Orchid lovers converge at show

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com WHEATON – The potting shed at the Batavia Orchid Society’s annual sale and show Sunday also could be considered a MASH unit for the exotically beautiful tropical flowers.

Bob Keck of St. Charles – calling himself the “Potting Shed Demo-Guru Guy” – and Suki Nax of Naperville did first-aid for orchids that were over-watered or otherwise accidentally ill-treated, as well as just general instructions on repotting.

“I have the skill of being able to talk to people about how to repot their orchids,” Keck said, explaining his moniker. “I can explain how to properly repot and care for their orchids. We’re repotting orchids and showing people what was bad and how to improve.”

For the uninitiated, orchids don’t grow in dirt – they grow up high on the bark of trees in the forest, Keck said, and are

“They’re from all over the tropics around the world,” Keck said, ticking off the countries where orchids come from: Africa, South America, Central America and Asia.

In addition to the potting shed, hundreds of orchids were on display for winning prizes, and for sale by various vendors at the event held this weekend at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton.

“I have always wanted to own an orchid and I don’t own one at the present time,” Franklin said. “I am amazed at the variety of orchids that I never knew existed. I’m going to join the [Batavia] Orchid Society just to learn more about them before I buy one and accidentally kill it.”

Franklin said when she and her husband lived in Iowa, she grew foxgloves and lady slippers, sparking her interest.

“I just love that type of flower,” Franklin said. “I assume they’re related somehow – I mean they look similar.”

Batavia Orchid Society member Cheryl Erins of Three Rivers, Michigan, said January through March is orchid blooming season, which is why the shows are held despite frigid Midwestern winters.

“After that, they go into a rest period where the roots and bulbs will soak up as much energy as they can and store it for next time,” Erins said.

Geneva Girl Scouts go sledding for charity

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – About 30 Girl Scouts on Saturday went sledding at the Fabyan Forest Preserve for a good cause.

Representing various local troops, the girls participated in the supply drive, Sled for the Horses, to benefit Casey’s Safe Haven near Elburn. The girls collected about 25 rolls of paper towels, 10 pounds of carrots, 20 pounds of sweet potatoes and a couple bottles of olive oil before they went sledding by the Fabyan Windmill.

The supplies will help the horses and ponies at Casey’s Safe Haven, a nonprofit horse rescue. Brownie Troop 45, which visited Casey’s in November, hosted the event as a service project, said Autumn Caviness, Brownie Troop 45 leader and troop coordinator at Williamsburg Elementary School in Geneva.

Troop 45 member Gianna Valenti also was with her family at the event. Valenti helped send an Elsa doll from the movie “Frozen” down the hill during a Girl Scout cookies box race against three other dolls. The Merida doll from the movie “Brave” won.

Fire officials investigate cause of morning fire St. Charles Township ranch home sustained $20,000 in damages KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A fire that caused about $20,000 in damages at a single-family ranch home early Saturday remains under investigation, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the incident. Fire crews first received a report of a possible structure fire at 3:41 a.m. Saturday in the 36W800 block of Middlecreek Lane in St. Charles Township, according to a Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District news release.

Upon arrival at 3:49 a.m., firefighters saw smoke from outside the home and found a developing fire in a small attic area above a bathroom, according to the release. Fire crews confirmed all occupants of the house escaped.

Firefighters reached the fire, extinguished it with a handline and found the fire was limited to the bathroom and the attic area above the bathroom, the release states.

The fire was under control by 4 a.m., according to the release. The provided damage estimate was $10,000 of property damage and $10,000 of damage to the contents.

The fire had burned completely through several attic joists, the release states.

Fire crews ventilated and cleaned up the area, but lots of drywall and insulation that had to be torn down to get to the fire remains, said district fire Chief Greg Benson in a phone interview Saturday afternoon.

The house’s smoke detectors did not immediately alert the residents since the fire was located above the detectors, according to the release.

The homeowner said he woke up, smelled smoke and called 911 right away, the release states.

DeMoss, a 170-pound Marmion junior, jubilantly achieved his objective at last, completing his run to the crown with a 5-4 victory against Willowbrook freshman Jack Jessen in the championship match.

Geneva lands in second place in state

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com PALATINE – When all the tumbling, flipping, running and jumping ended, the lights dimmed and the stage illuminated the Geneva girls gymnastics team, which finished Saturday night’s IHSA girls gymnastics state meet as the runner-up.

