his is how I met Betty Butler, as she celebrated her 94th birthday with songs and cake at the St. Charles School District 303 administration building last Tuesday.

“I’m happy to be here,” said Betty Butler. “ ... I’m happy to be anywhere!”

This is how I met Betty Butler, as she celebrated her 94th birthday with

songs and cake last Tuesday at the St. Charles School District 303 administration building.

That was right before she showed me photos of herself skydiving when she was younger, only 91 years old.

Butler worked for the district until she was 88, where she catalogued the schools’ library books into a digital format.

This was after serving in the Navy WAVES – or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service – program and working for a railroad.

I decided that day that I want to be like Betty when I grow up.

Both support groups meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. An alternative to AA, SMART Recovery emphasizes building and maintaining motivation; coping with urges; managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors; and, living a balanced life.

SMART Recovery is facilitated by a Renz Addiction Counseling Center counselor, and is open to all individuals 18 years of age or older.

Registration is not necessary, and walk-ins are welcome.

‘REALLY NO EXCUSE’

Many opportunities exist for those seeking to vote in primary

asloboda@shawmedia.com When commuters would complain about not making it to their polling place before it closed, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said he would feel bad.

But not anymore.

Now, he said, there is “really no excuse” for people not to vote.

Although the general primary election isn’t until March 15, voters can cast their ballot now through early voting.

The ballot includes candidates for such local races as Kane County Board chairman and Kane County coroner as well as federal races, including the 11th and 14th Congressional districts.

Not registered to vote? No problem. Grace period registration began Wednesday and runs through Election Day. Those individuals must, however, vote at the time of registration if they want to participate in the primary.

Both early voting and grace period registration are available only at the Kane County Clerk’s Office until Feb. 29. The facility, which is on the Kane County Government Center campus at 719 S. Batavia Ave. in Geneva, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

On Feb. 29, a host of other sites will open, including locations in St. Charles, Campton Hills, Batavia and Sugar Grove. Some sites will offer weekend hours in March.

“We urge everybody to vote early if they can,” Cunningham said, adding there is “really no reason to wait until the last minute.”

Meanwhile, the clerk’s office is readying for voters. On Wednesday, 11 new election judges gathered at the clerk’s office for training. Cunningham briefly addressed them, advising them to be aware of physical difficulties some voters may have and to treat those at the polling sites with dignity.

“We’re there to serve, remember that,” he said.

As of early Thursday, the clerk’s office reported that Kane County had 228,637 registered voters.

According to the clerk’s office, about 17 percent of registered voters participated in the 2014 general primary, which did not include a presidential race. Cunningham said he expects the national contest will generate

GENEVA – A new business, Amazing Lash Studio, has opened at Geneva Commons. It features a new concept in lash extensions, franchisee Jim Russell said.

“It started in Houston, Texas,” said Russell, a St. Charles resident. “Within 18 months, 60 stores opened. It’s one of the fastest-growing franchises in the country, and we are the first one in the Chicago area.”

The company puts on semi-permanent, individually glued-on eyelash extensions, Russell said.

“Eyelashes are not like hair. They have a 90-day life cycle, and then they grow back,” Russell said. “The extensions go right on the eyelash, never touch the skin.”

The company offers an introductory session and then a membership to have a one-hour eyelash “touchup” every month he said.

“What we’ve seen is professional women who get them, and once they have these, they don’t have to get up and put on eye makeup,” Russell said.

“It’s a time-saver.”

PechaKucha Night has informal show-and-tell

BATAVIA – If you liked show-andtell in kindergarten, you may be interested in PechaKucha Night Batavia, a local installation of a growing international trend that features engaging – and concise – presentations in a fun, beer-friendly environment.

PechaKucha Nights allow people to share their ideas, hobbies or works by using a specific format: Each presenter discusses 20 slides and has 20 seconds to discuss each one – no more, no less.

