Magic show helps raise money Funds benefit Rotary Club

Two prop rabbit cutouts – one black, one white – had traded places after magician Scott Piner covered each of them with a case.

The children urged Piner to flip the rabbits over, sure that the white rabbit’s other side was black and the black rabbit’s other side was white.

But Piner had a surprise for them: the rabbits’ backsides were yellow and red.

For Piner, such surprises aren’t a matter of “one-upping” the audience. Rather, he said, they’re a matter of keeping the audience guessing.

Piner and fellow magician Arman Sangalang kept audiences guessing over the weekend during three performances, which benefited the Rotary Club of St. Charles.

Proceeds will go toward scholarships and other charitable contributions in the community, club president Bob Brown said, noting the club’s motto is “service above self.”

He thanked Donna Steele for use of the downtown St. Charles theater, as well as Piner, a Rotarian, and Sangalang, a St. Charles East sophomore, for their time.

The magicians performed separately during the Sunday afternoon show and wove humor and audience participation into their acts. Sangalang, for example, brought children up on stage, and Piner crawled over chairs to let audience members draw cards for his first trick.

“If I find your cards,” Piner said, “are you going to be amazed?”

While Piner attended a national magic camp in New

York as a teen, Sangalang taught himself tricks through books, they said. They met through a community event last year, they said, but this was the first time they worked with each other.

“It’s cool to learn from each other,” Piner said.

ATAVIA – Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke started grabbing jars of spaghetti sauce and cans of tuna and put them in his grocery cart as fast as he could.

Schielke wasn’t shopping for himself, however, at the Batavia Jewel-Osco store Monday. Schielke and State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Aurora, were participating in the Kane County Farm Bureau’s 13th annual Food Check-Out Challenge.

the Batavia Bulldogs.

Schielke and Kifowit were given five minutes to collect as much nonperishable food as they could. All the food was bought by the Kane County Farm Bureau and donated to the two food pantries.

Linda Dahms-Firth, director of the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, was assisting Schielke during the shopping spree, and Kifowit was assisted by Diane Renner, director of the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry.

As time started to wind

down, they were given three more minutes to collect more groceries. During the waning minutes, Schielke grabbed some cans of chili and bags of flour. He had a good idea of where everything was located.

“I shop here,” Schielke said. “I kind of knew where stuff was.”

For Schielke, life came full circle by his participation in the check-out challenge.

“I broke ground for the store in 1990,” he said.

Kifowit ended up inching out Schielke in the challenge by collecting $1,273.87 worth of food for Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry, compared to Schielke’s total of $1,227.56.

She attributed her gym shoes as helping contribute to her win.

“Tennis shoes do give you

an advantage,” Kifowit said.

“My other shoes were too dressy.”

Kane County Farm Bureau’s shopping sprees have donated more than $25,000 in groceries since 2001 for local food pantries.

“It does make a difference,” Kane County Farm Bureau Board President Joe White said.

The shopping spree complements Kane County’s “Harvest for ALL” program to benefit local food pantries.

In 2013, 71 farmers and agriculture businesses participated in that program, with pledges and donations topping $43,000.

In 2012, the Kane County Farm Bureau determined the

cumulative effect of its hunger relief efforts had topped the equivalent of 700,000 meals.

At the Kane County Farm Bureau’s Centennial Celebration in September, the organization surpassed the equivalent of one million meals provided to local food pantries and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Dahms-Firth said the donation to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry was much appreciated.

“We take care of 370 families a month,” she said. “We are getting more new people in. We see a lot of people working paycheck to paycheck. They are not making enough to make ends meet.”

Batavia man accused of fighting police, medics

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A 52-year-old Batavia man has been charged with aggravated battery and assault after police said he was combative with police and emergency personnel who responded to the man being passed out Saturday night in the street at the corner of Jefferson and Houston streets.

Mark S. Feely, of the 200 block of North Harrison Street, has been charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated battery to emergency personnel, aggravated assault to a police officer

and obstructing/resisting arrest. He was released from the Kane County Jail on Sunday afternoon after posting $3,000 bail, and has a March 5 court hearing.

Batavia police were called at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday to assist paraMark. S. medics with Feely Feely, who was lying in the middle of the street at the corner of Jefferson and Houston streets, Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said. Feely was about a block and a half

from his home, Bretz said.

“He started becoming verbally abusive and physically abusive with police and medics,” Bretz said. “He was highly intoxicated at the time. He said he had been drinking.”

His behavior continued as he was being placed in an ambulance en route to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Bretz said.

“He continued to be combative and physically abusive,” Bretz said. “He grabbed an officer’s wrist as he was being place in the ambulance.”

Feely started to calm down after being taken to the hospital, Bretz said.

More snow? Monday’s storm likely not last Week to include warmup and rain, but snow remains in the forecast

But the arrival of spring-like weather doesn’t mark an end to the snow season.

Expect more snow. National Weather Service meteorologist David Beachler said Monday that the weather likely will fall into the familiar pattern it’s been in during the winter season – snowy weather, followed by low temperatures.

Expect difficult driving conditions to the west, even if there isn’t more snow today.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said drifts are so high in the area of Route 47 and to the west that they are taller than cars. And, he said, “there’s really not a shoulder.

In Geneva, Kevin Stahr, the communications coordinator for the city of Geneva, said the city had 842 tons of salt on hand before the Monday’s storm. Typically, he said, it would use 150 tons on a 3-inch snowstorm. He said officials have been mixing sand into salt trucks – one bucket of sand for every two buckets of salt.

