KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – A longtime member of the Kane County Forest Preserve Commission was recently honored with a statewide award, according to a forest preserve news release.

John J. Hoscheit, who recently stepped down as the commission’s president, received the Illinois Association of Park Districts’ highest honor, the Commissioner of the Year Award.

It was presented at the organization’s annual awards luncheon on Jan. 23 in Chicago.

According to the re-

lease, the award recognizes those who have displayed outstanding leadership, service and advocacy in support of conservation, recreation, parks and open space throughout John J. their comHoscheit munity and state.

The forest preserve district – along with district counsel Patrick Kinnally of Kinnally, Flaherty, Krentz & Loran – nominated Hoscheit for his accomplishments during his 19

years of service, 12 of which he served as president, the release states.

In a statement, Hoscheit thanked the forest preserve commission and staff. He said cooperation and dedication have been key components of the district’s success.

“One thing I’m most proud of is our relationship with our park districts,” Hoscheit said, noting the number of intergovernmental agreements in place.

“We’ve been able to take our money and invest it, leverage it with their resources and expertise, and create great facilities for the community.”

Monica Meyers, forest preserve district executive director, said in a statement that Hoscheit is more than deserving of recognition.

“The forest preserve district manages more than 20,000 acres of open space for conservation, education and recreation – and John’s a key reason for our success,” she said.

“It’s amazing to think we held just 7,000 acres 15 years ago. We’ve come a long way with the strong support of Kane County residents and John’s leadership. We’re thrilled that both John and the forest preserve district are being acknowledged on a statewide level.”

State approves N. Aurora, STC medical marijuana dispensaries

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The state has approved medical marijuana dispensaries planned for St. Charles and North Aurora, but it denied an application for a proposed medical marijuana cultivation center in Batavia.

Pharmacann LLC plans to open a medical marijuana dispensary in a building at 161 S. Lincolnway in North Aurora. The building also houses a Veterans Health Administra-

tion clinic.

The state’s Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act became law Jan. 1. Patients with a variety of illnesses can apply for medical marijuana.

Debilitating conditions recognized by the state’s medical marijuana law include cancer, glaucoma, Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. The registration of patients and designated caregivers will be regulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

According to the department’s website, qualifying patients may possess up to 2.5 ounces of medical cannabis in a 14-day period from an authorized medical cannabis dispensary. Patients younger than 18 are not qualified for the program.

“We think it really does make a difference in people’s lives,” said Teddy Scott, CEO of Pharmacann LLC. “Almost everyone knows a person who had to suffer through cancer.”

His company also has been

given permission to open dispensaries in Ottawa, Schaumburg and Evanston, along with a cultivation center in Dwight.

Healthway Services of West Illinois LLC also received state approval to open a medical marijuana dispensary in St. Charles. Irina Zhukovsky, principal officer of Healthway Services, on Wednesday declined to say exactly where the dispensary will be located.

The city’s zoning code requires the dispensary to be located in the city’s manufac-

turing district, said Rita Tungare, community and economic development director for St. Charles. She said Healthway has not applied to the city for a building permit, noting that would be required if improvements are made to a property.

The state denied PharMar Farms’ application for a planned marijuana cultivation center at 1375 Paramount Parkway in Batavia. The Batavia City Council in September unanimously voted to support PharMar Farms’ application.

Kane County sees growth in electric vehicle charging station use

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County in recent years has offered free electric vehicle charging at set-up stations – and it appears motorists are taking advantage of the equipment.

The county’s first charging station was installed in April 2012 at the Kane County Courthouse in downtown Geneva and was later upgraded to a dual station, Resource Management Coordinator Cecilia Govrik told a Kane County Board committee Wednesday.

As of Feb. 3, she said, the county has provided 964 charge-ups, which have saved 577 gallons of gas and 1,930 kilograms of greenhouse gases.

More specifically, usage increased from 249 sessions in 2013 to 572 sessions in 2014, she said.

Providing the service cost the county $120 for electricity and $170 for the data plan in 2013, and $277 for electricity

and $340 for the data plan in 2014, because of the dual station, Govrik said.

This year’s costs are estimated at $300 for electricity and $500 for the data plan for a total of $800, an increase of almost $200 from last year, she said.

At some point, the county likely will have to discuss implementing a fee for the charging stations, Govrik said, noting that topic came up during an update last year.

Setting up the charging stations for payment would take a couple of weeks, she said.

Barb Wojnicki, Energy and Environmental Committee chairman, said the key is that the county didn’t have initial costs because the stations were funded through grants.

The initial charging station was bought with a federal grant, Govrik said, and the upgrade to a dual station was funded through riverboat funds. She said a partial rebate is expected from the state for

the dual station.

The county’s sustainability plan includes a goal of expanding alternative fuel infrastructure as needed, Govrik said.

She noted a third station has been installed at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva to charge a county vehicle. That location is using old equipment that was in storage, she said.

ISSUES IN CAMPTON HILLS Village officials struggle to agree as elections approach

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The picturesque village of Campton Hills, with its semi-rural atmosphere and sprawling lots, was incorporated in 2007 by voter referendum.

The action was not without controversy. Some opponents disconnected, while others staged another referendum to dissolve the village – an effort that was unsuccessful.

Now Campton Hills is in a new controversy – a deep division between a majority of trustees and Village President Patsy Smith.

B o a r d meetings – with special meetings afterward – can go from about 6:30 p.m.

Trustees have been calling their own special meetings and now have their own legal counsel, in addition to the village attor- Harry Blecker ney.

Meetings have been so fraught with contention that, at times, elected officials pass around a copy of “Robert’s Rules of Order” to allow the holder of it the right to speak uninterrupted.

The village’s voters face a primary election Feb. 24 and a slate of write-in candidates in the consolidated election April 7 that will spell change no matter which side wins.

But officials can agree on one thing: Incorporating as a village was the right thing to do. And despite the disagreements, Campton Hills will go on to accomplish good things for its residents.

“It’s a good village,” Trustee Harry Blecker said. “It does a lot of things right.”

