By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A freestanding building at 22 N. Third St. in Geneva is for sale or lease, according to Sperry Van Ness commercial real state in Geneva.

Built in 1942, the property is for lease or listed for sale at $900,000.

“It’s very unique in that it has a parking lot with 20 spaces,” broker Neil Johnson said. “It’s essentially 5,000 square feet on two levels. ...

A Third Street property with

its own parking lot – I don’t know if there is another one like it.”

The property is currently vacant, but various retail stores have been at that location, Johnson said, including Pariscope Design, JC Licht – both of which moved – and most recently the business office for Tallgrass retirement community.

Johnson said most of the interest in the property is for a restaurant, but that would have to be a sale because the owner will not invest in the infrastructure for a restau-

rant tenant.

The property owner, former Geneva resident Penny Harrison, who now lives in Portland, Ore., said the building served as the family’s retail store before it was leased for other businesses. Harrison said she was born and raised in Geneva, and graduated with the class of 1962.

“We hope to find someone who will be a real asset to the community and help maintain its retail nature,” Harrison said. “I have loyalty to the community. It’s a real special place.”

Man charged with 3rd DUI

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A 50-year-old man with a history of driving under the influence was charged with drunken driving after getting his car stuck in the snow, according to a Kane County sheriff report.

Police were called to North Mill Creek Boulevard near Geneva about 1 Mark L. a.m. Feb. 7 and Trainer found Mark L. Trainer trying to dig his vehicle out of the snow with a window scraper, police reported.

Trainer, of the 0N400 block of Dooley Drive near Geneva, reportedly smelled of alcohol and lost his balance

during field sobriety tests.

After arresting Trainer, police learned it was his third DUI, and his driver’s license was revoked for DUI-related charges, according to the report.

An assistant state’s attorney reportedly authorized felony DUI charges against Trainer.

Kane County court records show he was charged with aggravated DUI for driving with a revoked license and aggravated DUI because it was his third violation.

Court records indicate Trainer pleaded guilty May 2013 to a 2012 DUI charge out of St. Charles and was sentenced to a year of supervision.

He is expected in court Thursday for a status hearing.

Man pleads guilty to trespassing

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A man accused of entering a St. Charles apartment and threatening a resident has pleaded guilty to criminal trespass to a residence, Kane County court records Marquis K. show.

Marquis K. Walker Walker, 25, submitted the plea Feb. 5 to Judge Clint Hull.

He was sentenced to 24 months of conditional discharge and 132 days in the Kane County jail, but he will receive credit for 66 days served, records show.

Other charges against him – home invasion and aggravated assault – were dismissed, according to records.

Walker was arrested Dec. 2 after he pushed his way into an apartment in the 100 block of South 17th Street in St. Charles and threatened the resident with a butcher knife, police have said.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Report: Aurora man accused of battering pregnant woman

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – An Aurora man is expected in Kane County court this month on charges that he battered a pregnant woman in Sugar Grove.

Paul M. Gonzalez, 23, of the 2000 block of West Illinois Avenue, was charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated

battery of a pregnant person and two counts of domestic battery.

According to a Kane County sheriff report, Gonzalez and the woman Paul M. were arguing Gonzalez about money before he threw a cellphone at her. He also hit her in the face,

brought her down to the floor, hit her repeatedly and kicked her in the abdomen, police reported, noting the incident happened in the 0-100 block of Cedar Gate Circle.

The woman – who was five months pregnant – was hospitalized, according to the report.

Gonzalez is expected in court Feb. 26 for a status hearing.

The winner will receive two round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C., for the unveiling of their work, which will hang in the Capitol complex for the next year.

Prestige Millwork in Geneva closes its doors after 36 years

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After 36 years in business, Prestige Millwork Inc., at 2526 Keslinger Road in Geneva, has closed its doors.

Its owner blamed the lackluster economy and big-box competition among the reasons.

Prestige Millwork started in 1978 in a rented space on the corner of River and State streets.

“We were one of first ones to go into the window and door business,” business and property owner Ralph DeGroot said. “It was very specialized then.”

DeGroot, a Wheaton resident, said now that big-box stores also sell high-end window and door products, consumers can get them cheaper, willing to take their chances with warranties and installation.

“The economy is really tough out there for just about everybody,” DeGroot said.

“We used to be a small business in a small town. We did the best product, and we still are No. 1. But the economy being what it is, people don’t want to spend a lot of money.”

He said when he would get customers, they might wait two or three years before following through.

“At one time, I had 12 employees, including myself.

Then, I was down to four people,” DeGroot said. “We fought it to the end. We did everything [we] could do. We cut overhead ... I worked for nothing for a couple years. Then you hit that brick wall.”

The harsh winter was a factor, DeGroot said, as people cannot get windows installed during bitter cold and lots of snow. His oldest daughter, who used to manage the business, is among those out of work, he said.

“We went as long as we could,” DeGroot said. “And I’m proud of that. We’ll land on our feet, but I never expected to retire this way.”

The property is listed for sale through Sperry Van Ness commercial real estate in Geneva.

The Prestige building was built in 1988 and is 7,000 square feet. It is listed for $650,000. Neil Johnson, a broker for Sperry Van Ness, said the property is well-maintained and has flexibility because of its business

zoning classification.

“It’s a very nice property.

They took wonderful care of it,” Johnson said. “It’s very flexible, given the B4 zoning.

The properties along that

street are retail, medical and industrial. It’s directly across from the entrance to [Delnor] Hospital. ... It has unique signage on a busy road.”

About 1,400 square feet is

What it’s like to be on a volunteer snowmobile safety team

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com When Ron Julian wears his yellow-green vest on the Great Western Trail, riders know he isn’t playing around.

Julian wore the vest last week as he checked the insurance paperwork of an Elgin man who was stopped on the trail near Hanson Road in unincorporated Kane County. Next to him was Rick Splittgerber, a Kane County Forest Preserve police officer.

Splittgerber wrote the man a ticket for not having his snowmobile registered in Illinois.

“We just don’t want anybody hurting themselves. It’s pretty easy to do,” Julian said during the stop.

Julian, 60, is one of 12 people who make up the Forest Preserve’s Volunteer Snowmobile Safety Patrol team. The volunteer patrol started in 2009 in

response to a few snowmobile crashes at least two years before on the forest preserve trails, Splittgerber, the patrol’s team leader, said. Julian became one of the first volunteers after he met Splittgerber, who was taking Julian’s snowmobile safety course at the time.

