was able to check something off of my bucket list a couple of weeks ago.

I was invited by Ron Julian, a volunteer snowmobile safety patrolman for the Kane County Forest Preserve District, to do a ride-along – on a

snowmobile!

It is my mantra as a photojournalist that if someone asks you, “do you want to … “you say “yes.”

Assuming my physical or emotional safety is in check, I say yes.

I arrived at the meeting location off of Hansen Road near Campton Hills and quickly suited up into my snow pants, two pairs of gloves, parka and ski goggles.

Luckily, I was prepared, as my car is usually loaded with

an assortment of weather-ready gear.

It was an exhilarating ride in temperatures that dipped to about 10 below zero.

It didn’t matter, my smile was frozen to my face.

Lauzen continues to talk about raises

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For the third consecutive day, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen on Thursday laid out a plan to boost salaries for county directors.

Lauzen presented the Administration and Public Service committees with proposals to give Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock and Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong 5 percent raises.

Armstrong also is poised to get a 2 percent raise retroactive to Dec. 1, 2012, because he was inadvertently excluded from the 2 percent increase

Chairman proposes salary boosts for county directors granted in fiscal 2013 to other directors.

The proposed salary bumps are part of a larger effort by Lauzen to make director salaries more comparable to those offered by other counties in the region. The philosophy is to protect talent and reward achievement, he said.

“There are some folks here I wouldn’t want to try to replace,” Lauzen said.

According to information provided by Lauzen, the average salary for chief information officers in Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kendall, Lake,

McHenry and Will counties is $132,190, and Fahnestock’s salary is $135,484.

The assessment supervisors in those counties make, on average, $111,096, and Armstrong’s salary is $108,150, according to Lauzen’s information.

Board members indicated the raises are deserved.

They described Fahnestock as the county’s technology architect and said Armstrong has a knack of explaining information better than anyone else.

Kane County committee backs proposed $13K sign

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Board will be asked a second time to approve a $13,000 sign that should help northbound traffic find the Kane County Government Center.

The proposed monument sign is part of a $47,000 signage project intended to make the Geneva campus, at 719 S. Batavia Ave. in Geneva, easier to navigate.

In a narrow vote, the County Board last month sent the proposal to the Administration Committee for further consideration after member Becky Gillam, R-West Dundee, raised concerns about the $13,000 sign planned

for South Batavia Avenue.

She suggested the monument sign be replaced with a black directional arrow sign.

In a 3-2 vote Thursday, the Administration Committee forwarded the original proposal despite those concerns.

Gillam was not in attendance.

Committee Chairman Ron Ford, D-Aurora, said a sign in that location is justified. He advocated for the monument sign because it should last for decades. He said he would hate to install a less expensive option and be asked why the county didn’t invest in a better quality sign.

“This is not something we’re doing for a short time,” Ford said.

Board members Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, and Doug Sche-

flow, R-Elgin, voted against the project as proposed.

Lewis asked if it makes sense to spend $13,000 on a sign when there is one 50 yards away.

“Once you get here the first time, you know where [the government center] is,” he said.

He reminded the committee that the majority of the full board sent the proposal back to committee.

“There is value in listening and responding to your colleagues,” Lewis said.

Ford said he has seen the board approve items after initially being rejected. He encouraged committee members to talk with their colleagues about their support for the project.

The Administration Committee did not act on Fahnestock’s proposed raise because of delays caused by his medical-related absence, Lauzen said.

Kane County was spared major flooding problems Thursday despite melting snow and a daylong rain.

“From a countywide standpoint, we haven’t had any issues develop,” said Don Bryant, director of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management. “Let’s hope we dodged a bullet and things kind of stabilize.”

After temperatures flirted with 50 degrees Thursday, colder weather will return today. The high temperature today is expected to be 32 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Fox River was well below flood stage, Bryant said.

“It was 5.38 feet as of Thursday afternoon,” he said. “Flood stage is at 9 feet. There also are no ice jams that we are aware of.”

In Geneva, storm sewer inlets on Second Street in downtown Geneva that were frozen over with ice threatened to cause flooding problems at the city’s parking garage.

“The water had nowhere else to go,” Geneva communications coordinator Kevin Stahr said. “On the eastern side of the garage, there were six cars in jeopardy of being flooded. That area is a little lower than the rest of the parking garage.”

Water had begun rising up the tires of the cars, but had not entered the cars, Stahr said. The city’s public works staff worked with the police department to have the cars moved to higher and drier areas of the parking deck, he said.

“No cars were damaged due to flooding,” Stahr said. “The situation is under control. The parking garage is still open and operational at this point.”

To prevent flooding, municipalities have been urging residents to clear storm drains of ice, snow and debris around their property, both in the street and any that may be in the rear or side yards.

Disabilities ballot question seeks support If OK’d, could increase tax burden by $100 a year on $300K home

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Kane County voters will be asked to support a property tax increase of 0.1 percent on the March 18 primary ballot to fund services for people with developmental disabilities.

If the measure passes and the Kane County Board approves the full levy, it would increase the tax burden by about $100 a year for the owner of a $300,000 home. It would raise an estimated $13 million to be administered by a disabilities board – also known as a 377 board – for housing, transportation, jobs and job training among other services for people with disabilities.

Show You Care Kane spearheaded the petition drive a year ago after Kane County officials would not put the question on the ballot.

The Association for Individual Development, which serves more than 5,000 clients with developmental disabilities, took the lead in getting the measure on the ballot.

But 11 agencies that serve people with developmental disabilities support the effort and would share in the funding, AID board vice chairman Patrick Flaherty said.

“We are optimistic that this will pass,” Flaherty said.

“We know we are on the right side of this issue, so we are optimistic about the goodwill and good hearts of the people who share our community here in Kane County.”

