Holiday in the Grove starts season of cheer in SG

bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Rachel Williams of Elburn watched Saturday as her son Logan, 2, danced to the music broadcast by 95.9-FM, known as The River, at John Shields Elementary School in Sugar Grove.

They had spent the day at the annual Holiday in the Grove event, and Logan was burning off the last of his energy before they were going home.

“We already saw Santa,” Williams said. “He wants a train set.”

Williams said Logan was too shy to sit on Santa’s lap at Jinglepalooza in Elburn on Friday night, but he had a successful seating and photo Saturday.

Holiday in the Grove offers an all-in-one event to start the holiday season, with cookies and candy at Santa’s Sweet Shoppe at the nearby United Methodist Church, and visits and breakfast with Santa at the Sugar Grove Community Building, as well as crafts, vendors, food and activities at the nearby school.

It’s an opportunity, some parents say, to do some fun things and participate in a little low-key Christmas shopping.

“I’m looking for some Christmas gifts,” said Joyce Metoyer of Montgomery, who was shopping with her son,

Aiden, 6, and daughter, Addison, 10. “I’m looking for ornaments and some crafts.”

“And something for Aiden,” Addison piped up. “And for moi. I like jewelry.”

Paulla Stroup of Sugar Grove, and her husband, Ken, also were shopping.

“We’re looking for ornaments and earrings for stocking stuffers,” Paulla Stroup said. “We bought some small Christmas gifts, some candy.”

As much as the shoppers enjoyed themselves, vendors did, as well. Kathy Parson of Sugar Grove sold crocheted and knitted items, as well as oil paintings. Her husband, Wayne, did the woodworking for bird houses and other items.

“It’s local, and it supports

the schools where all of our kids went and our grandkids go,” Kathy Parson said.

Ranjan Roy of Rajan’s Beauty Boutique brought the art of India to the event, painting henna designs on hands and forearms. Roy of Schaumburg said the henna, a natural dye, is temporary and lasts about a week. She paints the hands, feet, arms and legs of Indian brides as a tradition, but does the designs for others at festivals and events. The art and tradition of these temporary henna tattoos is thousands of years old, she said.

“I love doing it,” Roy said, as she finished intricate patterns on Sugar Grove resident Edith Prestidge’s daughters, Zofia, 8 and Aniela, 5.

Another vendor, Madilynn Hubble, 12, of Sugar Grove, sold scarves she made herself, using her forearms to knit the oversized stitches instead of knitting needles.

This is the seventh year Diana Baker, who sells handmade items at Busy Bee Crafts, has been president of the organizing committee.

“This is a community event that’s been going on since 1999,” Baker said, adding that various groups previously held similar types of Christmas events throughout the month of December – the park district, the American Legion, the school PTO. “We finally banded together and picked one weekend for everybody’s activity during one event.”

Baker said Holiday in the Grove has become an important tradition in the life of the community.

“It brings families out when they wouldn’t normally go out in the beginning of December,” Baker said. “And the proceeds of this event go back to help our The Between Friends Food Pantry. It helps Holiday Spirit, [a program], which buys gift cards and jackets and clothing and stuff for needy families. To me, it hits home, because I work at one of the schools, and I see the need for an event like this and the money that’s going to help these families.”

Election director: Objection filed in coroner race

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com An objection has been filed in the Kane County coroner race, said Suzanne Fahnestock, Kane County chief deputy clerk and director of elections.

Sixto Ojeda of Aurora has objected to the petition of candidate John Shoemaker of North Aurora in the Democratic primary for coroner, Fahnestock said.

Shoemaker will face Tao Martinez in the Democratic primary for Kane County coroner, according to the Kane County Elections website. Bob Tiballi is running against incumbent Rob Russell in the Republican primary for coroner.

Monday was the last day to file objections to candidates’ nomination petitions in the March 15 general primary.

“I’m not surprised,”

Shoemaker said of the object by telephone Monday evening, declining further comment.

Ojeda on Monday evening could not immediately be reached for comment.

Hearings for the objections will be held on Dec. 14, and the specific times for the hearings will be announced today, Fahnestock said.

There were no objec tions filed for state senate,

state representative or congressional candidates that represent residents in the Tri-Cities area, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections website.

There were nine other objections to Democratic candidates – one each for county board candidates Angela Clay Thomas and Barabara Hernandez, as well as seven Aurora precinct committeeman candidates, Fahnestock said.

Customers’ generosity leads to makeover for car wash

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When El Diamante Hand Car Wash closed for the last weekend in November, it had an outdated, worn-out look.

But, thanks to the generosity of loyal customers, the downtown St. Charles car wash reopened Dec. 1 with a host of cosmetic changes, including fresh paint, new flooring and new furniture.

