Geneva Film Festival heads to Dodson Place WHAT: More than 40 films from across the globe will hit the big screen in March as part of the seventh annual Geneva Film Festival. Amusing, amazing, extraordinary juncos GOOD NATURED Pam Otto My friends make fun of me sometimes because, they say, I’m easily amused.

I guess I really can’t argue with them, since it seems like there’s rarely a time when I’m not amused – or amazed – by one or another elements of our fantastic natural world.

I’ve stayed up until 2 a.m. watching a male grass spider gingerly woo a potential mate.

I’ve plopped down on the sidewalk to watch an ant lug home a crumb – a feat that’s the equivalent of a human carrying school bus.

And I’ve pulled the car over to the side of the road to watch a kestrel hover over a spot in a field, then dive down to capture and consume a luckless vole.

(Make that luckless and leaky. Voles mark their trails with urine and feces.

Kestrels use their keen vision, which can perceive the near-ultraviolet part of the light spectrum, to follow those UV-reflecting urine marks straight to their next meal. A-mazing.)

Lately, though, in the midst of this winter we won’t soon forget, I’ve become increasingly enamored of juncos – those little migrants from the north that many folks refer to as snowbirds.

From November to March, they are daily visitors to our bird feeders here at Hickory Knolls, as well as the shrubs and trees of my own backyard.

These birds and their antics are endless sources of amusement and amazement.

Here in the Tri-Cities, we typically see the slate-colored junco.

True to its name, it has a dark gray back, along with a light belly.

Males tend to be darker than females, sometimes almost black, while females have a brownish cast.

But if you travel, you may be aware of other juncos.

Although they are members of the same species as our slate-colored birds, Junco hyemalis, these other groups exhibit a tremendous amount of geographic variation.

Out west, you may see Oregon juncos (identified by a dark head or “hood,” brown back and rufous, nearly orange flanks); pink-sided juncos; white-winged juncos; gray-headed juncos; or redbacked juncos.

Whether you’re watching juncos from a vacation veranda or in your own backyard, pay special attention to their behavior. For little birds, they have a lot to offer.

Because they’re at the small end of the bird-size spectrum, juncos are vulnerable to predation.

And, like many other birds in the same boat, juncos have developed several means of protection.

For one, they form flocks.

Feeding within a flock means that there are many eyes scanning the skies; individual birds can, overall, spend more time feeding and less time watching.

Another advantage is that, should a predator strike, the odds favor survival for the majority of the group.

That might be of little comfort to the victim that was caught unaware but of benefit to the flock as a

whole.

If, while watching flocking behavior in your juncos, you also happen to be observing them at a bird feeder, you can see yet another neat junco-ism: their pecking order.

Males are dominant over females, and older birds trump younger ones.

Even if you’re not 100 percent sure of the differences between males and females, I’ll bet you can sort it out just by watching who gets to feed first and last.

If you, like me, find yourself fascinated by juncos, guess what? We’re not the only ones.

Scientists across the country have latched onto the Junco genus as a

near-perfect study subject for a variety of research interests: Genetics. Migration.

Hormones and physiology.

Evolution.

And now, filmmakers too have been captivated by the junco and its charms.

“The Ordinary, Extraordinary Junco” is an engaging, 88-minute documentary produced by a team of cinematographers and biologists from Indiana University.

“Juncos are easily observable by millions of people daily,” says IU researcher Jonathon Atwell, one of the film’s creators. “Depending on where you are, chances are good that you can watch this film and then go see or hear a junco on your way to work or school.”

Here at Hickory Knolls, we’d like to give you just that opportunity. From 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, along with our friends at Kane County Audubon, we will be cohosting a free screening of “The Ordinary, Extraordinary Junco.”

A slide presentation of junco facts compiled by KCA president Bob Andrini will be followed by three select segments from the film.

We’ll also provide time for discussion where you can have your junco questions answered and share your junco stories.

This event is the seventh annual dinner and auction to support Field of Dreams’ horse facilities in St. Charles and Batavia.

Twelve-year-old comedian gets chance to show he’s ‘Got Talent’

welve-year-old Trevor Burke has been on camera before, but never like this.

Today, Burke is scheduled to go before a full TV crew and studio audience at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N.J., for a taped audition for the NBC reality show “America’s Got Talent,” his father Joseph Burke said.

He and other hopefuls will try to get the green light from the show’s celebrity judges to advance in the competition in the hopes of earning fame and the $1 million prize.

Burke, a sixth-grader at Wredling Middle School in St. Charles, gets 90 seconds to do part of his stand-up comedy routine that he has honed over the last few years. Even though famous faces like Howard Stern and Heidi Klum are expected to be watching him, he doesn’t think he’ll get too nervous.

“Even though I’m still just a kid, I do know what I’m doing,” Burke said. “Definitely more than when I started out.”

Burke, a West Chicago resident, has come a long way in just a few short years. He first got into comedy by telling jokes at a talent show in 2010 while he was a third-grader at Norton Creek Elementary School in West Chicago.

When that became a success, he began to try his bit at open mic performances in Chicago and Milwaukee.

Burke’s routine sticks to what he knows – his parents, teachers, school and gaming.

He also has his share of inappropriate material like most comics, but he said he won’t use that for the taping.

Helping Burke along the way is his father, who’s also his manager. He’s the one that helps Burke refine his material. The elder Burke also filled out the lengthy paperwork that “America’s Got Talent” requires in order for people to be considered for the show.

Contestants can get on the show by either auditioning online or going to an open call audition.

Joseph Burke said he turned in the paperwork in October, and then earlier this month a producer for the series called to ask if Burke was still interested in putting his son on the show.

“I’m extremely proud of him,” Joseph Burke said.

“He’s on a very fast track.”

