Retiring library director celebrated at reception

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Diana Brown – whose name for some is synonymous with the St. Charles Public Library – celebrated 39 years of service Sunday during a retirement reception held in her honor.

“It’s just been a wonderful, wonderful experience,” Brown said.

Brown, who has served as library director for 35 years, is retiring at the end of the year.

In a brief program, representatives from the St. Charles Public Library District Board of Trustees, St. Charles Public Library Foundation and the city commended Brown for her service.

“We simply cannot thank you enough, Diana,” said Roman Seckel, foundation president.

Mayor Ray Rogina read from a proclamation honoring Brown’s dedication and leadership to the community.

“Diana Brown’s leadership has Ray Rogina caused the St. Charles St. Charles Public Library to bemayor come an integral part of the fabric and culture of the city of St. Charles,” Rogina said. “… Diana Brown has accomplished all of this while leading with creativity, foresight, respect and integrity.”

With her 6-month-old grandson, George, never too far away, Brown spent the reception greeting well-wishers, including Anne Craig, the director of the Illinois State Library at Illinois Secretary of State.

The St. Charles High School alumna said her parents – both librarians – were good friends with Brown. She was “beyond kind” to them when they got older, Craig said, noting she and her brother had moved out of town.

“She is just a dear, dear, dear person,” Craig said. “I know the com-

Pam Salomone, the library’s communications and marketing manager, said Brown does what she does from the heart – not so that she can receive accolades.

“It’s been an honor to work with her,” Salomone said.

Youth Services Manager A. Denise Farrugia said in 25 years her department has grown both in staff – three employees to 16 – and in collection size, which is over 140,000 items.

She said Brown enabled the growth by fully supporting the department so that it could be responsive to the community’s needs.

Farrugia described the St. Charles Public Library and community as “such a perfect fit” for Brown, and Salomone added that – for many – the library and Brown are interchangeable.

“Everything the library is is because of Diana,” library board President Tory Haines said.

Colin Brown – Brown’s son – said his mother’s work with the library was an avenue for her to serve the community.

“We’re all proud of her,” he said.

Morton Grove Public Library Director Pam Leffler has been chosen as Brown’s successor. She is expected to begin Jan. 2.

“The board at this time has decided that it’s best to monitor Matt’s leave,” she said. “Right now we’re not going to be bringing in an interim director.”

Teske has been on leave since mid-November and was scheduled to

return Dec. 2. Steel has said his leave has been extended to Dec. 16.

Assistant Director Peggy Carlson has been standing in for Teske, as she does when he is on vacation, officials have said.

But, she said, two of the three breakfast times sold out – each could accommodate about 150 people – and at one point about 200 people were in the Community Building during a performance by the Kaneland Youth Orchestra.

And, judging by the number of brochures taken at John Shields Elementary School, Baker estimated attendance there had reached 400 by

noon.

“It has been going very well,” Baker said while overseeing the raffle table among the holiday craft show vendors.

In another room, several children, including 6-yearold Nicholas Casey, gathered around a storyteller reading a holiday tale.

“We come every year,” the Sugar Grove boy’s mother, Cara Casey, said.

In addition to liking the

craft vendors, she said, they enjoy decorating cookies with Mrs. Claus and the library’s activities. It also is easier to get a picture with Santa at Holiday in the Grove than at a mall, Casey said.

Rudy Zeithammel of Lombard brought his daughter, 2½-year-old Grace, to the event to socialize with friends from Sugar Grove.

While the father and daughter didn’t make it for breakfast, the girl got her

picture taken with Santa, Zeithammel said. He noted they planned to spend about half a day there before partaking in holiday events in their hometown.

Planning for next year’s Holiday in the Grove – set for Dec. 6 – begins in January, Baker said. While the volunteers have been fabulous, she said the organizing committee needs more members. For those interested in signing up, visit holidayinthegrove.com.

St. Charles teacher facing child porn charges submits resignation

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles middle school teacher accused of having and distributing child pornography has submitted his resignation.

The St. Charles School District 303 Board is expected to act tonight on Jerome McCauley’s resignation, effective Dec. 3, according to agenda documents. It is part of the personnel report, which is on the meeting’s consent agenda.

The board meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the District Administration Center, 201 S. Seventh St., St. Charles.

