I had the opportunity last week to join several employees and volunteers at the Garfield Farm Museum in Campton Hills as they ran their regular

errands and did their daily chores.

Geneva. What will you be doing for that? We will be drinking chocolate, which is sort of the espresso of hot chocolate. It’s basically just melted chocolate with a little bit of milk. We are giving that away for free, one-ounce shots of drinking chocolate.

Are you excited about the Christmas Walk? We did the same thing last year, and it was one of the most fun nights and one of the busiest nights that we’ve had. It was a whole lot of fun.

County judges school St. Charles students in digital safety On the Web

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Thompson Middle School students on Thursday faced a projected image of a criminal complaint that outlined a charge of harassment through the use of Facebook and a Samsung tablet.

Indicating the document represented a real case in Kane County, Judges Clint Hull and Susan Clancy Boles asked the students to picture who might be brought to court on such a charge.

Boles indicated it was a young person.

“It could be any one of you,” she said, stressing the seriousness of certain digital actions.

The judges spoke to the St. Charles School District 303 students in a continued effort to prevent them from using technology – such as apps, texting and social media – in a way that could land them in trouble with the law.

“We don’t ever want to see you,” Hull said.

The judges warned the students that what can take seconds to create and disseminate – such as text messages and photos – can have lasting effects, even when using apps that are designed to make posts temporary, such as Snapchat.

“Snapchat doesn’t fade away into obscurity,” Hull said.

He also cautioned the students about believing they can stay a step ahead of the authorities by using new apps or technology to avoid detection. Police departments have dedicated cyber investigators,

he said.

The judges took several questions from students after explaining that, in certain situations, people can be charged with possession of child pornography even if they received nude or partially nude images unsolicited. A time element is involved in

the decision to issue charges, the judges said. They said cyber investigators can determine whether recipients of such images took appropriate action immediately after discovering the photographs.

Fines and supervision are among the potential consequences of a criminal charge, the judges said.

Boles, who has had a child as young as 10 in her courtroom, said she and Hull are big proponents of ordering offenders to community service because it is “very effective.”

They told the students the community service might very well interfere with their after-school activities, and lobbying from parents won’t change the court order.

“That’s too bad,” Boles said.

Geneva, Batavia to end electronic recycling drop-offs Dec. 15

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva’s and Batavia’s public works departments no longer will host an electronic recycling site for the Kane County after Dec. 15, officials said.

Instead, electronics can continue to be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Monday through Friday at St. Charles Public Works, 1405 S. Seventh Ave. Electronics also can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and noon Dec. 12 at the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

The county’s monthly collection is on the second Saturday of each month, from April through November, Kane County recycling program coordinator Jennifer Jarland said. It will stop for a winter break, then begin again in April.

State law prohibits disposing of computer monitors, printers and TVs in landfills. The closing of Geneva and Batavia’s electronics drop-off sites occurred because of changes the county’s recycling vendor made, she said.

The electronics recycler developed a different, more efficient method that the St.

Charles and West Dundee drop-off locations have converted to, Jarland said. Previously, people were supposed to put recycling into a large container called a roll-off, but instead they were leaving things piled up in front of the container, Jarland said.

Now people can drop off large items, such as TVs, on pallets that can be picked up with a forklift and double-stacked into a trailer, Jarland said.

The smaller electronics go into very large cardboard boxes that are also lifted and stacked into the trailer, she said.

“They are both doing the new model, which we needed to do because of the volume,” Jarland said. “It’s very successful and 10 times easier than picking up everything off the ground.”

Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm said the city initiated the idea of not accepting electronics dropoffs anymore in October because of liability concerns for employee injuries and the amount of man-hours involved.

Holm said Batavia’s website, www.cityofbatavia.net, will reflect the change after a final Batavia City Council report next week.

‘IT DOESN’T GET EASIER’

Those who have suffered loss sometimes struggle with the holiday season

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Five years after her death at age 15, Quincee Miller remains part of her family’s holiday events. Her mother, Batavia resident Blythe Miller, said during every holiday gathering, her daughter’s picture is put on a table.

“We light a candle,” Blythe Miller said. “That’s our moment for her. That way, we can acknowledge her and give her a moment. You’re with us. We’re remembering you.”

Experts said for many who have suffered through the loss of a loved one, any festive gathering can be difficult, and because the Christmas season lasts several weeks, it especially can be tough. Even years later, they might not want to celebrate, and it could lead to sadness. Several local organizations offer counseling and programs to help people in the situation, including Elburn-based Conley Outreach Community Services and Geneva-based Fox Valley Hands of Hope.

Blythe Miller lost her daughter to suicide. Another Batavia resident, Tom Fink, lost his son, Robert, to cancer in 2004, when Robert Fink was 12 years old.

