is predeceased by his dad, Richard H. Stern; wife, Patricia Stern; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

“I think a lot more needs to be done,” Tiballi said.

If elected, Tiballi said he would seek no more than a second term and would perform a top-to-bottom evaluation of the office.

Tiballi noted he is proud to have the endorsement of County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen.

Russell said county residents would get an “independent officeholder” if he is re-elected.

“I am not beholden to anybody,” he said.

The winner of the GOP race will face either Tom Martinez or John Shoemaker in the general election.

Elgin police tests body cameras SPONSORED BY

City of Elgin police officers are testing body cameras, an initiative funded in part through a federal grant administered by the Bureau of Justice Administration. The cameras are used to record police interactions with the public and to gather video evidence.

They also help maintain accountability for both officers and citizens.

Elgin Police Commander Ana Lalley said the department currently has 10 police officers testing various camera models. Depending on the make and model, the cameras can attach to a lapel, glasses, or on the center of the chest. In addition to collecting information and recording interactions, research shows that body cameras can help reduce the amount of time officers spend on paperwork.

“We’re testing various models for their durability and field of view,” Commander Lalley said. “The cameras must have at least 10 hours of battery life and the ability to roll back 30-seconds of video from the time

an officer initiates the official recording.” The footage that is captured will be subject to Freedom of Information Act requests, which has the police coordinating with the city’s legal department to address privacy and other concerns.

The federal grant will provide matching funds of up to $250,000, the commander said. Elgin was awarded the grant in October and plans to continue the pilot program into the summer. Once the type of camera is selected, the department will purchase approximately 100 body cameras and provide them to Elgin officers who serve on patrol and in other specialty units.

Police in Illinois are not required to wear body cameras, but legislation passed in 2015 set guidelines on how they should be worn, when they should be turned on, and how long video should be retained.

Voters next month will decide whether to give Kane County Coroner Rob Russell a shot at another term or to let his challenger, Dr. Bob Tiballi, advance his campaign to November.

The March 15 Republican primary election will be the second matchup between Russell and Tiballi, who faced each other in the 2012 GOP primary race for coroner.

Russell inherited the office from Chuck West, who had been charged with official misconduct and died before the case went to trial.

Russell said he discovered a “huge Pandora’s box of problems” but addressed such immediate issues as payroll, unclaimed cremated Rob Russell remains and autopsies.

“I want to continue on with these accomplishments,” he said.

Frasz, MacRunnels clash in Kane County Board race

There is no candidate listed in the race from the Democratic Party. MacRunnels ran for the Kane County Board chairman position in 2008. He lost to Karen McConnaughay in the primary.

“I’m in it for the right reasons,” Frasz said, adding that his attendance at meetings is high and said he had “an eight-year, unblemished record.” He talked about being endorsed by Blackberry Township and Elburn officials, as well as state leaders from the area.

MacRunnels said Jim MacRunnels some of the projects county officials have worked out, including those involving the forest preserve, have been costly. He criticized the raises that Kane County Board members awarded to

department heads. He said that property taxes are too high. He criticized county officials on plans to spend millions on a cross country course at Settler’s Hill when, he said, there are so many needs not being met.

MacRunnels said Kane County leaders’ work to freeze the property tax has not been effective.

“The people obviously know that their property tax bills are continuing to go up,” MacRunnels said, adding, “the freeze is a moot point.”

He also said he was not impressed that Frasz was able to get endorsements.

“The only endorsement I’m looking for is that of the voters,” MacRunnels said. “Politicians endorsing politicians? Really?”

Frasz spoke on the issue of the raises for Kane County officials. He said opposing the raises “might make for a good sound bite,” but said the reasoning is not sound. He said the county is in good shape because of the work done by those who received the raises.

The representative from District 18 represents Mill Creek, which is near Geneva. Frasz said that with about 4,500 residents, “it is the largest unincorporated community in our county.” Frasz said he is involved with the

Mill Creek special service area advisory board and attends meetings.

“My opponent has never been to an SSA meeting, ever,” Frasz said. “Who do you want in that position? Someone who has never been to a meeting and doesn’t understand how it works?”

MacRunnels acknowledged he never had been to an SSA meeting, but he pointed to his work with Special Olympics and said of Frasz, “he hasn’t been to a Special Olympics meeting. I won’t hold that against him.”

MacRunnels also brought up the issue of term limits, noting that Frasz will be completing his second term.

“I don’t think it’s an issue for somebody who has been on the board only two terms,” Frasz said, adding that “the voters are the ultimate term limit. … We have many, many board members who have served 12, 16 and 20 years, and they are a huge value.”

MacRunnels said that “you have got to be brave enough to stand up and say I respect term limits, two terms maximum.”

