he rivalry between Batavia and Geneva was put on hold for a few minutes Friday night, as Geneva High School inducted its newest Hall of Fame class in front of a packed house.

The ceremony took place between the girls and boys basketball games.

One by one, former GHS basketball player Taylor Whitley Fieser, former girls head basketball coach and current Spanish teacher Gina Nolan, and former Geneva basketball and football standout

and current principal Tom Rogers took their places in the center of the gym.

Shortly after the ceremony, and as the boys teams were about to warm up, I noticed the three taking a selfie with the Geneva student section. The three inductees were so happy to share the

moment with the current class of fans, where some of the future Hall of Fame inductees just may have been sitting.

Get to know Kelly Hemmerich St. Charles resident Kelly Hemmerich, 39, was at her business, Totally Cool Makeup at 457 Dunham Road in St. Charles, when she answered seven questions for the Kane County Chronicle’s Al Lagattolla. Hemmerich is a permanent makeup artist.

How long have you been doing this? I learned this back in 1998. It was part-time up until about three years ago.

So what you do is permanent makeup?

It’s semi-permanent. Pigment is different than ink. It gradually fades. Your face is different than the rest of your body. You don’t want to use ink on your face.

What brought you here? I wanted to expand and eventually teach. I wanted to have access to more room.

Why might some people come to you

for these services? It’s not always just for vanity. … Sometimes, I have plastic surgeons send clients my way for medical tattooing. It could be something as simple as scar camouflaging to lip reconstructing or even areola tattooing.

Have you lived anywhere else? I lived many years in Europe. I moved to Germany when I was 12, and I lived in a boarding school there.

I lived there until I was 18, then I went to Holland for three years. I had my eyebrows done for the first time when I was 18. I moved back to the States when I was 21.

Do you speak any other languages? I used to speak better German than English.

I’m very fluent.

March court date set for Geneva woman

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Geneva woman charged with fatally poisoning her husband with sleeping pills should know the date of her preliminary hearing next month.

Julia L. Gutierrez, who faces two counts of first-degree murder, was in Circuit Judge D.J. Tegeler’s courtroom Thursday for a brief appearance that included the setting of her next court date, March 9.

The setting of the preliminary hearing is expected at that time.

Also Thursday, the judge overruled an objection from Gutierrez’s public defender about the Kane County Chronicle’s request to photograph the court proceedings.

Julia Yetter’s arguments included the effect such media coverage would have on Gutierrez, who has been on suicide watch.

Allowing cameras in the courtroom would be disruptive and damaging, Yetter said, adding photographs would further sensationalize the case and jeopardize Gutierrez’s right to a fair trial.

Colonial Cafe’s six-scoop dessert turns 40 this year; restaurant chain turns 115

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Since he began scooping ice cream at his family’s business as a teen, Clinton Anderson has crafted hundreds of Kitchen Sinks – Colonial Cafe’s six-scoop ice cream dessert that comes with its own bumper sticker.

Although the ingredient list is straightforward – including two bananas, three toppings plus whipped cream, toasted almonds and a cherry – creating the sundae is a different matter.

“There is an art to creating the Kitchen Sink,” Clinton Anderson said, pointing to “a lot of detail.”

In a year that Colonial Cafe is celebrating its 115th anniversary, the Kitchen Sink is getting attention, too, as it is marking 40 years on the menu.

Former company president Tom S. Anderson – who now goes by the title of director of scoopin’ fun – said the confection was inspired by a dessert he encountered at an ice cream shop in Utah.

Measuring from the bottom of the custom-made stand to the top of the cherry, the concoction stands 15 inches tall. The sundae itself measures about 7 inches high and about 8 inches wide at its base.

As Tom S. Anderson described it, the sundae is large enough for one hungry person or big enough to be enjoyed by many more, such as by families and teams.

“The Kitchen Sink has been a lot of fun for Colonial guests,” he said.

