Four vie for 3 spots in Elburn race ELBURN – Four candidates – two incumbents and two newcomers – will be vying for three available seats on the Elburn Village Board in the April 7 election.

Bill Grabarek and Dave Gualdoni are current board members seeking additional terms. John Krukoff and Michael Rullman aim to join the board for the first time.

Current Trustee Craig Swan did not file for re-election.

Grabarek first was elected to the board in 2003.

He was instrumental in the Elburn Station discussion that was completed last year, often attending board meetings with a list of items he wanted addressed about the project, which ultimately could double the size of the village’s population. He called the process fun and intense and said, ultimately, it was “beneficial for the final product, and it’s still unfolding.”

He said there is much remaining to be accomplished and hopes to be elected to an-

He previously served on the village’s planning commission, as well as with the Friends of the Town and Country Public Library, Lazarus House and the Boy Scouts.

Gualdoni said he, too, wants to accomplish more in another term. He said the village needs to clean up some of its policies and boost its disaster planning.

Gualdoni said the village has “pretty good control” of the Elburn Station situation. He also pointed to the village’s comprehensive plan, which was mapped out last year. He said the village should be more friendly to businesses. He added that his first term provided him

Maple Park’s website to be updated in 2015

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The village will have a new website in the new year. Maple Park village trustees recently approved a contract to hire DeKalb-based eWorldLinx. com to update the village’s website at a cost of $955.

“They try to help small municipalities get their website updated at a lower cost,” Maple Park Village Clerk Liz Peerboom said.

“As a staff, we know you should update your website every couple of years to keep it fresh.”

According to its website, www.eWorldLinx.com, eWorldLinx has been devel-

oping websites since 1997.

As part of the update, the website will be made more mobile friendly and more searchable, Peerboom said.

In addition, the new website will be accessible from both www.villageofmaplepark. com and www.villageofmaplepark.org, which is a new domain name the village has purchased, Peerboom said.

“We are hoping to have it go online by the end of January,” Peerboom said.

Residents will see information on the new website updated in a more timely fashion, she said.

“Many things now aren’t updated as quickly as we would like,” Peerboom said.

Krukoff said he has been an Elburn resident for 11 years, and he had been on the planning commission for five years. He noted that those on the commission had a voice in the Elburn Station plans, and he said being on the Village Board would allow him to help follow up. He said commission members make recommendations to the village trustees and, “I would like to be on the decision side, rather than the recommending side.”

He said Elburn Station “is going to greatly increase the size of the town, but we do need a few more people in town.” He said the key will be to have the village “grow in a way that preserves some of the flavor of Elburn.”

Rullman ran in the most recent Village Board election in 2013, and he said the

village still needs change.

He said it’s not as if board members have made bad decisions, but he said, “I think you need to change leadership from time to time.”

He said the village needs more businesses and that should not wait until the Elburn Station project begins developing further. He said the village must address its water system, beyond the upcoming renovations of the wastewater treatment facility.

Rullman said his last run at the board was a positive experience, and he wanted to run again. He said his father told him to “always give something back to your town,” and becoming a village trustee would be a way he could do that.

“I would like a shot,” Rullman said.

Kane County chairman clashed with coroner GENEVA – Chris Lauzen completes his second full year as Kane County chairman with a variety of notable events in the county.

Lauzen continued his 2012 campaign promise of a property tax levy freeze and was on hand for the May groundbreaking and September opening of the Kane County Regional Training Center.

During the opening, architect Brian Kronewitter said the nearly $2 million project came in $500 under budget and finished in four months instead of five.

The county also launched an online initiative called Kane County Connects with a goal of engaging residents and providing them with

information about events and news in the area.

The publicly funded Connects website, Chris e-newsletter Lauzen and social media are run by Kane County Community Outreach Coordinator Rick Nagel.

Kane County Connects caught the ire of Batavia Township resident Ellen Nottke, who filed an ethics complaint against Lauzen and Nagel, alleging the chairman’s political fundraiser was listed in the e-newsletter. The complaint was referred to the state’s

attorney’s office after ethics adviser Grant Wegner recused himself from reviewing the complaint. As of Dec. 26, an outcome had yet to be announced.

Lauzen also publicly criticized Kane County Coroner Rob Russell this year for seeking a budget adjustment of about $140,000.

A report by former Coroner Mary Lou Kearns determined nearly one-third of the 160 autopsies conducted under Russell’s tenure were unnecessary. Lauzen asked Russell to moderate his spending patterns, but Russell said that the report was meant to embarrass, not help him.

