Huskies provide thrills at Hickory Knolls cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As their next sled run demo approached, a group of Siberian huskies began to yelp loudly and even jump straight up in the air.

“They’re just itching to get going,” said Larry Brodersen, second driver of the sled team.

Families on Saturday saw 10 Siberian huskies in action just outside the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. The huskies are part of the Free Spirit Siberian Rescue Sled Demo Team, which travels to various places across Illinois with their owners.

The volunteer team educates people about the Harvard-based rescue group, collects donations and has fun, Brodersen said.

The team came to Kane County as part of the Hickory Knolls Discovery Days events held every February. Events take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday in February at Hickory Knolls, which is at 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles.

Visitors watched the dogs race in teams outside on a snow-covered loop, then they got to pet and see them up close between the races.

The face-to-face encounters are educational because they learn more about the husky’s nature and agility, Brodersen said.

“Some people don’t want to have anything to do with them at first because they look like wolves, but they walk away with a different opinion,” he said.

Brooklyn Curda, 6, of Palatine could not get enough of the huskies – she petted them before and after one of the demo races. She came to the event with her great aunt, Connie Ording, of St. Charles.

Curda’s favorite dog from the team was Sasha, a female black and white Siberian husky. She was one of the lead dogs for Brodersen’s team.

DIGGING IN TO HELP Tri-Cities fire chiefs urge residents to dig out hydrants

T

he unrelenting snow and below-freezing temperatures have created a problem the Tri-Cities fire chiefs hope residents can help reduce: Hydrants buried in snow.

“If citizens could help us, we’d appreciate it,” Batavia Fire Chief Randy Deicke said Monday in a meeting with Geneva Fire Chief Steve Olson and St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet.

In addition to snowfall, hydrants can be covered with snow pushed by plows or thrown by snowblowers.

Locating the hydrants can be difficult even with assistance from maps, Olson said, noting those situations require “hunting around.”

The fire departments have worked to unblock hydrants, the chiefs said, but with about 7,000 hydrants throughout the Tri-Cities, they don’t have the time or resources to make sure each one is clear.

“The cul-de-sacs tend to be brutal,” Schelstreet said, noting the limited space between houses.

The chiefs – whose departments often respond to each other’s emergencies – said they’re working toward a common solution because inaccessible hydrants is a common issue that can lead to minutes lost when fighting fires.

In two words, Schelstreet described what it feels like to arrive at a fire only to have the closest hydrant blocked by snow: “very frustrating.”

Although engines carry a supply of water, Olson stressed that operating time is limited to about three minutes, depending on the hose diameter.

Keeping hydrants visible also is important to prevent them from being damaged by snowplows, Schelstreet said.

Enough space must be available for firefighters to attach and maneuver the hoses, they said.

The chiefs understand some piles might be more than residents can handle. In some cases, they said, heavier equipment from public works is – and has been

– more fit for the job. Residents who need help digging out the hydrants near their home are encouraged to call their fire department, which can pass along the request to

the appropriate city department, the chiefs said.

Holmstad residents helped during center’s evacuation

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Officials at The Holmstad are happy about the kindness shown to those Holmstad residents who were evacuated Friday night from a concert at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre after a smoke alarm went off.

A malfunctioning heater triggered a fire alarm that disrupted the Elgin Symphony Orchestra’s concert that was about to start at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre on Friday night, along with a high school basketball game.

The Batavia Fine Arts Centre is housed in Batavia High School.

“I think most people knew the evacuation was for their safety,” he said. “I didn’t see it affecting their evening, just delaying it. Everybody was appreciative of the efforts of the Batavia Police Department and Batavia Fire Department.”

District 304 OKs all-day kindergarten

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva School Board members Monday voted 6-1 to implement all-day kindergarten starting this fall.

Districtwide kindergarten enrollment will be from 4 to 7 p.m. March 4 at Fabyan Elementary School, Harrison Street Elementary School, Heartland Elementary School, Mill Creek Elementary School, Western Avenue Elementary School and Williamsburg Elementary School. Children entering kindergarten must be 5 years old by Sept. 1.

Parents also will be given the option to enroll their children in half-day kindergarten, which is offered now. Board member David Lamb, who voted “no,” was concerned about the quality of education that children enrolled in half-day kindergarten would receive.

“For parents who opt for half day, will these children receive the same level of curriculum that they do now?”

Lamb asked.

Geneva School District 304 Superintendent Kent Mutchler said the curriculum would “be different, but pretty similar.”

