Geneva police help foil shooting plot Geneva woman, 23 charged in Halifax Feb. 14 shooting plot

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Although a Geneva woman is charged in a foiled shooting plot targeting a Canadian shopping center, police said Saturday there is no threat here.

“It does seem to be an incident isolated to Canada,” Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said at a news conference called Saturday afternoon. “[There is] no threat to this area at all.”

Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath, 23, of Geneva, and Randall Steven Shepherd, 20, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, according to a news release issued Saturday by Canadian police.

They are expected in Halifax Provincial Court on Tuesday morning. “[Royal Canadian Mounted Police] and [Halifax Regional Police] have laid charges in this incident and have

eliminated the threat,” Chief Jean-Michel Blais of Halifax Regional Police said in a statement. “This is a reminder that this type of incident can happen anywhere.”

A third individual, a 17-year-old male from Cole Harbour, was released overnight without charge, the release states. Although he was a person of interest, police reported Saturday that there is no evidence to link him to charges.

Timberlea is a community within the province of Nova Scotia.

In a news conference Saturday, Canadian authorities described the four individuals as friends who decided to plan and commit a “heinous” crime for reasons not yet known. Police were not defining them as a terrorist group because their plans didn’t have ethnic or political considerations, they

said.

A Crime Stoppers tip suggested the 19-year-old and Souvannarath had access to firearms, and they intended to go to a public venue Feb. 14 with the goal of opening fire to kill citizens before killing themselves, according to the release.

Evidence shows Shepherd also was involved, the release stated.

At the request of the Halifax Regional Police, Geneva police executed a search warrant at Souvannarath’s residence Friday evening, Passarelli said.

Passarelli said items were taken from the residence, but at the request of the Canadian authorities he would not specify what was seized. It is an ongoing investigation, he added.

He did not provide the address of the home searched, only that it was in town.

He said Souvannarath and her family, who have been “extremely cooperative,” were unknown to local police.

“We’ve had no contact with her, whatsoever,” Passarelli said.

bor of the Souvannaraths and that members of his family were interviewed by other media outlets Saturday. He declined to give his first name but said news of the plot in Canada was surprising and shocking.

Canadian police said in the news conference that Halifax Shopping Centre was the target. They declined to provide specifics about the firearms.

“This is an excellent example that demonstrates the value of the Crime Stoppers program,” Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer Brian Brennan said in a statement.

“The information came to us in a timely manner and allowed us to act quickly. We often ask citizens to be our eyes and ears in their communities and it was through one tip that we were able to intercept and eliminate a significant threat,

and ultimately save lives.”

Canadian authorities said it is too early to know whether Souvannarath will be extradited to the United States. They said she was entering Canada upon her arrest.

The Souvannaraths already lived in the neighborhood when the Schooleys moved there in 2000. The Schooleys said they would see Souvannarath at neighborhood events and that she seemed like a normal teenage girl that went through different phases and interests.

According to Geneva High School yearbooks, Souvannarath belonged to the Class of 2010. She was involved in the fall play her junior year, “The Rimers of Eldritch,” and in the RPG Club.

Souvannarath enrolled as a student at Coe College starting with the fall term in 2010, wrote Rod Pritchard, a spokesman for the Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based college, in an email Sunday.

Souvannarath graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, double majoring in English and creative writing, Pritchard wrote.

St. Charles aldermen to review updated 1st Street plan

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee on Tuesday will review an updated proposal for the ongoing downtown development of First Street.

The Planning and Development Committee will vote to make a recommendation on a PUD preliminary plan, as well as a redevelopment agreement with First Street Development II LLC. The recommendations are for the proposed third phase of the First Street Redevelopment project. The proposed site plan includes three mixeduse buildings and a parking deck, according to the city’s executive summary of the recommendations.

The Historic Preservation Commission in November reviewed and unanimously

recommended approval of the preliminary plan. Commission members noted a number of positive design features of the proposal compared to the

previous plan in 2008, according to the executive summary.

The Plan Commission in December reviewed and unanimously recommended

approval of the plan, but with conditions attached. These included future plan approval for the architectural elevations proposed for the third building in the project, streetscape improvements along First and Illinois streets and East Plaza and Riverwalk improvements.

The streetscape and Riverwalk improvements should be installed as each adjacent building is constructed, according to the executive summary.

The Planning and Development Committee’s meeting will begin after the regular St. Charles City Council meeting concludes Tuesday. The regular council meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The event will feature Haque’s trio and local student musicians “sitting in,” plus

the Alex Murphy Quartet, as part of the Student Artist Event presented by the SCAC, in partnership with Northern Illinois University.