“The concept, I understand, grew out of the idea that people usually have great things to say, but they take too long to say them,” said George Scheetz, director of the Batavia Public Library District and city organizer of PechaKucha Night Batavia. “This program is supposed to preclude that.”

PechaKucha Night Batavia, Volume 2: “Leapin’ Lizards” will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 29 at Riverview Banquets, 1117 N. Washington Ave., Batavia. Scheetz hopes to follow it with three more volumes this year.

The first PechaKucha – which means “chit-chat” more or less in Japanese – took place in Tokyo in 2003.

“That’s just it – it’s purposefully unpredictable,” said Christopher Cudworth, 58, of Batavia, who will present during PechaKucha Night Batavia on Feb. 29. “And because of that, you go in knowing a little bit about what’s to be presented, but you go in with an open mind saying, ‘I’m interested in other people – what can I learn?’ ” Cudworth, an author, will speak about the wilderness of light, which relates to the topic of a book he’s writing to help people encounter nature on their own terms.

Other presenters will include Craig Foltos, owner of Foltos’ Tonsorial Parlor in Batavia, who will share what decades in a barbershop has taught him; Álvaro Amat, exhibition design director at the Chicago Field Museum; and others.

“One of the beauties of this is there’s almost no two presentations alike,” Scheetz said. “Even if you don’t like one, it’s over in six minutes and 40 seconds, so you can move on to the next one.”

Robert L. Burger, age 82, of Geneva, formerly of St. Charles, died Feb. 17, 2016, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

He was born April 4, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois.

He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1951. During his high school career he lettered in basketball, baseball, and football.

After high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy where he graduated with his B.S. in 1955. In January of 1956, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Service. Bob returned back to work at Burger Drugs. For 25 years, he coached basketball and served as athletic director at St. Patrick School in St. Charles. Bob was a member of St. Patrick Church in St. Charles. He served for six years on the St. Charles Park District.

He also served 20 years with the Boys Baseball in St. Charles.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years,

Marla; children, Robyn (Greg) Gola of Geneva, Maureen (Fattah) Sabir of Chicago, Mark (Karen) of Elburn, and Megan White of Batavia; grandchildren, Taylor and Samantha Gola, Molly and Maggie Burger, Weston White and Leila Sabir; two nieces, Nicole (Guy) Pleasant and Tara Machura.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Imogene Burger.

Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at St. Patrick Church, 400 Cedar Street, St. Charles. Interment will be private at Union Cemetery, St. Charles. ELBURN – Glenn Kahmann has been named the new library director for the Elburn-based Town and Country Public Library District. Kahmann will replace Mary Lynn Alms, who is retiring after 35 years as the library’s director. Alms’ final day will be Feb. 27. According to a news release, Kahmann has eight years of library experience, including six years as a library director in Kentucky. According to the release, he has a master’s of library science from the University of Kentucky and a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University.

“The Town and Country Public Library District is confident that, with Glenn’s leadership, we will be able to continue to provide excellent service to our residents,” the release stated. “Glenn brings us new ideas and the resources necessary to enhance the future capabilities of the library.”

South Elgin officials respond to rescue person in Fox River

SOUTH ELGIN – South Elgin police and fire district officials on Thursday responded to the Fox River for a report of a person in water, according to a South Elgin Police Department news release.

The emergency officials were called to the west side of the dam north of the intersection of Spring and North Water streets in South Elgin about 11:07 a.m., the release states. It indicated the person had a “possible self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Paramedics reportedly took the individual to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

The release indicated the incident remains under investigation by South Elgin police and that there was no risk to the public at any time.

ST. CHARLES – Hundreds of dancers are expected to gather in St. Charles this weekend for a competition awarding prizes and scholarships, according to a news release.

Open Call, which connects dancers to career opportunities in a professional performance atmosphere, features a judges panel that includes today’s top dancers, talent agents, directors and choreographers, the release said.