“The whole notion of fullday is that it becomes the default,” Mutchler said. “They may end up missing out on

some things. We will do our best to keep the core areas. I can’t promise you they will get the same curriculum as they are getting now.”

Other board members said they supported going ahead with all-day kindergarten, but want to see costs contained.

“I would like to see how we can absorb as much of this cost as we can,” School Board Vice-President Kelly Nowak said.

A full-day kindergarten program might cost the district about $1.14 million annually, which is $352,650 more than the cost to maintain its current half-day program, including additional services for at-risk students and students with individualized education plans.

There also would be an additional one-time startup cost of $78,000.

Bob McQuillan, a Geneva TaxFACTS founder, also spoke at the meeting and voiced his opposition to moving ahead with all-day kindergarten.

“Look at the research,” McQuillan said, in addressing school board members. “Allday kindergarten does not have long-term benefits.”

He also said the program should be tuition-based rather than having taxpayers foot the bill.

“How far are we away from school districts being free day care?” McQuillan asked.

Project Director Chuck May gave St. Charles aldermen an update on the mall redevelopment at their Planning and Development Committee meeting. May showed a slightly updated site plan and briefly discussed developing the project budget, a review of the mall’s internal systems

and continuing the process for preliminary plan approval.

May heads the local team for The Krausz Companies Inc., the California-based company that purchased the mall property for more than $9.5 million in November.

The company plans to rename the mall The Quad St. Charles and recreate its appearance by fall 2015 to a neighborhood feeling and include patio dining outside.

Work after the planned April groundbreaking will focus on the exterior and then move to the rest of the property, May said.

“This time next year, we’ll

be working inside,” May said.

Second Ward Alderman Art Lemke was one of a few committee members Monday ready with questions for May. Lemke asked about better access to the Charlestowne 18 movie theater, as many customers currently park their cars behind the former Sears site at the mall.

by Sears that faces Route 64, May said.

“Our druthers would be to have people walk through the mall to get to the theater so they pass by the stores,” May said.

Adding tenants will be one of The Krausz Companies’ biggest goals as part of the redevelopment.

The leasing process can be long – the company is working every day on getting letters of intent out and bringing final signed leases as quickly as possible, May said.

It will be some time before the company has some signed leases to announce, May said.

As the redevelopment plans continue, Krausz Companies Inc. representatives said they will begin to make regular appearances before the St. Charles City Council starting in March.

The special meeting featured proposals from John Keister of John Keister & Associates and Alice Calabrese-Berry of Calaberry Consulting.

A longtime headhunter with a passion for libraries, Keister told the trustees he would aim to find candidates who fit Geneva’s specific needs.

His goal is to make the board’s decision difficult, he

said.

“You’ll like them all,” he said of the five to six finalists he would present to the board.

Calabrese-Berry is a former Geneva Library director who helped the Sugar Grove Public Library with a director search a few years ago.

She would talk with the board, department heads and staff to develop the job description, she said. She noted she also would want to study the library’s culture to find a good fit.

“What if we want the culture to change?” trustee Susan Shivers asked, noting the question isn’t necessarily a reflection on what officials want.

“You let me know,” Calabrese-Berry said.

The agenda indicated the board expected to make a decision Monday, but trustees still were interviewing Calabrese-Berry as of press time.

Trustees are searching for a new library director after Matt Teske resigned last month. The board majority accepted his resignation, then appointed him as an assistant director.

The board appointed Marilyn Boria as temporary interim director. It hopes to find a new director by July 1. Boria also served as interim director in Sugar Grove while its board looked for a new director.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Marvin Albert didn’t expect to do well as he pulled back on his bow and aimed the arrow toward the balloon targets.

After all, the 13-year-old Batavia resident didn’t have any archery experience.

“I hit two balloons,” Albert said, beaming with pride. “I was surprised. I thought it would be really hard.”

Twenty-one families participated in Sunday’s open house and fun shoot that was hosted by the Auroraland Archers club at its building at the Fox Valley Park District’s Lippold Park.

Jacob Barth, 13, of Batavia, also had a good day, which he attributed to his past training.

“I got seven of the 12 targets,” Barth said. “I’ve shot before. It’s fun. It takes a lot of control. You have to find your own technique of aiming. It takes a bit of practice.”

Melissa McCann, of Geneva, brought her 10-year-old son, Keilan, to the shoot. She was glad the event was indoors.

“It’s hard to find a place to shoot in the winter,” she said.

“I did pretty well for the first time,” said William Nedrow, 12. “I popped three balloons. It did feel exhilarating that I got to hold a real bow and arrow. I was thinking of making my own bow and arrow.”