In a statement, Smith said that by incorporating, the village of 20 square miles created an opportunity to plan its future.

Trustee James Kopec, an incorporator who is finishing his second term on the Village Board, said becoming a village was “absolutely necessary.” He is not seeking re-election.

“What we were facing at the time was control of the destiny of the area,” Kopec said. “Basically, 10 years or 20 years down the road, all the area [of the village] would be annexed to other municipalities that would not necessarily continue with the semi-rural community we wanted.”

That is where the agreement seems to end of late.

Blecker is running for village president Feb. 24 on the primary ballot. When his name advances to the consolidated election ballot, he will run against incumbent Smith, who has declared herself a writein candidate. She is seeking a third term.

Considering how the sides are drawn, the race appears to be as much a municipal election as it is a referendum on Smith’s leadership.

“We have somebody who is running the village right now that just thinks her way is the only way,” Blecker said. “And there is not a lot of compromise.

Patsy does not want to compromise. It’s her way or no way.”

Trustee Laura Andersen, who is seeking a second term, said village leadership has to change.

“Constructive leadership is a skill this president has not demonstrated,” Andersen said.

“My opinion is not isolated. A majority of the board believes leadership changes need to happen.”

Smith calls the board’s divisiveness the result of a majority block of trustees. Those trustees are Al Lenkaitis, Susan George, Andersen and Blecker.

Campton Hills has a Village Hall, a police department and other government services, all while keeping its vow not to levy property taxes. our board of trustees has become dysfunctional and political, with some trustees putting their own interests ahead of what is best for the village,” said Smith in the statement. “It is time for a change in trustees and time to get back to business.”

In the statement – which also announced her candidacy and the slate of write-ins – Smith noted that April 7 will be the eighth anniversary of the referendum that created the village.

••• The recent divisions in Campton Hills have been going on for months.

The board majority does not put full faith in its longtime village attorney, William Braithwaite, saying he seems more like Smith’s attorney, so it hired its own counsel.

“In our opinion, Mr. Braithwaite is interpreting the municipal code and the laws to fit Patsy’s requirements, rather than protecting the village,” Blecker said. “We felt it necessary to hire an attorney that is going to protect the village.”

Smith disagreed, saying Braithwaite is the village’s at-

torney.

The board majority does not trust the minutes, either, blaming Smith for “editorializing” them, so a court reporter now provides transcripts for meetings.

Smith disputes that, as well.

“Go back and look at the transcript, and determine whether that’s an accurate statement or not,” Smith said.

Smith wants to replace Police Chief Daniel Hoffman, but the board majority has blocked her every attempt. She wants to remove Lenkaitis from the board, asserting he’s moved out of the village, but the board majority has not allowed that, either.

Trustee Michael Millette compared the board’s dysfunction to a stage of adolescent development.

“I think we are transitioning from where we had to be to get started, and where we should be to go forward,” Millette said.

“We got a [village] administrator, and that has been a long desired outcome for myself and other trustees. But the transition has not been smooth.”

Two write-in candidates also have declared for the primary ballot: Steve Galloway for trustee and Nicholas Girka for clerk.

If Galloway gets 10 percent of the total votes cast for the lowest vote-earning trustee who is on the ballot, his name will be printed on the April 7 consolidated election ballot, said Suzanne Fahnestock, supervisor of elections for the Kane County Clerk’s Office. In order for Girka to have his name printed on the April 7 ballot, Fahnestock said he would need 18 votes, which is 1 percent of the 1,744 votes cast for village clerk in 2011.

Galloway is an ally of Village President Patsy Smith, and Girka is aligned with Blecker. If Blecker is not elected village president, he will remain on the board as a trustee.

Also for the April 7 election, Smith is a write-in candidate. Her slate of write-ins are Mike Turgeon and Don Sheluga for trustee, and Stephany Impson for clerk.

Early voting for the primary election continues through Feb. 21, either at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building B, Geneva, or at the Campton Township Community Center, 5N082 Old LaFox Road, Campton Hills.

The day of the primary election, Campton Hills residents can vote at their regular polling place.

Campton Hills’ unpaid administrator for about seven years.

Millette said it has been difficult for Smith to give the responsibility to Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen, who

At one point late last year, Smith put Johnsen on paid leave for an unstated reason, but trustees brought her back.

Neither Johnsen nor Hoffman would comment about the situation.

“We would not be where we are if Patsy was not the person she is,” Millette said. “But that is not sustainable. … The administrator and the village president, they both want the same thing – what is best for the village. But how are we going to get there? That is the trick.”

A longtime Smith ally, Millette said he considers himself not aligned exclusively with either side on the board.

“I think I’m the middle of what little middle there is,” Millette said. “One side is attacking it one way; the other side wants to attack in the other way. I’m holding the rudder steady.”

From his point of view, Kopec said the problems will pass.

“Big picture, long term – we’ll get over it,” Kopec said.

“It’s going to be up to the newly elected board to resolve what is left of any disputes when they take office. I’m hoping before they take office, some of these things will have come to a head and be resolved amicably. Or, if necessary, in court.”

CAMPTON HILLS – Objections filed Wednesday ask the Campton Hills Electoral Board not to allow a slate of write-in candidates to be considered by voters.

The objections were filed at Village Hall by attorney James Newman of Campton Hills.

Newman’s objections assert that the April 7 write-in candidacies of Patsy Smith for village president, John Turgeon and Donald Sheluga for trustee, and Stephany Impson for clerk should not be allowed because they did not file their declaration of writein candidacy to Interim Village Clerk John Strauss.

Newman’s objections state that Strauss was not at Village Hall to receive the declarations when they were submitted.

Strauss’s original memo about filing as a write-in candidate stated the deadline to file was 5 p.m. Feb. 5 with the clerk at Village Hall.

should be made and that the date and time each was filed needs to be recorded. He asks that the four write-in candidacies be excluded.

