BATAVIA – Mooseheart students David Kudel and Ethan Davis, both 11, watched, fascinated, as Kari Kraus poured whole milk into a pan and began putting drops of various food colorings into it.

Kraus then dripped some watercolor paints to the food coloring mix and added the “secret” ingredient – Palmolive dish soap.

“We’re going to take a few drops, and what we’re doing is, we’re disrupting the surface tension,” Kraus said as the dish soap seemed to cause the colors to swirl. “So, the fats are going to tumble around On the Web in there and almost make the colors dance … kind of move around. And now we’re going to make a mono print – a one-of-a-kind piece of art.”

Volunteers Cody Oleszczuk and Chelsey Fulbright from Pushing the Envelope Farm in Geneva demonstrated how to make balm from beeswax, coconut oil with a blend of olive, canola and grape seed oil, and water.

First, they heated everything up on hot plates, then poured it into a blender.

“We do an emulsion process to make it into a cream,” Fulbright said.

“Beeswax acts a natural emulsifier and lets the oil and water mix togeth-

er,” Oleszczuk added.

Children decorated the lids to small jars and picked scents to add from essential oils, such as lavender or mint.

Batavia resident Julie Adams came to the event with her 10-year-old twins, Ryan and Hailey.

“We love the Batavia Public Library, and my kids love art and science,” Julie Adams said. “We’ll see it all.”

Andrew Deitchman, a library board member who came to the event with his sons, Adam, 10, and Logan, 6, said it was a great opportunity for kids.

“The kids love hands-on activities, and we love going to the local science museums. And this a chance where it’s all brought here,” Deitchman said.

Pritchard-sponsored bill targeting college funding, MAP grants

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When the downtown St. Charles fitness studio that Kimber McCue and Liz Peterson went to unexpectedly closed last year, they seized the moment to open a studio of their own.

The St. Charles School District 303 elementary school teachers – Peterson teaches fourth grade at Anderson, and McCue teaches kindergarten at Munhall – acted quickly. They knew the previous studio’s clients had workout routines, and they didn’t want to lose potential business, they said.

“We had a week,” McCue said of making the space theirs.

Peak Fitness Studio opened Nov. 1 at 9 N. Second St. and offers such classes as barre, sculpt, cardio and yoga, they said, adding they soon will start offering kids yoga.

To McCue and Peterson, Peak – which has the tagline of “Move • Tone

• Build” – is more than an exercise studio. It’s a place where people don’t have to worry about the outside world for an hour, they said.

“This is their place to come,” McCue said.

Child care is available for parents during their workouts, they said. Peak has a kids room equipped with toys and places for babies, such as a pack and play.

“Kids are welcome here,” Peterson said.

She and McCue both are mothers of three and have spent all or most of their lives in St. Charles.

“We’re very grounded here,” McCue said, explaining why they wanted to open a fitness studio downtown.

Although they both still teach, they said their schedules allow them to be at Peak.

“We spend our extra time right here,” Peterson said.

DeKALB – State Rep. Bob Pritchard has said he opposes piecemeal appropriations to pay the state’s bills, but he’s a chief sponsor on legislation filed in Springfield this week that would be a fix for getting money only to the state’s colleges and universities and some students.

Pritchard, R-Hinckley, signed on to be a main supporter of House Bill 4539, which is a $1.68 billion appropriations package Bob “aimed at creating a Pritchard path towards funding all of higher education in light of the budget stalemate in Springfield,” according to a written statement his office released about the legislation.

The bill gives no funding to cashstarved social services, despite several of them threatening to close.

He told Shaw Media that the legislation is meant to be a Republican “salvo,” aimed at getting Democrats to negotiate funding issues further.

It was filed Wednesday, the same day Democrats’ Senate Bill 2043 finally passed to fund the Monetary Awards Program and community colleges.

But that legislation is expected to be vetoed.

“Citizens need to understand the gridlock we’re in and where pressure needs to be put to break the gridlock,” Pritchard said. He said House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, needs a prod to get him to negotiate with Republicans.

Under the Republican bill, in or-

der for students to get MAP (Monetary Award Program) money and colleges and universities to get state aid, another piece of legislation has to be approved. It calls for giving the governor the ability to move money around and adopt emergency rules for state agencies in case of a shortfall.

The latter proposal could be dead on arrival for Democrats, Pritchard acknowledged.

“They all look to leader Madigan about giving the governor authority, and they say, ‘Oh, no, we can’t do that.’ Well, we realize that,” he said.

