IHSA: Mooseheart ‘attempting to build a basketball dynasty’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com MOOSEHEART – The Illinois High School Association is appealing a decision by Kane County Circuit Judge David Akemann that would allow Mooseheart High School student Rodrigue Ceda Makindu to play for the Mooseheart boys basketball team. The IHSA filed the appeal Friday in the Illinois Appellate Court’s Second Judicial District.

A decision is expected by

the end of the week, according to a spokesman from the Illinois Appellate Court. The IHSA also filed a request seeking to delay Makindu’s eligibility until after the appeal is heard.

In its appeal, the IHSA wrote that “Mooseheart is, quite clearly, attempting to build a basketball dynasty, not by competing on the same terms as its public and even private school rivals, but by unfairly taking advantage of its unique circumstances resulting from its ability to

draw students from across the globe and educate, feed and house them and even provide them college scholarships, and in the process turning its back on its traditional admission criteria.”

Akemann ruled in favor of an injunction filed on behalf of Makindu, a 6-foot-4 player who is from Congo. The injunction was against the IHSA for not allowing Makindu to play basketball.

The IHSA in January 2013 approved a bylaw stating that international students at-

tending school in Illinois who are not participating in an approved student exchange program “will not be eligible with respect to residence or transfer for the duration of their high school attendance unless they meet the requirements of the applicable provisions of the residency and transfer bylaws, as determined in an official ruling from the executive director.”

Akemann wrote in his ruling that the IHSA fails to define what exactly is an international student.

D-304 OKs 1.5 percent levy increase with 1 no vote, criticism

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva District 304 school board approved its 2014 levy Monday with one member voting against it and a community activist criticizing it.

School board member Michael McCormick voted against it, saying the district should freeze the levy to help taxpayers.

McCormick voted against it last year as well, advocating for no increase.

“I just think at this point, for a year, keep our taxes from going up year after year after year,” McCormick said.

Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Donna Oberg said the district is tak-

ing the full consumer price index increase of 1.5 percent in its levy.

The new levy of nearly $84 million is a 4.41 percent increase over last year’s extension of about $80 million.

A levy is the amount of property taxes a school district or other taxing body requests for the next fiscal year, based on its needs, officials said.

Last month, the board approved a proposed levy.

Officials said they would be spending a little more than they would be taking in as they spend down reserves to abate the district’s debt to keep it from going up too high.

The district’s debt payment for 2014 will be $16.3

million.

Oberg said it would be higher if the board had not taken steps to use reserves to bring it down.

The board majority supported the new levy.

“When I think of that number, 1.5 percent, I think about levying what we need,” board member David Lamb said.

But Bob McQuillan, a co-founder of TaxFACTS, a local taxpayer advocacy group, said the taxpayers have been overtaxed to pay for debt, in particular the 2007 $80 million building referendum approved by voters.

“We know it’s always the same, year after year,” McQuillan said. “ ‘We ask for what we need.’ But then you

also say, ‘We’re abating money.’ And I don’t really care how you look at it or how

you spin it. Abating is overtaxing. … You are asking for more than you need.”

Shadwick King’s jury trial was slated to begin Monday, but on Nov. 19 Judge James Hallock approved Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams’ request to move the trial and assigned a new date of Feb. 2.

Sams requested to continue the case until February because Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory testing of some of the evidence would be ready at that time, according to a motion he filed in November.

King, 47, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen. Her cause of death was ruled to be asphyxiation, Sams said in court in July.

King is accused of killing his wife and then placing her body on Union Pacific railroad tracks less than a halfmile from their Geneva home.

Before this incident, the last reported homicide in Geneva was July 2, 1975, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash confirmed in an email, citing information from Geneva police records.

The state police crime lab is having experts conduct forensic testing, including DNA testing, of physical evidence in the case, Sams wrote in his motion.

“However, because of the backlog at the Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory and testing requirements, no possibility exists that the testing will be completed before the Dec. 8, 2014, trial date,” Sams wrote in the motion. “All of the evidence discussed is material to the case.”

A report on the comparison is being issued by the lab, but has yet to be received, according to the motion.

“The Crime Laboratory has indicated that some of the loose hairs recovered still have the root attached, which would make them suitable for nuclear DNA testing to more precisely identify whose hairs they may be,” Sams wrote in the motion.

