Mayor optimistic about developments

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke on Tuesday summed up his outlook for business in Batavia in one word – optimistic.

Schielke addressed members of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce during the annual Mayor’s Breakfast, during which he outlined a number of areas in Batavia that are ripe for development or redevelopment.

He said the city is poised for a housing boom in the next few years, as an estimated 1,200 to 1,500 new housing units soon could be built there.

He said a recent annexation of Mooseheart property is slated to be used to build senior or age-restricted housing units. As many as 830 housing units could be built on that property, he said.

“I anticipate this will be developed over the next few years,” Schielke said. “That 1,200 to 1,500 [housing unit] number – a lot of that will take place in the Mooseheart area.”

Schielke said he anticipates the Siemens property between McKee and West Wilson streets along Van Nortwick Avenue soon might be developed into a mixed-use residential housing area, possibly including condos, townhouses and single-family homes.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke addressed members of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday during the annual Mayor’s Breakfast in Batavia. a new business in town, Schmanke Media – a company that takes aerial photos and videos using small model planes – Schielke took chamber members on a tour of Batavia from above to show areas that soon might be developed.

Schielke said many major retailers have chosen to build in the Tri-Cities area because the population of the Tri-Cities, combined with that of Mill Creek and

Campton Township, adds up to about 125,000 people, and counting.

Schielke highlighted the new addition to the Walmart store and noted that Batavia has become known as the central Kane County grocery area.

“What’s missing is a higher-end Fresh Market-type of grocer,” he said. “I predict one or two of those will show up on the Tri-Cities stretch of Randall.”

Holiday in the Grove set for Saturday

asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – This year, Holiday in the Grove organizers are giving attendees more time to partake in the festivities planned at the Sugar Grove Community House.

“People said they didn’t have enough time to enjoy everything,” organizer Diana Baker said of extending the building’s closing time to 2 p.m.

Activities at the Community House start at 8 a.m. with breakfast with Santa, which also will be offered at 9 and 10 a.m.

The cost is $6 and includes pancakes, sausage, fruit and

a drink. Call Baker at 630466-7160 or Lorrie Larson at 630-466-0366 to register for the breakfast. Walk-ins will be accepted, Baker said.

“Nobody’s going to get turned away,” she said.

A cake walk, pictures with Santa and children’s activities also will be at the Community House.

Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St., will host activities, including a craft show with 37 vendors and a children’s craft area, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Baker said.

Also at the school, she said, a storyteller is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m., and cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus will be from 1 to 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, a variety of activities – including face painting, Christmas stories and gingerbread house decorating – are set from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sugar Grove Public Library, 125 Municipal Drive,

Tree-lighting ceremony will kick off Christmas festivities Santa to stop by event, Kaneville Fire Department

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Christmas in Kaneville organizers say they hope to start a new holiday tradition at the annual festival by adding a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony to this weekend’s festivities.

Pat Hill, village president and owner of Hill’s Country Store in Kaneville, said the village partnered with Kaneville Township to make the tree-lighting event happen.

“We always thought we should have a tree lighting like all the other villages, and this year we brought it up to the [village] board,” she said.

“They thought it was a great idea, and we just decided to do it.”

The lights on the tree, donated by Strang Landscaping, will be switched on at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in front of the Kaneville Community Center, 2S101 Harter Road, Kaneville, but that’s not where it will permanently stay.

Hill said the live tree, which stands at 7 or 8 feet tall, eventually will be planted at Hill’s Country Store and will be used year after year for the tree-lighting ceremony.

Members of the community are encouraged to bring an ornament representative of their family to hang on the community Christmas tree during the ceremony.

Santa will start at the tree-lighting ceremony and then will visit with children at the Kaneville Fire Department, 46W536 Lovell St., Kaneville.

Christmas in Kaneville festivities continue until 1 p.m.

Karen Flamand with the Kaneville Township Historical Society said unique mangers will be on display at the Farley House this year.

Flamand said those interested in loaning a manger to display during the festival can call her at 630-557-2854.

“They could loan us the manger for the day and write a little description about

it and how it’s special,” she said, noting mangers can be very old or made out of unique material. “It doesn’t have to come from Kaneville.”

Hill said Jim Feece and Village Board Trustee Carl Hauser plan to give tractor-pulled wagon rides around town on Saturday, as well.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday touted the passage of a comprehensive pension reform that he said will erase the unfunded pension debt and provide 100 percent funding for the systems.

In a statement, Quinn said he inherited “the worst-funded pension crisis in the nation due to decades of mismanagement,” and made pension reform a top priority, broke ongoing legislative gridlock and worked with leaders and lawmakers to pass the bill.

“I’ve pushed relentlessly for a comprehensive pension reform solution that would erase a $100 billion

liability and restore fiscal stability to Illinois,” Quinn said in a statement. “Today, we have won. The people of Illinois have won. This landmark legislation is a bipartisan solution that squarely addresses the most difficult fiscal issue Illinois has ever confronted.”

But others, including State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, voted against it.

“My feeling is that it was unconstitutional particularly as it affects retirees,” Fortner said. “The state constitution says retirees pensions’ ‘cannot be diminished or impaired.’ It’s crystal clear.”

Future legislatures would not be bound by the guarantee of funding because the

language is no stronger than what already exists, he said.

“The pension system can sue if the state fails to make the payments required by law. Because all the past problems of pension holidays and all that other stuff, the Legislature never missed a payment required by law,” Fortner said.

“We changed the law … so it would not be able to sue us.

During budget process, if a future legislature wants more money for something, they go back to same old tricks,” Fortner said. “The so-called ‘guarantee’ is a wink and a nod and a hope that a future Legislature will do what supposed to. It hasn’t worked.”

Rittmueller, 100, of The Lutheran Home, Arlington Heights, formerly of St. Charles and longtime resident of Addison, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at The Lutheran Home of natural causes.

Adolph was born Jan. 18, 1913, to Gustav Rittmueller and Anna Schwarz in Addison. He was one of 10 children, all of whom have preceded him in death, as well as have his parents.

He took over his father’s business and was the owner and operator of Rittmueller Lumber Company of Addison from 1946 until he sold it in 1975. From 1976 to 1982, he was associate for development at Wheat Ridge Ministries, Chicago.

