Proposal pulled for Thomle building

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia business owner Michael Grudecki said he is pulling his proposal to turn the city-owned Thomle building in downtown Batavia into a martini lounge because he is tired of the city dragging out the process.

“They have taken two years of my time,” Grudecki said Tuesday. “I don’t have time for this anymore. I don’t want to do business with the city anymore.”

Grudecki, president of Vignette Home Decor in Batavia, said he first approached city officials in February

2012 with the idea for his proposed Tini Lounge.

In November 2013, he voiced frustration that he originally made his proposal to aldermen in May and they have to yet to vote on the proposal.

“I’m a savvy business person who knows Michael when enough Grudecki is enough,” Grudecki said.

“The city at this point has blown their chance for a concept that quite honestly was meant to be.”

The city has been exploring whether to sell the build-

ing at 2 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia. Since 1997, the city has owned the building, which was built in 1876.

Grudecki said the city has shown more interest in another proposal for the building than his proposal.

St. Charles-based Corcoran Commercial Real Estate in December presented aldermen with its proposal to acquire the Thomle building and combine it with the 4-6 E. Wilson St. building to develop restaurant space on the first floor and five apartments on the upper levels.

Plans include for the restaurant to have a 1,500-square-foot deck that would overlook the Fox Riv-

er along with three apartments on the second floor and two apartments on the third floor.

Corcoran is seeking financial assistance from the city, but the amount of assistance has not yet been disclosed.

One of the options Grudecki had discussed for acquiring the building was for the city to give him a loan, with 20 percent of the loan being forgiven for each year the building is owned.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said the city has to take a hard look at any proposal involving public financing.

“There has to be a credible and plausible return coming to the city,” he said.

Fermilab experiment sees first long-distance neutrinos KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Fermilab officials working on the world’s longest-distance neutrino experiment announced Tuesday that they have seen their first neutrinos.

The NOvA experiment consists of two huge particle detectors placed 500 miles apart, and its job is to explore the properties of an intense beam of ghostly particles called neutrinos. Neutrinos are abundant in nature, but they very rarely interact with other matter.

“NOvA represents a new generation of neutrino ex-

periments,” Fermilab Director Nigel Lockyer said in a news release. “We are proud to reach this important milestone on our way to learning more about these fundamental particles.”

Scientists generate a beam of the particles for the NOvA experiment using one of the world’s largest accelerators located at Fermilab. They aim this beam in the direction of the two particle detectors, one near the source at Fermilab and the other in Ash River, Minn., near the Canadian border.

The detector in Ash River is operated by the University of Minnesota under a cooperative agreement with the Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

“The first neutrinos mean we’re on our way,” said Harvard physicist Gary Feldman, who has been a co-leader of the experiment from the beginning. “We started meeting more than 10 years ago to discuss how to design this experiment, so we are eager to get underway.”

The NOvA experiment is scheduled to run for six years.

Where did you grow up? Rapid City, S.D. Do you have any pets? A pet cat, Oreo.

We have had Oreo for about nine years.

Who would play you in the movie of life? Jim Carrey What was your first job in the coffee business? It was a mobile coffee shop. I was a teacher for 40 years. About eight years ago, I knew I needed to do something when I retire. My wife and I started a mobile coffee business. We got ourselves a concession trailer, a 1983 ambulance that says “Java Plus” on it, and we set out going to different venues – from the Corn Boil in Sugar Grove to the flea market in St. Charles.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Professional baseball player and a pastor. I became a teacher. I went to a Lutheran college in Nebraska, and I had training for both pastor and teacher. I’ve always looked up to pastors, and you always needed to be holy. But I became a teacher.

Did you ever think of becoming a pastor? All the time. This store allows me that

ability. It’s an awesome place. As a coffee shop owner, you are kind of like a bartender.

You ask people how they are, and they’ll tell you.

Is there a book you would recommend?

Anything by Max Lucado. I think I have all of his books, and they all really hit home.

What is the best part of the job? I have developed some awesome relationships with people. They get to know you. And I think it’s because of my teaching background, the kids come in and want to see Mr. Mike. I love that.

What is your favorite thing on the menu? The 20-degree-below-zero frozen hot chocolate. It probably still is the No. 1 seller, even on ice cold days. I’ll sell seven or eight of those. It tastes like hot chocolate, but it’s cold and blended. It’s kind of our signature drink.

What is an interesting factoid about yourself? I spent some time in Russia in 1994. I did some mission work. At that particular time, if you went over to Russia, you weren’t necessarily assured that you would ever get out. It’s probably a little bit better right now, but I think that probably there is 2 percent of the country’s wealth for a small group of people, and 98 percent are still pretty poor.

Aldermen recommend OK of Walgreens agreement

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The construction of a new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia took another step forward Tuesday as aldermen in a 9-3 vote recommended approval of a redevelopment agreement for the project.

Voting “no” at the Joint Committee of the Whole meeting were 1st Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien, 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac and 6th Ward Alderman Lisa Clark. The full City Council is set to vote on the agreement Monday.

O’Brien had asked for the vote to be delayed.

“The details keep dribbling in,” O’Brien said. “Let’s not rush into it. It’s taxpayers money that we are spending here.”

Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey was happy that the project is moving forward. Batavia Enterprises is the developer for the project.

“This is going to add significant benefit to Batavia,” Dempsey said after the vote.

The project is in a tax increment financing district.

Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive

$450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF increment to cover it, Dempsey said.

The new store could open in early 2015. In TIF districts, the total equalized assessed valuation (EAV) within a district at the time of creation is measured and frozen. Then revenues generated from the application of the local composite tax rate to the incremental growth in property tax revenues over the frozen baseline amount are used to pay for redevelopment costs.

Once a development project is completed and has been paid for, the TIF district is dissolved and the tax base is returned to full use by all eligible taxing bodies.

Total project costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated to reach about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of $520,250.

Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

In addition, a large storm drain line runs through the city-owned portion of the property.

The line acts as an overflow route from the southern tip of Depot Pond to a point in the Fox River just north of the city of Batavia’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency garage.

Dempsey said the line needs to be moved at a cost of $300,000.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

New Fox River project ramping up in St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A project aimed at using the Fox River for more recreation and economic growth gained the support of the St. Charles Park District on Tuesday.

The Park District Board at its regular meeting voted 5-0 in favor of joining a task force for the Active River Project.

Board President Karrsten Goettel and Commissioner Brian Charles were absent.

The Active River Project aims to utilize the Fox River as an economic and recreational engine to improve St. Charles, said John Rabchuk, treasurer of the St. Charles River Corridor Foundation.

The foundation developed the project in the past few years and now it is ready to share with the public.

Potential options for the Fox River include white water environments, interactive water playgrounds, floating gardens and more. Rabchuk presented information on all these options during Tuesday’s park district board meeting.

