Geneva Girl Scouts sled for Casey’s Safe Haven

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – About 30 Girl Scouts went sledding Saturday at the Fabyan Forest Preserve for a good cause.

The Girl Scouts, representing various troops in Geneva, participated in a supply drive event called Sled for the Horses to benefit Casey’s Safe Haven near Elburn.

The girls dropped off about 25 rolls of paper towels, 10 pounds of carrots, 20 pounds of sweet potatoes and a couple of bottles of olive oil before they went sledding by the Fabyan Windmill.

The food and supplies will help the horses and ponies at Casey’s Safe Haven, which is a nonprofit holistic horse rescue.

“The girls loved Casey’s so much; they wanted to do this for the horses,” Caviness said.

Caviness said her daughter, Maddy, 7, was so excited to be at Casey’s during a separate trip that she couldn’t stop moving around. She was able to recite the names of a couple of the horses she met at the rescue facility after sledding with her brother and two sisters Saturday.

Troop 45 member Gianna Valenti also was with her family at the event.

Gianna helped send a doll of the “Frozen” movie character Elsa down the sledding hill during a Girl Scout cookies box race with three other dolls. Another movie character – Merida from “Brave” – won the doll race.

“It was really fun when you went down, but when you go up it was [tricky] because of the ice,” Gianna, 8, said.

Aurora mall among those threatened by terrorist group

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – The Department of Homeland Security is downplaying a threat made by terror group al-Shabab against malls across the United States, including the Westfield mall in Aurora and the Mall of America in Minnesota.

“FBI and DHS have provided local law enforcement and other first responders, as well as private sector partners, with relevant information regarding the recent alShabab propaganda video,” DHS spokesperson Marsha Catron wrote in an email.

Kane County forest preserve hearing set on LeRoy Oakes

Bell Graham Elementary Campton Hills primary election set School to reopen today after pipe burst on Friday

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Bell Graham Elementary School is scheduled to be open today after a pipe burst ended school early Friday and canceled classes Monday, said Jim Blaney, St. Charles School District 303 spokesman.

The school, at 4N505 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills, underwent a three-stage cleaning process, Blaney said. After-school activities also were canceled at the school Monday.

The first stage involved a professional cleaning crew on Friday and Saturday.

The school’s regular custodial services on Sunday took care of the second stage, and the school’s teachers on Monday reorganized their classrooms for stage three.

“Everyone left in a rather hasty fashion on Friday,” Blaney said.

About 11:15 a.m. Friday, a pipe connected to the school’s sprinkler system burst while it was still frozen, Blaney said. Once the pipe thawed, water began to spill out.

Students were bused and relocated to Haines Middle School by 1 p.m. Friday, Blaney said. The students were dismissed at their normal time, but parents were contacted in case they wanted to pick their child up earlier in the afternoon, he said.

Families were notified at noon Sunday that there would be no classes on Monday, Blaney said.

About half of the school building was directly affected by the pipe burst, Blaney said. Once the excess water was removed from the school, carpets were cleaned and any damaged items were taken away.

Large fans have been

running in the building for three days, Blaney said.

Blaney said he was not aware of any electrical problems as a result of the pipe burst, noting that power was shut off during the incident.

School days have to be made up only if the entire district is closed, so Bell Graham will not have an extra day at the end of the year, Blaney said.

As of Monday, the final day of classes for all District 303 schools is June 4, Blaney said.

CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills voters will have a primary election scheduled for today, and the village’s eight polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Kane County election officials said.

During early voting the past two weeks, 110 ballots were cast, said Suzanne Fahnestock, chief deputy clerk of elections for the Kane County Clerk’s Office.

The primary ballot will include candidate Harry Blecker for village president. Also on the ballot will be incumbent Trustees Laura Andersen and Susan George, who are running for re-election, and newcomer Michael O’Dwyer, who

is running for a trustee position. The candidates on the primary ballot will advance to the April 7 consolidated election, so long as they receive any votes. In the April election, voters will determine who will fill three open trustee seats, as well as the positions of village president and village clerk.

Two write-in candidates have declared for the primary ballot – Steve Galloway for trustee and Nicholas Girka for clerk. Galloway is an ally of Village President Patsy Smith, and Girka is aligned with Blecker.

If Galloway gets 10 percent of the total votes cast for the lowest vote-earning trustee candidate who is on the ballot, Galloway’s name will be printed on the April 7 consolidated

election ballot, said Fahnestock, supervisor of elections.

In order for Girka to have his name printed on the April 7 ballot, Fahnestock said he would need 18 votes – which is 1 percent of the 1,744 votes cast for village clerk in 2011.

Smith filed as a write-in candidate, along with a slate of three other write-ins – Stephany Impson for clerk and Michael Turgeon and Donald Sheluga for trustees – for the April 7 consolidated election.

