Kaneland school board tackles a long list of financial issues

SUGAR GROVE – As Kaneland’s school board tackled a long list of agenda items at Monday night’s meeting, board member Ryan Kerry expressed frustration that School District 302 could not afford some of the items approved.

He noted some of the items were necessary, in particular an item for roof repairs for a section of Kaneland High School, but he voted against the capital expenditures that included that item.

“How can you argue with fixing a roof?” Kerry asked. “You can’t. But where is the money coming from?

We have to draw a line somewhere.”

Fellow board members assured him he was heard, but some argued that the items were necessary. Throughout the night, board members grappled with a potential $900,000 deficit to the 2016-17 budget and the potential of adding to it. However, there were some who stressed the district has money available in its fund balance, which includes available money the district has saved, to address such issues.

Teresa Witt, the board’s president, said she supported using money from the fund balance for one-time expenditures. Others were more flexible, depending on the issue. Two board members – Veronica Bruhl and Peter Lopatin – were not at Monday’s meeting.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla Among the action the board took Monday night: • By a 4-1 vote, the board OK’d a renewal of its contract with GCA, the district’s custodial vendor.

The cost, $1,453,541.34, is 3 percent more than last year’s, according to district documents. Last year, the board renewed the contract without a 3 percent increase. The cost for this renewal, for the 2016-17 school year, is about $42,000 more than what was approved for the current school year.

• By a 3-2 vote, the board approved about $1.2 million in capital expenditures. Among the items were the roof repairs at the high school, sealcoating at three schools, classroom furniture replacement at the high school and a telephone system replacement at the high school. According to district documents, about $700,000 would be used from the fund balance. It also covers about $60,000 for repairs of the tennis courts at the high school. Kerry and Pedro Rivas voted against it.

NORTH AURORA – North Aurora police issued an advisory of a possible attempted luring of a child just before 4 p.m. Tuesday near Dee Road and Linn Court.

A 10-year-old boy was walking when someone said, “Come here!” according to the advisory. The boy saw a person wearing a brown hoodie with the hood pulled up, black sweatpants and shoes that had red or pink in them, according to the advisory.

The boy could not tell what race or gender the person was, according to the advisory. The boy said “no” and ran home, and the suspect made no attempt to grab or follow him, according to the advisory.

Police issued the advisory message out of caution, even though it is possible there was no criminal intent. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call North Aurora police at 630-897-8705.

District officials said the cost to the district, $12,575, could be absorbed in this year’s budget. The total proposal of $26,997.44 included help from boosters and donations of labor.

• A 3-2 vote defeated a motion to increase and create stipends for those who work with clubs, including cheerleading, band and the Gay Straight Alliance. The cost would have been about $37,000. Krauspe and Pavlak voted for it; Witt, Rivas and Kerry voted against.

• A 3-2 vote OK’d coaching positions that had been approved but not funded. Tasks had been done by people on a volunteer basis. Rivas, Krauspe and Pavlak voted for it; Kerry and Witt voted against. Witt said she couldn’t back this item or the one involving stipends because they were not one-time payments.

The cost will range from $28,740 to $43,911, depending on who fills the roles.

The board’s next meeting is set for Feb. 29.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that all offices and facilities that are open Monday to Friday will be closed from Feb. 12 to 15, while facilities open Tuesday to Saturday will be closed from Feb. 13 to 16, in observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and Presidents Day. All Monday-through-Friday facilities will be open for business Tuesday, Feb. 16, and Tuesday-through-Saturday facilities will open Feb. 17. People can visit the Secretary of State’s website, www.cyberdriveillinois.com, to locate the nearest facility and the hours of operation. Also drivers can change an address, register to become an organ and tissue donor or renew license plate stickers online.

Kane zoning panel votes 4-3 vs. addiction treatment center

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A divided Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals voted 4-3 Tuesday against approval of a special use for a proposed alcohol and drug treatment center near Campton Hills.

Zoning board members Harold Bowen, Robert Moga, Gerald Regan and Daniel Heinrich voted against the recommendation, while Chairman Joseph White and members Penny Cameron, Roxanne Stover voted for it.

About 60 members of the public who opposed the proposal shouted and cheered when the zoning board majority voted against it.

in a farming district as a special use.

Regan said the Maxxam proposal was “so fragmented, not one person in this room could tell how they would operate this facility.”

Moga told how he had surgery at a Chicago hospital and wandered onto a floor where alcoholics and drug addicts were being treated.

