A new intern has landed in the Kane County Chronicle newsroom.

Jon Beltrano, a 2014 graduate of Batavia High School and current student at Waubonsee and Elgin community colleges, started as an intern Feb. 1.

While at BHS, Jon contributed to The Spectator student newspaper.

He plans to attend the University of Missouri in the fall.

“I wanted to intern [at the Kane County Chronicle] before I start actually getting into the field, so I can build up skills ... ,” Jon said. “I know that this will be kind of ... hard work because I am also doing this and the newspaper at ECC. I know, though, by the end of the semester, that I’ll be probably on top of my game. And that I’ll be going forth into a pretty good program at Mizzou, with some mindset of where I’m at exactly in this field and where I can be.”

Jon, 19, said interning at the Chronicle already has inspired him, noting conversations he has overheard between editors and reporters in the newsroom regarding news stories and other work-related matters.

“That’s what I want to do, and so it’s really nice to watch somebody do it,” he said. “I don’t think I should

a student-faculty liaison, among other duties.

Elburn police chase hits 100 mph Alleged shoplifters eventually evaded pursuit

asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A couple sought in connection to a Sugar Grove shoplifting case eluded Elburn police last week as they sped toward St. Charles in a stolen car, according to an Elburn Police Department report.

At 7:18 p.m. Feb. 4, an Elburn detective reportedly spotted the red 2015 Hyundai Sonata that had been described over police radio traffic minutes earlier in connection with a retail theft at the Jewel in Sugar Grove.

The vehicle, which the Park Ridge Police Department reported as stolen, turned into the Jewel parking lot at

800 N. Main St. in Elburn and stopped in a parking space, police reported.

The detective, whose squad car’s emergency lights were activated, exited the vehicle and approached the Hyundai, which then left, police reported.

Although neither of the individual’s faces could be seen, the police provided a limited description of the male driver and female passenger, according to the report. Both were described as being in their late teens or early 20s, white or Hispanic with light brown skin and black hair, the report states.

As the pair traveled east on Route 38 toward St. Charles, the detective

followed with the squad car’s lights and sirens activated, police reported.

According to the report, the Hyundai passed other vehicles – both from the left and from the right, on the shoulder – and vehicles in both directions were “forced to take evasive action to avoid the Hyundai,” police reported.

Its speed reached 100 mph near Bowgren Drive but slowed to about 85 mph after running a red light at Route 38 and LaFox Road, police reported.

The detective eventually lost sight of the vehicle and turned around at Peck Road in St. Charles Township, police reported.

The report referenced involvement by police in other jurisdictions, but it did not mention whether an arrest eventually was made.

Robins can do well in the Tri-Cities in winter

When we receive an email with a question about any sort of nature-related phenomenon, I usually think something along the lines of, “Yippee! Someone’s paying attention to something besides their tablet, smart phone or television.” I write a response and life goes on.

When we receive multiple emails, as well as phone calls, asking that same question, I start compiling thoughts in preparation for a future Good Natured column.

But when that same query appears in the Chronicle’s Sound Off column, AND in a letter to the editor, all while emails and phone calls continue to come in. ... Well, believe you me, I do not pass Go, I do not collect $200, I head directly for the laptop and start typing furiously on the topic of ...

American robins!

There’s no doubt these feathered friends, known also as Turdus migratorius (one of the all-time great Latin names), are enjoying a fair share of success right now. And, as is so often the case in suburbia, we humans are more than a little responsible.

For one thing, through the steps we take to make ourselves comfortable, we also make things easier for them.

We’ve built structures that offer sheltered and predator-proof nesting locations.

How many of you have had robins build nests on your porch pillars or outside light fixtures?

It’s no different at Hickory Knolls.

Each year an early-bird robin gets – not only the worms – but also the prime location atop the light by our front door.

Tucked up in a corner, the space is out of the wind and also protected from precipitation.

Robins also nest on the steel supports beneath our solar panels and have attempted, though not succeeded in, building on the aluminum frames of our expansive windows.

Even though we have plenty of trees, these man-made locations seem preferred.

Keep in mind that these ideal nesting spots are generally used not once but twice.

Despite what today’s weather may feel like, we live in a temperate climate that affords robins a chance to raise at least two broods each year.

Even if one nest attempt is a complete failure, there’s generally time to regroup and try, try again.

A look at Kane County’s Audu-

GOOD NATURED

Pam Erickson Otto bon’s Spring Bird Count data confirms that robins are doing very well in our area. So well, in fact, that they rank third in terms of total individuals seen over the survey’s 44-year history. (Coming in at No. 2 is the common grackle, and No. 1 is the red-winged blackbird, a species we’ll be taking a closer look at next week.)

