Batavia siblings film scenes for ‘Chicago Fire,’ ‘Chicago P.D.’

BATAVIA – Two Batavia teenagers recently spent time filing scenes for the NBC dramas “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” as extras.

Alyssa Jacobsen, 16, and her brother, Evan, 13, helped film a scene with actor Jon Seda, who plays Detective Antonio Dawson in “Chicago P.D.” In the scene, Dawson is hosting a birthday party for his son, so the Jacobsens spent two and a half hours playing with Nerf guns as part of a Nerf war.

“It was kind of weird, but it was pretty fun,” said Evan Jacobsen, an eighth-grader at Geneva Middle School North. “The actor [who played Dawson’s son], he was really cool.”

The following day, Alyssa Jacobsen spent five and a half hours on the set of “Chicago Fire,” shooting footage with roughly 30 other teenagers as they left a school building. This time, instead of working with one actor, she met most of the cast. She even took a photo with Christian Stolte, who plays Randy “Mouch” McHolland.

“It was so cool,” said Alyssa Jacobsen. “My favorite part was getting to see the actors up close. It’s so different seeing them in person instead of on TV.” While the siblings won’t know whether they made it through final editing until the shows air next week, the experience was worth the long days in Chicago, they said.

“I hope I can see myself, but I think it’s more the experience that matters,” Alyssa Jacobsen said. “Just getting out to see everyone, that was what matters most. What are the odds [I’d do this two days in a row]?”

The siblings started watching the Chicago-based dramas this year with their mother, Kim Jacobsen, and immediately became fans. The two already had shown interest in firefighting, Kim Jacobsen said. Her 16-year-old daughter, a sophomore at Geneva High School, belongs to Explorer Post 1357 of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, a program that introduces teens to the fire service. Evan Jacobsen plans to join the post next year.

“Alyssa especially has really loved ‘Chicago Fire,’” the mom said. “She just really feels she can relate to the female firefighters.”

Several months ago, Alyssa Jacobsen began watching social media sites for casting calls for the shows. On Jan. 26, when she saw a call for extras for “Chicago P.D.,” she asked her mother for permission to apply.

“I felt OK with that,” Kim Jacobsen said. “She took selfies on her phone, downloaded them on the computer and sent everything in. Within half an hour, she got a call back from them. She was

just delighted, beside herself.”

The catch was that Alyssa Jacobsen had to be onsite at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios by 7 a.m. the next morning, and she had to allot between eight to 12 hours for the shoot.

Kim Jacobsen felt it was worth the time commitment and drove not only her daughter, but also her son, to Chicago. The casting crew was very nice and said Evan Jacobsen could help with the scene, Kim Jacobsen said – he just wouldn’t get paid the $80 his sister received for being cast as an extra.

On the drive home that day, Alyssa Jacobsen saw a casting call for “Chicago Fire,” applied and got a call back for the next morning. But two days was enough, Kim Jacobsen said.

“I told her to turn her phone off,” Kim Jacobsen said, laughing. “I can’t do another day.

“It was a wonderful learning experience for them, and I think that’s one of the reasons I encourage them to pursue things like this – you’re never going to know if you like something unless you try it,” Kim Jacobsen said. “You can always take something away from every experience you have.”

Anderson Road, drainage debated in Elburn Budget discussions underway in the village

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – In a budget presentation Tuesday, village officials went over topics such as safety improvements for Anderson Road, a new community service officer and plans for motor fuel tax funds.

Elburn’s budget process is beginning, and trustees heard some details at a Committee of the Whole meeting that followed the Elburn Village Board meeting. The process will continue through April, with more presentations set at future board meetings.

Doug Elder, the village’s finance director, stressed that work on the budget is a collaboration with department heads, and Elburn’s village administrator, public works director and building commissioner answered questions from trustees.

One topic that generated discus-

sion was the transportation fund.

It listed a plan to spend about $100,000, part of which would help pay for improvements on Anderson Road.

The road, which opened late last year, includes a bridge that goes over the Union Pacific tracks in town. Trustees said there are safety concerns to address.

The road is being maintained by Kane County in its first year, but Elburn will maintain it in the future.

Officials said the money would go toward a fence on the west side of the road, and they said costs would be shared with the county.

John Nevenhoven, the public works director, said the fence would help protect bicyclists and pedestrians.

While trustees were eager to address safety on Anderson Road, some wanted to think even bigger. They said residents have expressed con-

cerns, which some trustees share, that the bridge is steep and there are no guardrails.

Village Administrator Erin Willrett said that although fencing would be a cost-sharing project with the county, the guardrails would not.

Village President Dave Anderson said there could be some cost-effective solutions to address safety concerns, especially on the road’s east side, which is narrower than the west. He brought up the possibility of a wider embankment.

“Let’s do it in the most cost-effective way,” Anderson said.

In another discussion, Willrett brought up a plan to spend about $18,000 on a part-time community service officer. She said the officer would assist Tom Brennan, the building commissioner, with tasks such as code enforcement and working with Metra. The officer would be in uniform.

City officials express concerns for Batavia pedestrian crossings

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – City officials are concerned that the three specially designated pedestrian crosswalks along Route 31 have the makings of a tragedy.

