Elburn tax levy remains the same for 5th consecutive year ELBURN – For the fifth consecutive year, the Elburn Village Board has approved a property tax levy of $824,000.

Board members unanimously approved the tax levy for 2015 at Monday night’s board meeting at Elburn Village Hall. Doug Elder, the village’s finance director, said the amount the village is expected to actually collect should increase a bit because the equalized assessed value is up. In 2014, it was $724,634. In 2015, it is expected to be $739,689, he said.

Elder said it is estimated the cost for an owner of a home valued at $150,000

Wastewater treatment facility news

Board members unanimously approved the next payment – of $921,198.40 – in the village’s wastewater treatment facility modernization project. Work has been underway on the project for months. It ultimately will cost more than $9.6 million. The project is set to be completed by May 19.

Judge rules ZBA hearing on drug treatment center to continue

GENEVA – A Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals hearing on a proposed alcohol and drug treatment center near Campton Hills will go on as scheduled, despite a request from opponents to delay it.

At issue is Maxxam Partners LLC’s petition for a special-use permit to have an alcohol and drug treatment center in the former Glenwood School for Boys, 41W400 Silver Glen Road, Campton Township.

Kane County Associate Judge Robert Villa ruled Tuesday on court papers filed late last week by Abram and Jolene Andrzejewski of Campton Hills, who live next to the property. The Andrzejewskis’ court papers asked the judge to “stay,” or delay the hearing, until the court reviews the ZBA’s Nov. 23 ruling against their appeal.

Tuesday’s appearance took

place at the Kane County courthouse in Geneva.

“The motion to stay is going to be denied,” Villa said.

“It is simply a hearing for the benefit of the public. ...

I think that there are good arguments that you are raising, and there are going to be good defenses that are embraced. The faster those things get resolved, the better for everybody. But I don’t see a reason to delay what would otherwise be an important process ... a public hearing.”

In their initial appeal to the ZBA, the Andrzejewskis asserted that Mark VanKerkhoff, director of the Kane County Development and Community Services Department, skipped steps listed in the county’s zoning ordinance when he allowed the Maxxam Partners petition to continue to the ZBA for a hearing.

The Andrzejewskis also filed a lawsuit asking a judge to review and reverse

the ZBA ruling and to order VanKerkhoff to follow the county’s zoning laws.

Named as plaintiffs are all of the members of the ZBA, VanKerkhoff, Maxxam Partners and Kane County.

Their 12-page complaint restates the arguments that the Andrzejewskis made in their initial appeal. It also asserts a conflict of interest, in that Kane County Board attorney Patrick Kinnally provided legal advice to the ZBA in closed session at the appeal hearing.

Kinnally participated in the appeal hearing, made objections, cross-examined the Andrzejewskis’ expert witness and presented a closing argument on behalf of the county, asking the ZBA to deny the appeal, according to the Andrzejewskis’ court papers.

“Because Mr. Kinnally was an advocate for Kane County in asking the ZBA to deny the appeal, he had a serious conflict of interest,

which prevented him from providing independent legal advice to the ZBA on whether to accept … the revised opinions presented in opposition to the appeal,” according to the Andrzejewskis’ court papers.

Maxxam attorney Keith Brown filed a motion in court to dismiss the Andrzejewskis’ complaint. Both sides agreed to return to court Jan. 7 after they have a chance to file additional court papers on the complaint and motion to dismiss.

The Andrzejewskis also filed court papers seeking a substitution of judge, so their issue started with Judge David Akemann. It then was sent to the presiding judge, James Murphy, who assigned it to Villa.

A ZBA hearing on the Maxxam Partners’ petition is set for 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Kane County Branch Court, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

North alumnus Jeffery Austin makes ‘The Voice’ finale District 303 grad was saved by last-minute viewer votes

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles School District 303 grad on Tuesday was saved by the public to advance to the upcoming finale of NBC’s “The Voice” Season 9 singing competition.

Jeffery Austin was revealed to be the fourth and final contestant to make the finale in the closing seconds of the show’s Tuesday broadcast.