By now you’re probably thinking, “OK Otto, we get it. Robins are doing well. But why are we seeing so many in winter? Don’t they migrate? Isn’t their return a sign of spring?”

Well, alrighty then, let’s dig a little bit further into what makes robins tick. Besides shelter, they also need food. And there again, humans have gone above and beyond.

Our preference for landscaping with trees and shrubs that produce flowers, and therefore fruits, has created a year-round source of food for T. migratorius.

True, the image of a robin pulling a worm from the ground is about as iconic as a nature photo can get. But in reality, robins consume a diverse diet that varies with season and availability.

I’d wager that all of you who have been seeing robins this winter have seen them in or near fruit-bearing plantings. Crabapple trees. Hawthornes. Bittersweet. Sumac. Honeysuckle. Roses, with their vitamin C-laden hips. All are readily available in our area and consumed with gusto.

To wash down these delicacies, as well as keep their feathers in peak condition, robins need a source of water.

Once again, we humans have come through on both large and small scales. We’ve built dams that keep water open and flowing on their downstream sides, and we’ve placed heaters in our birdbaths.

Another vital requirement met.

A few other things to keep in mind as you observe robins amid the snow and cold: • Migration is taxing on birds of all species. Wear and tear on muscles and feathers can be substantial.

Robins, being hardy and opportunistic, can avoid the stress of migration by flying only as far as necessary to find food, water and shelter.

Even though they’re considered a sign of spring, robins can be seen year-round in many parts of Kane County. Plentiful food, in the form of fruit on ornamental as well as native plants, is one reason for their success.

• Robins form flocks when not in breeding mode. Birds in a group have a better chance of finding food and detecting predators than do individuals going it alone.

• As casual observers, we have no way of knowing for sure whether our winter robins are year-round residents, or visitors from farther north.

Chances are, we’re seeing a little bit of both.

• Even though we still experience some periods of extreme cold, our recent winters have generally been mild. Warmer temperatures improve winter survival rates.

I know, it’s hard to give up the idea that robins signal that spring has arrived.

If you’re a diehard robin fan, and I know there are a lot of you out there, all you need to do is modify

your technique just a bit. Instead of using only your eyes to spot robins, use your ears too, to listen to their sounds.

If all you hear is cheeps and chatters, you’re observing standard flock communication denoting that the birds are still in winter mode.

But if you see an individual by himself, and he’s belting out a hearty “Cheery-up, cheerio,” you’ll know you’ve found a bird that’s declaring his territory. He’s getting ready for the coming breeding season – a time of year you and I call spring.

‘Their favorite topic would be love’ Valentine’s Day allows Batavia preschoolers to express their feelings

bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Ezra Duchek carefully cut the outline of a heart out of red paper, then put his face in the heartshaped window and smiled.

At the same table, Gracie Dellis finished cutting out her heart and did the same – fitting her face in the open heart-shaped window and smiling back at Ezra.

The two were among 17 pre-kindergarten students at the Batavia Nursery School who worked on Valentine’s Day crafts this week in preparation for the holiday, which will be Sunday. The school is in the Batavia Congregational Church, 21 S. Batavia Ave., which also sponsors the program.

The program provided an opportunity for the children to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Betsy Lewis, who is co-director with Pat Vidlak, said of the students, “their favorite topic would be love.”

“It’s a topic dear to their hearts,” Lewis said. “They are very social beings. They love each other, their siblings, parents, grandparents. They feel so much love in their lives. …

This is a way to express that.”

Lewis said the preschoolers, who range from 3 to 5 years old in various classes, decorated boxes for giving and receiving their cards. They also did crafts connected to the holiday.

And they did it all with enthusiasm and lots of smiles.

Lewis demonstrated the craft in Vidlak’s class of prekindergarten students, showing how to cut heart shapes that they would use to create a collage with stickers and glitter.

The trick, Lewis said, was to dribble a thin ribbon of glue on a thinedged heart instead of a big drippy gob, instructions that Audrey Schwab, Jax Schalla and Grey Purdue followed perfectly.

In the 3-year-old class, Bobbi Norkus directed seven children on making a red heart-shaped mouse with pink and red hearts for ears, pink whiskers and tail, a black nose and black and white eyes.

Brody Oake used too much glue, so Parrington suggested he share it.

“Where’s my nose?” Primiana Filar asked, as she cast about for the mouse’s black button nose.