Manager Naye Gomez said the owner, Alejandra Sanchez, describes the Gonzalez-Mendez family as “our angels here on earth.” They presented the car wash with a rare proposition, she said.

room, exterior, carpeting and flooring, Gomez said.

Various people contributed with the labor, she said.

“It was pretty packed,” Gomez said, adding it was fun to see the gradual changes.

The car wash, which is usually closed Mondays, reopened on a Tuesday. Gomez said its new look didn’t go unnoticed among customers, who were supportive of the change.

El Diamante will celebrate its seventh anniversary in April, Gomez said. She noted the Gonzalez-Mendez family has patronized the car wash for about four years.

The Gonzalez-Mendez family did not return calls seeking comment.

Comcast opens Xfinity retail store in Batavia to sample products and more

The Xfinity store is at 57 and 59 S. Randall Road in The Shoppes at Windmill Place Shopping Center in Batavia, according to a news release.

The 5,000-square-foot store is designed to give visitors real life, hands-on demonstrations of Xfinity’s range of products and services, the release states. This will include cable TV, high-speed Internet, home phone services, and its home security and home automation platform, according to the release.

Along with product and service demos, customers can pay bills, pick up and return equipment and get assistance from trained sales consultants, the release states. The store has various seating areas so customers can sample the products as though they were in their own homes, according to the release. The store phone number is 1-800-266-2278. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Satur-

day and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“The Xfinity store gives us the opportunity to provide visitors first-hand demonstrations of our innovations in TV viewing, communications and accessing content at home and on the go, as well as the latest in home security and automation,” John Crowley, Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region senior vice president, said in the release.

The Xfinity Store will have 15 full- and part-time employees, the release states.

The store also features iPads and other mobile devices visitors can use to explore Xfinity’s Android and iOS apps. The apps range from Xfinity TV Go, which allows customers to watch live TV, stream On Demand content and download movies and TV shows, to Xfinity Home, which provides home monitoring and management remotely, the release states.

A NEW ROUTE

Anderson Road extension provides drivers with new way to cross tracks in Elburn

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A large red, white and blue ribbon was stretched across Anderson Road in Elburn on Monday morning, held by officials who also carried pairs of scissors.

The scene was the grand finale to a ceremony that marked the opening of the Anderson Road extension, which includes a bridge to cross over the Union Pacific tracks on the south side of town.

Elburn officials were joined by those from Kane County, Kaneland School District 302 and the federal government at the ceremony, which was at the intersection of Anderson Road and Prairie Valley Street, just east of Kaneland John Stewart Elementary School. Fifth-graders from the school sang the national anthem at the beginning of the ceremony.

By 10:35 a.m., after speeches from Elburn Village President Dave Anderson, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, Kane County Board member Drew Frasz and U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, the extension was open.

Noting the children who performed at the ceremony, Lauzen pointed out “by the time these children are our ages, they will already have had a half-century of using this bridge.”

Featuring a 45 mph speed limit, the extension allows traffic south through Keslinger Road, with access to the Metra station in Elburn.

There also is a new intersection, as drivers can travel west on Hicks Drive, then turn south on either Paul Street or Dempsey Street to reach North Street.

The bridge crossing allows drivers to travel from Route 38 to Keslinger Road without having to wait for a train. In the past, officials have pointed to a study that showed 105 trains a day passed through the village. Officials also have

On Monday, foggy conditions prevented those in attendance from seeing the bridge from the site of the ceremony, which was noted in speeches

by Anderson and Frasz, with Anderson concluding his speech with, “Trust me, as Drew said, it’s there.” At the ceremony’s conclusion, officials took a drive across the bridge.

During their speeches, Anderson and Frasz talked about the 20 years of effort needed to make the project a reality.

Previously, officials stated the project included more than $21 million in state, federal and local funds. On Monday, Anderson noted the work

done by former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert for “bringing money back here.”

Frasz talked about how the extension’s opening is key to another project – Shodeen Inc.’s Elburn Station development. Dave Patzelt, presi-

dent of Shodeen Inc., was at the event. Patzelt noted Shodeen “couldn’t build homes until the road was opened … and the road has opened.” He said by spring, some sewer work could be done for the first phase of Elburn Station,

which will be south of the Metra tracks and east of Anderson Road.

The Anderson Road project’s groundbreaking event took place in November 2013.

Frasz praised the construction of the project, as it was completed ahead of schedule.

He said it was “a very tough job” because of a wet spring.

He also thanked members of the Elburn Village Board for “careful consideration of this project,” saying he included the Elburn Station project in that.

