BATAVIA – Kane County Audubon has planned a bird walk for 8 a.m. today at Nelson Lake/ Dick Young Forest Preserve, 39W115 Main St., Batavia.

Participants should meet in the parking lot by the silo on Nelson Lake Road, south of Main Street and west of Randall Road. Participants can walk as much or as little as they want of the hike around the lake, which is more than three miles. The event is open to the public. Stealthy and quick, this weasel recently was spotted hunting in the rafters of the garage at Hickory Knolls. completely positive of this most recent weasel sighting, Greg would have needed to see the animal’s tail. On longtailed weasels, the appendage measures anywhere from 3 to 6 inches long and has a black tip; on least weasels, the tail is about 1 inch long, with no black tip.) Regardless of species, our weasel neighbors are renowned for one trait in particular.

These slender, sinewy creatures are such efficient predators, they often are regarded as killing machines. Long-tailed weasels, which range in size from 11 inches (small female) to 16 inches (large male) in length can consume prey as large as chipmunks, squirrels and rabbits. Least weasels, with a size range of 8 to 10 inches in length, specialize in smaller prey like mice and voles.

With their sharp teeth and

lightning-fast movements, weasels make quick work of their intended meals, typically applying a few swift bites to the base of the skull or, sometimes, the trachea. During times when prey is abundant, weasels are known to cache food, ostensibly saving it for later. But since these meals are meaty, their “shelf life” is limited; they’re also why finding lots of flies around the opening of a small burrow is a good clue that the home belongs to a weasel. This tendency to take more than can be consumed at one time has led to weasels’ reputation as being wanton killers. In truth, their hunting prowess comes more out of necessity than anything else. The combination of a high metabolism and small stomach means these carnivores need to eat the same way Chicagoans vote – early

We’re hopeful that this new addition will find our garage to his liking. After all, it provides plenty of crevices and crannies for shelter, and a menu that’s literally all-you-can-eat. It’s a great deal for a tiny carnivore like M. nivalis.

and often. In fact, on average a weasel will consume 50 percent of its body weight in prey each day, and even more during the cold-weather months.

Such a great nutrient demand is good news to Greg and I and the rest of the naturalist staff, because the garage where the weasel was prowling is known for its high density of rodents – especially mice.

These guys, cute as they may be, wreak havoc on our stores of native plant seeds. Traps do little to keep the population down, and our other means of control – a very large garter snake – takes winters off.

So the other day we had a bit of an oddball show up here at the ‘Knolls. Slinky and furtive, he skulked in the shadows and did his best to avoid detection.

Frankly, he probably would have gone unnoticed, were it not for the sharp eyes of our coworker Greg Pipis.

Being the quick-thinking sort, Greg (who also was a participant in the monster buck incident a few weeks ago) recognized just what he was dealing with. Rather than confront the individual, and risk undue harm, he reacted exactly as any modern, smartphone-carrying naturalist would: He snapped a picture and texted it to me.

In a little twist of irony, I was just leaving a seminar about how to handle building intruders when I got the message. I enlarged the photo and analyzed the stranger’s unusual features. Small head.

Tiny ears. Dark, beady eyes.

Let me tell you, this guy was a real weasel.

A bona fide mustelid.

Mustelidae is the largest family within the order Carnivora. This diverse group includes 56 species in 22 genera and runs the gamut from otters, badgers and wolverines on down to mink and, yes, weasels. Here in Kane County, we have two species of weasel, the long-tailed weasel, Mustela frenata, and the least weasel, M. nivalis. Although the latter, littler one is considered to be more unusual, it’s the one we seem to encounter the most in our adventures in and around the Hickory Knolls Nature Area. Since Greg estimated the weasel he spotted to be about 8 inches long, we’re almost positive it was a least weasel.

Last spring, I saw one ducking in and out of the crevices of a rock pile, and our basement chest freezer (aka The Freezer O’ Fun) holds the remains of not one but two M. nivalis.

CHRISTMASTIME IS HERE Christmas Walk kicks off season’s delights in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With the temperatures at a balmy 34 degrees, a huge crowd filled Third Street in Geneva on Friday night, waiting for the annual Christmas Walk celebration to begin.

The Merry Carolers kept the songs coming until the first candy cane was presented to Mayor Kevin Burns.

Santa Lucia – the Swedish symbol of Christmas – came out with her attendants, passing out pepparkakors, traditional spiced ginger cookies.

But the big scene was Santa’s arrival: As he came up on stage to be greeted by Burns, the crowd let up a cheer.

And just as quickly, quieted down for the lighting of the Great Tree, a towering fir on the lawn of the old courthouse. One moment, it was shrouded in darkness, then as the countdown went from 10 to 1 and it suddenly filled with thousands of brightly colored lights, the crowd again cheered.

The kickoff of the annual weekend celebration extends to Sunday. A full schedule is available on the Geneva Chamber of Commerce website, www.genevachamber. com.

Many have made the event a part of their own holiday tradition, such as Jan Schneider and Robert O’Brien of West Chicago.

“We’ve just been coming probably for the last six years,” Schneider said “We just come for the tree lighting and the festivities. Good times.”

“I just like to watch the people – and see Santa,” O’Brien said.

“We are here to celebrate and help bring in the new Christmas season, and watch them light up the tree and visit a few shops,” Lindner said.