The validity of the write-in candidates is being challenged

by Campton Hills resident and attorney James Newman. Kane County Judge David Akemann is scheduled to hear arguments on the complaint Thursday at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES Batavia student born with a severe congenital heart defect

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Like most 6-year-old girls, Sydney Mowen is full of energy.

She has been keeping busy in a ballet class offered through the Batavia Park District.

“I like doing twirls,” said Sydney, who is in first grade at Louise White Elementary School in Batavia. The family lives in the Savannah subdivision in Aurora.

Sydney has overcome many obstacles. She was born with a severe congenital heart defect called Shone’s Complex, which typically is comprised of four anomalies to the left side of the heart. Sydney endured five open heart bypass surgeries before the age of 6. She was born about 6½ weeks premature at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Her twin brother, Niklas, has no known congenital heart defects. Sydney also has been diagnosed with esotropia, which can cause her to experience blurry or double vision when she is looking down.

“She’s very energetic,” said her father, Jim Mowen. “You look at her, and you would never know what she has gone through.”

The American Heart Association has designated February as American Heart Month as a way for people to develop more awareness about heart disease.

In addition, groups, such as The Children’s Heart Foundation, which is based in Lincolnshire, will work to raise awareness about congenital heart defects.

Sydney’s family members have tried to create awareness on their own through their story and their involvement in the Illinois chapter of The Children’s Heart Foundation.

“Because the awareness isn’t there, the funding isn’t there,” said Sydney’s mother, Jennifer Mowen. “The more we can get out that it is the No. 1 birth defect and hopefully raise funds, the better. There have been so many advances in the last 20 years.”

About 40,000 babies are born every year in the United States with congenital heart defects, making it America’s No. 1 birth defect, according to The Children’s Heart Foundation. Since its inception in 1996, the nonprofit organization has funded more than $7.3 million of research into congenital heart defects.

The organization was

formed after the death of a 8-year-old boy after a sudden heart-related collapse.

“Education and awareness are big components,” said William Foley, executive director of The Children’s Heart Foundation. “We are doing the best we can to sort of notify the general public of the incidents of congenital heart defects, as well as to assist families once their child is diagnosed. A lot of people don’t know about the disease until it is right on their doorstep.”

Sydney’s first open heart surgery was when she was a week old. She weighed 4 pounds, 7 ounces.

Her last open heart surgery was in July 2013 at Lurie Chil-

dren’s Hospital of Chicago.

During the 10-hour-plus surgery, her diseased aortic valve was removed and replaced with her own pulmonary valve.

Then a donor pulmonary valve was put in place as Sydney’s new pulmonary valve.

Her parents noted that Sydney has a sassy personality that has helped her cope with adversity. Sassy also is her nickname.

“When they were really little kids, he couldn’t say Sydney, so he called her Sassy,” Jim Mowen said. “That kind of stuck with her. She does have that sassy personality, in a good kind of way.”

Through all her surgeries, they have tried to remain opti-

mistic. Jim Mowen said, “You can’t go into surgery with a negative outlook. Yeah, you’re going to be scared and nervous, but you just have to find the courage to deal with it.”

They are just happy that Sydney hasn’t had a procedure in 19 months. She previously had been having a surgical procedure about every 10 to 16 months, they said.

Sydney also has no desire to go back to the hospital anytime soon.

“I just don’t like being in the hospital,” she said.

Her father said “she’s a tough little kid, and she’s a fighter.”

“I’m just amazed by her every day,” he said.

“We’ve been doing it for the last three years,” Stith said. “I think this will bring us up to over $17 million … in what we’ve abated back.”

Stith said the district’s efforts keep taxes from rising because of the debt payments.

According to the district’s website, voters approved a capital bond issue in 2000, which officials issued in 2001 for about $22.3 million.

Parents did not want their children to miss a chance to play outside Saturday, when temperatures were above 30 degrees for the first time in several days, Caviness said.

Kris Anderson, visitor coordinator at Casey’s, said she appreciated the turnout and the supplies for horses. Anderson was at the event with pictures of the various horses, showing their weakened conditions when they arrive to the rescue and their improved appearance once they get love, affection and a good diet.

“This was above and beyond,” Anderson said of the girls’ event. “Here they are part of the community helping the barn help horses, and the horses in turn help people.”

CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A fire that caused an estimated $20,000 in damages at a single-family ranch home early Saturday morning remains under investigation, fire officials said. No one was injured in the incident, which fire crews first received as a report of a possible structure fire at 3:41 a.m.

Saturday. The home is in the 36W800 block of Middlecreek Lane in St. Charles Township, according to a news release from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

Upon arrival at 3:49 a.m.

Saturday, firefighters saw smoke from outside the home and found a developing fire in a small attic area above a bathroom, according to the release.