The Kane County Finance and Budget Committee on Wednesday unanimously supported a more comprehensive procurement card policy that addresses such areas as responsibility, restrictions, limits and internal controls.

The County Board is expected to consider the item March 8.

Discussions about the county’s credit cards – or procurement cards, as they are also known – began last fall

when Coroner Rob Russell used his P-card to avoid the standard approval process for promotional items.

Committee member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, thanked those involved with drafting the new policy, which spans four pages. She said loopholes were identified.

“We came out and addressed it head-on,” said committee member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park.

Auditor Terry Hunt has said P-cards provide another way for the county to buy items already budgeted. Sometimes, he has said, they are the only payment option available or can let departments make purchases online that would be more expensive

through other means.

The proposed policy acknowledges that, describing the credit cards as an “essential tool.”

“At the same time the county recognizes procurement cards may increase the possibility of unauthorized purchases or payments,” the proposed policy states. “Therefore it is the intent of the county to minimize this risk by limiting the number of procurement cards issued to each office and department or group of departments to the

fewest number as is practical and by setting individual and monthly transaction limits for each card to the lowest levels that reasonably accommodate the procurement needs.”

Under the proposed policy, elected officials and department heads would determine the number of P-cards and transaction limits for their office or department.

The Kane County Board standing committees would provide advice and consent.

The insidious eye disease known as glaucoma has widely been referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because it strikes without warning and is the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness. It takes a professional eye exam to catch this “thief.” Diagnosis of glaucoma is made on the basis of three primary factors: an increase in intraocular pressure, the pressure within the eyeball; characteristic changes in the visual field, specifically a loss of peripheral (side) vision; and signs of damage to the optic nerve. Once the diagnosis is made, it is possible to manage the disease with medication and/ or surgery. Without a diagnosis, those with glaucoma may lose their vision before they ever know that there is a problem.

NORTH AURORA – North Aurora is offering a basic emergency response class for village residents, which will be taught by members of the police and fire departments.

The Community Emergency Response Team – CERT – Basic Training course will help families be prepared for a disaster, how to better cope with the aftermath of a disaster.

The course provides an overview of disaster preparation, with both classroom and hands-on practical exercises, culminating in a simulation where participants respond to a disaster while role-playing as victims. Classes are from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays in the police department training room, 200 S. Lincolnway St., North Aurora.

• April 5 – disaster fire suppression.

• April 12 – disaster medical operations.

• April 19 – disaster medical operations continued.

• April 26 – light search and rescue operations.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older, or 16 or older with parent permission. Preference for admission will be given to those who live or work in North Aurora.

Attendees who successfully complete the course may apply to volunteer in the village’s CERT program. Volunteers assist first responders during disasters and other emergencies or during planned events, such as North Aurora Days or the community parade.

Volunteers may help with directing traffic, perimeter/access control, triage/first aid, light search and rescue and shelter setup and operation, but there is no obligation to volunteer.

Batavia could walk back requirement New sidewalks would not be mandatory in some situations under proposal

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Developers would no longer be responsible for installing sidewalks in areas of Batavia that are not within close proximity of schools, parks, bus routes and existing sidewalks under a plan approved by city aldermen on Tuesday.

The Batavia City Council’s Committee of the Whole voted to waive the requirement – or the potential liabil-

ity to contribute money for sidewalk construction elsewhere – on a 7-4 vote.

Areas within the city limits or planning jurisdiction are largely built-out, meaning that the focus of residential development is turning to smaller infill projects, often just a single home.

Currently, sidewalks are required for all such infill projects, in keeping with the city’s stated policy of creating a pedestrian-friendly environment.

The city staff had proposed waiv-

ing the construction requirement in such instances, but would have required developers to contribute to a sidewalk fund.

Under the plan approved by the committee, a full waiver of sidewalk costs would be given for projects more than 1,000 feet from schools, parks or bus routes, and more than 500 feet from an existing sidewalk.

Voting in favor of the option were 1st Ward Alderman Carl Fischer, 2nd Ward Alderman Martin Callahan, 3rd

Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann, 5th Ward Alderman Kevin Botterman, 6th Ward Alderman Nicholas Cerone, 6th Ward Alderman Michael Russotto and 7th Ward Alderman Drew McFadden.

The proposal now moves to the full council for final approval.

The Barbie I wish I knew My parents always told me I BEFORE THE played with Barbies strangely DIPLOMA as a kid. Apparently my Barbies were always half-naked, Denise Cartina and I used to oddly touch their heads while playing with them.

I can explain.

