Batavia RadioShack store to close Feb. 27

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The RadioShack store at 21 N. Randall Road, Batavia, is set to close its doors on Feb. 27.

The store is one of 1,784 locations RadioShack is closing nationwide after recently filing for bankruptcy. The electronics store opened in the mid-1990s, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

“I bought things there on occasion,” Schielke said. “I certainly patronized them.

Like every other business that comes and goes, you’re sorry to see them go.”

A store closing sale continues at the Batavia store, with items priced 30 percent to 70 percent off, according to signs in the store.

Despite the closing of the RadioShack store, Schielke

said Batavia is poised to become a “mini-tech corridor.”

He noted that the Verizon Wireless store at 350 Randall Road has expanded, and that AT&T recently opened a store at 201 N. Randall Road in a building that formerly housed Caribou Coffee.

In addition, Comcast has spoken to city staff about wanting to open a store in Batavia that would sell its products and services, Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said.

“I’m being told that we are on the cusp of kind of a restructuring of how technology is being serviced and supplied and delivered in the area,” Schielke said. “It apparently has become a highly competitive industry, and there’s a whole bunch of folks with different ideas and different products.”

Holmstad gallery to feature work of Batavia artist editorial@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Holmstad Town Center Gallery will feature the works of award-winning miniature painting artist Edward Cook. The exhibit will start Monday and run through April 20.

An artist’s reception is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m.

Feb. 28 in the Centrium.

The Holmstad, a nonprofit, faith-based continuing care retirement community operated by Covenant Retirement Communities, is at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia.

A Batavia resident, Cook is a self-taught artist who specializes in miniature paintings, according to a news release from The Holmstad.

His acrylic paintings tend

to reflect his love of nature, the release stated.

Rural landscapes, old buildings, barns, streams, waterfalls and water lilies are some of his favorite renditions, according to the release.

One of 38 American miniature artists invited to London to participate in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Miniature Society, which is under

the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II, Cook has received honors from the Miniature Artists of America and Whiskey Painters of America, the release stated.

The artist’s reception and refreshments are free. The exhibit featuring miniature paintings is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

COVER STORY Dysfunctional? Kaneland candidates face questions Board hopefuls appear at forum

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Candidates vying for positions on Kaneland’s school board were quizzed Thursday night about the perception that the board is dysfunctional. It was among the questions they faced at a public forum at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

Eight candidates are running for four available positions in the April 7 election.

Seven were in attendance Thursday night. Organizers said candidate Dan Nagel was out of town and unavailable to attend, and that he would be offered the opportunity to answer questions at a later date.

Candidates at the forum included incumbents Peter Lopatin, Gale Pavlak, Tony Valente and Teresa Witt, as well as newcomers Jerry Elliott, Ryan Kerry and Pamela Voorhees.

The forum was hosted by the Kaneland Education Association and the Kaneland Citizen’s Advisory Committee. Questions were asked by Patrick Crimmins, the vice chairman of the advisory committee. Crimmins employed an aggressive style of questioning, pressing for details on answers at times.

After each candidate opened with an introductory statement, the candidates immediately faced the question of whether they believed that the board was dysfunctional, and, if so, what they would do about it.

Some candidates argued that dysfunctional would not be the proper word to describe the board.

Valente said he instead would describe the board as combative. He said debate and disagreement are not necessarily bad things. He said if a board member expresses an opinion that might be different than the majority, that member might be subject to an at-

“With our school board, there’s a want to have a 7-0 vote every time,” Valente said, describing that as “problematic.”

Elliott said he wouldn’t call the board dysfunctional.

Instead, he would call the process democratic. He said people want to be heard. He said a more significant issue might be that the district itself has a morale problem. He said the

district is “magnificent.”

Kerry said the public perception is that the board is dysfunctional, and he added that “yes, I would say the board is dysfunctional.” He said board members have a responsibility to model proper behavior.

“I would say that new board members would help,” Kerry said. “That’s why I’m running.”