A lot, indeed. On average, Colonial Cafe – which has seven locations, including two in St. Charles – sells about 7,000 Kitchen Sinks a year, according to the company.

For the Perez family on Monday, the $14.99 dessert was part of a birthday celebration for son Fernando Perez Jr. The family, who gathered around a booth at the restaurant’s Randall Road location in St. Charles, described it as a treat.

Those who eat a Kitchen Sink receive a bumper sticker proclaiming their accomplishment. Tom S. Anderson said he has seen the sticker on cars in Chicago, as well as one car bearing 10. He said he has yet to find the sticker on a vehicle out of state.

“I’m looking,” he said.

In 2012, the Kitchen Sink began grabbing attention in traffic in another way: in the form of a larger-than-

In addition to visiting the restaurant sites, the Kitchen Sink Truck also participates in community events, such as parades.

“I think it makes a statement going down the road,” Tom S. Anderson said.

bschory@shawmedia.ocm GENEVA – Three houses on Geneva’s east side recently were burglarized, police stated in an email.

According to police reports recently released, a residential burglary occurred Jan. 21 on the 1100 block of Division Street, in which a firearm, computer and jewelry were taken.

The house was entered through a back door, according to police.

Another burglary occurred on the 1000 block of Westfield Course, in which electronics, jewelry and cash was taken, according to police. The

MAPLE PARK – A burn pile of yard waste that blew embers onto the roof of a dilapidated building led to a roof fire at a barn at 15795 Hinckley Road in Maple Park on Thursday.

“Sparks got up onto the roof,” Maple Park Fire Chief Kevin Peterson said on the scene. “It was just the roof that caught, the rest of it was already gone.”

The building owner plans to tear the building down anyway, Peterson said.

Maple Park and Elburn Fire Departments were on the scene.

“We had called others, but I canceled them because we didn’t need the assistance,” Peterson said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – For years, the Kane County Law Library and Self Help Legal Center had a single page included on the county’s judicial website, www.illinois16thjudicialcircuit.org.

Although the law library’s site still is linked to the judicial website, it launched a new, responsive website this month all its own at www.kclawlibrary.org.

With the new website, lawyers and individuals doing legal research can have an easier time accessing information, making it a responsive design website, law librarian Ellen Schmid said.

“It means it will respond to different screen sizes and technologies in a user-friendly format,” Schmid said, adding that “it will rescale and stay readable … across platforms, whether a computer screen, mobile or tablet.”

Located on the second floor of the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38, St. Charles Township, the law library serves lawyers, as well as members of the public who are representing themselves or who are doing research.

Geneva Park District accepting garden plot applications

GENEVA – The Geneva Park District is accepting applications for garden plots at the Community Gardens at Prairie Green.

The gardens feature 124 garden plots, located on the west side of Geneva at the intersection of Peck and Bricher roads.

Each garden plot measures 20-by-30 feet. The Community Gardens at Prairie Green is a cooperative partnership between the Geneva Park District, the city of Geneva and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

To be eligible for a garden plot, all agreements and fees are required at the time of application dropoff. Gardeners are limited to one plot. Download the application and all forms at www.genevaparks.org, click on the “Parks” tab, then go to Community Garden.

The plot fee is $45 for Geneva Park District residents and $60 for nonres-

Joseph Charles Boyd, Born Dec. 1, 1928, in Taylorville, IL. Only son of Lillian Boyd and Joseph E Boyd with five older sisters. It is interesting that Joe and Dorothy started a period of having boys with 4 sons, 5 grandsons, and then finally the family was blessed with Boyd great granddaughters after 83 years.

Joe enlisted in Navy after high school in 1945.

He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jean McMurry while in the Navy. While Joe was stationed in California they were married to start their 67 year marriage in 1947.