“We haven’t really utilized the river to its fullest extent,” Rabchuk said.

Park Board members like Bob Carne agreed.

reational sporting events and more tourist attractions along the river, Board Treasurer Carne said. Carne was glad to hear about the successes of other river initiatives such as WaterFire in Providence, R.I. WaterFire started as a public art installation and grew into a recurring event that draws thousands of people throughout the year.

The Park District Board

vote also included an agreement in concept that the district would provide some level of funding for the project once more specifics are known.

The foundation hopes to move quickly in the coming weeks so supporters can make their first attempt at getting financial support for the project, Rabchuk said. Applications for the Kane County Riverboat Fund Program, which

includes money that could apply to the project, are due by April 7, according to the county website.

With the Park District on board for the task force, the River Corridor Foundation will next look to add St. Charles city officials and the Forest Preserve District to the group.

The foundation wants to have the river’s major stake-

holders together to work on the project parameters and hopefully invite request for proposals for conceptual plans and cost estimates during the summer, Rabchuk said.

The foundation has shared its plan with St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina, some city staff and a few aldermen, but Rabchuk hopes to present to the full St. Charles City Council in the next few weeks.

North student’s song meant to let classmates know they’re not alone

ST. CHARLES – Seventeen-year-old Blakely Thomas knows that a lot of people her age feel alone.

But the St. Charles North High School junior wants to let them know they aren’t alone – that someone can always relate to their situation.

The teen is spreading that message through song.

On Monday, Thomas was one of several North students who participated in the HOPE Club’s presentation for Suicide Prevention Week, which is being recognized in every St. Charles School District 303 high school and middle school.

The HOPE Club raises awareness about the prevention of teen suicide and depression.

The district’s focus on suicide prevention stems from the 2009 Summit on Suicide Prevention, a communitywide event that was prompted by six student suicides in seven years.

During the summit, teachers heard something disturbing: students didn’t know who to turn to in times of stress, said Julie Pheney, one of three HOPE Club advisers at North.

So, Pheney said, this year’s focus is the students’ “trusted” – the people students can turn to in times of crisis as well as celebration.

She described Monday’s presentation as a schoolwide effort that included video of staff members talking about how they care for – and are there for – the students.

Knowing students often need help outside of school hours, presentation organizers also included footage from a suicide lifeline so teens will know what to expect if they ever need to call it, HOPE Club advisers said.

Accompanying herself on piano, Thomas performed an original song that went along the presentation’s “trusted” theme.

She noted that performing is relatively new to her. Her first performance was during the HOPE Club presentation last year, she said.

She didn’t expect the positive reaction she got from “Falling,” one of the first songs she wrote, she said. The song describes what it’s like to

go through a dark time feeling invisible and alone but ends with what it’s like to realize you don’t have to live under that haze, she said.

Students asked to buy the song, Thomas said, explaining that’s why it’s now available for 99 cents on iTunes.

The song she performed Monday, along with a spoken-word piece featuring her friend, also are available for purchase under the “Project Hope” album. Proceeds benefit TriCity Family Services.

AID seeks volunteers for telethon fundraiser

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The 15th annual Association for Individual Development Telethon is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

March 15 at Waubonsee Community College, 47 Waubonsee Drive, Sugar Grove.

AID is a nonprofit organization providing services to children and adults with developmental, physical and mental disabilities. Currently, it serves nearly 5,000 clients through 20 programs that include advocacy, housing, training, job placement, behavioral and crisis intervention, among other services.

The annual all-day telethon features stage acts and entertainers, as well as clients who talk about what AID has done for them. AID has served the area for 52 years.

AID spokeswoman Wendy Bialek said the organization still needs about 100 more volunteers to answer the phones as pledges come in during the telethon.

“We have 500 volunteers altogether – that includes the volunteer talent and the back stage crew,” Bialek said. “Our biggest need is always for the phones. We need 200 volunteers just for answering phones.”

A phone volunteer would answer phones for one hour, she said. Bialek said it also would be a big help if phone volunteers brought in their own phone lists of their personal contacts and friends they can call while on-air.

The fundraising goal for the telethon is $125,000, Bialek said.

“We usually get pretty close to that,” she said. “I’m always eternally optimistic.”

The 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act require potentially major sources of air emissions to obtain federally enforceable operating permits. A FESOP allows a source that is potentially major to take operational limits in the permit so that it is a non-major source. The permit will contain federally enforceable limitations that restrict the facility’s emissions to non-major levels. The permit will be enforceable by the USEPA, as well as the Illinois EPA.

• There was a discussion about class sizes, with officials examining the potential cost of bringing down the numbers at schools in the district.

• Board members heard of plans for middle school Spanish that would offer Spanish 1 in eighth grade, making it possible to ultimately complete a fifth year of Spanish in high school.

The board did take action on the athletic director position.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler indicated that interviewing for the position is underway.

And board members didn’t have issues with the job de-

scription for that position.

The assistant principal would lead planning for student activities and establish and build partnerships related to activities and student life.

That description marks a shift in responsibilities, but is not the addition of a position.

The activities component had been part of the function of the athletic director, and that would shift to the assistant principal for curriculum and instruction.

Witt read off the first item of the athletic director job

description, “keep the administration informed of the important accomplishments, needs and concerns in all areas of the operation of the total athletic program.”

She said there was “nothing nearly that strong” in the other job description. She also took issue with focus groups associated with the project, saying “it appears to me that there wasn’t anyone who wasn’t a sports person” in the groups because if there were, she said, there would have been a push to be sure activities were on the same level as sports.

SUGAR GROVE – Insisting other student endeavors should be considered at least as important as those

by Kaneland’s sports teams, school board member Teresa Witt took issue with job descriptions that would shift some activities away from Kaneland High School’s athletic director.

Witt said a new job description for Kaneland’s athletic director appeared to strike the proper tone.

Witt, however, said she was unimpressed by a job description written for a different position, high school assistant principal for curriculum and instruction.

The Kaneland School District 302 Board unanimous-

ly approved the new athletic director job description at Monday night’s meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School. But district officials will bring back new language for the other position at the next board meeting.

“Separate but equal doesn’t change the culture enough,” Witt said, adding that the language used to describe the assistant principal position “is not nearly as clear as the athletic director.”

The topic was one of many to come up at a school board meeting that lasted more than four hours. Among other topics: • Kane County Board member Melisa Taylor and state Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, sought support for improvements at Route 30 and

8OBITUARIES CLARENCE ‘BUD’ ABBOTT Born: July 16, 1925 Died: Feb. 7, 2014 SCHAUMBURG – Clarence “Bud” Abbott, 88, passed away peacefully in the early hour Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Friendship Village in Schaumburg. Bud was born in New Hampshire on July 16, 1925, and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. He served as part of the U.S. Occupational Forces in Post-World War II, where he met and married his wife, Dorothea (Thea) in 1948.

