SUPER SNOWY SHUFFLE Big turnout for Geneva race despite winter storm

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The driving snow only started bothering Geneva resident Morgan Connell during the last leg of Sunday’s Super Shuffle 5K. “That was the real test,” Connell said. “It was hard to see.”

The snow and wind provided a few challenges to Connell and others participating in the Geneva Park District event, which helps raise funds for the park district’s scholarship fund for needy families. This was the fifth year of the event.

“Getting one’s footing was a little bit difficult because of the snow,” said Connell, who ran the 3.1-mile race for the first time Sunday.

After the race, Connell and other race participants along with their families were relaxing at a post-race celebration at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center.

Despite the snowy weather, Batavia resident Eric Wedow decided to run the race shirtless.

“I’ve run shirtless in colder weather,” Wedow said. “There is nothing like running a race in the middle of a blizzard. It gives everybody something to talk about afterwards.”

By mid-afternoon, the storm had dumped more than 10 inches of snow on parts of central Kane County. A blizzard warning was in effect through midnight.

The storm caused about 200 people to drop out of the race, Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte said.

“We had 670 people sign up, and just 400 came to the event,” Lambillotte said. “I am surprised so many people showed up.”

Lambillotte has participated in every race, and wasn’t about to miss this year’s race.

“I live in Geneva and started digging out at 7:30 a.m. to get here,” she said.

This isn’t the first time Super Shuffle 5K organizers have had to deal with less-than-

Geneva Park District officials were out at 3 a.m. Sunday getting Geneva Middle School South’s parking lot ready for the arrival of the participants.

“This is the first time we’ve

had near-blizzard conditions during the race,” said Larry Gabriel, the park district’s superintendent of parks and properties.

As in past years, Gabriel participated in Sunday’s race.

“There is a true spirit of camaraderie among the runners,” he said.

Snow forces school closures in Tri-Cities On the Web

Tri-Cities area school districts have canceled classes Monday because of blowing and drifting snow across the region.

Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles and Kaneland school district have canceled classes.

Classes are also canceled at Kaneland’s Fox Valley Career Center, and the Small World Preschool at Fox Valley Career Center.

In addition, West Aurora High School in Aurora will start later than usual – at 8:55 a.m. All middle schools in the West Aurora School District will also start later, at 9:35 a.m.

As of Sunday night, some parts of central Kane County had received more than 16 inches of snow, including North Aurora, according to the National Weather Service. Sunday’s first major snowstorm of the season made roads treacherous and canceled events throughout the region.

Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Pat Gengler had advised motorists to avoid travel Sunday night.

“We’ve had a lot of cars stuck in ditches and even in some cases, the middle of the road,” Gengler wrote in an email.

A blizzard warning was in effect for much of Sunday afternoon and evening. Early Sunday evening, Gengler wrote that “road conditions in western Kane County have deteriorated to the point all roads west of Route 47 are basically impassable.”

He also wrote that the new bridge on Route 38 near the border with DuPage County is also impassable.

“Anyone traveling should be prepared to be stranded for an extended period of time,”

Gengler wrote. “We anticipate conditions getting to the point where we are not able to get to people who become stuck.”

The storm canceled the Rosary Sports Boosters’ 35th annual Super Bowl Party Sunday at the Turf Room in North Aurora. A future replacement event will be planned, according to Rosary High School’s Facebook page.

Despite the storm, the Denny’s restaurant in North Aurora was filled with customers earlier in the day.

“I’m surprised that we are busy,” Denny’s general manager Kermith Bilbao said. “I didn’t think we would get anybody.”

Bilbao said he felt the need to keep the restaurant open.

“Everybody needs to eat,” he said.

The restaurant had also been open during the blizzard of 2011. That year, 20 inches of snow fell on the area on Feb. 1 and 2.

“It was hard to open the restaurant because the snow was against the doors,” Bilbao said.

ST. CHARLES – Meredith Murphy is quite familiar with downtown St. Charles.

Once a resident of that part of the city, Murphy said she wanted to see St. Charles revived and wondered how she could help. Murphy found her answer in a riverfront Fox Island Square suite.

“I always loved the space,” she said.

In about two months, she transformed Suite 180 into Bombshell Blowout Boutique, a blow-dry bar that will offer blowouts, updos, facials, makeup application and massages. It also is available for groups, including bridal and prom parties.

Although Bombshell hasn’t yet opened – the target date is Feb. 9 – Murphy welcomed visitors to the 1 W. Illinois St. space Saturday eve-

ning for an open house.

“She’s definitely pulled this together,” her husband, Brian Murphy, said. “It was a shell.”

As Meredith Murphy led visitors around the boutique, she pointed out features she handcrafted, salvaged from Goodwill and got for a discount. But, she stressed, not all the handiwork was hers.

