D-303 board votes, 5-2, to drop class rank

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District 303 Board on Monday made official a plan to phase out individual class rank for students, but not before a couple board members shared their concerns about the change.

Board members voted, 5-2, in favor of dropping class rank during its regular monthly meeting. Board

President Steve Spurling and board member Ed McNally voted against the plan.

District officials propose the current junior class – the Class of 2016 – be the last class to receive individual rankings. Reasons that administrators gave for removing class rank include erasing competition between students, the fact that ranking strictly on grades limits students’ course selection and that often fractions of a

percent separate the top students in the class.

Spurling said for some students, challenging academics are similar to participating in a sport, and they would like to learn what place they finished over their high-school careers.

McNally also was in support of ensuring high-achieving students get recognition, but his primary concern was that parents have access to their children’s class rank if

Nun Run 5K set for March 8 SOUTH ELGIN – A new event, the Nun Run 5K, is set for 9:30 a.m. March 8 at the Thornwood Community Center, 850 Thornwood Drive, South Elgin.

Race proceeds will be split between the religious order of a race participant and the Casa Guadalupe Drug and Rehabilitation Center in Tijuana, Mexico.

The Nun Run 5K occurs on the final day of the Here I am Lord National Vocations Conference, hosted by St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles.

Registration is open with a cost of $20 for anyone 14 or older.

Those under the age of 14 (who must have an accompanying adult registered) may register for a $10 fee.

Area districts who already eliminated class rank only receive requests for a student’s specific class rank from military academies, said Jason Pearson, area assistant superintendent for the district’s middle- and high schools. “[Colleges and universities] want students to take the most rigorous program

possible and see that they succeed,” Pearson said.

Board member Corinne Pierog said she received similar information from an admissions counselor she spoke to at a university, the name of which was not disclosed during the meeting.

Schools look to see whether students increasingly challenge themselves as they advance to their senior year in high school, Pierog said.

Townhouse proposal comes under fire

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – About 40 residents came to a Geneva Committee of the Whole meeting Monday to protest the size, height and density of a proposed development of 30 new townhouses.

The redevelopment, proposed by Oak Creek Capital Partners, requires an amendment to the city’s Downtown Station-Area Master Plan from single residential family to single family residential attached, officials said.

The property is 2.16 acres bounded by North Street, Stevens Street, North First Street and North Second Street, and would require demolition of seven existing homes.

Resident Mary Zaander recommended that the devel-

oper build fewer units.

“No judgement here, but the developer is here to make as much money as he can,” Zaander said. “And as neighbors, we want the best development … and to make it a better development. … This is our neighborhood.”

Realtor Teresa Keenan, also a Geneva resident, asked aldermen to take their time on zoning process for the proposed development.

“I’m asking you as our aldermen – please slow down,” Keenan said. “This does not need to be rammed through tonight.”

Aldermen still were hearing discussion of the proposal late Monday. Two weeks ago, aldermen had asked the developer to look at areas of concern by neighbors. It had been approved by the plan commission.

COVER STORY ‘THE BIGGEST TAX CHANGE IN 20 YEARS’ Those who don’t have health insurance will face tax penalty

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Those who will be doing their taxes in the coming weeks or getting their taxes prepared will notice some new questions they have to answer.

That includes answering a question about whether everyone in their household has health insurance. The question is related to the Affordable Care Act, which requires households to have insurance or face a tax penalty.

“Everybody will have at least one question in preparing their taxes this year that refers to it,” said Lynda Gershon, tax adviser and office manager at the H&R Block office at 1772 S. Randall Road in Geneva. “This is the biggest tax change in 20 years.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this tax season is the first time individuals and families in Illinois will be asked to provide basic information regarding their health insurance on their tax returns. Anyone who did not obtain health insurance in 2014 would face a penalty that will be applied through the tax return, Gershon said.

That penalty is currently $95 per adult member of the household ($47.50 for dependents under 18), or 1 percent of the household income, whichever is greater.

She noted that tax penalty will increase next year to $325 per adult or 2 percent of household income, and to $695 per adult or 2.5 percent of household income in two years.

“Now it is getting very expensive not to have insurance,” Gershon said.

Illinois residents also should be aware of other changes in this year’s tax season. According to the Illinois

Department of Revenue’s website, the exemption allowance for individuals has increased to $2,125. In addition, taxpayers in a civil union must now file their Illinois return using the same filing status as their federal return, and taxpayers now can apply an overpayment against their estimated tax obligations even if the return is filed after the extended due date.