Items of evidence recovered

from King’s body during her autopsy went through an initial level of biological testing at the crime lab to determine whether any bodily fluid was present.

At least two items of evidence are being further tested in an attempt to determine whether enough of a suspected but unspecified bodily fluid is present to perform further DNA testing, according to the

motion.

The next court date for the case is Friday which is scheduled to include a hearing to address whether Union Pacific will be required to turn over home addresses of out-of-state witnesses, according to court records.

King has remained in the Kane County Jail since July 8 on a $1.5 million bond, according to online records.

Trying for the perfect Christmas picture. It was rare to see my dad in pictures, as usually he was taking them. However, here my dad used the timing function on the camera.

While that was used correctly, looking to confirm everyone was in the picture must have been a second thought. We are a family of four, and – if you look closely – my brother is part of the family, at least his arm is. I do believe I am wearing the same fancy dress I wore in the ’70s Florida picture. Any excuse to wear a dress and tights.

One of my dad’s first attempts at creative photography. The year is 1970, in our unfinished basement with some sort of drop cloth behind us, that looks like it is ripped and about ready to fall down. My godfather took the picture. I, not unlike my daughter, wanted to be by my mom and was crying before the picture. Unfortunately, this was our family Christmas card in 1970.

At first glance, this picture is very cute.

My daughter, Megan at 20 months, smiling for her Christmas picture.

Here’s the backstory. I was 7 months pregnant. It was very hot in the photo room, and Megan did not want any part of getting this picture taken. The more upset she got, the more sweat I produced, but I was determined to get this done. The solution was that I would lie under the white blanket, and she would sit on me. My belly served as the perfect seat. A first for the photographer. I think we captured it in one take. That is why this is an awkward photo.

Nevertheless, I am very glad I have this one because it is a great story to tell.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 Board members on Monday adopted a 2014 levy and, after a lengthy discussion, put their support behind an average overall tax increase of 1.5 percent.

Board members voted, 5-2, in favor of an estimated aggregate levy of $141,798,092 at their regular monthly meeting.

Board members Judith McConnell and Ed McNally voted no on the motion.

day also voted unanimously to approve a resolution stating their intent to abate – or reduce – the debt service so the overall increase for taxpayers will be limited to an average 1.5 percent increase or less.

The school board in December can only state its intent to abate debt service taxes. Final abatement resolutions and/or certificate will need to be drafted by bond counsel, and those documents will go before the board in March, according to school board policy.

If the board continues to commit to an average 1.5 per-

cent increase, the district might be left with a projected $1.3 million deficit for the remainder of its 2014-15 year. Several factors will affect the actual deficit amount, said Seth Chapman, the district’s assistant superintendent of business services.

Since staffing levels are already set for the year, the district might have to explore reductions in other areas, such as textbooks, school site budget and transportation costs. Since taxes always impact two budget years, the district for part of its 2015-16 budget might have to, for example, reduce staff by the

The campaign was done in cooperation and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation. It ended Nov. 30.

Smith objects to 4 Campton Hills candidates

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills Village President Patsy Smith filed objections to the nominating petitions of four candidates for village offices, seeking to have them removed from the April 7 consolidated election.

Smith objected to the nominating petitions of Michael T. Harry Blecker, who is running for village president, as

well as Trustees Susan George and Laura Andersen, who are seeking re-election, and trustee hopeful Michael O’Dwyer.

O’Dwyer had served on the village’s finance committee.

Four electoral board hearings on the objections are scheduled for 8 p.m. today at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills.

In all of her objections, Smith states the candidates did not circle the proper word

in the statement of candidacy form, gave the wrong date of the election, Feb. 24, and filed the nominating petitions before the Dec. 15 to 22 filing period, among other deficiencies.

Smith has not stated whether she would seek another term as village president. She did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

Blecker said he could not comment and referred questions to his attorney. George and Andersen did not return

voice mail messages seeking comment. O’Dwyer did not have a listed phone number and could not be reached.

Matthew Welch, attorney for Blecker and the other challenged candidates, said he was confident his clients’ names all would appear on the ballot.

“I don’t think they will be sustained,” Welch said of Smith’s objections. “I don’t think they are grounded in law, and at the end of the day, the objections will be denied.

And the candidates, my clients, they will appear on the ballot.”