Auroraland Archers President Karen Larsen said she was pleased with the turnout for the event.

“It is a great way for people to realize that we are here,”

Larsen said. “It really is a good family sport.”

Auroraland Archers will be looking for a new home.

The Fox Valley Park District plans to tear down its building at Lippold Park because it has fallen in disrepair. The club plans to have another fun

shoot in May before it has to vacate the building, Larsen said. It is negotiating to have an outdoor range at Mooseheart this summer, she said.

GENEVA – After nine years in business, Gibby’s Wine Den will close later this month because its owners have moved out of the area.

Jan and Randy Gibson, who operate Gibby’s Wine Den, moved in December to Tennessee after Randy Gibson accepted a position with an architectural engineering firm there. He has been with the firm since June.

“We’ve been trying to sell the business for six months, but we have not been successful,” said Jan Gibson, who has been commuting between Tennessee and the store during the transition.

All around the world, governments are devising creative ways to torment American technology companies. It started last year after leaks revealed that the U.S. government basically uses services such as Google and Facebook as arms of the surveillance state. In response, some countries – including Germany, Brazil and now France – have toyed with the idea of forcing Internet companies to route traffic or store data locally.

As public policy, this is inept both technologically and economically. As symbolism, it illustrates the damage that overly ambitious espionage can cause – and reinforces, yet again, how insecure the foundations of the digital marketplace really are.

Since the intelligence contractor Edward Snowden began exposing surveillance programs by the National Security Agency last June, trust in U.S. technology companies has plummeted overseas. In some cases sales have slowed. And foreign regulators have been licking their chops in anticipation of a crackdown. Estimates of the cost to these companies have ranged from $21.5 billion to

$180 billion by 2016.

Now, more than a dozen governments are considering laws to require Internet companies to store information collected on their citizens at onshore data centers. This is a bad idea for all the usual reasons protectionism is a bad idea.

It will obstruct the free flow of trade (in this case, bits of data), inhibit innovation, increase inefficiency, raise business costs and slow economic growth. If adopted widely, it could threaten the trust and openness the Internet is built on. Not to mention the logistical inanities it will cause.

One thing this idea will not do – offer much protection from spying. Quite the opposite. The NSA, under authorities granted by Executive Order 12333, has extremely broad latitude to conduct intelligence gathering outside the U.S., without oversight from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. And U.S. technology companies would still be required to turn over data on specific users at the government’s request, regardless of where they store it.

Local data storage won’t offer a practical impediment to spying either.

The NSA has shown itself quite capable of infiltrating

foreign communications companies, and local spy agencies would undoubtedly find it very convenient to have all their citizens’ data in one place. (The French government, it should be noted, is no slouch when it comes to surveilling its citizens’ digital habits.)

All of which suggests that the real reason governments want to require local data storage is to promote local businesses. Or, more perniciously, to control information a little more tightly within their borders.

Both are provincial bureaucratic urges that should be resisted. And both should be considered more collateral damage of the NSA’s poor cost-benefit calculations.

This very bad idea does, however, have the virtue of illustrating a deeper problem.

Many technology companies have based their businesses on collecting precisely the kind of user information that the spies are after.

The architecture of the Internet makes sharing that information effortless, but protecting it effectively impossible. That dichotomy won’t go away. In fact, it’s going to define your life, more and more, every day.

Squad looking to turn the corner approaching regionals

ATAVIA – The Batavia boys basketball team hasn’t won in almost a month and the season record isn’t pretty, but a case can be made that the Bulldogs are playing their best ball at the right time of year.

Despite home losses Friday against St. Charles North and Saturday against St. Joseph, the Bulldogs (6-15) made it clear over the weekend that their resolve to make progress remains in full effect.

Batavia was especially impressive in its Jim & Sylvia Roberts Night of Hoops clash with St. Joseph on Saturday night, drawing within one point of the perennial power Chargers in the closing minutes before falling, 58-51.

“The underdogs that we were in that game, to come out and put on a show like that was a lot of fun,” Batavia senior guard Micah Coffey said.

Coffey added that “now we just take the next step to closing out those games.”

Doing so has proven an uphill battle for Batavia this winter, but the Bulldogs are at least putting themselves in position after a midseason lull in which Batavia was often staring down double-digit deficits in the fourth quarter.

The night before the St. Joe game, Batavia trailed another formidable opponent, St. Charles North, by only two points with less than 3 minutes to play before losing, 48-42.

Batavia seemed to make the most of two straight weeks of practice time during which a game in Rock Island was postponed by weather.

“Teams that improve have a chance to do something great this time of year,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said.

