GENEVA – The Geneva Park District Marathon Club for Teens will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 12 to Feb. 11. Participants will aim to reach the goal of 26.22 miles over the period of the class.

Judge dismisses lawsuit of driver hit by ambulance

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Kane County judge dismissed a lawsuit against the city of Geneva this month, filed by a man who was injured when a Geneva ambulance rear-ended his car in 2011 on an ice-covered bridge along Kirk Road.

Plaintiff Alfredo Garcia of Carpentersville filed suit in 2012, seeking more than $50,000 in damages for his injuries. Also named in the suit was the ambulance driver, Glen Baum.

Court records show that Garcia was stopped on Kirk Road about 5 a.m. Dec. 29, 2011,

because of an accident farther up the road. His 1997 Honda Civic was southbound on Kirk, near the intersection of East State Street.

According to court records, several other vehicles also were stopped – in both right and left southbound lanes – on the bridge.

Garcia’s lawsuit alleged that Baum was driving too fast and was negligent in failing to stop before hitting Garcia’s car, and that he was careless in not recognizing the danger of ice on the bridge.

Kane County Judge Edward Schreiber granted a motion for summary judgment filed by the city’s attorney. According

to court filings, Schreiber had denied the city’s earlier requests for summary judgment to dismiss the complaint.

“There is absolutely no evidence in this record establishing any conduct on the part of Glen Baum that rises to willful and wanton conduct,” according to court papers seeking summary judgment. “At most, Baum may have been negligent in failing to brake soon or recognize the black ice.”

Schreiber’s order dismisses Garcia’s complaint “with prejudice,” which means he cannot refile his claim in state court against the city or Baum.

Garcia’s attorney, Matthew Howard, said the next step

could be to appeal Schreiber’s ruling.

“I’m going to advise my client against that,” Howard said. “I don’t think he would be successful with it.”

Howard said the case hinged on a state law that gives immunity to emergency vehicles.

“Whether the ambulance was an ‘emergency vehicle’ at the time – we argued it was not,” Howard said. “But the judge ruled otherwise.”

Howard said his client is doing better and is back to work.

According to Geneva Fire Department reports that were part of the court records, a fire engine also encountered ice on

the Kirk Road bridge and slid into a parked Geneva police car.

The police car was unoccupied, as the officer had walked over to the other vehicles stopped on Kirk to check on the conditions of the drivers, according to the fire department report.

“The bridge was completely frozen over and was a solid sheet of ice,” according to the fire department report. “All units responding to the scene were advised not to drive on the bridge.”

Attorneys representing the city did not immediately respond to a voicemail message seeking comment.

Fox Valley Park District opts for no tax levy increase KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Fox Valley Park District residents will see a tax freeze continue after the district’s board of trustees decided not to increase the district’s levy amount for the fifth consecutive year, according to a news release.

The district was allowed to levy an increase of up to 0.8 percent, plus new growth, but trustees and park district directors made the decision not to levy for the full amount out of consideration for residents and the financial challenges many might be experiencing in the recovering economy, Executive Director Jim Pilmer stated in the release.

“Because of the district’s

decision to levy a flat tax amount again – and the probability of a higher equalized assessed valuation in Kane and DuPage counties – these factors are likely to lessen the tax burden of our residents,” Pilmer stated in the release.

“The total request for tax receipts for the park district remains the same as the past five years.”

For each $100 in taxes paid by residents in Kane County, about $5.35 goes toward the park district, equating to an annual tax bill of $488 for the owner of a $250,000 home, according to the release.

Finance Director Diana Erickson said the actual amount collected might be lower, because of the restrictions of the Tax Cap Limitation Act; the consumer price index as determined by the state for this year’s levy is 0.8 percent, the release states.

HIGH-ALTITUDE VISUAL CHANGES If your winter vacation plans include snow skiing, you may be interested to know that high altitudes may have an impact on your eyesight. The fact is that the decreased pressure of rarified mountain air affects the physiology and structure of the eye. This finding comes from researchers who accompanied mountain climbers to heights around 20,000 feet above sea level (and higher). They found that some climbers experienced increased intraocular pressure, which was deemed to be temporary.

After returning to base camp, intraocular pressures returned to normal. Researchers additionally found that, as oxygen levels decreased, central corneal thickness increased. As a result, some skiers and snowboarders may find that their visual acuity is temporarily affected.

P.S. Altitude-induced changes in the eyes do not apply to airline passengers because jet cabins are pressurized.