Gershon and her staff have been trained on the tax implications of the Affordable Health Care Act. She also has been going to parent meetings at area high schools to educate

residents about those implications, including those who have signed up for insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

“People have no idea this is coming,” she said. “People in the marketplace are not anticipating this. We are trying to get the word out to people, so that they can anticipate whether their own taxes will be impacted this year. If they are going to be impacted, they need to go to somebody who really know what they are doing.”

H&R Block will do a tax analysis for them for free, Gershon said.

According to the latest data released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 296,293 Illinois residents have enrolled or re-enrolled in coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace this enrollment period, as of Jan. 30.

Gershon said those who are enrolled in the marketplace also need to be aware that they can’t do their taxes until they obtain form 1095-A, The Health Insurance Marketplace Statement. But they might not have to file in the first place, she said.

Business owners favor Restaurant Week taking place on weekdays because customer traffic usually is slower on those days compared to the weekends, according to the results of an informal survey taken after the 2014 St. Charles Restaurant Week.

There were more than 3,000 unique views of the Restaurant Week 2014 website, and 732 residents visited various websites of participating restaurants using links provided on the city website, said Matthew O’Rourke, the city’s economic development division manager, after last year’s Restaurant Week.

Study recommends increasing Batavia water, sewer rates

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kane County residents can recycle books and electronics from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Electronics includes more than TVs and computers said Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland.

“Anything that hooks up to a computer or television, such as VCRs, DVD players, stereo equipment, software, fax machines, phones, scanners and printers,” Jarland said.

Also considered electronics for recycling are keyboards, laptops, cellphones, Christmas lights and microwave ovens, she said.

The increase in recycling electronics began when they were banned from landfills starting in 2012, Jarland said.

The county hosted 60 monthly recycling events in Kane County from 2010 to 2014 – in addition to five permanent drop-off locations, Jarland said.

“During the five years, we collected 6.5 million pounds of electronics,” Jarland said.

“Every month, 600 to 800 peo-

ple come in their cars over four hours and we fill three to five semi-trucks. Each truck holds about 24,000 pounds.”

Over the five years, she estimated 69,000 county residents participated in recycling electronics.

Small appliances – like coffeemakers and paper shredders – are not banned from landfills, Jarland said, but county residents are welcome to bring those in for recycling.

“It was not part of the legislation, but because the infrastructure exists for recycling electronic items, we recycle small appliances,” Jarland said.

County recyclers should note a newsletter misprinted the date of next month’s event, Jarland said.

The correct time and date is 8 a.m. to noon March 14 at the same location. The event will include document shredding and recycling liquid latex paint. A per-can fee of $3.50 applies to the paint.

Hazardous waste and large appliances like washers and refrigerators are not accepted, Jarland said.

As proposed, water rates would increase by 3 percent in 2016 and 2017, and by 4.5 percent in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The study also recommended increasing sewer rates by 6 percent starting in 2016 through 2020.

In addition, it recommended the city adopt an alternative residential water

rate structure that includes a summer peak surcharge rate, and increase industrial sewer user charges.

Average users would see their $51.34 monthly water and sewer bill increase to $53.73 next year under the current water rate structure, according to the study.

The study stated about 14 percent of the city’s water lines are exceeding useful

life, at a replacement cost of $24 million. It recommended the city “ramp up” to replacing about $2 million a year of water lines by 2025.

City officials also have anticipated that over the next decade, about $50 million in improvements might be necessary at the wastewater treatment facility to comply with new regulations and to expand treatment capacity.

DR. JOHN DICKENS Dr. John Dickens, age 74, of St. Charles, passed away unexpectedly February 6, 2015.

He was born in Aurora, IL to William and Elizabeth Dickens. He was a lifelong resident of St. Charles, graduating from Marmion Academy in 1958. Following graduation he attended the University of Dayton class of 1962 for his under-graduate degree.

John received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Marquette University class of 1966.

He served his country in the Army and stationed in Korea.

While in Korea he was company Command Captain Commander Company B 2nd Medical Battalion 2nd Infantry Division stationed at Camp Irwin Korea. Upon his return to his home town, he opened his dental practice in downtown St. Charles, in December of 1969. His practice was not just work, but his passion. He loved each of his patients and they along with his staff became his second family.

He served on the board of the Heritage Center in St. Charles, the board of the Norris Center in St. Charles, and was a member of St.

