EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey Many news-related topics were discussed last Friday morning in Kimberly Reese’s classroom at Kaneland High School.

I visited two of Ms. Reese’s journalism classes to speak about the Kane County Chronicle, how technology continues to change the media landscape and my career as a newspaper reporter and editor. In addition, I spoke to the students about internship and job shadow opportunities at the Chronicle, and journalism scholarships offered by the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association, an organization dedicated to advancing the quality, integrity and credibility of journalism and journalism education in northern Illinois.

During my visit, the students in Ms. Reese’s classes, many of whom work on the school’s Kaneland Krier publication, asked me some great questions about my work and their own.

Scouts from Pack 155 in

St. Charles and a few of their parents visited the Kane County Chronicle newsroom that evening to learn about newspapers and how they are produced.

They also got a brief lesson on the First Amendment, a tour of the newsroom and a special introduction to reporter Eric Schelkopf, who just happens to be an Eagle Scout.

The boys were full of enthusiasm, and I was happy to help them learn more about

newspapers.

They came as Tiger Scouts, and the next day many earned the rank of Wolf. Congrats to those accomplished pack members.

STC restaurant Prime Bistro appears to have closed

The restaurant, which opened last year in the former location of River Rockhouse, announced the closure on its Facebook page this week, just days after posting its live weekend entertainment and a half-priced burger special.

“We would like to thank all of your [sic] for coming into Prime Bistro,” the Wednesday post states. “At this time we will be closing our doors.”

There was no indication of the closure on the building

Opportunity knocking for teens Businesses seeking summer help begin to make connections

t. Charles East High School senior Megan Murtaugh was looking for a way to earn extra cash and gain some job experience last year when she found out that the St. Charles Park District needed people to work at the front desk at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles.

The 17-year-old was hired in March 2013 and now spends 15 to 20 hours a week performing such tasks as answering the phones at the community center and helping people register for classes.

And she has some advice for her fellow teens who are looking for work.

“It is really important to put yourself out there and to find something that works for you,” Murtaugh said.

Despite the snow still on the ground, local businesses are getting ready to hire summer help.

The St. Charles Park District will hold its annual Teen Job Fair in cooperation with the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Pottawatomie Community Center gymnasium, 8 North Ave. The fair will be for those ages 16 to 24. Participating businesses and agencies include Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden, Midwest Groundcovers, Eagle Engraving, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Cynthia K. Wade Consulting, Avon, Jamberry Nails, Affordable Party Tent Rentals Inc., St. Charles Park District and Fox Valley Spe-

Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden in St. Charles looks to hire between five and 10 teens for the summer, manager Christa Bormann said.

“It’s keeping everything local,” Bormann said. “We’re a local business, and we like to make sure we hire local teens.”

The St. Charles Park District’s annual Teen Job Fair attracts hundreds of teen job seekers.

“Last year, more than 300 teens were at the fair,” said Lara Piner, the park district’s recreation supervisor. “We originally started the job fair just for ourselves and then added local businesses so

there is more of an opportunity for teens.”

The fair has proven to be a good way for the park district to find summer help, Piner said.

“We probably hired 80 to 100 teens last year,” she said.

The job market could be tight this summer for teens seeking jobs, especially college students.

Craig Frank, president of Frank’s Employment in St. Charles, said those who are seeking jobs should apply early.

“This summer will be similar to last summer,” Frank said. “Most of the positions we are seeing are for experienced and advanced positions. It’s

Funway Ultimate Entertainment Center in Batavia usually hires about 10 teens during the summer.

The teens typically are high school seniors or college students.

Funway owner Bob Hansen called it “a fun environment for the kids.”

“It’s a first job for a lot of people,” Hansen said. “They get a learning experience for future jobs.”

For some teens, the summer job ends up turning into a career.

“Many of our students are looking to go into special recreation or special education,” said Alex Redenius, support staff manager for Fox Valley Special Recreation Association. “They look to us to gain some of those experiences to see if a career in special education is the right path for them.”

FVSRA provides yearround recreational opportunities for residents with disabilities, including summer day camp programs for children with disabilities. Redenius said “it is not an easy summer job.”

“They are going to work hard,” Redenius said. “But gaining that experience at such an early age is so valuable.”

Sheriff defending need for new shooting range

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez on Friday defended his office’s need for a shooting range.

“This is a necessity. It is not a luxury,” he told the Kane County Board’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee.

“It’s ridiculous to sit here and argue about it.”

Perez is seeking a budget adjustment for the project, which had an initial construction cost estimate of about $1 million.

Bids, however, came in at about $800,000 over budget.

The committee considered tabling the request after concerns were raised about it not being in the five-year capital

plan.

Perez said the original estimate was done as a favor. The $800,000 discrepancy was not due to anything his office did, he said, but because of unforeseen costs.

The funds are there, Perez said, citing an agreement to house U.S. Marshal inmates.

It generated a $2.6 million surplus in fiscal 2012 and a $2.1 million surplus in fiscal 2013, he said.

Board member Ron Ford, D-Aurora, voiced his support for the budget adjustment.

“This is the lower bidder,” he said. “Like the sheriff said, it’s nothing that they have done.”

The shooting range is planned for a location near the jail, Perez said.

The existing range on Fabyan Parkway is no longer usable, he said.

His officers – who must complete regular training for their job – use St. Charles’ facility, but use is limited to weekdays during daylight hours and it can be closed by weather, Perez said.

The committee forwarded the request to the Finance Committee after a split vote.

At the end of the meeting, Ford encouraged his colleagues to support construction projects because they positively affect the economy.

“Every time we get a chance to create a construction project, we should do our best to move it forward,” he said. “Construction projects move the economy.”

Geneva Women’s Club offering scholarships GENEVA – The Geneva Women’s Club (formerly Mothers Club of Geneva) will offer tuition aid once again to Geneva school district residents who will pursue higher education.

For the academic year 201415, the organization will be awarding multiple scholarships totaling $7,500.

Qualifying applicants will be evaluated on the basis of financial need, community service and academic achievement.

Applicants must reside in the Geneva school district, be a current high school senior during the 2013-14 academic year, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better, be able to show proof of community service hours and enroll at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or a vocational-technical school. A special Kane County drug interdiction unit Thursday profiled an out-of-state pickup truck speeding in a construction zone on Interstate 90 near Route 47 as a possible drug courier.

And when the unit members pulled the driver over, it led to a drug bust of 55 pounds of marijuana and the arrest of a retired sheriff’s deputy from another state, Kane County William Sheriff Pat Pe- Floyd Marsh Jr. rez said.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit Deputies Sgt. Ron Hain and Detectives Justin Douglas and Terry Hoffman pulled over William Floyd Marsh Jr. 56, shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday. Marsh told them he was armed and a retired sheriff’s deputy from Clackamas County in Oregon, officials said.

Perez said it would be a safe assumption that Marsh was hoping his status as a retired law enforcement officer would be enough to let him go.

“I don’t care if you’re a retired cop, you are going to go down like anybody else,” Perez said.

Deputies became suspicious that Marsh was involved in narcotics trafficking and found another handgun and $80,000 in cash

hidden in toolboxes in the bed of the truck, officials said.

As they continued to investigate Marsh, deputies obtained search warrants for storage lockers at 143 E. Lake Cook Road in Palatine and another at 2835 N. Western Ave. in Chicago, officials said.

Between the two lockers, deputies seized about 55 pounds of high-grade marijuana with an estimated street value of about $750,000 and another $2,185 in cash.

Marsh, of the 400 block of North First Street, Creswell, Ore., was charged with armed violence, trafficking marijuana, delivery and possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and money laundering, all felonies.

