Elburn officials might seek special election on police pension issue Officials to explore cost of potential referendum in November KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Village officials will consider seeking a special election in November to address the future of the Elburn Police Department.

At a Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday night, village board members asked village staff members to determine the cost of a special election. It is too late to get the question on the ballot for April, and since there is not a regularly scheduled election this November, the village would require a special election to ask a referendum question at that time.

Residents packed a meeting earlier this month after Village President Dave Anderson said all options – including the disbanding of the village’s police department – would be considered as the village continues to grapple with the rising cost of police pensions. If the department would disband, police services in the village would be provided by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Residents at the Feb. 2 meeting said they did not want the police department to disband. On Tuesday night, a smaller group of residents showed up at the meeting, and there was no such outcry.

Anderson pointed to an unsuccessful referendum in 2012, when voters rejected a proposal to create a new property tax levy specifically to fund police pensions.

When the village reached a population of 5,000 residents, it became necessary to create and fund a new police pension system. Because residents rejected a tax levy specifically to fund the pensions, the village instead has had to rely on money used to fund other village services to pay the pensions.

On Tuesday night, Anderson said he felt there was a “pretty good crowd” at the Feb. 2 board meeting that seemed to be behind such a referendum. Bob Britz, the village’s attorney, said the village would be asking for the establishment of a separate fund and then also asking for a certain amount of money that would have to be determined.

Anderson said such a move would be the board’s call. Village Administrator Erin Willrett asked whether board members wanted staff to determine the cost, and trustees indicated they would want that.

Britz said there were pros and cons to running a special election. He said those who strongly supported the referendum would turn out to vote, but that overall turnout could be low since nothing else would be scheduled on

the ballot.

Board member Jeff Walter said he wanted to make certain that voters would be behind such a move.

“I don’t think it’s worth putting a referendum on it if we don’t have public support,” Walter said. “It would be a waste of the public’s money, especially a special election.”

Trustee Dave Gualdoni said it would be important to let residents know what could happen in the event a referendum would be approved or denied.

“I think it’s important that people know what they are voting on,” Gualdoni said.

Britz said village officials couldn’t use village funds or resources to make a case for the referendum, but they could let residents know what the situation would be if the referendum were successful, and what it would be if it were unsuccessful.

Trustee Craig Swan said it would be important for village leaders to get the message out.

“I would say the group had passion last time,” Swan said, adding that if a referendum were to be rejected, “We are either going to cut departments or cut what we do somewhere else.”

St. Charles aldermen back updated 1st Street plan ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee on Tuesday put its support behind an updated proposal for the third phase of the First Street Redevelopment project.

The committee, which consists of St. Charles aldermen, voted, 9-0, in favor of recommending a PUD, also known as planned unit development, preliminary plan, as well as a redevelopment agreement with First Street Development

II LLC, for the project’s third phase.

The third phase covers the portion of the site located south of the planned East Plaza and north of Illinois Street and would include three mixed-use buildings and a parking deck. ALE Solutions will move from its current location at the Fox Island Square building nearby to one of the proposed buildings, according to city staff and Bob Rasmussen, a First Street Development II partner at the meeting.

Batavia library officials request TIF funds for building improvement

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Public Library officials are seeking tax increment financing assistance from the city to help pay for a proposed $950,000 building repair project.

“The library is now 13 years old,” Batavia Library Board President Doug Sullivan told aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

“It is starting to show its age in limited instances.”

The library is asking for about $100,000 in TIF funds to pay for the project, which is estimated to cost $950,000. Plans are to begin the project in the next few months. Tax increment financing is a tool that allows municipalities to earmark property tax revenues from increases in assessed values within a designated TIF district.

Several exterior improvements are proposed as part of the project, including repairing sidewalks around the building.

“There are different spots where there are tripping hazards,” Batavia Public Library Director George Scheetz said.

“We’ve done some grinding to try to level things out, but there are some areas that need more work than that.”

Hand rails and decorative ornamental railing also need work, he said.

“They are starting to rust pretty bad,” Scheetz said. “They are not galvanized steel. We’ve done repainting and things like that, but the hand rails especially have not stood up well. So we want to replace those.”

Improvements to the library’s book deposit area also are proposed. Another piece of the project includes reconfiguring the library’s stairway at the corner of Wilson and Water streets.

“It’s a wide stairway, but it narrows down at the top,” Scheetz said. “We proposed really expanding the top, moving the walls at the very top and spreading those out to create more of an open view and entryway into that part of the library. The idea is to more directly and invitingly connect the library campus with the downtown area.”

Aldermen were receptive to the request for TIF funds.

The redevelopment agreement outlines a construction schedule that includes preliminary site work starting in April and construction of the first building – ALE Solutions’ future home – and the parking deck by July, said Rita Tungare, the city’s director of community and economic development.

Construction on the second building will begin by spring 2016 and the third building by spring 2017, Tungare said.

