Santa, treats and holiday fun in Kaneville

He took a candy cane, waited a second, then moved closer.

Eventually, both 2-yearold Paxton and his big sister, Kierston, 5, were comfortable enough to tell St. Nick what they wanted for Christmas.

And since they were the only ones in line at the time to see Santa late Saturday morning at the Kaneville Fire Department, the pressure was off.

That is among the features the kids’ parents, Cortland residents Mark and Heide Greiff, talked of enjoying at the annual Christmas in Kaneville festival.

Heide Greiff grew up in Kaneville, and the Greiffs said they come to the event every year. Mark Greiff said the kids have fun. Pointing to Paxton, he said his son “is definitely shy.” Then he noted that Paxton soon was telling Santa he wanted a toy combine and trains.

“They warmed up pretty quickly to him,” Mark Greiff said. “It is very personable, something for the whole family.”

Heide Greiff said such an event is especially fun when “you personally know Santa.”

Santa at the fire station was one of the attractions at the festival, which featured multiple events at Kaneville’s community center, where the library, Old Second Bank and a gym are housed. The venues hosted activities, with free holiday cookies, candy and drinks at every stop.

Hill’s Country Store also hosted a customer apprecia-

tion event, featuring a spread of fresh baked treats.

There was a cookie walk at Kaneville United Methodist Church, and there was a hayride that took participants to each venue.

At the Kaneville Public Library, Ray Christiansen, the library’s director, smiled as he called the day “crazy busy.” As he spoke, Elyse Napoli’s music students prepared for a recital, and crowds were forming nearby. Kids

were busy making crafts in one room. Treats were handed out in another area.

“It’s a good thing,” Christiansen said. “For as small as a library as we are, to have a couple of hundred people come through is really exciting.”

Christiansen said the event has been going on for a few years. He said there previously had been several Christmas celebrations around town, but an effort was made to bring

everyone together for one event.

“We’re not like the Christmas Walk in Geneva or anything like that,” he said, but he added that it is an opportunity for Kaneville’s residents to get together with friends and celebrate as a community.

At the community center, Karen Flamand sat at a table that featured items promoting the Kaneville Township Historical Society. Baked goods also were sold at the table.

Flamand said the crowds had been pretty good throughout the day, with people checking in between other activities.

Whatever did not get sold, she said, would head to Hill’s Country Store, where owner Pat Hill “will sell it for us.”

She said Hill, who is also Kaneville’s village president, had made an appearance at the festival. Hill is battling breast cancer, and signs supporting her are visible throughout the town and at her store.

A sold-out event in Hill’s honor took place later Saturday at Fishermen’s Inn. Outside of the fire department, volunteer firefighter Brett Gobeli talked about how the community is coming together for Hill and how “we all look out for one another.”

A seven-year resident of the town, Gobeli said he enjoys living in Kaneville.

“I loved it as soon as I walked in,” Gobeli said.

Families enjoy Evergreen Holidays event in North Aurora

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Several families spent their Sunday afternoon having fun outdoors during the fourth annual Evergreen Holidays event at North Aurora Riverfront Park in North Aurora.

When residents weren’t looking at the collection of 30 lit and decorated Christmas trees in the park, they were enjoying hot cocoa, popcorn and a few kid-friendly activities.

“We like to consider this a whole community event … we like to tie everyone in,” said

Jennifer Duncan, chairman of the North Aurora River District Alliance, which hosts the event.

Evergreen Holidays was started because the alliance wanted a way to highlight the North Aurora portion of the Fox River, Duncan said. The organization teamed up with the North Aurora Mothers Club, the Lions Club and the Crossway Chapel in North Aurora to put together the event.

The alliance invites local businesses and organizations to become part of the event by sponsoring one of the Christmas trees. Alliance members

spent three hours on Friday stringing lights on all the trees, then each sponsor had until Sunday afternoon to decorate their trees, Duncan said.

The alliance encouraged ornaments that were edible for animals since the trees are located near the river. The environmental club at Fearn Elementary School made pine cones and toilet paper roll ornaments decorated with bird seed, said David Simpson, one of the club’s members and a fifth-grader at the school.