After serving, Joe returned home to farm first in IL and later in MO. Joe was awarded the “Illinois Farmer of the Year?”in 1954. He continued his education at Milliken College in Decatur, IL. Joe had an entrepreneurial spirit; was a farmer, auctioneer, John Deere Dealer in IL & MO, Comptroller & Pilot, Sidwell Aerial Mapping, Pres., DuPage Aviation-Chicago Beechcraft (IL), a founder and Vice Chairman, Dunham Bank (IL), St Charles Rotarian and Pres., Tradewind Turbines (TX). After 24 years in St Charles, IL, he moved his business to Amarillo, TX in 1989, where they lived for 26 years until he found eternal rest. He flew a single engine turbine bonanza to the Paris Air Show to display. He was dubbed “Mr. Prop Jet,” being the only Turbine Bonanza manufacturer in the World. With this aircraft he broke the air Turboprop speed record between Chicago and Boston at 254 mph in 1986.

Batavia sees breakdown in communication

Proposal to hire new public information officer exposes rift within City Council

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A proposal to hire a communications director for the city of Batavia exposed fault lines among aldermen during discussions earlier this week.

At issue was City Administrator Bill McGrath’s recommendation to hire a communications guru, responsible for everything from handling public information requests to crafting a positive city image.

Key of course would be that person’s presence on social media, and this generated questions from aldermen.

“Is that person going to speak for the city, and how?” asked 2nd Ward Alderman Martin Callahan.

More contentious was the idea of making the hire in the first place, after the council had cut the position from its current budget.

“We made cuts,” Callahan said. “We could have cut elsewhere.”

Disagreement over how the city council is setting priorities has been a reoccurring theme during aldermanic discussions at recent meetings.

The rift dates to the 2013 municipal elections, when a new group of aldermen was elected, ousting two veteran council members in the process.

McGrath advised aldermen to get together this summer for a policy-making session.

“You should have a retreat,”

McGrath said. “This is where you get together and talk about priorities.”

As for the communications post, McGrath said the job is sorely needed.

“I think a position of this sort is necessary, and filling it as soon as possible would take a task from the plate of the new administrator,” said McGrath, who will be retiring this summer.

McGrath further described the position as technical, not policy-making, so hiring the person now would not compromise the new administrator’s plans.

The communications director would maintain content on the city’s website, send out emails, draft press releases and manage the city’s Facebook site, among other duties.

“This person would not get involved in social media, except our own,” McGrath said.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said the position is needed in order to maintain transparent government.

Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said the city staff is being diverted from core duties in order to handle communications.

“The key thing is that it returns them the time to do what we pay them to do,” Wolff said.

But Callahan and other newer members of the council said the decision should be made in a larger strategic context, and no action was taken on the proposal.

to request the tax in discussions that took place last year, led by then-Trustee Craig Swan, who no longer is on the board, they looked at figures that showed the village’s tax, at 7 percent, is lower than Batavia (8 percent), Geneva (7.5 percent), St. Charles (8 percent), Sugar Grove (8 percent) and South Elgin (7.5 percent), among other Kane County municipalities.

Anderson, who credited Swan for the idea, said the tax would help an effort that he will be looking at this year – addressing stormwater concerns in the northwest and southeast quadrants of Elburn. He said flooding can create problems for people in their residences and also affects the pavement in the village.

“This is general fund money that could be used for that,” Anderson said.

The tax would affect food sold at restaurants. Annette Theobald runs two downtown Elburn establishments – Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill and Paisano’s Pizza.

“No one likes a tax increase,” Theobald wrote in an email. “However, Elburn needs to make improvements to draw homes and businesses into town. We should not rely on the state for funds. I think we all want Elburn to look the best it can be.”

ELBURN – Village President Dave Anderson said Elburn has needs, such as street repairs, maintenance and stormwater improvements.

He suggested the best solution to those needs is to use what he called “OPM.” That means “other people’s money.”

Village leaders will be seeking a municipal sales tax, which requires voter approval. There will be a referendum question on the March 15 ballot that requests the tax to increase by 1 percent – from 7 percent to 8 percent – in 0.25 percent increments.