The event begins Friday evening with a master class by Calen Kurka from Pushing Progress Contemporary Dance and runs through Sunday at St. Charles North High School, 255 Red

Apple’s epic clash with the government won’t end well BLOOMBERG VIEW No one will ever know what was going on inside the head of one of the terrorists who went on a deadly rampage late last year in San Bernardino, California, killing 14.

But FBI investigators would like to know what was going on inside his iPhone – and Apple should do more to help them.

A federal judge has ordered Apple to assist the agency in getting access to Syed Rizwan Farook’s iPhone 5c, arguing that it probably contains information critical to the investigation.

Apple calls this government overreach and is preparing for a fight.

On the surface, the court order is fairly straightforward. The Justice Department has a warrant to search the phone, and the data in question could be crucial: It could include messages, photographs and contacts that might show whether Farook was connected to a larger terrorist network or was planning further attacks.

But Farook’s phone has a security feature that automatically clears its data after 10 incorrect attempts at entering a password.

The FBI wants Apple to create a customized version of its operating system to circumvent the security feature and allow its agents to try as many password combinations as it takes to gain access.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook sees this request more ominously: The government, he wrote in a message posted on the company’s website, has “asked us to build a backdoor to the iPhone.”

But this wouldn’t be a backdoor because it wouldn’t be built into Apple’s products – a deliberate weakness that hackers might hope to exploit. It would be a technique for opening the phone over which Apple would retain sole control, subject to court order. In fact, the order says the software need never leave the company’s campus.

It’s hardly unusual for the government to ask a company for assistance when one of its products is used in a crime. Gun purveyors are enlisted in murder investigations; telecoms must cooperate with wiretaps; banks spend more hours and dollars preventing money laundering than you’d imagine. Everyone has their orders.

To the Editor: When President Obama addressed a joint session of the Illinois General Assembly on Feb. 10, he decried a “poisonous” political environment that pushes people away from civic life and breeds cynicism towards government and elected officials.

We couldn’t agree more with the president’s assessment of the current negative political environment paralyzing our nation and more significantly to us, Springfield, our state capitol.

We acknowledge the dysfunction that has gripped our state government and the collateral damage it is in inflicting on the citizens of this state. As new state representatives representing both sides of the aisle, we want to see an enactment of a fair and balanced budget. We know we can do this through bipartisan cooperation and indeed

acknowledge the best outcome will only come through genuine compromise.

We have experience working together to address problems and know how effective bipartisan cooperation can be in achieving real solutions. Before serving in the General Assembly, we worked together on regional issues that affect our communities.

Most notably, we worked together to create the Northwest Water Planning Alliance, a group of regional leaders focused on ensuring a safe and plentiful water supply for cities and towns up and down the Fox Valley. We were a group of Republicans and Democrats who put partisanship aside to work for the common good. Now we serve together in Springfield and continue to work together on legislation.

Together we have passed bills that help local economic

development efforts, addressed the heroin crisis and ensured the continued funding of our local governments for 911 and other key services. Indeed, bipartisanship and cooperation amongst rank-and-file lawmakers still exist today in Springfield. Unfortunately we have been stymied on the larger budget debate, and this is the key issue that is having the largest and longest impact on our state. We must be able to accomplish the big things working together for the betterment of the state.

We commit to ensuring all members of the legislature are part of a meaningful dialogue on solving the state budget problem. We stand ready to work together.

Geneva stays calm down stretch, wins 8th straight regional title Class 4A Glenbard West Regional

ccasey@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Playing and beating a team three times in one season is a tough task. Sarah Meadows knew as much.

Her Geneva girls basketball team took on St. Charles North in the IHSA Class 4A Glenbard West Regional championship game Thursday night and got exactly what it expected.

The North Stars hung tough for a while, but the result was once again the same as Geneva pulled away late for a 50-41 win to beat North for the third time this season and capture the program’s eighth regional title in as many years.