Marsh is being held in the Kane County Jail on $1.5 million bond, and his next court date is Feb. 21.

Marsh faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the armed violence, trafficking and delivery charges; four to 15 years in prison on the possession charge and three to seven years in prison on the money laundering charge.

Each charge also carries a fine of $25,000.

“Any time an active duty or retired police officer chooses to turn their back on the laws they were sworn to uphold, they choose to no longer be law enforcement professionals but decide to become a criminal,” Perez said.

Clackamas County Deputy Marcus Mendoza said Marsh retired about 10 years ago and currently has no affiliation with their department.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After three years at the helm of the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva, Pete Schaefer announced Friday he was stepping down to rejoin his family business, Winning Presence LLC in Lake Forest.

The board asked him to continue on while they look for a replacement, and to take on the role of chairman of its Emeritus B o a r d , r e p - Pete r e s e n t i n g 3 0 Schaefer years of board veterans.

Schaefer said the decision to step down was bittersweet.

“I call it the yin and the yang,” Schaefer said. “I have seen so many neighbors in need who have lost a job or are on a fixed income, who are underwater on their mortgage or they don’t earn enough. I have seen so many neighbors step up, so many companies step up to help. So I have seen the best of it and the worst of it.”

Under Schaefer’s tenure, the Northern Illinois Food Bank moved from St. Charles to a $13 million facility on

Geneva’s east side in 2011.

Called the Community Nutrition and Food Distribution Center, the larger space allows the agency to provide the equivalent of up to 4 million meals a month, officials said.

Schaefer said one in five children in Kane County go hungry, and one in eight to 10 county residents go hungry, making the food bank’s mission ever more important.

“Hunger is all over the place,” Schaefer said. “It’s hidden. It’s right on your block. We have kids relying on the federal breakfast and lunch program, and that’s all they are getting. Teachers know on Monday morning who is hungry and who is first in line.”

Schaefer said hunger in Kane County can be solved.

“There is not a shortage of food or money, it’s the community getting together,” Schaefer said. “All we have to do is ignite the community around this ... to donate and get involved.”

Schaefer, 54, said he has had a long career in food banking, with 20 years as a volunteer, six years on the board of the Greater Chicago Food Bank Depository, eight years on the Northern Illinois Food Bank board and

three years as its president and CEO. “The future of the food bank – it’s rosy,” Schaefer said. “I feel good they are going to grow, but bad that they have to grow.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department this week responded to two vehicle burglaries in residential areas on the city’s far west side, police said Friday.

The burglaries reportedly happened Wednesday during the overnight and early morning hours in the 100 block of St. Germain Place and the 200 block of Tower Hill Drive near Peck Road.

Department spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said mis-

cellaneous items were stolen from the unlocked vehicles.

She could not say what specifically was taken.

Police are urging citizens to secure their cars and remove anything of value if possible.

Personal items should not be in plain view.

BATAVIA – Students at H.C. Storm Elementary welcomed a special guest to their Batavia school Friday: TV icon Henry Winkler, who encouraged them to find the greatness within them.

“The world needs every bit of your greatness,” the actor said.

Winkler – who is best known for his role as the Fonz on “Happy Days” – also co-authors a children’s book series with Lin Oliver that was inspired by his own learning challenges with dyslexia.

The authors’ visit was made possible through the school’s relationship with Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville, faculty said.

The authors spoke about their decadelong collaboration and said they get letters from kids who could relate to their Hank Zipzer series. The kids, Oliver said, ask her and Winkler how they know them so well.

“You write what you know,” Winkler said. “Write from your heart.”

When he was their age, Winkler told the students that he had difficulty with several subjects, including reading, spelling and math.

At age 31, he learned that he wasn’t stupid or lazy, he

said. He learned he is dyslexic.

“I had something with a name,” Winkler said.

He told the students each one of them has greatness inside them, and learning challenges have nothing to do with how brilliant they are.

He asked the children to say what they’re great at and got such answers as soccer, homework and math.

“I’ve never been great at math,” Winkler said.

After reading from two of his and Oliver’s books, Winkler took questions from students, who asked him about such topics as why he wanted to act and whether he still had his iconic leather jacket from “Happy Days.”

Winkler – whose father wanted him to take over his business of buying and selling wood – didn’t know why he wanted to be an actor, he said.

“I just know it was in me,” he said.

As for the Fonz’s jacket?

That’s in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. “Something I wore is in a museum,” Winkler said.

“That is amazing.”

A 7-year-old boy had a different type of question for Winkler: Did he still have the power to attract women?

“Ladies, watch out,” Winkler said. “This is a man after my own heart.”

8OBITUARIES PATRICIA M. MURPHY Born: June 10, 1931 Died: Feb. 14, 2014 GENEVA – Patricia M. Murphy, 82, of Geneva, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born June 10, 1931, in Chicago, the daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Murphy) Grimes.

Patricia was born and raised in Chicago and graduated from Academy of Our Lady High School.

While living in Chicago, she worked at Drake Travel and traveled extensively throughout Europe.

After moving to Geneva, Patricia worked at Community Hospital as a switchboard operator and secretary. She later worked at and retired from DuKane Industries in St. Charles.

Patricia was a hard worker, but in her free time, she loved to sew and was a loyal fan of the White Sox

and Notre Dame sports. She was very proud of her Irish heritage.

Patricia found great joy in spending time with family and friends and will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, William; daughter Sheila of Geneva; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas Grimes; and sister, Margaret Schaub.

Funeral prayers will be at 9 a.m.

Leone was a member of St. Galls Catholic Church of Elburn, the Illinois Nurses Association and a volunteer for Meals On Wheels for many years. She graduated from Sandwich High School and St. Joes School of Nursing. Her many years of nursing were working for private doctors and the last 25 years as director of nursing at Mercyville.

She is survived by one son, Edward (Carol) Zahner of St. Charles; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; four sisters, Margaret (Harry) Freeland, Joan (Byron) Curnutte, Audrey (Louis) Meyer and Alma (Lawrence) Gavin; and one brother, Edward (Nancy) Weismiller.

BATAVIA – Before Dovie Jones came into Walmart on Friday morning, she predicted some type of decoration would be put up for her last day.

What she found were “Happy Retirement” streamers, balloons, a mug and flowers, the first bouquet of which was hidden in a fitting room behind her work station.

“I knew I would get something, but not this elaborate,” Jones, 78, said with a wide smile.

Jones retired from Walmart after 21 years of full-time work between two of the company’s Tri-Cites stores.

She helped open the St. Charles and Batavia locations and closed out her career in Batavia as a fitting room associate.

Jones’ last day was filled with not only her typical duties of organizing clothes and answering the store’s phone lines, but visits from various co-workers who reached down to embrace her 4-foot-7 frame and wish her well.

It’s been a long road for Jones to finally stop working.

She first retired from Lucent Technologies in 1996 after 20 years as a repair operator at their former West Chicago site.

She could have relocated to Arkansas to keep her job, but her mind was made up to stay in St. Charles Township.

She has called the Chicago area home since she left Herrin in downstate Illinois at 18 with her then-husband, who moved to the area for a job.

“My whole life is here,” Jones said.

She says the same thing to her son, Aaron, when he tries to convince her to move back to Herrin.

He showed up at the Batavia Walmart on Friday (to surprise her) on her last day.

People who stay in the workforce after they retire are more common these days than in the past, Aaron Jones said.

“People don’t get retirement [pensions] from corporations anymore – just 401(k)s,” he said.

When she left Lucent, Jones received only half of the pension amount that she otherwise would have received had she stayed for a full 30 years.