“East of Randall Road, it’s really not too bad,” he said.

“Then you get to that area between Randall and Route 47. … It’s all right. Which way the wind is blowing will tell us where we’re going to have problems.”

Then, he said, is the area west of Route 47. He said very tall snowdrifts will create “a lot of problems.”

“It really hurts visibility,” he said. “And we’ve got to drive on it. … An eight-hour shift can be a really long day.”

Died: Feb. 13, 2014 GENEVA – Esther Marie Wessels (nee Roper), 100, of Geneva, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Geneva Care Center with her family at her side. She was born in Palatine in 1913, the daughter of Louis and Augusta (Bliese) Roper. Esther grew up on a farm and graduated from Palatine High School. After high school, she worked in a veterinarian’s practice in Barrington, where she met her future husband, Dr. Herbert P. Wessels, an Iowa farm boy and recent Iowa State vet school grad.

They married in 1938 and over the years established both large and small animal practices in Geneva and St. Charles.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1999.

Herb and Esther were longtime residents of Geneva and St. Charles, and in retirement years on the Rock River in Edgerton, Wis. Esther had a wide circle of friends in the Fox Valley through the veterinary practice, the Geneva Chapter of the Eastern Star and the First Congregational Church (UCC)

The parade is set for 2 p.m.

March 15 on East Main Street from Sixth Street to Fourth Avenue in St. Charles. About 8,000 people are expected to watch and participate in the parade.

The lineup so far includes Irish dancers, authentic Irish music, school groups, bands, service clubs and floats.

Then revenues generated from the application of the local composite tax rate to the incremental growth in property tax revenues over the frozen baseline amount are used to pay for redevelopment costs.

Once a development project is completed and has been paid for, the TIF district is dissolved and the tax base is returned to full use by all eligible taxing bodies.

Total project costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated to reach about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of about $520,250. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

In addition, a large storm drain line runs through the city-owned portion of the property.

The line acts as an overflow route from the southern

tip of Depot Pond to a point in the Fox River just north of the city of Batavia’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency garage.

The cost to move the line is $300,000.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

The two Democratic hopefuls in the 14th Congressional District primary include a first-timer and a repeat contender.

Small businessman John J. Hosta of Spring Grove, 54, is new to the race. Dennis Anderson, 63, of Gurnee returns to vie for the seat for the second straight time. He once again would face incumbent Rep. Randy Hultgren, John J. R-Winfield, Hosta who defeated him for re-election in 2012.

Anderson, who is retired from his role providing administrative Dennis support for Anderson cancer researchers, lists economic recovery and job creation as his main priority for the district. He said groups from the private and public sectors could come together to form business incubator partnerships. In addition, he would work to strengthen the district’s transportation infrastructure.

The economy and transportation are key issues for Hosta, but his main goal is protecting U.S. industries. He said some of the recent layoffs in business are a direct result of 20 years of poor foreign trade policies.

“This is how you get the economy going again,” Hosta said. “I would fight tooth and nail to get Whirlpool here [to the district].”

Hosta said that he likes Anderson, but he thinks that he is more business-minded and aggressive than his opponent. Hosta started his custom bedding business in 1987 for interior designers, and saw firsthand the effects of a struggling economy.

Hosta said he plans to spend a few hundred dollars, at most, during his primary campaign. He said that without special-interest support, he is not beholden to anyone. Anderson also touted a Washington outsider stance, adding that he’s not a career politician.

Anderson said he is the better choice in the March 18 primary because he considers himself a pragmatist open to dialogue. He said he has a broader concern and understanding than Hosta of the issues facing 14th district residents.

“We have too many people in Congress driving by ideology,” Anderson said. “I’m willing to talk with anyone about any issue.”

The 14th District covers seven counties, including Kane, DuPage, DeKalb, Will, McHenry, Lake and Kendall.

BATAVIA – Residents, elected officials and campaign supporters Saturday filled Water Street Studios to hear Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner speak.

About 180 people took in 50 minutes of Rauner, including his main stump speech and a question-and-answer session in the studio’s main gallery space rented out by local volunteers.

Near the top of his speech, Rauner listed his four main priorities – creating more jobs, lowering taxes, providing great education and installing term limits for elected officials.

Rauner’s main theme of shaking up Springfield appeared to resonate with much of the audience. Those in attendance clapped and nodded as he spoke about the troubles that have plagued the state for decades.

Rauner repeated several times that the state of Illinois is an emotional issue for him.

He also emphasized that he doesn’t need anything from Springfield and can’t be influenced by outside interest groups.

“I’m [financially] independent,” Rauner said to the crowd. “I don’t need anything from anybody. ... What I need is a prosperous, booming Illinois.”

On jobs, Rauner said he will continue to reach out to other Republican governors to see how they have returned jobs to their state.

He also wants to form a task force that would include leaders from Kane and other counties to tackle spending.

Unions were a persistent theme during Rauner’s visit.

Rauner said union leaders hold too much influence in Springfield and made generic accusations of corruption in organized labor.

When criticized by Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis for being a capitalist, Rauner said he was proud of that and claims he spent years helping teachers in his career as a venture capitalist in charge of growing union pensions.

Retired special education teacher Joan Kolcz of Geneva pressed Rauner on his strategy for pension reform during the session.

Rauner said he would freeze the current system and ensure longtime and retired teachers wouldn’t lose their contributions and then put together a 401k-style plan for current teachers going forward.

After the speech, Kolcz said she was pleased with his answer as long as he is telling the truth.

Kolcz said she still is undecided for the March 18 primary but is starting to lean toward Rauner.

