‘A bold agenda’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Gov. Bruce Rauner laid out a 2016 proposed $31.5 billion budget for Illinois on Wednesday, which one supporter called a “tough, but necessary plan” to address Illinois’ financial woes of a $1.6 billion deficit.

In giving his budget address, Rauner recalled President Abraham Lincoln in the lead-up to signing the Emancipation Proclamation. “ ‘The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. … We must think anew and act anew,’ ” Rauner said, quoting Lincoln’s message to his Kevin Burns congress.

“Here in the Land of Lincoln, we recognize that the road ahead – our road to a more p r o s p e r o u s Jim Oberweis future – is a difficult one,” Rauner said.

The state’s 2015-16 budget begins July 1.

“It is the budget that Illinois can afford,” From said.

“For years, we had budgets that spent money we didn’t have. ... We can only spend what we can and provide essential services, while not further burdening taxpayers in Illinois who are tapped out.”

Among the proposed cuts, Rauner’s budget would reduce the income tax that the state shares with local municipalities to 4 percent, from 8 percent. In Geneva, the loss would be $1 million, Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“Municipalities have been pick-pocketed by Springfield for years, and now the gover-

nor is recommending armed robbery,” Burns said.

Campton Hills Village President Patsy Smith said the village bases its budget on estimated shared revenue, as the village does not levy a property tax.

“We’ve always been committed to living within our means,” Smith said. “We’ll either find a new revenue source we’ve never used before, or cut services or take it from our reserves.”

St. Charles Finance Director Chris Minick said the city receives about $3.2 million through the state’s local government distribution. The governor’s proposal would reduce revenue by $1.6 million or a little less than 4 percent of its general budget.

“If it ends up passing through legislature, we would have to make it up through revenues or expenditure cuts or a combination of both those items,” Minick said.

The proposed state budget increases funding for early childhood education and would give $300 million more to general state aid for K-12 schools.

St. Charles District 303 Superintendent Donald Schlomann, who went to Springfield to hear Rauner, said the additional money – while welcome – does not keep up with inflation.

“It was sketchy on details,” Schlomann said. “But clearly from the standpoint of K-12 education, we’re probably hurt less than most other parts. It’s a shared-pain design. If there is one area that has less of the pain, it’s K-12.”

But Schlomann said he was interested in Rauner’s comments about reducing unfunded mandates – when lawmakers require schools and local governments to take action without providing funding.

“We in K-12 education are very interested … in local control of what communities want rather than have it dictated by the state,” Schlomann

said.

One example of an unfunded mandate is high schools being required to teach driver’s education when private schools could fill that need, he said.

Rauner’s proposal also reduces the state cost of Medicaid while maintaining eligibility levels for most lower-income state residents. It increases the number of jail guards to reduce the state’s cost of overtime.

The proposal reforms pensions, giving employees hired before 2011 a buyout option of a lump-sum payment and defined contribution plan in return for a voluntary reduction in cost-of-living adjustments.

“These [pension] reforms will yield more than $2 billion in savings in the first year alone,” Rauner said.

Other local reaction was largely supportive. In a statement, State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, praised the proposal as “a tough, but necessary plan to put the state’s fiscal house in order.”

“We have been presented with a budget that actually matches revenues and expenditures,” Oberweis stated.

“It reduces spending while funding public safety, education and essential care for our most vulnerable citizens.”

State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, stated in a news release that, “It was refreshing to hear that we’re starting the budgetary process grounded by the reality

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, called Rauner’s plan “a bold agenda.”

“Rauner has laid out a budget that increases funding to elementary and secondary education, as well as public safety, but still decreases overall spending from the 2015 fiscal year,” McConnaughay stated in a news release.

State Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva, stated in a release that Rauner’s proposals “were difficult to hear, but they represent an honest assessment and plan of action for what needs to happen if we are to turn things around in Illinois.”

In a statement, State Sen. Michael Noland, D-Elgin, noted he agreed with much of what Rauner said – and accepted the challenge to eliminate waste in government.

“But [Rauner] must, in turn, accept the need for revenue. This will help us to better meet the just demands of our people,” Noland stated.

In a news release, State Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, stated, “for the first time in over a decade, we got an honest assessment of the state’s budget challenges and a blueprint moving forward to overcome them.”

But critics found fault. Dan Montgomery, president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, stated in a news release

that the budget document itself contains numerous education cuts that Rauner did not mention in his address.

These include eliminating the After School Matters program, reducing the appropriation for group health insurance, reducing social service programs to families with autistic children and emergency food for low-income households, and eliminating the LIHEAP program that aids low-income families with energy costs, among others.

“These are all of the things Gov. Rauner would do before asking the richest 1 percent or corporations to pay a penny more,” Montgomery stated in the release. “Rather than address revenue in a responsible way, today Gov. Rauner recommended decimating public services for middle-class families in order to pay for massive tax breaks for the very wealthy.”

In a statement, Maryjane Wurth, president of the Illinois Hospital Association, objected to Rauner’s Medicaid proposal, saying a $1.5 billion cut “would take the state in the wrong direction and undo the groundbreaking progress being made to transform the Medicaid program and the state’s health care delivery system.”

Also according Wurth’s statement, cutting Medicaid would hurt the economy with the loss of more than 8,200 jobs and $1.1 billion in economic activity.

St. Charles man, 81, charged with criminal sexual abuse

Town house project gets green light in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A proposal to build 30 new town houses adjacent to Geneva’s historic district won final approval this week from the Geneva City Council in a series of votes.

Called Park Place, the project, proposed by Oak Creek Capital Partners, required an amendment to the city’s Downtown Station-Area Master Plan from single residential family to single family residential attached, officials said.

Some residents objected to the plan, both at the Committee of the Whole last week and at the council meeting.

The measure was approved after more than an hour of discussion.

“I applaud the civility which took place, [as] there were some disagreements,” Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“The reality is, the residents, the developer and the City Council gave this particular redevelopment a thorough vetting, thoughtful consideration, and ultimately decided the proper course of action by approving it,” Burns said.