With her daughter Niesha still in high school, she started at Walmart in 1993 while she was still with Lucent (formerly known as AT&T).

Over time, the Walmart job became a source of comfort for her after her four children moved out and started their own lives.

Jones’ last job was one in a long line of roles she has had over the years in various factories in Kane County.

Her experience has taught her to be friendly with customers and assertive with her co-workers when necessary, said Linda Brown, a women’s apparel department manager at the Batavia Walmart.

Brown is Jones’ supervisor, but Jones actually trained her when she first came to the department.

To show her appreciation for Jones, she stayed up until 2 a.m. Friday putting together a sparkly “Happy Retirement Dovie” streamer that was hanging near Jones’ work station when Jones came in Friday morning.

“Everybody can go to her and talk to her, she’s just personable,” Brown said.

Jones plans to visit her now-former colleagues in Batavia and St. Charles during her newfound free time.

And she always has been willing to travel to see her four children, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Beyond that, she just wants to rest.

“I’m just taking it easy for a while, and seeing what happens,” Jones said.

Applications are being accepted for scholarships offered through the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez announced this week in a news release.

The association will award more than $53,000 in college scholarships to students throughout the state for the 2014-15 academic year. The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only.

Perez will award one $500 scholarship.

Applicants must be permanent Illinois residents and must be a full-time student during the 2014-15 school year.

Scholarships must be used at higher learning institutions in

Illinois.

The Illinois Sheriff’s Association is also offering a Peacekeeper Scholarship this year. It is for dependents of active duty or retired law enforcement; dependents of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty; dependents of active duty or retired military or National Guard members; and dependents of military members killed in the line of duty.

GENEVA – A new franchise of Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa is scheduled to open May 1 at 11416-A S. Randall Road in the Randall Square Shopping Center in Geneva.

Local franchisees Michael and Kathy Hendershott of Blackberry Township already own a Hand and Stone location in Wheaton.

Kathy Hendershott said they opened the Wheaton location in July and expanded to Geneva.

“We wanted to do something for when my husband decides to retire, so we thought we would go ahead and get started,” Hendershott said. “We saw a franchise consultant, and he gave us five options and we saw the massage business – what better business to make everybody happy? They are happy when they leave. It’s a calm atmosphere and a great atmosphere all around.”

Hand and Stone has 140 franchise locations in 21 states and Canada, according to its website, www.handandstone.com. Physical therapist John Marco started the company in 2005, intending to bring affordable massage and facial services to more people.

“Mike was a regular massage customer. ... I went occasionally,” Hendershott said.

“I had never ever done too

many facials. Now, I have access to them at our affordable prices. We are a spa.”

Hand and Stone, which is open seven days a week, also does facial peels, microdermabrasion, hair removal and eyelash and eyebrow tinting, she said.

Hendershott said they moved to Geneva 11 years ago from Dallas when her husband was transferred by JP Morgan Chase.

Hendershott said she worked as a purchasing agent in food service manufacturing, but she was allowed to continue working at her company from home until she retired.

The Geneva location will have 3,000 square feet with 11 rooms, three for facials, the rest for massage, including a room for couples, Hendershott said.

Randall Square is anchored

by Bed, Bath and Beyond and Old Navy. It is a high-traffic retail corridor, said a spokesman for Baum Realty Group of Chicago, which negotiated the lease.

Kris Smith, director of real estate for Hand and Stone, based in Hamilton, N.J., said Geneva was a good location for the franchise.

“We feel it is a fantastic market,” Smith said. “The demographics of that market exceed our criteria when developing a Hand and Stone Spa, not only in that market, but also in that center.”

Many warm thank-yous deserved This winter has been cold. Really cold. Tonguesticking-to-the-flagpole cold.

Many of us are willing to brave it for only the few seconds it takes to run from our cars to work or the store. Then we run – or at least speed walk – back.

It’s rarely fun to go outside in the bitter cold, unless you’re dressed like you’re preparing to explore Antarctica and you have some really cool toy outside that you can’t wait to use.

There are people, however, whose jobs depend on braving the cold and winter weather conditions.

We are writing to show our appreciation.

Some, such as firefighters, law enforcement and EMTs/emergency personnel, brave the elements for our protection. When others are running away, they rush in.

For that, and all the frozen fingers that have come with it, we thank them.

Some, such as those who drive the snowplows, come out when things get really bad. They clear and salt and sand our roads so we can get where we need to go. They certainly get paid, but it’s a pretty selfless job working overnight to plow and clear the roads so they’re driveable the next day.

And, more often than not, the thanks we give them is either tailgating them down the road or complaining that they didn’t clear the road we live on soon enough.

For enduring that, and being the nameless and faceless reason that most of us have been able to arrive safely at our destinations this winter, we thank them, too.

While we’re at it, thanking a nameless and faceless group that works overnight to provide a service, we’ll thank the newspaper delivery teams.

They’re on the roads many times when the roads are the worst, trying to keep you informed despite the conditions.

The same goes for the letter carriers and the heating and HVAC specialists or construction workers who are there when you need them.

Working as the snow piles up and temperatures dip is rarely fun, but there are many in the community who swallow their apprehension and do it on a regular basis to ensure that our community runs smoothly.

For them, and all those who we missed in our assuredly incomplete list, we thank you. And we hope community members, when they see you, give you thanks, too.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Noble goals To the Editor: Bruce Rauner is a very successful business executive who is running for governor of Illinois, and I am supporting him in his candidacy for two reasons.

First, he wants to introduce term limits in this state. This is a long overdue reform that will create political integrity in a state notorious for a lack of anything resembling integrity.

Second, as a successful businessman, it is hoped that he will be able to successfully address the

financial crisis that this state has faced for so long. These are noble goals and I will support Mr. Rauner in his quest. I hope that you as a reader will do the same.

Keep in mind that this will be a tough process, but if you will write your state representative and senator, telling them that this is what you as a voter want done, it will be a good start. These people need to be reminded that they work for us, not the reverse. The state and federal legislatures both need to be told they work for us, not the powerful monies that they cater to.

These are noble goals, and they clearly support Mr. Bruce Rauner.

If all the voters don’t write their elected officials in their districts expressing their outrage, things will never change. Elected officials understand clearly that term limits will force them out of office at the end of a reasonable time, but too many feel they want to remain in office as career politicians even if they aren’t performing as supportive people representing their voters.

Separate the crops I appreciate the forum provided

The real missed opportunity by the president and Congress was the potential to stay the course that was already started and separate the crop program, primarily crop insurance, from the nutritional and food stamp program. logic in my estimation. Sen. Kirk has addressed the sugar subsidy part of the crop support. But this is just a small part, as the real need is to separate crops from nutritional programs.

I’m calling about comments made in the Sound Off about teachers. I don’t know what teacher would say, what do you like most about teaching – June, July and August. That’s ridiculous.

Honestly, what we like about teaching is the love of children and watching them with the a-ha on their face. During the day, we are with these children longer than their parents are. Do you know how many times I’ve been accidentally called mom? Then I’m a nurse; I’m a psychiatrist; I’m a social worker; and I’m the best friend. I’m not being paid to be all of that. What about the work I have to take home? Most people leave it at the job and go back the next day and complete it. Maybe you think those three months we’re off, we’re really off? Some of us are taking classes to become better teachers. And we do not get paid those three months. We get a salary divided up in 12 months. It’s just a salary, and they divide it in 12 months.

So what’s the difference? You get paid the same amount of work for the same amount of job, including the fact that you put in a lot of extra time. Plus, you spend your own money on supplies.

Teaching is not easy Every person makes a career choice. Everyone who complains about teachers having summers off, they had that option as well.

