Williams, Kramer seeking GOP nod for Kane sheriff

The winner of the March 18 primary – either Kane County Lt. Kevin Williams or retired Kane County Lt. Donald Kramer – will face Democrat Willie Mayes Sr. in the general election.

Sheriff Pat Perez, a Democrat, is not Lt. Kevin seeking anoth- Williams er term.

Both Republican candidates live in Geneva and have decades of law enforcement experience.

Williams has spent nearly 22 years with the sheriff’s office. His experience includes investigating street gangs, working as an undercover narcotics officer and building partnerships with school officials, local governments and the community.

In the past several years, Williams said, he has spoken with parents and grandparents about heroin and has participated in a heroin panel. If elected, he said, he would continue to educate the public about the drug as a way to combat its growing abuse.

Kramer said heroin use is a major problem, but identifying kids who need help is critical in solving that issue.

That’s why he would spend more time investigating juvenile delinquency, a “serious problem” that often leads to involvement in drugs and al-

cohol, he said.

Kramer doesn’t intend to come in and gut the organization, he said, but he would want to create a strong administrative structure that oversees the operation of each division.

Williams said he would take programs Perez incorporated and blend them with his ideas.

For example, he would like to continue and expand the sheriff’s office use of social media to make the office more accessible to residents.

As a manager, Williams described himself as a “proven leader” who scolds in private and praises in public. He would want to ensure employees have an equal chance for promotion, he said.

Kramer described himself as “team builder” who would promote a healthy work environment and would incorporate more input from employees.

Earlier this month, Kramer announced his choice for undersheriff is David Wagner, the office’s current undersheriff.

Williams said Wagner is a great asset to the sheriff’s office and would be part of his staff but not as undersheriff.

Three hopefuls vie for votes in 65th District

bschory@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Three candidates vying for the GOP nomination in the 65th Illinois Representative District faced off Wednesday in a debate sponsored by the Kane County Young Republicans.

About 22 people attended at the Hawthorne Hill Nature Center where Steve Andersson and Dan Ugaste, both attorneys who live in Geneva, and Debbie Miller, a business owner from Elgin, answered questions about their candidacy.

The three will appear on the March 18 primary ballot, seeking the seat currently held by State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, who is not seeking re-election.

Miller said there was “one glaring difference” between her and the two other candidates in that she is not an attorney.

“I’m not putting down attorneys, but we have many, many more attorneys than any other profession” in Springfield, Miller said. “I think we need different voices in the General Assembly.”

Andersson, who serves on the Geneva Library Board and represents municipalities as an attorney, said he would find common ground between the two parties.

“And I would shine a light on the abuses” by Democrats, Andersson said. “It is not to embarrass people, but programs and conduct that is abusive.”

Ugaste, who said he represented businesses in workman’s compensation claims, agreed with Andersson, “especially if the other party is taking advantage.”

lems, including being more business friendly and not supporting any increased taxes or fees.

Andersson said he would work to get the budget back in line and make the state more business friendly.

“I am an elected official with a proven record of balancing the budget and reducing taxes over time,” Andersson said.

Miller, a sixth-generation resident of the Elgin area, said she was well-qualified to bring jobs to Illinois, “which I think is the most important thing.”

“Yes, we need to work on the budget,” Miller said. “People are suffering today and they need jobs to bring them out of that suffering.”

Ugaste said he is seeking election “primarily to fix our own fiscal house.”

Although all three stood against the graduated income tax, Ugaste charged that Andersson supported President Barack Obama’s progressive or graduated income tax.

“It was completely incorrect to suggest I was supporting President Obama,” Andersson

said. “I was supporting Speaker John Boehner’s plan to avoid the fiscal cliff.”

Ugaste also rebutted Miller’s and Andersson’s qualifications, saying representing municipalities, being on an elected board or owning a business does not qualify them to serve in the legislature.

To a question about their most important issue unique to the 65th, Miller said Elgin used to be “on the map” for its manufacturing base.

“And I’d like to bring that back. We need good paying jobs so they can have good lives,” Miller said. “And to do that, what we need to do is support our technical schools so we can have the best technical employees.”

All the candidates supported public transportation.

Ugaste said he hoped to get the four mass transit agencies to work together to improve efficiencies.

Andersson said transportation and others were “all good programs,” but he urged a forensic audit “to see where the fat is” and cut programs that

are the most costly and least effective.

“We need to keep good programs,” Miller said. “I don’t believe in austerity, I believe in prosperity.”

Ugaste said if the mass transit system is improved, it will relieve gridlock and congestion on the roadway “and you will see this area prosper.”

In terms of pension reform, Ugaste said pensions already earned should not be touched.

“We need to uphold those

obligations,” Ugaste said. “We need to look at reforming pensions ... to make them viable.”

Miller said the pension system needs to be affordable, honoring the ones who already earned it and the taxpayers who are paying for it.

Andersson said he did not like breaking the pension promise, but the alternative was to “do nothing and watch it collapse.”

Though unfair, cutting pensions was “the least bad option,” Andersson said.

Andersson advocated a defined contribution plan like a 401(k) for future hires.

“None of the teachers are at fault,” Andersson said. “I apologize to them, but if we don’t do something, they end up with nothing.”

All three also supported vouchers and charter schools as a way to bring diversity and competition to schools.

The primary winner will run in the general election in November. So far, no Democratic candidate has been named. The 65th District covers areas of Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, South Elgin, Pingree Grove, Hampshire and Huntley.

Local restaurant seeks grant, loan to help with expansion

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen Tuesday recommended giving Aliano’s Ristorante a $25,000 tax increment financing grant and a $75,000 low interest loan so Aliano’s can reconfigure its kitchen and expand its business.

The full City Council is set to vote on the recommendation next month. Aliano’s opened in December 2011 at 90 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia.

Tax increment financing is a tool that allows municipalities to earmark property tax revenues from increases in assessed values within a designated TIF district.

kitchen area and make upgrades to kitchen equipment.

In addition, he proposes to open Aliano’s Express, a carry-out, delivery and catering business at 70 N. Island Ave., immediately south of his existing restaurant. Aliano’s Express plans to offer more than 30 entrées.

