‘It kind of reminds me of home’

New director starts at Town and Country Public Library KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Glenn Kahmann smiled Monday as he sat in a meeting room at the Town and Country Public Library in Elburn, ready to begin his first day as the library’s director.

Kahmann, 30, comes to Elburn after serving as the director of the Estill County Public Library in Irvine, Kentucky. He said he believes he will fit in.

“I really like how it’s situated around a larger city that’s really close to get to,” he said. “I grew up in a smaller town that Elburn reminds me of, Walton, in Kentucky. You could get to Cincinnati pretty easily, but you were removed enough away from it. You still had the rural life.

You could slow down. It does kind of remind me of where I grew up. It kind of reminds me of home.”

Kahmann is beginning his job in Elburn during Mary Lynn Alms’ final week. Alms has been the library’s director for about 35 years. Her final day is Friday, which also is the last day for Dwayne Nelson, the library’s youth services director. One of Kahmann’s first tasks will be to fill the vacancy left by Nelson’s departure.

“We’re going to want to move pretty quickly on that,” Kahmann said, adding that Nelson has been doing planning that can get the library

through March. Kahmann added that, “I don’t know how far we can stretch that into April.”

Despite his age, Kahmann has spent more than five years in the role of director. He was 24 years old when he became the director at Estill County. At the time, he said, he believed he was the youngest library director in Kentucky.

David Burroughs, the president of the Town and Country Public Library Board of Trustees, said there were 25 applicants for the director position.

“What made him stand out is his experience as a library director,” Burroughs said, adding that Kahmann’s term in Estill County was marked by projects. Kahmann said building repairs were necessary during his time as the library’s director. Also, he said the library received a grant that allowed it to expand the number of computers it had.

“The roof had to be done,” Kahmann said. “We redid the layout of the building. … We had to jackhammer the floor in the kitchen because old pipes were being corroded. We redid sidewalks. We redid parking, just about everything we could. Every single year, there was something big that had to be done.”

At the Elburn library, space has been an issue, with officials mentioning space crunches for both the library’s collection and programming. Kahmann said a need for space “seems to be a problem with just

“Print is not going away,” Kahmann said. “Tangible items are not going away. People still want them.

I still want them, even though I’ve grown up with technology. And they just inhabit so much space.”

That’s not to say that technology won’t be important. Kahmann said keeping up with new developments will be important.

“We definitely have to keep moving forward on it,” Kahmann said.

“We don’t want to fall behind.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Country Life pistachios recalled

The Kane County Health Department is advising the community that Country Life Natural Foods of Pullman, Michigan, is recalling shelled raw pistachios, sold in 2-pound bags and 30-pound boxes, because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. No illnesses have been reported to date, but the products were distributed to retail stores in Illinois and other states, as well as through mail order and direct delivery, states a Kane County Health Department news release. The 2-pound bags will bear the batch No. 1357 in the lower left corner of the Country Life Natural Foods Label.

The 30-pound boxes will bear the name “SAM International” Lot No. 102914, and

best-by date of April 29, 2016. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Consumers who have bought the recalled products should not eat them. They should return it to the point of purchase. Consumers with questions should call Country Life Natural Foods at 800-456-7694.

Audubon event at LeRoy Oakes

Shepro challenging Lauzen in GOP primary for chairman’s post on Kane County Board

asloboda@shawmedia.com With no Democratic candidate yet in the race for Kane County Board chairman, voters may very well select the next leader of county government in the Republican primary next month.

Incumbent Chris Lauzen of Aurora is seeking a second fouryear term, while challenger Ken Shepro of Chris Lauzen Wayne, an attorney, is making his first run for elective office.

Shepro, who previously served as the County Board’s attorney, criticized various aspects of Lauzen’s

tenure, including the feud between him and the coroner, his treatment of board members and an initiative he started called Kane County Connects.

“I think Kane County has fallen away from the regional leadership that it had,” Shepro said.

