Selling cookies and so much more The Kane County Chronicle has been the recipient this month of two tasty media kits from the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois organization.

Dropped off at our office annually by moms and their daughters, the kits include an assortment of Girl Scout cookies, as well as information about the cookie-selling program.

The timing of when this year’s cookie kits arrived was perfect for me, as I already had Girl Scout cookies on the brain.

A friend I have known since first grade asked whether I would pass around an order form to help increase her daughter’s cookie sales.

I decided to do it, but I told myself it would be on one condition: I wouldn’t pressure anyone to buy the sweet treats.

After all, I’d already done my time selling cookies.

I always thought it was kind of tough because instead of one person selling cookies there were two – my sister and me splitting sales between us.

On top of that, I also was in park district soccer each spring and fall, and my two sisters and I had to sell candy for that. I think a bunch of our neighbors really got to know us through our constant sales efforts.

That being said, I do think I learned a lot from selling cookies (and candy). Just like the Girl Scout media kit says, I learned goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Kotvan, a cadet in St. Charles Troop 4298, also has identified with those skills.

“You really have to know how to spend your money after you get it,” she said, adding that “you really need to know what audience you’re trying to appeal to.”

Sisters Lexi Blondin, 10, and Emma Blondin, 7, a junior and brownie, respectively, have found positives in selling cookies as well.

“It’s taught me how to goal set,” Lexi said. “My troop is trying to go to a dude ranch, so that’s what we’re trying to save money for.”

Oh, by the way, I sold more than 40 boxes of cookies for my friend’s daughter. Not too bad for an ol’ brownie.

••• My fiance (yes, I did get engaged over the holidays!) and I attended the opening recep-

tion for the “I AMerican” art exhibit at Water Street Studios in Batavia on Jan. 24.

The exhibit is a “multi-media exhibition exploring what it means to be an ‘American’ from the perspective of bi-cultural artists living in the U.S.,” states Water Street’s website.

It was great to get out of the house on a cold Friday night to check out a variety of art, discuss different pieces on display and mingle with art-lovers young and old.

Sheriff’s spokesman: If you drive, ‘expect to get stuck’

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said he hopes county residents who drive into the snowy conditions expected this weekend will be prepared for what they will face.

A winter storm warning will be in effect through 6 p.m. today, with 6 to 10 inches of snow anticipated during that time. Gengler said drivers should “expect to get stuck.”

“I keep hammering home the same message – be prepared,” said Gengler, who has issued news releases on a regular basis during the extreme winter weather the county has experienced this year. “If you choose to go out, expect to get stuck. Then, if you do, you’ll be prepared for it.”

He said drivers should have a charged cellphone and a full tank of gas, and said they should “be prepared to be in your car for an extended period of time.”

The National Weather Service forecast called for snow to begin Friday night and con-

tinue through today. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be possible by mid-morning today.

“It’s a significant snow event,” said Amy Seeley, a meteorologist with the weather service.

The harsh winter weather has had an impact on salt supplies. Last week, St. Charles School District 303 officials said they had run out of salt.

On Friday, the village of Sugar Grove sent out a news release indicating that “the use of salt for the foreseeable future will be focused on primary streets,” and asked that “all motorists use extra

caution.”

Gengler said it’s difficult for sheriff’s department officials to come to the aid of motorists in such conditions. He said it can be frustrating when officers talk to stranded drivers and find that their reasons for going out don’t seem to be urgent. He said such drivers should understand that they could wind up with a bill from tow truck drivers, who “aren’t doing this for free.” And he said in such conditions, people should consider themselves fortunate to be able to get a tow truck to come.

said there have been significant waits, and he said officials might be forced to remove the vehicle before that assistance arrives.

He said the winter has been a challenge, and “each one of these winter events has had its own personality.” He said this storm appears that it will cause “really, really difficult” travel situations, at least until this afternoon. He said people should “think twice” about going out if the reason for driving can wait until the storm has passed and the streets have been cleared.

“They might have to delay running to the store,” he said.

Batavia Citizen of the Year Former alderman Hanson honored at Chamber of Commerce event

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – In accepting 2013 Batavia Citizen of the Year award, former Batavia alderman Jim Hanson downplayed his accomplishments.

“To me, it’s something that anybody should be able to do,” the 88-year-old Hanson said, just before receiving the award presented by the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

Hanson was honored Friday at the chamber’s annual awards event, “Inspire 2014: A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us!” at the Commons Auditorium at The Holmstad.

Hanson was elected as an alderman in 1961 and served

as the chair of what then was known as the planning, zoning and annexation committee.

During the 16 years of his tenure, downtown Batavia Plaza came into being, and land was acquired north of Wilson Street for additional development.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke lauded Hanson for his efforts in the redevelopment of downtown Batavia. He said it was during Hanson’s tenure on the City Council that a lot of old factory buildings were torn down, and he helped redevelop the area where Panera Bread and Walgreen’s are now on Wilson Street.

While on the City Council, Hanson also worked on an

open housing ordinance that fought discrimination and segregation to ensure fair housing.

He was instrumental in helping provide the Muslim community with a meeting place 30 years ago.

The Muslim community continues to meet at Calvary Church today.

Friday also was the last day for Roger Breisch, executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. He has headed the organization for almost 10 years.

“Roger has been somebody who has taken the Batavia Chamber to a new plateau,” Schielke said.

The Batavia Citizen of the

Year is selected by a committee of previous recipients of the award and is based on nominations from the community. The award is given for extraordinary contributions to the community over the course of the recipient’s lifetime.

In addition to his work on the Batavia City Council, Hanson continues to volunteer each month at the Batavia Depot Museum. He was involved with the R.S.V.P. group and resigned from the board last spring.

Hanson worked as a teacher in the West Aurora School District and also served three terms as the Kane County regional school superintendent.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Former St. Charles economic development director Chris Aiston, 55, of the 700 block of James Street, Geneva, has been charged by the Geneva Police Department for driving under the influence of alcohol after a crash that took place Jan. 22.

Aiston left his St. Charles post in July after having been in that role since 2009.

The Batavia City Council in Chris Aiston August voted to hire Aiston as an independent contractor for economic development services. He is being paid an annual retainer of $88,000.

His arrest occurred at 11:21 p.m. Jan. 22 in the 1500 block of East State Street. He also was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving too fast for conditions. The report did not indicate Aiston’s blood-alcohol level.

Aiston could not be reached for comment. A plea setting is scheduled for Feb. 19.

According to the accident report, Aiston was driving westbound in the curb lane in the 1500 block of East State Street, approaching Kirk Road, when he attempted to stop but slid on the slush on the road and rear-ended another car, causing that car to rear end a third car.

His arrest did not happen while he was on business for Batavia. Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said the city was notified after it happened.

“He wasn’t doing anything with the city at the time it happened,” McGrath said. “I don’t see how this impacts the work he has been doing for us. He’s been doing a real nice job.”

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Aiston already has helped to bring new businesses to the city since his hiring.

“He has been a proven performer in my eyes,” Schielke said.

Aiston has more than 20 years of experience in planning, zoning and economic development, including stints in Geneva, Kane County and DeKalb County in addition to St. Charles.

“At this point, it is something he has to deal with on a personal level,” Batavia 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said. “If it ever affected city business, he would be gone.”

Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit agreed that Aiston has been doing a good job for the city.

“It doesn’t seem like this is affecting his job,” Chanzit said. “If this was a city event or if he was leaving a city event, then that would make all the difference. This is something very personal that he will have to confront and overcome. This sounds like an opportunity for a wake-up call.”

GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said he would welcome safeguards that would alert him and his staff to failing equipment.

But, he said, “I need money to do that.”

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen encouraged the use of such safeguards and preventative mea- Rob Russell sures when the Finance/Budget Committee this week reviewed the $3,497 morgue freezer repair cost.

The freezer Chris Lauzen had a refrigerant leak and needed a new compressor in late November.

The County Board is expected to act on the budget adjustment request Feb. 11.

Russell said he is trying to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars, but he also is dealing with outdated and inadequate facilities.

“How much money do we

want to pour into this broken building?” he said.

His first year as coroner ended with an overage of about $19,600 – an amount Lauzen singled out during the finance meeting.

In a fiscal year that also ended with about $6.7 million more in revenue than budgeted, Russell said he doesn’t understand the fuss about his overage, which he feels was justified.

“Considering the mess that was left for me to clean up, I think we did a good job,” Russell said. “The alternatives could have cost the county a lot more than that had we not corrected the overtime and autopsy issues.”

The coroner’s office was last helmed by Chuck West.

West had been charged with official misconduct and died before his case went to trial.

Russell said he hopes the county board will help his office by beginning the process of appropriating capital for improvements.

“I welcome the chairman’s support for new technology that would increase the safety and security of this office and will move forward with him to rectify this problem,” Russell said.

Water main breaks repaired

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Crews in St. Charles spent much of Friday doing what is anticipated during winter months – repairing water main breaks.

“We had been fortunate so far,” said John Lamb, the city’s environmental services manager.

On average, he said, the city has about six water main breaks in January. The two that occurred Friday put the city about one over, he said.

He said that both lines affected Friday are almost 80 years old.

At most, Lamb said, water service was disrupted for a half-hour. He explained crews were able to isolate the lines and reroute the water.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Lamb said.

St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet described the closure as a “very, very small inconvenience” for Fire Station No. 1, which is along Riverside Avenue just north of Cedar Avenue.

The fire station was built with such a scenario in mind, he said, explaining a bumpout in the road allows for extra space in front of the station.

“We’ll make a right, go north and head up State Avenue,” Schelstreet said.

The other water main break happened at about 7:45 a.m. on Route 25 – locally known as Fifth Avenue – between State and Park avenues, the city reported.

Traffic on Route 25 was reduced to one lane between Cedar and Park avenues during repairs, according to the city.

Lamb said both roads were reopened by late afternoon.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is seeking information about a sign shot along Lincoln Highway on Tuesday night.

Police have no description of the two suspects, which is why they are asking the public for help, spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said.

“It was fairly early in the evening, so we’re hoping someone heard or saw something,” she said.

A witness reportedly saw two individuals pointing a gun at a real estate sign about 8 p.m. in the 2400 block of Lincoln Highway just west of Randall Road in St. Charles.

In checking the area, police found damage to the sign and several shotgun shells, police said.

GENEVA – After several months of discussions, Rockford Health System and Cadence Health mutually have agreed to discontinue discussions about merging, Cadence announced in a news release.

In November, the two systems had signed a letter of intent to merge.

“In many respects we are like-minded organizations,” Gary Kaatz, Rockford Health System President and CEO, stated in a news release. “We enjoy similar commitments to clinical quality, patient safety, innovative program development and employee engagement, as well as to efficient and cost-effective care. However, as we moved forward in our discussions, it became clear that we would not be able to arrive at an agreement that would provide mutual benefit to both

the Rockford community and to the Cadence organization.

After deeper review, we recognized that our strategic imperatives did not align.”

Change underway at Batavia chamber The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is undergoing exciting change.

Longtime executive director Roger Breisch worked his last day as leader of the chamber Friday, the same day that the organization hosted its annual celebration and awards event, which had the theme “Inspire 2014.”

Holly Deitchman, station manager at Batavia Access Television – or BATV – will become the new executive director of the Batavia Chamber. Her first day in the position will be Feb. 10.

New leadership often invigorates an organization. But change also can prompt reflection.

Breisch worked as executive director of the chamber for nearly 10 years and accomplished much during that time.

He increased membership in the chamber to 280 from 200 while working as director of the organization, and he helped start the Batavia Women in Business group. In addition, he worked to strengthen ties between the chamber and city government.

Breisch brought sophistication to the chamber as well. And he steered the organization through some difficult times, including through the worst parts of the Great Recession and through significant road construction

projects that affected businesses in downtown Batavia.

Celebrating those successes is important, as is preparing for the future.

Deitchman is a wellknown figure in Batavia and has served as station manager of BATV since July 2008.

Her skills in accounting, technology, public speaking and demographics will aid her in the role of executive director for the chamber, as will her enthusiasm for the job.

Breisch has said he is confident that Deitchman will guide the chamber in the right direction.

And Deitchman seems ready for the challenge.

“I see great things coming to the Batavia Chamber of Commerce in the short term and long term,” Deitchman said after being named executive director. “I look forward to meeting with local businesses to see what we can do make their experience in Batavia even better.”

Determining the needs of chamber members in today’s world and providing related resources and tools will be an important part of the executive director’s job.

And harnessing new technologies likely will be a significant part of that undertaking.

Here’s to an inspiring 2014 at the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

The farm bill deserves a veto THE WASHINGTON POST In two recent speeches – his Dec. 4 oration on income inequality and his State of the Union address Tuesday night – President Barack Obama proclaimed his commitment to fairness and equal opportunity.

In the former address, he called inequality “the defining challenge of our time”; in the latter, he vowed to use executive action to meet it.

So, we hope Obama will pick up the phone, call Congress and tell it he’s preparing his veto pen for the 2014 farm bill. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that this legislative grotesquerie gives to the rich and takes from the poor.

Tipping the financial scales at $956 billion over 10 years, or just over $1 billion per page, the hideously complex bill is supposedly a compromise that reforms crop subsidy programs. To be sure, it eliminates a program that gave billions each year in “direct payments” to farmers regardless of individual need or economic conditions, and it incentivizes

participation in soil conservation programs.

But what the bill takes from the ag lobby with one hand, it largely gives back with the other.

Of $40.8 billion in projected savings – over 10 years – from eliminating direct payments, the bill restores $27.2 billion via enhanced crop insurance subsidies and a new program that “insures” against adverse price movements.

Supposedly necessary to secure the nation’s food supply at a time of record farm income and epidemic obesity, this federal largess flows almost regardless of how much money its recipients already have. People making up to $900,000 per year in adjusted gross income can qualify for payments. The total commodity-program take for any individual “actively engaged” in farming is capped at $125,000 – or 2½ times the national median household income. But this “limit” is mostly phony. “Actively engaged” has applied to many an absentee investor in the past; Congress did not deign to refine this plastic criterion. It asked Ag-

riculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to do so through the regulatory process, which farm interests hugely influence.

Meanwhile, the bill cuts $8.5 billion over 10 years from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the poor.

Considered in isolation, this trim is both modest and justified; it closes a loophole that enabled states to award extra benefits by fiddling with recipients’ household budget data. It was preferable to the larger cuts Republicans wanted. But attached to so much corporate welfare, it’s hard to swallow, especially when that corporate welfare isn’t rigorously means-tested.

The bill’s total projected savings of $16.6 billion over a decade are paltry compared with the $38 billion President Obama called for in his fiscal 2014 budget.

Exhausted by two years of trench warfare by farm lobbies, lawmakers are desperate to pass this turkey and move on.