Land under city ownership will be transferred to the de-

velopment at no cost on a per building basis subject to specific conditions, according to the agreement. The city also agreed to pay for the public parking deck up to a maximum of $1.9 million. Residents and business owners Tuesday shared various comments on the plan at the meeting.

James Petterec, owner of JP Jewelers, said he signed a lease for his store on the west side of First Street in 2009 expecting to have the east side developed in three years or less, but that did not happen.

“The time is now – we cannot wait any longer to get the project going,” Petterec said.

Former Colonial Cafe President Tom Anderson said the sidewalks for the project need to be wider and questioned the three-year construction schedule. He also recommended the parking lot have outside signage that indicates how many parking spots are available.

The PUD preliminary plan and the redevelopment agreement will go before the full city council for a final vote March 2, Tungare said.

Geneva aldermen approve feasibility study for Route 31

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After nearly two hours of discussion Tuesday, Geneva aldermen unanimously approved a resolution to submit a feasibility study for a proposed road “diet” for Route 31. The discussion and action occurred at a special Committee of the Whole, followed by the regular City Council meeting, where final action would be taken.

The initial proposal called for turning the fourlane road into a two-lane road with a third lane for turns and bike lanes. The reconfiguration would be done by repainting after the Illinois Department of Transportation resurfaces Route 31 from Elizabeth Place

south into Batavia.

The road diet was proposed to start north of Fabyan Parkway and end at Elizabeth Place.

But an engineering study showed bike lanes were not feasible, given that roadway widths varied between the standard 40 feet to as little as just more than 35 feet, according to the study. The study did support a reduction to two lanes as a safety enhance-

ment.

Aldermen amended the initial plan to limit lane tapering to begin no further south than the most northerly commercial entrance. Mayor Kevin Burns cautioned that all the aldermen were voting on was to submit a plan for consideration by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“IDOT could say, ‘Thanks for all the work, but no thanks,’ ” Burns said.

COVER STORY ‘HE IS A SMART LITTLE COOKIE’ Toddler making progress after diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia

bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE TOWNSHIP – Almost two years after his diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia – a type of blood cancer – Aiden Becker has transformed from a sick toddler to a smiling 3-year-old boy with attitude – and hair.

“Curly hair came back after he lost it to chemo. He’s got little ringlets,” said his grandmother, Kathy Becker of Sugar Grove Township.

She and her husband, Larry Becker, are Aiden’s legal guardians. “I don’t know if it will stay curly or go back to being straight, but it’s really cute.”

Aiden lost his hair during the first year of intense chemotherapy, Larry Becker said. Now Aiden is on what is called a maintenance level.

It’s the same drugs, just not as high of a dose, he said.

Diagnosed at 21 months in March 2013, Aiden is more than halfway through his 3½-year chemotherapy treatment regimen, Kathy Becker said. Aiden will finish his cancer treatment by August or September of 2016, after he turns 5 years old.

Although Aiden is doing better, he still goes through a lot of testing and treatments and does not feel well a lot of the time, Kathy Becker said.

“Every four weeks, he gets his blood drawn – but now we don’t have to do a spinal tap every four weeks – now it’s every other or every third month,” she said. “Kids should be outside playing and having fun. They shouldn’t have to be going through all these treatments and doing all this stuff.”

Christmas in the hospital was an experience, she said.

“Nobody likes seeing kids in the hospital,” she said. “He was in isolation, and toys kept showing up at the door.

Santa snuck in on Christmas morning and brought all sorts of stuff.”

“We are thrilled with how well he’s doing,” she added.

“But we feel horrible that he had to go through what he

had to go through.”

When Aiden outgrew his crib, he started jumping on his toddler bed. The Beckers bought him a mini trampoline so he could direct his energy.

“He goes on the trampoline and says, ‘Hop, hop hop.’

His speech is delayed, and he gets therapy every week because he’s not talking in full sentences yet,” Kathy Becker said. “He is a smart little

cookie. He knows his letters, numbers, colors and shapes.”

Larry Becker said when he reads a book to Aiden, the boy is pointing out animals and making all the animal sounds.

“Because he’s speech delayed, seeing these things [means] he’s developing ‘normally.’ It just makes you appreciate everything he’s been through and that he really is going to be OK,” Larry Beck-

er said. “It’s really amazing to see how his personality is developing. It’s always nice in a child to see them develop – and especially him because of all the things he’s been through.”

Kathy Becker said his favorite electronic game is Plants vs. Zombies.

“He makes chewing sounds when the zombies eat his brains,” she said. “That is the highlight of the game for him.”

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is going to build Aiden a tree house this spring. And in the summer, Kathy Becker said they will host a big backyard party to celebrate – and to say thank you to everyone who has been so kind and supportive.