Fire crews confirmed that all occupants of the house were out at this time. Firefighters reached the fire, extinguished it with a handline and found that the impact was limited to the bathroom and the attic area above the bathroom, the

release states. The fire was under control by 4 a.m. Saturday, according to the release.

The provided damage estimate was $10,000 of property damage and $10,000 of damage to the contents. The fire had burned completely through several attic joists, the release states.

Fire crews ventilated and cleaned up the area, but lots of drywall and insulation had to be torn down to get to the fire remains, said Greg Benson, the district’s fire chief, in a phone interview Saturday afternoon.

The house’s smoke detectors did not immediately alert the residents, since the fire was located above the detectors, according to the release. The homeowner said he woke up, smelled smoke and called 911 right away, the release states.

The district in the release reminded residents to contact 911 if smoke is observed in their homes at any time.

The fire departments that assisted the district with this incident were Elburn, Elgin, Pingree Grove and South Elgin, according to the release.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee Monday put its preliminary support behind a series of code revisions tied to alcohol and licensing for business.

The Government Services Committee voted, 8-0, in favor of the proposed revisions.

Ward 1 Alderman Dan Stellato was absent from Monday’s meeting.

The revisions have been a work in progress over the past few months between city staff and the St. Charles Police Department, St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said.

The revisions will allow the city to have increased regulations over businesses that serve or allow alcohol and patrons who might become unruly.

“I want to be firm and fair in our resolve,” Keegan said at the meeting.

The proposal includes a fine of $500 for a first related offense of fighting and $250 for a first offense of public urination. Fines for subsequent offenses will not be more than $750, according to the proposal.

The changes also include starting a licensing process for BYOB – bring your own

beer – establishments, which aren’t regulated in the city.

The proposed rules include two new annual liquor licenses – a $100 F1 license for BYOB establishments that only allow beer and wine, and a $250 F2 license for establishments that would allow spirits in addition to beer and wine.

E&S Fish Company, 311 N. 2nd St., and Liu Brothers Bistro, 1554 E. Main St., both in St. Charles, would fall under the F1 license and La Vita Cigars, 2015 Dean St., would fall under the F2 license because they allow spirits and are a social club, according to Keegan.

Ward 5 Alderman Maureen Lewis opposed the F2 license because it allows spirits, or hard liquor. She voted to recommend the proposed changes for approval to the full City Council and requested that Keegan report back to the aldermen with any ways to limit the amount of F-2 licenses issued.

Keegan and St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina told Lewis that establishing an F2 license would require all applicants to be considered individually before the Liquor Control Commission and city council.

“If we remain silent on it, we have no restrictions on it,” Keegan said.

OBITUARIES BARBARA J. COOK Born: Sept. 2, 1921; in Traverse City, MI Died: Feb. 21, 2015; in St. Charles, IL Barbara J. Cook, age 93, of St. Charles, died Saturday, February 21, 2015, at her residence.

She was born September 2, 1921, in Traverse City, Michigan. The daughter of the late Louis and Annette Johnson.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church Geneva. Her greatest joy was the love of her family.

She is survived by three children, Cynthia Leibson of Chicago, James Cook of San Diego, CA, and Carolyn (Terry) Schowe of St. Charles. Five grandchildren, Mike Cook, Sarah Bryan, Kate Good, Scott Schowe and Anna Schowe. Four great grandchildren, Samuel, Andrew, Lucas and Lily. Also a brother, Bud Johnson of Traverse City, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cook; and a brother, William Johnson.

Memorial Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 27th at St. Peter Catholic Church 1891 Kaneville Road Geneva. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Geneva.

LOANE DRENDEL Born: April 27, 1926 Died: Feb. 21, 2015 Loane “Lou” Drendel, age 88, of Elburn, passed away following a prolonged battle with various respiratory ailments at Greenfields, where she recently made her home, on Saturday, February 21, 2015.

Wayne graduated from Rock Island High School in 1951, and continued his education at Augustana College, graduating in 1955. Upon completion of college, Wayne enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1957. On January 11, 1958, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Delp.

Wayne worked in various purchasing departments and in sales and sales management until retirement.

Wayne was a life member of the Batavia Masonic Lodge #405 (a master three times), Scottish Rite-Valley of Chicago, Tebala Shriners; Batavia Shrine Club, Fox Valley Shrine Club, Cryptic Masons #130, Fox River Chapter #14 RAM and Aurora Commandery #22.

Wayne wanted everyone to know how deeply he loved Carolyn and all his family.

Wayne is survived by his children, Steven (Kelly) of Plainfield and Susan Funk of Wheaton; eight grandchildren, Beth, Kathy, Aaron Genske, Ashley, Kimberly, Rick, Michael and Tori; a son-in-law, Paul Genske of Gainesville, FL; one sister, Nancy Funk of Evanston, IL; his brother-in-law, Don (Nancy) Delp of Ocala, FL; a sister-in-law, Patsy Tonn of Brunswick, ME; two cousins, Shirley Hammons and Kathy (Bob) Kulof; and many nieces and nephews.