That track will still include school and homework assignments, which Burke said he tries to complete before traveling to work on a project.

He has appeared in 17 short films, three feature-length films and two music videos.

Burke admits that sometimes being away from his mom and friends is hard, but he’s already learned to make sacrifices.

“I miss some stuff, I definitely do ... but work is work.

I have a lot of fun,” Burke said.

At least one Chicago-area comic, Dobie Maxwell, thinks Burke will have staying power. Maxwell tours nationally and has performed on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

Likability is more important than being funny, and Burke has that, Maxwell said.

Similar to Maxwell’s TV appearance, Burke will have the opportunity to reach millions of viewers and gain credibility quickly.

“This will give him a career,” Maxwell said of Burke.

Instead of being known as the Geneva Mothers Club – as it was for 70 years – the name change reflects a move to a broader membership base and a concentration of its volunteer and fundraising efforts on key areas of concern, such as hunger, health and wellness and education.

To kick off this name change, the club is hosting a “Little Black Dress Celebration” from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva.

“This is an exciting time be a part of Geneva Women’s Club,” member Susan Fandel said. “We appreciate our past and look forward to expanding our membership and building an organization that will thrive well into the future.”

Local women are invited to put on their favorite little black dresses, invite their

Keeping 911 tapes public stops gov’t from hiding info Journalists and politicians alike are occasionally accused of playing emotions to manipulate a certain reaction, and in some cases the criticism is warranted.

We’re hoping state Sen. Bill Cunningham’s proposed legislation to exempt 911 calls from the Illinois Freedom of Information Act is just a misguided notion instead of outright manipulation, but Cunningham, D-Chicago, is wrong either way.

The legislation is a reaction to the release of 911 tapes from the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, which Cunningham found to be a violation of “personal privacy.”

The broadcasting of the 911 calls, and many other 911 calls, was certainly a grave ethical issue for journalists.

Many news outlets wrestled with the difficult matter, coming to different conclusions. NBC, for example,

decided not to air any of the recordings. CNN aired portions but also covered the ethical dilemma.

There can be, and are, journalistic reasons why the public should hear 911 recordings in many instances. Obviously, they are used in court proceedings for a reason. They have evidentiary value, and Cunningham’s legislation would allow the release of such records if they are used in court.

But this legislation and other proposals like it that seek to shield records from the public are less about journalism than they are about the government’s right to hide information.

If media outlets choose to exploit sensitive information without editorially sound reasons, then the public can judge them for that and they should expect a backlash. But that’s the viewer’s decision, not the government’s.

You might not like a particular news outlet or journalist, but there are thousands of them – most of whom try to operate under a code of principles.

Ask yourself whether you trust all Illinois government agencies more than any journalist or member of the public before considering whether exempting 911 calls from the Freedom of Information Act or any entire category of information is a good idea.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Meeting our obligations To the Editor: The House of Representatives passed a bill increasing the allowed national debt on Feb. 11. Even if the deficit is coming down, which it is, it is absolutely essential that we meet our obligations. A default would have a devastating effect on the credit worthiness of government securities.

Janet Yellen, the new chairman of the Federal Reserve, has said that a default would be a catastrophe. Our currency is regarded internationally as the reserve currency in the world. That is why many of the major countries hold our securities, because they are the safest. You Republicans who are investors might consider what effect a default would have on the stock market.

President Obama had stated there would be no negotiations with the House. They were responsible for the spending bills that were passed, and they had to pay the costs. After some delay, Speaker John Boehner called for the vote, and it passed with 221 votes. Almost 200 Democrats voted yes and only 28 Republicans.

Our congressman from the 14th District, Mr. Randy Hultgren, voted no. In the last vote on the debt ceiling, he was the only congressman in Illinois to vote no.

Sen. Ted Cruz from Texas had threatened to filibuster in the Senate, but the final vote was adequate to secure passage. Imagine, what it would be like if he was elected president with opinions like that.

When they’re off, there’s no pay I’m calling in regards to the teacher who called in and said their salaries are divided into 12 months. Some people go to work, and when they’re off, they don’t get paid. There are a lot of people who don’t get paid if they don’t work.

He was serving the community and protecting me from a possible heart attack from shoveling the heavy, wet snow. To the wonderful, caring St. Charles police officer, many thanks.

Solving a mystery

It was on the south side of Bricher Road, between Randall and Peck. It was bright pink and very cheery looking and had a smiling human face. It always made me feel happy when I drove by it. It is no longer there. Does anybody

We have to stop shopping at these big boxes so that our little store owners can survive.

Batavia just doesn’t get it and maybe really doesn’t care. The real estate taxes and utility costs are crippling Batavia residents. The city spends millions on streets to nowhere, gives away TIF money as if it’s free money and now wants to raise utility rates. No one in the city government is ever accountable for any of these horrendous decisions.

Someone should be fired for this utility arrangement, which was supposed to save the taxpayers money. It’s time to clean house in Batavia. We need term limits now in the city of Batavia.

Enforce the snow routes About snow routes in St. Charles, if St. Charles isn’t going to enforce the snow routes, maybe they should just take the signs down. In every storm, I have seen vehicles parked on snow routes. They are still there after the snow is done.

The plows have to keep plowing around them, and when they do move, you have piles of snow left. In the past, they used to be ticketed and towed. I know it’s been cold, but maybe police should get out of their warm cars and take care of these vehicles.

Logical Imagine an individual enrolling in a driver’s education course involving classroom and on-the-road training. Then they would be given both a written and a road test. If both of these are passed, they would be issued a license allowing them to drive on any highway. Sounds logical, doesn’t it? Now picture an individual applying for a concealed-carry permit. They would be taught in a classroom and on a shooting range, by a state-licensed instructor, about the laws and the proper method of safely handling a firearm. If they pass all these tests, they are fingerprinted and investigated by the Illinois State Police. The prints are also sent to the FBI for further investigation. If the applicant clears all these checks, they may be issued a concealed-carry permit. Sounds logical, doesn’t it? Then why are properly licensed people being banned from carrying in so many establishments?