I would place a bet that if you picked one school and asked every teacher what they do in the summer, the majority would be furthering their career in education or working part time somewhere. Teaching is not an easy job. Every one of you had the option to pick that career. They need to stop whining. Teachers do not have an easy job. And I am not a teacher.

Our teachers have failed This morning, I spoke to a neighbor who is a middle school student in St. Charles. She started her sentence with “me and my friends.” Our teachers have failed.

I work with a young group of people who start their sentences the same way. I know a teacher who starts her sentence with “him and

his girlfriend.” Many young adults use went, when they should use gone. “I should have went to the store.” When I hear this, I cringe. I am embarrassed for the person. I thank the nuns who forced proper grammar on us years ago. Where are the public school teachers who allow kids to graduate from high school with such poor grammar? Hopefully, those teachers are fired. If not, our standards are sinking. Teachers are cheating their students when they do not insist on proper grammar.

Missing the indoor malls When my kids grew up, we’d be cooped up because of the weather. Sometimes, just to get out, we’d go to the mall. Maybe we’d even stop at a store or two.

We wouldn’t even think about doing that at the Commons. It’s been a lot of years, but I still don’t understand what happened there.

I sure miss the inside malls.

Forcing us out I know that Geneva School District 304 and the Geneva School Board have once again done something that the taxpayers cannot really afford.

They have indicated that they will have kindergarten all day, which sounds to me like a baby-sitting service. … It seems that the school board and the school district are doing everything they can to force people who have lived in Geneva for years and years, and live on fixed incomes, out of town.

Tired of taxes I heard that some people in Geneva want to have a new library built. I cannot see it. How many more real estate taxes do we need to keep paying? If you want a bigger library, move to Chicago. They have such a big one there. I cannot see it. With all these Kindles that people have, computers that they can read a book on, watch TV on a computer, I can’t see why a bigger library is needed. If you don’t like the Geneva library, go find a bigger one. But I am tired of paying more taxes. If you want to pay taxes, why don’t you increase how much you pay per year? Do us a favor.

I would like to thank the person who last Wednesday afternoon saw that I was nearly finished shoveling the driveway but was contemplating the last 3 feet to go. There was 3 feet of driveway near the road where the plows had pushed the road snow onto the driveway, and the snow was at least 1 – and in some places 2 – feet deep. He stopped his pickup truck and, without asking, pulled a snowblower from the back and finished the worst part of the job for me. As an added bonus, he cleared the sidewalks.

He will never know how much I appreciated his random act of kindness. He refused payment for his time and gas. But he saved me so much time, so I could run an errand for my inlaws and still go and pick up my son from school on time. Thank you, anonymous person.

For many of us, delivery of this statement evokes feelings of disappointment and maybe even gloom. Our dental hygiene regimen – all that brushing, flossing and rinsing – has somehow failed to keep the grungies from accumulating on our teeth, and now there’s a hole where healthy enamel once held fast.

The good news is that modern dentistry makes treatment of cavities virtually painless.

A little topical anesthetic, the pressure of a needle and the numbing effect of novocaine all combine to make for a procedure that is not altogether unpleasant. (Happy Dental Health Month, by the way.)

But enough about “bad” cavities.

Today, we’d like to spread the word about cavities that actually are good. Phenomenal, in fact.

For they provide shelter and save lives.

We’re talking, of course, about tree cavities.

These dark hollows, created when branches drop or excavators like woodpeckers go to work, provide near-total protection from the elements for many local mammals and birds.

Sleety rain? No big deal when you’re inside a tree.

Likewise for wind-driven snow. Even below-zero temperatures are moderated by the heat of warm bodies piled together and surrounded by layers of wood and bark.

Raccoons, opossums, flying squirrels, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers and screech owls are just a few of our year-round species that take shelter inside tree cavities.

These handy holes are also proving useful for at least one other species, one that we typically associate only with summer: eastern bluebirds. A record num-

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto ber – 88 – were recorded in December during the Christmas Bird Count, and since then several people have told me about putting mealworms out this winter for the bluebirds that are coming to their birdfeeders.

Perhaps the bluebirds have found, as did their cousins the robins, that winter food sources are fairly abundant in Kane County.

Lord knows we have no shortage of crabapples and berries, especially those on nonnative honeysuckle shrubs.

Plentiful food is reason enough to forgo a taxing migration; add in a supply of sheltered roosts and the decision to stay here is a no-brainer.

Tree squirrels are another group of animals that take full advantage of tree cavities whenever possible.

The bur oaks behind Hickory Knolls provide several such refuges, and all are currently in use. Red-bellied woodpeckers occupy one, a large honeybee colony is in another.

But none are in as high a demand as the one that overlooks our birdfeeding station.

Situated 20 feet off the ground and 30 feet from the feeders, this hole is the Taj Mahal of tree cavities. It’s spacious enough to hold at least four chunky fox squirrels, shielding them from weather and predators alike.

Several times a day we’ll look out to see the rotund rodents scampering out, one after another, like furry circus clowns streaming from a tall, vertical car.

What’s more, this cozy home has its own built-in security system.

The entry point is only a few inches in diameter – large enough to admit the squirrels, yet small enough to prevent interlopers like opossums and raccoons from forcing their way in.

Useful as they are to

wildlife, tree cavities also provide a valuable service to humans. The more hollow trees there are to provide homes for mammals and birds, the fewer animals there are living in attics, eaves, garages and sheds.

Years ago, folks used to fill holes in trees with cement, and sometimes brick and mortar.

Not only did this practice deprive animals of homes, it also hastened the tree’s destruction by interrupting natural processes. And heaven help the arborist who would eventually have to take down that concrete-laden trunk.

These days, for the most part, people let the holes in their trees be. These are the sorts of cavities we want to encourage – no filling required.

Larkin swallows Geneva in late stages for comeback win

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ELGIN – The postseason is only a few weeks away, and for stretches of Friday’s game against Larkin, the Geneva boys basketball team embraced the notion that this could be the Vikings team to net some elusive postseason hardware.

The Vikings outplayed high-flying Larkin throughout much of the first half and had a pair of leads early in the fourth quarter before the Royals rose up in emphatic fashion late for a 67-53 Upstate Eight Conference River victory.

“The sad part is we had probably about a three-, four-minute stretch in that second quarter, maybe part of that first quarter, where I thought we played so exceptionally well, I was thinking, boy, there’s no team that we could see anywhere the rest of our season we couldn’t beat if we play like that,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said.

“The sad part is we got silly and squirrely and thought we could run up and down the floor with them, and the next thing we know, we got guys that are trying to get themselves pulled out of the game because they’re too tired, and they’re wondering why. But lesson learned, hopefully.”

The Royals (22-3, 12-0 UEC River) already had taught the conference a winter-long lesson that they’re a handful, and Friday’s win nailed down an unbeaten run through the River for the back-to-back champs.

Larkin coach Deryn Carter put in a plug for a Geneva team that could finish in a tie for second place if it defeats St. Charles North next week.

ter said. “I don’t know if they’ll get it because they’re underrated, but these guys are as good as everybody we’ve played.

They’re a very good basketball team, well coached, they play hard. This is as good of a win as we’ve had all year.”

Geneva (19-5, 7-4 UEC River) trailed, 42-40, entering the fourth quarter, but took a pair

of leads early in the quarter on fast-break layups from an unlikely source – burly sophomore reserve Loudon Vollbrecht, whose ability to run the floor might have taken both teams by surprise.