Hultgren took note that there was a diverse crowd at the event, including local, state, federal and school district officials, and said it was a great day to celebrate.

“This is an exciting day,” Hultgren said.

What The Salvation Army typically does with gold coins deposited in kettles is to put them all together and take them to auction, which nets more money, Clark said.

“We had a similar coin a few years ago that was worth $1,300,” Clark said. “We are hoping to get at least that amount. We are very excited to have received that. It’s pretty incredible.”

Mystery donors often drop gold or rare coins among the cash and change others put in during The Salvation Army’s red kettle fund drive.

Clark praised Geneva’s Christmas Walk donor.

“We have these mystery donors, who are just waiting for the right opportunity to show their generosity,” Clark said.

“It’s always a blessing. It’s exciting to find those coins in the kettles, and more exciting to know we will be able to help more people in our community.”

Volunteer bell ringers still are needed to fill more than 4,000 spots for the red kettle drive as it continues the next two weeks, Clark said.

By BRENDA SCHORY GENEVA – An anonymous donor dropped a gold coin in a Salvation Army kettle during Friday night’s Geneva Christmas Walk event, officials said.

The one-ounce double eagle gold coin is the first of the season reported in the Metropolitan Chicago area, said Lt. Betsy Clark, commanding officer of the St. Charles Tri-City Corps.

On Saturday, three more gold coins were reported in red kettles in McHenry County, The Salvation Army officials reported.

Volunteers from the Geneva Kiwanis Club were ringing the bell for the red kettle at the State Street Jewelers in Geneva, which is where the first coin was found, Clark said.

“Our community is so generous,” Clark stated via The Salvation Army’s Facebook page.

He launched the first Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) for Kids. It was so successful that now organizations around the country are starting their own CBC for Kids programs, following Rusert’s model.

Daniel P. O’Gara, age 78, of Batavia, Illinois, passed away in his home on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, after a brave battle with cancer.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1937, in Chicago to Viateur and Mary Ellen (Collins) O’Gara.

Dan attended Leo High School and was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He taught Language Arts in the St. Charles School District for over 30 years, first at Haines Junior High, and then Wredling Middle School, retiring in 2000. Dan loved reading, traveling to Europe with his wife, annual golf trips to Ireland with his brother, Larry, watching Notre Dame football and spending time with his family. Following retirement, he enjoyed a weekday routine of attending Mass and breakfast with a special group of guys and working out at Delnor Wellness Center. Dan recently celebrated 50 years of marriage with his wife Linda (Anderson), whom he wed on August

He loved bowling and was coached by his dad for many years. He also enjoyed skateboarding and playing with his cousins. Jake was known as a loving person, very kind,always respectful to friends and relatives and he would help anybody in any way that he could.

He never met a stranger and was genuinely interested in learning about you and how things were going in your life. Jake was such a kind, gentle person. Jake loved working Saturday’s on Grandpa’s farm since he was 10 years old, mowing, building a pond and waterfall, and setting up decorations for the annual Halloween party. He is remembered as one of the hardest working people no matter what.

Jake is survived by his loving parents, Lance Webb and Karen (Keck) Webb of Sycamore; his sister, Kayla Webb; his maternal grandparents, John and Kathy (Sandeno) Keck of DeKalb; his paternal grandparents, Jim Sr., and Sandee (Hartle) Webb of St. Charles and Bernice Ott of St. Charles; as well as many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

ST. CHARLES – There still is time to contribute to the Jim Wheeler Toys for Kids program.

Now in its 32nd year, the program collects toys for needy boys and girls in the Tri-Cities area. It is named after a longtime advisory board member of The Salvation Army Joe K. Anderson Community Center who made it his mission to ensure no child in the Tri-Cities went without presents on Christmas morning, according to a news release.

New, unwrapped toys will be accepted at various locations in St. Charles and Geneva through Sunday, the release stated.

The wish list includes remote-control toys, family games, jewelry making kits, Bratz dolls, Disney princesses, kitchen sets, My Little Pony, purses, Marvel heroes, jewelry, books, arts and crafts items, movies, wallets, Hot Wheels, Lincoln Logs, Lego sets, Barbies, Monster High, Playskool toys, Hello Kitty and Thomas the Train, according to the release.

Monetary donations also are accepted and will be used to buy toys, the release stated. It indicates cash or check contributions should be made out to The Salvation

Army with specific identification that funds are for Toys for Kids.

St. Charles keeps levy flat for 7th consecutive year

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday continued its recent trend of keeping its tax levy flat.

Aldermen unanimously approved a $20,102,280 tax levy that – once the debt service is abated – will be reduced to just the operating levy, or $12,055,117.