The tax will not affect vehicle purchases and medicine. Also exempt will be many grocery items, however, alcoholic beverages and soft drinks will be included in the tax.

Also included in the tax will be food sold at restaurants. The tax increase would help the village’s general fund.

Anderson referred to it as other people’s money because the tax collected would not be limited to village residents, the way a property tax would.

Take Obama’s oil fee proposal seriously THE WASHINGTON POST President Barack Obama wants to raise gasoline prices. It is about time.

In his new budget proposal, Mr. Obama is proposing a $10 a barrel fee on oil, which would translate into about 24 cents a gallon of refined gasoline. He would spend the proceeds on the Highway Trust Fund and on “green” transportation: rapid bus lines, electric-car charging stations, big rail projects and so forth. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, immediately dismissed the idea as “little more than an election-year distraction.”

But the real problem is that the proposal is coming when the political risks for the president are virtually nonexistent.

Repeatedly during Obama’s two terms, Congress had to deal with funding the country’s roads and rails. Repeatedly, the president shied away from supporting the most reasonable remedy: raising the federal gasoline tax to keep up with inflation and infrastructure needs.

Congress patched together a fiveyear highway plan last year using unsustainable sources of funding.

Now that the issue is off Congress’ agenda, Obama is backing a new fuel fee. The president is trying to make a point, not policy, with this proposal.

That said, it’s a good point to make: Too bad it’s late, but better late than never. The case for taxing crude oil or refined gasoline in order to pay for transportation infrastructure begins with fairness: Those who use the roads should help pay for them. But even if the money were used for something else entirely – debt reduction, energy research, lowering other taxes, rebating directly back to Americans – such a tax still would be worthwhile. And Congress should not stop with oil; every fuel should be taxed commensurate with the harm it does to the climate.

When oil prices spiked in years past, Americans cut unnecessary trips and bought more fuel-efficient cars. Now that gas is cheap, Americans are once again buying gas-guzzlers. If it cost more to pollute, Americans would pollute less.

What prompted the litany of Darth Vaders? Perhaps two deaths, one of which a jury declared a murder.

Shadwick King was sentenced to 30 years for killing his wife in July 2014. Early one morning, prosecutors argued, Shadwick became upset that his wife was seeing a younger man, so, naturally, he suffocated her and dumped the body beside the railroad tracks. Why he believed investigators would think a train strangled her, I can’t say.

Then, a couple weeks ago, on my way to school, I spotted two helicopters silhouetted against the dawn sky.

I figured fire, death or “American Idol” winner. The news proclaimed a married couple, who neighbors described as “friendly,” “nice,” and “hardworking,” that apparently had issues. Hearing about such aberrant behavior, I thought of novelist Sherwood Anderson’s masterpiece, “Winesburg, Ohio.” It describes small Midwest towns and their “grotesques.” Not physically ugly, rather, people turn grotesque by taking “beautiful” truths ... “of wealth and poverty of thrift and profligacy” and distorting them. “The moment one of the people took one of the truths to himself, called it his truth, and tried to live his life by it, he became a grotesque and the truth he embraced became a falsehood.”

How else to explain gruesome murders?

Or even less violent behavior?

Looking for some chuckles, I’ll scan the police blotters, each town’s remarkably similar – DUIs, car window smashings, mailbox maulings.

They’re funny because they are so alien from the scenes we paint in our imaginations of our “villages” – canvases filled with unconditional

love for children and spouses; family reunions where never a cruel word is uttered or rumor started; cookouts with neighbors, the drinking social or medicinal, the food nutritious as a July garden.

And the Norman Rockwell Valentine’s Day, flowers hand-delivered, cards SWAK, chocolate boxes tied with pastel ribbons.

The recent deaths suggest that perfumed red roses and succulent Mint Meltaways may mask a myriad of competing emotions. Take the (joking?) response of a friend of ours when my wife, Tia, told her about the woman who was accused of poisoning her husband: “Oh, I know just how she feels!”