John graduated in 1970 from Marmion Military Academy in Aurora and then attended Southern Illinois University. He worked for 28 years as the plant manager for Houghton-Mifflin Publishing Company. John was a kind and generous man who enjoyed being a mentor to children in the Big Brother program. He spent much of his free time at his cabin in Michigan on Brule Lake. John was an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed snowmobiling, kayaking, golfing, volleyball, and was a certified scuba diver. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his brothers, Frank (Carolyn) of Kentucky and Michael of Colorado; nieces, Nicole (Ryan) Elder of Kentucky, Anissa (Kurt) Neubauer of Kentucky, Erin (Gary) Glass of Texas, and Lauren of Ohio; nephew, David of Kentucky; and many dear relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Clayton Lane Bruntjen, 21, of Saint Charles, IL, passed away Thursday, February 5, peacefully in his sleep while away at School. Clayton was in his senior year at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born in Evanston, IL on May 10, 1993, to Barton and Lynette Bruntjen. Clayton attended Wheaton Academy High School where he participated on the Golf Team, Jazz Band and participated in several mission trips. Clayton has a deep love for life and for his family. Clayton loved to travel to exotic places such as China and he recently completed a 7 week trip through India with Wake Forest University where he won an award for the best photograph from the Study Abroad program. Clayton touched many lives, childhood, high school, and college friends remember him for his loving, caring and fun natured ways.

Clayton was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity at Wake Forest University. He cherished the friendship and brotherhood of his fraternity brother and little sisters. He loved music and enjoyed playing piano and was a talented saxophone player. Clayton’s exuberance for life can be summed up in his recently posted favorite quote, “Social Excellence: to be in a state of perpetual generosity, curiosity, positivity and openness to limitless possibility.” Though taken too soon, Clayton lived his life to the fullest ... and he truly “lived.” His favorite Bible verse was Psalms 9 1:2 “I will say of the Lord. ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, is whom I trust.’”

Clayton is survived by his brother, Carter; and his patents, Barton and Lynette, whom he deeply loved; grandparents, Harold and Darlene Bruntjen; aunts and uncles, Leonard and Janet Bass, Tom and Marla Walch, Roy and Lori Carter, Kirby and Rita Bruntjen, and many beloved cousins.

Fermilab puts the spotlight on physics at open house St. Charles East students present experiment

Evan and other youngsters attending Sunday’s Fermilab’s Family Open House were learning about the principle of buoyancy, thanks to an experiment made by St. Charles East High School students.

The presentation was one of the many activities that took place at the event.

“I liked how it got heavy and went to the bottom, and then it went back up,” Evan said.

School junior Keeley Sherman, 17, was more than happy to speak about the experiment to the kids.

“It’s really fun to explain to the kids how all this works,” Sherman said.

As she explained to those walking past the experiment, if the bottle is not squeezed, the overall density of the diver is slightly lower than that of the water, so it floats.

Squeezing the sides of the bottle, one increases the pressure on the air bubble, compressing it into a smaller space.

Sherman told the kids that by doing this, it decreas-

es the volume of the bubble, causing an increase in the overall density of the diver.

When it becomes greater than that of the surrounding water, it sinks, she said.

“We had looked at different physics experiments for kids,” St. Charles East High School junior Megan Castro said. “We wanted something simple they could play with.

We knew there would be a lot of kids coming by.”

St. Charles East physics teacher Anthony Cerqua said he was proud of how his students were able to explain physics to the kids.

“They’ve been phenomenal,” he said. “They took right off with it. I’m blown away. It’s a way to get them interested in science.”

That is the intent of Fermilab’s Family Open House, said Spencer Pasero, education program leader at Fermilab.

“It shows what physics is about,” he said. “And parents are also learning about our programs and physics.”

ST. CHARLES – Ten years ago, Eric Chock started Prestige Imports, at 333 N. Randall Road in St. Charles, with two employees and 20 cars for sale.

On Saturday, the company marked 10 years in business.

It now is up to 140 used cars in inventory, a dozen full-time employees and five years of doing car repairs.

Prestige also takes vehicles on trade-in and buys them outright.

“It means a lot of hard work and a lot of support from friends and family and customers,” Chock said Saturday during a small party with cake and soda for family and friends.

“It’s exciting to be celebrating 10 years,” said Chock, 41.

“I remember vividly when we hit our one-year anniversary, and my family and I went out to Gino’s for pizza. And I was more excited about the fact that I didn’t go out of business in my first year.

“Because I grew up in Batavia, and my wife in St. Charles, and I didn’t want to be the

“My father-in-law had to come and put a Post-It note on my computer screen, saying, ‘Smile,’ ” Chock said. “He goes, ‘I can tell you’re depressed and that you’re worried. But if you do get a customer in here that’s ready to buy a car, you have to fake a smile. So try to be positive.’ I had to learn how to fake a smile.”

Chock said his background was in accounting and finance, and he worked as a financial analyst for an accounting company.

“I counted beans,” Chock said. “This is a little more exciting and more fun.”

