Collecting coats and promoting tolerance SUGAR GROVE – When Kaneland High School junior Andy McFarlin decided to put together a coat drive to benefit Aurora-based Hesed House, he said he saw an opportunity to turn it into a cooperative project.

McFarlin last year was the president of Kaneland’s Gay Straight Alliance. He also has been involved in the Greater Fox River Chapter of Operation Snowball, a program that aims to prevent alcohol and drug use, as well as Kaneland’s PODA group, which stands for Prevention of Dangerous Actions. Those groups participated in the coat drive.

McFarlin also reached out to a Bible study group that included Kaneland students, as well as students at Kaneland Harter Middle School. The result was a successful coat drive. McFarlin said there

Another student, Hannah Morris, and McFarlin were honored at Monday night’s Kaneland School District 302 Board meeting. Cheryl Krauspe, the school board president, said the students “truly represent what it means to live in the Knight way.”

McFarlin said while the Bible study group might not agree on all issues with those in the Gay Straight Alliance, those involved were able to rally around the need to come together and help clothe homeless people.

“I thought about how I could push the Kaneland community boundaries and stir up some emotion,” McFarlin said, adding that it was why he felt it was so important that the groups could work together to prove, “No, these groups do not hate each other.”

“Controversy is not something people like naturally … but it’s something I am interested in,” McFarlin said.

He added that those in the Bible study group are “actually well-rounded, accepting people who are willing to help out someone, no matter what their background.”

As for the middle school students, McFarlin said they “had no problem taking part,” adding those at Harter made the drive a true success. He said those with the school’s student council “collected way more coats than anyone from

the high school could have dreamed.”

McFarlin said he enjoyed his time as the president of the Gay Straight Alliance and might be up for trying to do it again.

“It’s not just about sexuality or gender identity,” he said. “It’s about making sure the community is a healthy place.”

Waubonsee Community College looking at tuition hike

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Waubonsee Community College might increase its tuition and fees to make up for a decrease in state funding.

Board trustees are set to vote on the issue during a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Dickson Center community board room, Room 220A, at WCC’s Sugar Grove campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive.

WCC has a guideline that calls for operating costs to be divided into thirds, with the state picking up one-third, local property taxes picking up

one-third and student tuition/ fees piking up one-third, said Jim Sibley, WCC’s executive director of marketing and communications “With the state not being able to provide that one-third, it’s difficult moving forward,” Sibley said. “The portion of the college’s revenue that’s received from the state has been steadily declining.”

WCC charges $112 a credit hour, below the state average for community colleges of $118.77 a credit hour, according to information provided by the college.

The latest tuition hike occurred in the last year, when tuition went from $105 a credit hour to its current charge of $112 a credit hour.

The college’s tuition and fees is the third-lowest among community colleges in Chicago’s collar counties, according to a chart provided by WCC. At $144 a credit hour, College of DuPage charges the most, according to the chart.

“What has been presented is a philosophy,” Sibley said.

“The focus of it is to maintain an appropriate and competitive tuition rate moving for-

ward.”

The board would determine when the tuition hike would go into effect, he said.

WCC trustees have been discussing the issue, including at a special meeting on Feb. 4. A news report had questioned whether it was appropriate to discuss certain topics during a closed session at the meeting.

Sibley denied there was any wrongdoing.

“The topics that were actually discussed in the closed meeting were appropriate for being discussed in a closed-session meeting,” he said.

Kane County morgue reopens after eight-month closure

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Taken individually, the changes at the Kane County Coroner’s Office might not seem like much.

But when the improvements – which include new track lighting for a family viewing room, new cabinets, a new exhaust fan, a new cooler, a new freezer and upgrades to the kitchen – are taken together, the changes add up.

“Little things mean a lot,” Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner Karen Engh said Tuesday during an open house for the morgue’s reopening.

The morgue closed in June after mold was found there.

The mold later was found to

be nontoxic.

During the morgue’s eightmonth closure, autopsy and body storage operations were outsourced to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office in Wheaton.

“Thank you DuPage for having us, but we’re glad to be back,” Engh said. “We are thrilled to be back.”

In November 2013, the morgue freezer encountered a problem with a broken compressor. Two bodies stored there began to decompose.

Now, Engh said, the cooler and freezer have alarms that immediately will notify coroner and maintenance staff when temperatures get too high or too low.

his staff can celebrate the morgue’s reopening and appreciate what’s been done, but he doesn’t want the county’s leaders to forget that his office eventually will need to grow.