County clerk violates ethics ordinance Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham won his fourth term in office in November, the same month he pleaded guilty to violating the county’s ethics ordinance.

He used county-related computer equipment to conduct prohibited political activities, a misdemeanor.

Specifically, Cunningham used his own iPad and iPhone from his office to access the county’s Wi-Fi about a dozen times for politically related emails about scheduling media endorsement interviews and reviewing campaign brochures.

Cunningham was charged a $500 fine – the maximum the ordinance allows – plus $45 in court costs.

“I did it,” Cunningham said then. “I screwed up, and I have no defense for it. I am so embarrassed. I’m being held accountable. ... I deserve the maximum.”

Geneva doctor accused of criminal sexual assault In July, Geneva internist Dr. Mark Lewis was charged with two felonies – aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault.

Lewis, of Geneva, previously lived in St. Charles, where police and Kane County prosecutors allege that he sexually assaulted a victim he knew on Nov. 17, 2012.

State regulators suspended Lewis’ medical license amid allegations that he had inappropriate sexual relations with several female patients and inappropriately prescribed controlled substances to numerous people.

Regulators charged that Lewis’ “actions constitute an immediate danger to the pub-

lic” in suspending his license.

Lewis pleaded not guilty.

Kane County Circuit Court Judge John Barsanti said, if convicted, Lewis faces up to 30 years in prison on the more serious charge, which could be doubled through the state’s extended terms of sentencing, and no probation.

If convicted of the lesser charge, Lewis could face up to 15 years in prison, which can be doubled, Barsanti said, but with the possibility of probation. Lewis’ next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 9.

Kane coroner Russell achieves accreditation Kane County Coroner Rob Russell continued to take heat from other county officials – from seemingly trivial items such as Silly Putty to more serious issues like autopsies – in a year that included accomplishments and challenges.

Russell kicked off 2014 by unveiling a new office logo.

Created by a design student at Judson University, the logo features a nod to the first coroners – a knight kneeling at a headstone – and rays of sunlight to show that the coroner works all hours, including holidays and weekends.

In August, Russell announced his office was the first in Illinois to achieve accreditation.

“I think I brought integrity back to the office,” he said then.

He did, however, note the obstacles his office faced since he took office, including highly scrutinized budgets and mold that was found in the morgue in June.

Meanwhile, the cost of using DuPage’s facilities contributed to the office’s overspending, which County Board members criticized when Russell asked for a $140,369 budget adjustment.

His request died at the October Finance and Budget Committee meeting after members failed to second the initial mo-

tion.

Russell has maintained that going over budget wasn’t a matter of overspending. Rather, he said, it was a matter of running his office properly.

The overspending prompted an autopsy audit conducted by former Coroner Mary Lou Kearns, who found that about 50 of the 160 cases reviewed were unnecessary.

Russell called the report a farce that was intended to embarrass him – not help him.

Former teacher running for Batavia School Board BATAVIA – After making headlines last year when he instructed his students that they had the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves before answering an in-class survey about emotional and at-risk behavior, former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden is among eight candidates running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in April.

Dryden in October retired from Batavia School District 101. Dryden has said that in the days leading up to his retirement, he was facing a disciplinary action from a parent who complained about a lesson he gave on the 9/11 terrorist

attacks. Dryden said he was facing a three-day, unpaid suspension for teaching an unauthorized lesson.

John The disDryden trict told him he would have to use only school board-approved sources in the future, Dryden said. But, he said, the school board’s only approved sources are textbooks.

In running for school board, Dryden has said that he wants to create an environment that is collaborative. He taught for Batavia School District 101 for 21 years.

There are three seats open on the Batavia School Board in April’s election. The terms of board President Cathy Dremel, along with the terms of board members Gregg Hodge and Melanie Impastato, will expire next year.

Dremel filed to run for re-election, along with Impastato, who was appointed to the board in June 2013 after the resignation of school board member Kathleen Roberts.

Other Batavia School Board candidates include William “Bill” Gabriel, Ellen Knautz, Christopher Lowe, Michelle Olache and Ron Rechenmacher.

McIlvaine close to finishing project ST. CHARLES – To the relief of city officials, St. Charles resident Clifford McIlvaine is nearing completion on his decades-long improvement project.

Earlier this month, St. Charles city attorney Phillip Luetkehans said he inspected McIlvaine’s property, at 605 Prairie St., with city officials.