Motorists are driving too fast, and pedestrians are too trusting that vehicles will stop for them on the busy fourlane roadway.

“The problem appears to be that nobody wants to slow down,” City Administrator Bill McGrath told aldermen at a committee meeting Tuesday. “It’s a nervous situation.”

McGrath said the city may need to seek a reduction of the speed limit on the highway, known locally as Batavia Avenue.

The three crosswalks – at McKee, Union and Morton streets – are designed to allow pedestrians to press a

button activating flashing lights ordering motorists to yield.

The city would have preferred a crossing at Houston instead of McKee, McGrath said, but the Illinois Department of Transportation will not allow such a crossing 600 feet or less from a traffic signal – in this case, the light at Wilson Street and Batavia Avenue.

Less than two weeks ago, three pedestrians at that intersection were injured when they were struck by a car, even though they were crossing with the light and had the right-of-way. The driver of the car was ticketed for failure to yield. However, the special pedestrian crossings are more worrisome, because motorists often are unwilling to make the unexpected stop, especially when they have a large truck in the rearview mirror, McGrath said.

“Those flashing crosswalks give people a false sense of security,” Stark said, adding that some people seem to have forgotten lessons that should have been learned as a child.

“You have to look both ways before you cross the street,” Stark said.

Fifth Ward Alderman Kevin Botterman, who lives near the Morton Street crossing, said stronger enforcement of the speed limit is needed.

The crosswalk in the first block of East Wilson Street, in the heart of the downtown, also is a worry, because pedestrians are emerging onto the roadway from between the parked cars that line the street, McGrath said.

There are two of the special pedestrian crossings on Route 25, but those have not created concern, McGrath said, apparently because the roadway is only two lanes and traffic is slower.

There also was a debate on motor fuel taxes. Nevenhoven said about $400,000 was planned for road repairs and patching. Anderson said the funds could be used to address stormwater drainage. He said improving the drainage could help roads last longer.

Trustee Jeff Walter said he agreed with Anderson, adding that there “is no sense in patching roads … when there is water running over them.”

Nevenhoven said if trustees wanted to address drainage issues, that could be done.

Starrett, Sullivan square off in Kane D-10 race

bschory@shawmedia.com In the March 15 Republican primary race for Kane County Board District 10, incumbent Susan Starrett of North Aurora is seeking a second term and Doug Sullivan of Batavia is challenging her.

“I am running again because I have had an overwhelming response from the people who live in my dis- Susan Starrett trict,” Starrett said.

Constituents have said they are pleased with the job she is doing to represent the district and how responsive she is to anyone who calls, Starrett said.

Starrett, who has a family business, said she promised never to vote to increase taxes and to work with board members on both sides to freeze the county’s portion of the tax levy, citing $16.4 million saved to taxpayers.

Sullivan, 39, currently president of the Batavia Public Library Board,

said he is challenging Starrett because he believes she has not represented the district properly.

“The reason I’m running is, I believe our District 10 has been under-represented for the last three years,” Sullivan said. “She has not been engaged in the representation of her constituents. In fact, she has had the worst attendance of any County Board member in the past three years Doug … in 2013 and 2014 she Sullivan was the worst, and in 2015 she tied for the worst.”

Sullivan said he would “represent the constituents properly” by being a full participant.

“Property taxes are a No. 1 issue I hear about from residents of District 10,” Sullivan said. “The current county administration has done a good job of keeping its portion of the levy frozen, and I’m certainly going to do my part to try to keep that levy as low as possible as long as possible.”

Sullivan said if he is elected, he

would also “lend a new voice to the budget battles between the County Board and county officials.”

For her part, Starrett said she had a baby eight months ago. That – and a difficult pregnancy – accounted for some of her absences, she said.

But Sullivan said these medical issues do not explain her absences in 2013 and 2014, which Starrett disputed.

“For 2013 … a bunch of people were below me” in attendance, Starrett said. “[Sullivan] has been told several times he was wrong.”

Starrett said the actual decision-making is done in committee, where her attendance rate is high.

When the issues go before the County Board, they are usually on the consent agenda, she said.

Starrett also fired back at Sullivan, saying he works for Pace in Arlington Heights, and questioned how he would be able to attend county meetings.

“I’ve already cleared with my employer to take vacation time to attend County Board meetings,” Sullivan said. “It’s a complete non-issue.”

On Wednesday, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner delivered the state budget address.

Since the summer, a budget stalemate in Springfield has persisted between Democratic lawmakers and Rauner, a Republican who is trying to leverage Democratic budget wishes with significant political and economic reforms.

Rauner’s full speech is available at www.illinois.gov. Here are some excerpts from the speech, as prepared for delivery: • “For more than two decades, we’ve had unsustainable unbalanced budgets, undisciplined spending, increased borrowing from retirees and vendors, rising taxes, inadequate infrastructure investment, massive manufacturing job losses, and stagnant family incomes. Dismal economic performance. The truth is, we haven’t had a truly balanced budget in Illinois for decades. In ways both obvious and hidden, we’ve overspent, and raised taxes to cover it.”

• “Twelve months ago, I proposed a budget with $6 billion in cuts, and it was quickly rejected by the Legislature. I offered to work together to find a compromise, but our reform propos-

als were ignored. Instead, Democratic legislators passed a spending plan that was more than $4 billion out-of-balance, and I had to veto it.”