The 45-year-old Sycamore resident was charged Oct. 28 with having between 1,000 and 1,500 images and five to 10 videos of child pornography, some showing 12-yearold girls, according to DeKalb County court records.

His bond was set at $1 million, which a DeKalb County judge declined to reduce last month.

McCauley taught at Wredling Middle School and worked for District 303 for nearly 20 years, district officials have said.

He was placed on administrative leave without pay once district officials learned of the charges against him. Superintendent Don Schlomann had indicated the school board would begin the process for dismissing McCauley.

McCauley is next expected in court Jan. 9 for a status hearing.

SUGAR GROVE – Tina Hubbard had been looking forward to Holiday in the Grove since her family attended the annual one-day event last year.

Thanks to Mother Nature disrupting the Sugar Grove residents’ plans to spend the weekend out of town, Hubbard and her daughters – Savannah, 4, and Abby, 1½ – were able to participate in Saturday’s holiday activities, which included breakfast with Santa, a cake walk and children’s crafts.

Activities were held at four locations, including John Shields Elementary School and Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.

By late morning, the Hubbards had visited the Sugar Grove Public Library for face painting and visited with Santa Claus at the Sugar Grove Community House.

Seeing Santa was, Hubbard said, “Savannah’s first thing she wanted to do.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A pajama-clad St. Charles North student section stormed the court Saturday after its muses put an important early-season argument to bed.

North boasts the better boys basketball team in St. Charles right now, as a physical 68-58 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory against East prepared the North Stars for the mosh pit that was to come.

Efficient defense and rebounding powered host North (5-1, 2-0 UEC River) in a game that saw both teams struggle from the field.

“We worked all week on getting boards and box-outs in our zone,”

North senior forward Erik Miller said. “We take a lot of pride in that zone, you know. It works.”

Shooting woes also sprouted when the schools’ girls’ teams met to open the crosstown doubleheader, but East eventually came untracked for a 72-68 win.

On the boys side, the Saints (2-4, 0-2 UEC River) ultimately were relegated to hoisting deep 3s and fouling the North Stars – who converted 15 of 22 fourth-quarter free throws – down the stretch.

After the game, East coach Pat Woods stressed that patience would only benefit his team in the long-term, which includes a Jan. 18 rematch with North. With guard Cole Gentry (back) only recently returning to the lineup and post David Mason still mending

from a broken foot, the Saints aren’t working with their full complement of options.

“We’ll be all right when all’s said and done, you know,” Woods said.

“We’ve just got work to do.”

North swished six 3s, including three from Alec Goetz, who matched East’s Dom Adduci with 21 points.

Despite Adduci’s relative outburst, North players still felt they contained the explosive guard, who was limited to two points in the first half.

That’s because the zone often limited Adduci’s attempts, forcing other Saints to take aim. North coach Tom Poulin considered it a “victory” when someone other than Adduci attempted a field goal. Although the Saints’ AJ Washington (13 points) drilled a hand-

ful of long baseline jumpers early and Gentry (11) emerged late, the philosophy was sage enough.

East’s shooting struggles included an 8 of 24 mark from inside the arc.

“It’s St. Charles North basketball,” Goetz said. “Everyone chips in, everyone does what they [do], and we get wins right now. And that’s really the solution.”

Miller added 13 points on his 18th birthday, and also was pivotal in a collective rebounding effort alongside a handful of football teammates joining him on the hardwood.

“I don’t have a problem with it being physical this year,” Poulin said.

“We’ve got some horses.”

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead behind six points from Navigato, though the Purple Raiders would respond in the second quarter and make a run to take the lead before halftime. Bloomington went on a 17-7 run in the second quarter and was fueled

by Geneva turnovers against the Purple Raiders’ full-court press.

But there was too much Navigato down the stretch, and the Vikings pulled out a win after not playing up to Ralston’s standards for much of the game.

“We took a timeout and I told the kids we’ve abandoned everything we said we were going to do in this game,” Ralston said. “We said one of our keys was to get the ball inside on them, and Nate took over from there.”

North coach Sean Masoncup called the sequence the difference in the game, but his team still was in position to seize control late. East’s 12 second-half free-throws to North’s three ultimately proved the difference. A rebounding edge helped, too.

“I felt like we had control of the game a majority of the time and kept our fans cheering, which was huge,” Hilton said. “It picked us up, we were all supportive, and when it came down to the big plays, we made them. It was great.”

