OUT AND ABOUT ‘The Mane Event’ fundraiser set WEST CHICAGO – Field of Dreams Horse Rescue and Adoption is holding its premier fundraiser, “The Mane Event,” starting at 5 p.m. March 22 at St. Andrew’s Golf & Country Club, 2241 Route 59, West Chicago.

This event is the seventh annual dinner and auction to support Field of Dreams’ horse facilities in St. Charles and Batavia.

Tickets are $75 apiece or $560 for a table of eight.

There will be a silent auction, a four-course meal and a live auction to follow.

Field of Dreams is a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe haven for abused, neglected and unwanted horses, as well as horses coming from loving homes whose owners can no longer care for them because of financial difficulties.

‘Smart Driver’ course at Delnor Glen ST. CHARLES – A new AARP driver safety course, “Smart Driver,” is set for 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today and Tuesday at Delnor Glen, 975 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles.

This program is designed for motorists age 50 and older and will help participants learn new laws for drivers that took effect Jan. 1, understand the effects of aging on driving, learn driving strategies that take into account the effects of aging, identify the most common crash situations faced by older adults, reduce the chances of having a crash, update their knowledge of today’s traffic laws, vehicles and other road users, and think about how they drive and identify when driving may no longer be safe.

Those who complete this two-day course may be eligible for a discount on their auto insurance.

The cost for the course is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers.

Cougars plan Valentine’s Day experiences GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars organization is offering a Valentine’s Day experience for couples. A limited amount of dinner packages will be on sale for Thursday and Friday.

The events begin at 6:30 p.m. and are at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, 34W002 Cherry Lane, Geneva. Both evenings will include a candlelit dinner for couples at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark prepared and served by the Cougars’ catering staff.

Couples can choose a private suite option ($80 a couple) or enjoy dinner in the banquet room ($70 a couple), a restaurant setting that holds multiple tables. Interested couples can reserve a suite by calling 630-232-8811 and asking for either Jenni Brechtel or Derek Harrigan.

Couples looking to double-date are encouraged to call and make reservations as well.

Last year’s Valentine’s Day dinner event reached capacity on both dates.

Siberian huskies thrill families at Hickory Knolls

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As their next sled run demo approached, a group of Siberian huskies began to yelp loudly and even jump straight up in the air.

“They’re just itching to get going,” said Larry Brodersen, second driver of the sled team.

Families on Saturday saw 10 Siberian huskies in action just outside the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. The huskies are part of the Free Spirit Siberian Rescue Sled Demo Team, which travels to various places across Illinois with their owners. The volunteer team educates people about the Harvard-based rescue group, collects donations and has fun, Brodersen said.

The team came to Kane County as part of the Hickory Knolls Discovery Days event held every February. Visitors watched the dogs race in teams outside on a snow-covered loop, then they got to pet and see them up close between the races. The face-toface encounters are educational because they learn more about the husky’s nature and agility, Brodersen said.

“Some people don’t want to have anything to do with them at first because they look like wolves, but they walk away with a different opinion,” he said.

Brooklyn Curda, 6, of Palatine could not get enough of the huskies – she petted them before and after one of the demo races.

She came to the event with her great aunt Connie Ording of St. Charles.

Curda’s favorite dog from the team was Sasha, a female black and white Siberian husky.

She was one of the lead dogs for Brodersen’s team. Brodersen turned over one of Sasha’s paws to show attendees that the hair between Husky paws acts as a kind of snowshoe so the dogs can keep traction during races.

Next to Sasha was Gunnar, a male Siberian husky and shepherd mix. He did not hesitate to cuddle up next to 6-year-old twins Matisse and Thomas Contreras of Batavia. The dog’s actions reminded the twins of Miko, their black domestic shorthair cat that also likes to snuggle.

This was the first time the twins and their mother, Bridget Contreras, have seen sled dogs up close.

“They like anything that has to do with animals,” Contreras said of her boys.

Auroraland Archers President Karen Larsen was pleased with the turnout for the event.

“It is a great way for people to realize that we are here,” Larsen said. “It really is a good family sport.”

Auroraland Archers is looking for a new home. The Fox Valley Park District plans to tear down its building in Lippold Park because it has fallen in disrepair.