“I want to do a large amount of catering and delivery,” Aliano told aldermen during the city’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting.

The project is expected to cost $208,000, which includes about $108,250 for the expansion and $99,750 to purchase equipment and for other expenses. The low interest loan would be for five years at an interest rate of 2.75 percent.

ing owner Alex Group will replace an existing, undersized and faulty grease trap with a new 55-gallon, code-compliant trap.

In a memo to aldermen, Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston said that the existing grease trap cannot adequately handle grease refuse from the existing kitchen operations, and that grease sometimes enters the city’s sanitary sewer system.

The Alex Group also will install a kitchen floor drain system as the kitchen currently is without floor drains.

The Alex Group plans to apply for a downtown matching grant between $10,000 and $20,000 to help pay for the project, Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said.

Batavia aldermen to decide future of Thomle building

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen have to decide how to proceed with the redevelopment of the city-owned Thomle building in downtown Batavia after Batavia business owner Michael Grudecki recently pulled his proposal to turn the building into a martini lounge.

His proposal was one of two current proposals for the building at 2 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia. Since 1997, the city has owned the building, which was built in 1876.

In pulling his proposal, Grudecki, president of Vignette Home Decor in Batavia, said he was tired of the city dragging out the process. Grudecki said he first approached city officials in February 2012 with the idea for his proposed Tini Lounge.

A proposal now before aldermen involves redeveloping

the building for a restaurant and apartments. St. Charlesbased Corcoran Commercial Real Estate in December presented aldermen with its proposal to acquire the Thomle building and combine it with the 4-6 E. Wilson St. building to develop restaurant space on the first floor and five apartments on the upper levels.

The project is estimated to cost $1.8 million.

The company is seeking $590,000 in city grant funds to help pay for the project, and a transfer of the Thomle building for $1.

Corcoran has projected the project will generate $344,500 for the city’s tax increment financing district through 2027 and that the city should receive a total of $315,000 in retail sales tax revenues through 2027.

City staff has recommended that it be authorized to negotiate with the Corcoran Group and see if a reasonable agreement can be worked out.

Piazza is director of sales and marketing at The Herrington Inn & Spa, which is along the Fox River in Geneva.

The Herrington has been prone to flooding in the past.

“It’s really not too bad right now,” Piazza said Wednesday afternoon, in talking about

the level of the Fox River. “We might not see a problem until Friday. It depends on how much rain comes down.”

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch that is in effect for Kane and surrounding counties through Thursday afternoon. There is a slight chance of snow, sleet or freezing rain early Thursday morning.

Locally, heavy rain also is possible Thursday morning, which – when combined with melting snow – could result in some flooding, according to the

National Weather Service.

Piazza said The Herrington has sandbags at the ready if the Fox River reaches dangerously high levels.

“We have at least 1,000 instant sandbags that use the water to expand,” she said.

“We also have 120 feet of water snakes that create a sandbagging effect and act as a barrier.”

But they also are asking residents for their help in clearing the storm sewer drains on their streets or near their properties, along with making sure downspouts are free of any ice as well as their sump pumps.

“The ground is still extremely frozen,” Geneva Communications Coordinator Kevin Stahr said. “It doesn’t have anywhere else to go. It will naturally go into the streets. Any help we get from the community will be greatly appreciated.”

The Kane County Office of Emergency Management will be open and monitoring the storm. Director Don Bryant advised residents to call 911 first if they experience flooding.

Bryant said the amount of flooding “will depend on how much rain we get overnight and how much melting occurs.” His office has staged

sandbags in some communities in Kane County, such as Pingree Grove and South Elgin, where flooding typically occurs.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has advised motorists to travel with extreme caution as rain and thawing snow could lead to standing water on low-lying roads.

“The forecasted rain and thawing snow may lead to standing water and possible hazardous driving conditions on roadways throughout the state,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider in a news release. “Motorists are encouraged to use extreme caution when encountering standing water over the next several days.”

The department advised motorists not to drive through flooded areas and that if their car stalls, not to attempt to push it out, but rather seek higher ground.

“Prevention is the key – that is behind smoke-free laws, creating a generation of children that will become adults who do not smoke,” Eagleton said. “They don’t even know what it’s like to go into a restaurant and see people smoke. It’s not the social norm. That goes a long way to prevent people from starting.”

The 2014 acting surgeon general’s report on smoking also addresses the hazards of the habit and of second-hand smoke – from various cancers to heart and lung disease.

“It boldly describes a tobacco end-game,” Eagleton said.

Smoking causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths, 32 percent of coronary artery disease and 79 percent of chronic obstructive pul-

monary disease, Eagleton said. It is linked to diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, fertility problems and age-related macular degeneration.

“We could reduce a third of all cancers if we quit smoking and lived healthier lifestyles,” Eagleton said.

••• This is the sixth year of the Smoke-Free Illinois Act, a comprehensive smokefree law that is one part of a three-pronged effort to reduce smoking, Eagleton said.

The other two parts involve ever-increasing tobacco taxes and the availability of tobacco cessation programs.

“Cost is often the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” Eagleton said. “Science shows the more it costs to buy them, the less likely kids will be able to afford to buy them. Every time the tax

goes up, our Quitline numbers go up. It gets people to try to quit.”

Illinois falls down on how much money it puts into smoking cessation programs, she said.

Illinois spends $11 million when it should be spending $157 million, based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We only fund it at the 7 percent level,” Eagleton said. “We have a long way to go on that front. That is a strong goal of ours moving forward. We do a lot of advocacy work.”

The money for smoking cessation programs comes from the state’s general revenue, and from a 1998 tobacco settlement.

The settlement involved the largest tobacco companies settling lawsuits with 46 state attorneys general on the health costs of smoking.

Still, smoking is a legal activity, though now relegated outside of workplaces and other facilities.

Laura Larson, 51, of Batavia, is a smoker who works at a banquet facility

where smoking is not allowed.