North Aurora resident Rae Ann McNeilly is a member of a group called Kane County Taxpayers Fight Back, which opposes the referendum.

“Primarily from the standpoint that this is money being taken by taxpayers and given to a nonprofit company,” McNeilly said. “This should be private fundraising to generate this additional revenue.

This should not be a taxpayer burden especially on property owners.”

McNeilly disputed that people who are developmentally disabled need additional support through another tax.

“You are growing govern-

ment in Kane County,” McNeilly said.

McNeilly said AID itself received $16.4 million in 2013 from the state and does not need more money.

“There are people hurting all over Kane County. Is ... every one of those needs supposed to be paid through property taxes?” McNeilly said.

“This [referendum] serves a very small percentage of the Kane County residents. And yet, we are willing to put people out of their homes if they can’t afford this tax increase to serve this small slice of the community.”

McNeilly said support for people with developmental disabilities should be from private fundraising, not local property taxes.

“There are way too many people put on the responsibility of the state. That is not the role of government,” McNeilly said. “And it should not be by force. This is laziness on the part of these organizations to go to the taxing authority to get their money mandated.”

McNeilly also charged that if the referendum is approved, the three-member panel appointed by the County Board chairman to administer the funds would be paid, and then add to the state’s pension debt.

Flaherty disputed McNeilly’s statements, saying all 11 nonprofits that support the referendum will still have to do fundraising to meet a growing need.

Among the local service providers are DayOne Network in Geneva, Easter Seals DuPage and Fox Valley Region in Elgin, Fox Valley Special Recreation Association in Aurora, Valley Sheltered Workshop in Batavia and Marklund in Blackberry Township.

“The disabilities board is created to administer the funds, not to tax or raise more funds,” Flaherty said. “The County Board is the only one that can levy the tax ... and not more than what is approved.

It can be less, but not more.”

Also, by state law, the developmental disabilities board members serve as un-

paid volunteers, though they can be reimbursed for expenses, Flaherty said. Flaherty disputed that nonprofits should not receive taxes, as Illinois routinely contracts with nonprofits to provide services.

Flaherty also disputed that the developmental disabilities population in Kane County is small.

“There are thousands, up and down the valley,” Flaherty said. “The constituency is the 10,000 people who need services ... with a continuing influx yearly of people. There are 16,000 in special ed programs, and 4,000 are going to need help when they graduate.”

When developmentally disabled adults reach age 22, local schools no longer provide services for them, he said.

About 1,100 Kane County residents are on a state waiting list for housing, he said.

While fundraising and donations are important to support current programs, Flaherty said donations do not provide a stable source of funding.

“The need is constant and always growing, so donations are never enough, even in the best of times,” Flaherty said.

“Donations don’t allow for year-to-year budgeting and year-to-year planning, both of which are enormously important when you are trying to take care of people.”

As to AID receiving $16.4 million from state and federal funding in 2013, Flaherty said the money covers a broad spectrum of the agency’s services to people with mental illness, substance abuse and developmental disabilities, but is not enough to cover all the needs.

Flaherty said the federal and state allocations are not getting bigger while the numbers of people needing services grows every year. In the long term, supporting the referendum and creating a local, stable source of funding ultimately will cost taxpayers less, Flaherty said.

Former BATV station manager Holly Deitchman recently started as the new executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce after the resignation of Roger Breisch, who led the chamber for almost 10 years.

The board is in the process of finalizing the job description for the position, said Alan Wolff, BATV board president. The board hopes

to fill the position in the next month or so, he said.

“We want the right manager and not make a kneejerk reaction,” Wolff said.

Deitchman had been BATV station manager since July 2008. She started her duHolly ties with the Deitchman Batavia Chamber of Commerce this month.

Under Deitchman’s leadership, BATV has increased its programming. “Out on the Town,” a monthly show spotlighting recreation and

entertainment, premiered last year.

The monthly show “Viewpoint,” which features a roundtable discussion based on a hot community topic, premiered in July. “Viewpoint” is moderated by Kathy Gresey, editor of the Kane County Chronicle.

Wolff said he would like BATV to grow even more, especially when it comes to community involvement.

“It is a community-access station, and we need to get more involvement from the community,” he said.

He was born May 24, 1948, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Mary Agnes (Naab) Severson.

Gary graduated from Marmion Academy in 1966 and continued his education at an automotive trade school. He translated his love

of cars and racing into a full and successful career as the owner, operator and mechanic for Specialized Vehicle in Geneva and later Advanced Transmissions in Geneva.

His enthusiasm was infectious as he passed along his passion to his family and friends. When not fixing cars or enjoying road racing, Gary found great joy spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Mark (Michelle) of Coupeville, Wash., and Tracy of Geneva; brothers, Fred (Theresa) of Arizona and

Michael (Merilee) of Geneva; his children’s mother, Bobbi Severson of St. Charles; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents.

“In every one of those instances, the children become the expense of the state at higher cost – three times the cost – than at the local level,” Flaherty said.

As to increasing the property taxes, Flaherty said the amount is about $1 or $2 a week, depending on a house’s value.

“It is a modest cost to provide important work for services being received,” Flaherty said. “If not at the local level now, it will be paid for three times if provided by the state.”

Flaherty suggested those who want to save money should find a different way.

“The few vocal opponents [of the referendum] who exist would better serve the community by working to cut true waste in government rather than turning their backs on people whose only contribution to their circumstance was being born,” he said.

McNeilly said it did not matter that the amount of money being sought is small.

“They’re going to take a little more, a little more, a little more,” McNeilly said.

“It will grow unto itself.”

Variety show to benefit St. Charles East fine arts

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Several St. Charles East High School students will take the stage Saturday for a good cause.