That amount has remained unchanged since 2009, Finance Director Chris Minick said.

As a result, he said, the city has generated savings on the city portion of the tax bill over time. A property valued at $300,000 has experienced a cumulative savings of $339, he said.

Additionally, Minick said, the city is anticipating an increase – about 3 percent – to the equalized assessed value for the first time in several years.

This, combined with the

flat levy, would mean the city portion of a resident’s tax bill would remain the same as in 2014 if his or her property value increased by that same 3 percent citywide average, he said.

In 2014, Minick said, the city accounted for about 9.64 percent of the tax bill while St. Charles School District 303 accounted for the majority of it – about 63 percent.

In other news, Guy Gresser of the St. Charles Fire Department was sworn in as fire lieutenant during the meeting. He has been with the department since January 1997, when he began as a paid on-call employee. He became full-time in January 1998.

Aldermen also granted The Finery and Blacksmith Bar, 305 W. Main St., St. Charles, a permit for a 1 a.m. closing Jan. 1 for the New Year’s Eve celebration. Liquor license holders are allowed four such permits per fiscal year.

SOUTH ELGIN – Hats, mittens, scarves and gloves are being collected by South Elgin Community United Methodist Church to distribute to children who might need them.

The items are displayed on a Giving Tree immediately inside of the parking lot entrance to the church at 400 W. Spring St. (one block west of Route 31) in South Elgin.

To drop off donations, hang them on the tree in the foyer by Dec. 21.

BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council on Monday approved the city’s 2015 tax levy, 2016 budget and some revenue increases.

The council voted, 13-0, in favor on the levy, budget and revenue increases at its regular meeting. Third Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann was absent.

The city’s tax levy totals about $6.2 million, including pension funds. The levy rate is expected to decrease to about $0.68, down from the 2014 rate of $0.71, according to a city memo.

The city’s 2016 budget has about $105 million in expenditures. To help generate revenue, the council approved a gasoline tax increase from one cent

to two cents that will raise an estimated $190,000 in revenue.

Council members also approved a leaf and brush pickup cost increase from $3 to $4, which is expected to raise $90,000.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said the actual cost for the pickup program is $6 a bag and is being operated at a loss to the city.

The city hopes to make about $300,000 from the introduction of a liquor tax. Fourth Ward Alderman Susan Stark voted against recommending the tax Wednesday so the item could be up for discussion Monday.

Stark urged residents to patronize Batavia businesses that sell alcohol to lessen the burden of the added tax on the business owners.

Where does your paycheck come from in retirement?

Have you asked yourself where your paycheck will come from in retirement, and – once taxes are considered – will it be enough to live the way you want? For most of us, starting and ending our career with the same company is a thing of the past, as are pension checks funding the majority of our retirement. For better or worse, most of us now bear the responsibility for our own retirement planning and determining how our savings will be invested. Possibly more challenging, we are responsible for unwinding our nest egg in a tax-efficient manner, with hopes of never running out of money.

Income in retirement may come from numerous sources, with the most common being Social Security, withdrawals from a company retirement plan, personal savings and/or investment accounts.

Retirement planning is not an easy task and can be confusing. When it comes to retirement account names and tax law, we have an alphabet soup made up of seemingly random numbers and letters, each meaning something slightly different. Taxation on the source of your paycheck can vary greatly, as can the rules, so it’s especially important to have a basic understanding of taxes, so no surprises occur in retirement.

Social Security will be a source of income for most retirees. For those not subject to the recent changes in who can file for Social Security, and when, there may be “claiming strategies” worth considering. For the rest of us, there’s much more uncertainty as to what we will receive and when we will receive it. Either way, social security will continue to be an important part of the retirement income puzzle for many retirees.

In addition to Social Security, many retirees withdraw from an investment portfolio on an as-needed basis or on a specified schedule to provide adequate income in retirement. Retirees who have been thoughtful in planning ahead may

Estimating how much can be annually withdrawn from your portfolio is difficult. You should carefully consider your portfolio’s investment “mix,” total investment costs and how long withdrawals may be needed. You should have a good understanding of your risk, make sure that this aligns with your goals and annually review this. Being too conservative may lead to a lower probability that withdrawals are able to be increased with inflation, or worse, your paychecks are no longer able to be replaced.

Your retirement income plan should be tailored to your financial and nonfinancial goals, and should also include careful investment, estate and tax planning. Stop and ask yourself: What is my ideal future?

When do I want to retire; what do I want to accomplish; and how do I want to be remembered? Are there values that I would like to pass on to my children or grandchildren?

Whatever your answers may be, knowing where your paycheck comes from in retirement helps in determining whether your ideal future is achievable.