“Our leader has met with Madigan, and Madigan has summarily dismissed this whole idea of giving the governor authority to move money, and funding our universities.”

Northern Illinois University stands to get $73 million in state aid from the Republicans’ bill. The money would be $18 million less than what the school received in fiscal 2015 (July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015) and about $10 million more than what it expected to receive this fiscal year.

Democrats had appropriated $85 million to NIU in the budget bill they approved in May, which Rauner vetoed a month later.

Steve Brown, a spokesman for Madigan, said the bill that passed last week was an “attempt to reverse the governor’s mistaken veto of MAP and community college funding.”

Schools such as NIU and Kishwaukee College, as well as students who depend on MAP grants, still could be in limbo, with the Democrats’ bill expected to be vetoed and the Republicans’ likely to be a nonstarter.

ST. CHARLES – The United Way of Central Kane County – which serves such communities as St. Charles, Geneva and Elburn – will merge into another chapter serving southern Kane County and Kendall County, according

to a news release.

The merger into Fox Valley United Way will be effective Aug. 1, the release states.

Two issues are prompting the merger – the pending retirements of Central Kane County’s executive director, Paula Yensen, and administrative assistant, Julie Slavens, and “extensive

new business practices” required of all United Way organizations by United Way Worldwide, according to the release.

In the release, Yensen stated the new business model stresses the need for local United Ways to spearhead collaborative community change, but the organizational capacities required

“make it difficult for smaller United Ways such as ours to remain viable.”

An “extensive” cost-benefit analysis showed that merging with Fox Valley United Way was the best option, the release states. It noted that Fox Valley United Way is on pace to

‘OUTSTANDING VALUES OF OUR FAITH’ Catholic Schools Week being observed in Kane County

bschory@shawmedia.com Patrick Donahoe attended Catholic schools from kindergarten through high school, and he wanted the same for his four sons.

The North Aurora resident’s sons – ages 4 through 14 – started out being home-schooled, but this year they are all at Holy Cross Catholic School in Batavia: Patrick in eighth grade, William in sixth grade, Sean in third grade and Finnian in preschool.

“The academic environment – to me – has been fantastic,” Donahoe said. “It has pushed my children to be better.”

His son, Patrick, and another boy, Justin Suess of Batavia, both earned academic scholarships to attend Marmion Academy, a Catholic-Benedictine college preparatory high school in Aurora – just further proof of the school’s commitment to academic excellence, Holy Cross Principal Mike Puttin said.

“It’s significant,” Puttin said. “More than anything else, it shows the preparation we give our students – whether it be from writing to math skills.”

Holy Cross and other Catholic schools – such as St. Peter in Geneva and St. Patrick in St. Charles – will mark National Catholic Schools Week this week through Saturday with the theme, “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

Puttin said the observance highlights the schools’ commitment to faith, academics and service.

“More than anything else, Catholic Schools Week raises the awareness of how significant the parochial school system really is,” Puttin said.

“We have a great community of faith here, of service and strong academics,” Puttin added. “Kids are taught the outstanding values of our faith. We are also commingling that with strong academies and a commitment to service to help others less fortunate.”

Holy Cross School will celebrate with a variety of events and activities, such as service trips to Feed My Starving Children, collecting food for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, an All School Read event and raising money for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Holy Cross offers several after-school clubs, including a math club that recently placed second out of 22 schools in a recent competition, Puttin said.

Holy Cross also began a Spanish enrichment after-school program, with the intention of bringing Spanish into the curriculum, Puttin said.

When Holy Cross opened its school in 2008, it was the first new Catholic school in the Rockford Diocese in more than 30 years, officials said. It now has 417 students, and next year, it will begin two classes at each grade level, Puttin said.

Proposed alcohol and drug treatment center would impact ambulance calls

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If a proposed alcohol and drug treatment center is permitted at a former boys’ school, the ambulance calls to a local fire district would increase by 120 to 150 a year, according to testimony Monday.

Maxxam Partners LLC is seeking a special-use permit from the Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals to convert the former Glenwood School for Boys, at 41W400 Silver Glen Road, into a 120-bed private pay, luxury treatment center.

At the continued hearing, Robert Handley, board president of the Fox River and Countryside Fire Protection District, said he based his estimate by comparing similar facilities in other areas.

“We are out-of-quarters for at least three hours from the time of dispatch to time of arrival” at the hospital, Handley said. “We can’t just drop them [patients] off and say, ‘Goodbye.’ There is a transfer of patient care.”

In 2015, the fire district had 896 calls for emergency medical service and 489

calls for fire service, officials said.