Lopatin, a board member who was appointed to fill the

vacancy created when Joe Oberweis moved out of the district, said he was “shocked” at the behavior of some board members when he attended meetings before his appointment. Valente previously had mentioned an incident in which Lopatin became angry, and Lopatin acknowledged that and said board members sometimes “get caught up in the emotion of what we do.” He said he had printed out a code of conduct and signed it as a reminder to keep emotions in check. He said, ultimately, “this is about the students.”

“I think the board is, at times, dysfunctional,” Lopatin said.

Pavlak, the board’s secre-

tary, said the board is “out of balance, or dysfunctional.”

She said it is extremely important that board members “set a good example.” She said more than one person asks questions, and no member is more important than the others, “no matter how loud they may be.”

Crimmins reminded Pavlak that the question wasn’t asked specifically about Valente.

Pavlak said it was important that all board members act in a calm manner.

Witt, the board’s vice president, said it’s natural that seven people who are very passionate about “something as near and dear to us as children” are going to have some fiery exchanges. She said at times, barbs have been exchanged, back and forth.

“We are sometimes dysfunctional,” she said.

She added when board members “lose our cool, we don’t get the work done.” She said the public doesn’t get to see board members at their best, which she said was in closed session, when reporters are not there.

“We are not always dysfunctional,” she said.

When asked what board members can do about it, she mentioned a self-evaluation, with guidance from the state board. She said some board members have been resistant.

“Maybe we can do an evaluation on April 7,” Crimmins said.

Voorhees said she has attended meetings of other districts to see whether what went on at Kaneland was the norm.

“I think it’s out of sync,” she said.

She said board members should move forward together after a vote, regardless of what a member’s stance on the issue had been. At that point, she said, the discussion had been made and the majority had been established. But at times, she said, a board member later will mention “I didn’t vote for it,” if an issue comes up later.

“I see a lot of items brought up, but not solutions,” she said.

District revises plans in reaction to consumer price index change

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An unexpected change in the consumer price index has altered the St. Charles School District 303 Board’s plans to give tax relief to residents.

The board members in December voted unanimously to approve a resolution stating their intent to abate – or reduce – the debt service so the overall increase for taxpayers will be limited to an average 1.5 percent increase or less.

Board members now are considering an average 2 percent increase because of an unexpected change in the consumer price index, said Seth Chapman, the district’s assistant superintendent of business services.

The district’s projection in October was that the con-

sumer price index-urban, or CPI-U, would be 2.1 percent.

District officials found out in January that the CPI-U for December was actually 0.8 percent because of lower fuel prices, according to a summary update of the district’s fiveyear forecasting model.

In a report to the Public Health Committee on Wednesday, he said the agency received about 50 applications from a soft push.

will be orientation, hopefully next month, Youngsteadt said.

“We’re very excited about this,” he said.

The volunteer program is among a number of changes taking place at Animal Control, which is at 4060 Keslinger Road in Geneva.

It is working to replace its website – www.co.kane.il.us/ AnimalControl – with www. kanecountypets.com.

The new site should launch in March, Youngsteadt said, noting any de-

“We’re really trying to make this a comprehensive website,” Youngsteadt said.

Animal Control also is moving forward with new software that can provide such data sets as animal and owner information, bite reports, citations and tag registration, Youngsteadt said.

It was fine, she said, except for the at-home distractions.

But these days, the wife of State Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva, has a turn-key office in Geneva’s newest business, 25N Coworking, 25 N. Third St. “It is a real good opportunity for me,” Andersson said while attending the company’s ribbon-cutting and open house Thursday. “I just come in with my things and I can work out of here beautifully. You’ve got 24/7 access, so if I get inspired at 3 a.m., I can come here and start working. … This is taking my business to the next level.”

The co-working concept provides a professional environment for virtual employees, freelance workers and entrepreneurs to work, have meetings and network. Mara Hauser, founder of 25N Coworking, said after looking for the right location to establish a co-working site in the sub-

urbs, this location in Geneva was the best.