Throughout his life, Adolph was active in community, religious and charitable organizations. These

included the Addison Public Library Board of Directors; Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois, Board of Directors and Treasurer; Board of Governors; Walther League Camp Arcadia, Arcadia, Mich.; Board of Control, Concordia College, River Forest; as well as numerous positions in service for his local churches in Addison and St. Charles.

Adolph is survived by five children, Philip (Barbara) of Youngsville, N.C., Paul (Rhoda) of Grove, Okla., Robert (Sherian) of Crowley, Texas, Jon (Susan) of Bellingham, Wash., and Maureen DeLassus (Mark) of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service in the Chicago area at a later date with interment in Concordia Cemetery, Forest Park. The family requests memorials be made to The Lutheran Home Foundation, 800 W. Oakton St., Arlington Heights, IL 60004.

ENEVA – Jayni Wunderlich carefully poured Belgian semi-sweet chocolate chips into a mixing bowl partially filled with fresh butter.

“When I was little, I always wanted to make the best chocolate chip cookies,” she said.

On this particular day, Wunderlich, the head pastry chef at Graham’s 318 Coffeehouse in downtown Geneva, at 318 S. Third St., was in the process of making brownies.

A picture window that separates the restaurant from the kitchen allows customers to watch her work.

“It reminds people that everything is made here,” Wunderlich said.

Her day begins at 5 a.m. as she begins preparing the cookies, croissants, muffins and other baked goods that the restaurant sells every day.

She said the schedule suits her.

“I’m a morning person,” she said.”I think you have to be if you are doing something like this. By the time it’s 10 a.m., I’ve already made everything for breakfast and lunch.”

She juggles many hats.

Wunderlich also is vice president at Graham’s Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream, where she handles all the graphic design, branding and marketing for Graham’s.

Wunderlich is busier than usual these days now that the holidays are here.

Her whole family is busy, too. Her parents, Robert and Beckie Untiedt, started Graham’s Chocolates, Ltd. when Jayni was 3 years old.

Graham’s 318 Coffeehouse, which is part of the company, opened in 2005.

“My father said I always wanted to be in the kitchen and check things out,” Wunderlich said. “I would hand him graham crackers to make s’mores.”

After a few more steps, it’s time to pour the gooey mixture into an electric mix bowl, where Wunderlich adds yet more semi-sweet chocolate

She said she believes a brownie should taste as chocolaty as it can.

After finishing the brownies, she checks on the other items she has made that morning, including a tray of cake pops.

“I like to find things that we can make out of leftover ingre-

dients, like cake pops,” Wunderlich said. “I like to think out of the box.”

On Friday, Wunderlich and the rest of her family will be making candy canes from scratch during Geneva Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas Walk in downtown Geneva.

People are invited to come

The candy canes are given out to those who watch.

“It’s kind of a way to thank our customers,” Wunderlich said. “It’s cool to have the kids come and press their faces against the glass.”

Naperville resident Michael Mason, 60, criticized Roskam, the chief deputy whip, saying residents are Michael “waiting for Mason him to do something about job creation. We’re waiting for him to work for us instead of the special interests that fund his campaigns and pay for his junkets. … We’re tired of waiting for Peter Roskam.”

Roskam’s representatives were offered a chance to respond to Mason’s comments but had not yet done so as of Tuesday evening. As it stands, the candidates would meet in the general election slated for Nov. 4, 2014.

Roskam’s district includes northeast Kane County through the center of DuPage County, Algonquin Township in McHenry County, and southwest Lake and northwest Cook counties.

Mason said “there is an opportunity” to unseat Roskam.

He said Roskam “just hasn’t done” what constituents want.

He said his background, as the retired manager of the Great Lakes Area Distribution/Networks Office for the U.S. Postal Service, would help prepare him for the job. He said he improved the efficiency of large, complex systems. He said he never has run for an office, but said, “it just seemed like now is a good time for me to get more involved.”

Mason said it’s time for people to work “across the aisles.”

In a news release, Mason pointed out that as the chief deputy whip, Roskam “is charged with ensuring that all House Republicans vote to support the GOP leadership’s agenda.”

Judge Robert J. Morrow sentenced Murtaugh to 18 months of conditional discharge, meaning Murtaugh was discharged from custody

but must follow certain conditions.

Online court records indicate he must attend a victim impact panel Feb. 3 and pay $2,805 in fines and costs. He has paid $90 so far, Corey R. records show.

Man charged in home invasion in St. Charles KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – A Broadview man is being held on $75,000 bond after police said he pushed his way into a St. Charles apartment and threatened a resident with a knife.

Marquis Walker, 26, of the 2100 block of 15th Avenue, Broadview, is being charged with home invasion, a Class X f e l o n y , Marquis Walker criminal trespass to a residence, a Class 4 felony, and aggravated assault, a Class A misdemeanor.

The St. Charles Police Department was called to the 100 block of South 17th Street on

Monday for a report of a man who “pushed his way into an apartment after the victim opened the door,” according to a news release from police.

Police said Walker, who was known to the residents of the apartment, pushed his way past the victim and started threatening the resident with a knife. No one reported any injuries related to the incident, and Walker fled on foot, police said.

Police searched the area, and later located and arrested Walker at a nearby apartment complex, states the release.

Walker appeared in bond court on Tuesday at the Kane County Judicial Center and was unable to post bail. He was remanded into custody, police said.

Teen used aerosol spray to get high while driving ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles teen accused of using an aerosol dust spray to get a quick high while driving faces a charge of reckless conduct, among others, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

Scott Anthony Sheble, 18, of the 500 block of Steeplechase Road, was charged with reckless conduct, unlawful Scott Sheble use of an intoxicating compound and two counts of improper lane use.

At about 5:08 p.m. Saturday, a car driven by Sheble reportedly hit two vehicles when making a wide turn from Foxfield Road onto northbound

Dunham Road in St. Charles.

Continuing north slowly, he bounced off a curb near the south entrance of St. Charles East High School, before veering off the road and knocking over a light pole, police said.

Sheble appeared disoriented and didn’t remember hitting the vehicles or light pole, police said.

He told a sergeant he ingested the contents of an aerosol computer duster spray can to obtain a “quick and temporary state of intoxication,” police reported.

“Sheble did this while driving, which caused him to black out,” police said.

Police reportedly found three cans of the spray behind Sheble’s driver’s seat. One was almost empty, one was mostly full and one was full, police said.

The classes are aimed at boosting students’ skills for the workforce. This month, ed2go, named Waubonsee among its top 50 institutional partners.

