McNally’s preps for opening Wednesday in St. Charles

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Shay Clarke’s excitement about the upcoming reopening of McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub was evident Monday as he gave visitors a tour of the downtown St. Charles establishment.

“I’m dying to show it off,” he said.

He soon will get his chance.

The restaurant, which closed about 10 months ago at 109 W. Main St., is set to reopen at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Clarke said it has taken five weeks to restore the place, which most recently was home to Valley Lodge Tavern.

In that time, he said, such kitchen equipment as the oven and grill has been replaced, every wall has been painted, and every floor has been scoured.

While there are new cosmetic features, including wainscoting and new furniture, Clarke said he expects “so many people will walk in here and not see any changes at all.”

The main floor features sports decor, including murals featuring hurling and rugby, while the upstairs focuses on the arts, such as Irish musicians, writers and playwrights.

Clarke noted McNally’s will feature fewer TVs than its predecessor.

“We’re not about TVs,” he said.

“We’re about conversation.”

Executive Chef Kevin Gillespie, who was busy in the kitchen Monday, said he has spent recent weeks testing dishes to determine what works and doesn’t work. The made-from-scratch menu items will feature locally grown

products, he said, adding that offerings will change by the season.

Other plans for McNally’s include serving brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings, offering entertainment from 7 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and having traditional Irish music from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sundays, Clarke said.

Jancauskas promoted to Batavia deputy fire chief

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – During a firefighting career than has spanned nearly three decades, Ed Jancauskas has been a leader at the Batavia Fire Department.

Now, Jancauskas is preparing for his biggest leadership role yet, as deputy fire chief, the department’s second-in-command.

Jancauskas will be sworn in as the new fire deputy at the March 7 meeting of the Batavia City Council.

Six persons, all from within the department, applied for the deputy post, Fire Chief Randy Deicke said, and Jancauskas scored highest in the testing process.

As deputy chief, Jancauskas will

be responsible for running the dayto-day operations of the department, from vehicle maintenance to safety programs.

“I want to keep the department in a forward motion and keep people focused on what they are supposed to do,” Jancauskas said.

With fewer structure fires these days to provide actual experience for firefighters, this means training operations are key.

“Training is more vital now than ever,” Jancauskas said.

After high school, Jancauskas was serving in the U.S. Navy when he was first exposed to firefighting and decided to pursue it as a career.

“I thought it would be a cool thing to do,” Jancauskas said.

Jancauskas joined the Batavia Fire Department in 1987 as a paid-on-call firefighter, and went full time in 1990.

By 1999, Jancauskas had been promoted to lieutenant, serving as a shift commander. He was appointed a battalion chief in 2007.

With 23 full-time firefighters and a paid-on-call crew of between 27 and 35, Jancauskas and the command staff are managing a force with many young people.

“It’s our responsibility to understand what makes them tick,” Jancauskas said. “You can’t just give somebody an order. They want to understand why.”

Jancauskas replaces Randy Banker, who took a firefighting post in Wisconsin.

The Evergreen is bringing new tastes to a formerly shuttered St. Charles tavern

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When diners come to the recently opened The Evergreen Pub and Grill in St. Charles, they can expect more menu choices than just fried dishes.

“We take a lot of pride in our food,” owner Tom Trier said.

In addition to sandwiches and salads, the establishment offers pasta selections, fish fry options and such entrees as ribeye, strip steaks and walleye. Trier said plans are in the works to install a pizza oven for its homemade pies.

On weekends, customers can stop by for breakfast beginning at 9 a.m., owner Brian Zirlin said.

He encourages people to check out The Evergreen, which opened in the former Ray’s Evergreen Tavern site at 1400 W. Main St. and is under new ownership and management.

He noted that a St. Patrick’s Day bash is planned to coincide with the St. Patrick’s Parade on March 12. A grand opening celebration is set for April 30.

Fox Valley Girls Coding Club providing opportunities for females

alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Robin Schroeder said she was taking a tour of 25N Coworking in Geneva when she heard about a club that was preparing to start meeting there, the Fox Valley Girls Coding Club, also known as the XX Coders.

The club, aimed at high school girls, was created to provide opportunities for young females hoping to learn about software development. On its website, www.foxvalleygirlscodingclub.com, it mentions “a long-standing imbalance in the ratio of men/women in technology.” Schroeder, who works in the field, said she can verify that.