The company has sold between 4,000 and 5,000 cars since opening, Chock said.

And even during the Great Recession, Chock said Prestige never again went 10 days without selling a car.

“There were some scary times during the recession,” Chock said. “But ... we were able to survive and still do pretty well, all things considered.”

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” – Elizabeth Andrew I always have been a volunteer. I can remember as an elementary student helping out in the main office at Fourth Street School. Being part of the middle school student council executive board.

Countless times as a member and chair of committees at Geneva High School and at the University of Illinois. And – at my first post-college job – who do you think was the go-to person to plan birthday celebrations?

Once my children were born, the volunteer car went into overdrive, and my foot is still on that gas pedal.

My parents taught me the meaning of giving back to the community. Being a Sunday school leader, chairing the Coultrap Middle School spaghetti dinner or teaching disco dancing to my fourthgrade class – they were always involved and present, a quality I took to heart and am proud to continue on.

A recipe for trouble THE WASHINGTON POST A new analysis from New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman suggests that Americans are spending billions of dollars a year on ground up radish, rice mustard, primrose, alfalfa, spruce and houseplants.

If this sounds like the most unappetizing plate at an avant-garde vegan restaurant, think again: It’s what the attorney general found when his office conducted DNA testing on six popular dietary supplements sold as house brands at four major retailers – GNC, Target, Wal-Mart and Walgreens.

The attorney general’s results cohere with those of a 2013 study in which Canadian researchers found no trace of the purported contents in a third of the 44 supplements they tested. But both teams found a whole lot else, some of which people with food allergies wouldn’t like in their bodies. The Canadian researchers found black walnuts in gingko biloba pills and an herbal laxative in St. John’s wort capsules, for example.

Failure to list these ingredients on supplement labels is illegal – for good reason.

Representatives of the lightly regulated $13 billion dietary supplement industry fired back quickly, challenging the attorney general’s methods.

Some outside experts agreed that the processing that supplement ingredients undergo might make it difficult to find the bits of DNA that the attorney general’s researchers were looking for. But even if that’s true, it doesn’t excuse the unlabeled filler ingredients the researchers found. It also doesn’t vindicate an industry that sells hope-based medicine with minimal federal oversight.

Adulterated supplements should be no surprise. A 2013 Journal of the American Medical Association analysis reported that “the FDA Tainted Supplement Report listed 332 adulterated products since December 2007.”

But, it found “only 222 of these products (69 percent) were recalled by the FDA.” Part of the problem was that the Food and Drug Administration didn’t even have the right contact information for a fifth of supplement makers.

Moreover, an accompanying JAMA commentary noted, “Given the limited regulation of these products, it is likely that the number of recalls grossly underestimates the number of products on sale with unapproved ingredients.”

Although there is surprisingly little the law bars the industry from doing, supplement manufacturers can’t make any specific claims about efficacy of their products in the treatment of disease. That’s because government experts don’t rigorously evaluate them the way they do pharmaceuticals. Even so, The Post’s Jason Millman pointed out, a 2012 Health and Human Services Department study found that a fifth of the weight loss and immune support supplements it studied came with labels advertising “prohibited disease claims.”

The dietary supplement business has required more federal regulation for years. Congress finally should see to it.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

LETTER TO THE EDITOR WHAT EVERY REAL CONSERVATIVE KNOWS To the Editor: In the Jan. 14 edition of the Kane County Chronicle, Ronald Rawson excoriates Sandra Boelke for a letter she wrote “regarding ‘trampled’ citizens’ rights, abuse of the Constitution … the national elections, and federal spending during ... 2014.” Rawson accuses Republicans of “attacks on voting rights ... repression of minorities, young people, the elderly and disabled ... ” and just about anyone with a pulse.

Rawson equates voter ID with a poll tax. A poll tax is expressly prohibited by the 24th amendment.

Every one of the four amendments Rawson cites early in his letter begins with the words, “The right of citizens of the United States ... .” It would only stand to reason that one would have to prove their citizenship to vote. In many states, poor citizens who can show hardship are given free IDs by the state.

Rawson then goes on to state, “The framers ... sought to expand

voting rights and not to restrict them.” That’s incorrect. Voting in colonial America generally was reserved for male property owners, and this with good reason.

The framers surmised that women were emotional by nature and tended to act more on feelings than facts, and – hence – voting should be left in the hands of men. Because only property could be justly taxed, mainly property owners were allowed to decide how the government should spend tax dollars. Consider, for a moment, the injustice we have today in allowing some to vote themselves the property (money) of others. A tax on wages would have been considered unconscionable in colonial times. That would have caused an uprising greater than the War of Indepen-

dence itself. The 16th amendment is a tax on wages.

