Early preschool registration soon

The St. Charles Park District will soon host registration for the 2016-17 school year at Pottawatomie Preschool.

“Our preschool programs make learning fun,” said Krista Mulready, supervisor of early childhood and preschool programs for the park district.

editorial@kcchronicle.com Winter might seem like a strange time to be talking about back-toschool stuff, but when it comes to preschool education, it’s never too early to be thinking about the best place for a child’s first introduction to the ways of the classroom.

That’s why parents of children currently enrolled in the 2015-16 Pottawatomie Twos Plus, Threes, and Fours and Fives programs should mark their calendars now for upcoming registration periods for the 2016-17 school season.

Registration for the 2016-17 school year will be held from mid-February through early March for participants already enrolled in the 2015-16 Pottawatomie Preschool programs through the St. Charles Park District.

Residents with children enrolled in Pottawatomie Fours and Fives can register Feb. 18 through 21; Pottawatomie Twos Plus and Pottawatomie Threes can sign up Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. Those residents not currently enrolled in any Pottawatomie Preschool program can register Feb. 24.

Nonresidents with children currently enrolled in Pottawatomie Twos Plus, Threes, and Fours and Fives can register March 2 and 3. Nonresidents not enrolled in any program can do so March 4.

Registration – plus a $50 nonrefundable deposit – secures a child’s place in the 2016-17 preschool season, which runs from early September through mid-May. Registration can be done online, but a participant’s household information needs to be in the park district’s database before one can access the online registration system.

Household information forms can be found in the back of St. Charles Park District seasonal brochure and are available at both the Baker Community Center and Pottawatomie Community Center.

A proof of residency – such as a copy of a current utility bill, driver’s license or state ID – also must accompany the completed household information form.

Participating in a high-quality preschool program not only helps children prepare for kindergarten, but it also starts establishing important socialization habits; develops fine and large motor skills; and introduces language skills and cognitive processes.

With emphasis on socialization skills and building self-esteem, Pottawatomie Twos Plus preschoolers learn how to take turns, follow directions and participate in group tasks.

Pottawatomie Threes participate in developmentally appropriate activities, from learning colors, numbers and shapes, to creative expression through art and play.

The desire to learn is further enhanced during Pottawatomie Fours and Fives, where science, math and phonics become part of the curriculum.

With statistics showing that children who attend at least one year of preschool enter kindergarten with better reading, language art, math and socialization skills, resources such as the Pottawatomie Preschool program are a cost-effective tool in a parent’s early childhood education arsenal.

Where did you grow up? Campton Township. My father is John Kupar, the Campton Township supervisor.

Who would play you in the movie of your life? Sandra Bullock First job? It was as a natural resources restoration intern at the McHenry County Conservation District.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I really wanted to be a paleontologist. But things kind of changed.

I ended up going to school for ecological

restoration and a minor in wildlife biology.

I did get to do some paleontology over one summer when I was in college, so I got to do a little of my dream.

Geneva High School to get modular classrooms

GENEVA – The Geneva District 304 school board chose to buy a used six-classroom modular unit for about $500,000 rather than purchase a new unit or expand Geneva High School, officials said.

bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A woman and two children were injured, and a driver was cited for failure to stop in a crosswalk in an incident that took place Saturday in Batavia, police said.

Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said the incident occurred at 3:24 p.m.

Saturday at West Wilson Street and South Batavia Avenue. The vehicle, a 2009 Honda Civic, driven by Jacobo A. Gamboa-Garces, 24, of the 500 block of Hamilton Lane in North Aurora, was traveling west on West Wilson, Mazza said.

Gamboa-Garces made a left turn to go south on Batavia Avenue, and he struck the pedestrians, Mazza said.

“The three pedestrians were all in the crosswalk and crossing with the signal and had the right of way,” Mazza said.

The pedestrians included a 50-yearold woman, and two girls ages 5 and 11, Mazza said.

BATAVIA – The city of Batavia now is seeking applicants for the post of city administrator and expects to hire someone for the job by June 1.

City Administrator Bill McGrath, who has been overseeing the city’s 222 employees and $104 million annual budget since 2000, is scheduled to retire Aug. 1.

Adriane Johnson, a consultant working with the city on the hiring project, told Batavia aldermen at a committee meeting on Tuesday that a 12-page recruitment brochure is complete and is being posted online.