“I believe the final product will benefit the entire community.

Aldermen voted, 9-0, to approve an amendment to the city’s master plan and to rezone the 2.16-acre property to allow town houses. Second Ward Alderman Don Cummings was absent.

The vote was 6-3 to allow

a special use, with 1st Ward Alderman Mike Bruno, 3rd Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra voting against it.

Aldermen voted, 8-1, regarding reduced cash contributions to the Geneva Park District and Geneva District 304, with Kilburg casting the lone “no” vote.

Burns also cast two votes to create ties, so two motions failed, one seeking to table the vote and the other to reject a revised town house plan without front porches.

Bruno said he voted against the special use because of the large mass the town houses would create directly abutting the historic district.

“Geneva’s calling card is our historic district,” Bruno said. “If I’d seen it [the town house development] in context, I might have voted for it.”

Bruno said the proposed size for the town houses was 2,600 square feet, much more than most downsizing families are looking for.

“Anyone looking to downsize is looking for something substantially smaller than that,” Bruno said. “I’ve got my fingers crossed that it’s going to be a quality project that will be executed well.”

SUGAR GROVE – Waubonsee Community College board trustees on Wednesday unanimously approved a $6 hike in tuition starting this fall to make up for an expected decrease in state funding.

Trustees approved increasing tuition to $110 per credit hour, up from $104 per credit hour. The $8 student fee will remain unchanged.

David Quillen, WCC’s executive vice president of finance and operations, noted the college’s tuition and fees will still be below what other community colleges charge. The state average for tuition for community colleges is $118.77 per credit hour, according to information provided by the college.

“We will still be cost effective,” Quillen told trustees.

Before the increase, the college’s tuition and fees were the third-lowest among communi-

ty colleges in Chicago’s collar counties, according to a chart provided by WCC. At $144 per credit hour, College of DuPage charges the most, according to the chart. WCC has had a guideline that called for operating costs to be divided into thirds, with the state picking up onethird, local property taxes picking up one-third and student tuition/fees picking up one-third, said Jim Sibley, WCC’s executive director of marketing and communications.

“With the state not being able to provide that one-third, it’s difficult moving forward,” Sibley has said. “The portion of the college’s revenue that’s received from the state has been steadily declining.”

The college’s tuition has steadily increased over the years. The college had charged $82 per credit hour in fiscal 2009. The latest hike occurred in the last year, when tuition/ fees went from $105 per credit hour to $112 per credit hour.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the eye disease that robs people of central vision and for which there is no cure; however, there is hope for slowing its progression. AMD involves the breakdown of the crucial central portion of the retina.

As a result, the disease makes it difficult for AMD sufferers to see fine detail and read printed material.

“Dry” macular degeneration is the more common, less destructive form of the disease. It occurs when deposits called “drusen” collect behind the retina.

Since dry macular degeneration can develop into the more serious “wet” form of the disease, it is important to see an ophthalmologist if your vision starts getting blurry or if you have trouble reading or recognizing faces.

P.S. Caucasians are more likely to develop drusen as well as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

BATAVIA – City officials continue to explore the idea of creating a tax increment financing district to improve the West Town area. City officials held a meeting in June to hear from residents and property owners in the city’s West Town area on their vision for the neighborhood, and to present the city’s possible plans for the area. The West Town area is centered at the intersection of Main Street and Mallory Avenue, and extends about two blocks north and south.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen, and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives. Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston told aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting that a comprehensive study of the subject area shows the area would qualify for a conservation area TIF designation.

Under that designation, at least 50 percent of the area’s buildings must be at least 35 years old.

“At least 46 of the 78 buildings, or 59 percent, are documented to be more than 35 years

old,” Aiston told aldermen.

Other factors exist within the area, Aiston said, including building and roadway deterioration, presence of buildings below minimum code standards and lack of community planning.

The area is comprised of industries still in operation and abandoned buildings, such as a vacant gas station. Master Cast, which supplies permanent mold aluminum castings, was at the southeast corner of Mallory Avenue and First Street.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – Multiple items were reported damaged this month at a Campton Township residence that was broken into, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report. Police responded to the 6N000 block of Swanberg Road on Feb. 12, the day the complainant found a front porch window shattered, according to the report.

The man last was at the residence Feb. 1, police reported, noting he had been working to clean up the home since the previous tenant moved out in December.

Damage also was discovered

inside the house. According to the report, a large cooking knife was stuck in a kitchen countertop, and, in the basement, the dryer exhaust tube was cut in half, and several light bulbs were shattered on the floor.

A storage shed on the property also sustained damage to a door, and a large wooden plank had been torn off, police reported. Items in the shed – a 1968 Ford, a 1972 Plymouth, a 1994 popup camper and a vehicle snowplow attachment – also were reported damaged.

When police asked the complainant whether there were any objects at the house that weren’t previously there, he pointed to several vodka bottles, according to the report.

He grew up in Aurora, and worked in the family pharmacy until his graduation from West Aurora High School. After high school, he entered the Army and served as a medical corpsman in occupied Italy right after WWII. Upon discharge, he entered the University of Illinois,

Geneva, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015, at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, from complications related to a motor vehicle accident that occurred January 31, 2015.

Born in Aurora, and raised in Wheaton, he was the youngest son of Donald C. and Elaine L. (Holstein) Ludy.

He was the owner/operator of Masterpiece Painting, Inc. since the 1980’s.

Chris graduated from Wheaton Central High School in 1976, and attended the University of Minnesota. He enjoyed cooking, golfing, fishing, skiing, and playing hockey with the Ice Holes hockey team. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and he was dearly loved by many longtime friends. He will be greatly missed.