“A lot of times, I’m the only one,” Schroeder said of the lack of females in the industry. She said she wanted to get involved, and she left her business card.

The Fox Valley Girls Coding Club meets on Friday nights at 25N Coworking, at 25 N. Third St. in Geneva.

The student founder is Isabella Maki, a sophomore at St. Charles North High School. Her mother, Mary Ann Maki, said her daughter would have preferred to join an existing club but didn’t find any options. So far, there are about 12 girls in the club, Isabella Maki said.

Schroeder and Lee said they are committed to helping girls embrace the opportunities the club can offer. Isabella Maki said she wanted to learn more about coding after hearing about the Girls Who Code organization while watching “Project Runway.”

When she decided to start her own club, she said she was nervous at first about whether she would have enough participants, but several friends and others jumped right in.

“I do think there is a lot more interest than you would think,” she said.

“A lot of girls would be interested, but they don’t really know enough about it. … A lot of people I’ve talked to didn’t even know what it was.”

it might be impossible to do. Others might think it is a field dominated by men who don’t have good social skills.

She said she recently went to an event that drew 57 men. Schroeder said she was the only woman there.

“When you think of IT people, they are introverted and non-social,” she said. “It’s not [necessarily true]. … I comb my hair. I wear makeup. My office is clean. It’s kind of breaking that mold. lenging field, but they said it’s not one that is extraordinarily difficult to grasp. Lee said she first broke into the field at age 49, and she stressed that those interested – male or female, younger or older – should give it a try.

“You don’t have to be a mathematician,” she said, adding that “a lot of people can do it. I don’t know that I would say everybody can. … To me, it’s not that hard to do a good job on it. You have to be an intelligent person, but you don’t have to be a genius.”

Isabella Maki said those in the club have improved after the first few meetings.

“It is difficult at first to grasp some of the concepts,” she said. “As you learn more and more … it becomes easier for you to figure it out.”

Kelsey Rankin, the communications chair for the Geneva Film Festival, said the volunteer organization was looking to freshen up its website.

The festival takes place from March 10 to 12.

“Nothing major, but we did ask them for a couple of projects to help us,” she said. She added that the website will move over to a new platform.

“It will give them some experience on a real-life website,” Rankin said.

That can be beneficial for those hoping for a career in the field, but Schroeder said even those who aren’t interested in pursuing it as a potential job would benefit from the program.

“There is no career on planet Earth that they will ever have, even as a stayat-home mom, that doesn’t involve a computer,” Schroeder said, adding, “If they have more patience and understanding of how a computer works, they will be better off.”

Cooper’s Hawk announces plans to join The Quad St. Charles in 2017

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Quad St. Charles next year should have a new restaurant on its campus.

In a news release, Illinois-based Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurants announced Monday that it plans to build its 28th location on an outlot on The Quad site at 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The Quad is the new identity for Charlestowne Mall.

Cooper’s Hawk founder and CEO Tim McEnery stated in the release that he is thrilled to extend the company’s wine and dining experience to area residents.

“I’m confident that Cooper’s Hawk will be a welcome addition to the St. Charles community and look forward to the restaurant opening in 2017,” he stated in the release.

Cooper’s Hawk is the first outlot announced for the Charlestowne Mall site since the Krausz Companies Inc. took ownership of the property in November 2013. Matt O’Rourke, the city’s economic development division manager, said the

ownership has maintained it has a lot of interest in the outlots.

“This verifies that, for sure,” O’Rourke said.

Noting that momentum is always part of any commercial development, he said that having a quality name associated with the property helps market the site to others.

O’Rourke said Mayor Ray Rogina accurately described the city’s reaction to Monday’s announcement.

“It joins other noted restaurants in town for making St. Charles a serious restaurant destination,” Rogina stated in the release. “Cooper’s Hawk is a wonderful addition to the new Quad identity.”

According to the city, construction is expected to begin this summer. The establishment is planned for a parcel adjacent to the westernmost entrance along East Main Street.