Volunteers use their own snowmobiles, and Julian’s sled of choice is a red Yamaha Venture 1000cc snowmobile. Before he heads out, Julian typically puts on sweatpants covered by leather bib overalls, a waterproof coat, gloves, boots and of course, the safety vest.

His snowmobile includes a first-aid kit – all volunteers are trained in first aid and CPR – and snowmobile safety brochures.

Julian’s volunteer shifts vary by the amount of activity Forest Preserve Police expect on the trails.

That could mean a couple of

hours during the day, or a fivehour night shift that ends just before the trails’ 11 p.m. closing time.

Julian doesn’t mind the hours and puts up with the cold because he loves riding and being outdoors. He said he’s been on snowmobiles ever since he first rode with his father at age 12 or 13.

“It’s pretty out here – the scenery is really nice,” said Julian, a Campton Hills resident. “I saw four deer here before I drove in.”

Julian also can identify with many of the avid riders who use trails in multiple states.

When he is not in Kane County, Julian can be found riding his snowmobile near his Florence County cabin in northern Wisconsin.

When he rides on the trails, Julian is usually flagged down by riders looking for landmarks or the nearest gas station.

During quiet patrols, he will look for any loose signs or fallen tree branches to clear off the trails.

The snowmobile safety volunteers always have to patrol in pairs. Since the volunteers cannot initiate a traffic stop, they assist with paperwork checks only when an officer is present, Splittgerber said. The night patrols can be the same as on regular roads – officers are on the lookout for any signs of intoxication.

Splittgerber and Julian on Feb. 5 knew they couldn’t stick around Hanson Road for too long – riders will likely tip each other off when there is a patrol with police on the trail. Julian predicted that the trails would be quiet that evening as temperatures slid down to the single digits.

“We’ve been lucky to have a lot of snow ... but when it’s below zero and 20 mph winds, it’s a little rough,” he said.

North Aurora trustees to work on strategic goals

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village Board trustees will decide what the strategic goals of the village should be during a strategic planning workshop set for Saturday.

“This is something that was important for the mayor and board to do,” North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco said. “Everything that is discussed gets put into a plan for approval.”

The workshop, which is open to the public, will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the banquet facility at the Fox Valley Country Club, 2500 N. River Road, North Aurora.

The workshop likely will last all day, Bosco said.

“There will be open conversations to get trustees talking about different things,” Bosco said.

This is the first time in eight years the village has had a strategic planning workshop, Bosco said. The strategic plan will help provide direction to staff, Bosco said.

“We take these goals and create action steps,” he said.

Along with the strategic planning workshop, the village is working to update its comprehensive plan, which is a vision for how the village should be developed. The village received a $100,000 grant to update the plan.

CHARLES Pension reform among issues in ST. Police: Bus stop incident race for 65th Dist. representative not of malicious nature

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Pension reform is one of the issues facing candidates in the race for 65th District state representative.

Geneva Library Board Trustee Steve Andersson, Geneva resident Daniel Ugaste of Geneva and Elgin resident Debbie Miller are seeking the Republican nomination in the March 18 primary. There are no Democratic candidates running for the seat in the primary.

The three are running for the seat currently held

by State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, who is not seeking re-election. He first was elected to the House in 1999. The district represents parts of Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles,

Campton Hills, Plato Center, South Elgin, Hampshire and Huntley.

All the candidates agree that the pension reform legislation approved last year by the Illinois General Assembly does not go far enough.

Lawsuits filed by public labor unions and retirees have challenged the constitutionality of the legislation.

Among other things, the legislation includes reducing annual cost-of-living-adjustments, phasing in increases in retirement ages, instituting a pensionable salary cap and reducing employees’ contributions by one percentage point.

“I’m sure it doesn’t go far enough,” Miller said. “We have this mandate that we have to have enough money to pay our public employees when they retire. On the other hand, the people have to pay for it. We have to work it out so that it is affordable, and works

for everyone. We need to make it work for everyone.”

Ugaste said he didn’t want “to take from anybody what they’ve earned in the past.”

“Something more has to be done,” Ugaste said. “That at best was a first step. We need to look at further reforms, such as raising the age, capping the amount anyone can receive, and whether people should be able to receive two pensions versus just one.”

Andersson said he hopes the courts provide direction as they look at the constitutionality of the legislation.

“What I’m hoping is that whatever the courts decide, that they provide us a road map,” he said. “If they uphold it as constitutional, that’s great. If they don’t, they’ll tell us where the defects are in the law. If they do that, then we can pass meaningful reform and hopefully get it right a second time.”

“It was just good intentions, nothing malicious,” St. Charles Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said.

A 13-year-old girl was waiting for the school bus at Turnberry Road and Royal Queens Court on Tuesday morning when a motorist approached her and said, “It’s cold out, so get in the car, and I’ll take you to school,” police reported.

The girl refused, police said.

Police issued a bulletin about the incident Wednesday. The man was identified

through follow-up by an officer, Blackwell said.

Police described him as an older resident of the neighborhood who regularly drives in the area and innocently stopped to offer three children a ride because of the extreme cold.

“I think if they knew one another, it wouldn’t be as alarming as it was,” Blackwell said.

Adults should be careful about approaching children, Blackwell said.

“If you don’t know someone, especially a teenager or a child, I would not approach them,” she said, noting such behavior likely would cause alarm.

No charges were filed in the incident, Blackwell said.

The St. Charles Police Department continues to urge citizens to call 911 when they encounter anything suspicious.

USPS needs transformation THE WASHINGTON POST To understand how much trouble the U.S. Postal Service faces, consider that its $5 billion loss in fiscal 2013 represented a major improvement over the previous year’s $15.9 billion loss.

Now comes a sign that realism might, at long last, be taking hold in Congress. Sens. Thomas R. Carper, D-Del., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., have moved through the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee a bipartisan bill that offers the Postal Service a measure of genuine financial relief in return for a measure of genuine cost-reducing structural reform.

The heart of the bill reduces the personnel costs that currently account for 80 percent of the Postal Service’s annual budget. Specifically, it would require a significant portion of postal retirees to move from the health insurance program for federal employees, which they currently use, to Medicare.

