No Royal Fox, Hawk layoffs, only change in management

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Despite reports that Royal Fox and Royal Hawk country clubs in the St. Charles area have announced permanent layoffs of 134 employees, effective Jan. 1, the golf courses’ owner said he is just changing management companies.

“We are just changing management companies,” said John Weiss of St. Charles, owner of the Royal Golf Group, which includes four golf courses. “We will release information in the next couple of days about our new management. Nobody is losing their job.”

Although the management company at Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles announced a permanent layoff of 81 employees, golf course owner John Weiss said no one is being laid off – he’s just changing management companies.

tober. ClubCorp is based in Dallas, Weiss said.

ClubCorp owns or manages 160 golf courses in 25 states, which was a sticking point.

Weiss said he did not want a management company that also owns golf courses to run the Royal Golf Group’s courses.

“We’re moving to a company that totally manages, not owns and manages,” Weiss said.

The management company reported the layoffs to the Illinois Department of Labor as per the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The law requires employers with at least 75 full-time employees to provide 60 days’ notice of pending plant closings or mass layoffs.

Lawmakers override veto on 70 mph speed limit on tollways

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Jim Oberweis said he felt good when legislation he sponsored to raise the speed limit to 70 mph on Illinois tollways returned to the House of Representatives for the second time.

The bill passed the House by a wide margin in May, he said, so it seemed likely the legislators would support it again, thus overriding Gov. Pat Quinn’s veto in August.

Oberweis’ hunch was right.

The House voted 100-11-1 on Wednesday to override the veto of Senate Bill 2015. The Senate supported the override in a 44-5-1 vote last month.

“I’m very delighted both the Illinois Senate and the Illinois House by a wide margin let the will of the people be the law of the land, even though Gov. Quinn refused to allow that by vetoing the bill,” Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, said.

In a message about his

Aug. 26 veto, Quinn noted safety concerns regarding the proposed 70 mph limit on all tollways under the jurisdiction of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.

“The convenience of increased speeds for drivers on Illinois tollways does not outweigh the safety risks to children, families and our

dedicated public servants,” Quinn said.

Oberweis has said the original 70 mph speed limit law he sponsored last year – which led to increased speed limits on rural four-lane highways – addresses that issue by providing tougher penalties for those who exceed the speed limit by more than 26 mph.

Although the new law has an immediate effective date, Oberweis cautioned drivers from driving 70 mph immediately.

“It is best to determine your speed according to the posted speed limit signs along the road on which you are driving,” he said in statement Thursday. “Tollway or

[Illinois Department of Transportation] officials must first conduct speed safety studies on toll highways to determine if 70 mph is a safe maximum speed for each particular stretch of road.”

This is the same process was used when the original 70 mph speed limit was implemented last year, he said.

COLORING THE TRI-CITIES Groups use streetlight banners to promote events

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com It’s unlikely that the general public would consider the streetlights in downtown St. Charles to be a hot commodity.

But Chris Adesso, the city’s assistant director of public works for operations, knows just how popular the structures can be with groups wanting to promote special events and activities through streetlight banners.

From about March to the start of winter, public works employees hang banners for such events as RiverFest, Scarecrow Fest and, most recently, Holiday Homecoming.

“The program’s extremely popular,” Adesso said.

Adding color to downtowns Streetlight banners have helped the Geneva Chamber of Commerce add color to the city since 1985, President Jean Gaines said, noting the inspiration came from Chicago’s Michigan Avenue.

Placed throughout Geneva, the 8-foot banners serve as a way to remind residents of upcoming festivals, like Swedish Days and the Christmas Walk, Gaines said.

In February, she said, the chamber puts up banners about shopping in downtown to add some color to the streets.

“This year will be the year we work with Batavia High School again to create new designs for next year,” Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Joi Cuartero said, noting the banner program operates on a two-year cycle.

She said businesses that sponsor the banners get to have their name or logo on the lower panel. On average, she said, there are enough sponsors to have 16 to 20 banners

‘A whole process’ While the popularity for the St. Charles banner program is good, Adesso said, it also has a downside in that it can be difficult for organizations to secure a spot if they are new to the program. Sometimes, he said, the calendar fills up fast.