Chris is survived by his wife of 24 years, Barbara A. (Dooley) Ludy; two children, Marissa and Ciana Ludy; 4 siblings, Donald (Linda) Ludy of West Chicago, Illinois, Emil (Pam) Ludy of Bloomington, Illinois, Lynne (Mead) Kirkpatrick of Issaquah, Washington, and Laurel Ludy (Everett Jones) of Enfield, New Hampshire; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Regania B. Larson Boyd nee Andrews, age 90, long time resident of Geneva, died Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at the Michealsen Health Care Center Batavia. She was born October 20, 1924 in Princeton. The daughter of the late Arvin M. and Florence I. Andrews.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Geneva where she attended Bible study classes there for many years.

She is survived by her two daughters, Victoria nee Larson (Jim) Butler of Geneva and Robin Wirt of Elgin. Her sister, Frances Terebessy of Geneva. Also her grandchildren, Elijah (Colleen) Clark, Sarah Butler, Jim Butler and great grandchildren, Bridget Clark and Devon Williams.

Also several Nieces and Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Larson in 1961 and Ralph Boyd in 1992. Also a brother, Otis L. Andrews.

Memorial Services will be held Friday, February 27, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. the Michealsen Health Care Center Batavia. There is no visitation. Burial will be private.

and graduated with a degree in pharmacy. Henry was a 3rd generation pharmacist. His mother’s father, Henry’s grandfather, started Grimm’s pharmacy in Aurora, in 1889. His father and older brother, Herbert were also pharmacists.

Henry was a great entrepreneur.

He was always looking for new business opportunities. With Herbert, they opened 3 more Grimm’s Pharmacies in the Fox Valley. The first was in the Valley Shopping center in St. Charles, which opened in 1957. Then came the store in Montgomery, in the Boulder Hill Center, which opened in 1963, and one more location by Mercy Hospital in Aurora. Henry used these businesses as a spring board to launch his many business adventures and hobbies. Some of which were: Photo Huts, Grimm’s Hallmark stores, Main Street Car Wash, and other real estate properties. Henry married Gloria Worrell in 1952, and moved to Oswego, in 1960. They had 4 children together.

Henry had many activities outside of the pharmacy. He enjoyed his summers at Kelly Lake, Wisconsin, at the family cottage with his family, mother, sister and brother. He bought a farm in Suring Wisconsin, close to the cottage and loved getting up there as much as possible, all year long, working with the pigs and cattle. He had a love of flying and got his private pilot’s license, he even had a landing strip put on the farm, so he could fly and land at the farm. Henry also loved giving back to the community. He was very active for many decades with the Rotary Club of Aurora (a past president), the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce and many local charities. Henry loved the St. Charles community!

Henry is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert E. and Margaret Funk; his brother, Herbert Funk; his sisters, Dorothy White, and Gloria Funk.

He is survived by his children, Kim Funk of Batavia, IL, Tom Funk of Montgomery, IL, Karen (Funk) McMahon of Dellwood, MN, and Bill Funk of St. Charles, IL; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service and celebration of Henry’s life will be held at New England Church on Galena Blvd. in Aurora, on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at 1:30 p.m.

The city has declared Feb. 22 Chester Gould Day in honor of a documentary airing on WTTW-Channel 11 that day about the late Chester Gould, who originated the world-renowned Dick Tracy comic strip.

The strip features a squarejawed, yellow-hatted police detective portrayed both on paper and in several films, including 1990’s “Dick Tracy” starring Warren Beatty.

Born in Pawnee, Oklahoma, Gould and his family moved to Woodstock in 1936 and settled on a farm east of town in what now is Bull Valley. Gould lived in town for 50 years until his death at age 84 in 1985 and is buried in Woodstock’s Oakland Cemetery, his gravestone etched with a likeness of Dick Tracy.

Intrigued and inspired by Gould’s accomplishments, Woodstock resident Tom Firak and his sons, Steve and John, began working on a documentary about him in 2007. Almost eight years later, that documentary has become “Chester Gould: An American Original.”

The show will air at 3 p.m.

My parents and grandparents could relate, too. It was kind of a bonding thing, with Dick Tracy running so long. ... I’ve been a Woodstockian for years.

I know Groundhog Days is a big thing around here, but Dick Tracy is a huge piece of history for this city and also for American culture, Americana.”

First distributed in 1931 by the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate, the strip appeared on the front page of the New York Daily News for 45 years. It’s the sixth oldest comic strip in America today.

GENEVA – Although an Elgin Community College student contracted the measles, no cases had been reported in Kane County as of Wednesday morning, a health department official said.

The Kane County Health Department Executive Director Barb Jeffers told the Public Health Committee that the ECC student is not considered a Kane County case because she lives in Cook County and is included in its count.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, the state had 14 confirmed measles cases as of Tuesday.

Nationwide, 141 cases were reported in 17 states and Washington, D.C., between Jan. 1 and Feb. 13, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Kane County Health Department provided measles vaccinations Friday and Tuesday to those at ECC who might have been exposed to the highly contagious respiratory dis-

ease, Jeffers said.

“We’re prepared,” she said, noting the county had to order adult vaccinations because it typically carries vaccinations for children.

On its website, ECC announced Tuesday that no new cases had been reported at the college, and the student with measles had been cleared to return to school.

Measles is highly contagious and causes a rash and a fever. It can be dangerous, especially for babies and young children, according to the health department.

Those who might have been exposed, are not immunized and are experiencing symptoms should call their doctor’s office, health clinic or emergency department before going there so staff can take precautions to help avoid further spread of the disease, according to the health department.

According to the agency, it is recommended that children get two doses of the measles vaccine, which is administered at 12 to 15 months and 4 to 6 years.

Not-so-random acts of kindness At my school, I’m a member of a program called A&E. Basically, it’s a group of students that has the opportunity to make our school a better place and go on cool field trips. However, our once-a-month meetings are spent doing what are known as “random acts of kindness.” In other words, we find unexpected ways to brighten someone’s day and bring a little joy to our school, which – like many places – can sometimes be overrun with negativity.

One month, we wrote notes to faculty members, thanking them for their hard work, and put them on the windshields of cars in the staff parking lot.