After his discharge from the Army, they moved back to the U.S., settled for a few years in the St. Louis area before settling down in St. Charles in the 1950s.

There, both Bud and his wife, Thea, worked at the St. Charles “Boy School” State Juvenile Correction Facility until their retirement in 1986. In St. Charles, Bud and his wife were active members of St. Patrick Catholic Church and later at St. John Neumann Catholic Church where Bud served many years as an usher. Bud also actively served as a Knight of Columbus with the Marquette 188th Assembly in Aurora. Bud for many years was, along with his wife, very active on the board of directors of the Fox Valley chapter of the German American National Congress (DANK). He was a founding member of the chapter and could be seen at many parades and festivals where he could not be missed in his favorite Lederhosen attire displaying his friendship with the German-American community.

During his retirement years, Bud and his wife, Thea, moved to the Friendship Village Retirement Community in Schaumburg where he made many new friends. Unfortunately he lost his wife to illness there in 2002. Bud was known to most as a kind and loving gentleman with a love of life, dancing and positive outlook with an injection of humor. Oktoberfest time was his favorite time of the year and many will always remember him in his Lederhosen.

The visitation will be at 10 a.m.

Saturday, Feb. 15, until the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at Countryside Funeral Home & Crematory, 950 South Bartlett Road (at Stearns Road), Bartlett. Following services, cremation will be at Countryside Crematory. Interment will be

FRED CREGIER Born: Sept. 20, 1927 Died: Feb. 10, 2014 GENEVA – Fred Cregier, 86, longtime resident of Geneva, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva surrounded by family.

He was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Geneva, the son of Fred and Julia (Marcheschi) Cregier.

Fred was a graduate of Geneva High School, where he enjoyed many sports, and enjoyed some success as a track athlete, running many mile and half-mile events. He attended night courses at Aurora College, earning a manufacturing certificate, and later attended an executive development program at the University of Pittsburgh. Fred worked for many years in the manufacturing industry, beginning at Dunbar Kapple Company in Geneva where his former high school math teacher asked Fred to work for him.

He learned manufacturing skills in various assignments, beginning in Industrial engineering, production control and purchasing. That was interrupted in 1951, when he entered military service for two years in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean War. On leaving the service, Fred rejoined Dunbar Kapple for a time, and soon after, joined Dukes Hydraulics Co. of Schiller Park where he became the works manager and eventually plant manager.

During his first marriage in 1957, he and his wife, Joyce, had four children: Roderick, Christienne, Jocelyn and Melissa. There were many fond memories in their early childhood: bedtime stories, bonfires and ghost stories in a wooded area at Halloween, catching butterflies and all sorts of nature’s items to take home to show Mom, going to work with Dad on Saturday mornings, going fishing and many others. Fred enjoyed serving snacks to his young family as they gathered around the TV on Sunday evenings to watch the Disney Show. All those memories soon passed into family lore.

Later, Dukes Hydraulics was

purchased by Victor Equipment Co. of San Francisco and became part of Victor’s Hydraulics Division.

Fred was plant manager of the Dukes facility. That Division was eventually acquired by International Harvester Co. and Fred was named President of the Hydraulics Division under the new management, overseeing three hydraulic manufacturing plants in Iowa, Minnesota and Franklin Park.

When Harvester began to fail in the early 1980s, Fred and several key members of the Illinois-based hydraulic valves operations, were successful in buying that division from Harvester, moving it to St. Charles and renaming that operation Dukes Fluid Power. His mentor in his Dunbar Kapple days was his good friend, Larry Dempsey, whose guidance and financial assistance enabled Fred and his team to obtain ownership of Dukes. Fred was president and part owner of that operation which was successful as a privately held group, terminating six years later in a sale to a Danish firm, the Danfoss Company. Fred continued to operate the division for Danfoss for three more years, retiring at age 65 in 1992.

In the late 1980s Fred re-met the former Jo Ann (James) Olesen, with whom he had worked during youth football, in which their kids were involved. They were married in 1995. Their wedding party consisted of all their grown children. Due to Fred’s love of the Fox River they then built their present home along the shore of the Fox River in Geneva at the site of his mother and father’s home and grandparents’ home, which was a three-generation location for Fred. As Fred’s son, Rod, once said, “A river runs through it”... meaning the river has had so many meanings and memories for Fred and his children over the years. His main goals in life were to do his best in his occupation and most especially to show his great love to his children, grandchildren and his wife, as well as his extended family. Fred enjoyed golfing, boating and fishing, often with his children, during both his working years and after.

Upon his retirement, Jo Ann and he were able to do a lot of traveling, mainly in Europe, enjoying many great times and experiences. Fred also volunteered time and effort for various local charities, including Big Brothers, Lazarus House, Hesed House and more recently, Feed My Starving Children.

He is survived by his wife,

Jo Ann; four children, Col. Rod (Cindy) stationed in California, Dr. Christienne (Paul) Grunenwald, of Wheaton, Jocelyn (Bill) Nettelhorst of Barrington and Melissa (Shrish) Rane of Madeira, Ohio. Fred also has 12 wonderful grandchildren, Nathan, Stephanie, Rachel and Garrett Cregier, Katie, Maggie, Jack and Sarah Grunenwald, Calvin and Griffin Nettelhorst and Sofia and Anica Rane. Fred also has become a part of Jo Ann’s family, in his relationship with her three sons, Mike, Mark and Matt, plus their spouses and their own children who also are like grandchildren to him, namely Madison, Max and Brittni.

Fred and Jo Ann have long shared an interest in being active politically and volunteered in several campaigns, both local and federal, partly inspired by an interesting family background – his grandfather, DeWitt C. Cregier, was mayor of Chicago from 1889-1891.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Q. Cregier Sr. and Julia (Marcheschi) Cregier; and brother, Robert. He is survived by his two sisters, Gloria (Tom) Emma and Angela (John) Cygan; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral prayers will be at 11 a.m.

Friday, Feb. 14, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. ( Route 38), Geneva, proceeding to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 East Main St., St. Charles, for celebration of funeral Mass at noon, with Father David Peck as celebrant.

Burial will follow in West Side Cemetery, Geneva.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Malone Funeral Home with a rosary at 7:45 p.m.

ST. CHARLES – J. Todd Pomplin, 48, of St. Charles, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at his home.

He was born May 29, 1965, in Indianapolis, to John and Jodell Pomplin.