The club plans to have another fun shoot in May before it has to vacate the building, Larsen said. It is negotiating to have an outdoor range at Mooseheart this summer, she said.

NORTH AURORA – Marvin Albert didn’t expect to do well as he pulled back on his bow and aimed the arrow toward the balloon targets.

After all, the 13-year-old Batavia resident didn’t have any archery experience.

“I hit two balloons,” Albert said, beaming with pride. “I was surprised. I thought it would be really hard.”

Marvin was one of 21 families that participated in Sunday’s open house and fun shoot that was hosted by the Auroraland Archers club at its building at the Fox Valley Park District’s Lippold Park.

Jacob Barth, 13, of Batavia also had a good day, which he attributed to his past training.

“I got seven of the 12 tar-

gets,” Barth said. “I’ve shot before. It’s fun. It takes a lot of control. You have to find your own technique of aiming. It takes a bit of practice.”

Melissa McCann, of Geneva, brought her 10-year-old son, Keilan, to the shoot. She was glad the event was indoors.

“It’s hard to find a place to shoot in the winter,” she said.

For the Nedrow family of Montgomery, participating in the fun shoot was a good way to spend a wintry day.

“I did pretty well for the first time,” said William Nedrow, 12. “I popped three balloons. It did feel exhilarating that I got to hold a real bow and arrow. I was thinking of making my own bow and arrow.”

East wrestling leads Tri-Cities contingent

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com SOUTH ELGIN – Isaiah Vela spent all of 36 seconds on the mat Saturday on his way to winning a regional wrestling championship.

The St. Charles East 138-pounder was one of four Saints to win titles at the Class 3A South Elgin Regional, helping East to a second-place finish in the team standings behind Glenbard North, which crowned eight champions.

Joining Vela atop the podium for the Saints were Jake Mende (145 pounds), Keone Derain (152) and Ramon Lopez (160).

Vela (37-3) opened his day by pinning Elgin sophomore Ariel Torres (1-10) in six seconds, breaking Vela’s own school record for fastest fall by one second.

“I just went to an under-

hook and hip tossed him,” Vela said. “I threw him right to his back.”

Vela pinned Bartlett’s Alec Delgado (21-11) in 30 seconds in the semifinals and was awarded the championship when Glenbard North’s Phil Partipilo injury defaulted. Vela had wrestled Partipilo twice earlier in the season and defeated him both times.

Vela said he won’t complain about an easy day.

“It’s the postseason, so you just want to get on and off the mat, so I’ll take it,” Vela said.

East’s other champs had to work a little harder for their titles. Mende (30-7) held off a third-period challenge from Geneva’s Mike Huck (25-14) in the 145-pound final for a 9-5 decision.

“I’ve wrestled Mike Huck a couple times, recently at conference,” Mende said. “It was a little bit closer match at

conference. Coming into this, I knew I’d face him again, and I went out there strong and wrestled a good match.”

Derain (38-4) ran up a 7-0 lead after one period in his title bout with Glenbard North’s Anthony DiPrima (12-16) before pinning him 48 seconds into the second period.

Derain had three pins on the day, as did Lopez (33-7), who pinned Tom Czernek (1112) of Glenbard North 2:30 into their title match.

“We have our little rivalry with GBN every regional,” Lopez said. “Me and Derain were going hard out there looking for sticks because we knew we weren’t winning the team score. We wanted to go out there and have a small victory – finish strong.”

The Panthers won the first five title matches of the night en route to rolling up 263.5 points. The Saints wound up

with 182 points, 65 more than third place Geneva.

East sophomore Anthony Rubino (32-7) lost a tough 11-8 decision to Glenbard North’s Austin Gomez (37-2) in the 113-pound final, and the Saints’ Ryan Valesh (29-11) was defeated by Panther senior Jared Cortez (37-2) in the 132-pound championship match by technical fall. They will advance to Saturday’s sectional tournament at Leyden, along with East’s third-place finishers – D.J. McDermott (120 pounds), Blake Fialka (182) and Will Leite (285).

Geneva advanced five wrestlers to sectional, including sophomore Steven MacDonald (26-9), who downed Bartlett’s Sam Valencia (13-15) in the 113-pound third-place match, 8-4.