Obama can put them out of their misery by signing it – or stand up for his declared principles by vetoing it.

Out of salt? Ridiculous!

I’m calling about the ongoing saga with the St. Charles resident on Prairie. He’s been working on his home for 20, 40, 50 years?

Come on. Get somebody in there to get his property up to code, like the rest of us in St. Charles. We didn’t have as long as he did. ... He wants the best? By the time he gets this done, he’ll be 95 years old. What’s the point? I can’t see the city dragging this on. If he wants something to be done with his property, let the city bring somebody in to hire. I had to get a one-sided chimney fixed last year.

I’ve been unemployed for three years. It cost me over $2,000. Is that fair? What did I have? Nothing, but this guy. Who is he?

Wolf sighting? Never say never again We used to say it could never happen.

As few as 15 years ago, if anyone in our area said, “I think I saw a wolf,” the naturalist community would shake its collective head.

“Couldn’t happen,” we’d say.

“Not today. Habitat’s gone.

Had to be a coyote. Or maybe a wild dog.”

We were sure of ourselves back then. After all, Canis lupus, the gray wolf, also known as the timber wolf, was a federally endangered species. In Illinois, it was considered extirpated – that is, no longer surviving in regions that once were part of its range.

For proof, we had Donald Hoffmeister’s Mammals of Illinois, the definitive reference for fur-bearing critters in our fair state. Right there on page 47, he stated that “probably all wolves were gone from Illinois before the 1860s.” What more confirmation did we need?

But since the 1990s or so, things have started to change. Upper Midwestern gray wolves, afforded the

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto protection of the Endangered Species Act – and the benefit of a burgeoning whitetail deer population – began to thrive in remote regions. First, Minnesota, then Wisconsin and Michigan. By 2004, Wisconsin had removed the wolf from its list of state-endangered species, and in 2012, the animal was delisted federally.

According to data from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s annual wolf counts, over the winter of 2012-13 Minnesota’s wolves numbered 2,211; Wisconsin’s came in at 809; and Michigan’s, 658.

Simply put, that’s a lot of wolves.

Consequently, these days, when someone in our area says, “I think I saw a wolf,” I, for one, want to know more. Where was it seen?

What did it look like? What was it doing? How big was it? Although the chances of

seeing a wolf in Kane County are extremely remote, we’ve reached the point where we can “never say never.”

One report that intrigued me a few years ago was from a young woman who was attending college in Minnesota. At home in rural Kane County on winter break, she saw an animal “way too big to be a coyote.”

Having seen wolves in the wild in Minnesota, she said the animal she saw looked, and acted, very much like a wolf. Wary yet determined, it sniffed at a fencepost before disappearing into the farm landscape.

Another interesting account, this one from Elburn, is much more recent. On Jan. 15, Bryan Salvage was heading to the post office, driving on Route 47 just north of Keslinger Road when he saw a large, wolf-like animal. “It was running fast, heading west, 50 yards north of the intersection of Keslinger and Route 47,” he recounted via email. “It ran from the cemetery into the field across 47.

I’m wondering if this animal

has a den in the clump of torn down trees to the west of the field as that was the direction it was headed.”

Bryan said he couldn’t stop to see where the animal was going, and he hasn’t seen it since. But the impression he was left with – an animal that was larger than a coyote, with a more rounded, less pointy nose and a grayish, wolf-like coat – was one he’s unlikely to forget any time soon.

Of course any possible wolf sightings will remain just that – unverified possibilities – unless solid DNA evidence is collected.

And the chances of wolves actually reclaiming their niche in northeastern Illinois are still extremely remote.

We just don’t have the open space and habitat that wolves, plural, would need to survive. But an isolated individual, passing through on its way to claim new territory?

I think it’s impossible ... to never say never again.

Attractions that day will include presenters and animals from the Big Run Wolf Ranch in Lockport, as well as sled-dog demonstrations from our friends at Free Spirit Siberian Rescue.

Freshman Hayden Patterson’s 11-2 victory in the final match of the night at 132 pounds gave the Knights (15-7) a 37-32 nonconference victory over Batavia.

“It was really hard,” Patterson said of dealing with the pressure on him. “I had to keep going and couldn’t give up. I know we were both sweating and I couldn’t even grip anything.”

Patterson found enough to grip to score a reversal and 3-point near fall in the second period to erase a 2-0 lead by Nolan Adams.

“I didn’t have much time left in that period and I knew I had to keep going,” Patterson said. “Once I took him down, I knew his hand was there and I went for it and got him on his back.”

Patterson added a pair of near falls in the third period to pick up his second victory in three varsity matches.

“He did an awesome job,” Kaneland coach Monty Jahns said. “He always goes out and gives us six minutes no matter what the situation.”

Pins by Dane Goodenough (138 pounds), Riley Vanik (145), and Tom Price (170) helped the Knights jump out to a 24-0 lead, along with decisions from George Strang (152) and Austin Parks (160).

super heavyweight Justin Diddell, a task he was not really relishing.

“You know, I’ve never been a huge fan of wrestling the big guys,” McKeehan said. “It’s really daunting, honestly.

You just kind of look up and go, ‘Oh. Hi there. You’re a lot bigger than me.’ ” McKeehan jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Diddell regrouped and appeared to have McKeehan in trouble early in the second period, but McKeehan suddenly reversed things and put Diddell on his back.

“That moment was exemplary of my style,” McKeehan said. “I get in these weird positions and think I’m done for and I’m losing and half a second later he’s the one that’s down and out and nobody knows what happened – not

even me.”

Although he may not enjoy wrestling much larger opponents, Batavia coach Scott Bayer said he doesn’t hesitate to put McKeehan in those situations.

“At this point in the season … you want to be challenged,” Bayer said. “I knew they had a big strong heavyweight. Connor’s a bull, as well. At this point in the season, you don’t want to back down from any challenge.”

Austin Kedzie put Kaneland back in front with a pin at 106, but the Bulldogs took a 32-30 lead thanks to major decisions by Mike Duranski (113) and Seth Winkle (120).

kdruley@shawmedia.com ELGIN – A few fans seated in the front row of St. Edward’s home bleachers shifted back one row Friday at the request of a pregame public address announcement.

The maneuver protected an already cozy sideline from getting slick, but every other spot on the floor was fair game for the Kaneland boys basketball team.

Senior John Pruett weaved through Green Wave defenders most often, scoring a career-high 29 points in a 65-55 victory. Fittingly, Pruett shrugged his shoulders and credited some basic tutelage from coach Brian Johnson, who won in his return to his alma mater.

“Whatever I thought was open, I went to it. Just tried to score,” Pruett said. “Just go up strong and try to finish.”

Classmate Tyler Carlson joined Pruett in double figures with 19 points, providing some welcome stability for the 10-6 Knights, who were playing for the first time since Jan. 17.

Pruett scored a then career-high 27 points in an overtime loss to the Foxes in that game.

While inclement weather and an open schedule kept Kaneland from running the floor in the interim – even practices have been limited lately – it was easy for Johnson’s charges to channel his enthusiasm in the gym where he cultivated it.

Ryan David matched Pruett with a team-high nine rebounds. The Knights outhustled the Green Wave under the boards throughout the night, seizing their chances as St. Edward went 1 for 17 from 3-point range despite many clean looks.

Sure, not everything was pleasant – Johnson pointed to his team’s 15 for 29 free throw shooting – but Johnson seemed primed to savor the night either way after St. Edward coach P.J. White extended the invitation.