For 20 years, he was a sailing instructor and bar manager on Sanibel Island, Fla. Mr. Pomplin is survived by a daughter, Lakyn of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; a son, Bradley; two brothers, Jon of Geneva and Jeffrey Pomplin of Cincinnati; two nieces, Amanda and Ashley; and a great-nephew, Aiden.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be at noon Sunday, Feb. 16, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., (Corner of Routes 64 and 25), St. Charles. Interment will be private.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

EMMA A. SULLIVANO Born: May 13, 1917 Died: Feb. 7, 2014 BLOOMINGDALE – Emma A. Sullivano, 96, a resident of Bloomingdale and formerly of St. Charles, Glen Ellyn, Calumet Park and Chicago (Roseland), passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Alden Valley Ridge Healthcare in Bloomingdale.

Emma was born May 13, 1917, in Chicago, to Maria and Damaso Cimarolli. She graduated from St. Louis Academy High School in 1935.

On Oct. 24, 1940, she married Fredrick A. Sullivano. Their marriage was blessed with one child, a son, Fred Alan Sullivano.

Emma worked both within and outside of her home. Aside from caring for her family she was employed by the Home Store and St. Peter’s Church. She retired in 1983. Emma had many friends over her lifetime. Whether family or friend, she took great joy in making everyone she knew happy.

She is survived by her son, Fred (Marilyn); her granddaughter, Lynette (David) Nieman; her

grandson, Brian (Sarah) Sullivano; six great-grandchildren, Abigail, Audrey, Joshua, Nathaniel, Nolan and Thomas; and members of her extended family, the Mennericks and Jancauskases.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Martin, Rose and Lucy; and her daughter-in-law, Carol A. Sullivano.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main St. (Route 64), St. Charles. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, Alsip. Hultgren announces STEM competition U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, has announced the start of the first Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, the “House Student App Challenge,” also known as the “House App Contest,” for high school students from the 14th District.

The competition is designed to encourage their participation in STEM education fields, allowing students to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

The Kane County Board on Tuesday approved a resolution permitting Chairman Chris Lauzen to sign a memorandum of understanding with AFSCME Council 31

regarding the agreement reached for unionized employees in the health department, the clerk’s office and the department of employment and education.

The agreement for the employment and education employees includes a 2 percent wage increase retroactive to July 1, 2013; a 2 percent increase effective July 1, 2014; and 2.5 percent increases ef-

fective July 1, 2015, and July 1, 2016.

Clerk and health department employees will receive the same increases, but their effective date is Dec. 1 for each year.

The agreement also calls for the global employee portion of the health insurance premiums to increase from 15 percent to 17 percent beginning April 1.

Tuesday, the board approved a budgetary housekeeping item related to the positions, which include public relations and social media aspects.

Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, said the concept is “very good,”

but it needs to be fleshed out before the money is spent. Additionally, parameters need to be established to measure progress, Davoust said, adding that getting 1,000 “likes” on Facebook isn’t enough.

The original coordinators, Cheryl Maraffio and Nick Scanlan, were hired last June on a contract basis and were involved in Kane County Connected, a social media effort that aims to build communities within the county.

Scanlan’s contract wasn’t renewed, and Maraffio resigned last month, Lauzen has said.

After Tuesday’s meeting,

Lauzen said Jody Contorno and another candidate have been selected to fill those roles.

Lauzen declined to name the other candidate because the contract wasn’t finalized.

He said Contorno will work with the Junior Kane County Board, which is expected to have its first workshop from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 27. Interested participants should call 630-232-5931.

Each coordinator will earn about $60,000 on a contractual basis, Lauzen said.

The contract will run up to a year.

This month, the district is conducting its first parent satisfaction survey. Kaneland School Superintendent Jeff Schuler said the survey is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to strengthen communication between the district and the community.

The survey was designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of the district in the areas of teaching and learning, school climate, communication, technology and overall fulfillment of the district’s mission to graduate all students college, career and community ready.

Some of the questions on the survey ask parents whether their children are getting the appropriate amount of homework and how well the teaching style of their children’s teachers match their learning style.

Other questions ask how well administrators at their child’s school create a school environment that helps children learn and how well the activities offered at their child’s school match his or her interests.

“We got a lot of responses immediately,” he said.

Aldermen looking at electric rate increase

Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm has told aldermen that additional revenues would be needed to account for increased purchase power costs and the depletion of rate stabilization reserves.

In 2007, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a longterm power contract to pur-

tax, then a 16 percent electric tax increase would be needed, city staff said.

In addition, staff has recommended an increase to the base rates for all customer classes.

The planned increase for residential is $4 a month.

Aldermen are set to first discuss the issue at their Feb. 18 Joint Committee of the Whole meeting.

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis in August 2012 issued a report criticizing the Prairie State Energy Campus with charging more for power than promised.

If OK’d residents could see 10 percent hike chase electricity from the Prairie State Energy Campus in downstate Illinois.

City officials said there were higher than anticipated costs related to the construction of the plant.

In addition, the city has looked at selling off some of its power because it doesn’t need as much as expected because of the economic slowdown.

At the same time, the city’s overall costs for power are up. Holm said for the period from 2010 to 2013, pur-

chase power costs have increased a total of $7 million, or about 30 percent.

Residents would see a 10 percent rate increase in their electric bills if aldermen approve an additional half-percent home rule sales tax that could be allocated each year towards rate relief.

The one-half penny of each $1 in sales could provide up to $1.5 million in additional funds, officials said.

Stop the politics and adopt the Common Core

By JACK MARKELL and SONNY PERDUE Bloomberg News This is a pivotal moment for the Common Core State Standards.

Although 45 states quickly adopted the higher standards created by governors and state education officials, the effort has begun to lose momentum. Some are now wavering in the face of misinformation campaigns from people who misrepresent the initiative as a federal program and from those who support the status quo. Legislation has been introduced in at least 12 states to prohibit implementation and states have dropped out of the two major Common Core assessment consortia. Opposition

voices are growing louder as new assessments show students aren’t performing as well as they had on easier state tests offered previously.

The debate about the standards must be changed to ensure politics and mythology don’t derail a vital effort to improve opportunities for our kids as they are falling further behind their international peers.

Too often, supporters of raising expectations for our students are refuting broad claims that have nothing do with why we brought together teachers, education experts and employers to develop the Common Core initiative.

Instead, we must emphasize the real impact of this initiative in our classrooms.

Contrary to claims by opponents who say we’re taking away local control of curriculum, how educators teach the standards is entirely up to them. We have clear illustrations of teachers and administrators across the country developing innovative ways to help their students meet the new benchmarks.

All of these efforts represent precisely what we hoped Common Core would encourage when we worked with our colleagues at the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers to create the program. They are the reason that unlikely coalitions of Democrats and Republicans, as well as business leaders and union presidents, are urging states to resist

political pressures and stay focused on implementing the standards.

According to Gallup’s World Poll, there are 3 billion people looking for work and only 1.2 billion potential jobs available. The jobs will go where the skilled workforce is, and we are in danger of falling behind if we don’t raise the bar for our students.

In the coming months, elected officials and the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Governors’ Council will team up to publicize the facts about Common Core and challenge misinformation about what the standards mean.