Guard Katie Claussner secured arguably the biggest rebound down the stretch, hustling to corral her miss after

splitting a pair of free throws.

Moments later, she found Kyra Washington for a lay-in that put East ahead, 67-62.

Separate Sam Novak 3s in the closing minute weren’t enough.

“The great thing about these kids is they never give up,” Masoncup said. “I’ve got great kids and I’m proud of them, and we’ve talking about getting close and getting over that hump of how to win a basketball game.”

Novak led all scorers with 20 points, while teammates Nicole Davidson (17) and Ashling Davern (11) followed.

East trumped that effort with five double-digit scorers: Hilton (18), Claussner (13), MacKenzie Meadows (13), Washington (12) and Hannah Vitkus (10).

CHAMPAIGN – One day after thrashing rival Batavia by 21 points, the Geneva boys basketball team looked flat against Bloomington.

Down by 13 points midway through the third quarter, Geneva junior Nate Navigato wouldn’t allow his team to lose.

Navigato put the team on his back in the second half and finished with a career-high 41 points in a 61-57 win against the Purple Raiders at the Country Financial Centennial Shootout at the University of Illinois on Saturday.

Navigato was an efficient 10 for 12 from the floor, but made an equal impact from the charity free-throw line hitting 19 of 23 attempts. Navigato scored 33 of his points after halftime.

“He played a whale of a game,” Geneva head coach Phil Ralston said. “He’s already got three offers and close

to 20 schools looking at him.

Anyone who saw him tonight knows why; he pretty much has the whole game.”

The Purple Raiders looked as though they might run away with the game, pushing their lead to 39-26 early in the third quarter. But Bloomington had no answer for Navigato, and he brought Geneva (6-1) back into the game.

“Coach always tells me that if you’re not shooting when you’re open, you’re being selfish by passing,” Navigato said.

“I take that to heart, and if I’m open, I have confidence that I can score.”

The junior earned a layup and the foul to bring the lead to 39-28 and an ensuing technical foul on Bloomington’s Jacob Romani gave the Vikings two additional free throws and the ball.

From that point on, Navigato went on a personal 15-2 run to put the Vikings ahead, 43-41.

Dear Abby: I was laid off from work, but my husband, “Keith,” works full time in a factory.

We live with his parents.

By the time Keith gets home from work and gets cleaned up, it’s time to eat dinner.

Immediately afterward, we always follow the same routine. We go in our bedroom and he goes on the computer to play video games, while I sit and watch TV and play on my phone.

We love each other and rarely disagree about things, but this isn’t fun for me. I have told Keith I feel ignored and I’d love to do something WITH him.

He says because our town is smallish, there’s not a lot to do that doesn’t cost money.

Keith is into the video games, so much so that when we first met, he’d sit in his bedroom and play for hours on end.

We’re planning a vacation in the next month or so, so it’s not like we do nothing at all.

But I don’t know how to improve our situation.

Using trump suits to make contracts

As regular readers know, I do a lot of bridge teaching. In the summer, I travel around the country running “bridge camps without tents.” They usually last three days, but I did one for only two days in Birmingham, Ala., in October. In the winter, I teach in Florida and my car gets almost as good a workout as I do.

The first lesson I taught this season in Florida, early last month, featured deals in which declarer had to handle the trump suit with care. This week, let’s look at six of them.

First, how should South try to make four spades after West takes the first three tricks with his high clubs, then shifts to a heart?

In the auction, South might rebid three notrump, which works well here as long as North takes a spade finesse. And, yes, South might initially respond two spades, a strong jump shift showing 13-16 high-card points and either an excellent one-suiter or a good two-suiter with length in both responder’s suit and opener’s suit.

South, who needs the rest of the tricks, must draw trumps without loss.

With eight cards missing only the queen, declarer should finesse, not play for the drop – “eight ever.” But should he finesse immediately, or only after first cashing the ace?

District Contract Manager (DCM) The DCM will manage the distribution within a geographic area for ACI Midwest, LLC responsible for negotiating contracts with Independent Contractors, managing delivery fees, and achieving service targets. This is a salaried position. Market salary provided commensurate with experience. Previous supervisory experience required. Previous newspaper distribution experience is a plus.