• “Let’s stop wasting time by voting on spending bills you know must be vetoed – and then doing it again and again and again. The people of Illinois are sick and tired of this – they want us to work together, not watch another pointless cycle of votes and vetoes.”

• “Three weeks ago, during the State of the State address, I said I would support President [John] Cullerton’s pension plan as a first step toward major pension reform – and I urged this Legislature to pass it without delay.

President Cullerton’s pension reform can save taxpayers a billion dollars a year starting in fiscal 2018. Our administration lawyers met with Senate staff and made clear we will support whatever legislative language President Cullerton wants to use. Unfortunately, as of today, no bill has even been introduced. Now is the time to set politics aside and do what is right for taxpayers. No more delays. No more stalling.”

The city of St. Charles will celebrate the local dining scene during its annual St. Charles Restaurant Week, which begins Monday and runs through Friday.

Mayor Ray Rogina said he looks forward to Restaurant Week every year.

Dance studio marks 20 years in St. Charles If you go

“Through dance, we teach them there is more in this world,” she said.

Williams, who also serves as artistic director, opened the studio 20 years ago in a building previously used by the Free Methodist Church at 101 S. Third St. in downtown St. Charles.

In honor of its anniversary, the studio’s theme this year is “20 Years of Magic and Dance.” Manager Felicia Lara said it is an exciting time for students to be involved with 3rd Street Dance.

Elburn • Police responded to the 300 block of East Reader Street, Elburn, about 11:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, for a reported burglary in progress involving four teens. Witnesses reportedly saw the teens enter or try to enter vehicles.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles woman faces criminal charges over accusations she stole money from unattended purses at a mother-son event sponsored by the St. Charles Park District, police said.

Jessica Elizabeth Arnold, 38, of the 1800 block of South Fourth Jessica P l a c e , h a s b e e n Arnold charged with three counts of misdemeanor theft.

St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said she was found going through another woman’s purse during the Mom and Son Date Night at the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., St. Charles.

The Feb. 5 event was advertised as a night of activities, entertainment and dancing for those ages 3 and older.

St. Charles Park District security determined Arnold went through 16 purses, Kintz said, noting that she only took cash.

Arnold, who initially denied the accusations when confronted, threw money into a garbage can in an attempt to distance herself from the incidents, Kintz said.

Authorities recovered $233, Kintz said. He said the money, which is considered evidence, eventually will be returned to its owners.

Because two other victims were identified after Arnold was first charged, Kintz said she may face additional charges.

He indicated Tuesday that those cases remained active.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Poi, his daughter, Roxanne Russ, his sons, Mark Poi and Warren (Roz) Poi, four granddaughters and two great-granddaughters, step-daughters, Marla (Lewis) Kreager, Gina Baley (Cary Kerger) stepson, Brian (Stacy) Baley, five step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

Just this past week, my THE WRITE friends and I got into one of PLACE our usual animated conversations at the lunch table. The Emma topic this time was Hallmark Chrusciel movies (I still have no idea how we got on the topic, but then again, do I ever?). My friend and I declared our love for Hallmark movies and everything that makes them wonderful: the sappy romance, the predictable endings and the simple yet satisfying plots. Another friend, however, felt that these movies were too cheesy and an inaccurate representation of life.

Things just don’t work out the way they do in Hallmark movies, she told us. Not everyone gets a happy ending.

I’ll admit, I’ve always been a fan of movies and books with a stereotypical “happy ending.” From Disney movies to the Harry Potter series, I can’t get enough of happily ever after.

Who doesn’t love to see the glass slipper fitting Cinderella or Harry defeating Voldemort once and for all? Given the success of these films and books, I’d hazard a guess that most of the world shares my sentiment.

There’s a certain security and hope that comes with a happy ending, and perhaps that’s why people crave them so much. We all yearn to see the villain vanquished, true love found and every problem resolved. It takes away the tension of conflict throughout the story because we know that – in the end – everything will work out. Similarly, it gives us hope that maybe our own issues will get fixed as easily as they are in the movies. By exposing ourselves to happy endings in fictional stories, we’re able to escape from our own difficulties, if only for a little while.

The lure that happy endings provide is definitely a strong one, and I’ve been reeled in many times. Who could resist the promise of a happily ever after or the idea that we’ll find our own fairytale ending someday? To think otherwise seems pessimistic and way too negative.

However, those who can’t stomach the excessive, predictable happiness of Hallmark movies do have a point. Oftentimes, life doesn’t work out the way it does in movies. The “villains” of our lives take over and overwhelm us with fear and powerlessness. True love can fall apart and seem unattainable. Family members get sick; money can be tight; and goals can seem like they will never be reached. As much as we want them to our problems can’t always be fixed with a wave of a magic wand.

However, that doesn’t mean a happy ending is impossible to obtain. And maybe some of that comes with redefining what happily ever after truly means. Perhaps it’s not resolving every problem and getting whatever you desire. What if it’s simply being content with what you have, even though it may be far from perfect? A happy ending could be right in front of you, if you’re looking for it in the right place.