Lauzen said his campaign is focused on the “positive and professional.” He said he is seeking another term Ken Shepro to continue the “good work that our team is doing.”

If re-elected, Lauzen said, he hopes to work on expanding fiber optics in the county, investing efforts in tech-

“They used to tease me on the years where I didn’t have a birthday,” she said. “They would say, ‘You don’t have a birthday. You are not getting any party.’ … I would cry to my mom, who would throw me a big party.”

Pasham can look forward to a flood of Facebook messages. Theobald will be turning 16, making her eligible to get a driver’s license. Maupin just wants a sweet treat.

“There will definitely be ice cream to be had,” Maupin said. “I am an ice cream lover. … I definitely can make some ice cream treats at home, maybe a sundae. Or maybe I will make a trip over to Oberweis.”

In the past, she has celebrated at Key Lime Cove in Gurnee. This year, she will take the day off school and go someplace special. One year, when she was in fourth grade, she said she was upset about not having her special day.

“I was crying because my birthday wasn’t on the calendar,” she said, adding that “it wasn’t really a problem last year. … I realized that it wasn’t that bad anymore.”

Now, she said, she is not upset at all.

“I consider it a good thing,” she said.

“It’s sort of something to talk about.”

Alice Maupin, the director of the Durant House Museum in St. Charles, said she is excited to be able to enjoy an actual birthday Monday. She said she is turning 60, but she could say she is turning 15.

“My kids are older than me,” she said with a laugh. “How many people can say that?”

She said there are big plans.

“I will celebrate all day,” she said.

“People, of course, have known me for many years now, and people want to celebrate it with me. I’ve had people drop over at my house with flowers.

Playhouse 38 closing in on new home in Geneva Committee unanimously supports move to Stevens Street location

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Park District moved closer toward relocating its Playhouse 38 to 321 Stevens St., Geneva, after unanimous recommendations from the Geneva Committee of the Whole this week.

The theater’s current location below Hache Moderne Brasserie, 524 W. State St., Geneva, can accommodate 40 guests. The property on Stevens Street can accommodate up to 100 guests, officials said.

Geneva resident Brannon Anderson said she liked the park district’s plans.

“We love the idea of more people coming to the Stevens corridor,” Anderson said.

That area of Stevens Street is in a light industrial zoning district. The park district petitioned for a zoning text amendment to include theaters

among its permitted special uses, as well as a special use to allow the theater.

Aldermen voted unanimously for both, but final action will take place by the Geneva City Council. The city’s action follows approval by the plan commission, which also voted unanimously to amend the zoning text and to allow a theater at that location, officials stated.

In reviewing the zoning text amendment, city staff noted that other non-industrial uses already are permitted in that area. Other businesses include a chiropractor, coffee roaster, personal trainer and doggie day care, officials stated.

“It is staff’s opinion that a theater use does not pose any nuisance or hazard that would impact the [light industrial] district, and would not pose any land use compatibility concerns,” according to the staff’s review.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles high school students will showcase their talents next week during the 13th annual P-ARTS Variety Show, according to a news release.

The show is set for 7 p.m. March 4 at the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles.

Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults and will be available when the doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Scheduled performers include two bands – The Kings and The Giving Moon – as well as Leah Bieniak, Allison Cole, Jamie Dowat, Miranda Ellis, Lexie El Sherif, Mara Handler, Ashley Luoma, Nikky Macey, Kyle Pullman, Daniel Trinidad, Ally Watson and Gabrielle Willaert, according to the release.

Adele Hawkins, age 82, of Wasco died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at Michealsen Health Center Batavia.

She was born May 6, 1933, in St. Charles, IL, the daughter of the late Walter and Pauline Geske. She graduated from St. Charles High School in 1951 and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lily Lake.