That sounds totally illogical. In today’s environment, I would feel much safer knowing that some folks around me are legally carrying a firearm. Now that’s logical.

Don’t pile snow For the past two winters, St. Charles has really dropped the ball on snow removal. In the past, people used to commend St. Charles for the high level that was placed in the snow program.

I’m calling in regards to the Geneva person who says they’re tired of taxes. Tell them to go to Batavia. We’ve got a big library that they pay for. Look at the schools.

They keep building, building, building. They don’t care about taxpayers, either. They are trying to tax us out of our homes, too. So you’re in the same boat, Geneva.

Lately, I think they should talk to Geneva and find out how to remove snow. Geneva seems to have it figured out.

They always seem to be slow to get the trucks on the road, but they have no problem having the trucks out driving up and down the streets that have already been plowed.

Maybe they could learn how to not pile snow across the sidewalks and at the corners, especially around the schools.

I guess the key for St. Charles to look good is to not have it snow.

Health care, economy top issues in 11th

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The Affordable Care Act and the economy are among the issues in the race for the 11th Congressional District.

Naperville businessman Bert Miller, conservative talk show host Ian Bayne of Aurora, Grundy County Board member Chris Balkema and state Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, are running for the Republican nomination in the March 18 primary. Lisle resident Craig Robbins recently dropped out of the race.

The 11th District includes North Aurora, Aurora, Naperville, Lisle and Joliet. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, has held the seat since November 2012 after defeating former U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert.

Miller said he wants to see the economy growing faster than it is.

“The economy is moving forward, but at a snail’s pace,” Miller said. “I believe the economy will fix itself. If we

can get people in Congress to work together to address the Social Security problem, to jointly fix Obamacare and to work on our deficit problems, the economy will take care of itself.”

Miller recently stepped down after three decades managing Phoenix Closures, a manufacturer of plastic bottle caps and lids headquartered in Naperville.

“I understand what it takes to make a budget and stick with it,” Miller said. “I think I am a person who can bring people together in Washington. We’re not going to solve our problems by ignoring one another.”

Senger has been a state representative since 2009. Before that, she was on the Naperville City Council from 2002 to 2008.

“As state legislator, I’ve taken on the toughest issues,” she said. “You have to work with people, but you also have to incorporate your principles into the solution. And I’ve been able to do that.”

Harner’s Now Offering New Orlean’s Style

Regarding the state of public education, Senger said that individual states and not the federal government should take the lead in implementing standards.

“No Child Left Behind failed,” Senger said. “Each state and each district in the state is different. Every household is different and every child is different. That’s why you have to customize it uniquely to each working area.”

In announcing in September that he was running for Congress, Balkema said he would work to break the gridlock in Congress.

“That is unproductive to the average family in America that is trying to make ends meet,” he said.

Balkema has been a manager at Caterpillar for 20 years

and has been on the Grundy County Board since 2010. His priorities include cutting the tax rate to stimulate the economy and repealing the Affordable Care Act and replacing it with free market health care principles, such as allowing insurance to be sold across state lines.

Bayne criticized his competitors for being “too similar to Bill Foster to beat Bill Foster.”

“I think right now what the American people need is a person who will go to war for the future of the country,” he said.

“The thing that I do is that I fight for people.”

His priorities include repealing the Affordable Care Act, restoring government spending to 1990 levels and reducing federal control of schools.

High winds send trucks off roadway on I-88

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Three individual incidents sent trucks off the roadway early Friday on Interstate 88 near Route 47 in Sugar Grove.

An official from the Illinois State Police said there was one minor injury, but nobody was taken to a hospital.

Capt. Patrick Kimes from the state police said the incidents took place starting at 6:51 a.m. west of Route 47.

He said strong winds likely contributed to the incidents.

A wind advisory was in effect in the area, with the National Weather Service warning of sustained winds of 30 to 39 mph with gusts between 45 and 57 mph.

Kimes said the incidents were unrelated, but they took place at about the same time

One vehicle, which he described as a “truck tractor double bottom” was heading east on the interstate when it ended up in a ditch on the side of the road.

Another vehicle was traveling west at about the same time when it, too, went off the road. He described a third incident as minor, involving a smaller truck.

Kimes said the driver of one of the trucks complained of pain but was not hospitalized.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The DuKane Chapter of ABATE of Illinois will present its fifth annual Laugh into Spring Comedy Show Fundraiser at 7 p.m. Friday at the Arcada Theater, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The event will benefit the DuKane ABATE 28th annual Toy and Food Run, Mutual Ground Inc., and St. Vincent’s Food Pantry. ABATE stands for A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education, a motorcyclists rights and safety organization.

The event features six comics with CRS Band opening the show. The comic lineup is Paul Nasby – who is acting as the host – Eric Hedman, Dale Irvin, Seth Davis, Jim Flannigan and headliner Bob Jay, the “Man of 999 Voices.”

William Floyd Marsh Jr., 56, a retired deputy from Clackamas County, was arrested Feb. 13 in Kane County and charged with armed violence, trafficking marijuana, delivery and possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and money laundering, all felonies.

Wiese was charged with delivery and possession of a controlled substance – heroin and methamphetamine – and delivery of a controlled substance, cocaine; and burglary.

“I do not know how they know each other, and it is part of an ongoing investigation,” Kraus said. “We don’t know how many more people are involved. We have a pretty significant number of people working on it.”

In a statement, the Clacka-

mas County Interagency Task Force said in addition to its own investigation, it would provide assistance as it is able to Kane County. The task force was founded in 2006 to fight illegal drugs.