The deadline for applications is March 21, Johnson said.

The posting is expected to attract many applicants.

editorial@kcchronicle.com We’ve seen the debates, heard the sound bites and read the articles ... it’s presidential primary season. If you aren’t yet registered to vote, the St. Charles Public Library makes it easy for you to participate in this truly exceptional American experience.

In partnership with the Kane County Clerk’s Office, voter registration is available at the library during all hours that the library is open, including evenings and weekends. The Illinois General Primary takes place March 15.

In order to vote in the primary election, you must be registered by Tuesday. To register, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old on or before the date of the next election and provide two forms of identification (one of which shows your current name and address).

Struggling Chipotle finally cleans up kitchen BLOOMBERG VIEW

Chipotle skipped lunch Monday so its 50,000 employees in the U.S. could watch a food-safety presentation. The company, which makes much of its commitment to fresh ingredients, has been humiliated by a recent food-poisoning outbreak that led to collapses in both its sales and shares.

This raises the question of whether the hygienic reforms the company is putting in place – including preparing many products at centralized commissaries rather than in each store’s kitchen, and blanching onions and other vegetables in hot water – will undermine Chipotle’s motto of providing “food with integrity.”

It shouldn’t: Keeping customers safe from foodborne illness should be high on the integrity checklist. In fact, the reforms Chipotle is making should be considered not just by rival restaurants, but also by school lunch programs – and, indeed, by anyone whipping up locally sourced, grassfed, farm-fresh, free-range, sustainable feasts in his or her own kitchen.

One of the most encouraging trends in American eating habits in recent years has been the emphasis on “farm-to-table” cooking. But it has drawbacks: Fresh, locally sourced food is too expensive for most Americans. Eating only what is nearby and in season can limit a diet in unhealthful ways. And many of these products carry a unique set of risks of foodborne illness.

Pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella and listeria can thrive in raw vegetables, as evinced by recalls in recent years of cantaloupes, cucumbers, lettuces and sprouts.

Many of these dangers have been addressed by the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture – and by Congress.

It’s hard not to feel a little schadenfreude at Chipotle’s comeuppance, given its morally superior marketing and its fashionable but wrongheaded ban on genetically modified foods. It also squandered goodwill with a lackluster response to locating the sources of the recent outbreaks, which has led to a federal criminal investigation.

But in rethinking the way it prepares food, even at a potential cost to its image, the company deserves some credit. (So, too, for announcing it will spend millions to help its suppliers maintain safety standards.) These are lessons in food safety neither Chipotle’s competitors nor its customers can ignore.

You bet I will be voting

With the recent Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primaries behind us, I, among many others, can see how this year is going to be heavily focused on the potential candidates and the ultimate Republican and Democratic nominees for the November elections.

Whether listening to candidates attack and insult each other’s actions and appearances, watching primary results on TV or overhearing my parents and teachers dissect what every statement and move by a candidate means for the presidential race, does it not seem like it is all just a bit too much to handle? Then again, I am an inexperienced first-time voter.

Though, after spending months reading posts online debating how one candidate is better than the other because of this and that (which, the Internet is a very biased place when it comes to political thinking), I’ve found there is no way for me, or anyone in America, to escape the political commotion that is engulfing the nation. Unless, of course, you simply do not care about the entire election and just choose to ignore all politics. Nonetheless, I have just about hit my breaking point for the amount of election information my brain can comprehend and my eyes can view.

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina Ultimately, I am looking forward to voting in my first primary election in March and actual presidential election in November. I know voting is probably not anything to get enthusiastic about, but doing it the first time around is going to be a special new experience. Yet, I am still confused about how to cast my vote once I am in the little voting booth. I keep worrying that I will mess up while voting. After all, school never taught my peers and me how to properly cast a ballot. In reality, I am just blowing this out of proportion. My parents have told me the entire process is electronic, and you just click for the nominee you want. All in all, this seems simple.

I just do not understand why all different communities in America have different types of voting technologies. For instance, some states have punch cards and others have mechanical lever machines. I would think – in the united country that we are – that we would all be united in the way that

we cast a ballot. Together, we could stand strong, using one type of voting technique.