“We’ve gotten support from family and friends – and strangers. People I don’t even remember what their names are … ask, ‘How is Aiden doing?’ I get asked that all the time. It’s been a real touching experience as a caregiver taking care of others, to have it reversed and to have others take care of us.”

She said she is especially grateful to all her co-workers and her boss, adding, “I never felt I had to choose between a job and taking care of Aiden.”

She said Aiden’s type of cancer is 90 percent curable, but wondering about Aiden’s long-term health still nags at her.

“This is what helps kill the leukemia, but they don’t know the outcome – down the road – of giving all these chemo drugs to these little kids,” Becker said. “But if he did not take them, we would not have him any longer.”

Geneva woman faces additional charges in foiled shooting plot 7

Lindsay Kanittha Souvannarath, 23, Lindsay and Randall Kanittha Steve Shep- Souvannarath herd, 20, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, also have been charged with conspiracy to commit arson, conspiracy to use weapons

for a dangerous purpose and unlawfully conveying threats through social media, said Denise Smith, deputy director of public prosecutions at the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service. Souvannarath and Shepherd on Tuesday appeared in Provincial Court in Halifax. Their duty counsel said they are not seeking bail, and the case is set to be continued March 6, Smith said.

The charging document presented in court Tuesday indicates that Souvannarath and Shepherd were accused of conspiring with James Lee Gamble, who is deceased, on the weapons-related charge, Smith said.

The documents lists the

charges as occurring between the period of Jan. 6 and Saturday, Smith said.

A Crime Stoppers tip that originated in Canada suggested a 19-year-old – later identified as Gamble – and Souvannarath had access to firearms, and they intended to go to a public venue Saturday with the goal of opening fire to kill citizens before killing themselves, police reported. Shepherd and Souvannarath were arrested at 2 a.m. Friday at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, police said.

Gamble was found dead Friday morning at a residence in Timberlea, a community within the province of Nova Scotia, police said. Authorities seized three long-barrel rifles at the home, Canadian police said at a news conference Saturday.

Canadian citizens placed phone calls, sent electronic messages and dropped off baked goods to thank police agencies for their efforts to stop the shooting plot, wrote Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Halifax Regional Police in a statement issued Tuesday.

“The news that this event was planned was an eye opener to all and has shocked Haligo-

nians and Nova Scotians to their core,” police wrote in the statement. “Although we regularly plan, train and equip for incidents, such as this, it has equally shocked us in the policing community.”

Souvannarath’s middle name was corrected as being spelled “Kanittha” in the Tuesday statement.

A 17-year-old male from Cole Harbour also was taken into custody during the investigation and released without charge, Canadian authorities wrote in a news release on Saturday. Police described him as a person of interest but reported there was no evidence to link him to charges.

“The investigation is ongoing,” police wrote in the Tuesday statement.

Lindsay Souvannarath not seeking bail; case continued to March 6

Two apply for Batavia City Council vacancy BIG eal BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen next week will interview the two residents who have applied to fill a vacancy on the Batavia City Council after the recent resignation of 5th Ward Alderman Steve Vasilion.

Kevin Botterman and Mark Foster will be interviewed at the Feb. 24 Committee of the Whole meeting, and then aldermen plan to make the appointment. The successful candidate will be sworn in at the March 2 council meeting.

Vasilion was elected to the City Council in 2013 after defeating Eldon Frydendall for the 5th Ward seat. Frydendall had been on the Batavia City Council for 32 years.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and the council will appoint someone to fill the seat until Vasilion’s term expires in May 2017. The person who is elected in the April 2017 election will serve a full four-year term.

Botterman and Foster are former employees of Shaw Media, which publishes the Kane County Chronicle.

As a reporter for the Kane County Chronicle, Foster, 57, covered Batavia, including attending City Council meetings.

Botterman, 53, was a writer and photographer for Shaw Media from 2003 to 2007. He has lived in Batavia since 2003.

His past municipal expe-

rience includes serving on the Hampshire Zoning Board of Appeals, and as a member of the Hampshire Township Board. Botterman and his wife, Lori, served as volunteer co-campaign managers for Vasilion’s campaign.

“It is an opportunity to kind of continue what Steve had articulated in his campaign for alderman,” Botterman said.

“He wanted to improve and expand the city’s communication efforts with the citizens, help improve the commercial activity opportunities throughout Batavia and focus on improving the downtown business district, with an emphasis on the riverfront.”

Foster, 57, has lived in Batavia for more than 30 years.

“I’ve lived all over town,” Foster said. “I love the town. I love the people. Because of my familiarity with how the city functions, I think I am somebody who can jump right in and get to work.”

Foster said he doesn’t have an agenda.

“I do want to represent the interests of the people of the 5th Ward,” Foster said. “But I think just from my past history of having lived all over the community, I’m not going to be somebody who’s out there trying to favor one ward or one interest group, or anything like that, in the city. I think we’ve all got to work together to continue to make Batavia a better place.”

