OUT AND ABOUT Chili cook-off at St. Charles church ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Episcopal Church announces its annual chili cook-off from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parish center.

The church is at 994 N. Fifth Ave. (Route 25), St. Charles. Prizes will be awarded to winners in two divisions: one for local firehouses showcasing their signature chilis and one for the general public. Professional chefs will judge the contest, along with attendees who can add their vote for $1 a ballot.

Admission is $3 for tasting of each chili, or $5 for a bowl of the house chili, cornbread and a drink. The entry fee for competitors is $20. Proceeds from the event will support the ministries of St. Charles Episcopal Church, with bonuses given to the competing firehouses for the amount of votes they earn.

Sign up for North Aurora CERT team NORTH AURORA – A Community Emergency Response Team training course begins in April in North Aurora.

The course is intended to teach citizens how to better cope with the aftermath of a disaster by training them in basic disaster response skills. The topics of the course are disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue operations, disaster psychology and team organization, and course review and disaster simulation. The free course will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, starting April 1 in the community room at the North Aurora Police Department, 200 S. Lincolnway.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Preference for admission into the course will be given to North Aurora residents.

Batavia extends celebration with championship rings

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia High School senior Dylan Ingersoll expects he will find any excuse to make his hands noticeable today.

Along with his teammates, the 17-year-old on Sunday night got a piece of jewelry he is eager to show off: his state championship ring.

“It’s pretty heavy, but that’s what you want,” Ingersoll, a wide receiver, said.

In a 34-14 win over Richards, the Bulldogs football team last November won the school’s first

state championship in program history.

Sunday, a spotlight in the school’s main gym shone on the banner declaring the team as 2013 IHSA state champions as the coaches and players were called to accept their Jostens ring.

Parent Jerry Shubert was among the parents waiting for their sons to finish collecting their ring and other commemorative items, including posters, a drawstring bag and bracelet.

Shubert said his son – a junior – definitely wanted a ring and would like to repeat the team’s success next year.

“He wants two,” Shubert said.

Head coach Dennis Piron said the teens weren’t thinking about rings when they were playing.

“Now that they’ve got them, they’re very excited about them,” Piron said.

He encouraged the players to wear the rings to school today.

He told the players that representatives from Jostens would be available to address any issues, such as an incorrect spelling or rings that were too big or too small – a problem Ingersoll didn’t have.

“It feels right,” he said.

Inside the book Storyacting combines storytelling with theater

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The stage was set with children’s books and stacks of props – animal heads, aprons and characters on signs – all part of what professional storyteller Paddy Lynn calls storyacting, the combination of storytelling and acting.

Lynn led a group of two dozen children through four well-known classics Saturday in a program at the St. Charles Public Library.

Children played the parts of foxes, wolves, mice and bear cubs in “Two Bear Cubs: A Miwok Legend from California’s Yosemite Valley” by Robert D. San Souci.

They played vegetables and other ingredients for author Ann McGovern’s “Stone Soup,” as well as a variety of woodland creatures for “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. They filled out the cast of characters for “Gingerbread Girl”

by Lisa Campbell Ernst, where the long-ago-eaten Gingerbread Boy’s younger sister outsmarts the fox.

In explaining her program, Lynn said she loved

reading stories as a kid, but wanted to “get inside the book.”

“I wanted to be the characters inside the book,” Lynn said.

And so she combined storytelling with theater in each tale as children wore the ears of mice or rabbits, aprons of onions and carrots or held masks on sticks and roared like bears or oinked like pigs.

As parts of each story developed, the children and parents in the audience were included in madcap sound effects from blowing snow in a blizzard to bubbling soup on

a stove to stomping their feet for knocks on a door.

The program is 14th in a twice-a-year series that was established by the William Russell family in memory of Karen G. Russell and continues with a grant from the Illinois State Library.

Larry Flachmeyer, whose mother was Karen Russell, said he was gratified to see the program as fulfilling his late mother’s memory. Flachmeyer’s own children, William, 12 and Edie, 10, were among the participants.

“I’m delighted that it continues,” Flachmeyer said.

“We’ve been to each and every one of them. This one was very engaging. The kids loved it.”

Lynn said she hoped the children come away with a desire to pick up the featured books and read them, an appreciation for acting and for public speaking.