But the St. Charles Public Library proved this year that it can be done.

Pam Salomone, the communications and marketing manager, said the library sought participation in the streetlight

banner program to help fulfill its goal of increasing its visibility in the community.

After employees brainstormed design ideas, learned what worked and didn’t work and got approval from the city, Salomone said the finished product was unveiled at a marketing meeting.

“It was really exciting when it came in,” she said, adding staff also was “really proud seeing them up down-

town.”

The community even took note, Salomone said. Patrons have mentioned the banners during visits to the library, she said, and others have emailed her about them.

Salomone described the library’s participation in St. Charles’ streetlight banner program as a learning experience, as it wasn’t as simple as deciding to have banners.

“It was a whole process to

follow,” she said.

St. Charles’ streetlight banner rules are detailed in the program’s policy, which states sponsoring entities or the event must be within the city limits; banners must be about 24 inches wide by 94.5 inches tall; and St. Charles charges $55 a banner, although fees are waived for certain groups, such as governmental entities.

Adesso said the fees help offset the costs incurred by the city.

“It does take a significant amount of time to install all the banners on Main Street,” he said, estimating it takes 30 to 40 minutes a banner when considering the entire process, including traffic control and removing banners.

By early Thursday afternoon, Elgin Community College President David Sam – who was at the White House for the College Opportunity Summit – was looking forward to hearing First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden speak.

He already had heard from other U.S. leaders – including President Barack Obama – whose remarks validated the college’s Alliance for College Readiness program, Sam said.

“We are on the right track,” he said. “We’ve been doing this for a long time.”

The summit focused on improving degree completion, sustaining community collaborations that encourage college-going, training high school counselors as part of the first lady’s Reach Higher initiative and producing more STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – graduates with diverse backgrounds, according to the White House Blog.

Sealy Mattress to close in Batavia; 174 workers to be laid off

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Sealy Mattress, 1030 E. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, announced it will close and lay off 174 workers next year.

A company spokesman for Tempur-Sealy did not return voice mail or email messages seeking comment.

Tempur-Pedic acquired Sealy last year, prompting a name change.

Tony Cantone, business manager for the Laborers International Local 225, which represents 150 of the Sealy employees at the Batavia facility, said the closure is the result of the company’s decision to relocate to the suburbs of Indianapolis.

“They are consolidating a bunch of plants into one main facility where they will have all the products available to them,” Cantone said.

“They would be closer to the resources of fabrics and steel.

Logically, it would be easier to assemble everything there and disperse it throughout the Midwest.”

Cantone said Tempur-Sealy would be consoli-

dating several plants throughout the country.

“They would be giving up 200,000 square feet here for over 600,000 square feet there,” Cantone said. “It’s just a numbers thing. They’re only looking at costs. The Batavia plant has excelled and met or exceeded their standards of quality and service. They have won several awards.”

Cantone said the Batavia Sealy first opened in DeKalb about 25 years ago, moved once, then relocated a second time to Batavia, where it has been for about 20 years.

“We are sad to see it go,” Cantone said. “We are sad to see our members being displaced.”

The remaining employees are drivers belonging to Teamsters Local 330, but no one was immediately available to comment.

Tempur-Sealy reported the layoffs to the Illinois Department of Labor as per the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The law requires employers with at least 75 full-time employees to provide 60 days’ notice of pending plant closings or mass layoffs.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Police Department is warning the public about recent scam attempts involving callers who claim to be with the Internal Revenue Service, according to a news released issued Thursday.

North Aurora police in November received seven re-

ports of a scam, in which the caller contacted residents, claimed to work for the IRS and told them they must pay large sums of money or they would be arrested, according to the release.

Six people did not send any money to the scammers, but the seventh person, a 23-yearold woman, was conned out of nearly $1,000, the release states.

The woman on Nov. 29 received a call from a man claiming to be with the IRS who said if she did not send $1,200 right away for back taxes, she would be arrested. The woman bought pre-paid debit cards, loaded $970 on them, and gave the male the claim numbers, according to the release.