A total of 15 students are scheduled to perform at the 11th Annual P-ARTS Variety Show. The event will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles.

The show will include a magic act, various dancers and singers, including Mary Alice Roach performing an original song she wrote called “Maybe Sunday,” said event chairperson Christina Martens.

Tickets to the event are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The proceeds are used for student scholarships and to benefit arts programs at the high school.

P-ARTS, which stands for People for the Arts, is the high school’s arts advocacy and booster club.

The funds raised will be a great help to students who want more experience in the field, said Ron Koeppl, P-ARTS co-founder and retired St. Charles East drama director.

“Parents are strapped with the cost of schooling,” Koeppl said. “It’s just one more way to give back to people who have worked in fine arts.”

Even Martens’ daughter, Rachel, has benefited from the program.

She applied for and received a scholarship last year to go to a camp at River North Dance in Chicago.

A handful of previous variety show performers have come back this year, including junior Allison Griffiths. She’ll play piano and sing Taylor Swift’s “Back to December.”

“I really enjoy getting to be with everyone backstage and just spending time with them,” Grittiths said of her fellow performers. “Performing has always been a love of mine.”

‘Babysitter Training 2.0’ set for March 30 in STC

Jesse White, in cooperation with the Batavia Park District’s Eastside Community Center, will offer a “Rules of the Road” review course next month for all residents in the Batavia area.

The course, which is free, will be offered from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 5 at the Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia.

The purpose of the course is to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination.

The course will prepare applicants for the general written and road examinations, and also provides information on the vision screening.

A middle path towards boosting minimum wage THE WASHINGTON POST Not surprisingly, the nonpartisan analysts at the Congressional Budget Office have found that President Barack Obama’s proposal to raise the minimum wage would have costs as well as benefits.

Increasing the minimum from its current level, $7.25 an hour, to $10.10 by the second half of 2016, as the president advocates, would lift 900,000 individuals out of poverty – while reducing total employment by about 500,000 workers. This finding is perfectly consistent with both economic theory and the empirical literature.

Equally unsurprisingly, Democrats and Republicans immediately turned the CBO report into more fodder for their long-running dispute over increasing the minimum wage – which the former tout as a panacea for economic inequality and the latter demonize as a job-killer. The prospect of an election-year legislative compromise on this issue, never bright, now seems fainter than ever.

That’s doubly unfortunate, since the CBO report is best read as a gentle argument in favor of a middle path on the minimum wage. Of course, the necessary precondition for seeing it in those terms is the ability to recognize that both sides in the age-old minimum-wage

debate have valid points.

A decent society would neither price entry-level workers out of jobs nor leave them completely without leverage in the labor market. The real issue is not so much whether to have a minimum wage, or even how much it should be, but how best to set it.

Our current procedure goes something like this – at irregular intervals, Washington politicians, and their allied lobbyists, stage a huge battle over arbitrarily selected numbers.

A much better procedure would consist of three steps: First, link the minimum wage to an appropriate benchmark.

We have suggested a minimum wage high enough to pay a full-time worker an average income equal to two-thirds of the poverty line for a family of four, or roughly the average level of the past 55 years. At present that would be $8 an hour – a 75-cent raise over the minimum.

Second, provide for automatic, modest annual increases, based on an appropriate inflation factor.

Third, augment the earned-income tax credit, a cash supplement to wages that works like a negative income tax. It has been gradually replacing the federal minimum wage as a poverty-fighter in recent years but remains too small for certain workers, such as childless single adults.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Education and keeping the federal government away To the Editor: Why the Kane County Chronicle uses mostly Bloomberg for its opinions page content is beyond me. How about a little balance here? There are news outlets that do not land on the left side of the political spectrum. Why not offer both sides?

Take the Feb. 12 column (from Bloomberg News, of course) entitled “Stop the Politics and adopt the Common Core.” To quote the article, “Opposition voices are growing ... as new assessments show students aren’t performing as well as they had on easier state tests ... .”

A few paragraphs later the article states, “Contrary to the claims by

opponents who say we’re taking away local control of curriculum, how educators teach the standards is entirely up to them.”

There is a maxim in education: What is tested is what is taught.

Teachers will be forced to teach what will be on the tests or risk failure and possible loss of funds and maybe even lose their job. If you want to ensure something will be taught, just require a test on it. This is a backdoor approach to creating a curriculum set by the federal government. I doubt the idea of small, limited, constitutional government will be one of the test questions.

In fact, the word education does not appear in the constitution.

Considering the constitution specifically spells out what the federal

government may and may not do, it is clearly unconstitutional for the federal government to be involved in education.

When education was left to the local schools and parents collaborated with teachers as to what would and would not be taught, we had an excellent educational system. At the time the constitution was adopted, literacy among American citizens in certain parts of the country was nearly 100 percent, according to colonialquills. blogspot.com. Today, reports state that 19 percent of high school grads can’t read. If you want excellence in education, keep the federal government away.

Vikings victorious in regional final

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Grace Loberg rebounded a missed Michaela Loebel free throw and passed to Janie McCloughan, who drilled an easy jumper.

Yes, the sequence that finally allowed the Geneva girls basketball team to exhale with the Class 4A Wheaton North Regional title Thursday night involved those three players.

A freshman post called up at midseason when Loebel suffered a knee injury, Loberg has jelled in the post with McCloughan, whose 20 points highlighted a 75-63 win against the host Falcons. Just days removed from spraining her left ankle in a club volleyball tournament, Loberg delivered 13 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks that only sparked the Vikings further.

“Grace is hurt, she grinds through it and does a great job.

Michaela, you know, hasn’t played much this season,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said. “For her to put together the game that she did is unbelievable. Great game for her.”