Congress gets a positive year-end review

By JONATHAN BERNSTEIN Bloomberg View I jab at the majority Republicans in Congress when they don’t do their job, so I should give them credit when they do.

A five-year highway bill has been sent to the president. That’s something Republican Congresses since the 1990s (and the Democratic ones in 2007-10) have found difficult to do. Bloomberg View columnist Barry Ritholtz makes a reasonable argument against the way the bill is funded, but I agree with Kevin Drum of Mother Jones on this one: Muddling through is good enough.

Up next is an education bill. Legislators have had revising or replacing No Child Left Behind on their to-do list for years. This Congress is getting it done, with just a final Senate vote remaining.

In both cases, Republicans in the House and

Senate demonstrated the ability to compromise and cut deals to get much of what they wanted, even if it wasn’t everything they hoped for.

There was also the agreement reached earlier on raising the debt limit and funding the government for the next two years. Now all they have to do is pass full-year appropriations to keep the government running before a shutdown deadline on Dec. 13.

If only the rest of this Congress’ record was as solid.

The continued backlog in the Senate on dealing with Barack Obama’s judicial and executive-branch nominations continues to be a disgrace and a significant failure of competent government.

Another problem is the lack of tough and constructive oversight of government. Instead, we have plenty of partisan “investigations,”

Nor has Congress done its job on foreign affairs. It has still failed to pass any authorization for the war on Islamic State (or, alternatively, to forbid that war).

And this list includes only the tasks already on the legislators’ agenda, whether they wanted them there or not.

When it comes to taking on new challenges, the record is dismal.

Still, something is better than nothing. So, good for Republicans for ending this congressional session on something of a positive note. Let’s hope they resolve to improve their record next year.

Batavia’s McGee returns from injury as one of five senior captains

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – It would seem out of the ordinary looking and seeing the Batavia girls gymnastics team with five team captains, although maybe a little less so seeing all five being seniors.

But Batavia coach Taryn Boyce had a fairly simple explanation to having that number of girls lead the group.

“They are all deserving leaders,” Boyce said. “When talking with my assistant, I don’t think of the best gymnast or anything like that to be the captain. All of these girls have experience, have good leadership abilities and are all deserving to lead this group.”

While some decisions need to be made, having five girls all be on the same page is something that they have found doesn’t come easily, but have always worked hard to find a common ground.

But there are certainly positives for the likes of seven newcomers to the varsity this year, having the option to go to more than one or two captains.

“I think it definitely helps the younger girls,” senior Amanda Dian said. “You don’t just have the captain you have to go to. We have formed great relationships with all of the younger girls and that really helps once things get started.”

Dian joins Megan McGee, McKenna Sloan, Karen Li and Lauren Stangl as the five captains for the Bulldogs this year.

With five captains and usually five practices during the week, Boyce said each one takes a practice leading the warmups, helping to build the camaraderie not only among the seniors, but the entire team top to bottom.

The senior has gone through extensive physical therapy to get back out into competition, saying that she wasn’t really sure if she would get the opportunity to do so after the injury.

“It’s kind of hard to explain, but I’ve never broken a bone before so I didn’t know what was happening,” said McGee, who has a metal rod in her right thigh that she said acts like a brace. “I’m grateful to be back out here and I’m at the point now where I have my confidence back and I’m not worried about getting hurt

again.”

Boyce joked that during Batavia’s season-opening meet, which also turned out to be its senior night, she was more nervous with McGee’s landing than McGee was.

When Boyce told McGee that it was no problem if she didn’t land her dismount right away if she was nervous about

it, her response was, “that’s funny.”

While going back to a sport that she suffered a pretty severe injury in was a risk, the thought of giving up the sport she loved wasn’t something that McGee could come to terms with.

Strong in spurts, not so strong in others. That can be basketball for you, especially in a game of runs, but it’s not the kind of play that will define St. Charles North, coach Sean Masoncup vows.

After an unbeaten start during Thanksgiving tournament play in downstate Pontiac last month, the North Stars have suffered successive losses, to Batavia and Hersey.

North controlled the first half of the Batavia game before fading. Against Hersey, the team steadied after navigating an ominous start.

“We’ll move on and we’ll get ready,” Masoncup said. “It’s a long, long, long season. But I can see how we can be very good if we want to be and we decide to be.”

Masoncup is harping on persistence and aggressiveness under the boards during the opening weeks of the season.

He felt that would have been especially useful against Batavia, which won, 55-49, in Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division opener.

“I think a lot of it was we got the look that we wanted them to take, and then we didn’t finish the play,” Masoncup said. “They got several offensive rebounds that were key.

Maybe not a lot of them, but they were key to where they got a bucket.”

