Counting ‘huts’ – structures made by muskrats GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Hut two, three, four … hut, two, three, four ...

That was the phrase that kept running through my mind the other day as I walked with my friend Lorayne and her friend Gayle.

Now, don’t get me wrong.

We hadn’t been recruited by a military group, nor were we even marching (which, admittedly, would be a rare activity among us nature types).

We were, however, counting “huts” – as in structures made by muskrats.

Also known as lodges, these piles of plant parts and mud are quite obvious in our local wetlands at this time of year. Lorayne and Gayle had noticed them on their walks around their Geneva Township neighborhood, and the other day the three of us went out to have a look.

Unlike our other aquatic rodent, the beaver, which is not only larger but also stronger and builds its lodges from sticks and logs, the muskrat creates its huts from nonwoody vegetation such as cattails, reeds and rushes. These animals, which measure about 2 feet long, including a 10-inch tail, gather these materials in mounds that range in size from small – maybe 2 feet high – to large – 4 or more feet in height and 8 feet in diameter.

Once the mound is made, the muskrats will hollow out an interior chamber that can be entered only from the underside, which is under water and a great first line of defense from local predators.

A small hut may hold only one muskrat, a larger one a few more. Regardless of number, any and all occupants are insulated from the elements by the structure’s walls that can be more than 1-foot thick.

These huts, or lodges, indicate a robust muskrat population in the wetlands at Mill Creek Forest Preserve along Wenmoth Road in Batavia.

As another measure against winter’s harsh conditions, muskrats maintain holes in the ice that provide a small space to breathe and feed. Because the little guys push up debris and leftover plant parts through this hole, these piles (which tend to be smaller than lodges) often are referred to as push-ups.

Besides these assorted marshland structures, muskrats in our area might also, or instead, opt to dig underground hideaways. Like the lodges, muskrat burrows also have underwater entrances but typically are dug when the water is flowing and/ or its banks are steep. But unlike the huts, burrows can be very hard to locate; you need to look for other signs

such as tracks and scat to know if muskrats are active in stream environments.

I’m not aware of any formal studies that have been conducted in our area, but it sure seems like our local muskrats are enjoying a high point in productivity. And reproductivity, for that matter.

While it’s easy to commend, or blame, the animals for their success – they are rodents, after all – it’s really us humans that have (literally) paved the way for them.

Over the past hundred years or so, the majority of our natural wetlands have been drained, filled and otherwise modified in the name of progress. Many of these developments feature stormwater retention ponds with

aquatic plants – a mainstay in muskrat diets. And while muskrats still have lots of predators – primarily mink and coyotes – hunting and trapping pressure in our area is virtually nil.

These favorable conditions have contributed to the abundance of muskrats we see today. They also made for interesting banter as Gayle, Lorayne and I marched – I mean meandered – our way around the wetland.

We commented on the size of one hut in particular, which was almost as large as a beaver lodge. We noted the channel the critters had worn in the wetland grasses. We were curious as to just how many muskrats might inhabit that particular wetland

complex, which receives a lot of its water from the developments along Randall Road.

And we also wondered how many people really notice the muskrats, and the signs of their activity.

That last part, we realized, was just a matter of getting people interested in the nature around them. The signs are all around, and all we really need to do is pay attention.

COVER STORY Christmas Walk brings joy to start the season ‘It’s like something right out of a book or a movie – or both’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In the darkness of Geneva’s Third Street on Friday, throngs of people clustered to wait for Santa Lucia, Santa Claus and the lighting of the Great Tree, a towering evergreen on the courthouse lawn.

Mothers and fathers with little ones in strollers or with toddlers on their father’s shoulders packed in closer. Grandmothers in wheelchairs with blankets tucked in against the cold, also waited. After all, this was the kickoff to the Christmas Walk, the official beginning of the shopping season.

Mayor Kevin Burns noted the big crowds in attendance.

“Welcome to downtown Geneva, the heart of our community,” Burns said. “We’re delighted you’re here.”

Among the many families who came were Eric and Christie Griffin of Geneva with their son, Logan, 5.

“We are really lucky that we live in a place where this type of event still happens,” Christie Griffin said. “It’s nice to have a family tradition right outside your front door.”

“It’s like something right out of a book or a movie – or both,” Eric Griffin said.

Events and activities were available throughout the downtown area – from a live nativity scene and free music, to a cookie walk and used book sale.

One of the musicians performing was Tim Hardin of Geneva, who played in front of Designer’s Desk Needlework Shoppe.

Events included the 33rd annual Christmas Cookie Walk at the Geneva Unitarian Universalist Society was clearing through its stock of 850 dozen cookies.

Jeanne Neltnor, treasurer of the Friends of the Geneva Public Library, said their used book sale did very well on Friday.

“We’re doing a little better than last year,” Neltnor said.

“Tomorrow [Saturday] we have a sale, $8 a bag, starts at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. As many books as you can get into the bag.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – In exchange for a guilty plea in a 2014 animal cruelty case, the former owner of a now-defunct traveling petting zoo was sentenced Friday to probation and jail time – a resolution that animal-rights proponents described as a “huge win.”

Representatives with Wayne-based Hands and Hooves Riding, Rescue and Rehabilitation thanked the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office for making the case against Stacy Fiebelkorn a priority.

“We’re extremely grateful,” founder and president Kelly Owens said. “They really

cared.”