Loebel made two 3s in the opening minute of the third quarter, helping the Vikings (23-5) begin to build a cushion that proplled them to their 11th straight win.

Geneva advanced to face the winner of tonight’s Wheaton Warrenville South/Bartlett game in an Addison Trail Sectional semifinal Tuesday night.

Even with their next foe a mystery after moving past the Falcons (19-10), the Vikings are harnessing a strategy that’s evergreen no matter who shows up on the other side of the floor.

“Just a lot of mental preparation and really stressing the fact that we need to come right from the tip,” McCloughan said. “We can’t get too comfortable. If we have a lead, we need to keep playing like we’re losing.”

Fueled by a trio of double-digit scorers – including 22 points from program scoring leader Chrissy Baird – Wheaton North climbed out of an early 14-3 hole. The Falcons

Meadows stressed the Falcons’ focus on creating offense from their defense, so the Vikings worked to diversify their attack and be patient.

Loebel finished with nine points off the bench in her longest duty since December.

Starters Abby Novak and Sidney Santos both scored nine.

“Right away, we came out knowing that [the Falcons] would be really aggressive, and I think we all expected it,” Loebel said. “We stayed composed.”

Loberg, who helped steer the Geneva girls volleyball team to the program’s first sectional title in the fall, led that effort. She had to after sporting a surprise accessory at the beginning of her latest state series.

Loberg wore a walking boot on her left foot and missed Tuesday’s semifinal romp against Glenbard West after her injury over the weekend.

She tested her mobility during Wednesday’s practice and was diligent about icing the ankle, even taking treatment during

“It’s a little sore, but it’ll be fine,” Loberg said. “It’ll be good.”

With the Falcons positioning for one last charge, Loebel went to the foul line with Geneva leading, 67-60, and 2:38 left in the game. The free throw was off, but Loberg quickly positioned for the rebound and

gave the ball to an open McCloughan.

Hoisting Geneva’s sixth consecutive regional plaque, Loebel recalled that play and several others. It was easy to forget her ongoing physical therapy and that knee brace.

“I think a lot of it was adrenaline and the positivity and encouragement of my teammates,” Loebel said. “They were always there to pick us up.”

With Bayram saddled with foul trouble throughout, Frazier kept the Bulldogs productive in the paint, converting nine straight field goal attempts during a prolonged stretch covering parts of the second, third and fourth quarters.

“She went to work, honestly,” Fruendt said. “That’s what we’ve been telling her all year, ‘You’ve got to do that every single game.’ It was nice for her to show up and show out tonight. She just went into beast mode, honestly. She just didn’t back down to anyone, and I’m really proud of her and the rest of the team.”

The 22 points weren’t a career high for Frazier but Thursday was unquestionably one of the sophomore’s finest performances.

“We did a good job of reversing the ball, and when we moved it around a lot, I got a lot of inside looks from reversals and ball screens, so that was great,” Frazier

Batavia led, 27-22, at halftime, then gained separation during the third quarter, building a 17-point advantage entering the fourth.

It was the kind of dominant showing the Bulldogs uncorked multiple times during the season, but not so much down the stretch. Batavia went 2-3 in its final five regular season games and barely edged Streamwood to share a conference title it seemed likely the Bulldogs would win outright entering February.

Jensen said regaining the team’s form in time for regionals was mostly a matter

of remaining calm.

“I think we just had faith in the process,” Jensen said.

“We kept practicing hard.

We never changed anything.

We never did anything different in practice, we just kept practicing hard, kept trying to do all the right things. In the grand scheme of things, teams have good games and bad games. We didn’t have too many bad games, so I didn’t feel like it was time to panic.”

Willowbrook (23-5) was led by forward Josie Zabran, who scored 16 of her 20 points in the first half.

Perhaps channeling his ties to Batavia’s state championship football program, Jensen said this year’s team has gone beyond winning games, also forging deeper connections with youth players in town through the “Bulldog Buddy Club.”

“Somebody in grade school’s going ‘I want to wear Liza’s number, I want to wear Hannah’s number, I want to wear Erin’s number,’” Jensen said. “That’s where we get to.”

Wheaton Academy’s hopes flickering Warriors were trailing when power outage postpones regional game

“We’re shooting the lights out,” she told Nazareth Academy girls basketball coach Kimberly Connell.

For Elizabeth Melby, it was perhaps divine intervention.

“Our team kind of thought maybe it was a sign from God that we need to play harder – just go 100 percent,” the Wheaton Academy sophomore said.

“He gave us the ability, so we need to go hard.”

The two players were both referring to the power outage in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s Class 3A Regional championship game at Timothy Christian. At 8:11 p.m., the lights went out in the gym with the Roadrunners leading, 44-28. The final 6:49 of the game will be played at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the same site.

Wheaton Academy coach Beth Mitchell was asked if she had ever been involved in such a situation.

“Never, never, no,” she said. “You know, Mother Nature -- can’t do anything about it.”

High winds apparently

were to blame for several power outages in the area, with a ComEd service outage map showing estimated restoration times ranging from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Game officials and athletic directors from the schools involved gathered and decided to wait until 8:45 p.m. to see if power would return. When it didn’t, they sent players and spectators home.

“It was a weird feeling,” Melby said of being on the court when the lights went out. “I’ve never been in that kind of situation. … It was weird because it happened while the ball was out of

bounds. I don’t know. It was just crazy.”

Emergency lighting provided a small amount of illumination in the gym and fans used their cellphones to help one another find their way around in the dark.

The game was close until the third quarter, when Nazareth did begin shooting lights out from 3-point range, hitting a trio of shots from beyond the arc to help extend a 24-18 halftime lead to a 17-point cushion at the end of three quarters. Love had 8 points for the Roadrunners and senior Tetre’Anah Cross had 13.