Handley said one ambulance down for three hours would strain the district’s ability to serve other residents.

Handley said the district would have to rely on other departments, which would charge out-of-district fees, Handley said.

“And presumably the response time would be increased.” Handley said. “They would have to wait for an ambulance. It has a ripple effect.”

Handley testified that additional calls also cause wear and tear on the ambulances.

Maxxam attorney Keith Brown said a recipient of emergency services could get a bill for as much as $2,730, based on fees.

After more than an hour of testimony, Brown said the petitioner promises to pay 100 percent of fire district calls to the facility.

“That would be great,” Handley said.

Officials said that if necessary, the hearing would be continued to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kane County Branch Court, 530 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Parents in Batavia School District 101 may get the option of sending their children to kindergarten on a full-day basis, but no earlier than the 2017-18 school year.

“We believe 90 percent of families would opt to take advantage of a full-day kindergarten program,” chief academic officer Brad Newkirk told the Batavia school board late last month.

Currently, kindergartners in Batavia attend school on a half-day schedule.

Most surrounding school districts offer full-day kindergarten, and Batavia did as well until budget constraints forced it to return to the half-day model.

Under state statute, school districts are required to offer a halfday kindergarten program, even if the full-day model is available.

After hearing a report from Newkirk, the school board decided to move forward with discussions on the issue at coming meetings.

The key questions are how to pay for the expansion, and what kind of curriculum would be offered.

“This would have a serious impact on our budget,” school board President Cathy Dremel said.

Indeed, additional staffing costs alone are now projected at $557,000 a year, Newkirk said, and that is based on the current kindergarten enrollment of 342 students.

There also would be a cost of about $14,000 to develop a curriculum, Newkirk said. Options include separate curriculum for the

“A significant effort would need to be put into developing a full-day curriculum and communicating the difference to families,” Newkirk told the board.

Either way, kindergarten would remain “a language-rich, playbased program,” Newkirk said.

District enrollment has declined over the last three or four years, Newkirk said, so classroom space is available to offer full-day kindergarten.

“We believe enrollment is going to stabilize,” Newkirk said.

In a related issue, the board voted 5-2 to eliminate the fee for children attending the district’s preschool program, held in the Early Childhood Center at Alice Gustafson School, and go to a lottery-based system.

Elimination of the tuition requirement will cost the district about $30,000 a year, Newkirk said.

“I really don’t know what kind of response we’ll get,” Newkirk told the board, “but this will take one more barrier off the table.”

Now, there are about 45 students in the program, plus special-needs children, Newkirk said.

ST. CHARLES – Financial problems have prompted RiverFest organizers to rethink the annual June event.

Vanessa Bell-LaSota presented the proposed, pared-down plans Monday to the St. Charles Government Operations Committee as aldermen considered whether they would forgive the $11,421.62 the city is owed from 2015.

Because inclement weather can affect RiverFest’s moneymaking potential – as it did last year – Bell-LaSota said organizers seek to create a weather-proof event that would reduce its footprint to Pottawatomie Park and center on the dragon boat races with the possibility of keeping the carnival, as it is a “reliable” revenue source.

Costs would be reduced further by eliminating the paid executive director position and reducing the event from three days to two, Bell-LaSota said.

She said the event would also have a different name – Festival of the Fox – to avoid expectations associated with RiverFest, which included live enter-

tainment and other activities downtown.

Her co-presenter, John Olson, described it as going “back to our basics.”

Aldermen struggled with what they would support financially. The options included seeking full payment, forgiving the payment, and forgiving the payment while reducing the amount of funding provided in the 2016-17 funding request.

Both 4th Ward aldermen said the issue is tough. Jo Krieger noted the uncertainty with the state, and Steve Gaugel said reducing the scope is essential.

But, he said, “I would have a very hard time supporting forgiving the $11,000 as it stands right now.”

First Ward Alderman Ron Silkaitis was among those who expressed concern that a smaller event based in Pottawatomie Park would reduce business downtown.

Others noted the popularity of the dragon boat races.

“Save the dragon boat races,” Mayor Ray Rogina said.

No vote was taken, as no formal funding request has been submitted.

Zika virus shows the globalization of health threats BLOOMBERG VIEW An emergency meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, about an incurable tropical disease now “spreading explosively” does not sound good. But, in fact, the World Health Organization’s swift response to the Zika virus is encouraging – both in itself and as an example of how to respond to such outbreaks, which are likely to become more common in a warmer and more connected world.

Zika is a formerly rare disease that has now spread to Brazil and 22 other countries, nearly all in the Americas.