Nick Rentas of Geneva said he plans to vote for Rauner.

He wondered about Rauner’s connection with young voters because the crowd seemed to skew 50 and older, but overall he was pleased with the turnout and Rauner’s presentation.

Finally, a GOP alternative on health care THE WASHINGTON POST For years, Republicans have sniped at the Affordable Care Act without offering a reasonable alternative.

Three GOP senators are trying to change that.

Richard Burr of North Carolina, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Orrin Hatch of Utah have offered an outline of a health care reform package that they say could take the ACA’s place.

Given the shrill rhetoric from the GOP side, one might expect that Republican reform would have nothing in common with Obamacare.

But there are only so many ways to preserve the patient protections that the ACA offers, which Republicans say they want to keep, while maintaining a private in-

surance market and assisting those who can’t afford coverage.

Like the ACA, the senators’ plan would insist that insurance companies sell policies to people with pre-existing conditions. To keep insurers economically viable despite that demand, the senators, like President Obama, would press all Americans, healthy and sick, to buy coverage.

The mechanism would be not an individual mandate but flexibility for insurance firms to charge unhealthy people more if those people hadn’t maintained coverage continuously. That’s arguably a sharper incentive to get covered than the relatively small fines the individual mandate applies to those lacking insurance.

Poor Americans would get smaller subsidies than the ACA offers to help them buy private coverage, but the senators would let them enroll in cheaper, less comprehensive plans. The senators also propose to “auto-enroll” poor people into plans that would cost no more than the subsidy the government would give them – for free, in other words.

So what’s the problem?

The proposal would push people, particularly the poor, toward much skimpier coverage than the ACA offers.

Since they could trade up when they got sick, people would have an incentive to avoid paying for more comprehensive plans until they needed them.

Those comprehensive plans might well have a less

healthy pool and so would become even more expensive.

The proposal would offset this effect somewhat by lifting restrictions on tax-free health-spending accounts, but that’s not very helpful for people hovering around the poverty line.

In shaping the ACA, Congress set minimum standards so that people would have access to a range of services, such as mental health care, addiction treatment and prenatal care, in decent provider networks. The individual mandate was intended to ensure that the wealthy and the healthy would help to offset the costs of the poor and the sick, and that doing so would be a social expectation. These are worthy goals, whereas the GOP plan falls short.

As a political matter, too, the senators’ plan may be of limited utility.

Democrats wouldn’t agree to displace so much of the ACA, even though the senators’ plan relies on a similar fundamental architecture.

Anti-Obamacare fundamentalists, meanwhile, will probably hate the senators’ plan, precisely because of those similarities.

It’s a lot safer to attack a big law meant to fix big problems than it is to offer an alternative, particularly when the GOP base is so blinkered.

All three senators deserve credit for engaging seriously with health-care policy.

Their proposal falls short, but it contains useful ideas.

It’s also a reminder that any health care reform demands trade-offs.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

REGIONALS BREAKDOWN Best first-round matchup: St. Charles East vs. Willowbrook at Class 4A Batavia Regional, 6 p.m. today. East coach Lori Drumtra is certain the Saints are a far different team than the one that lost to the Warriors by 13 in late December.

Although senior guard Amanda Hilton (knee) is out, the Saints are far more seasoned in the frontcourt, with Hannah Nowling and Chloe John both embracing increased roles. “I’d say our trajectory is upward,” Drumtra said. “And I’ve had teams where at this time of the year, you’re kind of flat-lining and you know the end is near. This team is kind of exciting because I can really tell that I don’t think we’ve played our best basketball, to be honest with you.”

Best potential regional final: Kaneland vs. Sycamore at 3A Plano Regional. This would be the rubber match in what usually is a tense series between the longtime conference rivals. The Knights got the better of the latest turn, upsetting the visiting Spartans, 40-35, on Friday to keep Sycamore from earning a share of the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title. Kaneland would first need to get past the host Reapers, who oustscored the Knights, 10-6, in the fourth quarter to win a Jan. 13 nonconference game, 44-41.

Best bet to win a regional: Burlington Central at 3A Aurora Central Catholic Regional. The top-seeded Rockets (22-4) return most of their core from last season’s supersectional qualifier and have only lost to 4A competition. BC snagged a 4A win for what it hopes is a long postseason road when it defeated Glenbard West to close the regular season.

The regional final will be played at noon Saturday after Monday’s inclement weather pushed the regional schedule back.

Potential dark horse: St. Charles North. Assured of their first winning season since 2009-10, the North Stars play an up-tempo, confident style under first-year coach Sean Masoncup.

Should North defeat Bartlett in its 4A Glenbard East Regional semifinal, this is a group that has the pieces to challenge top seed Wheaton Warrenville South. Look no further than the North Stars’ late-season chops against Batavia.

Claussner a catalyst for upset-seeking Saints

T. CHARLES – Junior point guard Katie Claussner played one of her best games of the season the last time the St. Charles East girls basketball team visited Batavia.

Twenty-two points and a steady floor game helped secure a Feb. 1 upset of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division co-champs, an effort that left injured Saints senior Amanda Hilton repeatedly using the word “stud.”

While the praise from her

mentor flatters Claussner, she’s careful not to bask. The reason: She and the Saints want to keep people talking, and this week’s Class 4A Batavia Regional presents the big opportunity.

“We have confidence now, I think, going into this regional,” Claussner said.

“The last couple games that we’ve won, we’ve been able to push it.”

Saints coach Lori Drumtra fondly remembers one of the first times the 5-foot-5 Claussner provided a spark as a speedy left-handed ballhandler.