(24-10) finished second at 220.

Geneva’s only champion on the day was 182-pounder Mitch Bradberry (21-11), who survived a wild title match with Glenbard North’s Gio Esparza (13-12) for a 13-10 victory.

Bradberry, who has been battling tendonitis in both of his arms, was in obvious pain at the end of the match.

“It was hard to fight through,” he said. “I can’t squeeze for anything. I can’t squeeze at all. I couldn’t write my name if I wanted to right now.”

The only St. Charles North wrestler to advance was freshman Kolbe O’Brien (33-6), who placed third at 106 pounds with a 6-4 victory over South Elgin’s Israel Villarreal (25-21).

O’Brien has been struggling recently with a right shoulder injury and said it caused him difficulty in the third-place match.

St. Joseph 58, Batavia 51: Underdog Batavia brought its gymnasium to life in the fourth quarter against St. Joe, rallying to within one point, but the Bulldogs could come no closer after Canaan Coffey’s 3-pointer brought the Bulldogs within one, 52-51, with 1:05 to play.

Fittingly, an offensive rebound for St. Joe burned Batavia as Chargers big man Nick Rakocevic tipped in

Jordan Ash’s miss and was fouled with 45 seconds to go.

He missed the free throw, but St. Joe led, 54-51, and Canaan Coffey’s attempt to tie it with 32 seconds to play rolled out.

“That was a great team effort, start to finish,” Batavia forward Tucker Knox said.

“We were on. It was just a couple plays. They killed us on the boards. That’s basically what kind of decided the game in the end. I think they had 18 offensive rebounds or something like that, and you can’t win a game like that.”

The 6-foot-9 Rackocevic, in particular, dominated on the boards. The sophomore had 14 rebounds to go with his 19 points.

“He works early for position,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “When a shot goes up and we’re going to hit him, he’s already got position.”

Batavia (6-15) got 16 points from Micah Coffey, including a 3-pointer that brought the Bulldogs within two, 50-48, with 1:49 to play.

Geneva earns share of Upstate Eight River title

The Vikings had captured five straight conference championships and were gift-wrapped an opportunity at a sixth after conference-leading Batavia was upset by St. Charles North on Thursday night.

With North on a high after the big win over Batavia, Saturday night’s contest figured to be a competitive game, but Geneva used its superior size and quickness to blitz the host North Stars, 58-35. The win gives the Vikings a share of the Upstate Eight Conference River crown with Batavia, which downed Streamwood on Saturday to close the conference season.

A huge first half from Janie McCloughan helped Geneva race to a 40-13 lead at the break as the Vikings (19-5, 10-2 UEC River) easily coasted to the win. The junior forward scored

20 of her game-high 24 points in the opening half and sat out most of the second half for the Vikings.

“When we make good passes we always seem to get layups, and that’s something we definitely emphasize,” McCloughan said. “We needed this win to boost our confidence; it was a good game to go into the postseason for us.”

McCloughan said she never scored 20 points in a half before, but was given the opportunity by the Vikings’ propensity to break North’s press. At one point in the second quarter, McCloughan scored four straight points – all on pointblank layups – that helped the Vikings race out to a 33-9 lead with 3:45 to go.

The last layup came on a play in which the ball only touched the floor twice, with McCloughan taking a feed from Sidney Santos and banking the ball off the glass for two. The personal 8-0 run forced a timeout and earned Geneva a standing ovation from the Vikings’

faithful.

Despite only scoring four points on the night, Santos dictated play on both ends of the floor, running the point for the Vikings offensively while playing on the low block defensively. With a height advantage over North’s guards, Santos often made flat-footed, overhand, back-door passes that gave Geneva easy lay-ins.

Any chance of North (13-12, 7-5 UEC River) chipping away at Geneva’s lead went away early in the second half as the Vikings scored the first six points of the half while forcing three straight North Stars turnovers.

After McCloughan scored her last basket of the night with 3:46 to go to give Geneva a 4718 lead, Vikings coach Sarah Meadows began plucking her starters off the floor.

The Vikings shared for the UEC River title despite losing both games against Batavia, which had control of the conference but dropped late-season games to St. Charles East and North.