“It is 98 percent done,” Luetkehans had said. “There are a few items that we are asking him to screen. We’re getting closer. We’re glad that Mr. McIlvaine is trying to comply with code.”

McIlvaine has agreed to screen the items, Luetkehans said. The next hearing on the case is set for Jan. 28.

Kane County Judge David Akemann last year allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine’s property, including correcting an unfinished roof. The city had sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him

to finish an improvement project that was started more than 30 years ago. A work schedClifford ule later was McIlvaine agreed upon in court.

McIlvaine recently signed a three-page agreement requiring him to remove five commercial vehicles and a trailer with antique engines.

The agreement also called for him to bury a fiberglass tube.

Even though the project is nearing completion, the matter of fines and attorney fees still has to be resolved, Luetkehans said.

McIlvaine briefly was jailed in 2012 when he refused to comply with the city’s plumbing code as part of the overall project. The project was supposed to be completed by the end of September 2012, according to the order.

Judge Keith Brown retires after 23 years After 23 years as a judge in Kane County, Keith Brown retired and stepped down from the bench in June.

Brown served as chief judge from 2008 to 2012.

Brown started his career in July 1991, first with an appointment as associate judge.

There, he served as presiding judge of the traffic and family divisions. He also presided over such matters as DUI, mental health, small claims, juveniles, paternity, domestic violence and child support matters.

Brown was elected as a circuit judge in 1996. His accomplishments include establishing the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles, starting the process of upgrading the

court case management system and, he said, creating ways to get more probation fees paid.

Brown was the first African-American judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit, he said. He said he aimed to bring greater diversity to the bench, which includes women and Hispanics.

Brown said that when he was a practicing lawyer, he represented a client who didn’t feel he was getting a trial before his peers. The jury members, prosecutors, bailiffs and all but one security member were white, he said.

“Minorities were appearing in court but had no other role,” Brown said.

Kaneland mourned death of Wolfsmith MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland community was in mourning in late May, after the death of Kaneland Harter Middle School eighth-grader Parker Wolfsmith. The 14-year-old died after he was hit by a Union Pacific train at a rail crossing in Maple Park in an incident that brought attention to the term “breezing.”

Maple Park Police Chief Mike Acosta said the teen didn’t call the activity breezing, but Acosta understood Wolfsmith liked to feel the power of the train. He viewed a video of the event and said it appeared the teen miscalculated the width of the front of the train.

The death happened only days before the Class of 2018 eighth-grade promotion and dance at Harter. Jeff Schuler, then the superintendent of Kaneland School District 302, said staff members described Wolfsmith as “a fun loving, bright guy” with a “great sense of humor.”

Kaneland School Board member Tony Valente has clashed with fellow board members before, but that reached a new level in 2014.

After the district’s previous superintendent, Jeff Schuler, left to become superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200, Valente voted against hiring Ken Sorrick as interim superintendent. Valente said he was concerned about Sorrick’s availability. Sorrick was voted in anyway, but he resigned the next day.

In his resignation letter, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, Sorrick cited “a certain board member” as a reason why he resigned. He stated that the board member “disrespects you, disrespects the superintendent, disrespects the assistant superintendent, disrespected your union representative and disrespected me.” He wrote that the board member “is interested in sabotaging the organization. I do

Supporters rally behind Kaneville president fighting breast cancer KANEVILLE – Kaneville Village President Pat Hill said she is stunned by how people have cared for her and her family this year.

“I’ve been spoiled,” Hill said.

Her friends, supporters and biggest fans do not agree and instead jump at the chance to help out the village leader and woman behind Hill’s Country Store, nicknamed “the Purple Store” for its exterior color.

Hill this fall announced that

she had been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. As she continues to receive treatment, people continue Pat Hill to hold events in her honor.

Fundraisers included the Nov. 8 Pink Out for Pat, the Nov. 23 Pink for Purple walk and the Dec. 6 Give Back to Pat benefit. Hills said the latter event, which was held at Fisherman’s Inn, 43W901

“Everyone was so generous,” Hill said.

Hill said she will not let cancer get her down. She still puts in hours every day at the village hall, at the Purple Store with the help of her children and continues to contribute to events such as Christmas in Kaneville, for which she decorated the 8-foot tree outside her store.

Police: Sugar Grove man accused of punching man

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A Sugar Grove man accused of putting another man in a hospital with a punch to the face is due in court on criminal charges, according to police and court records.