Fiebelkorn, 36, was charged in March 2014 after nearly 100 animals in her Mini Zoo Crew were found sick and starving, including a dozen dead. Most were found on a farm in Hampshire, and a mare and fetus were Stacy found dead on a Fiebelkorn farm near Maple Park.

She pleaded guilty to cruel treatment, a Class A misdemeanor. As part of her plea agreement, other charges against her – two counts of violating owner’s duties, a Class B misdemeanor – were dismissed.

Advanced Disposal expands its alternative fuel use in Batavia

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Advanced Disposal recently opened its ninth alternative fueling station in Batavia, according to a news release.

The company during the week of Nov. 23 opened the Compressed Natural Gas fueling station at its hauling facility, at 1660 Hubbard Ave., Batavia.

A total of 14 company trucks fill up at the station every night, the release states.

Compressed natural gas is an alternative fuel used for internal combustion engines, according to the release. It generates low hydrocarbon emissions and is considered a clean energy, the release states.

The number of trucks using the alternative fuel will increase as the company replaces retiring diesel trucks once their useful life has expired, according to the release.

“We’re proud of the fact that at the end of this year, approximately 15 percent of our fleet will run on [Compressed Natural Gas],” Advanced Disposal CEO Richard Burke stated in the release. “We continue to invest in [the compressed gas] to not only keep our fleet running cleaner and to create a more sustainable earth, but this cleaner fuel source also reduces operations costs, thereby enhancing stakeholder returns.”

The fueling station cost about $2 million to build, the release states.

About 25 percent of Advanced Disposal’s collection routes in the Batavia area run on compressed natural gas, and customers will notice the logo on the trucks reads “powered

by CNG.” A compressed natural gas truck costs between $30,000 and $40,000 more than a comparable diesel truck, according to the release.

The light show also features Christmas music, but if he sees a lot of cars waiting to get near the display, Larsen will switch to a “heavy traffic flow” version that is shorter.

Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said Friday that all has gone smoothly with Larsen’s display this year.

“I have not received one complaint yet, which is an anomaly,” Hoffman said, adding, “it’s been a source of frustration over the years.”

Hoffman said Larsen has worked to get people to use the parking lot set up near his home.

There also are many street signs instructing drivers where they can’t park. Those who ignore them can be ticketed, and Hoffman said tickets had been written in previous years.

Hoffman said he appeals for visitors to be considerate for the neighbors who live in the area, as well as normal traffic and emergency vehicle traffic.

CAMPTON HILLS – Brian Larsen said he roots for most Chicago sports teams, but when it comes to the Chicago Blackhawks, he is a “big, big fan.”

After attending this year’s celebration in Chicago after the team’s Stanley Cup championship, Larsen decided to work in a tribute to the Blackhawks as part of his annual Larsen Christmas Lights Show at his home at 42W891 Beith Road in Campton Hills.

Larsen’s shows run from 5 p.m. to midnight on weekends and from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

The tribute lasts about five minutes and features four songs, ending with “Chelsea Dagger,” which is the song played after the Blackhawks score.

Kristen Damolaris of the community center said the turnout was “awesome.” The parking lot was full, and she was expecting there would be record numbers of visitors.

At the same table with the Ockens were the Ramseys – Josie and Isabella, 5, and Maddie, 4 – also Elburn residents.

Their mother, Jen Ramsey, said it was the first time they attended the event.

“We saw an ad, and it sounded fun,” Jen Ramsey said, adding the girls also had visited Santa during the event. They have a tradition in which each girl brings the same stuffed animal for a Santa trip.

At another area of the gym, Karen Morrison was helping with craft tables for Hope Anglican Church, which meets for worship at 9 a.m. Sundays at the Community Congregation-

al Church down the street from the community center. Kids at that table were making Christmas trees, and the tables were bustling with activity.

“The kids are having a good time,” said Morrison, who said she was helping at the event for the third year.

At that time, Family Tradition members were performing in the gym’s balcony. The four women in the group are sisters – Sheila Gee, Ione Martin, Twyla Strom and Grace Anderson – originally from Elburn and still living in nearby areas. Gee said the sisters enjoy going to events in the area. Anderson said the sisters having been singing together “for all of our lives.”

“We usually stop by here every year and roam around,” Anderson said.

Damolaris called the event a success. She pointed out there were new participants this year – Marines were running a train outside of the center, and the National Honor Society was part of the event for the first time.

“This has been a huge, huge thing,” she said.

Van Der Snick became emotional while talking about the animals she and others outside the courtroom helped rescue.

They wiped blood and pus from the creatures, she said, noting

she also held one of the dead bodies.

Sarah Yakle, owner of Yakle Acres in Maple Park, provided accommodations for nearly 70 of the animals when they were moved from the petting zoo. She has since adopted some of them, she said.

Van Der Snick and Owens said they want animal owners to know that Hands and Hooves offers assistance to those struggling to care for their animals so a case like Fiebelkorn’s doesn’t happen again.

“We’re here to help people,” Owens said.

14 District 303 sets special meeting for facilities option

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Those wanting to provide input on the St. Charles School District 303 facilities choice will get a chance next week.

A special school board meeting is set for 7 p.m. Friday in the Wredling Middle School cafeteria, 1200 Dunham Road, St. Charles. It is being held specifically for the facilities options proposed by district administration.

According to a news release, the board will be presented with the four options and a summary of the community input generated through the online feedback forum.