“For us tonight, it was about being composed,” Meadows said. “The atmosphere got a little amped up, everyone was yelling, but that’s the postseason for you. When you play in a rivalry game that you’ve already played twice, plus the postseason, it’s a little crazy. For us, we just had to had to take a deep breath, relax and play our game.”

Geneva (23-4) jumped out to an early 13-3 advantage behind junior forward Grace Loberg and a 3-pointer from point guard Margaret Whitley – all of which forced a timeout from North coach Sean Masoncup.

After defeats by 17 and 12 points in the season’s first two matchups, Meadows knew that lead wasn’t going to remain all night.

And it didn’t.

North (22-9) fought back to trail by just two points at the end of the first quarter, and four at the halftime break.

“We gave it everything we had tonight,” Masoncup said. “I mean, every single thing that we had. Geneva is the standard for what everyone in the western suburbs wants to be, and we gave them every single thing we had without our best player.”

“The game was too much back and forth in the first half,” Loberg said. “One team would go up and then the other team would come right back, and we knew we had to stop that. Once we started playing a little more calm and consistent, we got a lead and didn’t let it up.”

offensively, and also contributed four blocks on the other side of the ball, it was Whitley’s composure as a sophomore guard that proved large.

She tallied 10 points in the game, but her court awareness has always stood out to Meadows.

“We played much smarter down the stretch also,” Meadows said. “Margaret is a very smart player and she makes good decisions with the ball. There was a time tonight when we had a fast break and pulled it out to get a better shot, and another time we kicked out an offensive board for another possession. Just smart plays with the time and score.”

“The stakes were higher in this

game,” Whitley said. “We always expect a good game with North, but we just kept saying we need to stay composed because every time we got too excited, we’d turn the ball over and they would start getting closer.”

Sophomore Grace Quinn led North with 15 points on five 3-pointers.

Both teams had to fight through physicality Thursday night, as both coaches agreed fouls could have been called in certain spots, but also was part of the postseason atmosphere.

Loberg laughed when asked about battling with any of North’s taller players, whether it be Morgan Rosencrants, Elizabeth Olsem or Anna Davern.

“It was definitely physical (in the paint),” Loberg said. “Everyone was fighting to get position, but that’s what you expect in these elimination games.

It was a good battle.”

If Loberg and the Vikings thought they got a good battle Thursday, a possible matchup with an even bigger rival in Batavia could await at the Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional at 7:30 p.m. Monday should the Bulldogs beat Glenbard North tonight. Not only did the Vikings and Bulldogs share the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title, but Batavia’s Bethany Orman hit a game-winning floater as time expired in the most recent meeting between the two – a 57-56 Bulldogs win Feb 5 at Geneva.

GLEN ELLYN – Four cherubic St. Charles North girls basketball fans marveled in unison Thursday while climbing a hill on Glenbard West’s palatial campus.

With apologies to fairy tales, the girls’ guardian/pumpkin coach chauffeur doled out some reality soon enough.

“It’s not a castle,” she said. “It’s a high school.”

It seemed apparent North coach Sean Masoncup uttered a variation of that affirmation somewhere in less picturesque surroundings – say, the bowels of the gymnasium – as Tri-Cities backers descended on the Class 4A Glenbard West Regional championship game. Longtime foil Geneva ultimately defeated North, 50-41, but the North Stars gallantly sported a resolve unseen during a pair of regular season losses to the Vikings last month.

“This is the first time in my three years here I don’t have a regret” after playing Geneva, North coach Sean Masoncup said. “The first two years, we wished. We should’ve, could’ve.

And they were the better team tonight.

There was nothing we could have done differently. We battled. That was a great high school basketball game.

And you can’t always say that.”

North needed late heroics to pull to within 17 and 12 points of Geneva during an unconventional mid-January stretch on the Upstate Eight Conference River Division schedule.

Geneva rolled on the road Jan. 12 before topping North at home one week later.