Sophomore guard Jamie Netzley had 9 points for the Warriors, who will try to pull off a big comeback when play resumes.

“I think our help defense has to be better,” Mitchell said. “They beat us a lot off of the little cross scene, the little flex screen. … We’ve got to get on the offensive boards and we’ve got to attack the basket.

We’re just way too passive offensively.”

Nazareth holds a 26-20 advantage on the boards. Love had seven rebounds and Cross six. Molly Thorson had four rebounds off the bench for Wheaton Academy.

BATAVIA – A few members from the last Batavia girls basketball team to win a regional title showed up to Thursday’s IHSA Class 4A Batavia Regional final, hoping to witness history repeat itself 24 years later.

“I didn’t know anyone [on that team],” Batavia senior Hannah g u a r d L i z a Frazier Fruendt said.

“Erin [Bayram] did, actually, and one of them she babysits for, I think. She sent Erin the picture [from 1990] this morning, and that was the text I woke up to this morning. It’s pretty cool.”

Fruendt’s day only looked up from there. The Bulldogs put on a great show for their predecessors, ripping Willowbrook, 63-42, to capture the regional title on their home floor.

Batavia will plan a scout-

ing mission today to watch the York Regional final between Downers Grove North and York, the winner of which will play the Bulldogs in Tuesday’s Addison Trail Sectional semifinal.

The Bulldogs (20-9) cut down the nets, then posed for a long stream of photos to commemorate what coach Kevin Jensen considered a landmark night for his Liza program.

Fruendt “ W e ’ r e building to a place where we hope we’re in contention year in and year out, but that’s not necessarily where we’ve been,” Jensen said. “It’s a big deal.”

Traveling to Niles North for the state’s final sectional last week had netted the ideal result: No more teams leapfrogged St. Charles, which maintained its status as an at-large entry for this weekend’s eight-team IHSA state meet at Palatine.

St. Charles enjoyed the same elation last season, albeit as an automatic state qualifier after winning its sectional. The team finished eighth, however, heightening the objective to eliminate any jitters this time around.

“We started off strong on our first event, but, I mean, it’s just those state nerves,” said Gorniak, a senior.

“That’s the first year a lot of us had been there. For me, personally, that was the first year I’ve been in a meet like that where there’s so many people watching and it’s all the pressure. And I think just having that experience going into this year, it’ll help us a little more.”

Dugan was destined for another crack at the allaround this season after automatically qualifying for state as the fifth-place finisher at the Wheaton Warrenville South Sectional, where St. Charles finished second to Geneva in the team race.

“Practicing hard and hitting everything here, so when we go there to state it’s really just doing the same stuff,” Dugan said.

Naturally, that’s easier said than done in a sport that hinges so heavily on mental preparedness.

“Oh yeah, definitely, and especially state, you know,” Dugan said. “It’s going to be crowded and loud and it’s going to be intimidating, but I think we can handle it.”

St. Charles dueled with conference champion Geneva throughout the season before winning the York Regional, at which the Vikings did not compete. The meet’s sixth-seeded team is making the program’s sixth state appearance.

peland as perhaps the most eager to compete. Copeland suffered a partially-torn left ACL during the final event of last season’s conference meet and took three months off to heal.

She underwent surgery on her right knee as a sophomore.

“It’s kind of hard to describe, but the last two years I’ve been injured, and this year to be able to compete at state, it just makes me so happy,” Copeland said.

In the days since learning the season still harbors a team element – not just individuals – Lill has harped on staying healthy and positive.

“This year we’re really focused on it’s not only just making it to state,” she said, “but it’s making a statement while we’re there.”

Geneva enters this weekend’s IHSA girls gymnastics state meet as the fourth seed among eight teams.

That’s already one slot better than the Vikings’ finish last season, but this group aspires to reach the top. Expect athletes to act accordingly when competition begins at Palatine today.

“It’s my last meet, so I think I’m going to throw in as much as I can and see how it goes,” Geneva senior Dominique Brognia said.

“But I’m still keeping my routines clean and everything and working on that.

Don’t want to go crazy with it, but throw in some skills I haven’t done yet.”

Geneva scored a program-best 149.15 at the Jan. 30 Upstate Eight Conference meet, but seedings were based on sectional scores.

The Vikings won the Feb. 11 Wheaton Warrenville South Sectional with a 146.525.

Lyons (149.875), the Prairie Ridge co-op (148.525) and Fremd (147.675) performed ahead of Geneva at sectionals.

The Hawks’ Jonathan Toews, one of Canada’s alternate captains, talked about the “animosity’’ between the two teams, the farthest anyone has been willing to go. But, frankly, even that’s a stretch. Players from both teams are NHL teammates or have been teammates. Some share agents. If there’s animosity, it’s doing a pretty good imitation of admiration.

The U.S. beat Canada in pool play in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, then lost a rematch in overtime in the gold-medal game.

This feels more like a big brother-little brother rivalry, and Canada would like to let the Americans know who’s who. Toews never misses a chance to remind Kane who owns a gold medal from Vancouver and who doesn’t. But it has never gotten beyond the teasing stage.

Too bad the U.S.-Canada game doesn’t decide the gold. Then again, there’s a good chance it will, in essence.

“It seems like we were on a crash course to meet those guys, and we get them in the semifinal instead of the final, which would have been a little more storybook, to get that rivalry rekindled,’’ American David Backes said. “But to win the gold medal, you’re going to have to beat the best teams in this tournament.’’

CHAMPAIGN – Seven of Marmion’s nine qualifying wrestlers won their preliminary matches Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals as the IHSA state tournament opened at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center.

The Cadets, a traditional Class 3A power, got their quickest win from Lucas Warren, who delivered a fall in 28 seconds against Erik Velazquez of Minooka.