May this Valentine’s Day, as Jackie DeShannon sang in the 1960s, “put a little love in your heart!” because, “What the world needs now, is love, sweet love.”

Love, the only truth worth grabbing and holding onto, guaranteed not to turn grotesque, but always stay beautiful.

Redmond-Mattucci shines at Glenbard West Sectional St. Charles co-op sophomore advances to state with third place in all-around

ccasey@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The biggest stars shine brightest on the biggest stages.

For St. Charles girls gymnastics co-op sophomore Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci, Thursday’s IHSA Glenbard West Sectional was her moment.

Redmond-Mattucci finished third overall in the all-around standings (37.3), qualifying for the Feb. 19 and 20 state meet in Palatine.

“This is unreal,” Redmond-Mattucci said. “I mean, last year I did make it to state in two events, but all-around is amazing. I really came in with the goal in high school to make it to state in at least one event all four years, and today was just one step closer to that goal.”

The sophomore also qualified for state in the vault (9.425), uneven bars (9.275) and floor exercise (9.3), so her balance beam score at state will only count toward her all-around score.

She will, however, be joined by teammate and fellow sophomore Grace Levita at state, as Levita’s 9.15 on bars was high enough, per coach Amy Wojdelko, to advance her. Wojdelko did think her team score (141.825) could have been slightly higher, but that score was not only higher than both team scores at conference and the IHSA Geneva Regional, but was also a season-high for the co-op.

That score placed them fourth overall, behind sectional champion DeKalb (147.525), host Glenbard West (146.175) and Lake Park (144.350).

The third and final Chronicle-area state qualifier was Batavia’s Megan McGee. Her floor exercise (9.275) placed her seventh overall at the sectional, but McGee made the cutoff as an at-large qualifier and will compete another time.

Not only is it McGee’s senior season, but after recovering from a broken femur in the offseason, she was extremely excited to know that her gymnastics career will be extended another week.

“I was super nervous for floor, but I always am,” McGee said. “I didn’t think I would ever do gymnastics ever again, but I couldn’t let it end the way everyone was telling me it was going to end. I was expecting to just have low-level skills, but I just kept pushing myself and obviously it paid off. I made it to state last year, but it’s more emotional being out six months with a pretty big injury, so this is great.”

Batavia coach Taryn Boyce had a slightly nervous look when McGee just missed the automatic spot cutoff (top

five), but was extremely relived seeing her get through.

“Megan deserves it,” Boyce said.

“She really does. It would have been tough to see her end it this way. I’m really happy for her.”

While Batavia and the St. Charles co-op advanced individual entries to state, Geneva was unable to qualify any representatives.

Though it’s been an up and down season for the Vikings and coach Kim Hostman, having to deal with a number of injuries, the team continued to

battle. Even though the Vikings did not qualify for state, Hostman did see each gymnast that competed at regionals advance to Thursday’s sectional.

With a fully healthy team returning next season, Hostman likes the place of the program, despite the disappointment at the end of the season.

“What a great experience for all these girls,” Hostman said. “It will just help us build for next year. We know what these girls and capable of and they know what we can accomplish as a team when everyone is healthy.

The younger girls were nervous seeing some of the talent here, but they pulled it together and I really couldn’t have asked for anything more from the girls today or this entire season. The way they battled was great.”

One notable score for Geneva was Molly Lambillotte’s floor (9.0), as well as Paige Beitzel replacing injured Claire Ginsberg (torn labrum) in allaround (36.625), but neither was able to advance to state.

Boyce feels similarly about her team, with a number of strong girls coming back, but getting important sectional experience. She talked at regionals how her team loses the likes of McGee, Lauren Stangl and McKenna Sloan, but gains much more with the experience.

Getting to state is a significant accomplishment and whether McGee, Levita or Redmond-Mattucci place in any event at state, they will be able to look back on the season as a success.