When Kane deputies stopped Marsh for speeding in a construction zone, they said they found $80,000 in cash hidden in a toolbox in his vehicle, along with two handguns.

Serving search warrants at two Chicago-area storage lockers also linked to Marsh, deputies said they discovered 55 pounds of high-grade marijuana with a street value of approximately $750,000, as well as an additional $2,185 in cash, leading to the charges against him.

Aurora Central Catholic counterpart Eddie Gonzalez stands the same distance from his own immortality.

Both athletes advanced to today’s IHSA state tournament finals at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center with Friday efforts that went exactly as planned.

Perhaps Gonzalez, the first state finalist in ACC history, can channel some of Jimenez’s cool in his 1A title bout. A St. Charles resident, Jimenez improved to 41-3 with two more victories Friday.

He’ll face 44-1 Jon Marmolejo – whose only loss came to Jimenez in Harlem’s Dvorak Tournament earlier this season – for the 3A crown. As usual, Jimenez will tote a determined glare with him.

“You see a lot of people in the finals freeze up, and being fortunate enough to have this experience and be here before, it really helps you mentally think it’s just another match. Nothing’s big,” Jimenez said. “Win or lose, the sun will come up. I’m just going to have fun out there.

It’s my senior year.”

Gonzalez (31-6) might as well be trumpeting that same rhetoric. He defeated a 38-0 wrestler in Thursday’s 1A prelims and 44-win Ben Corlett of Sherrard in Friday’s semis, controlling the pace throughout a 6-0 victory.

A fourth-place finisher at the Plano Sectional, Gonzalez is primed to continue his run against Josh Wallick of Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher, who is bidding for a repeat title.

“After last week, I was real low on confidence, but then this week of practice it got better and I was able to make

some noise out here,” Gonzalez said.

Marmion’s Nathan Traxler (182) and Josh Meyers (195) lost semifinals against wrestlers with a combined 97-1 record. “[Today] is going to be the day that defines us,” Cadets coach Ryan Cumbee said.

“We’ll see how we finish [today].”

Seven other Chronicle-area athletes remain in the hunt for the podium in 3A wrestlebacks. Keone Derain (St. Charles East, 152) and Connor McKeehan (Batavia, 220) join Marmion’s Anthony Bosco (113), AJ Jaffe (120), Trace Carello (152), Nick Ferraro (170) and Lucas Warren (220).

McKeehan will face Warren with an eye on recapturing the urgency that helped him to a second-period fall against Prospect’s Sam Ford in his first-round wrestleback.

“I tried to be more offensive this time around, because I realized that I haven’t been really offensive for the tournament, and it’s state,” McKeehan said. “There’s no reason not to be offensive. You’ve got nothing to lose here and everything to gain.”

Geneva’s Mitch Bradberry (3A, 182), Kaneland’s Justin Diddell (2A, 285) and Mooseheart’s Joe Feemorlu (1A, 170) each were eliminated via the “follow the leader” rule when the athlete who defeated them in preliminaries lost in the quarterfinals.

East athletes and coaches are fond of the saying “It’s a great day to be a Saint” no matter the season or sport.

That contention faced considerable heat from approximately 3:25 to 3:45 p.m. Friday, as seniors Isaiah Vela (138) and Jake Mende (145) competed in elimination matches moments before Derain prepared for his own.

3-2 lead with an escape early in the third period but soon yielded a takedown that put him down by a point. In position to score a dramatic comeback, Vela appeared to earn a takedown on the edge in the closing seconds, but referees awarded no scoring.

A three-time state qualifier, Vela lost his preliminary bout by one point, as well.

“I’m just as upset as he is.

I feel like he should have had that last takedown,” Derain said.

Derain watched most of the match from the other side of the arena floor before defeating Metea Valley’s Kenan Carter, a familiar foe, by 5-1 decision. Recovered from a 3-2 loss to Libertyville’s Joey Gunther in the quarterfinals, Derain is eager to share the rest of his run with Mende, Vela and 160-pound junior Ramon Lopez, who made the trip after narrowly missing a state berth.

Final UEC River Boys basketball standings

jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Nate Navigato finished strong, much as his Geneva boys basketball team is closing the season.

The Vikings defeated St. Charles North, 61-51, on Friday in Upstate Eight Conference River play. The victory in the conference finale landed Geneva (20-5, 8-4 UEC River) in a three-way tie for second place in the conference alongside St. Charles East and St. Charles North, four games behind champion Larkin.

After a lukewarm start in conference play, Geneva was much sharper the second time through league play, reversing the results on both East and North.

Phil Ralston said. “So really, if you’ve improved, then your situation should be better the second time you play them than the first.”

The North Stars (16-8, 8-4 UEC River) fielded a nontraditional rotation for most of the night, most notably playing without standout senior guard Alec Goetz (illness) for the second half.

North went deep into its

large senior class throughout the first quarter as the North Stars adjusted their lineup for senior night. The Vikings pounced for a 13-5 lead at the end of the quarter.

Also upping the degree of difficulty for North, coach Tom Poulin flew into town Friday after spending the week in Florida helping take care of his ailing father.

“I got in, and then came straight here, and then all the sudden Phil’s throwing his 1-3 with a chaser and his boxand-one at you, so we had to kind of go on the fly and try to attack that, but once we got it organized, we showed we could attack those and get high-percentage shots,” Poulin said.

Geneva led, 28-14, at halftime, and especially with Goetz sidelined, it appeared the Vikings might coast to the season split with North.

But North junior guard Jake Ludwig helped engineer an inspired push that brought the North Stars within three points twice during the fourth quarter, including on a threepoint play by Ludwig that made it 46-43 Geneva with 4:37 to play.