Senior 126-pounder Johnny Jimenez, a St. Charles resident eyeing the fourth state title of his career, defeated Ricky Vigil of Huntley by 16-0 technical fall in four minutes.

Marmion’s other winners included AJ Jaffe (120), Trace Carello (152), Nick Ferraro (170), Nathan Traxler (182) and Josh Meyers (195).

Batavia senior 220-pounder Connor McKeehan also earned a fall in his preliminary 3A bout, pinning Homewood-Flossmoor’s Devion May in 5:47. Keone Derain of St. Charles East was the lone member of the Saints’ three-athlete contingent to win his opening match, taking a 9-5

decision against Alton’s Qiante Wagner.

Athletes who lost their opening matches will hope not to fall victim to the “follow the leader” rule, in which a wrestler is eliminated if the opponent who defeated him in prelims loses in today’s quarterfinals.

Competing in 2A, Kaneland senior Justin Diddell lost a 3-2 decision to Taylorville’s Blake Hooper in his preliminary bout.

In Class 1A, Aurora Central Catholic senior 285-pounder Eduardo Gonzalez advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 overtime decision victory against previously unbeaten Tyler Ortmann of the Argenta-Oreana co-op. Mooseheart’s Joe Feemorlu, the first state-bound wrestler in program history, lost a 7-5 decision to Shelbyville’s Lucas Duckett.

(5) Aurora Central Catholic and (6) IMSA. In Class 4A, host St. Charles North is the No. 2 seed at its regional and St. Charles East is the No. 3 seed there, setting up a likely crosstown regional semifinal. Upstate Eight Conference River champion Larkin is the top seed at North.

Geneva and Batavia are both slotted in the 4A East Aurora Sectional, which was seeded 1 through 23, rather than by regional. Geneva was given the 6 seed and Batavia the 19 seed.

Postseason pairings with game times and dates will be released today. Regionals play for teams in classes 3A and 4A is scheduled to take place the week of March 3.

WHEATON – The St. Francis boys basketball team knocked off Chicago Bulls Prep Academy on Thursday, 60-32. Senior Kilian Brown scored all 18 of his points in the first half for the Spartans (13-8) while Zach Prociuk and Nick Fabianski added nine points each.

SOCHI, Russia – This is when you wish hockey players were trash talkers.

The United States will face Canada on a sheet of ice Friday night for the chance to play for an Olympic gold medal.

It’s about as big as a hockey game can get. It would make for much more drama if puck relations between the two countries were under a frost warning, but there doesn’t appear to be one in sight. A mutual respect is pervasive here, which is fine if you’re into that sort of thing.

The rivalry could be helped along by an American player saying of Canada: “That’s not a country. That’s a snow bank.”

Or a Canadian saying: “My two-year-old can skate better than those guys. And he’s a three-legged sled dog.’’

Something to capture the depth of bad feelings between the two countries. One problem: There doesn’t appear to be any bad feelings.

So, no trash. Not even any accidental littering. Canada is responsible for giving the world Justin Bieber, but I didn’t hear one American player point that out after practice Thursday.

What a wasted opportunity.

“You’ve got to respect them, but at the same time, I think we have a chance to try to prove that we’re in the same sentence with Canada,’’ Blackhawks wing Patrick Kane said.

“That’s something USA Hockey has been trying to do for a long time, is prove that we can play with the Canadians and the Russians and the Swedes and Finns consistently on a tournament basis. We have that chance (Friday). Hopefully we can take advantage of it.’’

Patrick, you are in the same sentence with Canada. It’s a one-sentence love note.

“We know we’ve got a good hockey team in front of us, and we’ve got to play our A game,’’ Canada’s Ryan Getzlaf said.

This game is for bragging rights, not that anyone ever brags in hockey.

I’m sure it bugs the Canadians to no end that we’ve taken their biggest export, hockey, and made it ours. We’ve caught up to them in hockey in the past decade. Not all the way, not yet, but we’re close.

Two dancers from the Geneva-based State Street Dance Studio were selected to compete in the Youth American Grand Prix, one of the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competitions that awards more than $250,000 annually in scholarships to leading dance schools worldwide.

Chanti Max, 11, of Batavia, recently competed in the Indianapolis, Ind., competition, which took place Feb. 14 through 16, and won the Hope Award – the overall award in her division. Max will now move onto the finals in April in New York.

Emma Sidari, 12, of St.

Charles, will compete in the Chicago competition on Friday, Feb. 28.

The mission of the Grand Prix is to provide educational and professional opportunities to young dancers, and act as a stepping stone to a professional dance career, according to the competition website. The competition is for dancers ages 9 to 19 years old. Dancers compete in ballet and contemporary styles of dance.

Max and Sidari were both hand selected from many potential dancers from the studio, according to a news release. Both dancers have the opportunity, if selected and given an invitation, to travel to New York to further their training as dancers.

Audi adds gusto to sport utility vehicle Audi widened its customer base by a few with the new SQ5 midsize five-passenger sport utility vehicle.

The SQ5 is the sport version of the “ordinary” Q5. Instead of 240 horsepower, the SQ5 has 354. Instead of a pure circular leather-clad steering wheel, the SQ5 has a flat- bottomed one. Trim upgrades are subtle inside and outside (four exhaust tips, for example, with two at each rear corner) but, essentially, the SQ5 is a Q5 on steroids.

If the pocketbook allows, perhaps the suggested starting price of a 2014 SQ5 at $51,900 is worth it. The 2014 Q5 starts out at $37,300. Those prices are for the base Premium model. Adding trim levels (Premium Plus, Prestige) can increase the price of either vehicle by more than $10,000.