The three-member Campton Hills Electoral Board will be made up of Trustees Michael Millette and James Kopec and interim village clerk John Strauss. Millette replaces the village president, who cannot serve because of a conflict.

Kopec is a senior trustee.

Millette and Kopec were chosen by drawing lots, according to the hearing notice.

extension for Walgreens

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Enterprises is seeking a second extension of the redevelopment agreement for the proposed new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as it works out more details on the project.

Batavia aldermen are set to discuss the request at today’s Committee of the Whole meeting. Because of the long time frame required to complete the environmental assessments for the project and to negotiate a lease with Walgreens, Batavia Enterprises is seeking an extension with the city, Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said, according to a memo.

In September, aldermen approved extending to Dec. 31 the time frame for Batavia Enterprises to complete its due diligence for the project. As part of the new extension, Batavia Enterprises would have to start on the project by May 1 or the city could terminate the agreement.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from

its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center. Plans are to demolish the former Swanson’s Hardware store/Prairie Path Cycles store at 122 W. Wilson St. to make way for the project.

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza. Batavia aldermen in February approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district. Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it.

Costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated at about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of about $520,250. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

Rolling Stone problems change Cosby context

By ZARA KESSLER Bloomberg News The context of the Bill Cosby discussion has changed in the past few days. The shift has little to do with Cosby or his lawyer or the heap of accusations against the entertainer by alleged victims of sexual assault. It has everything to do with Rolling Stone, Sabrina Rubin Erdely and a young woman going by the nickname Jackie.

Jackie told Erdely a story about being gang-raped at the University of Virginia.

The magazine now has issued a note to readers explaining, “In the face of new information reported by the Washington Post and other news outlets, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie’s account.” The note, from managing editor Will Dana, concluded, “We apologize to anyone who was affected by the story and we will continue to investigate the events of that evening.”

Cosby was affected by the story. Allegations against Cosby took off around the same time as Rolling Stone’s rape article was published.

Together, the two narratives made the issue of sexual-assault impossible to ignore, with each horrific story of alleged male privilege run amok implicitly buttressing the other.

So what did or didn’t happen at UVA now colors Cosby’s story – and the stories told by his alleged victims.

That shouldn’t be the case.

The comedian has acquired

a long list of accusers, many of whose allegations are strikingly similar. The inevitable question is whether the similarities are beccause of Cosby’s predatory modus operandi or to a copycat phenomenon enabled by news media.

Suddenly, every Cosby accuser is a potential “Jackie” – although we don’t yet know precisely what it means to be a “Jackie.” How honest are the intentions of Cosby’s accusers? (One woman is alleged to have tried to extort the comedian.) How fallible are some of their memories all this time later? How accurate are those specific quotes? We don’t know. In some instances, we can’t know.

We fill the void with personal experience, sometimes known as “bias.”

Presumably, people have taken the time to realize exactly what they’re rooting for. In both the UVA and Cosby cases the possible truths stretch from ghastly crimes to horrible slanders. No one should anticipate any potential outcome with excitement.

There is no reason to feel “good” about anything here.

The Cosby and UVA stories are not over. What happens in one will continue to shape the context in which we interpret the other. We might inch closer to the truth in one or both cases. But if there was an opportunity for broader understanding and a sense of shared purpose in combating sexual violence, it seems pretty clear by now that we’ve lost it.

Bulldogs in shape to compete Squad has been competitive during tough stretch thanks to its commitment to conditioning

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Eight simple rules for maintaining a safe and healthy Batavia wrestling room hang on a sign above the entrance.

With the established bylaws – no outside food, drink or gum – come the unwritten ones: Enter with a good base of physical fitness.

As the season approaches its second month, most in the mat room have the basics down pat. The athletes who devoted their summers to training with an offseason club, however, already boasted a leg (or arm or wrist or torso) up.

“A summer workout’s not nearly as hard. The workouts in the room are way harder. But it’s expected,” sophomore 138-pounder Joe Posledni said.

“But just the fact of having a summer workout, I wasn’t dying the first day of practice. I was ready to go.”

Following its usual pattern, Batavia scheduled a handful of traditional powers in the early season, including Glenbard North and Lyons, who qualified for last season’s Class 3A team duals state tournament.

Although coach Scott Bayer acknowledges “we’ve had a couple good outings and we’ve had a couple bad outings,” the overlying theme is that the Bulldogs have competed.