Pat Carley, Waubonsee’s manager for product development and workforce development, said ed2go is widely

used and respected among the colleges and universities that use it.

The recognition as one of the top 50 is a recognition of the college’s longevity with ed2go and the number of students who go through the courses, Carley said. About 100 students take the courses each year, she said.

“Workforce development is a noncredit division of the college,” Carley said. “We offer face-to-face traditional as well as online for professional development or continuing education or preparation for nationally recognized certifications.”

The short courses are six weeks and used to develop extra tools for workplace skills.

The longer courses, which could have 200 to 300 hours of content, are for career training and could take six months to complete, she said.

“They are pretty rigorous,” Carley said of the longer-term courses. “Some are aligned to nationally or state-recognized certification. The pharmacy technician course is to prepare you for the certification board exam.”

Short-term courses cover many topics, such as professional development for teachers, she said. A teacher might

take one of these on teaching math to fifth-graders or how to discipline middle school students.

Others cover grant writing, fiction or short-story writing, graphic design, Photoshop or computer applications, she said.

The short-term courses are inexpensive, most of them costing about $100; the longterm courses cost more and many involve downloading textbooks, she said.

Prospective students have to be motivated and disciplined to learn material online and email instructors with questions. Carley said

online learning is not for everyone.

“While you are doing this on your own time and probably in your own home, there is an instructor behind every course,” Carley said. “Exams are to see if you have mastered the content. ... Some people need that. ... They need interaction with a live instructor to answer questions right away or to be with other students.”

Police said items were stolen at about 8 p.m. Saturday – the same evening the Bata-

via boys basketball team competed in the Windmill City Classic. During that game, the Batavia High School football team was honored at halftime after winning the 6A state title earlier in the day.

Stolen items included an iPhone worth about $100; an iPhone 5S worth about $700; a Galaxy S4 cellphone worth about $300; and an S Phone worth about $500, according to police reports.

In addition to the cellphones, a pair of Soul headphones worth about $150 and another pair of headphones worth about $300 also were taken.

A bank card, $5 in cash and another $10 in cash were missing as well, police said.

School officials said they would not comment on the incident, as it still is under investigation by the Batavia Police Department.

• A locked 2007 Honda CRV was reported burglarized Sunday, Dec. 1, in the 1800 block of West Main Street, St. Charles. Two purses valued at $70 and $250, a $50 wallet, a driver’s license, a state identification card, six credit cards, gift cards and $300 were reported stolen. An innocent conversation about “Idol Gives Back,” a charitable campaign by the TV show “American Idol” to fund malaria nets in Africa, sparked a life-changing decision for Justin Ahrens.

“My daughter asked, ‘What is malaria, and why does Africa have so much difficulty?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know,’ ” said Ahrens, 41, a Batavia father of four. “So I started researching it.”

As he researched, Ahrens commented to a friend that he believed he was supposed to do something more with his life and through his company, Rule 29, a strategic creative firm in Geneva. And he knew that it had to do with Africa.

The friend urged him to speak to his son, who was working on a project to bring clean water to Ethiopia.

“It was the greatest sales pitch ever,” Ahrens said.

“He said, ‘I can’t accept your handout – only if you agree to go with me.’ Not a day goes by that I don’t think about one of the kids that I met. I needed that.”

That was six years ago, and since then, Ahrens has been to Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan through Lifewater, a charity devoted to sponsoring clean water projects.

He has filmed two documentaries, “This is My Home” and “This is My Normal.”

Now, he and a friend are going to ride bikes 1,000 miles from Boston to Chicago from May 30 to June 13 next year, hoping sponsors will pay $40 a mile to raise $40,000 for another clean water project in Uganda.

Ahrens said he focuses on a quote from United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to inspire his mission: “We shall not finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria or any of the other infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation and basic health care.”

“When I came back from Africa the first time, I had a hard time grappling with my normal versus their normal,” Ahrens said. “I just felt that I couldn’t not do something. I couldn’t ignore it. Elburn trustees approve tax levy

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A public hearing for Elburn’s property tax levy didn’t draw any comments from residents Monday night, and trustees unanimously approved the levy for the village, as well as two special service areas.

Also, village trustees approved an underground easement for AT&T, something Village Administrator Erin Willrett called “some unexpected hurdles” that had been holding up construction of the project to extend Anderson Road. The project ultimately will lead to a bridge to provide a crossing over the train tracks in town.

Doug Elder, the village’s finance director, said the overall levy request isn’t likely to result in a significant increase for residents, but those in the special service areas will see an increase.

In special service area No. 1 – an area that includes the northern part of town – Elder said residents can expect to pay $23 more than last year.

And in special service area No. 2 – which includes the Blackberry Creek area – Elder said residents can expect to pay $27 more than last year. He said that for years, the village had been levying

at a flat rate for the areas, but said the increases will “correctly reflect” the expenses for required maintenance.

Overall, the village will ask for $824,000, but Elder said officials expect to receive about $700,000. Elder said the equalized assessed value figure has continued to go down, and that will affect how much the village can collect.

Village President Dave Anderson said residents ultimately pay about $8 a week in taxes for the village’s services.

Later, trustees gave approval for a permanent underground easement for fiber cable. Trustee Ethan Hastert recused himself from the discussion and the vote.

Willrett said the Kane County Department of Transportation, developer ShoDeen and AT&T had planned to establish an underground route for an existing fiber cable. But she said the route “did not work out the way we thought it would.” She said the board’s approval would give AT&T the easement it needed and “as soon as they do get it signed, construction will commence.”

Trustee Jeff Walter asked what the hurdles were. Willrett said it was the route through the cornfield.

Amazon’s drone offers vision of cool, terrifying future BLOOMBERG NEWS

With characteristic concern for coolness over commercial viability, Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos unveiled a new kind of delivery vehicle Sunday night. It’s called an octocopter, and it will fly all by itself, attuned to GPS coordinates, dropping off goods at customers’ doorsteps for same-day delivery.

Or at least that’s what Bezos, a consummate PR man, told a wide-eyed Charlie Rose on “60 Minutes.” The octocopter unveiling was masterful publicity, properly hyped and well timed for the start of the online holiday shopping season. Yet for all the showmanship, there’s reason to believe that Amazon is on to something.

If nothing else, it’s a reminder that expanded use of commercial drones is inevitable – a prospect that’s equal parts thrilling and terrifying.