In addition, one resident in late August receiving multi-

ple phone calls from unknown males claiming to be with the federal government, either the IRS, the FBI or a local police agency, including the North Aurora Police Department, claiming her husband had been defrauding the government or owed back taxes and there was an arrest warrant for both of them, the release states. Sheila worked for many years and retired from Western Electric/ AT&T. Sheila was a loving and caring Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Friend, and an awesome Mother-in-Law. Sheila was an avid reader often following the writings of author

Tom Clancy. She also enjoyed the music of the Beatles and spent many hours in her retirement years mastering video games, asked one time why she enjoyed the video games so much, her response was “I am reliving my younger years, and I am having fun!”. Sheila reveled in being a Mother and Grandmother, her life revolved around her children, grand children and most recently some “great grand babies”. Each one held a very special place in her heart, we are all better people from the love Sheila showered on all of us.

Sheila cherished her Irish Catholic upbringing and carried it with her through out her life. She instilled those beliefs and values into the lives of her children. She brought much happiness to her family and friends. Sheila lived life to the fullest up until her illness robbed her of her ability to “Get up and go”. She taught many valuable life lessons to all of us that we will carry through out our lives. Thanks Mom/Granny, our hearts will have an empty spot for you, you will be loved and missed by so many.

She is survived by 4 children, daughter, Julianne Frerichs of Wheaton, Illinois; and sons, Joe (Donna) of Glendale Heights, Owen of St. Charles, and Clayton (Kelly Vogel) of Hilltop, AL; sisters, Lucille (the late Ron) O’Connell of Schaumburg, and Jeri (Don) Miles of WI. History Museum hosts Giving Trees for 14 nonprofit groups

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – One tree was built out of old Girl Scout cookie boxes to support Geneva Girl Scouts. Ecker Center for Mental Health created a tree that looks like a mannequin, and Lazarus House’s tree is full of red hearts.

They are among 14 nonprofit groups that created Giving Trees to be displayed at the Geneva History Museum to promote their fundraising efforts. This is the

seventh year the museum has hosted giving trees to support local charities, administrative assistant Vanessa Quillinan said.

People can vote for their favorite tree with tickets bought for $1 each at the museum, or online through the website www.genevahistorymuseum.org, Quillinan said.

“There are pictures of the trees online,” Quillinan said.

The organization that gets the most votes gets to keep all of the funds pledged through supporting their tree. The re-

maining organizations split the winnings with the museum.

Voting continues through Dec. 23.

Universities accommodate binge-drinking atmospheres THE WASHINGTON POST

The gift of periodical adjustments With 20 shopping days until Christmas, it’s not too late to send a magazine gift subscription to that annoying relative or sometimes friend.

Periodicals are relatively cheap (compared to a Coach purse, say), and you don’t have to leave your laptop to appease the person who sent you 20 pounds of grapefruit you can’t eat because you’re on statins.

I do have one issue (no pun intended) with magazines, however: Their misleading titles. Grabbing this month’s Cooking Light from our mailbox, I wondered how much caffeinated, round-table brainstorming went into creating their seductive olive oil-not-butter-or-margarine title.

Does, in fact, my wife, Tia, cook light? Yes. She’ll turn those Photoshopped recipes into scrumptious renderings. However, she also will add a spoonful of sugar to make the sucrose-free medicine go down, or a dollop of extra heavy whipped cream to embolden fat-free milk.

Moreover, before and after our light repast, we’ll put salty, cholesterol-rich brick cheese slices on warm, yummy, waist-expanding French bread. Afterward, we’ll dessert on pie or cupcakes worthy of Santa’s trans-fat naughty list.

On Nov. 22, the University of Virginia hosted its last home football game of the season or, as it has come to be known, “the fourth-year fifth.” It is a reference to the long-standing practice of seniors consuming a fifth of liquor by the game’s kickoff. The game was played on the same weekend that an explosive article about an alleged rape roiled the Charlottesville campus – a fitting coincidence that underscored the troubling nexus between alcohol abuse and sexual assault.

The scrutiny now focused on U-Va. and how it deals with sexual assaults should force it – as well as other universities – to give new attention to the equally pernicious problem of college drinking.