She is survived by her daughter, Kimberlee (Douglas) Foss of Hampshire; and a son, Todd (Janie) Hawkins of Geneva. Five grandchildren, Jordan and Erin Foss, Logan, Drew, and Noah Hawkins. Also her brother, Thomas (Rosemary) Geske of St. Charles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard. Two brothers, Robert “Butch” Geske and Darrell Geske.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, at Yurs Funeral Home St. Charles. Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m.

Richard J. Stern, age 60, formerly of Rockford, died of an unexpected illness on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, with his family by his side.

Dick was born in St. Charles, on July 31, 1955, to parents Richard H. and June C. (Olson) Stern. He married his loving wife, Patricia, in St. Charles at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Dec. 11, 1982, before they moved to Belvidere in 1986 to raise their family. Patricia predeceased Dick in 2009.

Dick moved to Knoxville to continue his work as a tool and die maker for Vinylex. It was there that Dick found a renewed love for riding his Harley-Davidson though the hills of Tennessee. He loved his Chicago Bears, University of Tennessee football, and he could be best described as a gentle giant. A man of few words, but when they were spoken, they were meaningful.

Recently, Dick was engaged to be married to his friend, loving fiancee, and hiking companion, Maggie Hickman. His time on Earth was a blessing to us all, and we will miss him dearly.

Dick is survived by his two sons, Thomas (Allison) Stern and Timothy (Jenna) Stern; fiancee, Maggie Hickman; mother, June (Robert) Stern; siblings, Laura (Mark) Graf, John Stern, Kristin Sparks; grandchildren, Tricia and Liam Richard Stern; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Kane health dept. issues WBY Foods recall advisory

The Kane County Health Department is advising that WBY Foods of Marblehead, Massachusetts, is recalling its Chappaqua Crunch Simply Granola with Blueberries & Bananas mix, in 13-ounce packages, because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

No illnesses have been immediately reported to date in connection with the problem, but the recalled products were distributed nationwide through mail order, states a news release from the Kane County Health Department.

The product comes in a 13-ounce, clear plastic pouch and marked with best-by dates on the back. The recall includes best-by dates beginning with Feb. 5, 2016, and ending with May 31, 2016.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Consumers who have bought 13-ounce packages of Chappaqua Crunch Simply Granola with Blueberries & Bananas are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The Illinois Supreme Court recently decided that its extended media coverage policy will be permanent.

Since January 2012, cameras had been allowed on a pilot basis in trial courtrooms in 41 counties and 15 circuits in Illinois, including Kane County.

“Nothing changes in the way media request to do extended media coverage,” court spokeswoman Bethany Krajelis said. “Looking back at four years, it was successful. And there was no reason to keep it in pilot status.”

When a media organization asks to have cameras in a courtroom, its notice is filed by the media coordinator, the circuit clerk or by a court media liaison assigned by the chief judge to monitor the process, according to a news release.

“It is still all up to discretion of the judge,” Krajelis said. “They will still have the last say.”

Now that the program has gone from pilot to permanent, chief judges will have standardized forms in which to file required quarterly reports on extended media coverage, Krajelis said.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles wants feedback from its water customers.

The city is conducting a water use survey as required by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, according to a news release.

The organization requires every public water supply to have a comprehensive cross-connection control program.

Cross-connections are connections between a drinking water line and non-drinking water line, which can pose potential health hazards both in the residence or business and in the public water supply, the release states.

A backflow preventer device – which prevents reversal of the flow of the non-drinking water into the drinking water system in the home or business and into the public water supply – must be installed at these points of connection, the release states.

Such devices might be in

lawn irrigation systems, boilers, hot tubs, ponds, fountains and fire sprinkler systems, according to the release.

“St. Charles’s Cross-Connection Control Program is designed to safeguard public health,” the release states.

According to the release, information obtained in the survey will be used to ensure safe drinking water for all users by documenting whether a homeowner has certain water-related equipment and whether a backflow prevention device is installed.

The city has contracted Aqua Backflow to gather the survey data, the release states.