“Is this life?! From one chair to the Finale. Thank you doesn’t cut it. Love you all so much!,” Austin tweeted Tuesday night after the show ended.

No Doubt singer and “Voice” coach Gwen Stefani was the only one of four coaches to turn around her chair during the show’s blind

auditions earlier this year to select Austin for her team.

Austin was one of three people who sang Tuesday to stay in the competition after it was revealed they were up for elimination. Austin performed singer Foy Vance’s song “Make It Rain.”

Austin, who graduated from St. Charles North High School in 2009, is the only member of Stefani’s team to make the finals.

The other remaining singer on the team, Braiden Sunshine, was eliminated Tuesday.

Maroon 5 singer and “Voice” coach Adam Levine had one of his artists, Jordan Smith, make the finals.

Country singer and “Voice” coach Blake Shelton has two artists in the finals – Barrett Baber and Emily Ann Roberts.

Austin and the three other finalists will perform starting at 7 p.m. Monday in the first part of the show’s finale.

The second part of the finale, which the winner of the show will be announced, will air Dec. 15.

The winner of the show will receive a recording contract.

eneva resident Dave Rogers remembers being at a friend’s house when a candle suddenly set fire to a tabletop.

“We got the fire out before it did any significant damage,” Rogers said. “We used a fire extinguisher and water, both. They didn’t have it in a safe container.”

During the holiday season, local police and fire districts use holiday safety campaigns to urge residents to be safe when entertaining, shopping or decorating.

Among the safety tips is to make sure a candle wick is trimmed to a quarter-inch, not to leave lit candles unattended, and to be sure a candle is in a container designed for that use, not just a decorative holder.

“The No. 1 cause of fires is candles,” Fox River and Countryside Fire Rescue District Chief Carl DeLeo said. “The [decorative] glass they have it in heats up and will pop from that radiant heat, throwing shards of glass hotter than 500 degrees

His department and others in the Fox Valley participate in Keep the Wreath Red, a program in which fire houses have a wreath decorated with red lights outside.

When there is a holiday fire, a light is extinguished, so the goal is to keep the wreath red, he said.

There are other safety concerns, DeLeo said, such

as when people climb ladders to hang lights and decorations. No one should climb a ladder without a spotter to hold the ladder, he said.

“We just had a guy who fell off a ladder,” DeLeo said.

“He was trying to hang the lights on the first-floor rain gutters, and he fell. He needed a spotter, someone to hold the ladder.”

Luckily, the man did not have crippling or life-threatening injuries, DeLeo said.

Officials suggest precautions to avoid injury, theft, fire during holiday season

Batavia Battalion Chief Edward Jancauskas advised those hanging lights while on a ladder to keep one hand on the ladder in addition to a spotter.

“Use one hand for the ladder and one hand for the lights,” Jancauskas said.

Other fire safety precautions should include not burning wrapping paper in the fireplace, as it will lead to a residue buildup in the chimney, Jancauskas said, and not leaving a smoker, fryer or outdoor grill unattended.

“Dumping ashes in the garbage can is another cause of fires,” he said.

A decorated tree is another caution, Jancauskas said, as a real tree can dry out and catch fire, and both kinds can burn if an old, frayed string of lights shorts out.

Another aspect of holiday safety is to avoid becoming a crime victim, St. Charles Crime Prevention Officer Bill Tynan said, especially when out shopping for gifts.

“If you’re running around doing gift shopping, try to hide [gifts] in the trunk. If you have an SUV, have it

covered in the back,” Tynan said. “Leave nothing in plain sight.”

Tynan also recommended women not hide their purses in the trunk because organized criminals watch to see who puts a purse there, seeking to steal IDs and checks.

“Their [technique] is to act really quickly. And when they get the stuff they need, they’re going directly to a bank and trying to cash those checks,” Tynan said. “The victim might not know this has happened, especially if they left the car unlocked or until the bank calls.”

Residents also should not leave the boxes from their gifts outside for recycling or trash, Tynan said.