“We did what we could do with the existing facility,” Russell said. “Short of expanding the walls, we’re good.”

The first autopsy in the renovated morgue is scheduled for today, Engh said.

‘JEFFERSON WAS AMAZING’ Re-enactor says portraying former president a challenge he enjoys

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Looking as if he just walked out of the early 1800s, Phil Lauricella took a seat at a desk in a room transformed to make Thomas Jefferson feel right at home.

With scrolls of writings, black-and-white photos and “Jefferson’s Bible” placed on the desk, one could imagine the nation’s third president having just walked out of a time machine. It’s Lauricella’s job to make it seem that way. He is a historical re-enactor, and Jefferson is a character he portrays more than 20 times a year.

Presidents Day is Monday, and while the day traditionally celebrates the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, www. history.com notes that the day “is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.”

Lauricella, 63, said he has been on the journey for more than 10 years. After spending 30 years as a corporate credit manager, he lost his job and “decided I didn’t want to go back to working for other people.” He opened a store in Geneva, Don’t Know Much About History. He also works as other characters, in particular, a Civil War surgeon, and he said his appearances as Jefferson can be controversial.

On a website promoting his character, he describes Jefferson as “a liberty-loving slaveholder,” “an Indian-loving relocationist,” “an advo-

cate of public frugality, yet died bankrupt” and a man who “championed the freedom of the press, but suppressed it in his presidency.”

There is the Sally Hemmings controversy, in which it was claimed that Jefferson fathered children with a slave at Monticello.

“Doing Jefferson is a challenge,” Lauricella said. “You have to defend yourself on so many levels.”

So, why portray Jeffer-

son? Lauricella said that “everybody does Lincoln and Washington,” but he said there is something special about Jefferson. He said both Republicans and Democrats will quote Jefferson.

There is the Declaration of Independence, the Louisiana Purchase and the key role Jefferson played in shaping the nation.

But, he said, “Jefferson is an enigma.”

He said when people press him on the Sally Hemmings issue, “I tell them what Jefferson would tell them. … It’s none of your business.”

The issue of slavery in particular could be an issue.

Lauricella said Jefferson is “the poster child for slavery, and also all men are created equal. … And when you put those two posters in the same room at the same time, you’ve got a problem.”

Lauricella said he doesn’t shy from the conflicts. He said he addresses them in the context of the time, but he’ll also apply Jefferson’s philosophy to today’s issues.

He said there is no shortage of material.

“Jefferson was amazing,” he said, adding that, “Defending him is a joy.”

bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A fundraiser to aid an Elburn family whose daughter was born with severe birth defects is set for 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at the American Legion, 112 N. Main St., Elburn.

Tickets to the event are $25, which includes a meal and a drink. Ticket sales will be limited to 400. Drawings begin at 5:30 p.m., though winners need not be present.

The drawings will have a total payout of $2,500.

Annette Theobald, co-owner of Paisano’s Pizza in Elburn, is organizing the event.

Meagan Seals’ birth defects, which include incomplete brain development, usually result in death at birth or soon after. Meagan survived, marking her fifth birthday in November. She has the mental capacity of a 3- to 4-monthold, cannot walk and will not grow beyond her current 20 pounds, her mother, Luellen Seals, said.

Her family has $40,000 in medical bills after getting emergency surgery for Meagan, and the fundraiser is to help with that, as well as continuing medical expenses, Luellen Seals said.

ST. CHARLES – The former owner of a now-defunct traveling petting zoo pleaded not guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and neglect. She asked for a jury trial.

Stacy Fiebelkorn, 36, of Elgin was charged March 5, 2014, after 94 animals in her Mini Zoo Crew were found sick and starving, including a dozen dead. Most were found on a farm in Hampshire. A mare and fetus were found dead on a farm near Maple Park.

Fiebelkorn’s attorney said late last year that she had hoped for an offer of a plea agreement from the Kane County State’s Attorney, but said none was offered. Assistant Kane County State’s Attorney Joe Cullen said Tuesday the office does not comment about

Fiebelkorn’s case will be transferred to the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38, St. Charles Township. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 19. She will be assigned a judge, and a date will be set for the jury trial.