To Bayer, that’s a testament to the team’s commitment to conditioning, even for those multi-sport athletes who might not have the opportunity for summer training with groups such as Naperville-based Overtime or Iron Sharpens Iron.

“I don’t know if we’re battle-tested yet. I guess we’ll find out. But we definitely have wrestled some tough competition,” Bayer said. “We’ve gotten our rear ends handed to us, which I think is a good gauge, you know. I

Sophomore Seth Winkle (126), who trained with Overtime in the summer, still seems to favor an “iron sharpens iron” ethic when talking about the challenges of facing fellow practice partners who had busy offseasons.

He regularly spars with Posledni and brothers Michael and Dylan Dor-

anski, among others.

“I’ve got some tough training partners in there, too, that are also in good shape, so they push me pretty hard,” Winkle said. “But usually by the end of practice, I feel like I could keep going. I could go for a little longer, usually.”

In a sport predicated on training to wrestle a full six minutes – the length of a regulation match without overtime – the more time and reps, the better.

Winkle estimates he wrestled at least 30 matches, almost the length of another full season, during the summer. His itinerary included qualifying for the famed Fargo (N.D.) Nationals with Team Illinois in July.

“Fargo really helped me grow, because those guys out there are a lot of state placers and all-Americans and stuff,” Winkle said. “So it let me see how much I need to improve before I try to make it downstate this year.”

and were looking for their sixth win of the season.

Instead, St. Francis rewrote the story, storming back to send the game to overtime tied at 44, where the Spartans (5-3) outscored their guests, 15-3, for the 59-47 win.

“I just think we finally played the kind of defense that

we have been trying to play,” St. Francis coach Mike Phillips said. “I think they got worn down a little bit and it just came out on our side. The final score isn’t indicative of how close it was, obviously, until overtime.

It could have gone either way, so I’m pleased with the effort.”

The overtime period capped

a miraculous rally and furious final minute of play in the fourth quarter from both sides.

With 44.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter, after the Spartans had tied the score at 40, senior guard Elinor Cycenas committed a backcourt violation.

Lenski, TrackMan help golfers get in swing ST. CHARLES – Having witnessed another golf student hit a 7-iron in sequence, Pat Lenski sauntered to a computer monitor and summoned his pupil.

Lenski’s mouse arrow settled over a file named for Justin Rose, the world’s fifth-ranked golfer, and a quick double-click opened footage of Rose’s swing.

At that point, the student grew heady, although his own junkyard hacks before and after that time realistically should have prevented much pride protruding from this stall at Elite Sports Training Center.

“There’s a number of ways to swing a golf club, but all the great players are getting to the same spot in the swing at the moment of truth, if you will,” Lenski later told the student.

“We just haven’t been in a lot of games like that with this kind of pressure,” Phillips said. “We didn’t handle it very well on the turnover, but she had enough moxie to get the ball back and make a big play, so kudos to her.”

Sproat knocked down both free throws, but Warriors guard Jamie Netzley quickly countered.

With 14.6 seconds left and the score tied at 42, Spartans senior guard Regan Kasprak gave St. Francis the lead back, but Netzley converted with three seconds remaining on two more of her team-high 15 points on the night to force overtime.

Antwainette Walker was shut out in the first half, but the freshman forward was dominant in the second half.

Navigato in top form for Vikings Senior wing scores 30 points

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Capitalizing on good positioning behind its muses’ bench, the Geneva student section peppered the Vikings boys basketball team with plenty of pregame encouragement Saturday.

Fittingly, one outburst stood out above the rest: “WHY ARE YOU SO TALL?!?”

Geneva’s formidable front line earns plenty of attention, to be certain, but with a group still searching for an early season identity amid injuries and lineup shuffling, it’s not the team’s lone asset. A 5840 victory against Upstate Eight Conference River Division archival Batavia offered the latest proof.

“Even if our offense isn’t run crisp, we know that we can still score the basketball,” Vikings senior wing Nate Navigato said. “We have a lot of players on the team who can score the ball, inside and out. So it’s definitely a very, very good thing.”

No question, another boon for the Vikings (5-0, 1-0) is Navigato, a versatile, Buffalo-bound standout whom Geneva coach Phil Ralston

called “probably the most unselfish 30-point scorer you’ll ever find.”