“Cut up your boxes,” Tynan said. “Do not leave big boxes for garbage that may tell potential burglars what is inside the house. Nobody thinks they’re going to become a victim. People feel safe here. We want people to feel that way – but be realistic. We don’t live in a bubble.

Stuff does happen here. It’s all about being mindful of your surroundings.”

‘It’s a huge day’: Colonial Café to match red kettle donations up to $30K all day Saturday

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com When you hear a bell ringer and see a Salvation Army red kettle on Saturday, remember that $1 becomes $2 because it’s Colonial Café Match Day. Donations made to all of the red kettles in St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Aurora, Naperville, Elgin, Algonquin and Crystal Lake on that day will be matched up to $30,000, said Lt. Betsy Clark, officer for the Tri-City Corps.

“It’s a huge day coming up for us … for the entire Fox Valley, from Crystal Lake to Aurora,” she said. “It’s obvious that $1 becomes $2, and that is really helpful for us.”

Clark said The Salvation Army hopes to raise awareness so the public is sure to put donations in red kettles that day.

“We are really excited and can’t wait to see how the community responds. They’re always willing to show up and support us,” Clark said.

The funds will go to support The Salvation Army’s programs and services. Money raised will be shared by The Salvation Army centers,

in St. Charles, Elgin, Aurora and Crystal Lake, Clark said. Colonial Café has seven restaurant locations, including two in St. Charles.

Colonial Café began with a $10,000 match five years ago and gradually increased it, said John Arthur Anderson, whose family owns the Colonial restaurants. Anderson also serves on The Salvation Army board in St. Charles.

“I’m ringing the bell at the Randall Road Colonial this Saturday, and the Anderson family will be ringing there all day,” Anderson said. “On that day, all seven Colonial Cafés will have kettles at their stores and bell-ringing.”

At every red kettle location, bell ringers will give out a card for a free ice cream treat at Colonial, Anderson said.

“We’re going to be giving out 10,000 cards on Saturday,” Anderson said. “With my dad bringing The Salvation Army here, it’s in our blood and we want to keep it going.”

His father, Joe K. Anderson, invited The Salvation Army to St. Charles in 1951, and the Tri-City Corps named its community center, at 1710

S. Seventh Ave., St. Charles, after him.

Clark said The Salvation Army still is looking for volunteer bell ringers.

“We still have more sites available,” Clark said. “We have good groups already committed – school groups, Kiwanis, Rotaries. People are going to be out for us, but we need more.”

ST. CHARLES – A 14day traffic enforcement period in St. Charles netted three driving under the influence arrests, the St. Charles Police Department announced Tuesday in a news release.

The Thanksgiving traffic safety detail, which was Nov. 16 to 29, was done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation and in connection with the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

Additional patrol officers were assigned to enforcement details at night, when impaired driving is more likely to occur, the release stated.

In addition to the DUI arrests, officers issued seven speeding citations, two citations for driving without insurance and two citations for other offenses, including one for underage drinking, according to the release.

The release indicated officers also issued seven written warnings for various violations.

IMRF honors St. Charles East employee for volunteerism

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As part of the Year of the Volunteer – a statewide initiative – the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund asked its membership to submit stories about their volunteerism.

“We got dozens and dozens of letters explaining some of the good work that our members are doing,” IMRF Executive Director Louis Kosiba said.

One of the submissions was from Shelly Kellums, a St. Charles East High School employee who serves as president of the Illinois Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, or COPS. She is one of seven people IMRF will celebrate Thursday at its Year of the Volunteer Award Ceremony in Oak Brook. At that time, one Volunteer of the Year will be announced, and a staff donation of $1,000 will be made to the winner’s preferred service organization.

Kellums said she nominated herself as a way to tell her story and to let people know about her organization, which is dedicated to helping survivors of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.

“I think most people don’t know what we do,” she said.

As part of COPS., Kellums said she has participated in its annual summer bike ride fundraiser, contacted new survivors in the state and attended

officer funerals. The organization also has a memorial team that visits police departments where a line-of-duty death has occurred, she said, noting the team helps run the funeral service, if needed.