Todd L. Greenfield, 34, of the 700 block of Merrill New Road,

was charged with two counts each of felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery after an inciTodd L. dent at about 1 Greenfield a.m. Saturday at Calamity Jane’s, 9S593 Route 47, Sugar Grove, records show.

According to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report, the man insulted Greenfield, and Greenfield hit him in the face, causing the man to fall backwards on a bench. A witness reportedly tried to get the fallen man’s attention, but he was unresponsive. Police reported that the man, who was taken for treatment, had not regained consciousness at the

scene.

While at the Kane County Jail with Greenfield, a deputy learned that the injured man was being flown to another hospital in critical condition, according to the report. Kane County court records dated Sunday indicate the man suffered from a fractured skull and bleeding on his brain. The man also was using a breath-

ing tube and was sedated at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, records show.

The man was listed in serious condition midday Tuesday.

Records indicate Greenfield’s bond was set at $35,000 with 10 percent to apply. He was not listed in custody at the jail Tuesday. He is expected in court Jan. 9 for a plea setting.

He took much joy in building relationships and providing quality service, and he impacted many people, their homes, and their businesses by beautifying their landscapes. His most proud achievements included working with St. John Neumann Catholic Church and, most recently, the Salvation Army on 7th Avenue.

For over 30 years, Mark looked forward to the holiday season when he would help families pick out their Christmas tree. It was an opportunity for him to connect with the families in the community and share in the joy of the season, along with sharing hot apple cider and cookies to complete the tradition.

Mark was also an avid local and Chicago sports fan. He certainly passed that passion on to his sons, as they spent countless hours attending and watching games together. Not lost on his family was the fact that he never missed any of his sons’ sporting events.

Throughout his life, Mark was a proud supporter and member of the VFW, St. John Neumann Catholic Church, and the Loyal Order of the Moose. If you ever spent time with Mark, you undoubtedly experienced his fantastic sense of humor. Even as his illness

progressed, he still retained the ability to make us all laugh with his incredible wit. His smile could light up a room and his laugh was contagious.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard William and Elsie (Johnsen) Lindgren; and brother-in-law, Roger Holdaway.

Mark is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 40 years, Mona (Ruane) Lindgren. He was the proud father of his sons, Ryan (wife Jen), Jason (wife Katie, grandson Nolan), and Todd (wife Erin). He is also survived by his six older siblings, Mary (Robert Seaberg), Leonard (Joni), Ruth Ann (Jim Ott), Lois (Tom Lerra), Grace Holdaway, and John (Virginia). A large number of nieces, nephews, and cousins were also an important part of his life.

OBITUARIES ARTHUR J. CLAUTER JR. Born: Feb. 13, 1918 Died: Dec. 21, 2014 Arthur J. Clauter Jr., age 96, of Geneva passed away peacefully on December 21, 2014, with his family by his side. He was born on February 13, 1918, the oldest child of Arthur and Rose Clauter of Chicago, IL. Arthur graduated from Morgan Park H.S. in 1935 and continued his education at The University of Chicago, earning his B.S. in Business in 1939, where he met his wife Hazel. He completed his Masters Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Statistics from Northwestern University. Following school, he started working for the William Wrigley Jr. Company. Arthur left his employment to serve in the Army during WWII. Upon his return to Chicago, he resumed his career with Wrigley’s for a total of 44 years, retiring in 1983 as Vice President of Sales. He and his wife Hazel travelled throughout much of the United States and Europe, but had a special love for their beloved “Chalet” on top of Islet Mountain near Pitkin, Colorado.

Arthur’s hobbies included every aspect of trains; from building model trains, to steam locomotives and was a Trolley Car operator.

Other interests included photography, The Boy Scouts of America and his children and grandchildren. As a youth, he attained the rank of an Eagle Scout in October, 1931 while with troop 608 in Chicago. As an adult, he received the Silver Beaver Award for his lifelong dedication to scouting leadership. Under his direction he guided Troop 37 and always kept his passion for scouting and youth.

He was an active member of The Geneva United Methodist Church, Pioneer Sholes School at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve, Geneva

Historical Society, Preservation Partners, as well as many other local civic organizations and boards.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Hazel (Lindquist); sons, Dean Clauter of Melbourne, FL., Bruce (LaRue) Clauter of Bexley, OH.; daughter, Lucinda (Rodger) Clauter-Lull of Pitkin, CO.; six grandchildren, Arthur and Peter Clauter of Melbourne, FL., Jody Clauter of Laramie, WY., Andrea (Amber) Clauter of Columbus, OH., Sarah (Roby) Lull-Castillo of Tallahassee, FL., Jacob Lull of Pitkin, CO., several nieces and nephews and two greatgreat nephews.

lars stuffed in envelopes, she said, “I think we did very well.”