“We are settling into an identity. We didn’t rebound well [against St. Joe] but defensively we were in the right spots.

We were good on the ball. [St. Joe] made some plays.”

Batavia has lost six straight games since earning its lone conference victory, a 23-point win Jan. 11 at Streamwood. Still, the St. Charles North and St. Joe games suggested a late-season breakthrough isn’t farfetched.

A potentially peaking frontcourt might be the best cause for Bulldogs optimism.

Senior forward Tucker Knox is coming on strong, most recently with a 13-point performance against St. Joe that included a pair of threepoint plays on determined moves to the basket.

“I’m just gaining confidence,” Knox said. “Just scoring points in games and practice and working on stuff.

The ball’s just starting to fall for me.”

Batavia also welcomed back junior forward Chasen Peez against St. Joe. Peez saw limited time off the bench after missing almost a month with a stress reaction in his back. Peez leads the team in scoring (13.3 points a game) and rebounding (6.9 a game).

If he returns to form, it could go a long way toward fortifying Batavia on the glass, which has been among the team’s main vulnerabilities.

One of the Bulldogs’ four remaining regular season games is against Streamwood, and another win over the Sabres would ensure Batavia does not finish last in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. Beyond that, the Bulldogs are quick to note that regular season records don’t mean much when it

comes to the postseason, and Batavia is working toward becoming a team that can pull a surprise or two come regionals.

“I think we can play with anyone,” Knox said. “We’re there. We have talent. We’ve just got to finish games, and we’ve got to rebound. That’s the biggest thing that’s holding us back right now.”

Remaining upbeat amid mounting losses is difficult but Nazos has praised the Bulldogs’ leadership despite their struggles.

“We’ve got players in our locker room,” Micah Coffey said. “We’ve got guys who love the game of basketball and want to help us succeed, and we’ve got a coach we want to play for.

“It’s easier for me, because I’ve got a little brother [Canaan] worth playing for and a little brother I’m trying to help and help get to the next level. But for the rest of these guys, it’s just love of the game. They love to hit the floor every day and get to work.”

‘Homecoming’ for Stevenson’s Johnson While Stevenson boasts a highly touted 1-2 punch in Jalen Brunson and Connon Cashaw, it was Matthew Johnson’s participation in the Night of Hoops quadrupleheader Saturday that most excited many folks in host Batavia’s program.

Johnson, a junior guard for the Patriots and the team’s third leading scorer, transferred to Stevenson from Batavia in the aftermath of his mother’s death from cancer in August 2012.

Johnson was a popular student and athlete at Batavia as a freshman and sophomore, and projected to be a key component in the Bulldogs’ basketball and football programs.

Johnson played well in Stevenson’s win against Benet on Saturday, and has helped make the Patriots one of the state’s elite teams this season.

“That kid’s a special kid, on and off the court,” Batavia senior Micah Coffey said.

“He’s a heck of a man for the stuff that he’s been through.

He’s a heck of a player, as you can see, on the floor.”

Batavia second-year coach Jim Nazos said a knee injury for Johnson prevented him from seeing much of Johnson’s game during their overlapping time at Batavia except for one or two open-gym sessions.

Kudos to Batavia for continuing to bring some great competition in for Night of Hoops.

For local fans to get a look at elite teams like Stevenson, West Aurora, Limestone and Benet should not be taken for granted, and adding Mooseheart this year was a nice touch.

Here’s hoping the event stays on such solid ground for many more years to come, and some of the event’s magic rubs off on Kaneland with the Knights’ new shootout that’s set to debut.

Mooseheart, Bulldogs each drop tight games

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Mooseheart boys basketball team showed it was worthy of its invitation to the prestigious Jim & Sylvia Roberts Night of Hoops showcase, taking a Class 3A state power down to the final minute.

The Ramblers, however, saw their 18-game winning streak snapped, falling to Bartonville Limestone, 63-58.

Mooseheart standout Makur Puou just missed tying the game in the late stages, but his shot rolled in and out.

Despite the loss, the Ramblers made it clear how tough they’ll be to deal with when the 1A postseason begins later this month.

“I don’t know if there’s a team in 1A that’s as talented as they are, a 3A team like them,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said. “But, gosh darn it, we were right there. We ran what we wanted to run, we got the ball to Mak, we had a nice layup to tie it up and we missed it. That’s basketball … we did everything right on

that play. He used the backboard, nice cut, we screened for him, and he missed the shot.”