Tom Fink said the first year of holidays after his son’s death was hard. The second year was worse, and no year has been easy.

“The part that really hits a lot of people is the second year,” he said. “Your mind realizes that, whoa! They are really not going to be here anymore, forever. … This is your new mode

of life.”

The event is being offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 15

at Fox Valley Hands of Hope, 200 Whitfield Drive, Geneva.

It is free, but registration is required in advance by calling 630-232-2233.

Christy Pitol from Hands of Hope said it is for those who have suffered any loss.

“Any kind of loss has its own language,” she said, adding those who have lost loved

ones can feel sadness triggered by “any kind of celebratory, momentous occasion.”

The goal is that participants will gain coping skills for the holiday season and ideas for incorporating the memory of the loved one into holiday traditions. The evening will close with a short candlelight remembrance ser-

vice.

“Christmas and Thanksgiving are about togetherness ... ,” she said, adding, “People get anxious about the anticipation of a special event.”

She said there also will be an opportunity to focus on the period after the holidays, which she said can be difficult for people, as well.

Our volunteers are well-trained, and they try to make people welcome.” Both organizations offer ongoing programs, as well.

“It takes a tremendous amount of energy to make the decision to join a group, to go to a counselor,” Hanson said.

“The grieving takes a tremendous amount of energy. You are already sapped.”

They both said the decision to seek counseling was not immediate. Both said once they did start counseling, they found it was helpful to be around others who have suffered similar losses.

“When everything first happened, I was clueless,” Blythe Miller said. “I read every book I could possibly read about everything. … And I’m not a reader, but I became one real quick.”

Tom Fink, who said he has an engineering background, said his first thought was “There has got to be a way to fix this.”

“There really isn’t,” he said.

Judy Hanson, a contractual therapist with Conley, specializes in grief and loss. She also has experienced loss, as her father died unexpectedly when she was 7 years old. She said that when she was younger, the situation was different, adding, “People didn’t discuss grief then. … It’s not like now, where people are really trying to make our society realize that death is not an option. It happens. It makes sense to support people so they don’t have to suffer even more than they are already suffering.”

Mild December, average winter expected for Tri-Cities

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com If forecasts hold, the Tri-Cities are in for an average winter that won’t outstay its welcome, a meteorologist with The Weather Network said.

The Weather Network this week released its winter forecast, which covers December, January and February.

The long-range forecast has two focuses – temperature and precipitation – and how they compare to the average, meteorologist Michael Carter said.

The Weather Network is forecasting a mild December for the area, but that doesn’t rule out the potential for storms, he said.

“You can still have these snowfall events even if you have an overall warm month,” he said.

Snowfall, meanwhile, will likely measure below an average year, Carter said. Using numbers from Elgin, he said the area’s average snowfall is 9.2 inches in December and January, about 6.5 inches in February and 3 inches in March.

Carter said the weather patterns will be influenced

by El Niño, which generally

leads to mild, dry winters in the northern U.S. and cool, wet conditions in the southern states.

This year’s El Niño should rival some of the strongest, which include those in 1982-83 and 1997-98, he said.

“We are talking a very strong El Niño event,” he said.

While the other two El Niños continued to strengthen through December and January and peaked in January, Carter said, this one is probably at or near its peak.

That early weakening will allow for the return of arctic air masses and cold outbreaks, he said.

Although El Niño years don’t have a reputation for early springs, the conditions of this El Niño should allow spring to arrive on time, Carter said. “[We’re] not expecting winter to outstay its welcome,” he said.

OBITUARIES GERALDINE P. WEISSCHNUR

Born: April 7, 1928; in Chicago, IL Died: Dec. 2, 2015; in Winfield, IL Geraldine P. (Gerry) Weisschnur, nee DeGraw, age 87, of West Chicago, formerly of St. Charles and Sycamore, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Central Dupage Hospital in Winfield.

She was born April 7, 1928 in Chicago, the daughter of Samuel and Marion (Hunniford) DeGraw.

Geraldine lived in Chicago and as a young child the family move to St. Charles. She attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School and George E. Thompson High School, where she met her future husband, Harry W. Weisschnur, Jr., together they raised four children.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in St. Charles, and in her younger years was an active member of the Women’s Parish Club, as well as, chairing several committees including the Shamrock Shuffle and the Valentine’s Day Dance.

Gerry was a fun loving person who took deep interest in the friends she made and had great pride in her home and family.

Gerry had many life-long friends throughout the years. She particularly enjoyed spending time with her Bridge Ladies.

After 30 years in the work force, she retired from O’Brien Budd and moved to Sycamore, Illinois.