“We found a jewel,” Hauser said.

The 25N Coworking site has 10,000 square feet as the anchor tenant in the former U.S. Bank building. Ashland Ventures LLC chairman Paul Kawalek, who owns the building, said his company invested more than $500,000 to renovate it.

The co-working site features private meeting rooms, desks, conference rooms – where whole walls are writeon wipe-off boards – private offices, a shower and an open area where members can eat and participate in twice-weekly events.

Even the old bank’s former vault is a conference room.

CASA Kane County is a member of 25N Coworking and uses one of its conference rooms for twice-a-week training sessions, Hauser said.

About 100 people attended the open house and tours.

Mayor Kevin Burns praised Hauser’s hard work to bring the co-working concept to Geneva.

“We thank you for ... your vision for bringing new light to North Third Street, and for having the stick-to-itiveness to be here today,” Burns said as the ribbon was cut.

Michael Olesen, owner of Stockholm’s, said he has watched the building’s transformation over the past few months as he’s walked between the restaurant and his other business as a financial advisor.

“I think it’s a wonderful, creative use of the space – something that has needed to be done here for a long time – and I think this is a fantastic opportunity,” Olesen said. “I really wish them well.”

Although he does not need the co-working service himself, Olesen said he can see its value.

“The nice thing is it’s going to bring more people downtown, who will then be around to utilize the other businesses and services of the downtown,” Olesen said. “I think it’s a win-win, not only for those looking for work space, but for the whole business community downtown.”

OBITUARIES CHRISTOPHER A. LUDY Christopher A. Ludy, age 56 of Geneva, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015, at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, from complications related to a motor vehicle accident that occurred January 31, 2015.

Born in Aurora, and raised in Wheaton, he was the youngest son of Donald C. and Elaine L. (Holstein) Ludy.

He was the owner/operator of Masterpiece Painting, Inc. since the 1980’s.

Chris graduated from Wheaton Central High School in 1976, and attended the University of Minnesota.

He enjoyed cooking, golfing, fishing, skiing, and playing hockey with the Ice Holes hockey team. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and he was dearly loved by many longtime friends. He will be greatly missed.

Chris is survived by his wife of 24 years, Barbara A. (Dooley) Ludy; two children, Marissa and Ciana Ludy; 4 siblings, Donald (Linda) Ludy of West Chicago, Illinois, Emil (Pam) Ludy of Bloomington, Illinois, Lynne (Mead) Kirkpatrick of Issaquah, Washington, and Laurel

Bird nesting materials ignite, causing damage to Geneva home GENEVA – An accidental fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to a Geneva residence Wednesday, according to a city news release.

About 7 p.m., a collection of bird nesting materials reportedly ignited in the attic space of 945 Whittington Drive after coming in contact with the

chimney flue pipe.

The residents called 911 to report their chimney was on fire, and an upstairs bedroom was filling with smoke, according to the release. The release indicates the three residents safely exited the home.

Upon arrival, Geneva firefighters found an active fire in the chimney and upgraded the alarm to bring additional fire crews from St. Charles, Batavia and Elburn, as well as

When you understand how big a threat it poses – not just to labor rights, environmental protection, food safety, access to medicines, Internet freedom, etc., but also to democracy itself – then start calling your elected officials and tell them to vote no on fast track for the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

If the TPP is so terrible, why would our elected officials support it? The answer is that the big corporations want it, and – these days – they generally get what they want.

Proponents of the treaty acknowledge that if the American people knew what was in that treaty before the vote was taken, it could never pass.

Therefore they want Congress to pass fast track legislation. Fast track, otherwise known as trade promotion authority, is a legislative mechanism for ramming a trade treaty through Congress with no amendments or filibuster. The American people would never know what hit them.

If Congress votes no on fast track, the Trans-Pacific Partnership will likely be defeated. If they vote yes, it will likely be passed.

