‘Ashes to Go’ will return to Geneva Metra station

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A priest and five members of St. Charles Episcopal Church plan to provide the imposition of ashes to commuters at the Geneva Metra station on Ash Wednesday – Feb. 18 – the first day of Lent in the Christian calendar.

The Rev. Bill Nesbit said this is the fifth year the church will provide “Ashes to Go” to commuters during the morning rush.

Ashes will be provided from 6:20 to 7:50 a.m. at the Geneva Metra station, 328 Crescent Place, Geneva.

Nesbit said his church got the idea from three Episcopal churches in Chicago that started “Ashes to Go” in 2010.

Lent is considered a period of penitence and reflection, and a time to prepare for Easter, Nesbit said.

He said ashes and a prayer are given to anyone who wants them.

“There are no restrictions,” Nesbit said. “We get all sorts – Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists. Some people say, ‘What

Nesbit said Ash Wednesday is an important day to remember mortality.

“It’s important that we remember [our mortality] because it gives urgency to our mission to reconcile ourselves to God and to each other,” Nesbit said.

The ashes that will be used were made from burned fronds from the previous year’s Palm Sunday, he said.

“Ashes are a powerful symbol of our limited nature, a symbol that all that we do comes to ash in the end – yet God continues,” Nesbit said. “But they are also an ancient symbol of penitence. ‘Forgive me for what I have done.’ ... It’s recognition that we have fallen short of the dream that God has for us – and that it’s not too late.”

Nesbit and church members who are participating also might have to deal with sub-zero temperatures that are predicted for Wednesday.

“Well, the low is minus 7 and the high is 7,” Nesbit said. “Hand-warmers – I have a case of them.”

St. Charles aldermen to review updated plan for First Street

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee on Tuesday will review an updated proposal for the ongoing downtown development of First Street.

The Planning and Development Committee is likely to vote to make a recommendation on a PUD preliminary plan, as well as a redevelopment agreement with First Street Development II LLC. The recommendations are for the proposed third phase of the First Street Redevelopment project. The proposed site plan includes three mixed-use buildings and a parking deck, according to the city’s executive summary of the recommendations.

The plan covers the portion of the site located south of the planned East Plaza and north of Illinois Street.

The Historic Preservation Commission in November reviewed and unanimously recommended approval of the PUD, also known as planned unit development, preliminary plan. Commission members noted a number of positive design features associated with the new proposal when compared to the previous plan in 2008, according to the executive summary.

The Plan Commission in December reviewed and unanimously recommended approval of the plan, but with conditions attached. Those included future plan approval for the architectural elevations proposed for the third building in the project, streetscape improvements along First and Illinois streets, and East Plaza and Riverwalk improvements.

The Planning and Development Committee’s meeting will begin after the regular St. Charles City Council meeting concludes Tuesday. The regular council meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

STC Park District plans referendum open house KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Voters wanting to know more about the St. Charles Park District’s $28 million referendum may attend an informational open house next week, the park district announced Monday in a release.

The park district is seeking voter support to borrow $28 million in bonds for a new recreation center at James O. Breen Community Park, land acquisition and improvements to athletic facilities.

“Residents are welcome to drop in during the informal open houses to ask questions and view architectural renderings for the Family Recreation Center designed for multi-generational use and includes a fitness center, four gymnasiums, an elevated indoor track and preschool rooms,” Director Holly Cabel said in a statement.

FOILED SHOOTING PLOT Genevan faces conspiracy to commit murder charge

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Geneva woman charged in a foiled Valentine’s Day shooting plot is expected to appear in a Canadian courtroom this morning.

Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath, 23, and Randall Steven Shepherd, 20, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, each face a charge of conspiracy to commit murder, according to a news release issued Saturday

by Canadian police.

They are expected in Halifax Provincial Court today.

Investigators with the Geneva Police Department, which on Friday executed a search warrant locally for Canadian authorities, were planning to reach out to those Lindsay a u t h o r i t i e s Kantha today to see Souvannarath whether they need further assistance, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said Monday.

Although Souvannarath is from Geneva, Geneva police have said there is no threat here.

“It does seem to be an incident isolated to Canada,” Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said Saturday. “[There is] no threat to this area at all.”

Michael Sunderman, who was in Geneva High School’s Class of 2010 with Souvannarath, described his former classmate as a lonely person who would talk about Nazis and Adolf Hitler but would become uncomfortable and change topics when confronted about her beliefs.

“She had a macabre and dark sense of humor to her, but at the time it never seemed violent,” Sunderman said.

Sunderman said Souvannarath came to mind even before authorities released the identifies of those connected to the foiled shooting at a Canadian shopping center.

“Of anyone I know, it sounds like her,” he said, noting his contact with her was limited to social media after high school. “[I am] so thankful the authorities caught her.”

There were no updates about the case Monday, said Sgt. Alain LeBlanc, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police provincial media relations officer.

Police in Canada release “very little” information to the media during ongoing investigations as to not jeopardize the case, he said.

In Saturday’s news release, Canadian authorities reported a third individual, a 17-year-old male from Cole Harbour, had been released without charge. Police described him as a person of interest but reported there was no evidence to link him to charges.

A fourth person, a 19-yearold man, was found dead at a Timberlea residence, where authorities seized three long-barrel rifles, Canadian police said at a news conference Saturday.