A cousin of yellow fever, Zika is transported by mosquitoes and appears to afflict unborn children with a potentially crippling neurological disorder. When pregnant women contract the virus, it seems to put their babies at greater risk of microcephaly, a condition that includes smaller-than-normal skulls, stunted development and sometimes death.

The threat is not global; the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that for most Americans, Zika is “not something they need to worry about.” It’s one of the paradoxes of modern life: As climate change and globalization increase the occasions for anxiety, the need to keep perspective will only grow.

There are sensible steps to take against the Zika virus, or similar outbreaks in the future. One is to strengthen not just the WHO but public health operations in developing countries: They need the competence and resources to identify diseases quickly and respond aggressively. Avoiding travel to affected areas also can make sense – in the case of Zika, for pregnant women or those who might become pregnant.

A more long-term response to Zika and other mosquito-borne viruses is to better control the pests that carry the disease.

That’s all to the good: Those mosquitoes also spread dengue fever and yellow fever, plagues of poor nations that kill tens of thousands yet until now have failed to attract the resources or attention needed to eradicate them.

Increasingly, tropical disease is no longer confined to the tropics. That’s why a global response to these outbreaks – as ominous as it may sound – makes the most sense.

the United States. He has never provided any proof of this outrageous charge. The president was, in fact, born in Hawaii and has a birth certificate confirmed by the state of Hawaii. When asked over and over by the media, Trump refused to acknowledge this fact.

What seems his most amazing whopper was when Trump claimed that he watched on television a heavy Arab population in New Jersey celebrating when the towers in New York were destroyed on 9/11.

Fact checkers have analyzed the recorded media. There is absolutely no evidence that anything like this took place. Furthermore, when in-

terrogated by the media, he refused to retract or provide any proof of this alleged fact. He has used this to justify his claim that all Muslims should be banned from immigrating to this country.

His most recent one was when he said he had something to do with the release of the American hostages in Iran. Was he helping the secretary of state in the negotiations with Iran? I don’t think so!

The times where he smeared the personalities of his opponents are too numerous to mention. Do we want an authoritarian as president?

Every team deals with injuries, but few to the extent that Geneva and coach Kim Hostman have had to endure.

Beitzel also has helped guide some of the inexperienced gymnasts into those bigger roles, hoping to continue to persevere, as the team has done for much of the season.

During last weekend’s IHSA state finals at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon, many teams were able to produce strike after strike as well as pick up spares when needed, and that buried the Saints toward the back of the standings.

The Saints finished in 21st place out of 24 teams, despite averaging a 203.6, which wasn’t much lower than the 209.3 they averaged in last year’s finals when they brought home a third-place trophy.

Stevenson won the title with a 222.7 average, edging Rockton Hononegah by 40 pins.

“We have no excuses, but this is how I felt it went for our team,” Saints coach Steve Dessauer said. “Our team is really good at hitting their target and they were trying to find three- or four-inch boards, while many teams were able to find six to eight inches of play area.

The pattern didn’t suit our players as well as the others, but I wouldn’t say we under produced, but some other people ran away with it.”

Junior Dean Mudlong advanced to Saturday’s individual finals and placed 13th while establishing a school-record average of 228.3 in the finals.

He bested the 226.2 Domenick Strauss averaged last year when he took fourth

place.

“Teams were able to string a lot, so that was a big opposition to us,” Mudlong said. “We were still able to make spares, but we didn’t have as much room as the other teams with power players. The power players were able to throw the ball almost anywhere, so it came down to making shots and we were making our spares pretty good, but it wasn’t enough.”

Being the lone Saint to compete Saturday might have felt strange for Mudlong, whose high was a 276 in his second game of his final round, but it didn’t rattle him.

“I had my team to back me up on the lanes, cheering for me, which was nice of them,” he said. “I had put in a lot of work in the offseason to accomplish this, and one of my biggest goals was to get myself a record for the school, so that was a big accomplishment.”

Junior Kyle Middendorf and senior Cole Cartee were the two other Saints to roll in all six games Friday, averaging a 209.5 and 199.3, respectively. Middendorf added a high of 254. Sophomore Wes Cordray contributed in five games, averaging a 190.5, junior Andrew Culbertson also appeared in five games, averaging a 187, while freshman Aaron Cordray rolled a 207 and 203.

“It seemed like we handled it pretty well, but we just didn’t perform as well as we wanted,” Cartee said. “Once we realized we weren’t going to qualify for

the second day we still had a lot of fun and we got to come back to cheer Dean on.”