My Barbies were occasionally half-clothed because I didn’t have enough clothes for them all, and – honestly – I cared more about the storyline I was creating with the dolls rather than what skirt they wore. Likewise, I would touch my Barbies heads while I played with them because this indicated to my dolls that they were talking to one another. This all made sense in my head.

I’m sure plenty of you have heard about the new Barbies out this year. The toy company Mattel has released three new Barbie body types: petite, curvy and tall (along with the original Barbie size). The new releases include seven new skin tones and 24 new unique hairstyles. No longer will certain girls feel isolated not having a Barbie that resembles them.

What a brilliant idea for Mattel to create a wide range of Barbies that look similar to the appearances of different girls.

Personally, I did not need a Barbie that perfectly resembled me as a child in order to play with the dolls. I was content with the Barbies I had, even if they did not exactly look like me. Being so young, I think I realized that Barbies were merely dolls; they did not exactly have to look like a typical woman.

Since Barbies first arrival, the dolls have received both positive and negative reviews from individuals. Yes, children love to dream up elaborate stories with Barbie dolls and style their outfits, but some people question whether Barbie is actually destroying young girls’ idea of what they are supposed to strive to look like. After all, I did not grow up to look like the faultless Barbie she was, with a tiny toned waist; long legs; and silky, straight, blond hair. I was not that Barbie.

Though, there is no reason to fret anymore since the new Barbie dolls have arrived. They have come to rescue all the girls out there who never felt worthy of their body because they were not Barbie-perfect. If these new dolls can somehow keep just one girl from skipping a meal, save one girl from hating her hair and every stretch-mark and freckle on her body, then I think the new Barbies have won. These Barbies can encourage girls to believe there is no one ideal body image that one should strive toward. Girls can feel secure seeing a variety of woman’s body types. I wish I would have been more aware of this a decade ago.

I don’t have a clue if girls nowadays still play with Barbies, but I envy any who get to play with these new dolls. My 9-year-old self would have been electrified with enthusiasm knowing that Barbies were getting updated body types, skin colors and hair types. I would have begged my mother to buy me a curvy Barbie with wavy dark-brown hair and brown eyes. That is my Barbie. I wish I could have gotten to know that Barbie.

Liberal economists correct Sanders’ fuzzy math

Bernie Sanders is something new: a Democratic candidate who is not pretending to represent the party of fiscal responsibility and balanced budgets. That’s always been a pretty big bluff anyway. When other Democrats made that claim, it rested entirely on the boom years of the Clinton administration, which brought the only budget surplus since 1969. But Sanders has dropped the act.

His budget plans are full of the sorts of frankly unbelievable numbers that would make a con man blush: massive projected cuts in health care costs, a sudden doubling of the growth rates of GDP and productivity, enormous revenue forecast from small and easily avoidable taxes. Sanders is easily competitive with Donald Trump for “Most Imaginary Numbers in a Policy Platform” and “Most Politically Unrealistic Claims About What His Administration Will Achieve.”

But while the wonks in the right hemisphere of the political world have mostly been standing around gaping, too aghast at their party’s outliers to even know what to say, their counterparts on the left have struck back. a scathing open letter about the Sanders fairy-tale promises, in which they lamented that this would undermine their efforts to make the Democrats the party of evidence-based policy.

Needless to say, I applaud their efforts, and wish some Republican economists would unleash comparable opprobrium on the absurd promises that Republicans are making about growing the economy through the magic of supply-side tax cuts.

The idea of Democrats as center-left technocrats, less interested in ideology than in whether the numbers add up, came in with the Clintons. Even if Hillary Clinton beats back Sanders and takes the presidency, it will probably be the last we see of that pragmatism.

The younger generation of Democrats, the future of the party, isn’t looking to be told that they can do 4.726 percent better under a Democrat than under a Republican.

They’re looking for the kind of transformational change that Sanders promises.

And they’re bound to be impatient with wonks who demand that they provide a detailed analysis of a future that doesn’t yet exist outside of their dreams.

RISK PAYS OFF Actor/comedian Chris Witaske moves from St. Charles to Los Angeles

wo years ago, Chris Witaske took a chance.

After working at comedy venues such as Second City for a number of years, he decided to pack up his life in St. Charles and move to Los Angeles.

His risk was worth the reward.

Witaske was cast in the Netflix original series “Love,” which was released Feb. 19 and is directed by the highly-recognized Judd Apatow.

Witaske, 32, also hosts his own monthly live interview show called “So You Do Comedy?” at the UCB Theatre in Los Angeles. However, his primary focus over the last year has been on “Love.”

After going through three separate auditions for the show – and waiting to hear back – Witaske was finally given a part in the series. He appears in several episodes during the first season and plays the best friend of a main character, Gus. Easily enough, his character was given the name Chris.