Stephanie Burns of Batavia was with her mother, Laura Conrab of Elgin, trying to build a Christmas tradition for her young daughter Reese Burns, 4.

“We are here because we love Christmas and it is something we want to start as a tradition in our family since we’re newer to the area,” Burns said. “This is my first time being out here during the Christmas Walk.”

Many of the stores’ attractions had long lines, such as the candy canes being made at Graham’s, the free doughnuts at Hahn’s Bakery and the frosting shots being offered at The Latest Crave cupcake

shop.

Luke Cramer, Marshall Miller and Sam Limonez, all of Geneva, were putting the doughnut batter into a hot fryer, catching them hot and transferring them into cinnamon sugar or other gooey topping.

“We get the dough ready

with a cake mix old-fashioned style and we put them in the fryer, the doughnut machine,” Limonez said. “We do this every Friday at Hahn’s Bakery, give free donuts away.”

Dan Janis and his daughter, Hannah, 6, were having a nosh on a fresh doughnut while his wife, Tara Burghart,

was waiting to get hers.

“This is something we’ve been coming to every year since we’ve been in Geneva,” Janis said. “And it seems like it’s one of those times the whole community comes together. And it’s fun for the kids and we love coming down here. That’s the thing, we see all her friends as we’re walking down the street and that’s what’s really special about it.”

Lois and Ray Greene of Solon, Iowa, were about 10th in line, standing outside the Latest Crave. Lois Greene said they were visiting her daughter who lives in Geneva.

“Frosting shots – oh they’re good, they’re very good,” Lois Greene said. “They’re little cups with frosting in them and they give them out to everybody.”

And her favorite flavor?

“Anything, as long as it’s frosting,” Lois Greene said.

Lisa was born July 8, 1968, in Aurora, Illinois, the daughter of Michael and Linda (Baketz) Fletcher. She married Jim Appel, Jr. on August 22, 2007 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She worked for Rath-Gibson as an accountant. Lisa enjoyed scrapbooking, camping and her dogs, Harley and Lola.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A young Joe Marconi used to say that someday he would own a big house on a hill in Cleveland, Ohio, said his wife, Addie.

Marconi did not end up owning that big Cleveland house, but instead he ended up buying several properties in Batavia before eventually moving and building a legacy there, said Michael Marconi, one of his two sons.

at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, his family said. He was 88.

A visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. The visitation will continue from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Moss, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral service at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2300 Main St., Batavia.

Sheila was born on April 25, 1939, in Chicago to Winifred (nee O’Brien) and Joseph V. McAtee. She attended Maria High School in Chicago graduating in 1958.

Sheila met her husband Norm “Larry” at the Highland Cab Company in Chicago, Illinois where they were both employed, they married in a civil ceremony on January 30, 1959, in Chicago. They later moved their new family to West Chicago, where they renewed their wedding vows at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They moved their growing family to Valley View, Illinois in the late 1960’s, where she still resided.

Sheila worked for many years and retired from Western Electric/AT&T. Sheila was a loving and caring Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Friend, and an awesome Mother-in-Law. Sheila was an avid reader often following the writings of author Tom Clancy. She also enjoyed the music of the Beatles and spent many hours in her retirement years mastering video games, asked one time why she enjoyed the video games so much, her response was “I am reliving my younger years, and I am having fun!”. Sheila reveled in being a Mother and Grandmother, her life revolved around her children, grand children and most recently some “great grand babies”. Each one held a very special place in her heart, we are all better people from the love Sheila showered on all of us.

Sheila cherished her Irish Catholic upbringing and carried it with her through out her life. She instilled those beliefs and values into the lives of her children. She brought much happiness to her family and friends.

Sheila lived life to the fullest up until her illness robbed her of her ability to “Get up and go”. She taught many valuable life lessons to all of us that we will carry through out our lives.

was buzzing, with kids and families flocking to participate in holiday-themed activities, such as a visit with Santa, a mini-train ride on the front lawn of the community center and cookie-decorating areas.

Jinglepalooza is the new name of an event that used to be a part of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Stroll.

This year, the Christmas Stroll was moved to the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, but because not every business at the community center could participate, it was decided that the center’s event would remain on the first Friday in December.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson was in attendance at Friday’s event, and he also was at last week’s Christmas Stroll.

“I think it’s great,” he said. “It brings people to town, twice. It exposes the community, twice. It’s fantastic.”

He looked over to a line of children waiting to visit Santa and noted that “Santa’s getting a workout.”

Marshall Potts, 3, was sitting on Santa’s lap, as his mother, Terra, watched. Terra Potts said the family just moved to Elburn in April, and they never before had been to Elburn’s community center. The event was a good excuse to go, she said, and she was joined by her friends, the Dvoraks.

Helen Dvorak, Brooklyn’s mom, said she also had not previously been to the Elburn community center.

She said it was a fun time, an opportunity to see Santa and get out with the kids.

She said such events are important.

“They’re only little once,” she said.

nounced Friday.

The event was part of the St. Charles Holiday Homecoming weekend that featured the Lighting of the Lights ceremony, sleigh rides, visits with Santa, a holiday movie and more. The Downtown St. Charles Partnership, which presented the events, reported the parade set an attendance record with an estimated 17,500 people. A news release indicated the previous record of 15,000 was set in 2013.