Geraldine is survived by her children, Kathleen (Paul) Bowling, of St. Charles, IL, Nancy (Paul) McCaffrey of San Diego, CA, John (Rhonda) Weisschnur of Elburn, IL, and Mary Ellen (Joe) McClain of Dousman, WI. Eight grandchildren, Teri Cuddihy, Emily Konkey, Christopher Bowling, Kelly Combs, Erin McCaffrey, Taylor, Kevin and

Brian McClain; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret (Margo) Barnhart; and her former husband, Harry W. Weisschnur Jr. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2015 at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, St. Charles.

Eleanor S. Yunker passed away peacefully at home Sunday, November 30, 2015.

Ellie was ready to go home. She told her friends at Heritage Woods that her expiration date was

quickly approaching and hoped to be home by Thanksgiving. She had done all she could to fight the leukemia.

A kind hearted person, Ellie did not want people to mourn for her.

She wanted her friends and family to see how happy she was to be going home and greatly enjoyed saying good-byes at her Celebration of Life party on October 25th.

Most of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were at the party. There were lots of hugs, kisses and smiles. She received balloons, flowers, candy, fresh bread, chips and dip and encouraging cards and got to see so many special people, including her oldest and dearest friends, Beth and Harry. The three sat together with small bowls of Ellie’s favorite potato soup and talked about her husband, Hank and the experiences the four of them shared. Ellie was ready to be reunited with all who had gone before her.

Ellie always liked to be out and about. She greeted everyone she encountered with a smile, a hug (she never shook hands), some Ellie wisdom and a piece of Dove chocolate from the stash in her pocket. Everyone loved Ellie, and her goal was to make everyone’s day a little brighter. She liked to counsel and nourish others, and she liked to do as much as she could for herself by herself.

She was thrilled when she discovered Heritage Woods Assisted Living facility and could not wait to make it her final earthly residence. She could no longer drive, but she could go out and about with her walker and then

Eleanor Syneva Spiess Grinde Yunker was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on August 25, 1926 to Walter and Hertha (Jarosch) Spiess. She was loving, giving, caring, nourishing, feisty, proud, sometimes stubborn, but always a wonderful mother to Carol (Larry) Patrick, and Linda DeGood and stepmother to the late Sharon (Yunker) Hannah.

She was “Grandma Ellie” to her grandchildren, Cheryl (Michael) Wyer, Gary (Angela) Patrick, Katie (Scott) Edwards and Brian (Jenn) Patrick; and great grandchildren, Brandon (Loren) Wyer, Brittney (Amy) Boyette, Trevor Wyer, Laura Edwards, Sean Patrick, Nicholas Edwards, Quinne Patrick and Kiernan Patrick to whom she lavished unconditional love and support.

She was also grandmother to Carron (Jason) Dunker and Brett DeGood; and great grandmother to Carson Dunker and Emily DeGood. She was “Auntie Ellie” to the Cordes girls, the late Lehlia, Kristine, Patty, Margie and the late Elizabeth.

Ellie was assisted in her journey home by a plethora of people who loved her and will miss her.

Fox River and Countryside promotes safety during holidays KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District is offering holiday fire safety tips as part of the Keep the Wreath Red program, according to a news release.

Each fire station has a wreath wrapped in red lights and will remain lit 24 hours a day during the holiday season.

For every fire caused by a holiday decoration, a red bulb will be replaced with a white bulb, the release states.

“The hope is the wreath will serve as a constant reminder to practice fire safety during the holiday season,” according to the release.

Fox River and Countryside offers these holiday tips: • Do not place trees close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks.

• Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood-burning stove. Promptly discard trees once they become

dry.

• Fresh trees should have green needles that are hard to pull back from the branches.

The trunk should be sticky.

• Inspect holiday lights annually for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, damaged sockets and excessive kinking or wear.

• Do not link more than three light strands unless directions indicate it is safe. Connect lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet.

• Decorations should be

placed away from heat vents.

• Keep exits clear of trees and other decorations.

• Avoid putting wrapping paper in fireplaces, as it can result in a very large fire that throws off dangerous sparks and embers.

• Ensure candles are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the house with candles burning.

Parolees to return to prison if agency does not get state grant

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Since 2005, deacon Rick Martin has helped hundreds of paroled prison inmates get on a path to normal society again, and he said most of them were not offenders again.

They get jobs and live in the ministry’s apartments for 30 to 90 days while they save money. They report to parole officers, attend 12-step meetings and learn how to be self-sustaining on the outside again, Martin said.

But now the housing program of RITAS Ministry – Restoring Inmates to America’s Society – is in danger of losing the Aurora apartments where inmates live temporarily while learning to reintegrate into society. And the six men who live there might have to return to prison Dec. 15, Martin said, if they can’t find other places to live.

Without a budget, the Illinois Department of Corrections cannot send its grant to the charity that supports its housing program, Martin said. And without the state’s financial support, the ministry would have to end its housing program.