The Vikings finished with a team score of 147, holding off third-place Fremd, which finished with a score of 146.625.

The Prairie Ridge co-op was team champions with a team score of 150.

Geneva sophomore Claire Ginsberg finished 10th in the all-around Friday and was unable to defend her title from last season’s freshman campaign.

But the sophomore bounced back Saturday, medaling with a second-place finish on the vault and a share of third-place in the floor exercise.

The valuable points she earned were a major part of

Geneva’s second-place finish, something Ginsberg credited to excellent team chemistry.

“It’s really exciting,” Ginsberg said. “We’re making history today and we just have a great bond on our team. We have great team chemistry.

We knew coming in that we had a chance to medal and we did. We really couldn’t be any more excited.”

Geneva coach Kim Hostman got the most out of a young Vikings team, with only two seniors and eight underclassmen, accomplishing another goal in the process.

“Our goal was to get a 147 at state so we knew we had the potential with some lower scores on the balance beam and Claire (Ginsberg) on bars,” Hostman said. “So the focus was to get the 147 since we knew that would hold off Fremd, so that’s what we did and that’s what we accomplished.”

“The work that we’ve put in this season has been amazing

and it paid off today,” she added. “Our program has thrived throughout the last couple of years but it’s really nice to finish in the top three. Our goal was to be right there and we’ve worked really hard all season so we’re really pleased with the outcome.”

Claire Ginsberg finished second on the vault with a score of 9.75, bested only by DeKalb’s Aleah Lemon, who won with a 9.825.

Ginsberg helped Geneva hang on to second place heading to the uneven bars with a total score of 146.75. Prairie Ridge led with a 149.35 while Fremd was third with a 146.625.

Ginsberg’s 9.5 in the uneven bars tied for sixth best, with a three-way tie for first between Prairie Ridge’s Rachael Underwood and Maddie Solka and Lyons’ Kelsy Kurfirst.

But Ginsberg’s score did help open up a larger lead on Fremd, which lacked a com-

petitor in the event.

Rolling Meadows junior Kelly Johnson came into the balance beam final with the highest preliminary score and set the bar high in the final, posting a 9.625. With two competitors to Fremd’s none in the event, Geneva continued to earn separation after solid routines from senior Grace Ginsberg and sophomore Julia Grootens.

Grace Ginsberg’s routine earned her a 9.425, temporarily good for third place with three competitors left. But Wheaton co-op’s Lenna Klein knocked her from that spot in the next routine, posting a 9.55 as she climbed to her second-place finish.

It was Grace Ginsberg’s last routine of her career, but the points went a long way toward making it a memorable one.

“I was so nervous going in but I was calm and I’ve been doing routine after routine all week long so I was nervous but I was prepared,” she said.

“That was my last beam routine ever so I just wanted to have fun and show it off and it went well.”

Grootens fell early in her routine but recovered to earn a 9.05 and finished ninth.

It was the first season with the team for the sophomore, and sending the seniors out on top while gaining experience has the program in a good spot, she said.

“The entire season was super exciting and really team-oriented,” Grootens said.

“Everybody worked together and I could tell that we were all really strong this year and it was going to be a great state meet. Everybody gave it their all, and it showed.

“I think we’re just going to get even stronger. Losing two of our seniors is going to be tough but we have a lot of strong girls that just came this year and who knows who is going to come next year so I think we’re just going to keep improving.”

“It was a very competitive meet today, the best the sectional for all the teams we’ve had,” Saints coach Joe Cabel said. “DeKalb made a good run today. I just know that as a team we had a great effort by everybody. It was a great day to be a Saint.”

ST. CHARLES – Three pool records were broken at Saturday’s IHSA St. Charles East Boys Swimming Sectional.

Another standard, the St. Charles schools’ dominance of sectionals over the past 20 years, narrowly withstood the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op’s challenge.

DeKalb held a one-point lead over St. Charles North at the start of 400-yard freestyle relay, the last event of the meet. Host school East was in third, trailing by eight.

The North Stars won the event with a time of 3:09.99, beating out the DeKalb quartet by less than half a second at 3:10.27 to win the sectional.

East placed third in the race.

The final standing were in the same order. North finished with 241 points to DeKalb’s 236. East took third with 226.