Jack Williams put the mouse’s eyes a little too high up, so Parrington redirected their location.

“You put his eyes down here,” Parrington said, relocating the eyes closer down the snout. “He does not have eyes up by his ears.”

Then Jack was ready to glue on the pink tail.

“What else does a mouse need?”

Parrington asked.

“Time to put on the eyes,” Luca Marotta said, as he reached for the final touch to his mouse.

The Batavia Nursery School has seen a lot of children, as it is in its 41st year, Lewis said.

Jeanie Fisk of Batavia said she started the preschool program at the church because she wanted her 3-year-old daughter to be in preschool.

“We were a group of women who all had preschoolers, and we were looking for a preschool,” Fisk said.

“And I was a teacher, and I said, ‘I can do this.’”

Fisk said she was happy to know how long the program has lasted.

“I was there 24 years, teaching it and running it,” Fisk said. “I’m happy that I could walk away, and it could continue.”

she saw it on CNN.” Her friend, Donna Pinkston of Geneva, said after she saw it on the news, she suspected it was not an attack because the report immediately went to something else.

“I Googled it and saw that it was part of a film,” Pinkston said.

David Marconi wrote “Enemy of the State” in 1998, wrote and directed “The Harvest” in 1992, and was one of the writers for “Live Free or Die Hard” in 2007, according to the IMDb website.

When a bus blew up in a flaming explosion on Lambeth Bridge in London last week, the image made its way around the world. Some people thought it might be another terrorist attack.

It was not an attack, but instead was a scene in an action movie starring Pierce Brosnan and Jackie Chan that was being filmed there, said Addie Marconi of Batavia.

Marconi said her stepson, David Marconi, wrote the screenplay, so she and her stepdaughter, Mary Marconi-Popiel, of St. Charles, went to London recently to see the filming.

“It was very cool to see my brother on the set,” Marconi-Popiel said. “It was very interesting to see how everything is done.

“There were tons of cameras – on top of buildings, at angles all around the bridge. They had a helicopter and had to buy the airspace above the bridge.”

Marconi-Popiel said the movie, titled “The Foreigner,” will finish filming this month and likely will be released by the end of the year.

“My dad would have been very, very proud,” Marconi-Popiel said.

The film is based on a 1992 book by British thriller author Stephen Leather, about a Vietnamese man – a former Viet Cong assassin – who loses his family in an IRA attack and then travels to Ireland to hunt down the men responsible.

BATAVIA – Tim McDermott, the principal of H.C. Storm Elementary School for nearly four years, was appointed to principal of Alice Gustafson Elementary School, Batavia Public School District 101 officials announced in a news release.

McDermott is replacing Jan Wright, who is retiring at the end of this Tim McDermott school year.

Anne Paonessa, current assistant principal at H.C. Storm and Grace McWayne Elementary schools and director of the district’s English Learners Program, was promoted to principal at Storm and will be replacing McDermott.

Both positions will be effective July 1, 2016, according to the release..

Superintendent Lisa Hichens stated that administrators interviewed staff, parents, board members and students in a comprehensive search process, according to the release.

“Based on stakeholder feedback, we determined that the vacancies could and

should be filled internally,” Hichens stated in the release. “We are confident in our selection.”

McDermott led the installation of the H.C. Storm outdoor classroom and community mosaic mural, facilitated the implementation of professional learning communities and established student goal-setting in math and reading, according to the release.

Before his position Anne as principal, McDermott Paonessa was a fourth-grade teacher, interventionist and student services coordinator at Indian Prairie School District 204 for 13 years, according to the release. McDermott stated that he was excited for the opportunity to partner with teachers, students, and families at Gustafson “and to build on their success with student learning,” according to the news release.

“We are very grateful for the two years that Pam Leffler gave us at the St. Charles Public Library,” Board of Trustees President Tory Haines said. “She has resigned to pursue other opportunities, and we wish her well.”

Leffler joined the library in 2014 after the retirement of Direc- Pam Leffler tor Diana Brown, who worked there for nearly 40 years.

Aurora priest Small dog escapes coyote attack in St. Charles facing sex abuse charges

ksmith@shawmedia.com An Aurora priest and former DeKalb minister remained at the Kane County jail as of Friday afternoon on criminal sexual abuse charges.

Alfredo Pedraza Arias, of the 200 block of High Street, Aurora, has not worked in a church since accusations arose in October 2014, according to a news release from the Diocese of Rockford.