“The landlord has been very good to us,” Martin said.

“But the state does not have a budget, and he’s owed about $38,000 in rent. He has not been paid since June.”

Illinois did not have a budget in place by the July 1 start of the state fiscal year. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly remain deadlocked.

“Reducing recidivism is a key element of the governor’s criminal justice reforms, but unfortunately, the Democratic majority in the Legislature passed a budget that was $5 billion out of balance,” spokeswoman Catherine Kelly wrote in an email.

Martin was chaplain of the Kane County Jail under former Sheriff Ken Ramsey.

After he became a deacon – a designation for laymen in the Roman Catholic Church who serve in worship and pastoral care – Martin and his wife, Linda, started RITAS Ministry in 1997. It helps inmates become productive citizens through counseling, referrals and supports the

Martin said 80 percent of the charity’s $300,000 budget is from a department of corrections grant, with the rest from fundraising. When prisoners are eligible for parole, they have a place to go before they are released, Martin said.

“A lot of them can’t go back home because they’ve burned too many bridges. They don’t want to go back to that neighborhood; they don’t want that lifestyle anymore,” Martin said. “I got one guy who says he’d rather go back to prison than return to the city of Chicago.”

RITAS’ housing program has served parolees from age 18 to 65 who have served two days in prison or 35 years, and who have been convicted of everything from petty theft up to murder, Martin said.

Martin said the recidivism rate for released prisoners is about 65 percent, but those who go through RITAS Ministry have a recidivism rate of 10 percent to 18 percent.

“It’s very sad for these people,” Linda Martin said. “It’s a proven program.”

In an email, a spokeswoman for the department of corrections said the average annual cost to incarcerate an offender is $23,409.

Jennifer Vollen Katz, executive director of the John Howard Association of Illinois, said no matter what the support level is for RITAS Ministry, “it will cost the state less than it what it costs to incarcerate them.”

“We are far better off with those working hard to re-enter society successfully and to

become productive tax-paying members of society, instead of

being reincarcerated,” Vollen Katz said.

Tech stress? Go where the buffalo roam If Black Friday’s crush at Menards didn’t stress you out, then Cyber Monday’s digital search-and-buys surely did. But holiday shopping burns money and patience only once a year.

Phone calls, texts, emails, Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest, etc., vie for our attention year round – and they’re wearing us down, beginning with how we talk to each other.

Today, we can kiss real communication goodbye, postulates Sherry Turkle in “Reclaiming Conversation.” On PBS’s “NewsHour,” she said a phone placed between two diners contributes to the “feeling that we all are always potentially elsewhere,” leading us away from “conversations where ... intimacy is born.”

The workplace suffers, too; “people go into work ... and they convince themselves that they’re most productive when they’re focused on their email, when really, they’re ignoring ... the meetings with colleagues, the times when really the creativity, collaboration, happens.”

Student response diminishes as well; a computer “not only takes away the attention of the person who’s on the laptop … but everyone around them.”

Researchers in Kane County’s backyard cite similar findings.

Northern Illinois University’s Larissa Barber and Alecia Santuzzi offer the phrase “workplace telepressure” to define the urge to quickly respond to digital messages whether at work or home, now the norm, not the anomaly.

Such behavior can negatively affect people’s sleep, quality of work and attention span.

Washington Post reporter Brigid Schulte addresses a larger question in “Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time.” A New Yorker review summarizes, “busyness has acquired social status. The busier you are the more important you seem; thus, people compete to be ... harried.”

Constantly buying new things, “the average consumer grows accustomed to what he has purchased and ... rapidly aspires to own the next product in line,” thereby forcing him to “continue to work long hours and to buy more stuff.”

How to escape this digital treadmill? Over Thanksgiving weekend, our family drove an hour west to the Nachusa Grasslands, low, rolling plains blending brown, gold and yellow prairie grasses and pods.

But the best sedative came when watching three buffalo so well camouflaged we almost drove by them. We got out and watched their mountainous, furry backs languidly floating in a hollow. They worked their slow magic on us, proven by the fact that none of us took out a cellphone ... until back in the car, driving home.

After all, we couldn’t live without answering the dopamine rush of a text ding forever.

Outlawing bailouts won’t make them unnecessary BLOOMBERG VIEW The Federal Reserve has adopted a rule that illustrates a fundamental contradiction in Congress’s approach to financial reform: Legislators want to outlaw bailouts, but neither they nor regulators have done enough to make bailouts unnecessary.

The rule, mandated by the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010, prevents the Fed from providing emergency loans to individual institutions.

It says any such program must apply to at least five entities, and loans must be made at a penalty rate.

The rule forbids the kind of targeted support that was offered to Bear Stearns and AIG during the 2008 crisis.