Drones have the potential to be a great boon to law enforcement, emergency workers, commuters, weekend campers … the list is almost endless.

Businesses are only just beginning to dream up commercial applications. If Amazon’s idea ever becomes reality, its effect on retail could be pervasive and – to borrow an adjective from another gifted technology salesman – magical.

No one wants to stand in the way of a future of instant diaper delivery or the already famous pizza drone.

But sometimes the best response to a publicity stunt is a reality check.

First, it isn’t clear that the gadget Bezos unveiled, known as Amazon Prime Air, would be legal. A lot depends on the details, but the Federal Aviation Administration published a “roadmap” for regulating drones in November that would seem to rule out autonomous vehicles of the kind Bezos described. Even if the company resolves such issues, don’t expect

drone delivery anytime soon – as Bezos indicated, FAA certification for the devices could be many years away.

Second, as one glance at the octocopter in action suggests, drones are potentially hazardous (as is, to be fair, any flying object with rotors, an electric power supply and five pounds of cargo). Most drones lack the ability to automatically “sense and avoid” other objects, such as airplane engines, tall buildings and small children. And never mind the opportunities the octocopter would present to thieves, unscrupulous neighbors and teenagers seeking target practice.

The third big concern is privacy.

That’s not an obvious issue with a delivery drone that you’ve basically invited to your home. As a thought experiment, though, imagine a Department of Homeland Security copter flying soundlessly above your neighborhood, equipped with high-resolution cameras, audio recorders and facial-recognition technology.

That’s why getting the right privacy rules in place will be critical. The FAA – which typically concerns itself with regulating safety – declined to include detailed privacy or civil-liberties safeguards in its report last month. Many state and local governments are considering their own privacy laws, but that’s a cumbersome and probably ineffective approach to regulating technology that doesn’t recognize borders. Eventually, Congress will need to get much more aggressive on this front.

If, years from now, drones are buzzing about America’s neighborhoods, seamlessly navigating the skies and gently dropping off all of life’s necessities at our doorsteps, give Amazon a lot of credit for dreaming big and dreaming early. And make sure it has your correct address.

Hoyt acclimates to area, excels

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com St. Charles East senior Shea Hoyt figured to encounter pool pressure simply by growing up in a swimming-saturated environment.

That she credits her family’s move to St. Charles for jolting her career suggests something about her parents’ largely casual approach, and something more about what Hoyt feels inside each time she prepares to dive into her lane.

Yes, Hoyt is the daughter of two former collegiate swimmers – one a former Olympian – and the sister of another one-time collegian. Still, she said she derived equal motivation from her teammates after the Hoyts relocated from Atlanta in late 2011, eventually turning that momentum into a nod as Kane County Chronicle Girls Swimmer of the Year.

“Last year, I was definitely overwhelmed because it was my first year swimming high school in Illinois,” Hoyt said. “There was definitely an overwhelming experience. But this year, I felt like I knew what I needed to do. I was more comfortable this year.”

Hoyt earned the Chronicle area’s top individual finish at last month’s IHSA state meet at New Trier, placing third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03:07. She also was part of East’s fifthplace 200 medley relay and 12th-place 200 freestyle relay.

Classmate and fellow Iowa recruit Izzie Bindseil joined Hoyt in the 200 freestyle relay. The duo played a big role in the Saints’ Upstate Eight Conference and sectional championships, as well as an eighth-place team finish at state, the program’s first top-10 showing since 2010.

“Just great spirits,” East coach Joe Cabel said. “They enjoy swimming and they enjoy the team. Just absolutely have not been any kind of problem whatsoever. They’re two great kids.”

Hoyt made friends at South Forsyth High in the Atlanta suburb of Cumming, Ga., but soon had to leave them after her father, Rick, transferred positions at Pepperidge Farm midway though Hoyt’s sophomore year.

She competed for just one high school season at South Forsyth – prep boys and girls both swim during the winter in Georgia – but joined the St. Charles Swim Team club program shortly upon her arrival in Illinois.

That’s where she met Bindseil and many of her current friends while embracing SCST’s enjoyably competitive culture.

“It was awesome that I could go to school and swim with my best friends,” Hoyt said. “It’s just a really great group of girls.”

Added Bindseil: “We’re all pretty laid back. None of us are too crazy or tense, and I think that’s what helped our team.”

Hoyt endeared herself to the Saints as a junior, finishing seventh in state in the 100 breaststroke. Her swim of 1:03.92 was the fifth-fastest in the event, although she was racing in the consolation final.

Your 96-yard touchdown reception from Micah Coffey in the first quarter was the longest in 6A championship history. How did the play develop?

I beat my guy and I was hoping Micah could see me, and he threw a perfect ball right into my hands, and I just broke free with no one behind me. … It was a flag route.

What helped the defense prepare for Richards? I know you guys had experience [from a Week 2 loss to Richards].

[Defensive coordinator] Matt Holm does a great job watching film, and so does our new coach, [assistant Billy] Colamatteo.

They both do a great job just exposing what teams do, and we just repeatedly go over it throughout the week, so it helps us a lot to always know what’s coming, so it’s hard for teams to pick on us.

How long will this victory take to register?

I think in a couple weeks, it probably will [sink in]. But it’s just an honor to do this for this team because I know we’ve worked so hard. So just to come out every day … was huge.

Bulldogs, Vikings to team up for Washington relief Cash donations to benefit those affected by last month’s tornado in downstate Washington will be accepted throughout Friday’s girls/ boys doubleheader between host Batavia and Geneva.

The schools are billing the night as “The Rivalry To Help Rebuild Washington, IL.” The girls varsity game is set to tip off at 5:45 p.m., with the boys scheduled to start at 7:15. Donations also will be accepted during Thursday’s lower-level games.

The Batavia varsity girls passed through Washington last week while traveling to Morton for its Thanksgiving tournament. The experience quickly prompted jarring reactions.

“Driving through Washington didn’t feel real,” Bulldogs senior center Erin Bayram said in an email. “I never thought something like that could actually happen until I saw it with my own eyes. It was extremely emotional and I instantly knew we needed to do something to show our support to the town.”

“Just the way it worked, you know,” Saints coach Lori Drumtra said.

“I didn’t even realize it until I was looking at the schedule and went, ‘Oh, gosh.’ And two of them are tournaments with a few games in between. There aren’t always a lot of home games at the beginning of the season. But yeah, we call ourselves the road warriors.”