Pedraza Arias joined the Rockford Diocese in 2013 and started work with the Hispanic Ministry in DeKalb, and the Sacred Heart Parish and Our Alfredo Pedraza Arias Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Aurora.

Police believe the abuse took place at both Sacred Heart Church in Aurora and one of the children’s homes, according to a news release from the Kane County Stat’s Attorney’s Office.

Pedraza Arias was arrested Thursday by the United States Marshal Service and Kane County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse – a felony punishable by three to seven years in prison.

Should Pedraza Arias be convicted, he would have to register as a sex offender.

Pedraza Arias’ bond has been set at $50,000, meaning he must post $5,000 bail to be released. He is due back in court Thursday.

The Kane County Child Advocacy Center continues to investigate the situation.

ST. CHARLES – A miniature American Eskimo dog narrowly escaped being a coyote’s dinner this week after her owner yelled at the animal and chased it away.

Brian Willard, of the 500 block of Bradley Circle in The Timbers subdivision in St. Charles, said his wife, Diane, let Sara out about 11:15 p.m.

Sunday, after the Super Bowl, for Sara’s last break of the night. Sara weighs about 22 pounds, he said.

“My wife needed to go upstairs, and she asked me to keep an eye on the dog,” Willard said. “Within 20 to 30 seconds, tops … I caught some odd movements, and then I saw the attack in progress. I bolted out the door and started yelling.”

The coyote had picked up Sara but dropped her in the street when Willard came running and yelling.

“Sara then headed toward me and the front door,” Willard said. “I heard something and turned around, and another coyote came out from behind my car in the driveway and growled and hissed at me and then trotted away.”

They took Sara to the vet the next day, he said, and she was treated for a

“The vet said the combination of the thickness of her fur and that she had a collar on probably saved her life,” Willard said.

The city of St. Charles website advises pet owners not to let small dogs out unattended. It also advises residents not to feed coyotes or feral cats and to make sure their garbage is secured so as not to attract coyotes.

Vikings dance way to 3-peat at state meet

You can dance if you want to, but it’s a mandate if you’re part of the Geneva competitive dance team.

It’s also a proficiency. Competing at Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum on Jan. 29 and 30, the Vikings earned the program’s third successive IHSA Class 2A state championship. The state competition is only in its fourth year.

Coach Amy VanWegenen’s Vikings scored 96.3 points to defeat runner-up Lake Zurich (93.04) and the rest of the 10-team field. Thirty schools from each of the IHSA’s three classes entered the tournament, but only the top 10 advanced from prelims to finals.

The Vikings finished the season undefeated, boasting powerful lyrical and jazz routines. The team’s go-to performance song was Whitney Houston’s 1992 cover of the 1974 Dolly Parton hit “I Will Always Love You.” At this rate, Geneva figures to perpetually take its perch atop the state podium, or at least vie for a trophy.

The 2015-16 team featured seniors Olivia Balsey Saltus, Diana Brognia, Elena Cramer, Madeline Emma, Mary Kafer, Mary Kate Kaufman, Nicole Rinne and Gabrielle Weron; junior Nicole Serra; sophomores Susan D’Onofrio, Alexis Pender, Carly Ruggeri, Julianna Severino, Mackinzie Sheridan and Lyndsey Gerbec; and freshmen Kasey Murphy, Jeanine Wagner and Amanda Werner.

Does an extra $4.53 really buy more love?

While that question is debatable, the figure is a fact per research from the National Retail Federation, which reports the average American will spend $146.84 on Valentine’s Day this year, compared to $142.31 in 2015.

If that’s a staggering finding, perhaps this one will resonate equally: The NRF, in a recent article published in Money Magazine, reports that only slightly more than half of Americans celebrate the lovey-dovey holiday, which arrives Sunday.

Think about that. For every gushing greeting card or candy heart in a store aisle or end display, many ostensibly turn the other cheek.

Of course, that doesn’t mean said other cheek still isn’t smiling or rosy. Opinions on Valentine’s Day may vary, but here’s to viewing it as a celebration of love, period, not just the kind couples share. Further NRF findings can attest. V-Day shoppers this year are expected to spend an average of $27.79 on family members, $7.08 on children’s classmates and $5.83 on co-workers, among the total figure listed above.

Then there’s Rover and Fluffy. Are you part of the group expected to shell out a total of $681 million for pet gifts this Valentine’s Day? Whatever your object of affection, we urge you to enjoy the holiday’s warmth without feeling pressure to live up to a quota. Getting together should not always come with a cost, although the candy is a plus.

Time to divert air traffic control THE WASHINGTON POST

The United States can and should learn from the experience of other Western democracies, whether that implies a bigger government or, as is sometimes the case abroad, a smaller one.