When asked whether that man committed suicide, LeBlanc said in an email that “he was found deceased inside the home.”

Timberlea is a community within the province of Nova Scotia.

Canadian authorities described the individuals as friends who decided to plan and commit a “heinous” crime for reasons not immediately known. Police were not defining them as a terrorist group because their plans didn’t have ethnic or political considerations, they said.

Passarelli said items were taken from the Geneva home, but – at the request of the Canadian authorities – he would not specify what was seized.

It is an ongoing investigation, he added.

Nash confirmed Monday that the residence was in the 3300 block of Husking Peg Lane in Geneva.

Passarelli said Souvannarath and her family, who have been “extremely cooperative,” were unknown to local police.

“We’ve had no contact with her, whatsoever,” Passarelli said.

According to Geneva High School yearbooks, Souvannarath was involved in the fall play, “The Rimers of Eldritch,” her junior year, and in the RPG Club throughout high school. RPG stands for roll-playing game.

Souvannarath continued her education at Coe College in Iowa. Rod Pritchard, direc-

tor of marketing and public relations, wrote in an email that she enrolled in the 2010 fall term and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She double majored in English and creative writing, he wrote.

According to public records, Souvannarath’s family bought the house on Husking Peg Lane in the Fisher Farms neighborhood in August 2006.

A member of the Schooley family in Geneva on Sunday confirmed that he was a neighbor of the Souvannaraths and that members of his family were interviewed by other media outlets on Saturday.

He declined to give his first name but said news of the plot in Canada was surprising and shocking.

The Schooleys said they would see Souvannarath at neighborhood events, and she seemed like a normal teenage girl that went through different phases and interests.

Canadian authorities said it is too early to know whether Souvannarath will be extradited to the United States.

They said she was entering Canada upon her arrest.

“RCMP and HRP have laid charges in this incident and have eliminated the threat,” Chief Jean-Michel Blais of Halifax Regional Police said in a statement. “This is a reminder that this type of incident can happen anywhere.”

“Gluten-free – it was a pretty large demand from our customers,” Keivel said.

It’s missing the gluten protein. … It tastes so good you would never know it’s gluten-free.”

The bakery, which has been in business for two years as of December, also offers egg-free and dairy-free desserts. Those recipes use vegan shortening and applesauce.

GENEVA – A new company, 25N Coworking, will host a grand opening Thursday to present its new business and redeveloped location at 25 N. Third St. in Geneva.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled at 4 p.m., followed by a grand opening party from 5 to 8 p.m., which is open to the public, said Meagan Schoenrock, community manager for the business.

The coworking concept provides a professional environment for virtual employees, freelance workers and entrepreneurs to work, have meetings and network, officials said.

“We are very excited to show off our space and give the whole town a tour,” said Schoenrock. “We have signed up 60 people, and we were hoping for about 20, so we are very excited.”

Schoenrock said the goal is to have 200 members.

Ashland Ventures LLC Chairman Paul Kawalek said in a statement that the

building – which started as a supermarket and then was a bank – has been “transformed into a technologically sophisticated and environmentally friendly setting for 21st century work environments.”

The building’s redevelopment involved installing energy-efficient heating, cooling and LED lighting systems, as well as adding state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression and building security, according to the company’s statement.

It also has fiber-optic, high-speed Internet transmission, wireless communication and data security, according to Kawalek’s statement.

Occupying 10,000 square feet on the first floor, 25N Coworking is the anchor tenant in the 20,000-square-foot building, Kawalek said.

“This is a very attractive location,” Kawalek said late last year when the project was first announced. “It is also an area underserved for this industry, which is growing at an incredibly rapid pace.”

“Our concept is unique, as we are also a co-op bakery where independent businesses are allowed to rent out the commercial kitchen and have started their own business right out of my bakery,” Keivel said.

Midwest Warehouse will be the sole tenant and will lease the entire 604,565-square-foot building, according to a news

release from The Opus Group.

“We’re extremely pleased to have secured this long-term lease and look forward to working with Midwest Warehouse to customize this large bulk space to meet their business needs,” said Mike Yungerman, vice president of real estate development for Opus Development Company LLC, in the release. “We’ve seen a significant decrease in industrial vacancies in the region and are proud to help fill that

Batavia aldermen approve $13,500 matching downtown improvement grant

press at 70 S. Island Ave., Batavia.

Aldermen voted unanimously to give the grant to Alex Partnership LLC, which owns the shopping center that houses both restaurants. The project, which also involved installing new floor drains along with related underground plumbing improvements, cost Alex Partnership $27,000.

The project involved replacing an existing, undersized and faulty grease trap with a new 55-gallon, code-compliant trap.

According to a memo from Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston, the previous grease trap wasn’t able to adequately handle grease refuse from the restaurant’s kitchen operations, and the grease periodically entered

the city’s sewer system.

Aliano’s Express – the restaurant’s carryout, delivery and catering business – opened in January. Batavia aldermen in March 2014 approved giving Aliano’s Ristorante a $25,000 tax increment financing grant and a $75,000 low-interest loan so Aliano’s could reconfigure its kitchen and expand its business.

The project was expected to cost $208,000, which included about $108,250 for the expansion and $99,750 to buy equipment and for other expenses.

Aliano’s opened in December 2011. Tax increment financing is a tool that allows municipalities to earmark property tax revenues from increases in assessed values within a designated TIF district.