Newman’s objections also seek to remove trustee writein candidate Steven Galloway from consideration, even though he is not declared for the April 7 consolidated election ballot, but rather for the Feb. 24 primary ballot.

He charged that Galloway improperly submitted his name as a write-in candidate for the April 7 consolidated election for the same reasons as listed for the other candidates, but also because he filed for the primary, as well, which is not allowed.

Newman did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

Galloway’s attorney, Kenneth Shepro, said Galloway’s filing for the April 7 election as a write-in was in error and was withdrawn. Galloway is declared as a write-in candidate for the primary.

“There is no procedure or precedent to convene a village electoral board to pass on objections to a write-in candidate,” Shepro said.

Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Erna (Prazak) Marousek, Jr.; her brother, Donald; and sister in law, Doris (Hiler) Marousek; her husband,

John B. Hultgren; her son, John B. Hultgren, Jr.; in laws, Claes L. and Emily B. Hultgren, Ann Josephine (Hultgren) Kraft Rogers, 2nd Lt. Richard G. Rogers, William Kraft, Carol (Perakis) Hultgren.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy (Marousek) Moriearty; brother in law, Claes L. Hultgren; her daughter, Holly; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The quote in Dottie’s high school senior yearbook “I’ll be happy, I’ll be glad, but I’ll never, ever be sad”, was most befitting her outlook on life and her kind, sweet nature.

Dottie Hultgren a familiar figure around Geneva shops, restaurants, garage sales and flea markets for more than 50 years, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 1, 2015, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Dottie was born in Chicago on August 25, 1925, the first child of Frank and Erna (Prazak) Marousek,

Corps and while he was home on leave they decided to marry on February 17, 1945.

After high school, Dottie worked for The Associated Press in Chicago until she married Jack.

While Jack earned his degree at the University of Illinois, Dottie worked for The U of I Extension Office in Champaign. After Jack completed his degree in 1950, they returned to Riverside, where they started their family. In 1959, Dottie, Jack and family moved to Geneva where they remained.

Since high school, Dottie was interested in cooking, baking and home decorating and created a

Woman charged with drug-induced homicide

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 23-yearold woman was charged Tuesday in connection to the Dec. 14 death of a 23-year-old man, St. Charles police announced Wednesday in a news release.

Katharyn M. Stanish, of the 1400 block of Tonset Lane, Schaumburg, faces one count of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony, the release states.

Bond was set for Stanish on Wednesday morning at $150,000, and she was released before noon that day from the Kane County Jail after posting $15,000, Katharyn the required M. Stanish 10 percent amount, according to online jail records.

Police learned that Stanish bought and supplied the drugs used by the 23-year-old man on Dec. 10 that later resulted in his death, according to the release. The man was identified as Bradley J. Schiller of Bartlett, St. Charles police spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said.

About 9:58 p.m. Dec. 10, St. Charles police responded to a call that Schiller was unresponsive on the floor of a St. Charles hotel room.

Once the officers arrived, the caller – later identified as Stanish – said she thought Schiller overdosed on heroin and/or cocaine, the release states. Officers performed CPR on Schiller while waiting for paramedics, who took him to Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

About 9:30 p.m. Dec. 14, hospital officials notified St. Charles police that Schiller had died. Forensic reports indicated that Schiller’s immediate cause of death was because of cocaine and heroin intoxication, according to the release.

After police learned of Stanish’s connection to the death, a felony charge was authorized, and a warrant was issued for her arrest, Blackwell said. She was taken into custody on Tuesday, the release states.

Police do not know exactly why Stanish and Schiller were in St. Charles, Blackwell said.

Stanish’s next court date is March 20 at the Kane County Judicial Center, according to court records.

LOCAL BRIEFS GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars organization will host the fourth annual Ozzie’s Home Run and Walk 5K at 8 a.m. May 30 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, 34W002 Cherry Lane, Geneva.

Ozzie’s Home Run and Walk 5K will start and finish on the field at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with the finish line at home plate.

NEW DEVICE GIVES SIGHT TO THE BLIND The FDA has approved the use of a device that translates video signals into data that the optic nerve can process. The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis system is designed to sidestep damaged photoreceptors in the retina and send signals directly to the next layer of retinal cells, which are on the pathway to the optic nerve. The device does this by using a miniature camera positioned in eyeglasses to capture images and send them to an external computer, which transforms them into signals that the second layer of retinal cells can understand. Data is then sent back to the glasses, which transmits the information through a small antenna to an array of 60 tiny electrodes implanted in the patient’s retina.

And part of the way to designate yourself is to create a marketing plan that shows you are your own village. It is a goal in our strategic plan to create a branding initiative.”

NORTH AURORA – Village leaders hope a new village logo and motto will help strengthen North Aurora’s identity.

Village trustees recently looked at five logo designs and mottos that were created

by Geneva-based Rue 29. The village’s current motto, “The Village with a View to the Fu-

ture,” is about 20 years old, Village Administrator Steve Bosco said.

“We want to create a clear identity for North Aurora,” Bosco said. “So, when you come into North Aurora, you know you’re in North Aurora.”

The five motto suggestions submitted to trustees were: “The Crossing Of Community and Nature,” “Where Nature and Culture Connect,”

“Crossroads on the Fox,” “A Community, Connected” and “A Village That Connects.”

Trustees chose three mottos for further review – “Crossroads on the Fox,” “A Community, Connected” and “A Village That Connects.”

In addition, trustees want to take a closer look at two of the logos that feature the Fox River along with the State Street bridge.

St. Charles man cited, injured after car crashes into house

By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com HAMPSHIRE – A St. Charles man was issued a citation after a crash Monday that sent him and his passenger to the hospital, and left a Hampshire home considerably damaged,

the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said. The incident occurred about 11:20 a.m., Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said.

A Subaru Impreza, driven by 23-year-old Zachary Mikulski, of St. Charles, was going westbound on Higgins Road when it went off road and struck the

back end of a house on Woodview Parkway, Gengler said.

Mikulski reportedly lost control of the vehicle cresting a hill.