Fiebelkorn’s traveling zoo animals included horses, mini-horses, ponies, donkeys, alpacas, llamas, goats, chickens and rabbits. Though she initially fought to get her animals returned, Fiebelkorn eventually agreed to give them up to Kane County Animal Control.

Volunteers took over the animals’ feeding and care while they were kept at various farms during their recovery. Some died or had to be euthanized because of their condition. Eventually, all survivors were adopted out to new homes.

Officials eye water, sewer rate increase

A water and sewer study commissioned by the Batavia City Council is recommending officials increase water and sewer rates. David Hyder, vice president of Municipal and Financial Services Group, discussed the study Tuesday in front of the Committee of the Whole. Aldermen will now review and decide whether to accept the study’s recommendations. The study recommended increasing water and sewer rates over the next five years to fund ongoing operations and capital investments in the water and sewer systems. As proposed, water rates would increase by 3 percent in 2016 and 2017, and by 4.5 percent in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The study also recommended increasing sewer rates by 6 percent from 2016 through 2020. It also recommended the city adopt an alternative residential water rate structure that includes a summer peak surcharge rate, and increase industrial sewer user charges.

Average users would see monthly water and sewer bills increase from $51.34 to $53.73 next year under the current water rate structure, according to the study. Under the alternative residential water rate structure, big users with a current monthly water and sewer bill would increase from $101.47 to $115.35 for the same period next year.

The study said about 14 percent of the city’s water lines, which would cost $24 million to replace, are exceeding useful life. It recommends the city “ramp up” the rate of replacement, or about $2 million a year by 2025. Officials also have anticipated that about $50 million in improvements might be necessary over the next decade at the wastewater treatment facility to comply with new regulations and to expand treatment capacity.

Kane County Board OKs cuts to sheriff’s budget

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County sheriff now must operate with a smaller budget.

In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Kane County Board approved an ordinance that reduces the sheriff’s budget by $225,000 – a measure taken in response to forfeited revenue from the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

Sheriff Donald Kramer, who last week told board members that any budget reduction would cripple his ability to provide minimum service, did not address the board. He provided reporters with a written state-

ment afterward.

“It is disappointing that the board is taking legal action to reduce the budget of an elected official,” according to the statement.

“This action will adversely affect the sheriff’s [office’s] ability to provide sufficient public safety. I ask for your support in resolving this matter.”

The cut is a step in remedying a nearly $1.4 million revenue loss caused by reducing the federal inmate population by 43. The full program was expected to bring in $2.5 million.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick reiterated Tuesday that cuts need to be made if the

$1.4 million cannot be replaced.

“It’s as simple as that,” Onzick said.

Although the approved ordinance suggests where the $225,000 should be reduced in the sheriff’s general fund budget, it gives Kramer the option to make reductions where he sees fit.

Kramer said he knows where he will make cuts but declined to provide specifics, noting more details will be shared at the Jan. 24 Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting.

Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, asked Onzick about the expenses affiliated with housing the feder-

al inmates. By his estimation, Onzick said, the direct costs are about $14 a prisoner a day.

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the matter will be discussed in detail at the committee level.

Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, encouraged his colleagues to work with, not against, the sheriff to overcome this obstacle.

“It’s a big bump,” Kenyon said.

In other news, the board approved a resolution declaring the vacancy caused by Jesse Vazquez’s death last month.

Candidates should live in District 8 and be a Democrat, like Vazquez, Lauzen said.

Townhouse project gets approval from Geneva panel

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In a series of votes at a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday, Geneva aldermen ultimately recommended approval of a development of 30 new townhouses.

Called Park Place, the project, proposed by Oak Creek Capital Partners, required an amendment to the city’s Downtown Station-Area Master Plan, from single residential family to single family residential attached, officials said.

The 2.16-acre property is bounded by North Street, Stevens Street, North First Street and North Second Street, and involves demolition of seven existing homes, officials said.

The meeting lasted more than three hours, as about 40 people attended the committee meeting to speak out against the project’s size and density.

Aldermen voted, 8-2, in favor of the master plan amendment, with 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings and 3rd Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg voting against it.

They then voted, 8-2, in favor of rezoning the property to multiple family residential, with Cummings and Kilburg again voting against it. Aldermen then voted, 6-4, to allow a special use for the project, with 1st Ward Aldermen Mike Bruno and Craig Maladra joining Cummings and Kilburg to vote against it.