Conley Outreach, which serves as the Salvation Army extension site for the Kaneland area, saw a record-breaking year in 2013, when about $7,700 was raised through kettles and mailed donations.

Alfrey has said the fundraiser supplements the limited funds Conley Outreach gets from the Salvation Army Metropolitan Division to help families pay for rent, heat, food, clothing and other necessities.

This year, volunteer bell ringers helped Conley Outreach cover every Saturday

between Thanksgiving and Christmas and provided coverage on days leading up to Christmas, Alfrey said.

“We had a lot of volunteers, and that always bodes well for good totals,” she said.

And people seemed to be giving. Alfrey said she rang the bell for two hours on Christmas Eve, and “lots and

lots” of people were donating.

As of Monday, Alfrey still had to take the last of the kettle money to the bank, she said, noting she likely won’t know this year’s numbers for at least a week.

“I haven’t even looked to see what we’ve done,” she said about keeping a running total.

Batavia man pleads guilty in robbery 21-year-old receives probation, jail time

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A 21-year-old Batavia man was sentenced to 48 months of probation and 120 days in jail after pleading guilty to robbery.

Tanner Smith entered the plea earlier this month. Smith, along with Desiree L. Smith, 21, of Batavia, initially faced felony charges of robbery and mob action and two counts of misdemeanor battery for the Oct. 7 incident in which they were accused of robbing and attacking a 16-year-old former acquaintance in Batavia.

In a plea agreement on Dec. 12, Tanner Smith pleaded guilty to robbery, a Class 2 felony, and the remaining charges were dropped, records show. He received 58 days of credit for time served.

Tanner Smith also must pay $1,600 in fines and costs,

including a monthly probation fee of $20, according to court records. Desiree L. Smith was sentenced to 48 months of probation and 90 days in jail, for which she received 45 days of credit for time served.

According to police, the teen was walking in the 1000 block of Pine Street in Batavia when a small black vehicle containing the Smiths pulled up alongside her. The Smiths exited the car and immediately attacked her, police said.

During the assault, police said Desiree Smith forcibly removed a bag of marijuana from the girl. The teen was not seriously injured in the attack and was treated and released at the scene by medics, police said.

The Smiths are not related but were in a romantic relationship, police said at the time of their arrest.

Marklund serves infants, children, teens and adults with serious and profound developmental disabilities and special health care needs at campuses in the Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva and in Bloomingdale.

This year’s theme is “An Evening Along the Nile,” and the event will take place from 6 p.m. Jan. 31 to 12:30 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Chicago Marriott Downtown, 540 N. Michigan Ave. Individual tickets are $350 and include dinner, an open bar, entertainment, live and silent auctions and raffle opportunities. Marklund Director of Special Events Jeannine Zupo said the fundraiser is important to Marklund because it helps with the agency’s day-to-day operating costs, and it helps in other ways as well.

“The Top Hat Ball is our largest premier fundraising event,” Zupo said. “Last year, we netted $360,000 [from the event], but it also helps us raise friends, too.

Lost contact in 2014 THE WASHINGTON POST After the disappearance of another plane over Southeast Asia, 2014 might well be remembered as the year of vanishing aircraft. With advanced communications technologies available, large commercial planes shouldn’t go missing with little clear information about their fates.

It’s past time for aviation policymakers to demand more from the airlines.

It has been days since AirAsia Flight 8501 disappeared with 162 people aboard.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared in March and still hasn’t been found, carried an Inmarsat satellite tracking system that allowed investigators to do some tracing – work that indicated it had turned toward the open Indian Ocean. But it didn’t provide other key details.

Investigators might have an easier time finding the latest missing plane. For now, the AirAsia plane is presumed to have gone down in relatively shallow water.

And it’s true that the number of planes that disappear like this is tiny compared with the 100,000 or so that take off and land without incident every day.

But that doesn’t undermine the argument that investigators should know more now, with information transmitted directly from the aircraft.