My life may never end like a fairytale, no matter how much I want it to. But you know what ... that’s OK. I have a different kind of happily ever after in mind: the kind that comes from contentment and realizing I don’t have to have everything figured out. And, really, that’s the only happy ending I need.

How Roberts can honor Scalia’s legacy BLOOMBERG VIEW The sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia has given Chief Justice John Roberts a unique opportunity to affirm the Supreme Court’s rightful place in American politics: keeping the law above politics.

He should seize it, even though – and especially because – the high court has a tenuous hold on that place.

Within hours of Scalia’s death, Republican leaders in the Senate announced that they would not consider confirming his replacement until after the 2016 election. Never before has the Senate attempted to put off an appointment for so long, nor has the court’s balance of power been thrust so forcefully into the middle of a presidential campaign.

Perhaps the Republicans’ gambit will have the effect of galvanizing voters in both parties. It could also further damage the integrity of an

institution that has become as polarized as the electoral system it is shielded from. A presidential campaign that doubles as an election to replace Scalia would position the court as an extension of the parties more directly than ever before.

That may well be unavoidable. But Roberts can mitigate some of the damage to the court by taking a modest step: reminding the Senate that an election year does not absolve it from its constitutional duties. Senators may ultimately reject the president’s nominee, but he or she should get a fair and public hearing.

It would not be the first time that Roberts decried politics intruding on the appointment process. “A persistent problem has developed in the process of filling judicial vacancies,” Roberts wrote in 2010. “Each political party has found it easy to turn on a dime from decrying to defending the blocking of judicial

nominations, depending on their changing political fortunes. This has created acute difficulties for some judicial districts.”

Now that same problem has created difficulties for the Supreme Court itself.

In his own 2005 confirmation hearing, Roberts likened his role as a judge to an umpire who calls balls and strikes. Umpires also can (contrary to popular belief) call a delay of game violation, and occasionally even break up on-field conferences aimed at buying warm-up time for relief pitchers.

Roberts has no authority to force the Senate into action, of course. But he is free to tell them to get on with it – to basically trot out to the pitcher’s mound and tell the players to stop dawdling and do what the people expect them to do. They don’t have to listen to him, but they certainly should respect his commitment to fair play.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

They had opened Limestone Coffee and Tea in Batavia, but when the lease ran out after five years, Maureen Mares thought they would call it quits.

But after support rolled in from the Batavia community and Batavia Enterprises Inc., enough money was raised to keep Limestone Coffee and Tea in business.

“The community wanted us here,” Maureen Mares said. “Everyone has been extremely supportive of a mom-and-pop shop like we have. Because of the generosity of the community and everyone involved, we were able to keep going.”

Wine detectives planning ‘major tasting event’ It’s the Year of the Monkey in China. And, during the Chinese new rear, which started Feb. 8, most everyone is on holiday vacationing or spending extra time with family and friends.

So, very little business gets done.

But, the wine detectives are on the job, ferreting opportunities. In fact, we are planning a major tasting event for March or April.

We are inviting our Chinese distributor from Shenzhen and our Hong Kong distributor to a major tasting event at the new Centre de Vin in Hong Kong. We’ll taste seven wines accompanied by appetizers and make a major presentation on premium California wines.

We’ll emphasize climate, appellations, vineyards, the harvest and winemaking techniques. And we’ll probably have a contest to determine who can identify cabernet, chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir, etc.

The goal, of course, is to introduce premium California wine to the local consumers and explain how it compares in quality and style to the French wines they have historically preferred in Hong Kong. After all, the more they know about California wines,

John White, my fellow Wine Detective, and I will probably do a day or two of sightseeing while in Hong Kong. The last time we were there, we took a tram to Victoria Peak, which is the highest point on Hong Kong Island, and looked down on all the skyscrapers and tall buildings. That’s me in the photo, looking over the edge, observing the impressive vista while trying to keep my hat from blowing off in the stiff wind.

By the way, just as a point of interest, Hong Kong is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, with millions of international visitors in 2015.

ccasey@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – All week long Kaneland girls basketball coach told his team not to overlook Wheaton Academy in its Class 3A Burlington Central semifinal Wednesday night.

With a possible matchup with host Burlington Central on the horizon, the Knights came out and did just the opposite of what Colombe asked. Luckily, they had halftime to regroup.

Kaneland came out and locked down defensively to end Wheaton Academy’s season, 50-43, and advance to the regional final Friday night to set up that matchup with the Rockets.

“I kept saying it all week, do not overlook them,” Colombe said. “We definitely did that in the first half. I really think we did. They’re a good team, and we kept saying we have to beat this team to have the chance to play (Burlington Central). Hats off to them for getting our attention in the first half, but we woke up and played better in the second half.”

Senior point guard Camri Conley led the charge on both sides of the ball for Kaneland (23-4) Wednesday night. She created several turnovers by Wheaton Academy (17-10) and led the Knights, offensively, with 15 points.

Conley said she thought her team’s defense in the second half was a testament to wanting to keep their season alive, regardless of who the contest was against.

“I think at halftime we realized that if we didn’t win this game, nothing else mattered,” Conley said. “Coach Colombe told us at half, like, ‘Let’s go.’

We couldn’t have this be our last game tonight and we did what we had to to advance.

“On Friday, we’ll have to start from the opening tip like we started the second half. We know (Burlington Central) is a very good team, with good shooters, so we’ll have to play much better.”