BATAVIA – The Mooseheart boys basketball team showed it was worthy of its invitation to the prestigious Jim & Sylvia Roberts Night of Hoops showcase, taking a Class 3A state power down to the final minute.

The Ramblers, however, saw their 18-game winning streak snapped, falling to Bartonville Limestone, 63-58.

Mooseheart standout Makur Puou came inches – maybe less – from tying the game in the late stages, but his shot rolled in and out.

Despite the loss, the Ramblers made it clear how tough they’ll be to deal with when the 1A postseason begins later this month.

“I don’t know if there’s a team in 1A that’s as talented as they are, a 3A team like them,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said. “But, gosh darn it, we were right there. We ran what we wanted to run, we got

the ball to Mak, we had a nice layup to tie it up and we missed it. That’s basketball … we did everything right on that play.

He used the backboard, nice cut, we screened for him, and he missed the shot.”

Mooseheart was only 6 of 14 from the free-throw line and missed all three of its free throws in the second half.

“I’m happy to play with a strong team like that and just get beat by five,” Deng said. “It was good competition. About losing, I’m a little bit frustrated, but it is what it is. It’s just a game.”

According to a report on npr.org, the celebration of Valentine’s Day started in ancient Rome and contains elements of both Christian and pre-Christian religions. In the third century A.D., two men named Valentine were executed by the emperor Claudius II in different years on Feb. 14, and a few hundred years later, a pope (Gelasius I) combined St. Valentine’s Day with Lupercalia – a fertility feast – to replace the pagan ritual. (Research this online if you wish, because I found it fascinating.) The holiday didn’t become romanticized until the Renaissance.

That said, allow me to point out that there are few things more unpleasant than feeling forced to give someone a gift. If you have already discussed this with your boyfriend and he’s still resistant, then instead of focusing on what you’re NOT getting out of this relationship, try focusing on what you ARE getting. It may help you to feel less deprived.

Dear Abby: My 38-year-old son is mentally ill and refuses medication, counseling or any type of help. I’m 63, and he physically and mentally abuses me. I had him committed, but he refused to cooperate, so they released him after two weeks. Life after that became worse.

I have no time to myself except when I sleep or take a nap. Family and friends are not allowed in the house because they make him uncomfortable. I can’t even open the blinds to let the sun in because “people are watching him.”

I know he needs help desperately, but I don’t know where else to turn. My family tells me to have him committed and not let him back home. I feel guilty about sending him out of my home because I’m afraid of what he might do or what could happen to him.

I go for counseling once a month, and I have discussed this with my therapist, who says the same thing as my family: “Commit him and throw away the key!” I am so torn! I suffer from depression and this lifestyle does not help.

I’m planning to move to another state where I have family, and I don’t know what to do with him. I feel like I’m trading one cell for another. Any suggestions would be appreciated. – Loyal Reader In New York Dear Loyal Reader: Listen to your therapist. If your son is institutionalized, he will be in a safe environment.

The alternative could be that he would become one of the multitude of mentally ill individuals who are living on the street.

If your son is medicated, he might be able to live in a group home where he could be sheltered and taken care of. With medication he might be able to have more of a life than you have provided.

You may feel guilty, but you are not responsible for your son’s mental illness.

It is very important that you are successfully treated for your depression before

At the bridge table, do not count the minutes; instead, count the points, the winners, the losers. The more counting you do, the more successful you will be.

In this deal, South charges into six hearts. How should he play after West leads the spade king?

South decided that if he needed a side-suit finesse to work, it probably would, given West’s opening bid. So he adventurously used the Gerber four-club ace-asking convention, then settled into six hearts.

South is missing 15 high-card points. So it is just possible that East has the heart king. And if East has that king, West must hold the club king, and declarer can take all 13 tricks. However, if the heart finesse loses, West will cash a couple of spade tricks.

Suppose, instead, that the club finesse is winning. How many tricks would that provide?

One spade, six hearts, two diamonds and three clubs – ah, 12.

South should win with his spade ace and play a club to dummy’s jack. Then he should lead the heart queen, tempting East to cover if he has the king.

But when East plays low, declarer wins with his ace, repeats the club finesse, and discards his two spade losers, one on the club ace and one on the diamond king. Then he concedes one trick to West’s heart king.