Take the prosaic but crucial function of air traffic control. In the U.S., that is still a job for big government: specifically, the Federal Aviation Administration. Overseas, however, countries are turning away from this statist model. Canada spun off its system, Nav Canada, in 1996, to a private entity funded by user fees.

Britain privatized in 2000. Australia and New Zealand also are part of the movement; ditto Germany and Switzerland, lest anyone think it’s English-speaking nations only.

In all of these countries, safety and innovation have stayed the same or improved, which is not surprising, as the new model separates regulation from operation. The U.S. approach, by contrast, keeps those conflicting roles within the same authority. Also, the FAA remains subject to the vagaries of congressional politics, with all the micromanaging and stopgap funding that implies. As a result, a $40 billion FAA modernization program is woefully behind schedule.

Now comes House Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster, R-Pennsylvania, with a bill to adapt successful European and Canadian

models to the U.S. On Thursday, the committee moved his proposal ahead with the hope of passing legislation by March 31, when the current FAA authorization statute expires. A new corporation, funded by charges on the system’s various users, would manage flights and implement the long-stalled modernization. The FAA would still ensure safety, a regulatory job it already does remarkably well and might do even better if it were free to focus on that exclusively. Major players in the industry would share governance of the new entity, working out their differences within its boardroom rather than through the costlier and more conflictual method of lobbying Congress, as they do now.

These groups support Shuster’s plan, including not only commercial airlines but also the air-traffic controllers union, which had objected to similar plans in the past.

This is by no means a panacea: Once upon a time, Congress turned over passenger rail and mail delivery to corporations known as Amtrak and the Postal Service. Much will depend on ensuring the new air traffic entity avoids the governance flaws that left those agencies still unduly dependent on Congress. Still, the stronger demand for air travel, as opposed to train rides and first-class letters, gives reason to hope Mr. Shuster’s proposed entity will at least be financially solvent.

Batavia beats Larkin to clinch share of UEC River title

But Friday night’s game at Larkin showed just how far it has come and why it deserves to be that confident.

The Bulldogs made plays down the stretch – the story of their season – to defeat Larkin, 58-53, to clinch their first Upstate Eight Conference River Division title in school history and first conference title since 2008.

The Bulldogs were members of the Western Sun Conference in 2008.

Not only does Batavia get to say it has done something for the first time in school history, but can make sure it’s more than just a share with a win a week from today at Elgin.

“It’s awesome. You saw the reaction of everyone from the bench, to the fans and coaches. Everyone here deserves this,” Batavia guard Canaan Coffey said. “Just how hard we work each and every day, it’s kind of behind the scenes, but we know what we do, you know. I think everyone deserves it. We were hungry for a win, and executed what we needed to tonight.”

One thing Batavia (18-8, 9-1 UEC River) has not had a problem with this season is its free-throw shooting. However, a first-half effort of 3 for 9 left coach Jim Nazos slightly puzzled.

Nazos knows his team well enough to not mention anything in order to avoid any mental problems in the second half.

“I didn’t say a word about it,” Nazos said. “We say it to ourselves, but they aren’t trying to miss them, you know.

You never want it to be a mental thing. ... That’s the last thing you want.”

The Bulldogs responded.

The team went a perfect 12 for 12 at the line in the second half, including making all eight attempts in the fourth quarter.

Batavia senior Carter Eberhardt not only contributed 12 points Friday, but made a couple of hustle plays that stuck out to Nazos.

“I was just trying to do my thing,” Eberhardt said. “I didn’t really change anything tonight. Shots were falling at times and I got good looks. It’s huge for us to come in here against a really good team like Larkin and pick up the win.”

Andrews said Batavia’s boys and girls also shared Suburban Prairie Conference Red Division titles in 1997.

We’ve been trying to emphasize that and take more charges,” Hondlik said.

“We’re trying to find our identity a little bit, and defense has been coming through for us.”

East coach Pat Woods had Hondlik sagging way off Geneva’s Sean Chambers to clog up the paint. Although Chambers finished with 15 points and a trio of 3-pointers, the Vikings offense looked out of sync for much of the game.

“You can’t guard everything,” Woods said. “We didn’t take a lot of gambles or risks. I thought we played a very patient game defensively.”

“No. 1 point of emphasis was get the ball inside,” Ralston said. “We did one, two, three passes then took a contested 3. Not to say that the 3 isn’t part of our game, but when the emphasis is get the ball inside and you get no post touches, we didn’t follow the scouting report real well.”