On both occasions, Masoncup termed the Vikings a “factory,” during his postgame remarks, a nod to Geneva’s sustained success that now includes eight straight regional titles and 11 successive seasons of at least 19 wins.

On Thursday, the North Stars faced the would-be machine in the wouldbe castle without the full services of 1,000-point scorer Claire Jakaitis, a versatile, 6-foot-2 senior post who played limited minutes while fighting a cold.

In addition to her nimble feet, touch around the basket and added perimeter presence, Jakaitis offered an important intangible. She was part of a team that beat Geneva at the beginning of her prep career, with Montini.

North fell behind by double digits just 5:31 into the game, but quickly recovered behind defense and clutch outside shooting to trail just 29-25 at halftime.

“I don’t like losing, but I’m OK with how we played. I’m satisfied with how we played,” Masoncup said.

Between mugging for pictures and taking turns holding the regional championship net, the Vikings conceded an added spurt from their conference rivals.

Then again, Geneva also looked inward, not unlike its foes.

“In the second quarter, we did start to rush it a little bit more, and then after halftime, we started to play Geneva ball again, and that kind of went away,” Vikings sophomore guard Stephanie Hart said.

Then, she defined what “Geneva ball” was: “Pretty much, Geneva ball is just playing as a team and working together to get the best opportunities.”

In the closing minutes, North looked primed to ensure no fan would see Geneva ball until the 2016-17 season opener. Sharpshooting sophomore Grace Quinn, whose 15 points on five 3-pointers led the North Stars, kept letting fly with a purpose.

She hit three treys in the final quarter alone, cutting the deficit to a respective nine, six and five points.

“She killed it,” Masoncup said.

“She’s been killing it all the last month and a half. She’s going to be a force the next two years, because she is a bull.

She works harder than any kid, boy or girl, I’ve ever coached.”

Now that’s a superlative any North Star should strive for. Keep it up, and North might find another: a long-awaited win against the factory.

North focused on ‘Takin’ care of business’

CHARLES – Although Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s 1970’s hit “Takin’ Care of Business” more than likely referred to something other than boys swimming, its main message is something St. Charles North coach Rob Rooney and the North Stars have on their mind as they host the IHSA St. Charles North Sectional on Saturday.

Rooney said he doesn’t want his team to get caught up in trying to win a sectional title, but rather to go swim how he knows it can.

“If teams want to worry about a sectional title, that’s their prerogative,” Rooney said. “I just want us to take care of business and swim the way we’re supposed to at this time of the year. It’s obviously a long haul from November to now, and I think the boys have done a great job thus far. But we have to keep it simple, take care of business, and the rest will play out how it should.”

Rooney continuously has preached that nothing past Saturday matters until the North Stars, fueled by Iowa-bound senior Joe Myhre, swim their races.

And all season Rooney has focused on getting to this point and having the team in top form.

“We’ve had some success, some highs and lows, but the guys have had the end of the year on their minds,” Rooney said. “There’s some very strong teams in this sectional. I think we look good, St. Charles East, DeKalb, [West Chicago/Batavia co-op] all look strong. But we need to worry about ourselves and see what happens from there.”

Time is now for East: The highlight of St. Charles East’s season is well into the past now, and with Saturday’s sectional, the team hopes to make a new memory.

On Jan. 7, the bleach blonde-haired Saints went to rival North and defeated the North Stars for the first time in several years, but that means little now in the grand scheme of what coach Joe Cabel and the Saints set out to accomplish this season.

With senior leaders John Tarpey, Nick Boryk and diver Andrew Lewarchick among the East competitors in their final sectional, they hope to make a splash – no pun intended – come Saturday to qualify for the IHSA state meet, set for Feb. 26-27 at Evanston.

Cadets coach Bill Schalz doesn’t expect his team to win the sectional, but that’s certainly not because he thinks his swimmers lack potential.