We will help fill the leadership vacuum that has existed among even Common Core’s strongest proponents by providing states with ma-

terials to inform the public and assistance in applying best practices. We will share models of how states can successfully teach the standards – such as ways to bring together the best teachers across districts to share strategies, curriculum and lesson plans.

If we put the focus on the great work being done to implement Common Core in classrooms nationwide, instead of debating abstract political rhetoric, we will give our students the opportunities they deserve.

To the Editor: I want everyone to know about some of the excellent officers of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Feb. 5 was not a day to be out and about.

The roads were terrible. But these officers eased my mind by doing a wellness check for a family member on Empire Road this afternoon – the officers were deputy Shawn Barrows, deputy Dave Thorgesen and Sgt. Chris Peeler.

Their calming manner, professionalism, calls to check on how I was as I drove out from DeKalb and offering to go inside the house for me were very much appreciated. I was sure the outcome was not going to be good, yet it all turned out to be fine. I sang all the way home to DeKalb.

You are the greatest. Next time I’m in St. Charles, I’ll look you up, and my husband and I owe you a big steak dinner.

WHEATON – Geneva girls gymnasts crouched to their knees Tuesday night as the public address announcer read the team results of the Wheaton Warrenville South Sectional.

Apart from the floor exercise, it was about the only time anything other than the Vikings’ feet hit the floor.

Geneva won the program’s first sectional with a 146.525 and advanced to the Feb. 21 through 22 state meet at Palatine for the second consecutive season behind another sound and consistent effort that has become the norm.

“We pretty much hit everything,” Geneva senior Dominique Brognia said.

“We had no falls, so I mean, that was great for us. That’s what we wanted to do. We pretty much focus on sticking our landings, because that pretty much will come down to it at the end. It was great. We’re all so happy for it.”

Vikings freshman Claire Ginsberg captured the allaround title with a 37.9, edging Brognia (36.8).

Rachel Dugan of the St. Charles co-op (36.55) took the fifth and final state qualifying spot.

St. Charles finished second in the team race with a 143.15 and now needs help for a possible state berth.

The co-op’s fate rests in the results of the state’s two remaining sectionals, tonight at Hinsdale Central and Thursday at Niles North.

Competing in the cozy comfort of their Mack Olson gym in mid-January, the Vikings defeated St. Charles, 146.2 to 142.5, in a UEC dual.

At the time, the score represented a season-best for Geneva, five-hundredths of a point better than their previous 2013-14 standard set a few days before at the Lin-

coln-Way East Invitational.

Adding skills gradually while maintaining their confidence, the Vikings kept their eyes fixed forward, waited for their cue and continued to build. There was hardly any panic when St. Charles took a slight lead at the end of two rotations Tuesday, as the Vikings had the floor and vault on deck.

“We knew we had our two strongest events coming up,” Claire Ginsberg said, “so I think we knew that we could pull through.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North boys basketball team needed its 1-2 punch to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit and beat Elgin, 49-46, on Tuesday in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

Alec Goetz, uniform No. 1 and Jake Ludwig, No. 2, combined for 28 second-half points to spark the comeback.

North’s defense also improved in the final two quarters. The Maroons attempted one free throw in the third quarter and scored their first basket of the second half two minutes into the fourth quarter.

In the first half, the North Stars (14-7, 8-3 UEC River) couldn’t solve Elgin’s zone defense. As a result, North

was unable to score inside and committed 13 turnovers.

“I don’t believe it was anything I said at halftime,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “They just decided to compete in the second half defensively. [In the first half] we were just going through the motions defensively and allowed Elgin to score and get open looks. They scored, which allowed them to set up their zone.”

North took a brief lead, 3-2, early in the first quarter on Goetz’s first three points of the night. The senior guard scored a game-high 27 points.

A Ryan Sitter layup returned the lead to the Maroons, who led, 17-10, at the end of the first quarter.

Elgin (7-15, 3-7 UEC River) limited the North Stars to two baskets in the second quarter and held a 30-15 lead at half-

time.

In the third quarter, a re-energized North went on a 17-1 run to retake the lead.

Goetz scored 13 points and the North Stars forced 11 turnovers in the period.

Goetz scored the go-ahead layup on a steal at the end of the quarter, giving his team a 32-31 lead to start the fourth quarter “In the second half, we started punching gaps,” Poulin said. “We started playing inside-out which helped, and then the biggest difference was we got really active and picked up the intensity on defense, which led to offense. Alec was the benefactor of everyone picking it up defensively.”

“We came out so flat in the first half,” said Goetz. “We realized at halftime that it’s senior year and we don’t get

many more chances. We came out collectively in the second half and played harder.”

Elgin tied the game, 35-all at the 5:12 mark of the fourth quarter on a Kiko Mari basket.

On the North Stars’ next possession, Goetz was fouled attempting a 3-point shot.

The senior guard connected on all three free throws to put North back on top, 38-35.

Elgin pulled within a point, 47-46 on a Donte Harper layup with less than a minute left to play.

Two free throws by Ludwig (12 points) with 17 seconds left to play widened North’s lead to 49-46.

With no timeouts left, Elgin could not stop the clock to set up a play and was unable to get off a tying shot.

Desmond Sanders scored a team-high 14 points for Elgin.

Over the weekend, Lill stressed the importance of keeping an even keel, telling gymnasts they only could focus on themselves – there was no controlling Geneva.

St. Charles finished with the beam, and Lill said she counted 2.5 points the team left on the apparatus as slight mistakes fell “like a domino.”

Individually, 12 athletes from each event and the allaround who did not advance from sectionals will be atlarge qualifiers.

Vaca was Kaneland’s third-leading scorer behind seniors John Pruett and Ty Carlson.

Another Knight moving on: Cole Carlson is one of numerous Kaneland basketball players who also played football, and now he’s also among numerous Kaneland football seniors who will play in college.

The ball-hawking linebacker announced this week that he’ll play collegiately at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, a Division III program.

Pruett, Kaneland fend off W. Chicago

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com WEST CHICAGO – A couple of boys basketball teams with similar records and a couple of similar players played, well, similarly Tuesday night.

In the end, Kaneland did just enough to differentiate itself from West Chicago to come away with a 71-65 victory.

The similar players are a pair of seniors – West Chicago’s John Konchar and Kaneland’s John Pruett. Both are listed as guard/forwards.

They even wear the same jersey number (5).

The 6-3 Pruett had the task of guarding the 6-4 Konchar most of the night.

“He’s a great player, just all-around,” Pruett said. “He can do everything – shoot, rebound, pass. I knew it was going to be tough. I just played my best ‘D’ and hoped he missed some shots along the way.”

Konchar finished with a double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Pruett matches those stats with his own impressive numbers, leading all scorers with 28 points and secured seven rebounds.