The agenda also includes “significant time” for citizens’ comments, the release states.

Individuals will be limited to three minutes.

District administration has asked the school board to make a decision on the facilities options in January.

Superintendent Don Schlomann presented the options in a series of 15 meetings, which began in October.

According to the release, the options seek to capture opportunities for operating efficiencies based on declining student enrollment. Enrollment is 12,500 students, down from a peak of 13,900 in 2008-09, the release states.

The options are as follows: • Maintain status quo – This

has no cost savings and does not address middle school issues such as lack of air conditioning, needs in science labs and small food services areas.

• Close Lincoln and Wasco elementary schools – This would save $1.7 million annually, elementary schools would remain kindergarten to fifth grade, and it does not address middle school issues.

• Close Haines Middle School – This would save $2.8 million annually, elementary schools would become kindergarten to sixth grade, and there would be a $20 million renovation to Thompson Middle School, no referendum necessary.

• Close Lincoln, Wasco and Haines – This would save $4.5 million annually, elementary schools remain kindergarten to fifth grade and include a $45 million renovation to Thompson Middle School, which would require a referendum.

Swimmers see success at state It did it from 2006 to 2009. And now it has done it again.

The Rosary girls swim team took first place at the state meet late last month, with 192 points.

In addition, Rosary – which is located in Aurora – saw swim team member Alexis Yager, a junior from Batavia, finish as state champion in the 200yard individual medley. And it saw freshman Athena Ye of Sycamore take first and sophomore Emily Ryan of Bartlett take third in the 100 backstroke.

The school also took home two state titles in relay events.

Earning top awards as well was St. Charles North, whose team took third place at state, with 122.5 points.

North also took third in the 200 freestyle relay, and North sophomore Audrey Guyett took second in the 100 backstroke.

For Rosary coach Bill Schalz, this season marked a return to the top. For North coach Rob Rooney, it signified notable success since St. Charles High School split into North and East high schools in 2000.

The Kane County Chronicle congratulates all of those who earned honors at this year’s state swim meet.

Volunteers help holiday event season sparkle Kane County has come alive this holiday season with an array of community events and activities.

Kicking things off were the annual Electric Christmas Parade in St. Charles, the Celebration of Lights Festival in Batavia and the Christmas Stroll in Elburn.

In addition, the Christmas Walk in Geneva is taking place this weekend, as are Holiday in the Grove in Sugar Grove and activities in Kaneville.

Other seasonal activities have been ongoing in the area as well. Kane County sure knows how to celebrate the holidays!

But it’s not without the hard work and dedication of many volunteers and organizers.

We salute those who support seasonal activities via volunteering. Without their efforts, it would seem impossible to create such magical holiday events for community members – and visitors from other locales – to enjoy.

Have any interest in jumping on the volunteer bandwagon? Contact the organizers of your town’s annual celebration – or those who conduct other activities – to see how you can help.

Planning for many of the area’s larger events often takes place year-round. And volunteering during the holidays is considered by many to be a gift in and of itself.

Ryan promises a conservative agenda in Washington BLOOMBERG VIEW If it’s brave to state the obvious – and in Washington, it often is – then Paul Ryan might be the most courageous man in Congress.

“If we want to save the country, then we need a mandate from the people,” the Republican leader said in a speech Thursday at the Library of Congress. “And if we want a mandate, then we need to offer ideas. And if we want to offer ideas, then we need to actually have ideas.”

Yes, he prefaced this bit of transitive logic with the obligatory jabs at President Barack Obama. But it’s clear that Ryan, who became speaker of House just more than a month ago, is issuing a challenge not to the president but to his own party.

A lack of ideas has been the most glaring void in Republican governance in Washington, where too many legislators have adopted the role of Greek

chorus, bewailing the tragedy on stage while keeping a safe distance from the action. It’s worth pointing out that neither the party itself, in its many redoubts in the states, nor the conservative movement as a whole, in the think tanks and policy shops of the capital, suffers from this defect. But too many Republican members of Congress – especially in the House – are not known for an interest in constructive debate.

Ryan wants to turn a chorus of critics into a governing majority. Given the schisms in his party, it won’t be easy.

The speaker soon faces an early test: He’ll have to corral the votes for a viable spending plan to be signed into law before funding for the government expires next Friday.

Yet Ryan’s ambition is the right one. He promised “a tax code that rewards good work instead of good connections,” an overhaul of federal poverty programs, even an actual Republican plan to replace

Obamacare (better six years late than never, as the saying goes).

Ryan’s tone was as notable as his goals. His 2011 “Path to Prosperity” was introduced with an alarmist polemic about a nation on the “brink of bankruptcy.” Since then, unemployment and the federal deficit have plummeted, the markets have rebounded and the nation has grown stronger.

His speech is no embrace of Pollyannaish thinking, but it avoids the misguided gloom that remains a staple of the Republican presidential campaign. His vision, encapsulated in the title of his speech, is a “Confident America.”

If Ryan can confidently articulate a more positive vision for his party, attach pragmatic policy to it and rally his colleagues around it, he will be a powerful force for good in Washington. Along the way he’ll give American voters of all stripes a clearer sense of what’s at stake in 2016.

BATAVIA – It didn’t look good early for Batavia. St. Charles North forward Griffin Hammer was having his way inside and on the glass and gave the North Stars a double-digit lead in the second quarter.