“I hope ... every time they are on stage, they have another opportunity to feel they are comfortable in front of the audience,” Lynn said.

“Every opportunity they have to do that, I think, is a good one.”

ST. CHARLES – A fast food joint in St. Charles is closing temporarily for construction.

McDonald’s, 1915 W. Main St., had signs on its doors last weekend that stated it would be closing Sunday with plans to reopen in June.

“After 50-plus years, we will be closing the restaurant on Sunday night,” the message from Yanni Management stated. “We will be rebuilding in the same location to better serve you.

We will be reopening in the early part of June. Please visit one of our other locations located in St. Charles on [East Main Street] or in Wasco on Route 64. Thank you for all of your support and look forward to seeing you in June.”

The St. Charles City Council approved McDonald’s plans last May. According to city documents, McDonald’s plans to demolish the existing building and construct a new 5,234-square-foot restaurant

Jimenez climbs state podium for fourth time

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – Marmion senior Johnny Jimenez earned his first IHSA state wrestling title as a 103-pound freshman in Class 2A. That was three years and three weight classes ago, in which time the Cadets also jumped to 3A. The University of Illinois’ showcase indoor sports venue also switched names in the interim, adding to the litany of changes to occur since Jimenez started making himself comfortable here.

On Saturday, the constant emerged for a fourth and final time.

A St. Charles resident now competing at 126 pounds, Jimenez ascended the top of a podium again, the latest trip courtesy of a 5-1 victory against Glenbard North’s Jon Marmolejo in the finals.

“Those last few seconds were the best seconds of my life,” Jimenez said. “Knowing after that second takedown that I finally did it, it really was so heartwarming and I got really emotional because I was so happy with everything I’ve done these past four years.”

The Wisconsin-bound Jimenez, 42-3 this season and 162-10 in his career, became just the 11th wrestler in state history to earn a fourth career title. A few minutes later, 132-pounders Josh Alber of Dakota (1A) and Jered Cortez of Glenbard North joined him as the 12th and 13th.

Jimenez has ties to both, having been Cortez’s Marmion teammate in 2010-11 while enjoying a friendly rivalry with career unbeaten Alber for nearly a decade. The mutual admiration – like the standing ovations at State Farm Center (nee Assembly Hall) – was bountiful. Especially from Alber, the only in-state athlete to defeat Jimenez in his junior and senior seasons.

“Oh, man. Yeah,” said Alber, a Northern Iowa recruit. “I’ve been wrestling Johnny since I was in third grade. We’ve been battling back and forth. You know, I’ve got the best of him the last two, but I have a ton of respect for him. He’s the greatest competitor there is. He’s a gamer.

And I can’t wait to see how he does in college. I’m glad that he’s going 125 and I’m going 133 so, you know, we can cheer for each other now.”

Aurora Central Catholic senior Eddie Gonzalez, the Chronicle area’s other finals competitor, lost the 1A title match at 285.

“He was able to shoot on me and power in and pin me,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez (31-7) seemed to come to grips with the result quickly while keeping a pulse on perspective. He became ACC’s first state placer since 2007, when older brother Jesus took fourth in Class A at 285.

John “JB” Winkle, uncle of Batavia freshman Seth Winkle, was the Chargers’ only other runner-up, taking second at 155 in 1979.

“I’m really happy for what I’ve done so far, what I did with my ca-

reer,” Gonzalez said. “It feels good.”

Six of Marmion’s nine qualifiers left as place-winners. Trace Carello (152), Nathan Traxler (182) and Lucas Warren (220) each finished fourth, Nick Ferraro was fifth at 170 and Josh Meyers took sixth at 195.

Ferraro, a senior from Elburn, earned Marmion’s lone victory of the consolation finals with a 16-8 major decision against Mt. Carmel’s Dru Worker. The Cadets hope the result is a harbinger of things to come; Marmion faces Mt. Carmel in a team dual sectional Tuesday at Marist.

“I’m looking forward to wrestling him again,” Ferraro said.

The Cadets defeated the Caravan, 40-30, on their senior night then, winning nine of 10 contested bouts. Marmion forfeit four matches, but since has returned to full strength.