This was the first appearance at state for half of the team and only Mudlong appeared in all 12 games last season.

Cartee and Culbertson also competed at state last January.

“We’ve gone now two years in a row which is pretty unbelievable,” Dessauer said. “We’ve got a good coaching staff and had another quality year. Now we’ll look forward to doing something to increase ball speed and rev rate and try to get better.”

Cartee will be the lone loss to graduation, but his departure will be immense.

“He’s a solid leader through and through and he leads by example,” Dessauer said. “He made sure our expectations were met.”

Mudlong agrees.

“We do lose a big score and a good leader in Cole, but I feel we’ll be all right,” he said. “We’ll definitely miss him because he’s been a big part of this team, but we should hopefully be able to pick up and fill his shoes.”

Shoes that helped make history.

“I never could’ve imagined doing what we’ve done,” Cartee said. “Freshmen year we missed going to state by six pins but kept getting closer and closer and then finally got there last year and then did it again this year. I’m so happy of all the guys to make it to state two consecutive times.”

“We’ve really come together as a team because of everything we’ve gone through,” Beitzel said. “There have been a number of girls, myself included, that have had to take on more events. Everyone has just stepped up and helped out wherever they can and it’s made us closer and more supportive of each other throughout the season.”

Sophomore Molly Lambillotte is another gymnast who has seen an increased role, especially of late, winning the floor exercise (9.3) at Wednesday’s dual meet with the Waubonsie Valley/Metea Valley co-op.

Lambillotte said she never would want to see teammates injured, but said it has provided the girls competing an extra bit of motivation.

“You see someone injured and you know how much they want to be out there with us,” Lambillotte said. “We want to do well for them, not just ourselves. Whether or not they can compete, they support us so well. It really makes us that much more of a team because of it. Their support has meant so much.”

Injuries are a part of any sport, and Hostman was well-aware of that. Although she hasn’t had to deal with injuries quite to this extent in her time at Geneva, she’s seen that perseverance from her group pay off.

A fourth-place finish at Saturday’s conference meet was one instance, as was the team putting together a score of near 140 (138.9) without four of its top performers in the meet before conference.

“It’s been a challenging year for sure,” Hostman said. “We still feel at our best, we’re a very competitive group with the girls we have. A number of younger girls have stepped up and gotten experience, and it’s really been amazing how well they’ve done

Ford buzzer beater lifts St. Charles East over North

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East’s last offensive possession summed up Saturday night’s game.

It didn’t go as planned, it wasn’t pretty, but the result was all that mattered.

East senior J.T. Ford found himself with the ball and his team trailing, and he knocked down a jumper from the right wing as time expired to give the Saints a 46-45 win over St. Charles North in the latest edition of the crosstown and Upstate Eight Conference River Division rivalry.

“It didn’t go as we planned. We didn’t get the look we wanted and it was just kind of an in-rhythm shot,” Ford said.

“I knew the time was running down so I had to shoot it and it was pretty lucky to be honest.”

Ford finished with a team-high 17 points, none of which proved more important than his five in the final minute. After a Griffin Hammer free throw put North up 45-41 with 1:09 to play, Ford answered with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one.

North had two opportunities after that point to close the game out when both Jake Spaniol and Mikey Schroeder had 1-and-1 free-throw attempts.

Both seniors misfired, the latter of which gave East the ball with 11.6 seconds left after a timeout by its coach Pat Woods.

“North did a great job of denying our play and J.T. just made a great shot,” Woods said. “I told (North coach Tom Poulin) that we really didn’t deserve to win that game. To be honest, we just got lucky and hit that shot at the end.

That’s the reality of it, but it was certainly nice to get this one tonight.”

East (11-8, 5-3 UEC River) trailed for just about the entire game leading up to Ford’s buzzer beater. Ford’s first points of the game were on his first shot, a 3-pointer, which gave the Saints a 5-3 lead. North led from that point until the final possession.

The loss summed up much of what has been a frustrating season for North (3-12, 1-7) and somewhat spoiled one of the best games of the season by Schroeder. The senior guard scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in first half, knocking down four 3-pointers.

Poulin felt there were many positives his team could take away from Saturday’s game, despite the outcome.

“I thought we did a real nice job defensively all game long,” Poulin said.

“To keep them in the 40s ... I mean we had a week of preparation and put together a good defensive game plan and the guys executed it. I’m very proud of our guys coming over here in this environment and putting ourselves in a

Poulin has spoken of lapses during many of the North Stars’ games this season, but there wasn’t necessarily a noticeable one Saturday night. Even Ford’s shot was a highly-contested jumper that happened to find its way in.