“Konchar’s one of the best players I’ve seen,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said.

“I think he’d be the best player on a lot of programs in our area. … It was a team win. John played excellent. I think he continues to show why’s one of the better players in the area.”

There were seven lead changes in the first half, which finished with West Chicago up, 30-29. Konchar and Pruett both got out of the gate slowly.

Mitch Henke, who wound up with 15 points, scored the first nine of the game for the Wildcats. Konchar finally got rolling by hitting a short bank shot late in the first quarter.

It’s only the first year of Kaneland’s “Day and Knight of Hoops” shootout, but Knights boys basketball coach Brian Johnson is setting the bar high.

Not only has Johnson helped organize an impressive tripleheader of varsity games, but also a full slate of bells and whistles to accompany them.

Among them: exhibition games by Kaneland’s youth basketball programs, participation by Kaneland’s high school and youth cheer squads, customizable event clothing, a 50-50 raffle and a draw-down raffle with a $2,000 grand prize.

The shootout will benefit the Wounded Warrior project, which helps wounded veterans and their families as they return home. Johnson said that idea came from one of the event’s volunteers, and “it just seemed that it made sense.”

“I think the big thing for us is we decided to donate all the proceeds to the Wounded Warrior project and give a little meaning behind what the shootout is going to be for. People are pretty excited about that,” Johnson said. “I received a lot of emails from people wanting to donate money or get sponsorships or do draw-down tickets just because of what we’re donating the money to. Once that started happening, you got a good feel for it.”

For the area’s basketball-lovers, the lineup of participating teams is incentive on its own to make the trip to Maple Park.

The night’s middle game – Larkin against North Chicago – will be one of the state’s top games Saturday, Johnson said, while the first (St. Charles North-Peoria Richwoods) and last (Kaneland-Hillcrest) games pit local teams against quality, out-of-area competition.

“I feel lucky to have gotten Hillcrest to come out,” Johnson said. “[Hillcrest coach Don Houston] is a great guy. Him being willing to play us for the final game, I thought that was important to have a program like Hillcrest come out and play.

Inside stuff on Rockets’ minds Burlington Central thumped Marengo, 57-28, on Monday for its 24th straight win in Big Northern Conference East play.

A win at Harvard in tonight’s regular-season finale would give Central its second straight unblemished run to the conference title.

While the victories have been commonplace – each of BC’s four losses have come to Class 4A teams – there still is some novelty to the way the Rockets are rolling. Instead of relying heavily on ball pressure and clogging passing lanes the way last year’s 3A supersectional qualifier did, Central has placed added emphasis on packing the post and staying in position down low.

“A really strong, no one scores in the paint kind of defense,” sophomore forward Sam Pryor said.

The Rockets remain well-conditioned and boast a handful of key returning guards from last season, namely sophomores Kayla Ross and Shelby Holt.

But coach Mark Smith’s extra work on interior defense has only bolstered the team’s diversity and confidence.

“He really stresses it a lot and I think it really works,” Pryor said.

Bulldogs’ mantra: ‘One more week’ Batavia’s grip on an outright Upstate Eight Conference River Division title loosened to the point of sharing the hardware with Geneva, but the Bulldogs still like their chances at a solid 4A postseason run thanks to their tightness off the court.

Batavia knew it was going to get every opponent’s best shot sometime around midseason, when the Bulldogs kept faring well against a tough nonconference slate while winning their irst eight UEC River games.

The urgency isn’t going to change with the postseason around the corner. The Bulldogs will have home-court advantage for regionals, but other

teams will at least have a blueprint to try and slow down star guard Liza Fruendt.

Batavia has talked about a special season since summer camp, and doesn’t plan on wilting now.

Thing is, neither will the clubs on the other side of the court.

Although the Vikings inished 0-2 against co-champion Batavia, the Bulldogs’ late-season stumbles against the St. Charles schools allowed Geneva to make up ground to gain at least a share of its fourth straight league title. Batavia (third) and Geneva (ifth) earned high seeds in the upcoming 4A Addison Trail Sectional complex, and could potentially meet for the sectional title Feb. 27.

Why do you think it went as well for you as it did on Friday?

Just having guys like Drew David and John Pruett on your team really opens up some holes for me. I got to the bucket and made some free throws, just a lot of great passes. I scored a lot in the paint, not much outside, but John and Drew and everyone got me the ball in the middle of their zone. They ran like a press; I got in the middle and they made some great passes and I made some layups.

That was pretty much it.

I know Rochelle typically likes to really get up and down, too. Is it

fun to play that pace?

Oh yeah, it was awesome because early in the year, we tried to get out and run a lot more and then we kind of shied away from it lately, but at their place we got out and ran, and it felt pretty good.

What’s the enthusiasm level for this event you guys are putting on Saturday?

It’s awesome. We’re really high and enthused about it. It’s definitely for a great cause (Wounded Warrior Project), too, and we’re excited. … We thank coach Johnson for getting it set up because we know he [put a lot of time into it]. We’re honored to be a part of it.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you some difficult homework who would it be, and why?

I’d have to go with Tom VanBogaert.

He was in the paper a couple week ago I think for his academic honors.

He’s just an all-around smart kid who never slacks off in school, and he’s also one of my best friends, so I definitely have to trust him for that.

Kaneland senior forward Ty Carlson erupted for 33 points in Friday’s high-scoring game at Rochelle, surpassing his previous career high by 12 points. Carlson, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about his big game, this Saturday’s Kaneland Day and Knight of Hoops shootout and more. The following is an edited transcript:

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys basketball team didn’t work hard enough on the boards in Tuesday’s game, so Saints coach Pat Woods promised East will make amends in practice.

Naperville North dominated East in the rebounding department as the Huskies survived a turnover-riddled night by both teams to win the nonconference game, 61-58.

Woods made his remedy for East’s rebounding ills clear.

“It’s called practice,” Woods said. “We’re going to fix that problem really quick or we’re going to be the best-conditioned team in the Kane County area.”

Naperville North (14-8) won its fifth straight game, while slumping East (12-11) dropped its third in a row.

East senior forward AJ Washington had 11 rebounds to go with 13 points and seven blocked shots but none of his teammates gathered more than three rebounds as the Huskies won the rebounding battle by 20, by the Saints’ count.

“We have one guy rebounding right now, and that’s AJ,” Woods said. “We’ve got to get five guys rebounding, and until that happens, we’re going to continue to struggle.”

The Saints’ full-court defensive pressure rattled the Huskies consistently, presenting a multitude of extra opportunities. But East had its own uncharacteristic ball-handling woes, committing a season-high 23 turnovers, only three fewer than Naperville North.

“If we’re turning them over, great, but when we turn over the turnover that we get, it doesn’t matter,” Woods said.

On those sporadic occasions when Naperville North beat East’s press, the Huskies hit paydirt.