It was January 2013, and the Saints were again missing a starter and visiting St. Charles North on a Saturday afternoon.

Claussner scored seven first-half points off the bench in a 59-55 win and took over as a starter in the backcourt soon after. Her pluck was a welcome addition as the Saints challenged eventual champion Geneva for the conference title and advanced to a regional championship game on the Saints’ home floor.

Vaca back for Knights Kaneland sophomore guard Dylan Vaca returned to action Friday against Yorkville and Saturday against Hillcrest after missing more than six weeks with a wrist injury.

Vaca, the Knights’ third-leading scorer when he was injured in a game at the Plano Christmas Classic, scored double figures in both games, scoring 10 points in the win against Yorkville and 12 points in the loss to Hillcrest. Vaca could give

For those who have been searching for the boys basketball postseason draw, relax – you haven’t missed it.

The IHSA this year is releasing postseason seeds later than in the past.

The seeds for Class 3A and Class 4A boys teams are scheduled to come out Thursday, with the pairings and dates to be released Friday.

Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston expressed mixed feelings on the pushed-back timetable compared to the past. Regional play in 3A and 4A will begin the week of March 3.

“I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing,” Ralston said. “I know for teams like us that like to get several scouts in, it shortens our ability to do that, especially when you’re looking at a 23-team sectional and teams that are an hour and a half away from you that you could end up playing.

“It makes the life of a coach that much more difficult, but I know that there probably are coaches out there that would say with this new online system and them being able to generate [the brackets] this quickly, that maybe having [the voting] a week later or a week and a half later or two weeks later is better because it’s maybe more reflective of where the team is at before the state tournament.”

Geneva, 19-5 on the season and owning quality nonconference wins over teams such as Neuqua Valley and Glenbard North, is set up for one of its best seedings in recent memory, although the Vikings are again headed to a highly competitive sectional, hosted by East Aurora.

A projection by Chicago area basketball analyst Joe Henricksen has Geneva slotted as the sixth seed in the 23-team East Aurora Sectional, behind Benet, West Aurora, Hinsdale Central, Naperville Central and Bolingbrook. Batavia (6-16) also is part of the sectional.

Meanwhile, there isn’t as much suspense for the St. Charles schools since they are part of a sectional that is seeded by regional as opposed to the entire sectional. Larkin is a lock to be

More savvy than your average gym rat, Claussner bought her own Baden girls basketball for post-practice shootarounds to keep Drumtra from sweating – and glancing at an open equipment room as she waited to go home.

“Katie Claussner is playing awesome right now,” Drumtra said. “She’s really stepped it up, and she’s scoring for us.”

The Saints needed time to find their rhythm without Hilton, a four-year varsity player and Nebraska soccer recruit who has been sidelined with a fractured kneecap since midseason.

Off the court, Claussner still has relied on Hilton’s input at practice or during halftime.

“She just gives me advice all the time,” Claussner said.

“She’s always picking me up and telling me what to do. It’s always what I can do differently, what I’m doing well.”

On the court, longtime col-

laborator Kyra Washington, a junior wing, remains dialed in with Claussner.

Both players still recall their first encounter, the time in second grade when Claussner asked Washington if she wanted to be part of a recess football game. The pair hasn’t lost a pulse on one another’s whereabouts since.

“We were like best friends right at that moment,” Washington said.

A few years later, classmates started calling Claussner and the 6-1 Washington “Rob and Big,” a nod to the short and tall MTV reality show pals.

The Saints, 13-13 during the regular season, know they will need some sizable contributions to advance this week. Tonight’s semifinal against Willowbrook – a team that defeated East in Wheaton North holiday tournament play – awaits before a possible rubber match with regional favorite Batavia, which defeated East in the teams’ first regular season meeting.

A quick glance at Claussner shows the Saints are game.

“Katie has stepped up, for sure,” Washington said.

“We’ve had some other people step up, too, which is really good. That’s what we need.

I’m just hoping we can keep that up.”

Under their best-laid plans, Kane County Chronicle-area wrestlers will be hanging around the arena floor of the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center for a while this weekend.

No longer known as Assembly Hall, the venue nonetheless remains host of the IHSA state wrestling tournament.

Here’s an early look at some of the athletes who are Champaign-bound, with more to come as the week progresses. Preliminary matches begin Thursday night. Finals are set to start after 7 p.m. Saturday.

• Speaking of best-laid plans, Kaneland coach Monty Jahns had about the greatest farewell possible in hand in February 2013.

Jahns watched Knights senior 145-pounder Dan Goress win a Class 2A title, then announced his resignation from his alma mater at the team banquet a few weeks later.

Complications with his would-be successor eventually steered Jahns back to the mat room, and he has since called this season his new swan song. Can 285-pounder Justin Diddell captain another remarkable state run?

Jahns certainly sees promise in the 32-9 senior, an Indiana State football recruit.

“For a three-year wrestler to get where he’s at today, a lot of that has to do with his work ethic in the weight room and the football field,” Jahns said. “He’s translated over to wrestling pretty well.”

Diddell speaks routinely about using his strength to defeat more experienced wrestlers. His resolve has been evident throughout the entire team this season, including at Saturday’s Plano Sectional, when a handful of teammates knocked on the

Bring on Byron: The Aurora Christian girls basketball team edged top-seeded Seneca to win the 2A Ottawa Marquette Regional final last week. Tonight, the 15-13 Eagles brace for another tough test against Byron in an Aurora Christian Sectional semifinal.