“It’s been an awesome meet for us today. It is probably the sweetest sectional championship I’ve had personally as a coach,” North coach Rob Rooney said. “I had four guys I knew I could count on.

DeKalb had a great relay, but I would battle with my boys any day of the year.”

“Oh yeah, we were nervous before the race, but we thought we could pull it out,” said North junior Joe Myhre, one of the four swimmers Rooney was relying on. “We were pretty pumped going into it.”

“I actually used to hate that race,” Boryk said about the 500 freestyle. “I love it now.

Just doing well in it changed my mind.”

East’s Michael Milosch and Jonh Cranfill also qualified with third and fourth place in the 100 butterfly.

Milosch, a freshman, completed the event in 50.86 seconds while Cranfill turned in a time of 52.72 seconds.

Rounding out the Saints’ individual contingent is John Tarpey. He took fourth in the 100 backstroke with a state-qualifying time of 52.36 seconds.

Batavia’s Garrett Clasen will be the lone West Chicago-Batavia co-op representative at New Trier. The freshman’s time of 1:54.94 in the 200 medley earned him a second-place finish and a state berth. The co-op finished fifth (137.5) behind the Wheaton coop (213).

“He’s a highly motivated young man,” said Nicole Cleveland, the West Chicago-Batavia coach. “He knew the expectation was to make it to state meet and he did that with hands down.”

Wheaton swimmers set two new pool records. Their 200 medley relay team won the event with a time of 1:35.15.

Dear Abby: My social circle includes a woman who has problems in restaurants. Something comes over her in this environment – either the waiter is ignoring her, the order is taking too long, she wants to tweak the menu to her liking, the cost is too high or there’s a mistake on the bill. There is no end to it.

One night she didn’t like the salad, so she picked up bits of it and tossed them on the table. Needless to say, no one wants to go out with her anymore. Her husband, however, is a great guy. When we mentioned this to him, he replied, “You’ve noticed it, too?”

She is strong-willed in most things, but the restaurant scene is her extreme.

She may have OCD, be easily frustrated or be displacing anger or frustration about something else onto the servers who cannot defend themselves.

Frankly, the woman sounds like a pain in the posterior, and because she makes a habit of making those around her uncomfortable, I’m having trouble understanding why you continue to socialize with her and her husband. Many people wouldn’t. Perhaps the husbands can arrange to see him socially without her being present.

Dear Abby: I am a divorced woman with a teenage daughter. I maintain a good relationship with my ex-husband and his family, and still consider them my family.

The problem is, my ex and our daughter have a strained relationship, mostly because he makes little effort to spend time with her. He doesn’t attend her school functions, and most of the time when she’s with him he’s sleeping or watching TV. She is also sick of the multiple girlfriends that cycle in and out of his life. He doesn’t realize how much these things affect her.

She has asked me not to make her see him anymore. She’s 15, and I’m unsure if the law allows her to make that decision, but I think it’s unwise and she would regret it later. I also worry that everyone in the family will blame me, and my relationship with them will be strained.

I don’t know if I should just tell him she won’t be coming to his house anymore or if I should continue to make her go. I’m not sure he really cares. If you have and nothing has changed, then I don’t think you should force your daughter to go any longer. But check with a lawyer to be sure about the law in your state.

However, before we get to the play of today’s deal, look only at the North hand. With both sides vulnerable, South opens two spades, showing a good six-card suit and 6-10 high-card points.

After West passes, what should North respond?

After you have decided, look at all 52 cards. How can South get home in four spades after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, North must bid four spades, not three no-trump.

This deal shows why. If East guesses to take the first spade trick in no-trump, the South hand will be worth zero tricks. Even if East ducks one round of spades, three no-trump has no chance.

In four spades, South might have to guess the trump split. He wins the first trick with dummy’s club king, leads a spade to his queen and continues with the spade king. If East ducks, South must not lead another trump.

Instead, he should play a heart to dummy’s ace, ruff a heart, cross to dummy with a diamond, ruff a heart, return to dummy with a diamond, cash the club ace and lead another heart. Here, he cannot go wrong. But if spades were 3-3, he would have to guess who had cleverly ducked his ace twice. If East, South must ruff with his spade jack; if West, South must ruff with his spade seven. If he gets it wrong, he should congratulate his opponent.