St. Joseph 58, Batavia 51: Underdog Batavia brought its gymnasium to life in the fourth quarter against St. Joe, rallying to within one point, but the Bulldogs could come no closer after Canaan Coffey’s 3-pointer brought the Bulldogs within one, 52-51, with 1:05 to play.

Fittingly, an offensive rebound for St. Joe burned Batavia as Chargers big man Nick Rakocevic tipped in Jordan Ash’s miss and was fouled with 45 seconds to go.

He missed the free throw, but St. Joe led, 54-51, and Canaan Coffey’s attempt to tie it with 32 seconds to play rolled out.

The 6-foot-9 Rackocevic, in particular, dominated on the boards. The sophomore had 14 rebounds to go with his 19 points.

Batavia (6-15) got 16 points from Micah Coffey, including a 3-pointer that brought the Bulldogs within two, 50-48, with 1:49 to play.

Vikings earn a share of Upstate Eight River title

STREAMWOOD – The Batavia girls basketball team survived a scare from host Streamwood on Saturday to clinch a share of the Upstate Eight Conference River title, knocking off the Sabres, 46-45.

The gamed ended in odd fashion as Streamwood failed to foul to stop the clock, allowing Batavia to run the last “10 to 15 seconds” off the clock, according to Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen.

Batavia (18-8, 10-2 UEC River) shares the conference title with Geneva, which defeated St. Charles North on Saturday night to earn its piece of the conference.

Batavia won both head-to-head games with Geneva and will host UEC Valley champion Neuqua Valley on Friday in the regular season-ending conference crossovers, Jensen said.

The Vikings shared for the UEC River title despite losing both games against Batavia, which had control of the conference but dropped late-season games to St. Charles East and North.

North was coming off a high with one of its bigger wins in recent memory after upsetting Batavia on Thursday, but no player scored in double-figures in the loss.

Nichole Davidson, who scored 24 points in the previous meeting between the two schools, was held to eight points on the night.

ST. CHARLES – The Geneva girls basketball team is used to winning. The Vikings had captured five straight conference championships and were giftwrapped an opportunity for a sixth after conference-leading Batavia was upset by St. Charles North on Thursday night.

With North on a high after the big win over Batavia, Saturday night’s contest figured to be a competitive game, but Geneva used its superior size and quickness to blitz the host North Stars, 58-35. The win gives the Vikings a share of the Upstate Eight Conference River crown with Batavia, which downed Streamwood on Saturday to close the conference season.

A huge first half from Janie McCloughan helped Geneva race to a 40-13 lead at the break as the Vikings (19-5, 10-2 UEC River) easily coasted to the win.

The junior forward scored 20 of her game-high 24 points in the opening half and sat out most of the second half for the Vikings.

“When we make good passes we always seem to get layups, and that’s something we definitely emphasize,” McCloughan said. “We needed this win to boost our confidence; it was a good game to go into the postseason for us.”

McCloughan said she never scored 20 points in a half before, but was given the opportunity by the Vikings’ propensity to break North’s press. At one point in the second quarter, McCloughan scored four straight baskets – all on layups – that helped the Vikings race out to a 33-9 lead with 3:45 to go.

The last layup came on a play in which the ball only touched the floor twice, with McCloughan taking a feed from Sidney Santos and banking the ball in.

The personal 8-0 run forced a timeout and earned Geneva a standing ovation from the Vikings’ faithful.

East wrestling leads Tri-Cities contingent

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com SOUTH ELGIN – Isaiah Vela spent all of 36 seconds on the mat Saturday on his way to winning a regional wrestling championship.

The St. Charles East 138-pounder was one of four Saints to win titles at the Class 3A South Elgin Regional, helping East to a second-place finish in the team standings behind Glenbard North, which crowned eight champions.

Joining Vela atop the podium for the Saints were Jake Mende (145 pounds), Keone Derain (152) and Ramon Lopez (160).

Vela (37-3) opened his day by pinning Elgin sophomore Ariel Torres (1-10) in six seconds, breaking Vela’s own school record for fastest fall by one second.

“I just went to an underhook and hip tossed him,” Vela said.

“I threw him right to his back.”

Vela pinned Bartlett’s Alec Delgado (21-11) in 30 seconds in the semifinals and was awarded the championship when Glenbard North’s Phil Partipilo defaulted becasue of an injury. Vela had wrestled Partipilo twice earlier in the season and defeated him both times.

Vela said he won’t complain about an easy day.

work a little harder for their titles. Mende (30-7) held off a third-period challenge from Geneva’s Mike Huck (25-14) in the 145-pound final for a 9-5 decision.