East will need a new moniker come the new year, as it plays eight of its final 11 games at home.

Puou’s triple-double leads Mooseheart KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE MOOSEHEART – Mooseheart boys basketball coach Ron Ahrens searched his thoughts for a moment while assessing senior Makur Puou’s triple-double Tuesday night against Hope Academy.

First and foremost, Puou’s 22 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocks helped Mooseheart to a 69-51 victory.

Beyond that, one aspect of Puou’s night in particular especially turned the tide.

“His defensive presence underneath made a huge difference in the game,” Ahrens said.

With two minutes left in the half, a Quincy Kellett layup again put Rosary within one, 23-22. But once again, a Wiggins 3 widened the gap.

Kellett was the top Royal scorer with 14 points.

While the Blackhawks stepped up defensively in the second half, their offense continued to click and at the end of the third quarter, increasing their lead to 44-29.

“The adjustments we tried to make, the kids just didn’t catch on quick enough,” Wil-

cox said. “And before you know it, we are down [15 to 20]. And that is a hard deficit to come back from. It’s hard.”

Rosary, which finished the night 10 for 40 from the floor, scored three baskets in the second half.

“When you don’t score, it’s hard for your defense to hang on that long,” Wilcox said.

“In the second half, our shooting wasn’t too good,” Kellett said.” I think we were just rushing things.”

AURORA – The Rosary girls basketball team didn’t realize that scoring 12 points in the second quarter of Tuesday night’s game against West Aurora would fire up the Blackhawks’ defense.

The Royals scored two more points than West Aurora typically wants its guests to score in a quarter.

The Blackhawks stepped up their defense in the second half and allowed Rosary only 10 points the rest of the night in a 59-32 nonconference win.

“We set a goal before the game started, that we would only allow 10 points each quarter,” West Aurora coach Connie Siljendahl said. “The team was pretty upset with themselves at halftime, so they said they were going to come out, focus on that and stop them.”

“West Aurora is known to fight,” Rosary coach Jessie Wilcox said. “One thing I will give them credit for is they make adjustments as the game goes on.”

Britney’s latest is a beat behind

By ALLISON STEWART Special to The Washington Post By now, almost everyone realizes that there’s not much Britney in a Britney Spears album.

She has always been an empty vessel – a likable, lovely blank onto which fans could project whatever they wished. To trust in any pop star requires a suspension of disbelief: that they really write and sing their own songs, that they are really in charge of their own careers.

The in-control pop diva is too often a fiction of female empowerment created and sold mainly by men (see: Rihanna) to fans who want to believe, because the alternative is too depressing.

How much you appreciate “Britney Jean,” Spears’ eighth and most instantly forgettable album, depends partly on your willingness to fill in the blanks where Britney should be. “Britney Jean” sells a variation on the usual myth of Britney as a sassy, sexy, warm-blooded, God-fearing pop star. Because of her problems – including a much-publicized breakdown, an ongoing conservatorship (she is not allowed to oversee her legal or personal affairs) and a worrisome avoidance of unguided public appearances – this seems like wishful thinking.

Spears’ last few albums have been busy, intermittently dark exercises in disembodied club pop, an ideal format in which to hide an unsteady star. One of her best recent releases (“Blackout,” recorded at the height of her troubles) hardly required her participation. But “Britney Jean” is being marketed, as Britney or whoever runs her Twitter account recently tweeted, as her “most personal album ever.” For the first time, Spears, 32, is credited

as the lead songwriter on every track. The result isn’t remotely personal, doesn’t venture much beyond the usual Britney themes – fame is confusing, sex is fun, I am a totally normal person with the same worries as you, let’s dance – and will do nothing to reassure anyone that the once familiar, pre-2007 Britney is in there anywhere.

There once was a time when Britney dropping an album was a cultural event.

Now, it’s just a potentially nice thing that occasionally happens. And this time, there’s not a great or even a really good song in the batch, which is baffling: Britney has always existed as a vehicle for irresistible bangers, even when she seems to hardly exist.

Spears has never been a musical pathfinder; like Madonna, she’s better at break-

ing down avant-garde sounds and reassembling them for mainstream consumption.

But “Britney Jean” is hopelessly dated; its exercises in EDM, dubstep-pop, disco, trance and arena ballads would have sounded familiar in 2011.

Spears’ team is always a beat behind when it comes to choosing producers and material. So it makes sense the duties have been handed off to Will.i.am, who feeds everything through that same gurgly electro-pop filter used on every Black Eyed Peas song in existence. The best tracks keep him at arm’s length, like the record-opening “Alien,” a thumping dance track co-created by “Ray of Light” auteur William Orbit with a gut-wrenching opening line (“There was a time / I was one of a kind”), and “Tik Tik Boom,” a collaboration with

T.I. that’s great except for the part where T.I. shows up (“She like the way I . . . beat her / Treat her like an animal / Somebody call PETA”).

There are grimmer moments: “Til It’s Gone” is a naked Lady Gaga homage that’s beneath Spears’ dignity, with lyrics (“Daylight can’t confine me to a cage”) a bit too on the nose. “Perfume,” a ballad co-written by singerturned-hired-songwritinggun Sia Furler, is awkward but novel. It relies less on Auto-Tune than most of the album’s songs, demonstrating that when given the chance, Spears is better at conveying emotion, at putting across the hiccupy sadness and longing of a broken relationship, than almost anyone else in her class.

Furler and Katy Perry co-wrote “Passenger,” an ode to giving up control in a relationship that would be appalling even if it were ironic. (It isn’t. Britney is never ironic.) Co-produced

by Diplo, it might as well be titled “Ode to My Conservator Overlord”: “It took you to show me / I could hand over the keys,” robot Britney coos.

“I’ll let you lead the way now / ‘cause I want you to take the wheel.”

There is no level on which this song is not horrifying, derivative and cruel. But it’s still not as weird as Spears’ duet with little sister Jamie Lynn, a former child star who dropped out of the business to raise her daughter. “Chillin’ With You” is a preposterous folk-dance track that seems to exist for no reason other than the Spears family’s desire to reintroduce Jamie Lynn to the same music industry that devoured her sister. Jamie Lynn recently released a country single; her debut album is tentatively due next year.

Blame aging for puffy eyes and dark circles Dear Doctor K: Why do I have bags, puffiness and dark circles around my eyes? What can I do about it?