In addition to the health care swap, the legislation would impose a de facto requirement that the Postal Service’s long-standing request to end costly Saturday delivery be met in two years, and it would give the service greater leverage in collective bargaining and negotiations with the Postal Regulatory Commission.

Similar in its broad outlines to a proposal President Obama previously floated in his budget, the Carper-Coburn bill is a far cry from the transformation that the U.S. Postal Service truly needs. A more ambitious House bill, authored last year by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., called for an immediate end to Saturday delivery and the creation of a commission that would close unneeded facilities; the Carper-Coburn bill would protect postal infrastructure for two years.

Still, the benefit-to-bailout ratio in Carper-Coburn is better than that in previous Senate postal legislation. That alone makes it a step in the right direction.

Making a compelling case for boredom If I had a nickel for every time I whined to my mother, “I’m bored,” I could buy a seat in the U.S. Congress.

Before my three older, larger, stronger brothers shipped off to boarding schools, I was too busy getting pounded on to be bored. When gone, they left me with only the family cat and a parent-regulated half hour of TV a day for distractions.

So, when not in an after-school pickup baseball game in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, or when my mother reneged on another game of canasta, I was forced to concoct worlds only I inhabited.

My favorite ploy included strapping on my Fanner 50 pistol and gun belt, then imagining my bedroom as the Red Dog Saloon or a desert butte where my stories

Each plot spun out spontaneously, complete with character voices, sound effects (I was terrific at galloping horses and gunshot ricochets) and mountain (couch) climbing. Acting out narratives in fabricated settings eventually turned into a passion for writing fiction; both exercises invented human beings as vivid to me as those drawing breath–and, in some cases, more so.

If I’d been glued to TV, video games, Facebook or iPhone, I’d probably have let my imagination rot. At this year’s Super Bowl party, a friend declared, “Kids today are so lazy they don’t want to make a buck shoveling driveways.” I disagreed, opining it wasn’t laziness that kept them indoors, but the plethora of screens demanding their attention.

to kill boredom and, thus, youthful creativity. However, author Evgeny Morozov concludes that “Angry Birds” and Twitter may not be the Snake Sidewinders of the new millennium. Some online offerings serve to guide the addicted screen watcher to new thoughts and new creations.

“The trick is to honor and celebrate both [radical distractions and radical boredom] – and not to settle for their tepid, mediocre versions,” he writes.

According to Morozov, Malcolm McCullough, in “Ambient Commons,” “celebrates technologies that can make us more alert to the world ... from media facades that eschew pictorial images to devices that monitor light pollution– capable of sharpening our focus ... .”

‘In the right mindset’ Marmion’s Jimenez dialed in as he seeks fourth title

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com AURORA – Johnny Jimenez breezed in from an afterschool study hall earlier this week, shot through the doors of the Marmion wrestling room and answered the casual questions about where he had been.

Within moments, the senior 126-pounder from St. Charles had changed out of his uniform and into garb more suitable for the mat.

The accessories included a firm stare that seems to be perpetual.

Jimenez must finish in fourth place or better at this weekend’s Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional to have a chance at his fourth career state championship. Eleven athletes accomplished the feat before him, and two others with whom he has ties are bidding for the same glory this month.

All this occurs to Jimenez, who is bound for Wisconsin win or lose, yet he insists it rolls away from his consciousness whenever he assumes his stance. The same way everything else does.

“I kind of try to keep it like it’s not too big of a deal,” Jimenez said. “I don’t want to psyche myself out, so it’s just another match. I’ve been to the state finals before, so I don’t like always making it a bigger deal than it should be.”

His teammates know the drill, but then again, leaving Jimenez’s success off their lips is easier when they’re shooting for their own. Marmion captured the first two state titles in program history in 2010 – Jimenez’s older brother, Nico, triumphed at 171 – and the Cadets have been a podium staple ever since.

The Cadets jumped from 2A to 3A in that span, but that hardly has fazed them.

Jimenez’s mat room demeanor remains a reflection.

“I can feel that he kind of beats up on me a little more than he usually does,” said senior 113-pounder Anthony Bosco of St. Charles. “He’s definitely in the right mindset going into this tournament.”

Second-year Cadets coach Ryan Cumbee knew a little about Jimenez’s budding reputation upon joining the progam from his alma mater, Providence, where he had been an assistant.

Jimenez had wrestled just 23 matches as a sophomore – the season before Cumbee arrived – after recovering from a midseason appendectomy.

Cumbee believes part of the reason Jimenez is wrestling full seasons again hinges on the fusion of cultures in the Cadets’ mat room.

Mooseheart game change official MOOSEHEART – The Mooseheart boys basketball team will play Niles Notre Dame on Sunday in the Conference Challenge at Northside Prep, Ramblers coach Ron Ahrens said Thursday.

Kaneland track star shifts focus to upcoming season QUICK READ Kevin Druley Nathaniel Kucera applied to Stanford in the fall without a safety school in his back pocket.

Even as other universities coveted the Kaneland track standout, he kept a distance because he pined for the palm trees of Palo Alto, Calif.

That’s the quiet confidence in Kucera, whose ascent with the Knights hit its most recent high when he anchored Kaneland’s Class 2A state champion 4x800-meter relay last spring.

Two weeks Nathaniel later, Kucera Kucera dazzled with the top individual 800 at the Midwest Distance Gala, appearing on Stanford’s radar and setting off a recruitment that culminated with his humbling acceptance earlier this week.

“It was a huge shock, a huge relief and a wave of excitement to know I could get into such a school with that academic regard and be able to run,” Kucera said.

And run he will, just not before he does a few more things for the Knights. Or lobbies to.

Kucera approached Kaneland coach Eric Baron shortly after his 1:51.33 won

the 800 at the Midwest Distance Gala at Benedictine in June. Kucera came with his customary thank-yous, as well as some urgency.

If need be, the middle distance maven offered his services in the shot put, the 3,200 – whatever might land the Knights a team trophy in 2014. The 4x800 title and a runner-up turn in the 4x400 still pointed Kaneland to sixth.

“That goes a long way to what kind of member he’s gong to be at Stanford for that team,” said Baron, who also coached Kucera as Chad Clarey’s cross country assistant. “Just talking with him, it’s totally evident that team comes before himself.