“It’s an honor to be back. I love this gym. A lot of memories in here,” Johnson said.

“It was neat. It was obviously different not being out there on the floor, but I feel really lucky that coach White agreed to play and have us out here, and also lucky to get the win.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – In recognition of senior night, Geneva girls basketball players wore T-shirts sporting the words “Respect Your Elders” on the front before Friday’s game with Streamwood.

In a show of admiration of the graduating team members, an all-senior lineup started the game and the first three substitutions featured seniors as well.

However, it was the underclassmen that provided the offensive spark for the Vikings, who defeated the Sabres, 57-38, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

Freshman Grace Loberg led the way with a game-high 18 points and junior teammate Janie McCloughan finished with 13 points.

The Sabres (10-11 5-5 UEC River) held the lead for the first five minutes until Loberg’s first basket of the night at the 2:40 mark tied the game at 5.

The 6-foot-1 forward put her team ahead by connecting on two free throws to give the Vikings a 7-5 lead.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt once Geneva (17-5, 7-2) took the lead.

Another Loberg bucket game her team a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“Grace played great,” said Geneva coach Sarah Meadows. “In four minutes she scored 12 points and it’s amazing.”

“My teammates made it pretty easy for me to do what I was able to do,” Loberg said. “I just wanted to play a good game and win one for the seniors”.

Geneva expanded their lead to 18 points at the half, leading 32-14 and led 48-24 after three quarters.

The Vikings defense held Hannah McGlone, Streamwood’s usual scoring leader to four points.

“We played the two three zone to kind of sandwich her,” Meadows said. “One in front and one in back and get some pressure on her.”

Senior Madeline Dunn scored eight points for the Vikings.

Kiana Jeremiah was the Sabres’ top scorer with eight points while teammates Cayla Hawkins notched seven and Holly Foret scored six.

“It was emotional but honestly I wouldn’t have this night any other way,” said senior Sidney Santos” of her last home game.

With that in mind, there was hardly any gallows humor from Johnson about his alma mater not wanting to see his shadow again nearly 17 years after his 1997 graduation.

“It was more the other way around,” White chuckled. “ ‘You guys don’t want to play us, or what?’ ” White, a former longtime Batavia assistant in his fourth season leading the Green Wave, understood the Knights’ plight, as he doubles as St. Edward’s athletic director.

Erring on the side of caution when weather is involved always is the best policy, and regrets do no good. Citing Kaneland’s rural setting and the threat of drifting snow, the city-dwelling Green Wave waited for the Knights for another 24 hours.

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com WHEATON – For threeplus quarters, the St. Francis girls basketball team was playing catch-up after runs in the first and third quarter spotted Aurora Christian double-digit leads.

Luck finally turned for the Spartans as a few timely 3-pointers fell and the St. Francis defense forced five Eagles turnovers late to help the Spartans earn a gritty 5047 win.

“That’s the first game that we finally finished; we’ve had a lot of games like that we’re we’ve come out slow and have had to catch up,” St. Francis coach Mike Phillips said. “Tonight we did a really good job against a really good team. We switched up the defense in the second half

and I think that was the difference.”

Aurora Christian (12-11, 4-4 SCC) sprinted out to 10-point leads at the start of each half, forcing St. Francis to change defenses in the third quarter to thwart the Eagles’ efficient half-court offense.

Down 33-23 midway through the third quarter, St. Francis sagged back into a 1-2-2 zone that frustrated the Aurora Christian offense and allowed the Spartans to push the ball up the floor on rebounds and steals.

The defensive switch corresponded with the Spartans (9-12, 3-6) holding the Eagles to a pair of field goals over the remaining 2:30 of the third quarter.

Reagan Sproat’s 3-pointer with three seconds to go in the quarter pulled the Spartans’ to within 38-35.

St. Francis senior Caroline Pins banged home a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to give the Spartans’ their first lead of the game at 40-39.

The Spartans ramped up their defense thereafter, holding the Eagles without a field goal for nearly four minutes as St. Francis took its biggest lead of the game on a Kasprak 3-pointer with 3:43 left, giving the Spartans a 45-41 lead.

Reigning SCC Player of the Year Alyssa Andersenwas held scoreless in the second half after a 12-point first half until she pulled Aurora Christian within 47-45 with 1:16 to go.

Turnovers proved to be the difference over the last minute of the game as the Eagles had a chance to tie on several occasions.

The final turnover came with the Eagles trailing, 5047, with six seconds to go.

Pushing the ball at half court, freshman Mia Mazza picked off a pass and ran out of the clock.

Mazza led all scorers with 17 points, 12 coming in the second half.

“Last time we played them we had a pretty devastating loss. We were tied with them at the half and we ended up losing by 18,” Mazza said.

“We all just kind of got it in our heads that we were going to beat this team. We had a 1-2-2 in the last half and our coaches just told us to keep an eye on Andersen the whole time and I think we did a pretty good job of it.”

In the first half, Andersen had a stretch of three straight field goals that pushed Aurora Christian’s lead to 13-3 in

the early going.

It was St. Francis’ defensive effort in the second half – which included limiting Anderson to no field goals until the last minute of the fourth quarter – that played a big role in the Spartans’ getting back into the game.

“We didn’t give up we just had some turnovers in key moments, give them credit,” Aurora Christian coach Jerry Tokars said. “They got amped up and this is a game of momentum. Some times it works for you and some times it doesn’t. We went up 10-0 and the next thing you know they’re hitting 3’s.”

Along with Mazza, Kasprak (14 points) was big in the second half with a late 3-pointer while Sloane Baumgartner and Sproat knocked down free throws to preserve the win.

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab – all current powers in many sports in the UEC’s Valley Division – has prompted Glenbard North to give more thought to its conference future.

Bowser, a St. Charles resident, said Glenbard North’s enrollment has gradually decreased from about 2,800 students to 2,400 students in his six years at the school.

“I think in talking to [coaches at Glenbard North], it’s really a combination of changes occurring within the DuPage Valley Conference, that coaches have seen those changes that are occurring, and you combine that with the opportunities that would be available within the Upstate Eight, and I think that’s what caused the interest, the combination of both of those,” Bowser said. “Obviously, both are good conferences, there are strengths and weaknesses within both of them. We’re excited we’re in this position.

“We love being in the DuPage Valley Conference, with what it’s done for our school, but with other opportunities, we want to make sure, in an evolving DuPage Valley Conference, we are weighing all of our options.”

Bowser acknowledged the recent conference maneuvering between the DVC and the UEC has been remarkable.

“I haven’t seen anything around like that in this area,” Bowser said. “It’s been challenging to be a part of. I think both sides are really looking for stability, looking to do what’s best for each individual school as well as what’s best for the conference. It’s taken a lot of communication and a lot of moving pieces. I think it’s been challenging for every-

one involved in trying to do what’s best for their school and still trying to communicate with their conference and be respectful.”

From the UEC’s standpoint, adding Glenbard North would be close to a coup.

It’s close enough to the conference’s geographic sweet spot, and with the coming losses of Metea, Neuqua and Waubonsie, adding a school with strong football and formidable teams in several other sports is especially important.

The UEC will stand at 16 schools in 2014-15 with the arrivals of West Aurora and Glenbard East, then dip to 13 for 2015-16, pending whichever replacement(s) materialize. The UEC could look to add three new members – no shortage of schools have been tossed into the internet rumor mill – or be content with adding Glenbard North or a different school and stick with 14, the number that has been in place since Batavia and Geneva joined in 2010.