That was Navigato’s game-high offensive output against Batavia (4-2, 0-2), which fell behind by double digits early but rallied back to within three points on Canaan Coffey’s 3-pointer midway through the third quarter.

“They were really trying to dissect us inside and we pushed them out a little bit, and I think we were able to make them uncomfortable in everything they were doing,” Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos said.

“Fourth quarter, a little mini-run there with Navigato getting loose, it ends up being 10, 12 points.”

Geneva started distancing itself after a timeout after Coffey’s 3.

In Ralston’s view, the Vikings were allowing the Bulldogs’ pressure and raucous home atmosphere to interfere with their game plan of controlling the tempo.

Perhaps the most demonstrative exhibit came with 5:47 left in the third quarter, when referees whistled Vikings 6-foot-8 junior post Loudon Vollbrecht for a technical foul as he took exception with the offensive foul he’d been charged with moments before.

Now saddled with four fouls, Vollbrecht (11 points, seven rebounds) took a seat on the bench and began watching his teammates emerge.

One of them, senior Mike Landi,

finished with 14 points in his first game of the season. Landi suffered a concussion in Geneva’s quarterfinal playoff football loss to CaryGrove three weeks ago.

“Any time you beat Batavia at Batavia, you had to play well,” Ralston said. “But there’s not a lot of what we did that was polished.

This was all guts, determination, aggressiveness. And that’s really what the timeout was about. It’s, ‘Hey. Remember what we said we had to do when we came in here.

We had to come in here and play aggressive.’ ” Vikings junior Sean Chambers, starting in Geneva’s backcourt alongside teammate Daniel Santacaterina, had 10 rebounds.

The Vikings played without 6-10 senior Chandler Fuzak (ankle injury) and remain without injured guard Pace Temple.

Coffey (11 points) and Chasen Peez (10) finished in double figures for Batavia, which was less than 24 hours removed from a narrow home loss to West Chicago in its conference opener.

“You know what, I love our group. I think we’re going to go a certain way,” Nazos said. “A rough weekend, but there’s a lot of good here, and we’re going to build on the good and look at some of the Sean King for Shaw Media bad and correct.”

Saints post 2nd win over North Stars at home

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If St. Charles East’s gymnasium is beginning to feel claustrophobic to the St. Charles North boys basketball team, the North Stars can be excused.

All five games North has played this season have been at East, and the North Stars have hit a rough patch – especially when the host Saints are providing the opposition.

For the second straight Saturday night, East handed North a double-digit defeat, this time 72-62 in a game the Saints led by 22 points after three quarters.

The Saints (5-1, 2-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) capped an impressive weekend after winning at two-time defending champion Larkin the night before. Eleven Saints scored on the night even as East remained without starter James McQuillan (concussion).

“I think we showed that we have a lot of weapons,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “It’s hard getting some kids in the game. We have 160 minutes and we probably have 10 guys that we can play night in, night out.”

Containing East point guard Cole Gentry again proved a tall order for the North Stars.

North (2-3, 0-1) trailed by only two after the first quarter, but with Ludwig sitting the entire second quarter, the Saints’ lead swelled to 37-22 by halftime, with much of their separation coming in a fruitful final 90 seconds of the half.

“Maybe you leave [Ludwig] in in that situation, but when you believe in your bench and you believe in your depth, you don’t,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “Plus, until the end of that half, it was six, eight points, which is manageable.”

Gentry scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second quarter and made four of

his six shots from 3-point land before sitting the entire fourth quarter. Gentry’s penchant for beating his man off the dribble creates plenty of room to fire away, and he often cashes in.

“They were going under the ball screens. … I had lots of room to shoot, so it was good, and, thankfully, a few of them went in, so that was nice, too,” Gentry said.

Junior Evan DiLeonardi scored 12 points while Mick Vyzral, Jack Bronec and Jake Clodi scored eight points apiece for the Saints, who drilled North, 70-49, last week for third place in the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament.

mon Osborne scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to pace North. Another reserve, Jarod Karom, added nine points while usual North stalwarts Jack Callaghan (eight) and Ludwig (six) had relatively quiet nights.

Poulin said the North Stars have plenty of time to find their way.

“This is part of the process, and if anyone thinks the process ends in December, they’re sadly mistaken,” Poulin said.

“We’re a good basketball team and we’re going to be a good basketball team. When it’s all said and done, people will understand that and respect this group.”