“It is very emotionally draining but at the same time very rewarding to give back,” Kellums said.

She said she became involved with COPS. after her brother – and only sibling – died in 2006 in the line of duty in a traffic accident. He was with the Illinois State Police, she said.

Kosiba commended Kellums for funneling the energy from a personal tragedy into something constructive.

“It’s very easy to take a personal tragedy and decide that will rule the rest of your life,” he said.

Although Year of the Volunteer ends with 2015, Kosiba said IMRF looks forward to continuing its spirit to 2016. It plans to highlight service organizations in its newsletters and on its website to better connect people with groups that need assistance, he said.

He said it is heartwarming to know so many of IMRF’s membership – about 110,000 retirees and 173,000 active members – have volunteered.

“There are great, exceptional stories about people doing good within their community,” he said.

Gail I. Fuller, age 78, of Geneva, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2015.

She was born on November 1, 1937 in Brantford, Ontario, the daughter of George and Annie (Gilmour) Hayes.

Gail enjoyed her family more than anything and her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She enjoyed knitting and was an avid reader, reading everything she could get her hands on. Gail was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her children, Beth (Bill) Jones of Geneva, Susan (Jack) Paustian of Kaneville, and Jay (Cathy) Fuller of Geneva; grandchildren, Joshua and Madelyn Jones, Mallory, Stewart, and Haley Stoffregen, and Michael and Matthew Fuller; brother, Bradley Hayes of Canada; dear cousin, Jane Sylver of Canada; and many dear nieces, neph-

Senior club goes above and beyond for community The Batavia Senior Citizens Club has been around since 1969. It serves as a place for seniors ages 55 and up to socialize, make new friends, learn new skills and to become involved. But the group of about 100 seniors has become much more than that. The BSCC is made up of such wonderful and kind people who truly enjoy giving back to the community.

John Faust has been a member of the club since 2008.

He became part of the club after working with Robin Soderquist, recreation supervisor at the Batavia Park District, to offer tax counseling to other seniors. But he also thought it’d be a good time.

“I really wanted to participate in some social activities, and I thought it’d just be a fun thing to do,” Faust said. “I had known Robin a long time, and she also told me there would be some other dancers in the club!”

Faust can be seen every Wednesday night throughout the summer dancing away at the River Rhapsody Concert Series. He always welcomes

“I get so much out of those concerts,” he said. “I’m down there every week because I have such a great time, and I love to dance. I’ve made a lot of friends at the concerts, and the park district does such a great job.”

Stepping up and helping out is something Faust does often. Several years ago, the BSCC needed someone to run for president. Soderquist approached Faust and thought he’d be great for the job.

“I had been a committee volunteer, and I knew I could do the job,” he said. “It’s a demanding job, but it wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle.”

The club meets the third Wednesday of every month at the Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia. Meetings consist of a

board meeting, lunch and entertainment. At each meeting, members also donate money toward different causes. To date, the group has raised $676 for the Batavia Food Pantry, $100 for the Batavia Toy Drive and $200 for the Batavia High School’s performing arts program. The monthly meeting for December will raise money for The Salvation Army.

“The club has really done a lot of community service this year, and they’ve donated to some great causes,” Soderquist said. “We have a great group, and I’m proud of everything they’ve accomplished this year.”

The board will meet starting at 9 a.m. Monday in the Kane County Clerk’s office conference room, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building B, Geneva, according to a news release.

The hearing is open to the public and will be held in accordance with the provisions of the Illinois Open Meetings Act, the release stated.

BATAVIA – The city of Batavia likely will face a backlash from closing its electronics recycling program, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Tuesday.

The Batavia and Geneva public works departments after Dec. 15 no longer will host an electronics recycling dropoff site.

Electronics can continue to be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at St. Charles Public Works, 1405 S. Seventh Ave., St. Charles.

Electronics also can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 12 at the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

The volume of electronics being received at the dropoff locations has grown substantially over the years, with more than 60 percent by weight being large tube TVs that are costly to transport and recycle, according to a news release.