Less than optimal success at individual state – by program standards, anyway – leaves the Cadets even more primed to improve on last season’s runner-up team finish.

Marmion received a big boost just before the state series when Warren returned from a lower back injury that sidelined him for much of the season.

The sophomore from Sugar Grove started his freshman season strong before a back fracture kept him out for the stretch run.

“I’m excited. I’m real excited. I’m looking forward to helping my team out since I missed the whole dual season already,” Warren said. “I’m glad I could be back for it. I’m looking to help them. I think we’ll go deep.”

Jimenez relishes the chance to extend an already decorated career.

He wasn’t but a few minutes removed from defeating Marmolejo – whose only two losses this season came to his friedly rival – when he was talking about Mt. Carmel.

“Back on the mat tomorrow,” he said. The Cadets planned to stay overnight Saturday and work out Sunday at Illinois’ Huff Hall, where Jimenez’s older brother, Nico, a former Cadets state champ, competes as a member of the Illini.

Opponents realize what they’re getting into when they face Johnny Jimenez.

Glenbard East senior Dayton Olson, who pushed him in the third period of a 10-6 quarterfinal loss Friday, also was Jimenez’s first victim en route to his 120-pound title in 2013.

Olson delivers a scouting report that sounds all too familiar to most who have faced Jimenez, who won two IKWF state titles before entering high school.

“He doesn’t feel as strong as other wrestlers, but his technique is on point,” Olson said. “His technique is perfect.”

That attribute showed up again in the title bout. Leading, 3-1, in the closing seconds, Jimenez averted trouble one last time when Marmolejo attempted to clutch Jimenez’s upper body and go for a throw. Jimenez countered the move for a clinching takedown.

“I lowered my hips,” Jimenez said, “and wrestled smart.”

Ginsberg concludes eventful weekend

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com PALATINE – The scoring system for the IHSA girls gymnastics state finals makes moving up the team standings a tough task.

The only way team scores improve is if individual competitors better their scores from the previous day, making it incredibly difficult for teams to leapfrog other squads in the standings.

On Saturday, the Geneva and St. Charles co-op teams each maintained their Friday positions, taking home fifth and sixth positions in the state, respectively.

It would be a tough act to follow for Geneva and its freshman wunderkind Claire Rose Ginsberg. Ginsberg won the state all-around championship Friday with a 37.875, becoming the first freshman since 2005 to win the state title.

Ginsberg was the youngest competitor left in each of the events and narrowly missed top-3 finishes in the vault (9.55) and balance beam (9.45), settling for fourth in each event.

The freshman saved her best for last though, turning

in a fantastic performance on the floor exercise. Ginsberg’s 9.575 was good for third place and a spot atop the state podium.

“It was exciting to place in individual events; I was confident coming in after yesterday,” Ginsberg said.

“We were kind of disappointed because I think we could have done better as a team.

We messed up yesterday and I think we came in here hoping we were going to get one of the top two spots. But it’s OK, things happen and hopefully we’ll be back next year.”

Geneva coach Kim Hostman beamed with the thought of what the next three seasons could be like with Ginsberg.

It was Hostman who purposely deceived Ginsberg on Friday, telling the freshman that only team results were counted and individual accolades weren’t awarded until Saturday.

“I decided to make that choice not to explain to her how it works as far as individuals,” Hostman said. “So she had no idea the all-around event was going on yesterday.

She thought she was hitting for the team. I told her that she was the all-around champion last night and she said

she should have been more nervous.”

Vikings stalwart Dominique Brognia made her final performance of her career in the floor exercise.

It was a tough week leading up to the state meet for the senior as she hurt her wrist early in the week and also dealt with a death in the family. Despite a somewhat lower score – 9.075 – for her standards, Brognia was upbeat when reflecting on her four-year career.

“I was very excited for everything even though my hand was hurting. Dr. Ginsberg helped me out too with realigning it and I got therapy done to it, too,” Brognia said. “We ended fine. I wish it was top three, but there is nothing we can do now. Before last year we never been to state so I think this is awesome that we made it two years in a row.”

St. Charles senior Kelly Gorniak finished up her high school career by placing fifth in the floor exercise with a 9.425. The score helped St. Charles stay in sixth as a team.