Saints overtake North Stars late

ST. CHARLES – Lots of experienced talent on both sides of the floor factored into Saturday’s St. Charles East-St. Charles North girls basketball game.

Come the second half of a tense crosstown matchup, however, it was East freshman post player Sara Rosenfeldt who rose to the occasion most.

Rosenfeldt scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half, spearheading East’s 56-52, comeback Upstate Eight Conference River win.

“I told her, ‘You certainly didn’t play like a freshman,’ and she hasn’t yet,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “She’s a special player for sure.”

North seemed to take control of the game with a 16-2 burst to start the second quarter, putting the North Stars on top, 24-13.

But East (6-1, 2-0) addressed its first-half rebounding woes and revved up its offense considerably, slicing an eightpoint halftime deficit in half by the end of a physical third quarter and continuing its surge down the stretch.

“I know not just me, everyone wanted to win this game so badly, and we were going to do anything to win it, even though we were down at half,” said Rosenfeldt, who added seven rebounds.

Rosenfeldt wasn’t the only underclassman to sparkle for the Saints. Sophomore guard Samantha Munroe’s first points of the night were enormous; she drilled an open 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:27 to play, putting East ahead for good at 50-47.

“We need players who are not afraid to take that shot,” Drumtra said.

East senior guard Katie Claussner, who finished with 14 points despite struggling with her shooting touch, lauded the youngsters for their crucial contributions.

North (3-3, 0-2) was paced by senior wing Nichole Davidson, who scored 21 points to go with 10 rebounds and supplied North’s final lead on a threepoint play that put her team up, 47-45, with 1:59 to go.

But Claussner regrouped from her earlier free-throw woes to make a pair to tie the score at 47, and Munroe hit the shot of the night shortly thereafter.

The Saints were down double figures in the rebounding race at halftime, by which time North’s Morgan Rosencrants and Davidson already had combined for 17 rebounds.

But East cleaned up that deficiency markedly in the second half.

“Part of that was when we were in a zone,” Drumtra said.

“We don’t rebound too well out of a zone. When we went man, it was a little bit easier for us to rebound out of.”

It was the second difficult loss this week for the North Stars, who fell by two points to Geneva. This one was even tougher because the North Stars led much of the game.

“Postmodernist” is one of the newest styles in the United States. Walt Disney World’s Swan Hotel, with a 47-foot swan on each side of the roof, and its Dolphin Hotel with two 56-foot dolphins on the roof, are examples.

Michael Graves, the architect of these buildings, also designed kitchenware, furniture, jewelry and hospital furnishings in his unusual style. His teapot with the whistling bird is so wellknown that he made a less-expensive copy with a whistling whistle. Graves designed his first furniture in the 1970s, and by 1982 he was winning awards for his designs. His modernist furniture was made in geometric shapes with features added in colors that included blue, orange and brown.

One 1980s table was made of maple, painted plastic, painted wood, brass and glass. It is unmarked, like many of his designs. In spite of signs of wear and a few chips, the table sold for $3,840 at a Rago auction in October 2014. *** Q: I have a teapot and two matching cups and saucers. The mark on the bottom is crossed swords with an “S” below. Can you identify the maker?

A: Samson & Co. of Paris, used a crossed swords mark with the letter “S” below the swords from about 1873 until about 1905. The use of crossed swords as a mark was started in about 1725 by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Meissen, Germany. It has been used by many other companies since then. Samson & Co. was in business in Paris from about 1873 to 1969. The company made copies of Meissen and other china, often used as replacements for older pieces. ***

Q: I would like to know if there’s any value to “Gone With the Wind” playing cards. There is a picture of Clark Gable as Rhett Butler on one deck and a picture of Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara on the other deck.

The cards don’t look like they have ever been used and are in a tin with a picture of the couple kissing on the front. The bottom of the tin is stamped “The Heirloom Tradition, No. 144109.”

There are three dates on the back, 1939, 1967 and 1989. Is there any value to these cards?

A: Your decks of cards were issued in 1989 to mark the 50th anniversary of the movie, “Gone With the Wind.” The movie, first released in 1939, was re-released in 1967. The only way to guarantee that the cards have never been used is if they are still sealed in plastic wrap. This set of two decks of cards in its tin often sells online for $4 to $10. *** Q: I have a plate marked on the back “La Seynie, Limoges, P&P, France.” There is another stamp, “Pat March 3rd 1909,” and also the name “Dubarry.” The plate has gold scalloped edges and pictures palms with a lake. How old is it?