For the first time, the agencies have partnered to provide a joint citizens police academy, which will meet Wednesday nights from March 11 to May 13.

“It’s just a great way we can let the community in to see what we do and how we do it,” sheriff’s office Lt. Pat Gengler said.

“It’s definitely not like it is on TV.” Participants will be introduced to topics, such as traffic laws, crime prevention, identity theft, scams and fraud, patrol, investigations, corrections and gang identification, according to a news release.

Gengler said sessions will be at the park district’s Prisco Community Center, as well as the sheriff’s office.

Previous sessions offered by the sheriff’s office have included mock traffic stops, jail tours and ride-alongs, Gengler said, noting organizers recognize classroom environments

can be tedious.

The sheriff’s office started hosting its own academy when its St. Charles Township facility opened, Gengler said. He expects the partnership with the Fox Valley Park District will help the program reach more people, he said.

Additionally, he said, it should show the public how much the two agencies work with each other.

Andersson and Wheeler were involved in a friendly competition as they participated Monday in the Kane County Farm Bureau’s 14th annual Food Check-Out Challenge Shopping Spree. This is the 14th year that the Batavia Jewel-Osco store has participated in the event.

Andersson was shopping for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, and Wheeler was shopping for the Elburn Food Pantry. They were given five minutes to collect as much nonperishable food as they could.

As time elapsed, they were given another minute to collect more groceries. All the food

Fire damages Batavia garage

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage Monday afternoon to a detached two-car garage in the 1100 block of South Batavia Avenue.

No one was injured in the fire, which is still under investigation, said Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker.

“The garage is a total loss,” Banker said. “There was an estimated $30,000 in damage to the structure and contents. Most of it was burned beyond recognition.”

There were no cars parked in the garage at the time of the fire, Banker said. A car parked next to the garage in a lean-to sustained no damage, he said.

When Batavia firefighters arrived on the scene at 1:32 p.m., the garage was fully engulfed in flames, Banker said.

“We had most of the fire knocked down in 15 to 20 minutes,” Banker said.

Batavia was assisted on the scene by the Geneva Fire Department, the Batavia Police Department and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Rising copays are barriers to care, not spur to efficiency BLOOMBERG NEWS Obamacare’s goal to expand access to health care has been only half a success: More Americans have insurance, but a rise in cost sharing means fewer can use it. Copayments – those predetermined charges you pay at the doctor’s office – are a big part of the problem. In recent years, they’ve risen to the point where they no longer work as they’re meant to.

In theory, charging moderate fees to see a doctor or get a procedure gives people an incentive to consider whether they really need it. Done carefully, copays can thus reduce unnecessary spending, benefiting everyone.

That means the charges have to be just large enough

to influence people’s decisions, and not so big as to keep people from getting the care they need. Yet copays have been going up significantly. In the past five years, the average price to see a primary care doctor has risen 20 percent. For a specialist it’s gone up 29 percent, and for outpatient surgery it’s up 43 percent. And that’s just for employer-sponsored insurance; on average, those covered through the Affordable Care Act’s exchanges face even higher expenses.

No wonder 22 percent of people now say the cost of getting care has led them to delay treatment for a serious condition. That’s the highest percentage since Gallup started asking in 2001.

The wisdom of copayments

also relies on the notion that consumers understand the incentives the payments are supposed to impose. Yet almost two-thirds of Americans don’t know what costs they face for using an emergency room or a walk-in clinic, a recent survey found.

When copayments grow too big and confusing to be effective cost controls, they merely shift an ever-greater share of insurance costs away from premiums. And this undermines the basic purpose of insurance.

Obamacare has begun to solve the problem by banning copayments on preventive care, such as immunizations, annual wellness visits and screenings for various diseases. The law also imposes a cap on annual out-of-pocket

payments (that includes both copays and deductibles, which are also rising and discouraging people from getting needed care), though at a level so high – $6,600 this year for an individual, $13,200 for a family plan – that few people benefit from it.

And the law subsidizes copayments and deductibles for people earning between 100 percent and 250 percent of the poverty line. For people who get their health insurance through work, however, no such protections exist.

There’s precedent for going further still: Canada has disposed of almost all out-of-pocket costs for doctor and hospital services since 1984 – and still spends half as much per person on health care as the U.S. does. While

Canadians are more likely to see a doctor in any given year, they’re less likely than Americans to wind up in the hospital.

Rather than ban copayments entirely, however, the U.S. could make better use of their ability to steer people away from high-cost, low-value care – emergency rooms for routine treatments, for example, or brand-name drugs when generics are available. Imposing higher upfront costs for these makes sense, so long as services that provide better value are easier to afford.

The government should also look at extending copay subsidies to lower-income beneficiaries on employer plans and lowering the cap on out-of-pocket costs.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR GETTING THE REAL TRUTH To the Editor: As a 32-year resident of what is now Campton Hills, I am very pleased with its development since incorporating in 2007. I do not personally know Patsy Smith, but I attended many meetings prior to its incorporation. I was skeptical that the promises she made before incorporation could be kept, in particular, the yourproperty-taxes-will-not-increase promise. After all, how many times have we heard that from politicians and been disappointed?

Well, here we are, some eight years later, and we have a police department, a new Village Hall and other government services.

And, lo and behold, Patsy Smith has kept her promise to do all those things and not levy new property taxes. Kudos to her, I say, and the other village trustees who have sided with her in this effort.