Batavia aldermen were informed Tuesday during their

Committee of the Whole meeting that the county has given the city its 60 days notice of termination for the program.

“I think we’re going to have a lot of problems with this. … I’m anxious to hear what St. Charles has to say about it when they start getting the Batavia and Geneva [drop-off items],” Schielke said.

Schielke said he has heard from several residents who were concerned Batavia would no longer have a dropoff site.

Aldermen Alan Wolff of Ward 2 and Susan Stark of Ward 4 suggested the city explore alternatives to keeping some type of drop-off program operating within the city.

Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm and Ward 2 Alderman Marty Callahan said Batavia residents could use the county’s remaining electronics drop-off sites, even though they are not as convenient.

Ward 7 Alderman Dave Brown said the city can re-visit the issue if electronics become improperly discarded in Batavia following the closing of the drop-off site.

Obama, Congress and war against the Islamic State

By JONATHAN CAPEHART The Washington Post President Barack Obama has the impossible job of calming a freaked-out nation while trying to “destroy ISIL (the Islamic State) and any other organization that tries to harm us,” as he vowed in his Oval Office address Sunday night. And he has to do it in a presidential election year when emotions trump facts, redhot rhetoric passes for policy and rational debate is futile.

Because said task is impossible, Obama’s speech was bound to leave folks unsatisfied. If his tone were an oven setting, it was “pre-heat” while the nation clamors for “broil” in the wake of the Islamic State-inspired slaughter in San Bernadino, California, last week and the Islamic State-directed attacks in Paris last month. Predictably, Republicans leapt on the president like so many Agent Smiths on Neo in “The Matrix.” But I’m going to focus on only one aspect of the president’s address: war.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said, “We need a wartime commander in chief who is ready to lead this country and the free world to victory.” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was more specific when he said he would “direct the Department of Defense to destroy ISIS.” Curious that all these Constitution-loving candidates and other Republicans are willing to let Congress off the hook in its responsibilities in this war against the Islamic State. A war it has never debated but only Congress can officially declare and which it wants Obama to wage without any direct authority granted by it.

The president’s repeated call for Congress to pass a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force was just one paragraph in his 14-minute address. But it is the key to every

Republican demand that he “do something.”

Finally, if Congress believes, as I do, that we are at war with ISIL, it should go ahead and vote to authorize the continued use of military force against these terrorists. For over a year, I have ordered our military to take thousands of airstrikes against ISIL targets. I think it’s time for Congress to vote to demonstrate that the American people are united, and committed, to this fight.

Everything Obama has done against the Islamic State – the special operations forces, the airstrikes – has been conducted by stretching the limits of the 2001 AUMF that gave President George W. Bush the power to go after al-Qaida after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. On Feb. 11, Obama not only sent Congress a request for a new AUMF, but also the draft of one specifically tailored to battling the Islamic State. It has gone nowhere ever since, which makes all the saber-rattling, chest-thumping bravado coming from the GOP the definition of lame.

If the United States is to truly be at war with the Islamic State, then Congress must grant him a new AUMF after engaging in the sober and humbling debate required of it. Declarations of war are their exclusive constitutional duty. For folks who so revere the Constitution, who bleat on about checks and balances and accuse Obama of ignoring them, it is astounding they would willingly cede this power to the executive.

Critics of the president’s actions against the Islamic State would be on much stronger ground if they’d given him what he asked for months ago.

Veteran Kaneland coach Jim McKnight, in his 27th season with the program, attests that the candy bag’s implementation also helps keep a recreational sport enjoyable.

Camaraderie requires long legs when there is no bowling center in your school district.

This perpetuates it among the 12 Knights competing between

the varsity and junior varsity teams.

Despite leading the Knights with a 453 series that included a top game of 154, junior Grace Lindgren couldn’t partake in the snacking this time.

“I just got braces,” Lindgren said.

Kaneland adopted Mardi Gras Lanes as its home course for the 2010-11 season, migrating west of campus and its former home, AMF Valley Lanes in North Aurora, when that facility closed.

A few years later, McKnight found himself needing a jolt.