“The vehicle went at least partially into the house,” he said. “There was considerable damage.”

Both the driver and the

passenger, 44-year-old Jeffrey Mikulski, of Whitewater, Wisconsin, were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin for injuries that were not life-threatening, Gengler said.

There was at least one occupant in the house, but no one inside was injured. The vehicle

sustained heavy front-end damage, Gengler said, adding it appears the vehicle was going faster than the 55-mph speed limit.

As a result of the crash, Zachary Mikulski was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Gengler said.

Officials: Elgin Community College student among measles cases

By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com ELGIN – A Cook County resident with a confirmed case of measles was determined to also be a student at Elgin Community College, officials said.

“This is not a new case

of measles,” stressed Tom Schlueter, spokesman for the Kane County Health Department. “It’s already been counted in Cook County.”

News that an ECC student accounted for one of several measles cases in Illinois recently came through the Cook County Department of Health,

Schlueter said.

ECC was notified Monday, he said.

“We will be working with both the Cook County Health Department and Elgin Community College to do contact tracing to see if there’s any risk to any other students or staff,” Schlueter said.

On Tuesday, the college got the go-ahead to inform possibly affected students and staff, said Jeff Julian, the college’s executive director of communications.

Before being diagnosed, the student attended class Feb. 3 and 5, and visited the library Feb. 3, according to

The St. Charles Park District will host its first “Run Fur Fun” event March 8. The event is for dogs of all shapes and sizes, as well as their human companions.

The race begins and ends at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Drive, St. Charles. Early-bird registration is available through March 1.

The fee is $30 per human and one four-legged friend.

Regular registration – up to and including the day of the

event – is $45. Check-in will be between 8:30 a.m. and the 9 a.m. kick-off time. The race is open to humans ages 12 and older, and one does not need to bring a dog along in order to join the race – although prizes are awarded only to canine competitors.

“We encourage participants to come out before race day to become familiar with our grounds,” said Jourden-Messerich, noting that animals particularly appreciate having time to get to know new surroundings.

The dog park at James O. Breen Community Park is open every day from dawn to dusk.

And the fun doesn’t stop when the last foot and paw cross the finish line. After-race fun includes refreshments – hot dogs, of course – and the chance for two- and four-legged racers to mix and mingle.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to make new friends,” Jourden-Messerich said.

“We’re really excited to be able to offer this type of event to dogs and dog-lovers.”

A ‘roaring’ good show Although Super Bowl XLIX was about a week and a half ago, as I write this it’s currently the day after the most significant event for millions of crazy football fanatics out there. And while all the salty potato chips, spinach dip and buffalo wings have been consumed, I still feel like I’m allowed to talk about this year’s Super Bowl.

Truthfully, I wasn’t too excited for the football part of the show. While this logically makes no sense, I’m sure I’m not the only one who was forced to watch the game because every boy in their family demanded it. No, I’m not here to give you a playby-play of every second of the game. If you must know, I wanted the Patriots to win.

I have no idea why I wanted them to beat the Seahawks, but I did.

As mentioned, I won’t be able to explain any of the highlights to you. (I’m more of a hockey fan.) I simply had the game on in the background so I could watch some of the commercials. On the other hand, I can say that I watched the entire Puppy Bowl, since the players in that game were remarkably cuter than the ones in full sweaty football gear.

The main reason why I watched the Super Bowl was for the halftime performance, or should I say, the Katy Perry concert. Right now there are endless amounts of hysterical blog posts online and TV newscasters who have overly dissected her performance. I’m sure everyone will be tired of hearing about it by the time this column rolls out. Still, that doesn’t mean I cannot explain how I actually thought the performance was quite enjoyable and hilarious.

Not only did she sing all of her hit songs, accompanied by wacky fiery costumes and bouncing strobe lights in

I didn’t see Bruno Mars riding on an enormous hippo last year, so this lion was the perfect eye-catcher to start the halftime show with a bang.

And while Perry herself was amusing, the special appearances by Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot may have overshadowed her just a bit.

By far, the best part of Perry’s performance had to be when she transformed the stage into a cartoon beach party filled with smiling palm trees, beach balls and the famous confused dancing blue sharks.

I adored that these bopping beach characters even opened their mouths and “sang” along with Perry.

During this part of the show, I just laughed as I imagined a group of middle-age men gathered in a crowded bar while watching this entirely kid-themed performance.

The halftime spectacular even ended in style, as Perry flew around, sang her famous song “Firework,” and then, yes, had fireworks go off around the stadium.

It’s a shame that now we all have to wait another 12 months before witnessing a day dedicated to TV commercials, with a side of a wild halftime show. Err, I mean Super Bowl.

Williams suffers the ‘denominator problem’

By CASS SUNSTEIN Bloomberg News Brian Williams and Sam Smith may have little in common, apart from being award-winning celebrities, but at the moment both are being held accountable for wrongdoing. Together, the two cases spotlight a risk that anyone in public life must run. Let’s call it the “denominator problem.”

Think of a person’s life as a stream of actions that can be expressed as a fraction: The total is the denominator, and the bad acts are the numerator. For any public figure, there are bound to be many known actions in the denominator, and at least a few in the numerator. Yet if we judge the person by the numerator alone, we end up with a distorted and unfair impression.

Sam Smith won four Grammys for “Stay With Me,” but the song’s chorus

sounds nearly identical to Tom Petty’s 1989 hit “I Won’t Back Down” – so much so that, just last month, Smith agreed to give Petty both a songwriting credit and significant royalties.

Smith has faced little criticism for this duplication.

There has been no serious scandal, perhaps because musicians are known to borrow from one another, and perhaps because of Petty’s gracious words, which explicitly signal the denominator problem: “All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door, but in this case it got by. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement.”

Williams has been subject to a more severe penalty: six months’ suspension from his job as “NBC Nightly News” anchor, without pay.

His offense was to misstate, repeatedly, his experience on a military helicopter in Iraq, in a self- aggrandizing way. (Unfortunately, this particular misstatement appears not to be his only one.)