But the Bulldogs stayed hungry.

Hammer got into foul trouble, never fully developing

his early rhythm, and Batavia seniors Canaan Coffey and Brett Bowman made enough plays down the stretch to hold off North, 62-56, Friday night in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division boys basketball opener for both teams.

Coffey scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, while Bowman – playing his first game of the season after injuring his right MCL in the Bulldogs’ final football game of the sea-

son – scored 15 points off the bench to provide a crucial spark.

“That’s my role on the team,” Bowman said. “Even though I (was) out two weeks, I knew exactly what I had to do to help this team once I got out here. It took a little bit, but I like to get out and run, and that’s what I was able to do tonight.”

Bowman provided his most important effort of the night at the free throw line,

connecting on 7 of 8 attempts, all of which came in the fourth quarter. With a smile, Bowman said, “I like to make my living at the line.”

Batavia (3-2, 1-0 UEC River) and Coffey saw an early deficit, which got as big as 10, midway through the second quarter, but battled back to trail by just one at the half.

Coffey said with the rowdy atmosphere like it was, he knew his team needed to see a few shots go down during that

lapse to energize the group.

“It just shows how resilient of a team we are,” Coffey said. “North is a great team and you saw how they can score the ball, especially with Hammer inside. We fought back, and I’m really proud of all of these guys. The way we battled back and got back into the game and then made plays to get the win says a lot about what we’re made of.”

‘Pushing the pace’ helps ‘Dogs roll

Major played the fall guy to punctuate the Bulldogs’ 69-7 rout of St. Charles North, pinning North 120-pounder Bruno Zuniga in 1:55 and summarily sidestepping a familiar refrain he has heard throughout nine years in the sport.

“I kind of like the nickname. Its funny,” Major said.

“Because, I mean, it kind of goes with major decision.”

Standout North Stars junior Kolbe O’Brien started the dual with a 12-0 major decision victory against Dylan Doranski at 126 pounds, but that was the only win of that sort. Falls, to be sure, were wild in both schools’ Upstate

Eight Conference River Division opener.

Batavia earned seven while winning eight of 10 contested bouts.

“Definitely just coming out hard early and pushing the pace, I guess,” Bulldogs junior 138-pounder Seth Winkle said. “That’s what we work on in the room.”

Winkle, a 30-match winner last season, secured the quickest of the team’s falls, striking in 1:10. Senior Michael Doranski, Dylan’s older brother, started the pin parade at 132 pounds, needing 1:21 to subdue North Stars foe Drew Schmitt.

Steve Dublin (152), Nick Benson (170), Derek Nutley (182) and Josh Fischer (113) also registered falls for Batavia.

In Winkle’s experience, they can be contagious.

“It gets me pumped up,” he

said, “when someone before me gets pins. … So yeah, we feed off each other.”

North’s other victory came three bouts after the win from O’Brien, a returning state qualifier who moved up three weight classes from his sophomore season.

North Stars senior Dominic Testa, a senior who worked through concussion problems last season, topped Matt Sutherland by a 4-0 decision. “ I k i n d o f Dominic just had to stay Testa o n t h e h i p s STC North and ride him out when I had the chance,” Testa said. “I couldn’t work any of my top moves, so I just tried to ride him out a little bit.”

North forfeited matches

at 160, 220, 285 and 106, but its ranks continue growing under third-year coach Ben Hummel.

“It’s different,” Testa said.

“It’s better, just having more people to wrestle with.”

At 195, Batavia junior Andrew Remali recorded his first varsity victory with a 6-3 decision against Spencer Binning. Remali filled in for Tyler Luppino, a member of Batavia’s Class 7A state quarterfinalist football team who is on the cusp of being certified at 195.

Remali navigated a late Binning takedown before channeling a late flurry to win.

“Everyone came out and was aggressive,” Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer said. “That’s what you want against our conference competition. All of our guys were ready for tonight.”

Hammer (20 points, nine rebounds) was not only on the bench in foul trouble for the Bulldogs’ 9-0 run to end the first half, but also spent most of the second half seated next to assistant coach Rob Prentiss.

Prentiss took over the coaching responsibilities for the North Stars (2-3, 0-1) for Friday’s contest after head coach Tom Poulin came down ill earlier in the day. Prentiss said he was unsure of Poulin’s condition, but said “it must have been pretty bad for Tom not to be able to be here.”

There was no denying the impact the 6-foot-5 Hammer’s fouls had on the game. Hammer had 13 points in the first half, but after picking up his fourth foul with 1:22 to go in the third quarter, with his team down by three, the junior forward remained on the bench until Prentiss made the decision to reinsert him.

“I kind of tied my hands with Griffin and tried to do the best I could,” Prentiss said.

Despite having Hammer on the bench, the North Stars were able to take a 47-46 lead after two free throws by Kyle King (10 points), but back-to-

back baskets by Coffey gave the Bulldogs a lead they didn’t relinquish. Hammer re-entered at the 2:38 mark of the fourth quarter and fouled out with 1:11 to go, with North down, 54-50.

Batavia coach Jim Nazos felt that although Coffey made some crucial plays offensively, he might have shown Friday why he’s one of the best defenders on the team, as well.

“He can do it all,” Nazos

said. “He can make plays at one end and then he’ll be the first one to want to guard the other team’s best player. He can guard any position and he’s of one, if not, the best defender we have.”