“When we didn’t turn it over, we scored, because they were pressing so much, so I think that was the key to the thing,” Naperville North coach Jeff Powers said. “I know coach Woods is such a great coach and he just put that pressure on us to see how we’d handle it, and we didn’t handle it very well at times, but then when we did, we got baskets.”

In addition to their turnover binge, the Huskies nearly gave the game away late at the free-throw line. Naperville North missed four straight free throws in the final 30 seconds, and East drew within 5958 on a Cole Gentry 3-pointer before calling timeout with 4.9 seconds to play.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE HINCKLEY – Moose heart’s participation in this week’s IHSA Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock Girls Basketball Regional showed how far the Ramblers have progressed – and how far the program has to go.

One night after Moose heart gained its first postseason victory since 2008, top-seeded host Hinckley-Big Rock scored the first 12 points, was never seriously troubled, and emerged Tuesday with a 52-13 victory. The defeat ended a season in which Mooseheart finished 3-18, three more victories than the team managed a year ago.

By the end of the first quarter, Hinckley-Big Rock led, 19-5, and already had enough points to win the game. Kammie Kolb hit the Ramblers’ basket in the first quarter while Hannah Tucker hit two free throws and Aishah Adebayo added a free throw of her own.

‘Winter’s Tale’ lacks warmth

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now “Winter’s Tale” is a romantic historical fantasy about miracles, but its most mysterious aspect is how a film rife with Academy Award talent – in front of and behind the camera – isn’t the least bit wondrous.

In adapting Mark Helprin’s best-selling novel, Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”) makes his directorial debut with a stacked deck of great actors and gorgeous cinematography. But that doesn’t stop him from clubbing us over the head with claptrap (a little goes a long way) about the universe, crossed destinies, master plans and magic. It’s all set to a romantically lush score by Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer that always tells you just how to feel.

What transpires on screen, though, is a film that keeps one-upping itself with ridiculosity. Exhibit A: Russell Crowe’s performance as a mythic boss of thugs and thieves. Exhibit B: Will Smith’s turn as Lucifer. Yes, you read that right.

Exhibit C: Falling instantly in love with

your home invader. How very “Labor Day.” Exhibit D: A mysterious flying white horse. The list goes on, but why spoil the fun?

The frivolity gets under way in present-day New York, with Colin Farrell’s Peter Lake mysteriously drawn to Grand Central Station in search of clues to his past. Flashback to 1845, when, as an infant, Peter is nestled into a model ship by his parents and launched into the waters surrounding Ellis Island en route to his destiny. Fast-forward to 1916, when a grown-up Peter is being pursued for being a crooked crook by Crowe’s Pearly Soames.

Along the way, Peter falls in love with the consumptive Beverly (Jessica Brown Findlay, the ill-fated Sybil from TV’s “Downton Abbey”), whom he meets while robbing her newspaper-publisher father’s (William Hurt) house. Their love story flourishes, with Pearly and his goons in hot pursuit. An old-fashioned battle of good vs. evil ensues. Their clash will continue into present day when the life of a little girl (newcomer Ripley Sobo) is on the line. Don’t do the math, it’s a futile exercise. In fact, the whole third-act has

that tacked-on feel. The continuity isn’t always there, and the story doesn’t grab you enough to make the leap of faith. But, you’ll hear lots of mumbo-jumbo about moonbeams and sunbeams. Says Beverly: “The sicker I become, the more clearly I can see that everything is connected by light!”

Hot off a terrific turn in “Saving Mr. Banks,” Farrell is at his best when he goes toe-to-toe with Hurt and makes a dashing lover for Brown Findlay in the first half of the film. He’s sweet and earnest and wears a tux well. In the second-half, he loses his romantic appeal when Goldsman turns him into a savior.

Lending support and adding gravitas just by showing up is Oscar-winner Eva Marie Saint (“On the Waterfront”).

Newcomer Mckayla Twiggs is a living doll as Beverly’s young sister. Jennifer Connelly, who won an Oscar in the Goldsman-scripted “A Beautiful Mind,” doesn’t have much to do here as the mother of the sick child. Her “Beautiful Mind” co-star, Crowe, doesn’t fare much better. At least he’s not singing his lines this time out, but there is some shape-shifting. The guy can’t win.

Girlfriend staying as guest deserves more respect Dear Abby: Last August my husband and I allowed our son’s 17-year-old girlfriend, “Lindsay,” to move into our home from out of state because she needs to live here for a year to establish residency for school. She’s a wonderful girl, mature, social and helpful.

My problem is my other sons (ages 18 and 14) are very angry that we have allowed a “stranger” to move in. My 18-year-old is a college student who lives on campus an hour away, but comes home on weekends. He and his younger brother feel I show favoritism to Lindsay and make frequent comments about the non-family member. They worry that I’m spending money on her even though they know her mom sends her money.

I’ll admit it has been nice to have a girl around. My boys sleep half the day away on weekends, but she gets up and is happy to run errands with me. I still include my sons in many activities without Lindsay, as I always have, and I did not anticipate this hostility. I feel bad for her because they make little attempt to hide it.

Help! – Mom Of Three Sons Dear Mom: You and your husband are the parents, which means you are supposed to be running this “asylum” – not the inmates. The decision about who should or should not be a guest in your home is not up to your jealous older and younger boys, who appear to be suffering from a form of “sibling” rivalry.

As a guest in your home, Lindsay should be treated with respect, and it’s not happening. You should insist upon it, and if your wishes are not complied with, there should be consequences.

Dear Abby: My husband of five years has three children from previous marriages. Earlier this year he learned some disturbing information about his youngest

child. He opted not to share the information with me so as not to violate her privacy. I found out about it a few weeks ago, and I am deeply hurt that I was excluded.

I feel I have never been included as a true part of the family, and this is just another example. He feels his explanation justifies his actions and that should be the end of it. I am concerned that he will keep other things from me he feels are none of my business in the future. I am not at all comfortable with this situation. Your husband decided not to discuss something with you that he felt would violate his daughter’s privacy. Much as you might like to, you can’t push your way into being accepted. Frequent urination at night becomes more common with age Dear Doctor K: I’m an older woman in good health, but I can’t get a good night’s sleep because I keep waking up to go to the bathroom. What can I do?

Dear Reader: “Nocturia” is the medical term for the need to get up frequently to urinate during the night. It’s a common cause of sleep loss, especially among older adults. In severe cases, a person may get up as many as five or six times during the night. This can lead to sleep deprivation and daytime fatigue.

One common cause of nocturia is easily corrected. Watch (and consider cutting down on) how much you drink in the two hours before bedtime. Be particularly careful about drinks containing caffeine and alcohol. They both cause the kidneys to pass more water.

Nocturia becomes more common with age, and several different conditions can cause it.

Some are just the result of aging and some are diseases.