Throughout his years in comedy – from seeing his first show at Second City when he was 13 years old, graduating from St. Charles High School and eventually moving to Hollywood – this is the moment Witaske has dreamed about.

He caught up with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey to talk about “Love” and what it means for him to have that opportunity.

Chris Casey: Talk about the risk it took to just pack up your life and move to Los Angeles.

Chris Witaske: It was definitely taking a big chance. I mean, I had an agent and manager, but nothing else planned, really. It really was just a big leap of faith and pretty much starting my life all over again. No one in Hollywood knows what Second City is or anything like that, so it was a big risk.

Casey: How did you get the opportunity to be cast in “Love”?

Witaske: So, I got called and was told I had an audition for the show. I went in, auditioned, but didn’t hear anything back for two weeks, so I figured I didn’t get it. I got a call for a different part, went in and – same thing – didn’t hear anything for a couple weeks. Finally got a call for a third part, waited and waited and thought maybe this just isn’t meant to be. Finally, they told me, “Chris, you’re not right for any of the parts, so we’re just going to write a part for you.”

It was kind of cool that they wanted me on the show and made me a character.

Casey: Judd Apatow directs this show. That’s a pretty big deal, huh?

Witaske: It really doesn’t get any bigger than that. It was intimidating at first, for sure. The first table read we had, where the whole cast is sitting at a table, Judd walks in and could have sat anywhere and sits directly across from me. That was my first big, crazy moment. But it turns out, he’s a really cool, down-to-earth guy who is a big fan of comedy. One thing he allowed us to do is improvise. I feel like working at Second

City and various places, that’s one of my biggest skills. Yeah, we read off the script, but we got to improvise certain situations, which was awesome.

Casey: What is the show about?

Witaske: The show is an honest look at modern love. It follows the two main characters, Gus and Mickey, and plays out really slow. It’s meant to show what an actual relationship looks like from start to finish. The main characters don’t even meet until the end of the first episode. But it pretty much follows them in a relationship, how it builds and what

not. I play Gus’ best friend.

Casey: From where you were living in St. Charles to where you are now, what does it mean to you?

Witaske: Well, St. Charles means a lot to me. My parents, Ray and Peggy, both still live in St. Charles, and I can honestly say I’m really proud to be from there.

I just am very thankful because I really felt supported, as far as getting into this career. I had great teachers and a great community of support, and it means so much. I may live in L.A., but Illinois is definitely where my roots are.

Saints make statement

Strong defensive effort, unselfish play lead East

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If anyone thought Wednesday night’s boys basketball game between Batavia and St. Charles East didn’t mean anything, ask the Saints.

Despite a slow start to the game, the Saints picked up intensity on both sides of the floor in the second half to come back and beat the Bulldogs, 50-40, in both teams’ regular season finales.

The game had no effect on the Upstate Eight Conference River Division standings as Batavia had clinched the outright title with the Saints’ loss to Larkin last week.

“We felt we had something to prove,” East senior point guard James McQuillan said. “We wanted to make a statement tonight. We weren’t always playing at the level we wanted to all season, and winning tonight showed on any given day that we can be the best in conference. Tonight was a big win for us.”

McQuillan (11 points) was one of three Saints in double figures, joining junior Zach Mitchell (12) and fellow senior Zach Hondlik (11).

With the senior night celebration under way before tipoff, it seemed evident that East (14-12, 8-4 UEC River) had trouble developing a rhythm early, seeing a deficit as big as nine points after a free throw by Batavia’s Kamontez Thomas with 1:03 on the first-half clock. Thomas led Batavia with 10 points.

Mitchell hit one of his three 3-pointers before halftime to narrow the gap to 24-18 heading into the locker room.

“I just think we had a tough time getting rhythm early,” East coach Pat Woods said. “We rotated nine guys in the game in the first four minutes and got ourselves a bit out of sync. The second half, we did a much better job in most aspects of the game.”

East senior J.T. Ford made his only two shots of the game in the third quarter – both 3-pointers – the latter of which gave the Saints a 28-27 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter.

The game was tied once after Ford’s 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs (1910, 10-2) never pulled back ahead after that shot.

third and fourth quarters while limiting standout guard Canaan Coffey and Batavia to 16 in the entire second half.

Another East senior, Evan DiLeonardi, had the job of shutting down Coffey – who scored just six points on 2-for-10 shooting – as the Saints threw a couple of different defenses at the Bulldogs’ leading scorer.

“We’ve known and played against each other since we were little kids,”

DiLeonardi said. “I know what he’s good at, what he likes to do and stuff like that. We tried to give him different looks to help our defense on him and I think it worked since he only had six points.”