Dear Reader: My Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Robert Shmerling wrote about this a couple of years ago in the Harvard Health Letter newsletter. Here’s some of what he said: Gently pinch the skin under your eyes and give it a little tug. You’ll feel that it’s a little looser and thinner than skin elsewhere. It’s also looser and thinner than it used to be. As we age, some of the fat under the skin of the face disappears. The fat under the skin beneath our eyes that we’re born with is like wind filling a sail. As the fat disappears, the skin under the eyes becomes like a sail without wind to fill it out. In addition, gravity when we’re sitting or standing (which is true most of the day and evening) tends to pull what’s left of the fat downward into the upper cheeks.

Thinner and looser skin also allows fluid to collect, causing a puffy appearance. What was a smooth, pink surface when

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff there was fat beneath the skin now becomes a pale and bloated surface. The dark circles under the eyes are caused by blood pooling in the veins just under the skin. When there was more fat under the skin, it covered up the blood in the veins beneath it.

You’ve probably noticed the puffiness and dark circles when you first get up in the morning. That’s because when you are lying down, gravity is not pulling fluid in your tissues and blood in your veins downward into the cheeks below your eyes.

There’s some folk and spa wisdom about how to get rid of bags, puffiness and dark circles: wet, cool tea bags; cotton balls dipped in rose water; and, of course, the iconic cucumber slices. Many of my patients find that under-eye creams and ointments help reduce the puffiness

on awakening.

Finally, there’s always cosmetic surgery if these treatments are not helping you enough – and if you have the means to pay for it.

In some cases there may be an underlying cause you can treat. Nasal congestion is an example, as it causes veins around the eyes to dilate. Treating the cause of the congestion (an allergy, perhaps) can make the dark circles go away.

If your eyes have gotten noticeably puffier and the puffiness doesn’t go away, see a doctor. Puffy eyes can be a sign that you’re retaining fluid, which can be a symptom of a serious medical condition.

Also talk to your doctor if your eyes got puffy after you started a new medication or facial cosmetic, or ate a new food.

You may be having an allergic reaction.

Dr. Wallace: Ken and I have been friends ever since junior high school.

We both graduated in June and a day after graduation, he joined the Navy and was sent to boot camp. Before he left, he called and asked if I would write to him if he sent me his military address. I told him I would, and after he started writing to me I faithfully answered every single letter he wrote to me.

It was fun to hear all about the military life and how he was adapting to it. Then after a while, his letters seemed to be a little more romantic and sort of like he thought I was his girlfriend, even though we had never dated. Because I have had a crush on him since we first met in algebra class, I was thrilled that he now was signing his letters “Love, Ken.” When he came home on leave, he called me and asked me to go out for lunch. I was excited because we were going out on a “real date.” We enjoyed a nice lunch, but he didn’t even say he was glad to see me.

All he talked about was his exciting adventures in the Navy. When he dropped me off at my house, he said he’d give me a call. I waited and waited for that call but he didn’t call me until the day his parents were driving him to the airport to catch his plane to go back to his base in San Diego. He said he would write to me as soon as he got back to his base.

This really has me disappointed and depressed, especially when I heard that he had taken his ex-girlfriend out to a party. I had hopes of something more, but now I think he just wanted to have me for a pen pal so he could say he got mail. He had mentioned how impressed his

I’m sure he will start writing to me again, but I really feel like writing “Return to Sender” on the envelopes and then send them back unopened. What do you think? Returning his letters unopened will send a message, but not a very precise one.

You can convey far more with words than dramatics. Even though he disappointed you, he’s still your friend and you should continue writing to him.

You never know what the future will be concerning romance.

It’s possible that Ken and you could become sweethearts, but it’s also possible that he will just be a good friend. However, don’t sit around waiting for his naval career to end to find the answer. Spend time in your community with good friends, and when a guy asks you out, and it looks like he has “boyfriend” potential, say yes to his offer.

Dear Abby: I have been with my fiance since 2006. We expected to be married in 2008, but my grandmother died a month before my wedding, and then he was arrested because of charges stemming from a sexual relationship he’d had with a 17-year-old girl he had been counseling.

Since then, we have had a daughter, but through it all there have been cheating, drugs, jail, no job, and constant excuses about why our sex life no longer exists. We have also had physical altercations, which he was arrested for.

I am no longer happy with this relationship. The only reason I stay is because of our children. I’m only 33 and don’t want to live my life in misery anymore, but I will sacrifice my happiness for my children. I am confused and don’t know what to do. I’m just going through the motions in life. It is unusual to bid a slam after a single raise, but the South hand has few losers. His three-club rebid was a help-suit game-try. And when North jumped to four hearts to say that he had club assistance, it was a fair gamble for South to bid the slam.

There seem to be two unavoidable trump losers. However, if South can get his trump length reduced, he might be able to endplay West. This requires finding the West hand with exactly 3-4-4-2 distribution.

Declarer plays a diamond to dummy’s ace, ruffs a diamond in his hand, cashes the spade king, ruffs his last spade on the board, trumps another diamond, cashes the club ace, leads a club to dummy’s king, and ruffs the last diamond.

Everyone is down to three cards. South retains the kingjack of hearts and a low club.

West has three trumps. So, when declarer leads his last club, West is forced to ruff and play away from his heart queen. Six hearts bid and made!

Kane County Chronicle / kcchronicle.com PUBLIC NOTICE FOX RIVER & COUNTRYSIDE FIRE/RESCUE DISTRICT, KANE AND DUPAGE COUNTIES IL ORDINANCE NO. 2013- 07 Amending2013-02, Amending2011-15, Amending 2011-07 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING AND RESTATING THE FOX RIVER & COUNTRYSIDE FIRE/RESCUE DISTRICT COST RECOVERY AND FEE PROGRAM FOR MEDICAL, FIRE AND SPECIALTY RESPONSE SERVICES WHEREAS, the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District (the "District") is a fire protection district duly organized under the laws of the State of Illinois; (the "District"), DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois, is a fire protection district duly incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois, including the Fire Protection District Act (the "Act", 70 ILCS 705/1 et seq.); and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees (the "Board") of the District has full power pursuant to Section 6 of the Fire Protection District Act to pass all necessary ordinances, and rules and regulations for the proper management and conduct of the business of the Board for carrying into effect the objects for which the District was formed (70 ILCS 705/6); and WHEREAS, Section 22 of the Act grants the Board of Trustees of a fire protection district the authority to "fix, charge and collect fees for emergency ambulance service within or outside the fire protection district" (70 ILCS 705/22); and WHEREAS, the District continues to render emergency medical services on public and private property within or without the District to resident and non-resident persons, businesses and other entities in the performance of its obligations to the public; and WHEREAS, the provision of such emergency medical services continues to incur costs to the District and its residents; and WHEREAS, the Board adopted Ordinance 2011-07, establishing a schedule of charges and assessing fees for reimbursement for such emergency medical services on June 15th, 2011 and whereas, the Ordinance has been amended and restated from time to time; and WHEREAS, the Board finds that it is in the best interest of the District to amend the fees for continued provision of such emergency medical services. WHEREAS, the Board desires to amend and restate an Ordinance that provides for the District's Cost Recovery and Fee Program for Medical, Fire, and Specialty Response Services. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Board of Trustees of the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District Kane & DuPage Counties, Illinois, as follows: Section 1: The Board finds and determines the foregoing Recitals to be true and correct, and said Recitals are incorporated herein as if written out here in full.