Another month, we attached candy to notes saying “Happy Thanksgiving” and taped them to various lockers around the school.

The leaders of A&E later told us that the amount of positive feedback they had received regarding our efforts was overwhelming. It made me feel amazing to hear that we were making such an impact on our school.

I’ve also heard stories of “random acts of kindness” on a larger scale. Take, for instance, people going through the Starbuck’s drive-thru, each paying for the order of the person in the car behind them. How about those who see homeless people in the streets of their city and provide them with blankets and meals?

Hearing stories of people spreading kindness, especially in unexpected ways, warms my heart. I feel that we live in a very negative, cruel world where it’s easier to be heartless and rude than thoughtful or compassionate. When people take the time to do something nice for someone, it can often have a ripple effect, causing more and more people to experience the fulfillment of kindness.

However, think how amazing our world would be if “random acts of kindness” weren’t so random. What if every day, people made a continuous effort

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel to be nice to others, always looking for an opportunity to do something thoughtful? What if instead of insults or put-downs, people used compliments instead? As someone who’s been a recipient of both random and not-so-random acts of kindness, I can say that such a world would be pretty awesome!

So, why not start today? It doesn’t have to be something huge. For high-schoolers, I’d suggest something as simple as sending a friend a text saying how much they mean to you.

Even better, tell them in person.

If you’re an adult, why not make your spouse’s favorite dinner after they’ve had a rough day or compliment a co-worker? These are all great places to start, but for more ideas, check out randomactsofkindness.org.

Sometimes people think one kind word or action won’t make all that much of a difference, and it prevents them from reaching out. But the thing is, I promise it will have an impact – if not on the recipient, then on you. My mom always says that kindness is its own reward, and I’ve definitely experienced it.

Doing something nice for someone else has a greater effect than people initially realize.

This month, I challenge all of you to try doing a random (or not-so-random) act of kindness.

You can start small, or – if you feel so led – go big. The intent is to spread happiness and thoughtfulness, no matter what the size of the gesture is. After all, if we all work together, I believe we are one step closer to making the world a better place.

Immigration policy in limbo THE WASHINGTON POST To think, as we do, that President Barack Obama overstepped his authority by shielding more than four million illegal immigrants from deportation, with no assent from Congress, does not mean that a federal judge should have license to invalidate the president’s order on the basis of tendentious logic.

Yet that’s the effect of a ruling Monday by U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen in Brownsville, Texas.

The judge, in issuing an injunction blocking the president’s order from taking effect, reached no conclusion on the constitutionality of Mr. Obama’s executive order.

Rather, Judge Hanen agreed with the states that their lawsuit cleared minimum procedural requirements and could go forward. He had to stretch so far to reach even that modest conclusion that we hope an appeals court will lift his stay while the case proceeds.

The judge made a persuasive argument that Mr. Obama’s action comes closer to rewriting law than to a conventional exercise in prosecutorial discre-

tion. But he was far less persuasive in arguing that Texas and 25 other Republican-led states likely are entitled to challenge the president’s order in court.

Shrugging off extensive precedent that establishes immigration law as squarely within federal authority, the judge based his finding mainly on the supposed financial harm the states would incur if they had to issue driver’s licenses to immigrants who might be newly entitled to them – an injury to Texas the judge vaguely estimated at “millions of dollars.”

Putting aside the slapdash guesswork involved at arriving at the dollar cost of issuing driver’s licenses to an unknown number of prospective applicants, the logic falls flat. By the judge’s reasoning, practically every immigration action by the federal government could be said to impose a cost of some sort on the states, and could therefore provide a basis for a lawsuit.

No doubt it is frustrating to opponents of Mr. Obama’s action to have no ready remedy. But frustration with possible presidential overreach cannot justify judicial overreach.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

EARLY LIGHT CAFE NOW OPEN YEAR-ROUND Business takes up winter residency inside of The Sugar Path in Geneva

Phillips owns Early Light Cafe, which had been open only during warm-weather months at the walk-up window at Mill Race Cyclery, 11 E. State St., Geneva. She opened the cafe in May 2013 and recently purchased Early Light Cafe from co-owner Eileen Kanute.

In November 2014, Early Light Cafe started sharing space with The Sugar Path, located at 315 W. State St. in Geneva, serving breakfast and lunch. The Sugar Path features desserts made from scratch.

“I was trying to figure out what I was going to do in the winter months,” Phillips said. “I thought maybe we could complement each other. I could bring them business, and they could bring me business.”

For Phillips, who has two teenage sons, cooking is one of her loves.

“I put myself through college cooking in restaurants,” she said. “I love making homemade soups and rolls every day.”

Phillips doesn’t sell her full menu at The Sugar Path, but does sell some of her most popular items, including her homemade soup with homemade roll, The Morning Ride egg sandwich, several different types of panini sandwiches and baked oatmeal that is gluten-free.

The cafe has been gaining fans in its temporary location, including Geneva

resident Julie Martin.

“You can tell the chicken pot pie is homemade,” Martin said.

Fellow Geneva resident Donelle Duvall said she thinks Early Light Cafe is “the best kept secret in Geneva.”

“Their rolls are to die for,” she said.

Michelle Adams, who owns The Sugar Path with her sister, Nina Cater, said the arrangement with Early Light Cafe has been good.

“A lot of our customers were asking for lunch items,” Adams said. “Dawn approached us at the right time. It’s the right pairing. Dawn fits right in with us.”

Adams and Cater also know what it is like not having a permanent space. Before opening The Sugar Path in its current space in December 2012, they were selling their products at farmers markets for more than a year.

“We are big supporters of local businesses,” Adams said. “We source local for a lot of our products.”

Phillips said she is grateful to be able to share space with The Sugar Path and hopes to expand on that relationship by selling pies from The Sugar Path when she reopens at the Mill Race Cyclery.

Depending on the weather, Phillips said Early Light Cafe plans to reopen at the cyclery towards the end of April.