Those are things we as coaches always try to get in our athletes, and it’s always fulfilling to see it happen.”

Kucera ranks 18th in his class of 340 with a 4.04 gradepoint average on a 4.0 scale.

The prospective business student flexed his verbal skills en route to earning admittance to Stanford, writing three entrance essays.

Themes included a letter to his future roommate and a life event that motivated or helped him intellectually.

Give him a pen or a laptop right now and Kucera could produce volumes about the ongoing support from the Kaneland community through the years.

As Baron noted, “this is a pretty big day for us as a school, too.”

“I’m just really excited and blessed to be able to have this opportunity,” Kucera said. “I started track

out program pages and reverberate off pool walls.

Several staples of the eighth annual event had siblings who competed before them.

“It’s really a very unique sport and a very unique club in that parents don’t just put one kid in, they put everyone in,” SCST publicity representative Beth Wilson said, “and that’s where we get all these dynasties, I think.”

The three-day championships feature top regional talent from ages 10 through high school and begin at 5 p.m. today at St. Charles East’s Norris Center.

Swimming on Saturday and Sunday is set throughout the day at the Norris Center and St. Charles North’s pool, with finals slated for Norris at 5 p.m. on both days.

A handful of SCST swimmers – including Linda Licari, Audrey Guyett and Nick Vance – are in the USA Swimming top 10 for their age groups.

Finals begin with relays, “so the place is just crazy,” Wilson said.

“I was given this opportunity and I jumped on this.”

Stanford distance coach John Oliver called Kucera regarding his acceptance earlier this week.

Kucera still had been casually considering other schools that showed recruiting interest – namely Penn State, Kentucky and Wisconsin – as he awaited word.

With the Cardinal competing at an indoor meet in Seattle this weekend, Kucera must wait a few days before conferring with coaches about the final specifics of his scholarship.

What is clear: His commitment adds to an impressive list of Knights collegians under Baron, including classmate Kyle Carter (Southern Illinois) and recent graduates Taylor Andrews (Army), Miki Marin (Eastern Illinois), Logan Markuson (Minnesota) and Tommy Whittaker (Saint Louis).

“I was given this opportunity,” Kucera said, “and I jumped on this.”

WEST CHICAGO – Wheaton Academy football and soccer teams will compete starting in the fall at a new, on-campus turf field, the school announced Thursday.

The field will be named “Performance Trust Field” and was enabled by a lead gift from Rich and Carrie Berg, according to the news release. The Bergs’ son, Clayton, graduated from Wheaton Academy in 2010. Rich Berg is CEO and co-founder of Performance Trust.

“We are very appreciative,” Head of School Gene Frost said in the release. “We want to honor the Bergs’ generosity and willingness to use the money God has given them to continue His work at Wheaton Academy.”

The new turf surface will allow both boys soccer and football to use the field for home games during the fall. Boys lacrosse and girls soccer will share the field in the spring.

Wheaton Academy’s football program was reinstated in 2007 after being inactive since 1989.

North Stars ensure winning season

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North girls basketball team’s season has seen a promising 1-2 scoring punch emerge, and Morgan Rosencrants and Nichole Davidson reinforced that development on the final night of the regular season.

Rosencrants scored 21 points and Davidson added 18 points to lift the North Stars to a 56-51 win Thursday against South Elgin in the Upstate Eight Conference third-place crossover game.

“We’re pretty unstoppable when we’re playing together and we’re both on,” Rosen-

crants said.

The win ensured North (14-12) will finish coach Sean Masoncup’s first season with a winning record. North will open postseason play Wednesday in a 4A regional semifinal against Bartlett at Glenbard East.

“That’s huge,” Masconcup said of guaranteeing a winning record. “Our team goal was to finish above .500 in both conference and in regular season. The girls have really bought in, and it’s been a lot of fun. One through 15, they’re just a great group of young ladies, and I’m happy for them.”

North led by as many as 13 points after Rosencrants

scored the first four points of the fourth quarter for a 42-29 lead at the 6:40 mark.

South Elgin (18-9), though, came as close as 50-47 with 1:22 to play in the fourth quarter as Storm forward Mackie Kelleher converted a three-point play off an offensive rebound.

The Storm then briefly had the ball down three after North turned it over, but Rosencrants stole it right back and was fouled, making both free throws for a 52-47 advantage with 1:07 to go.

South Elgin came no closer than five points the rest of the way.

The Storm committed a season-high 26 turnovers,

much to coach Tim Predergast’s chagrin.

“Usually, you see this in the beginning of the year,” Prendergast said of his team’s turnover woes.

“We’re a veteran team. We don’t travel that much. It was double dribbles, it was travels. I think what happens is sometimes girls get in a funk and they can’t get out of it.”

Davidson and Rosencrants accounted for 16 of North’s 21 points in the first half, after which the North Stars led, 2120. The duo also combined for 20 rebounds on the night.

“Morgan and Nicole get their points, but [point guard Kyla Helsel] gets us into that spot,” Masoncup said. “ …

But when those two are on, we’re a pretty good offensive team.”

Helsel scored 10 points and made two of the North Stars’ three 3-pointers.

The victory allowed North to head into the postseason on much more confident footing after absorbing a lopsided loss in its prior outing against Geneva.

Senior forward Kennede Miller led South Elgin with 14 points. Anna Tracy added 12 points and Kelleher added 10 for the Storm, whose bench was scoreless on the night.

South Elgin will be the top seed next week at the Class 4A Jacobs Regional.

Jimenez calls his most memorable match his title bout as a sophomore, when Rock Island’s B.J. McGhee held Jimenez’s leg late in the third period. With McGhee set to hit a high-leg trip for a clinching takedown, Jimenez escaped and scored his own deciding takedown just ahead of the final buzzer.

“Big matches like that, that you have in the back of your mind, kind of helps a lot to make you work harder just so you can feel that feeling again,” Jimenez said.

Jimenez enters sectionals at 35-3, losing twice to outof-state opponents. Among his 10 high school defeats,

just two have come against Illinois foes. Dakota senior Josh Alber – who hasn’t lost a prep match yet and is the favorite in the 1A bracket at 132 – turned the trick both times, including a 3-1 victory this season.

Alber, who Jimenez counts as a friend, also has defeated Glenbard North senior Jered Cortez, the third athlete vying for a fourth state title.