The goal is worthy.

Companies should bear responsibility for their actions, not stick taxpayers with the bill. The expectation of government support skews incentives, weakens market discipline and encourages the kind of irresponsible lending that leads to crises.

That said, curbing the Fed’s emergency powers won’t by itself end the need for bailouts. Dodd-Frank offers a substitute – the orderly liquidation authority, which purportedly allows regulators to salvage troubled institutions without tapping taxpayer funds – but it’s untested.

Even with the best system in place, unforeseen events could require the kind of fast, flexible response that only an independent cen-

tral bank can provide. For all its faults, the rescue of AIG in 2008 averted a much worse outcome.

Limiting the Fed’s freedom of action makes it all the more vital to reduce the likelihood of such emergencies. The best way is more equity capital – financing provided by investors who share in a company’s profits and losses.

Current rules require the largest U.S. banks to have only $5 in equity for each $100 in assets, enough to absorb only a 5 percent net loss. Research and experience suggest that sharply increasing capital requirements would benefit the economy by enhancing banks’ capacity to take risks. Legislation aimed at doing so has gone nowhere.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Turnovers doom STC North, Batavia takes advantage of pressure

Neither side could deny the impact of those statistics on the Bulldogs’ 55-49 victory.

Restless full-court pressure boosted Batavia (5-1, 1-0 UEC River) after the break.

It also is liable to give coach Kevin Jensen’s deepest team yet another valuable facet this season.

“It’s fun, it’s fun,” freshman guard Hailey Orman said. “A lot of energy.”

North (3-1, 0-1) led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter and appeared primed to pull away before Batavia accelerated its pressure, alternating between diamond and 2-2-1 looks.

Couple the Bulldogs’ swarming defense with slashing junior guard Kenzie Foster’s play at the other end of the floor, and Batavia trailed just 28-24 at the break. Foster had eight points at halftime, creating space on aggressive drives through the paint or down the baseline.

“Just put my head down and go in hard,” Foster said.

“Only good things can happen going in.”

Her helping hands were vital given the way the North Stars hovered about St. Louis-bound Batavia senior forward Hannah Frazier.

North’s athletic frontcourt of Anna Davern, Claire Jakaitis and Morgan Rosencrants helped limit Frazier using a 2-3 zone defense.

North’s extra attention, however, ultimately benefited Orman (15 points, including four 3-pointers). Foster and senior forward Jess Koch also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points apiece. “(Frazier) being out there is what opened things up for them, OK,” Jensen said. “And that’s kind of the difference between us this year and last year.”

Although Rosencrants (18 points, 10 rebounds) contributed a double-double and Jakaitis had 11 points, the at-

tack ultimately stalled after halftime.

“You know, we’ll move on from here,” Masoncup said.

“At times, I thought we looked very good today. I thought we looked dang good, especially in that first quarter and twothirds. And then at the end of the second quarter, all of a sudden, we started not doing what we were doing. We really need to get the ball inside, and we stopped doing that.

“When we went inside, we were very good. When we just starting panicking and not doing what we’re taught, we struggled.”

Masoncup felt North’s defense was strong on the whole, staying disciplined until the team entered must-foul mode.

When that occurred, Batavia again flourished, as Orman and older sister, senior guard Bethany, darted to corral long rebounds and keep hounding the North Stars.

“I think being put under pressure and playing with these girls, it’s helped me definitely become a better player and think faster,” Hailey Orman said.

On Thursday, her teammates knew the feeling.

Just ask St. Charles East boys bowling coach Steve Dessauer. Even after his Saints beat Geneva, 3,833-3,390, Thursday afternoon at Bowling Green Sports Center, he simply used the word “No” when asked if he knew what the team’s record was after the Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory.

It wasn’t because he doesn’t keep track. He could have easily looked up the record in little time, but it was because it doesn’t matter to him. Dessauer’s top priority with his team is to make sure it continues to take strides toward its ultimate goal.

“Each time out here is a building block toward that beginning of the season goal to make it to state,” Dessauer said. “I don’t really care about the record to be honest. We’re

doing well. We’re getting better every single match, week, practice, Saturday tournament and that’s what is most important.”

Senior Cole Cartee continued his strong form, finishing with a match-high series of 694, with a high game of 244, while Andrew Culbertson’s 679 and Dean Mudlong’s (648) paced the Saints to victory.

While those scores helped lead the Saints to another win, Mudlong, a captain of the group this year, said taking each match throw by throw is really important for the longterm mission for the Saints.

“You want to look at your score, but it’s not really about that for us,” Mudlong said.

“It’s just taking it one throw at a time and making sure to focus on what you’re doing. Each of these matches is preparation for the future for us for that end goal of going to state. It’s been working out well so far.”