According to the release, all St. Charles water customers will receive a survey form in the mail. Surveys may be completed online or returned by fax, email or mail.

Those who have or require backflow protection might be notified for testing, repairs or installations, the release states.

Police: Mother charged Going on after dispute over Chuck E. Cheese’s arcade tickets

asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A children’s dispute over arcade tickets escalated into a physical altercation between their mothers, leading to criminal charges for one, Batavia police said.

The incident happened Feb. 13 at Chuck E. Cheese’s, 511 N. Shaquerra Randall Road, Batavia, Fultz when a discrepancy arose over the children’s tickets, Detective Kevin Bretz said.

Their parents “got into it,” he said of the physical altercation. He said the fight resulted in minor scratching and that no medical treatment was sought.

He noted the parties knew each other, and one of the mothers left before police arrived.

An officer later called the mother who had left, Shaquerra Fultz, who turned herself in to Batavia police on Friday, Bretz said.

Fultz, 29, of the 300 block of Springlake Lane, Aurora, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery.

Bretz said she posted bail and was released. She is expected in court March 8.

Former Kaneland principal to lead Hiawatha’s school district KIRKLAND – Hiawatha School District 426 will have a new superintendent beginning July 1, after the school board appointed Theodore “Chip” Hickman to lead the 580-student district.

Board President Ryan Block said that seven candidates were Theodore in the running out of Hickman a total 35 applicants.

The Illinois State Board of Education conducted the preliminary selection process. Block said he was impressed

with the research Hickman did before the interviews.

“He was well prepared and had done his homework,” he said. “He got specifics of where Hiawatha sits financially and where we want to go.”

Hickman also has experience in area school districts. He spent 10 years working in the Fox Valley area, working as an associate principal at Batavia High School and principal at Kaneland High School. He also has experience in the Rockford School District.

“We think he is a great fit for us,” Block said.

Hickman will replace interim school Superintendent Wayne Riesen.

Obama’s Cuba trip shows policy’s successes and limits BLOOMBERG VIEW With all due respect to Mick and Keith, a Rolling Stones concert is no longer a life-changing experience. Nor is a visit from a U.S. president, necessarily.

Change in Cuba – where these two events are scheduled for successive days next month – depends most of all on the Cuban government.

President Barack Obama’s trip to Cuba on March 21 is not, as its critics contend, a vote of confidence in President Raul Castro’s government. It is simply an opportunity for Obama to acknowledge both the successes of his policy and its limits.

More than a year after the normalization of ties began between the U.S. and Cuba, there are tangible signs of progress.

Commercial flights and ferry service from the U.S. will soon resume, bringing even more American travelers to Cuba. U.S. cellular companies now provide service on the island, and Internet access has improved. The first U.S. factory on Cuban soil in more than half a century will soon open. And serious talks have begun on issues such as investor protections, telecom regulations and environmental protection.

Like the hundreds of millions more dollars in U.S. remittances now lifting the fortunes of ordinary Cubans and fueling small businesses, these developments can have a powerful cumulative effect. For one thing, they raise popular expectations and put the onus for change squarely on Cuba’s government. Moreover, even with the embargo intact, a visit from a hugely popular American president may help to convince the Cuban people that the U.S. is no enemy.

So, you can expect an eloquent speech or two. But soaring rhetoric about free expression is meaningless without support for those who depend on it to criticize the Castro regime, which has increased its persecution of them. Obama also can help his credibility by recognizing that, for most Cubans, daily life is much as it was. The government retains overwhelming control of the economy.

Bringing about positive change in Cuba won’t be quick or easy. And a lot of what counts as change in Cuba is something that came to the rest of the world a long time ago (see: Stones, Rolling).

But recent developments in Latin America – Chavismo’s crackup in Venezuela, the election of a new president in Argentina, and the cease-fire in Colombia – make change in Cuba more likely. So, too, will Obama’s trip.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Paying homage to our women fighters

To the Editor: For too long, a celebrated group of more than 1,000 women who served our country during World War II have been denied the acknowledgement they deserve at our nation’s most hallowed cemetery. It’s time to right this wrong.