“I’ve wrestled Mike Huck a couple times, recently at conference,” Mende said. “It was a little bit closer match at conference. Coming into this, I knew I’d face him again, and I went out there strong and wrestled a good match.”

Derain (38-4) ran up a 7-0 lead after one period in his title bout with Glenbard North’s Anthony DiPrima (12-16) before pinning him 48 seconds into the second period.

Derain had three pins on the day, as did Lopez (33-7), who pinned Tom Czernek (11-12) of Glenbard North 2:30 into their title match.

Glenbard North won the first five title matches of the night en route to 263.5 points.

The Saints wound up with 182 points, 65 more than thirdplace Geneva.

East sophomore Anthony Rubino (32-7) lost a tough 11-8 decision to Glenbard North’s Austin Gomez (37-2) in the 113-pound final, and the Saints’ Ryan Valesh (29-11) was defeated by Panther senior Jared Cortez (37-2) in the 132-pound championship match by technical fall. They will advance

Myhre teamed up with Sherman, John Pretet and Stephen Hutchinson to finish third in the 400-yrd freestyle relay. They completed the race in 3:17.69.

North’s Michael Burke took third place in the diving competition with a score of 294.95.

“I thought we definitely started coming out of our shell a little bit today,” Rooney said about his squad that lost 12 members to graduation last year. “I’m very positive and optimistic about what they put into the meet.”

The Saints’ Will Shanel repeated as the 500 freestyle champion. His time of 4:47.63 bested last year’s winning time of 4:49.20. The senior also won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:57.10.

ST. CHARLES – The Metea Valley boys swimming team ended St. Charles North’s reign as king of the poll of the Upstate Eight Conference on Saturday.

The Mustangs won the conference meet, held at North, snapping the North Stars’ three-year streak as conference champions.

North finished in fourth place with 220 points behind Metea Valley (255), Waubonsie Valley (239) and Neuqua Valley (222). St. Charles East finished fifth (165) in the nineteam field. The West Chicago/ Batavia co-op Team (93) came in seventh.

“We are defending conference champs – hats off to Metea for winning their first one ever,” North coach Rob Rooney said. “We thought we had a shot at it there through the [200-yard free] relay and then they kind of took the wind of out our sails right there.”

Rooney was pleased with his team’s effort despite the fourth-place finish.

“We just had a phenomenal meet for where we have been all year long and where we are at right now,” Rooney said.

“These kids have been doing everything I have been asking them to do.”

North’s Joe Myhre took first place in two individual events. The sophomore won the 200 freestyle event with a time of 1:44.62 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.95.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM The history of valentines can be traced back to St. Valentine, who died a martyr. A feast was named for him by the Catholic Church in the year 496. Other historical or legendary sources to the holiday mention two other men named Valentine, a suggestion that the holiday descended from a Roman fertility fest, and references to the Duke of Orleans’ letter in the 15th century that is considered the first valentine. Then in the 14th century, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the first mention of love and Valentine’s Day. The oldest surviving valentine dates from 1477. Now skip forward to the modern holiday and verifiable facts. By 1797, valentine cards were being homemade of paper, ribbons and lace. In 1874, Esther Howland (1824-1904) of Worcester, Mass., was the first American to make valentines to sell commercially. Soon valentines - some of them comic -were being mass-produced by companies in the style of the day, although handmade folk art cards remained popular. Very lacey, fancy valentines were favored by the 1880s. “Vinegar Valentines” with insulting verses, also known as “Penny Dreadfuls,” were popular by 1900. And from 1900 to 1930, postcards, pop-ups and mechanical valentines were fashionable. The 1930s to 1980s saw sets of printed cards to be cut out and given to each child in a classroom. And by 1975, there were cards that could play music. Save any clever cards you get this year and start a collection of old ones. Good examples still can be found. *** Q: I inherited my grandmother’s doll-size rocking chair, which has been in our family for years.

It’s made of a dark wood and is just 16 inches high. The back and seat are made of one continuous piece of thin wood attached to the frame with brass tacks. The back has a punchedhole design that includes the word “Pet” in capital letters and the letter “Y.” The seat has a punched square with a star in a circle inside it. Can you tell me

A: Your chair was made by Gardner & Co., which was founded in Clarksville, N.J., in 1863.

Gardner was granted several patents for improvements to chair seats and frames. Chairs with perforated plywood seats were made in full size, child size and doll size. The “Pet” chair also was made in a non-rocking version. The company was in business until about 1888, when the factory burned down. Your chair was made between 1871 and 1888. The value of your doll-size chair is $100 to $125.

Q: Back in the early 1940s, my in-laws received two prints of hummingbirds as a wedding gift.