A four-time national champion and former U.S. team coach, DiPasquale is both an eloquent and enthusiastic proponent of the benefits of Shotokan karate.

“It’s something for everybody, and – by that – I do mean every body. You pretty much have to be tall to play basketball, and gymnasts are almost always petite. But there is no one body type for karate. It’s an inclusive sport and art,” DiPasquale said.

Classes start with a bow to the instructor, or sensei, as a way of both demonstrating respect for the trainer and for the lessons to be learned.

for young participants, and the concentration required to follow Shotokan karate’s moves and techniques can be of particular benefit to children and teens with ADHD. Setting goals begins early on, and students can progress through requirements to achieve belt levels from white at the beginner stage to black belt at the advanced level.

“Karate lets you work at your own level and measure progress not only by your own physical ability, but also by the goals you set for yourself,” DiPasquale said. “It’s a great practice for individual athletes who don’t find a home in team sports.”

Bernadine V. Cooke, 82, of Batavia, IL, unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2015, at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, IL. She was born on September 29, 1933, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Bernard Charles and Evelyn (Sroka) Graf.

Bernadine was united in marriage on May 30, 1953 in Arlington Heights, IL to Dwight A. Cooke.

She dearly loved her grandchildren, supported them in all of their activities. Bernadine also enjoyed cooking and had a passion for traveling.

Bernadine is survived by her husband of 62 years, Dwight A. Convicted murderer Jack McCullough scheduled to return to DeKalb County

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Convicted child killer Jack McCullough will appear before a DeKalb County judge Jan. 14 in another attempt to prove his innocence in the 1957 murder of a Sycamore girl.

A DeKalb County judge issued an order Dec. 17 requesting McCullough be transported from the Pontiac Correctional Center for Jack his next court McCullough date. Judge William Brady will either consider appointing an attorney to represent McCullough on his petition for post-conviction relief or make a decision based on information from McCullough and the State’s Attorney’s Office, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said.

“It will likely be a major factor in determining the direction in which the case goes,” Schmack said.

McCullough was sentenced to life in prison in December 2012 for the kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph, closing the oldest cold case to be solved in U.S. history.

In September, DeKalb County Judge Robert Pilmer dismissed McCullough’s request for post-conviction relief, calling it “frivolous and without merit,” according to court documents. McCullough wrote the petition by hand from prison without help from an attorney.

But the 76-year-old ex-cop filed a successive motion Dec. 11 in another attempt to make his case. Unlike the original petition for post-conviction relief, the successive motion can’t be denied without a hearing from the State’s Attorney’s Office, Schmack said.

Because McCullough is

representing himself at this time, Brady thought it appropriate for the defendant to be present during what attorneys are calling a “case management conference,” Schmack said.

DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, who defended McCullough at trial, has continued to investigate the case and has remained in contact with McCullough throughout his incarceration.

P i l m e r Maria q u e s t i o n e d Ridulph McCulloch’s investment in the case, however, because he had not been appointed to represent McCullough since his 2012 conviction.

“I became aware of his pro se post conviction petition, and knew that there were items and facts that I was aware of and that he was not aware of due to his incarceration,” McCulloch said in a report to the court. “There are still facts that we are attempting to investigate and evaluate which bear directly on his innocence and the manner in which his conviction was obtained.”

McCulloch contacted the Office of the State Appellate Defender, the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission ethics office hotline, and the former head of the ARDC to determine if he had acted unethically in October by filing a motion asking Pilmer to reconsider his dismissal of McCullough’s initial post-conviction petition, court records show.

The ARDC is the administrative agency that regulates licensed lawyers in Illinois at the direction of the state’s Supreme Court.

Based on the feedback he got, the public defender said he believes he acted appropriately.

“When the County en-

tered its original Order of Dismissal, it became clear to me that certain items should be brought to light to avoid any further injustice,” McCulloch said in his report.

One point of contention centered on the recollections of Jan Swafford, 74, who was known as Jan Edwards in 1957 and was dating McCullough, who was known as John Tessier at the time.

It was Swafford who found McCullough’s unused train ticket in a framed photo of the two of them, which poked a hole in his alibi and led police investigators to renew their focus on McCullough as a suspect.

Swafford said she remembered McCullough asked her to hold onto his train ticket.

She said she told McCullough he should put the ticket in his wallet, but he insisted, and she put the ticket behind a framed photograph of the two of them.