Even after the weather warms up, the cafe will be open at both locations, she said.

Vicki Lawrence bringing ‘Mama’ to Paramount Theatre

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Best known for her character “Mama” from the long-running “The Carol Burnett Show,” Vicki Lawrence will perform in “Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show” on Sunday, Feb. 22, at The Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora.

The show starts at 3 p.m., and tickets cost $45, available at the Paramount Theatre’s website, www.paramountaurora.com.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Lawrence about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: Why do you still like playing the character Mama after all these years?

Vicki Lawrence: Well, it’s fun to keep her really topical. Because she’s a crazy old lady, she can get away with saying all the stuff I can’t.

I say she’s a crazy old lady, but I think there’s a large element of truth to what Mama has to say, most of the time.

If there’s something in the news that’s politically incorrect that I would never talk about, Mama always gets all the good jokes. It’s fun to keep her updated and topical.

Schelkopf: How much of you do you think is in the character?

Lawrence: Well, you know, Harvey Korman told me many years ago that any character that you do well is a part of you. Of course, I asked him how come

he was so good in drag, and he never answered me back.

I guess there is an element of her to me. You know, she’s a mother; she’s protective and judgmental of her family.

I guess as I get older, I think a little more like she does. You sort of earn the right to not waste time and say what you’re thinking when you get older.

Schelkopf: I understand that it was a role that originally was intended for Carol Burnett. How did the role get handed to you?

Lawrence: I actually tell the story in my show. My half of the show is largely autobiographical, and I think it’s been sort of comical, too, so I would like to think that it’s a funny half of the show.

Yeah, that character was written for Carol, and these two writers both came from dysfunctional families, so they wrote this beautiful homage to their crazy upbringings and lovingly intended the role for Carol. ... That role just didn’t speak to her. She said that she wanted to be Eunice, because that was the part that spoke to her. And then she suggested that maybe I should be Mama, which was just doubly upsetting to the writers.

Schelkopf: What did you try to bring to the character? What did you try to inject in the character?

Lawrence: Well, at the time, it was just another crazy old lady for me to play, because I feel like I did that a lot on Carol’s show. ... I had a Southern mother-in-law for a brief nanosecond, so I had her to draw on, and my own mother to draw on.

Schelkopf: I understand that Carol and Harvey kind of took you under their wing. What were the biggest things that you learned from them?

Lawrence: I think I probably learned how the business of show business should be run from Carol. I would say that’s the biggest thing I learned from her. From Harvey, I probably learned most everything I know about comedy.

He really was like having a private tutor.

I was so bad in the beginning. He used to say to me: “Forget stage right or stage left. You can’t even find the toilet.”

So, I think that being the team player that he was, he just decided he was going to make me a comedian.

Schelkopf: Was “The Carol Burnett Show” like lighting in a bottle? Can there be another show like it?

Lawrence: Well, first of all, it was a different time. Secondly, we did not try to be topical. So, I think that’s why it stood the test of time.

Same with “Mama’s Family.” It’s sort of timeless. A lot of comedy now is way too sexual, way too dark, way too cynical. You have to explain it to your kids.

Back in the good old days, you laughed for just no good reason, just at silliness. I think what’s why people remember it so fondly. It’s just a different time.

Schelkopf: You also scored a big hit with the song “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” Did that surprise you?

Lawrence: It did not surprise. I was the person, from the very beginning, who said it would be a huge hit.

She’s an individual. She is not a diagnosis,” Wuellner said. “I want everyone to understand how important it is for her to have the same life experiences and life opportunities that we all hope to have.”

There are innumerable nonprofits that help people with Down syndrome, but Wuellner said she selected LuMind, because “it gets [Mia] and others

the better chance at living a filling and independent life. ...

There are only two organizations, that I’m aware of, that support research.”

LuMind’s executive director, Carolyn Cronin, said she’s very pleased to have been chosen, noting that Glitter and Glue will “bring added awareness to the mission of the organization.”

Corrigan looks forward to mingling with readers at the event and said she hopes “the St. Charles crowd is ready to have a good time while doing a good thing.”

Marmion’s DeMoss looks to triumph Junior wrestler eyes IHSA title after injury woes dogged his first 2 seasons

kdruley@shawmedia.com AURORA – Riley DeMoss stands four victories shy of achieving his childhood wrestling goal of an IHSA state championship.

Should the 170-pound Marmion junior from St. Charles deliver on his dream at this weekend’s Class 3A state tournament in Champaign, he may have no choice but to anoint himself fully healed.

DeMoss (35-5) missed all but a few moments of his sophomore season with a torn hip labrum and still is thirsting to find his full potential after enduring rigorous rehab and winning regional and sectional titles.

“I mean, I’ve gotten most of it back, but I think I’m still not back to where I was,” DeMoss said. “I still have a lot of improving to do. I’m still knocking some rust off.

I’m not necessarily back to where I was before I got injured, but I’m getting there.”

If DeMoss’ postseason run is any indication, he’s not far off the trail. He rolled to a first-period fall in his opening bout of the 3A Batavia Regional, pinning East Aurora’s Julian Rios in 1:37.

After that, DeMoss outscored opponents, 21-7, in major decision and decision victories that clinched the second regional title of his career.

He earned his first of those as a 152-pound freshman, a postseason crown billed as the first of many to come after DeMoss entered high school as a decorated athlete ranked by USA Wrestling.

A trip to Champaign flashed heavily on his radar at the Shepard Sectional the following week, but DeMoss ultimately sustained a concussion during a consolation

“My freshman year, the beginning of the year was kind of tough just adjusting, but as I got into it, it got a lot easier,” DeMoss said. “I just got used to it, kind of transitioned from being a little kid wrestler to high school.”

Several Cadets starters can attest after spending their developmental years with DeMoss at “The Barn” of Campton Hills-based SCN Youth Wrestling.