Finally, Rawson quite correctly points out what every real conservative knows: The national debt grew under Ronald Reagan. It grew by about 150 percent. In real dollars, Reagan’s debt went from about $1 trillion to $2.6 trillion. Under President Barack Obama, and it’s not over, the debt went from about $12 trillion to $18 trillion: That’s about four times the dollar amount it increased under Reagan.

While the percent increase under Reagan was 150 percent, Obama’s so far is “only” 50 percent. But I’ll take 150 percent increase on a trillion any day over a 50 percent increase on $12 trillion.

Teammates happy to help North Stars assist one another as three of them advance to sectionals

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Ethan Fredericks never heard anyone tell him his St. Charles North wrestling career was over, even though IHSA rules confirm it.

A senior 170-pounder, Fredericks didn’t finish in third place or better at Saturday’s Class 3A West Chicago Regional, ostensibly relegating him to spectator status for the rest of the state series.

Because there’s no stipulation keeping Fredericks from working alongside his three sectional-bound teammates this week, however, he sees no finality. Only four other North Stars accompanied him to regionals, so Fredericks plans to stay invested, starting in the mat room.

“Small team,” Fredericks said, “but in my opinion, we’re one of the best small teams in the country. I’ll say that wholeheartedly. We have five guys, and we all placed at confer-

ence. We’re all very good. Our records are pretty good. If you beat us, you’re pretty decent.

So we’re pretty happy with what we did this year.”

OK, so that last part smacks of closure, but consider it a rare break from form for Fredericks, who finished his senior season at 19-15.

In any event, he’s right about that first part. Led by sophomore Chad Reynolds’ title at 160, each North Star who entered last month’s Upstate Eight Conference tournament at Geneva finished in the top six.

At regionals, sophomore Kolbe O’Brien (28-7) paced the group, taking second at 106.

Senior Steve Collins (27-10) finished third at 138 pounds, while Reynolds (20-13) did the same at 160.

As with Fredericks, senior 132-pounder Conrad Noverini (22-13) fell one win short of advancing to the third-place bout.

“I mean, the guys that we put out are good,” Colllns said.

“But in my opinion, we’re one of the best small teams in the country. I’ll say that wholeheartedly.”

That’s been the longstanding narrative at North, even before second-year coach Ben Hummel took the program’s reins.

North typically filled 10 spots in a 14-wrestler lineup this season, but a late rush of illnesses and injuries thinned the state series crew.

O’Brien certainly personifies the notion that an underclassman can have success, even in a small program. He qualified for sectionals as a freshman, finishing 35-8.

“I feel like I’ve gotten better,” O’Brien said. “Statistically, it might not show it, but I feel better in my matches and I’m wrestling better.”

He credits that, in part, to the atmosphere Hummel has created with the help of assistants and parents. Collins’ dad, Brent, for one, often mans the video camera at meets, taking footage for North to rehash via the online HUDL program.

“Guys want to win and wrestle more,” O’Brien said.

Even the ones who can no longer build upon their wonloss record.

The way Fredericks saw it, he didn’t have time to sulk Saturday. That wouldn’t have been fair to Reynolds, with whom he’ll work closely during workouts once more.

“I’ll be his partner throughout the week, doing what I have to do to get him ready,” Fredericks said. “I’ve done my job so far trying to get him going.

He’s a great kid who’s going to do whatever he can to be successful.”

Warriors overcome double-digit 4th-quarter deficit

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Facing a 10-point deficit with less than 4 minutes to play Monday night, the Wheaton Academy girls basketball team finished off a stirring comeback.

Warriors forward Elizabeth Melby made the first of two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to put her team ahead, 5150, and the Warriors walked off moments later with a 53-50 victory to stun nearby rival St. Francis in a nonconference game.

“Honestly, I was just praying that I would make it,”

Melby said of her go-ahead free throw. “The pressure was really on in that moment. It was encouraging to hear from my teammates, ‘You can do it’ and whatnot. It was nice to have your teammates pick you up like that. A lot was going through my head.”

St. Francis was called for a charge at the other end of the floor, and the Warriors’ Jamie Netzley converted two free throws with 1 second to go for the final margin.

Netzley turned in the play of the night, recording a steal and layup to tie the score at 50 with 21 seconds left as the Spartans contin-

ued to unravel late.

“You can always expect something great from Jamie,” Melby said.

Poor free throw shooting in the closing minutes hurt St. Francis, which broke open a tight game with a 13-2 burst to open the fourth quarter, taking a 44-34 lead at the 3:43 mark on a basket by Leah Riccolo.