Snapchat is like MySpace but with more money

By KATIE BENNER Bloomberg News Snapchat is reportedly trying to convince investors that it’s worth up to $19 billion. There are lots of market-driven reasons why the company might succeed, which I’ll mention further down. But first, before all the late-stage, last-one-in investors open up their wallets, let’s consider that Snapchat could be the MySpace of mobile social networking.

The company has the right idea – no one wants all of their messages to live forever. It’s won over the kids that marketers want so very much to reach. Snapchatters are mostly between the ages of 13 and 25. (Even early on, founder Evan Spiegel knew his audience.) There are rumors that the site has between 100 million and 200 million monthly users, which makes it almost as big as Twitter.

Oh, and it’s only four years old.

But Snapchat, the app, is sort of a mess. It’s not all that intuitive.

I’m not just saying that because I’m well outside the target demographic (young and comfortable with the

idea that disappearing messages don’t disappear). This has been confirmed by the actual young people who patiently walked me through the app, and by Re/code’s fairly entertaining Snapchat primer. As Snapchat builds out more features on top of this interface – such as Discover – the service gets busier and more complicated.

It’s not as easy to figure out as Instagram or a messaging service like WhatsApp. Anonymous messaging apps such as Yik Yak (disappearing messaging’s sociopathic cousin) are easier to use, too. But none of these services can do what Snapchat does – seem to make our messages disappear. And so Snapchat has carved out a first-mover position in a hot mobile area.

That brings me back to MySpace, which was by some measures the most visited website in the U.S. after existing for only three short years. It was a weird, loud, cluttered site with annoying pop-ups and distractions, but it was popular and fun. What could go wrong? When MySpace was at the top of its game, Facebook

opened up its clean, simple, comparatively easy-to-use site to all. And, well, you know the rest.

Now back to Snapchat’s fundraising rumors. Bloomberg said that it wants to raise up to $500 million at a valuation of up to $19 billion. Investors have been more than happy to pump money into late-stage private companies like Snapchat, especially when they think they’ve identified the winner in the category, such as Uber (valued at $41 billion) and Xiaomi (valued at $45 billion). Investors including mutual funds and hedge funds are trying to capture some upside growth while startups are still private. The law firm Fenwick & West said that last quarter Silicon Valley startups raised money at higher valuations: The average price increased by 115 percent, compared to 79 percent the quarter before.

Sure, the chances that Snapchat can get what it wants from investors are good, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

ENEVA – A certain level of blissful ignorance factored into Claire Ginsberg’s IHSA girls gymnastics all-around state title last year.

Ginsberg acknowledged it was “a shock” when she learned she was the state’s top all-around gymnast as a freshman after the first day of the two-day competition, a feeling shared by her teammates, including big sister Grace Ginsberg.

“It was so exciting,” recalled Grace Ginsberg, now a senior. “We really had no idea. That wasn’t really even on our minds at all. We didn’t even know the all-around awards were Friday, so when they called her name, we were like ‘Whoa!’ That got everyone really excited.”

Claire Ginsberg might not be as naive this time around as the state meet begins tonight in Palatine, but she appears to be even better positioned to post flashy scores.

Geneva coach Kim Hostman noted an injury early last season limited Claire Ginsberg’s freshman year repertoire, saying she’s been more impressive as a sophomore.

“We worked a lot over the summer to get skills back in her routines and work through skills,” Hostman said. “So she has a new vault, she has a different series on beam, her bars are a little stronger this year and on floor she has a couple new skills as well.

“Compared to last year, I think she’s a lot more consistent this year, a lot more confident in herself and her abilities and every aspect of her gymnastics. So I think going in this year, she’ll go in with a lot more confidence.

On Wednesday, she started and starred throughout her St. Charles North postseason debut. The increased workload and 23-point outburst weren’t the only things invigorating her.

“I like it a lot, how we play defense now,” Jakaitis said. “We used to play zone last year, so now I get to play man.