Friends came out of the woodwork to help with such tasks as painting and scrubbing floors, she said.

“Everyone played a role,” she said.

The boutique boasts a fireplace, brick walls, hardwood floors and views of the Fox River. Meredith Murphy said she wanted to create a place where women can spend time together without the distractions of TVs or iPads.

“I wanted women to take a breath, take in the scenery,” she said.

Mooseheart falls to York

One night after spotting St. Charles East a swift 10-0 lead, the Bulldogs dug a deeper hole, 12-0, to West Aurora on Saturday during a 68-51 loss to the Blackhawks in the nightcap of the 22nd annual Jim & Sylvia Roberts Batavia Night of Hoops.

“We don’t come out aggressive,” Batavia junior guard Canaan Coffey said. “The other team gets the ball and pushes it and gets offensive rebounds early in games, which is exactly what we don’t want them to do. We just need to focus on coming out strong, and finishing, as well.”

The Bulldogs (13-12) missed their first 11 shots before Coffey drilled a trio of 3-pointers to bring Batavia within 14-9 by the end of the quarter. But the Blackhawks renewed their surge in the second quarter, replenishing their lead to 13 by halftime.

Other than the rotten start, the Bulldogs were mostly competitive against the favored Blackhawks (14-6).

“It’s kind of random,” Coffey said of Batavia’s early-game woes. “Sometimes we feel intimidated by teams, teams that we know that have a good reputation, a good record, are good on paper. We just come out slow. We need to come out intense, intense, intense and just be active everywhere.”

West Aurora boasts a Division I recruit in Illinois Statebound wing Roland Griffin.

While Griffin (19 points, nine rebounds) was effective, Blackhawks guard Marquis Howard proved even more of a handful, counting four 3-pointers among his 24 points.

Howard said the Blackhawks derived inspiration from a hotly contested Benet-Highland Park game that preceded the Batavia-West Aurora matchup.

The loss was the third straight for Batavia, albeit against the team’s third straight quality opponent after previous setbacks to Geneva and St. Charles East.

“They do a lot of things well,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos

said of West Aurora. “They shoot the ball well. I mean, they’re not just Roland Griffin.

The guards shoot it, they handle it, and they disrupt you offensively just enough to make you uncomfortable. … I never felt we got into an offensive rhythm the whole second half.

We were at the mercy of some of our guys making plays. You

can’t do that.”

The Bulldogs were especially reliant on Coffey, who poured in a game-high 27 points, 18 of those coming from beyond the arc.

Junior guard Kamontez Thomas added 11 points for the Bulldogs, who came no closer than 11 points during the second half.

The Mooseheart boys basketball team fell apart during the middle portion of its Night of Hoops matchup with York as the Dukes went on a 30-2 blitz spanning the entire second quarter and the first 3:30 minutes of the third quarter.

Mooseheart (12-8) was within 11-9 of York after the first quarter but the Dukes ballooned their lead to 41-11 before the Ramblers finally ended the painful drought with a Josh Gordon layup during the third quarter.

The Class 1A Ramblers came in a heavy underdog against 4A York, which improved to 13-9.

“We play teams like this so we can do better in our regional,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said. “This today, I was disappointed in how we played because I thought we’d have a lot better showing than what we did today.”

Despite the Ramblers’ huge deficit, Mooseheart senior forward Hameed Odunewu kept the crowd buzzing, particularly in the fourth quarter, when he scored 16 of his 22 points. The stat-stuffing defensive menace also blocked eight shots, had seven steals, grabbed nine rebounds and closed the scoring with an explosive, left-handed dunk.

“One thing about him, he’s a great competitor, and you know what, we were down, and he didn’t want to be embarrassed,” Ahrens said. “And I know it’s against their second unit, third unit, whatever.

We realize that, but I was really happy that our kids didn’t quit.”

Point guard Ramiro Sanches scored 10 points and Gordon added 11 rebounds and six points for the Ramblers.

The appearance was the final of Mooseheart’s two-year agreement to participate in Night of Hoops. The Ramblers won the IHSA Class 1A state championship in 2013-14.

The Mooseheart-York game was the second of four contests at Night of Hoops. In other action, Benet defeated Bartonville Limestone, 47-42, and St. Joseph was upset at the buzzer

East coach Lori Drumtra said she was proud of how her team played. She said she wasn’t sure what to expect after last week’s win over firstplace Geneva.

“I knew it was gonna be a tough game. They [Batavia] were tough on us the first time we played them,” Drumtra said. “We handed Geneva their first conference loss, which was such a high, and sometimes there’s a little bit of a

let-down. But we weathered the storm.”

Drumtra said she was also impressed with how Claussner played, despite being sick.