Park district’s cheerleading coaches prepare team This isn’t your mother’s cheerleading squad.

In the past decade, cheerleading has grown to be so much more than looking pretty from the sidelines.

Today, cheerleaders not only dance and boost team spirit, but they also compete. High school and college teams perform jaw-dropping jumps, flip-flop and tumble across the floor, and work together to create awe-inspiring team stunts. Just stop by a Geneva High School basketball game, and you’ll find the cheerleaders are working just as hard as the players on the court.

The Geneva Park District began its Angels Competitive Cheerleading Team as an affordable opportunity for girls ages 5 and older to learn the skills required for middle school and high school cheerleading squads.

The team practices twice weekly in January through

April to build a routine for the Illinois Park District Gymnastics and Cheerleading Conference competitions. Participants keep their skills sharp throughout the summer by performing throughout the community at the Kane County Cougars stadium, the Geneva Park District’s Concerts in the Park Deborah and Swedish Von Oehsen Days. Along the way, participants learn the basic skills of cheerleading and dance, including jumps, Jenifer flexibility, Camery strength, leaps, turns, tumbling and stunting.

In 2014, the Geneva Park District found new coaches for its Angels cheerleading program. With more than 11 years of experience in elementary education and a

passion for dance, Deborah Von Oehsen was perfect for the position. Von Oehsen knew she wanted to find a co-worker she could trust, and Jenifer Camery immediately came to mind.

Von Oehsen and Camery have danced and worked together for more than nine years. As the founder and artistic director of her own dance company, Dynamic Dance Allstars, Von Oehsen trained and eventually hired Camery as a fellow teacher. Camery began taking dance classes as a young girl, which lead her to serve as a captain on the Batavia Dance Team and eventually perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Von Oehsen and Camery are both teachers within Batavia School District 101 and hold degrees in elementary education from Northern Illinois University.

Their combined passion for dance and experience with children serves them well as they guide these young Angels cheerleaders to practice perseverance while preparing for up-

coming competitions and performances. Their focus at practice and competitions is to provide these young athletes with a safe and fun environment to teach them the power of positive teamwork.

As a mother with a 4-yearold daughter and another on the way, Von Oehsen finds joy in watching children learn and grow.

“We want them to work as a team and build confidence individually – and in their team members – so they can proudly take the floor. Of course they learn how to jump, tumble and dance, but most importantly they have fun,” Von Oehsen said.

BNSF plans to expand rail capacity between Aurora, Sugar Grove

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – BNSF Railway Company plans to expand rail capacity between Aurora and Sugar Grove to meet increased freight demand.

The company hopes to start grading and track work by the end of this year or next year, BNSF Railway Com-

pany spokesman Andy Williams said. The track will be expanded from a single track to a double track, he said.

“We’re doing it to meet increased freight demands,” Williams said. “Since the economy has started to recover, freight demands have increased and that extra track will help us be able to move freight more efficiently and quickly through the Chi-

cago area.”

The project is part of an estimated $339 million in rail capacity improvement projects and maintenance that BNSF is planning this year in Illinois.

BNSF’s maintenance program in Illinois will include 1,099 miles of track surfacing, the replacement of 52 miles of rail and signal upgrades, according to BNSF

officials.

Williams said motorists will be made aware if they will be impacted by the project.

“Any time we block a crossing for construction, we limit the amount of time that we are doing it,” Williams said. “We will notify proper authorities and let them know so that appropriate detours can be posted.”

She was born November 30, 1990, in Geneva, the daughter of James and Claudia (Thar) Suchor.

Maddie graduated from Geneva High School and then went on to the University of Kentucky.

She graduated with a bachelor of science in nursing degree and was a sister of the Delta Gamma sorority. After graduation she was working as a nurse in the PACU at the University of Kentucky Hospital where she brought comfort and care to her patients. Maddie loved all sports and was an outdoor enthusiast. Her beautiful smile and love of life will be missed forever by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her loving parents, James and Claudia of Geneva; dear sister, Sarah of LaGrange; and dear twin brother, Joe of Geneva; loving grandfather, Melvin Thar of Wheaton; and many dear uncles, aunts, cousins, and countless special friends.

Sugar Grove Girl Scout’s troop places 2nd in food challenge

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Members of Girl Scout Troop 4882 didn’t know how their home cooked and locally sourced pasta dish would stack up when they entered Local Chef, a joint competition between Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois and Illinois Agri-Women.

“We had no idea how many other troops were entering or what their mileage looked like,” troop leader Stephanie Alvendia said, referring to the goal of creating a dish with the least amount of distance.

Seventeen-year-old Madison Runyan of Sugar Grove said they must have done something right – they did place second, after all.

She and the others in her troop – Maddie Alvendia of Oswego and Alexis Thomas of Aurora – made whole-grain pasta with a homegrown tomato and basil sauce, the West Aurora High School senior said.