“It looked like a man-overboard drill,” Moga said. “I do not want to be re-elected to this board if we approve this. This is so disgusting to me … because I saw a zoo.”

Keith Brown, one of Maxxam’s attorneys, said those who voted against the application committed “a clear violation of the Fair Housing Act and is a prima facie example of discrimination against persons suffering from a disability due to alcoholism and drug use.”

The zoning board’s recommendation will go to the Kane County Development Committee on March 8.

LOCAL NEWS Backyard chickens workshop Feb. 13 at Garfield Farm Museum

CAMPTON HILLS – At 1 p.m. Feb. 13, Garfield Farm Museum will host an afternoon session on raising a small flock of backyard chickens. The workshop will serve as a basic introduction to starting one’s own flock.

Dave Bauer, the special-projects manager and director of the chicken breeding program, will provide instruction, along with museum volunteer Samira Bamberger. Attendees will learn about chicken care, breed selection, incubation choices and more. The lecture will cover a brief history of chickens, egg collection and hands-on participation to learn how to handle birds.

There is a $6 donation for the class.

St. Charles School District 303 facing questions about future

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – While the St. Charles school board’s facilities decision last month settled the matter of whether Lincoln and Wasco elementary schools will close – they won’t – the vote prompted new questions about the district’s middle schools.

With its vote, the St. Charles School District 303 Board directed the administration to prepare plans for increasing the capacity of Thompson Middle School and bring the building up to contemporary standards.

Whether that will lead to renovations at Thompson or the construction of a new middle school remains unknown.

But, if the board wants to place a referendum on the November ballot, a direction will have to emerge in the next six months. The referendum deadline is in August, Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

Parent Lora Vitek, who was among those rallying to save Lincoln Elementary School, wrote in an email that she was pleased everyone seemed to understand how losing the downtown elementary school would affect the city and downtown business community.

Of the direction the district is now taking, she agreed that the middle school issue needs to be addressed. She described it as a matter affecting everyone in the District 303 community, regardless of whether they have or had children in the schools.

“We have to maintain quality middle schools if we want to remain a premier district,” Vitek wrote. “My hope is that everyone – D-303 residents – do their homework before jumping to conclusions on whether or not property tax will go up and before formulating an opinion on the actual need for new schools or school closures. It takes a lot of time and effort to understand the issues.”

Community members might get to help weigh in on decisions the district faces before deciding on a referendum.

Those decisions include whether to build a new middle school and, if so, whether it would be on Seventh Street or the district-owned property along Silver Glen Road.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – With drugs continuing to present challenges in Kane County, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon commended a nationwide pharmacy Tuesday for its new efforts to combat drug abuse.

Walgreens announced plans Tuesday to install medication disposal kiosks in more than 500 drugstores in 39 states, including Illinois.

It also intends to make naloxone available without a prescription at its pharmacies, including those in Illinois.

Naloxone is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, such as heroin.

“Walgreens pharmacists play an important role in counseling patients on the safe use of their medications, and now we are leading the way in retail pharmacy’s fight against prescription drug abuse,” Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations, stated in a news release.

In his monthly meeting with reporters, McMahon said the ongoing drug issue – along with mental health and domestic violence – is among the “significant challenges” facing his office.

Batavia has gotten a lot of great press lately. Recent reports put Batavia in the Top 10 happiest places in Illinois, as well as one of the top cities to raise a family. And, in July, the Batavia Park District racked up more wins for residents.

More than 4,000 parks and recreation professionals from across the state convened at the Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s annual conference Jan. 28 through 30 in Chicago. The conference – which featured more than 150 education workshops – is the premier state conference for parks and recreation, forest preserves and conservation agencies in Illinois.

The IAPD/IPRA annual conference also is an ideal time to recognize agencies and individuals who go above and beyond and who truly make a difference in the field. This year, Batavia truly represented. On Jan. 29, in front of nearly 2,000 professionals, Park Board Commissioner Kevin Riley received the IAPD Rising Star Award.

The award recognizes an up-and-coming board member who demonstrates exemplary performance in duties and responsibilities as a board member.

Riley truly was honored to receive the award.

“I have been fortunate to have been involved with many terrific things in my life, and I would put the award in the top five,” Riley said. “The Rising Star Award is so special because district staff took time to submit an application on my behalf, and it’s always great to be recognized for doing something you love.”