Junior Nathan Traxler, who’s 37-2 at 182 pounds, doesn’t recall whether he began tangling with DeMoss in third or fourth grade, but he is certain it’s been a mutually beneficial relationship as they continue to serve as practice partners.

“It’s gone back and forth over the years,” Traxler said.

“One year, he might have been better than me. One year, I might have been better than him. And then one year, we might be dead even.

But that really helps, you know. … We just love getting each other better.”

DeMoss gripped any opportunity to improve especially firmly entering his junior season.

Primed to return to form a year earlier, he put himself through a rigorous offseason training regimen filled with conditioning, drills, bouts and anything else he thought might prepare him.

Shortly before the season began in November, though, DeMoss sustained a hip injury in the final stages of training. He was in the lineup during the Cadets’ season-opening tournament at Barrington, but aggra-

vated his injury early in the weekend.

“I just couldn’t push through it,” DeMoss said. “I wrestled, like, one match, and after that, that was it.”

DeMoss watched Marmion complete another solid season, highlighted by the fourth state title of his former “Barn” compatriot, Johnny Jimenez, who now competes at Wisconsin.

DeMoss followed his rehab diligently, even consulting a specialist, before resorting to the only protocol he knew once his junior season started.

“What I’ve seen out of Riley all year is a kid that couldn’t wait to be back on the mat, you know,” Cadets co-coach Ryan Cumbee said.

Rockets rally to beat Knights

BY TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com SYCAMORE – At the end of three quarters, the Kaneland girls basketball team had top-seeded Burlington Central right where the Knights wanted them.

Kaneland led by 10 points after playing some great team defense. But the Rockets were not just going to lay down in what could have been the last quarter of its season.

Burlington Central took over in the fourth quarter by increasing the pressure, forcing turnovers and knocking down shots. The Rockets’ final eight points came from the free throw line and they escaped with a 44-38 victory Wednesday in a Class 3A Sycamore Regional semifinal.

“They are a good team. They stepped up and made more plays in the fourth then we did,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “Our girls played hard the whole game. The effort was there the entire night and it came down to hitting a couple shots in the end.”

Kaneland (18-10) held tough for the first three quarters. Entering the second quarter with the score tied at 14, the Knights outscored the Rockets 20-10 over the next two quarters. In those 16 minutes, Kaneland forced the Rockets into some tough shots.

“I thought we had some good shots, but we shot the ball too quickly,” Rockets coach Mark Smith said. “We were just too impatient, and we didn’t make them play defense. They are a good defensive team and wellcoached.”

The Rockets took over in the fourth quarter and scored 10 of the first 14 points in the quarter to close the gap to four points.

After being fouled on a made lay-up, Shelby Holt hit the free throw to cut the lead to one.

Alison Colby, Aly DeTamble and Kayla Ross combined for seven points from the foul line to ice the game. The Rockets scored the final 10 points of the

game.

“We got to the free-throw line for sure,” Smith said. “We took the ball to the basket and got fouled. The 10-0 run is just that we got good shots and stole the ball and we defended pretty well.”

Outside of the result, Kaneland played a complete game.

Morgan Weber led the Knights with 11 points. Bailey Crimmins added nine points and pulled down six rebounds.

Camri Conley and Ally VanBogaert each finished with seven points. Vanessa Gould grabbed eight rebounds.

“We went in with the mentality to play as a team and no one needs to be a hero,” Crim-

mins said. “No one needs to go out and try to win the game for us. We kept our composure, played with the momentum and really hustled.”

Sam Pryor’s 15 points and six rebounds led Burlington Central. Colby scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Ross and Holt each had nine points.

“In the end, they just hit some shots,” Colombe said.

“We told our kids in there that we are proud of their effort. We were playing with them and we had the lead, but it wasn’t a lack of effort or intensity.”

Central will play Sycamore, which beat Hampshire, in the regional final Friday.

Aurora Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said no charges have materialized yet but investigators are “continuing to talk to people who may have knowledge of the case” and are reviewing video footage.

ST. CHARLES – Claire Jakaitis swooped through the paint and laid the ball off the glass, a recurring sight early in the nightcap of Wednesday’s Class 4A St. Charles North Regional girls basketball doubleheader.

Pumping his fist, Jakaitis’ coach, North’s Sean Masoncup, screamed, “ALL DAY!” Nearly one quarter passed before Masoncup returned to the phrase.

North endured a lengthy lull en route to routing Glenbard East, 53-20, in the night’s second semifinal. The victory helped North climb above .500 against Glenbard schools this season, but more importantly set up a rubber match with crosstown rival St. Charles East for the regional title at 7 p.m. Friday.

Postseason seedings are scheduled to be released today for 3A and 4A boys basketball teams, and around the Tri-Cities, the focus is the IHSA Class 4A Geneva Regional, which houses Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East, St. Charles North and DeKalb.

After Tuesday’s Geneva win at St. Charles North kept coach Phil Ralston’s squad atop the Upstate Eight Conference River Division, anything other than the Vikings (24-2, 11-1 UEC River) being the regional’s top seed would be a surprise.

Still, St. Charles East (20-3, 10-2) has a case. East and Geneva split their two headto-head meetings, and the high-scoring Saints’ nonconference schedule strength was tougher, especially factoring in East’s impressive thumping Tuesday over Evanston. East’s Thanksgiving tournament – where the Saints picked up one of their losses against powerhouse St. Joseph – is a substantial step up from Geneva’s Thanksgiving event in Crystal Lake.

On the flip side, Geneva is 2-0 against St. Charles North, whereas East lost its most recent meeting against the North Stars, and the Vikings’ 15-game winning streak since falling to Neuqua Valley at the East Aurora Holiday Tournament will be difficult to overlook.

The Vikings are undefeated this season playing with senior guard Pace Temple, who missed the 2014 portion of the schedule while mending from a knee injury.

“He gets better every game,” Ralston said. “He gets better every practice. If you kind of look at things, he’s really for most players with the number of games he has under his belt [this year], it would be like Christmas tournament time. He’s getting to where he’d be in midseason form as far as that goes.