In a 2014 letter to Schmack, Swafford contradicts FBI reports that said she didn’t see McCullough on the night Ridulph disappeared.

Swafford was subpoenaed by the prosecution and came to Sycamore for the 2012 trial, but never testified, she said.

McCullough’s motion claims prosecutors didn’t want her to testify.

The continuous rehashing of the case has been a painful process for Ridulph’s surviving family members, who believe the case is being handled irregularly, said Chuck Ridulph, Maria Ridulph’s brother.

“It’s basically been the same thing over and over and over,” he said. “The same things have been denied now by five different judges, and now for them to bring [McCullough] back here – it’s very upsetting. We don’t see this changing anything.”

The Ridulph family has been present at each of the hearings since McCullough’s appeal.

This can be the start of something really new Let me just start out by saying, happy New Year’s Eve, folks! To think that 2016 is less than 24 hours away is a bit of a shock to me. On a list from one to 10, with one being the worst year possible and 10 being the best year of my life, I would rate 2015 as an eight. This year seemed like one of the longest ones yet.

As each year comes to a close, I always enjoy looking back on everything that went on throughout the past 12 months. Personally, this year, I became happier than I’ve ever been. I learned to love myself and to just live life. Let me tell you, I’m a changed person after I made it a mission every day to be as positive as I can.

In 2015, I officially became an adult, graduated high school and began college. I vacationed in Tennessee, went to a concert and even witnessed the Chicago Blackhawks impress the world of hockey by winning a third Stanley Cup in my lifetime. Some people have exited my life; some have become more distant; and other relationships I have with others have only become stronger.

On a national scale, it appears that every news outlet in America was either discussing the latest mass shooting or reiterating something ridiculous that one of the 50 nominees for the upcoming 2016 presidential election had said.

Each year, I have this “mission” to build a memory box.

I mentioned this last year, but for any of you who didn’t read that column, I’ll fill you in. I fill a box up with tiny pieces of folded paper that have written memories on them. Whenever something in my life makes me smile, I write it down on a piece of paper, date it, fold it up and put it into my memory box. The piece of paper can include a single event,

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina a person – anything. I avoid opening my box to read any of the messages until New Year’s Eve, when I dump out the box of memories and read each slip of paper containing a delightful memory.

I encourage you all to try and create your own memory box (or jar) for 2016. You’ll be surprised just how many positive memories went on during the year. If you don’t want to keep track of your memories on paper, then type them in on your phone or computer. You won’t regret it, as next year you’ll be able to relive a year’s worth of laughter and amusement.

It’s funny; today I looked back at the column I wrote last year around New Year’s Day. In that column, I stated, “I’m fully ready to make this year [2015] spectacular.” I did it; I completed my one goal.

Whatever may have went on this year, I hope something good came out it for all of you.

Maybe you attended a fabulous wedding, became a parent or grandparent, or landed a new job. All I can say is: Congrats!

You made it out of 2015, even if you never thought you would.

I hope 2016 brings you happiness. As long as you are happy, you won’t need anything else.

NBA’s winning decision THE WASHINGTON POST Sports figures are supposed to be role models, but too often they disappoint. Not so with the National Basketball Association and its brave decision to speak out against gun violence. In charting a new course in civic responsibility, the NBA sets a standard that we hope other organizations follow.

In a move unprecedented in professional sports, the NBA is partnering with Everytown for Gun Safety to release a series of sobering public service announcements about the havoc caused by guns. The TV spots, with the first released Christmas Day, were directed by Spike Lee and feature NBA stars, as well as people whose lives have been affected by gun violence.

Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers talks about advice from his parents: “A bullet doesn’t have a name on it.” Richard Martinez, whose son was killed by a deranged shooter, says: “We’re Americans. We don’t have to live like this.” And the chant from sev-

eral people: “In the United States, 88 people die from gun violence every day.”

The words “gun control” don’t appear in the ads, but the decision to team up with Everytown for Gun Safety, founded by former New York City mayor and staunch gun lobby foe Michael Bloomberg, sends an unmistakable and important message about the need for action.

NBA official Kathleen Behrens told the New York Times there was little internal debate about working with the group because “we know far too many people who have been caught up in gun violence in this country. And we can do something about it.” Similar sentiment prompted Abe Pollin to change the name of Washington’s NBA team from the Bullets to the Wizards during a time in the 1990s of awful gun violence in D.C. and after his friend, Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin, was gunned down.