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – City officials know the St. Charles Police Department can’t remain in its existing facility, in its current condition, forever.

With a conditions report and studies suggesting the building has deficiencies, Public Works Director Peter Suhr said it would be “irresponsible” to keep the structure as is.

But where the police department might end up is yet unknown.

“We are proceeding with concepts for a totally new police station and want to further evaluate other sites within the community away from our existing facility,” Police Chief James Keegan wrote in an email after a meeting in which aldermen provided feedback on several options.

The options presented Feb. 1 included three choices that would keep the station at its downtown site, while another would involve building a new facility elsewhere.

The potential cost ranged from a $6.2 million remodel of the existing building to a nearly $22 million plan of demolishing the entire existing facility and building a new station in its place.

Private well testing program offered by water district

ST. CHARLES – The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District is sponsoring a water testing program to test private wells for nitrates, various pesticides and metals. Three levels of tests are available. A $45 test kit checks water samples for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, chloride, sulfate, soluble phosphorus, silica and specific conductivity. A pesticide screen for $80 will indicate the presence of triazine herbicides and Lasso, Dual or Harness. The metals test is $90 and tests for 23 different metals. Water test kits are available through Feb. 19 from the Soil and Water Conservation District, 2315 Dean St., St. Charles, or the Kane County Farm Bureau, 2N710 Randall Road, St. Charles. Kits must be purchased upon pickup, and results will be sent to the purchaser. Heidelburg College Water Quality Laboratory in Tiffin, Ohio, will perform the water testing. Keegan wrote that the department will evaluate the public works complex, but no location “is off the table.”

ST. CHARLES – Two clients of a tax preparation office in St. Charles have nabbed $1,000 each in a nationwide contest.

On Jan. 16, H&R Block – which bills itself as the world’s largest tax services provider – began awarding 1,000 people with $1,000 every day as part of a promotion that ends Feb. 15.

Its office at 1860 W. Main St. has produced two of the eventual 32,000 winners, office manager Adam Gray wrote in an email.

The first winner, Pamela Stout,

planned to spend her prize on a car repair and a veterinarian visit for her cat, which was suffering from a sore leg, Gray wrote. He indicated the second winner, car enthusiast Zachary Coombs, intended to spend his winnings on extras for his vehicle.

With more days left in the promotion, Gray wrote that he and his colleagues are hopeful their office will produce more winners.

The easiest way to enter the promotion is to have your 2015 tax return prepared in one of H&R Block’s offices, he wrote.

“The earlier you get in,” he wrote, “the better your chances of winning.”

ELGIN – The Long Red Line event – which supports One Billion Rising, a global movement against rape and interpersonal violence – will be held from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Valentine’s Day, at The Centre of Elgin Heritage Ballroom, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin.

She also was a health and fitness enthusiast and a four-time cancer

survivor. She was a member of Christ Church of Oakbrook and the Congregational Church of Batavia.

Lois is survived by her daughter, Paula and husband, Paul Kanter; son, Perry and wife, Gay Lee; and son, Ross and wife, Camille.

She has seven grandchildren, Dana (Travis) Murdock, Erik (Catherine) Kanter, Catherine Prindle, and Alexander, Gabrielle, Juliette and Danielle Prindle.

Preventing child sex tourism

Special to The Washington Post As principal author of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 – a landmark law combating sex- and labor-trafficking at home and abroad – I am deeply concerned that the United States has not done enough to address the rape and sexual abuse of children by convicted pedophiles who travel in secret to countries where child sex tourism thrives.

That concern is shared by many, and it’s why a unanimous Congress recently passed legislation, which I sponsored as it was refined over eight years, to significantly expand protections for children worldwide. Recently sent to the president for his signature, H.R. 515 – the International Megan’s Law – authorizes the creation of a comprehensive, reciprocal notification system between U.S. and foreign law enforcement regarding the travels of those required by law to be on government sex-offender registries.

This is a serious problem. State Department Trafficking in Persons Reports identify several dozen countries that are destinations for child sex tourism, including Mexico, the Philippines, Brazil and Thailand. Just last month the United Nations noted with alarm increasing child sex tourism in Peru. These governments need to know when convicted pedophiles cross their borders.