A day after the Batavia girls basketball team took down North, the boys followed suit, which sets up an interesting matchup when the Bulldogs boys travel to North for the rematch Jan. 22.

By TAMMY SWANSON editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Both the Batavia and St. Charles co-op girls gymnastic teams came out strong against DeKalb at Friday’s triangular meet in Excel Gymnastics in Geneva.

As a first meet of the season, both teams showed promise for the year.

“They are still trying to get in the swing of things,” Batavia coach Taryn Boyce said.

“They’re doing really well so far. I think they need to get their nerves under control.

They are ready for a good, strong season.”

The St. Charles co-op dominated the vault with some strong routines. Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci led her team with a 9.35. Mychaela Guy scored a 9.05. Devon Ross had an 8.65. Dani Buoy, the team’s newcomer to the event this season, received an 8.50.

“I’m doing all right for the first meet. This is my first meet competing in vault for the high school team,” Buoy said.

For Batavia in vault, Jamie Ann Clark led her team with

For Batavia on bars, Lauren Stangl scored highest for her team with an 8.70. Megan McGee followed with an 8.65.

“I was out for six months. I was cleared in October, so I’ve been working since October to get where I am now,” McGee said. “I was a little nervous at first since it was a big bone to break, but I just had to trust myself and my body knows

what it is doing, so I trained hard and here I am.”

Rachel Conover got a 7.15.

Jessica Kleist had a 6.60 and Amanda Dian got a 6.55.

“I’m really glad on how far I’ve come. I’m really happy with how my bar routine turned out. I definitely like bars the best. It’s the one I feel most comfortable with,” Stangl said.

On the beam for St. Charles, Grace Levita led her team with an 8.60. Buoy followed closely with an 8.55. Redmond-Mattucci scored an 8.00.

“I really love competing on beam. It’s really nerve racking. It’s the whole gymnastics feel,” Buoy said.

On beam for Batavia, Lillian Baty-Barr was the high scorer with an 8.25.

On floor for St. Charles, Buoy was highest with a 9.20.

Levita followed closely with an 8.95. Redmond-Mattucci came in next with an 8.60.

“It is my favorite event.

I always like to go all out on it, and I’m really a dancer at heart so it’s really fun,” Redmond-Mattucci said.

For Batavia on floor, Hannah Karz registered an 8.45.

MAPLE PARK – It took the Morris boys basketball team nearly 10 minutes to finally make a basket on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Kaneland was predominantly hitting nothing but the bottom of the net, and it was doing a lot of it beyond the 3-point arc as the Knights built a 23-1 lead after one quarter.

The Redskins didn’t know what hit them and never recovered as Kaneland cruised to a 72-41 victory in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East conference opener.

“We’re not where we want to be defensively in our manto-man defense, so with being overmatched and undermanned we’re trying to play zone and trying to shorten some games,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “We were hoping they shot the ball poorly, but with (Ethan) Conroy, (Dylan) Vaca, (Ryan) David and (Mark) Lilly shooting and (Jake) Gomes’ physicality, they have inside and outside weapons and then their pressure led to some run outs and easy baskets.”

Kaneland’s final five field goals in the first quarter were all 3-pointers. Lilly converted one during the impressive run while David and Ethan Conroy made a pair, including David’s long-range shot from well beyond the top of the key that banked in as time expired.

“I came up and jumped and thought he was going to foul me so I turned a little bit,” David said. “I just threw it up there.

It went straight on with a little too much power, but it went in.”

Kaneland (4-1, 1-0 NI Big 12 East) made nine treys as David (18 points), Lilly (15), Vaca (14) and Ethan Conroy (13) all scored in double figures as the Knights made their first home game an unforgettable one.

“We fed off of the turnovers and we all shot well,” Ethan Conroy said. “I felt pretty good at shootaround, and I thought it would carry over to the game and it did.”

The Knights actually led, 304, at one point. Morris (4-2, 0-1) went on a brief 7-0 run midway through he second quarter, but that only brought the Redskins to within 30-11.

They struggled against Kaneland’s full-court pressure most of the game and were forced into 18 turnovers, many which the Knights then converted into points.

“It was similar to the Chicago Marine game because we caught fire early,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said. “We knew Morris is down a little bit, but we knew they’d play hard so we knew we had to come out and make a run early and so we put some pressure on them.”

The Kaneland girls got off to a sluggish start in their Northern Illinois Big 12 East conference game earlier against Morris. Then they turned it on in the second quarter.

The Knights enjoyed a 13-0 run from the final minute of the opening quarter until more than midway through the second quarter to seize control in a 69-23 victory. They continued the onslaught into the third quarter, outscoring the Redskins, 17-2, at the start of the second half to take a 47-16 lead with 2:25 left in the quarter.

“We weren’t getting turnovers early,” Knights coach Ernie Colombe said. “Once we got everybody going and starting denying them the ball and forcing their shots, we were able to get out and get some easy buckets.”

Camri Conley and Vanessa Gould paced Kaneland with 12 points each while Morgan Weber had 11. The Knights certainly shared the ball as 10 players scored. Kaneland (5-01-0) was stifling on defense, as it forced 28 turnovers.

“We were all super pumped to play,” Conley said. “We had a full week to practice and playing at home in front of a packed gym was exciting We definitely had a lot of energy and it showed.”

In fact, it showed for the Knights in both games.