Cortez, also a 132-pounder, won the first of his crowns as a 112-pound Marmion freshman before transferring.

Jimenez preceded Cortez in the Cadets’ lineup in those days. Three years later, he’s giving Marmion practices the same tenacious treatment.

“It’s the fun part of the year,” Jimenez said. “Coming to a close, getting to the end and state’s always the best tournament and a fun tournament. Just excited that it’s finally here.”

GENEVA – Geneva freshman Grace Loberg made her first Upstate Eight Conference crossover girls basketball game count Thursday, contributing 22 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks to the Vikings’ 56-45 victory against Bartlett.

Loberg credited the unselfishness of her teammates.

“They’re amazing. They make all my points possible,” she said. “They all make perfect passes to me and it makes my job 20 times easier.”

Morgan Seberger (13 points) also finished in double figures for the 20-5 Vikings, who tied Batavia for a share of the conference crown.

St. Charles East 56, Waubonsie Valley 34: At St. Charles, East moved to .500 with a UEC crossover win.

The Saints (13-13) won behind 18 points from Katie Claussner and 15 from Hannah Nowling.

DeKalb 52, Kaneland 39: At Maple Park, Kaneland couldn’t stop DeKalb from claiming a share of the Northern Illinois Big 12 East crown despite a strong third quarter that saw the Knights cut the Barbs’ lead to only seven points.

The Knights struggled against DeKalb’s 2-3 zone in the first half, converting only two field goals, and trailed by 11 at the break. But Kaneland started getting the ball inside to Kelly Wallner, who scored 12 points on the night, and the offense recorded 18 points in the third quarter.

“When we’re patient, we get the ball inside

and we don’t settle for jump shots,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “We get in trouble, we have all year, when we settle for jump shots.

Maybe it’s all a function of money, and the Yankees just have so much they can overpay fading, beloved stars. If so, is that not one virtuous function of wealth?

At any rate, it’s hard to think of an enemy Jeter has made in his career. Certainly there are jealousies among foes and even teammates, but if you have spent a good part of your pro life with a hollow-souled narcissist like third baseman Alex Rodriguez playing next to you (when not kissing himself in the mirror), you know about pettiness and fraudulence.

Nor is Jeter free from the mandatory self-love that all great athletes must have as they put off adult development to focus on things as juvenile as glove placement on grounders.

He said in his Facebook statement that besides doing some “business and philanthropic work,” he wants to focus on ``starting a family of my own.’’

As far as we know he didn’t start families with any of the many starlets and models he squired about New York during his two decades in the Big Apple. If that beauty line seems vapid, it’s hard to argue that most handsome, rich single men in Manhattan would have been hard pressed not to have done the same.

Yes, there were times when Jeter seemed secretive and a tad superficial. But he was only a ballplayer, and he sensed instinctively that he had to act a certain way and hide certain things if he wanted to survive without destructive controversy in a place where a newspaper front page might blare, as the Oct. 21, 2011, New York Post did: “KHADDAFY KILLED

BY YANKEE FAN.”

SOCHI, Russia – J.P. Parise, furious over a penalty call, slammed his stick on the ice, wheeled around and took a few purposeful strides at referee Josef Kampalla, raising his stick above his head and barely checking his swing. Parise was inches away from smashing the stick over the petrified official’s head – close enough that Kampalla cowered against the boards and braced for impact.

It was 1972. It was the final game of the famed Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union – the first time NHL professionals squared off with what they foolishly presumed was a team of amateurs.

It was everything.

“If it happened nowadays, I think he’d be banned from every hockey rink in the world,” Zach Parise said of his dad, laughing. “That just shows how emotional the series was.”

The elder Parise was assessed a match penalty, and didn’t get to celebrate the dramatic and historic victory with his teammates in full gear. No regrets, however.

“Apparently, after he did it, the refs shaped up a little bit and started calling the game fair,” Zach Parise said. “So I think he did the right thing.”

There’s just something about playing Russia, even in the post-Soviet era. The history, the iconic names, the legendary games – for so many years, they all seemed to revolve around the Russians. Now, at the Sochi Games, the Russians are once again the centers of attention, under indescribable pressure to pull out an unlikely gold medal on their home soil.

Alex Ovechkin’s face is on seemingly every billboard and Coke machine. A picture of Evgeni Malkin is plastered eight stories high on the side of a building near the Olympic park. Fans are wandering the streets with giant cut-out heads of Ilya Kovalchuk. And captain Pavel Datsyuk is risking the ire of his fans and team back in Detroit to play despite an apparent knee injury.

“I participated in four Olym-

pics, and I don’t remember such an interest in ice hockey players,” said Soviet goaltending legend and former Blackhawks consultant Vladislav Tretiak.

That interest will reach a fever pitch on Saturday (6:30 a.m. central time) at the Bolshoy Ice Dome, when the Americans and Russians renew their rivalry in arguably their highest-profile meeting since the 1980 Miracle on Ice. Sure, it’s only a preliminary game. But a bye to the quarterfinals could be at stake, and the location of the game –and the incredible ruckus the Russian fans have been making – has elevated it to Big Game status.

“I think it’ll be loud,” Patrick Kane said after the Americans throttled Slovakia 7-1 in Thursday’s opener, a game in which Kane had two assists and Paul Stastny had two goals.

“And it’ll definitely be a hostile environment. I think it’ll be a lot more enthusiastic and intense than this game today.”

All the players involved know the history of Russian hockey. A few even have some blood in it. Parise’s dad was on the Canadian Summit Series team. Ryan Suter’s dad, Bob, was a defenseman on the 1980 U.S. team that shocked the Soviets and the world in Lake Placid. And Russian forward Viktor Tikhonov is the grandson of the Soviet coach of the same name, the man who was behind the bench in 1980.

“Forty years later, it’s almost the same thing, where we’re going to be playing the Russians,” Parise said. “I don’t think there are a lot of father-son combinations that can say they share that experience that we have.”

If Russia’s tougher-than-itshould-have-been 5-2 victory over Slovenia on Thursday was any indication – the noise absolutely deafening at Bolshoy – it’ll be a singular experience.

Unless, of course, the two historic rivals meet again in an even bigger game, with even higher stakes, next week.

“I’ve played against Russia before in some different tournaments,” Kane said. “But it’s a different animal in the Olympics, and in their hometown.”