But the final 6 minutes of the game belonged almost exclusively to Larkin, and in particular, senior point guard Derrick Streety, who scored 11 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth. He scored the last eight points of a swift, 10-0 Larkin burst to give the Royals a 55-46 lead midway through the fourth.

As is often the case for Larkin, big things began with pressure defense.

“Pressuring the ball speeds up players, speeds up the whole game,” said Streety, who didn’t start the game because he missed practice for a col-

lege visit to the University of Dubuque. “We tried to get them out of their comfort zone. Their comfort zone is playing offense, running an offense to the ‘T.’ They run offense all day until they get something, and that’s hard for us to try not to make a mistake the whole time.”

Carter said he sensed Geneva becoming comfortable with Larkin’s pressure and decided to ratchet it up, sending extra defenders running at ball-handlers.

“To sustain that type of pressure like our guys did for 32 minutes, that’s tough for a team to consistently beat,” Carter said. “I thought it was at a tipping point either way.

Either they were going to consistently beat us or we were going to crack them. I think we were fortunate enough, the ball bounced our way a couple times, and we got a nice run to end the game.”

Geneva forward Nate Navigato scored 15 points and had

12 rebounds while fellow junior Pace Temple also had 15 points and helped tighten the game after a 13-0 Royals run overlapping the second and third quarters made it 33-28, Larkin.

Geneva had a 28-20 lead in the second quarter and settled for a 28-26 halftime advantage.

The Vikings’ early success had plenty to do with Vollbrecht (12 points, five rebounds, blocked shot), who made all six of his field-goal attempts on the night but went 0 for 3 from the foul line.

“Obviously when you see him take a big step forward like this, he’s definitely earned some more minutes with his playing time, playing like he did tonight,” Ralston said. “He was a load.”

The Vikings’ pursuit of their third 20-plus win season in Ralston’s six-year tenure will continue with road games next week at St. Charles North and at South Elgin.

after that and remained ahead until the Wildcats’ much-anticipated shooting spurt.

The teams combined to shoot 15 for 55 (27 percent) in the first half, but Neuqua Valley started to distance itself from the war of attrition midway through the second quarter.

Valley Division Player of the Year Niki Lazar (11 points) swished a 3 to bring the Wildcats to within 15-12 at the 3:50 mark, helping set the stage for a long Moon 3-pointer that gave Neuqua Valley its first lead at 22-19 with 1:17 remaining before the break.

BATAVIA – Batavia girls basketball players are guaranteed at least one opportunity to defend their home court next week.

The Bulldogs host a Class 4A regional, and, lofty postseason aspirations notwithstanding, that first means the chance to wash clean this recently funky taste of home cooking.

Friday’s 56-49 loss to Neuqua Valley in the Upstate Eight Conference championship crossover was only the Bulldogs’ second home defeat this season – but also its second in a row.

That’s not a cue to panic, however.

“We’ve talked about regional titles, we’ve talked about 20 wins,” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said.

“Those are all things still on the table that we said, ‘They’re still there for us.’

Even though it was a loss tonight, I think we kind of got back on track with how we played.”

Batavia (18-9) ultimately became the 12th straight victim of Neuqua Valley (24-5), but fought back throughout.

Trouble was, the Wildcats responded.

“Relentlessly” so, in Jensen’s words, especially with their pressure defense.

“You feel like you have the press broken, then all of a sudden, there’s three people right on your hip looking to get a back tip,” Jensen said.

“It’s almost like, ‘We don’t care if you get by our first level, they’re still going to chase

time friend and fellow senior Erin Bayram for the team high.

“Liza kind of caught fire in the second half, but she was always our focal point for stopping,” said Wildcats sophomore guard Kai Moon, whose 15 points led the team in her return from an ankle injury.

Hannah Frazier added 13 points for Batavia, while Bayram corralled eight rebounds. The Bulldogs will host the winner of Monday’s opening-round game between Addison Trail and Elk Grove in a regional semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The Wildcats maintained control in the second half behind their depth and defense, but Batavia climbed to within 50-45 with 3:26 remaining.

Batavia, the first school not named “Geneva” to represent the River in a championship crossover, shared the conference title with the Vikings but earned the nod here because of its two regular-season wins against Geneva.

Neuqua Valley entered the game with an edge on Batavia, having handled the Bulldogs, 71-57, in Montini Christmas Tournament play in December.

The result undoubtedly hinged on free throws, with the Wildcats hitting 29 of 32 to the Bulldogs’ 13 of 25 in what were otherwise tight proceedings.

Friday’s rematch opened with two Fruendt free throws, the result of a pregame technical foul called against Neuqua Valley because of a roster error.

Recovering Collins makes college call Flynn Collins didn’t become a great soccer player by eating McDonald’s for breakfast, KFC for lunch and Subway for dinner.

Just this once, he made an exception. The Marmion senior forward figured he’d earned it.

His fast-food binge – Collins threw in Subway for something “healthysh,” he said – came on the heels of seven Flynn Collins weeks of being unable to eat solid foods in the aftermath of jaw surgery that ended his senior season.

The high-scoring forward from Batavia took the worst of a jarring collision with St. Charles East goalkeeper Mike Novotny during a match at East in September.

“As soon as I could eat food, I literally went out to three fast food restaurants

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab and just ate everything I could just because I could,” Collins said. “I felt awful the next couple days, but I missed it so much it was ridiculous.”

After a difficult fall – physically and emotionally – things are looking up for Collins, who was cleared last month to play club soccer and, more recently, committed to play college soccer at Division III Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

Not exactly big-boned to begin with, Collins said he lost 22 pounds during the fall with his mouth wired shut. Blending up peanut butter and whatever high-protein foods he and his family could think up only went so far, and his weight plummeted from 145 to 123 pounds.

“It definitely was a lot different,” Collins said. “I was a lot lighter. It was really rough because I’d feel weak, I’d feel light. I felt like I couldn’t really do anything.

I felt I’d get out of shape really fast because I had like no fat to use for energy. That was kind of rough, but eventually, I got used to it.”

Collins gradually has put the weight back on and said he’s mostly moved beyond the injury, although he’s still restoring his conditioning with his new club team, Campton United.

Quirkily enough, Novotny is also new to Campton United, so the two are club teammates.

Novotny missed most of the rest of his season, too, after the collision.

“Him and I are pretty close now,” Collins said.

“We’re kind of working on our friendship, just putting that behind us.”

Flynn Collins, Marmion boys soccer senior forward year for the Cadets, having scored 15 goals with four assists in 12 matches. He was an all-area selection and was voted team MVP. Collins said the injury might have disrupted his college recruiting momentum but also caused him to more deeply appreciate the schools that stayed with him.

His choice came down to Simpson and Loras College, with Simpson coming out ahead in part because he envisioned becoming more of a focal point in Simpson’s program.

Collins is eager to complete before heading off to college.

The collision cracked several of his teeth and he still has a missing front tooth that he anticipates being replaced in March.

“For me that’ll be like the final thing where, alright, I’m done with it – it happened, but it’s not affecting me anymore,” Collins said.

“So when that final tooth comes in, I’ll be like ‘I’m me,’ I guess.”

Spartans roll past Chargers

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com WHEATON – St. Francis boys basketball coach Bob Ward was honored before the start of Friday night’s game with Aurora Central Catholic for registering his 300th career coaching victory last week.

If the Spartans continue to play the way they did in a 6546 victory over the Chargers, he’ll have a good start to 400 before this season is through.

“We had great energy to start the game,” Ward said. “I thought we played as well we have all year long in the first quarter.”

St. Francis (11-8, 8-3 Suburban Christian Blue) displayed good intensity with its manto-man defense in the game’s opening moments and quickly jumped out to a 13-4 lead. The Spartans stretched the lead to 14 late in the quarter when 6-4 senior Kilian Brown (13 points) scored on a nice spin move in the low post.