Section 2: For the purposes of this ordinance, "resident" is defined as someone who permanently resides within the District.

Section 3: That a fee shall be charged for emergency medical services rendered by either the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District or by any fire protection district or municipality which provides emergency medical services to the District pursuant to a mutual aid agreement with the District, according to the fee schedule contained in Exhibit A. Section 4: Fire and Rescue Service. a) Definitions. i) Careless. Not taking ordinary or reasonable care, including the disregard of the safety of other. ii) Contract. An oral or written agreement to have work performed by a contractor. iii) Contractor. Person or entity who has a contract to perform a task or service. iv) Emergency incident response. Any call or incident requiring the fire department to respond regardless of the call initiation. Emergency incident response means the provision of authorized assistance during and following a response. Actions may include incident assessment, control operations, containment, abatement of hazards and actions to reduce the likelihood of secondary damage. v) Incendiary act. A fire purposely set by a person or persons. vi) Incident. Any request, by any person for the services of the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District. vii) Malicious act. A wrongful act intentionally done without legal justification or excuse; an unlawful act done willfully and purposely. viii) Negligence. Failure to exercise the standard of care that a reasonable prudent person would use under similar circumstances, including the doing of something which a reasonable and prudent person would not do.

Section 5: Expenses means the labor cost of Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District, employees or contracted personnel, cost of district equipment and or apparatus, cost of materials, cost of disposal, the cost of any contract labor, and any costs from other assisting agencies: a) Ensuring the safety of the public, both on and off the site of the emergency incident response. b) Repairing or replacing equipment if said equipment was damaged or destroyed as a direct or indirect result of the emergency incident response c) Equipment, including rental equipment, utilized by the district to the extent such labor and equipment is necessary for emergency incident response, incident assessment, control, containment and abatement of the immediate and secondary hazards. d) Contract labor and equipment utilized by the district for emergency incident response, incident assessment, control, containment and abatement of the immediate and secondary hazard. e) Compensation costs for Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District employees for the time devoted to emergency incident response, investigation, supervision, report writing or administrative tasks relating to the emer-

Includes the actual costs of government and volunteer personnel including worker's compensation benefits, medical and hospitalization costs due to injury, administrative overhead, costs of equipment, cost of equipment operation, and costs of materials. f) Labor and equipment utilized by Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District the via a mutual aid agreement for emergency incident response, incident assessment, control, containment and abatement of the immediate hazard. g) Disposable materials and supplies consumed and expended as a result of the hazardous materials incident, including but not limited to, absorbents, foams, neutralization agents, over pack drums, containers, fire hose, firefighter personal protective equipment, extrication equipment, fire suppression equipment and emergency medical service equipment. h) Decontamination of equipment that is contaminated during response to any emergency incident covered. i) Other expenses incurred in response to a hazardous material incident, including but not limited to; rental or purchase of machinery, equipment, labor, consultants, legal and engineering fees, water purchased from municipal/district water systems, transportation costs, meals, lodging and meals for persons evacuated from an area during a hazardous materials incident.

Section 6: Acts requiring cost reimbursement. The following acts are subject to the fees enumerated in subsection (b)(3) of this section: a) Negligent/careless acts. Any contractor, whose negligence or careless actions or conduct causes an incident resulting in an emergency response, shall be required to make restitution, pursuant to section (b)(3) of this section to the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District for the costs of that emergency response. b) Aggravated Medical Emergency. An alarm that results in a district emergency medical unit being dispatched, and the person transmitting, or causing the transmission of the alarm, knows at the time of said transmission that there are no reasonable grounds for believing that a medical emergency exists. c) Aggravated Fire Emergency. A fire caused by the owner or occupier of property or a structure, which presents a direct and immediate threat to public safety, thus requiring immediate action to mitigate the threat and the fire: d) Is caused or contributed to by the failure to comply with an order from the State, County, or City, District agency. i. Occurs as a direct result of a deliberate act in violation of State law, ordinance or code of the County, City or District agency. ii. A fire that constitutes arson or reckless burning as defined by the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District ordinance. iii. An alarm that results in the district fire unit being dispatched and the person transmitting or causing the transmission of the alarm, knows at the time of said transmission that no fire or fire related emergency exists. e) Malicious or incendiary acts. Any person, whose malicious or incendiary act causes an incident resulting in an emergency response, shall be required to make restitution, pursuant to section (b)(3) of this section to the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District for the costs of that emergency response. f) Driving under the influence. Every person found guilty, including an order of supervision or probation, of section 11-501 entitled, "Driving while under the influence of alcohol, other drugs or drugs, intoxicating compound or compounds, or any combination thereof" of the Illinois Vehicle Code, who proximately causes any incident resulting in an appropriate emergency response, shall make restitution pursuant to the fees in subsection (b)(3) of this section to the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District for the district's costs of that emergency response. g) Salvage operations. Fee contained in Exhibit A shall apply. h) Fire company standby. When a fire company (engine, truck, or ambulance) is requested or required to stand by for a non-district sponsored event, the person responsible shall be required to make restitution, pursuant to subsection (b)(3) of this section to the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District for the costs of such fire company standby. No person shall contract for fire company standby services within the district other than with the district fire department unless the district is unable to provide such services.