What was more concerning than the 16 total second-half points to Batavia coach Jim Nazos were the decisions made with the basketball.

Although the two could go hand-inhand, Nazos said his team had more shots blocked from the perimeter Wednesday night than he thinks he’s seen all season.

With the IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional that features the Bulldogs, East, Geneva and St. Charles North beginning Monday, Nazos knows his team has some work to do if it wants to play past the regional round.

“For whatever reason, and we haven’t done it all year, we made bad decisions with shots,” Nazos said. “East defended us really well, they made

things difficult for us, but we weren’t making those kinds of decisions early in the year and it’s a little frustrating.

“I’ve said it all along, East is a very good team. They kept their composure in that third quarter and made plays when they had to. They’re playing at a very high level right now.”

There’s a chance the two could meet in next week’s regional championship.

East will take on Streamwood in a quarterfinal game to get a shot at Geneva. East split with the Vikings this season. The winner of that semifinal will take on Batavia or the winner of the other quarterfinal between St. Charles North and Bartlett.

Though conference records are thrown out the door with the regular season completed, as DiLeonardi said with a laugh after Wednesday night’s game, “next week is like our conference tournament.” With that being said, the postseason preparation has officially begun.

Citing family concerns, Masoncup steps down after 3 seasons

On most nights, however, he couldn’t take his mind off the numbers 7 and 9.

Those are the ages of Masoncup’s sons, Aaron and Ty, whose extracurricular futures are two primary reasons Masoncup stepped down as North coach after three seasons Monday. Although he will remain as coach of the North Stars’ girls and boys tennis teams, Masoncup seeks at least one season where he can spend the majority of his non-school hours with family.

“I don’t want to look back and have any regrets,” Masoncup said.

guided the North girls to winning seasons in each of his three campaigns.

The North Stars challenged Geneva throughout what proved to be his final game on the bench, a 50-41 loss to Geneva in the Class 4A Glenbard West Regional championship game on Feb. 18.

Masoncup plans to travel to today’s Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional championship game between Geneva and Montini to support North Stars senior guard Kyla Helsel, who will compete in the latest round of the IHSA ThreePoint Showdown before tipoff.”

“I think the program’s in a good spot,” Masoncup said. “We’ve had three straight winning seasons, and I know they will continue that. The girls really did most of the work. We were lucky to have three straight years of great kids.”

Masoncup knew what the likely answer would be had he stayed the coaching course on the high school level.

“Basketball has become a 10-month job,” Masoncup said. “It’s summer league, it’s summer camps, it’s fall open gyms. It’s lifting in the spring.

It’s just become a big deal. Tennis, it’s really you coach them during the tennis season, and then they go to their private coaches during the offseason.”

Masoncup preferred not to tell players of his decision on the heels of a season-ending loss, but still wanted to be quick with the news in deference to athletic director Dan Dolney and other school officials.

“I wanted Dan and the athletic department to have a head start in finding a replacement,” Masoncup said, “because there’s so much that goes into it.”

Geneva’s sustained run of girls basketball success doesn’t get old, especially for the players who have grown up with it.

Sophomore guard Stephanie Hart, set to start tonight when the second-seeded Vikings meet No. 1 Montini for the Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional championship, was in eighth grade when Geneva made its most recent state tournament trip, in the 2013-14 season.

“All of us came up to the games and it was insane,” Hart said. “Seeing them go to state was just awesome.

Watching them through that whole experience was crazy, and then now being able to go through some of it myself.”

The Vikings (25-4) give significant minutes to three sophomore guards.

In addition to Hart, there are Margaret Whitley and Maddy Yelle, who both have family ties to Geneva’s fourth-place finisher in the 2008-09 Class 4A state tournament.

Whitley is the younger sister of all-

time program leading scorer Taylor Whitley, a recent inductee to the Geneva Hall of Fame. Yelle is the cousin of two former Vikings guards, Kat and Myra Yelle.

That Vikings team, led by coach Gina Nolan, broke its huddles in a similar manner to these squads, coached by longtime Nolan assistant Sarah Meadows.

“We’ve really just been focusing – and our whole motto for the team – on ‘Team together,’ ” Hart said. “We’ve really been capitalizing on that and making sure that on offense we work together and play off each other’s advantages and everything like that.”

Of course, the Vikings don’t shirk their defensive responsibilities, either, whether in their vaunted fullcourt pressure or half-court sets.

Broncos await: Montini lined up another formidable schedule this season, which already promised to be a challenge given the Broncos’ jump to Class 4A. It’s an understatement to say the perennial contender has met the challenge. Montini enters tonight’s meeting with Geneva at 30-2 and has cruised in its first three postseason games, winning by 28, 62 and 32 points.