“I smoked for 30 years, but I quit once for two years when I was trying to get pregnant,” Larson said. “Anti-smoking efforts – I’m all for it. It’s helped me cut back immensely. I don’t smoke in my house. And I smoke less than I ever did. One pack will last me four days.”

Larson has tried several times to quit but said nothing worked.

And like Chanzit, Larson grew up at a time when smoking seemed cool – but it also was normal.

“Of the six kids, five smoked,” Larson said. “My dad smoked. All my uncles smoked. My dad quit years ago. The others quit. I’m the only one left smoking.”

Chanzit said he also supports anti-smoking efforts, though six months ago, he said he would have felt marginalized by them.

“We are finally at a place where we can use the language, ‘the dawn of a smoke free America.’ I think we are actually within shooting distance of that,” Chanzit said.

“I remember distinctly how cool it looked,” Chanzit said. “I practiced which way to hold the cigarette that looked the coolest. I blew smoke rings and chains.”

When he decided smoking was not cool, quitting was much harder than he anticipated.

“I truly believe I could have kicked a heroin addiction first,” Chanzit said.

A surgery to fuse bones in his neck required that he not have nicotine in his system.

Chanzit used Chantix for his final, successful attempt to quit smoking and has remained smoke-free since last fall.

“I had no options for failure,” he said. “What changed it for me was the fear element that the surgery would not be successful.”

Chanzit joins the ranks of 49 million former smokers, highlighting the goal of anti-smoking advocates to reduce the number of smokers through prevention, smoking cessation programs and other methods.

The once lofty goal of creating a smoke-free generation for the year 2000 did not quite happen, but anti-smoking advocates say all efforts at curbing smoking are working.

“Prevention is the key,” said Heather Eagleton, Illinois director of government relations for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. “In 1964, there were 80 million smokers. In 2013, there were 43 million smokers. We have come a long way, but that is still 43 million too many.”

In the years following the groundbreaking U.S. Surgeon General’s 1964 report on the hazards of smoking, the percentage of smokers went from 43 percent 50 years ago to 18 percent currently.

What is different, Eagleton said, is that smoking is

Fourth annual Restaurant Week kicks off Monday

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Anyone who will be in town next week should bring an appetite, some money and a postcard coupon for the 2014 St. Charles Restaurant Week.

This year’s event, which begins Monday and continues through Feb. 28, offers discounted dining for 34 restaurants. That is the highest number of restaurants that have participated in the program since it was developed in 2010, said Rita Tungare, St. Charles director of community and economic development.

City officials attribute the increase in participants to a slight uptick in the economy and new restaurants that have opened since last year.

In 2013, a total of 27 businesses participated.

Restaurant Week is typically held in February, which is a slower time for businesses, Tungare said.

“It gives people something to do and it brings people to St. Charles. ... It shows them what we have to offer as a community,” she said.

Patrons can receive a 25 percent discount after they make a minimum $20 dinein purchase and present the coupon in paper or electronic form.

The coupon was sent as a postcard to every address in the city and slightly outside city limits into neighboring communities, Tungare said In response to feedback from restaurants, the promotion is held only on weekdays so the restaurants won’t be overwhelmed on the weekends. Tungare said participating restaurants will receive a survey so owners can give the city feedback on whether the promotion helped their business and if the event needs to be changed.

GENEVA – Eleanore Wermuth Jaeger, 95, of Geneva and formerly of Batavia, died peacefully at her home Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014.

She was born March 4, 1918, in Chicago, to Dr. George and Agnes (Gellner) Wermuth.

Moving to Geneva in 1923, Eleanore graduated from Geneva High School in 1936 and from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Ind., in 1940 with a degree in art. After two years teaching art in Jasper, Ind., she returned to Geneva to teach art in the St. Charles school system.

In 1944, she married John Jaeger, also of Geneva, where they raised their six children. Eleanore continued to teach art in Geneva and at McAuley School in West Chicago. In 1964, the family moved to Batavia where Eleanore was an active member of Holy Cross Parish. She returned to Geneva in 1993 and resumed her membership at St. Peter Parish.

Her love for her family, her many friends and for art enriched everyone around her throughout her long and full life.

Eleanore is survived by five children, Kathleen Jaeger of Geneva, Michael (Margaret) of Pine, Colo., Joseph of Elburn, Timothy (Gail) of Geneva and Betsy (Stephen) Lawson of Morgantown, W. Va.; five grandchildren, Matt (Nicolette) Jaeger and Gerred (Kathleen) Jaeger both of Elburn, Matt Jaeger

of Northbrook, Angela Jaeger of Geneva and Luke Jaeger of Geneva; five great-grandchildren, Kiana McMorris, Olivia, Lillie and Tatum Jaeger and Lauren Jaeger; sister, Joyce Jenkins of Chicago; sisters-in-law Mary Jaeger and Norma Jaeger both of Geneva; brothers-in-law Gene (Florence) Jaeger of Henry and Bill Cantrall of Oak Brook; and many nieces and nephews.

19th annual jazz event to benefit D-303 students KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The Greater St. Charles Education Foundation’s annual jazz fundraiser is set for Saturday night.

Now in its 19th year, the event includes dinner, dancing and performances by the St. Charles East and North jazz bands.

A live auction will include such items as Chicago sports tickets and vacation packages. Silent auction items will include gift baskets and gift certificates.

The event starts at 6 p.m. at the Royal Fox Country Club, 4405 Royal & Ancient Drive, St. Charles.

Proceeds from the event will benefit students in St. Charles School District 303 in the form of scholarships and grants.

Marshall is the owner and principal architect of St. Charles-based Marshall Architects, which annually employs and trains two St. Charles high school students interested in pursing careers in architecture.

Miller is the director of medical toxicology education at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009 as an emergency medicine chief and retired from the U.S. Army in 2012.

GENEVA – Kane County’s director of human resources is on track to getting a 5 percent raise.

The $6,000 proposed salary bump for Sheila McCraven is part of a larger effort by Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen to make director salaries more comparable to those offered by other counties in the region.

“As employers, we need to protect our talent,” Lauzen told the Human Services Committee on Wednesday.

Based on salary information from nearby counties, McCraven’s $121,520 salary is about $7,390 below the average salary paid to her local counterparts, according to a document detailing the proposed raise.