Bowser said Glenbard North would join the UEC no sooner than 2015-16, but added that staying put is very much in play.

“There’s been a lot of speculation that we’ve already made a decision – that’s really not the case,” Bowser said. “We’re just trying to look at all of our options and determine what’s best for our school.”

This is no game unfolding between the UEC and the DVC, but it’s starting to feel that way. Even those who weren’t into baseball cards surely can relate.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WOODSTOCK – Early in the fourth quarter Friday, the Marian Central student section started to heckle Marmion forward Tyler Maryanski for missing a slam dunk.

If that was the biggest blemish, then the Cadets must have had a good night.

Marmion held off a mid-game rally by the Hurricanes to earn a 68-57 win Friday in Suburban Christian Conference action. The Cadets (1011, 3-2 SCC) raced to a 15-point lead early in the game and never trailed despite allowing Marian (9-14, 2-3 SCC) to slice the lead to one point in the second quarter.

The Cadets also won the scoring battle thanks in large part to four 3-point baskets from Michael Sheehan, who led the team with 20 points.

Jacob Esp added 14 points for Marmion, while Daniel Bicknell (11 points), Jordan Glasgow (7 points) and Maryanski (7 points) rounded out the Cadets’ top scorers.

North awaits Larkin: At St. Charles, St. Charles North is eager for another crack at Upstate Eight Conference River Division-leading Larkin, which is set to visit the North Stars at 6 p.m. today.

“We’re going to get their best punch, they’re going to get our best punch,” North guard Jake Ludwig said.

“We’ve got to play really good to beat them.”

North – 6-2 in the River compared to Larkin’s 8-0 –

tuned up for the game with Thursday’s 70-61 win at Elgin. The victory was the North Stars’ fifth in sixth games, but also their first action since Jan. 18.

Larkin defeated North, 6954, in Elgin on Dec. 13, closing the game on a 16-0 run.

BOYS BOWLING Geneva’s Soto makes state cut: At St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon, Geneva senior Jason Soto advanced to today’s final two rounds of the IHSA state meet after two rounds Friday. Soto rolled a 1,278 over six games, averaging a 213 to rank 47th. His top effort was a 279 in game 2.

The top 30 individuals from the 12 nonadvancing teams move on.

Soto is the first Geneva athlete to represent the school in the state meet.

“He fought through it, and we will have another shot [today],” Vikings coach Jordan Zimberoff said.

Some children of the 1980s recall many a sleepover centered around trading baseball cards late into the night.

That feverish back-andforth brings to mind the “Let’s Make a Deal” style school-swapping ongoing between the Upstate Eight and DuPage Valley conferences.

Glenbard North is the latest school from one of the conferences to at least flirt with switching sides. If the Carol Stream school ends up switching from the DVC to the UEC, it would add to an already head-spinning volume of recent movement between the two nearby leagues.

To quickly recap the past couple years: Lake Park moved from the UEC to the DVC, and already has been replaced by former DVC member West Chicago. West Aurora and Glenbard East then announced they will leave the DVC for the UEC effective next school year, and then beginning in 2015-16, UEC members Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley will replenish the DVC’s ranks.

That will leave the UEC with an odd number of schools, a scheduling quandary that could be fixed by the UEC poaching Glenbard North from the DVC. Glenbard North athletic director Matt Bowser said discussions with coaches emboldened the school to respond open-endedly to the UEC’s recent letter expressing interest in exploring adding the Panthers to the UEC. Bowser said Glenbard North is in the preliminary stages of investigating the move, with a February meeting planned with the UEC to delve into the possibility in more depth.

Geneva senior Jason Soto recently began working at Bowling Green in West Chicago, where he since has learned the ins-and-outs of operating the shoe rental counter, cleaning lanes and detecting dead wood. Manning the snack bar is next on Soto’s list, but that all can wait until after this weekend, as Soto competes in the IHSA boys bowling state meet at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon. Soto advanced as an individual after a strong sectional alongside teammate Evan Schmidt, who narrowly missed the state cut. Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley spoke with Soto for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat.

Here’s an edited transcript:

How were your nerves at sectionals?

It was a tight race up until after the fifth game.

Everybody kind of broke away. I was 40 pins out of the race, and in then the last game I came back hard and everybody else struggled, so I pulled it out. … It’s three games, an hour break, and

then three more games.

What’s the noise factor like? Are they playing classic rock or jukebox stuff when you’re bowling, or is it dead silent?

During the warmups, they have a little bit of music. Not much. But it’s quiet when people bowl, then if people are on a roll, then obviously you get excited because you try to get the nerves out of you. Everybody’s really cheering each other on, giving high-fives, stuff like that.

What got you into bowling?

My dad [Mark] has been bowling since he was 16. He taught himself how to bowl and got me into it. … As a kid, I might have bowled maybe a handful of times until freshman year.

Why’d you take it on in high school?

In middle school, I wrestled up until sixth grade, and I got tired of it. I started when I was 4 years old. And then I tried basketball. And then when it came time for high school my freshman year, I didn’t have the skills

I’ve always been taught “straighter is greater.” If you don’t cross the lane as much, you have a better chance of getting it straight, less room for error. … I hook it [on spare pick-ups], I just put a little more speed on it to overcompensate.

When you’re walking the halls, are people saying, ‘There goes Soto, the bowler… ?’

to make the team. So my dad said I either had to try bowling or go back to wrestling, and I wasn’t going back to wrestling because I was done with that sport. So I picked up a ball and tried it out.

How much does that speak to your persistence, to go from recreational bowler to state?

You’ve got to bowl yearround. I didn’t bowl yearround until this year. If I would have bowled yearround years beforehand, I’d be, maybe, 10 times better than I am now [Soto’s average has hovered between 210 and 215 this season].

People didn’t start noticing me until [Wednesday], because we got back to school after two days. Because Monday and Tuesday, we didn’t have school. They probably would have said something on Monday.

Are you looking to bowl in college or beyond?

I’ve got to go through college first, that’s the important thing. And then, hopefully, I’ll get to go in

the [Professional Bowlers Association]. If not, I can always go back to looking for [a job]. Because I want to be a gym teacher. … Right now, if I don’t get a scholarship, then I’m going to Waubonsee [Community College], but after two years, I want to either go to the University of Illinois or [Northern Illinois University].

I’m thinking of the ‘Hoosiers’ scene where the coach establishes it’s 10 feet to the basket wherever you go. It’s not completely like that with different bowling houses, right?

It’s how different houses are based, so there’s different kinds of wood, different oil patterns. … The oil can dry faster or your ball slides more. There’s a lot of variations to bowling that people don’t know about.

What’s your style as far as relying on spin?

NEW YORK — Acknowledging the allure of playing for his former coach, Charles Tillman on Friday said he’s “open to all teams” if he can’t re-sign with the Bears.

The Buccaneers hired former Bears coach Lovie Smith last month.

“Obviously, it makes the deal probably a little sweeter just because it’s a former head coach,” said Tillman, a free agent this offseason. “You do know the system, you know the scheme.

“I think it helps it from a standpoint that it’s a former coach, a guy that you liked, a guy that you’d been with for 10 years. It’s cool. But it’s free agency. I’m open to whoever.”

The cornerback hasn’t talked to Smith about his future, but predicted the Buccaneers defense would “eventually lead the league in turnovers” with the coach’s tutelage.

an Urlacher’s assertion this week the Bears were trying to purge Smith’s players.