After losing the second game of the day, Mudlong and the Saints turned to their mot-

to to “fight back” and did so in a clean sweep of the third game.

“That’s been our motto, our saying all season,” Mudlong said. “I think it’s important to have matches like that to force you to fight back and persevere.”

Geneva was led by senior John Zupke’s 650 series, with help from Mario Gelfuso (647) and Jordan Soto (601).

But coach Jordan Zimberoff would like to see more consistency from his group, which is shaped as a general theme among coaches building towards the postseason.

While Zimberoff did say it was “a nice consolation” to take the second game from the Saints, the mental mistakes are where the problems begin for his Vikings.

“I just think we don’t trust ourselves when we get out here,” Zimberoff said. “We execute these shots in practice, no problem, but then when we get out here we make physical mistakes that I think come from not trusting ourselves.

Fixing mistakes from last week’s Conant Invitational, the Saints put on a dominating performance Thursday night in topping Larkin, 51-9, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual.

“We worked on things this week,” Potter said. “As individuals and as a team, there were things we broke down on tape that I saw improvements on. We corrected mistakes. This is a young team. It was great to see them make changes.”

“That’s my style of wrestling,” Sommer said. “I want to wear my opponent down in the first two periods and then go into the third period and go after him.”

The Saints followed with strong performances from Malik Hatch, who earned a 7-5 victory at 170 pounds; Cody Glidewell, who pinned his opponent at 182 pounds at 1:39 of the second period despite being tied 2-2 after one period; and freshman Darrell Gregg, who earned a 6-3 victory at 195 pounds after being tied 2-2 after two periods.

It was clear the Saints built off the energy they bring with them to the bowling alley. It could have been the support of the East girls water polo team, or the constant shouting of “Si” after strikes, or “Must be the money” after threein-a-row, but nonetheless, it helped calm any nerves after dropping the second game.

“It’s pretty cool. I even had some of the Geneva guys come up to me and say ‘This is crazy’,” Cartee said of the atmosphere. “It’s hard to get down on yourself when you constantly are giving high fives, even after bad shots. It helps you gain that confidence, which we need, because come sectionals and state, your season really gets defined by a couple of Saturdays.”

Early season and conference wins are nice, but the Saints and Vikings have something to take away after Thursday toward much bigger goals ahead.

Patterson, Knights hold off Sycamore for dual win

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Overtime pins are a rare beast, given the combination of the shorter period and the fact that the two wrestlers are obviously even – at least for six minutes.

When Hayden Patterson pinned Artimus Cunningham in extra time of the first match between Kaneland and Sycamore on Thursday, it proved to be a huge difference in the Knights’ 37-36 team win over the Spartans in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East Division dual.

The Knights (3-1 overall, 1-0 NI Big 12 East) gave two forfeits to the Spartans (2-2, 0-1), who had to forfeit just one match. Sam Cottone had a chance to record a technical fall or a pin to give the Spartans the team win – and came close on a couple of occasions – but settled for the individual 6-3 win.

But the big difference maker came in the first match at 160. Cunningham got a late takedown to force overtime after playing catch-up for a good chunk of the battle, but Patter-

son ended up with the pin.

“I have to clear my mind and think about not what has happened, but what’s going to happen,” Patterson said.

“Overtime, new period, it’s a whole new match. Zero-zero.”

Cunningham beat Patterson twice last year.

“We have to win that match, not get pinned,” Sycamore coach Brian Davis said.

“That’s a huge swing. ... We don’t have enough room in our lineup to be giving up extra points. Artimus not only gets pinned and loses, but he shouldn’t have even been in that position. He should have won the match before that.”

Patterson said he was pumped for the win, and coach Joe Orosco said he was happy to see him get the win.

“Hayden has had the habit of getting in the matches of getting started in the third period,” Orosco said. “We told him he has to go get going first period, and he did a little bit of that.”

Riley Vanik (170) and Colin Gussman (182) added pins for the Knights and a 21-0 lead, but a forfeit and a pin by Joey Beaudoin cut the lead to nine.

The lead got back to 19 when Austin Kedzie got a pin for the Knights at 31-12, but Sycamore started its comeback.

Levi Peters got a pin at 120, followed by a second-period fall by Sam Knuth at 126. A second forfeit cut the margin to 31-30 with three matches left – the last of which was a forfeit by Sycamore at 152.

Sycamore’s Brian Johnston scored a third-period reverse after starting on the bottom and rode out the 2-1 win at 145, putting Cottone in the position of needing a pin against Preston Harris, or at least a technical fall, to secure the team win. Cottone came close in the first period to getting at least a near fall, if not a pin, but went out of bounds.

Cottone won 6-3 to expand the Spartans lead to 36-31, but the forfeit gave the Knights the narrow win.