The Tigers, 44-43 winners against Rockford Christian in the Stillman Valley Regional title game, were a supersectional qualifier last season.

“They’ve got most of their girls back and look like they’re coming out of a tough regional too,” Tokars said. “We’re going to be major underdogs in our own sectional, but you know what, that’s all right with me, because we’re at our own dinner table.

“Should be fun.”

MAPLE PARK – Boys basketball fans were treated to two games where the winner’s final score reached the 80s on Saturday at Kaneland’s inaugural Day and Knight of Hoops.

St. Charles North opened the varsity segment of the event with an 87-66 victory against Peoria Richwoods while Kaneland dropped the closing game, 81-60, to Hillcrest.

In between was a 79-76 Larkin victory against North Chicago.

The opening outburst – North’s highest score of the season – was especially gratifying to North Stars coach Tom Poulin.

“I can’t remember the last time we ever scored 87. I’ll have to look,” Poulin said.

“We played Mundelein at Jacobs once and that was in the 90s. That’s the last game I remember.”

In the nightcap, Kaneland (13-8) scored the first basket of its game against Hillcrest (17-6) on a John Pruett jumper. The Knights held the lead for the first five minutes of the first quarter until a George McDaniel free throw tied the score at 10-all with three minutes left in the quarter. The Hawks finished the quarter with a 7-2 run to lead, 17-12.

The Knights pulled within two points late in the second quarter on a Dylan Vaca layup, his first two of 12 points. However, Hillcrest responded with another run to hold a 39-31 advantage at halftime.

The Hawks, with 6-foot-8 Taylor Adway and 6-5 DeAngleo Isby, used their height advantage to control the boards. Hillcrest outrebounded Kaneland, 34-20. Isby led all scorers with 22 points while Adway contributed 14.

Pruett was the top Kaneland scorer with 19 points. Ty Carlson chipped in 13.

St. Charles East snaps skid at Batavia’s expense Adduci leads Saints with 23 points

By TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – After suffering three straight losses at the hands of Larkin, Geneva and Naperville North, the St. Charles East boys basketball team needed a win to get back on track before regionals.

“We were a little angry and we had a chip on our shoulders after those last games,” St. Charles East senior guard Dom Adduci said.

The Saints responded in

Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division road game at Batavia, playing fast, forcing 17 turnovers and earning a 59-52 win.

Adduci led the Saints with 23 points, six rebounds and five assists.

“I think the team played really well today. We came out with a lot of energy,” Adduci said. “This was playoff-style basketball tonight.

Every possession was challenged. And [that] is exactly what we are looking for in games this late in the year, and we responded really well.”

East (13-11, 7-4 UEC River) forced most of its turnovers with its press. Saints coach Pat Woods was pleased with his team’s intensity and how they forced turnovers and quick shots.

“[Quick shots] is what we were hoping for,” Woods said. “That is what it is designed to do – speed them up.

It is a little bit of a gamble in a sense, but I don’t think we would do that if we didn’t know the gamble would pay off.”

The game was close early, but three straight 3s from Adduci, Cole Gentry and Mick Vyzral pushed the Saints lead out to 11 points midway through the second quarter. Batavia closed the gap to two by halftime after three straight buckets from Tucker Knox capped 9-0 run.

East come out firing in the second half, opening the third quarter on a 10-0 run, finished off by a three-point play by Adduci.

“We talked about at half that the first four minutes

would be critical as far as setting the tone,” Woods said.

“This is the kind of team that if you give them momentum, especially in the second half, they are going to build confidence from that.”

Batavia (6-16, 1-10) chipped away and eventually closed the gap to three points in the fourth quarter.

After a Saints timeout, AJ Washington finished a bucket and a foul for East to restore the lead at six points.

“That was a designed play to get A.J. on a cut for a layup or a dunk. And he got an and-1, so that was what we were looking for,” Woods said.

The Bulldogs never closed the gap to more than four again.

Although his team shot 19 of 42 (45.2 percent) from

the field, Batavia coach Jim Nazos said his team missed some close ones.

“That is going to happen in games. We are going to get good looks and we are going to miss some and that is part of it,” Nazos said. “We are an improved team and that means something on some level. But, we want the next step and we want to finish.”

Knox led Batavia with 17 points and five rebounds.

Micah Coffey chipped in with 15 points.

For East, Gentry scored 13 points with six rebounds and three assists. Washington and Jake Asquini each finished with seven points.

“I think the team played really well today,” Adduci said. “We came out with a lot of intensity. That was our big thing – intensity.”

Jimenez opened the tournament with a pin of St. Rita junior Valentino Ortiz in 2:35.

He defeated Marist senior Mike Mullaney in the semifi-

nals, 11-4, then won the championship match by recording a technical fall against Sandburg sophomore Christian Robertson in 5:45. Jimenez scored 15 unanswered points in the match.

With the sectional hurdle cleared, Jimenez said he heads to state feeling relaxed.

Marmion sophomore Nathan Traxler (32-8) dropped a 2-1 decision to Marist junior Alex Benoit in the 182-pound championship match. Traxler edged Mt. Carmel senior Jimmy Mickens in the semifinals, 3-2.

Traxler still will advance to state along with Anthony Bosco, A.J. Jaffe, Trace Carello, Sam Breen, and Lucas Warren.

McKeehan (27-7) reached the sectional finals in trademark fashion by getting out of a couple tough spots against Waubonsie Valley senior Anthony Napolitano and rallying for a 9-5 victory.