Dear Abby: It absolutely frosts me when parents head for the toy department so their children will have something to play with while they shop. Then, after the kids have spent time drooling, teething, sneezing, etc., they leave the dirty toys at the end of the aisle for someone else to buy.

Yesterday I saw a child sucking on the paw of a stuffed animal. When I commented on how that must be the child’s favorite toy, the mother said it wasn’t theirs – she was just keeping the little boy quiet while she shopped.

Last week I stood behind someone in the checkout line.

In her child’s mouth was the ribbon from a Mylar balloon.

When the mother finished loading her groceries onto the conveyor belt, she said, “Time to put this back now!”

It’s my pet peeve: First the germs they get from sucking on this stuff, then the ones everyone else is exposed to from the child. And on top of that there’s the stealing, because I have seen children break toys. This is wrong, and we’re all paying for it. Why can’t these parents throw something in the diaper bag before they leave home? – Put It Down! In Virginia Dear Put It Down: Because the parents aren’t doing their job – they are forgetful or lazy, and have no consideration for the store owners or other shoppers. Sadly, parents like the ones you have described raise children who are just like themselves.

While your husband’s attempts at foreplay are beyond clumsy and ineffective, I can’t help but feel some sympathy for him because it appears you have him on a starvation diet. How long this can continue for either of you is uncertain. Rather than try to charge harassment, why not schedule an appointment with your gynecologist and find out WHY having sex is painful for you. It is not supposed to be, and your doctor may be able to help you resolve the problem.

Marriage counseling might also help, because it’s clear you and your husband aren’t communicating on any meaningful level.

If these problems are not resolvable, you can’t continue living like this and neither can he. Because your family isn’t nearby and you have no transportation, call or write them and let them know you may need their help to return.

Oscar Wilde said, “One should always play fairly when one has the winning cards.”

That is reasonable. But when one is in potential danger, falsecarding at the right moment may make the difference between success and failure.

In this deal, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest heart and East puts up the queen?

South starts with six top tricks: four spades and two hearts. There are four more available in clubs. Is there any danger? Yes, if East has the club ace and thinks to shift to a high diamond, with West having that ace hovering over declarer’s king, South could lose one club and at least four diamonds.

However, declarer does have the advantage that defenders “always return partner’s suit” in no-trump. Still, how can declarer push East firmly in that direction?

South must take the first trick with his heart king, not the ace. To win the first trick in no-trump with an ace is an advertisement that you are not worried about that suit, because if your only high card were the ace, you would have made a holdup play, not taken the ace until, probably, the third round of the suit. Then declarer plays a club. It would be almost psychic of East to find the diamond-10 shift.

Job Description Work directly with independent contractors to ensure the daily effective, efficient and timely delivery of newspapers and other related materials.

Assist in delivering open/down routes in geographic area Ensure customer service goal is attained in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Resolve service and interpersonal issues through personal contact with customers, carriers, and Distribution Center Associates.

Recruit, screen, select, contract, advise and terminate contracts, when necessary, of independent contract carriers.

Maintain responsibility for the opening and closing procedures and operations of the distribution center, route management, and the proper distribution of all newspapers, inserts and other related materials to the contract carriers.

Analyze process and distribute carrier and district mail/reports.

Prepare and submit department reports and paperwork in a timely manner using Microsoft Word / Excel programs.

Ensure all routes are covered regardless of independent contract carrier issues or situations such as car problems, illness, weather, etc.

Redeliver to customers newspapers, Vacation Pacs or any other items as required.

Evaluate routes to determine rate and number of subscribers.

Analyze, design and implement formation of routes on an ongoing basis. The objective being to meet service criteria in the most cost effective manner.

Administer all single copy sales procedures.

Report to work on time (1:00 AM) and as scheduled.

Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills Good working knowledge of Word, Excel and e-mail.

Ability to use manual pallet jacks Ability to use office machines such as scanner, copier, calculator, computer and fax and various communication equipment.

Ability to read and execute a route list.

Demonstrate ability to read, write and speak English clearly, effectively and concisely with employees, customers, carriers, supervisors, managers and publisher.

Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Required Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent. Some college preferred but not required.

Work experience that demonstrates competency in managing multiple priorities and includes delivery of newspapers.

Must have reliable vehicle, proof of insurance and a valid driver's license.