Runyan said they traveled about 38.2 miles to gather their ingredients. The tomato and basil came from a home garden, the eggs were from a local farm and the flour was obtained from a mill in DeKalb.

According to the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, seven groups participated in the contest, which was prompted

by Illinois Agri-Women wanting to increase the number of women joining the agricultural workforce.

The competition, which required teams to make a video of themselves making the dish, began in October and ended in mid-December, according to the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois.

“If I could get the chance to do it again, I probably would because it was fun,” Runyan said.

Her troop won $350, which the girls plan to put toward a summer trip to Mexico, she said.

The troop also got an all-expense-paid trip to the Illinois Agri-Women’s Changing the Face of Agriculture event at Illinois State University on March 6. Clips of the girls’ projects will be featured, and the girls will be recognized on stage.

His original idea of selling cookies during school as a way to beat the Monday blues conflicted with a non-compete policy with the food service, the 9-year-old said.

Undeterred, his plan evolved to selling the peanut-free treats in the school’s entryway as the after-school enrichment programs ended.

Tuesday marked his first day of selling the cookies – he plans to sell them again Monday – and he made his first sale even before the after-school programs ended.

“My goal is to sell all of them and raise $80 for Cal’s Angels,” Will said of the 80 cookies he had ordered.

Some people bought several cookies at a time, making that goal seem feasible.

“You might sell out today, Will,” his mother, Gretchen Hubbe, said.

His diligence on the project – which included researching cookies and

11 assist parents with identification of self-injurious behavior and share strategies for prevention of this dangerous behavior.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With a “tough mix” of urban and rural regions, Kane County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said the county is a challenging area to cover with transit systems.

Tom Rickert, deputy director of transportation, said the county wants to make its corridors more viable and more sustainable. It is trying to do its best to continue to improve infrastructure to increase ridership, primarily with Pace, he said.

“At the county level, we need to figure out how to grow transit,” he told the Transportation Committee on Tuesday.

The transit corridors are the subject of an evaluation report, a draft of which was presented to the committee by Trevor Dick of Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

His presentation included the top 10 existing transit-supportive corridors. Generally, these corridors are in the eastern part of the county, which has a “robust” transportation system that includes Pace bus routes and Metra stations, according to the report.

“Although the Randall Road corridor did not fall within the list of top 10 existing Transit-Supportive Corridors, it is still an important transit route within Kane County,” according to the report.

“Significant investment has been made along the corridor to improve transit and pedestrian infrastructure, however – as it exists today – the Randall Road corridor received low scores in a number of key criteria including walkability and population density.”

Including Pace in the development review process is among the ways municipalities can support transit-supportive corridors, Dick said.

Rickert said the county intends to work with municipalities on this issue.

Why ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ remains relevant

By SAM TANENHAUS Bloomberg News Until a week or so ago, Harper Lee was the model of literary reticence. In the 55 years since the publication of her “To Kill a Mockingbird,” she had settled into silence, firmly resisting the pleas of her many admirers for a second book.

All that changed when her publisher, News Corp.’s Harper Collins, said it would publish a new novel by Lee in July in a colossal first printing of two million. The number could increase. Lee, who is now 88, her estate and her publisher are all about to get much richer.

Not that she needs the money or the recognition.

In publishing terms, Lee is a rare phenomenon – a one-hit wonder whose fame and suc-

cess have continued to grow, despite changes in literary fashion. Even now, “To Kill a Mockingbird” sells as many as one million copies a year – yielding its author an annual royalty of an estimated $1.7 million.

In the U.S., several generations of students have been raised on the moral fable of Atticus Finch, the widowed Southern lawyer, and his daughter, Scout, who together combat racial injustice in an Alabama town during the Great Depression.

Many hoped the new book would be a departure or even a sequel. But after the initial excitement, “Go Set a Watchman” appears to be a dusted-off, preliminary version of “To Kill a Mockingbird” featuring the same main characters, only set 20 years later.

And at a time when the movie “Selma” has kindled a debate about the roles of whites and blacks in the civil rights movement, Lee’s 1960 classic is facing fresh scrutiny, as well.

“It has been under attack for years by some serious critics for being simplistic and problematic in a privileged-white-lady-solves-therace-issue kind of way,” Jessa Crispin, a literary journalist, wrote in the New York Times.

True, a sequel, offered as a new work, may call attention to Lee’s old-fashioned if good-hearted ideas about racial harmony – especially if in the new book Atticus seems as naïve in the face of racial hatred as he does in the first.

But, for all the merits of the latest criticism of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” its appeal

never rested on its realistic picture of Southern life. It was anachronistic even in its day, and there’s skepticism on other grounds, too – Lee wrote at a time when Southern women were some of the most forceful voices in American fiction, women such as Flannery O’Connor, who wrote the novel “The Violent Bear It Away,” which was published the same year as “To Kill a Mockingbird” and also is set in the rural South.