The NBA’s decision follows an alarming number of mass shootings and other gun incidents, and the Times speculated that it might spur other “generally risk-averse, mainstream institutions” to action. Let’s hope Congress is one of them.

Comedy duo/real-life couple to perform at Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival

There aren’t too many people who have what it takes to not only get on a stage and tell jokes, but who also can come up with original material to make people laugh.

For 2012 Geneva High School graduate Bianca Shaw and Cary resident Preston Parker, comedy has come pretty effortlessly for one main reason – Shaw and Parker are a real-life couple.

The two also perform sketch comedy together as part of the group Complimentary Breakfast.

While performing, the duo plays characters that may (or may not) be in a relationship with one another. Shaw and Parker take life’s truths and heighten them to absurd proportions.

Through good times and bad, in sickness and in health, for better or worse, they are Complimentary Breakfast.

They started dating after taking improvisational comedy classes together at Chicago’s Second City – an improvisational comedy enterprise – and have hit it off ever since.

So much so that Shaw and Parker will be part of the more than 160 comedy groups to perform at the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival from Thursday, Jan. 7, to Sunday, Jan. 17.

Their show, which will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, at Stage 773 in Chicago, will be the premiere of Complimentary Breakfast, though the group’s material has been practiced in front of smaller audiences.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey caught up with both Shaw and Parker to discuss their excitement for the festival and more.

Chris Casey: How did you guys get into comedy?

Bianca Shaw: Comedy was something I was always interested in growing up, but I didn’t know much about it. I grew up watching a lot of “MADtv” and “Saturday Night Live” and stuff like that. The performance arts school that I went to didn’t end up working out, so I moved back to Chicago and decided to give Second City a try and got really involved in the comedy scene. I’ve been pursuing it hardcore ever since, and it’s been going amazing.

Preston Parker: I guess I’ve always been a comedy fan. I grew up listening to stand-up comedians like Bob Newhart and Steve Martin, so its always been one of those things that I loved. When I graduated high school, I wanted to give it a shot, and it’s been going great ever since.

Casey: Where did the name of the group come from?

Shaw: That’s a really good question.

So, Preston and I went to [Los Angeles] in April for vacation. One morning, we were sitting in the hotel lobby and eating their complimentary breakfast, trying to think of a YouTube channel name that we were going to start. It just kind of happened naturally, where we were like, “What about Complimentary Breakfast?” I think it really represents us well.

Casey: How did you get noticed for the festival?

Shaw: We performed at Stage 773 this summer. They saw us together and said, “You guys have to perform at the festival.” Ever since then, we have been writing sketches and ideas, trying to get a really good show put together.

Right now, we think we have a really good balance of sketches, characters and songs.

Casey: How much does being a couple help you guys from the writing to the actual performing?

Shaw: Preston and I are really lucky

because we’re around each other all the time and have very similar senses of humor. If nothing else, we write so effortlessly well together and have that effortless chemistry. We write what we think is funny and hope it will make someone else laugh. Doing this with someone that you’re in a relationship with, you have so many similar components. It’s like writing with myself, but double the inspiration.

Parker: Sometimes we get so distracted kissing each other that it’s hard to concentrate. That’s the hardest part.

Geneva boys basketball is stately in Peoria

A staggering stock of big men helped the Geneva boys basketball team to the program’s best season in generations.

Now that’s something worth whistling about, even if that weren’t Vikings coach Phil Ralston’s signature attention-getter.

Year Nate Navigato and plenty of gritty displays elsewhere, Geneva finished 30-5 and placed fourth in Class 4A. No Vikings team had advanced downstate or earned that many victories since 1963. Geneva topped a quintet of 20-win teams en route to the Peoria Civic Center.

Kaneland softball enjoys banner run downstate

Kaneland named a new softball coach just weeks after securing the first state trophy in program history.

Knights players figured interim coach Peter Goff would return to his role as athletic director, but the reigning third-place team in Class 3A couldn’t be happier about the appointment of former assistant Mike Kuefler.

Elite group on track in Charleston

Considering the color of the famed track surface, it’s tempting for athletes to feel blue no matter how they finish at the IHSA girls and boys track state meets at Eastern Illinois.

Melancholy hardly was an option, however, for a select few who captured titles. That group started in on the fun during girls weekend, as Rosary’s Emily Martin, a St. Charles product, won the 1,600 meter title in Class 2A and Aurora Central Catholic’s Karina Liz defended her 2A title in the 800.