Aggressive periodontitis is a highly destructive form of the disease that occurs in patients who are otherwise healthy, according to the American Dental Association.

Treatment of gum disease, gingivitis and/or periodontitis vary depending on how far the progression has progressed.

The American Dental Association advises good dental care at home, as well as regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations, are crucial to keep the disease from becoming more serious or recurring.

Lorraine J. Mason, age 92, of Geneva, passed away Monday, February 23, 2015, at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born July 4, 1922, in Aurora, the daughter of Birch and Ethel (Young) Bentley.

In 1945, Lorraine graduated from North Central College, where she lettered in four sports.

Upon graduation, Lorraine went on to be a social worker at the Elgin State Hospital. She retired from there after 35 years.

Lorraine was always a social butterfly - she loved spending time with family and friends on the family boat at Starved Rock Marina, and also enjoyed traveling the world with her lady friends.

BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 Board members are set to vote today on whether Batavia School District 101 should become a part of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School based at Aurora University.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Rosalie M. Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The school is a partnership of Aurora University and West Aurora, East Aurora and Indian Prairie school districts.

Oswego School District had been part of the partnership, but later withdrew. Batavia’s school board has applied for membership in the STEM Partnership School, and its governing board has accepted the application.

As proposed, 50 Batavia students from third through eighth grade would go to the school. In addition, the district would supply two teachers to the school for a two- to four-year period.

The school opened in August. The cost for Batavia students to attend the school would be an estimated $7,400 a pupil.

Transportation is provided by the school districts in the partnership.

In deciding recently not to join the partnership, Kaneland School District 302 Board members cited cost as the main factor. The cost to the district would have been estimated at $375,000.

Batavia School Board member Jon Gaspar recently voiced financial concerns about the proposal.

“I don’t want any hidden costs that we will be surprised with,” Gaspar had said. “I want to be careful with the financial part.”

‘Sickening brutality’ in North Korea THE WASHINGTON POST Rarely does a United Nations investigation produce such clarity and impact as did the Commission of Inquiry on human rights violations in North Korea.

The report, issued a year ago, documented the existence of political concentration camps in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and a regime that has treated its people with sickening brutality. The stark prose and searing details of the report prompted votes at the United Nations that, in effect, put the issue on the ongoing agenda of the Security Council.

But now what? What can be done to get concrete help for the victims? There is a danger that as other pressing concerns about North Korea accumulate – nuclear weapons, missiles, cyberattacks – the world will lose interest in the human rights disaster. The United States must not let this happen.

The U.N. commission, chaired by Michael Kirby, a former justice of the High Court of Australia, found that North Korea’s leaders should be held accountable for the abuses and recommended referral to the International Criminal Court for investigation of crimes against humanity. We believe a referral by the Security Council is a justified step, and if, as expected, Russia or China decide to use their veto power, it would expose them as protectors of leader Kim Jong Un and his circle of thugs. However, the veto threats are real, and a referral is not going to happen, at least not now.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Also, one of the most prominent witnesses to the depravity of the North, Shin Dong-hyuk, recently changed some elements in his account. Shin’s story, described by journalist Blaine Harden in the book “Escape from Camp 14,” was terrifying. His recent changes do not make it much better. More to the point, the changes do not undermine the larger conclusions of the U.N. commission, which received public testimony from some 80 witnesses.

Much of their testimony was corroborated by increasingly accurate satellite photos of the concentration camps, Kirby told us last week. The commission found evidence in North Korea of “extermination, murder, enslavement, torture, imprisonment, rape, forced abortions ... persecution on political, religious, racial and gender grounds,” as well as forced starvation and other abuses.

Much work remains to be done. A key step is to provide adequate financial resources for the U.N. office of the special rapporteur for human rights in North Korea, Indonesian lawyer Marzuki Darusman. A related and significant initiative, just starting, is the establishment of an office by the United Nations in South Korea that will continue to investigate human rights abuses in North Korea, with an eye toward identifying who in the regime’s leadership is responsible for the horrors so that they can eventually be held to account – and so that current officials may think twice before becoming complicit in an ongoing crime against humanity.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR WHERE ARE THE ROLE MODELS? To the Editor: It’s unfortunate for the Jackie Robinson West team and their young players that their hardearned Little League national championship was invalidated due to an alleged breach of rules by those adults in charge of the team. Demonstrating a total lack of integrity, honesty and fair play, they appear to

have cheated, broken rules and were caught.

While the kids are the victims here, parents have further exacerbated the incident by calling the ruling decision nothing more than racism. This is a total misperception, which ignores the fact that rules are rules and are made to be followed and not broken.