“Going into the match, I knew I was in better shape,” McKeehan said. “For me, that’s something I take advantage of. I know if I can’t pin a kid in the first period – and obviously I can’t do that to him, he’s a very good wrestler – but I knew that I could outlast him. I could beat him in the third period.”

HINSDALE – Three-time state wrestling champion Johnny Jimenez entered this weekend as the obvious favorite to win the 126-pound title at the Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional, but the Marmion senior from St. Charles wasn’t thinking about his quest for a fourth state title.

“Not today, but starting with the regional, I focused more on winning every period,” Jimenez said Saturday after winning a sectional championship. “So I’m trying to go one match at a time.

I’m not really focusing on the fourth state championship at this moment. Right now I’m focusing on getting through this period, getting through this match, getting through this tournament.”

Jimenez (38-3) did just that, and will lead a contingent of nine Cadets into next weekend’s state tournament at the

Also feeling good after winning sectional titles for the Cadets were Nick Ferraro and Josh Meyers.

Meyers (33-7) rallied from a 4-2 deficit entering the third period of his championship match with Naperville North senior Ben Brancaleon to win a 9-6 decision.

“Usually, I go through the first two periods and just hand fight because I’m a lot smaller than these kids,” Meyers said.

“If I go out right off the bat and try to take them down, they’re just going to overpower me.

So I just hand fight, hand fight, and then when they get tired, I attack.”

The Huskies set a school record with 12 wins, became the first MAC school to defeat two Big Ten teams in one regular season, won their fourth consecutive MAC West title and went into the MAC Championship with another BCS berth in their sights.

However, NIU suffered a 47-27 loss to Bowling Green in Detroit, and ended the season with its second consecutive loss, a 21-14 defeat against Utah State, in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Jordan Lynch was also selected as a Heisman Trophy finalist, becoming the first Huskie to be honored in New York City.

Rod Carey’s first season as NIU’s coach was certainly eventful. Last week, Carey sat down with Shaw Media to discuss the 2013 campaign. The following is an edited transcript.

Shaw Media: Overall, looking back on it, how do you feel about the season? What grade would you give it as a whole?

Carey: I think if you and I were sitting here talking in August, and you could have guaranteed me 12-2, I probably wouldn’t have even asked what two games we were going to lose, and said ‘Let’s go, let’s do it.’ And so I think when you look at it through that lens, I think it’s historic and a great season at NIU. Really pleased with how the whole thing went.

SM: What do you think the main reason was for the last two losses, if you could pinpoint a couple things?

Carey: I don’t think you can lump those two [games] into the same category. And I’ve always believed this, too.

If you lose and you sit there and you say, ‘Listen, we lost because we did this and we lost because we didn’t do this, and we lost because of those reasons,’ really, what you’re doing, is disrespecting your opponent.

BG beat us. Did we have some things we didn’t do well in that game? You bet. But BG came out and played really well and I’ll give them a ton of credit, just like I did after the game. And I’ve watched that game I don’t know, 50 or 60 times now and broken it down every which way. And, sure, there’s some technical things in there that we need to do better, you bet.

But we coached, and we played as hard as we did when we won 12 in a row, and you’ve got to tip your hat to BG, they beat us.

Now Utah State, it’s really easy. Turnovers, you can’t turn the ball over and beat a good team like that. Our defense played good enough to win that night. Our offense, plain and simple, turned the ball over. We had an opportunity, in the first half of that game, where we could have been up two scores, maybe three. But we turned the ball over, didn’t hurt us, and the second half we did turn it over, one last time, and that hurt us.

I think they’re two different losses. I think you can find a lot of different ways to lose and a lot of different ways to win. Fortunately we found 12 different ways to win and only two different ways to lose.

SM: Next season, there’s going to be high expectations.

What are your expectations and how do you handle those?

How do you get the players to handle those?

Carey: You don’t have to handle expectations when they’re yours, because you made them up. If you’re talking about outside expectations, we can’t control those.

Our expectations are plain and simple, and it’s very neat and tidy.

We expect to be in the mix for the MAC title every year, and if we’re doing that, we’re where we want to be.

It doesn’t mean that we don’t worry about anything else, you want to win every game you have. That’s everybody.

Those are the expectations that we have.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Presidents’ Day this year is Feb. 17. It’s set by law as the third Monday of February. But it’s officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government.

George Washington’s Birthday, a national holiday, used to be celebrated on Feb. 22. Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was Feb. 12 and was not a federal holiday. Washington’s Birthday celebration was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to add more three-day weekends to the annual calendar. The holiday was not officially renamed Presidents’ Day because Congress could not agree on changing the name, but the day was said to also honor Lincoln and other presidents. While some states still celebrate individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln, most states stick with Presidents’ Day even though that’s not the holiday’s legal name. For many people, the holiday becomes a day off work and one with great sales, especially of new cars. While there are virtually no souvenirs of Presidents’ Day, there are many pictures, pieces of pottery, textiles, pieces of furniture, medals, coins, signs and other advertising, sheet music, toys and much more to collect if the memory of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln is your focus. *** Q: I have two birthday greeting notes mailed to my father-inlaw by President Dwight Eisenhower. They shared the same birthday, Oct. 14. I have one of the franked envelopes the greeting was mailed in, too. The envelope, postmarked Oct. 17, 1967, was mailed from Gettysburg, Pa. Do the greetings have any monetary value? What bothers me is that the Eisenhower signatures on the notes are identical.

A: President Eisenhower sometimes used an autopen to sign his name before, during and after his presidency (19531961). If you have two signatures exactly alike, they were no doubt signed by autopen. After Ike left Washington, D.C., he retired to a farm in Gettysburg. If the note with the franked envelope had

Eisenhower’s real signature, it could be worth more than $400.