Even after the raise, Lauzen said, “It’s still going to be less than the average among the counties.”

Committee members questioned Lauzen about the source of the funds and expressed concerns about paying an ongoing cost with contingency funds.

“Is the money in the budget?” Lauzen said, repeating what he told another committee that considered a raise on Tuesday. “The answer is yes.”

Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, criticized Lauzen for not providing the details of his request until the meeting and, as she did Tuesday, said the county-to-county compar-

isons aren’t necessarily apple-to-apple comparisons.

Jesse Vazquez, D-Aurora, asked that Lauzen provide additional details to the county comparison chart, such as county population, number of employees and responsibilities.

The committee forwarded the proposed raise to the Finance/Budget Committee, which also will consider the raises proposed for other directors.

Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, noted that the committee is forwarding the proposal with the understanding that board members are waiting for the full details.

In other news, the committee briefly discussed a draft of the employee concealed carry policy. Under the proposal, county employees may not carry a concealed firearm in any county building or vehicle.

They also would be prohibited from carrying such weapon in their private vehicle while in the course of their employment with the county.

The committee moved the proposed policy to next month because nobody from the State’s Attorney’s Office was available to answer questions.

Members requested that the “no guns allowed” stickers be displayed on county buildings as soon as possible.

“If it’s not on the window, someone’s going to think it’s OK,” committee chair Cristina Castro said.

Hickory Knolls to present ‘Echoes of Their Wings’ ST. CHARLES – Two programs in the St. Charles Park District’s “Learn from the Experts” series will concentrate on both a common and a longgone animal. Malcolm X was more than King’s alter ego

By PENIEL E. JOSEPH The Root This Friday marks the 49th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, and the 20th-century icon is still making headlines.

His memory remains contested and debated, as witnessed by the recent controversies over his depiction in rapper Nicki Minaj’s cover art and a Queens, N.Y., public school teacher forbidding students to write about him during Black History Month out of ignorance over his true political and historical legacy, describing Malcolm as too “violent.”

Malcolm X, though, stood astride the world stage alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, and should be remembered as a working-class hero.

In the public’s imagination, Malcolm, with his unapologetic and eloquent advocacy of self-defense and black power, was seen as offering a counterpoint to King’s philosophical emphasis on nonviolence. He spent much of 1963 offering an alternative perspec-

tive on the efficacy of civil rights struggles, and in November of that year Malcolm delivered “Message to the Grassroots,” one of his most famous and important speeches.

Malcolm died, in the end, how he lived – working, teaching and inspiring ordinary black people.

But Malcolm X was more than just a prophet of black rage who galvanized African-Americans to reject the political and racial status quo of the 1960s.

He was, in fact, an organizer, intellectual and activist whose personal biography mirrored the black community’s pain, tragedy and triumphs.

Most importantly, he dared to speak truth to power by offering a revolutionary vision of a new American and global society and, through his own activism, attempted to turn this dream into reality.

Health-related ad sure to raise blood pressure Most driving occasions, I barely pay attention to the radio. Sure, some instances, my steering wheel and dashboard become an impromptu drum set, and I transform into the best percussionist in five states; however, I tend to keep my fantastic musical abilities hidden and my mind on the road.

One day, between some of my jam sessions, my ears did pick up a rather grating advertisement.

The ad describes a zealous sports fan engaged in his “big game,” and his wife talking with a friend of hers.

While she’s busy cleaning and talking with her friend, her husband interjects with cries for nachos and

other foods. They continue talking, and her friend mentions a clinic that caters especially to cardiac health in case the husband needs it.

Ya know, because that plump sports blob just loves his nachos way too much.

I’ve got a few minor issues with this particular ad.

True, there are some diehard sports fans out there, but I think depicting one as a useless glutton in an intimate relationship with his television seems almost demeaning to men. Moreover, the ad makes him sound like a fully-grown half man/half child incapable of preparing his own food or controlling his personal well-being.

I gather that the commer-

In my opinion, the ad employed very negative stereotypes. A man shouldn’t treat his wife like a chow production line at his every beck and call. Furthermore, a woman shouldn’t put up with her lazy husband and should maybe show him to a treadmill or two.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I do believe that it’s currently 2014. An ad like this should have no place in a modern country trying to reach some acceptable level of social equality.

Every form of media conveys some sort of message – informational, political, humorous, etc. With the power to reach so many people, one would think that the message would consist of something a bit more meaningful and positive than eat yourself into a food coma and then use this facility to fix it.

Dawn’s Beach Hut provides tropical atmosphere during winter’s grip

f you’re looking to escape this endless winter weather for an evening, Dawn’s Beach Hut, 8 N. 3rd St. in downtown St. Charles, might provide the perfect refuge.

“If you don’t look out the windows, everybody swears they are in a Florida Keys beach bar,” said owner Dawn Humer.

Humer has tried hard to convey a tropical atmosphere, from the thatch-roofed hut above the bar to the tropical drinks and the music that flows through the intimate establishment.

“I only play Jimmy Buffet, reggae and Caribbean music,” Humer said. “When I go out, I like an escape, and that’s what I feel my place is. I’m providing a total experience.”

In October, Dawn’s Beach Hut celebrated five years of being in business. It opened during St. Charles’ annual Scarecrow Festival in October 2008.

Humer is proud her business still is going strong, especially in the face of tough economic times.

“The economy has been tough for me, like everyone else,” Humer said. “And finding my location is tough because I am not on Route 64.

My success is dependent on word of mouth.”

Humer has perfected the tropical bar theme. Dawn’s Beach Hut is Humer’s fifth bar and her third featuring a tropical theme. She previously owned two tropical-themed bars in Schaumburg.

“I have the feel for the tropical theme,” she said. “It’s

Dawn’s Beach Hut is known for its tropical drinks.

“It’s all about the drinks,” Humer said. “Probably 80 percent of our sales are in specialty tropical drinks, such as Funky Monkey, Caribbean Margarita or the Lava Flow, which is the No. 1 seller.”

The establishment also sells mixed drinks and domestic, craft and international brews.