“He continues to get better every game but I think kind of the silver lining to the way things have kind of worked out for us, we’ve been battling injuries – a number of players have missed games for one reason or another – and that has given other guys opportunity to step in and play.

We already had some depth to begin with and it’s allowed some of that depth to become better. Having missed Pace from November and December allowed some of the other guys, like Sean Chambers, to get more experience.”

The 3 through 5 seeds at the Geneva Regional seem clear-cut, with North likely to slot third, followed by DeKalb (4) and Batavia (5).

Rosary (11-17) played some of its best basketball in the opening quarter, zooming to a 19-6 lead behind hot shooting, especially from Taylor Drozdowski (4 for 4, nine points in quarter).

Drozdowski’s spinning layup in transition gave her team a 12-4 lead and prompted a Plano timeout.

Drozdowski led Rosary with 15 points while Winkel had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Drozdowski is rounding back into form after an injury-plagued season.

“I think she was out from like Dec. 8 to like Jan. 8,” Rosary coach Jessie Terrell said.

“She’s really just starting to get back into the flow of the game, so it’s huge for her confidence to build that and continue on through the tournament.”

Offense has not come easily for Rosary, but Terrell is hopeful Wednesday showed the Royals might be late-bloomers.

“We really have to start to put four quarters together, and this was the closest that we’ve came,” Terrell said. “I thought we played 3½ quarters of good basketball.”

The Reapers (11-18) made a trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter to nudge closer, drawing within 34-25 at halftime.

But the opening minutes of the third quarter spelled doom for Plano.

“We couldn’t stop their runs

AURORA – The cliche this time of year holds it doesn’t matter by how much teams win, just survive and advance, but Rosary forward Adrienne Winkel had a different take.

The Royals walloped Plano, 63-40, in Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A Rosary Regional semifinal, and Winkel thought the lopsided margin of victory mattered.

“We didn’t want to let them back in it at all,” Winkel said.

“It wasn’t enough just to beat them, we knew it had to be by a lot of points. … Just to carry over for our mentality for [Friday’s regional final].”

Rosary advances to face rival Aurora Central Catholic, which cruised to a 51-35 win against Sandwich in the first game of the doubleheader. ACC topped Rosary in the teams’ lone regular season meeting.

she has played so much soccer with Loras College They say you can’t teach speed. And although she’s not trying to learn speed, there’s no doubt Molly Stanfa is working to get faster.

The former Geneva soccer player playing at Loras College just wrapped up a freshman season in which speed was her main asset to the team. Stanfa made it to the field faster than she imagined, getting more and more playing time as the season went on. In her first season playing collegiate soccer, she admitted it was a bit of a surprise.

“That was one of the big things for me: I didn’t expect to play as much as I did,” Stanfa said. “I didn’t play as much in the beginning as I did toward the end, but it was a learning experience in adjusting to the way that college soccer is. So I was really happy with myself, and I was able to get better as a player and get up to the level that my coaches wanted of me.”

After getting on the field and getting a big dose of the collegiate game as a freshman, the big thing on Stanfa’s mind is helping her team improve from its 11-8 record and first-round ousting from the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

But she’s got more goals when it comes to how to do that. She said she needs to be faster, as it was the pace of play that she found was the biggest difference between her days at Geneva High School and her advancement to the NCAA. “I think one of the main differences is the speed of play,” she said. “In college, it’s a lot faster, just with everything in general. But with the pace of the game, you have to think quicker about what you want to do. You’re playing against girls who are very talented at that, and it’s something that you have to adjust to. So that and having to play against bigger girls and girls who are more built. I think that was a big difference for me from high school coming into college.”

So how does one get faster?

Stanfa said she’s getting better physically and improving mentally. Although her bevy of

“I still want to get faster, I really want to be at that highest level,” Stanfa said. “Some of the girls on our team are really fast, and I want to be up to their speed. And I want to be stronger, also, so I’ve been working out trying to fill out my muscle and my body so I can get to where I want to be, so I can keep playing against the girls that are older than me and not feel like I’m so much smaller than them.

“I think it’s a mental game for me, too. I can build my self-confidence while working out. And if I tell myself I can do it, I’ll be able to do it. But I think that I’ve just lacked that sometimes, and I think that I’m not able to do stuff or run as fast as I can. So I think that’s a big thing for me.”

Although she said college life took a little while to get used to (perhaps the one thing she hasn’t done speedily), life is going well now. The media studies major has an internship in the school’s athletic communications office, something she said she really enjoys doing.

“What I’m doing right now I really am enjoying,” Stanfa said. “I would hope to do something like this in the future.

I’m majoring in media studies, so like TV production, graphic design, all that. This has been really good for me, I’m really enjoying it.”

But when it comes to life on the field, it’s about getting better still. That’s what the offseason is for, and that’s what Stanfa is working toward.

Don’t make energy drinks a daily habit Dear Doctor K: I have two kids and a high pressure job. I’m always exhausted. Lately, I’ve been drinking an energy drink in the afternoon to get through the day. My husband thinks this is dangerous. Is he right?

Dear Reader: I’m sure many readers can relate to the mid-afternoon slump. It’s no wonder that energy drinks and shots have become the fastest-growing category in the beverage industry.

What gives energy drinks their jolt is good old-fashioned caffeine. It occurs naturally in coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate, and is added to energy drinks and some soft drinks. Caffeine is a stimulant. When you consume a food or drink that contains it, your brain cells fire messages more quickly, improving concentration and reaction time. The heart pumps blood faster and more forcefully, increasing your physical energy.

People who regularly consume caffeine develop a tolerance for it; they need to keep increasing their intake to get the same effect.

People can become so dependent on caffeine that they feel rundown when they don’t get enough.

Energy drinks can contain up to 242 milligrams (mg) of caffeine

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff per serving. In comparison, a 5- to 8-ounce cup of coffee contains roughly 100 mg of caffeine. A 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola has 50 mg.