I like it a lot. You get more involved.”

North and crosstown rival St. Charles East certainly share a disposition for defense entering tonight’s Class 4A St. Charles North Regional final.

Whatever side claims the 2014-15 rubber match – the North Stars (19-8) and Saints (20-7) both won on their home floors in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play – it’s likely the victor will have the sweat equity to show for it.

“Of course,” Saints sophomore guard Samantha Munroe said. “I think our motto is, ‘Defense wins games.’ That’s what our focus really has been on.”

East coach Lori Drumtra reiterated the need for that drive to players after the Saints sloshed through a five-game skid bridging the end of December and first half of January.

One of those defeats came at North, a 61-43 winner when the teams met Jan. 17.

“Our team effort wasn’t really there,” Saints senior wing Kyra Washington said. “I’m hoping that this time that we play them, it’s there. And I hope we win.”

That last part is a given, of course, not unlike North’s commitment to creating havoc with the defensive basics.

With coach Sean Masoncup dialing up the North Stars’ man-to-man base defense and an athletic press, North limited Glenbard East to 20 percent shooting in the first half of Wednesday’s regional semifinal, a 53-20 romp.

“We try to talk about keeping our hands up and make sure that we’re always in a stance and moving our feet,” junior forward Morgan Rosencrants said. “And having a strong help-side.

Knowing that we have that strong helpside helps us be able to pressure more and rely on others.”

made sure that we got back on defense, because we know they’re strong shooters and they have a strong post player,” Rosencrants said.

East enters tonight on a nine-game winning streak, with none of those victories coming by less than 11 points.

No question, defeating the North Stars on their own floor would sweeten the feat of earning a regional title, especially given what happened in the teams’ most recent meeting.

“We switched it around a little bit.

So did [Masoncup]. They switched it around. They pressed,” Drumtra said.

“I don’t think there’s really any secrets that you can really pull out. We know each other so well. I think it’s going to come down to really good execution and good decision-making.”

“Yeah, we talk about the past sometimes. I think since we first started, when you’re a little kid, you don’t really care as much. It’s just for fun,” Derain said. “Back then, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, obviously. Now, I think both of us have gotten a ton better.

Keone Derain offered playful, would-be fightin’ words for St. Charles East wrestling teammate and longtime pal Ramon Lopez before turning sentimental.

“Sometimes I get sick of him, I’m not going to lie, but that’s my best friend,” Derain said. “That’s my practice partner. I want what’s best for him, and I’m sure he wants the same for me, too.”

Keone Derain This past weekend, both athletes at last made their late February itineraries overlap, qualifying for the IHSA Class 3A state Ramon Lopez tournament in Champaign.

State preliminaries at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center began Thursday, with Derain at 152 pounds, Lopez at 170 and plenty of reminiscing in between.

“We’ve been wrestling partners since we were, like, 7 years old. We’re like brothers,” Lopez said. “So, I mean, we do get on each other’s nerves, but it’s fun, and we like to push each other in the room. Him and the coaches just made me better a lot this year.”

As a sophomore and junior, Lopez especially craved Derain’s state series mettle.

First as a 145-pounder in 2013 and then at 152 last season, Derain advanced to Champaign as part of the Saints’ state contingent.

Lopez, meantime, fell one match short both seasons, losing the wrestleback semifinal that would have put him in the sectional third-place bout and would have assured him a trip to state.

He traveled with the team, drilled with Derain at Illinois’ Huff Hall and screamed “TWO!” from the stands for each of his friend’s takedowns. In many respects, Lopez did everything but slip into a singlet himself.

“I still got to experience it,” he said. “I just didn’t get to compete.”

NEW YORK – Broadcaster Wayne Randazzo, a 2002 St. Charles East alumnus who called Kane County Cougars games on radio for the past three seasons, has accepted a position as a preand post-game host for the New York Mets’ flagship station, AM710 WOR, the station announced Thursday.