Is the root of the disharmony between Patsy Smith and some of the village trustees because she wants to continue to hold the line on taxes while others want to raise taxes? I wish we could get the real truth behind the squabbles. If we only knew which village trustees are fiscally conservative and who the tax-and-spend liberals are. Patsy Smith has proven that she will hold the line on taxes, and, for this reason, I will continue to vote for her and the other board members allied with her.

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Every time the St. Edward girls basketball team made a push to take control, Kaneland’s Ally VanBogaert had an answer.

The senior forward hit several clutch shots in the second half to give the No. 4 seed Knights a 39-37 win over the No. 5 seed Green Wave in the first round of the IHSA Class 3A Sycamore Regional on Monday night.

VanBogaert, who had 11 of her team-high 13 points in the final two quarters, caught a pass behind the 3-point line on the break with the Knights leading, 36-35, with 1:18 left.

Instead of pulling the ball out and settling for free throws, VanBogaert made the 3 on the left side to give Kaneland a much-needed two-possession lead.

“I was confident I could make it,” VanBogaert said. “I was hot so I figured go for it.”

“Early in the season, that would have been a ‘No, no, no, yes,’ moment,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said.

“But right now, she’s a senior and she’s been shooting the ball extremely well down the stretch. For us, that was a good shot at the moment.”

Whenever Kaneland – which led 22-10 at halftime and had a 14-point advantage early in the second quarter – needed a key basket against the Green Wave, VanBogaert came up with one.

After St. Edward trimmed the Knights’ lead to 25-23 late in the third, she scored five straight points – a mid-range jumper on the left sideline and a 3-pointer from the right corner.

When the Green Wave later cut that lead to 30-27 midway through the fourth, VanBogaert came up with another 3.

and-ones to give St. Edward a chance to tie or take the lead.

“Right now, we have to fix what’s between our ears and not pysche ourselves out at the line,” Colombe said.

The Knights finished 8 for 19 from the free-throw line, while the Green Wave went 13 for 14.

However, Kaneland came up with a late stop – on a steal by junior center Bailey Crimmins – and the Green Wave never got a shot off in their final possession after a missed free throw by the Knights.

Now the Knights face their most daunting task of the season, playing No. 1 seed and state contender Burlington Central (24-3) in the regional semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“They’ll be our biggest challenge,” Kaneland junior guard Camri Conley said.

“But if we come out and play as a team, we’ll give them a battle.”

“We have nothing to lose,” Colombe said. “Everybody is picking Burlington and that’s fine. We can play loose and play as a team. We’ll take our chances.”

Hampshire defeated Genoa-Kingston, 49-30, in the other quarterfinal game and will face No. 2-seeded Sycamore in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

North senior Jack Callaghan thinks his team will be more prepared for the Vikings as the scene shifts to North’s home floor.

“We’re ready for that 1-3-1 zone they kind of got us with last time,” Callaghan said.

“We weren’t expecting that, so we’ve been preparing for that.

We’re just excited. We’re hyped up for that game.”

While North has lost just once since the calendar flipped, Geneva (23-2, 10-1 UEC River) has won 14 straight and is unbeaten in 2015.

The Vikings, though, have little margin for error, both in the conference race and in their pursuit of the top seed at next month’s IHSA Class 4A Geneva Regional. Coaches’ voting for regional seeding is due Wednesday, meaning tonight’s result could factor in.

Poulin thinks a Geneva win tonight likely would nail down the top seed for the Vikings, whereas a North victory could give East (19-3, 10-2 UEC River) the nod. The Saints and Vikings split their two conference meetings.

Given how well his team has played lately and the North Stars’ nonconference schedule strength, Poulin said a North win tonight should at least inject North into the discussion for the top seed.

“I’ll say it, I think we play the toughest schedule in our area, period, if you just line up the opponents,” Poulin said.

“Not that others don’t play a

tough schedule. I think we all get challenged during the year.

I think ours is stronger than anybody’s this year. So if we were able to split with Geneva, I think I have a case possibly to say we could look at a 1, but that’s kind of a reach. I have to give it some thought.”

The top seed at a stacked Geneva Regional is not merely an ego boost, considering whichever teams among Geneva, East and North slot into the 2 and 3 seeds almost certainly will have to face each other in a regional semifinal.

Ralston said he’s only worrying about what he can control – preparing the Vikings to beat North – and thinks a well-informed seeding decision will be made by coaches at the regional, which also includes Batavia and DeKalb.

“It’s not like we have to go on word of mouth or reading newspaper articles or looking on MaxPreps or the Essig Report,” Ralston said. “It’s one of those deals where we know each other probably too well, know the strengths and weaknesses of the teams, so seeding will just be determined based on people’s opinions.”

Marmion wins nails down SCC championship

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Marmion boys basketball team won the Suburban Christian Conference outright Monday night, doing it in thrilling fashion in a 61-56 victory against St. Francis.

The Cadets (15-11, 6-1 SCC) were bolstered by a number of clutch late free throws, including four from junior guard Josh Ruddy, who hit two 3-pointers in the second half.

“Coach said at the beginning of the game, we all had to be ready no matter what,” Ruddy said. “Coming off the bench I was feeling it in warmups and I felt the shot when I had it. I was wide open on both (3s) so I took them and I

made them.”