But Navigato kept the North Stars at bay in crunch time, scoring 14 of his 26 points in the fourth on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor, including a trio of 3-pointers, plus three made free throws.

Navigato said the Vikings made some offensive tweaks against North’s matchup zone in the late going.

“It got me open, and we had some great looks, out of bounds and just coming down the court,” Navigato said.

Goetz scored two points in the first half before spending most of the third quarter out of sight. He returned to

North’s bench late in the third quarter but did not re-enter the game.

“He was really not feeling well at all, and even when he came out and said he could go in the third, his eyes weren’t saying that, so we left him there,” Poulin said.

Chris Parrilli had 14 points for the Vikings while Mike Landi added seven points and six rebounds off the bench.

Ludwig scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half for North. Senior Tyler DeMoss and junior Jack Callaghan added nine points apiece for the North Stars.

Ralston said the Vikings have won 20 games in consecutive seasons for the first time in 32 years.

“Obviously, we hope we have much further to go than this but I think for Geneva this is a big step forward for our program,” Ralston said.

Kaneland held Sycamore star scorer Bailey Gilbert to just five points using a boxand-one defense.

However, the Spartans showed they’re more than just Gilbert, as Morgan Picolotti led Sycamore with 11 points.

Baylee Foresman added 10 and Moll finished with eight.

The Knights, who upset Sycamore last week and cost

the Spartans the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title, finish the season 14-15.

“I’m extremely proud of that group of seniors. We didn’t finish up how we wanted, but I mean, that’s life,” Colombe said. “That’s part of why you coach, part of why you teach, is there’s life lessons. Like I said, we’re not down because the effort was there tonight. We played our butts off on defense, we just couldn’t hit a shot.”

PLANO – Kaneland used a furious late first-half run to get itself back in Friday’s Class 3A Plano Regional final.

However, the momentum evaporated quickly, as the Knights scored just five points in the second half of a 40-20 loss to Sycamore.

Sycamore took an early lead on the Knights as four players got on the board in the first quarter.

However, Kaneland roared back with 13 in the second, closing the period on a 10-2 run, capped off by an Amber Winquist-Bailey layup, as Sycamore went into halftime leading by three.

Kaneland got off to a good start in the second half as well, with Ally VanBogaert hitting an early three. But after that, it was all Spartans, as Sycamore would outscore Kaneland 20-2 the rest of the game.

“I think they got on a little run there, they got free for a couple threes and pulled away.

We were struggling on offense, we thought they did a great job inside doubling down on whoever had the ball inside, and we weren’t hitting shots,” Knights coach Ernie Colombe said. “So I think it was a combination. They certainly play great defense. Brett (Goff)’s done a great job with that program, and not for lack of effort but we missed some shots.

“They hit some shots at that time and the lead grew, and I think we started settling

The Vikings freshman scored 37.875 to take the allaround title at the IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Meet Friday night at Palatine High School.

Ginsberg is the first freshman to win all-around since Fremd’s Mary Burke did it in 2005.

“Everything went well, I hit all my routines the way I wanted to,” Ginsberg said. “It was a good night.”

Ginsberg said the team hoped to finish higher, but she qualified for the 10-competitor finals today in all four events.

Teammates Megan Beitzel (vault) and Dominique Brognia (floor exercise) also made the finals.

“This is probably one of the biggest meets I’ve been to since [Junior Olympic] nationals,” Ginsberg said. “I just tried to keep my focus just like I do in practice. I knew I’d been pretty consistent, if I stayed clean I thought I could do it.”

Geneva is fifth as a team with 143.375. Teams can improve their scores with performances in the finals, which start at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

“Claire’s been solid all year and can handle the pressure for a freshman,” Geneva coach Kim Hostman said.

“She’s an outstanding gymnast. I’m proud of her performance. I knew she had the potential.”

St. Charles North co-op’s Rachel Dugan qualified for the finals on the uneven bars and Kelly Gorniak made it in floor exercise. North finished sixth among the eight teams with 143.425.

Saints lose Adduci to sprained ankle, hold on for win

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – St. Charles East boys basketball lost its starting point guard in the first quarter, built a 20-point lead anyway, then nearly lost that lead in the second half before holding on for a 69-63 victory over Elgin on Friday night.

The win lifted the Saints (14-11, 8-4) into a three-way tie for second place in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division with Geneva and St. Charles North.

Senior Dom Adduci sprained his left ankle crashing into Elgin’s Ryan Sitter with 2:47 left in the first quarter.

“I was driving the lane in transition and I jumped up and it was kind of a freak thing,” Adduci said. “I landed on one of their players’ ankles or his foot and my ankle just rolled. Then I kind of hopped and I landed it on again and I just went down.

It was just unfortunate.”

After consulting with a trainer, both Adduci and East coach Pat Woods thought the injury was minor and wouldn’t keep Adduci out of action for long.

“Low-grade ankle sprain is what the trainer said,” Woods noted. “Obviously, it’ll be a day-to-day thing. No reason to put him back in the game tonight although I’m sure he wanted to tape it up and that.”

The Saints led by five when Adduci left the game and used an 11-0 run late in the first quarter and into the second quarter to open up a 27-10 lead.

A long 3-pointer by sophomore James McQuillan extended the margin to 20 just before halftime. McQuillan scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half.

“McQuillan is a great player,” Woods said. “He’s only a sophomore and he has such poise. He went through some growing pains last

year as a freshman. We talked about him asserting his will a little bit more. He was 5-for-8 from the field, 3-for-3 from 3. He’s such a smooth, quiet player. When all’s said and done, he’ll end up being a dominant player.

The Saints didn’t appear to miss a beat without Adduci, taking a 39-22 lead into the break, but McQuillan said building that cushion was not as easy as it looked.