Bochtler taking cerebral side from Cougars to MLB New Padres bullpen coach will ‘forever be thankful’ to D’backs QUICK READ Kevin Druley Doug Bochtler retreated from reality to go hunting this weekend, secure in the knowledge that an incredible baseball opportunity had just found him.

After serving as the Class-A Cougars’ pitching coach last season, Bochtler anticipated a climb Doug to Double-A Bochtler Mobile in the parent Arizona Diamondbacks’ system in 2016. Instead, he not only is with a new organization, but working in the major leagues.

The San Diego Padres announced their field staff under new manager Andy Green this week, and the cast includes the 45-year-old Bochtler as bullpen coach.

Rest assured, he won’t be approaching this chance like he would a layout blind.

“My role will be much more of a complementary role rather than I’m somebody’s friend who is down in the bullpen answering the telephone and telling them who’s coming up,” Bochtler said.

“So it’ll be a tad more handson than the historical version of a bullpen coach’s role.”

Actually, Bochtler is somebody’s friend, or at least somebody’s confidant. Both he and Green entered the D’backs pipeline as coaches in 2011, and worked that season in extended spring training, the ground floor of the minor leagues.

As Green took a managerial route, Bochtler, a right-handed reliever for parts of six seasons with the Padres, Dodgers, Tigers and Royals from 1995 to 2000, developed a reputation as something of a staff whisperer.

Although “Boch,” as he’s known throughout clubhouses, can swap stories and jokes with the best, he took a shine to helping pitchers harness

And if you have a resource and some knowledge that can help them – whether it’s something that I heard or something that I experienced while I was a big league player – that could be the little nugget that kind of helps them get over the hump and take their game to the next level.”

Doug Bochtler San Diego bullpen coach the biomechanical side of their craft, focusing on how to be in the optimal position to deliver a pitch. The equally cerebral Green took note of how Bochtler’s staffs flourished, and the two conversed during each season even as they worked at different organizational rungs.

The D’backs summoned Bochtler to interview for their major league pitching coach and bullpen coach vacancies during last month’s general managers meetings.

Although neither opportunity panned out, Green, the D’backs third-base coach in 2015, soon came calling, asking Arizona for permission to speak with Bochtler.

“He was impressed with that and he opted to come after me,” Bochtler said.

When he’s not hunting or spending time with family, Bochtler plans to continue his coaching duties at the Cherokee Baseball Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he works with pre-teens, prep stars and collegians alike.

Bochtler, a co-founder of the facility, long has contended that spending time with young pitchers boosts his communication skills and “helps me maintain my eyes.”

He’ll simply pay that forward in the majors.

“It’s kind of multifaceted, the people that you’re dealing with at the big league level,” he said. “But, you know, the best people in the game – the best pitchers, the best position players – they’re all people that are never satisfied with where they’re at.

As if Green’s influence weren’t enough, Bochtler came away giddy from meeting with the rest of the staff this week, namely new bench coach Mark McGwire, baseball’s one-time home run king.

Bochtler faced McGwire twice during his career, walking him and allowing a flyout to the warning track on a 2-1 changeup – “Boch” even remembered the count.

Now, he gets to powwow with McGwire in what Bochtler called a “cross-pollination” set-up in which Green welcomes feedback from all corners of the coaching staff at any time.

“There are benefits from a pitcher learning from a hitter. There are benefits from a hitter learning from a pitcher,” Bochtler said. “To really just be open and free to express your ideas and opinions and doing it through the right channels without ego, it’s kind of the way things are going.”

D’backs brass similarly have jockeyed to be part of baseball’s cutting edge, and Bochtler indicated nothing different while reflecting upon his time with the organization.

Years ago, while eager to

get back into baseball as a coach, the Padres referred Bochtler to the D’backs and farm director Mike Bell, whose father, Buddy, managed Bochtler in Detroit.

San Diego and Arizona share the National League West and will meet early and often as division rivals.

The Padres host the D’backs during the second weekend of the season, from April 15 to 17, 2016.

“I’ll forever be thankful for (the D’backs) for getting me back into professional baseball in this capacity. ...

They are friends that will

be friends off the field for the rest of my life,” Bochtler said. “But when it comes to playing the game, if any knowledge that I gained while I was there is a competitive advantage, then we will take every inch of that and use it to our fullest ability while we’re playing them.”

Unlike hunting, gamesmanship knows no offseason.

How did you get into diving?

What do you expect from the group this season?

Well, last year at state, we all had the realization that none of us was graduating.

We were pretty disappointed that none of us made it to

I started out as a swimmer when I was young, so I know most of these guys and have for a while. I was a gymnast at that time, too, up until my sophomore year. I was competing at a pretty high level as a gymnast, but I stopped gymnastics and gave diving a try and I have been really happy with how it has gone so far.

St. Charles East senior diver Andrew Lewarchick spent an extensive amount of time working on technique this offseason. Lewarchick, an Illinois-Chicago commit, made it to the IHSA Swimming and Diving State Meet last season, but has much bigger plans for 2015-16, including bringing home a medal. disappointment, either. While I heard expressions of praise and even one “spectacular show!” on my way up the aisle after the performance, I also picked up on a few murmurings of concern about the “gun stuff.”

The upshot? Terrific show, if not for the over-emphasis on Ralphie’s fantasy, the BBgun-toting-kid-could-be-a-hero business. Yikes. And in a classroom, no less. Double yikes. If memory serves, this particular fantasy of Ralphie’s wasn’t quite so pronounced in the movie version. Or, perhaps I’ve just woken up to the potential impact of such a message.