After Wheaton Academy’s Jamie Netzley – a St. Charles native who finished with 10 points – helped the Warriors develop a five-point lead heading to halftime, the Knights came out of the locker room and made their statement.

Vanessa Gould and Bailey Crimmins each had two buckets to start the third quarter and helped Kaneland tie the score at 29 after three quarters.

The Knights then scored 10 of the game’s next 12 points – on baskets by Conley, Gould, Crimmins and Meg Cohrs – to put the game at a place where Wheaton Academy was never fully able to recover.

Both teams – Kaneland and Burlington Central – will come into the Friday’s regional final with a 23-4 record.

For Colombe, he’ll certainly take the win. There’s no denying that fact, but also jumped on board with Conley’s thoughts on being much better come Friday.

Pryor, Rockets rout Hubs in regional semifinal Senior forward hits 7 3s as part of game-high 24 points

Burlington Central had everything go its way from the opening tipoff to the final buzzer as the Rockets cruised past Rochelle, 71-37, on Wednesday night at the IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional semifinal.

Despite a large advantage in all aspects of the game coming in, Burlington Central coach Mark Smith was not taking any team for granted.

“I thought we played very well tonight,” Smith said. “The thought the first six girls really gave a nice effort tonight. I’m not sure we necessarily overlooked anyone last year, but that’s over and done with and we’re looking forward to playing for another regional championship Friday night. We’ll be ready to go.”

After a fourth-place finish in the Class 3A state tournament in the 201314 season, a loss in the regional championship game to Sycamore last season left a sour taste in the mouths of many of the returning Rockets players.

Needless to say, not only will they not be overlooking any opponents this time around, but they certainly have not forgotten what happened a year ago.

“I think we came out in this first game a lot more focused than last year,” senior forward Sam Pryor said.

“Last year, we had these high expectations, and we got nervous. We definitely still have those high expectations, but we just focused on this game and winning tonight.”

Pryor led Burlington Central (23-4) by knocking down seven 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 24 points.

Those top six girls that Smith talked about contributing included Pryor, but seniors Shelby Holt (21 points), Kayla Ross (12) and Rebecca Gerke (eight) rounded out the scoring for the Rockets.

It was all BC from the beginning against the No. 9-seeded Rochelle (429). Smith expected his team to come out strong, and he got his wish.

The Rockets scored the first seven points and took a large, 25-4 advantage into the second quarter.

That 23-point lead jumped to 29 at halftime as Pryor knocked down five of her seven 3-pointers before the break.

“My teammates just got me the ball,” Pryor said. “I had the easy job.

Pryor got most of the shots she wanted Wednesday night, and her coach knows it won t be that easy when playing for a regional title.

“We’ll have to game plan for whoever we get,” Smith said. “We’ll need other girls to step up if they try and focus on shutting down Sam or Shelby. We expect to see different defenses as we go through the playoffs and know teams may try and make other players beat us. Maybe a Box-and-1, or some zone, but either way, we will be ready.”

With the win, Burlington Central remained unbeaten against Class 3A opponents this year, as all four losses this season have come to Class 4A schools.

That bodes awfully well for the Class 3A state tournament should that trend continue into March.

The result meant Crowe will represent the Vikings downstate at what has been a successful weight class for the program.

“I’m just glad I could be that one guy that kind of puts Geneva on the map down there,” Crowe said.

Crowe’s strategy against Nudera ran counter to a different approach that his guided him through much of the season, channeling his athleticism and lithe build.

“This year, I kind of changed my style to be aggressive, use my strength,” Crowe said. “It’s showed that it’s worked.”

Saints falter in second half against Tigers

editorial@kcchronicle.com BARTLETT – Leading by 35-33 midway through the third quarter, the No. 12-seeded St. Charles East girls basketball team was in good shape as an underdog against the No. 5 seed, Wheaton Warrenville South.

Things went downhill quickly for the Saints, however, as a 16-0 run in the second half pushed the Tigers past the Saints, 59-42, on Wednesday in the Class 4A Bartlett Regional semifinal.

East (14-16) wasn’t able to stem the tide as Wheaton Warrenville South (189) and its methodical offense kept producing good shots, while Saints shooters went cold in the second half. South ended the game on a 26-7 run.

“In the second half, we got cold, and I thought we were settling too much,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “We took a lot of 3s, a lot more than we normally do. When you do that, you get one look at the basket and they’re a very disciplined team so we weren’t getting any offensive boards.”

Seniors Hannah Vitkus and Kelly Rinker led East with 17 points apiece, although they received little help from teammates. Rinker was hot from behind the arc in the first half – she hit a trio of triples in the opening half as Vitkus and Rinker combined for 24 of East’s 26 points in the first half.

However, All-Upstate Eight Conference River Division team members Sara Rosenfeldt and Sam Munroe were quiet as they were held to four and two points, respectively.

“We knew they were good shooters, but we also knew we couldn’t allow a bad matchup inside,” Wheaton Warrenville South coach Rob Kroehnke said. “I said (at halftime), if we scored 25 points again, I thought we’d be fine. We just couldn’t give up 25 again and our defense was absolutely fantastic in the second half.”