“Pretty much every guy in our sectional lineup has a chance to qualify for state ... a realistic chance,” Schalz said. “The point of sectionals is to qualify for state. For us, we just want to see how many guys we can get there.

I’m really excited for this group, to see how they swim after all the prepara-

tions all season. They have worked extremely hard to be a much better team than last year.”

Although Schalz was hesitant to name any specific swimmers – once he did, he named nearly all of them – Will Kamps is a previous state qualifier and looks to give Marmion its best shot at a state berth.

Archibald’s track successes ramble on

Ten years in, and Peter Archibald still is improving.

A senior at Loyola and a graduate of Geneva High School, Archibald is setting personal bests, breaking school records and earning national rankings as his men’s track and field career comes to a close.

“It’s a whole lot of emotions,” Archibald said. “The past 10 years have been working up to this final season.

Sometimes you see a lot of athletes not be able to make it through their entire career and end on a high note such that we’re able to do here. So, so far, I’m extremely happy that I’ve been able to make it a decade and still see growth in my final season and still see personal bests. Early on, too. We’re not waiting till the end of the season to see some marks. It’s a whirlwind of emotions, awesome to see happening. I’m just really happy to be surrounded by coaches and teammates that have helped this along the way.”

The success is especially rewarding when he thinks back to what he’s overcome. During his sophomore

He said it’s still something he deals with to this day. But working past that injury has made this senior season all the more special.

“The sophomore-year injury was a pretty bad one: Grade 2 sprain, almost a Grade 3 sprain in my ankle. There were some partially torn tendons and muscles down there. So working back from that has definitely been a challenge,” Archibald said. “It took several months and it still takes rehab to try and keep the swelling down. But I think I was able to have that sophomore year, then turn around and end up having a pretty good sophomore year and then come back from that.

“But like anyone knows from college athletics and life in general, you’re going to have some bumps and injuries along the way. It’s just the way of the sport. You’ve got to handle it; you’ve got to roll with the hits and keep moving forward. I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded by people who’ve helped me get through that kind of stuff and keep my head up and keep moving strong through the bad

“My freshman year, I was brought up with some good leadership in the senior class,” Archibald said. “Probably one of the best leaderships I’ve been under the entirety of my athletics career. So it was really a blessing to come into that and this family and everything that they provide for us.

year and finally being in a position to where we’re all leaders now, it’s pretty special.”

Certainly there’s still more to accomplish. Indoor track season continues, and outdoor track season begins next month. There still are races to be run, and Archibald has his sights set on bigger things, such as earning a trip to the NCAA regionals and beyond.

When the season ends and Archibald walks away with not one but two degrees, he’ll be like any other college graduate, looking for a job and ready to embark on the next part of his life. But for now, he’s still running and looking to finish on that high note.

“It’s the last season,” Archibald said. “A lot of these moments and opportunities that we have are going to be the last time in such a career that we’ve had. So I think it’s really important to let these things set in and realize how important they are because it’s only going to happen once and we’ve only got a couple more months. It’s really special.”

SPORTS BRIEFS Kane County-area gymnasts ready for state

PALATINE – It was a season filled with ups and downs for many area girls gymnastics teams and individuals.

But all the hard work that was put into this season will culminate for three athletes today and Saturday at the IHSA state meet at Palatine High School.

St. Charles co-op sophomores Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci and Grace Levita will join Batavia senior Megan McGee at state, with each having qualified from last week’s Glenbard West Sectional.

McGee, who has come back strong in her senior season after breaking the femur in her right leg in May 2015, qualified on floor exercise with a score of 9.275.

“I’m usually always nervous for floor,” McGee said. “I don’t really know why, because I usually have my double-full good in practice and then I get to the meet and I usually mess it up. When I tell myself I just need to calm down because I know what I’m doing, I’m all right.”

While Levita also will only compete in one event – uneven bars with her 9.15 score at sectionals – Redmond-Mattucci has her sights set on bigger goals at the state meet.