O’Connor’s own verdict of “To Kill a Mockingbird” was succinct: “It’s a wonderful children’s book.”

Given all this, the surprise is that Lee’s book, which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize, continues to occupy the exalted place it does. In 2001, when Chicago educators started a citywide reading campaign, the book they chose was “To

Kill a Mockingbird.” Thousands of copies were placed in schools and libraries. “It’s exciting partly because this book deals with important themes like civil rights and social justice, but it’s also about creating a culture of reading,” Mary Dempsey, Chicago’s library commissioner, said.

That last point helps explain the novel’s enduring appeal. It may not be serious literature, but its characters are intensely bookish.

“Go Set a Watchman” may not achieve the same result, but the title alone is typical of Harper Lee. It comes from the Book of Isaiah – the King James version, needless to say.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Nate Navigato addressed the Geneva boys basketball team’s late turnover woes shortly after speaking to his early scoring flair.

Both elements significantly impacted the Vikings’ 66-59 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory at St. Charles North on Tuesday night, with the former adding plenty of drama to what already were thick proceedings.

With its 15th straight win, Geneva (24-2, 11-1) strengthened its grip on the conference race while also increasing its case for the top seed at its own Class 4A regional. The rest of the Vikings’ Tri-Cities brethren will be on hand then – including North (16-8, 9-3) – and the Vikings know advancing will hinge in part on ball security.

“I would say it’s a little bit of an issue, definitely,” Navigato said. “But we’ve just got to keep working on it. We’re going to get better. We will.

That’s what practice is for.”

Geneva shot 9 for 11 in the third quarter and threatened to put the game away after holding only a five-point lead at halftime despite Navigato’s 18 points. With about two minutes remaining in the quarter, however, North reserve guard Jarod Karom began his oneman pursuit of thwarting those plans.

Karom struck for 11 quick points – on 3-for-3 shooting from the field and a 3-of-5 effort at the free-throw line – to keep the hosts lurking.

“We had a lot of guys step up when the starters – including myself – didn’t get the job done,” North senior forward Jack Callaghan said.

Of course, North revved things up not just behind Karom, but its staunch team defense.

Geneva committed 17 turnovers to North’s five, and coupled with a 9 for 14 effort from the free-throw line after halftime, helped the North Stars have a chance.

“We called on the press, because we were hoping to get them going,” Callaghan said.

“They like to play at a slower pace, so we wanted to speed them up. I thought we did that. ... We just didn’t have enough at the end.”

North Stars coach Tom Poulin vowed his team hadn’t played its best basketball yet, a torrid recent stretch notwithstanding.

North has won 14 of 18 games but was dealt a big blow in its bid to force a possible three-way River tie with Geneva and St. Charles East, which

“We should get those offensive rebounds a lot of the time,” Navigato said. “Loudon was big tonight with those offensive rebounds. He kept alot of plays alive, so it was awesome.”

“There are times where this team just looks unstoppable and fluid in what we do, and there are other times where we just, I don’t know, we make some bonehead mistakes,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said. “But be that as it may, we knew that this was going to be a game that we would have to grind a little bit.”

Griffin Hammer led a balanced North scoring attack with 14 points, with Poulin lauding the way the 6-foot-5 sophomore forward “played like a man down there in the land of the trees.”

Unfortunately for the Batavia girls basketball team, that’s exactly how long it took in its Class 4A regional semifinal matchup with eighth-seeded South Elgin on Tuesday night at Addison Trail.

Despite the long scoring drought putting the Bulldogs in a bind, and falling behind by as many as 11 points in the second half, the ninth-seeded Bulldogs managed to fight their way back into the game against a solid South Elgin squad.

Batavia forward Hannah Frazier got her own rebound on a missed free throw an and-one opportunity and stuck it home to tie the score at 31 with less than a minute to play in regulation, eventually sending it to overtime where South Elgin would ultimately prevail, 39-36.

In the second half, Batavia got a boost offensively thanks in large part to Frazier and junior Jessica Koch.

Koch and Frazier combined to score all 14 of Batavia’s points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs pushed the game to overtime.

There, the game remained tight until a runner by South Elgin’s Delaney Kelleher made it 36-34. After that, the Storm managed to hit three of their final four free throws to put the game away.

“We’ve got every single person coming back and we’ve got a sophomore team coming in that was 22-5,” Jensen said while assessing the state of his program in the wake of the loss. “It’s gonna be a heck of a battle for however many jerseys I’ve got next year.”

ROSELLE – While the Geneva girls basketball team’s offensive was trying to gain traction in the first half of Tuesday’s IHSA Class 4A Lake Park Regional semifinal, the defense kept it ahead of the host school.

The Viking offense finally got on track in the second half to put the game away in the 58-36 victory.