Culinary expert Lidia Bastianich shares her magnum opus Master Italian-American chef and award-winning cookbook author Lidia M. Bastianich serves up a comprehensive guide to Italian cooking in “Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine” (Alfred A. Knopf).

The thick volume, coauthored with her daughter Tanya, includes more than 400 recipes. Alas, there are no accompanying food photos – but that’s only a minor inconvenience. Bastianich’s concise, easy-to-follow recipes spell things out clearly and don’t leave readers in a lurch.

A good example (below) is her classic recipe for Baked Eggplant and Eggs.

Bastianich’s recipes include such standards and Risotto Alla Milanese and Lasagna Napoletana, as well as original creations Beet Ravioli in Poppy Seed Sauce

and Bread and Prune Gnocchi, among others.

In addition, the author touches on ingredients and techniques and kitchen tools, key food terms and spices and condiments.

Baked Eggplant and Eggs (Serves 6)

• 3 Italian eggplants (about 11⁄4 lbs. total) • 1 tsp. kosher salt, plus more for salting the eggplant • 6 Tbl. extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing the gratin dishes • 3 garlic cloves, sliced • One 28-oz. can Italian plum tomatoes, preferably San Marzano, crushed by hand • 1⁄4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • 2 sprigs fresh basil, plus 6 large leaves • All-purpose flour, for dredging

TOM’S COOKBOOK LIBRARY Tom Witom • 1 cup freshly grated Grana Padano cheese • 6 large eggs • 1 tsp. dried oregano, preferably Sicilian on the branch With a vegetable peeler, peel strips lengthwise down the eggplant, leaving alternate stripes of peel. Cut off stems and slice eggplant lengthwise into 1⁄4-inch-thick slices. Line a large colander with the eggplant, overlapping if necessary; salt liberally on both sides, and let drain in the sink for 30 minutes. Rinse, drain and dry the eggplant well.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Meanwhile, to a large skillet over medium-high heat,

add 3 tablespoons of the olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the garlic. Let the garlic sizzle until golden, about 1 minute, then pour in the tomatoes.

Rinse the tomato can with 1 cup water, and add that as well. Season with 1 teaspoon kosher salt and the crushed red pepper flakes. Stick the basil sprigs in the sauce. Let the sauce simmer until slightly thickened, about 15 minutes.

Remove basil sprigs.

Spread the flour on a plate.

Lightly dredge the dried eggplant in flour, tapping off the excess. Heat the remaining 3 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

When the oil is hot, brown the eggplant in batches, about 2 minutes per side. Remove the slices as they brown, and drain on a paper-towel-lined sheet.

Once the sauce and egg-

plant are ready, brush six individual gratin dishes with olive oil. Spread a scant 1/4 cup of sauce in the bottom of each dish. Fold the eggplant slices to line and fit the gratin dishes in an even layer. Spread another scant 1⁄4 cup of sauce over the eggplant. Sprinkle sauce with about 3⁄4 cup cheese. Lay a basil leaf over the cheese and crack an egg into each dish.

Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese and the dried oregano.

Place dishes on a baking sheet, and cover with foil.

Bake until sauce is bubbly, about 15 minutes. Uncover, and bake until cheese is browned and eggs are done to your liking, about 5 minutes more for almost-set yolks.

supplement powders and tablets. Examples of insoluble fiber supplements are psyllium (Metamucil and Konsyl). Examples of soluble fiber supplements are wheat dextrin (Benefiber), methylcellulose (Citrucel) and polycarbophil calcium (FiberCon).

The supplements don’t give you the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, “good fats,” “good carbs” and healthy protein that fiber-rich foods give you, however.

The supplement powders seem to help many patients with their constipation when added to fiber-rich diets, but I never recommend just the supplements alone.

Besides being divided into soluble and insoluble categories, fiber also is divided into “fermentable” and “non-fermentable” categories. Fermentable fiber is more likely to produce gas. Some people experience increased intestinal gas when they increase their fiber intake. That’s true regardless of whether it’s soluble or insoluble.

The best way to avoid developing bothersome gas is to start with low doses and add fiber to your diet gradually. If one source of fiber upsets your digestion, try a different one in smaller amounts. It also may help to drink more water.

I also tell my patients who have started fiber and experience bloating to stick with it for at least two weeks. It may not surprise you to learn not everyone takes my advice. (And not just about dietary fiber.)

But many who do take my advice tell me the bloating does tend to go away over time.

Dr.. Wallace : I’m 12. My sister is 11. We live with our mother because our parents divorced over five years ago.

My dad remarried and my sister and I have not seen him in four years, but it’s really not his fault.

The reason is that once he got married to this other woman my mother told him he was no longer welcome in our house.

Even though my dad hasn’t seen us in a long time, he always sends us money for our birthdays and Christmas. He is also never late with child-support payments.

Our grandmother wrote and told us that our grandfather would like to see my sister and me and that they would pay for our airplane tickets to go and visit.

The problem is that our mother doesn’t want to let us go because she’s afraid we might “bump into our father.”

Dr.. Wallace : Recently you advised a teenage girl to give her baby up for adoption to a loving, caring husband and wife who can’t have a child of their own. I disagree.