They left the prints to us and I would like to learn more about them. The words on the back of each print are in French, but I can translate some of the words.

They include the names of the pictured birds (one is a bearded hummingbird and the other has a forked tail) and the name of the publisher, Arthus-Bertrand. What can you tell us about the prints?

A: Arthus-Bertrand, which still is in business in Paris, was founded by Claude ArthusBertrand in 1803. Today it sells all sorts of jewelry, medals and decorations. Back in the early 1830s, however, Arthus-Bertrand published a book titled “The Natural History of Hummingbirds,”

by Rene Primevere Lesson, a French ornithologist and naturalist. The book included engraved prints of hummingbirds. The book’s prints are identified on the bottom of each page, not on the back like your prints. So it is likely your prints are later copies of the prints in the book.

This inexpensive valentine was made in the 1920s. The words and the clothing are clues to its date. It is printed on a thin piece of paper 6 1/2 by 5 inches, not a size that would fit in today’s standard envelope.

*** Q: I have a Simmons Wonder ice-cream maker that has been in my family for years. It makes one cup of ice cream. In 1924, when my mother was 6 years old, she was run over by a Model T and was in a body cast for a few weeks. During her recovery, her grandmother made ice cream for her in this ice-cream maker. Can you tell me anything about it?

A: Edward Simmons was a hardware salesman who started his own wholesale hardware company in St. Louis in 1872.

‘RoboCop’ is a worthy remake

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Do you ever get that sinking feeling when a favorite film from your past is about to be released as a brand-new package, as a – gulp – remake? My antennae went shooting up even further when I learned that the remake of “RoboCop” was being assigned a PG-13 rating. Really? A reboot of the gruesomely violent, properly R-rated 1987 Paul Verhoeven film is getting a soft PG-13? Truth be told, the rating fits. The original film was far harder to take, at least in the violence department, than this one.

But without many more comparisons to that classic piece of corn (which I’ve probably seen 20 times), I’m happy to report that this one, with better visuals, better acting, better writing and all sorts of well-crafted political, philosophical and sociological questions tossed into the mix, is a rarity – a remake that, for the most part, gets it right.

Verhoeven’s film was constantly shocking in its bloodshed (a bullet to the

brain of the good guy, a terrific decapitation of a bad guy who is first bathed in toxic waste) and often hilarious in its characterizations (most of the villains were braying, goofy maniacs who killed for a thrill), but Brazilian action director Jose Padilha and first-time scripter Joshua Zetumer give us a film that maintains a high quotient of violence, mostly through excessive firepower rather than close-up brutality, and they pretty much strip it clean of humor.

Oh, we’ve got Samuel L. Jackson as a fast-talking, rabble-rousing, conservative TV host, overplaying it for all it’s worth, as only he can get away with. But the film is short, rather than long, on one-liners (although I counted three variations of iconic lines from the original). And it reaches high points of emotionalism in a couple of characters: Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), the cop who’s in the wrong place at the wrong time, crosses the wrong people, and ends up, through the magic of technology, literally starting life over as RoboCop; and Dr. Norton (Gary Oldman), the sci-

entist who develops and nurtures our hero, but ends up, kind of like Victor Frankenstein, not quite sure what he’s actually created.

For those who like their big, bad, machine gun-toting robots, there are ED-209s and EM-208s aplenty, who act rather than think. For fans of evil empire-like corporations, there’s OmniCorp, and its CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton in fine form), and his grim, determined weapons expert Rick Mattox (Jackie Earle Haley, best role in the film). And if you like your satire with a dark but savvy edge, take note that the script has this black-suited, only slightly futuristic RoboCop “made in China.”

Marred only by a confusing discussion of the “illusion of free will” – Is he a man who’s also a machine or a machine who’s also a man? – and too much time spent on Murphy’s wife and son (Abbie Cornish, John Paul Ruttan), the film’s a success in almost every other area. This “RoboCop” is no RoboCopy of the original.

Best friend’s past abuse haunts gatherings Teen’s girlfriend says Dear Abby: My best friend of 20 years, “Claire,” has suffered bouts of depression ever since I have known her. She recently confided to me that her brother had repeatedly sexually abused her as a child.

When she went to her mother for help, her mother told her she needed to “thank God that it was happening because it would make her a stronger person.” Her mother is dead now, but her father is still alive. I am furious at him for allowing the abuse to happen under his roof.

Abby, the family acts like it never happened! Claire invites her dad to events we plan together like birthdays. How do I attend knowing what I know? I don’t want to sit across a table from him.