They voted, 9-1, to require

a cash contribution of about $20,000 to Geneva School District 304 and nearly $89,000 to the Geneva Park District. Kilburg voted against it.

Aldermen reduced the amount of the cash award based on credits for existing houses on the property. Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte objected. The

park district should have gotten about $30,000 more, she said.

“I’m here to advocate on behalf of the park district for the full land-cash contribution,” Lambillotte said. “It is warranted by city ordinance and state statute.”

John Luczynski of Oak Creek Capital Partners said company officials were happy

with the vote.

“Our goal through the whole build-out is to work with the city and the neighbors,” Luczynski said. “We want to be a good corporate citizen.”

Luczynski said he and his partner met with some of the neighbors Wednesday to talk about their objections and what it would take to gain their sup-

port.

Luczynski said he was drafting an email to city staff to further tweak the project to address their issues. He said he would not reveal the proposed changes until staff had a chance to read them.

The committee’s recommendations will go to the city council for final action.

district would be selling the buses, but “once you sell your fleet, it’s likely you will never own again.” However, she said the district would have newer buses that need less maintenance.

Fuchs will go through a bid process, and the costs will be presented at a future meeting.

Board members said they would consider such options, but one member, Peter Lopatin, said he had a request about the future funding of projects with money that could be available in the district’s fund balance. He said it might be best if district officials would “not make ad hoc recommendations” to be presented to the board. He said ideas can sound appealing, but then there wouldn’t be a conversation about other ways the money can be spent.

“One of my first questions will be – ‘How else can we use that money?’ ” Lopatin said.

SUGAR GROVE – Telling school board members “we have to be more aggressive” as officials seek a long-term plan to address the district’s aging bus fleet, Kaneland Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs received board approval to explore several options.

At Monday night’s Kaneland School District 302 Board meeting, Fuchs told board members that, at minimum, the district can go ahead with an existing plan to replace at least five buses, each carrying 71 passengers. Fuchs said the district has 58 buses, many of which have “a significant amount of mileage on them.”

Fuchs also sought to look into pricing for an additional 10 buses, adding that some of the cost for that could be available in the district’s fund balance. Also, she wanted to look

into the possibility of having the district lease school buses instead of buying them.

Board members gave the green light to examine those possibilities. One member, Tony Valente, said he would like Fuchs to look into an additional option – outsourcing the entire operation. Fuchs said she had considered that.

She said she could study that, but such a report wouldn’t be likely for the upcoming school year. Valente said he understood it would take time.

Fuchs said the district will “need to do something” on the issue. She said the plan originally was to replace eight buses each year, but that has not happened, and “to better manage the fleet, more than five school buses each year should be replaced.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘AMERICAN SNIPER’ A GREAT MOVIE To the Editor: After seeing the movie “American Sniper” and hearing the negative comments, I want to enlighten everyone. Having served in the U.S. Army, a sniper is not only a Navy SEAL, as there are snipers in other branches of the U.S. military.

A sniper is in no way a coward! He not only takes out the enemy, but he covers his unit and other units as they sweep hill to hill, valley to valley and building to building. He has their backs. God only knows how many American soldiers have been saved from death or injury by his accurate shots.

A sniper is sometimes the target of enemy snipers who are scanning the area also. Once you fire that shot and the flash or sound is detected, now you become the target if located. Anyone who makes negative remarks about a sniper has never served in the military where he had your back.

I highly recommend seeing “American Sniper.”

Clint Eastwood and the actor really nailed it. It has been reported that those who knew or served with Chris Kyle, the person who Bradley Cooper portrays in the movie, said that Cooper portrayed the SEAL accurately.

Ford will sell you a limited-edition F-150 pickup truck designed to look like a Tonka toy. A company called MAC regularly brings out limited-edition cosmetics, including lipstick and eyeliner inspired by comic-book hotties Betty and Veronica.

And now you can’t walk down the aisle in a grocery store without being bombarded by limited-edition cookies, chips and other snack foods.

According to a list maintained by the website taquitos.net (“Serious about snacks”), limited-edition foods over the past decade number in the hundreds and include such offerings as Lay’s Tastes of America

Limited editions jump on flavor trends. Salted caramel is big now. So is pumpkin spice. The latest product to earn a place in my household’s pantry was inspired by the great cupcake explosion: Limited-Edition Red Velvet Oreos, a flavor Nabisco introduced on Feb. 2 in honor of Valentine’s Day. Oreo first dipped a cookie into the limited-edition milk way back in 1985, when Oreo Mint Creme cookies were introduced for a limited time.