Along with providing customers with a taste of the tropics, Dawn’s Beach Hut has a warm and cozy atmosphere.

The establishment has a capacity of about 40 people.

And because Humer wants her customers to be able to carry on conversations with each other, the music in Dawn’s Beach Hut is not blaring.

“People can actually speak to each other,” Humer said.

She hopes Dawn’s Beach Hut provides a place for people to get away, even if it is just for an evening.

“This is a break from our routines,” Humer said. “Life can be so busy.”

During the winter, Dawn’s Beach Hut is open from 7 p.m. to midnight on Thursdays and from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Altitude creates distinct characteristics in wine G

raham Weerts was very clear; this was not a contest.

Six wines sat in glasses ready to be sampled at Altitude Matters, a blind tasting and presentation on mountain-grown fruit at Domaine Wine Storage in Chicago on Jan. 30.

Weerts, the Stonestreet winemaker, told the small gathering of restaurant, media and wine industry representatives that would discuss Sonoma and European wines grown at an altitude that he wanted an examination to take place that featured open dialogue.

What ensued was a presentation on the perils of high-altitude farming, the rugged terrain, physiological adaptations of the vines and a clear-cut argument that altitude and mountainous terroir create distinct characteristics.

Even on wines made on separate continents.

Winemaker spotlight Rugged terrain and steep slopes make tractor usage impossible at high altitudes. The Stonestreet vineyards in Healdsburg, Calif., stretch between 700 and 2,400 feet.

It’s a labor-intensive process.

But the results presented at Altitude Matters prove the challenge to be worthwhile.

“There’s some key elements of altitude,” said Gilian Handelman, director of wine education at Jackson Family Wines. “We like the word different, rather than better. There’s a different acidity, minerality, texture and structure at altitude. When you can taste through that lens, aromas are important, but, structurally, that’s where the key is for these wines.”

Because it’s closer to the sun, the fruit grown at altitude has to have a thicker skin.

Being on a mountain provides greater access to water and thus more depleted soil. Even the inversion layer of fog has a different effect.

“The higher you go, the cooler it traditionally is,” Weerts said. “But in the summer a huge fog bank and costal influence displace all the warm air and cold air sinks. It happens every single day during the growing season. It changes things in a big way. The higher we go, the warmer it is at night and cooler during the day. It’s a flip-flop kind of thing but at higher altitudes it helps us get a different kind of wine.

“If you were to go ski without sunscreen on, you’d get burned up. Wines from high altitude are similar. The fruit has skins that are dramatically different than those on the valley floor. The vines on a very steep slope have adapted to the sun’s exposure.”

The Alexander Mountain is a giant water catcher. So much so that Stonestreet receives 40 percent more water than neighboring estates on the valley floor. The vines are stressed in different ways, which creates elegant, structured wines with a plethora of unique flavors.

Wine 101 The presentation and ensuing discussion at Altitude Matters was the most informative, yet laid back, wine event I’ve attended this year. An incredibly talented group shared opinions for two hours as the snow vigorously fell outside.

Weerts challenged everyone to answer his most pressing question: Is there something significantly different about the makeup and structure of these wines? There’s a lot of debate about that right now.

For a long time I’ve held the belief that mountain fruit produces expressive wines.

Altitude Matters provided a physiological examination that furthered the story of mountain fruit.

Here’s a glance at Kane County Chronicle-area qualifiers for the IHSA state wrestling tournament, to be held today through Saturday at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign:

RANKLIN PARK – Leave it to Jake Mende’s parents to do what several high school wrestlers couldn’t Saturday – catch the St. Charles East senior 145-pounder in a sheepish moment.

Shortly removed from descending the podium with a third-place sectional finish and a berth in this weekend’s Class 3A state tournament in Champaign, Mende eventually agreed to a few pictures with his folks.

Kevin and Charlene Mende must have been as surprised as anyone watching at Leyden that day.

Rarely, if ever, does their son hesitate in the vicinity of a mat.

“Because of wrestling, I feel like I’ve been able to come out and be more confident,” Jake Mende said.

“There’s life values I’ll take away from wrestling that will help me the rest of my life.”

That’s a pretty lofty statement, to be sure, but it certainly doesn’t mean Mende is discounting his upcoming matches at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center.

If anything, the wrestling virtue at his greatest command has fueled Mende throughout a 33-8 season that now includes his first career state berth.

“I mean, Jake’s a workhorse,” junior 152-pounder Keone Derain said. “He’s got a good mentality and he’s always determined. I like that about him. He’s a good partner.”

Mende often spars with Derain and senior 138-pounder Isaiah Vela – like Derain, a repeat state qualifier – in the Saints’ mat room.

Mende enters the IHSA Class 3A state meet today with a 33-8 record after finishing with a 14-7 record and falling a victory short of advancing to state last year. not always as a varsity teammate. A four-year wrestler, Mende defeated former Saint Nick Giovenco in a wrestle-off during his junior season to take control of the Saints’ spot at 138.

He lost a 4-2 decision to Glenbard East’s Josh Martin in a consolation semifinal at sectionals last year, finishing 14-7 and falling one victory short of state.

“That was probably some of the motivation that had me come back this year,” Mende said.

Mende encountered

Martin once more at Leyden, this time in a semifinal. The result was the same, as a 10-6 loss sent Mende to the backdraw, but it hardly sapped his spirit.

A late takedown in his consolation semifinal against Conant’s Gus Karapanos secured a 4-3 victory and assured the top-four finish that punched Mende’s ticket to state. In addition to his own personal goals, Mende said he adopted the plight of Geneva junior Mike Huck during the Karapanos bout.

Karapanos earned a

third-period fall against Huck one round earlier to end Huck’s season, the narrative for which could not exclude a mention of Mende. Mende earned close victories against Huck at the Saints-Vikings dual, in the Upstate Eight Conference tournament and again at regionals.

“After he lost that match, I was kind of wrestling for him,” Mende said.

Mende began wrestling in elementary school, keeping up with the times in an athletic family. His older

sister, Heather, is a sprinter at Valparaiso, while younger sister Lauren is a Saints sophomore cheerleader.