“He won the match. I’m proud of heck for him winning the match,” Davis said of Cottone. “You can’t expect to come down to it for him to get a pin. You can’t put that on somebody. We should have had the dual meet won before that and we didn’t.”

USA Today High School Sports on Wednesday named St. Francis’ Peg Kopec as the 2015 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Kopec, who Peg Kopec announced her retirement shortly after the Spartans won the IHSA Class 4A state title, guided the Spartans to a 39-3 record in her 40th season. The state championship was the program’s fourth straight and 12th overall.

It was St. Francis’ first 4A crown after winning the previous three in 3A. Kopec accumulated the most victories in IHSA history and had a career record of 1,238-229-2. She coached each of the Spartans’ state champions and 19 top-three state trophy teams in all. The 2015 team swept Glenbard West, 25-15, 25-23

Some connections, however, didn’t hurt.

Bochtler actually interviewed with San Diego years ago in his initial bid to get into coaching, but the Padres were full. Padres executives recommended him to D’backs farm director Mike Bell, the son of Buddy Bell, who managed Bochtler with the Detroit Tigers in 1998.

“Mike knew me through that and offered me a job right away,” Bochtler said.

Bochtler entered the Arizona organization around the same time as Green, who was a minor league manager in the system for four seasons before serving as D’backs third-base coach in 2015.

“I think in a lot of organizations, Doug would be higher and doing more,” Mike Bell said in January, “but because we have the resources we do, we’re lucky, and Kane County is lucky to have him there working with those guys.”

Whereas Bochtler moves to San Diego to begin his major league coaching odyssey, 2015 Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek also is indebted to the city.

Grudzielanek, who managed the Cougars to the Midwest League playoffs last season, was itching to get into coaching after a lengthy playing career. With baseball’s annual winter meetings descending on his hometown

of San Diego around this time last year, Grudzielanek followed a friend’s advice.

He attended. He networked. He emerged with his first managerial job.

“I kind of felt like, ‘Hey, I don’t want to go there,’ “ Grudzielanek said. “They said, ‘Just trust me. Huskies square off against Bowling Green in MAC Championship for third straight year

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – There is a wide disparity between the statistics of the Northern Illinois and Bowling Green quarterbacks heading into the Mid-American Conference Championship.

Matt Johnson, the Falcons senior quarterback who is the conference’s offensive player of the year, has more than twice as many touchdowns this season as passing attempts by the Huskies’ starter – freshman Tommy Fiedler – when the two teams square off at 7 p.m. Friday at Ford Field in Detroit.

“Each week, you change defensively to what their strengths ... and weaknesses are,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said of handling Bowling Green’s potent offense. “These guys run and throw it really well. They do it with a little different tempo and a little different philosophy behind it, but it still comes down to if you let them run it, they’re going to run it.

If you pack the box, they’re going to throw it and it’s about as easy as that. ... Then they throw in a really good quarterback with it, you have to give them multiple looks. You

have to go ahead and be able to take away the run, harass the passer and certainly disrupt routes on the edges.”

Johnson is a major reason why Bowling Green (9-3 overall, 7-1 in MAC East) is leading the conference with 44.2 points per game. He’s completing 68.9 percent of his passes for 372.1 yards per game with 41 touchdowns and six interceptions. He leads the nation in both passing yards (4,465) and passing touchdowns.

His favorite target is Roger Lewis, who is a first team allMAC receiver with 76 receptions for 1,401 yards (116.8 per game) and 14 touchdowns.

“They have a lot of tools on offense,” Northern Illinois senior linebacker Boomer Mays said. “They have a high-tempo offense, so I feel like they’re going to come out ready to play. We just have to come out and get lined up, know what we’re doing and be ready.”

For the Huskies, who are making their sixth consecutive trip to the MAC Championship, they will be starting the left-handed Fiedler, who began the season as the fifth string before injuries thrust him into the starting spot for the most important game of the season.

Major League managers summoned right-handed reliever Doug Bochtler 220 times during a career that spanned parts of six seasons.

Bochtler threw his final big league pitch in 2000, but it turns out he hadn’t lost the eligibility to get the call.

On Wednesday, the San Diego Padres named the 2015 Cougars pitching coach as bullpen coach for new manager Andy Green, marking a

notable ascension. Bochtler spent five seasons coaching in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm system, Doug including the Bochtler past two in the Class-A Mid west League, before rejoining a Padres organization for which he made 151 appearances from 1995 to 1997.

Last season, Bochtler called himself “basically a coach in Triple-A” when his playing career concluded. In the next breath, the affable 45-year-old admitted his coaching positions weren’t born of his playing career, either.

Obviously, tensions in a relationship can affect sexual desire, but that’s not the case with you.

For some women, these steps are not enough.