Since opening in Orland Park in 2005, Cooper’s Hawk has expanded to other sites in Illinois as well as to Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Wisconsin.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District Board voted recently to have some firefighters work part time and some remain full time. Board President Robert Handley said nine of the 24 firefighters will work part time, and 15 will be full time through the contract with Public Safety Services Inc. “We decided to transition it … to less guys over a period of time,” Handley said. “It’s what our captains were comfortable with at this point.”

After Fire Chief Carl DeLeo resigned recently, two captains are handling the chief’s responsibilities until a new chief can be hired, Handley said.

Part time means 30 hours a week instead of 40 for the full-time firefighters, Handley said. The board moved to a part-time model to save money, officials said.

Handley said the rough estimate of savings is $60,000 to $70,000.

“We are still meeting with our accountant to be more exact,” Handley said. “There are some variables we are not sure of.”

Handley said the district has to be able to set money aside to pay for equipment that needs to be replaced. Handley said the district likely will ask voters for a tax increase in April 2017.

“We’ll see how that floats with

the residents,” Handley said. “We want to see how we shake out financially.”

At its January meeting, about 60 people packed the fire district’s board meeting to protest the parttime plan. Some criticized the board for not trying again on the primary ballot. A previous referendum request in April 2015 failed.

“They were yelling at us for not putting it on the ballot, but that was after they [voters] told us, 3-1, they did not want to pay any more,” Handley said, of the previously failed referendum.

Two firefighters left when officials announced the move to have nine firefighters be part time, Handley said.

“We lose guys all the time, because our pay is not where everyone else’s pay is,” Handley said “They work for us at $45,000 [a year], when they can go to St. Charles and make $75,000 to $80,000.”

Handley said most firefighters were happy to hear not all were going to go part time.

“I’m cautiously optimistic, but I think we are going to be OK,” Handley said. “We’ve got a great group of guys who are loyal and committed. I just wish we could pay them more.”

The board also accepted the appointments of Carl Herout and Tom Mullenhauer to fill the board vacancies left by former district President Jim Gaffney and Trustee Terry Jeglum.

ST. CHARLES – Those wanting to participate in the 17th annual St. Patrick’s Parade have more time to submit their application.

In a news release, the Downtown St. Charles Partnership announced last week it extended the deadline for entries to Feb. 26.

Volunteer applications will be accepted up to the date of the parade, the release states.

The parade is set for 2 p.m. March 12 on Main Street in St. Charles.

Local businesses, community groups and nonprofit organizations are encouraged to participate, the re-

lease states.

Past entries have included bands, Irish dancers, school groups and service clubs.

According to the release, parade applicants must complete an entry form, obtain a certificate of insurance and sign off on the rules and regulations.

The documents must be returned to the Downtown St. Charles Partnership office with the appropriate entrance fee. The cost is $250 for businesses, $125 for partnership members and free for nonprofits.

Businesses seeking to sponsor the event should contact the partnership immediately, the release states.

Nominees for U.S. service academies recognized for hard work

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Parents of each high schooler who approached U.S. Rep. Bill Foster on Saturday took dozens of photos as the 17 students received recognitions of nomination to U.S. service academies.

“I had to hold back the tears,” said Erin Solorzano, recalling the moment her daughter, Joliet Central High School senior Mercedes Solorzano, walked to the podium.

“It’s exciting. She’s been working at this for a long time,” Erin Solorzano said.

Foster, D-Naperville, presented the recognitions in the annual U.S. Service Academy Nomination Ceremony for the Illinois 11th Congressional District on Saturday morning at the American Legion Marne Post 13 in Plainfield.

“Serving in our armed forces is a difficult challenge,” Foster said. “But more importantly, it’s a noble calling that all of the nominees here have answered.”

a kid. She has been a part of the Joliet Central JROTC program all four years of high school. But she decided to apply for the Naval Academy because of the specific engineering opportunities available.

“I was looking through the most STEM-based field when it came to the branches, and I found the Navy,” she said, adding that she wants to study nuclear engineering and apply her education to the Navy.

Foster talked and took individual photos with the nominees after the ceremony. But he said the most memorable part is when nominees and their families get that sense of recognition.

“It’s when I talk to the parents and see how proud they are, and watch the kids react to the honor,” Foster said.

Eight Rubio take-aways from Saturday’s debate

The Republican presidential debate Saturday demonstrated a number of key points regarding the race and about Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, specifically.