A note signed by autopen is a nice family souvenir. *** Q: We have a wooden filing cabinet that has a flat work surface with two cupboard doors below and drawers above. There are 15 small drawers over six larger drawers with brass plates for labels and a horizontal glass door on top. There is a brass plate on top that says “Yawman & Erbe Mfg. Co., Rochester, N.Y.” The drawer pulls have a logo with “Y and E” on them. Can you give me an idea of the value of this piece?

A: Philip H. Yawman and Gustav Erbe started working in partnership in 1880. At first they made microscopes, but they soon began manufacturing specialty equipment for other companies.

In 1898 they began making and selling office equipment under the name Yawman & Erbe Manufacturing Co. The company held several patents for filing systems and other office equipment and was one of the largest producers of office furniture and equipment in the world in the early 1900s. Your filing cabinet would sell for $500 to $800. *** Q: While cleaning out a storage area in the home where my husband and his brothers were raised, we found a box of old board games dating back to the 1930s and early ‘40s. Most are in good shape with all of their pieces. We wonder if they have any value. The games include Monopoly, Dog Race, Touring Auto, Game of Football and Baseball, and some card games like Pit and

Real ‘Monument Women’ restore artifacts, optimism

By KATHERINE BOYLE The Washington Post Laura Tedesco hasn’t seen the film yet. But the State Department’s “Monument Woman” knows exactly what she would do if rockets rained down on the National Museum of Afghanistan.

“If I were at the museum and it were being rocketed, you better believe I’d be like, “Wait! I’ll get the Kanishka, you get the Buddha!’” Tedesco said. “All the other people at the museum would say the same thing.”

“The Monuments Men” is a love letter to the Laura Tedescos of yesteryear, featuring perfectly-honed talking points about the importance of preserving world cultures.

But Tedesco’s work at the State Department illustrates the modern saga that accompanies preserving culture during a prolonged and complicated war.

Tedesco, 44, is a cultural heritage program manager, the bureaucratic title for an archeologist tasked with identifying ancient Afghan sites in need of restoration. And she’s not alone in her work. While State invests in restoring ancient sites around Afghanistan as a tenet of the agency’s public diplomacy mission, the Department of Defense employs archeologists to teach soldiers how to avoid destroying them.

For archeologists, these jobs are rich and rewarding missions, but the modern story of cultural preservation during war is far less glamorous than George Clooney’s dramatization of events during World War II. Brave curators in “The Monuments Men” save Renaissance paintings from Nazis, but the State Department now must pick and choose between countless ancient sites that have weathered civil war, extremism and neglect. Although the

“Monuments Men” got their Hollywood ending, archeologists in Afghanistan know they’re confronting a different enemy, one that doesn’t need an army of uniformed soldiers to cause monumental damage to culture. And as U.S. combat troops withdraw from the country this year, dangerous preservation work will continue in volatile regions such as Kandahar and Ghazni. Although some worry that ancient sites there will be destroyed after U.S. troop withdrawal, fear doesn’t preoccupy Tedesco.

“I can’t predict whether the Taliban will come and mess this up,” she says of sites the State Department has successfully restored since she arrived, in 2010. “But if we don’t do something because we’re afraid they might destroy things, then why are we here?

I might as well go home.”

Tedesco was at a deli in Charleston, S.C., when she received the first call.

“It was someone from the Department of State, and they asked, ‘Can you be on an interview in 30 minutes?’” she says.

Months earlier, she had fired off a resume through

USA Jobs to be the embassy’s archeologist and assumed it “went into the ether.” But after a few interviews, she got another call. The job was hers if she could be in Kabul in two weeks. She dropped everything and moved to Afghanistan for 16 months.

For Tedesco, an archeologist who fell in love with the region during graduate school, it was an unparalleled career opportunity. Before Afghanistan, she was employed by corporations seeking to avoid constructing buildings on sensitive sites in South Carolina.

“I wasn’t too thrilled with that job,” she said.

So, the then-40-year-old mother of two young children prepared for a position that had always been out of reach, a mission to protect ancient sites she had never seen up close. She had never worked in a war zone, but she took to the work quickly, meeting with village elders and Afghan partner groups to identify important cultural sites. Much of the job began with “drinking a lot of tea and smoking a lot of cigarettes,” she says, listening to locals

discuss their needs.

“I once asked an Afghan man from Bamian about the destruction of the Buddhas,” she said of the 6th-century statues the Taliban blew up with dynamite in 2001. “He teared up when I asked ... it shocked him to his core.

It shocked Afghans and the world.”

After Tedesco’s listening tour, she helped choose and manage the sites that the State Department has invested in. Over 12 years, the department has invested $15 million in archeological and cultural preservation in Afghanistan, funding projects alongside international partners, including the German government and private foundations. One of its large-scale projects was the restoration of the Herat Citadel, an impressive monument that dates to 330 B.C. Over five years, the U.S. invested $1.2 million to restore a site the size of a football stadium.

“The governor of Herat said that it was one of the most important things the Americans had done for the city,” Tedesco said. “It’s a world monument.”

“This is such an important tool of foreign policy,” says Evan Ryan, assistant secretary of state for Educational and Cultural Affairs.

“The U.S. is playing a part in protecting another country’s cultural identity, and in Afghanistan, preserving cultural identity helps to counter violent extremism.”

Going forward, Tedesco says she’s uncertain how much the federal government will invest. But she is certain work will continue.