Her all-around score of 37.3 was good enough for third overall to qualify for state, but Redmond-Mattucci also qualified for state in vault, bars and floor. Her balance beam score will only count toward her allaround score this weekend.

“I am really happy the way I’m competing right now,” Redmond-Mattucci said. “I’m really proud of how my confidence has been showing. At this point, it’s all about perfecting technique before state and continuing to have as much confidence in yourself as you can.”

Preliminaries will begin today with finals starting Saturday.

Kaneland product Beebe returning to alma mater

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland and NFL alumnus Don Beebe, who played in six Super Bowls in the 1990s as a receiver with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers, will be celebrated in an all-school assembly at 2:10 p.m. March 3 at Kaneland.

Beebe will receive a commemorative golden anniversary football as part of the NFL’s recognition of the 50th Super Bowl this month. School officials will present Beebe and his family with the ball at the assembly before placing it on permanent display at Kaneland.

WHEATON – The Cantigny Golf Academy, in partnership with Callaway Golf Fitness, will offer a six-week golf fitness training program through Dr. Paul Callaway.

BATAVIA – North American Youth Sports will hold its annual spring youth basketball tournaments on April 16 at Batavia High School.

The tournament will be held in a one-day shootout format and features 12 different brackets: 4th-5th grade boys; 4th-5th grade girls; 6th grade boys; 6th grade girls; 7th grade boys; 7th grade girls; 8th grade boys; 8th grade girls; 9th-10th grade boys; 9th-10th grade girls; 11th-12 grade boys and 11th-12th grade girls.

All grades are based on the grade in which a student is currently enrolled.

When things go awry and there appears to be no ready fix, it can be useful to resort to ancient superstitions and evil curses.

It doesn’t fix the problem, of course, but it can illuminate the misery and – in some cases – bring a “feel good” moment. So, here’s a Curse of the Grumpy Screaming Toad on a big telecommunications system, an unnamed nursing home and a mis-named greeting card website.

The last one is simple. It’s about the e-card valentine from an East Coast friend that arrived two days late, on Tuesday. Not such a big deal, except the sender was unfortunately labeled a hard-hearted cheapskate until the charming greeting arrived about the time the 2017 valentine cycle began and after several cross messages of dismay and forgivenes. Listen for the Screaming Toad.

Here’s an observation: There has been same-day service to get medical records from our local hospital. A local nursing home has an unthinkably distorted and delayed process, resulting in a timeframe from early January til the time of this report to come up with a full order of records from two recent occupancies.

The office-holder does not take telephone calls, does not return messages. Bet there’s a sign about the joys of serving somewhere in that domain, right?

We finally have one batch, a month of waiting is the price, along with a dollar a page.

An incorrect date is causing further delay.

Perhaps one should ask for a daily copy, while still occupying the setting? Perhaps it is time for the Curse of the Babbling Fox? Lady, what explains this service atrocity?

Here’s one from last week that has compelled the Curse of the Loudly Screeching Owl (who?). It’s the motherly telecommunications system. Item: Day begins with no landline, no Wi-Fi. Thirty minutes on cellphone chatting with “Representative” who finally finds account, determine that “Repair” should be contacted. No, can’t transfer; it’s another number. OK, so mega telecommunications system cannot transfer a call.

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry Occupant of desk reached by redial chats for a bit but acknowledges she doesn’t do repair calls. Yet, she offers and completes a transfer.

Repair representative offers regret and suggests a next-day visit. “Impossible!” “I am a disabled journalist with deadlines to meet!”

She agrees to the urgency and schedules a visit between 1 and 5. Five minutes later, the repair guy calls to say he is 20 minutes away.

At about the same time, the landline gurgles and the computer screen flases and starts to function.

The repair guy arrives and says, “I am not here to fix anything.” (Long pause while the day’s turmoil comes to a head). He goes on to state that he has come to announce an outage in the local system.