Joe Marconi was born and raised in Depression-era Cleveland and was the son of Italian immigrant parents. His first connection with Batavia was in the 1970s as a traveling salesman selling women’s clothing, his other son David Marconi said.

One of his clients was a clothing store in Batavia, and he ended up buying the store and other properties in downtown Batavia. His pride and joy was the Gammon Corner House where he lived on the top floor, Michael Marconi said.

Michael Marconi followed his father into the business and became an industrial real estate broker who also helped managed his father’s properties.

Instead of following his father into the business, David Marconi went to Hollywood and became a director and screenwriter. His credits include the films “Enemy of the State” and “Live Free or Die Hard.”

The Marconi sons said a recent example of their father’s tenacity was the class-action lawsuit he filed in August over Batavia’s investment in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus. Michael Marconi said the lawsuit will continue in the court system. The lawsuit came from a place of concern for the city because of the high electric rates its residents currently

The spy inside THE WASHINGTON POST Dangers are growing in cyberspace. Not only are thieves learning to siphon off millions of credit card numbers and email addresses, but elaborate pieces of malware are capable of spying on whole organizations for long periods of time, capturing computer screens, keystrokes and data, transmitting it all to distant servers without being detected.

Symantec, a cybersecurity company, has announced the discovery of a new example of this sophistication, called Regin, apparently designed for intelligence collection and comparable in power and complexity with Stuxnet, the computer worm reportedly used by the United States a few years ago to sabotage Iran’s uranium enrichment program. The new spyware does not resemble the evasive bits of code that scoop up credit card data. Rather, according to Symantec, Regin is built for longterm, under-the-radar espionage and surveillance; it comes with many modular pieces that can be custom-fitted to the target of the attack; and it already has been used against governments, infrastructure operators, businesses, academics and private individuals.

“It goes to extraordinary lengths to conceal itself and its activities on compromised computers,” the company reported.

“Its stealth combines many of the most advanced techniques that we have ever seen in use.”

Threats like this are “rare,” the company said, and the sophistication underscores how significant resources are being poured into this kind of mega-weapon in cyberspace. The Post’s Ellen Nakashima reported that the spyware also can grab control of cellphone towers and monitor calls.

But who is behind it? Symantec could not identify the

origins. Confirmed infections mostly have shown up in Russia (28 percent) and Saudi Arabia (24 percent) but none in the United States, Israel or Britain.

It may well be another example of American ingenuity in service of intelligence missions, like Stuxnet, but the reality of cyberconflict is that fingerprints can often be difficult to discern. The line between defense and offense, and between nation-states and other groups, can be hazy. Another security firm, Cylance, has reported that Iranian groups hacked into a range of international targets, including airlines, military and energy complexes, hospitals, telecommunications and other institutions.

Networks in the United States remain vulnerable to intrusion, disruption, theft, espionage and attacks that could produce physical damage, all weaknesses that cry out for a more aggressive defense than has been mounted so far.

Although the U.S. military is standing up a major cyber effort, both offensive and defensive, private-sector networks in the nation are overly exposed.

These networks are the backbone of the economy – health care, education, transportation, energy and countless other critical functions. In the future, attacks are certain to be aimed at them with potentially dire consequences.

Warnings about this have been issued for several years, with insufficient effect. Adm. Michael S. Rogers, the new head of the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command, recently predicted a cyberattack on critical U.S. infrastructure – such as water or electrical systems – in the next decade, saying that it is “only a matter of when, not if, we are going to see something dramatic.” He added, “This is not theoretical.”

Need to co-exist in Campton Hills Campton Hills village government has so many internal problems these days, it’s a wonder village officials have any time left over to attend to the business of their constituents.

It has been an especially combustible stretch for Village President Patsy Smith and the village. When will enough be enough?

A special meeting that went late into the night Tuesday resulted in trustees voting to reinstate Jennifer Johnsen as village administrator and for Police Chief Daniel Hoffman’s contract to be extended until May. Both of those actions were contrary to the wishes of Smith, who seems to be running low on board allies. Smith placed Johnsen on administrative leave in late November for undisclosed reasons and

previously indicated she had someone else in mind to become police chief.

Smith questioned the board’s authority to reinstate Johnsen, who was among the village officials Smith accused of violating Illinois’ Open Meetings Act last month.

The dysfunction does not end there. The board can’t agree to pay its bills and continues to squabble about the accuracy of meeting minutes despite the presence of a recording secretary or court reporter.

In the fall, Village Trustee Al Lenkaitis Jr. filed a police report against Smith, alleging she pushed him as he sought to discuss village business in her office.

It might be unfair to direct all of the blame toward Smith for the excessive fric-

tion, but she certainly is the common denominator.

Campton Hills residents should take a close look at this ongoing drama in the coming months with an eye toward the future.

Trustee Harry Blecker has announced he will run for village president this spring and should provide at least one alternative to Smith if she opts to pursue re-election.

Smith, the only village president since Campton Hills incorporated in 2007, has put in ample time and emotional investment on the village’s behalf. If she intends to secure a less polarizing legacy, though, Smith would be well advised to demonstrate that she can co-exist with her colleagues more constructively – and hope it’s not too late.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

King is accused of killing his wife and then placing her body on Union Pacific railroad tracks less than a half-mile from their Geneva home.

Sams said in court Friday that the state is aware of who the witnesses are and has no issue with Hallock’s ruling. As of Friday evening, the next court date for the case is Dec. 12.