A: The Paroutaud Freres company used the initials “P & P” (for brothers Pierre and Paul Paroutaud) and its location, “LaSeynie [the factory], Limoges [the city], France” as a mark from about 1903 to 1917. The patent date is the date the design was patented.

Dubarry is either the pattern name or the decorator’s name. *** Q: I have a Hilda doll marked “JDK 1914.” The doll has several other marks, one in German, and numbers on the back of her neck. Can you tell me about the doll and how I might go about selling it?

A: “JDK” stands for J.D. Kestner

Co., a well-known German dollmaker that operated in Waltershausen, Germany, from 1805 until 1938. The company started making dolls in 1820. During the 19th century, Kestner made high-quality papier-mache doll heads and bodies, leather doll bodies, molded-hair china-head dolls with china limbs, celluloid dolls, kewpies and Bye-Lo babies. In the early 1880s, Kestner began to make dolls with bisque heads on jointed composition bodies. This is the type of doll

that made Kestner famous, particularly since the company was the only German dollmaker that made both heads and bodies. The Hilda character doll was introduced in 1914. With peachtinted cheeks, real hair eyelashes, a pug nose and an open mouth with two tiny upper teeth, Hilda dolls are wanted by doll collectors. They have sold for $900 to over $5,000, depending on the doll’s size, details and condition. The numbers on your doll’s neck are mold and size-code numbers, which will help further identify your Hilda. Old dolls in great condition sell quickly at auctions that specialize in dolls, such as Theriault’s of Annapolis, Md.; McMasters Harris-Appletree Auctions of Newark, Ohio; and Frasher’s Doll Auction of Oak Grove, Missouri. *** Q: I have a Firestone rubbertire ashtray from the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The tire is a Firestone Champion. A glass ashtray fits inside the rubber tire. The glass is etched with the Trylon and Perisphere and reads, “New York World’s Fair.” Does the ashtray have any value to a collector?

In 1987, ten years after the death of her husband, Rosa founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development. One of its programs takes young people of different ethnicities on tours of North American places historically important to the Civil Rights Movement.

How would you suggest a young person like me (I am 13) confront a close family member about something like this, especially since I’m not sure? I found an antidepressant prescribed for my mother. As long as I can remember, she has been a happy and upbeat person, and I have no reason to suspect she’s depressed. I’m worried she may be abusing the medication.

I have never felt comfortable asking questions, so it would not be easy for me to ask her. Please help. I now have trouble even speaking to her. Iron deficiency in teenage girls is easily treated Dear Doctor K: My teenage daughter recently learned that she has iron deficiency and anemia.

Why would her iron be low? What is the treatment?

Dear Reader: Anemia means that the blood does not have enough red blood cells. These cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. There are many kinds of anemia. In the United States, iron-deficiency anemia is the most common; it occurs when the body does not have enough iron to make red blood cells.

What’s the connection between iron and red blood cells? Inside every red blood cell is the protein called hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to every cell in your body.

Oxygen is an essential source of energy to every cell.

Iron is a part of hemoglobin.

Most of the iron in the body is in the hemoglobin (and a similar protein in muscle called myoglobin).

Iron enters our body in food and leaves the body primarily when we bleed. Bleeding causes the loss of red blood cells and a lot of iron. That’s why teenage girls are particularly susceptible to iron-deficiency anemia: They have begun to have monthly menstrual bleeding. Each month they lose blood and iron. If your daughter doesn’t eat enough iron-rich foods, she will gradually develop iron

Symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia are not usually obvious unless the problem is severe or long-lasting. If that’s the case, symptoms may include pale skin, tiredness, dizziness, lightheadedness, headaches or ringing in the ears. The condition is diagnosed with a blood test.

Iron-deficiency anemia is usually treated with iron supplements, taken by mouth for several months. The doctor will do follow-up blood tests to make sure the anemia has gone away or at least is improving.

Iron is best absorbed when given between meals. Encourage your daughter to take her iron supplement mid-morning, between breakfast and lunch, or mid-afternoon, between lunch and dinner.