Simpson and about 60 other students created their ornaments at Red Oak Nature Cen-

ter, then they walked on the Fox River Trail to Riverfront Park with Dr. Ann Butcher, the club’s coordinator and a Fearn fifth-grade teacher.

“I like the games and activities we get to do … and the trees, of course,” Simpson, 10, said.

The students decorated two Christmas trees sponsored by the North Aurora Fire Department, as well as a Fearn-PTO sponsored tree. North Aurora resident Kathy Evans said she was impressed by the use of red and green tulle for ornaments in one of the trees.

Holidays with her three daughters, Sophie, 12, Rebecca, 10, and Elise, 8. The girls said they enjoyed all the youth activities, which included animal balloons from balloon artist Sonia Connelly, a crafts table courtesy of Crossway Chapel and the North Aurora Mothers Club cookie walk.

A total of 15 club members made enough cookies to fill 200 bags for the walk, said Becky Klitzkie, the club’s membership co-chair.

“Most of the kids went home with multiple prize bags, which is fun for them,” Klitzkie said.

Kane residents urged to get flu shots during Vaccinate Illinois Week editorial@kcchronicle.com The Kane County Health Department has joined the effort to promote Vaccinate Illinois Week, which runs through Dec. 13. A news release identified Vaccinate Illinois Week as a statewide observance focused on educating the public about the importance of flu vaccine during the fall and winter months.

According to the release, Kane County has seen increases

in reported visits to the county’s hospital emergency departments the last two weeks. Barb Jeffers, the executive director of the county health department, stated in the release that “the single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.”

“While there has been an intense focus on Ebola, people shouldn’t forget that influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death,” Jeffers stated in the

release.

The release said public health officials recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older should be vaccinated against influenza, “especially pregnant women, young children, people 65 years of age and older, and anyone with underlying health conditions like asthma, diabetes or a weakened immune system.”

Jeffers stated in the release that the Centers for Disease Control “estimates that between

made to protect against four different flu viruses (called quadrivalent shots). An eggfree shot for those who have egg allergies has also been approved for people 18 years of age and older.

SUGAR GROVE – Margo Roethlisberger of Sugar Grove was zeroing in on possible Christmas presents at a craft show Saturday at John Shields Elementary School, part of Sugar Grove’s Holiday in the Grove event.

The annual festivities included breakfast and photos with Santa Claus, children’s activities and Mrs. Santa’s Sweet Shoppe.

Roethlisberger said she was there with her husband, Doug, and extended family, including a daughter and her husband, a granddaughter, a sister, three nieces, a sister-inlaw’s sister and her husband and their two children.

“We spend time together as a family,” Roethlisberger said, laughing. “And we got to have breakfast and see Santa, and now we’re shopping for my nieces’ mom and dad for

“It got to the point where she was ready to step away from that,” McCannon said.

“Another lady ran it for a year, and I realized, you know, the

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If St. Charles East’s gymnasium is beginning to feel claustrophobic to the St. Charles North boys basketball team, the North Stars can be excused.

All five games North has played this season have been at East, and the North Stars have hit a rough patch – especially when the host Saints are providing the opposition.

For the second straight Saturday night, East handed North a double-digit defeat, this time 72-62 in a game the Saints led by 22 points after three quarters.

The Saints (5-1, 2-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) capped an impressive weekend after winning at two-time defending champion Larkin the night before. Eleven Saints scored on the night even as East remained without starter James McQuillan (concussion).

“I think we showed that we have a lot of weapons,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “It’s hard getting some kids in the game. We have 160 minutes and we probably have 10 guys that we can play, night in, night out.”

Containing East point guard Cole Gentry again proved a tall order for the North Stars.

North go-to player Jake Ludwig picked up his second foul while guarding Gentry late in the opening quarter.

North (2-3, 0-1 UEC River) trailed by only two after the first quarter, but with Ludwig sitting the entire second quarter, the Saints’ lead swelled to 37-22 by halftime, with much of their separation coming in a fruitful final 90 seconds of the half.

“Maybe you leave [Ludwig] in in that situation, but when you believe in your bench and you believe in your depth, you don’t,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “Plus, until the end of that half, it was six, eight points, which is manageable.”

who drilled North, 70-49, last week for third place in the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament.