“I want to thank the Mets and WOR for this amazing opportunity,” Randazzo said in a news release. “The Mets fan base is one of the most passionate in all of baseball. I look forward to working alongside Howie Rose and Josh Lewin, one of the best radio broadcast teams in baseball, to bring Mets fans great memories for many seasons to come. This is certainly an exciting time for the Mets and fans.”

Bears need to draft a quarterback, just not right away BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush If the Heisman Trophy winner Mariota falls in the draft, it will be because of questions about how his game will transfer from the Oregon offense to a pro style scheme.

“I guess you could say it’s a little bit of motivation,” Mariota said about those who doubt him.

“There’s a purpose of why I’m here and why I’m standing in front of you and that’s because I love the game, I want to be part of this game, I want to be part of this game for a long time. My motivation isn’t to prove anybody wrong. My motivation is to make a dream come true for me.”

Mariota seems like a fine young man, but the majority of my sources are telling me he isn’t worth the risk in the top 10 or 15 picks of this draft, and the Bears cannot afford to blow the No. 7 pick.

Brett Hundley of UCLA will probably be the third quarterback off the board and should be there when the Bears pick in the second round. Interestingly, it seems like he might have a Chicago connection of sorts too.

“I love Donovan [McNabb] to death. I talk to him, even to this day. He has helped me out through this journey and this process. He’s a smooth quarterback and he’s unique at what he does, and I think that’s the

same thing that I bring while playing football.”

Unfortunately, there are enough questions about Hundley’s game that he isn’t worth the risk in the second round, either.

It’s possible, if Baylor’s Bryce Petty is your cup of tea, the Bears could grab him in the third round. But with him trying to transition from the most gimmicky offense of all, that’s a pick you’d hate to waste too.

So, before I go, here’s a plan and a name for you that might make the most sense. The Bears have to get pass rushers, safeties and a wide receiver who can play right now and that would be the best use of their early round picks.

It is possible the Browns would give the Bears the 12th and 19th picks in the first round to come up and get Mariota.

There will be very good pass rushers, wideouts and safeties available in those spots.

“He’s a young guy that really works hard and did a lot of things blending what we did as well as what Peyton [Manning] was used to doing and working with Peyton. They had a great relationship, and so Adam really did a great, great job with us.”

U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Ted Lauzen to represent Team USA KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com AURORA – U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Ted Lauzen of Aurora has qualified to represent the United States and Team USA as a member of the USA Modern Pentathlon World Cup Team.

Ted Lauzen Lauzen is competing against the top international pentathletes at the 2015 event in Sarasota, Florida. The USA Modern Pentathlon consists of five different sports: swimming, fencing, equestrian show-jumping, shooting and running.

Prior to earning a spot on Team USA, Lauzen completed a combat tour as a Marine light attack helicopter pilot in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan.

He has been stationed at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with his wife, Sarah, and their young daughter, Caroline.

Lauzen is the son of Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and his wife, Sarah.

One afternoon, out of curiosity, I accessed his medical records. In his file it was noted that he is high risk for STDs. In fact, he was treated for two different ones some years back.

I have been tested for STDs during all my annual physicals, and the results were always negative. I think it’s because we often go for weeks without any sexual contact.

What should I do with this information? Lingering cough after a cold can be attacked on many fronts Dear Doctor K: I had a chest cold.

I feel better, but I’m still coughing a lot. This has been going on for more than three weeks. Why am I still coughing?

Dear Reader: Most likely, you had bronchitis, an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. Bronchitis is usually caused by an infection – viral or bacterial. The bronchial tubes are air passages connecting the lungs to the windpipe. Bronchitis usually starts with an upper respiratory illness that spreads from the nose and throat down into the airways. (I’ve put an illustration showing how bronchitis affects the airways on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Your immune system often is able to wipe out the infection in about five to 10 days. However, for several different reasons, symptoms may persist – as they have with you.