“Then we did not defend a screen and they got a 3 at the end of the first quarter,” Ward said. “Then the energy switched to them.”

Sean Harreld hit that 3-pointer for the Chargers (317, 1-7) to cut the St. Francis lead to 22-11.

ACC clawed its way back into the contest in the second quarter, slowing down the Spartan offense by trapping out of a 2-3 zone.

The Chargers eventually pulled to within one twice late in the quarter, getting some quality play from 6-foot freshman Brett Czerak off the bench. Czerak scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half.

The Spartans led, 35-30, at intermission, then took advantage of multiple ACC turnovers at the start of the second half to blow the game open.

The Chargers turned the ball over on their first three possessions of the third quarter and four of their first five.

“The turnovers killed us,” ACC coach Nate Drye said.

“We thought that was kind of a key to the game. We thought they would struggle to score if we stayed away from giving them baskets. We gave them baskets early in the first quarter and got behind and then we stopped turning it over and we turned them over and got back in it. Then we came out in the second half and just completely laid an egg, and that was the ballgame.”

Zach Prociuk and Kevin Blank, in particular, made the Chargers pay for their miscues.

Blank scored eight of his 14 points early in the third quarter, sandwiched around eight straight points by Prociuk, who also finished with 14 points.

“We said we needed more energy at the halftime break,” said Blank, a 6-foot senior.

“We just wanted to keep working their zone, move their zone around. Then once we got the ball to our guy in the center, the zone kind of collapsed, and guys were open.”

Blank’s 3-pointer from the left corner made the score 5132 midway through the third quarter, and the Chargers never threatened after that.

“I thought we not only had energy [in the second half], I thought we were really workmanlike,” Ward said. “We didn’t turn it over, we got good shots, and we defended well.”

St. Francis finished with 15 turnovers, compared with 22 for ACC. Seven of those Charger turnovers came in the third quarter.

Jason Sullivan scored 10 points for the Spartans, who host Glenbard South tonight.

Half-court heave falls for Lutze, Eagles

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – R.D. Lutze wasn’t sure what to do after Aurora Christian’s last-second, 60-57 win over Marmion on Friday night, but he had no such uncertainty when it mattered most.

With the score tied at 57 with 1.7 seconds to go, Lutze took a tipped Marmion inbounds pass and let fly a halfcourt heave that banked in to give the Eagles a miraculous regulation victory.

The Aurora Christian student section engulfed a stunned Lutze, who stood emotionless after making his first buzzer-beater since seventh grade. The sophomore was still unsure what to say about the shot after the game.

“I’m still stunned about it, it’s almost like a dream.

As soon as I hit that I didn’t know what to do,” Lutze said.

“I don’t even remember what I did. I just stood there asking myself what just happened.

I’ve been shooting half-court shots in practice and I guess I just hit it today.”

Marmion (13-11, 4-3 SCC Blue) was down for most of

the game before going on a 7-0 run over a two-minute span to take a 57-53 lead with 2:11 to go on a pair of Tyler Maryanski free throws. The Eagles (13-10, 5-3) were able to pull even at 57 after baskets from Johnathan Harrell and Wes Wolfe. Wolfe’s runner in the lane came with 1:05 to go, setting up what Marmion hoped would be the final shot of the game.

But an errant pass fell in Harrell’s hands with 48 seconds left, providing the Eagles a shot at a final possession.

With the ball in Harrell’s hands, the senior drove and dished in the corner to Pat McNamara, who missed a 3-pointer that landed in Marmion’s hands with 1.7 seconds to go.

Out of a timeout, the Cadets were hoping the inbounds play would allow Maryanski to find Michael Sheehan for an open jump shot. As Marmion coach Ryan Paradise saw it, had Maryanski come up with the ball, Sheehan was open.

“We were actually trying to get the ball to Mike and had him wide open but they knocked the ball out of Tyler’s hands,” Paradise said. “I take

from this that our guys competed in the second half and they just hit a good shot in the end. We have enough games left where we can get back on track.”

Marmion entered play on a four-game winning streak, dispatching each opponent by double figures. After leading early, the Cadets were forced to play catch-up for most of the second half, trailing by as much as eight points at the start of the third quarter.

With Aurora Christian leading 53-48 after a Harrell basket, Marmion got a threepoint-play and a fall-away jumper in the lane from Jordan Glasgow that tied the game at 53 with 3:04 to go in the fourth quarter.

And what was the aftermath once you learned?

Then I’m texting everyone in my contact list … a big group chat that was very exciting.

What was in your mind during the waiting?

Those teams could easily obtain that score, so that’s what made it nervous for us, but it ended up working out

What’s the morale been like this season?

Just all season, you know, it’s keep working hard in the gym. What you do in practice really comes down to what you do in the meet. So just been working hard all season. … Last year we were a little upset with our [state] finish of eighth place out of all of them. This year, we focused on not only making it to state, but what can we do when we get to state.

How is the gym and atmosphere at Palatine?

It’s crazy, because they’ve got all the stands going up, but the gym’s really nice, and it’s just a whole different experience than all the other meets. Getting into that state series, it’s just a lot more serious and a lot more focused going into it. … It’s just, I think, the pressure you have riding on yourself when you’re up there in that position. To do well not only for your team, but yourself, as well, that

you’ve got to do well there in order to get to state.

I know we’re in the Winter Olympics now, but how much gymnastics do you watch during the Summer Games?

Oh my gosh, I love watching the gymnastics in the Olympics. That’s one thing that always motivated me, getting me back in the gym.

Seeing those girls do what they do, and then it just gives me motivation when I get in the gym.

Do you do much cross training, or do you find gymnastics workouts do the trick by themselves?

We don’t necessarily run a lot. It’s a lot more strength and being able to lift your body weight, because that’s really what you do in gymnastics. You’re lifting your own body weight. Over the summer, I will go to, like, LA Fitness or XSport to get just a little extra time, but now, in-season, I don’t have much time. I mean, this keeps you fit enough.

‘Great win’ propels Kaneland girls hoops into postseason KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE MAPLE PARK – To earn a share of the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title, all the Sycamore girls basketball team needed was a win at Kaneland.

But the Knights were not ready to back down on Friday’s senior night.

The Knights only trailed once in the game and, with the pressure on late in the fourth quarter, Kaneland sank six consecutive free throws to seal a 40-35 win. Senior Caroline Heimerdinger led all scorers with 14 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. “[We played] really well. I was really happy,” Heimerdinger said. “We definitely just tried to take it to them and keep up the pressure. We all did really well all

around with great movement and everything.”

Sycamore (19-7, 8-2 NI Big 12 East) only led midway through the first quarter after a Julia Moll layup made the score 6-4. The Knights regained the lead but the Spartans kept the score within reach and Kaneland led, 1713, at the break.

Kaneland (13-14, 5-5) pushed the lead out to eight toward the end of the third quarter. A Bailey Gilbert 3-pointer sparked a 6-0 Spartans run to close out the quarter. It was Gilbert’s first field goal of the game.

“I think we played great.

We held Bailey Gilbert to where we wanted to,” Kaneland senior Kelly Wallner said. “Our defense was amazing and I really think we came out with energy and played great.”

Wallner was the backbone of the Kaneland frontcourt as she pulled down 14 rebounds.

Sycamore only grabbed a handful of offensive rebounds and was outrebounded, 29-15, overall.

“We have been working on rebounding a lot in practice.

We did a ton of rebounding drills,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “Earlier in the season, we were struggling tipping the ball and trying to get rebounds. But our kids have been going up stronger.”