Wheaton Warrenville South had a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring at least nine points, led by Jayla Johnson’s 14 to go with nine rebounds. Its starting backcourt of freshmen Mira Emma and Mackenzie Stebbins contributed with a combined 26 points and eight rebounds.

halftime. But those looks dried up after halftime as the Saints were held to 2 of 13 from behind the line in the second half, settling for jumpers rather than attacking the middle of Tigers’ 2-3 zone.

Drumtra lamented the number of 3s taken, combined with the Saints only getting to the free-throw line three times the entire game.

“They basically said, ‘You can have the 3,’ and we took it. But that’s a lot of 3s,” Drumtra said. “Of course when you’re chasing, you try for the 3 to catch up, but it just kind of got away from them.”

This was the second meeting between the two teams this season, as East dropped the first, 44-34, on Nov. 27.

“They fought to the end, and I’m very proud of that,” Drumtra said. “I just thought our shots weren’t going in in the second half, then we started to get a little tight as they got the lead.”

Dear Abby: At least “Renee In Oregon” (Sept. 10), who asked her adult daughters for their friends’ phone numbers, cares enough to want someone to call if her adult children don’t respond. I didn’t regard her request as nosy or overbearing, simply so she’d have a “just in case” number.

Renee’s daughters sound like ungrateful brats who don’t care anything about worrying their parents.

I’m thankful my four adult children will text me in response to my calls to let me know they are OK. I have never had a problem getting a contact number from them for a neighbor or friend. Two of them offered the information without my asking.

I have had to call a contact only once. Thank goodness it was only a matter of a stolen phone, not a sick or injured child. I’m blessed my kids understand it’s not to get in their business, but a logical safety issue. –

• There is an ongoing wave of market consolidation within the pharmaceutical industry. When two companies make a generic drug and one company acquires the other, you now have only one company selling the drug.

• Another reason competition can temporarily decrease is when two companies make a generic drug and one of them has manufacturing problems that force it to temporarily stop production. When one company stopped production of generic doxycycline in 2011, the price of the drug suddenly rose 6,000 percent.

Would “greedy” be an appropriate adjective?

What to do? First, when your doctor recommends a drug for you, ask about its cost. In certain situations, an alternative (lower price) drug that has a similar mechanism of action might be safe and effective. Websites such as www.goodrx.com offer online tools to compare the price of medications in your area. Drug coupon or discount programs also might help.

Finally, contact your local elected representatives. Letting them know how drug prices are affecting you can help keep this issue a political priority.

Dear Dr. K: A generic drug I’ve been taking for years suddenly became much more expensive. I can’t afford the new price. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Prices of generic versions of some commonly prescribed drugs have been skyrocketing. Like you, many of my patients have been affected.

I spoke to Dr. Ameet Sarpatwari, an instructor at Harvard Medical School and an epidemiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He noted, fortunately, the price of most generic drugs remained constant between 2008 and 2015. However, almost 400 generic drugs saw whopping price increases of more than 1,000 percent.

Why are some generic drugs so expensive?

It’s not for the same reason some new drugs are very expensive. With new drugs, the pharmaceutical company has had to spend a great deal of money to develop a drug that didn’t exist before. So there is a rationale for the high price.

But a generic drug was developed long ago, typically by another company and at that company’s expense. So what other reasons might explain the remarkable rise in the price of some generic drugs?

One good reason is it can be difficult and expensive for a manufacturer to get a generic drug to market. In 2014, it took the Food and Drug Administration an average of 42 months to process a generic drug application. Compare that to an average of eight months for a standard new drug application.

Then, there are several bad reasons: • The market for some generic drugs is so small just one company makes a drug.

My husband and I both love children and plan to have three – that’s our limit. It just so happens we want them close together so they can do things together when they’re older. My brother is three years older than I, and we had very little in common.

I’m very upset with my mom’s attitude. The number of children my husband and I have and when we have them is nobody’s business but our own. My husband thinks we should tell my mom our plans and reasoning, in order to convince her we’re not obscene. I think I should tell her to mind her own business and we want eight kids.

But I also agree with your husband you should be straight with your mother about your plans, rather than react to her comment with anger and sarcasm. A grandmother who loves her grandchild – and also is a great baby sitter – deserves a second chance to be genuinely a part of your life.

Dr. Wallace: My dad is a beer drinker on the weekends. He spends almost every weekend watching sports on television and drinking beer. He is a good father who works hard in the steel mill, and he supports our family in style. I have a 15-yearold brother who gets into a lot of trouble at home and at school.

For the past few months, I have seen him swipe beer from

my dad’s stash, and he drinks them, too. Lately, I’ve been spying on him. He steals one or two cans a day and he drinks them.

He then places the empty cans in a brown paper sack and dumps them in a neighbor’s garbage can.

I confronted him, and he begged me not to “squeal” on him and said he would stop stealing and drinking the beer. Well, he still steals and drinks. I hate to be known as a squealer, but I’m going to tell our parents.

Is it possible my brother could actually already be addicted to beer? I think he is too young, but I’m not sure. I’ve never seen my brother drunk. – Nameless,

There are so many variations on themes -- this deal, for example.

Yesterday, I discussed the right play for J-9-6-4 opposite A-Q-10-7. In isolation, taking the finesse is correct.