My husband is an abuse survivor and feels even more strongly than I do. It has made get-togethers miserable for us. Should we just smile and pretend we don’t know because we can’t fight my best friend’s fight for her? How do we get over the anger? – Confused In Oklahoma Dear Confused: Years ago, someone explained to me that depression is anger turned inward.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Your friend is enduring these bouts of depression because she was never allowed to express her anger where it belonged – at her brother and her mother. Whether the mother ever told her husband what was going on, or whether it was the continuation of a long family tradition of sexual abuse, is something we don’t know. But if you haven’t suggested to Claire that she could benefit from counseling, you should.

As to you and your husband participating in these family gatherings, my advice is to stop doing it. Celebrate special occasions with your friend right before or after these occasions; many people have pre- or post-birthday get-togethers, and that’s what I recommend in a case like this.

Dear Abby: I recently became involved with a longtime female friend of mine when she was in town. I have always loved “Miranda” as a friend, but now I also feel attracted to her as a potential

perfect match.

The problem is she lives far away. We keep in touch almost daily. I love that, but it makes me miss her, and I end up thinking about her all day, which doesn’t help. She says she has feelings for me, too, but “the timing isn’t in our favor.”

Lasik surgery can offer dramatic improvements in vision Dear Doctor K: I’ve just scheduled LASIK surgery. Can you explain what will happen during the procedure?

Dear Reader: To understand LASIK surgery, you first need to know a few things about the eye and what it does. Basically, your eye is like a camera. It focuses the light coming into it to make a sharp image. That image then is captured on a kind of film (or, in digital cameras, a sensor).

The parts of the eye that focus the image are primarily the cornea and the lens. The part that captures the image is the retina, a flat layer of nerve cells at the back of the eye. The cells of the retina then send the image to the back of the brain – the part that allows us to see and interpret the images.

During LASIK surgery, your doctor uses a laser to reshape your cornea. The cornea is the clear, round “window” of tissue that allows light to enter the front of the eye. By reshaping the cornea, the surgeon adjusts the focus of light on the retina. LASIK can improve vision in people who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism.

You will meet with your sur-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff geon and his or her team before your procedure. During this exam, the team will take precise measurements of your eyes, including the shape and thickness of your cornea.

On the day of your procedure, your doctor may give you a mild sedative to help you relax. You will lie down in a reclining chair.

You’ll be given numbing eye drops so you will not feel pain or discomfort. An instrument will be positioned to keep your eyelids open, and a ringlike suction device will be placed on the front of your eyes to hold your cornea in place.

The surgeon will use a delicate instrument to slice a tiny, hinged flap of tissue from the front of your cornea. You will not see or feel the instrument cutting your cornea. The surgeon will remove the suction ring from your eye and fold back the hinged flap of cornea.

At this point, the surgeon

will use the laser to reshape the underlying protein fibers of your cornea. This reshaping is based on the precise measurements made during your pre-surgery exam. Finally, the doctor will reposition the hinged flap of cornea. No stitches are necessary.

LASIK is an outpatient procedure; it generally takes 10 to 15 minutes for each eye. Some surgeons work on both eyes at one sitting, while others operate on only one eye per sitting.

The cornea heals quickly. You may notice dramatic improvements in vision almost immediately following your surgery.

By the way, I’ll bet you’re eager to know the full medical name for which LASIK is the abbreviation. It’s: Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis. If you already knew that, you’re smarter than I am. I had to look it up.

This week, we are looking at counting – arguably the most important factor for success at the game. And when you are on defense, you will sometimes need partner to give you a count signal so that you can work out how many cards declarer has in the suit – as in this deal.

In three no-trump, declarer starts with only five top tricks: three spades and two diamonds.

He needs to get the rounded suits going. So, after taking the first trick with his spade king, he leads the club king.

East wants to take his club ace when South is playing his last club. So West must give a count signal. Since West has an even number of clubs, he should go high-low, playing first the five (or eight, but I like second-highest from four), then the two. This will tell East to take the second club trick. (If West has only two clubs, South has four and holding up twice would not help.)

East leads back his second spade to declarer’s ace. South, needing to get into the dummy, leads the heart king. West plays his nine, starting a high-low with a doubleton. East, aware of what is happening, holds up his ace.

South will probably try a low heart to dummy’s queen, but East wins with his ace and shifts to the diamond jack (or leads back the heart 10), and the contract is dead.

Finally, note that at trick one, East should play his spade three, a discouraging signal denying help in spades. But a defender does not signal attitude when declarer leads a suit (except perhaps to play the top of touching honors).