He endured a rare infection after suffering an animal bite, and the thumb on his right, bowling, hand needed a partial amputation.

Still, McKnight couldn’t fully abandon the sport he grew up relishing and carried into adulthood – sometimes bowling in as many as four adult leagues per week – so now he rolls lefty.

Knights uneven in home loss

By JAMES HIGH editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, as the Knights struggled to corral Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Sycamore down the stretch.

“We cut it to three a couple times and just couldn’t get the bucket when we needed it at the end,” Knights coach Ernie Colombe said. “That’s the game in a nutshell.”

Sycamore sophomore Kate Majerus made three 3-pointers as Sycamore beat Kaneland, 54-49, for its second straight conference win.

Aside from Majerus’s 11 points, the Spartans (4-2, 2-0 NI Big 12 East) also got quality minutes from freshman Maria Wright to go along with the solid play of upperclassmen Lauren Goff, Taiya Hopkins and Madison McGhee.

“I’m very impressed with our underclassmen,” Sycamore coach Brett Goff said.

“That’s why we have them here. They can help us win games like this. Kate played very well tonight, probably her best of the year. Not just on offense, but defensively she really got aggressive as well. And Maria doesn’t play with any fear. That’s why she’s here, and she’s just going to keep getting better.

I’ve got a lot of confidence in that.”

The Spartans never trailed in the game. Thanks to nine first-half points by senior Taiya Hopkins, they led 2517 at the half. Kaneland (6-1, 1-1) closed the score to 36-30 at the end of the third quarter, spreading the ball around after only three Knights scored in the first half.

“We got off to a quick start, and then we got into a little bit of foul trouble,” Colombe said. “They went on a little

In the fourth quarter, it

looked as if Kaneland would mount a comeback. Morgan Weber hit a 3 to bring the Knights within three at 45-42, but Lauren Goff went 4 for 4 at the free throw line and Taryn Mathey also hit two clutch free throws to seal the Spartans’ victory.

“Lauren Goff has been a great leader at the point guard position,” Brett Goff said. “You always need a great leader at that position.

And this is Taiya Hopkins’ fourth year on varsity. In one way or another, they’re all helping out on this team.”

Camri Conley led the Knights with 13 points, while Weber (12) and Vanessa Gould (11) also finished in double figures. Weber and Conley also had three steals apiece.

Aside from Vedder knocking down three 3-pointers – something Ralston said he has the green light to do whenever he has his feet under him – Ralston also lauded junior Matt Johnston’s contributions.

Although he scored just six points, the versatile guard was in charge of locking down Bartlett’s go-to scoring option, 6-foot-4 Robby Jimenez.

While Jimenez managed a 15-point effort, getting a few open looks, Ralston was pleased overall with Johnston’s performance after a shaky all-around game against Streamwood.

“Matt was the MVP for us in this game,” Ralston said.

“He knows he didn’t play all that well last Friday and he was a difference-maker tonight. We felt like if we didn’t

lock down Jimenez, that would open up a lot of things for them. He locked Jimenez down. He got a couple looks, but Matt did a phenomenal job with chasing him off his shots.”

Although the 11-point margin of victory looks decisive, Geneva’s 21 for 33 effort at the free-throw line, which included some key misses during the second and third quarters, kept the Hawks in the game.

WHEATON – Molly Haggerty glanced at a text message from her parents Tuesday morning, and realized within moments that they brought news to celebrate, not anything to fret about.

A package had arrived in the mail congratulating Haggerty, a St. Francis senior, for winning the 2015-16 Gatorade Illinois Volleyball Player of the Year. She also earned the honor last season.

“I found out right when I got to school,” Haggerty said. “It was a nice start.”

A senior outside hitter, Haggerty helped the Spartans to a 39-3 record and the school’s fourth successive IHSA state championship – its first in Class 4A. The 6-foot-1, Wisconsin-bound Haggerty smacked a team-high 467 kills and ranked second on the team with 200

digs.

Her 3.21 grade-point average and volunteering history also stood out to Gatorade officials.