Answer to a, “How long?” is his assurance that he knows it would not be long – because they are working on it. Meanwhile, the fix seems to be stable. (He doesn’t know this good news.) He departs.

The owl screeched in ecstasy that night.

All went well for the Wredling Middle School choir concert. Skinny Spouse reported that the music was mighty fine. He waved to granddaughter Mazy, as she kept on singing as part of the seventh-grade group. He, himself, returned to his front-row spot in the men’s ensemble at Baker church.

Yes, I can sing, too, but I am confined to “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Wisconsin varsity. Here’s to St. Charles High School and Buttercup.

Dear Abby: My 16-year-old perfect kid came to us, very adult-like, saying it was time for her to go on the pill. We knew she had a boyfriend, but didn’t realize it was this serious.

Despite my initial impulse to kill him and stick my daughter in a convent, we discussed it as a family and agreed she would see a gynecologist. She also had a long talk with her mother about sex, and with me a few days later. When I sat down alone with her she was embarrassed, but I don’t care – I’m her father.

Fast forward to last week: She left her iPad in the living room, and while I was using it, up popped explicit pictures of her not only with her boyfriend, but with other guys and girls. Her mother and I talked about how to handle this. I suggested therapy and pulling her from school. My wife disagreed. She accused me of violating our daughter’s personal property and said it’s none of my business.

I might be old-fashioned, but my daughter, whom I love more than life, needs to know this is not OK. She’s still a child despite looking like an adult, and as a child, she needs guidance. Am I wrong?

Women can’t drink as much as men Dear Dr. K: Can you explain why “moderate” drinking is defined differently for men and women? Is it because men tend to be heavier? Or is there more to it?

Dear Reader: Women are advised to drink less alcohol than men because they are much more vulnerable to alcohol’s harmful effects.

For example, research has found if a woman has more than one drink a day, she increases her risk of car accidents and other traumatic injuries. Her risk of high blood pressure, stroke, suicide and breast cancer goes up. And drinking more than one drink a day also increases the risk she will go on to abuse or become dependent on alcohol.

Women also tend to advance from their first drink to their first alcohol-related problem to the need for treatment more quickly than men.

Why are women more sensitive than men to the effects of alcohol? There are two main biological explanations. The first involves an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). ADH breaks down alcohol, first in the stomach and then in the liver. Women have considerably less ADH in their stomach linings than men.

That means more alcohol leaves their stomach and is absorbed into their blood.

As a result, one drink for a woman has about twice the effect as one for a man.

Second, pound for pound, a woman’s body contains less water and more fatty tissue than a man’s. Water dilutes alcohol in the blood; fat retains it. So alcohol remains at higher concentrations for longer periods of time in a woman’s body.

This exposes her brain and other organs to more alcohol.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Together, the increased absorption of alcohol into the blood plus lower total body water explains why women may become intoxicated more easily than men. These factors also suggest why women are more likely to suffer adverse consequences after drinking less and for fewer years than men.

Most health professionals recommend no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men. One standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

For pregnant women, as a report recently released by the American Academy of Pediatrics confirmed, no amount of alcohol is safe.

Although it generally is true women tolerate alcohol less well than men, I can say from my own experience there are plenty of exceptions to this “rule.” I’ve known women who could drink most men under the table. My guess is they inherited an unusually efficient ADH enzyme. As a result, they rapidly break down alcohol in their stomach, and less alcohol gets into the blood. With less alcohol in the blood, there’s less that travels to the brain.

And I’ve known some men who get pretty silly after the first few sips. Although in several cases, it would be more accurate to say they get sillier than usual.

When he is grounded, she takes away his driving privileges, and that means if she does let him out of the house, I have to do all the driving.

When we do go out on a date, it means he has to call her periodically to check in about where he is as if he is in grade school.

I think I should try to have a talk with her and find out if she is ever planning to cut the “apron strings” and give him some freedom. My parents were fairly strict, but his mother is going overboard. – Nameless,