Frazier hits 2K mark as ’Dogs share River crown

kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Hannah Frazier couldn’t conceal the ear-to-ear smile or the game ball she held Thursday night after piloting the Batavia girls basketball team’s latest victory.

The source behind both possessions also was utterly apparent, but the humble senior Bulldogs forward still tried to downplay it.

Yup, Frazier surpassed 2,000 career points as Batavia beat St. Charles East, 62-57, to clinch a share of the Upsate Eight Conference River Division title.

But she implored coach Kevin Jensen before the senior night game not to call timeout when or if the feat occurred.

“Let’s just play the game to win and just focus on that, and we can celebrate afterward,” Frazier said. “And that’s exactly how it hap- Hannah Frazier pened.”

Frazier led all scorers with 30 points, finishing 12 of 17 from the field while swishing 5 of 7 free throws.

She drilled a 3-pointer late in the third quarter, illustrating the versatility that has augmented the 6-foot-2 St. Louis recruit’s effectiveness beyond the paint.

“Teams are going to know to double down in the post, and that’s really what they’re focusing on, so I think when I can come out, that stretches our offense,” Frazier said.

Kelly Rinker (14 points) and Hannah Vitkus (12) rounded out a balanced East attack, but a stretch of balky ballhandling early in the third quarter helped Batavia (23-5, 11-1) build a 10-point cushion that made the difference in the game.

“I thought we were moving the ball around pretty well and getting some good looks at the basket,” Saints coach Lori Drumtra said. “The ref was kind of letting us play, letting both sides play. I thought we could have finished a little better around the basket, but still, I’m really pleased overall with the game. We just had a little bit of a letdown in the third quarter.”

Frazier entered the game with 1,990 career points and finished it with 2,020.

She eclipsed the 2,000-point plateau with her 10th and 11 points on a layup with 3:59 remaining in the second quarter.

A cognizant Bulldogs fan base of both parents and students stood and cheered to salute the feat, but it actually was Drumtra who called timeout moments later.

Sure, Drumtra has respect for a player who has challenged the Saints for the

past four seasons. But she also didn’t want East’s hard-earned momentum to subside. Frazier’s milestone basket gave Batavia a 21-16 edge, but the Saints outscored the Bulldogs, 11-4, during the rest of the quarter to take a 27-25 halftime lead.

Rosenfeldt, who defended Frazier – and vice-versa – for most of the night, gave East the advantage on a driving layup in the closing seconds of the half.

The dash came with surprising efficiency, not unlike East’s overall ball movement against Batavia pressure that forced the Saints into 20 turnovers when Batavia topped East, 62-50, in St. Charles last month. Frazier scored 29 points in that game.

Shea Bayram and Jess Koch added eight points apiece for the Bulldogs Thursday. Batavia shares the UEC River title with Geneva, and Frazier called it an “awesome feeling” to “end out on a great note” with such a close group of teammates.

As for the game ball, Frazier figures she’ll put it on a shelf at home one of these days. She also has the ball from when she passed friend and 2014 Batavia graduate Liza Fruendt’s school-record scoring output of 1,921 points earlier this season.

Fruendt is shining at Missouri State, about a four-hour drive from where Frazier will play her college ball.

“We’ll see what life is like when we move forward,” Jensen said, “but I think there’s going to be some people next year that not many people are going to know about that are going to play real well for us.”

Yes, this was 1988, and there were pennies in them. We were blowing out the Cadets, so my coach, Joe Rodeghero, sent me up to pinch hit. I blasted what should have been an inside-the-park homer over the center fielder’s head, but I wiped out hard between first and second base. Looking back, I probably was concussed, and by the time I got my bearings straight I had to crawl into second base, blood pouring out of both nostrils. My teammates were hysterical; coach was not. He made me run wind sprints for 15 minutes in those same penny loafers. I never forgot my cleats again.