These women are typically in healthy relationships, and yet they have no desire, sex drive or response to sexuality.

Women who fit these criteria are often diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).

Flibanserin is intended for this group of women.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 18, and my younger sister is 15. We share the same room, but we have separate closets. I work part time after school and all day Saturdays as a waitress at a local restaurant. Dr. Wallace: The guy I’m dating used to do hard drugs and got into real trouble. While he was in jail he started reading the Bible and as a result became a born-again Christian. Believe me when I say that he has turned his life around.

I didn’t know Phil when he was doing drugs, but, from listening to his family, I gather he was a nasty dude. He doesn’t say much about his drug days, but one night he did tell me that LSD used to be his drug of choice.

That’s all he said, and I was glad when he changed the subject, because I did not really want to hear any more.

I’ve heard about LSD, but I don’t know much about it and the effects it has on the human body.

So I would really like to know because there is the possibility that

lysergic acid diethylamide. The drug was first tested by doctors in 1943. They used it for experimental treatments on people with various mental disorders, as well as on alcoholics, epileptics and terminally ill cancer patients. These experiments were largely unsuccessful, but the drug started finding its way out of the clinics by the early 1960s and became popular among thrill-seekers.

LSD is a potent hallucinogen – a drug that causes users to see, hear, smell, or even feel things that aren’t really there. Other effects of LSD include higher blood pressure, faster heartbeat, loss of muscle control or coordination, nausea, dizziness, chills and headaches.

Because of its chemical makeup LSD may be stored in the body and unexpectedly released into the system days, weeks or even months after ingestion. “Flashbacks” have been reported to occur up to 20 months later. Simply put, LSD is plain nasty.

Dear Dr. K: I am a woman in my 30s. I love my husband, but I am just not interested in sex. Will the new female libido drug help?

Dear Reader: You’re referring to flibanserin (Addyi). This is the first medicine to be approved by the FDA for low libido (little interest in sex) in women. It is designed to help women who would like to increase their sexual desire, and it has been shown to slightly improve sexual satisfaction in some women. Flibanserin is only approved for pre-menopausal women.

So it would be appropriate for you, but not for post-menopausal women.

First, let me dispel a common misperception.

Flibanserin is not a “pink Viagra.” Viagra (sildenafil) and the several other drugs like it treat erectile dysfunction by improving blood flow to the penis.

This causes the penis to be more erect when a man has sexual desire.

But these drugs do not increase a man’s sexual desire; they help a man with the mechanics of sex, not the passion of sex.

In contrast, flibanserin is thought to work by modifying the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the area of the brain that regulates sexuality.

Although I hate to reduce it to this, the fact is that sexual desire is basically just brain chemistry.

Like every medicine, flibanserin can cause side effects in some people. These include low blood pressure, nausea, fainting, and possibly sleepiness while driving. Women should not drink alcohol or use birth control pills while taking it because they can worsen the side effects.

These side effects and conditions can be pretty big drawbacks for a drug designed to improve the sex lives of pre-menopausal women.

NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District, Kane County, Illinois, as follows: Section 1. Incorporation of Preambles. The Board of Trustees hereby finds that all of the recitals contained in the preambles to this Ordinance are true and correct and do hereby incorporate them into this Ordinance by this reference.

Section 2. Determination to Adopt Budget for 2016. It is necessary and in the best interests of the District, that the District adopt the attached Budget covering projected revenues, costs, expenses and capital expenditures, including operating and maintenance costs. The Budget contains an estimate of the revenues and expenses of the District for the calendar year 2016. Such Budget for 2016 is hereby approved and shall constitute the budget for the District for said year.

The sums set forth in the Budget are hereby appropriated and budgeted for the corporate purposes of the District for the calendar year 2016.

Section 3. 2016 Budget Items. The Budget for 2016 has been prepared in conjunction with the District's operator, and has been reviewed by the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees has provided for the collection of real estate taxes levied against all taxable property within the territorial limits of the District in an amount set forth in the Budget and shall take such action as necessary to implement such tax levy. The District is authorized to make such payments or reimbursements or take such other action as is generally contemplated by the Budget without further action of or by the Board of Trustees. It is expressly and specifically agreed that the Trustees of the District shall have authority (and are hereby granted such authority) to sign checks or take other appropriate action to make payments, disbursements, or reimbursements of expenses in substantial accordance with the Budget. Any and all excess revenues or any savings in Budget items may be expended in making up any insufficiency in any other item or items in the Budget and for the general corporate purposes of the District.

Section 4. Severability. If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity of such section, paragraph, clause or provisions shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

Section 5. Repealer. All ordinances, resolutions or orders, or parts thereof, in conflict with the provision of this Ordinance are to the extent of such conflict hereby repealed.