Since then the Nabisco brand has offered such limited-edition versions as Marshmallow Crispy, White Fudge, Limeade and Fruit Punch.

Some do it in the guise of a contest. Every year, Lay’s invites consumers to suggest flavors for its potato chips, which is how we got limited-edition Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese chips, Wasabi Ginger chips, Mango Salsa chips and Cappuccino chips.

“The mango- and coffee-flavored chips were horrible,” Eric said.

Eric admits he isn’t an expert in how food companies think. His day job is as a labor lawyer in Washington; wolfing down junk food and writing about it is just a hobby.

But he has his theories. Competition for gro-

cery-store shelf space is fierce. Nimble, smaller firms are able to push the flavor envelope, something that used to be difficult for larger companies.

“More and more they’re seeing greater competition in more niche spaces, with smaller snack food companies testing the waters first with various flavors,” Eric said. “Larger companies are picking up on these trends much earlier now.”

Sometimes, limited-edition foods become regular foods, sort of the way a mistress sometimes becomes a wife. Both Birthday Cake Oreos (created in 2012 to honor the cookie’s 100th anniversary) and Lemon Oreos started as limited editions before making their way to the bigs.

I wonder if there’s a

danger in limited-edition products – if in their unceasing pursuit of novelty, food companies risk diluting loyalty. Janda Lukin, senior director for Oreo North America, doesn’t think so.

“Research has shown us that consumers are seeking out variety when it comes to snacking,” she wrote in an email. “Our limited-edition flavors deliver not only variety, but a bit of excitement that we feel only helps to build on the core love of Oreo we see from our fans.”

They can deliver something else, too: Though a package of Red Velvet Oreos costs the same as regular Oreos, it contains only 75 percent as many cookies.

editorial@kcchronicle.com CAROL STREAM – As Geneva’s Grace Ginsberg watched on while teammate Holly Friedel was being tended to after a rough fall on the uneven parallel bars in Tuesday night’s girls gymnastics sectional at Glenbard North, the senior captain knew she’d have her work cut out for her.

The Vikings still were in the thick of a first-place battle with the DeKalb/Sycamore co-op and she needed to put together a good routine of her own on the bars to help her team bounce back.

With emotions running high, she completed her routine and stuck the landing, scoring an 8.775 that helped her team take home the sectional title.

“You see somebody work so hard all season, and then you watch [the Friedel injury] and all of a sudden you’re up next,” Ginsberg said describing the raw emotion of the mo-

ment. “I was focusing on my routine, and I wanted to do well because I know if she was here she would have done the exact same thing.

“When I stuck the landing I was excited because I wanted to get my team back on track.

It was huge for our confidence because we still had another event left and two more girls.”

The two girls that followed the elder Ginsberg were fellow senior captain Megan Beitzel and little sister Claire Ginsberg.

Beitzel put together a solid routine to card an 8.9, while Claire Ginsberg scored a 9.350 that was good enough for second in the event.

It was one of four podium

finishes for the defending allaround state champion. In addition to the second-place finish in bars, Claire Ginsberg would take third in the vault, first on the balance beam and tied for first in the floor exercise as her 38.175 gave her the all-around title.

Jennifer Weber went to the free-throw line for three shots with 6.9 seconds to go and her team trailing, 53-52. Weber made only the middle of the three attempts, and though the rebound went out of bounds to Kaneland, a Knights turnover gave Ottawa the last crack, to no avail.

A missed opportunity at the foul line again cost Kaneland in double OT as post player Bailey Crimmins made her first but missed the second free throw to leave the teams tied at 58 with 16 seconds to go, and the score stayed that way entering the third OT. Sophomore guard Morgan Weber’s steal and basket put the Knights up, 62-60, with 3:04 left in triple OT, but the Knights were dry offensively the rest of the session, including a traveling violation with the score tied and 6.6 seconds left. That sent the teams to quadruple OT, knotted at 62.

Ottawa (19-6), the Northern Illinois Big 12 West champion, dominated the fourth OT, sending the Knights (16-9) to the conference crossover defeat.

Kaneland girls coach Ernie Colombe faulted the failed block-out near the end of regulation and his team’s free-throw woes – the Knights missed a pair of front ends of one-andones in the last 30 seconds of regulation – for the loss.