“Obviously Dom’s a very good offensive player,” McQuillan said. “We just knew we needed to step it up as a team, move the ball around, and get really good shots for everyone – just make the extra pass and try to get the defense to work a little.”

The Maroons cut into the lead into the second half behind the strong play of senior guard Isaiah Butler, who scored 20 points.

They eventually pulled to within 1 with 2:35 left in the game when Butler came up with a steal and fed the

ball to Desmond Sanders for a short bank. But Cole Gentry and McQuillan hit four straight free throws to help East close out the contest.

“They just brought great energy,” McQuillan said of Elgin’s second-half surge.

“Some of our shots didn’t fall. We made some bad turn-

overs. … I think we closed the game on a 9-2 run or something, so I think we can take away the good part about how we closed the game.”

Jake Asquini (15), Mick Vyzral (12) and A.J. Washington (10) joined McQuillan as double-figure scorers for the Saints.

Batavia snaps losing streak

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia boys basketball team ended its Upstate Eight River conference slate Friday on a positive note by beating Streamwood, 74-47.

The victory snapped an eight-game Bulldog losing streak.

“I think we been improving for the past three weeks now and we haven’t necessarily seen it in terms of wins,” said Batavia coach Jim Nazos. “I thought we took a big stride in the third quarter tonight. Defensively we got stronger and stayed more disciplined. ” The Sabres (2-26, 0-12 UEC River) tried their best to spoil Batavia’s senior night in the first half.

The teams exchanged the lead eight times in the first 16 minutes. Streamwood led by a point, 14-13, at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs (7-16, 2-10) led by only one point at the half, 31-30, thanks to buzzer-beating basket by Sabre Antonio Harris.

The second half started the same way. The Sabres retook the lead 15 seconds into the third quarter on a put-back basket by Cole Seger. Seger led all Streamwood scorers with 15 points.

The Bulldogs then got their inside outside game going. Tucker Knox scored the

first of his four inside second-half baskets at the 6:59 mark to put Batavia ahead for good.

Knox finished the night with 14 points.

“It took us a little bit for our team to take on our identity, but in the third quarter we were able to run away with it,” said senior Micah Coffey.

If Batavia could not work the ball inside, they would kick the ball out to their perimeter shooters.

Both Danny Piecynski and Coffey drained three 3-pointers in the second half. Coffey led all scorers with 18 points while Piecynski scored 15.

“We were more disciplined in our position and where we should be,” said Nazos. “That led to a lot of open drive layups and second rotation layups.”

The Bulldogs widened their lead to 11 points at the end of the third quarter, 5241.

“Throughout the second half we did a real good job of staying with our offense.”

Nazos said.

All six Batavia seniors – Knox, Coffey, Ryan Olson, Alex Bala, Jeremy Schoessling and David Alonzo – scored in the game.

Alonzo scored the last Bulldog basket, a trey from the corner.

Jacob Siewert and Jacob McGlone scored 12 points for Streamwood.

MORRIS – Kaneland’s status as a thorn in the side of the Morris boys basketball team since the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference formed may have reached a new depth Friday night.

After scoring the first 12 points of the fourth quarter – along with the final four of the third – to take a 44-34 lead, the Redskins were shut out over the final 3:29 as the Knights rallied. Kaneland defeated Morris, 47-44, in a setback to the Redskins’ conference title hopes.

Otherwise 5-0 in conference play, the Redskins are now 0-2 against Kaneland, which has gone 2-3 against other conference teams.

They will become Kaneland fans tonight, as the Knights will host NIB 12 East leader Sycamore.

“We have kids out there who have logged a lot of minutes through their varsity careers,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said. “It was

a bunch of guys stepping up and playing really hard. We executed our 1-3-1. I thought it slowed them down a lot.”

Austin Patterson of Morris scored four points without time coming off the clock twice in the second half. The first was a four-point play to close the third quarter; the second came when Patterson was fouled while attempting a 3, and the Knights were called for a technical foul after.

Kaneland got its first points of the fourth quarter on a Ryan David conventional three-point play, which when coupled with 3-pointers from Ty Carlson and David cut a 10-point Morris lead to one in a minute of game time.

Kaneland then took the lead with 49 seconds to play on a David steal and basket, and David added two late free throws.

Aurora Christian 64, Walther Christian 58: At Aurora, R.D. Lutze scored 14 points and

Marmion 68, Aurora Central Catholic 57: At Aurora, Marmion led by three at halftime and closed out the win. The Cadets were led by Jordan Glasgow (22 points) and Jake Esp (20). Michael Sheehan was battling the flu but had 12 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. The Cadets improve to 14-12, 5-3 in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue.

Aurora Christian has some 4A playoff history, having advanced to the 4A state championship game in 2008 when it lost to Bloomington Central Catholic.

That’s not the only reason the Eagles shouldn’t be intimidated by a potential 4A playoff draw. Aurora Christian regularly has faced larger schools during the regular season in the Suburban Christian Conference and will continue to do so going forward in its new conference, the Chicago Catholic League.

Still, the Eagles use many more two-way players than most of those larger schools, and depth can become increasingly important come November.

Last year’s Aurora Christian team lost several key starters to injury during the course of the season.

How did that invite come about?

Play ball: Aurora Christian will field a softball team again this spring, Beebe confirmed. The Eagles have had a softball program in the past but did not have a team in 2013 because of insufficient participation.

The Eagles will still be guided by former coach Rich Hazlett.

It will be a year of transition for Aurora Christian football in many ways. Beebe’s two brothers – Don and Dave – are switching roles, with Dave Beebe having been named the program’s new head coach and Don Beebe expected to guide the offense as an assistant.

While his school’s football program projects to face a more challenging postseason path, the new IHSA policy – announced Wednesday – would no longer multiply private schools’ enrollments for sports in which the school has not attained four points (schools will accrue one point for a regional title, two points for a sectional title) in a four-year span.