“We know that about half of our entering class already drinks when they arrive in Charlottesville,” U-Va. President Teresa Sullivan said Monday in a statement read to students, which acknowledged that “binge drinking is a problem for us.” She promised a re-examination of policies regarding alcohol use as part of the school’s response to the Rolling Stone article, which depicted the school as so protective of its reputation that it is indifferent to sexual assaults. Alcohol, as Sullivan made clear Monday, does not cause rape, but it’s estimated that most campus sexual assaults occur when the victim is incapacitated because of alcohol or drinks that have been drugged.

Drinking has become an accepted part of the college culture, and colleges often look the other way, fooling themselves that educating students about alcohol abuse rather than cracking down on it will change behavior.

By no means is the problem simple or are the solutions easy. That half of U-Va.’s freshman class is accustomed to drinking suggests a larger societal issue.

But if universities are serious about sending the message that drunken parties and the hazing and sexual abuse that often accompany them won’t be tolerated, they need to match words with real actions.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

With North hosting a big band concert elsewhere on campus, the public address system starred more than usual, playing both the North fight song and national anthem, among other familiar

tunes. At first, the selection that accompanied the introduction of Geneva’s starting lineup – the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” prompted some pondering.

Which team was being warned to take refuge from the other?

After a few minutes, an alternate answer emerged. The Vikings and North Stars were giving fans a heads-up about a flurry of turnovers. To be sure, they pockmarked the first quarter-plus while inspiring a snarky message from a resourceful member of Geneva’s Blue Crue fan section.

BATAVIA – Batavia girls basketball coach Kevin Jensen is realistic in acknowledging his team likely will be facing a talent deficit semi-frequently this season.

His prescription for overcoming that is relentless effort, and the Bulldogs delivered enough of that Thursday to blow past West Chicago for a 55-29 Upstate Eight Conference River win.

“We’ll have some matchups where I think we’re going to be more athletic than opponents, and we’re going to have other matchups that maybe somebody has some more talent 1 through whatever, and that’s going to be the remedy, is playing incredibly hard,” Jensen said. “And we have a lot of girls where if somebody might have basketball skill a little bit more, they’re going to match it because of their intensity, their defense, just their tenacity.”

Batavia junior forward Hannah Frazier said the Bulldogs are clear on what their coach expects this season.

“He’s always saying, ‘Don’t take breaks!’ ” Frazier said.

“It’s great, in practice, we all live by that motto, I guess. The more we do it, the better we’ll be.”

Frazier, a 6-foot-2 post stalwart, brings plenty of ability to supplement that hustle. She scored 30 points to go with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots Thursday, marking the fourth time in seven games this season she’s reached the 30-point mark for the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-0 UEC River).

“My role has increased, and I think it’s kind of been by necessity with the seniors who graduated,” Frazier said.

The left-handed powerhouse converted all eight of her field goal attempts in the

second half.

“We’re still learning about post play a little bit and maybe not letting a post establish a position,” West Chicago coach Kim Wallner said. “But yet because she’s as big as she is, she’s hard to move.”

Frazier owned the opening quarter, scoring the Bulldogs’ first 10 points and closing the quarter with 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks as the Bulldogs led, 15-9.

Yet even with Frazier seeing limited time in the second quarter – she rested to start the quarter, then went back to the bench after her second foul at the 3:04 mark – the Bulldogs expanded their advantage over West Chicago (3-5, 0-1 UEC River) to 24-14 by halftime.

Five straight points by guard Bethany Orman and a block leading to a transition basket for Shea Bayram helped the Bulldogs close the half on the upswing. A driving basket

Orman scored 11 points for Batavia, which turns its attention to Saturday’s showdown with archrival Geneva. The Vikings have multiple quality players in the 6-foot range to throw at Frazier.

“It’s always fun to get to play against girls like that, challenge yourself,” Frazier said. “I think rebounding’s going to be really big in that game. If we can keep them off the offensive boards and get a few ourselves, that’ll be a huge game-changer.”

Jensen, meanwhile, will continue demanding the Bulldogs – who use an 11-player rotation – play with maximum hustle.

“To me, taking a break is I’m on the back side of the defense and I take a deep breath and I stand up for a second,” Jensen said. “We can’t do that.