“This is part of the process, and if anyone thinks the process ends in December, they’re sadly mistaken,” Poulin said.

“We’re a good basketball team and we’re going to be a good basketball team. When it’s all said and done, people will understand that and respect this group.”

North returns to action at noon Sunday against St. Patrick in a shootout at Ridgewood.

BATAVIA – Capitalizing on good positioning behind its muses’ bench, the Geneva student section peppered the Vikings’ boys basketball team with plenty of pregame encouragement Saturday.

Fittingly, one outburst stood out above the rest: “WHY ARE YOU SO TALL?!?”

Geneva’s formidable front line earns plenty of attention, to be certain, but with a group still searching for an early-season identity amid injuries and lineup shuffling, it’s not the team’s lone asset.

A 58-40 victory against Upstate Eight Conference River Division archival Batavia offered the latest proof.

“Even if our offense isn’t run crisp, we know that we can still score the basketball,” Vikings senior wing Nate Navigato said. “We have a lot of players on the team who can score the ball, inside and out. So it’s definitely a very, very good thing.”

No question, another boon for the Vikings (5-0, 1-0 UEC River) is Navigato, a versatile, Buffalo-bound standout Geneva coach Phil Ralston

called “probably the most unselfish 30-point scorer you’ll ever find.”

That was Navigato’s gamehigh offensive output against Batavia (4-2, 0-2), which fell behind by double digits early but rallied back to within three points on Canaan Coffey’s 3-pointer midway through the third quarter.

“They were really trying to dissect us inside and we pushed them out a little bit, and I think we were able to make them uncomfortable in everything they were doing,” Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos said. “Fourth quarter, a little mini-run there with Navigato getting loose, it ends up being 10, 12 points.”

Geneva started distancing itself after a timeout following Coffey’s 3.

In Ralston’s view, the Vikings were allowing the Bulldogs’ pressure and raucous home atmosphere to interfere with their game plan of controlling the tempo.

Perhaps the most demonstrative exhibit came with 5:47 left in the third quarter, when referees whistled Vikings 6-foot-8 junior post Loudon Vollbrecht for a technical foul as he took exception with the offensive foul he’d been charged with moments before.

Now saddled with four fouls, Vollbrecht (11 points, seven rebounds) took a seat on the bench and began watching his teammates emerge.

Dear Abby: My husband, “Norm,” has become profoundly deaf. He has a cochlear implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other; neither has helped much. He has extreme difficulty with speech recognition. We can talk together in the quiet of our home as long as I sit right next to him and speak slowly.

We use assisted-listening devices to communicate with each other in the car or at a restaurant.

Norm’s hearing loss has affected us as a couple. We no longer have a social life.

When Norm and I are out together, we become “invisible” to other couples. It’s just too much work for anyone to communicate with us.

We are about to move to a retirement community where one meal a day is included in the dining room. I’m worried about how we will navigate the social aspects of eating with others, who will rapidly decide they don’t want to eat with us again because of the difficulty of trying to chat with Norm.

Norm is well aware of this problem. He has proposed that he eat alone in our apartment while I go to the dining room and meet people, unencumbered by his impairment.

During the bidding at the bridge table, it is important to evaluate your hand correctly. It is not a fixed value – the high-card count. The bids of the other players can raise or lower the apparent strength of your hand. This week, let’s look at some evaluation issues.

In today’s deal, what should South do after the given start to the auction? And do you agree with his initial pass?

Taking the second question first, I do not. Two aces and a king are usually worth an opening, especially with a five-card suit (and a major), and – very important – an easy rebid on the next round.

After the given start to the auction, North judged well to invite game opposite a passed partner, realizing that his singleton rated to be valuable. Then South, who had an absolute maximum, should have immediately bid four hearts.

He could not have had a stronger hand.

At the table, though, South passed. However, he played it nicely. He won the first trick with his club ace and led his spade.

And when West ducked, declarer won with dummy’s king and continued with the spade queen, discarding a diamond.

Later, when the hearts were 2-2 and the spade 10 dropped, South took 12 tricks.