By calling this a racist incident rather than admitting that

cheating should not be allowed, they – too – are contributing to this lack of moral discipline that is so absent in the violent neighborhoods of Chicago.

Where are the role models for these kids to look up to?

Cheaters and racist accusations are not what these kids need to become responsible adults.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles East girls basketball players internalized a defense-first credo once more during Monday’s Class 4A Geneva Sectional semifinal against top-seeded Conant.

Apparently, the mindset lingered several minutes after the Saints earned a 62-47 victory.

Ushered into the Geneva faculty lounge per new postgame protocol, East seniors Katie Claussner and Kyra Washington bypassed complementary cookies to discuss the effort that boosted the team to an 11th straight win.

“It’s actually amazing. I mean, just to be able to make it this far, when last year, unfortunately, it ended in the first [postseason] game,” Claussner said.

“So just to keep winning like this and playing amazing basketball, beating teams that beat us before. You know, we could possibly be playing Geneva Thursday, and we know we can beat them. So, I mean, it’s a great feeling.”

East (22-7) avenged its most recent defeat, a 70-64 nonconference home loss to Conant on Jan. 20.

The Saints advanced to Thursday’s sectional final against the winner of tonight’s game between Geneva and Bartlett. It’s East’s first time in this round since 2005, when veteran coach Lori Drumtra was an assistant to Steve Schreiner.

Glancing at Claussner and Washington, longtime friends and college recruits, Drumtra noted the point guardwing duo was “just little bitty kids back then.” Moments later, Claussner spoke of the newfound vibe that experienced some of its origins in these very Geneva halls.

The season looked dire enough that the Royals were worried about making the wrong kind of program history – a far cry from what unfolded Monday night.

Rosary pulled off its second straight postseason upset in beating Woodstock, 55-51, in an IHSA Class 3A Hampshire Sectional semifinal, earning the Royals their first sectional final berth in program history.

Despite their third straight postseason win, the Royals (13-17) would need to win the state championship to reach the .500 mark. But a losing record will be far from their mind when Thursday’s sectional final against Rockford Lutheran tips off.

Rosary coach Jessie Terrell said the team had plenty of soul-searching to do as it sputtered in December and January.

“My assistant coach (Don Rasich) early in the season when we were going through a rough time went to them and said ‘How do you want this season to end? Do you want to be known as Rosary’s worst team in history?’

“They’ve worked, and now they’ve just proved that their Rosary’s best team in history. It might not be overall record-wise, but it’s not where you start, it’s where you end, and this is something that can never be taken away from them.”

Where Rosary started certainly mattered Monday. A tone-setting first quarter allowed Rosary to play from the lead throughout, as senior guard Quincy Kellett scored 13

of her game-high 22 points in the opening 8 minutes to push the underdog Royals to a 16-10 lead.

Kellett, usually more of a slasher than a perimeter sniper, included a pair of 3-pointers in her hot start.

“I’m not used to that but it was fun,” Kellett said. “When I shoot well, I shoot well, but I’m not a big shooter.”

Added Terrell: “The start of the [game] is always important to us because we’re a team that lives and dies with confidence.”

Kellett (four first-half steals) also helped badger Woodstock (19-12) into 15 firsthalf turnovers, most while trying to run half-court offense, as the Royals led at halftime, 27-18.

Starters Megan Conlin and Taylor Drozdowski each missed substantial time earlier in the season with injuries, and their returns have fortified the Royals’ rotation. Conlin scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a key sequence in which she scored and was fouled, missed the free throw but swiped a steal off Woodstock’s rebound and scored again to

put the Royals up, 45-33, with about 5:30 to go.

“It was definitely a motivational time, like ‘OK, we got this, we can do it, we’re going to put this team away,’ ” Conlin said. “We came forth and we set our goals and had the victory.”

By the time the Blue Streaks’ offense began to click in the fourth quarter, it was too late, as Rosary made enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the win, despite Kellett fouling out in the final minute.

“I think they’re a team that works extremely hard, and I think a lot of people underestimate when you have a team that plays with heart,” Woodstock coach Jennifer Nichols-Hogle said of Rosary.

“They definitely play with heart. That’s one thing we talked about as a team. We had the size advantage but we definitely had to outplay them as far as effort goes, and I just think that part of our game was missing tonight.”

Drozdowski added eight points and Adrienne Winkel had six points – all in the third quarter – to go with seven rebounds for the Royals.

“Second half, I just tried to stay in front of her, get through all the screens and every time she got the ball, I just got low on defense,” Washington said. “And she really didn’t do much.”

Neither did Conant, which shot just better than 20 percent from the field after the break and did not register a fourth-quarter field goal until 1:44 remained, a Lomas bucket that cut East’s lead to 58-45.

Claussner, whose career-best 30 points kept East afloat in the regular season game against the Cougars, led the Saints with 21 points.