That’s worse than a mistake.

Unlike a musician, and more like a politician, a news anchor needs and relies on public trust. And the public naturally gets angry if he violates it.

Fair enough. The problem is that when people focus on a particular misdeed, it can distort their overall judgment. One transgression – or a few – ends up overwhelming the whole picture. And in Williams’ case, that’s wrong. He’s had an exceptionally distinguished career. He is rightly being held accountable, but he hasn’t exactly committed a felony.

set for Valentine’s Day

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELGIN – The Community Crisis Center in Elgin is partnering with other groups to host The Long Red Line-Voices Unite to End Violence from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

Those who attend the event, which aims to prevent violence and sexual assault and is part of the One Billion Rising initiative, are asked to bring a red scarf or cloth that can be joined with others to create a mile-and-a-half red line, said Maureen Manning-Rosenfeld, director of client services for the crisis center.

“This is a worldwide global effort to unite together and end violence against women – domestic violence, sexual as-

sault, sex trafficking, all different types of violence against women,” Manning-Rosenfeld said.

The name One Billion Rising comes from the statistic that one in three women in the world will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, which equates to one billion women.

Manning-Rosenfeld said the event coincides with Valentine’s Day to contrast that not everybody celebrates with flowers, hearts and candy.

“For some people, it’s a sad day,” Manning-Rosenfeld said.

“We encourage everybody to come out and join us.”

The first portion of the event will be outside, showing the red mile-and-a-half line; the second half of the event will be inside of the library for speakers and refreshments, she said.

Batavia’s Brankin writes first book ‘The Family Girl’ first installment in book trilogy, tells story of assassin

atavia resident Katherine Brankin decided to make her first book a thriller.

“The Family Girl” tells the story of assassin Catalina Bennett, who is following in the footsteps of her father, a retired assassin. The book is the first installment in a trilogy that Brankin is writing.

“The Family Girl” is available in the United States as an ebook on Amazon Kindle, Apple iBooks, Google Play, Barnes & Noble and Blio.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to interview Brankin, who also owns her own graphic design business.

Eric Schelkopf: I understand that you were born in Russia.

Katherine Brankin: Yes, I moved to the United States when I was 16. I’ve lived in the United States longer than I was in Russia.

Schelkopf: What inspired you to write the book?

Brankin: One day, I kind of thought, well, you drive in these subdivisions, but what happens behind closed doors? You start imagining different scenarios.

Perhaps these people have unique lives.

I love thrillers and spy novels. I’m a huge James Bond fan.

And it just kind of clicked for me. And I’ve always loved strong female characters.

There hasn’t been a strong female character that is an assassin by choice, not driven by revenge. She made the choice to follow in her father’s footsteps and become an assassin.

She knew about the lifestyle. She knew what it was, and she made that choice.

Schelkopf: How long have you been thinking about writing this book?

Brankin: I wrote it in chunks. It came in bursts. And it all kind of pieced together.

Schelkopf: The fact that you were born in Russia, does that have anything to do with the subject matter?

Brankin: Not really. But I grew up on fabulous Russian literature.

I grew up with a book in my hand. I loved a good story, and I love a story where you just dive into it, and you disappear into that world.

And I also love a story with action that drives you, and that you can picture in your head. When I write, everything plays out in my mind as a movie.

Schelkopf: So, you hope that your readers can really visualize what is happening?

Brankin: Yes. I’m a highly visual person, and I [visualize] everything. And I also realize that a lot of people don’t read as much any more. So, I wanted to bring the excitement of television and film back into reading by creating vivid characters, really clear action and a story that moves fast.

I wanted them to go along and get excited, just like watching a movie.

Schelkopf: I understand you have started writing the second book.

Brankin: “The Family Girl” came out in October. And as soon as the book came out, I already had the second one sitting on my desk.

There were several reviews of “The Family Girl” where people were saying, “I hope it is the start of a series.” The plan is to have a trilogy. Whether it goes beyond that, I haven’t decided.

There’s a lot of characters that could also have their own story.

Schelkopf: So, there could be spin-off books?

Brankin: Potentially, yes. There could even be a prequel about her father and his career.

Schelkopf: “The Family Girl” has received some good reviews. That must please you. Does that give you gratification?

Brankin: It makes me realize that it was a long road, but it was worth it. And it’s helping me to move forward on my second book.

I’m pleasantly surprised that the book also appeals to men as well. It’s not just for women.

Guys like it, too. They like the characters. And they love all the toys.

Schelkopf: In sitting down to write “The Family Girl,” did the words come pretty easily?

Brankin: Yes. I write, I guess, the same way they shoot movies, out of sequence.

I have a loose idea of the overall story, and then I put Photo by Katherine Brankin it all together in pieces.

I write at really weird times. I don’t sit down in the morning and say, “Today, I’m going to write so many words.”

Sometimes I write in my car, sometimes I write when I’m waiting to pick up my 8-year-old son, Danny, from H.C. Storm Elementary School. I’ve written dialogue and plot points on the backs of receipts.

Schelkopf: This is your first book. Do you have any advice for people thinking of writing a book?

Brankin: I tell everybody to keep on writing and don’t give up. My motto is that good things come to people who wait.

As long as you believe and edit a lot, it will happen.

Winemaker shows off the fruit of Argentina There was a time when the wine industry in Argentina simply followed the crowd.

It was the new kid on the block on the world stage, and critical acclaim often followed wines from Europe and the United States. But, a savvy new contingent of winemakers has pushed Argentina to stand alone to represent the country’s distinctive terroir and interpret its uniqueness in authentic ways.

At Trapiche, winemaker Daniel Pi has done just that, crafting outstanding wines that identify with the soil and climate from which they come.

He’s done so at an amazing value, which makes it even easier to experience the wine revolution that is underway.

Winemaker spotlight It was easy to pick overripe fruit and use plenty of oak in the cellar.

This was the Argentina that had yet to find its way.