In theory, it will win 50 percent of the time. A priori, the king will be singleton offside a little under one time in 33. But in yesterday’s deal, taking the finesse was wrong, because the king was known to be offside from the bidding. That does not apply here, but why is it an error for South to take the spade finesse in three notrump after West leads a fourth-highest heart seven to East’s queen and declarer’s king?

If North had used Stayman, South would have been in four spades, a contract that would have normally required either the spade finesse to work or a good heart guess (or heart lead from West).

In three no-trump, South has seven top tricks: one spade, one heart (trick one), three diamonds and two clubs. He will obviously play on spades for the extra winners, and if that finesse is working, he can gain an overtrick. However, if it loses and West led from a five- or six-card suit, the contract will fail. Declarer should fight to keep East off the lead. He should start with the spade jack, to encourage a cover by West, but then rise with dummy’s ace. If the king drops, great; if the royal does not appear, South leads another spade and hopes for the best.

The Washington Post Imagine the coziest spot to watch the big game: a cushy long sofa, a table full of snacks, a bar stocked with craft beers, a giant TV and a crackling fireplace with real wood burning, providing a woodsy scent and a warm glow.

“When people imagine their dream family room, they think of a fireplace being a major part of it, said Anthony “Ankie” Barnes, a partner in Barnes Vanze Architects in Washington. “It’s a gathering and centering visual element.”

Fireplaces are an essential part of many American homes. They serve as a backdrop for family holiday photos; their mantels are an altar for treasured talismans. In new construction in 2014, 51 percent of single-family houses had one or more fireplaces, according to the census.

Wood-burning or gas? That’s the hot question.

“Homeowners are divided into two camps. Those that like to make real fires and those who just like to turn on the gas,” Barnes said.

Romance can be a factor. “A wood-burning fireplace can be looked at as a romantic novelty, right as it sucks the heat up the chimney,” said Jim Rill of Rill Architects in Bethesda, Md. “But a nice big warm fire has a good ambiance to it and is much more attractive than a gas fireplace.”

For Washington designer Mary Douglas Drysdale, fireplaces have a lot of style importance; seating is often built around them, and they become the focal point of a room. But wood-burning fireplaces bring back warm memories of childhood.

“There’s a lot of emotion around fireplaces,” Drysdale said. “I learned how to make a fire as a child, and we used to sit around it and drink hot cocoa and tell stories. Even today, I enjoy the ritual of making the fire; you don’t just flip on a switch like a TV. The art of building a fire is more like writing.

It’s slower and more thoughtful.”

Erica Burns, a Bethesda, Md., designer, said she has seen an increasing interest in old-fashioned, wood-burning fireplaces.

“Gas fireplaces seemed to have been big over the last 10 or 20 years. But the crackle, the smell, of burning real wood reminds people of what they had growing up,” Burns said. “A fireplace from 100 years ago still looks great; it’s a classic.

Yes, it’s more work. But it’s sort of like fresh flowers. The real thing is worth it. “

making a real fire is too much work or too messy, I’m one of those people who thinks if you’re lucky enough to have a real indoor fireplace, you should use it as it was intended.

Learning how to build a fire, stacking logs and foraging for kindling was part of my upbringing in New England. During Washington’s recent Snowzilla, we had stockpiled enough wood to have fires every wintry day, which made our 1937 house seem cozy, safe and extra warm.

I’ve watched as a number of friends lost interest in buying cords of wood and hauling it all in. Some have let their fireplace sit idle, filling it with candles (the dreaded “firelabra”), plants or a studied display of birch logs. Others have switched to gas, citing the ease factor and concerns about air pollutants or allergies.

For me, gas fires are like fake plants or fake fruit. They are fake.

Architects and designers say most clients are set on having a fireplace, but they aren’t always willing to put in the work, between cleaning out the ashes and having the chimney regularly inspected.

“It seems that most people want to believe they want wood-burning fireplaces, but they invariably default to gas when they realize how little the wood-burning fireplace would be used and how much work it is to build a fire,” Washington architect Christian Zapatka wrote in an email. “A number

Nothing is more frustrating than opening a door only to have it slam into another door that was left ajar. Where there are too many doors opening into an area or just a need for precious space, pocket doors make sense. In addition to saving space, pocket doors allow for easier placement of furniture and avoid the inadvertent crash of doors.

Throughout the past few years, we have seen a boom in both significant home renovations and new construction. It is an exciting time as homeowners, interior designers and builders are incorporating thoughtful design details into their projects.

Some are functional or aesthetic.

Others are a bit of both. Since we have the unique vantage point of seeing lots of homes and working with many sellers/buyers, we thought we’d share with you 10 of our favorites.

3. Attic HVAC unit

Most attic A/C air handlers we see are located in an unconditioned area.

We are starting to see “green” homes in which the attic unit is built in a “conditioned” room. In other words, the A/C unit cools itself – making it run far more efficiently and extending the life of the unit. Very cool.

1. Kitchen cabinetry

Let’s face it, you can’t have too much storage in a kitchen. Kitchen cabinetry that goes all the way to the ceiling makes use of all the vertical space.

Besides, when cabinets stop short of the ceiling, the tops just collect dust.