But take nothing away from the Saints. A team that has battled injuries got to see a familiar teammate on the court Saturday as James McQuillan saw his first game action since Dec. 6 because of a fractured left foot.

In his absence as the team’s starting point guard, Woods has continued to shuffle in names and one stepped up Saturday. Junior Zach Mitchell joined Ford in double figures with 15 points, knocking down three 3-pointers in the third quarter when North was trying to pull away.

“Zach told me he was feeling good at one point and we ran a play designed for him and he knocked it down,” Woods said. “He did a great job making shots when he was open and a great job attacking when he needed to. He was a lot better, which is definitely something we needed tonight.”

East kept itself in conversation for the UEC River title discussion, but still trails leader Batavia (8-0 UEC River) in the loss column by three games. The Saints still host Batavia (Feb. 24) as one of the Bulldogs’ second-half, conference road games that also sees them head to Geneva and Larkin.

But Woods said as much as a conference title has been a goal for this team since the beginning of the season, it’s all about controlling what they are able to after suffering that third conference loss Friday to Elgin.

“Mathematically, we’re definitely still in this,” Woods said. “But, to be honest, we’re not really worried about anyone but ourselves right now. We just have to do our job and win these conference games going forward. By no means do we have any easy games, nor do I think this thing is over, but we have to take care of our business.”

Poor free-throw shooting plagued the North Stars. North had three opportunities in the third quarter to tie the game at the free-throw line, but were unable to connect. The squad only made nine of 19 attempts.

“When you give up seven offensive rebounds, score only 40 points and you miss ten free throws, that’s not the way to win a ballgame,” North coach Sean Masoncup said.

Claire Jakaitis, the North Stars’ leading scorer, saw limited action because of fouls. The senior forward had seven points.

“When your best player is on the bench for two-thirds of the game because of foul trouble, there is not much you can do about it,” Masoncup said.

Kyla Helsel led North with 12 points, all on 3-pointers. Teammate Sam Sample chipped in nine.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East girls basketball team finally played 32 minutes of basketball Saturday night in its hotly contested crosstown matchup with St. Charles North.

In previous close games this season, the Saints would keep pace with their foe until late into the fourth quarter but would not be able to finish.

Not Saturday. East took control in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to edge North, 46-43, in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

“I would agree that we played 32 minutes tonight,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “We’ve been talking about that all week ... talking about finishing quarters, halves and games.

I told them that they did that tonight.

Everyone who set a foot on the floor tonight did a great job.”

The host Saints took the lead, 17-16, with 40 seconds left in the first quarter on bucket by Sam Munroe (12 points).

The Saints increased the margin to five with a 30-25 halftime lead.

East sophomore Sara Rosenfeldt scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first 16 minutes.

North tied the score at 40 with three minutes left in the contest on a Morgan Rosencrants free throw.

East (10-14, 6-4 UEC River) retook the lead, 41-40, a minute later when Hannah Vitkus (12 points) connected on another free throw.

The rest of the Saints’ scoring took place at the charity stripe as North was forced to foul in an effort to regain the ball.

Munroe made three trips to the free-throw line for East in the last minute of the game, hitting on five six attempts to keep the Saints ahead. Her last free throw with 11.3 seconds left put the Saints up, 46-43.

“We had a lot intensity coming into it from the last time we played North where we had them up the whole entire game until the fourth quarter,” Munroe said. “So I think coming off that game just really motivated us to do well today.”

North (17-8, 4-5 UEC River) tried to set up a last second shot to tie the game but turned the ball over with 2.4 seconds to play.

East’s McQuillan returns to lineup

It’s been a roller-coaster season filled with injuries for St. Charles East. None was bigger than when starting senior point guard James McQuillan suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot Dec. 6 against St. Patrick.

The injury forced McQuillan to miss 13 games, in which East went 6-7, but the senior returned to the floor Saturday night against rival St. Charles North.

Although McQuillan did not start the game, and played just 1:44 of the beginning of the second quarter, he was happy to be back out on the court, in uniform, with his teammates.

“It was a little weird, but also exciting,” McQuillan said. “I still have a lot of work to do to get where I want to be, but it’s a start. It’s a stepping stone. I really can’t even begin to tell you how much it meant for the coaching staff to put me in. It’s awesome that they had the confidence to put me in, even if it was only for a minute or two.”

That was the plan. East coach Pat Woods knew it wasn’t going to be for long, but with McQuillan a senior, in what could be his final opportunity to play in the crosstown rivalry, he wanted to make sure McQuillan saw the court.