“No one was trying to miss,” Colombe said. “It’s unfortunate.”

Senior forward Ally VanBogaert hit six 3-pointers and led the Knights with 18 points.

Crimmins (14 points, nine rebounds before fouling out in the third OT), Jennifer Weber (12), Morgan Weber (10) and Camri Conley (10) also hit double figures for Kaneland.

“We played our hearts out, so we can’t lay it on effort or anything,” VanBogaert said.

“But the free throws are really killing us. It’s always been something we’ve been struggling with, so that really kind of hurt us tonight.”

Ottawa’s Jordan Hayne corralled a game-high 21 rebounds.

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland senior Connor Fedderly and his teammates waited out an epic, four-overtime struggle between the Kaneland and Ottawa girls teams Tuesday night before the boys squads took their turn.

After the Kaneland girls fell in quadruple OT, 75-69, it looked highly likely more overtime was in store for the remaining crowd as the Kaneland and Ottawa boys were tied at 51 coming out of a timeout with 3 seconds to play.

Mercifully – it was a school night, for goodness sake – Fedderly ended the boys edition of the Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover much more efficiently, and to the Knights’ liking.

Fedderly took the inbounds pass near midcourt and zoomed into the lane, drawing a foul on Ottawa’s Schuyler Parks with

1-tenth of a second to go.

Fedderly made both free throws, lifting the Knights to the 53-51 win.

The lefty guard said he was open either to a quick dish or to shooting himself, depending on how he could navigate the Pirates’ defense. Ottawa, naturally, didn’t care for the final whistle.

“I felt like I got hit pretty hard, but I don’t know, he got a lot of the ball, too,” Fedderly said. “It’s up to the refs, and if they’re going to call a foul, I’m going to make my free throws and win. It’s what seniors do.”

Fedderly was glad to do his part to avoid what would have been the combined fifth OT session of the doubleheader.

“We were all really tired,” Fedderly said of the wait for the girls game to conclude.

“We were sitting here for like 25 minutes, trying not to fall asleep on the bleachers. But we

knew when it was game time, we were ready to go. I’m proud of our guys for coming out and playing hard.”

It wasn’t as upbeat an ending for the Kaneland girls, though their game was no less memorable. The Knights were in strong shape to close out Ottawa multiple times but the Pirates proved resilient, handing the Knights a painful and exhausting defeat.

The end of Connor regulation was Fedderly especially exasperating for the Knights, who led, 48-44, with 25 seconds to play. After Ottawa split a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to three, the Pirates returned to the foul line with 9.9 seconds to go.

Again, Ottawa split the pair, but the Pirates corralled the rebound, and Ottawa’s second attempt at a put-back – a jumper from Jessica Wignes – tied the score at 48 with 4 seconds left, eventually leading to overtime.

In a contest Tuesday night that North Star coach Sean Masoncup called a tuneup for next week’s regionals, North sputtered in the fourth quarter and lost to Glenbard South, 55-52, in a nonconference clash.

“To be honest this week’s games are tuneups and will help us get ready for the regionals,” Masoncup said. “We played hard against a very good team. We had a chance to win and we just didn’t do [what] we normally do. This is going to help us in the long run.”

The North Stars (17-8) held a six-point lead early in the final period. Kyla Helsel’s third 3-pointer of the night gave North a 44-39 lead with 6:43 left in the game.

“To be honest this week’s games are tuneups and will help us get ready for the regionals.”

The Raiders then capitalized on two straight North turnovers that turned into South lays up and an a 54-

49 lead. Helsel (12 points) launched another trey to narrow the score to 54-52.

With less than a minute to play, North was setting up for a last-minute shot when Payton Carli (13 points) stole the ball.

“I think our intensity and defense is definitely a key throughout the game,” Raider coach Julie Fonda said. “We had some quick steals in the fourth quarter, The North Stars were forced to foul. After the Raiders Jenna Brambora (11 points) connected on the second free throw, North was unable to get off a last-second shot as it turned the ball over.

The lead see-sawed between the teams all night.

North held a 19-17 lead after the first quarter. The Raiders retook the lead in the second half and went into the locker room at halftime, 33-31. North pulled ahead in the third quarter and led, 41-37, at the start of the final period.

Nichole Davidson scored 14 points for the North Stars.

Geneva needs to defeat struggling Larkin on Thursday night to clinch an outright Upstate Eight Conference River Division title.