And while I’ve forgotten most of the baseball games I’ve umpired as well as the majority of the sporting events I’ve covered for the paper, I’ll never forget the kids who stood out for being much more than great athletes, as well as the parents who made working as an official and a writer more enjoyable through their kindness, generosity and friendship. These are the things I’ll remember most about both families.

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to Brian Coffey and Dave Young on or near a baseball field. If you had footage, I’d bet it would rival the length of Ken Burns’ baseball documentary miniseries. Likewise, whenever I was basking in the sun on the diamond, I always had complimentary cold water or Gatorade offered my way. They’re just good people.

I’m not sure who first said, “All good things must come to and end.” I know

Jon Young still has his senior baseball season in the spring. Chances are pretty good that I’ll umpire a Cadets game or cover a couple for the paper.

Rumor has it that Jordan Coffey, who is now the graduate assistant pitching coach at Indiana Wesleyan, is recruiting him to play baseball there. That could be a cool fit since Canaan Coffey has already committed to play basketball at Indiana Wesleyan.

It wouldn’t be the first time that the two families would share ties. In baseball, Dave Young coached three of the four Coffey boys, including Micah for eight years, Canaan for five and Jesse for one, as well as all four of his own boys. Brian Coffey even joked that the only way Micah could be coached by someone longer than Dave would be if he becomes a major leaguer.

“The Coffeys are all positive young men,” Dave said. “The fact that they’re excellent athletes is an added bonus, because their leadership and character are more valuable than anything else.”

The tradition continues in college; Micah Coffey is expected to start at third base for Minnesota this season, while Andy Young is a senior at George Washington.

As for the others, Jesse Coffey finished up his basketball career at Taylor University in 2015. Ethan Young is at the Air Force Academy but not participating in any sports, although he’s staying active by boxing. Zack Young is now in law school at Wake Forest after running cross country and track and field at Marquette. He’s still running marathons.

“We’ve been very blessed,” Brian said. “You’re one of the only guys around who can remember seeing the boys play baseball as little guys and have watched them grow and develop over the years.”

I’m glad I didn’t miss it.

The first-place winners in the 2015 Kane County Fair Talent Contest junior and senior divisions competed in the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Talent Contest on Jan. 16 in Springfield.

Representing Kane County were solo vocalist Grace Lenaghan (junior division) and dancers Frankie Henson, Maeve Krzysiak and Caitlyn Mourek (senior division) with Dance Dynamics in Geneva.

Lenaghan, of St. Charles, achieved second place in the state out of 37 entries, according to a news release. She received a trophy and cash prize. She performed “Cinderella Medley,” a theatrical vocal presentation.

Meanwhile, Henson, Krzysiak and Mourek were awarded sixth place in the state out of 34 entries, states the release.

They also received a trophy and cash prize. They performed a dance routine to the music “Trouble.”

“The IAAF really appreciates all the excellent local talent,” said Ron Meyer, president of the IAAF, in the release.

“This competition showcases our youth and was a highlight during this 106th annual convention.”

Dear Abby: I am a divorced father who recently has remarried. I have parenting time with my children one weeknight and every other weekend.

My children have told me during the week they prefer doing their homework at their mother’s home. They say by the time I pick them up, prepare dinner and they start their homework, it’s already time to return to their mother’s. They are at ages where homework assignments can take several hours.

My ex is OK with me spending time with them at her home. She uses the time to run errands and do other things she might not have time for during the week. When there’s no school, I bring the kids to our house. All weekend parenting time takes place at my home.

The problem is, my current wife can’t stand that I spend time with my children at my ex’s home. She doesn’t understand why I won’t bring them here. I feel there’s ample opportunity on the weekends for my kids to be at our house and for her to build a relationship with them.

These medicines usually are combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Two forms of CBT are especially beneficial: anxiety management training and cognitive restructuring.

Anxiety management teaches relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, to help control anxiety. Cognitive restructuring teaches people how to recognize the thought processes that lead to the phobia. It then teaches how to reframe those thoughts and replace them with more productive thinking. Group CBT and social skills training also can help build confidence in social situations.