As we get older, our brains produce less antidiuretic hormone. Normally, this hormone travels in the blood and causes the kidneys to make less urine.

Since we make less hormone as we get older, we make more urine

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff at night. Sometimes doctors treat this condition with a drug that causes the same effects as antidiuretic hormone.

Age also reduces the holding capacity of our bladder. Even when you don’t have that much fluid in the bladder, it senses that it is full. As a result, the bladder sends urgent signals to your brain that you need to urinate.

There are several diseases that can cause nocturia. Heart failure causes blood to be pumped less efficiently through the kidneys.

That leads to a buildup of excess fluid in the blood and the rest of the body. And that, in turn, causes the heart and kidneys to do everything they can to pass as much of that excess fluid as possible out in the urine.

Diabetes is another example.

The higher levels of sugar in the blood that come from diabetes “suck” fluid out of the tissues and cells of the body and into the blood. The extra fluid in the blood then is eliminated by the kidneys into the urine.

Low-grade urinary tract bacterial infections can cause frequent urination, usually of small amounts of urine. Sometimes an infection is suspected because it also hurts to urinate, but that’s not always the case.

Neurological conditions can affect the signals to and from the bladder, and the efficiency with which the bladder muscles function. One common example is “overactive bladder,” which causes increased contractions of the muscles that cause urination.

Muscle-relaxant drugs can help.

Medications, especially diuretics (widely used both to lower blood pressure and to rid the body of excess fluid), can cause nocturia as well.

Try the one thing that you can do yourself: Cut down on the amount of fluid you drink in the two hours before bedtime. If that doesn’t work, you should get checked out by your doctor.

Twelve-year-old girl afraid of her brother Dr. Wallace: I’m a 12-year-old girl, and I have a 10-year-old brother. Lately, he has been throwing rocks and stones at me because he’s mad that I told our parents that I saw him smoking a cigarette. He got in a lot of trouble and is now telling his friends to throw rocks and stones at me for “ratting” on him. He’s only 10, and I thought I was doing the right thing to tell my parents because they keep telling us that smoking is bad for our health.

Yesterday, my brother and his friends were following me on my way home from school, and they started throwing rocks at me, and whenever one hit me they all started laughing. When we got home, my brother told me he would do worse things if I ratted on him about the rocks. Now I’m really afraid of my brother. Dear Nameless: Tell your parents immediately! Your brother is a nasty bully who needs a good dose of stern discipline. Please make sure that your parents read today’s column, and I’m sure they will take care of the problem.

I know that I’m just as smart as she is, and this really disappoints me. Do you think she is getting better scores because her father teaches at our school and her mother is sometimes a substitute teacher at our school? – Nameless, Philadelphia, Pa.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Dear Nameless: I believe that the great majority of teachers grade students on individual efforts, not on who their parents are. I believe a few teachers, wittingly and unwittingly, give higher grades to students with influential parents. Sad, but true!

Many school districts do not permit husbands and wives to teach at the same school. Even though one is a substitute, I believe it’s a good rule.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-year-old girl with a big problem. I broke up with my boyfriend a while back because I felt sort of trapped in the relationship. I really felt bad about breaking up with him because it broke his heart. I felt really guilty and I could hardly face him or even talk to him on the phone. My best friend tried to help out, and she called him for me and helped him get over the breakup.

Then about a week ago I found out that my friend and Ken are now dating. This really bothers me, and now I’m thinking of all the fun times Ken and I shared, and I want to get back together with him. Do you think this is a possibility? – Sorry, Ontario, Calif.

In today’s deal, look at the auction and the West and North hands. South is in four spades.

West leads the diamond ace.

How should he continue the defense?

North, holding a low doubleton, reasonably chose to use Stayman. (If he had responded three no-trump, that contract could also have been defeated.)

South correctly rebid two hearts when holding four cards in each major. North jumped to three no-trump. And South, knowing his partner had four spades, corrected back to game in that strain.

When the dummy comes down, a good defender first checks out the high-card points.

South indicated 15-17, dummy has 13, and West holds seven.

That leaves 3-5 for East. So East could have one winner to go with West’s diamond ace-king.

But where is the fourth defensive trick?

Now count the suit lengths.

Dummy has three hearts, South showed four, and West has five.

East must have a singleton.

This is West’s best chance. At trick two – not after cashing the diamond king, a card needed as an entry – West shifts to a heart.

Then, East can take the first or second round of spades, return a diamond to his partner’s king, and receive a heart ruff to defeat the contract.

Elburn Chamber hosts winter dinner ELBURN – Pat Hill, owner of Hill’s Country Store and the village president of Kaneville, sounded surprised Saturday when she heard her name called at the Elburn Chamber of Commerce’s winter dinner.

Hill was announced as the chamber’s member of the year. Before getting up from her seat to collect her award, she said, “What did I do?”

Those honoring her told her that it was for her many donations and efforts at chamber events.

The Elburn chamber honored Hill, as well as Paisano’s Pizza & Grill in Elburn, which took home the business of the year honor.

Paisano’s, at 106 N. Main St., was displaying the award on its Facebook page.

The chamber’s annual dinner is a fundraiser for the organization’s scholarship fund, which benefits Kaneland High School students.

The theme again was horse racing, and those in attendance bought tickets to “bet” on taped horse races, with winners receiving small prizes. Many of the women in attendance wore elaborate “derby hats.”

The event took place at the Elburn Lions Club.

Money was raised through dessert auctions that those in attendance could bid on. Also,

Annette Theobald, who owns Paisano’s with her husband, Dick, said it was the second year that the business had been honored by the chamber.

“It feels good,” she said.

“But you are shocked because you are doing something that just comes natural for you.”

Paisano’s is widely hailed for playing a key role in supporting the Elburn community. Theobald said she

and her husband also enjoy volunteering. The Kaneville residents participate in softball and baseball leagues, and Annette Theobald is a trustee on the Kaneville Public Library Board. She also volunteers at St. Gall Catholic Church.

She said her husband is more likely to help out individuals – for instance, she said, he once hired two customers who were out of work and willing to learn to become cooks. She said they have become good employees.

She said she always is looking out for ways to help organizations. For instance, she said she recently learned of a fundraiser that was in the Kane County Chronicle, and she called the organization to donate gift certificates.

“I think more businesses should give back to the community and be personally involved,” she said.

February is Healthy Heart Awareness Month! In Physical Education classes for the month of February, students will learn about the Heart, Circulatory System, how to prevent heart disease, and being proactive in living a healthy lifestyle. Our unit culminates with our Jump Rope For Heart event and our Heart Obstacle Course which will be taking place the last week of February. Students will be travelling through the four chambers of the heart as blood cells, delivering oxygen to the body, and “battling” heart disease risk factors that can slow down this process. It’s a great unit that the kids love to participate in and that we love to teach!