“TWO!” – the number of points awarded for a takedown – is by far the most popular outburst from wrestling fans in Champaign.

Mende yearns to hear it early and often this weekend.

“He’s turned it on,” Saints coach Jason Potter said.

“He’s worked his butt off to get to this point.”

Whether his season ends on a podium or elsewhere, Mende wants that last part to resonate. Pictures or not, it’s part of his enduring image.

LOMBARD – What was a close game got away from the St. Charles North girls basketball team down the stretch Wednesday night in an IHSA Class 4A Glenbard East Regional semifinal.

Bartlett scored 20 points in the final six minutes to pull away for a 60-38 victory.

Senior Nichole Davidson scored in the lane with 4:35 to play and the North Stars (1413) trailed 43-36. But perhaps the key play of the night came with 3:25 left when 6-foot1 sophomore Kelly Harris scored inside for the Hawks (17-11) and was fouled. She converted the ensuing free throw to make it a 10-point game.

“It just got away from us at the end,” North coach Sean Masoncup said. “Getting down 7-1 in fouls and them being in the bonus the whole second half is tough to come back from.”

The North Stars struggled early against Bartlett’s 2-3 matchup zone, with everyone but Davidson finding it difficult to score. She scored North’s first nine points, with her 3-pointer from the left wing midway through the first quarter cutting Bartlett’s lead to 10-9.

The Knights awakened those not-too-distant echoes Wednesday night, frustrating host Plano in a 43-27 IHSA Class 3A regional semifinal victory.

It was Kaneland’s interior defense taking the lead as senior Kelly Wallner – giving up about four inches – forced 6-foot-3 Plano standout Clarisa Martinez into a nightmare outing.

Wallner loved the win, and the manner in which Kaneland earned a berth in Friday’s regional final against Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Sycamore.

“Oh, definitely pride. That’s what Kaneland is based off of, is defense,” Wallner said. “We know that we had to come out

The unquestioned focal point for the Reapers at both ends of the floor, Martinez fouled out with 3:21 to play in the fourth quarter with eight points, 16 rebounds and two blocked shots. Her shooting line, however, told the tale – she was 3 for 16 shooting from the floor.

“She was getting angry, and that’s when you’ve got to really push it on her and really take it to her,” said Wallner, who also contributed team highs of 13 points and nine rebounds.

Martinez has more than 1,000 points to her credit in her Plano career. While Wallner forced Martinez into most of her difficult shots, sophomore Bailey Crimmins also contributed to Martinez’s rough night while adding six points off the bench.

“We thought if we just kind of walled up on her and made her shoot with some 6-footers with hands in her face, that’s not easy to shoot and make those shots,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said.

Third-seeded Kaneland (1414) lost to second-seeded Plano during the regular season, but Colombe sensed the Knights could turn that close result around with even a decent shooting night. The Knights shooting improved, but it was their swarming defense that dictated play, as none of Martinez’s teammates were able to pick up the scoring slack.

The game started ominously for Kaneland as the Knights were assessed a pregame technical foul for running out onto both sides of the floor during warmups. Despite the Reapers cashing in two made free throws before the clock started, the game quickly swung in the Knights’ favor.

Martinez picked up her second foul midway through the first quarter, allowing the Knights’ offense to generate points in the paint to complement the outside shooting of Caroline Heimerdinger, who drained a trio of 3-pointers in the opening half. Kaneland led at halftime, 24-16.

“Another senior stepping up,” Colombe said of Heimerdinger. “She can hit those shots and we’re counting on her to his those shots.

That’s what we keep talking about, if you want to be a big player, you’ve got to step up and make the plays when it counts, and I thought our seniors did a good job tonight.”

“We got some good looks and knocked them down. I thought we were pretty close to making a good run,” Featherly said. “And then they got a layup from Pryor, a steal, and that took a little steam out of our sails.”

Alison Colby scored 10 points for the Rockets. Teammates Shelby Holt and Samantha Cruz both chipped in eight.

Emma Benoit also scored 10 points. Becky Dumoulin scored eight points for the Whip-Purs.

In the nightcap, St. Edward (19-8) scored the first 11 points and cruised from there. Rosary (11-16) rallied to close the gap to six at the end of the first quarter, 16-10, but that was the closest the Royals would get. The Green Wave held a 2716 advantage at halftime and widened their lead to 46-20 at the end of the third quarter.

St. Edward’s Madelyn Spagnola led all scorers with 25 points. Cecile Rapp scored 13 points for the Green Wave and teammate Clarissa Ramos notched 10.

Rosary senior Rachel Choice scored 15 points. Emily Bakala chipped in six points and Taylor Drozdowksi added five to the Rosary effort.

AURORA – The Burlington Central girls basketball team overwhelmed Hampshire, 59-35, in the first IHSA Class 3A Aurora Central Catholic Class Girls Basketball Regional semifinal game Wednesday night.

The Rockets will face St. Edward for the regional crown Saturday.

The Green Wave won the second semifinal contest over Rosary in another lopsided contest, 60-36.

“I was very pleased. We haven’t seen Hampshire in a while and they played great team basketball last night,” Central coach Mark Smith said. “We knew we were going to get a great effort from them.”

“We gave it our best effort in terms of attitude. Just too many turnovers,” said Mike Featherly, Hampshire’s coach. “With a team like that you just have to take care of the basketball.”

Hampshire (12-15) held a brief lead early in the game, going up 9-8 on a layup by Peyton DeChant (10 points) with 3 minutes left in the first quarter.

The Rockets (23-5) responded with an 11-3 run to end the quarter with a 19-11 lead.

Central continued to dominate in the second quarter, outscoring the Whip-Purs, 15-7, to hold a 34-18 lead at the half.

The Rockets’ defense forced 10 Hampshire turnovers in the first half. Samantha Pryor was the main benefactor, scoring 20 of her game-high 23 points in the first 16 minutes.

“I thought for a majority of the game, the press made them get out of their offense, which did us a lot of favors,” Smith said. “We got a lot of turnovers out of it.”