And we had moments where we applied constant pressure [against West Chicago], and we looked very good. … And we had moments where we were just OK. The measuring stick will be by the end of the year I hope it’s 32 minutes of that pressure.”

AURORA – The Aurora Christian boys basketball team rolled past Montini on Thursday in the Burney Wilkie Tournament, topping the Broncos, 73-41.

NOTEWORTHY North still plays numbers game A handful of vacancies still exist in the St. Charles North lineup, a familiar rite of winter second-year coach Ben Hummel hopes slowly is evaporating.

North has filled 10 varsity spots this season, which is more than past winters but still shy of a full, 14-athlete complement.

“I’ve been working hard, but we’re still working on numbers,” Hummel said.

“We’re still kind of battling to build. The good thing is I have some seniors this year, some leadership. But the main struggle is still getting the numbers.

Honestly, I just think it’s going to take some time and just getting some building going.”

North’s seniors include Conrad Noverini (132 pounds), Steve Collins (138) and Ethan Fredericks (170).

None was a sectional qualifier last season – returning 106-pound sophomore Kolbe O’Brien was the lone North Star to hold that distinction – but Hummel was impressed by the way his

“Numbers are small, but its a good group of kids. Hard-working kids,” Hummel said. “I’m hoping, especially for the senior group this year, to see a lot of growth and success.”

Cadets eye next breakthrough Marmion junior Riley DeMoss was nationally ranked by USA Wrestling as a grade-schooler.

He won a regional title at 152 pounds as a freshman and was primed to join the Cadets’ usual haul of state qualifiers as a sophomore after narrowly missing the state cut the season before. But an early season hip injury eventually ended DeMoss’ campaign.

With his mindset readjusted, DeMoss now takes aim at 170 pounds.

“He’s going to be tough this year, and he looks healthy, finally, and he’s ready to go,” Cadets co-coach Donny Reynolds said. “He looks like he’s finally ready to

step into a leadership role, and I think he’ll do well this year.”

The Cadets return a number of lineup staples in addition to DeMoss, enticing Reynolds and co-coach Ryan Cumbee, whose wife recently had a child, adding to the couple’s young family.

“He felt like it was more fair if we ran it with the idea of being co-head coaches,” Reynolds said. “So, so far, so good.”

Marmion, a darling of Class 3A individual and team preseason polls from both the individual and team side, opened the season with its usual flair Saturday, rolling against three downstate foes in a quadrangular at Edwardsville. The Cadets defeated O’Fallon (59-6), Belleville East (69-3) and Edwarsdsville (56-10).

Their road trip continued Wednesday with a narrower score but a similar result, as the Cadets topped Rockton Hononegah, 37-27.

The Huskies trailed the Broncos, 21-10, at the half. The game and, more importantly, a fifth straight Mid-American Conference West title were in jeopardy.

However, NIU did what it seemingly always does in those situations throughout its recent run – the Huskies stood their ground and earned yet another victory and another division championship.

After the game, Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck, a former NIU player and coach, said it best.

“They know how to win.

They know how to win, and that’s a program that I remember when I first got there, we were on a 27-game losing streak and at one point when Joe Novak left they were 2-10 and needed to get back into winning ways and learn how to win again,” Fleck said. “Jerry Kill instilled that and obviously Dave Doeren and Rod (Carey) have done a tremendous job of keeping that going. The ending scenario has been the same these past five years – with NIU in the MAC championship game.

You look at success we’ve had in years’ past, we get down in games, it’s our nature,” NIU senior safety Dechane Durante said. “We don’t look to lose. For seniors such as Durante, the thought process has been that way from Day 1.

“I was blessed to be on a winning team (in 2010). The next season we were still winning,” Durante said. “It’s just been a nature for our team.

We don’t like to lose games, we know we’ve got to fight until the end to keep winning.”

NIU won at least 11 games in every year from 2010 to 2013, and a win Friday would give NIU win No. 11 in 2014. For senior offensive tackle Tyler Loos, it’s actually his first time making the trip to Detroit as he dealt with injuries the past three seasons.

A win over the Falcons, who upset the Huskies in last year’s title game and cost NIU a BCS berth, would give NIU’s senior class its third MAC championship.