Section 7: Fees. 1) Base fees. a) The following fees shall apply to all acts enumerated to subsection (b)(2) of this section and are contained in Exhibit A. a) The fee for use of any equipment not stated or contained in Exhibit A above shall be the higher of the current Federal Emergency Management Agency schedule of equipment rates or the schedule of average annual equipment ownership expense prepared by the Illinois Department of Transportation. b) A minimum of one hour shall be charged. Subsequent hours will be billed at 15-minute increments.

2) Additional fees. The following additional fees shall apply as indicated in Exhibit A. 3) When a fire company (engine, truck, or ambulance) is requested or required to stand by for a non- district-sponsored event, the person or organization responsible shall be required to make restitution, pursuant to the fees in subsection (b)(3) of this section to the Fox River & Countryside

Fire/Rescue District for the costs of such fire company standby. No person shall contract for fire company standby services within the district other than with the district fire department unless the district is unable to provide such services.

4) Waiver of fees. Upon written application, the fire chief or his/her designee, or the Board, may waive or reduce fees, upon his/her discretion, based on mitigating circumstances.

SECTION 8: Program Fees 1) The following fees shall be paid by participants in the following fire department programs and classes as contained in Exhibit A. SECTION 9: That each section, paragraph, clause, sentence, and provision of this Ordinance is separable and if any provision thereof is held unconstitutional or invalid for any reason, such decision shall not affect the remainder of this Ordinance nor any part thereof, that can be given effect without such invalid provisions.

SECTION 10: The ordinance shall be in full force and effective 10 days from and after its passage, and publication in pamphlet form as provided by law.

SECTION 11: Any person, firm, entity or corporation violating any provisions of this ordinance shall be fined not less than one hundred ($100.00) nor more than seven hundred fifty ($750.00) dollars, and each day a violation occurs shall be considered a separate offense. In addition to the extent allowed by law, the District shall be entitled to recover from any violator its costs of collection, including reasonable attorney's fees. Counsel for the District is authorized to institute any such enforcement proceedings as directed by the President of the District.

SECTION 12: To the extent permitted by law, no permits shall be issued to any person, firm, entity or corporation that has outstanding fees due the district.

SECTION 13: 1. The secretary of the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District is hereby directed to publish this Ordinance in pamphlet form.

Publication shall take place at least ten (10) days prior to implementation of this Ordinance. The provisions of this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect ten (10) days after publication as provided by law (70 ILCS 705/7).

SECTION 14: Ordinance Nos. 2011-07 and Ordinance 2011-15, and all other Ordinances in conflict with any provision of this Ordinance are hereby repealed, except as to any claims or causes of action for fees, charges, or other expenses, including but not limited to costs of service where recoverable under the prior ordinances, whether pending or accrued as of the date of this Amendatory Ordinance, and in such cases such claims or causes of action shall not be abated but shall proceed as if said Ordinances shall not have been repealed, it being the intent of the District that all such claims and causes of action be specifically preserved.

FOOTNOTE(S): These footnotes are included and made a part of this Ordinance.

(1) 1 The provision of medically necessary supplies and services as defined in the National EMS Practice Blueprint. A basic level of pre-hospital and inter-hospital emergency and non-emergency care, as authorized by IDOT and the department EMS medical director, that include: (1) Airway management.

(1) CPR. (1) Control of shock.

(1) Control of bleeding.

(1) Splinting of fractures.

(2) 2 The provision of medically necessary supplies and services including the provision of an ALS Assessment or at least one ALS intervention, IV and cardiac monitor are the most common.

Supplies and services may include specialized intravenous medications, maintenance of central venous lines, ventilators, and other specialized skills as approved by the village's medical director and deemed necessary by the requesting facility.

Stop by Elburn for holiday stroll KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – The return of the reindeer will be one of the highlights of the 18th annual Elburn Christmas Stroll, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at several locations in the village.

The reindeer attraction – there will be two reindeer – will allow one of the village’s newest businesses, Lighthouse Academy, to make a big splash at its first Christmas Stroll. Lighthouse, at 153 Wright St. – near the village’s McDonald’s location – also will have children’s activities.

Linda Thomas, director at the Lighthouse location, said the childcare facility was excited to be such a significant part of one of the village’s signature events. She said the facility opened just last week. She said when she told organizers that Lighthouse wanted to be part of the festivities, “they said you need to get something big.” She said visitors will be able to pet the reindeer and take pictures.

The Christmas Stroll is hosted by the Elburn Chamber of Commerce, and it is co-chaired by Brian O’Connor and Bob Britz. O’Connor said the reindeer previously had been a feature of the celebration, but that the attraction was discontinued for financial reasons.

Perhaps the best-attended location each year is the Town and Country Public Library, at 320 E. North St. in Elburn. That is where Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit with youths, and it’s common for a long line to stretch through the library.

“Santa and Mrs. Claus at the library are always the big draw,” O’Connor said.

North St. To demonstrate some of the dangers present during the holidays, there will be tree-burning demonstrations at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Also, the Elburn Citizen Emergency Response Team trailer will be on Main Street near American Bank and Trust at 8 S. Main St. The bank will offer an opportunity for youths to create their own trail mix.

Education in Action iART Blends Technology and Art Taylor Carlson, a fifth grade student at John Stewart Elementary, made this beautiful piece not with paper and paint, but with the latest medium – technology. As an extension to a handmade painted piece, fifth graders in Miss Laura Baker’s and Mrs. Heidi Gilkey’s art classes created Van Gogh inspired artwork using the Sketchbook Express application on I-pads. Miss Baker and Mrs. Gilkey explain that it isn’t about getting rid of the traditional mediums, like paint, the iPad and other technology can be valuable additions to the students learning experience. They explain that the art room really is a place where technology and teaching can work together to enhance student creativity, visual literacy, divergent thinking and more. Miss Baker and Mrs. Gilkey have made it their goal this year to bring as much new technology into their art rooms as possible.

Miss Christensen’s Extended Day Kindergarten students have been working hard during Writing to become authors of their very own “mini books.” These mini books contain around 5 sheets of paper cut in half and stapled together, the perfect size for Kindergarten hands! The class has read many books and examined things that their favorite authors have done to entice readers. After reading and discussing the students are off to create their own masterpieces. While working the students begin mimicking things they have learned, such as speech bubbles, title pages, and even reviews on the back. Each student has a unique work of art including written words and illustrations. Mini books have made Writer’s Workshop fun and exciting for all of the little authors in Miss Christensen’s class.