1. The Rubio team showed tremendous confidence in booking the candidate on all the Sunday shows. If he had done poorly, it would have been a disaster. As it was, he could take a victory lap.

2. If not for the interlude with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in the preceding debate, Rubio would be the overwhelming favorite to become the consensus pick for the nomination. Given his debate Saturday, he went a long way toward debunking the “robotic” slur.

3. In getting back on his feet with such an impressive performance Saturday, Rubio went a long way toward demonstrating the toughness many Republicans were unsure he possessed. It helped when he dissected Sen. Ted Cruz’s record so effectively, showing he can be aggressive without being obnoxious.

4. The dislike among the candidates for Cruz is palpable. After the recent debate, Rubio got a chance to reiterate his attack: “Obviously, in the last couple of weeks, he has really exhibited this very troubling tendency to say things that just aren’t true. Just making things up. I mean, just this week alone he had to pull an ad off the air because it didn’t tell the truth about my position on sanctuary cities. He’s lied about my position on marriage; he’s lied about Planned Parenthood and my position on that.

And he’s not being honest about his previous position on immigration.”

5. The Bush super PAC does Jeb Bush no favors. Its members are obviously frustrated, and remark upon it frequently, that Bush is the primary Donald Trump attacker. This appears to be part of the attempt to belittle Rubio, an effort which comes across as ham-handed and petty, as one saw in the attempt to mock Rubio for taking candy (gum?) offered by Trump.

It is entirely out of step with Bush’s more presidential tone and makes it appear the Bush team is rattled by Rubio’s good reviews.

6. Drawing massive crowds Sunday (2,000 at one location) suggests Rubio has some momentum. Expectations for him are that he will finish a solid third, but – if he outperforms – he will take a big step toward becoming the de facto establishment choice.

7. The Supreme Court was supposed to be in Cruz’s wheelhouse, but both during the debate and on television Sunday, Rubio gave Republicans the sense he would be every bit as effective at choosing a replacement for the vacancy opened by Justice Antonin Scalia’s passing. “Here’s the bottom line, I don’t trust Barack Obama on the appointment of Supreme Court justices. We cannot afford to have Scalia replaced by someone like the nominees he’s put there in the past,” he said on “Meet the Press.”

“We’re going to have an election; there’s going to be a new president; I believe it’s going to be me, and we’re going to look for someone that most resembles Scalia to replace him.”

8. Rubio’s defense of President George W. Bush was savvy on two levels. First, he stood up to Trump’s ludicrous “Bush lied” meme that is despised by conservatives. Second, he is in essence saying, “You can revere Bush and still vote for me.” With Bush 43’s popularity in the state and appearance on the trail, this is about as effective a way of limiting his impact as one can devise.

Rock as a man with a masterful ability to work with both sides of the aisle in Springfield; as a result, every transit rider in our region benefits from his work every day. Serving as president of the Illinois Senate, Rock worked with his colleagues to create the Regional Transportation Authority – the unit of local government charged with regional, financial and budgetary oversight, as well as funding and transit planning, for the CTA, Metra and Pace Suburban Bus and Pace Americans with Disabilities Act Paratransit Service.

In his book, “Nobody Calls Just to Say Hello,” Sen. Rock describes 1973 as a contentious year for transit. “All the public transportation services were on their own and threatening to increase fares significantly or stop running,” Rock wrote, and then, citing another: “Pub-

kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Feisty 4-year-old Auggie Weyers arguably stood smallest among the several dozen skaters weaving around the outdoor hockey rink at Langum Park on Monday afternoon.

His sweater, however, resonated above all.

“Hockey Is For Everyone,” it read.

Although that slogan officially belongs to the NHL’s youth development program, it trickled down to the USHL’s Chicago Steel for two fantastically frigid hours during the Presidents Day school holiday. Venturing away from their swankier – and slightly warmer – home digs at Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena, the Steel, in conjunction with the St. Charles Park District, welcomed young fans and their parents for a Skate With the Steel event.

Skates and cameras were encouraged. Hot chocolate and camaraderie were free.

“That’s one of the coolest parts, I think, of my junior hockey career is just noticing all the little kids coming up to you and kind of giving you the big eyes,” Steel left wing Jack Gessert said.

“It’s just awesome.”