CHICAGO – A video segment titled “Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down” appeared on the United Center scoreboard during halftime of a recent Bulls game.

In the video, Bulls players served as the voters, although they made their decisions by using oversized foam thumbs instead of paper ballots.

The topic: TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager’s colorful wardrobe.

“I think it’s dope,” forward Taj Gibson said with a giant thumbs up.

“Too flashy for me,” guard Kirk Hinrich said with a quick thumbs down.

“I like it,” guard Jimmy Butler said, thumb flipping up. “It’s different. I like different.”

So does Sager. He has strived to be different ever since he was a kid growing up in Batavia in the 1960s, which then was a quiet farm town instead of a busy suburb.

What was life like as a kid in Batavia?

It’s totally different now than it was when we grew up. It was such a small area and you were so far out. Now, it’s one big suburb all the way through.

But we were kind of isolated in the middle of a cornfield out there. Our big thing was basketball. [Basketball Hall of Famer] Dan Issel was a senior, [Cincinnati Bengals quarterback] Kenny Anderson was a junior, I was a freshman.

Back then, you didn’t have classifications. So for us to go downstate, we’d have to beat Proviso East and all of these bigger schools. If we had classi-

fications back then, I seriously think we would have won several state championships.

Because we won 58 conference games in a row. We dominated.

When did the light go on that you could be a broadcaster?

I always wanted to do that.

I always said I wanted to go to Northwestern, I wanted to play for the basketball team and I wanted to be a cheerleader for the football team because I loved to do all of those flips and all that stuff. …

I ended up walking on at Northwestern. I was involved in all of the sports. I just felt that was the one area that I wanted to do – I wanted to be an announcer. So I had that plan basically since when I was in junior high.

The first thing people notice is your suits. Where did that start?

Well, in Batavia, they told us for our high school picture for the yearbook when we were seniors (in 1969), you had to wear a black or navy blazer.

And I thought that was kind of

boring. And I was a big fan of The Monkees.

I had this Nehru jacket that was electric blue, and it had a white collar. And I can just see me right now – like, ‘Hey, hey, we’re The Monkees!’ – so I wore that. And they said, ‘Sorry, Sager, we took your picture, but you’ve got to reschedule.

We’re not going to put that in the yearbook.’ And I was like, ‘Hey, come on, why not?’ And they said, ‘No. We told you.’

But the school was so small, and I was president of the National Honor Society and I was in all the sports and I was in the plays and everything else. So they kind of had to have my picture in the yearbook. (laughs) So they put it in there.

Now, at the reunion, when we go back (and look at the pictures), everybody looks the same. And all of a sudden I look like I’m going to the priesthood.

I’ve got this Nehru jacket and the big collar and the white collar.

It didn’t extend like that

always, but I was in radio and then I wanted to get a job in TV in Sarasota (Fla.), and I didn’t have a jacket. So I went to like a Goodwill thrift shop and I found this yellow, blue and white Seersucker suit. It was gorgeous. So I bought that and I wore that to my interview in Tampa as the weatherman at Channel 10.

I remember I was Golden Guide and I did all that. So I knew my meteorology, and I got the job. But they said, ‘Listen, you can’t wear that on TV.’ I go, ‘Why?’ They said, ‘Because our cameras don’t focus.’ It was just kind of a blur.

Obviously, now our technology is better and I can wear brighter colors and wear different things. I’ve always had that urge. Growing up in Batavia, with the cornfield, I just wanted to be bright and lively.

The group spent two weeks in the area around the city of Granada, Nicaragua, and helped construct a church building that can double as a community center and school.

They also delivered MannaPack food packets provided by the Feed My Starving Children organization.

Baltes’ efforts to enhance the spiritual lives of others extends to her fellow students at Illinois Wesleyan.

“On campus, we started a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group,” she said. “There had been [one] in the past. It kind of disbanded. A teammate [Katie Seibring] and I got it going again.”

All of the effort Baltes has expended on these good works has done nothing to detract from her effort on the court.

The 5-foot-9 guard is averaging 13.9 points and 5.3 rebounds a game for the Titans (16-7). She leads the team in assists (98) and steals (67). In a victory over Howard Payne in December she recorded the first triple-double in school history with 14 points, 16 rebounds, and a school-record 13 assists.

Illinois Wesleyan’s 69-57 victory over the Lady Reds in Bloomington was the first loss of the season for Carthage in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. The Titans (10-2) are one game behind in the CCIW standings.

“We’re looking to win out the rest of conference and get in the conference tournament and see what we can do from there,” Baltes said.

Lexi Baltes is sure to receive plenty of honors for her contributions on the basketball court for Illinois Wesleyan this season, but it will be hard to top the honors she’s received in the past two weeks for what she did off the court.

Baltes, a senior from St. Charles, was named an Academic All-American on Tuesday. Last week, she was one of 10 collegians named to the Allstate Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Good Works Teams, which recognizes players who have made a commitment to improving the lives of others.

The St. Charles East product was selected to the third team of the Capital One Academic All-America Division III women’s basketball squad by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

“I was excited and honored to get that award,” Baltes said. “I came here for both academics and athletics, so to be able to get that is pretty exciting.”

A minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale is required to be considered for Academic All-American status. Baltes has a 3.89 GPA while working toward a double major in English and political science.

Besides playing basketball and concentrating on her studies, Baltes finds time to be involved with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Illinois Wesleyan, the Pi Sigma Alpha sorority, and the Death, Resurrection, Life campus ministry.

“Time management is key and maybe giving up sleep a little bit,” Baltes said. “Really, I think it’s a great support system here at Wesleyan.”

She said coaches are concerned about the academic success of their players and, conversely, professors come to the games to support the athletes. She said the school fosters an “environment where excellence in different areas is possible.”

Connie, in “Former Marine,” likes being a father to his three sons and he has done everything he could to give them what they needed including their educations, down payments on their houses, even a Hawaiian honeymoon. He mortgaged his trailer and land, which became a problem when he lost his job. At 70, he barely scrapes by and his sons, whose work and lives have distanced them from Connie, don’t seem to notice the extent of his struggles.