“If you haven’t won a regional or a sectional the multiplier actually wouldn’t be there for us,” Beebe said.

“So I know the IHSA is trying to do the fairest thing for their membership, and we’re perfectly OK with it.”

I reached high school and the bases kind of spread out I really didn’t grow, so my arms strength wasn’t there for third base for those long throws. So I kind of moved over to second my freshman year, and I kind of stuck since then.

What’s your baseball regimen like during the winter?

… Second, you usually see what a pitcher has in the game situation, get to see an at bat. … Third is more of a power hitter. I do have power but I’m more of a contact, get-on-base guy.

With my travel team, we started back probably late October, Monday through Thursday, 4:30 to 9 every day, and then we started to slow down. Now, we’re starting to get into high school, that’ll be like four days a week, too … and then I actually have speed training on Saturday with my travel team, so my only free days are Friday and Sunday.

How much are you looking forward to high school season?

I’m very excited. Honestly, last year our high school team really did good, so I’m really excited to see where we go this year.

The Aurora Christian football program’s days of wreaking havoc on the IHSA Class 3A playoff draw are through, at least for the time being.

As part of the IHSA’s new “Success Advancement Component,” which will bump up some non boundaried schools in the state series classification system based on hitting various postseason success benchmarks, the Eagles will be a Class 4A team, effective the 2014 season.

Aurora Christian athletic director Dan Beebe is leery of future Eagles teams paying a postseason price for the success of their predecessors. The Eagles narrowly lost in the 3A state semifinals last season after winning state championships in 2011 and 2012.

“We had back-to-back very strong classes, two years ago and then last year’s graduating class,” Beebe said. “We had a very good team that put together a pretty good streak there with back-to-back state championships. Unfortunately, for the next four years our kids that are coming up are going to have to deal with the repercussions of that. I think the biggest thing is it’s sad and dis-

No. Really, winter is kind of dragging, so on that part, yeah, but everything else, no, not that bad.

What brought you from Aurora Christian to ACC? Mainly the sports. I mean football is huge over there at [Aurora Christian], obviously, but baseball is my main sport, and I knew ACC had a good chance at getting to state, so I transferred over there.

Geneva is starting a kids wrestling club. Coaches from Geneva High School and both Geneva North and Geneva South middle schools are volunteering as coaching staff as are several dads in the area. Coaches will work with the kids on their technique and overall performance. There will be several tournaments for the wrestlers to test themselves against local competition.

Practices will be held in the wrestling room at Geneva High School and will run through May 22. There will be no practice the week of spring break, March 31 through April 4.

Finding heaven during a sunny day What a difference a day makes. Tuesday my son gamely suggested we take a blowtorch to our fatigued gutters lest they collapse under their frozen burden, but by the next day those ice dams were but a distant memory.

You know that feeling you get when you’re cold and tired and dig around in your bag, hoping against hope that you’ll find a teabag there – and you actually do? That’s how I felt Wednesday morning, when I realized how warm it had become. I even put sunscreen on my face, because after a few moments of basking on my back porch steps, I wasn’t prepared to give it up. I sat there with my big red dog, watched the progress of a box elder bug and sipped my tea. I fired up my laptop. I would do my work right there in the sun, I decided.

Finally warm, in only a long T-shirt and a cardigan, there was no doubt I’d found heaven. I almost dragged my lawn chair out of the garage. Instead, I leaned back, closed my eyes and took

I knew that by Thursday everything could change, as the earth is too frozen to soak up the melting snow and forecast rain. I didn’t let my wondering – about how many of those lilting drips might wend their way into my aging basement, spoil my Wednesday, however.

Instead, I soaked up every bit of sunny pleasantness I could, like money in the bank for a rainy day. And it’s a good thing, too. Because before dawn the next

morning the thunder rolled, rousting me from my sleep.

• •• I hadn’t even peed yet, by the time Holly bounced into my room and asked me to braid her hair. I sat up in bed and did as I was told. But I didn’t move fast enough, apparently.

“With speed!” my dear daughter implored. I could barely open my eyes, let alone braid quickly. Why was she so perky? Didn’t she hear that thunder?

“If you’d ever let me practice, lo, these many years, I might have it down,” I quipped. Holly’s hair is beautiful. She’s never been a big fan of having her hair done, though. She becomes a teenager soon, so I was glad for the chance.

“Can’t you go any faster?” I was blowing it.

“Get me a brush, will you? That’ll help,” I said. She ran off to get one as

I willed myself to wake up. When she tossed the brush I wasn’t exactly on my game. I rubbed my arm.

“You’re such an antique,” she said, and leaned over to kiss the spot where the brush had landed. Oh, but this kid cracks me up.

“Don’t make me laugh. Have I mentioned I haven’t even peed, yet?”

She sighed. I got back to work. Man, but that braid turned out nice.

“Best braid I’ve ever done,” I pronounced triumphantly.

“I changed my mind,” she said, apparently unimpressed, and yanked it out on her way down the stairs. The thunder rolled. What’s a mom to do? I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, laughed again, and headed down to inspect the basement. That’s what.

‘Wind Rises’ offers mesmerizing final flight of fancy for Miyazaki

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post It seems like just yesterday that Hayao Miyazaki, the master of Japanese anime, was making his U.S. theatrical debut with “The Princess Mononoke,” a lush, deeply imagined environmental allegory. That 1997 movie was the first time many American film-goers entered Miyazaki’s world of myth, magic and lyrical, finely detailed imagery; happily, there are now generations of children who have grown up cherishing such Miyazaki classics as “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” the way their parents played and re-played “Snow White,” “101 Dalmatians” and “The Aristocats.”