King has remained in the Kane County Jail since July 8 on a $1.5 million bond, according to online records.

Man accused of growing marijuana released from jail

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A St. Charles Township man charged with manufacturing marijuana was released Wednesday from the Kane County Jail after his mom posted his $15,000 bail, according to court records.

Nancy Harvey of Downers Grove secured a $15,000 signature loan Nov. 24 for her son David Robbins’ bail, according to a sworn affidavit.

“The money to be utilized for the posting of this bail is not the fruit of any criminal or unlawful activity,” Harvey wrote in the affidavit. “I obtained it directly from my bank as a personal signature loan.”

Robbins’ sister, Deborah Robbins, and Harvey are responsible for repaying the loan, court documents state. Judge James Hallock in November denied Robbins’ request for a reduced bond.

Prosecutors had requested that any bail money posted

for Robbins, 44, be verified as legal. A Kane County sheriff’s office special operation unit seized 463 live plants in various stages of growth and more than 6,000 grams of packaged marijuana Nov. 12 after executing a search warrant at Robbins’ property on the 38W500 block of Mallard Lake Road in St. Charles Township.

Robbins was charged with manufacture/delivery of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana, a Class X felony; and Class 1 felonies of possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and production of more than 200 marijuana plants, according to court records.

Robbins also was charged with violating an order or protection filed against him by his father, J. Michael Robbins, after two handguns and a rifle that David Robbins was supposed to turn over were found during the Nov. 12 search.

The next court date for the case is Jan. 9, according to court records.

Obamacare continues to impact our lives in a negative way, but something makes me believe that was Mr. Obama’s plan from the start. His concerns have nothing to do with honesty or success. He wants control as a dictator would.

That is a lousy way to perform the job as president of the United States.

Does that make sense?

Anything a politician does for the people – when they promise things – is for their own good. It’s for the votes, nothing more. As for the person who called in, “My dog is always there for me,” yes, my dog is, too. In today’s world, it’s very different. I’m a baby boomer, and what it was when I was younger, it’s not like that now. I don’t think things are going to get better with the economy.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County judge Friday ruled two people could be material witnesses in a Geneva man’s murder case.

Judge James Hallock made a finding for the material witnesses after speaking with Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams and Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress, who is representing Shadwick King in the case.

King, 47, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen. King’s jury trial is set to begin on Feb. 2, a nearly twomonth delay from the initial Dec. 8 trial date. Childress filed a request for a speedy trial in late August.

Junior Evan DiLeonardi is heeding the call in impressive fashion.

Giving up four inches to brawny Larkin forward Christian Negron, DiLeonardi frustrated the highly touted sophomore Friday, keeping him scoreless for the first three quarters of East’s 62-54 win over the twotime defending Upstate Eight Conference River champions.

“We knew we had to do something about him or else he’d hurt us really badly,” DiLeonardi said. “So we worked on it in practice all week, tagged him, tried to get him to not touch the ball and take him out of the game completely. I think we executed it pretty well today.”

That required tremendous resolve from DiLeonardi, who acknowledged Negron’s length and wingspan challenged him physically in unprecedented fashion.

“I’ve got to use my quickness, try to get around him, get in front of him, just beat him to the spot,” DiLeonardi said. “It’s hard. He’s a big kid.”

Negron scored 10 points in the fourth quarter but by then the Royals were chasing what proved to be an insurmountable deficit, coming no closer than five points in the quarter.

DiLeonardi, also a soccer standout, has started the past two games because of a concussion to junior forward James McQuillan. The way DiLeonardi has defended, he’s looking at extensive playing time even when the Saints are at full strength.

“He is just in such great shape and physically just able to keep up with anyone,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “He did the same thing with [Northwestern recruit] Jordan Ash, holding him to five when we played St. Joe’s. He’s just a tough kid. I can say now we have a lockdown defender in our program. He has proven it by really doing a great job on two of the

Larkin (4-2, 1-1 UEC River) – which dropped its first conference game since the 2012-13 season – doesn’t have as proven of a backcourt as the past couple seasons so limiting Negron is an obvious focal point for Royals opponents. Though Negron stands 6-foot-6, Larkin coach Deryn Carter

largely deployed him on the wing with a nod to Negron’s long-term development. Carter said Negron is not used to being denied the ball on the perimeter as fiercely as what he encountered Friday.

“One thing we’ve told him is we’re going to let him go through some growing pains,” Carter said. “We’re

not going to just play him block to block because that’s not what’s best for him and ultimately for our team and our program. We let him get some growing pains out there, but he’ll learn from it.”

East (4-1, 1-0 UEC River) led at halftime, 26-19, and expanded its lead to 17 points late in the third quarter on a Mick Vyzral 3-pointer before the Royals made late inroads.

Senior point guard Cole Gentry scored a game-high 20 points – including 8 for 8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter – while Vyzral (14) and senior guard Jake Asquini (12) also hit double figures for the Saints, who outrebounded the Royals, 32-24.

Forward Tanner Gardon hit a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter and led the Royals with 15 points. Negron had 10 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.

The Saints turn around to face St. Charles North tonight for the second time in a week. In deference to Larkin’s recent history, Woods pegged the Royals as the preseason team to beat, but he’s not placing too high of a premium on Friday’s triumph.