Wallner finished with nine points to go along with her 14 rebounds.

Amber Winquist-Bailey and Marina Schaefer each scored four points apiece.

Nine Knights scored in the game.

Kaneland and Sycamore begin play in the 3A Plano Regional next week.

“It was a huge game. It was great to beat them with regionals coming up. Everyone now knows that we can beat them,” Wallner said. “And, as a senior, beating them on our last game on this floor was awesome. Great win for us.”

BOYS BASKETBALL Kaneland 63, Yorkville 55: At Yorkville, Kaneland (13-7, 4-3 NI Big 12 East) made 30-of-38 free throws to seal a narrow conference win. The Knights led, 44-43, after three quarters.

Ty Carlson scored 18 points to pace a balanced Kaneland attack. Dylan Vaca followed with 10 points, while Cole Carlson, Drew David and John Pruett each chipped in nine.

St. Charles co-op gymnast Kelly Gorniak sent arguably the happiest text of the season to date Thursday night, trumpeting the news that the team had advanced to the Friday and Feb. 22 state meet as an at-large entry. St. Charles scored a runner-up 143.15 at sectionals Tuesday, but was forced to wait two nights to see if it would make the state cut. Gorniak proved more antsy than most, traveling to the state’s fourth and final sectional Thursday night at Niles North. Geneva is starting a kids wrestling club. Coaches from Geneva High School and both Geneva North and Geneva South middle schools are volunteering as coaching staff as well as several dads in the area.

Coaches will work with the kids on their technique and overall performance. There will be several tournaments for the wrestlers to test themselves against local competition.

Practices will be held in the wrestling room at Geneva High School and will start Tuesday and will run through May 22.

There will be no practice the week of spring break, March 31 through April 4.

Practice schedule is as follows: Monday 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (optional); Tuesday 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Thursday 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Ozzie’s Home Run and Walk 5K set for May 31

The Kane County Cougars will host Ozzie’s Home Run and Walk 5K at 8 a.m. May 31. Registration is open for the event at kccougars.com and racetime.info. Ozzie’s Home Run and Walk 5K will start and finish on the field at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, with the finish line at home plate.

Participants will be seen on the stadium’s videoboard through a livefeed camera and can receive a high-five from Ozzie T. Cougar on the final stretch of the race inside the ballpark. Families with children are encouraged to participate as strollers are permitted and there is a special discounted rate for participants between 5 and 18 years old. The first 250 registrants will receive a commemorative Cougars/Ozzie race drawstring bag along with a complimentary ticket voucher for the June 6 game, where all participants will be recognized. The top three male and female finishers in 14 age division categories will win a customized race medal with the Ozzie’s Home Run and Walk logo. Amazing grace in face of adoption grief Oh, how I do hate it when my friends suffer. This week, though, one of my pals in the Motherhood is truly suffering. A mommy who’d already fallen in love with the promise and joy of the second baby she’d hoped to adopt, and who, with her husband, had already traveled several states away to meet and cuddle and bathe and watch over this newborn little one as she slept, got her heart broken when the baby’s birth mother had a change of heart.

This can’t be happening, I thought, when she texted the news to me Wednesday night. But it was and it did.

Loss and untold grief, of the sort that can fell even the sturdiest among us, is the risk we take when we choose parenthood. Many don’t understand this at the outset, but those who pursue adoption? Like my friend and her dear husband, who’d already made room in their hearts and prepared their home and their new family for this new baby? They surely do. We don’t want to think the unthinkable will ever happen, like a miscarriage, as I and so many other women have suffered, or

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose some other grief – in this case, an adoption that doesn’t-quite-happen – but it can and it does.

No one knows what the universe has in store for these two families, or for the precious baby who stole their hearts, but I cannot help but be proud of my friend.

I admire the truly selfless way she approaches adoption, with a spirit of great love for the biological families involved. In fact, just as her heart was just breaking, and even before she surrendered this baby, she asked us to pray for strength for the baby’s mother.

Wow. Who knows what impact my friend has already had on this sweet child’s life? Or how she may already have improved it, by simply showering her

steady brand of calm presence on her and her family?

This, like their first, was to be an open adoption. Perhaps without realizing it, she modeled her way of risking, loving and even mothering during the brief time they shared with this new baby’s family (who, no doubt, are going through their own intensely difficult time).

That is a huge gift to this child, whether she ever learns of it or not. This whole thing reminds me of that line in Shakespeare’s “As You Like it,” wherein the playwright posits, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”

Perhaps, though the knowledge that we might unwittingly have some cosmic role to play in each other’s lives is little comfort at a time like this. In spite of her grief, though, and the myriad other emotions she no doubt feels, my friend managed to think of this new baby first.

“Please pray that her life is good and full of the joy we wish she’ll have,” she asked.

We will, dear friend, we will. And we’ll pray the same for you. I am so moved by the love that would inspire such a sentiment, and admire the courage it took for her and her husband to risk loving in the first place.

We can never know how long we’ll be afforded the privilege of caring for the children placed in our arms, however they happen to come to us. But bearing-up under impossible, King- Solomon-esque situations and having the wherewithal to put children first, no matter the storm of grief that threatens to swallow us whole? That’s what being a mother is all about.

Author’s note: In spite of their heartbreak, this couple remains committed to adopting a second child. They know that there will always be children who need families and are certain that the child meant to join their family is out there among them.

‘Game of Thrones’ star Harington travels from the Wall to big screen in ‘Pompeii’

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post This is how a hit television show can transform an actor’s life: A few years before starting his multi-year stint as Jon Snow on HBO’s massively successful fantasy series “Game of Thrones,” Kit Harington was just another 18-year-old Brit, backpacking down the East Coast of the U.S., looking for a warm bed but facing dwindling funds on the last stop of his trip, which happened to be Washington.

Every cheap room seemed to be booked, and it was getting late when he finally made his way to a hostel.

“They said, ‘Well, you can stay in the hammock out back,’” he said. “So, I slept one night in a hammock, and then they put me in a room at the top of the building where there was a lovely but rather raving mad homeless woman that was in the room. And there was a tropical thunderstorm, and I remember being in this hostel on the top bunk with a raving homeless woman, and the lightning was flashing outside, and I thought, where am I?” And where is he now? The 27-year-old is headlining his first movie, the disaster epic “Pompeii,” where he dons little more than a leather kilt and eye-poppingly chiseled abs. He plays Milo, a gladiator who thinks he’ll face his biggest challenges in the arena, not realizing that Mount Vesuvius is about to blow. Harington came back to Washington this week and admitted he’s enjoyed quite the upgrade in lodging since his last visit.

Television has become a powerful platform for actors. The length of a series gives performers time to explore the nuances of a character, and TV producers tend to take greater risks than film financiers. Becoming a movie star seems the next logical step, and yet it’s hard to imagine a film giving Harington more exposure than “Thrones” has. The show is just one of the popular series – “Breaking Bad,” “House of Cards,” “Orange Is the New Black” – that people watch in binges.

“Pompeii” director Paul W.S. Anderson (the man behind “Resident Evil” and its many successors) knows all about that. He’d missed out on the early “Game of Thrones” mania with a busy filming schedule, but when his wife, actress Milla

Jovovich, told him he had to watch the series, he gave the show a try.

“I watched the first episode, and I was so hooked, I watched the first two seasons in 48 hours, like a nonstop ‘Game of Thrones’-a-thon,” he said by phone from London. “And I think it’s a wonderful, wonderful series and a wonderful cast, but for me in the 48 hours of the condensed first two seasons, the person who really jumped out was Kit Harington playing Jon Snow. I thought this guy was just a movie star waiting to explode.”