Most energy drinks also contain lots of sugar. Together with the caffeine, this can lead to a jolt of energy and then a crash (just like eating a candy bar). Energy drinks also contain a mix of herbs and other substances that are marketed as “energy boosters,” though they haven’t actually been proven to increase energy.

Many people have reported negative reactions after consuming energy drinks, including heart palpitations, chest pain, high blood pressure, anxiety, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting and flushing.

Here’s the bottom line: If you need a quick surge of energy, it’s OK to have an occasional energy drink – no more than one a day.

But this shouldn’t be a daily or long-term practice. If you’re dragging, it’s far better to drink a single cup of coffee or tea.

Better yet, try these proven nutritional, exercise and lifestyle strategies to help you feel more energized: • Eat small meals and snacks every few hours rather than three large meals a day.

• Drink plenty of water.

• Exercise regularly.

• Get a good night’s sleep.

• Reduce stress with relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation.

As you’ve heard me say more than once in this column: Most food or drink that’s unhealthy when used regularly is OK to consume occasionally. That’s surely true of energy drinks.

Unfortunately, most of my patients who have turned to increasingly available energy drinks in recent years do not use them just occasionally. The drinks tend to become a crutch, a habit. If that’s happened with you, I’d strongly urge you to slowly scale back the number of energy drinks you consume each week, with a goal of getting below one a week.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and so is the guy I’m dating. My older sister is married and she and her husband have a 1-yearold daughter. I volunteer to babysit for free, mainly because I really love my little niece, and also because I know her parents don’t have a lot of extra money. They only go out about once every month or so.

I would like to have my boyfriend keep me company for an hour or two on the evenings I babysit because my niece goes to sleep early and then I’m by myself.

As a high school administrator, I was convinced that students’ grades were really intended for parents so that they could use them as a threat: “If you don’t get good grades, you can’t ... ” or to brag that, “My kid is on the honor roll.”

Being punished for having a B average puzzles and frustrates me.

I’ve taken courses where I was relieved to have received a C in a particular class. Few of us are gifted in all educational disciplines. Honor rolls are honors for those who earn them. They were not intended to be used negatively – to warrant punishment if not on the list.

You should have been praised by your parents for getting a B average, not punished.

Always do your very best in every class.

How does declarer take those tricks?

There is hardly a bridge deal that goes by without at least one finesse being attempted. Sometimes, though, how that finesse is approached can be key. In today’s deal, how should South play in three no-trump? West leads the heart five. East wins with his queen and returns the suit to dummy’s now-bare ace.

South’s two-no-trump rebid shows 18 or 19 high-card points (or a great 17 or poor 20) and is in principle game-forcing. The responder then has the three-level to investigate strains other than notrump and, perhaps, to start a slam investigation.

Since the lead has removed dummy’s only fast entry, South cannot use dummy’s diamonds.

Instead, he must hope to take one spade, one heart, three diamonds and four clubs. To get those club tricks, though, might require taking three club finesses. Declarer must stay in the dummy throughout. First, he must run the club nine. When that wins, he continues with the club queen. Then East has no defense.

Note, though, that if South starts with dummy’s club queen, East can defeat the contract by playing low to this trick. Then what does declarer do? If he follows suit with his club three, he must take the second club trick in his hand and cannot finesse for a third time. Or, if he unblocks his 10 or jack, then leads dummy’s nine, East can cover with his queen. East’s eight will beat declarer’s three on the fourth round of the suit.

In Wachtel’s apartment, though, it holds a decent amount of clothing and doubles as a stand for her TV. “You’d never know it wasn’t intended to be a dresser because it fits perfectly in my space,” she said. “I just had to get creative.”

Another trick Benton suggests is looking for vintage or secondhand pieces with a mid-century aesthetic, because they’re typically smaller-scale than furniture designed for newer homes.

“The homes of the ’50s were not the homes of today,” he said.

Wachtel suggests checking children’s sections of major retailers for pieces that are essentially smaller versions of a main-line piece.

PB Teen’s Chelsea Tower Dresser ($849, www.pbteen.com) is a “perfectly sophisticated,” small-footprint dresser that would fit nicely in most apartments, she said.

Dressers, which are often the catchall for socks, pajamas and off-duty garb, such as jeans and T-shirts, are just as important as closets.

Unfortunately, they’re also notoriously bulky, heavy and expensive, so folks who are squeezed into tiny apartments and condos may have a tough time finding a narrow, affordable piece.

David Benton, an architect with Rill Architects in Bethesda, Maryland, suggests to apartment dwellers, “think outside the box.”

“Really, it doesn’t even have to be an actual dresser,” Benton said. “It could be a sideboard if you want something low and wide or a chest that’s intended for a dining room.

Don’t feel like you have to shop in the bedroom department. It can be limiting.”

Benton knows what it’s like to live in cramped quarters.

Before moving to the Palisades neighborhood in Washington, he lived in a 230-square-foot studio downtown. It was a lesson in prioritizing, he said.

“Small spaces teach you how to

utilize every square inch.”

They also force you to get creative.

While it’s true that modern retailers such as West Elm and CB2 now offer handy items such as storage beds and stackable bins, dressers are typically still too large for rooms that barely fit the bed.

“What these spaces need is what people used to call a lingerie chest,” said interior designer Kelley Proxmire, referring to the tall, slim chests that were once popular for storing linen and women’s undergarments.

“They should resurrect those.”

Lingerie dressers are harder to find today, but some stores carry modern variations, such as Pier 1’s Ashworth Lingerie Chest ($500, www.pier1. com).

An alternative might be a bookshelf to stack shoes, or a taller nightstand with multiple drawers. “Even if it’s just where you keep your socks, it will help,” Benton says.

Jessica Parker Wachtel, an interior designer at GTM Architects in Bethesda, Maryland, said she stumbled into her own dresser conundrum when she was trying to find storage furniture for her 750-square-foot condo in Washington.