“It’s such an honor,” Haggerty said, “because there’s so many great athletes in Illinois. … I made a goal when I was younger to be Gatorade Player of the Year, and to achieve it, it’s awesome.”

GENEVA – It’s something that Jordan Vedder had always envisioned doing, and he finally got the chance in the third quarter against Bartlett on Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-8 senior got a pass ahead from Bennett Fuzak and had an opportunity for his first varsity dunk. Vedder rose up and threw it down with his right hand, sparking numerous reactions from his Geneva boys basketball teammates on the bench, including the injured Loudon Vollbrecht and Sean Chambers.

The dunk was part of Vedder’s game-high 16 points to lead Geneva past Bartlett, 5039, in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

“I’ve had chances in the past, but that was my firstever dunk on varsity,” Vedder said. “It was a pretty cool feeling for it to go down. I saw

some of the guys on the bench jump up, and it was just a pretty cool moment for me.”

Geneva (5-1) entered its meeting with Bartlett (3-2) after suffering its first loss of the season in dramatic fashion on Friday. A buzzer-beater gave Streamwood a Phil Ralston 50-47 home win, which was not something coach Phil Ralston and the Vikings took lightly.

Ralston said he did not feel his team came with the correct mindset against Streamwood and thought it was a much better effort Tuesday night.

“It was a tough pill to swallow,” Ralston said. “Nothing against Streamwood, but our guys did not come ready to play Friday, and they made us pay. It was a good wake-up call and was good for it to hap-

NOTEWORTHY Poulin returns to North after sickness

St. Charles North coach Tom Poulin suffered a bit of a health scare Friday after leaving school. While feeling just fine during the day, he became ill and was eventually forced to miss the North Stars’ Upstate Eight Conference River Division opener against Batavia.

Poulin’s said it was just the second time he has missed a game in 18 years of coaching.

“As a coach and leader, you feel like you let the team down a little when you’re not able to be there,” Poulin said of his team’s 62-56 road loss to the Bulldogs. “Even with being as sick as I was, I still tried to shower and put my suit on and get ready, but I came to the realization that there was no way I could make it.”

Poulin said he believes it was either some food poisoning or a severe case of the flu, leaning towards the latter with the symptoms he was going through. He said between vomiting, chills and inability to sleep, he felt the flu was more likely the case.

“It’s very difficult, but it’s still fun. … I still like to do it,” McKnight said. “I think I can empathize with the girls and the struggles they go through because now I experience similar challenges. So I can relate to that.”

Senior Melissa Endrenal followed Lindgren with a 427 series while rolling the Knights’ top game with a 173 in her second game.

Junior Natalie Barnhart (374) opened the afternoon with a 153 game, one pin shy of Lindgren’s top effort.

“I think I did pretty well,” Lindgren said. “I could have improved, but other than that, I did pretty well.”

Kaneland has lost both of its conference duals thus far.

DeKalb, which officially was the home team, defeated the Knights, 2,329-2,132, at Mardi Gras last week.

Junior Hannah Jaros paced the Foxes with a 641 series. Her 246 game was the team’s best, beating the top effort of Louisa Washburn (577) by 30 pins in Yorkville’s league opener.

“I felt very confident going into the meet,” Jaros said.

“It felt good to bowl a conference meet again. For it being our first conference meet, I was pretty happy with how it turned out.”

Yorkville is in just its second year as a program, but coach Julie Renda reported an increase in participation this season compared with 2014-15.

18 Quitting smoking is worth

gaining a few extra pounds

Dear Dr. K: I want to quit smoking, but I’m worried about gaining weight. Is it possible to quit smoking without packing on the pounds?

Dear Reader: Smokers do tend to gain some weight when they quit.

Why? Nicotine reduces appetite and revs up metabolism (the rate at which the body burns food). Breaking free of nicotine allows appetite to come back and also slows metabolism. In addition, many people substitute food for cigarettes when they quit.

By definition, an unhealthy weight is not good for your health. But quitting smoking is good for a person’s health.

So the question is: How do the health benefits of quitting smoking compare to the health risks of gaining weight after quitting? Based on studies of hundreds of thousands of people, that question has been answered: Weight gained from quitting smoking does not pose nearly as serious a threat to health as smoking does.