Certainly the SQ5 is fast off the mark, and quiet about it as well.

Officially, the SQ5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds. Factory tests indicate 5.8 seconds, and this is with a shiftable (paddles) eight-speed automatic transmission. The Q5 has to settle for less than 7 seconds. This performance from the SQ5 is from a supercharged 3-liter, 354-horsepower, double overhead cam, direct injection V6. This 4,409-pound vehicle can fly. The SQ5 also is strong enough to tow a 4,400-pound trailer.

What was written in a review of the Q5 last fall pertains to the SQ5 this winter.

The temptation exists. Instead of one, why not buy two of them, one for the garage and the other for the driveway. That way, if someone in the family is off shopping in one, there is the other to use. Pocketbook size comes into play here.

Over and above the usual power features (four express up and down windows, door locks, exterior heated foldable mirrors, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and front leather seats), the SQ5 came with power panoramic (over two rows) sunroof, liftgate and rear folding seats. The controls to fold or raise the rear seats are just inside the carpeted and lighted cargo area. The liftgate can be operated by remote key fob or a control on the driver’s door panel. The liftgate opens and closes manually as well.

Niceties expected are armrests, cupholders, courtesy lights, cruise control, air conditioning and filtration, rain-sensing and heated nozzles with the front windshield wipers, roof rails with crossbars, and front and rear fog lights.

The sport-tuned suspension includes a five-link (front) and trapezoidal-link (rear) system, coil springs, gas shocks and stabilizer bars. The ride, as tested during a week of travel, was not as smooth as some competitors. Com-

petition in the small SUV marketplace comes from Cadillac, Infiniti, Acura, Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Brakes are discs, 13.6 inches in front and 13 inches in the rear, which contribute, from a speed of 60 miles per hour, to a stopping distance of about 110 feet, which is close to phenomenal.

Besides capable brakes, safety elements include traction and stability controls, an antilock braking system, front, side and overhead airbags, tethers and anchors for child seats, and safety belts with pretensioners and force limiters.

The vehicle rides on P255 tires mounted on 20-inch alloy wheels. After all, this is a sport version of the Q and larger wheels are required for perfor-

mance purposes.

Standard equipment includes xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, keyless start and entry, a 10-speaker sound system with CD and MP3 playback, SiriusXM satellite radio, iPod integration and Bluetooth.

There are aluminum door sill inlays, automatic dimming rearview mirror with an embedded digital compass, dual front sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors, and memory for two for driver’s seat, exterior mirrors and steering wheel.

Warranty coverage is four years or 50,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance. The first scheduled maintenance is free. The parameters are within one year and no more than 5,000 miles.

‘Pompeii’: Haven’t we seen this all before?

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post “Pompeii” has a killer ending. Billowing clouds of ash swallow the ancient Roman town and fireballs rain down from above; whole city blocks slide into the sea and a tsunami tears through the streets, leveling everything in its path.

When Mount Vesuvius erupts – feel free to direct spoiler complaints to Pliny the Younger – the movie is completely absorbing. You just have to sit through more than an hour of derivative plot and tired dialogue to get there.

The similarities between “Gladiator” and “Pompeii” are hard to overstate.

In both cases you have a warrior who’s enslaved after his family is murdered.

In both cases he turns out to have an exceptional talent for killing people; he befriends an African gladiator; and he falls in love with a woman leagues above his social standing.

But only in “Pompeii” does the protagonist talk to horses. Milo is the last member of a Celtic tribe of equestrians who are massacred by Roman soldiers led by Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland) and

his right-hand man Proculus (Sasha Roiz). Milo manages to escape his parents’ fate at age 6, but he’s scooped up, enslaved and, years later, becomes a killing machine who can enter an arena unarmed and take out three sword-wielding opponents. Milo (Kit Harington from “Game of Thrones”) could be a star if he weren’t stuck in provincial Londinium.

And so he’s sent to Pompeii. Along the way he meets Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of a powerful politician, and notices that the two people he’d most like to kill – Corvus and Proculus – also happen to be in town. To make matters worse, Corvus has his eye on Cassia. Most of the movie is taken up by scene after scene of gladiatorial games, but when Milo isn’t fighting, he’s sharing passionate looks with Cassia and steely glares with Corvus.

None of this really matters once the ground begins to shake and Vesuvius wakes from its slumber. Then the movie transitions from a “Gladiator” clone to a less successful Roland Emmerich catastrophe pic. Say what you will about the man behind “White House Down” and

“Independence Day,” but the character developments in those movies look pretty good compared to the scant dialogue and simplistic personalities in Milo’s world.

That being said, “Pompeii” does Emmerich one better in the special effects department. Paul W.S. Anderson, best known for the “Resident Evil” franchise and 2011’s “The Three Musketeers,” creates some harrowing simulations of the disaster. It’s enough to make you want him to ditch the story altogether, because as soon as we’re back on the ground with Corvus in a chariot chased by Milo, some of the images are so clearly computer-generated that the drama drains right out of the moment.

Harington’s star is on the rise. He’ll star opposite Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in the upcoming film “The Seventh Son,” and he’s signed on for the movie adaptation of the popular British television series “Spooks.” Yet his first starring role doesn’t showcase what he can do from an acting standpoint. Harington transformed his body for the role, but here’s the real disaster: His startlingly defined six-pack abs are the most memorable part of his character.

Last night he forgot to sign out of his email and I saw he has been

corresponding with a woman he met at the meetings. In her message she confided her problems finding a man. His reply was that she has been picking the wrong men, that he cares and that they need to talk face-to-face.