I support the Women Airforce Service Pilot Arlington Inurnment Restoration Act (H.R. 4336) to ensure cremated remains of women serving as Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during WWII are eligible for burial in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. This bill pays rightful homage to our women fighters and recognizes the many servicewomen hailing from our very own state of Illinois.

So, who are these women?

One well-known WASP, Elizabeth L. Gardner from Rockford, controlled the B-26 Marauder medium bomber at age 22. Libby recalled, “I was

called to duty when the war started to learn how to test planes, instruct pilots, tow targets used for anti-aircraft artillery practice and assemble planes ... I was eager and nervous and also had two days of training under Lt. Col. Paul Tibbets, who later commanded the B-29 that dropped the first atom bomb on Hiroshima.”

Dora Dougherty became the sixth woman in the country to earn an airline transport pilot license, quickly excelling as a B-29 Superfortress demonstration pilot. Following her service, she became a flight instructor at the University of Illinois.

Both women have passed away in recent years (roughly 110 WASPs survive today). All WASPs underwent the same military training as their male counterparts: marching, living in barracks, infantry drills and taking oaths of allegiance.

Had they been male pilots during WWII, they could have accepted active-duty commissioning following their 90-

day training period. But the policy and cultural hesitancy on women in the military was not what it is today.

We have made progress. In 2009 a bill passed by Congress awarding a Congressional Gold Medal to the WASPs was signed into law. Present at the ceremony were nearly 300 remaining survivors.

Yet instating full burial rights at Arlington National Cemetery is still unfinished.

Space constraints are well documented.

However, housing the cremated remains of a limited number of women is not unduly burdensome. In addition to supporting this legislation, I have written to the acting secretary of the Army requesting a plan to address the problem.

Until then, let’s celebrate these brave women and continue to push for full recognition of their service.

‘Learning experience’ before playoffs

editorial@kcchronicle.com WEST CHICAGO – In the second half of its third game in four nights Tuesday, the Kaneland boys basketball team lost its composure and lost the game.

The Knights surrendered 49 points in the second half against West Chicago en route to a 78-62 loss.

“We didn’t bring the defensive intensity that we needed. You combine that with turnovers and they capitalized,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said. “We know for us, we have to rebound. When we don’t rebound, we get beat.”

Ryan David led Kaneland (18-7) with 20 points, although 18 of those came in the first half. The senior swingman was smoldering in the first half, draining four 3-pointers, including a pair from nearly NBA-range, and propelled Kaneland to a 35-29 halftime lead.

“He was primarily the reason they were up at half. We could tell he was hot. He could tell he was hot,” West Chicago coach Bill Recchia said. “At halftime, we tried to isolate him and keep him from getting the ball and the kids did a great job.”

Right after intermission, however, forward Mitchel Groen picked up his fourth foul less than a minute into the third quarter.

The Knights were already missing 6-foot-6 center Jake Gomes due to illness, so that forced David to play in the post for much of the second half, rather than on the perimeter where he thrived in the first half. The result?

David finished with two points and didn’t attempt a 3-pointer in the second half.

“It was easier for them to put two or three guys on him and we didn’t move the ball and exploit that on every single possession,” Conroy said. “We did on some possessions, and got really good looks, but we didn’t do that on every possession.”

Without David’s shooting stroke to pace the offense, the Knights bogged down and the Wildcats (20-8) took over by getting to the free throw line. Trailing, 46-41, with less than three minutes remaining in the third, West Chicago’s Mike Bibbs hit a 3-pointer, his first field goal of the game, which prompted a 10-0 run to give West Chicago the lead for good. From Bibbs’ 3-pointer on, West Chicago finished the game on a 37-16 run.