While it allowed consumers to find great values and enjoy wines that were drinkable, it was a cookie-cutter philosophy that Argentina needed to shed.

With all of the benefits of a unique wine terroir, it was only a matter of time before an ambitious winemaker in Argentina decided consumers should experience the nuances of fruit grown at 3,700 feet in the Andes Mountains. The diverse alluvial soils that formed from water washing down the Andes Mountains should be represented in the wine. An abundance of sunny days and desert conditions provide an ideal setting for vines to strive.

Those are the stars of the new Argentina, not the oak barrels, ripe flavors or post-harvest production tricks in the cellar.

“In the mainstream wine world, no one knew Argentina,” Daniel Pi said. “We were just like drivers on a highway. We did what everyone else did just to keep moving along. To the wine consumer, we were the black sheep of the industry.

“But, today, everyone knows Argentina. It’s time to show off our potential. We are a leader at Trapiche in doing so. We think it is our responsi-

bility to tell Argentina’s story to the rest of the world, and we love the opportunity to do so.”

The Trapiche Broquel, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012 ($18), has a chalky mid-palate and finish. Had the label read Napa Valley, I’d have thought it was from Napa Valley’s Stag’s Leap District. If it was, the price would be drastically higher.

The fruit is from 40-year-old vines grown at 3,700 feet. The clay soils yield to cassis, leather, ripe raspberry flavors and distinct tannins.

“We are trying to make a balanced wine,” Pi said.

“We used to have a wine that featured more cooked fruit flavors and was on the jammy side with marmalade characteristics. We pick a little earlier now and try to hide the fruit from the sun better in the vineyard. Our wines are able to have better acidity now.

“Younger vines have a lot of energy. The quality though isn’t always what we want.

Like a person that ages, the older vines learn how to do more with less energy, and they produce better fruit.”

Driven to make a chardonnay where the fruit flavors shine, 75 percent is fermented in stainless steel for nine months. Twenty-five percent spends time in new French and American oak barrels, but Pi shuts down any secondary malolactic fermentation as it begins.

In doing so, the Trapiche Broquel, Chardonnay, 2012 ($18), is crisp yet has a fuller mouth feel. The Asian pear flavor is unmistakable.

“The movement to show what the fruit can do in Argentina is underway,” Pi said.

“The grapes are from high altitude and have very fresh flavors. We are showing off the fruit here, not the oak.”

No fooling, Sellers’ choice of attire helped illustrate his role with the team: A breaststroke specialist who’s also particular about eliciting belly laughs.

Asked to describe the design of the white sport coat with navy blue rectangles he obtained at his favorite outfitter, the Goodwill store in the nearby Foxfield Commons Shopping Center, Sellers responded simply.

“Cool,” he said.

The 10th-place finish helped East take fifth as a team in its final tune-up before the Saints host an IHSA sectional Feb. 21.

East coach Joe Cabel called Sellers’ effort a “breakout,” and apparently was so impressed that he sought a piece of the action.

“He’s Mr. Creative,” Cabel said. “I offered him $200 for the sport coat that he wore to the conference meet, and he said he only paid two bucks for it.”

Sellers embraced the quirkiness that can be a teenager’s

Sellers’ father has since started his own business, but a nomadic childhood that included moves from Red Wing, Minnesota, to Evansville, Indiana, and back to Minnesota taught Sellers at least one thing.

Swimming didn’t have to be his only constant.

“Just the people I’ve met and the times I’ve had,” Sellers said. “I’m not the best swimmer there is, obviously, so I don’t do it to win a state meet or anything like that. But I do it for the times that I get with my friends, you know, the experiences I have with them.”

In recent winters, that network certainly has extended to his coaches. At the end of last season, Sellers presented them with his latest Goodwill find: A recording of the Korean Children Choir’s Christmas album.

Folically-challenged assistant Kent Pearson once received a hair extension brace.

Sophomore Nick Boryk, a close friend on the team, recalls scores of other Sellers purchases that have made him grin, if not scratch his head.

“Usually, I don’t get anything,” Boryk said. “It’s just fun to see what he has.”

Boryk and Sellers also are avid moviegoers. Although a recent selection, “American Sniper,” offered a more sobering take, it certainly didn’t keep the group from letting its hair extensions down.

“It’s fun. When we both are at the wall, we’ll crack a joke.

Try to get each other to laugh,” Boryk said. “Make sure it’s not all torture.”

With tapering – long the late-season swimming buzzword – on the horizon, workouts will soon grow shorter in yardage and duration.

rusty. But despite being unable to easily communicate, the barrier was blasted away thanks to the reason she was there: Soccer.

“It was very hard in the beginning because none of the girls really spoke English,” said Lulek, a social work major. “The older girls were good with using actions and picking up on little words.

But other than that, the only way we could really interact with the kids was to play soccer with them. If you grabbed a ball, you might not know their name and might not be able to say, ‘Let’s go play.’

You just grabbed a ball, pointed at it and you went off and you were playing and having a good time.

“I wish my Spanish had come back so I could get to know the girls a little more, but even with the language barrier, they wanted to be around you. They wanted to walk with you, hold your hand, give you hugs. The language barrier was there, but it was almost hidden in a sense.

“It was almost like soccer was an international language down there. Just because we both understood soccer and we both had that bond. Just because we didn’t speak the same language, it didn’t matter because we played soccer together.”

And soon, Lulek realized just how much of a difference she and her fellow Soccer Without Borders comrades were making for the local kids.

“You can definitely see how much you inspire them and how much you encourage them for them to stay in school and to keep up with soccer and with studies,” Lulek said. “As a team of Soccer Without Borders volunteers, we played against the Nicaraguan national team, and the girls from the camp were

able to come out and see that game. And they cheered for us, as Soccer Without Borders, rather than their national team, which was really cool because if I saw my national team I would be so excited.

“But they were working with us all week and they knew us. And to see us in our element and to kind of see what they’re working for I think was really cool for them and a really awesome experience for us, as well.”

The phrase “life-changing experience” is thrown around an awful lot. But when Amanda Lulek uses it, she means it.