With “The Wind Rises,” which has earned an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature, Miyazaki has made something of a departure from the themes and visual language that has constituted the house style of his Studio Ghibli. The digression feels all the more startling in that the 73-year-old filmmaker has announced that this will be his last film. The story of World War II fighter plane designer Jiro Horikoshi may be highly fiction-

alized and suffused with Miyazaki’s characteristic sensitivity and breathtaking vistas, but it nonetheless feels more earthily literal than the director’s standard family-friendly fare. This isn’t your kids’ Miyazaki.

With that caveat in mind, it’s possible to admire and even enjoy the world that Miyazaki invites viewers to enter, in this case Japan during the 1920s and ’30s, when the nearsighted, airplane-obsessed Horikoshi, unable to become a pilot, instead turns to engineering the flying machines that course through his dreams like giant, enchanted birds.

As often as not, he also dreams of an Italian aeronautical designer named Caproni, who appears throughout “The Wind Rises” like a benevolent muse. Miyazaki uses Horikoshi’s life to illuminate some of the most distressing chapters of Japanese history, including the country’s crippling economic depression, the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and a tuberculosis epidemic that, in the film, winds up playing a role in Horikoshi’s courtship of his wife, Nahoko.

There are no fanciful creatures in “The Wind Rises” and, with the exception of a few nods toward Japan’s animist tradition, few instances of

Miyazaki’s taste for the supernatural. But the movie still possesses the filmmaker’s characteristic sense of wonderment.

Younger viewers may not be so transported as the protagonist by talk of flush rivets, aluminum flanges and retracting undercarriages, but Miyazaki manages to cast a mesmerizing spell over even those quotidian objects, capturing and conveying Horikoshi’s own passion for industrial design, as well as his dawning dread as to their end use – in his case, as the notorious “Zero” planes flown by kamikaze pilots during the war.

Although the thoughtful, pacifistic designer clearly harbors misgivings that what he regards as morally neutral work will end in destruction and slaughter, the most eloquent voice of doom in “The Wind Rises” belongs to Werner Herzog, who voices a mysterious German man Horikoshi encounters during an extended stay at a rustic hotel. Somehow Herzog’s eerie cadences fit perfectly with his Cassandra-like character, just as it’s fitting that the rest of the characters aren’t nearly as recognizable. (Horikoshi is voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nahoko by Emily Blunt and Caproni by Stanley Tucci.)

This should not be “handled at the next event;” it should be handled before the next event.

Tell her you prefer any leftover food be saved for your own family, and that in the future, she should not invite Chuck unless she has first cleared it with you. If she can’t abide by your wishes, you should not invite her.

Use coconut oil sparingly; better options exist Dear Doctor K: Coconut oil is all over the grocery store shelves lately. Is it healthier than other cooking oils?

Dear Reader: I’ve also noticed that coconut oil seems to be catching on these days. I consulted with Walter Willett, the chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, to get his opinion. Here’s what we discussed.

Not all cooking oils are created equal. Some are good for your health, while others promote disease. (I’ve put a side-by-side comparison of several common cooking oils on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Unsaturated fats, which include monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats, provide health benefits. Good sources of monounsaturated fats are olive oil, peanut oil and canola oil. Corn oil, sunflower oil and safflower oil are common examples of polyunsaturated fats. Saturated fats, found in butter and full-fat dairy products, can increase total and LDL (bad) cholesterol – and the risk of heart disease.

Coconut oil is about 90 percent saturated fat, so it would seem that coconut oil would be bad news for our hearts. But what’s interesting about coconut oil is

Coconut oil is, obviously, a plant-based oil, and plant-based oils are more than just fats; they contain many antioxidants and other substances. So their overall effects on health can’t be predicted just by the changes in cholesterol levels. Coconut is a wonderful flavor, and there’s no problem using coconut oil occasionally.

But for now, I’d recommend using it sparingly. Other vegetable oils are likely healthier than coconut oil. And though coconut oil may be “less bad” than its high saturated fat content would indicate, there are better options.

If you do choose coconut oil, be sure to use virgin coconut oil. It doesn’t have the unhealthy trans fats that are found in hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated forms.

Finally, remember that all cooking oils are high in calories.

So when cooking, make sure your drizzle of oil doesn’t become a downpour.

You’ll notice that my advice

in this column – as in most of my columns – is not definite. I’m not saying you should definitely avoid coconut oil, but I’m also cautioning against using it a lot. That kind of advice may be frustrating.

But I think you want me to give you my honest assessment of the scientific evidence. And the fact is that, as with many of the questions I get, there just isn’t enough evidence to be conclusive.

To tell definitively whether any food is healthy or unhealthy would require a study involving thousands of people and lasting 20 to 30 years. And every day for those 20 to 30 years, certain people (chosen at random) would have to eat the food, while others would have to avoid it. I think you can see that would be one hard study to conduct successfully.

So I look for what imperfect evidence I can and draw what seem like the most reasonable conclusions. Einstein said it best: “Everything should be made as simple as possible, and no simpler.”

strict discipline Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and just finished my third semester of college. My GPA is 3.9, and I also work about 10-15 hours a week at my family’s business. I am in the honors program, and I think I am a responsible person. However, my parents still treat me like a kid. My curfew is 11:30 p.m. (I still live at home), and they discourage me from attending all parties. I’d like to take a weekend and visit my boyfriend of three years who is in college about three hours away from me. However, my parents refuse. It’s not that they don’t approve of our relationship (they think that my boyfriend is great), it’s that they don’t want me to see him without adult supervision. But yesterday I saw him kissing her when he dropped her off at my house and I almost freaked out. When I asked her about being “cautious,” she told me not to worry because, “You can’t get infected with HIV by kissing.” I didn’t say anything to her, but I find it hard to believe that you can’t become infected by kissing an infected person. If she can become infected, I’m not so sure I want to hang around with her.