Washington sparked the effort with a 4 for 5 showing and seemingly held the trump card whenever the Cougars threatened to embark on a long run.

In the second half, East attempted just three 3s, as defense created offense in transition. Claussner, who Conant coach Deirdre Naughton dubbed “the best point guard we’ve played all year” thanks to her mix of speed and control, sparked the charge to eliminate the Cougars’ own running game.

Washington (20) and freshman Sara Rosenfeldt (13) also finished in double figures for the Saints, who remain giddy about the chance to give the Jeff Krage for Shaw Media program its best state series run in 10 seasons. On Saturday evening, I tweeted a picture of a female IHSA wrestling official holding a heaping helping of cotton candy, along with the message that 588 of the 672 athletes who traveled to the state tournament now could eat the same delicacy.

That total represented the wrestlers who weren’t competing in the three-class individual finals but nonetheless omitted several others still monitoring their weight.

Many mat rooms around the state remain in operation as teams prepare for today’s dual team sectionals.

Kaneland, a Class 2A participant, and 3A power Marmion are among them, even amid individual success.

“I’m going to enjoy this tonight,” Marmion junior 170-pounder Riley DeMoss said Saturday after winning a 170-pound title. “We’ve got practice bright and early (Sunday) morning to get ready. Then it’s all about the team.”

Five of Marmion’s six individual state qualifiers placed, led by champions Nathan Traxler (182) and DeMoss.

As always, the Cadets credit a daunting schedule – which included trips to tournaments in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Rochester, Minnesota – for building their mettle for the state series, which continues with tonight’s visit to Shepard to face Lyons.

“It’s a battle-tested schedule, definitely, and it makes us real tough, I guess you could say,” said junior A.J. Jaffe, who took third at 138. “I mean, going through all these tough opponents, you know, you don’t really have an easy weekend. So it just really makes us battle-tested and ready for the end of the year, especially state.”

DeMoss, Traxler extend Cadets’ tradition of downstate excellence

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – Consciously trading a social life for the pursuit of an IHSA Class 3A state wrestling title, Riley DeMoss switched his Twitter handle to @NoFunRiley before the season.

“Tonight, I might change it to @FunRiley,” DeMoss said Saturday.

DeMoss, a 170-pound Marmion junior, jubilantly achieved his objective at last, completing his run to the crown with a 5-4 victory against Willowbrook freshman Jack Jessen in the championship match.

Moments later, classmate and longtime friend Nathan Traxler topped previously unbeaten Rockton Hononegah senior Tyler Demoss, 7-3, for the title at 182 Five Marmion athletes placed in all to cap another big weekend for the program at the State Farm Center.

“The best part of it all is not one of them is graduating,” Cadets co-coach Ryan Cumbee said.

Consistent with the Cadets’ recent routine, the individual state tournament doesn’t mark the end of their season.

DeMoss (39-5) and Traxler (41-2) will look to lead Marmion past Lyons in Tuesday’s 3A Shepard dual team sectional. The winner earns a berth to another downstate locale, Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum, for the conclusion of that tournament this weekend.

Busy February itineraries feel commonplace for the Cadets on the heels of a grueling regular-season schedule that takes them around the Midwest each winter. Of course, that doesn’t mean they shy away from Illinois athletes.

Traxler, unbeaten against instate foes this season, channeled offseason experience

against Demoss – of no relation to DeMoss, who punctuates his name differently – and seized control in the third period.

“I wrestled him before; I knew who he was,” Traxler said. “It didn’t bother me. Just staying in good position and making sure I was taking good shots.”

Marmion sophomore 138-pounder Anthony Cheloni – like DeMoss and Traxler a product of “The Barn” of Campton Hills-based SCN Youth Wrestling – finished as runner-up after a 5-4 loss to Lockport senior Shayne Oster.

Oster built a 4-2 advantage at the end of one period by staying aggressive against Cheloni (34-12), whom he edged in overtime at Harlem’s Dvorak tournament earlier this season.

“I knew it would be a real tough match,” Oster said. “I just wanted to go out there and get a lead early. I was able to do that.”

That prompted added urgency from Cheloni, a firsttime state qualifier who vaulted to this round by an upset of previously unbeaten Conant senior Bobby Alexander in Friday’s semifinals.

“I was trying to get back any point that I could and make it a match,” Cheloni said.

Marmion planned a Sunday workout to stay sharp for the coming week. Six athletes – including 145-pounder Mikey Callahan and third-place finishers A.J. Jaffe (132) and Trace Carello (160) – competed at the individual state tournament.

“This is incredible, you know,” Traxler said. “We had three in the finals, our two state champions. And six came down. Two out of six being state champions from this program, that’s huge. It’s fantastic.”

The Cadets had little difficulty puncturing ACC’s zone and taking advantage of size and strength advantages on the interior.