Lulek, a Geneva grad playing soccer at the University of Iowa, recently partook in what could go down as the highlight of her soccer career, something that didn’t come in a Big Ten game with the word “Iowa” plastered across her chest.

Instead, it came more than 3,000 miles away with a group of people who spoke a completely different language.

Lulek, along with one of her fellow Hawkeyes, worked a camp for the organization Soccer Without Borders in Nicaragua, teaching young girls in the Central American country the fundamentals of the game and the fundamentals of teamwork and getting to know one another.

“It really opens your eyes,” Lulek said. “I’m so much more appreciative of the opportunities and the things I have, the chance that I have to play at a [Division I], Big Ten school, to play soccer and get my shoes and get clothes and trips and everything. I’m just so much more appreciative of it. These girls are lucky if they get a pair of cleats, that they have enough donations in their size to get cleats. They’re lucky if they get school supplies. They have so many more barriers, but you can’t even tell sometimes, they’re still so happy.

And just to think of them and think of how they live their life compared to how I live my life, it’s definitely made me re-think some things.”

Lulek said the camp was for girls of varying ages, from elementary school age all the way up to high school, and that mornings focused on soccer skills were followed by afternoons of relationship-building.

Those relationships are something Lulek won’t soon forget, despite her initial trouble with the language barrier. She studied Spanish for four years at Geneva, but she admitted she was a bit

The Eagles jumped to a 41-5 halftime lead in the opener.

“We started kind of slow and I think we had some jitters with the first game of the state tournament,” Wilkie said. “But a really good team effort. We pushed the ball and ran.”

Kaneland can credit its winning record to its successful, late-game execution.

After a poor start to the season, the Knights (11-10) hopped back over .500 on Tuesday with a 53-51 win against Ottawa as the Knights scored the final four points in the last minute to upend the Pirates.

Earlier conference wins against Sycamore (rallied from 20 down to win by three) and DeKalb (one-point win) also showcased the Knights’ poise under pressure.

Kaneland coach Brian Johnson thinks winning close games can become a habit.

“We’ve pulled them out, and it’s nice to have them so they have that experience and they know they’ve been there before,” Johnson said.

Senior guard Connor Fedderly put the finishing touches on Tuesday’s win, drawing a foul with less than 1 second to play and making both free throws to put the Knights ahead.

“I just think we’re a really close team,” Fedderly said.

“We really come together a lot. Everyone’s like best friends on our team so we’re all in sync and we know what we need to do. We want to win for each other. I think just our team coming together is a really big part of the end of the game.”

loses title over false map

By JON SEIDEL and SETH GRUEN Chicago Sun-Times When troubling allegations first surfaced last year that the Jackie Robinson West All-Stars baseball team cheated its way to a national championship, Little League International officials investigated from afar.

They made phone calls. They looked at a boundary map dated May 1 to make sure members of the team that stole Chicago’s heart met residency requirements making them eligible to play. Everything looked in order. But the whispers wouldn’t go away. So Little League President and CEO Stephen Keener and his organization decided to visit Chicago. And in a series of face-to-face meetings Jan. 31, new information surfaced that led to the league’s announcement Wednesday that it was stripping Jackie Robinson West of its national championship.

Little League officials learned Illinois District 4 Administrator Michael Kelly didn’t follow proper procedure when Jackie Robinson West’s boundary map was redrawn and approved, Keener said.

The new map allegedly stole territory from three neighboring leagues – the Roseland, Rosemoor and South Side little

leagues.

That map was sent to Little League this fall to rebut allegations of cheating, Keener said. But officials learned Kelly backdated it to make it “legitimate for the 2014 season.”

And finally, after allegations against the South Side baseball team began to “gather some steam,” Jackie Robinson West officials allegedly asked the Roseland, Rosemoor and South Side leagues to cede the territory. All three refused, Keener said.

Rosemoor Little League Chairman Ralph Peterson denied that any Jackie Robinson West official approached him to falsify a league boundary map.

He said he’s “very in the loop” and would have known if it happened.

Still, Kelly has been removed from his position. Jackie Robinson West manager Darold Butler has been suspended from Little League activity.

Jackie Robinson West will have its tournament privileges suspended until it appoints replacements for JRW President Anne Haley and Treasurer Bill Haley. Keener said a veteran district administrator will be brought in to take over Illinois District 4 to either clean it up – or dissolve it.

Last season, Sellers narrowly missed qualifying in the breaststroke but competed at state as part of East’s 200 medley relay. Junior John Tarpey and 2014 East graduates Will Shanel and Tyler VanGyseghem combined with Sellers to finish 27th in preliminaries, falling short of the top-12 cut.

It’s not yet time for Sellers to reflect on his career, but he realizes his most recent family move arguably has been the most fruitful for him person-

ally.

“It’s definitely been more competitive,” Sellers said. “I swim for a great school. I’m blessed to do that. I’ve had a lot of great coaches that have really worked me hard, so that brought me to where I am.”

Competing after high school remains “up in the air,” Sellers said. He would like to attend college in his native Minnesota and study graphic design.

Whether the next few weeks mark the end for Sellers or not, Cabel lauds Sellers’ work ethic above all else. That growing mantel of novelty gifts notwithstanding.

“Swimming’s tough. It’s not until you retire that it becomes fun,” Cabel said. “When you’re doing it, it’s just hard work.

And so, yeah, you’ve got to have some fun outside of the water. They do.”

Best prevention for kidney stones is to drink lots of water Dear Doctor K: I recently had a very painful kidney stone. What can I do to prevent another?

Dear Reader: First of all, my sympathies: Pain from passing a kidney stone can be as bad as any kind of pain.

Kidney stones are hard, chemical deposits that form inside the kidney chambers where urine is collected. Urine passes from the kidney down a narrow tube (the ureter) and into the bladder. If a stone gets carried into the narrow ureter, it can get stuck. This can cause severe pain, bloody urine, nausea and vomiting.