“I think Lovie just has the opportunity to possibly pick up some other guys, because he’s the head coach in Tampa,” Tillman said Friday. “I think it’s just a timing issue.”

Whether Tillman leaves the only team he’s ever known – for Charles Tillman t h e B u c c a neers or anyone else – is a different question.

He wants to stay in Chicago.

“You know, whatever happens, there will be no bad blood (with the Bears),” he said. “I do not think there will be any bad blood.”

He reaffirmed his desire to retire a Bear; if he goes elsewhere this offseason, Tillman could always sign a ceremonial contract with Chicago at the end of his career.

Tillman compared that scenario the one used by Richard Dent, who was embraced by the Bears despite playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles at the end of his career.

Tillman goes to Halas Hall nearly every day – “Everybody’s happy,” he said – and speaks regularly with coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery.

“I’m just trying to make the best decision, and hopefully the Bears do, too,” he said. “If I get to free agency, so be it. If I don’t, so be it. It’s nothing personal.

“It’s a business. It’s a process.”

His connection to Chicago extended Friday to the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, given to the NFL player best exemplifying on-field performance and off-the-field charity.

For the second time in his career, Tillman is one of three finalists. The winner will be announced today.

It is now known as the commissioner’s “State of the League” address and has become the second biggest event of Super Bowl week trailing only the game itself.

Goodell is very good with the media. Like Rozelle, he has some background in public relations. But, back in the day, the biggest single vehicle to promote the game was the free print media, and the commissioner needed to feed the beast.

Today the NFL is a $10-plus billion industry, growing rapidly and wildly profitable.

The NFL still respects the

media, but the media needs it more than the league needs the media. Real answers to hard questions are nonexistent.

Predictably, the majority of the questioning Friday morning was about the New York experience and the future, if any, of cold weather Super Bowls.

Goodell continued to strongly defend the decision to hold this Super Bowl in New York and talk about what a great experience he thinks it’s been. But the Commissioner was 100 percent noncommittal about the possibility of another “cold weather” Super Bowl.

Equally surprising was the fact there wasn’t a single question asked about officiating. Goodell was asked about possible changes in instant replay – questions

that he dodged – but nothing about the officials.

The commissioner spoke about how thrilled he was that all three games to be played in London in 2014 are already sold out, but said he had no idea what the NFL’s next push into Great Britain and Europe might be.

He was also completely noncommittal about the possibility of future games in Mexico, Brazil and Canada.

In response to a question about a recent study that said concussions were down 13 percent in the NFL, a surprising finding considering all the increased scrutiny, Goodell said it was because of changes in the rules and the culture in the NFL, an answer met with great skepticism by many in the room.

Goodell was quite definite

that the league has no intention of changing its policies on marijuana – synthetic, medicinal or other – until medical science indicates it should. And there is no current evidence that it is close.

The commissioner also assured everyone there was no change in the status of an eventual franchise in Los Angeles, or evidence that St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke is proceeding with efforts to make that move.

Goodell was smooth, engaging and pleasant as could be, but we know no more about the hot button issues surrounding the game today than we knew going in.

Long-range forecast: Super Bowl in Chicago?

CHICAGO – This message is for you, Roger Goodell.

Bring it on.

Bring on the Super Bowl to Soldier Field and its icy lakefront. Bring on the frigid cold and the piles of snow and the howling winds and the biggest game of all.

That’s not my opinion.

That’s the opinion of meteorologists whose jobs revolve around this city’s often crazy, relentless, unforgiving weather.

“Bring it on, yes, 100 percent,” said Cheryl Scott, a meteorologist at NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV. “And then make sure I’m the meteorologist on the sideline reporting on the weather conditions that day.”

Did you catch that, Roger?

On Friday, the NFL’s all-powerful commissioner gave his annual state of the league address to reporters near the site of Super

Bowl XLVIII in New York.

And while Goodell did not commit to having additional outdoor Super Bowls in northern cities, he also indicated that he was open to the possibility.

The next three Super Bowls have been promised to Arizona, San Francisco and Houston, but anything is possible starting in 2018.

That’s good news to Bill Bellis, the chief meteorologist at Fox affiliate WFLDTV. Bellis gave two frozen thumbs up to the prospect of a Super Bowl in the Windy City, where he moved to from Phoenix because, um, … why?

“I didn’t mind playing golf year round,” Bellis said with a chuckle, “but I like climates like this. I know people probably don’t want to hear this, but I love this winter because it’s been a lot of fun forecasting.”

VIEWS Tom Musick And Bellis would be happy to forecast the world’s biggest sporting event.

Before Bellis studied weather patterns, he ran crossing patterns as a wide receiver for two years at Lycoming College, a Division III school in Williamsport, Penn. He recalled a game against Susquehanna with scattered snow and a minus-2 wind chill.

“I was a guy that never believed in wearing gloves as a receiver,” said Bellis, who transferred to Arizona after his sophomore year to earn his degree in meteorology.

“But that was one of those cases when I wore gloves.”

As it turns out, Mother Nature looks as if she’ll cut Super Bowl ticketholders some slack this weekend with temperatures forecast to be in the 40s in New Jersey. But here’s hoping an unexpected dip that could create cold-weather history.

For now, the record for the coldest temperature on the field for a Super Bowl kickoff is 39 degrees Fahrenheit. That record has stood for 42 years, since Super Bowl VI in New Orleans, where Tom Landry’s Dallas Cowboys beat the Miami Dolphins.

Next on the list of chilly kickoffs are Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis (44 degrees), Super Bowl IX in New Orleans (46 degrees) and Super Bowl VIII in Houston (50 degrees). The record high is 84 degrees, set at Super Bowl VII in Los Angeles.

I’m no expert meteorologist – true story: my lowest grade in college came in an introductory course titled “Severe and Unusual Weather” – but I think it’s safe to say Chicago would shatter any Super Bowl record for cold weather. It’s also safe to say Sunday’s game should provide us with a brief distraction from a brutal winter.

As for forecasting a Super Bowl winner, no weather map can help with that.

“I just want a good game,” Scott said with a laugh. “Put on a good game.

“I will be focusing on how many inches of snow we’ll be getting in Chicago.”

Here’s a hint: Too many.

For as long as there have been Super Bowls, the NFL commissioner has met with the assembled media on the Friday before the game.

Back when I first started in the Stone Age, it’d be myself and a few hundred other ink-stained wretches from around the country getting together with Pete Rozelle in the ballroom of the hotel we were all staying in.

Not much has changed over the decades other than the passing of the torch from Rozelle to Paul Tagliabue to Roger Goodell, and the explosion in the number of media with the addition of all our electronic broadcast and digital friends.

Source says Bulls talked to 3 teams

And for a team with big dreams for their roster moving forward, no one on the Bulls roster should be.

That’s what the Luol Deng trade to Cleveland last month symbolized to his former teammates. If Deng could go, well, rent in Chicago, don’t buy.

“I’ve always kind of had that [mentality],’’ veteran guard Kirk Hinrich said Friday. “From the first time that I started hearing rumors it really made clear that the

possibility of being moved is there. You just try and do the best you can with the situation you’re in.

“But enjoy this. Enjoy the situation we’re in right now moving forward because it’s exciting. Just try not to worry about things you can’t control.’’

Hard to do with the calendar now being flipped, and the Feb. 20 trade deadline bearing down on the Association.