Several fans leaned against the rink’s side boards to ask Steel players for autographs. Others took a more direct route, hollering at them or tugging at their sweaters on the ice.

The Steel sported their black team jerseys for the hourlong skate, which featured elements of stick and puck and impromptu hockey instruction.

Steel coach Dan Muse, a 33-year-old father of two young daughters, found himself giving pointers to Auggie Weyers and his 6-year-old brother, Max, a first-grader at Davis Elementary School. Max Weyers, it turns out, still did some reading on his day away from school. He was hockey mad before the skate.

“Studying my hockey cards and a book about NHL players,” he said.

Indeed, dad Joe Weyers, who works from home, managed further angst before taking the boys to the rink. The day began with the Steel playing a 3-on-3 tournament, a spectacle that also stood out to fans such as Joe Weyers, who spotted a flier at Pottawatomie Park while recently picking Auggie up from preschool.

Logan Dooley, a 13-year-old from Geneva who’s an eighth-grader at Kenyon Woods Middle School in South Elgin, brimmed about the chance to see the Steel up close. He attended a game earlier this season and is especially a fan of defenseman Adam Parsells.

“It’s pretty cool,” Dooley said. “It’s exciting. … I like hockey. I just wanted to meet new people and play with them.”

Temperatures hovered in the mid20s, cold enough to prompt an astonishing admission from right wing Christiano Versich near the end of the afternoon.

“I’m getting colder by the second,” shivered Versich, a native Minnesotan.

Another teammate from the Land of 10,000 Lakes – each one, ostensibly, with two blue lines – smiled at thoughts of flashing back to his home life.

Center Jake Jaremko, 19, figured the Langum Park rink dimensions were similar to those of his literal home rink. Each year, his father repositions side boards and floods the rink in the front yard of his family’s Elk River, Minnesota, home.

“Outdoor hockey, we played pretty much every night,” Jaremko said. “I love it.”

Gessert could attest. He benefited from having a pond in the backyard of his boyhood home in Novi, Michigan.

“No hitting, so a lot more stickhandling and dangling and skating and

stuff,” Gessert said.

In his next cold breath, Gessert praised the play of goalies Daniel Vladar and John Lethemon, not only in the fast-paced 3-on-3 tournament but throughout a season that will see the Steel play 12 of their final 17 games at home.

Monday offered a respite from the usual grind. At one point, Lethemon yielded his mask, blocker and trapper to forward Max Zimmer, who faced youngsters’ shots without leg pads.

If that didn’t reinforce the idea that hockey is for everyone, Muse did his part moments later as the entire group gathered together for a photo.

“You want to be in the team picture with us?” Muse said to two children near the entrance to the rink. “Come on over.”

Batavia ‘process’ nearly complete

It wasn’t as smooth of a process as it turned out to be on the court.

It took a number of hours of repetition and practice, but Batavia accomplished something it set out to do since the first day of the season, and that’s holding the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title.

The Bulldogs (18-8, 9-1 UEC River) beat Larkin on Friday to secure at least a share of the title and can win the division outright with a victory in either of their two remaining games (home vs.

Elgin, at St. Charles East), or an East loss Friday at Larkin.

“It’s been a long process, but these guys have believed since Day 1,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “I’m extremely jacked for every guy in our locker room because of how hard they have worked and the time they put in. Some of these teams (in the UEC River) are very good teams and tough to play on the road. We have found ways to pick up very good wins against very, very quality opponents.”

No Bulldog wants Batavia to be the only ones with its name on the conference trophy more than senior guard Canaan Coffey. Even though his final high school season has seen him reach the 1,000-point plateau, Coffey always is hungry for more.

That’s why the win against Larkin was just another stepping stone.

“It’s awesome to get the win, but you can never be satisfied,” Coffey said.

Just as Batavia players were running off the court to celebrate Friday’s win, Bulldogs coaches had been alerted of East’s 55-42 win at Geneva.

The Vikings had just beaten Batavia one week earlier, but the Saints are fully healthy at the right time, and seemed to take Geneva out of any rhythm or momentum it tried to develop from its win over the Bulldogs.

“They’re playing extremely well right now,” Nazos said of the Saints..

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE HOFFMAN ESTATES – St. Charles East wrestling coach Jason Potter inevitably urges his athletes to “Circle right” during a bout depending on flow and positioning.