“Especially as seniors, we all want to get the most out of our senior years,” Sloan said. “I think if we work hard and continue to improve as the season goes on, we’ll be happy with the results and where we are at the end. As long as we do those things, we can live with how it ends up.”

The biggest thing that St. Charles co-op gymnastics coach Amy Lill sees with her group this season is potential.

While every meet means something with a limited number before things swing into that serious gear of regionals, sectionals and, of course, the state meet, Lill would like to see her team continue to build and have strong, consistent meets.

“I just want to see the girls do well,” Lill said. “My early thoughts are that there is a lot of potential with this group. It’s hard to gauge with just one meet, but I think it’s gone well so far.”

Lill said Dani Buoy (St. Charles North), Devon Ross (St. Charles East), Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci (North) and Grace Levita (North) are returners expected to be leaders this season.

Geneva Vikings

While last year seemed disappointing to some after a second place finish at state, Geneva gymnastics coach Kim Hostman thinks it was a motivator for the all but two returning gymnasts.

Despite not having her sister, Grace, there this year, Claire Ginsberg seems poised, now as a junior, to take over the lead of the Vikings after a successful season that included a trip to state last year.

“We have a really strong group this year,” Hostman said. “We lost a few girls, but I think the most important thing is to build off of what we did last year and continue that strong work ethic. As long as we stay focused and consistent in our practices and meets, it will be a very strong year for us.”

With no seniors on this year’s group, Hostman also expects big things from juniors Holly Friedel (all-around) and Kelly Frank (bars, beam and floor).

Also playing an important role in Geneva returning and making an impact at state this year will be juniors Julia Grootens and Paige Beitzel, as well as sophomore Molly Lambillotte and freshman Grace De Vita.

While there are a number of young girls expected to contribute, Hostman believes that the experience of a state trip really helped a number of girls who show inexperience, age-wise.

“I think taking second made them want it even more this year,” Hostman said. “They got a taste of what it takes to be at that high of a level and getting second made them anxious to get back out there.”

Russel Wright (1904-1976) worked as an industrial designer, a job created in the 20th century. In the 1920s, he worked in the theater making sets and props. After 1929, he formed a company with his wife Mary, who was also a designer, designing furniture, radios and useful household accessories made of spun aluminum, stainless steel, paper, wood, glass, plastic and ceramics. Wright’s most famous products are the modern dinnerwares created, beginning in 1938, for many china companies including Harker, Iroquois, Steubenville and Justin Tharaud. The “American Modern” pattern, introduced in 1939 by Steubenville Pottery, became America’s best-selling set for over 20 years.

Copies are made by Bauer Pottery today. Most collectors know about the dinnerware patterns, but few have discovered his now-more-expensive metal or wooden pieces. A spun aluminum bowl sells for over $10,000, a wooden “Oceana” bowl for about $2,000 and nickel-plated bookends shaped like horses, $2,700. A: The song “Connecticut” was written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, and the sheet music was published in 1946. Judy Garland (1922-1969) was born Frances Ethel Gumm. Her parents were vaudeville performers. Judy started singing as “Baby Gumm” when she was about two years old. She signed a contract with movie studio MGM in 1935.

Most old sheet music sells online for about $5 to $10, unless it has some special appeal. After knocking 41 seconds off, the Mustangs turned the ball over to Batavia on an offensive foul.

With 33 seconds left to play, Rolling Meadows fouled Beth-

any Orman in an effort to regain the ball. The senior guard converted both free throws in a one and one situation, giving Batavia a three-point margin.

“I just needed to stay calm and take a deep breath,” Orman said. “I had to put them in. It was my time to do it.”

The Mustangs fired two 3-point attempts in the waning seconds, but both missed their mark.

In addition to the win, Batavia coach Kevin Jensen was pleased his team played well without its leading scorer, the St. Louis-bound Frazier.

“There were a lot of goofy things that didn’t go our way, but we battled through it and nothing ever got away from us,” Jensen said. “The fact that we don’t have to go really small if Hannah gets in foul trouble. That helped out a lot.

We had all kinds of people step up. We are a little deeper this year and we have more people willing to shoot.”

The Mustangs led, 12-10, after a sluggish first quarter that featured a combined 15 turnovers and no baskets in the first two minutes.

The score was tied at 25, at the half.

Rolling Meadows led, 2825, when Frazier went to the bench. Freshman Geddy Rerko (seven points) replaced Frazier in the middle and kept

the Bulldogs (6-1) in the game.

Rerko’s back to back baskets and free throw tied the score at 34 late in the third quarter.

“We got their post in foul trouble and we had some chance to extend it and that didn’t happen,” Rolling Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorksy said.