“The group has been through a lot and they’re bonding, and you can see that on how they go about things dayto-day,” Carey said. “I think that, as much as they feel they owe this university for giving them an opportunity, which is a lot, I think that myself and our staff owe them an equal amount for what they’re sacrificing and what they’ve done.

Hawks can count on Raanta

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Twice in the first seven minutes of Antti Raanta’s first NHL game in six weeks, the St. Louis Blues rang shots off the post behind him.

“Ah, of course, the best friend,” Raanta said afterward. “It’s good to get that guy into the game.”

Nothing seems to faze Raanta, the Blackhawks’ happygo-lucky backup goaltender.

When he came up from Rockford last season, he stepped right into the top job when Corey Crawford was hurt and was named the league’s rookie of the month. When he made his season debut in October after waiting more than six months between starts, he shut out the Philadelphia Flyers in a stellar 32-save effort.

And after his latest gap between starts – prolonged by Crawford’s hot play and his own ill-timed illness – Raanta made 40 stops Wednesday in a 4-1 win over the rival Blues, becoming the first Hawks goalie to allow just one goal and make 40 saves since Craig Anderson in 2004.

“That’s the job description for that goaltender,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “It’s a

tough job. Sometimes you’re sitting there for a month, and all of a sudden you’re pressed into a big game. You’ve got to take advantage of the opportunity.”

Raanta, again, did just that. The post bailed him out a couple of times early, but he quickly found his groove.

“Every time you go to the net, you [worry] about how everything is going to go,” Raanta admitted. “I felt really good, and hopefully there are lots more games to go.”

There will be. With Crawford in a walking boot and expected to miss two or three weeks after injuring himself at a concert on Monday night, Raanta will go from not playing at all to playing nearly every night, including today against Montreal, with Scott Darling likely getting a start here and there. The last time this happened, a little more than a year ago, Raanta admitted to being nervous, joking that he had a nightmare in which he looked up at the

scoreboard in Dallas at the start of the game and he was already down, 3-0.

This year, he’s more mentally prepared to assume the top job.

“Now, it’s a little bit different,” he said. “You learn something different about yourself.”

Raanta’s two big starts off lengthy layoffs are particularly encouraging given how much he struggled last spring in a similar role. He admitted he’s had to fight off boredom a bit coming to the rink each day, knowing the routine was always the same – a lengthy practice with goaltender coach Jimmy Waite while Crawford skated 20 or 30 minutes and headed off the ice to prepare for the game.

But Raanta credited those practices with keeping him ready – just in case a situation like this one arose.

“Of course, it’s fun to come off the ice after 20 minutes sometimes,” he said with a smile. “But I don’t mind the extra work. It’s always good for yourself.”

Even bigger picture, through the first 19 games, Gasol was averaging 19.9 points and 11.4 rebounds a game. The last time he was scoring at that rate was in the 2006-07 season in Memphis (20.8), and the last time he owned the glass with such consistency in the NBA was never. The 11.4 boards would be a career-best if it holds up.

Soft?

“I don’t know what reputation that is,” Gasol said, when asked about the perceptions that grew in Los Angeles over the years. “I’d like to think my reputation is about being a professional, about just being a great addition to any team I’m a part of, and being a champion.

If that’s the reputation people talk about, it’s pretty accurate.

“If it’s other things, you know the last couple of years in L.A. have been difficult from many aspects. But I think I was still able to put myself beyond that or above that and still do my job, still give everything I had every time I put that jersey on.”

And while he still considers Bryant a friend and is thankful in winning two rings with the Lakers, he’s thrilled to be elsewhere.

“It was emotionally draining,” Gasol said of his final years in Los Angeles. “It was hard on me especially after all the great times and great teams we had, and I just needed to be in a different position. To be refreshed, to be motivated again.

Put myself in the best position possible. And I felt this is it.”

No one with the Bulls is arguing that.

“When he speaks, guys listen.” guard Kirk Hinrich said of Gasol. “It’s invaluable to have him on this team. He’s always talking to us. It seems like every time he talks, he hits the nail on the head. It’s great to have a guy like that.”

Google isn’t exactly Pau Gasol’s best friend.