The arts council is underwriting the concert, as well as a master class given by Haque immediately preceding the concert at 5 p.m. The SCAC is making this master class free to students. Tickets are on sale for $20.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – Ramon Lopez stomached his third successive sectional-ending defeat Saturday with something bordering on giddiness.

Unlike the past two seasons, when the St. Charles East senior lost wrestleback semifinal matches that would have assured him passage into the IHSA Class 3A state tournament, Lopez simply fell short of the Glenbard North Sectional’s 170-pound crown.

Sure, the result wasn’t optimal, but because it didn’t impact Lopez’s stronghold on a long-elusive goal, he grinned without remorse.

“One match away my sophomore year, one match away this year,” Lopez said. “This year, even coming off the injury [a broken thumb suffered late in football season] I had a fire under me that was a lot different.

I didn’t want to finish on a bad note.”

Teammate Anthony Rubino, a 126-pound junior, and Saints senior 152-pounder Keone Derain, Lopez’s friend and practice partner since elementary school, will join him at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign. State preliminaries begin Thursday and concludes with finals Saturday.

While Derain makes his third-straight state trip, the rest of the Chronicle-area field ranks as newbies in comparison. St. Charles North sophomore Kolbe O’Brien (106) and Geneva senior Austin Chaon (195) are statebound, as well.

Said Derain: “I’m really excited. I have the feeling I could do really well this year. I’ve been starting to turn up my intensity,

and it seems to be working. I’m excited Ramon’s coming down this year, finally. We’ve got Rubino in the mix, too.”

Rubino and O’Brien know one another from offseason training and often cavort during downtime of individual-based competitions such as sectionals.

That description makes them friends. Their rationales, however, couldn’t have differed more.

Rubino entered the finals against Oak Park-River Forest’s Gabe Townsell knowing he was assured of a state berth, an especially gratifying proposition considering his close call as a sophomore. Like Lopez (25-3), he lost a wrestleback semifinal at the Leyden Sectional.

In the moments after a 14-3, major decision loss to Townsell, though, Rubino wasn’t interested in perspective – his new travel itinerary notwithstanding.

“Yeah, it’s way better [to advance downstate], but even if I take second, it’s not good enough,” Rubino, 40-5, said. “I mean, I probably could have

wrestled a little harder, but Gabe Townsell’s tough. He happened to come out on top.”

O’Brien, by contrast, needed to win his wrestleback semifinal bout to advance to the thirdplace match, the state-qualifying standard since the IHSA expanded to three wrestling classes in 2009.

Defeating Glenbard East’s Nick Donovan turned the trick, but it seemed O’Brien might have approached things with the same even keel either way.

“It’s mainly mental preparation,” he said. “You’ve kind of just got to go out there and have fun, and whatever happens, happens. … I just tried to keep calm and relaxed. And if I win, I win, and if I don’t, there’s always next year, too, since I’m a sophomore.”

O’Brien (31-9) and Chaon (3711) also were eliminated at the Leyden Sectional last season. On Saturday, both needed to win wrestleback semifinals to advance. Derain (35-4) and Chaon earned victories in their respec-

tive third-place bouts. O’Brien lost his.

During a long weekend that began with a session Friday night, each athlete appreciated the continued support. Thirteen other wrestlers from East, North and Geneva entered the sectional but did not finish in the top four.

“It’s great to have teammates with you to kind of keep you light,” Chaon said. “But you treat it like it’s any other tournament. Don’t let anything get into your head.”

O’Brien actually boasted more wins during his most recent trip to State Farm Center, albeit as a spectator. He traveled to Champaign for the 2014 state tournament as a freshman brimming about a 35-8 debut season.

“I went down last year to watch, but this year, I’ll actually be wrestling,” O’Brien said.

For each of O’Brien’s brethren who can attest this time of year – both in the Tri-Cities and statewide – those final four words are magic.

Host Kaneland digs another hole, loses to Larkin in nightcap

jschwab@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – If the St. Charles North boys basketball team wanted a confidence-building weekend leading up to Tuesday’s showdown with Geneva, this certainly qualifies.

One night after winning at Larkin, North topped quality south suburban foe Hillcrest, 66-64, on Saturday as part of Kaneland’s Day and Knight of Basketball shootout.

“It’s definitely one of our best wins,” North guard Jarod Karom said. “They’re a really good team. I thought we played really well.”

North’s bench factored heavily into that assessment, with Karom playing a leading role.

“Second night in a row where we don’t skip a beat, or play better at times,” North coach Tom Poulin said of his reserves. “It just shows that the depth has developed or they’ve been ready and I haven’t given them enough time.”