Everybody gets into act for Vikings Geneva spreads wealth in senior night romp

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva boys basketball team clinched a share of second place in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division Wednesday night with an entertaining 62-38 senior night win over Elgin.

Eight of the nine seniors scored in the contest that featured nine 3-pointers and four slam dunks by the Vikings.

Another highlight was Maroons senior Desmond Douglas scoring the 1,000th point of his varsity career in the second quarter.

“Between the threes and the dunks, it was a pretty good night,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “It was nice that we had the seniors contribute tonight. Kids that haven’t had as much play. It was good to see them get out there.”

Elgin took an early lead, scoring the game’s first seven points.

Back to back treys by Dom Navigato put Geneva ahead, 12-9, at the 2:49 mark of the first quarter. The junior guard led all scorers with 18 points, 13 in the first half.

The Vikings (22-6, 8-4 UEC River) led, 14-11, after the first quarter.

Elgin (17-12, 5-7) pulled within 20-18 on a Douglas layup with three minutes left in the half. Those were two of Douglas’ 14 points, but that was a close as the Maroons would get.

Bennett Fuzak, who also scored 14 points, drilled a trey from the right corner as the period ended to give the Vikings a 25-18 halftime lead.

The Vikings put the game away in the third quarter.

“We didn’t play that great of a defense in the second quarter. We told them at half time that we have to pick it up,” Ralston said. “We had a safe lead of seven points but we felt like our defensive emphasis was not there.

The kids really picked it up in the third quarter.”

“We got offensively stagnant in the second half, and that kind of hurt our defense,” Elgin coach Mike Sitter said.

After the game, Ralston presented Douglas with the game ball to commemorate his feat. Douglas is the 19th Elgin player to achieve that milestone.

“Coach Ralston was very gracious in giving Douglas the game ball and recognizing him after the game,” Sitter said.

Drew Klaus scored six points for the Vikings.

Keshawn Baldwin notched eight points for the Maroons.

Roster moves mean new faces for team

Unlike big-ticket politicians, junior hockey executives concede their teams’ contention in races by making trades, not statements.

A recent flurry of roster moves, including a trade of high-scoring Tanner Laczynski of Shorewood, captures the Steel’s thoughts on the club’s place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference standings.

That still hasn’t sapped the 19-194-3 Steel of their energy, though. The sixth-place team has won three of its five February games, with one defeat coming in overtime.

“We’ve pulled together really well, I think,” center Jake Jaremko said.

“We’ve got a lot of new guys coming in, but we have really good team chemistry, and everybody gets along with each other really well.”

Left wing Jack Gessert, acquired from Kenai River (Alaska) of the North American Hockey League in late December, can attest.

Although he had played 138 games with Kenai River since the beginning of the 2013-14 season, Gessert has enjoyed getting acclimated to his new teammates and surroundings after experiencing a junior hockey rite of passage.

“Absolutely, there’s always player movement, which stinks,” Gessert said. “But, yeah, definitely I think the core group of kids here has been awesome. It’s been good.”

Gessert, who at 21 is the team’s oldest player, reconnected with former Kenai River teammate Marc Johnstone, who is one of the Steel’s leaders.

“He’s my linemate and we have some good chemistry, and we really like playing together,” Gessert said.

That was quick: Karch Bachman’s teammates seemingly notice his speed wherever he goes.

Fitting, then, that he’ll return to face the Steel Friday night just threeplus weeks after being traded to the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) RoughRiders.

“He’s so fast. One of the fastest guys, probably, in the league,” Steel goaltender John Lethemon said. “One-on-one, he can just blow right past guys and he has a great shot. Great vision on the ice. Great guy on the (penalty kill) and he knows how to finish.”

Former Chicago Steel left winger Karch Bachman is set to return to Fox Valley Ice Arena on Friday as a member of the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) RoughRiders.

Homebodies The Steel have 15 home games remaining beginning with Friday’s visit from Cedar Rapids (Iowa). Twelve will be played at Fox Valley Ice Arena. in his first five games with Cedar Rapids. He had 11 goals and four assists in 24 games with the Steel after arriving from Green Bay in an early-season trade.

Naturally, it took him little time to reassert his standing as a highly coveted

prospect. The Florida Panthers, who hosted the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, selected him in the fifth round last year out of Indiana’s Culver Military Academy.

“I always tell everybody that the coolest experience to me was being drafted in that team’s hometown,” Bachman said. “Because when you walk out in the arena, instead of silence, you’re hearing everybody cheer for you. So that’s pretty cool.”

ST. CHARLES – On senior night, the St. Charles North boys basketball team defeated Larkin, 62-58, in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest.