Connie, once a Marine, has seen his sons all take careers in law enforcement. Like him, they live by a code that ultimately sets them apart from their father. Though there’s an inevitability to the arc of this story, there is more importantly a quiet, earnest grace reminiscent of “The Sweet Hereafter.”

With the death of the dog comes the unraveling of the family unit.

Those of us reading this may feel a need to repress a smile at the oddly amusing way he reveals his plight.

Sheila cheats on Harold, a hard-working excavator, and then leaves him to marry the contractor who’d been her lover.

She gets both the beautiful house of her dreams and an adopted baby in

the exchange. There is no biblical reckoning for Sheila. She sees something better suited for her; she takes it; and she prospers.

village of 1,000 year-round residents. It’s a given that they will run into each other. “The Christmas Party” shows us that no long and intimate relationship is easily untangled. Harold, despite his fervent wish for decorum, has greater needs. Sheila’s new house, we are told, is a repudiation of the past; a retelling of her story, which is now about finding true love.

That’s a lot for Harold to bear.

Most of these stories gently wrench the people involved away from regular lives and families and drop them in a place where they must refocus, bear up and work even harder than they have, most often more alone than before. “Blue” is more horrific and more harshly fated. Despite its slow and easy way of unfolding, we are keyed for trouble (and we are miserable waiting for it) when a group of car salesmen and women decide on a strategy for taking advantage of an African-American woman shopping, at long last, for a car she has saved long and hard for. Ventana goes about the transaction as she has gone about her life, cautiously and systematically.

But she has a weakness we all recognize.

She makes an attempt at befriending something not necessarily trustworthy.

She sees something in Blue that simply isn’t there.

There isn’t a story in this book that won’t instantly hook you, not with an adrenaline rush, a clever plot twist or high drama, but by an insistent tug at the heart and at our false sense of fairness as we watch, helplessly, at the insistence of the unravelings.

Irritable bowel syndrome may have many causes Dear Doctor K: I have irritable bowel syndrome. Can you explain what has caused it?

Dear Reader: The honest answer is we don’t know what causes irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Over the past 20 years, we’ve discovered some clues and developed some new treatments.

IBS is a common condition.

Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, bloating, gassiness and cramping. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve posted criteria that doctors look for when diagnosing IBS.) No physical abnormality has been yet identified in people with IBS. For example, the walls of the large and small intestine appear normal. However, researchers have reported some abnormalities in how the intestines function.

Normally, the intestines move digested food progressively downward to the rectum, where a bowel movement removes it from the body. For that to happen, the walls of the intestine must squeeze down in a coordinated way. In many (but not all) patients with IBS, the movement of the intestinal walls is not well-coordinated.

Whether these abnormalities in how the intestines work explain the symptoms of IBS, however, remains uncertain. In fact, it’s likely that IBS is not a single disease, but

Some possible causes of IBS symptoms include: • Infection. A bout of infectious gastroenteritis (stomach or bowel inflammation) may sensitize the gut in a way that leads to IBS symptoms.

• Overgrowth of intestinal bacteria in the small intestine.

This may contribute to common symptoms in some patients, and antibiotic treatment may improve some symptoms.

• Unusual bacteria in the large intestine. In all of us, the large intestine is filled with trillions of bacteria, of thousands of different types. Some experts speculate that IBS may be influenced by the types of bacteria in the large intestine.

• Colon activity. Some research has found that muscle in the wall of the large intestine (colon) can become more sensitive than usual; it goes into spasm after only mild stimulation.

• Heightened sensitivity.

Another possibility is that people with IBS have a much lower threshold for pain than people without IBS.

• Hormones produced in the GI tract, which affect movement of the bowels, may also trigger symptoms. Women with IBS often have more symptoms during their menstrual periods. This suggests that levels of reproductive hormones also affect IBS symptoms.

• Dietary factors. Certain foods can trigger IBS symptoms.

Common culprits include cabbage, broccoli, legumes and other gas-producing foods, caffeine, alcohol, dairy products, fatty foods, raw fruits, and foods, gums and beverages containing sorbitol, an artificial sweetener. These foods contain substances called FODMAPs. It’s a matter of trial and error to determine which foods trigger your symptoms. Eliminate one food at a time to see which ones give you trouble.

• Stress and emotion. Stress stimulates colon spasms in people with IBS. Stress reduction, relaxation training and counseling can help relieve symptoms in some people.

I’ll bet that, like many illnesses, IBS has multiple physical causes and can be made worse by stress.

Dr. Wallace: Over the Christmas break, my family and I went to London to visit my grandparents. My mother was born in England, and my parents met when they both were students at Surrey University.

Dear Abby: I’m a single mom in a serious relationship with a divorced man who has children of his own. Between us, we have seven, ranging in age from 7 to 17. I’m in my early 30s; he’s in his early 50s.

My dilemma is that I’m interested in having another child if we get married. He definitely isn’t.

Is it unreasonable for me to want to add to this already large potential blended family? At the bridge table, the beauty of a deal can increase upon careful analysis. Sometimes, though, the key play is a falsecard.

What should happen in this deal after West leads the heart ace against three no-trump?

Before getting to the answer, some pairs use interesting honor leads against no-trump. They choose one card, either the ace or king (I prefer the king), when they have a very strong suit. It asks partner either to unblock an honor or to give count. With that agreement, West would lead his “big” card here, happy if East could throw the queen onto the table. (Assuming the king is “big,” then an ace-lead is from a weaker ace-king holding, asking partner to signal attitude. And a queen-lead is from either a weak king-queen or a good queen-jack.)

If that appeals to you, discuss it carefully with your partners.

Using standard leads and signals, East should play his heart three at trick one, discouraging. Then South must drop his seven. He has to try to persuade West that East started with Q-3-2 of hearts and was doing the best he could by playing the three. Agreed, it should not work. West’s ace-lead should not be from a holding weaker than ace-king-jack-fourth. And if that is true, East can afford to play his queen from Q-3-2.

West should shift at trick two, and whichever suit he chooses, East will get in with his club ace and can lead his second heart through South’s queen to defeat the contract by two tricks.