Ruddy’s late free throws boosted his total to 10 points on the night, alongside a steal and a rebound.

The game wasn’t without controversy, as Spartans leading scorer Gabriel Johnson was seemingly fouled shooting a 3-pointer with the Cadets up, 59-56, late in the fourth, but he didn’t get the call.

Instead, the Cadets grabbed the rebound and Jon Young put away the final free throws of the night to preserve the win.

The Cadets won a conference title for the first time in 40 years in the process, with late free throws being the deciding factor.

“A game like that is going to come down to free throws,” Cadets coach Joe Currie said.

“They’re a very good team.

Bob (Ward) does a tremendous job with those guys and we know that every time we play them it’s going to be a tough game like that. Our kids just kept battling. They made their runs. Hats off to my kids.

They made the buckets when we needed to extend the lead and made free throws down the end.”

The Spartans opened the game on an 8-2 run, but were victimized by several fouls in a row, allowing the Cadets to take a 13-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.

St. Francis outrebounded the Cadets, 16-12, in the first half and narrowed the gap to 29-24 going into halftime after trailing by as much as seven at one point.

Cooney had seven boards in the first half while Daniel Malek had six points, one rebound and an assist.

The Spartans rallied after a technical foul on Hunter Weber allowed them to tie the score at 38, but the Cadets ended the third quarter on a 5-0 run after Josh Ruddy drained a 3 with seconds remaining for the 43-38 lead.

Ruddy opened the fourth with another 3 to put the Cadets back up by eight but the Spartans got five straight points from Jason Sullivan, who hadn’t hit a field goal in the first half, to trail 46-45.

Marmion opened the lead back up to 56-50, but St. Francis refused to go away.

The Spartans made it a 5652 game and had a two-on-one fast break looking to draw

closer when Ruddy stole the pass and was sent to the charity stripe, converting both free throws for the six-point lead.

Glasgow led all scorers with 21 points for the Cadets and added five boards and four assists.

The senior took the conference championship in stride, knowing how much it’s taken to earn it.

“It’s humbling, knowing that it’s never happened before and it’s my senior year,” Glasgow said. “All these guys I’ve been playing with for the four years I’ve been here, we were just able to pull it off, what no other team has been able to do.”

Johnson finished with 15 points to lead the Spartans, who fell to 14-10 and 4-4 in the SCC in the process.

After a shaky start to the season, the St. Charles North boys basketball team has arguably played as well as anyone in the area in 2015 – with one, notable exception.

North’s lone loss in 2015 was a clunker, a 48-36 loss to host Geneva when the teams met for the first time last month.

The Vikings and North Stars will reconvene tonight in St. Charles in a game that will go a long way toward crowning an Upstate Eight Conference River champion.

Geneva didn’t shoot well in the January meeting but a painful, 4 of 31 shooting night from 3-point land for North bailed out the Vikings.

“We feel like we can’t shoot any worse than we did that first time, and we defended very well,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “So hopefully we can be as effective defensively and shoot a little bit better, and we’ll see what happens. They’re as good as it gets in the area.”

North isn’t too shabby itself.

The North Stars (16-7, 9-2 UEC River) have won 14 of 17 games

and have dropped only the Geneva game since falling twice Dec. 31 at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament (to Benet and West Aurora).

The ice-cold shooting night at Geneva is an outlier for a team that is coming off consecutive, impressive wins over the weekend against Larkin and Hillcrest. North also notched a statement win last month against St. Charles East, which whipped North in two, early-season meetings.

“They have the ability to shoot the ball really well,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said.

“Their ability to outlet and push the tempo for the game, that is something they do so well is get out and go, similarly to East. They’re very similar teams. But what I find is that North has just been playing so well together. They’re fluid. Their guys seem to be on the same page with each other. That’s something the good teams do.”

Ralston said his team’s ability to contest shots with its superior size likely factored in to North’s shooting travails in the first meeting but the North Stars also clanked several

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE The City of Aurora Police Department and Metea Valley High School are investigating an incident after Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference Valley boys basketball game in which a player from visiting South Elgin allegedly was battered by players from Metea Valley.

Dan Ferrelli, spokesman for the Aurora Police Department, said Monday that an investigation into the situation is ongoing.

“Apparently a 16-year-old male for South Elgin High School said he was battered by several males thought to be Metea basketball players at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday the 13th after the game as he tried to board the team bus,” Ferrelli said.

The player went to an Elgin hospital and required three stitches for a cut above one of his eyes, Ferrelli said.

Ferrelli said there was no disturbance during the game that required police intervention, and he did not speculate on what led to the incident.

Metea Valley won the game, 76-64.

South Elgin athletic director Jason Ward wrote in an email Monday that Metea Valley in addition to the Aurora Police Department are investigating the incident but otherwise declined comment.

Metea Valley AD Robert Lathrop could not be reached for comment.

Ferrelli said the department was in “the preliminary stages of the investigation” Monday and that if anyone has information they would like to bring forward, they can call the Aurora Police’s Crime Stoppers line at 630-892-1000 or the investigations line at 630256-5500.

Unlike the past two seasons, when the St. Charles East senior lost wrestleback semifinal matches that would have assured him passage into the IHSA Class 3A state tournament, Lopez simply fell short of the Glenbard North Sectional’s 170-pound crown.