“The projects we’re engaged in are multiyear projects,” she says. “They know we’re in it for the long haul.

You can’t go in and shore up a falling-down minaret and then say, ‘Alright, now we’re out of here!’”

Dad who defers to son sends wrong message Dear Abby: You were wrong to advise “Starting Anew in Ohio” (in a previous column), the mother of a 10-year-old girl who wanted the bigger bedroom in their new house, to have her kids draw straws. When the girl made the request, her older brother said he didn’t care. The time to have drawn straws was when the girl first made the request, not two months afterward.

The girl is at an age when children can be particularly sensitive about trust issues, and the boy is old enough to know that words have consequences. If the parents reverse course now, the girl will learn that her parents’ promises mean nothing, and the boy will learn that he doesn’t have to worry about what he says because he can always change it later.

These are not good lessons to teach children. That the father would bow to the boy’s request made the situation worse. Maybe he’d think twice if he realized his daughter will now always doubt his word. – Judy In Ohio Dear Judy: You are not the only reader who told me my answer

Genes aren’t necessarily predictors of Alzheimer’s disease Dear Doctor K: Alzheimer’s runs in my family. Will it help to get gene testing for this disease?

Dear Reader: Family history is indeed a risk factor for Alzheimer’s. If you have a parent or sibling with Alzheimer’s, you’re more likely to develop the disease than someone who does not have a close relative with this condition.

Genetics is most important in families with a history of early-onset Alzheimer’s (occurring between ages 30 and 60). The early-onset form accounts for less than 1 percent of all Alzheimer’s cases, but in most people with early-onset disease, the cause is one of several altered, or mutated, genes that the person has inherited from a parent.

Several genes responsible for early-onset Alzheimer’s have been identified. They are called APP, PSEN1 and PSEN2. If someone inherits one of these mutated genes, it is very likely (but not certain) he or she will develop the disease.

Testing for these genes is costly and is not usually covered by insurance. At this time, there is no treatment proven to prevent or slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. However, some people

If one of my parents had developed early-onset Alzheimer’s, I would have wanted to know if I had inherited the gene. If so, I might have planned my career and my non-professional life differently. Fortunately, my parents did not develop this disease.

You also may choose to be tested. For you, like me, perhaps bad news is better than living with uncertainty. Or you may want the opportunity to enroll in trials for experimental treatments.

Everything I’ve said so far applies only to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Most cases of the disease start after age 60.

We know of just one gene that is a reasonably strong predictor of this more typical form of Alzheimer’s: APOE. People who inherit two copies of the APOE4 type of the APOE gene are at much higher risk for developing Alz-

heimer’s compared with people who have no copies of the gene.

However, most authorities do not recommend getting tested for the APOE4 gene. That’s because the gene does not provide a solid answer. If you inherit two copies of the gene, you may still avoid Alzheimer’s. And if you inherit no copies, you may still get it.

Nevertheless, some people want to know if they are at increased risk. I have not had myself tested for this gene.

Human genetics has developed enormously in the past 30 years.

In the 1980s, few scientists imagined that we would discover the structure of every human gene in their lifetime, or even their children’s lifetime. But we have. And we have identified thousands of genes that are linked to particular diseases.

However, this information has not yet led to many highly accurate predictions of what diseases a person is at high risk for, or to many cures. In tomorrow’s column, I’ll explain why.

Teens need, deserve privacy Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend is in his first year at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

We have been dating for three years. We correspond mainly by letters.

Lately, my mother has been opening his letters for me. I have no idea why she is doing this. I have given her no reason whatsoever to censor my mail.

When I asked her why she opened mail addressed to me, she got huffy and said that she was my mother and could do anything she wanted concerning me.

Having her open my letters makes me feel violated. I now have my boyfriend’s letters sent in care of my girlfriend who delivers them to me.

I think my mother was making a huge mistake when my mail was coming to my house. I’m sure that you will agree.

Mom has stopped talking to me since I told her the letters are now sent to a friend’s house. – Nameless, Milwaukee, Wis. Dear Nameless: Teens need and deserve privacy, and wise parents will honor it unless it’s abused. Young people grow to maturity when their rights are respected. This includes the right to open their personal mail!

A parent has no reason to snoop unless the teen’s behavior is such that parental investigation is necessary for the teen’s safety and welfare.

Violating a teen’s privacy just because, “I’m the mother,” is a power trip and should stop. It will only damage a parent-teen relationship.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-year-old girl who has an average IQ (I’ve been tested three times with the same result) but I study hard because I want to go to college.

My 17-year-old brother is just the opposite. He has been in the honors program since elementary school. Studies

Over the last seven columns, I have been stressing counting, primarily by the defenders. Here is one more example, by way of revision because someone once told me that repetition is good in a teaching environment. (I hope he is right.)

South zooms into four hearts.

West leads the spade queen. How should the declarer-play and defense go?

Note that three no-trump has no chance. That is usually a tough contract to make when you have two or three aces to dislodge. The defenders have a lot of time to establish and run their long suit.

In four hearts, South starts with four losers: one in each suit.

He has 10 possible tricks: two spades, four hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. However, he will get those two club tricks only if East errs, since declarer has no dummy entry outside clubs.

South’s best chance is to win trick one with the spade ace and play a club, hoping the opponent with the ace wins immediately.

West, though, should play his eight, starting a high-low with an even number. East should then work out that declarer started with two clubs. (With four, South would not be attacking clubs this quickly; he would surely be drawing trumps.) So, East should duck the first club, take the second, and return a spade to kill the contract.