Although East trails Batavia – which beat Larkin on Friday night to clinch a share of the UEC River title – by two games with two remaining, the Saints still say they believe a conference championship is a realistic goal.

Batavia would need to lose to Elgin before its final game at East. One win

by Batavia or a loss by the Saints and the Bulldogs are outright River champions.

“Conference is something we’re definitely still going for,” Hondlik said.

ecariio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – DeKalb boys basketball coach Al Biancalana compared Friday’s game against Kaneland to a regional game.

Knights coach Joe Conroy called his team’s 62-56 victory a springboard into the postseason.

Biancalana was much more pessimistic after the loss for the Barbs, which snapped a 16-game winning streak for DeKalb (21-4, 9-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) and would have clinched the conference title.

“This showed our underbelly,” Biancalana said. “If our seniors can’t play with poise, and if our seniors cannot make tough plays, we have no chance.”

The Barbs spent most of the game in the lead, leading by six after a Luke Davis bucket opened the fourth quarter. But Ryan David connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the score for the Knights (14-6, 7-2). Although they were the last field goals of the game for Kaneland, free throws and defense propelled them ahead for good.

“I hope it gives a great boost going

into the rest of the season,” Conroy said. “We have a huge game against Marian Catholic that’s ranked. It’s huge going into the rest of the season, getting ready for regionals. I think we have a vote this week for sectionals (seedings), so it helps us a great deal because DeKalb is a great basketball team.”

The Knights took their first lead at 56-54 when Mark Lilly hit a pair of free throws with 3:18 left. Neither team scored for almost a minute and a half when Dylan Vaca added a free throw with 1:53 left to push the lead to three.

A Cole Tucker bucket cut the Kaneland lead to one, then Ethan Conroy added a free throw with 55.1 seconds left for a 58-56 lead. Tucker tried to drive on the ensuing Barbs possession, then Conroy made another free throw to push the lead to three with 40 seconds left. Mike Pollack missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it, then Kaneland sealed the game at the line.

David finished with a game-high 15 for the Knights, with Vaca adding 13 – including 10 from the line on 12 attempts. Ethan Conroy scored 11 points, and Lilly added 10.

GENEVA – Just a week after the biggest win of its season against rival Batavia, the Geneva boys basketball team had one of its biggest letdowns Friday night.

The Vikings were run off their own floor by St. Charles East, 55-42, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game to snap a 23-game home winning streak for Geneva.

The Saints (13-9, 7-3 UEC River) put together a white-hot shooting performance by making just more than 57 percent of their field goals, draining 8 of 12 shots from behind the arc, while still limiting Geneva (20-6, 6-4) in its post touches.

“Tonight, defensively and offensively, was one of our poorer efforts this season,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “We didn’t have energy.

We showed up with no energy. I don’t know if (it’s) because we beat them soundly at their place that we thought could put in a half-effort. I thought we had learned this lesson earlier in the season.”

Sophomore Justin Hardy led East with 14 points and shut down Geneva’s leading scorer, Bennett Fuzak. The senior forward didn’t get many touches – he was held scoreless until the 5:57 mark of the fourth quarter and made just one field goal – and finished with four points and four fouls.

“Bennett Fuzak is a great player, and our game plan was to limit his shots. That really worked out for us,” Hardy said.

It was that stingy defense that allowed East to pull away in the second quarter. The Saints held the Vikings to just two points in the quarter and parlayed a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter into a 29-13 advantage at halftime.

Basic instincts boost Saints

Emma Vitallo of St. Charles East has helped the Saints maintain their depth throughout the season.

Earning a berth in today’s IHSA Rolling Meadows Sectional continued a season of steady development for the St. Charles East girls bowling team.

“When we started off this season, it started with basics. What boards to use, what arrows to use,” Saints coach Tom Cole said. “And then when they started the progression down to their footing and their ball throw, everything kind of comes into place.”

East secured the fourth and final qualifying spot from last weekend’s Lake Park Regional behind a balanced attack led by senior Abby McSkim-

ming (1,028), junior Emma Vitallo (998) and sophomore Cassie Cartee (969).

The Saints took fourth at regionals in 2015 before placing 11th at sectionals. The top four teams at sectionals advance to next weekend’s state tournament at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

Freshmen Meagan Markovich and Courtney McCarron also have been key contributors to the 2015-16 Saints.

“A lot of new girls come into it.

Even if they had a year or two of experience at a league or something, this is different,” Cole said. “Now we’re getting more of those girls into that experience, and we’re looking to have a pretty good finish to our season.”