Specifically, on the team playing at 1901 W. Madison St. And while Hinrich and Mike Dunleavy have been churning in the trade rumor mill for more than a month, Taj Gibson’s name is the one that is picking up, and could determine how serious the Bulls are in clearing space for a max contract to land the likes of a Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James.

According to a source, the

Lakers, Wizards and Bobcats have each inquired about Gibson, but they were preliminary talks in which the Bulls did not like the return.

If they do move Gibson, however, it will definitely signify how determined the Bulls are to give Derrick Rose a second superTaj Gibson star to play along with.

With Carlos Boozer and his 2014-15 $16.8 million contract likely amnestied this summer, moving Gibson is all but a necessity if the Bulls want to stay under the luxury tax and add a max deal. Gibson will make $8 million next season, $8.5 million in the 2015-16 season, and $8.95 million in his final year of the deal.

While Anthony told the Sun-Times this week that he hasn’t put any thought into

joining the Bulls, there are basketball executives who think differently, as ESPN reported Thursday.

But to land Anthony or James, it will cost the Bulls Gibson, which is a growing possibility in the next three weeks.

Coach Tom Thibodeau said Friday that all is quiet in his talks with general manager Gar Forman and VP of basketball operations John Paxson, but then again, all was quiet before Deng was moved, as well.

“The way that works is this, when something gets close or they think there’s something there that makes sense they’ll come to me,’’ Thibodeau said. “Every conversation that they’re having I don’t know about nor do I want to know about. I think it’s important for me to be focused on the guys we do have.

all normal. We’re going to get calls because we have good players. We have to take those calls because we have to weigh if something makes sense, if something doesn’t. Then if they think it makes sense they’ll get my opinion on it, and that’s all I can ask for.’’

What Hinrich is asking for is to let this current roster ride this thing out. The Bulls went 11-4 in January, and have been playing their best basketball with February starting.

“Yeah, I would like to see this [stay together],’’ Hinrich said. “We’re coming off a very good month, and it’s something I would like to see how far we could keep it going.’’

SPORTS NEIGHBORS BULLETIN BOARD Geneva is starting a kids wrestling club. Coaches from Geneva High School and both Geneva North and Geneva South middle schools are volunteering as coaching staff as well as several dads in the area. Coaches will work with the kids on their technique and overall performance.

There will be several tournaments for the wrestlers to test themselves against local competition.

Practices will be held in the wrestling room at Geneva High School and will start Tuesday and will run through May 22.

There will be no practice the week of spring break, March 31 through April 4.

Savoring the sunlight to beat winter blues I do love a challenge.

For my next feat, I’m determined to like winter in spite of its cold, dark self.

As my friend Michelle says: “Winter, you’re drunk. You need to go home.”

Maybe so, but the thing is, it’s not always cold or dark. And you can enjoy it, too, if you play your cards right.

Take Sunday afternoon, for example.

Remember Sunday? It was sunny. Warm.

A veritable heat wave. Warm enough to enjoy, if one bundled up well, so I did. As one of those people who drops everything whenever the sun makes an appearance, I ran outside and relished it.

Then, inspired by my friend Sally’s earlier mention of cross-country skiing at the Fabyan Forest Preserve (I don’t cross-country ski – I do downhill, but it was too late by the time I realized how warm it was to head to a hill), I dug out my old snowshoes and took them for a spin.

Oh, the memories, as I dusted them off and loosened the straps and realized that they’d last been used by much tinier feet.

Noah’s, in fact, over 10 years ago. I recall that he and I took turns clomping around in the snow near our house in Maine, a few months after I bought them at a yard sale.

He wasn’t around this time, but Holly was, so we took turns clomping around the house until the sun disappeared again.

The next afternoon, though it was too cool for school and far too cold to hang outside, it was still sunny. Not one to waste a sunbeam, I made do, eager as I was for my daily dose of vitamin D. I’ve discovered that when I sit in my car, even when it’s not running and the window is rolled down, it provides an adequate buffer against the cold as long as I’m bundled up and facing the sun. It can be quite

But my neighbors were shoveling their driveway by then, and, trouble was, as it was a cozy, stayhome-from-school-with-the-kids-againkind-of-day, I was still in my pajamas.

My kids were no help. I called them on my cell. You know, from inside my car.

Instead of providing cover, my daughter laughed as she pranced over to our other neighbor’s house for her daily doggie visit there. When I finally slinked back inside, I made a batch of chicken soup.

Hot chicken soup. Yes, another reason to like winter.

I’m lucky. I don’t suffer from seasonal affective disorder, but perhaps that’s because I indulge in my craving for sunlight. I think the thing I most get a kick out of, actually, is that, “Aha! I got some (sun)!” moment I get to have whenever I discover a patch of sun and stop to savor it. (I digress, but I also indulge in my craving for chocolate. Guess what I spotted under my bed whilst doing my little pilates routine Tuesday afternoon?

A new bar of Ghiradelli’s dark chocolate, that’s what. Dang, but that’s my kind of

You’ll get the gist of it. It’s hard to ruin chicken soup, especially true if you stick with organic, freerange, GMO-free ingredients, in my opinion.

It is my goal to present new and thought-provoking ideas in a manner that will encourage you to look at your life in a different way, or provide you with the tools you need to reach out to someone else in need. But, before I begin, I thought it might be helpful to know a little bit about the person behind the words.

I grew up in the western suburb of Glen Ellyn. And although there was plenty to keep us entertained in our own town, my family could always find a good reason to visit our favorite spots along the Fox River. We rarely missed a flea market, always found time for bumper cars at Funway or a walk by the river, and never passed up bargain shopping during the sidewalk sales.

I knew by the time I was 16 what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. It just took one

I attended the University of Illinois for undergraduate school and then Northern Illinois for my master’s degree.

Upon graduating, I fulfilled the childhood promise that I made long before moving to the Fox Valley. I have been practicing in the field of mental health for over 35 years and consider it a great honor to be a part of helping people of all ages and with all types of concerns.

I have written and published columns in newspapers and through social media throughout the upper Midwest, and now bring these personal thoughts and theories to you.

To share a few, let me begin with my belief that we always have choices. We are never truly stuck.

Sometimes what holds us back is not our circumstances, or someone else, but ourselves; and more specifically our lack of understanding of who we really are.

We get in the way of ourselves a lot. Our lives can seem like a scattered puzzle with pieces that don’t fit together well or don’t create a pleasing picture. I believe that we can alter that picture, swap out a few pieces, re-imagine ourselves and make positive changes in our lives. I believe in a commitment to personal growth and that it should be joyfully welcomed; be seen as a gift we give ourselves; as an opportunity to one day witness ourselves at our happiest, our healthiest, our best.

In my column, I will present to you a different way of looking at your life, one that hopefully will empower you

with a better understanding of yourself and your relationships. So, I dedicate this and many more ... to your health and your happiness.

By AL ALEXANDER More Content Now College-set romances traditionally major in minors expelling hormones and vomit in massive quantities. Not “At Middleton.”

It matches two parents stuck in unhappy marriages who, for one carefree day, get a refresher course in puppy love while wreaking havoc on a stodgy university’s sacred institutions.

It’s corny. Dare I say, sophomoric. But stars Vera Farmiga and Andy Garcia are such delightful troublemakers you’d be remiss to deny it a passing grade.

Co-written and directed by newcomer Adam Rodgers, “At Middleton” effectively taps into a college’s ability to inspire new perspectives on the world.