Since Flight 370 disappeared, international aviation authorities have been working on aircraft communications and tracking policies with more seriousness – but hardly with urgency. An industry panel recommended some steps this month, calling for airlines to have some tracking function “within potential areas of operation and range” that communicates aircraft location within a nautical mile at least every 15 minutes. The panel also examined the possibility of restricting pilots from switching off transponders – which appears to have happened in the Flight 370 case – but concluded that this should be a “long-term prospect.” Although these standards are pretty basic, some airlines have nevertheless balked.

Now the action is at the U.N.-chartered International Civil Aviation Organization, which wants to establish a new Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System. The technology exists to regularly transmit a lot more revealing information from the sky to the ground. This can be done at close intervals, at times when instruments sense abnormal behavior or both.

International regulators should finally require its use and coordinate standards across the industry. If they don’t, it will be up to national governments to do so.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR THE BEST GIFT OF ALL To the Editor: The Elburn Lions Club recently hosted a toy drive to benefit local children, and the response from the community was tremendous. We’d like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone that donated toys, cash, gift wrap, gift tags, ribbon and dental-hygiene products, as well as assisted in wrapping all the toys. Thank you for your generosity, time and efforts!

With everyone’s donations, we were able to provide gifts for 35 children and 70 adults at Hope Haven and Safe Passage in DeKalb. Each child will receive several presents, books donated by the Elburn Lions for Literacy program, as well as toothbrushes, dental floss, coloring/ activity books and homemade cookies. We were also able to help five families in the Elburn, Kaneville and Virgil area and 20

more families in the DeKalb/ Sycamore area. We also donated a movie-and-popcorn gift basket and extra toys to Hope Haven for everyone’s enjoyment and daily use in the day room.

We’d like to thank the local businesses that placed a donation box at their location, which allowed us to collect all the toys.

The Elburn Lions would like to also thank the individuals who helped with cash donations.

With the cash donations, we were able to complete the toy selection for the children in need, as well as buy gifts for the adults.

Thank you to the Wal-Mart and Target in DeKalb for the gift card and discounts, allowing us to provide additional gifts.

At least it was for North Stars senior guard Jake Ludwig.

Ludwig suffered a cut above his left eye in the first quarter, leaving blood streaming down his face.

He left long enough to get the bleeding stopped and change from his soiled jersey No. 4 to No. 31.

Except for a brief moment in the fourth quarter, when he left to get more bleeding stopped, No. 31 gutted it out, finishing with a team-high 24 points in 24 minutes and 2 seconds of playing time.

“I was frustrated about the cut,” Ludwig said. “I wanted to stay in the game. I’ll probably need stitches. It was a tough game. I’m glad we got the win.”

With its sixth straight win, North (8-4) advances to a 1 p.m. semifinal today against Benet, which also pulled an upset Tuesday, topping second-seeded Curie.

North lost reserve forward John Davern late in the first quarter.

He fell and appeared to hit his head.

“Guys had to come in off the bench and contribute,” Ludwig said. “We trust in what our coaches have us do. We had to be tough defensively and in rebounding.”

North took the lead for good at 10-7 midway through the first quarter when Mikey Schroeder nailed his second 3-pointer. The North Stars led by double digits for much of the second half but No. 3 seed Plainfield North (8-2) refused to go away.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – The obvious pregame storyline leading up to Tuesday’s Geneva-Wheaton Academy boys basketball game centered on the Fuzak brothers, who transferred from Wheaton Academy to Geneva this season.

But while the pair of new Vikings factored into the game, it was an old one – senior forward Nate Navigato – who snatched the game from the Warriors. Navigato scored 32 points, including the decisive basket with 31 seconds to play, as Geneva narrowly escaped Wheaton Academy’s upset bid, 54-53, in the third-place game of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament.

Vikings coach Phil Ralston marveled at another elite performance from the program’s longtime linchpin.

“They’re rotating guys on him, they’re double teaming him – he’s wearing a saddle on him all night with guys trying to ride him all over the place,” Ralston said. “Still, the bronco comes through and is the victor. The kid is tremendous.”

Wheaton Academy nursed a narrow lead for much of the game and went ahead, 45-40, with 5:36 to play in the fourth quarter as Warriors forward Evan Williams split free throws.

The Vikings (10-2) clawed back and took a pair of late leads on Mike Landi free throws, but the Warriors (4-10) claimed their final advantage at 53-52 when guard Bryce Sandberg retrieved Landi’s block of his own shot and floated in a 10-footer with 45 seconds to play.

Navigato then added another memorable shot to a long list as a Viking, burrowing in for a leaner in the lane with 31 seconds to go.