“Batavia did a great job containing her,” she said. “I took her out a lot in the first half to rest her, but she’s such a competitor. She gave me everything she had.”

Claussner said she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to play because she was so sick Friday night.

“It’s my senior year, so I had to do it,” she said. “I wasn’t sure if I could play the whole game. But coach Drumtra let me sleep until game time and she gave me enough rest.”

Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said he was mostly pleased

with his team’s effort.

“We got beat on two 3-pointers,” Jensen said. “I thought we did a decent job. I told the girls I was proud and super-pumped with how they played. We did the right things to get ready and we played a complete game.”

The Bulldogs fell to 13-13 overall, 6-5 in UEC River play.

Jensen said he’s trying to stay positive, despite a disappointing loss.

“We did all the right things at all the right times. But sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” Jensen said. “But if you keep doing it, eventually things will work out for you. We held a star player [Claussner] to her average, and that’s a win for us.”

Gentry gets career-high 33 points in win over Huskies

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Finding the space to run the floor in the second half, the St. Charles East boys basketball team ran Naperville North out of the building in an 82-63 drubbing Saturday afternoon in the tipoff of the DVC-UEC Challenge hosted by Geneva.

Senior guard Cole Gentry had a banner day for the Saints (18-2), finishing with a career-high 33 points while adding four assists, three steals and three rebounds.

“A lot of it was my teammates helping me out there, setting good screens,” Gentry said. “It was a good team effort.”

Gentry’s performance lifted the Saints after a competitive first half saw East take a two point lead into the halftime break.

East got the scoring started early and was aided by hitting 5 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc in the first quarter, jumping out to a 24-14 lead.

Gentry hit three 3-pointers in a row in the first quarter, finishing the quarter with 11 points, before going cold from downtown in the second.

The Huskies came out with renewed intensity in the second quarter, spurred by junior guard Jelani McClain, and opened the frame on an 8-0 run.

Gentry missed his next three attempts from 3 but added four more points as the Saints clung to the 36-34 lead heading to halftime.

“The majority of the adCole Gentry justments we made at the half were made defensively – we did have 36 points that half,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “We did talk about a few things we needed to do better offensively as far as screen angles and what not, attacking the basket which we obviously did in the second half and that’s kind of on Cole [Genty]. The first half I thought he was a little too passive with the ball.

Defensively, we made some adjustments on screens and matchups.”

The emergence of junior wing James McQuillan gave the Saints a needed, second scorer in the third quarter as East ran the lead back up to 16

at 62-46 heading to the fourth.

McQuillan converted on a trio of three-point plays and knocked down 2 of 3 from downtown to finish with 16 points.

“James is a really good player who can do a lot for us, and today I thought he finished really well,” Woods said. “I liked the way he attacked the basket and hit the outside 3 as well, so he had a little inside-outside going.”

McQuillan was the beneficiary on several passes from Gentry, stepping up to break the game open after Naperville North trailed 45-40 early in the third quarter.

“I ran the floor hard,” McQuillan said. “Cole Gentry gave me some good passes so kudos to him. I just picked my spots out there and if I was open, be confident and shoot it. My teammates do a great job of giving me confidence and finding it.”

Naperville North’s comeback bid after its strong, second quarter dissipated in the second half as Saints seemingly were the better conditioned team, leading to plenty of fast breaks and high-percentage scoring opportunities.

“It was nice, people ran the

floor,” Gentry said. “James [McQuillan] had a few andones by just running the floor and I found him. It was good because we got a lot of easy layups once we were able to run and spread them out.

They can’t come back when we’re getting easy layups on every possession, so that was good for us.”

The Saints’ 26-12 third quarter advantage also was aided by turning the tide on the glass. East outrebounded the Huskies 26-22 for the

game, led by senior center Jack Bronec’s eight boards.

“Rebounding-wise we were getting outrebounded at the half and wound up winning the rebounds so that was big time,” Woods said.

“It was a huge third quarter for us obviously, and that was good. I thought it was a great game, great for us to play. Naperville North is very good.

[Two]-point game at half and we were able to hang tough and blow it open a little bit so I was really happy with that.”

ST. CHARLES – You’d never know St. Charles East guard Katie Claussner was suffering from a nasty case of bronchitis as her Saints took on Batavia on Saturday night.

The senior scored 17 points to lead her team to the Upstate Eight Conference River win over the Bulldogs, 59-48. The win puts the Saints’ record at 15-7 overall and 10-2 in conference play, keeping them in second place.

“It went great, couldn’t ask for a better game,” said Claussner, who averages 18 points.

“It was really difficult because every time I inhale it’s like fire going down my throat. But I’m

feeling much better than if it’d been a loss.”