“To come here on the road, I’m very happy, but … this is only the first battle [in the conference race],” Woods said. “There’s going to be many more to come and it’s going to factor in with a lot more teams besides ourselves, so I wouldn’t be too eager to crown anyone a conference champ at this point because there’s a long way to go.”

First, the matter of the scoreboard. The Kaneland girls lost to host Morris, 4342, before the boys suffered a 52-46 defeat in both programs’ Northern Illinois Big 12 East openers.

The closing seconds of both games also included plays that, while exciting, did not have impacts on the final result. For the girls, Knights freshman guard Jenni Weber swished a 3-pointer that provided the final margin but little else as Kaneland was out of timeouts when the ball fell through the basket with about 4 seconds left.

At night’s end, Morris senior Austin Patterson elevated for a dunk that didn’t beat the final buzzer of the boys game. The Redskins student section rushed the floor just the same.

Both Knights teams were in position to send their own backers into respective feelgood frenzies.

In the girls game, Kaneland (4-1, 0-1 NI Big 12 East) nearly overcame 7 for 38 shooting and an 8 for 16 effort from the free-throw line after halftime.

The Redskins (5-1, 1-0) seemingly took control with a 10-1 run in the second half before the Knights rallied back behind Ally VanBogaert (12 points) and Taylor Eaves (six).

“We definitely can win, and we are way better than what we played, but that last 3-pointer, I mean, it went in.

It could have gone out,” Weber said. “I was kind of hoping for an and-one, but that only happens once in awhile.”

Kaneland committed 25 turnovers while losing its first game in a week.

“I think the turnovers were definitely a problem for us tonight,” junior center Madison Edwards said. “I think the rebounding could have been better, and I don’t think it was just one person.

We lost as a team tonight.”

Relying on aggressive play from junior center Jake Gomes (14 points), Kaneland’s boys team (1-4, 0-1) sprinted to early leads in both halves.

The Redskins trailed by just five at the break, but the lead quickly grew to 11 when Dylan Vaca (13 points) converted a three-point play

at the 5:01 mark of the third quarter.

Morris (5-1, 1-0) responded after that, as the Redskins’ hustle and rebounding by committee sparked a busy stretch at the free throw line.

After attempting zero free throws in the first half, Morris went 18 for 30 from the line in the second half.

With 7:27 left in the game, Ryan David’s long jumper rattled in to give Kaneland a 36-32 lead.

The Knights went nearly 6 minutes without scoring after that while struggling to

contest big 3s from Evan Bjelland (21 points) and Patterson (15).

“We just kind of buckled down and started playing team defense, and defense wins games and goes on to win more and more games,” Patterson said.

Shortly after calling the 6-foot-5 Gomes “a load” offensively, Knights coach Brian Johnson lauded Gomes’ play on the other side of the floor.

Johnson wasn’t reluctant to praise the rest of the group, either, after the team’s losing streak reached four games.

“It wasn’t from a lack of effort,” Johnson said. “This is the most inspired I’ve seen our boys all year. So I was a little worried about [that] coming into the game, and I’m glad to see that we fought hard. There’s no shame in losing when you fight hard.”

“We definitely can win, and we are way better than what we played, but that last 3-pointer, I mean, it went in. It could have gone out. I was kind of hoping for an and-one, but that only happens once in awhile.”

“I started off pretty rough and just wasn’t doing that well but I knew the team needed me so I tried to work as best I could to get my takedowns and change the score,” Parsons said. “I think just my attitude, knowing I had to win for the team and know that I had to change what I was doing and how I was acting. I just needed to fight through it and not feel sorry for myself.”

Vikings senior Austin Choan won a major decision at 195 pounds, defeating North’s Stewart Vazquez, 10-2.

“I just went out there and stayed calm, kept it under control,” Choan said. “I saw the guy was being very spastic with what he was doing so I knew I just needed to wait it out, wait

for the opportunity to hit my moves.”

Choan was ranked 10th in state at the start of the season and finished fourth at the invite last weekend.

The Vikings are well-balanced across various weight classes this season and the early season cobwebs are starting to be shaken off, Choan said.

“I think it’s great that we have four seniors ranked in state this year. I think that we’ll go really far and I’m really proud of the way we’ve been wrestling so far. You get back in the swing of things at the beginning and pick it up and run at the end.”

The Vikings earned forfeits at the 106, 132, 160, 182, 220 and heavyweight pound classes.

Chernich was pleased with his side’s performance on the evening and was looking forward to Saturday’s action, which will see the Vikings compete against host Lincoln-Way West, Downers Grove North and Round Lake.

“They (St. Charles North) have a really good 113 pounder and they had a couple good kids who were out so that hurt them,” Chernich said. “We have a nice team this year.

We’re strong throughout our lineup and our guys did what they should have done so I’m happy.”

“Tomorrow will be another test for us, so we’ll see, but I think we’re pretty strong.”

West Chicago took a 17-4 lead after the first quarter.

“The start of the game is what came back to haunt us at the end. We fought back. …

I knew we would, we have a team that kept fighting,” Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos said.

“Seventeen to four to start the game, we can’t chase like that.”

For Batavia, it is back-toback games with slow starts.

The Bulldogs trailed Chicago Marine Leadership Academy, 13-12, after the first quarter of last week’s Ken Peddy Thanksgiving Tournament before coming back to win that game and the tournament championship.

Friday, they faced a larger uphill climb.