“It was nice. With him being a senior, in this rivalry, we wanted him to be out there,” Woods said. “He wasn’t in for very long, but we ran a couple of plays for him just to get his feet wet. We’re just trying to bring him back slowly and we’re glad he had the opportunity to play against these guys. These games are memories that he’ll remember for the rest of his life.”

It helped that McQuillan saw teammate J.T. Ford knock down a game-winning jumper at the buzzer, allowing the East Orange Fever student section – one that cheered McQuillan loudly on his first touch of the ball – to storm the court.

The atmosphere, whether it be North or any other opponent, was another reason why McQuillan was happy to see the floor.

“We have the best fans anywhere,” he said. “Any chance you get to play in front of them, in a game like this, you don’t want to pass it up because it’s worth everything to me.”

It’s been a tough season – with just three wins – and even tougher for seniors like Mikey Schroeder. The fact records are seemingly thrown out the door once the postseason hits, coach Tom Poulin got to see his guard play one of his best games of the season Saturday.

Schroeder came out firing, scoring 12 points in the first quarter and finished with 18 of his game-high 23 points in the first half.

“We wanted Mike to throw the first punch,” Poulin said. “We got him the ball early and he got some confidence going. I told him before the game, I said ‘Don’t let us lose. You’re good enough.’

There’s not a day that goes by, game or practice, that he doesn’t go 100 percent. He deserves to have moments like (Saturday) where he steps up and gets us off to a good start.”

His four 3-pointers came at important times, one of which came a few seconds before the end of the third quarter and helped North lead for most of Saturday’s contest.

Poulin has continued to instill in his kids that they are good enough to play with teams in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division, and they showed that very thing Saturday night.

It won’t be easy sledding for East, however, with two games against Larkin and one each against Geneva and conference-leading Batavia still to play.

Teddy bears have been popular toys since the first one was created in 1902, but the story about Teddy Roosevelt and the bear cub is now revealed to be a myth. In November 1902, President Teddy Roosevelt went hunting for bears in Mississippi. The others in his hunting party shot some bears, but he had not seen one. So the hunters found an old, sick bear and tied it to a tree for the president to shoot. He declared it was “unsportsman-like” and did not shoot. The story got to the press and a cartoon showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot the old bear. Later cartoons made the bear smaller and cuter. That same year, a candy-shop owner put two of his wife’s handmade bears in the window and was given permission by the president to call them “Teddy’s bears.” In 1903, the Steiff Company of Germany made some toy bears and soon heard about the American Teddy bear, so they sold theirs with that appealing name. Over the years, the bears have changed to a younger look, with short arms and turned-up noses. But the name remains. Today, a collector can find a vintage Teddy with glass or plastic eyes, and brown, white, tan or even red fur of mohair or polyester.

Some are small and hold a perfume bottle, some have eyes that light up and some are more than five feet tall. A lucky bidder bought a 1930s red mohair “electric eye” Teddy bear for $448, even though it was worn and the eyes didn’t work. *** Q: I have a tea set marked “Colclough, Bone China, Made in England.” The name of the pattern, “Amanda,” is also marked on the bottom of the pieces. It became Colclough China, Ltd.,

It merged with Ridgeway in 1955 and Colclough and Ridgeway became part of the Royal Doulton Group in the early 1970s. Colclough production was discontinued in 1996. In 1999, biologist Sonke Johnsen discovered a deep-sea octopus called Stauroteuthis syrtensis that has developed glowing suckers on its tentacles.

This species lives about 2,500 feet down in the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists in a research submarine were able to capture several of these small octopuses which are about the size of a fist.

There are more than 150 species of octopus, all with eight tentacles. These soft-bodied invertebrates (animals without a backbone) range in size. One species is no bigger than your thumb, while the Pacific giant octopus grows to be ten or more feet from the tip of one tentacle to another and can weigh up to 50 pounds.

The life of an octopus is one of constant peril. Crabs and small fish like to dine on their eggs and young.

A grown octopus must always watch out for other predators in the sea.

To escape from a predator, an octopus will squirt out a cloud of ink. Thousands of feet down, where the sea is already inky black, they squirt a glow-in-the-dark ink.

What’s Missing?

The most deadly predator is the moray eel.

It can slip into the same crevice where the octopus hides. Its strong jaws can tear off an octopus’ tentacle!

If an octopus loses a tentacle, it can grow a replacement.

Find the octopus that has only seven tentacles.

In the laboratory, away from the sub’s bright lights, they saw the tentacles glow blue-green.