Quitting smoking, for example, lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke and other blood vessel disease despite any subsequent weight gain. The same reduction in risk holds true for people with diabetes. That’s surprising, given gaining weight can worsen diabetes, which increases the risk for cardiovascular disease on its own.

Of course, your risk of heart disease and stroke is reduced even more if you quit smoking and don’t gain weight. But the point is you still benefit from quitting, even if you gain weight.

On average, people gain about five to 10 pounds in the six months after they quit smoking.

But what happens over the 10 years after that?

To answer this question, researchers at the Penn State College of Medi-

They looked at the amount of weight gained over 10 years. Smokers who quit gained an average of 18 pounds over 10 years. Smokers who continued to smoke also gained weight over the long term – an average of eight pounds over 10 years. So, over 10 years, the quitters gained 10 more pounds than those who continued to smoke.

In other words, most of the weight gain in quitters occurred in the first year. And even those who continued to smoke gained weight.

If you’re a smoker and want to quit, you might want to have a plan to keep potential weight gain in check. For example: • Start to exercise before you quit smoking.

Walking is a great way to stay active, lose weight and distract your mind from cigarette cravings.

• If you are overweight already, change your diet now to eat healthier and cut down on total daily calories.

• Carry a water bottle with you and take a sip when you feel hungry or have the urge to smoke.

• Pack healthy, low-calorie snacks that will satisfy the oral urge to smoke or snack. Baby carrots, celery sticks and grapes are good choices.

In sum, the benefits of quitting smoking outweigh the risks of gaining weight after quitting. Don’t let a fear of weight gain stop you from quitting.

3. Hug your children daily

When I encourage him to stop, he says he’ll stop when he’s ready. He rarely drinks the hard stuff, but he sure enjoys his beer.

I don’t mind if he has a couple of beers while watching a football game on the weekend, but I do object to his drinking a six-pack in his apartment after we’ve gone out for dinner. He also has been putting on a lot of extra pounds lately. He now is sporting a noticeable beer belly.

Almost every hard drinker says he can stop whenever he wants to, but “whenever” never arrives. It sounds to me as if it’s time to give your boyfriend an ultimatum: If “whenever” doesn’t arrive immediately, the relationship is over, never to return.

Today’s deal comes from a defensive quiz by Julian Pottage. You are East, defending against four spades. West cashes two top hearts, dropping declarer’s doubleton queen, then continues with the heart jack. Rather than gnash your teeth because partner did not give you a diamond ruff, plan your defense. When you enter the auction after an opponent opens with a pre-empt, assume partner has six or seven points. Here, South jumps to four spades, trusting North to have a useful card or two.

This is much easier on paper than it would be at the table, because you probably took your time to consider your three choices: discard another club, ruff low or ruff high.

Let’s look at each. If you discard, declarer ruffs and plays a spade to dummy’s king. Suppose you play low.

South crosses to his hand with a club and drives out your spade ace. He wins the next club, draws trumps, and claims.

It is the same if you ruff low. But what if you ruff high and lead a club?

Declarer wins and plays a spade to dummy’s king, but must then lead a diamond, which you ruff to defeat the contract.

General summary of Work to be performed: The project consists of furnishing and installing nine (9) pre-assembled relay panel doors containing line, transformer, bus and feeder relaying and metering, removal and replacement of the SCADA remote terminal units (RTU) with a Network Terminal Unit (NTU) at the City of Geneva's, East Side Substation. The project also includes the installation of potential transformers on the two (2) incoming 34.5kV lines and the installation of control house high and low temperature alarms.

Work shall be in accordance with the Bidding Documents, including the Technical Specification, and Drawings, which are on file the City of Geneva. A base set of Bidding Documents consisting of 1 Project Manual and 1 full-size set of Drawings may be obtained from Mr. Aaron Holton, City of Geneva Public Works, Geneva, Illinois, telephone 630-232-1503 upon deposit or payment in the amount of $125.00.