The Vikings have at least shared the perch atop the conference for five consecutive seasons. Among the constants during the past four years of that run: Overcoming injuries and the energetic antics of coach Sarah Meadows.

No question, Meadows has helped steady the Vikings, who enter the Class 4A postseason as the second seed in their own sectional.

“She’s super supportive, and we always know that she has our backs,” senior post Emma Peters said. “She’s always trying to make us better, keep the team morale up.”

A longtime assistant under her predecessor, Gina Nolan, who’s still a fixture at Geneva games, Meadows often makes an impression on the Vikings before they join the starting five or help comprise the bench rotation.

Vanik, this week’s Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Kane County Chronicle Sports Editor Jay Schwab about his big weekend. The following is an edited transcript: Which match were you most satisfied with?

I really liked my last match (against Sycamore’s Michael Ernster, a 6-3 decision). I could have done better with it but I went out pretty strong.

Had you faced him previously?

Yeah, I faced him at our dual against Sycamore earlier that year and I pinned him last time but that was off a cheap little cradle. This one was more I had to work for it.

What did it mean for you to win a regional title?

It meant the world since I got third last year. This one made me a lot happier.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be, and why?

I think it would be Colin Gussman because he’s always there to help me. He’s like a brother to me.

“Tonight, we didn’t execute,” Mooseheart coach Bryan Miller said. “We didn’t rebound very well. Offensively, we couldn’t score and we had trouble passing the basketball.

Best treatment for pancreatitis is to stop drinking Dear Doctor K: I have chronic pancreatitis. Will it help to stop drinking at this point? Or is it too late?

Dear Reader: It is never too late to stop further damage to the pancreas, but it may be too late to reverse damage done in the past.

However, that’s water under the bridge. What you want to do now is stop further damage.

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, a large gland located behind the stomach. (I’ve put an illustration showing the location of the pancreas on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) The inflammation during attacks of pancreatitis can kill some of the cells in the pancreas. It can also lead to scarring and permanent damage.

The pancreas produces digestive enzymes and hormones.

Damage to the cells that produce digestive enzymes can cause problems with digestion of food and the absorption of nutrients in the food.

Because of the digestive problems, people with chronic pancreatitis can lose weight and become malnourished.

Damage to the cells that produce hormones – particularly insulin and other hormones that affect blood sugar levels – can cause diabetes.

The worst symptom of pancre-

Most often, the pain is high in the middle of the abdomen, just above the belly button. The pain often spreads to the middle of the back. Nausea and vomiting often accompany the pain. Attacks are often triggered by meals and by drinking alcoholic beverages. Some people can reduce the pain by sitting up and leaning forward.

Most cases of chronic pancreatitis are caused by ongoing overuse of alcohol. People who continue to drink after one or more episodes of alcohol-related acute pancreatitis are more likely to develop chronic pancreatitis.

Anyone who has had an acute episode should stop drinking entirely.

This will help to lower the chances of developing chronic pancreatitis.

In my experience, people who quit drinking alcohol entirely often have only mild or occasional symptoms. Those who continue to

drink alcohol can have disabling, daily pain, requiring frequent hospitalizations.

Chronic pancreatitis cannot be cured. However, the various problems it causes can be treated.

For milder pain, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) may help. But many people need stronger, narcotic medications. Pain management can be very challenging, and it may help to see a pain specialist.

In rare cases, surgery may be done to relieve pain.

Digestive enzymes can help with problems digesting food and the resulting vitamin deficiencies.

They come in pill or capsule form.

Your doctor also may suggest that you follow a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet that restricts some types of fats.

Diabetes caused by chronic pancreatitis usually requires treatment with insulin.

You can do more to protect yourself from future suffering than your doctor can do for you.

The most important thing is to find help to stop drinking.

Spend time with other friends Dr. Wallace: Sherry is my best friend, and we’ve known each other for most of our lives. We know each other’s deep, dark secrets and we are great companions when we are alone. Even with other girls around we are great pals, but let a guy enter the scene and she acts like I’m not even there!

Let me give you an example. Sherry and I planned a surprise party for a mutual friend’s birthday and it was to be at my house last month.

Motor vehicle accidents are the No. 1 killer of American teens, and the sad fact is that most of these deaths were preventable. To put teen driving into dollars and cents, the National Safety Council estimates the financial cost of “teenage exuberance” to be $10 billion yearly.