Sure, the result wasn’t optimal, but because it didn’t impact Lopez’s stronghold on a long-elusive goal, he grinned without remorse.

“One match away my sophomore year, one match away this year,” Lopez said. “This year, even coming off the injury (a broken thumb suffered late in football season) I had a fire under me that was a lot different. I didn’t want to

Teammate Anthony Rubino, a 126-pound junior, and Saints senior 152-pounder Keone Derain, Lopez’s friend and practice partner since elementary school, will join him at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign. State preliminar-

ies begin Thursday and concludes with finals Saturday.

While Derain makes his third straight state trip, the rest of the Chronicle-area field ranks as newbies in comparison. St. Charles North sophomore Kolbe O’Brien (106) and Geneva senior Austin Chaon (195) are

state-bound, as well.

Said Derain: “I’m really excited. I have the feeling I could do really well this year.

I’ve been starting to turn up my intensity, and it seems to be working. I’m excited Ramon’s coming down this year, finally. We’ve got Rubino in the mix, too.”

Rubino and O’Brien know one another from offseason training and often cavort during downtime of individual-based competitions such as sectionals.

That description makes them friends. Their rationales, however, couldn’t have differed more.

Rubino entered the finals against Oak Park-River Forest’s Gabe Townsell knowing he was assured of a state berth, an especially gratifying proposition considering his close call as a sophomore.

Like Lopez (25-3), he lost a wrestleback semifinal at the Leyden Sectional.

Neither the opposition nor the clock could slow the Cadets, who sent six wrestlers on to this weekend’s IHSA Class 3A state tournament after an impressive performance at the Downers Grove North Sectional, which included four individual sectional champions.

Batavia’s Dylan Uzumecki stormed back from a 6-0 loss to Hinsdale’s Joshua King in the 220-pound semifinals to earn a stunning victory by fall in the wrestleback semifinals, cementing the Bulldogs’ lone state berth.

Uzumecki then defeated Marist’s Diata Drayton, 6-4, in the third-place match.

Marmion sophomore Anthony Cheloni was the champion at 138 pounds, defeating Wheaton-Warrenville South’s

Qarin Jonnic, 4-2.

Cheloni took a 3-0 lead in the second period after a scoreless first and looked confident in the third to earn the win and his first trip to state.

“Mostly, I just kept my head in it and didn’t get out of it,” Cheloni said. “I stayed ready at all times and knew anything could happen.”

Cadets senior Mikey Callahan rallied after an 8-2 semifinal loss to Lyons’ Johnny Mologousis at 145 pounds to win his wrestleback semifinal, 132, and earn his spot at state.

In the third-place match, Callahan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and extended it to a 7-2 victory over Metea Valley’s Kenan Carter.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Callahan said. “I was pretty down after I lost that semifinals match, but I just had to wrestle hard and get to state.”

Callahan will join Cheloni in the ranks of the first-timers, while the Cadets also will send AJ Jaffe (132), Trace Carello (160), Riley DeMoss

(170) and Nathan Traxler (182).

Marmion sent nine wrestlers to state last season, and co-coach Ryan Cumbee was impressed with this group’s resolve to get there.

“We have a different team,” Cumbee said. “The six that we’re sending this year, I feel very confident with those guys. We had a great tournament. Obviously as a coach you want to bring everybody and you’d like for everybody to make it that far, but it doesn’t happen. So with the six guys we have going I’m excited to see what they can do.”

Saturday’s sectional felt like just another tournament for the Cadets because of the particularly grueling regular season schedule filled with out-of-state foes, Cumbee said.

“You’re going to see these guys go out there and wrestle like any other tournament,” Cumbee said. “I don’t think you’re going to see a lot of first-time nerves or jitters or anything like that because

that’s why we have the schedule we do. We wrestle one of the toughest schedules in the country for this very reason.

We go to the Ironman, we go to the Clash, the Warhawk. For us the state tournament is just another tough tournament, it just means a little more. Our boys are ready. They’re battle-tested, their confidence is high.”

Traxler agreed with his coach that the heavy schedule enabled his team to succeed on the bigger stage.

“Definitely,” Traxler said.

“I’ve been in multiple overtimes and one-point matches this season, and that’s definitely helped. Every time I get into one of those I know I’m going to come out better just because I’ve done it before and can do it again.”

Carello won at 160 after one of the longest bouts of the day. Carello took a 1-0 lead in the second period of a bout with Sandburg’s Tom Slattery before Slattery evened it up at 1-1 in the third.

Hawks big man Taylor Adway missed a shot in the lane in the closing seconds, and North won for the 14th time in its past 17 games.

The bench contributions late were especially crucial for North as senior forward Jack Callaghan fouled out with 4 minutes to play and saw limited time throughout the game.

Callaghan picked up his second foul, then drew a technical for his third during a frustrating stretch of the second quarter when it appeared the Hawks were pulling away, building a 28-16 lead.

But despite being hammered on the glass during the first half, North closed the second quarter well and crept within 34-28 at the break.

Poulin, whose team can share the conference title if it wins its final three Upstate Eight Conference River games, starting with today’s showdown against Gene-

va, was encouraged by the way North handled Hillcrest’s length and athleticism.

“We have multiple ball-handlers and smart kids, high basketball IQ, that are unselfish, and that’s what you need,” Poulin said. “At halftime we talked about better spacing, changing the alignment a little bit and looking ahead. They really don’t protect the rim.”