With the postseason looming – the Knights host a Class 3A regional beginning next week – Tuesday’s disap-

pointment for Kaneland will quickly turn into a cautionary tale for future games.

“It’s a learning experience. We can’t take possessions off; we’re not that good,” Conroy said. “We came apart in the fourth quarter and that’s coaching, that’s not playing. We’ll make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

Marmion senior 182-pound wrestler Nathan Traxler joined 138-pound classmate AJ Jaffe as an IHSA Class 3A state champion Saturday night. Traxler, a St. Charles product committed to Stanford, repeated as winner, and has not fallen to an opponent from Illinois since his sophomore season. Traxler, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke about his accomplishments with sports editor Kevin Druley. Here’s an edited transcript:

The Marmion wrestling team edged Sandburg, 29-26, in Tuesday’s Class 3A Argo Team Dual Sectional to advance to Saturday’s state quarterfinals against longtime rival Montini at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

Hosting the Broncos in a Chicago Catholic League dual last month, the Cadets rolled, 54-15, defeating their fellow perennial power for the first time.

Marmion built an early 12-3 advantage Tuesday behind a fall from two-time defending 182-pound state champion Nathan Traxler, who competed at 220, and decision victories from Wes Kramer (195) and Trevor Chumbley (106). Sandburg surged ahead as its lower weights prevailed, but the Cadets’ Peter Ferraro put Marmion on top again with a fall at 138.

The Cadets then sealed the result as another reigning individual champion, AJ Jaffe, earned a technical fall at 145 before Mikey Callahan (152) and Trace Carello (160) collected decisions in their bouts.

Burlington Central boys hoops wins BNC East outright

MARENGO – The Burlington Central boys basketball team achieved everything it needed in its regular-season finale Tuesday.

The Rockets bounced back from their first loss in 15 games with an intense effort, particularly on the defensive end, and rolled past Marengo, 64-38, at Homer “Bill” Barry Gymnasium.

The victory gave Central (25-3, 13-1 Big Northern Conference East Division) the outright division championship.

Had Marengo (21-7, 11-3) defeated the Rockets, the Indians would have shared the title.

That outcome, however, was dashed pretty early as Central’s full-court pressure and big man Ryan Fitzgerald took control in the first half.

Fitzgerald scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the first half, and Central forced Marengo into 15 first-half turnovers.

“We needed to exceed their intensity, and I think we did a good job of that,” Fitzgerald said. “We came out knowing a win would win it outright for conference and we played with a lot of heart tonight. That was one of our best games of the season and it’s great to have right before postseason.”

Central is the top seed at the Class 3A Glenbard South Regional next week.

The Rockets were coming off their only BNC East loss, a setback Friday at Genoa-Kingston.

“We were most upset with our effort and (not) getting after it on the defensive end (Friday),” Rockets coach Brett Porto said. “We tried to focus our attention on that the last few days, and I thought we played a pretty good complete defensive game against a good offensive team in Marengo.”

The Indians suffered their largest losing margin of the season and had their lowest point total.

Zach Schutta added 11 points with three 3-pointers for Burlington, and Ethan Mayfield and Joe Ratzek scored 10 apiece.

Zach Knobloch led Marengo with 19 points and has 121 3s for the season.

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – It’s hard to complain about much when your performance sets a pool record. But for St. Charles East diver Andrew Lewarchick, perfection is something ever striven for.

Lewarchick’s score of 499.60 on 11 dives at the IHSA St. Charles North Sectional this past weekend set a North pool record as the senior won the title to advance to Friday’s boys swimming and diving state preliminaries at Evanston.

“It was probably my most consistent meet I’ve ever had,” Lewarchick said. “For the past month or so, I’ve had all of my dives down; it’s just a matter of cleaning them up. It’s no different now between sectionals and state because I know what I need to work on, and those are the things I’m continuing to improve on and work at.”

Saints coach Joe Cabel talked about Lewarchick from Day 1, knowing the potential was there to do some special things in his final season.