We like to see good quality cabinetry that include “soft close” (aka self close) features on the drawers and dovetail joints. Also, inset cabinets (as opposed to overlay) require a higher level of craftsmanship and have more of a finished look. They cost more money, too.

4. Backsplash outlets no more

A kitchen backsplash can be a great finishing touch to pull a kitchen design together. Because building codes require electrical outlets at regular intervals throughout the kitchen, electrical outlets break up the look of the backsplash.

In the past, we’ve seen homeowners go to great lengths to mask these outlets (e.g., faux painting). A more

Look for bathroom shower and tub faucets conveniently located where you can turn on the water without getting wet. Similarly, “toe kick” light switches at the bathroom vanities make it easy to turn on lights with dirty or wet hands.

A gas starter for a wood-burning fireplace is the best of both worlds.

With a gas starter, you can look like an Eagle Scout starting a fire effortlessly.

No kindling, no newspaper, no sweat!

7. Electric outlets

Incorporating combo electrical outlet/USB ports into key areas in the kitchen, by bed tables and in home offices can make charging your devices far more convenient.

Kivik. Hemnes. Ektorp. Even if you aren’t sure what these funny-sounding words mean, they’re probably familiar to you. That’s because they’re the names of sofas and bookshelves from Ikea. But did you know that the Swedish company names its products after towns in Northern Europe as a nod to its Nordic heritage? And that the blue and yellow logo was inspired by the Swedish flag?

It’s easy to forget how much Scandinavian design has influenced the American furniture market. Thanks to modern mass retailers, including Ikea, clean lines and starkly simple silhouettes are so popular that they’ve become mainstream. But what is Scandinavian design, and why did it become one of the go-to design styles in the developed world? And are we doing it right?

Let’s start with the basics. The style emerged in the 1950s as part of a modern movement in Nordic design (i.e. Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway) that prioritized function and affordability over preciousness and luxury. Marked by pale colors, natural materials and lean, leggy furniture, the aesthetic was largely a response to the region’s short days and long winters, which called for bright, practical interiors.

These days, it’s a favorite among minimalists who tout its influence on the mid-century modern movement and praise its lack of fuss. As such, the aesthetic seems particularly trendy around the new year, when resolutions to declutter are top of mind.

While there’s a great deal of overlap between Scandinavian and mid-century modern design, the biggest differences can be found in the lighting and color palette. Mid-century modern interiors tend to explore darker hues and work just fine in low light, whereas Scandinavian interiors aim to maximize lightness in a room.

“It’s as much a lifestyle as it is a look,” said interior designer Rachel Dougan, who owns ViVi Interiors in Washington, D.C. “It’s disciplined.

Swedish benches, for example, have longer legs. And I think to myself, how easy would it be to store stuff underneath there? But Swedish design has no place for clutter because clutter ruins the lines. It begs to be left alone so that air and light can circulate through it. It’s aspirational.”

Don’t be intimidated, however. The style doesn’t have to be adapted in full – it works well with industrial and farmhouse pieces – and for the most part, the furniture isn’t as delicate as it looks. Loi Thai, who owns the

Swedish antiques shop Tone on Tone in Bethesda, Md., said most Scandinavian furniture is quite rugged and will stand the test of time.

The appetite for modern, minimalist design can be felt even in more traditional places, Thai said, where people shy away from big, heavy sets of furniture. “The thing about Swedish furniture is that it has a lot of classic elements, there’s so much history there,” he said, “but it lends itself easily to a modern interior because it’s very edited.”

Magazines and design blogs tend to make Scandinavian design look impossibly neat and expensive. Pictures show whitewashed walls, natural wood floors, dramatic pendant chandeliers and rooms flooded with light. These interpretations aren’t always realistic, so if you’re looking to work the aesthetic in your own home, just remember that it’s high on function, low on fuss.

“The dining room is a great place to start,” Thai said. “One by one, swap out heavy dining chairs for light ones and mix a variety of colors and materials. It will feel inviting and personal.”

To fill in the gaps of a mix-andmatch look, try Ikea’s birch-legged Leifarne chairs ($59 each, ikea.com) or World Market’s Paige square-back dining chairs ($400 for a set of two, worldmarket.com), which Dougan likes.

As for tables, Ikea makes a basic, extendable wood table called the Norden ($299, ikea.com) that can be paired with just about any chair from around the house.

In living spaces, avoid large, dark rugs and wall-to-wall bookshelves, and instead spring for a pale handwoven mat, such as one from Safavieh’s Rag collection ($30 for a 2-by-4-foot rug, overstock.com), and a few large potted fig trees. Accessories should be few and purposeful: copper light fixtures and large mirrors to bounce light around the room, rainbow-colored candle-holders for a small, bold accent, and clusters of pop art on the wall.

Consider introducing some high-contrast masculine elements to keep the room from looking overly feminine, Dougan advises.

“This look has a lot of pastels,” she says, so add some contrasting elements, such as a raw wood coffee table or industrial metal pendant lamp, or even a metallic piece, such as a heavy gold clock. And of course, restraint and balance are crucial. One of the most common mistakes newbies make when decorating with a Scandinavian look in mind is going overboard.

“Swedish furniture is very leggy,” Dougan said. “If you aren’t careful, your whole living room will look like it’s full of twigs.”