Two years ago, when I was 17, I got pregnant and had a son.

Everybody, including my mother, told me to give my baby up to adoptive parents.

I thought about it, but decided I just couldn’t give my baby away.

Even though I didn’t get

married, I am very happy that I decided to keep my son.

He is a very happy and healthy young lad and is provided ample love and care by his mother.

Don’t ever underestimate the ability of teenage mothers.

Maternal instinct is given to all mothers, not just those who are over age 19 and married. – Mom, Toledo, Ohio Mom : I never underestimate the abilities of teens, and I’m seldom surprised at their aptitude to succeed. Of course, unwed teen mothers can do a marvelous job of parenting. In many cases, the baby should remain with its mother.

But there are times when the mother cannot care adequately for the infant for myriad reasons.

When this is the case, it is better for both the mother and the baby that the infant be placed with loving, caring adoptive parents. What is of prime importance is the welfare of the baby.

Giving a child up for adoption is a difficult and often traumatic decision. Faith and everlasting love for the child are constant companions of moms who make this necessary choice.

Dear Reader: Dietary fiber consists of the indigestible parts of plant foods. We need about 20 to 35 grams of fiber a day.

As you note, there are two kinds of fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water; insoluble does not. Both are important for healthy digestion, and both can help prevent heart disease, obesity, diabetes, diverticulitis (an intestinal malady) and constipation.

Soluble fiber absorbs water in the stomach and intestine. It forms a gel that slows digestion. This causes you to feel full and may help with weight loss.

Soluble fiber also slows the digestion and absorption of glucose, which is important for controlling diabetes. Finally, it decreases LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood, which helps lower the risk of heart disease.

Good sources of soluble fiber include nuts, seeds, legumes (lentils, beans and peas), oat cereals, fruit pectin (found in citrus fruits, apples, pears, apricots and peaches), and some vegetables, such as carrots.

Insoluble fiber passes through the small intestine without breaking down.

It’s important for intestinal health because it adds bulk and draws water to the stool. This aids its passage through the large intestine.

Good sources of insoluble fiber include whole grains, wheat and corn bran, popcorn, seeds, nuts, broccoli, cabbage, root vegetables, onions, green leafy vegetables and fruit and vegetable skins.

I agree with South’s four-spade overcall. A slam is most unlikely after an opponent opens the bidding, especially looking at those two heart losers.

Make life as tough as possible for the opponents. Here, though, if South had settled for one spade, North would have shown game-invitational values with spade support, and South would have raised to game.

First, East must not be fooled by South’s heart jack.

If West had started with the 8-5-3 of hearts, he would have led the three: low from length in partner’s suit when the opening leader has not raised that suit. So East cashes his heart ace.

What next, though?

It looks obvious to play another high heart, hoping to promote a trump trick for West.

But if South is on the ball, he ruffs with his spade ace and immediately cashes three club tricks, discarding his diamond on the last round. He loses only two hearts and one spade.

Cash all of your side-suit tricks before trying for a trump promotion.

East must take the diamond ace before leading the third heart. Then East trusts West to say, “Well defended, partner.”

ORDINANCE NO. 2015-03 AN ORDINANCE providing for, and approving the budget for the calendar year 2016 * * * WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees (the “Board of Trustees”) of the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District (the “District”) has determined that, in connection with the operation of its water supply, wastewater and stormwater facilities (the “Systems”), it is necessary and in the best interests of the District to establish a budget with respect to the operation and maintenance of the Systems and related items for the year 2016; and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees reviewed and approved the proposed 2016 budget in the form attached hereto as Exhibit “A” (the “Budget”), which Budget estimates the revenues and expenses of the District for the calendar year 2016.

NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District, Kane County, Illinois, as follows: Section 1. Incorporation of Preambles. The Board of Trustees hereby finds that all of the recitals contained in the preambles to this Ordinance are true and correct and do hereby incorporate them into this Ordinance by this reference.

Section 2. Determination to Adopt Budget for 2016. It is necessary and in the best interests of the District, that the District adopt the attached Budget covering projected revenues, costs, expenses and capital expenditures, including operating and maintenance costs. The Budget contains an estimate of the revenues and expenses of the District for the calendar year 2016. Such Budget for 2016 is hereby approved and shall constitute the budget for the District for said year. The sums set forth in the Budget are hereby appropriated and budgeted for the corporate purposes of the District for the calendar year 2016.

Section 3. 2016 Budget Items. The Budget for 2016 has been prepared in conjunction with the District’s operator, and has been reviewed by the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees has provided for the collection of real estate taxes levied against all taxable property within the territorial limits of the District in an amount set forth in the Budget and shall take such action as necessary to implement such tax levy. The District is authorized to make such payments or reimbursements or take such other action as is generally contemplated by the Budget without further action of or by the Board of Trustees.

It is expressly and specifically agreed that the Trustees of the District shall have authority (and are hereby granted such authority) to sign checks or take other appropriate action to make payments, disbursements, or reimbursements of expenses in substantial accordance with the Budget. Any and all excess revenues or any savings in Budget items may be expended in making up any insufficiency in any other item or items in the Budget and for the general corporate purposes of the District.

Section 4. Severability. If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity of such section, paragraph, clause or provisions shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

Section 5. Repealer. All ordinances, resolutions or orders, or parts thereof, in conflict with the provision of this Ordinance are to the extent of such conflict hereby repealed.