Cabel knew it was a big deal for Lewarchick to win the sectional and set a pool record, but also knows there’s more in the tank.

“Winning a title in diving is a big deal, no doubt,” Cabel said. “He’s coming on very well, but he dove, but he’ll dive better. I can promise you that.”

Lewarchick will look to improve on last season’s 23rd-place finish at the state meet.

Will Myhre not only has his older brother, Joe, as a leader of the North swim team, but has also had a fair amount of success this season, which translated into the pool at sectionals.

Myhre was the sectional champion in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.74, which was fourth fastest by any state qualifier.

The Myhres have pushed each other, never wanting to lose to each other, whether it be practice or meets, and Will Myhre got to see Joe, an Iowa-bound senior, throw the first metaphorical punch in that competition.

Joe Myhre set a pool record in the 100 freestyle (45.77), cruising to a vic-

tory and sectional championship. Will followed that up with his win in the breaststroke.

Both Myhre brothers took part in the North Stars’ 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relays, both of which qualified for state.

Kamps leads young Cadets to state: It was expected and accomplished Will Kamps, Marmion’s sophomore distance swimmer, became a two-time state qualifier after his 4:39.35 in the 500 freestyle and 1:56.66 in the 200 IM at the Metea Valley Sectional.

Kamps will be joined by freshman Nolan Fergus (100 butterfly) and sophomore Gary Rockwood (100 breaststroke). The Cadets also qualified the 200 and 400 freestyle relays for Friday’s preliminaries.

Here’s an example of how it might work: If you get stuck in traffic on the way to work, first take a few deep breaths to reduce physical tension and step back from the stressor before you react. Then, reflect: “It’s just a traffic jam. I can handle this. It’s not worth getting this upset.”

Don’t assume you’ll be fired. Tell yourself, “I’ll just be a few minutes late. I’m doing the best I can. I can handle this.”

It might seem simplistic; it might sound too good to be true. And it doesn’t happen just like that: It’s not an instant cure. It takes work, focus, concentration and a talented therapist. And it takes time.

But the value of cognitive behavioral therapy, including cognitive restructuring, has been shown in scientific studies.

It is the most important new type of talk therapy I’ve seen in my professional career.

Dear Reader: Cognitive restructuring is one part of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a type of “talk therapy” that attempts to correct ingrained patterns of negative thoughts and behaviors.

CBT is the leading therapy for anxiety.

It also is used to treat stress, depression, eating disorders and many other problems.

Cognitive restructuring can help you change the way you think. That, in turn, can help change the way you feel.

To better understand how it works, try to remember your thoughts the last time you were late for work. Perhaps your first thought was simply “The train is late.”

But then that quickly transformed into “I’ll be late to work. I won’t make it to my meeting on time. My job is in jeopardy.”

This is an example of negative automatic thinking. Scenarios like this can activate the stress response almost as easily as a growling Doberman pinscher starting to run toward you.

Our negative thoughts often are riddled with irrational distortions. For example, you might have an “all or nothing” attitude. If you don’t perform flawlessly, you consider yourself a complete failure.

Another example is overgeneralization. If you do this, you take one negative event – such as rude service at a restaurant – as part of an endless pattern of dismaying circumstances and defeat.

Perhaps you exaggerate potential problems or mistakes until they take on the proportions of a catastrophe. Or you jump to conclusions: an observation your

first remark go without speaking up. The right way to respond to the person’s racist comment would have been to say it offended you and you would prefer not to hear that kind of language from him again. Physical violence is not the correct way to get a point across.

If you must associate with this person, apologize for flying off the handle. Otherwise, avoid him.

Dear Abby: I’m in love with two men. My husband, “Victor,” and I have been together for nine years and were married last year.

The other man in my life, “Wade,” was my boss, and we’ve been seeing each other for two years.

It also might be wise to contact the police department and file a complaint.