During one of my history classes in middle school, my teacher discussed how American citizens have the right to vote. No one can force them to vote or not. Up until that point, I always believed voting was mandatory, not a choice. Over the years, my teachers would occasionally mention low voter turnouts during certain elections, and it always puzzled me how someone can be a citizen of our country and just not vote. Even if you do not feel extremely strongly about who wins the presidency, still vote, America! I cannot wait for the day where I can cast my very first ballot and have my voice be heard (in a small way). Plus, I just really want to wear a sticker that says, “I voted today.”

Today, Moberly continues to be the rock band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, alongside drummer Randy Flones and new bass player Bill Allen, all three of which are South Elgin residents. One of the band’s founders, Pete Pecoraro, also has been alongside Moberly for a number of years.

After about two years of writing, recording and production – all of which Moberly said were self-taught to the band – The Vinyl Goods released its fifth album, “The Light of Day.” The album, released on Jan. 12, was all written, recorded and produced in Kane County. It contains a themed set of original songs surrounding Christianity.

Moberly shared that the album is available on the band’s website, vinylgoods.com, as well as through just about any digital download platform, such as Google Play, iTunes and Spotify.

Though Moberly said the sound is at the best quality while listening to the actual CD, he said listeners would not be disappointed on any platform.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey caught up with Moberly to discuss the “The Light of Day” and what consumers can expect when listening.

Chris Casey: How did you develop into playing the kind of music you guys do today?

Tim Moberly: We were all heavily influenced by classic rock growing up.

So, you have your Beatles, Led Zeppelin, [Bruce] Springsteen, Pink Floyd and artists like them. It really comes from there.

I think anytime you form a band, you’re often influenced by the types of music you like listening to, and – for us – that was it. It kind of formed our style.

Casey: Where did the name The Vinyl Goods come from?

Moberly: It really came from our love of music as listeners. We’re all really students of music. Vinyl records were the way you listened to music back then. It’s kind of ironic because we never actually recorded a vinyl record. It’s just too expensive these days.

Casey: How about the new album? What inspired this kind of album?

Moberly: It’s really exciting content for us. We have never done something themed before. In this case, it’s Christian themed. Our previous albums were pop-rock, garage-band type stuff, you know. We have also recently become a lot more active in our local churches.

When you’re writing songs, you often write about what’s going on in your life, and – for us lately – it’s something that inspired us. So, we purposely set out to do our own collection of Christian-themed songs. Some are more specific than others, but – ultimately – the real measuring stick is bringing people to the church and [spreading] word of Jesus Christ. We have met our goal if it reaches one person. It’s not an album of pop songs, but rather an album with a purpose.

Casey: Was it tough recording an album all on

your own?

Moberly: It was interesting. I’ll say that. The entire album was recorded and mixed in a home studio, but it doesn’t sound like it at all. I took some online classes about recording and production, and it’s honestly just a great example of what independent musicians can put together by simply teaching ourselves.

We don’t have any of this top-of-the-line stuff. People can really do great things in a home studio.

Casey: You have some ties to Kane County outside of South Elgin, correct?

Moberly: Absolutely. We are all active in a number of St. Charles-based entities.

My drummer, Randy, and I are both members and praise at Hosanna! Lutheran Church in St. Charles. Our bass player, Bill Allen, is active in St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles. I’m also an assistant troop master of Boy Scout Troop 13 in St. Charles.

Added to the Angus patty, I chose American cheese and the applewood smoked bacon. My burger also came with lettuce, tomato, red onion and a pickle on the side. Our waitress said one of her favorite sides was the Elgin Public House Mac and Cheese, so I decided to give it a try.

The combination on the burger left me just hungry enough to finish my mac and cheese. For someone that generally eats a lot, I found myself having

Our waitress gave us a good amount of attention, not coming over to check on us too much or too little. She was very helpful with any questions we had, and both my dinner companion and I agreed that she was one of the better waitresses we have had.

Upon leaving, we were asked by a manager how our meal was, to which we both responded “very good.”

Any time you leave a restaurant after dining in, you want to remember the name because of the experience you had.

ELGIN – Sometimes you just want to relax and enjoy a pub burger.

Look no further than Elgin Public House. Having never been there, my first experience was extremely pleasant.

Upon walking into the restaurant located at 219 E. Chicago St. in Elgin, my dinner companion and I were greeted before being walked back to our table. At first, it seemed as though there might be limited seating, table-wise, but that was until we walked to the back of the restaurant.