Spartans freshman post player Antwainette Walker played a central role in the Spartans’ surge and supplied a crucial steal and transition, three-point play to temporarily thwart the Warriors’ momentum and put her team ahead, 49-43, with

43 seconds left.

Walker finished with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds.

“She’s really good,” Melby said. “Her rebounds are really impressive. I’m excited to play her again next year. She’s going to be a really good player for them.”

Wheaton Academy (15-8), however, renewed its push, and Melby brought the Warriors within 50-48 on a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 26 seconds to play.

“We come up with some big buckets. We just don’t quit.

We’re relentless,” Warriors coach Beth Mitchell said. “It

was a true team win. People just stepped up when we needed to and we had people in foul trouble, and they gave us some really big minutes.”

Netzley (17 points) and Melby (16) paced the Warriors offensively. Melby scored Wheaton Academy’s first 10 points.

The nearby rivals were tied after the first quarter (at 12) and remained level at halftime (22-all).

Walker provided a put-back in the closing seconds of the second quarter to forge the seventh tie of the opening half.

Both teams had at least one player foul out in the tightly called contest.

BURLINGTON – Burlington Central celebrated two accomplishments Monday night against Big Northern Conference East Division girls basketball rival Richmond-Burton.

With a 50-31 victory against the visiting Rockets, Burlington Central clinched its third straight BNC East championship and 37th consecutive win in the division.

The second accomplishment was an individual feat, as 6-foot junior forward Sam Pryor became the latest member of the 1,000-point club for the Rockets (23-3, 13-0 BNC East), surpassing the milestone with 2:16 left in the third quarter on

a shot just outside the paint that hit nothing but net.

Pryor, who finished with 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting, entered the game needing 11 points to reach 1,000.

“Honestly, it’s the biggest weight off my shoulders,” Pryor said of hitting the milestone.

“It’s the best feeling. I’m just so thankful for my teammates.

They told me that I could get the four points in the second half, they gave me the ball and they were so great throughout the whole thing.”

Richmond-Burton (14-13, 8-5) kept the game within reach in the first half and trailed 1210 after the first quarter. Central then ended the half on a 9-2 run to push its lead to 23-16 at the break.

Hindel mentally tough: Batavia sophomore girls gymnast Cameron Hindel scored an 8.3 on the balance beam at last

week’s Wheaton Warrenville South Regional, part of a fifthplace all-around finish that cemented a sectional berth.

Something Hindel did that didn’t show up in the scoresheet – but nonetheless impacted it – impressed Bulldogs coach Taryn Boyce most.

After missing a connection early in her beam routine, Hindel mastered the maneuver upon returning to it.

“As an outsider,” Boyce said, “you couldn’t really tell that she made that mistake.

That’s what a true competitor

is. … Some girls have a lot of skill and they have everything they need, but the pressure gets to them. She’s mentally strong, which in this sport, you have to be. To be able to think on your feet so quickly, that is definitely needed.”

Hindel competed at sectionals as a freshman, placing 20th in vault and missing the state meet cut.

Geneva sophomore Julia Grootens returned to competitive gymnastics this winter after a one-year sojourn to power tumbling.

She figured re-acclimating herself to the balance beam and a harder floor surface would represent her biggest challenges.

Last week, tender ankle and all, Grootens continued proving herself wrong.

Her runner-up beam finish and a fourth-place effort in the floor exercise helped the Geneva girls gymnastics team handily win its own regional and advance to today’s Glenbard North Sectional, where Grootens aims to break through again.

“At the beginning of the year, I was really nervous about it because I’d never done a high school sport and I’d been out of gymnastics for a while,” Grootens said.

“But everyone really helped me be confident, and I think it’s really shown throughout the season, because we’ve all improved a lot.”

Grootens didn’t appear to be drastically balky after injuring her ankle during last month’s Upstate Eight Conference meet – another competition Geneva won in its Mack Olson gym – but coach Kim Hostman didn’t want to take any chances.

Hostman said she and Grootens “watered down her floor routine a little bit” at regionals while electing to insert freshman Bailey Pihera into the lineup at vault. Pihera delivered a fourth-place performance in the event as the Vikings claimed four of the top five spots.

As always, Grootens returned the teammate support on which she’s thrived throughout the season.

“They’ve helped a lot at the meets with cheering and stuff,” Grootens said. “And the meets are extra quiet, too.

They really bring up the mood by cheering really loud, and that’s helped me stay motivated.”

Close to home: Prep sports began blurring state lines years ago, but it wasn’t until last month that it truly felt personal for this reporter.

Two weeks ago, Marmion wrestlers tangled in a tournament against a field that included my alma mater, Christian Brothers College High School of St. Louis. Marmion’s Cadets finished third, two spots ahead of CBC’s Cadets.