Junior guard Mikey Schroeder scored 14 points for North while Karom finished with 11.

In the shootout nightcap, Kaneland and Larkin – two teams that were coming off disastrous starts in Friday losses, Larkin to North and Kaneland to DeKalb – again played an eventful first quarter, with the Royals reversing their fortune.

Larkin roared to a 14-0 lead, setting the tone in a 68-51 victory.

Kaneland coach Brian Johnson thought his team might have been psyched out by the Royals, who boast a pair of intimidating interior presences in

Christian Negron (20 points, 14 rebounds) and brawny senior Daniel McFadden.

“We know Larkin’s a good team, and I don’t want to say [the players] are intimidated, but they start worrying about those things,” Johnson said.

“Larkin picked up the pressure.

Once we realized, ‘Hey, we can play, we made a little game of it,’ but 25 turnovers and [allowing] 19 offensive rebounds, I think that’s 46 extra chances for them to score and us not to score.

That’s not going to win you too many games.”

Junior guard Dylan Vaca brought the Knights (11-12) back into contention in the first half, when he scored 15 of his gamehigh 23 points. The Knights trimmed the Royals’ lead to 2824 at halftime.

“He’s playing really well,” Johnson said. “What I like about Dylan is his offense and defense are kind of linked together. When he’s doing well offensively, his defense is really good.”

MAPLE PARK – If the St. Charles North boys basketball team wanted a confidence-building weekend leading up to today’s showdown with Geneva, this certainly qualifies.

One night after winning at Larkin, North topped quality south suburban foe Hillcrest, 66-64, Saturday as part of Kaneland’s Day and Knight of Basketball Shootout.

“It’s definitely one of our best wins,” North guard Jarod Karom said. “They’re a really good team. I thought we played really well.”

North’s bench factored heavily into that assessment, with Karom playing a leading role.

“Second night in a row where we don’t skip a beat, or play better at times,” North coach Tom Poulin said of his reserves. “It just shows that the depth has developed or they’ve been ready and I haven’t given them enough time.”

North (16-7) trailed, 50-48, entering the fourth quarter. Karom’s 3-pointer put North up, 5351, with 6:12 to play, and Karom went 6 for 6 from the line in the quarter to further boost North’s cause.

“Jarod’s a heck of a shooter, and he’s quick as a jitterbug, he’s all over the place,” Poulin said. “He did a very good job just of being composed and making the most of his minutes.

He’s been a kid that’s hungry for more and when he gets on the court, he’s earning them, so we’re real proud of him.”

Another reserve guard, David Pozna, turned in a crucial defensive play, drawing a charge call as North protected a 57-52 lead.

Still, Hillcrest (16-6) created a suspenseful finish as guard Marcus Garrett made a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute, the second of which drew the Hawks within 66-64 with 16 seconds left.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Furniture often has unexpected names that honor the maker or a connection to a famous person. A Chippendale or Sheraton chair is named for the designer. Larkin desks are named for the company that gave them away. The Wooten desk was named for the maker, Mr. Wooten. But the Recamier sofa is named for the woman who posed for a portrait on the lopsided bench. For many centuries there had been armless benches and window seats -small benches with arms at each end that did not block the view from the window. By the 1800s, there were long chairs with the French name “chaise longue,” made so your feet were kept as high as the chair seat. But by 1800, the seats included the “meridienne,” a bench with arms but no back made for lounging, not sitting. Madame Juliette Recamier had her portrait painted while stretched out on one of these.

The portrait, by Jacques-Louis David, became so famous the Directoire piece of furniture was called a Recamier by the public and the name stuck. The end of the story is strange.

When the portrait was almost finished, she hired another artist to do another portrait. David was so angry he never finished his picture. Part of the canvas shows in the background-her head was missing details and the artist did not glaze the painting. It was given to the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1826 and because it is unfinished, it has been a guide to the methods and brushwork used by the artist. Recamier sofas have remained in fashion. A Regency-style mid-19th century example was offered at a New Orleans auction in the summer of 2014 with an estimate of $2,000 to $4,000. Like many of these pieces, it has “BEST IN THE MIDWEST OR ANYWHERE”

A: This Dutch Treat cookie jar is said to have been made by McCoy between 1968 and 1973, even though there is no mark. It sells for about $50. ** * Q: I inherited a mid-nineteenth century melodeon about 50 years ago. The woman who had it knew nothing about it. The cabinet is in pristine condition and the instrument itself in perfect working condition. It’s marked “B. Shoninger, New Haven, Conn.” How old is it and what is it worth?

A: Bernard Shoninger founded B.

Shoninger & Company in 1850. The company made melodeons, pianos and organs. The melodeon was invented by Jeramiah Carhart in 1835. He wanted to make an instrument with a softer sound than a reed organ. His sons took over the business in 1898 and only pianos were made after that. The company went out of business in 1929 but Shoninger pianos continued to be made by National Piano Corporation of New York until the 1960s. Melodeons are hard to sell because few people play them. Prices are in the low hundreds of dollars. *** Q: I have a sugar container with ornate ear-like handles and no lid. I think it’s pewter. It’s marked with a circle and the words “Meriden B. Company” surrounding a shield with a balance scale inside it. It’s dated 1836. Can you give me the history and value?