North finished the season 5-7 in conference and will play Bartlett on Monday night in a IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional quarterfinal. The winner gets top-seeded Batavia on Tuesday.

Marmion boys basketball game canceled

AURORA – The Marmion boys basketball game scheduled for Wednesday night against Romeoville was canceled because of severe weather. The game will not be rescheduled.

The Cadets (12-15) will be back in action at the IHSA Class 3A Glenbard South Regional in a quarterfinal matchup with Montini at 7:30 p.m. Monday night. The Cadets won at Montini, 67-56, on Dec. 11. Host Glenbard South awaits the winner on Wednesday.

Kaneland product Beebe returning to alma mater

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland and NFL alumnus Don Beebe, who played in six Super Bowls in the 1990s as a wide receiver with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers, will be celebrated in an allschool assembly March 3 at Kaneland at 2:10 p.m.

Beebe will receive a commemorative golden anniversary football as part of the NFL’s recognition of the 50th Super Bowl this month. School officials will present Beebe and his family with the ball at the assembly before placing it on permanent display at Kaneland.

After the assembly, Beebe will sign autographs of his book, “Six Rings from Nowhere,” which will be available for purchase. The book costs $20, and Beebe will donate $6 of each purchase to Kaneland. Also in my opinion, there are a few doctors who have a great “bedside manner” but don’t practice the best medicine.

They order too many, or too few, diagnostic tests. They use the newest treatments when older treatments would be equally effective, less expensive and possibly safer. I say older drugs are safer because we know more about the safety of drugs that have been around for a while. Having said this, I think patients usually make accurate judgments about their doctors.

So what’s the bottom line? Doctor-rating websites might provide some useful information. But don’t use them as your only source of information. If you can, ask trusted friends or family members. If you’re new to an area, as you are in this case, join a neighborhood email group and ask for a recommendation. Or call the local chapter of a condition-specific association and ask them for suggestions.

Of course, it makes the most sense to trust the judgments of people whom you know and respect. But you can learn something from people you don’t know, and who might be anonymous on the ratings website.

All the time, we hear people we don’t know making judgments about things. We decide from what they’ve said and how they’ve said it whether we believe them. It’s no different with doctor-rating websites.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve recently moved and would like to find a doctor for my kids and myself. I don’t know many people here yet, so I’ve hesitated to ask for personal recommendations. What do you think about physician-rating websites?

Dear Reader: There are a lot of doctorrating sites out there, like Healthgrades. com or RateMDs.com. Even websites that offer reviews of restaurants and repairmen (such as Yelp and Angie’s List) feature critiques of doctors, dentists and other clinicians.

Many of these sites have users give doctors a “star rating,” as you would rate a movie on Netflix. But according to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, narrative reviews, in which patients describe their experiences with clinicians in their own words, can add valuable context. They can allow readers to zero in on reviews from people with similar problems, needs and preferences. And if you understand why someone gave a clinician a certain score, you can weigh that information against what’s most important to you.

But even doctor-rating websites that provide space for personal comments – and many do – could, in my opinion, be improved. Many of these websites don’t present data on other important considerations. For example, does the doctor offer timely appointments? Does he or she follow authoritative guidelines for preventing and treating diseases? Do they follow up on recently discovered medical problems that need close monitoring?

In addition, most of the existing websites post comments from any source. There’s no assurance the reviews come from real or recent patients. Furthermore, the vast majority of doctors’ patients don’t offer their evaluations on doctor-rating websites. And the few

Now there are all these blogs and workshops, etc. on how to be the “best” mom, and all these lifestyle gurus who constantly tell them not to worry, they’re doing a great job. It just seems like a bunch of nonsense to me.

I think it’s because a generation or so back, moms began to elevate their children to top priority in the family over their husbands. What’s your take? – Puzzled Grandma In The South Dear Puzzled: The world is different today.

Many women feel torn because they want or need to work, while at the same time feel pressured to help their children succeed in an increasingly competitive world.

While it might seem like nonsense to you, I assure you it does not seem like nonsense to them. Women of your generation didn’t second-guess themselves because parenting a generation ago was simpler. If children seem to be the No. 1 priority these days it might be because both parents feel driven to succeed and are determined their children will, too.

Dear Abby: I have been married to my husband for 11 years. We are financially and emotionally stable. We recently became friendly with another couple who are newly married and not as financially secure as we are.

When we go on vacation, they invite themselves along and assume they are staying in our travel trailer without asking. They don’t offer to help pay for gas. The last trip we took, the wife cooked only one meal, while I prepared the rest for a three-day trip.