Though your body usually fights off the initial respiratory infection promptly, your bronchial tubes can remain inflamed and sensitive for several weeks, causing you to continue coughing.

The inflammation also can create spasm or irritability of the bronchial tubes: They intermittently tighten up suddenly, causing coughing. This can produce other

Komaroff symptoms as well: • A tight feeling in your chest • Wheezing • Shortness of breath when you exert yourself • Mild fatigue To treat your irritable bronchial tubes, your doctor may prescribe an inhaler of what is called a bronchodilator medicine. Albuterol is one commonly prescribed. Bronchodilators are used by people with asthma to ease breathing during an asthma attack.

If this does not control the cough, you may also need a corticosteroid inhaler. Corticosteroids can help to reduce inflammation of the airways. In rare cases, you might need to take an oral corticosteroid, such as prednisone, for several days.

Another cause of a persistent cough after bronchitis is sinus inflammation, leading to post-nasal drip. Junk from inflamed sinuses drops down into the back of the throat. The throat has sensitive areas that when stimulated cause a person to cough. Post-nasal drip

can stimulate them. An over-thecounter saline spray can help to remove mucus and irritants from your nose. It will also help to moisturize your nasal passages.

A persistent cough also can be caused by thick mucus in the bronchial tubes. Try drinking plenty of fluids to make the mucus thin, watery and easy to cough up.

Warm, moist air also can loosen mucus. Try using a vaporizer or humidifier; standing in or near a hot shower; or drinking hot tea or soup.

In some cases, a person continues to cough for weeks after bronchitis because of a stubborn infection. Most cases of bronchitis are caused by viruses. But bronchitis can also be caused by bacteria, which might not yet be eliminated by your immune system. If your doctor suspects a bacterial infection, he or she may prescribe an antibiotic.

There’s usually a fixable reason for a persistent cough after bronchitis. If the home remedies I’ve recommended don’t work, talk to your doctor.

Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend and I have not communicated since we had a huge argument last Saturday night. It all started because I thought he was flirting with another girl when I went to the powder room to put on some makeup. I saw him and this girl laughing together. When this girl saw me coming, she split the scene. When I asked him why he was laughing with another girl, he told me it was none of my business.

I said it was my business and that triggered the argument.

I have now found out that the girl was his older sister’s best friend and he’s known her for over five years. In this case, it sounds like you both were partially at fault, but I suggest you be first to say, “I’m sorry.” If your boyfriend had written to me, I’d have given him the same advice.

Dr. Wallace: Matt and I started dating when we were 16. Our relationship had no middle ground; it was either good or bad, so we stopped dating. A year later we started dating again. This time the highs were higher than ever and the lows were the lowest.

We will graduate in June, and we both plan to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville. Matt wants us to be a couple again at the University, but I have

There is no evidence, he added, of any link between acne and foods except one: High iodine found in shellfish and some table salts may aggravate existing acne.

In yesterday’s deal, declarer needed to finesse in clubs three times through his right-hand opponent. But since he had no other dummy entry left, that required, on the first round, leading the lowest club in the dummy that could win the trick.

That is a reliable rule, but when a double finesse (two finesses in the same suit) is involved, a different approach might be needed. In this deal, West starts the defense against four spades with the club king and another club.

After South ruffs at trick two, how should he continue?

South’s jump to game is reasonable, given the big trump fit.

Declarer has five potential losers: two hearts, two diamonds and one club. He has only eight top tricks: seven spades and one heart. So, to make his contract, South needs to find East with at least one heart honor and the diamond ace. But that might require leading three times from the dummy: to take two heart finesses and to lead toward the diamond king.

With only two trump entries, care is required.

Declarer should cash his spade king, lead a spade to dummy’s queen and play a low heart to his jack, not run the 10 or nine.

West wins and leads the club queen. South ruffs, crosses to dummy’s spade ace, and runs the heart 10.

When that wins, declarer can play a diamond toward his king to get home.