At the 5:28 mark of the fourth quarter, with Batavia trailing, 41-34, an Orman 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 run that put Batavia back in the game. Frazier and Jessica Koch (eight points) followed with layups. Koch’s bucket put the Bulldogs ahead, 45-41.

Rolling Meadows tied the score at 45 on a 3-pointer and free throw by Kyra Spiwak.

The junior guard led all scorers with 19 points.

Hannah Mickey tallied 12 points for the Mustangs.

Spiwak and Frazier were named the game’s most valuable players.

Evan is a senior guard on the St Charles East basketball team. Evan led the Saints to a 3-1 record at the the STCE Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Bennett averaged 20 points a game and was named all-tournament in the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving tournament helping the Vikings to a tournament championship and a 4-0 start to the season.

As a captain of the girls swim team, Myanna qualified for the IHSA State Meet for the third year in a row. This year she made the All-State Team, placed 10th in the 200 Freestyle, and 6th in the 100 Butterfly. She also took down her old record in the 100 Butterfly this year.

Myanna is an outstanding student and building leader and has a great work ethic.

Dylan, a Junior on the boys bowling team, continues to be a leader. He recently finished 10th individually, averaging 222 for 6 games, in the 48 team Plainfield North Tournament on November 21st.

Ryan Fitzgerald helped the Rockets capture the Leland G. Strombom Thanksgiving tournament at Sycamore.

Central went 4-0 to win the Championship, beating Sandwich, Dundee Crown, Sycamore, and Rockford Jefferson. Ryan Fitzgerald averaged 15 p.p.g and 8 r.p.g. In the championship game, Ryan had a double double which was his second of the tournament.

He also earned all tournament team honors.

Morgan Rosencrants helped St. Charles North get off to a stellar 3-0 start at the Pontiac Thanksgiving Tournament, averaging 15 points a game, 15 rebounds, and 15 steals.

Her consistent good play and hard work were the key to victories against LaSalle-Peru and Pontiac as she scored 20 and 19 points respectively. Morgan’s leadership has played just as big a part as her skills on the court, and is why she is the Stars Player of the Month.

Ryan, an all-tournament selection at Batavia’s annual Ken Peddy Windmill Classic Thanksgiving tournament, looks to lead the Knights with his poise, easing the team into the coach Joe Conroy era. Paced Friday’s home rout of Morris with 18 points.

PALATINE – The 15 college coaches watching the Batavia and Rolling Meadows girls basketball teams play in the opening round of the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase at Fremd High School Saturday morning weren’t the only ones critiquing the action on the court.

Fans were vocalizing their opinions of the officiating.

Batavia denizens expressed loudly their disapproval when Hannah Frazier was whistled for her fourth foul two minutes into the second half and went to the bench.

But it was two fouls called against Rolling Meadows in the last minute of play that preserved the Bulldogs’ 48-45 victory.

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com PALATINE – A stifling zone defense and crisp early 3-point shooting led the undefeated Hersey girls basketball team to an easy 39-21 victory over St. Charles North on Saturday night in the second annual Chicagoland Invitational Showcase at Fremd.

Four 3-point field goals, three by Gina Miklasz, had Hersey out to a 17-1 lead after one quarter and the Huskies never looked back. The North Stars did pick up their own defensive effort to start the second half, holding Hersey to just four third-quarter points, and at one point in the third quarter cut the Hersey lead to nine.

“That’s a top-five team in the state,” North Stars coach Sean Masoncup said.

Steel extend point streak, fall in shootout

SIOUX FALLS, SD – For the 14th time in 23 games, the Chicago Steel opened up the scoring, however, it was not enough against the Sioux Falls Stampede in United States Hockey League action Saturday afternoon.

The Steel fell, 4-3, in a five-round shootout, as Sioux Falls’ Collin Peters was the only one to tally a goal, propelling the Stampede to victory at Denny Stanford PREMIER Center.

Chicago now has earned at least one point in 12 straight games.

Christiano Versich, Lucas Michaud and Grant Gabriele scored goals for the Steel (9-10-2-2, 22 points) in the loss.

Gabriele’s goal with 8:32 remaining tied the score at 3, eventually forcing overtime.

Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar (28 saves) stopped the first four Stampede shooters, but Peters’ attempt found the net to win the game.

Vladar and the Steel will put the point streak to the test at 7 p.m., Thursday hosting the Youngstown Phantoms at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

BATAVIA – Batavia senior defensive end Derek Nutley has been selected as one of two National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award recipients in the Chicago area.

The award recognizes high school students for their outstanding individual academic achievements, athletic accomplishments – which included a school-record 16.5 sacks this season – and community involvement.