A 2010 Government Accountability Office report found that at least 4,500 U.S. passports were issued to registered sex offenders in fiscal 2008 alone. Typically, a passport is valid for 10 years, meaning that currently tens of thousands of offenders could be traveling abroad as child sex tourists. Studies demonstrate that even when caught, some child predators have a propensity to reoffend. For example, a 2009 study by Mark E. Olver, Stephen C.P. Wong and Terry P. Nicholaichuk, one of many available on the Justice Department’s SMART website, found that untreated moderate- to high-risk sex offenders were reconvicted for sex crimes at a rate of 17.7 percent after three years and 32 percent after 10 years.

The most remarked-upon provision of the law is a mandate that an “identifier” – defined as a “visual designation affixed to a conspicuous location” – be placed on passports to indicate that holders appear on a U.S. sex-offender registry for an offense against children. Concerns have been raised about impeding the rights of citizens to travel. U.S. law denies passports to delinquent taxpayers, deadbeat parents and drug smugglers; the law’s passport provision, however, does not go this far. It simply would add an identifier deemed appropriate by the executive branch. And when the legal duty for the sex offender to register ends, so does the requirement for the passport identifier.

The International Megan’s Law honors the memory of Megan Kanka – a precious girl from my hometown of Hamilton, New Jersey, who was kidnapped, raped and brutally murdered in 1994 by a neighbor who, unbeknownst to neighborhood residents, was a convicted sex offender.

As a result of hard work by Megan’s parents, Maureen and Richard Kanka, and others, all 50 states passed Megan’s laws requiring public notification of convicted sex offenders living in a community.

These registries have survived legal challenges across the country because of the compelling interest to protect children. Notably, the same arguments that failed to shut down sex-offender registries are now being employed against the International Megan’s Law. They were poor arguments then, and they are poor arguments now.

and elderly populations, and it’s time for it to end.

This is personal for me. My daughter has special needs and will need the help of the entire community to live a meaningful, productive life.

If it takes a village to raise a child, we are surely not receiving the necessary

support from our leaders.

They should be ashamed that they have abandoned the groups that most need their help.

I urge our elected officials to take immediate action to solve the budget crisis.

kdruley@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – St. Charles North girls basketball fans and reserves erupted in rhythmic clapping as Tuesday’s nonconference game against Glenbard South concluded.

The collective gesture ultimately saluted the busy hands the North Stars displayed on the court during the second half of a 50-41 win. North incessantly moved into passing lanes and in front of ballhandlers to fuel an active and variable defense down the stretch.

“It picks up our energy,” North Stars senior forward Morgan Rosencrants said. “The more stops we get, the better we play.”

Responding to what coach Sean Masoncup called “a very spirited, one-sided conversation at halftime,” North swiftly turned a six-point deficit at intermission into a one-point advantage, the North Stars’ first lead of the game.

A 7-0 run in the first 1:53 of the third quarter set North (20-8) on course. The Raiders (15-10) threatened to stick around behind timely perimeter shooting, but the North Stars eventually seized the pace.

“We put a lot more pressure up on their guards in order to stop the ball, and we picked up the ball before half court,” Rosencrants said.

At the offensive end, the North Stars consistently fed senior forward Claire Jakaitis, using crisp ball movement to punctuate the team’s defensive intensity.

Jakaitis, who recently eclipsed 1,000 career points, scored 16 of her 24 points after halftime while converting each of her eight free throw attempts.

“I would say the passes were a lot better,” Jakaitis said. “The guards were really reading me and throwing the ball for me in the right spot for me to make a move and go up.”

Senior guard Kyla Helsel followed Jakaitis with seven points, including a 3-pointer at the 5:47 mark of the third quarter. The trey was the 105th of Helsel’s career, tying her with 2011 graduate Sydney Russell for the most in program history.

Helsel suggested she would swap an extended run in the upcoming Class 4A postseason for individual records.

“Everyone was talking in school today about how we have no chance and we came out, started off slow, but battled back. That locker room after the game, I mean, that’s probably the most hyped we’ve been all season. It’s a great feeling.”

North (5-13) fell behind to start overtime after two free throws by 6-foot-8 Jacobs center Cameron Krutwig, but it was all North Stars from that point.

3-pointer to give North a lead it would hang onto for the remainder of the contest. North has won back-to-back games for the first time this season, coming off losing streaks of both six and seven games earlier in the campaign.

Schroeder – who scored all 13 of his points in the second half and overtime – led a balanced scoring attack along with junior Griffin Hammer (13 points and 11 rebounds). Karom (12 points) and Kyle King (11) also reached double figures.