“As I caught it, I saw the guy overplayed me, so I just spun off that and got by him, ran into another player, then I pump-faked, and I knew I’d get him up in the air,” Navigato said. “I just stepped in through and then threw up a little leaner, and it went in.”

Wheaton Academy held for the last shot, calling timeout with 11 seconds left. Although the Fuzaks – 6-foot-10 Chandler and 6-7 Bennett – didn’t play as well as they’d have liked against their old school, Chandler Fuzak’s size bothered Wheaton Academy guard Christian Smith on his final shot, a long, 3-point try that wasn’t close to end the game.

“I’m all about the team,” Chandler Fuzak said. “It wasn’t an offensive

“He was pushing me and stuff and I didn’t like the way he was pushing me, so I pushed him right back,” Navigato said.

Bennett Fuzak picked up a technical foul early in the fourth quarter, shortly before making a 3-pointer to bring the Vikings within 45-43 for his only points of the night.

“I just like the idea of seeing some fight from our kids,” Ralston said.

“Shame on us if they’re going to kind of push us around. Shame on us for letting that happen. Our kids at least responded in the second half and I thought had a much better effort.”

It wasn’t the performance Geneva wanted but plenty of resilience was on display, perhaps typified by senior forward Mike Landi, who played a prominent role with Loudon Vollbrecht sidelined by what Ralston hopes is routine back soreness resulting from a hard fall during Monday’s loss to Neuqua Valley.

Landi struggled finishing much of the game but remained in attack mode, providing six of his eight points during the fourth quarter.

“That’s what we needed from him tonight was that aggressiveness, especially going to the basket, because no one else really was,” Ralston said. “It was good to see that come out of him because we know that’s something he can do.”

After being on the wrong end of a hard foul under the basket early in the fourth, Peez buried a 3 on his next opportunity. Then, Coffey nailed another one from behind the arc to boost the Bulldogs back up to a 10-point lead at 44-34.

Thomas passed up an open look for two to feed Coffey for another 3 on the next Bulldog possession with fewer than 3 minutes to go as the Bulldogs began to pull away.

“I thought we did a lot of things well today that we

necessarily hadn’t done all tournament even though we’d gotten some wins,” Nazos said. “I thought we probably had our best shot recognition on offense, in terms of taking what was open and not forcing things. I thought we really did the little things today; we got loose balls, we got offensive boards.”

Conant defeated Minooka in the other consolation semifinal, 37-35, after the Indians failed to hit the game-tying shot at the buzzer. Coffey is thrilled the Bulldogs earned another game at York.

“It’s awesome,” Coffey said. “We wanted to come in here; of course we wanted to be in the winner’s bracket championship but after that first loss we wanted to come back strong. To be one of six teams left playing out of the 32 teams, we’re pumped to play tomorrow on New Year’s Eve. It’s going to be fun tomorrow.”

ELMHURST – Behind Canaan Coffey’s hot hand, the Batavia boys basketball team pulled away from Sandburg in the fourth quarter en route to a 58-45 win Tuesday night.

The win earned the Bulldogs a date with Conant at noon today in the consolation bracket championship game of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York.

Coffey hit four of his five 3-pointers on the night in the second half to lead the Bulldogs with 24 points, while Chasen Peez added 15 points and five rebounds.

“I can’t be passive in the second half if I miss a lot of shots in the first half,” Coffey said. “You’ve just got to have that shooter’s mentality and keep shooting. My teammates were finding me and I was happy to get it going, which was sweet.”

“Our guys are not selfish, whatsoever,” he added. “Whoever’s got the open look will take it, and I just happened to have the most looks tonight.”

Batavia’s guard play, led by Coffey, Kamontez Thomas and Jacob Roberts, created plenty of havoc on the defensive end and helped the Bulldogs start the game on a 10-3 run.

Roberts had a team-high six rebounds and finished with six points, while Thomas added four points, three rebounds and five assists.

The Bulldogs were able to limit the Eagles’ interior looks throughout the game, forcing them to find opportunities on the perimeter.

“We work a lot on defense in practice and coach has really drilled it into our brains to be out in gaps and close out hard and play defense over offense all the time,” Roberts said.

St. Charles East • Junior • Boys Basketball Why he was selected: Named an all-tournament selection as East won the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament in DeKalb St. Charles East junior boys basketball wing James McQuillan showed during DeKalb’s Chuck Dayton tournament that he’s fully back from his early-season concussion, thriving defensively and providing scoring punch, to boot, during the Saints’ 4-0 run at the tournament. McQuillan also handled point guard duties for East in Saturday’s championship game win over DeKalb with Cole Gentry hampered by foul trouble. McQuillan, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports editor Jay Schwab about the tournament. The following is an edited transcript: Can you touch on not only winning the tournament but doing it in the fashion that you did, four blowout wins?