There is a small seating section in the front of Elgin Public House, but the back dining room has a bar, multiple TVs (which happened to be airing a Chicago Bulls game during this recent visit) and both high- and low-top tables.

We were told our waitress would be right with us, which she was. After giving us a couple of minutes to look through the menu, she reminded my dinner companion and me that Mondays at the Elgin Public House feature half-price Angus beef burgers from 5 to 10 p.m.

That caught our attention. But even though we both ordered a burger, there were still many appealing options on the menu at Elgin Public House. My dinner companion ordered the KC Burger, while I ordered a Build Your Own Burger.

My dinner companion wanted to try something new, and the KC Burger was just that. It was a recommendation from our waitress, largely because of its unique combination.

The KC Burger ($10.25) is an Angus beef patty topped with white cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon and barbecue sauce, and came with lettuce,

kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Like clockwork, bowling alleys resound with the clatter of rolling balls and falling pins at any given moment.

The St. Charles North girls team aims to go above the noise every time it competes, supporting one another with cheers and positive feedback. Saturday’s IHSA Rolling Meadows Sectional at the Mount Prospect Brunswick Zone is no different.

“We’re always not just trying to improve on ourselves, but help our teammates out,” North Stars sophomore Alyssa Byers said. “I think we all try to make sure we stay positive. Even though we might bowl bad one game, you really try to step it up for the next game and help our team out.”

North finished second among 12 teams at the Lake Park Regional at the Roselle Brunswick Zone this past weekend,

rolling a 5,185 over six games. Host Lake Park won the event with a 5,643. St. Charles East (4,788) placed fourth, claiming the final team qualifying spot.

To advance to the state tournament, held Feb. 19 to 20 at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford, the North Stars must place in the top four of the team standings. North knows that’s a challenging task, but team members figure they have the stomach – and the vocal cords – for pursuing it.

During a compact season in which competition only begins on the final Friday of November, obstacles inevitably sprout. The North Stars use their collective resolve to clear them.

“Practicing,” said Jessica Miller, the team’s lone senior. “Throwing balls at 10 pins. Throwing them at seven pins. Just keeping the repetition up and keeping our energy up, especially when we’re actually playing. Just so we can bring each other up.”

The North Stars find themselves in a familiar position. The program has fin-

ished second at regionals in each of the three seasons since the IHSA added that component to the state series, beginning with the 2013-14 school year.

However, sectional success has not always been guaranteed. North placed eighth in that round in 2014 and 10th last season, although Claire Sebastian, now a junior, advanced to state as an individual in 2015.

North coach Lindsay Madej has been encouraged with the team’s consistent progression, including last month’s competitive loss to Upstate Eight Conference power West Aurora.

“That was really exciting,” Madej said. “Because they’re clearly dominant.”

The North Stars look to maintain those vibes and an optimistic attitude this weekend.

“I’m really glad that my team has helped push us up,” Miller said. “We all get along so well, and I don’t want this season to end.”

Beitzel leading by example for Geneva Local qualifiers for IHSA Glenbard West Sectional

ccasey@shawmedia.com It wasn’t an easy sight to see for anyone.

Geneva’s 2013-14 all-around state champion gymnast Claire Ginsberg hurt her shoulder and eventually found out she would miss the remainder of her junior season.

As tough as it was to deal with – Ginsberg had successful surgery Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in her left shoulder – the season had to go on.

It was time for someone to step up, and Geneva coach Kim Hostman looked no further than junior Paige Beitzel.

“Paige has really been a great leader,” Hostman said. “Her and Claire were our captains and Paige has done a great job in Claire’s absence leading by example and lending advice wherever it’s needed. She’s one of the few girls we have that’s been to a sectional, so some of the girls have been leaning on her as far as what to expect.”

Beitzel will compete as one of Geneva’s two all-around gymnasts at today’s IHSA Glenbard West Sectional.

The other? Freshman Sophia Hostasa.

While Hostman knew there was a strong chance Hostasa’s 33.125 score at the Geneva Regional would get her through to sectionals, she didn’t find out until after the meet.

One thing that does not have the Geneva coach worried, however, is that these girls aren’t brand new. They might be freshmen, but it’s not as if today’s sectional will be the first time they’re performing.

“It’s been nice because they have had to step in a few meets right after the DeKalb dual (Jan. 20, when Ginsberg suffered her injury),” Hostman said.