If you’ve had one kidney stone, you’re at increased risk for another. That’s because you probably have a tendency (based on your genes, your diet or both) to form kidney stones.

New guidelines say the best way to prevent a second kidney stone is to drink lots of water every day. Keeping your urine diluted makes it harder for stones to form.

The guidelines are based on clinical trials of treatments and diet changes that doctors commonly recommend to help prevent second kidney stones. The researchers found enough evidence to say that drinking lots of fluids reduces the risk of a second kidney stone.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff They did not find enough evidence to recommend other treatments or diet changes – but that’s not the same as finding evidence that other treatments don’t work.

I still plan to recommend the following steps to help prevent even a first kidney stone. These are all healthy suggestions, whether or not they actually prevent kidney stones: • Drink enough water. If you have had a kidney stone, drink enough liquids to pass two quarts (8 cups) of urine a day. Include citrus drinks, such as lemonade and orange juice. The citrate in these beverages helps to stop stones from forming.

• Eat calcium-rich foods. Most kidney stones contain calcium, which usually hooks up with a chemical called oxalate. The calcium in foods and drinks binds to the oxalate inside the gut and passes out of the body in a bowel movement. As a result, less calcium goes out in the urine. This reduces the chance that stones will form.

• Decrease sodium (salt) in

your diet. A high-sodium diet can trigger kidney stones because it increases the amount of calcium in your urine. If you have had a kidney stone, limit daily sodium to 1,500 milligrams (mg).

• Limit animal protein. Eating too much animal protein increases the amount of uric acid in the urine. This can cause uric acid stones. It can also trigger formation of stones that contain calcium.

A high-protein diet also reduces levels of citrate, which helps prevent stones from forming.

• Limit stone-forming foods if you have had kidney stones. If you were able to collect the stone in your urine after it was passed, and your doctor examined it and said it was a calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate stone, limit oxalate- and phosphate-containing foods like beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea, most nuts and colas.

Fortunately, I’ve never suffered from a kidney stone. But if I had – based on what my patients have told me – I would do anything to avoid a second.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and live with my mother and my 11-year-old sister. My mom and dad divorced a long time ago and I haven’t seen my dad in more than four years.

He’s a doctor and pays child support on time every month. My mom is an attorney and she makes a very good salary.

She is very busy and has many clients, so my sister and I are expected to help her out at home. The two of us each have assigned chores and we must do them or lose privileges. I know this is fair and we do receive an allowance.

Communication in bridge is twofold. During the bidding, each player is trying to describe his hand to his partner. In the play, it is the ability to get from one hand to another.

How does South communicate to make three no-trump in today’s deal after West leads the spade queen and East signals enthusiastically with his seven? (Given that declarer is known not to have four spades, there is a strong case for East’s playing his king at trick one.)

Declarer has only six top tricks: one spade, one diamond and four clubs. If he plays on hearts, here he will lose four spades and one heart. Instead, South should try to gain four diamond tricks. This requires not only finding East with the diamond king, but also perhaps having to take that finesse three times. If so, what are the three dummy entries?

After winning the first or second spade trick, declarer should cash his club ace, then lead the club seven over to dummy’s queen. On the board for the first time, South takes a diamond finesse. Next, since the clubs broke 3-2, declarer must overtake his club jack with dummy’s king and repeat the diamond finesse.

Finally, he leads his carefully conserved club two to dummy’s four and takes the third diamond finesse to bring home the contract.

Color

Saltz recommends that couples make communication a priority with weekly check-ins during which they take each other’s temperature on their decisions,

Style

Style is perhaps the trickiest for couples to navigate because it is so personal. You can’t argue with someone if he or she thinks a sofa isn’t comfortable, but you can argue if that person doesn’t like a sofa because of its chunky leg and modern silhouette.

Presumably you and your partner have had some discussion of style before you embark on a decorating project, but, quite often, one’s taste changes and evolves during the process.

Saltz warns that “if you disagree, remember it is stuff, not people, you’re talking about, so don’t personalize having different tastes.”

There may come a time down the road when the monitor makes sense but starting off, you can live without this.

• Wipe warmer. There are so many questions about this device: Do you keep it on all the time, and if so, don’t the wipes burn? Or dry out? And how cold are wipes stored at room temperature, anyway? It’s more of a hassle than a convenience. Plus, do you really want your kid to get used to warmed-up wipes?

• Bassinet. It’s perfectly reasonable to use a bassinet in those early weeks, because it’s cozier than a crib and can keep your newborn nearby. But it’s not essential. A bassinet is a piece of furniture with a very short shelf life.

• Parenting books. Of course you want to absorb all there is to know about being a good parent.

In reality, you’ll learn the most in the early days from grandparents, fellow new parents and, of course, the baby.

Note to new parents: You don’t really need all that stuff.

As you get ready for your first baby, you are going to see some very long checklists of supposed essentials. You should know that most of these things are optional. Which is especially lucky for you who live in smaller spaces.

Here’s a list of some of the things you can live without.

• Changing table. If you have a regular table or a bureau or anything with a flat surface, then you have your changing table. Done. Investing in an actual changing table is unnecessary not only because it’s really just a glorified tabletop, but also because you’re not going to be anywhere near the changing table half the times that the baby needs to be changed. You will change the baby in every room of your home, on the couch, on the floor, in your car, in restaurants, on airplanes. And you’ll manage without a changing table.

• Diaper bag. No one ever said that baby gear had to be carried around in ugly vinyl bags with an abundance of compartments. You’ll need to carry some sort of bag large enough to hold diapers and wipes and maybe bottles, but any

investing in something that promises to contain the odor of days-old human waste? Just take your garbage out. It’s so much easier than buying special bags and a bulky plastic container for those bags.

• Diaper stacker. Millions of parents have gotten their children through years of diapers and toilet training without even being aware that there exists a piece of storage equipment designed specifically for diapers. Keep it that way.

You can figure out how to store your diapers without it. (Drawers, shelves, baskets and the aforementioned tote bag, for instance.)