On Friday, Geneva, seeded second in its sectional, will play the winner of tonight’s game between Schaumburg (seventh seed) and Wheaton Warrenville South (10th) for the regional crown.

Lopez, a 170-pounder, placed second at the Glenbard North Sectional and will join Saints teammates Anthony Rubino (126) and Keone Derain (152) at the state meet in Champaign this weekend.

Lopez, this week’s Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about his achievement.

Here’s an edited transcript: What was your mindset entering the sectional final [against Willowbrook’s Jack Jessen]?

Once I won that semifinal match, I felt comfortable. Jessen’s obviously a top kid in the state,

but it’s a kid I know, so I just wanted to go and compete. I was excited more than anything. It’s a great opportunity to get downstate [this] weekend.

How much do you wrestle live against [coaches Jason and Chris Potter] during practice?

They’re kind of our drill partners, but when we go live, they kind of give other guys looks.

Can you talk about the football injury that kept you out for the start of the wrestling season?

It was a broken thumb during the (St. Charles) North game. My left hand, so I had to get surgery after the season. … I could just run and do as much footwork as I can. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because my footwork problems that I’ve had since freshman, sophomore year got completely fixed. I couldn’t really get on the mat, so that’s all I could do.

LISLE – Despite jumping out to a six-point lead after the first quarter and not allowing a shot attempt for its opponents until the ninth possession of the game, the Aurora Christian girls basketball team lost a defensive battle to Seton Academy, 28-25, in the Class 2A Lisle Sectional semifinal.

Momentum swings played a major role Tuesday in a game where baskets came at a premium.

“If you would have told me we would hold them to 28 points, I would have told you we would win the game,” Eagles coach Burney Wilkie .

The Eagles (20-9) led until the 2:10 mark in the second quarter, when Seton was able to tie the score.

The Sting would lead at halftime, 17-14. Then in the third, after a Danielle Bailey 3-pointer gave Seton a 24-19 lead, the Sting dramatically slowed the game down.

They held on to the ball for the last 2:30 of the third quarter, only to have an errant pass picked off by Aurora Christian’s Natasha Brown.

throw, but then steal the ensuing inbound pass with nine seconds left in the game.

A desperation 3 by junior Gabby Galbato sailed wide, sealing the Eagles’ fate and sending the Sting to the sectional final.

“We came out here and fought as hard as we could,” Galbato said.

Galbato finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

However, 12 of those 15 points came in the first half.

She was complemented by senior teammate, Brown, who scored five points to go along with 12 rebounds.

“Best rebounder in the state this year. Best rebounder in school history,” said Wilkie about Brown.

For the Sting, Bailey led the way with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Brittany Hardeman also chipped in with six points and five rebounds.

“I was nervous, but we just had to calm down and play our game,” Bailey said.

Her coach, Kevin Green, never lost faith either.

“That’s my floor general,” Green said. “I don’t ever think about any shot that she missed.

She can miss her first 37 – she’s going to hit 38.”

Can the crossovers: The Upstate Eight Conference did away with the regular season-ending crossovers this year.

Teams from the UEC River and Valley divisions used to close the regular season with matchups against teams that finished in the corresponding places in the other division, but Woods said the departures next year of UEC Valley members Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley accelerated the discontent many coaches felt with the crossovers.

“I don’t think the coaches thought it was too meaningful, especially with a lot of the Valley schools leaving (for the DuPage Valley Conference), so we all agreed to not play them because that would open it up for more meaningful, nonconference opponents,” Woods said.

“Maybe ones we’ll see in regionals or ones that may better prepare us for the state playoffs.”

As postseason seeds for Class 3A and 4A boys basketball teams are set to be unveiled Thursday, what’s long been known around the Tri-Cities moves closer to reality – a cutthroat Geneva Regional awaits the Tri-Cities teams.

All five teams at the Geneva Regional – Geneva, St. Charles East, St. Charles North, DeKalb and Batavia – are at least three games above .500. The Vikings, Saints and North Stars are engaged in a furious fight for the Upstate Eight Conference River title, and all three programs are enjoying one of their finest seasons in recent history.

Count East coach Pat Woods among those upset with being pitted against those teams in regionals as opposed to being part of a sectional that is seeded from top to bottom, as most in the Chicago area are. Woods said “I’m not going to cry the ‘It’s not fair thing,’ but it’s not right.”

“I think it’s a tragedy the way our regional is set up,” Woods said. “Not the fact we don’t want to play those teams, it’s for the fact in my opinion three of the teams in our regional are three of top teams in the sectional and other than Rockford Auburn, I definitely know we have three of the top eight and arguably three of the top five. I just think it’s a tragedy the way the state has it set up because it’s not what’s best for the kids.”

Because the Class 4A DeKalb Sectional is more geographically spread out than other sectionals in the suburbs, it is divided into geographic regionals rather than ones organized by more thorough seeding.