“We’ve got to get York first, and that’s all we’re thinking about, even though – and I think everybody in the world knows – that we’ve got Geneva if we can get past York,” North Stars coach Sean Masoncup said. “But York’s a good team. They gave Batavia everything they could handle [in an overtime loss this week], but it’s high school basketball, so anybody can win.”

Best potential regional final, part II: No. 2 Burlington Central (22-4) vs. No. 3 Kaneland (22-4) at Class 3A Burlington Central Regional, 7 p.m. Feb. 19. The geographical rivals did not meet during the regular season, but the Knights channeled plenty of energy last week when the Rockets shared the same gym.

Kaneland watched Central’s tight, 4337, loss to Geneva at the inaugural Kaneland Shootout before defeating West Aurora, 61-45.

“We were super amped up, ready to play, and we saw that game right before,” Knights senior guard Camri Conley said.

“It got our energy going from the stands.

It was a pretty intense game.”

Ditto for the teams’ meeting in last season’s Sycamore Regional semifinal.

The Rockets rallied for a 44-38 victory after trailing the Knights by 10 entering the fourth quarter.

Best area bet to win a regional: Batavia at Class 4A Batavia Regional. The third-seeded Bulldogs (23-5), who shared the UEC River title with Geneva, are thankful to serve as hosts after playing just seven regular-season home games.

“I think we’re in a really good spot,” said senior forward Hannah Frazier, who eclipsed 2,000 career points in Thursday’s regular season finale. “I think we just have all the confidence in the world right now, and we know we can play with anybody in the state. [Coach Kevin] Jensen has been telling us that. We’re coming here for our regional, too, which helps us a lot, so I think we’re going to come ready to play.”

Potential dark horse: St. Charles East.

East entered Friday’s regular-season finale against Schaumburg at 13-15, but had won four of its past five games.

“We’re on an upswing, definitely,” said Saints coach Lori Drumtra, who added that, “I want to be competing; I don’t want to be taking it easy going into the postseason.”

The Saints are part of the Bartlett Regional and seeded 12th in the Schaumburg Sectional complex. They must defeat No. 21 Fenton in Tuesday’s quarterfinal to advance to a semifinal against Wheaton Warrenville South, which topped East at the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament in November.

Austin Macias is a Sophomore with a record of 26-1 and he currently holds the school record for wins in a single season. This spring, he was a Greco State Champion. Austin took 2nd Place at Freestyle State.

This season Austin has reached the finals in four tournaments, winning three of them. He currently leads the team in Take Downs and Pins . Austin works hard on and off the mat and is considered a team leader.

Claire Jakaitis just became the fourth St. Charles North girls basketball in history to reach 1000 points on February 3rd against Streamwood. She has averaged 15 points a game and 7 rebounds for the season.

Earlier this season Claire signed her Division one letter of intent to play basketball at University of Loyola at Maryland. She is only the third girl in North history to receive a full scholarship to a division one university!

After some early-season struggles, David has become one of the most consistent scorers on Kaneland. He highlighted his good stretch with a 28-point, 14-rebound, five-block performance in the Knights’ win over Rochelle recently. David has made over 40-percent of his 3-point shots this season and close to 80-percent of his free throws.

I couldn’t believe it.

“Kissing? Who the heck is she kissing?” I yelled. My daughter stormed back into my room.

“Yes you are! Give me the remote,” she demanded, reaching. I refused, and did as much dodging and weaving as one is able when found prone atop her pillows. Wrestling ensued. It wasn’t pretty.

Holly’s had it with me. If you’ve been reading this column for any length of time, you know that the PBS phenomenon “Downton Abbey” is our thing. It’s been our thing since three years ago when, two years late to the party, we finally discovered what all of the fuss was about.

You know we bought the DVDs and binge-watched the first two seasons, and every time a new episode began we hummed the “Downton Abbey” theme song together – loudly and wildly out of tune. And how, during the opening credits, when a disem-

“No!” I shouted.

“Yes!” She shouted back. Shades of things to come?

Feel-good food from ‘Simply Nigella’ meant to be easy to prepare Prolific cook and cookbook author Nigella Lawson in her latest volume, “Simply Nigella,” (Flatiron Books), makes no apologies for time spent in the kitchen. She explains: “It’s where I want to be.”

Nigella explains her need to feel good “not just when I’m cooking at the table, and afterward, but also before ... planted by my stove, decompressing and letting my mind go.”