While the offensive balance was as good as North has seen this season, most of the night was focused on the defensive side of the ball, trying to contain Krutwig. He was dominant early in the game – finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds – helping the Golden Eagles (18-5) build a nine-point lead late in the first half.

North wasn’t going to back down. It battled back to trail by just two at halftime, and took its first lead of the game, 22-20, on a 3-pointer by Schroeder with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter.

tonight,” Poulin said. “Our execution is something that we’ve struggled with for a good part of this season, but I thought it was much better tonight. We shared the ball so much better than we have all season tonight, and eventually we got a good look.”

The North Stars showed Krutwig consistent double teams for a majority of the game, but he was able to find open shooters on skip passes. Luckily for North, a normally reliable outside game from the Golden Eagles was nonexistent Tuesday night.

Jacobs shot just 6 of 24 from 3-point range, and just 33 percent from the field in the second half.

This season may not be what Schroeder envisioned his senior season to be, but if North is able to make any kind of noise in the Class 4A postseason, it will look back on this game as a big reason why.

“Our record doesn’t matter at this point,” Schroeder said. “It’s not very good at all, but it showed tonight that your record doesn’t need to be good to beat good teams. We have to keep pushing and continue to build off of this for the rest of the season.”

The St. Charles North boys basketball team was right there against Jacobs Tuesday night when the feeling of “Oh no, not again” flashed through every member of the North Stars.

Jacobs hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, but that all-too-familiar feeling that the North Stars have felt this season was not going to happen again. North came out and stopped any sort of momentum that shot gave the Golden Eagles and picked up its biggest win of the season, 53-46.

“You have to go, ‘Really? This is going to happen again?’ ” North coach Tom Poulin said. “How many times can this happen, you know? But we were really, really tough tonight, and that’s a game that I’ll remember for a long time. I told the guys this is a game that a lot of people are going to take a notice of tomorrow. OTTAWA – A stifling defensive effort Tuesday helped the Kaneland girls basketball team to a 55-22 victory against Ottawa in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover.

The Knights (21-4) held the Pirates scoreless in the second quarter to open a 23-3 halftime lead.

Geneva names Rasmussen boys volleyball coach

GENEVA – Geneva has named Stephanie Rasmussen the new boys volleyball coach.

Rasmussen currently serves as the sophomore coach in the girls program.

Rasmussen replaces Annie Seitelman, who remains the girls varsity coach.

A St. Charles North graduate, Rasmussen takes over a boys volleyball program that won a regional and advanced to a sectional championship in the 2015 season.

GENEVA – The Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League typically call Fox Valley Ice Arena home.

DeKALB – For the second consecutive season in 2015, the Northern Illinois football team struggled to keep attendance up after the departure of beloved star quarterback Jordan Lynch.

However, for the second consecutive season, Northern Illinois’ pergame revenue for football games also went up.

It’s been thanks to the addition of several premium seating options at Huskie Stadium, most of which have been added since Sean Frazier took over as athletic director in 2013. According to Jay Vickers, senior associate director of athletics for sport administration at Northern Illinois, the premium seating has been invaluable to keep revenue going while the Huskies are one of several college football teams around the country struggling with attendance.

“It all helps across the board,” Vickers said. “We have some work to do. We’re never satisfied with where we’re at. I don’t think you get too much diminishing returns when you have the demand. That’s why we try

to be very strategic and analytic about how much you build out. We’re nowhere near being near premium area fatigue.”

Vickers said Northern Illinois raised more than $530,000 in revenue from the premium seating area – which include the Sky Club, the Sky Box below the press box, the Terrace Club outside of the Yordon Center, the End Zone Club on the south side of Brigham Field, the Coaches Club below the west grandstands and the chair-back and bench-back seats on the west side of Huskie Stadium.

Vickers has said that there’s been a 138 percent increase in donations since 2013 with the premium seating.

The 2013 season – the final year of Heisman Trophy finalist Lynch – had an average attendance of 20,669 for five games, giving a total revenue of $948,370 ($189,674 per game).

A year later, the Huskies attendance plummeted to 13,563 per game in five contests, but had a total revenue of $1,124,114 ($224,822.80 per game).

Batavia senior point guard Bethany Orman sometimes can be overlooked.

With a teammate like Hannah Frazier, who is closing in on 2,000 career points, it’s understandable where most opposing teams focus their defensive strategies.