Many from the cast of “Pompeii” have benefitted from the exposure of compulsively watchable television shows. The villain, a corrupt senator who has his eye on Milo’s true love, is played by Kiefer Sutherland, whose movie career fizzled before he found new life as Jack Bauer on “24.” Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko on “Lost”) plays another gladiator, Atticus, who becomes Milo’s only friend.

This comes at a time when Matthew McConaughey is Oscar-nominated for “Dallas Buyers Club” while also starring in the HBO series “True Detective.”

“I think it speaks volumes about where TV is at the moment,” Harington said. “A lot of actors are taking TV scripts far more seriously now. You have some great directors moving into TV; you’ve got some great writers writing for TV. I think it was always sort of a taboo around TV: Are you a TV actor or a movie actor?

And that’s sort of disappeared.”

Playing Jon Snow, stationed at the Wall in the frigid northern region of Westeros, Harington’s costumes consist of layers of fur and leather. It’s reasonable to think there’s a gladiator hiding under there, but in person, in a charcoal button-down shirt and jeans, Harington looks slim. With the exception of his signature wavy locks and hint of a beard, there are few reminders that he also plays killing machines on occasion. (And will again – he’ll play a British spy in the movie version of “Spooks.”) As so many other movie actors do these days, Harington transformed his body for the role.

“He was not a gladiator when I met him,” Anderson said. “He said, ‘Look, I read what’s in the script, and I’m not that person, but I’ll become that person for you.’ And he definitely did.”

Five weeks before filming, he started bulking up, eating 4,000 calories a day plus protein shakes and started a regimen of heavy weightlifting. He gained about 25 pounds before switching to a 2,000-calorie diet with gym sessions three times a day, six days a week.

He also learned some new skills on “Pompeii” that came in handy playing Jon Snow. The disaster movie is riddled with combat scenes, and when Harington wasn’t filming, he was usually learning some new bit of fight choreography.

“I went straight from ‘Pompeii’ to ‘Thrones,’ and I went back a noticeably better swordsman,” Harington said. And, as “Thrones” fans (who haven’t gotten around to reading all the books George R.R. Martin has churned out) will want to know – is that going to be important for his character?

“There’s a lot of sword fighting in this season,” Harington said.

• “Pompeii” runs 102 minutes and opens Feb. 21. The film is rated PG-13 for intense battle sequences, disaster-related action and brief sexual content.

Journals are a last link to deceased sister’s life Dear Abby: My sister died suddenly. She hadn’t been ill, and it was a shock. Although she tried hard to have a relationship with me over the years, I had trouble relating to her and we weren’t close.

I am sorry to say that I never took the time to get to know her. I’m left now with many questions about the sister I always had, but never really knew.

As her next of kin, I’m responsible for packing up her things, and I came across several journals. I would like to read them because I feel they would help me to understand her better, but I also feel it might be disrespectful to go through something of hers that was so personal.

Colon cancer is result of both behavior and genes Dear Doctor K: During a screening colonoscopy, my doctor found a polyp in my colon. Does this mean I have cancer?

Dear Reader: Colon polyps are common, non-cancerous growths of tissue inside the colon, or large intestine. Some of them are benign. However, other colon polyps can progress into colon cancer.

These are called adenomatous polyps.

Overall, only a small percentage of adenomas progress to cancer, but it’s not currently possible to accurately predict which ones will do so. So generally they are removed.

Adenomatous polyps progress to cancer as the result of changes in certain genes inside the cells of the polyp. (I’ve put an illustration of how a polyp can turn into cancer on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) Every human cell has certain genes that, when turned on, can cause the cell to start multiplying uncontrollably.

Fortunately, those “oncogenes” are generally turned off. Our cells also have certain tumor-suppressor genes that stop a cell from multiplying uncontrollably. Also fortunately, those genes generally are turned on.

A colonoscopy is designed to find growths on the colon wall before they have a chance to turn

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff into cancer. During this screening test, your doctor inspects your colon with a colonoscope – a thin, lighted, flexible tube fitted with a video camera.

A colonoscope can also grab and snip off any small polyps it encounters. (If a polyp is larger, surgery may be required to remove it.)

If a polyp is not removed, it will continue to grow larger and possibly become cancerous. The larger the polyp, the greater the chance it contains cancerous cells. However, it usually takes several years for a polyp to change to a cancer.

People with one adenomatous polyp are at greater risk for developing others. In fact, it is not unusual for more than one adenomatous polyp to be discovered during a single colonoscopy. So, if you had an adenomatous polyp, you were probably advised to get another colonoscopy in two to five years.

How soon you need to return depends largely on the size of the polyps found in the first exam. If no adenomatous polyps are found,

generally a repeat colonoscopy is recommended in seven to 10 years.

In the meantime, certain steps may help lower your risk of colon cancer: • Eat less meat. Eat minimal red meat – especially processed or cured meats.

• Follow a healthy diet. Increase your consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

Extra fat, especially around the waist, increases your chances of developing colon cancer.

• Don’t smoke. Smoking increases the risk of colon cancer.

You may sense a contradiction.

I said that colon cancer is the result of certain genetic changes – but I also said that it is caused by behavior (eating red meat, smoking, becoming overweight).

So which is it?

It’s both. The behaviors affect the genes. They produce mutations in the genes, causing them to be inappropriately turned on and off. You should do everything you can to minimize your risk for this cancer.

Teen has to choose between grandparents and mother Dr. Wallace: When I was 6, my parents divorced and I went to live with my grandparents, who live on their farm. I am now 14, so I have lived with my grandparents for over eight years and I have grown to love them very much. I also love being on the farm. I have my own pet animals and I’m active in the 4-H Club at school.

My grandmother is more a mother to me than my real mom.

About a month ago, my mother got married and now wants me to come live with her and my stepfather in Chicago. I don’t want to. My mother is almost a stranger to me now, and her new husband really is a stranger.

I enjoy the school I go to and I have a lot of friends. I don’t want to lose all this and start out new in Chicago. I’m sure my mother loves me and wants to make up for all the time we’ve been separated, but I’m not a child anymore.

I’m a young lady, and it’s too late for her to capture my younger years.

My mother said it was my decision and she will respect whatever I decide. My grandparents also say it’s up to me to make a choice. Would I be considered selfish if I didn’t move in with my mother? I know she really wants me to.

Dear Allison: I think you should call your father immediately and resume your loving and close relationship with him.

Of course, mom will not be thrilled with your decision, so you should make sure you constantly tell mom that you love her and appreciate her effort to be a wonderful parent.

If you would like to count more at the bridge table, first constantly count away from it.

During the day, count anything and everything: the steps you take, the white vehicles on the road, the pedestrians, the cars of a railroad train, whatever.

This week we have been looking at counting. The most common defensive count signal is an echo, a high-low, to show a doubleton. Often the signaler is hoping to gain a ruff. But occasionally, high-low will indicate “remaining count” – the number of cards still held by that defender.

This deal is a textbook example. How should the defenders card to defeat three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest club?

North’s two-heart response was a transfer bid, showing five or more spades and at least zero points. Then his three-no-trump rebid offered South a choice of games.

West leads the club six. East wins with his ace and returns the nine, high from a remaining doubleton. When South plays his queen (or jack), West should be aware that if East had started with the A-J-9-2 (or A-Q-9-2) of clubs, he would have led back the two, not the nine. So, to keep communication with his partner, West drops the club five at trick two.

Now South is sunk. He would probably run his diamonds before taking the spade finesse, but East would win with his king and lead his last club to kill the contract.