A: Your sugar container was made by Meriden Britannia Company of Meriden, Connecticut. It was founded in 1852 and became part of International Silver Co. in 1898. The number on your sugar is not the date, the company was not in business that early, it’s the catalog number.

Your sugar is silver plate, not pewter, and was pictured in Meriden’s 1886-’87 as part of a tete-a-tete set that included coffeepot, teapot, sugar and creamer with catalog numbers 1836 and 1837. A

set of four pieces was originally $14.50.

I’m sorry, but I really don’t want to see all that. I guess some folks think the image of a blurry, black-and-white fetus is “darling.” But to me, all I see is an up-close-and-personal snapshot of a stranger’s uterus.

Even if we’re best friends, I don’t need all that detail. TMI, right?

I really wish people would deliver this kind of news face-to-face.

Urgent care centers are for non-emergencies Dear Doctor K: What are urgent care centers? Are they the same as emergency rooms?

Dear Reader: They definitely are not the same. Emergency rooms are for true emergencies – even though many people go to emergency rooms for quite minor problems. Typically, emergency rooms are attached to hospitals, because patients with true emergencies usually need to be hospitalized after their treatment in the emergency room.

In contrast, urgent care centers are for medical problems that benefit from prompt attention but are not life-threatening.

Some hospitals staff urgent care centers as well as emergency rooms. However, many urgent care centers are stand-alone units, located in storefronts or drugstores. Urgent care centers are for common illnesses, such as colds, the flu, earaches, sore throats, migraines, low-grade fevers and rashes. They’re also for minor injuries, such as sprains, back pain, minor cuts and burns.

How do you decide where to go for an urgent medical problem? If you have a primary care doctor, the first thing to do is contact him or her – unless you’re convinced it’s a life-threatening emergency.

If you don’t have a primary care doctor, then you’ve got a decision to make.

Suppose a loved one burned

When deciding between an emergency room and an urgent care center, consider this general rule: If a person could die or be permanently disabled, go to an emergency room. If the problem does not seem life-threatening and does not risk disability, go to an urgent care clinic.

How do you know if your symptom (or that of a family member) could cause a person to “die or be permanently disabled”?

The following situations require emergency treatment in adults: • Severe chest pain or pressure; • Pain in the chest that travels to the arm or jaw, even if not severe; • Unusually bad headache, especially if it started suddenly; • Suddenly not being able to speak, see, walk or move; • Sudden weakness or drooping on one side of the body; • Choking; • Head injury followed by passing out, fainting or confusion; • Injury to neck or spine, especially with loss of feeling or difficulty moving; • Electric shock or lightning strike; • Severe burn;

• Seizure; • Trouble breathing; • Passing out, fainting; • Inhaled smoke or poisonous fumes; • Sudden confusion; • Heavy bleeding; • Possible broken bone, loss of movement; • Deep wound; • Coughing or throwing up blood; • New, severe pain anywhere in the body; • Severe allergic reaction with trouble breathing, swelling, hives; • High fever with headache and stiff neck; • High fever that doesn’t get better with medicine; • Throwing up, or having loose stools, repeatedly; • Poisoning or overdose of drug or alcohol; • Suicidal thoughts.

When you go to an emergency room for minor problems, it’s likely you’ll wait many hours to be seen, and your insurance may not cover a chunk of the very large bill. Granted, you can’t always know in advance what a true emergency is. But I hope the situations I described above will help you decide.

Dr. Wallace: Why are guys afraid to say, “I love you”? I’ve gone with three guys and none of them will say these words, even if they do, in fact, love me. At a tender moment, I will tell the guy, “I love you,” and all I get is, “I care for you, too.” And my best friend has the same problem. It seems like the guys all say, “I love you” in the movies, but not in real life. This really bothers us a lot. Why do you think they don’t?

As a former high school head basketball coach my inclination is to say no, but since I’m no longer a coach I would like to say, yes, a girl with superb athletic skills should be allowed to play on an all-boys team if she could help the team win. But that means that boys should also be allowed to try out for all-girls teams and play on these teams if the boys are good enough to make the team.

Still, I don’t think this would work because since Mother Nature generally made boys taller, faster and stronger, it wouldn’t take long before all-girls teams would be dominated by boys, thus denying many girls the wonderful opportunity to participate in high school athletics.

Sometimes we are surprised at the choice made at the bridge table by ourselves and others. In today’s deal, the winning choice would be overlooked by players unaccustomed to searching for alternatives to the obvious.

Against four spades, West leads his diamond two – “My stronger minor, partner.” East wins with his ace and returns the suit. What should South do after ruffing?

It is reasonable for South to open four spades in the third (or fourth) position. Opposite a passed partner, a slam is unlikely, and the bid rates to keep the opponents quiet. (One point for serious partnerships: If you open four of a major with such a strong hand and the opponents enter the auction, you must double to tell partner about your unexpectedly high point-count.)

South has four potential losers: two hearts, one diamond and one club. He has only nine sure winners: seven spades, one heart and one club.

At first glance, declarer could play for two heart tricks or take the club finesse. He could draw trumps and play a heart to the queen. But here if East plays low, the contract can no longer be made.

Did you see the sure route to 10 tricks? After pulling trumps, South should cash his club ace and continue with the club queen. West takes the trick, but when declarer gets into the dummy with a heart, he can cash the club jack. His 10 winners are seven spades, one heart and two clubs.