But it was Orman that was called on to make a play when it mattered most Friday. After Geneva’s Margaret Whitley hit a shot to put the host Vikings up one, Batavia coach Kevin Jensen called a timeout with 5.5 seconds left that eventually led to Orman’s floater to win the game and put the Bulldogs in a tie with the Vikings atop the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. Orman, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to discuss that moment. An edited transcript follows:

What was the plan on that last play?

Coach drew up a play where everyone needed to go and said, “Beth, just get the ball and do what you need to do.”

I was able to get open and make the floater.

That lefty floater seems like it’s kind of your shot, no?

It is. It’s something I’ve been practicing for a while. I knew the time was running down and it seemed like the right shot in that spot and it turned out to be.

What was this game like for you guys?

It was awesome. The atmosphere and how much the crowd was into it was really cool. That’s such a big gym and to have it packed was a really cool experience to play in.

a decline in crowds, but only gained around 400 more fans per game. Over the span of six home games in 2015, the Huskies had an average attendance of 13,942 per game. With the additional game, the revenue went up to $1,372,642 ($228,773.67 per game) on the season.

Vickers said the exclusivity of premium seating has been part of the reason for the popularity of the areas.

“I think it always plays a role when it comes to premium areas. I really do,” Vickers said. “It’s the exclusivity to say I’m going to the club.”

Vickers said there’s strong popularity in the Sky Club and Sky Box – which is located below the press box and has been wait-listed. The Sky Box features 114 seats inside for $1,250 per season and the Sky Club has 36 seats just outside the Sky Box for $900 per season.

Vickers said the Sky Box has a waiting list of between 25 and 50 people.

“I don’t see frustration,” Vickers said of those on the waiting list, which is determined by annual donation rate and “priority points,” which is how much the person has given in lifetime.

“It tells me the reason why we built more premium areas ... because people

want to have access to more premium areas where they can entertain their friends or themselves.”

While the Huskies have ramped up their efforts into premium seating in the past few seasons, Vickers has said that Northern Illinois has taken notice from universities around the country.

“It’s always an arms race. No matter the sport,” Vickers said. “If we’re in this business and you look at what other people do. Of course we’re looking at it. End Zone Club wasn’t invented here. We saw it at other universities.

We liked that model and we tried it out and I think it’s been well-received.”

While Vickers said there was no immediate plans for new premium seating next season, he added there is different promotional deals – including being able to combine the End Zone Club and Coaches Club into one pass as a discounted rate.

With 2015 being the first year of the End Zone Club – which are the heated tents on the south side of the Huskie Stadium that cost $125 per game and $600 for the season – Vickers said it didn’t sell out, with 46 total passes being sold, but was optimistic for the future of the place.

“It met expectations to people getting interest,” Vickers said. “As far as dollars accrued, no, we’re not satisfied. There’s still work to be done.”

How can I help him achieve a healthy weight without making him feel deprived?

Dear Reader: Being overweight makes it hard for a child to keep up with friends on the playground. And the teasing can be merciless. What’s more, kids who are overweight are at greater risk for lots of health problems as teens and later in life.

Children who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease as adults.

Long-term obesity also increases the risk of arthritis, diabetes and certain kinds of cancer.

The best way to help your son get back to a healthy weight is to get your entire family to exercise regularly and eat a sensible diet.

Your son is less likely to feel deprived if his food and activities are the same as the rest of the family.

Here are some specific tips: • Encourage at least one hour of exercise every day.

• Plan family activities that involve exercise. Try bicycling, walking, hiking and swimming.

• Limit television, computer and video game time to no more than one to two hours a day.

• Switch to low-fat or nonfat milk (except for children younger than 2 years old and women trying to become pregnant) and reduced-fat cheeses and yogurts.

• Drink water instead of soda or juice.

• Limit fried and high-fat foods.

• Use low-fat cooking methods such as baking, steaming, boiling, grilling and broiling.

Since the day he left, we have had no contact whatsoever with him. On his 18th birthday I wanted to call Matthew, but my husband asked me not to. Yesterday, my husband said he was going to give all of Matthew’s things to the Salvation Army. I told him

Giving a child the silent treatment often is regarded as a form of abandonment and is a serious flaw in a family. It’s the parents’ responsibility to see it doesn’t occur. Your husband’s stubbornness stems from a bruised ego, but it’s time for him to be bigger than his hurt feelings and say, “I love you, son.” Then the healing can begin.