“Early on, you could tell they were extremely nervous, but having regionals and talking to them about mental state has helped. They need to relax and be focused. I think those couple of meets were a very good experience for them.”

The injuries that Geneva has endured have been tough, and the team can always put the “what if” spin on this season, but it does offer a number of returners to the 2016-17 team much-needed experience.

“It’s a bit disappointing knowing what kind of talent we have fully healthy,” Hostman said. “You don’t have these injuries and we would be right in (the) mix, with Claire in the mix to win the all-around. But the girls have persevered and know what our goals are for the rest of the season.”

While Lauren Stangl and 2015 state qualifier Megan McGee received automatic sectional spots by finishing in the top five in their respective events, Bulldogs senior McKenna Sloan had to wait.

Sloan earned a score of 8.35 on the balance beam routine, which was strong enough to get an at-large bid into today’s Glenbard West Sectional.

She wasn’t the only one who received good news about an at-large bid.

McGee also will get to perform in each of her three events – qualifying auto-

matically in vault and receiving atlarge bids in uneven bars and her floor exercise. Stangl will get to perform both beam and bars at today’s meet.

McGee said she was “hoping to get through on other events” and got her wish, while Stangl was overcome with joy in making it to sectionals as a senior.

Also receiving an at-large bid for Batavia for sectionals was Jamie Ann Clark (8.575 on beam).

“I’m happy for our seniors, you know,” Batavia coach Taryn Boyce said. “You never want your career to end, so it means a lot that they got

We have to clean that up because once you reach (sectionals), you face some of the best competition. It can’t happen because a 139 (the team’s winning score at the Geneva Regional) isn’t going to do it at sectionals.”

Dear Abby: “Roger” and I have been seeing each other for two years. (We are both 50.) He is very handsome.

We go to movies, ride our bikes together, work out at the gym and attend other events. He calls me every night, sends emails during the day – even calls me when he’s on a break from work.

Dear Dr. K: I had radiation therapy for breast cancer a few years ago. Now I’m reading radiation therapy might increase my risk for heart disease. Is this true?

Dear Reader: Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to damage or destroy cancer cells. It harms cancer cells primarily by damaging their genes. But the radiation also can damage the genes of healthy cells.

Newer radiation techniques allow higher doses of radiation to be aimed more precisely at the area being treated. This reduces damage to healthy tissue near a tumor, but it doesn’t eliminate it completely. For example, radiation to the chest, as done during breast cancer treatment, can harm the heart muscle, arteries and valves.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Deepak Bhatt, executive director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart and Vascular Center. He noted in women who have had breast radiation, the lifetime risk of having a heart attack or another major cardiac event increases about 3 percent. Women who have radiation to the left breast, which is closer to the heart, have a higher chance of problems. The overall dose of radiation also plays a role.

Radiation-related heart effects can emerge as soon as five years after treatment. So women who have breast cancer at a younger age may develop heart problems earlier than would otherwise be expected.

Undergoing baseline heart tests before treatment starts sometimes can help doctors monitor heart changes. That way, they can be addressed quickly if they occur.

You might not be able to protect yourself completely from the side effects of radiation, but you can take other steps to bolster your heart health. Here are some proven strate-

South is faced with a choice of side suits to play on, and often it would not matter, but in this layout only the correct line will work.

South is in six spades. West leads the club king. South takes the trick and cashes his two top spades to learn that West will get a trump trick.

How should declarer continue?

North’s three-heart rebid was a transfer, and four clubs was a superaccept promising four-card spade support, a doubleton somewhere and the club ace. When North happily showed his diamond ace, South took a shot at slam.

Declarer is faced with two losers: one spade and one club. Somehow he has to discard one of dummy’s clubs before West can ruff in and cash the club queen. If West ruffs as dummy’s third club evaporates, that does not matter. But should South start on hearts or diamonds?

It looks obvious to play on hearts because declarer has only five cards in that suit -- but it is wrong. West must hold three diamonds for South to have any chance; and just in case he has four, declarer should cash three tricks in that suit first. If they split 3-3, South shifts immediately to hearts. Here, though, declarer takes the fourth diamond and pitches one of dummy’s clubs. Then he plays off his hearts to jettison dummy’s last club. West’s ruff is too late for the defense.