The Saints and Bulldogs traded leads several times during the first half, with Batavia trailing at halftime, 23-22.

The Saints were down 45-43 with 3 minutes left in the game when they went on an 8-0 run, including back-to-back 3-pointers.

Senior Kyra Washington hit a 3, and sophomore guard Samantha Munroe followed, as East pulled ahead, 49-45. Munroe followed her 3-pointer with a layup to complete the run, putting the Saints up 51-45.

“I think hitting those 3’s was the turning point,” Washington said. “We had a lot of momentum and were able to keep the lead. Those 3’s gave us

Large quantities of alcohol have been known to alter a person’s perception, and the results can be explosive. If you haven’t already done so, consider attending an ALAnon meeting, which may confirm this.

I’m not a medical doctor, but it would be interesting to know what your boyfriend’s physician thinks about the amount of alcohol he consumes, because the quantity you say Mike puts away may put him at risk for cirrhosis of the liver.

Dear Abby: A few years ago, my husband and I had problems. Our marriage was going downhill, but we have recently managed to work things out. My problem is, I sounded off to my mother, who had never held him in very high esteem to begin with. She lives far away, so I don’t see her often, and I’d like to pay a visit with my husband and children. When I approached my husband with the idea of seeing Mom, he told me that a few years ago she had sent him an email telling him she didn’t like him.

Dear Abby: I have a problem with blushing. Whenever I’m the center of attention, even if it’s with just one other person, my face goes bright red.

This even happens when I’m not feeling embarrassed.

I’ve learned to cope with the feeling of my face flushing. What I’m having trouble with is people’s comments about why my face is so red.

I’ve never been able to come up with a good response.

Telling them I’m not really embarrassed is met with skepticism. Please help. – Red-Faced in Memphis Dear Red-Faced: My advice is to be upfront and tell the questioner that you don’t know why it happens, but you’re not embarrassed. As you already know, blushing can happen if someone suffers from a social phobia.

In cases like that, counseling and support groups can help.

However, because you find it happening even when you are not pressured or embarrassed, discuss it with your physician to be sure there isn’t an underlying physical problem.

Dear Abby: I’ve been dating my 42-year-old boyfriend, “Mike,” for a year. I love him, but he’s a heavy drinker. He has a glass or two of whiskey on a daily basis and goes through a huge bottle of whiskey every weekend.

(He also drinks beer like water.) When I asked him to cut back, he refused because he “loves” whiskey. I have never seen him drunk or act intoxicated, so he obviously has a high tolerance.

It bothers me that Mike drinks so much and that he won’t cut back. I told him I wouldn’t marry him unless he does. My problem is, I don’t know whether he’s an alcoholic since he doesn’t ever show signs of intoxication. I’ve been told that alcoholism is a progressive disease and that it will only increase.

What constitutes an alcoholic? I don’t want to lose him, but he also has a very bad temper, and I’m afraid it’s not a good combination if we were to get married. –

Today is 2/2, so it seems only fair if a two plays a key role in a deal. This one comes from “Right Through the Pack” by Robert Darvas and Norman de Villiers Hart, which is a fun book containing 52 chapters – one for each card in the deck.

How does the spade two become critical in this deal? South is in five spades doubled. West leads the heart ace, and South ruffs with his spade three. What happens after that?

The book was originally published in 1948, when bidding was much less refined. Today, West would make a two-heart weak jump overcall. And North, over one heart, would make a negative double (or perhaps pass). As it went, no doubt North should have doubled five hearts and collected the 500-point penalty. But the vulnerability and the necessity not to ruin the story required him to bid five spades.

East understandably thought he could defeat that contract.

At the table, South led his spade queen at trick two. East won with his spade ace and returned a heart. South carefully ruffed with his spade king, not the two, then led that two to dummy’s nine. Now the contract could not be defeated. Declarer lost only two trump tricks.

Of course, if East had been a spoilsport, he would not have won the second trick. Then South would have had to fail.

The Village of Elburn, Illinois (population 5,602) is accepting applications for the position of Police Records Specialist III. This is a part-time position consisting of 16 hours per week, and reports directly to the Chief of Police. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of functions that support the records management and administrative obligations of the police department.

The duties of a Police Records Specialist III may include, data entry, receiving telephone calls and citizen visits concerning information requests and complaints, accepting payments of fines and fees, communicating with other law enforcement agencies, preparing court related documents, and other tasks as assigned.

Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to graduation from high school or equivalent with two (2) years of law enforcement records experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish successful working relationships; ability to work under pressure and/or with frequent interruptions; ability to work with angry or difficult customers. Experience with New World Systems Records Management program, Municipal Software, Inc. (MSI), and GovPayNet are a plus.

Salary is dependent on qualifications.