On boys weekend, Kaneland’s Danny Walker earned the school’s fourth pole vault title while Lucas Ege of Burlington Central, now a Stanford freshman, won the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Adversity sharpening Geneva

DeKALB – Geneva’s boys basketball season could have gone downhill. And quickly.

Leading scorer Bennett Fuzak hit the floor and did not return in a game against Larkin. The Vikings could have taken that loss in one of two ways: curled up in a ball without their one main piece back from a Class 4A state tournament team, or come together and get better because of it.

As Geneva won its first three games of the 88th Chuck Dayton Tournament, the latter mindset was clearly present. Heading into Wednesday night’s final against the host Barbs, an eventual last-second, 41-39 defeat, it was almost as if the Vikings had become immune to the 6-foot-8 Fuzak’s disappearance.

“We’ve come together pretty well because of that,” senior Jordan Vedder said. “We’d love to have Bennett here play-

Vedder, who called seeing Fuzak go down “one of

the hardest things I’ve had to watch on a basketball court,” provided some of the scoring he showed he was capable of early in the season with 27 points in the first halves of the semifinal win over Marmion and Wednesday against DeKalb.

Vikings coach Phil Ralston did not have an update on Fu-

zak’s condition – an injury that occurred when the senior took an elbow to the back of the head on a made layup before falling to the floor – but Vikings players seemed optimistic about having him back in time for their Upstate Eight Conference River Division battle with St. Charles East a week from Friday.

Ralston needed a number of players to step up and not only contribute scoring in place of Fuzak’s 20-plus points per game, but also as leaders.

Both Cole and Dom Navigato have had increased roles, while senior Sean Chambers and junior Matt Johnston have helped handle defensive duties.

“You can either go one of two ways when an injury like that takes place,” Ralston said. “We needed guys to step up and realize that the season isn’t lost because a guy goes down. The nice thing about this team, especially of late, is that a number of guys have stepped up at different times.”

Vikes ‘ready to rock’ after slow start

By MATT LeCREN editorial@kcchronicle.com LOMBARD – There was no drama for the Geneva girls basketball team on Wednesday, only success.

Showing no ill effects from Tuesday’s triple overtime victory over Rolling Meadows, the Vikings shook off a slow start and rolled past Bolingbrook, 54-39, to win the consolation championship of the prestigious Montini Christmas Tournament.

Sophomore guard Margaret Whitley scored a game-high 20 points and center Grace Loberg added 14 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and three blocks for Geneva (10-2), which won its third straight game and surpassed its No. 10 seeding by a spot.

“I think it means a lot,” Whitley said.

“We take every game really seriously and this tournament is full of good teams that have a lot of talented players. I think it just kind of proves that any team can beat anybody at any time.”

The Vikings lost their tournament opener to Evanston but rallied to beat three quality teams in as many days.

Their energy level never wavered even

after the marathon win on Tuesday.

“Three overtimes is a lot, but that’s what we train for,” Whitley said. “All the practice pays off in those moments.

We just got a lot of rest, a lot of water and came out ready to play.”

Geneva coach Sarah Meadows never doubted her players’ dedication.

“These kids are ballers,” Meadows said. “I mean they’re go-getters, so they’re going to be up every single day. They’re ready to rock.

“We know this tournament is tough and we know that every game we have is going to be tough for us. You’ve got to know that going in.”

Bolingbrook (5-5) held the Vikings scoreless for the first 3:29, taking an 8-0 lead and forcing Meadows to burn a timeout.

Geneva responded as Maddy Yelle sank a 17-foot- jumper to get her team on the board. Jnaya Walker, who led Bolingbrook with 13 points, converted a three-point play to give the Raiders an 11-2 cushion, but the Vikings showed no angst.

“It was a slow start, but when I called that timeout I said, ‘I’m not even mad,’ ” Meadows said. “I thought offensively we

looked fine. We just weren’t hitting shots, so we just needed to dig ourselves out a little bit.”

The Vikings did just that, embarking on a 13-0 run to take the lead for good.

Loberg was a point shy of a double-double at intermission, by which time Geneva held a 30-22 lead.

“I think (the key) was (having) a lot of patience with each other,” Whitley said.

“We talked with each other and everyone said, ‘Calm down, we’re going to start making shots.’ It’s just a matter of when it’s going to happen.”

Whitley scored eight points in the third quarter as the Vikings extended their lead to 47-35 and then their defense took over, allowing just four points in the fourth quarter.