Mikey Bibbs is happy to be playing with his brother, Tai. “I love it. I don’t have to play the point guard, he can take it off the dribble. I’m just trying to be his big brother and help him as much as I can,” Mikey Bibbs said. “He’s better than me, I’d say.”

West Chicago is coming off a 17-win season last year, its best since 2004-05. The Wildcats are also in the first season in the Upstate Eight River after competing in the Valley last year.

“We came into this week, prepared the way we knew we needed to prepare,” coach Bill Recchia said. “Overall, we are extremely happy with how we played tonight.”

It was a frustrating outcome for Batavia in what may have been a trap game with rival Geneva on the schedule for tonight.

“We have to come back tomorrow and play again,” Nazos said. “The best thing to happen to a team like this is you get to go back out on the court and play.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON – Burlington Central’s Sam Pryor, playing in her first girls basketball game of the season, made an immediate impact in Friday’s game against Byron.

Pryor, who missed the first five games of the season due to a knee injury, came off the bench to spark Central’s offense with 16 points to beat the Tigers, 49-36, in a Big Northern crossover game.

“My team made it easy for me,” Pryor said. “Everyone wanted to win their first home game, and Byron is a really good team, so everyone locked down on defense and Kayla [Ross] made those free throws at the end.”

Jackie Collins, also a reserve, made three key 3-pointers during the contest.

Collins’ first trey, with three minutes left in the first quarter, gave Central its first lead of the night, 7-6.

Byron’s Ellie Lehne sank a free throw with a minute left in the first quarter to tie the game. The teams remained tied at 7-all when the quarter ended. Lehne led all scorers

with 21 points.

Pryor scored her first basket at the 6:47 mark of the second quarter, which re-tied the game at 9. She scored five of the next seven points, including a 3-pointer to give the Rockets a 16-12 lead.

The Tigers retook the lead, mostly on free throws, to take a 20-19 lead at the half. Byron went to the free throw line four times in the second quarter, making six of seven shots.

Burlington Central only went the line once in the first half.

GENEVA – The Geneva wrestling team took down St. Charles North, winning 11 of 13 matches, including six by forfeit, to edge the North Stars in Upstate Eight Conference River division action.

Fresh off a successful second-place finish at the Ted DeRousse Invite last weekend at Antioch, Vikings senior Mike Huck won his 152-pound matchup against North’s Quentin Clehouse by pinfall, securing the seventh victory for Geneva.

“Basically, I just went for a front-side headlock and a nearside cradle,” Huck said after the Vikings’ 69-12 win. “I stacked him up and got the pin.”

The North Stars were victorious at 113 pounds, where ju-

nior Kolbe O’Brien defeated Tyler Landrum, and at 170 pounds, where Ethan Fredericks defeated Chris Davis by pin.

In the evening’s most competitive matchup, Geneva’s Colin Parsons defeated North’s Steve Collins at 138 pounds by an 8-4 decision after trailing, 4-0, at the end of the first period.

“We had a real nice match at 138 [pounds],” said Geneva head coach Tom Chernich.

“Colin Parsons went up a weight class since making 132 is about as low as he should go. He wrestled [Steve] Collins who is a good wrestler. He gave up the first takedown but controlled the second and third periods.

He’s had a lot of tough competition this year and is looking really good.”

Batavia’s Grimm sold on DePauw Ali Grimm called it “one of those ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ moments.”

Grimm, a senior defender for the Batavia girls soccer team, sensed instantly that DePauw was the ideal fit for her college soccer future, and she solidified that commitment this week after being accepted to the Greencastle, Indiana, school.

Grimm’s original epiphany came during a summer visit at which she played in DePauw’s soccer camp. She visited again in September, staying overnight with a team member, and her affection for the school and the sports/academics balance it offers was reaffirmed.

She told DePauw coach Megan McCormick then she planned to be a Tiger as long as admission went smoothly.

Grimm, who plans to major in economics, also considered Butler, Valparaiso, Drake and Wheaton College.

Grimm plays travel soccer through Tri-Cities Premier.

She is among a large contingent of current Bulldogs who have made college decisions, including Megan McEachern (Illinois State), Kayla Stolfa (Eastern Illinois), Karina Rosales (Wisconsin-Whitewater) and Olivia Callipari (Lindenwood).

Grimm expects the veteran Bulldogs to turn in a banner season in the spring.

“We can’t wait,” Grimm said. “We’re really hoping this season is a great one. We’ve been playing together a very long time. We’re all great friends. We’re excited. We’re going to make this one to remember for sure.”

The Bartlett matchup is considered a nonconference game; North’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover matchup will be with West Chicago, which is switching from the UEC River to the UEC Valley next season as the conference adjusts to the departures of Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley to the DuPage Valley Conference.

St. Charles East’s UEC crossover will be with typical cellar-dweller East Aurora, while the Saints will maintain South Elgin and Jacobs as nonconference opponents.

Batavia adds a marquee, new nonconference foe next year when it will tangle with Naperville Central of the DVC.

WEEKEND LIFE Change is going to do you good New Year’s resolutions, we make them … and break them.

The idea is good, but the execution, flawed. And, you know, we could do ourselves a lot of good if we only took advantage of this time-honored tradition to make some important changes in our lives. Not the “giving up potato chips” sort of transformation, although, I have seriously reduced my chip consumption and haven’t regretted it once.