I once had a patient with an unusual kind of social phobia. A quiet and studious person, by day he was an accountant. That was how he made a living. But he also was musically gifted and had a good voice. Sometimes in the evenings, he would play guitar and sing folk music at local clubs. Immediately after each performance, he always dashed out of the club – before people in the audience could find him. That was because he developed severe anxiety symptoms when mingling with other people. When he could perform from a stage and didn’t have to mingle with the audience, he was fine – so long as they liked his performance. And they always did.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve always thought of myself as shy. But my partner thinks I might have social phobia. Could he be right?

Dear Reader: “Social phobia” goes well beyond shyness. People with social phobia feel a constant and powerful discomfort, self-consciousness and fear of humiliation in ordinary social situations. They feel as though all eyes are turned on them. Social phobia often leads people to avoid parties and other gatherings.

Most people don’t think twice about mingling with new acquaintances. But people with social phobia can have disturbing symptoms.

They may blush, sweat, tremble, feel nauseated and have difficulty talking. Being part of a social gathering may trigger a panic attack.

During panic attacks, people have shortness of breath, sweating, rapid heartbeat, chest pain or a smothering sensation.

If you think you might have social phobia, answer the following questions. If you answer yes to three or more, you might have social phobia. If so, talk to your doctor about your concerns.

• Do you avoid certain situations because you are afraid you’ll embarrass yourself?

• Do you sometimes panic in unfamiliar social situations?

• Do you avoid social situations whenever possible?

• When you can’t avoid social situations, do they cause significant distress or anxiety?

• Does your distress or fear of social gatherings interfere significantly with your work? Relationships with friends and family?

Normal routines?

If you do have social phobia, a doctor probably will recommend medication plus therapy.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a type of antidepressant, usually are tried first. They often are prescribed with a

mother always would tell me to wear a warm coat if I went outside during cold days because she didn’t want me to “catch my death of a cold.”

Now medical science has proven the old way of thinking is not accurate. Colds, the flu and pneumonia are caused by viruses, not by the air temperature.

Researchers in Great Britain settled this debate once and for all. In an experiment, they sprayed people with water and sent them outdoors in cold, windy, wintry weather. None of

them suffered any ill effects, not even a sniffle.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and so is my boyfriend. He is in his first year in college, and I’m working full-time as a checker in a supermarket. We’ve been together for more than two years, and there is a good possibility we will someday be husband and wife.

Five years ago, his father and his father’s best friend were convicted of a crime. His father spent 22 months behind bars, and his friend was incarcerated for 30 months.

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I’d really like you to answer it. Is crime an inherited trait, and if we did get married, could our children be at risk? – Nameless, Moline Nameless: No. There’s nothing genetic regarding criminal behavior. Crime is an individual moral choice, but can be fostered in an abusive, dysfunctional family environment. If the two of you are loving, supportive parents, your children will grow up to be good citizens.

It is easy for declarer to be careless near the beginning of this deal.

How should South play in three notrump after West leads a fourth-highest club six to the 10 and jack?

North’s three-club rebid was New Minor Forcing. He was hoping his partner could show three-card heart support. However, when South indicated only a doubleton heart, North signed off in three no-trump.

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, one heart, three diamonds and one club (at trick one). He can get the extra winner from either red suit -- but which should he attack first?

Most players would realize that taking the heart finesse is too dangerous. If it loses, East will return a club through South’s king and into the jaws of West’s ace-queen. Here, West would take four tricks in that suit to defeat the contract.

Instead, many declarers would play a diamond to dummy’s ace and return a diamond to their king -- and suddenly find that they could no longer make the contract. East would gain the lead in one red suit or the other.

South should take a safety-finesse, covering dummy’s diamond nine with his 10. Here, declarer would end with an overtrick. But even if West could take the trick, the contract would be safe.