Other than two free throws, Pickard’s 18-point afternoon came almost exclusively via layups.

“They want for you to take longer shots,” said Pickard, who shot 8 for 10 from the floor. “We didn’t want to play

Slashing guard Jordan Glasgow led Marmion with 20 points, and his penetration and layups in transition further helped Marmion post 67 points despite a relatively modest pace of play.

“Their zone is so spread out, they’ll go get a guy at half court, so then that leaves a lot of space for other people to cut and to be open,” Glasgow said.

Glasgow helped Marmion bust the game open early in the fourth quarter, scoring on a driving layup, then a runout basket off a steal to put his team up, 57-43, and cap a 7-0 burst that began toward the end of the third quarter.

To go with that wine cellar a collector must also have the proper glasses, vintage corkscrews, aerators, bottle stoppers, tools and, of course, a decanter. But collectors of decanters are often not interested in wine, just in the many bottles and containers that are used to decant wine. Open a bottle, pour the contents into the decanter, let the sediment settle, then serve the wine. For centuries decanters have been glass bottles with long necks, but by the end of the 19th century, figural glass or pottery decanters became popular. Recent auctions have sold glass decanters with silver tops that are shaped like Bacchus, early musicians, dogs, waiters and even a walrus. Glass decanters shaped like large fish have been made since the 1900s. Royal Doulton made a decanter shaped like mysterious man in a clock for Sandeman products. And some modern liquor companies make figural decanters today for colleges and special events. Add to your enjoyment of wine with a decanter collection. A walrus-shaped decanter with gilt brass trim sold recently at a Neal auction in New Orleans for $1,434. *** Q: I inherited my great-grandmother’s Norwegian spinning wheel. The letters “TAD” are carved on the side and the date “1816” is painted on in black. The wheel is 22 inches in diameter and has 16 carved spokes. My great-grandparents brought it with “BEST IN THE MIDWEST OR ANYWHERE”

A: Spinning wheels date back to medieval times, but most found today are 100 to 200 years old. There are several different types. The most common is the Saxony Wheel, which has the wheel at one end and the flyer at the other end and usually has three legs. It’s the traditional wheel pictured in fairy tales. A Norwegian Wheel is a horizontal wheel similar to the Saxony. It may have three or four legs and is often ornately carved. The Castle Wheel is a vertical spinning wheel with the flyer above the wheel. The letters “TAD” could be the maker or the initials of the person it was made for. The date and provenance make your spinning wheel interesting. Most spinning wheels sell for $100 to $250.

They often are bought to use. *** Q: I’d like to know how to sell Hummel figurines. I inherited 24 figurines from my mother. Some still have the price stickers on them. Are they worth anything, and if so, how do I market them?

A: Hummel figurines aren’t as popular as they were years ago. As the older generation of collectors have died, large collections are coming on the market. Heirs are finding they are hard to sell and prices have dropped.

Although some rare figurines still sell at auctions for high prices (one sold for over $900), most are sold in groups, with prices as low as $5 or $10 per figurine. The older figurines bring better prices. Age can be determined by the trademark on the bottom of the figurine. *** Q: We have a Howdy Doody windup band made by Unique Art in 1950.

A: The Howdy Doody windup band originally came in a box labeled “Doin’ the Howdy Doody.” Howdy Doody and Buffalo Bob were characters in a children’s TV series that originally ran from 1947 to 1960. The series became popular with college students in the late 1970s when Buffalo Bob began to lecture on campuses.

The “New Howdy Doody Show” was produced from 1976 to 1977. This tin lithographed toy was made during the original series. The toy in good condition and in its original box sold for $741 at a recent auction. One without the box sold for $420.

*** Q: In 1954, my mother bought a new home and had furniture custom made. My bedroom dresser and desk was light wood with a white leatherlike front and gold drawer handles.

A: Reed & Barton made this butterfly whistle-pendant in the early 1970s.

Psychosocial treatment is critical for schizophrenia Dear Doctor K: There is a history of schizophrenia in my family. I’d like to learn more about it. Can it be treated?

Dear Reader: Schizophrenia is a long-lasting psychotic disorder.

People with the condition have a hard time recognizing reality, thinking logically and behaving naturally in social situations.

Having a parent or sibling with schizophrenia increases your risk of developing it.

The symptoms of schizophrenia are often defined as “positive” (remarkable because of their presence) or “negative” (remarkable because of their absence). Positive symptoms include: • Delusions – distorted thoughts or false beliefs. A delusional person may speak of people who aren’t real. She may imagine she is in communication with people who are dead. He may believe he is capable of impossible feats – like leaping tall buildings in a single bound.

• Hallucinations – hearing, seeing, touching, smelling or tasting things that aren’t there. The most common hallucinations involve hearing voices, music, noises like those made by machinery, or other sounds.

• Disorganized speech.