Readers – as well as their friends and family – will find plenty to cherish in the 150 uncomplicated recipes Lawson includes in this appealing volume.

Chapters in “Simply Nigella” start with Quick and Calm (simple, speedy to prepare and reliable) and continue to Bowlfood (dishes consumed with fork or spoon, from light soups to pasta and one-pot meals).

She also includes a number of favorite desserts, such as No-Churn Brandied Pumpkin Ice Cream and Bitter Orange Tart.

From the section entitled Dine, discover Chicken Cosima (recipe below), which Nigella reports making for her daughter’s 21st birthday – a recipe containing the young woman’s favorite ingredients.

Note: I found that once the hot broth and drained chickpeas were added to

Heat the oil in a wide Dutch oven or pan (with a lid), and then fry the onion until softened but not really colored.

Add the chicken and all the contents of the bag to the pan, and stir around for a minute or so, then add the peeled and chopped sweet potatoes and stir again.

Pour in the hot broth, and then bring the pan up to a boil and tip in the drained chickpeas. Give it another good stir, then clamp on the lid and put in the oven for 25 minutes.

Check that the chicken is cooked through and the sweet potatoes are tender, then take out of the oven and leave with the lid on to stand for about 10 minutes. Ladle into bowls, sprinkling each with chopped cilantro.

Note on storage: Transfer leftover chicken to a container, then cool, cover and refrigerate within two hours of making. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat leftovers in a saucepan until piping hot. Stir occasionally, adding a splash of water or chicken broth if needed.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Measure the flour, spices and salt into a resealable bag and then tip in the chicken. Shake the bag around to coat the chicken with the floury spice.

Dear Abby: I am 18 and in my sophomore year of college. A month ago, my family went through some major hardships. It came out that “Uncle Mark” has been cheating on my aunt for years and is moving his mistress to our area. They have two children, a son in elementary school and a daughter, “Dana,” 13.

I feel bad for my aunt, but I’m absolutely devastated for Dana. My Uncle Mark has skipped all of her school events in the wake of this mess, and I can’t begin to imagine how disappointed Dana must feel. Uncle Mark is a sociopath. He feels no empathy, manipulates others and has a sadistic streak. Dana was not close to her dad, but since this mess began she’s even less so.

Abby, I don’t want my cousin to feel like she’s alone. Since I’m an older teenager, she looks up to me.

HDL level a complicated story Dear Dr. K: I have high levels of HDL cholesterol – the “good” cholesterol. I was happy about that, but now I hear that medicines raising your HDL levels don’t seem to help.

Should I be disappointed?

Dear Reader: The HDL cholesterol story is complicated. It has been solidly established that people who have high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol have a higher risk of developing heart disease. Moreover, it has been solidly established that treatments that lower LDL cholesterol reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

It also solidly has been established people with HDL levels above 60 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) tend to have a lower risk for heart disease. Since HDL removes cholesterol from the plaques in arteries, that observation made sense. So doctors and scientists developed drugs that raise HDL levels, just as they had developed drugs that lower LDL levels.

Several drugs that raise HDL levels have been around for 30 years, particularly gemfibrozil and niacin. But they raise levels only modestly. These drugs were tested in people with heart disease. They did lower the risk of new heart problems. However, it wasn’t clear if they achieved that benefit by raising HDL or through some other effect.

In the past several years, several different types of drugs were developed that could dramatically raise HDL levels. Most doctors, myself included, bet such drugs would probably reduce the risk of heart disease. Why? Because all the evidence seemed to point in that direction.

Before such drugs were approved by the Food and Drug Administration, however, the agency required that studies involving large numbers of people be conducted to prove the value of the drugs. To make a long and

Worse, in some cases, they have increased the risk.

To make things more confusing, a Harvard study found people with an unusual genetic condition that raises HDL levels did not have fewer heart attacks. The most likely conclusion of this surprising result is it is not the high HDL levels, but rather something else about most people who have high HDL levels that protects them from heart disease.

Many lifestyle changes raise HDL cholesterol and indisputably reduce your risk of heart disease: regular exercise, healthy weight, avoiding trans fats, quitting smoking and moderate use of alcohol. These lifestyle changes may not work through their effects on your HDL level, but they surely and powerfully do work.

So you still should be happy about your high HDL level. In most people, it means they do have a lower risk of heart disease.

And I haven’t given up hope some new HDL-raising drug may produce heart benefits. Or even one of the new drugs already developed, but used in a different dose, may prove beneficial. Until that day comes, you can raise your HDL even higher with the lifestyle changes I mentioned – and definitely improve your overall health as well.