What I am talking about are the really important, maybe embarrassing, super bad, unproductive personality traits that we insist on lugging around year after year even though they get in the way of our relationships, effect our self esteem, ruin our employment chances, and otherwise majorly disrupt our lives.

Wouldn’t it be nice to change something about yourself that you don’t care for, and never have to deal with that

THEORY Jamie Palmer problem again? It’s actually in your power to accomplish this. Sometimes, however, the enormity of the resolution can overwhelm us, and doom its success from the start. We focus on the goal (lose 100 pounds, marry a rock star, etc.) and somehow, for some reason we stall out. (Hum, I wonder why?)

What we don’t realize is that the secret to successful

resolution keeping is to set a realistic goal (lose 10 pounds), and work on it every day … every minute of every day.

Success with changing something about yourself is mostly habit. You have to get in the habit of doing something new or different in order for it to become a part of who you are.

Getting in the habit is really about re-programming your brain.

Your brain is like a computer’s hard drive. It stores information that you put into it and then it performs accordingly.

Like riding a bike. It took a few tries to get it right and after

that your brain was trained.

With resolutions, depending on the complexity of the goal, you could be “in the habit” after only a few weeks.

Your brain will be trained mostly after that and will help you the rest of the way. The rest of the year would be more like the maintenance period of your goal. After 365 days, that problem or personality trait that you were hoping to change is no longer a part of who you are.

Just think, as each year passes, you could be closer to becoming the person you truly want to be: healthier, happier, wealthier, more patient, a better listener, not someone who gossips, lies, etc.

For most of us, a few years of constructive resolution keeping would do us a world of good. Lets say that your resolution this year is to stop gossiping. Start on Jan. 1, and think before you say anything

about anyone that isn’t compassionate or complimentary.

Walk away from conversations where others are engaging in gossip. Tell yourself out loud that you are not the sort of person that gossips. Your brain will believe what you tell it.

Concentrate on this goal every minute of each day. It’s easy to reach your goals when they are realistic and you break them down into small steps.

Chipping in: Growing a community of helpers What a week of wild news, world! I laughed out loud when I read the tweet, “Has anyone tried turning America off and back on again?”

If only societies were as simple as computers. And then I considered how differently we each might hope to find things when the lights came back on.

Calm, thoughtful conversations (such as those some readers initiated by reaching out and offering feedback on my last column – many thanks!), where folks make efforts to truly learn what matters to each other – and why – stand a better chance, I think, at making life better and more peaceful, for us all.

Being right seems to matter much less than being open to each other.

When you are actually open, you hear what’s needed, you see new possibilities, and you do things to help.

There are so many things we all can do – right now – to help. So many.

So many, in fact, that if we opened our eyes, I think we’d discover that we’re literally tripping over opportunities.

A few days ago, it occurred to me, after my daughter and I returned home from pitching in at Casey’s Safe Haven,

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose an equine rescue in Elburn, and I watched her wrap a few gifts, that I am SO lucky to have my very own elf. I’ve been saying so, for years.

She may have entered the terrible teens (not so terrible, actually), but it’s true, she still relishes wrapping. And I relish that she relishes it, but I digress.

Anyhow, it occurred to me that if my little elf and I volunteered to wrap gifts at the Geneva Barnes & Noble store and donated the tips to Casey’s, we could help them buy horse feed and hay and heat and veterinary care.

I called the store and signed up for our shifts, and a few other eager elves at Casey’s volunteered to help, too.

Holly and I will wrap on Saturday morning and Sunday evening, and other Casey’s volunteers will be on hand on Saturday night and Friday, Dec. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Swing by and say, “Hi!” Another easy thing we can do is buy dinner at the Chipotle restaurant in Geneva Monday night (one of the only restaurants everyone in my house can agree on!), because from 4 to 8 p.m.

Dec. 8, it is donating 50 percent of its proceeds to Chip In Batavia to help homeless Batavia School District 101 students. Fifty percent! WOW! (Merely mention the fundraiser and funds will be donated.)

Chip In – Community Helpers Impacting People In Need – does so much to help Batavia’s families, and we can also help the organization in its efforts to make the holidays merry for others by participating in its “Adopt A Bag” program.

This is a project I think my kids will really like. All we need to do, according to Joanne Spitz, a Chip In founder, is bring a brown grocery bag (or two, or more) of needed items to the Rosalie Jones Administrative Building on Wilson Street in Batavia by Dec. 16.

Needed items include, one medium-sized laundry detergent; four-pack toilet paper; one box of Kleenex tissues;

a four-pack of bar soap; and one fullsize shampoo.

According to Spitz, many families and organizations helped Chip In to team up with the United Way to “adopt” 63 families from Batavia schools. Chip In wishes also to provide fresh fruit to families over the holidays.

Donations of Woodman’s gift cards to Chip In will help make that possible. Gift cards for gas, food (Aldi, Woodman’s), and from Walmart, Target, Kohl’s and the Batavia Park District are helpful anytime, too, as the organization works to support families through other trying times and crises.

Also welcome are “Gift cards for movies or local restaurants … to give families a fun night out that they normally would not be able to [have],” Spitz wrote in an email.

I try to make my family happy, despite being underappreciated by my parents and siblings. A few times I have felt so down I have wanted to end my life.