I wish I had never seen the email. Because of it, I can’t eat or sleep, worrying about what might possibly be going on. I don’t want to confront him because he has a nasty temper, yet I feel I must do something. But what? – Lost in Nowhere, Montana Dear Lost: Instead of “confronting” your husband, simply ask him if he has become this woman’s AA sponsor. It might explain why she is confiding in him, and why he suggested they meet face-to-face to talk, which could be entirely innocent. Does he have a history of cheating on you?

If something is going on, it would be better for your emotional health to know what you are dealing with. And if your husband responds with verbal or physical abuse because of his “nasty temper,” you should insist on marriage counseling or get out of there for your own safety.

Non-drug options exist for erectile dysfunction Dear Doctor K: Is acupuncture an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction?

Dear Reader: During an erection, arteries supplying blood widen, and veins leading blood away from the penis clamp down.

As a result, more blood is inside the penis, causing it to swell and become firm. It sounds simple, but getting to an erection requires extraordinary orchestration of blood vessels, nerves, hormones and, of course, the psyche. A hitch in any one of these elements can prevent an erection from happening. Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs have revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is trouble achieving or maintaining an erection. These drugs provide effective and safe treatment for about 70 percent of men with ED. But that still leaves a lot of men with ED who don’t respond to these pills. Other men do not want to use medication, or they can’t use ED drugs because of side ef-

One non-drug treatment used for ED is acupuncture, the ancient Chinese practice in which a practitioner inserts hair-thin needles into specific sites along the body’s “meridians.”

According to traditional beliefs, the body’s Qi (pronounced “chee”), or vital force, flows along these meridians. By stimulating specific acupoints, the practitioner aims to restore the proper flow of energy in the body. In treating ED, the acupuncture needles are placed in the wall of the abdomen.

Western scientists have a different explanation. They speculate that the needles stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Other theories claim the needles release neurotransmitters, chemicals that carry messages between nerve

endings.

Unfortunately, there just hasn’t been enough good research to determine if acupuncture is useful for ED. But there are other non-drug options. Ask your doctor about penile injections, urethral suppositories or a vacuum pump.

There are more studies of acupuncture as a treatment for chronic pain. Some scientists point to studies that compare acupuncture to “sham acupuncture,” in which the needles are deliberately not placed properly.

Such studies sometimes find that both real and sham acupuncture relieve pain. This suggests to them that acupuncture may work by causing a placebo effect.

Whether this is true or not, what matters to patients is that their condition has been improved. Some of my patients have had good relief of their pain.

Dear Marsha: According to a report by the United States Jaycees, about 4 million Americans are addicted to cocaine, and 12 million Americans are considered to be alcoholics.

These are both shocking statistics.

That means 16 million Americans cannot control their lives and live in constant confusion and turmoil. I’m sure your “wine at dinner” won’t escalate to an alcohol addiction, but always remember that every alcoholic started out having a first alcoholic drink.

Dear Abby: I have been married to a wonderful man for 17 years and we have two children. My life should be perfect, and it is -- until it’s time to visit my in-laws.

We don’t see them more than a few times a year, but I’ve taken to pleading work as an excuse not to see them on holidays or special occasions if I can avoid it. I have even spent Christmas at home alone because I can’t stand how verbally abusive my in-laws are.

My mother-in-law admits to being mean and nasty. She says she doesn’t care because she “hates people.” They are now pressuring my husband to move nearer to them. The thought makes me sick.

My life could have been so different if these relatives were nice, normal people. I wanted us to be friends. I’m a kind person, but I have never been good enough for them. I would never dream of saying some of the things they have said to me. They’re upper middle class and I’m “trash.” I never thought when I married my husband that his family would enjoy making me miserable.

In the auction, I like North’s jump to three no-trump. If South has a club honor, the chance of five or six club tricks is high.

Along with the spade ace and South’s known values, surely three no-trump will roll home.

It is just Lady Luck’s perversity that South has only two low clubs.

East wins the first trick with his spade king, then should return his remaining spade. Yes, here, a red-suit shift would work even better, but East should try to get the spade ace off the board.

South will win with his spade queen and run the club eight.

Now comes the key play – East must not take the trick. If East wins, declarer captures the next trick and drives out the club ace, while dummy still has the spade ace as an entry. But if East calmly allows South’s club eight to win, East will take the second club and shift to, probably, the diamond jack. Now dummy’s club suit is useless and the contract goes down one or two.

Afterward, no doubt South will complain that he was unlucky.

Job Description Work directly with independent contractors to ensure the daily effective, efficient and timely delivery of newspapers and other related materials.

Assist in delivering open/down routes in geographic area Ensure customer service goal is attained in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Resolve service and interpersonal issues through personal contact with customers, carriers, and Distribution Center Associates.

Recruit, screen, select, contract, advise and terminate contracts, when necessary, of independent contract carriers.

Maintain responsibility for the opening and closing procedures and operations of the distribution center, route management, and the proper distribution of all newspapers, inserts and other related materials to the contract carriers.

Analyze process and distribute carrier and district mail/reports.

Prepare and submit department reports and paperwork in a timely manner using Microsoft Word / Excel programs.

Ensure all routes are covered regardless of independent contract carrier issues or situations such as car problems, illness, weather, etc.

Redeliver to customers newspapers, Vacation Pacs or any other items as required.

Evaluate routes to determine rate and number of subscribers.

Analyze, design and implement formation of routes on an ongoing basis. The objective being to meet service criteria in the most cost effective manner.

Administer all single copy sales procedures.

Report to work on time (1:00 AM) and as scheduled.

Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills Good working knowledge of Word, Excel and e-mail.

Ability to use manual pallet jacks Ability to use office machines such as scanner, copier, calculator, computer and fax and various communication equipment.

Ability to read and execute a route list.

Demonstrate ability to read, write and speak English clearly, effectively and concisely with employees, customers, carriers, supervisors, managers and publisher.

Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