Yelle finished with eight points, two assists and two steals for the Vikings, while Taylor Williams added five points and Stephanie Hart had seven rebounds.

“We knew the shots would eventually come,” Loberg said. “We just had to ‘D’ them up. (The Raiders) had some good tricky plays that we had to keep an eye out for all the time. We just played tough defense the whole game.”

PLANO – The Burlington Central boys’ basketball team – the No. 2 seed in the Plano Christmas Classic – let a 21-point lead slip away against No. 4 seeded Newark in the third place game on Wednesday.

Newark produced a huge second half and ended up with the 66-58 victory over the Rockets (10-2).

“If someone were to ask me if I thought we were going to be 10-2 at this point of the season, I would have said absolutely, but at the same time, having (the two losses) be the last two games is rough,” Central coach Brett Porto said.

“But we’ll bounce back, take a couple days off and get after it in 2016.”

The Rockets were led by Zach Schutta (14 points) and Joseph Ratzek (12).

Elsewhere in tournament play, Aurora Christian topped Kaneland, 63-57, to earn seventh place. The Knights (6-4) led, 3730, at halftime, but cooled offensively after the break.

Ryan David sparked Kaneland with 20 points, while Mark Lilly added 11 points and six assists.

My late mother habitually allowed her growing boy to stretch bedtime on Fridays to watch episodes of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” a pastime I relished, if not completely comprehended.

Carson ended his 30-year run in May 1992, the month of my seventh birthday, yet blurry memories of those late-night sessions remain.

Naturally, one involves a most iconic Carson character, the turban-wearing, soothsaying Carnac the Magnificent.

Today, one day before the dawn of 2016 – and, incidentally, the launch of “The Tonight Show” reruns on Antenna TV – the worlds of Carnac and the Kane County Chronicle collide.

Both types of pillows generally do a better job of conforming to the contour of your head and neck than older types of pillows (such as feather pillows or regular foam pillows).

Manufacturers of memory foam pillows claim they help promote proper spinal alignment. Avoid using too high or stiff a pillow. This keeps the neck flexed overnight and can result in morning pain and stiffness.

But we sleep not only in beds. Sometimes we sleep while riding in a plane, train or car.

And who hasn’t dozed off while watching TV? In any of these circumstances, a horseshoe-shaped pillow can help.

It will support your neck and prevent your head from dropping to one side if you doze.

If the pillow is too large behind the neck, however, it will force your head forward.

We spend a third of our lives asleep in bed. Plus, the evidence is growing good quality sleep each night brings many health benefits.

Dr. Wallace: A girl I’ve known for a really long time was my very best friend. For all of the years I’ve known her she was very sweet and kind.

Dear Reader : As with so many things, an ounce of prevention might be worth a pound of cure when it comes to neck pain.

And how you sleep at night can make a big difference.

Two sleeping positions are easiest on the neck: on your side or on your back.

Whichever you prefer, choose an appropriate pillow.

If you sleep on your back, choose a rounded pillow to support the natural curve of your neck, with a flatter pillow cushioning your head.

You can achieve this by tucking a small neck roll into the pillowcase of a flatter, softer pillow. Or, use a special pillow that has a builtin neck support with an indentation for the head to rest in.

If you sleep on your side, use a pillow that is higher under your neck than your head.

This will help to keep your spine straight.

Sleeping on your stomach is tough on your spine because the back is arched and your neck turned to the side.

Preferred sleeping positions often are set early in life and can be tough to change. (Not to mention we often wake up in a different position from the one we used to fall asleep.)

Still, it’s worth trying to start the night sleeping on your back or side in a well-supported, healthy position.

Feather pillows tend to easily conform to the shape of the neck.

At the bridge table, you must be a man or woman of thought before becoming a man or woman of action.

And if the thought process precedes accurate card-play, your opponents will be unhappy.

In this deal, how should South make his opponents unhappy? He is in three no-trump, and West leads the diamond queen.

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and four clubs.

A player of action would win the first or second diamond trick, cross to dummy by leading a low club to the 10, and take a major-suit finesse.

Declarer would win the next diamond, return to dummy with a club to the queen, and take the other major-suit finesse ... and here go down one.

Yes, that would be unlucky, but North would be unhappy with that line.

South should win the first trick and, strangely, cash his other high diamond.

If East discards, declarer should take his four club tricks, ending on the board, and decide which way to turn.

When East follows suit, though, South next cashes three club tricks, leaving a winner on the board, then exits with his last diamond.