On Saturday, the bracket of the IHSA Class 3A Conant Sectional mandated that Potter and his brother/assistant, Chris, follow their own advice.

After presiding over junior Joe Ruffino’s 106-pound championship match, the Potters quickly arrived at the thirdplace mat at the other end of the gym to offer tutelage to freshman 113-pounder Justin Benjamin.

The brothers lingered as sophomore Niko Derain (132) and senior D.J. McDermott (152) also wrestled for third. Although each Saint but Benjamin lost his final match of a long weekend, paydirt – a berth in the IHSA Class 3A state tournament beginning Thursday in Champaign – officially arrived earlier in the day.

“Now it’s just working real hard, getting my weight down, preparing for something I’ve never been at,” Ruffino said.

Each of the Saints’ four state qualifiers will compete at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center for the first time. Ditto for Geneva senior Alex Crowe, who took fourth at 195 pounds.

“It’s amazing,” Crowe said. “That was just my goal this year,” and to reach it, it’s refreshing.”

Derain’s berth extends a formidable family streak in Champaign. His older brother, 2015 East graduate Keone Derain, finished his career with three successive state trips.

The Cadets’ Nathan Traxler (182) and Trace Carello (152) took top honors in their weight classes.

Traxler, last year’s 182-pound 3A state champion, took first with a 6-4 decision over Jack Jessen of Willowbrook.

“I was really excited for how we did as a team. We got nine qualifiers. We only had six last year,” Traxler said. “I think it’s better for our team (to be in a tough sectional). You get your work done early here and get a taste of the competition at state, which is good for us.”

A.J. Jaffe (138) and Anthony Cheloni (132) came in second place. Trevor Chumbley (113), Nate Jimenez (160) and Jake Polka (126) earned third-place finishes. Matt Ferraro (170) and Brad Gross (145) took fourth.

Uzumecki earned a return trip to Champaign by taking third place.

“It’s not how I planned it,” Uzumecki said. “I was kind of mad that I lost in the championship semifinals and had to go through the wrestlebacks, but I’ll take it.”

Especially considering the competition.

Class 2A Washington Sectional: At Washington, Kaneland’s Austin Kedzie rolled into the IHSA Class 2A state tournament with a sectional title at 106 pounds. Burlington Central’s Austin Macias earned a sectional title at 120.

Maple Park, it was a tough night for St. Charles as both the North Stars and Saints were upended in back-to-back games.

St. Charles North fell to Rock Island, 54-50, followed by St. Charles East losing to Benet Academy, 75-51. Host Kaneland rolled past Marian Central, 68-48, later in the night.

Four Knights finished in double figures, led by Jake Gomes with 21 points.

Mitch Groen (13) was next, followed by Mark Lilly (12) and Ryan David (11).

With a bench of just three players, North battled an athletic Rock Island squad, and had chances to get within one score on several occasions in the game’s final minutes as the Rocks made just one of five free throws down the stretch.

“I think we played fine,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “We stayed with them and we competed. … We had some good looks at the end, but unfortunately the shots didn’t go in.”

East had battled back from a double-digit deficit and pulled to within 37-34 with 4:37 to play in the third quarter. Then the floodgates opened.

Benet hit six consecutive 3-pointers on an 18-0 run to close out the quarter.

“It was a combination of things,” Saints coach Pat Woods said of the deciding Benet run. “We did not play well defensively and they played very well offensively.”

Arthur developed many special types of glass for Tiffany, including the famous iridescent Favrile. The factory history gets complicated. Tiffany added a foundry, survived the rationing of the war years, and started making new designs for metal work in 1921 under Arthur’s son, A. Douglas Nash (1885-c.1940). And in 1928, Tiffany Furnaces became A. Douglas Nash Corporation. Nash continued to make enameled metal pieces, including cigar boxes, picture frames, ashtrays and desk sets, in designs similar to but simpler than earlier Tiffany pieces. In 1932 the company closed, and A. Douglas Nash went to work for Libbey Glass and the Pittsburgh Glass Co. He died in 1940. Some pieces marked with the Nash company name are appearing at auctions and shops. A bronze box with a colorful enameled landscape set in the top was sold at a 2015 Skinner auction in Boston for $1,353, five times estimate. Did the bidders know that Nash was the famous glass maker who worked for Louis Comfort Tiffany? Or were they collectors of artistic 20th-century enameled metal, a collecting field that still is

not well-known? *** Q: I have a glass hatchet from the St. Louis World’s Fair. It’s 7 1/2 inches long and has a picture of George Washington and “The Father of our Country” on one side of the blade and “World’s Fair, 1904” on the other side. What is it worth?