Vitamin C makes it easier for the body to absorb iron. But calcium makes it harder, so your daughter should not take her supplement with milk. It may work best taken with foods or drinks that are high in vitamin C such as fruits, vegetables and orange juice.

Warn your daughter not to take

more than the recommended dose of iron, as higher doses can be dangerous. Some people are vulnerable to developing iron overload.

You should also try to increase the amount of iron-rich foods in your daughter’s diet. These include: • Lean meats, poultry and fish • Iron-fortified cereals, breads and pasta • Dried fruits (apricots, raisins, prunes) • Leafy green vegetables (spinach, collard greens, kale) • Whole grains (brown rice, wheat germ, bran muffins) • Beans, peas and nuts • Eggs Teenage girls who have begun to have menstrual periods can help prevent iron-deficiency anemia by taking a multivitamin with iron.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for iron is 8 milligrams (mg) per day for females ages 9 to 13 years, and 15 mg per day for females ages 14 to 18 years.

Iron deficiency in teenage girls is common, easily diagnosed and easily treated. Your daughter should be fine.

Car accident caused by speed Dr. Wallace: Our 16-year-old son recently earned his driving permit. As a parent, I suffer every second our son is driving because I am fully aware that teens feel invincible and are fearless.

I’ve been following your teen column for over 10 years. The one column that left a lifetime impression on me was the one where you wrote about traveling by auto and reading about several teens being killed somewhere out West. I remember clearly that the accident was caused by excess speed. I will be forever grateful if you would run that column again. I want my son to read it. – Mother, Columbus, Ohio Dear Mother: I remember the column. Let’s hope the following will encourage your son and other teens to be extra cautious drivers: Dear Teens: I usually travel by plane for long distances, but recently my wife and I decided to drive from California to Indiana to renew our belief that America is the most beautiful country on earth. We were not disappointed. From the overpowering magnificence of the Grand Canyon to the unique beauty of the Petrified Forest, we have much to be thankful for.

In Amarillo, Texas, we stopped to fill the gas tank and I picked up a daily newspaper. I’m what you would call a “newspaper junkie.” When traveling by car, I buy newspapers all along the route to learn the local news in many towns and cities.

When I picked up the Amarillo Sunday News Globe, the headline made me shudder; “Four teenagers die in two-truck collision.” There were two teens each in two trucks that collided head on a few miles outside of town.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Although there were no witnesses, highway patrol officers, by observing the wreckage, were pretty certain that both trucks were speeding.

Airbags deployed in both trucks and all four teens were wearing seatbelts, but still, they all died.

“Sometimes wrecks are so horrible that nothing could have prevented the deaths,” one of the officers said.

Could this devastating accident have been prevented? Yes! The accident happened on a clear, dry day at 3 p.m.

The trucks collided at the crest of a hill when one crossed the centerline.

The superintendent of the school district where the dead teens attended school said a memorial assembly would be held where classmates could meet with counselors and clergy and have a chance to express their grief.

Four precious young lives were snuffed out in a split second of negligence.

Teens have the physical skills to be superb drivers, and most are, but still, there are many who, when they are behind the wheel, feel they are invincible. Unfortunately, they are only flesh and blood, and these elements shatter and spill easily.

Teens, drive with care; a motor vehicle is a lethal weapon when the driver is not in complete control.

In this case, the seatbelts didn’t prevent death, but in many collisions they do prevent serious injury and death. So always buckle up and never drive when impaired with drugs or alcohol.

Look at the East hand. South opens one diamond, West makes an aggressive takeout double, and North passes. What should East do?

Assuming he is unable to bid in no-trump, an unpassed hand usually makes one of these advances: nonjump in a suit, 0-8 points; single jump in a suit, 9-11; cue-bid of opener’s suit, 12-plus.

However, these numbers should include short-suit points when at least an eight-card fit is known.

So, even if East discounts the diamond queen, his hand is worth 13 points: 10 high-card points and three for the singleton diamond.

This means that East should cuebid two diamonds.

South would rebid two hearts, West would double or pass, North would correct back to three diamonds, and now East can jump to four spades.

If South sacrifices in five diamonds, West should double and collect 500.

Four spades makes easily, losing one spade, one heart and one diamond.

At the table, East only jumped to two spades. South rebid three diamonds, East competed with three spades, South – not reading the vibes correctly – went to four diamonds, and, luckily for him, all passed. Down one was a great result.