The trend continued Saturday, as one of CBC’s Metro Catholic Conference rivals, Vianney, defeated Kaneland in a Bank of O’Fallon Shootout boys basketball matinee.

I’d apologize on behalf of the MCC, but my clout expired when I graduated high school in 2003. So how about ending with something neutral?

It turns out Geneva wrestling coach Tom Chernich was collegiate teammates with my childhood friend’s brother at Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). My friend wrestled for the U.S. Naval Academy in college, and Chernich wound up at his house when my friend competed in the NCAA nationals in St. Louis in 2008.

Old toys are expensive today because they are scarce. Children played with the toys, damaged them, scratched the paint, lost parts and eventually the toy was discarded because of its shabby condition. Today collectors of early tin toys pay premium prices for toys in good condition with most of the original paint.

To repaint it lowers the value. One of the most famous 19th century American toy makers was George Brown. He worked in Connecticut from 1856 to about 1880. The toys were made of tin-plated sheet metal cut into pieces, soldered together and hand painted. His partner was a clock maker and they made their own clockwork mechanisms. They made both push toys and toys that moved after the clockwork was wound. A well-documented tin toy was made to represent the horse Dexter, a famous harness racing champion of the 1860s. A Currier and Ives print and many weathervanes pictured Dexter during his career. The horse was on a wheeled platform and originally had a removable rider but only one complete toy is known today. A riderless horse was offered for about $1,500 at a past auction by Bertoia in Vineland, New Jersey. It would sell for much more today. *** Q: I have a redwood rocking chair that has springs in the back for recoil. It was made by Vandy-Craft of Chicago, Illinois. How old is it and what is it worth?

A: The name “Vandy-Craft” was trademarked by Edward A. Vandy of Park Ridge, Illinois, in 1952. The trademark expired in 1994. The company was known for its redwood patio and garden furniture. Chairs, tables, ottomans, chaise lounges, settees, and other items were made.

A high-back rocker made by VandyCraft, originally $17.99, was advertised for $9.99 in a 1962 newspaper.

The rocker came with thick foam cushions. The value today with cushions is about $100.

*** Q: I got six Wedgwood plates from my aunt, who was a great estate sale shopper and antique collector. The backs are marked with a vase with three stars under it. The words “Wedgwood,” “England,” and “Ovington Brothers” are below that.

Is there a way to tell how old they are?

A: Wedgwood first used the Portland vase mark beginning in 1878.

Three stars were added under the vase in 1900. Ovington Brothers were importers with showrooms in Brooklyn and Chicago. The company was started by Theodore and Edward Ovington in 1845. Some manufacturers made china patterns specifically for Ovington Brothers. The name of the company was changed to Ovingtons sometime after 1922.

Your Wedgwood plates were made between 1900 and the 1920s. *** Q: I have a songbook from the 1937 movie “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The cover reads “Souvenir Album, Words and Music of All the Songs from The World’s Greatest Picture, Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

It was published by Irving Berlin, Inc. The cover has a small tear and one corner is folded down. What is it worth?

A: Snow White was the first fulllength animated picture made. Walt Disney won an honorary award at the 1939 Oscars ceremony recognizing the film as a “significant screen innovation.” Shirley Temple presented the award, one large statuette and seven smaller ones. It’s one of the highest grossing movies of all time.

Dexter, the toy horse on a platform, is nine inches long. The rare tin toy was made about 1880 by George Brown, a famous toy maker from Connecticut.

The movie has been re-released several times and was made on video for home viewing in the ‘90s. Many souvenirs of the original movie were made. This souvenir album is fairly common and sells for $5 to $10.

Your copy, with cover damage, is worth about $5. *** Q: I own a bronze statuette of Rebecca at the Well that was cast in two sections. The two pieces have come loose and have to be tightened up. The woman carrying a water jug is separate from the stone steps. It’s about two feet high. Can you recommend a restorer?

A: This should be a relatively easy repair since nothing is broken or missing. Any good antiques restorer should be able to fix it. The pieces just screw together. Contact a museum or antiques store in your area to see if they have someone who does restoration. *** Q: I inherited a collection of over one-hundred 10- and 12-inch records from my great uncle. Most of the records are from the early 1900s.

by Enrico Caruso and others. All the records are in good shape and playable. Do they have any value? Are there collectors of such items?

A: The value of old records is determined by the fame of the recording artist, the sound quality and the condition of the record. Records made in the first half of the 20th century were made of shellac, a mixture of resin and fiber. The first 10inch records were made in 1901 and the first 12-inch records in 1903.