Nutley makes it four years in a row in which a Batavia football athlete has received this award.

Nutley’s academic qualifications include a current 4.311 GPA – ranking him 42nd out of 478 students – a 32 ACT score and membership in the National Honor Society.

“Last year, as a junior, Derek did not start on the varsity football team. This year, he was named All-Conference, Upstate Eight MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, and set the school record for sacks, which ranks third in the state of Illinois,” Batavia football coach Dennis Piron said. “He nev-

Cognitive behavioral therapy examines and helps correct self-critical thought patterns that contribute to the “grumpiness.” Psychotherapy can help sort out conflicts in important relationships that also might be involved.

An antidepressant medication can be very helpful. The most commonly prescribed are the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (such as fluoxetine); serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (such as venlafaxine), mirtazapine and bupropion.

Your doctor may add a different type of drug to your treatment – for example, a mood stabilizer or anti-anxiety medication.

With treatment, symptoms often go away completely. However, continued treatment usually is necessary to prevent symptoms from returning.

My patient who insisted he was just “a grumpy person” agreed to try an antidepressant. Two months later, he and his wife came to my office.

The patient told me he wasn’t sure if the medicine was helping. He said he’d stay on it if I thought he should. Before I could answer, his wife said, “You really should. You’re not grumpy anymore.” He shrugged, looked at me and said: “She probably knows me better than I know me.”

Clearly, the two of them had a strong relationship.

It grew stronger when he continued with the treatment.

Dr. Wallace: I’ve got an unusual weight problem. I’m very slim. I’m 5 feet 3 inches tall and weigh a whopping 96 pounds.

I’ve always been slim, even though I eat like a normal teen (tons of junk food). I’ve tried to gain weight, but I don’t. I’ve been told I have a “slim” body type and I’ll be slim all my life.

Because I’m slim I’m also a bit underdeveloped physically. I’m told I’m cute and have a “cute little figure,” and I agree.

But some of the guys at my school seem to enjoy poking fun at people, and I happen to be one of their targets. The name they mostly use for me is “String Bean.”

I know I should be happy I’m slim and can pig out on french fries and other fattening foods without gaining weight, but I am a tad self-conscious about my build.

I realize Mother Nature has decided I will be slim, and I can accept that. It’s the name-calling that really bothers me.

says I suffer from “dysthymia.” A friend says this is just a nice word for depression. What is dysthymia?

Dear Reader: Dysthymia is a type of depression.

Periods of dysthymia tend to last longer than periods of depression. In fact, many people with dysthymia describe having been depressed as long as they can remember. Dysthymia typically is less severe than major depression; however, people with dysthymia are more likely to develop major depression in the future.

Dysthymia is not quite as common as full-blown depression. During the course of a year, about two people out of every 100 will suffer from dysthymia. It is about twice as common in women as in men.

The symptoms of dysthymia are like those of major depression. In both conditions, a person can: • Have a low or irritable mood (grouchy).

• Feel relatively unmotivated or apathetic.

• Feel disengaged from the world.

• Feel pleasure less often, from anything that normally gives pleasure, from eating to sex.

• Have little energy.

• Experience an increase or decrease in appetite and weight.

• Sleep too much or have trouble sleeping.

• Have difficulty concentrating.

• Feel indecisive.

• Feel pessimistic.

• Have a poor self-image.

Dysthymia lasts for long periods, sometimes starting in childhood. As a result, people with dysthymia tend to believe their symptoms are just a natural part of their personality. They might not even think to talk about it with doctors, family or friends.

It is aimed at serious tournament players, with in-depth articles about major events, a monthly bidding contest that readers may enter, hands to bid with your partner, book and software reviews, and instructive quizzes.

There are two levels of quiz, for good players and for those aspiring to that level. This deal is easier on paper. South is in five spades. West leads the diamond two. South takes the trick in the dummy, plays a club to his king, leads a second club to the jack and ace, then continues with the club 10. What should East discard?

Note that six hearts doubled would cost only 300, cheap if five spades is making, but not good if it can be defeated.

East should realize not only that his partner has led a singleton, but that South knows it, too. So, with a solid suit in the dummy, why isn’t declarer drawing trumps?

West must have the spade ace, and South anticipates: spade to the ace, heart to a high honor, diamond ruff. He is hoping to cut the communication between the defenders by discarding his heart on the club 10.

And that will work if East carelessly signals with his heart queen at trick four.

Instead, East must “discard” his trump. Then declarer has no reply.

Finally, note that East should play his diamond 10 at trick one as a suit-preference signal to confirm that he has the heart ace. Attitude and count are clearly irrelevant.