It definitely doesn’t paint the 7-foot Bulls center in the best light.

Numerous stories about a “soft” reputation, sources within the Los Angeles Lakers questioning his ability to play through injury, and of course all kinds of rumors about the love-hate relationship with former teammate Kobe Bryant.

Good thing for Gasol that Tom Thibodeau isn’t exactly the Google type.

“Big play Pau Gasol after big play, you can’t say enough about him,” the Bulls coach said.

“He’s been knocked in the past. Pau has great toughness, and that’s what I love about him. The mental toughness is what’s huge for our team.”

And that was on full display Tuesday night.

After a bad home loss to the Mavericks in double-overtime, Gasol got word to all of his teammates, stressing the importance of the Wednesday game in Charlotte. That’s right, a Dec. 3 road game against a team that had nine straight losses, suddenly defining a roster.

“The message was just it was a big game, it was an important game,” Gasol said.

“These type of games really make a big difference at the end of the season on your record. And it’s a game that you can come here with low energy trying to cruise through it, and then get out of here with another loss after the tough one we had [Tuesday] night, so this type of game really builds character of a team and shows what you’re made of.”

It definitely showed what Gasol was made of.

After clocking in 50 minutes against the Mavericks, it was 36 minutes in the win over the Hornets, as well as 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Affordable shopping tips for the holiday season Most of us are already preparing for those traditional holiday activities that take time, money or special assistance.

As usual, we got out the well-worn artificial tree on the day after Thanksgiving. Yes, it is still in the box – another tradition. We could be hanging the stockings with care, but they are packed in with the ornaments, which are next in line to be unpacked.

How many days ’til Christmas?

Another tradition is getting closer to the specified date.

My church ladies group, Sarah Circle, is for those who are not young but not to be considered old. Our tradition is a gift exchange – $5 limit. Try to find something funny, admirable, off-thewall, under-the-radar or just plain different.

Last year, I scored with the recipient who drew my selected delight from Graham’s Chocolate in Geneva.

I’ll soon be sending Mister Z to scout the following (with an eye to get

Try first at Tom Stopka’s Trellis Store on Kirk Road. Maybe he has some bird seed in small quantities or surely some needed item for birds, squirrels and other outside friends.

The indoor farmers market at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles promises some interesting treats and crafts, and smile and say, “Cheese,” when you greet Rob Murphy and his products.

For history buffs, I’ll bet there would be something just right at the historical center up on East Main

Street in the former Texaco station.

While you are there perhaps you could make a donation?

Another “historic” item: Take a picture of the gas price on the day you shop. Put your $5 in an envelope and say, “Keep the change!”

Sometimes I think about yesteryears and how easy it was to park and shop on Main Street. Actually, in my dreams, I am walking.

There’s Gartner’s on the Second Street corner. Pick up some bakery goods, a movie magazine or sheet music.

More grocery stores – so many it’s hard to count. Start with chain stores Kroger’s, A & P and National.

Lots of $5 items at Haskin and Debate’s, Anderson’s, Blue Goose, Tony’s Polly’s, Zedonis’s and Guth’s – Oh, just pick one that’s left!

Each class was challenged to collectively donate the largest amount of gently used winter clothing. When the drive closed on Oct. 31, the sophomore class hauled in more than 700 pounds of coats, hats and gloves, putting a dent in the total, which equaled more than one ton.

Treatment for leg and ankle swelling depends on its cause Dear Doctor K: Why are my legs and ankles swollen? What can I do about it?

Dear Reader: In yesterday’s column, I answered the first part of your question. I explained the different causes of leg and ankle swelling (edema) – some not serious, and others very serious.

Today I’ll explain what your doctor needs to do to diagnose the cause of the edema, and what you and your doctor can do to reduce the swelling.

Among the serious causes of leg and ankle swelling are diseases of the heart, lungs, liver, kidney and thyroid. If your symptoms and physical examination suggest the possibility of any of these conditions, your doctor will order various diagnostic tests.

• Blood tests can help diagnose heart failure, severe lung disease, kidney disease, low protein levels in the blood and underactive thyroid – all causes of leg and ankle swelling.

• Urine tests can help diagnose kidney disease.