So, it is with Farmiga’s Edith and Garcia’s George, a passive aggressive heart surgeon with a ticker as hard as stone. They’ve come to bucolic Middleton College (actually Gonzaga and Washington State) to introduce their respective 17-year-old offspring (Spencer Lofranco and Farmiga’s look-a-like sister, Taissa) to one of the Northwest’s most prestigious universities.

George, a smotherer, has come willingly; Edith, a free spirit, grudgingly. Naturally, this being a movie about new beginnings, these opposites start

to attract after they wander from the crowd during a campus tour.

What ensues is typical of whirlwind, one-day romances like those in “Before Sunrise” and “Last Chance Harvey” that unfold in a heightened reality where pot smoking, stealing bikes and impromptu performances in front of the drama club are presented as plausible, everyday occurrences.

It’s hard yielding to the film’s incessant quirkiness at first, but Farmiga and Garcia are so committed to the material that you feel like a killjoy if you don’t go along.

You draw the line, though, when Rodgers hints that their equally opposite kids, Lofranco’s Conrad and Taissa Farmiga’s Audrey, might hook-up as well during their half-hearted search for their AWOL parents.

Like his dad and her mom, they are complete opposites. Conrad, an aspiring disc jockey, couldn’t care less about school, while Audrey is unhealthfully obsessed with getting in so she can study under her hero, renowned linguist Roland Emerson (Tom Skerritt).

As hard as the two young actors try, they fail to captivate, not to mention stir chemistry. It’s also hard to get past the fact that Taissa and Vera Farmiga are sisters in real life, not mother and daughter. The strong resemblance

between the siblings was much better used in “Higher Ground,” in which Taissa, 21 years younger, played Vera’s character as a teenager. Here, you can’t help wondering if Vera wasn’t a bit insulted by being asked to play Taissa’s mother.

Yet, both seem to be enjoying themselves, particularly Vera, who, like Garcia, relishes the chance to let herself go acting like a mischievous kid. Her Edith is the ringleader of this devilish duo, but it doesn’t make much prodding to get George to pop open his bowtie and make an endearing fool of himself.

The best thing about “At Middleton” is its bold ending, which completely throws convention to the wind, resulting in several bittersweet moments almost certain to elicit a tear or two. It’s not unlike the Oscar-winning classic “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” which “At Middleton” repeatedly references during George and Edith’s eventful afternoon spent far away from their indifferent spouses and indignant children.

That’s pretty haughty company to tie yourself to, and “At Middleton” doesn’t come close to achieving the gravitas of that Deneuve masterpiece.

But it does cover you in warmth. And what could be more ideal to fend off a frigid winter’s day?

Man stands up for groom’s role in planning Dear Abby: Why is a wedding always about the bride? Why is the groom often ignored and the occasion not about BOTH of them? I find this offensive as a man who, by tradition, is supposed to “take care of her,” but is ignored as a partner in the relationship.

The whole deal about the day being about the bride is sexist, as far as I’m concerned. Television shows like “Bridezillas” make men look like idiots who have no value in a marriage.

What are your thoughts? – Man Who Matters In Florida Dear Man Who Matters: These shows you refer to depend on shock value to attract and sustain an audience, and some of the goings-on that are portrayed are so far-out as to be freakish.

Please don’t mistake reality TV for reality because nothing could be further from the truth.

Much has changed regarding marriage customs in the last decades. Traditionally, weddings

My mother and grandmother are not supportive.

Because you are taking college classes, talk with a counselor at the school about the kinds of job openings there are for special education teachers.

‘Double-jointed’ people are really hypermobile Dear Doctor K: This may be a silly question, but here goes: Do people who are “double-jointed” have twice as many joints?

Dear Reader: I can see how you might think that. If the question is silly it’s because the medical term we use is imprecise and misleading. The term makes it sound as though “double-jointed” people have two joints in places that other people have only one, or that they have twice the normal amount of motion.

Neither is true of people who are double-jointed. In fact, the vast majority of humans have the same number of bones and joints.

So, who are the people that are called double-jointed? Remember that kid in grade school who could bend his thumb backward until it touched his wrist? Or the girl who could wrap her legs behind her head? They might have called themselves double-jointed.

The correct terminology for people with greater than normal flexibility of their joints is “hypermobility.” That simply means the joints (and surrounding structures, including ligaments and tendons) are able to bend farther than average. In most cases, it’s not clear why a person has this extra mobility.

Most people with hypermobility are otherwise normal and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff healthy. Hypermobility can cause problems in people who dislocate their shoulder, hip or kneecap – but most people who have these dislocations are not hypermobile.

Hypermobility is usually harmless. However, there are two uncommon diseases that cause hypermobility and other more serious problems. The first, Marfan’s syndrome, leads to abnormal connective tissue including tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, bones and cartilage.

People with Marfan’s syndrome can have problems involving the heart and major blood vessels, sudden collapse of the lungs, arthritis and problems with the lens and retina of the eyes. The other, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, can also cause weakening of the walls of major blood vessels.

Unusual hypermobility of the joints has been described in people (particularly children) with chronic fatigue syndrome. It also has been reported in people who inherit, or who develop later in life, a disorder of the mitochondria, the little “battery packs”

that provide energy inside every cell in our body.

In most people, flexibility tends to decline with age. A few things may explain this age-related decrease: • Tiny injuries in tendons and ligaments that occur throughout life; • Diminished muscle mass and tone; • Biochemical changes that occur in connective tissues as we age.

That’s not to say that the loss of flexibility is inevitable in all people as they age. Just look at some older yoga masters.

But as for those kids who could wrap their legs around their heads when they were in grade school? Chances are, if you asked them today, they wouldn’t find that trick quite so easy – unless, for some reason, they had been practicing doing it every day.

Teenager given dog by best friend; mother disapproves Dr. Wallace: I really, really need your help.

My best friend moved to Florida. She had the cutest little dog in the world. Every time I visited her house, I would play with FiFi. I loved her, and she loved me.

The day before my friend and her family moved, my friend called me and asked me to come over to her house because she had a big surprise for me. While walking over to my friend’s house, I couldn’t imagine what the surprise might be. When I arrived, I couldn’t believe my eyes!

She had FiFi all dressed in pink and she said she was giving her to me because she knew that I loved her and would be good to her.

I’ve had FiFi for a week, and now my mother is telling me that I’ve got to find another home for her, and if I can’t, then FiFi will have to go to a local animal shelter.

Look at only the North and East hands. South is in three notrump. West leads the heart two: 10, jack, ace. Declarer then runs six club tricks. What discards should East make?

The bidding was interesting.

South might have overcalled one no-trump, showing 15-plus to 18-minus points, a balanced hand and at least one heart stopper.

It would have given a good description of his hand -- but would still probably have reached the right contract from the wrong side. Note that three no-trump by North is unbeatable. (Five clubs

by North is defeated only if East finds a most unlikely spade lead.)

After the two-diamond overcall and three-club advance, South might have cue-bid three hearts, hoping partner would convert to three no-trump with a heart stopper. But would North have treated queen-10-doubleton as sufficient?

Against three no-trump by South, West correctly led his heart two. Lead the lowest from any tripleton when you have not supported partner’s suit. But if you have supported, lead top of nothing, here the seven.

East should realize that if South has the ace and queen of diamonds, the contract is unstoppable. Declarer will take the diamond finesse after running the clubs. So, to speed up play, East’s first discard ought to be the diamond king!

If South does not immediately claim, East then pitches two spades and another diamond.

Here, West clings to a guarded diamond queen and the contract goes down one.