• Unusual movements or disorganized behavior.

Negative symptoms include: • An absence of much emotion – happy or sad. Just a flat, unexpres-

• Limited speech – great difficulty in carrying on a conversation.

• Trouble starting, continuing or completing any particular activity, including activities as simple as washing the dishes.

Many people with schizophrenia experience a steady decline of logical thinking, social skills and behavior. They can stop taking care of themselves – keeping clean, dressing properly, even combing or brushing their hair. These problems can interfere with work and personal relationships.

Positive symptoms tend to go through cycles where they get better and worse. Negative symptoms and cognitive problems are more constant.

People with schizophrenia are more likely to become depressed, to start drinking or abusing drugs, and to commit suicide.

The impact of the illness can be reduced by early and active treatment. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better chance there is to prevent its worst effects.

Treatment requires a combination of medication, psychological counseling and social support.

The major medications used to treat schizophrenia are called

antipsychotics. They are generally effective for treating the positive symptoms of schizophrenia.

If a medication does help, it is important to continue it even after symptoms get better. Without medication, there is a good chance that psychosis will return. Each recurring episode may be worse.

Psychosocial treatment is also essential. These treatments are given in addition to, not instead of, medications. The goal is to provide ongoing emotional and practical support, education about the illness and perspective on the symptoms of the illness. Therapists may provide advice about managing relationships and health. And they may teach skills to improve functioning and orientation to reality.

There are many types of psychosocial treatments. One approach is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Employment with on-the-job support and mental health services can also help.

We have more potent treatments for schizophrenia today than we did 50 years ago. Research is also bringing us closer to understanding what is going wrong in the brain. That’s what we need to know in order to cure this terrible illness.

Dr. Wallace: I’m amazed at the bonus contracts and salaries of professional baseball, football and basketball players.

Their paydays are not in the thousands; they are in the millions of dollars!

This does not seem fair.

My mom is a public school teacher and her yearly salary is just over $50,000. Many professional athletes earn that much just for playing in one game. Yesterday I read where a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox signed a four-year contract for $46 million. That’s a lot of money! Actually, it’s “peanuts” compared to the contract signed by Alex Rodriguez to play for the New York Yankees. All he signed for was a measly $275 million for 10 years to play a kid’s game!

Don’t get me wrong.

My mother is a single mom. We live in a small but nice house, and we have never missed a meal and her five-year-old car is very reliable.

But what I’m wondering is what in the world do these million-dollar athletes do with all their money. Do they give some to the poor or disadvantaged or do they just live the “high life” and spend most of it? – Nameless, Chicago Dear Nameless: The issue is simply one of social values. You can’t blame the athletes or performers for the enormous sums of money they make; all they’re doing is supplying a product the public wants. If stars earn too much, blame those who are willing to pay high-ticket prices to see them perform. High-paid celebrities aren’t themselves the problem. And many of them do donate a portion of their earnings.

But I do understand the point you are making.

The discrepancy is glaring. Maybe if enough people ask the questions you’re asking, our values will begin to shift, but don’t bet on it!

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16, and I have several friends that are 12 and 13, and they always ask a lot of questions. They think I’m easier to talk to than their parents are, so I give them a lot of advice, especially about sex.

Last week, the mother of one of these girls got mad at me and told me to stop hanging around with her daughter and to stop telling her things about sex. She also said that I must have a psychological problem for hanging around with much younger girls. I don’t really tell these girls about sex. I just answer their specific questions because they find it difficult to ask their mom about the subject.

Do you see anything wrong with having friends younger than I am and helping them? – Nameless, Nappanee, Indiana Dear Nameless: I’m sure you mean well, but your friends’ parents may be justifiably uneasy about your qualifications to answer their children’s questions about sex.

The next time they ask questions, you should urge these youngsters to discuss such matters with their parents. I also urge you to make new friends closer to your own age.

Note South’s bidding sequence. To make a takeout double, then, after partner advances with a minimum bid in a suit, to rebid shows a very strong hand: at least 18 high-card points (or a super 17).

Declarer starts with five potential losers in his hand: one heart, two diamonds and two clubs.

He has only eight top tricks: five spades, one heart and two clubs.

Perhaps South would think that he can get at least one more heart trick. And maybe clubs are 3-3, or the fourth round can be ruffed in the dummy. But if a finessing fanatic crosses to dummy with a trump and runs the heart queen, he will fail here. West takes the trick and returns, say, a trump.

Count the high-card points.

There are only 15 missing, and East has already produced the diamond queen. West must have the heart king. South should cash his heart ace and lead another heart. If West takes the trick, declarer has 10 tricks: five spades, three hearts and two clubs. Or, if West ducks, South can play three rounds of clubs to arrange a club ruff in the dummy.

Use the bidding to place missing key-cards and do not take a finesse that must lose.