“It would be as if your hand turned into a light bulb,” Johnsen says.

Why did suckers turn into light bulbs? Adapting to the deep ocean is the most likely cause of the change. Blue-green light travels the farthest through water and is useful for attracting prey and mates.

Eight of a Kind

The octopus can change color whenever it wishes. Danger causes it to turn pale and excitement causes it to “blush.” Its skin is covered with bumps and warts. To hide, an octopus can not only change its skin color, it can also raise and lower its bumps to make itself warty or smooth.

Certain kinds of octopus can become almost transparent and nearly “disappear” from a predator.

Herd immunity helps to protect: • Small children, especially infants, who either are too young to be immunized or haven’t had enough doses to be fully protected.

• People who have problems with their immune systems, many of whom can’t get vaccines, and all of whom are more susceptible to infections.

Herd immunity works when enough people are immunized. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults get a Tdap vaccine (which protects against pertussis, along with tetanus and diphtheria) in place of one of their regular tetanus boosters (the Td shot that is recommended for adults every 10 years).

You can get the Tdap vaccine no matter when you last received a Td shot. Getting vaccinated with Tdap at least two weeks before coming into close contact with an infant is especially important.

By getting a Tdap vaccine, you’ll be helping to keep your grandkids healthy. Even though that’s the main message of this column, it is worth remembering we adults also need protection against the germs spread by children. I once caught what I think was whooping cough from a child who was visiting us. I had not gotten a Tdap vaccine.

I have since corrected that error. Whooping cough is no fun.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and live with my mother and stepfather. I was only 8 when my parents were divorced, and when my mom married my stepfather I was 10. I like my stepfather. He is very good to me and makes my mom very happy.

Dear Reader: It’s not far-fetched. Even if you were immunized against pertussis (the bacteria that cause whooping cough) as a child, you might need a booster shot.

Why? Because pertussis is highly contagious, and without a booster shot you are at some risk for getting it. And if you get it, you could pass it on to your grandkids.

Whooping cough got its name because the bacterial infection causes violent coughing. The coughing makes it hard to breathe and produces a deep “whooping” sound.

Pertussis can occur at any age. If infants and young children get it, they are particularly at risk to become seriously ill.

When I went to medical school, a vaccine for pertussis was radically reducing the number of cases. It was another example of how infectious diseases were going away because of vaccines. The vaccine has, indeed, made a huge difference. But vaccines work only if people take them, and not every vaccine offers lifetime protection.

Unfortunately, many people resist getting vaccines, and the protective effects of the pertussis vaccine tend to decline over time. As a result, the number of pertussis cases in the United States has increased in recent years.

There were about 17,000 reported cases in 2009; in 2014, there were nearly 33,000 cases.

To keep kids healthy, adults need to get immunized, too. That’s because of something called “herd immunity.” When enough people are immunized against a disease, it be-

Dear Abby: We recently bought a new home and have discovered our elderly neighbors are caring for their grandson’s dog.

The dog lives in a 3-by-6foot area right next to our patio. The poor animal receives little attention and is rarely cleaned up after. As a consequence, our patio reeks of dog feces, and we are overwhelmed by flies.

I feel bad for the couple, and I resent the grandson for allowing his dog to be neglected and for failing to have any consideration for the stench that makes our patio off-limits to us.

George Carlin, a comedian, actor and author who died in 2008, said, “If you can’t beat them, arrange to have them beaten.”

Today’s North-South hands, the contract of three no-trump and West’s lead of the spade five are the same as yesterday’s. Then, when declarer played dummy’s queen, it held the trick. Today, East takes the queen with his ace and returns the spade 10 (high from a remaining doubleton). How should South plan the play?

Declarer starts with eight top tricks: one spade, three hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. A ninth trick is sure to come from clubs or might appear from hearts if the suit splits 3-3.

First, declarer should duck the second trick to cut the communications between the defenders. After East wins that trick and leads a third spade, how should South continue?

East’s carding implies that spades are 5-3, not 4-4. So declarer must strain to keep West off the lead.

After winning the third spade, South plays off his top hearts, hoping for a 3-3 break. When that does not work, declarer should cash his club ace and king, not take the finesse. Here, the queen drops, and South is home with an overtrick. But if the club queen does not appear, declarer leads a third club, hoping that East has to win the trick. It is an example of avoidance play.

Finally, note that if South had played dummy’s spade six at trick one, East would have put in his 10, not won with the ace. When dummy has a queen or king like this, East should (almost always) keep his ace to squash that high honor.