How to up your design game

The Washington Post As you study vignettes on your bookmarked design blogs, flip through pages of shelter magazines and bingewatch HGTV shows, it’s hard not to imagine certain design details transforming your own home.

Winter, when you spend more time indoors scrutinizing your four walls and your furniture assortment, is a good time to make a few changes to enhance your living quarters. Design professionals have a lot of tricks that can enliven rooms, whether it’s to make the most of a small space or add a dimension to a larger one.

You can choose to break the rules or honor them. But everyone needs a little inspiration.

“Many people are paralyzed when it comes to making changes in their home, even small ones,” said Sheila Bridges, a New York designer.

“People are freaked out by color. They want to have everything look perfect immediately. But decorating is really a process. The longer it takes or the more you slow down and enjoy that process of building and editing, the better your home will evolve. “

We asked Bridges and other top designers to share a best practice with us – ideas they are incorporating into their own work right now, as well as those that have stood the test of time.

Here are their emailed suggestions, suitable for pinning to your “Designer Secrets” inspiration board.

1. Look to your travels for texture

“My design aesthetic has always been intensely personal. As you look to update a room you’ve lived in for years, or if you’re starting fresh in a new home, begin by curating what you have.

I like to bring together groupings of well-traveled objects, textiles, decorative accessories and furniture . . . things that represent the people who live there.

Think hand-woven elements, thick textiles, objects that have patina and mix in with beautiful, neutral upholstery and furniture. A well-designed room is one that is layered and feels assembled over time,” said Nate Berkus of New York.

Expert answers 5 common clutter questions

Special to The Washington Post As an organizer, I’ve helped clients conquer many challenges. But there are some questions I’m asked over and over again, and the solution is usually the same. Here are quick answers to some common questions.

Q: I don’t like this gift, but I feel guilty giving it away. What should I do?

A: If the item was purchased at a store and isn’t incredibly valuable, it is totally OK to donate it or give it to a friend or family member who will enjoy it. The person who gave it to you would not want you to keep things you don’t want and probably will never know that you don’t still have it.

Q: I haven’t worn this sweater for five years, but it has always been one of my favorites and might come back into style. Should I keep it?

A: The answer to this one is almost always no. Sure, there is a chance it will be fashionable again, but probably not for a long time. Ask yourself whether it’s worth holding on to it for years “just in case.” It probably

isn’t. However, if you’re contemplating whether to keep a few things that are in great condition, fit you and are timeless, it’s OK to keep them. But let’s be honest: Few things fit these criteria, so consider carefully. If you do want to keep a couple of pieces of clothes because they conjure good memories or remind you of a special occasion, go for it, but don’t keep them in your closet if you’re not going to wear them. Instead, store them somewhere else.

Q: What should I do with all my digital photos?

A: First, make sure they are backed up. Second, do something.

Endlessly thinking about what to do is not going to solve the problem.

I realize that for many of us, we’re talking about thousands – and sometimes tens of thousands – of photos, but trying to decide on the perfect solution is a losing proposition.

unwanted shots. As with all organizational challenges, break the task into manageable pieces, work on it consistently and set a realistic goal for completion.

Q: An old piece of furniture (or art) was passed down to me, but I don’t want it. What should I do?

A: Getting rid of art or old pieces of furniture is a process fraught with guilt for many people. It can be difficult to part with something you’ve inherited until you know, with some certainty, whether the item is valuable and whether anyone else in the family wants it. So do some research, and if the answers to those questions are no, give yourself a deadline and make a decision. If you ultimately decide to donate the item, you’ll be relieved and someone else will be happy.

Q: What should I do with my kids’ artwork?

A: There is not a one-size-fits-all solution to this common question, but waiting until your kids are 18 is definitely not the answer. Neither is keeping everything because your child would be upset if you tossed something. The most important

thing is to create a system that works for you. I suggest culling through the stack each week or month. Toss the pieces that are clearly not keepers and put the ones you want to save in a bin labeled with the year and the child’s name.

Keep this bin somewhere accessible but not in your immediate living space. At the end of the year, go through it and decide what to keep for the long term.

Some people choose to take pictures of their favorites to create a calendar or photo book (there are also apps that will do this for you), some frame the best work or give a few pieces to family members, and some just keep the artwork in the box and add to it the following year. Whatever strategy works for you is a good strategy.

Although I get asked these questions frequently, I find that most people already know the answers. So trust your instincts, make a decision and move on.