Whichever team emerges from the Geneva Regional likely will have to deal with Auburn at the DeKalb Sectional.

Auburn (24-1) is enjoying a monster season, including creaming a Neuqua Valley team that handed Geneva one of its defeats.

“We monitor everyone and we try to see everyone, although I think it’s obvious Rockford Auburn is a favorite in our sectional,” Woods said. “If we seeded it 1 through 20, they would be the 1 seed, so obviously we’ve paid a lot of attention to them, but a lot of other teams (in the sectional), Jacobs had a very good year, Larkin has proven themselves in the past, Bartlett is having a very good year.

There are a lot of teams that can move on into the sectional.

“Obviously, we’re focused on our regional first, but have to be ready for whatever comes out of [the other regionals] so we’re a little more prepared in that short period of time. But that’s for the coaches [to worry about].”

Testing underway to see if vitamin D pills are beneficial Dear Doctor K: I’ve read several articles about the negative effects of a low blood level of vitamin D, but my doctor said I didn’t need to have my level checked. Why not?

Dear Reader: Many of my patients are asking me the same question. Vitamin D has been in the news a lot in recent years, but we still don’t have solid answers to many questions, including yours.

There is strong evidence that people with a low blood level of vitamin D have higher rates of osteoporosis (thin bones). There is less strong, but still worrisome, evidence that they have higher rates of various autoimmune diseases (including Type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis), atherosclerosis and associated heart attacks and strokes.

The linking of a low blood level of vitamin D to these and other diseases has led many doctors to routinely test the vitamin D levels in their healthy patients.

But an authoritative group, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), points out that even if you have a low vitamin D level, there’s little evidence that taking a vitamin D supplement will do you any good.

There are exceptions. People

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff who might need testing include those who: • Have osteoporosis or other bone-health problems; • Have circumstances that affect fat absorption, including celiac disease or weight-loss surgery. Such conditions lower the amount of vitamin D your gut can digest; • Routinely take medications that interfere with vitamin D activity, including anticonvulsants and glucocorticoids.

Another approach many experts recommend is not to get a blood test: Just take a vitamin D pill daily. If your blood level is low, it may help. And if it’s not low, it won’t hurt. The recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 600 international units (IU) for everyone ages 14 to 70 and 800 IU for those age 71 and older. Some experts recommend 1,000 to 2,000 IU a day.

There are large studies underway here at Harvard and elsewhere to test whether there are health benefits from taking daily

vitamin D supplements. Results are likely to be published in four to six years. Until then, what’s the right thing to do? I think it’s reasonable for people to take regular vitamin D supplements.

For people who are at risk for diseases linked to a low vitamin D level, I get their blood tested.

If their level is low (below 30 ng/ dL), I recommend taking a daily vitamin D supplement. And I retest their blood level, because in my experience the supplements don’t raise the level very much in some people. Some of my colleagues disagree with me on this.

What if the studies that are underway show that I’m wrong – that the blood tests and the daily pills achieve nothing and are just a waste of money? I’d be sorry.

But what if I did no blood testing and did not recommend pills until the studies were completed – and the studies showed that, by waiting, I had put my patients at higher risk for various diseases?

I’d be even sorrier.

Dr. Wallace: Sarah and I are great friends. About three months ago I met a guy at our church and we found out we had a lot in common and started dating. Sarah lives on my street and notices his car coming by on his way to see me, and she told me last week at school that she thinks I am spending too much time with him and accused me of ignoring her.

Dr. Wallace: Do you think a student’s grade should be lowered because of excessive tardies? I just finished the 11th grade, and I’m a very good student, but I’m just not very good at managing my time. At my school we can only accumulate three unexcused tardies per class per semester.

I admit that I was often late, but I was sometimes late by only a few seconds. I know I should be punished and I would accept detention or extra duties, but I do not think lowering my grade by two grades is fair.

Teachers and administrators have tried everything possible to eliminate this problem, but I can honestly say that nothing has been truly successful. At the bridge table, we try not to guess, but sometimes we are forced to take a leap in the dark.

Today’s deal is an example. How should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads the spade king?

The auction was simple and quantitative. South just hoped for the best in spades. If he had opened one club and partner had responded in a suit, South would have had no suitable rebid.

Declarer starts with eight top tricks: one spade, three hearts and four diamonds. He must score a club trick – but should he play low to his jack (hoping East has the queen) or to his king (playing East for the ace)?

To help in the decision, South should duck the first two spade tricks in order to learn about that suit’s split. What should declarer do if he discovers that West either has five spades or started with only four?

When West has five spades, there is no club guess. Declarer must play a club to his king, because if West has the club ace, the contract cannot be made.

West would take at least one club and four spades.

Here, though, the spades break 4-3. Now South will have a pure guess in clubs – assuming East does not give the game away by pausing when a club is led from the dummy. Second hand low is a reliable defensive rule.