North (16-7) trailed, 50-48, entering the fourth quarter.

Karom’s 3-pointer put North up, 53-51, with 6:12 to play, and Karom went 6 for 6 from the line in the quarter to further boost North’s cause.

“Jarod’s a heck of a shooter, and he’s quick as a jitterbug, he’s all over the place,” Poulin said. “He did a very good job just of being com-

within 34-28 at the break.

Poulin, whose team can share the conference title if it wins its final three Upstate Eight Conference River games, starting with Tuesday’s showdown against Geneva, was encouraged by the way North handled Hillcrest’s length and athleticism.

“We have multiple ball-handlers and smart kids, high basketball IQ, that are unselfish, and that’s what you need,” Poulin said. “At halftime we talked about better spacing, changing the alignment a little bit and looking ahead. They really don’t protect the rim.”

Junior guard Mikey Schroeder scored 14 points for North while Karom finished with 11.

In the shootout nightcap, Kaneland and Larkin – two teams that were coming off disastrous starts in Friday losses, Larkin to North and Kaneland to DeKalb – again played an eventful first quarter, with the Royals reversing their fortune.

Larkin roared to a 14-0 lead, setting the tone in a 6851 victory.

Kaneland coach Brian Johnson thought his team might have been psyched out by the Royals, who boast a pair of intimidating interior presences in Christian Negron (20 points, 14 rebounds) and brawny senior Daniel McFadden.

posed and making the most of his minutes. He’s been a kid that’s hungry for more and when he gets on the court, he’s earning them, so we’re real proud of him.”

Another reserve guard, David Pozna, turned in a crucial defensive play, drawing a charge call as North protected a 57-52 lead.

Still, Hillcrest (16-6) created a suspenseful finish as guard Marcus Garrett made a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute, the second of which drew the Hawks within 66-64 with 16 seconds left.

North guard Jake Ludwig, who led all scorers with 20 points, then missed a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left, opening the door for Hillcrest. Hawks big man Taylor Adway missed a shot in the lane in the closing seconds, and North won for the 14th time in its past 17 games.

The bench contributions late were especially crucial for North as senior forward Jack Callaghan fouled out with 4 minutes to play and saw limited time throughout the game. Callaghan picked up his second foul, then drew a technical for his third during a frustrating stretch of the second quarter when it appeared the Hawks were pulling away, building a 2816 lead.

DOWNERS GROVE – Business as usual was the sense for Marmion after a dominant display of wrestling Saturday.

Neither the opposition nor the clock could slow the Cadets, who sent six wrestlers on to this weekend’s IHSA Class 3A state tournament after an impressive performance at the Downers Grove North Sectional, which included four individual sectional champions.

Batavia’s Dylan Uzumecki stormed back from a 6-0 loss to Hinsdale’s Joshua King in the 220-pound semifinals to earn a stunning victory by fall in the wrestleback semifinals, cementing the Bulldogs’ lone state berth.

Uzumecki then defeated Marist’s Diata Drayton, 6-4, in the third-place match.

Marmion sophomore Anthony Cheloni was the champion at 138 pounds, defeating Wheaton-Warrenville South’s Qarin Jonnic, 4-2.

Cheloni took a 3-0 lead in the second period after a scoreless first and looked confident in the third to earn the win and his first trip to state.

“Mostly, I just kept my head in it and didn’t get out of it,” Cheloni said. “I stayed ready at all times and knew anything could happen.”

Cadets senior Mikey Callahan rallied after an 8-2 semifi-

nal loss to Lyons’ Johnny Mologousis at 145 pounds to win his wrestleback semifinal, 132, and earn his spot at state.

In the third-place match, Callahan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and extended it to a 7-2 victory in the over Metea Valley’s Kenan Carter.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Callahan said. “I was pretty down after I lost that semifinals match but I just had to wrestle hard and get to state.”

Callahan will join Cheloni in the ranks of the first-timers, while the Cadets will also send AJ Jaffe (132), Trace Carello (160), Riley DeMoss (170) and Nathan Traxler (182).

Marmion sent nine wrestlers to state last season, and co-coach Ryan Cumbee was impressed with this group’s resolve to get there.

“We have a different team,” Cumbee said. “The six that we’re sending this year, I feel very confident with those guys. We had a great tournament. Obviously as a coach you want to bring everybody and you’d like for everybody to make it that far, but it doesn’t happen. So with the six guys we have going I’m excited to see what they can do.”

Saturday’s sectional felt like just another tournament for the Cadets because of the particularly grueling regular season schedule filled with out-of-state foes, Cumbee said.