by Libbey Glass Co. for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The words “Libbey Glass Co. Toledo, Ohio” are embossed on the handle. Your hatchet, made for the 1904 World’s Fair, doesn’t have the name of the company on the handle, so it probably was made by another manufacturer. At least five different glass hatchets were made as souvenirs for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

Memorabilia from his campaigns is among the most popular with collectors and some items bring high prices. Several different badges were made for delegates to the 1908 Democratic convention. Dear Abby: My sister-inlaw has asked me to pay for repairs to the passenger seat of her car. She was picking up my 9-year-old to stay the night, and when he got inside, he moved the seat forward to better fit his stature. She got upset and said, “The seat was broken. We had it set just right for me when I’m the passenger.”

Since he adjusted it she hasn’t been able to reset it. When I asked if there was a note on the dash that read “Do not move seat,” she said no. Premenstrual issues are treatable Dear Dr. K: I always assumed my premenstrual mood swings were normal. But then I talked to some friends whose emotional symptoms are much less severe than mine. A quick Internet search turned up “PMDD.” Can you tell me more about this?

Dear Reader: The physical symptoms of premenstrual dysmorphic disorder (PMDD) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are the same. They include fatigue, swollen breasts, backache, headache, food cravings, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. But the emotional symptoms of PMDD, compared to PMS, are much more severe.

PMDD is characterized by extreme moodiness, irritability, depression and anxiety.

These symptoms appear the week before a woman gets her period and go away a few days after it starts. A woman with PMDD may experience severe depression and feelings of hopelessness. In especially severe cases, women even may feel suicidal. For these reasons, PMDD is an official psychiatric diagnosis.

How can you tell if you have PMDD or PMS? For a cycle or two, keep track of the dates of your period. Note when your symptoms occur and how severe they are. Your doctor can review the pattern and severity of your symptoms.

PMDD can be treated, but finding the right treatment can take time, as well as trial and error. I spoke to Dr. Hope Ricciotti, my Harvard Medical School colleague and editor-in-chief of the Harvard Women’s Health Watch, about the options.

For women with PMDD who also want contraception, the birth control pill can be very effective. Several studies suggest the best birth control pills for controlling PMDD symptoms contain the hormone drospirenone.

If this doesn’t adequately improve your symptoms, increasing the amount of estrogen in your birth control pill can help. If you still have troublesome symptoms, your doctor might recommend the “continuous method.”

In this method, you take active birth control pills every day. Women who follow the continuous method will stop having periods.

Another treatment option is the class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). There are many SSRIs to choose from, and studies suggest they are equally effective. If the first one you try doesn’t work, your doctor can change the dose or have you try a different SSRI to see if you get a better response.

The women I’ve treated for PMDD often have had their symptoms for years before seeking help. For women who haven’t experienced it, or for people who have not seen it in family and friends, it can be hard to appreciate how disruptive PMDD can be. For around 10 to 15 days each month, a person with PMDD really can have trouble at home and at work. Their moodiness and irritability can affect their relationships with family or co-workers.

The “Teens should be seen and not heard” philosophy is, as far as I’m concerned, poor parenting. It prevents a young person from developing and nurturing a positive self-image.

Open communication between parents and teens is crucial in building trust and promoting the closeness all families seek.

Look at only the West hand and the auction in this deal. What should West lead against four spades?

When North jumped to four spades, he showed four trumps and opening strength. If South had had extra values, especially with 4-3-5-1 or, even better, 4-3-6-0 distribution, he would have proceeded toward slam.

The club queen would be a popular lead choice. Then, declarer would most likely win on the board and play a diamond to, say, his jack. West will win and probably shift to a trump.

South wins in the dummy and plays a second diamond. That also loses to West and another trump is returned, but declarer wins in his hand, ruffs a diamond, plays a heart to his king, and ruffs his last diamond. Then, though, South must be careful.