I hate the Yankees, just like almost everybody else.

Well, not really hate–more like endless, unchangeable dislike.

There are three reasons I (we) feel this way: 1. The Yankees outspend everybody.

2. The Yankees are too successful (27 World Series titles).

3. The Yankees play in New York, which considers itself the center of the universe and us mere space dust orbiting its splendor.

But Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter announced Wednesday that he is retiring at the end of this season, and it struck me (us?) with some force that we’ll be losing a wonderful gentleman of a player who has brought dignity to the Great American Pastime.

Jeter is 39, and time and injuries–most recently his surgically-repaired ankle–are taking their toll. Twenty years of standout play and sportsmanship are enough.

That’s a beautiful number, especially when it was all done with one team. I think wistfully of Greg Maddux, recent Hall of Fame inductee, and what a symbol he could have been

No favorite sweethearts; everybody gets one, right?

Here’s a challenge for grownups. Other than close family, who would you select as that special person, famous or not, that you appreciate for various reasons such as achievements, character traits, helping others, making you laugh or cry, etc.?

Kathy Brens, a retired teacher who takes leadership with the St. Charles Historical Society (she has raffle tickets!), stretched the boundaries of the question by selecting both her spouse and a well-known and highly productive volunteer, her late husband, Jack.

She cites his role in the family as father and grandfather, recalls that he never passed on a chance to help them or his neighbors and the town

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry he loved; and how he used his self-directed humor to diffuse tension and make things, bearable.

His community involvement included his UCC leadership, particularly as they built the church; service organizations; and the St. Charles Historical Society.

“I miss him every day.”

I recall my days on the University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty when I had a prime seat behind the bench of the basketball team at the old field house.

It was great to inform those all around me that both Jack and Ken Gustafson were from St. Charles (put Fran Gustafson on my special valentine list).

Jan Schindlbeck of Batavia, a friend from days at Aurora University, did not hesitate to

name Pope Francis.

Along the same line, Albert Van Thournout, a class-of-’56 pal – now a history professor in Maryland – began his selection with St. Francis of Assisi and goes to the Grand Duchess Anastasia, who was brought to his attention by popular school librarian May Jordan.

Upon further reflection, he cites members of his family who were supportive as he grew up. Albert looks back from his, now, aging adult perspective and admires how they emerged from their difficulties to bring courage, strength, persistence and a view of life that is hopeful and positive.

When unhappy or dissatisfied, she made her approach with a grim and menacing look on her face and a gnarly finger punch on the chest.

She taught us to care. In retrospect, her standards were complete competence with an openness to learning; eyes that see; and a heart that knows.

Her approach was heralded by the brisk patter of her Cuban-heeled shoes. I still listen for that ominous sound.

Clearly, I still appreciate and apply her standards when encountering other health professionals.

Although admittedly quick to scorn, my lessons from Millie include experiencing the satisfaction of a job well done.

Do I expect a valentine from Mister Z? He never fails. It’s just that he waits until the next day when cards, flowers and candy go on sale.

Patrons can meet their match during library’s ‘Blind Date a Book’ program KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva Public Library District is currently hosting its “Blind Date a Book” program in an effort to introduce readers to new titles and authors. Selected titles are for teens and adults.

“Dateable” books will be available through Friday, Feb. 28. The blind-date books are located in the library’s fiction room, and the book’s cover will be wrapped in brown paper to conceal the identity of the book. A blind-date book could be about a bold assassin seeking a brave reader; a believer in destiny seeking an explorer with a bad case of wanderlust; a swashbuckling romantic seeking someone who is easily seduced; and more.

Patrons will not know which book they are selecting.

Once the blind-date book is read, patrons can fill out an included “Rate Your Date” card, and drop it off at the readers’ advisory desk by Wednesday, March 12. Participants also will be given a chance to win a Graham’s 318 gift card.

Fine Line Creative Arts Center receives civic image award KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – With the completion of a new entrance at 37W570 Bolcum Road last June, Fine Line Creative Center became easier to find and more a part of the St. Charles landscape.

The new entrance included an expanded parking lot, new lighting and a new forged steel sign created by Fine Line instructor and artist Dan Caldwell.

In recognition of the new entryway, Fine Line recently received the Civic Image Award from the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce.

Lynn Caldwell, director of Fine Line, accepted the award, which was presented by Tom Hansen, chairman of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce.

“This project has been in the works since 2009,” said Caldwell in a news release.

“For the first time in our history, Fine Line has an address, a sign and a driveway which all coincide.”

Fine Line has been at its current location since 1986, but had to restrict some of its offerings over the years due to

Honda provides adventure with Civic There is little to dislike in the 2014 Honda Civic sedan.

Seats are wide and the front buckets extend back for comfort of taller drivers and their seat mates.

Economy and safety features are above the norm.

The exterior is svelte expressing a low, wide, strong look.

Instrumentation is sound and interior layout is typical of Honda, which is to say sensible. Interior pulls to close the door are near the elbow, for example, where the weight is located. There are competitors who put a notched pull at the front, which is almost useless when trying to close a door.

Time, temperature and vehicle speed are headlined on information and instrumentation panels.

During a recent test week, the computerized electronics did inaugurate an adventure.

In the tested EX-L model of a 2014 Civic an icon noted that one or more tires could use some air. Since this vehicle was a Civic, albeit an EX-L close to top-of-the-line model, the icon did not point out the offending tire or tires. At a service station all four tires were checked and one was at a lower PSI than the other three by five pounds. Air was put in the offending tire and the result was an equalizing of pounds per square inch in all four tires.

But, the icon showing a tire was low would not go away. It remained on the information panel behind the steering wheel. So, the owner’s manual was consulted and page 333 referred to how to connect to the car’s computer and reset the correct information regarding a tire’s PSI. If done properly, the icon would disappear and, in its place, the information panel would again relate time, temperature and vital speed and economy statistics.

The owner’s manual helped. The instructions were followed and the low tire icon disappeared from the information panel.

All was well, or so it seemed. But then the icon and tire low information reappeared. And would not go away no matter how much effort was expended.

The tires, by the way, were rechecked and they shared the same PSi and that was the PSI recommended by the

Page 333 was consulted again and read again, three or four times. Instructions were followed one more or, perhaps, a dozen times. Although the low tire icon did not go away immediately, after repeated efforts it disappeared. Some computer.