• A chest X-ray can help diagnose both heart disease and lung disease.

• An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) can also help diagnose heart, lung and kidney disease.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The treatments for leg and ankle swelling depend on the cause. For most causes, you can take several steps that will help greatly: • Reduce your salt intake. Extra salt in your diet tends to hold water inside your body. Particularly if you are diagnosed with heart, lung or kidney disease, avoiding salt is very important – and entirely in your control.

• Avoid drinking too much fluid. Normally it’s healthy for men to drink 13 cups of water-containing beverages per day, and women 9 cups. (That is, it’s healthy depending on what the “water-containing beverage” is.) However, if you have leg and ankle swelling, cut back from that number. But don’t forget about reducing salt: It is more important in reducing swelling than cutting back on fluid.

• Elevate your legs. Almost regardless of what’s causing your leg and ankle swelling, elevating your legs will help because it offsets the downward tug of gravity.

That tug is keeping water in the

blood and in the space between your cells from returning to your heart. (But if you are short of breath at rest, and elevating your legs makes that worse, don’t elevate them – and talk to your doctor.)

• If you’re pregnant, avoid lying on your back, as that causes the baby and uterus to press down on the veins from your legs, which makes it harder for water in the legs to return to the heart.

• Compression stockings can help reduce leg and ankle swelling, particularly if your swelling is caused by disease of the veins in your legs.

• Diuretic pills (“water pills”) help the kidneys eliminate extra water.

No matter the cause, protect any area affected by edema from pressure, injury and extreme temperatures. The skin over swollen legs becomes more fragile over time. Cuts, scrapes and burns in areas that have edema take much longer to heal and are more likely to get infected.

Teen’s friend embarrassed by parents’ constant arguing Dr. Wallace: My best friend and I spend a lot of free time together.

We really like each other. We get together on most weekends, sometimes at my house and sometimes at her house. It worked out really well until last month. Her mother doesn’t work and her dad recently lost his job, so he is now at home all the time.

Once in a while, my parents argue, but her parents are arguing almost all the time. Sometimes my friend gets really embarrassed because they swear a lot, but she can’t do anything to make them get along better.

I would rather have my friend come to my house every weekend, but my mom doesn’t think that’s fair. This does not justify a husband and wife yelling and using bad language, but you should understand that their unacceptable behavior is caused by their difficult situation.

Tell Mom that you wrote to me for advice and that I encourage her to allow your friend and you to enjoy your free time together in a stressfree home (yours) until her parents solve their problems.

Dr. Wallace: I’m responding to the letter from the young drummer who was catching flack for practicing in his garage and making a lot of “racket” as his

And she told him the neighbors didn’t like it, either.

I want this young drummer to know that even the professional drummers don’t always practice on their drums. Instead, they use a set of pads that can simulate an entire drum set. When used properly, they can hardly be heard in an adjacent room.

The drummer can add a pedal and cymbals, but the cymbals should be wrapped in tape to deaden the noise. Several different companies sell these pads and advertise them in the International Musician’s newspaper and other musical publications.

When South shows four-plus hearts, North adds two points for his singleton, which makes his hand worth 17 support points. That is a maximum for a three-heart raise. (If you count losers, which I prefer, that North hand has only five: two spades, one heart, one diamond and one club. That makes his hand strong enough for a game raise. But it is close with only 15 high-card points.)

When the dummy comes down, pause, relax and start by counting losers. Here, you have five: two spades, one diamond and two clubs. Then move to winners.

There are six top tricks: one spade, four hearts and one club. A seventh can come from diamonds. But to get up to 10, you must take seven trump tricks, not four. That means ruffing three clubs in the dummy.

However, you must establish your diamond trick first.

So, win trick one with your club ace and play your diamond to dummy’s queen. East will win with his ace and shift to a trump. What now?

You must be careful with your entries for those club ruffs. Take this trick with your heart ace, ruff a club in the dummy, cash the spade ace and diamond king, then crossruff in the minors.

You take one spade, two hearts, one diamond, one club, two diamond ruffs in your hand and three club ruffs on the board.

Yes, an initial trump lead defeats the contract. But that is tough to find.