The most valuable records are not necessarily the oldest and it can be difficult to sell old records. Most sell for only a few dollars, usually $10 or less. You can find groups and publications online that will help you find collectors, or take your records to a store that buys and sells used records. They’ll tell you if any are worth more than a few dollars and which ones are worthless. Remember, when selling to a dealer or shop, expect to get half of what they think they can sell the item for. ADVICE Student wants to uphold standards while abroad Dear Abby: I’m a high school student who has the amazing opportunity to travel to Spain for a school year as a foreign exchange student. I know I am very lucky to have this opportunity to travel, but I am scared about the people there.

I am a Mormon, so I will have to uphold my standards alone in a non-Mormon environment. I have never been away from home for this long, and that’s hard enough as it is.

Jogger with arthritic knees should find softer surface Dear Doctor K: I’m 68. I’ve jogged regularly for decades, but I’ve recently developed a touch of arthritis in my knees. Will continuing to run make my knees wear out faster?

Dear Reader: Having mild arthritis in the knees should not stop you from running. And, in case you were wondering, running probably did not create the problem in the first place.

Like all joints, the knee is where two bones meet. A tough, rubbery substance called cartilage covers the ends of bones. Cartilage serves as a cushion between two bones in a joint. Osteoarthritis causes cartilage to break down.

Osteoarthritis can appear in any joint. But the knee is particularly vulnerable because it is a weight-bearing joint that gets a lot of daily wear and tear over the years. Yet not every older person winds up with osteoarthritis.

Why do some people get osteoarthritis while others don’t? In part, it’s genetic. If your parents or grandparents had arthritis, you are at increased risk of developing it yourself. Gender makes a

Being overweight or obese also drives up risk. The extra weight puts more strain on the joints that must bear that weight.

The knees absorb a lot of force when running, so it’s natural to think that running itself can accelerate the natural wear on the joints. But in fact, running appears to have a protective effect against arthritis. Studies have shown that the average recreational runner has a lower risk of hip and knee arthritis.

There are several possible reasons for the protective effect.

First, regular runners tend to weigh less. Second, running may stimulate cartilage to grow, not wear it out. Third, running builds strength in the leg muscles. Strong thigh muscles tend to cushion the joint by absorbing some of the pounding when you run.

What should you do now that you have arthritis? You should continue regular exercise of your

legs to keep the thigh muscles strong. However, if you continue running, it might help to change your terrain. Softer running surfaces, such as a track at a local school, or a flat and smooth dirt trail, might be a little easier on your knees than running on a sidewalk or street.

If you have pain when you run, consider exercise that keeps leg muscles strong while reducing the impact on your joints. Swimming, cycling and an elliptical cross-trainer are good options.

There are exceptions to this general advice, and I’m one good example. When I was young, the thigh muscle in my right leg was split in a basketball accident. I was in a full-leg cast for months.

Thirty years of jogging on asphalt and concrete surfaces destroyed my right hip – and I had to have a hip replacement. My left hip was, and is, fine. With the benefit of hindsight, I should have switched to using a cross-trainer many years before I did.

The University of Pittsburgh conducted research on children to find out if the kind and amount of food one eats determines a person’s growth and eventual height. The five-year study determined that food played no part in growing taller.

In some cases, those children who believed eating an abundance of food would make them taller only became overweight.

The research team was convinced that a person’s eventual height is governed almost exclusively by heredity.

However, you have up to eight more years to add inches to your height. Eating vegetables, fruits and lean meats will help you stay healthy and that is more important than your eventual height. You should also go easy on foods heavy in fats and sugar.

Good bridge players have the funny habit of watching entries.

Sometimes, though, the number of entries that you have in, say, the dummy, may affect not only your line of play but also the right way to handle a suit combination.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump, and West leads the club queen. How should declarer plan the play? In particular, how should he handle the heart suit? And would his method vary if he had a second dummy entry?

South, with no time or entries to work on diamonds, should try to take these nine tricks: three spades, three hearts, one diamond and two clubs. But how should he go after those heart winners?

If declarer had sufficient dummy entries, he would play a heart to his ace and a heart back to dummy’s queen. The chance of success would be just over 22 percent.

Here, though, that will not work, due to a lack of a second dummy entry. Instead, South should hope that East has king-singleton or -doubleton in hearts, which, of course, is even less likely at just more than 9 percent. At trick two, declarer leads the heart eight (or nine) from the dummy and, unless covered, runs it. With his layout, West takes the trick with his 10 and perseveres in clubs.

South wins with his king, cashes the heart ace to drop the king, and plays a heart to dummy’s nine (or eight). Yes, very lucky, but many would not take advantage of the good fortune.