A more technologically savvy driver probably would have had better success playing with that tire icon.

On the more pleasant side, since model year 2013 the Civic has improved in looks and feel. The hood now has a bulge (slight); the grille is mesh; a lower valance is framed in chrome; fog lights sit at the corners; and smoked lenses add something to the widened taillights. The 17-inch wheels on the EX-L are distinguished by 10 angled spokes.

Softer materials have replaced hard plastic trim in the cabin.

Reliability, economy and price are three factors that have made the Civic

the best-seller in the compact sedan market. Prices start at $18,390 and climb to $24,635 for the hybrid version.

Civics also come as coupes.

The standard Civic engine is a 1.8-liter, 143-horsepower, single overhead cam, inline four-cylinder, which can average 26 to 44 miles per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, according to the federal government.

The tested 2,930-pound EX-L averaged 31.1 miles per gallon of gasoline.

Most of the driving was on interstates with two persons aboard in inclement weather. Honda publicists claim the hybrid is capable of 44 mpg city and highway.

It took 9.5 seconds unofficially to race the tested EX-L from 0 to 60 miles per hour. Braking back to 0 from 60 mph covered a distance of 120 feet, which betters the norm for a car of this size and price. Disc brakes measure 11.1 inches in front and 10.2 inches in the rear.

A strut suspension system in front with multilinks in the rear works fine.

During the test week the ride proved comfortable and relatively quiet.

Inside, the sweeping dashboard gives the illusion of a roomy and large

sedan. Front seating area measures 42.2 inches and this is OK for adults in the 6-foot and less category. In the rear, the 36.2 inches of leg room is average for a compact sedan.

Red, green, blue and white colors dominate dashboard information panels and gauges. A green button can be pushed on or off for fuel economy purposes. Vehicle information is concentrated on hooded tiers behind the manually tilt steering wheel.

Trunk space measures 12.5 cubic feet.

There are airbags in front and on the sides (in front) as well as overhead for both seating rows. Mechanicals include traction and stability controls, a four-wheel antilock braking system, brake assist, electronic brake distribution, seatbelts and headrests for five seating positions, intermittent wipers, rear window defroster, daytime running lights and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Power includes windows (express up and down for driver), door locks, heated exterior mirrors, and remote entry with trunk opener.

The six-speaker, 160-watt, high definition sound system serves AM-FM-satellite radio, compact disc and MP3 players and auxiliary audio input. It also accommodates an iPad and USB port.

Controls are easy to operate and understand although the touch screen occasionally was annoying. It took repeated pushes to get to the desired radio station on more than one occasion. Perhaps the ergonomic folks at Honda should return to knobs to dial in a station. With the EX-L, there is an SMS text messaging system, Bluetooth and Pandora compatibility with select smartphones.

Niceties include cruise control, storage bins placed in strategic locations, armrests, cupholders, grab handles, reading and map lights, two 12-volt outlets and air conditioning with filtration.

The Civic has been on the market in the United States since 1972 and has acquired a reputation for reliability in the ensuing 40 years.

Assembled in North America, warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

‘About Last Night’ remake worth watching for Hart, Hall

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post In the 1980s, when “About Last Night ... ” came out, it quickly became a cinematic signifier for its era, the ultimate chronicle of youthful romantic anxiety and gamesmanship, starring the avatars of their generation, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe.

Nearly 30 years on, the year-in-thelife rom-com has been spruced up and given some timely punch, even though its cliches – of commitment-phobic men and needy women – are hoarier than ever. The action has been transported from Chicago to Los Angeles, where Daniel (Michael Ealy) and Debbie (Joy Bryant) meet after their respective best friends drag them along on a drunken double date. They’re both so sensational looking that their wariness at first seems impossibly put on – don’t people this attractive have some kind of innate mutual heat-seeking system? But soon they’ve embarked on an affair that may or may

not lead to something more serious, as they work out just how love, sex and relationships fit together beyond the throes of bedroom passion.

Ealy and Bryant slip into their roles with ease, and “About Last Night” possesses the surface sheen and escapist prettiness that may be the first prerequisite of any successful romantic comedy.

If Daniel’s issues with his job seem to pounce out of nowhere and Debbie’s increasingly furrowed forehead bespeaks tiresome shrewish stereotypes, the actors themselves have enough native charisma to make their characters’ most annoying traits tolerable.

What isn’t tolerable is director Steve Pink’s tendency to cut-cut-cut back and forth within scenes, presumably to infuse visual interest into what is essentially a series of pictures of people talking. As a remake of “About Last Night,” this version is the remake of an adaptation of David Mamet’s oneact play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” but the dialogue doesn’t bear the

playwright’s signature bite or flair. It’s vulgar and sexually graphic, but not particularly observant.

The ebbs and flows of Daniel and Debbie’s romance never veer from the tenets of Screenwriting 101. (Among the film’s archaic pivot points is who says “I love you” first, and someone actually uses the term “the L word” to discuss it. Really?)

In fact, the biggest surprise of “About Last Night” is the chemistry between Kevin Hart and Regina Hall, who, as the central couple’s best friends, steal the movie whenever they’re on screen. Caustic, profane and propelled by hysterically pitched improvisatory brio, the two grow funnier as the movie wears on – to the point that, after years of not understanding Hart’s appeal, this viewer is finally, maybe, starting to get it.

“About Last Night” may be about Daniel and Debbie, but it’s Hart and Hall who make it worth watching. They take palatable but not exceptional cinematic hay and turn it into comic gold.

Wife’s devotion to husband stops at the church Shy girl hopes it’s a phase Dear Abby: About a year ago, my husband, “Scott,” started attending church. He had never gone in the few years we dated.

We discussed our feelings about religion before we became engaged. He comes from a family that attended church every Sunday and believes in God. I was raised the exact opposite; I’m an atheist.

I told Scott that if we had children, I would be OK with him taking them to church, but I would not join them.

After a difficult year that led to some mild depression (for which Scott sought help), he started going to church. I was happy for him because it seemed to help him.

After a few weeks he asked me to go with him. I went several times, but felt uncomfortable. I feel like a fraud sitting in the pew.

Scott says he “wants my support” and that means attending with him.

I do not enjoy it. I have been offended by some of the messages that were imparted, and I would prefer having a couple of hours to myself on Sundays.