Effects of stress can be found even in our cells Dear Doctor K: I recently heard that studies are showing that stress makes us age faster. Is there anything to that?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet you are referring to studies about the effects of ongoing stress on our cells. Each of us is a collection of 13 trillion cells. Anything that causes our cells to age causes us to age. And chronic stress does cause our cells to age faster.

When we consider the signs of aging, we think about our appearance, our mobility and our physical vigor. However, our cells also display signs of aging. One sign of a cell’s age is the length of its telomeres.

What are telomeres? Inside every cell are the chromosomes that carry most of our genes.

Telomeres are at the two ends of the chromosomes. The older a cell is, the more times it has divided.

Every time a cell divides, its telomeres get a little shorter.

What does this have to do with stress? In 2004, two scientists, professor Elizabeth Blackburn and Dr. Elissa Epel at the University of California-San Francisco Medical Center, reported a study of mothers who were the primary caregivers of chronically ill kids.

They found that the telomeres in their white blood cells (which

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff help fight infection) were shorter than the telomeres of women of the same age who were living without such stress. In fact, the mothers living with chronic stress had cells that were about 10 years older – as judged by the length of the telomeres.

Other scientists have generally found the same relationship between chronic stress and the length of telomeres. And they’ve found it in people of all ages, from kindergarten-age kids to people in the 60- to 80-year age range. For example, kids exposed to lots of violence, and kids raised in orphanages, have shorter telomeres than kids of the same age not exposed to the same stress.

Even more striking, many studies are finding that people with shorter telomeres are more prone to various major diseases and to have a shorter lifespan.

In an article in the scientific journal Nature, Blackburn and Epel wrote that preliminary studies show that stress-reduction techniques might be slowing the shortening of telomeres. Wheth-

er or not that proves to be true, chronic stress is linked to alcohol abuse, smoking and obesity – each of which makes us more prone to many diseases, and to dying young.

Some doctors and scientists are predicting that we will someday routinely measure the length of telomeres in our white blood cells as part of a regular health checkup. They argue that this would identify people more vulnerable to disease and most in need of stress reduction.

How does chronic stress affect the length of telomeres? Several hormones are overproduced by people living with chronic stress, particularly the hormone called cortisol. Professor Blackburn, whose research on telomeres was honored with the Nobel Prize in 2009, says that laboratory studies show that higher levels of cortisol shorten the telomeres.

So, chronic stress really does cause our bodies to age more rapidly. It’s important to identify the causes of stress in your life and explore how to lessen them.

Some coaches can be dunces in the classroom Dr. Wallace: I read the letter the student wrote to you about his social science teacher who was also the varsity football coach. He said it was a waste of time to attend the class because the coach was more preoccupied with his coaching and the players in his class than he was about the subject he was being paid to teach.

You suggested that he speak with the teacher after class and if he didn’t change his ways, then have a parent speak to the principal. That was good advice, but I’m not sure it will promote much change in the coach’s teaching technique. Unfortunately, I think the same scenario is played out in hundreds of high schools across our nation at the expense of the students.

In many school districts, including here in the great state of Texas, the high school principals, superintendents and school board members participate in recruiting varsity football and basketball coaches. That’s because the communities expect winning teams, and if the coach doesn’t produce a winning team he is often fired. The coaches are well aware of this, so winning is the only hope for keeping their jobs since most head coaches are hired to win.

That’s why some coaches spend valuable class time in the classroom being a wizard at X’s and O’s on the chalkboard, but can be a dunce in regard to teaching and often simply assign pages to read and minimal homework.

Talking to the principal, who likely hired the coach (teacher?), is

Other than for exercise, I see no good reason to have athletic participation in our schools. – Teacher, from Texas Dear Teacher: Most principals and school superintendents are dedicated professionals who are well aware that athletics play an important role in the educational structure, but they realize that the prime goal of all education is to provide a quality education.

Many potential school dropouts chose to continue their high school education and graduate because they had the opportunity to participate in athletics. Without athletics, the marching band couldn’t perform at half time of a football game attended by parents and fellow students, and don’t leave out the cheerleaders.

They would have limited opportunities to create a feeling of cooperation and pride not only within the school’s student body, but also with the people of the community. The same is true for the basketball and swim teams.

P.S.: I was a high school English teacher and the varsity basketball coach before I became a high school administrator. And believe me when I tell you that a positive school spirit is directly related to a “job well-done” both in academics as well as athletics!

Discuss the auction with your partner. South’s two-no-trump rebid risked North’s insisting on playing in spades, expecting at least two spades opposite. South might have made a two-heart reverse, although that would have promised at least five clubs.

South starts with seven top tricks: two hearts, one diamond and four clubs. He could hope to get very lucky in diamonds (the suit breaking 3-3 and West having the king), but that is so against the odds: a priori, 17.8 percent.

Much better is to play on spades and establish two winners there.

But after winning the first trick and leading the spade queen, what does declarer do when the defenders are adroit enough to let the queen take the trick?

South needs three dummy entries. He should cash his club king, then overtake the club eight with dummy’s jack. When everyone follows, declarer leads the spade jack.

Suppose East wins and returns a heart. South wins, overtakes the club queen with dummy’s ace and plays another spade.

West wins, cashes two hearts and shifts to a diamond to the queen, king and ace. But South travels back to the dummy by overtaking his carefully preserved club three with dummy’s four and cashes the fourth spade for his ninth trick.