Father who swears at family members must work on improving vocabulary Dr. Wallace: My father is a good provider and I love him very much, but when he gets mad at my mother, my brother or me, he swears and says some nasty things. So, yes, your teacher does have the right to give you mandatory special instruction after school. A parent can stop the special after-school instruction, but somehow I don’t think this will happen.

Instead of complaining, you

should be thankful your teacher cares enough to work with you and make sure you understand the subject. Don’t forget, she’s doing this without being paid anything extra for her effort.

Personally, I feel she should be commended.

The other day I arrived home just as my 18-year-old daughter was walking out the door. Rather than saying hello, she blurted, “I’m in a rush, so I didn’t have time to replace the toilet paper on the toilet paper holder.” This may seem like a bizarre greeting, but both my kids know that failure to replace the TP is one of my major pet peeves.

Nevertheless, I get why my family fails at this. Replacing toilet paper on the common kind of holder is a pain; the tension rod often falls apart, and the inner spring pops out. It’s a flawed design. Frankly, I am not sure why we all haven’t updated our bathrooms with the single-arm, just-slip-the-tissue-roll-on style.

Which leads me to my New Year’s resolution: I am swapping out, hanging up and doing away with any past decorating decisions that are hard for my family to maintain. First on the list: a trip to Restoration Hardware for new toilet paper holders.

Next I am throwing in the towel – or, more accurately, hanging it up. I am tired of my kids leaving their wet

I am also making one change to my kitchen: I am installing pot racks so that I can see my pots clearly – no more digging in the back of a cabinet through a stack of frying pans. I’ll be able to see and grab the one I need when I need it. And yes, my pots have to be pretty and I’ll have to keep them well-scrubbed if they’re exposed on a rack, but a little elbow grease is worth it to improve access and free up some storage space.

All in all, I predict my changes will go over well. Less nagging, less work.

Certainly I will be giving up some of the precious decorating details that I love (beautiful sheets!), but I’ve learned over time that those decorating details are associated with work and maintenance. Supersize porcelain tiles make versatile material almost limitless

Special to The Washington Post For a home builder, the holy grail of materials is one that can do everything.

For a homeowner, the holy grail of materials is one that looks really good and requires no maintenance.

Such a material is now available but virtually unknown to most builders and homeowners in the United States.

It’s not a miracle of nanotechnology or even new. It’s that old workhorse, porcelain ceramic tile, updated with modern equipment and manufacturing processes to such a degree that it may change the look of suburbia as well as our notions of what constitutes a tile.

Manufacturers can now produce porcelain tiles that are huge (5-feetby-11-feet), really thin (1/8- to 1/4-inch thick) and absorb almost no water.

This latter detail means that these big tiles will not crack in freezing temperatures and can be used indoors, outdoors in temperate climates, and for an astonishingly broad range of applications. The tiles also are made in smaller sizes, although much larger than the 4-by-4-inch ones that are standard in so many bathrooms, and they can be nearly 3/4-inch thick, depending on the intended use.

The tiles are marketed in the United States by Tennessee-based Crossville, which calls its tiles Laminam,

pure white. Some of the tiles are a solid color, but others mimic wood, concrete, textile patterns, metals and natural stone. The marble lookalikes resemble the real thing so closely that even experts can be fooled.

When you see these supersize tiles in someone’s house for the first time, “great looking tile” is not likely to be your initial reaction. In fact, you probably won’t even realize that you’re looking at tile until someone tips you off. Unlike small, traditional tiles with grout lines running everywhere, big tiles have hardly any grout lines, and the few that are there are nearly invisible.

The big tiles with solid colors present a tasteful, unusual finish; the natural stone lookalikes, especially the marble ones, are stunning. Although marble has a long history in American interiors, the individual tiles have been small. (Homeowner tip: If you’re able to paint your walls and want white, Morris recommends Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, especially if you like a contemporary look and want to paint the walls and trim the same color. She also likes Benjamin Moore’s

black and gold, or you could do black and silver,” Morris said.

Keep the arrangement to an odd number of items, she adds, and throw in a mirror to make it more eye-catching.

• Use organic elements: The fastest way to inject life into a stark space is to add living things. Consider air plants; at most, you’ll need to submerge them in water for two to three hours every few weeks. And pick up flowers when you can and arrange them in an interesting vase. In between fresh bouquets, Gaines likes high-quality faux florals. “Good fake florals and good pillows can stand the test of time,” she said.

• Think about texture: Texture takes a design from stark and cold to interesting and warm. It helps you “warm up the space while still having a real simple palette,” Gaines said. The designer and owner of retail store Magnolia Market also likes to hang baskets with faux florals or leaf wreaths on the walls to give them texture. Anything the hand wants to reach out and touch is a winner here.