Remind him that church attendance was not part of your agreement when you married him and that you value your solitary time at home the same way he appreciates the service.

While you might relent and go with him on major holidays – some non-believing spouses do that – there really isn’t a middle ground, and because you feel so strongly about it, you should stand yours.

Dear Abby: I am the mother of two girls. One of them has a lot of emotional problems. My husband is gone for months at a time due to his job. I have told him many times that I want him to find another job

that would have him home more often. He always says that there are no jobs that will pay what he’s making now.

I know that we need a good-paying job, but I need my husband home and my girls need their father. With all of our daughter’s issues, everything falls on my shoulders and I don’t feel I can handle it alone much longer. We don’t live near family, and I have found it hard to make friends due to my daughter’s acting out. If your husband doesn’t already understand what you are going through, I doubt there is much you can say that will convince him to quit his lucrative job.

Symptoms sometimes persist after treatment Dear Doctor K: My neighbor was diagnosed with Lyme disease.

Why does he still have symptoms, even though he has completed his treatment?

Dear Reader: The great majority of people diagnosed with Lyme disease, and properly treated, are cured. However, there are some people like your neighbor who are never fully cured, and we do not understand why proper diagnosis and treatment do not always lead to the elimination of suffering.

Here’s what we do know. Lyme disease is an infection caused by bacteria that are transmitted through tick bites. The first symptom is usually a flat, reddish rash that spreads from the site of the tick bite. It often develops a central clear area known as a bull’s-eye. (I’ve put an illustration of this characteristic rash on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Over several days to weeks after the tick bite, the bacteria spread from the skin where the tick bite occurred. They can spread to the brain and heart, causing neurological problems and an inflammation of the heart muscle. Treatment involves a several-week course of antibiotics either taken by mouth or given intravenously (into a vein).

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff There are some important things to note about Lyme disease and treatment: • It is possible to have Lyme disease more than once.

• Some people with Lyme disease need more than one course of treatment before they are cured.

• Occasionally, people with Lyme disease can be cured of the infection, but then develop “reactive arthritis.” This is a condition in which the bacteria that caused the Lyme disease trigger an immune attack on the joints.

• The ticks that carry the Lyme disease bacteria also can carry other types of bacteria that produce some symptoms similar to Lyme disease. Those other bacteria may not be killed as effectively by the antibiotics used to treat Lyme disease.

• Some people experience symptoms, such as fatigue or difficulty concentrating, after the infection is treated. This may happen even when there is no evidence that the bacteria are still in the body.

People who, like your neighbor, continue to have symptoms after what is thought to be proper treatment are sometimes given the diagnosis of “chronic Lyme disease.” This diagnosis is controversial, as the term implies that the persistent symptoms are caused by an ongoing infection with Lyme disease bacteria.

Most Lyme disease experts believe this happens only rarely (or never). But some doctors diagnose chronic Lyme disease frequently and prescribe longterm intravenous antibiotics. In my opinion, the evidence that such long-term treatment helps is not very strong.

But I also believe we don’t understand enough about this condition for anyone to hold strong opinions. I also don’t believe that such patients are just “imagining” that they are sick. Something – Lyme bacteria, other bacteria or viruses, or an unusual response of their immune system to infection – is making them sick. We just haven’t figured out what it is.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a very shy person, and because of this, I miss out on a lot of excitement and fun.

What really bothers me is that almost everyone I know is outgoing and doesn’t appear to be in the least bit shy.

My older sister (she’s outgoing) said that she was also shy when she was young and that everyone is shy at one time or another. Is this true?

I sure hope so. – Maria, Odessa, Tex. Dear Maria: According to a survey by Dr. Philip Zimbardo and a research team at Stanford University that has done extensive studies, shyness is almost a normal human emotion that is universal in scope.

Only 7 percent of the people they questioned claimed that they had never been shy. That leaves a whopping 93 percent who can’t make that claim. Shyness is equally common among males and females with teens experiencing the greatest shyness. But Dr. Zimbardo discovered that during the teen years, girls were shyer than boys mainly because of the physical changes that occur.

Dr. Mary Lou Vandenburg, author of “Coping with Being Shy,” states that the first step in overcoming shyness or making any personal changes in your life should start with self-acceptance. Optimistic thoughts can change your life.

Dr. Wallace: No lectures please. Just a simple answer will be sufficient. I’m 16 and so is my boyfriend. This past summer, we entered into a sexual relationship. We are cautious.

Still, I’m aware that using a condom is not 100 percent effective. I really want to know the percent that condoms are effective.

For those who choose to be sexually active, it is imperative that a latex condom is used.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, laboratory studies show that latex condoms provide a continuous barrier to microorganisms including HIV as well as sperm.

Natural membrane condoms cannot make this same claim. Latex condoms are highly effective (98 percent) when used consistently and correctly during sexual encounters.

Dr. Wallace: Is it true that more girls now smoke than boys? I find this hard to believe. I got this info from my health teacher. – Lisa, Chicago Dear Lisa: Teenage girls are, indeed, caught up in a smoking spiral and smoking in this group is rising sharply.

Not so long ago, more teenage boys smoked than girls. Not so today.

The American Cancer Society reports that about 25 percent of girls between the ages of 12 and 19 now smoke cigarettes. And this is more than the number of boys the same age who smoke.

Tobacco companies spend millions of dollars directing advertising to convince females that smoking is fashionable.

In this deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads his fourth-highest spade. How should the play proceed?

Declarer took East’s spade queen with his ace, cashed the diamond king and continued with the diamond queen. He was hoping the jack would appear, allowing him to run for home.

However, when West discarded the heart four at trick three, South had to regroup.

Declarer needed a dummy entry, so had to find West with the heart king. At trick four, South led a low heart.

West won with his king and cashed the spade king: club, spade three, nine. West continued with the spade jack: club, spade five, 10. Suitably deceived, West led another spade. South won with his eight, played a heart to dummy’s queen and ran the diamonds to collect an overtrick.

“How could I have known?” asked West.

East pointed out that on the second round of spades, he gave “remaining count.” Here, because he had three cards left, he dropped the lowest one. If instead he had still held 8-6-5-3, he would have played the six under West’s king and the three under the jack.

West, after cashing the spade jack, should, in desperation, have shifted to his club two, which would have resulted in down two.