Our goal was definitely to win this tournament, but to

dominate this tournament. It definitely was a good tournament as a team, and it’s just another step as a team to reach our ultimate goal at the end of the year.

How much fun are you guys having playing together? The result suggests you guys are having a lot of fun.

Probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing basketball. On and off the court, everybody gets along. We’re always joking around. It really shows on the court. It’s just a lot, a lot of fun.

Is it going to be hard not playing for a little bit now until after the new year? As well as things are going, I’m sure a break’s not exactly what you guys want.

Yeah, we would like to play a couple more games right now the way that we’re playing. But we need some rest, get healthy for any injuries we may have.

CARPENTERSVILLE – The Burlington Central girls basketball team came out on the wrong end of a strong fourth-quarter performance one day after orchestrating a dominant final run of its own.

The Rockets were edged out

by Stevenson, 43-40, Tuesday in the fifth-place game of the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic Christmas Tournament that was decided in the final minutes.

Central (11-2) held a 37-31 lead with less than three minutes left in the game after a 3-pointer from senior guard Aly DeTamble. Stevenson (14-1) fired back with a pair of Ashley Richardson free throws and a lay-in from senior guard Taylor Buford. Buford then grabbed a defensive rebound on Central’s next possession and was fouled on a coast-to-coast layup. Buford hit the free throw to put Stevenson up, 38-37, and give the Patriots the lead for good.

The Rockets started their final possession down three points following an acrobatic layup from junior point guard Kayla Ross and a subsequent Stevenson free throw, but they were unable to get off a clean shot from beyond the arc.

The loss came a night after Central held St. Charles North to two points in the final quarter in a game that went backand-forth the entire way.

Ross, who finished with nine points and five rebounds, was confident the Rockets would come away with the win after her offensive rebound and athletic finish that pushed the score to 42-40 with 17 seconds left.

“After (Stevenson tipped the shot), I got the rebound and I just saw a hole and went in,” Ross said. “After that we were only down by two and I thought we had it. We just threw it away at the end.”

Although the loss was difficult to digest, Smith felt that the Rockets will build on its performance at Dundee-Crown.

“I think obviously the girls are disappointed,” Smith said. “I feel we went 2-2 here,

Junior guard Shelby Holt paced the Rockets with 16 points, followed by contributions from Ross (nine) and junior forward Sam Pryor (eight).

The Indians (15-6) hit 12 3-pointers to give them a cushion that held for the entire game. The North Stars (9-6) fought back to within five points in the fourth quarter, but their final push was not enough.

“I’m proud of them for fighting back, but we have to learn that it’s got to be four quarters and we haven’t put four quarters together yet,” North coach Sean Masoncup said. “When we do, we’re scary. The second that we do and we learn to, we’re going to be a scary basketball team. But we’ve shown that we can compete with any team.”

Junior forward Morgan Rosencrants led the North Stars with 18 points, and junior forward Claire Jakaitis and senior forward Nichole Davidson each chipped in 11.

BOYS BASKETBALL: PLANO CHRISTMAS CLASSIC – KANELAND 63, YORKVILLE 61

By RYAN WOODEN editorial@kcchronicle.com PLANO – Before the seeding meeting for the Plano Christmas Classic if you’d have told Kaneland boys basketball coach Brian Johnson his team would finish ninth, he probably would have hung his head.

However, after coming into the tournament with a 1-6 record, the reality of the 4-1 record that comes with the ninth-place trophy helps ease the pain.

The Knights led by 14 points in the fourth quarter at one point against Yorkville on Tuesday. Their lead would eventually dwindle all the way down to one on multiple occasions, but Kaneland would hold on for a 63-61 victory.

Their record now 5-7, Johnson re-evaluated his position after the game.

“We’re still working on things, but it’s nice to get four wins,” Johnson said. “I like our energy and I thought our kids really stepped up. Ryan David had a great tournament.

Dylan Vaca played really hard.

“Defensively, I thought we were really solid for the most part. We had some miscommunications here and there, but, as a whole, I’m just happy with where we are at.”

Kaneland staked themselves to that large cushion behind strong performances from David and Vaca.

David capped his tournament with a double-double, pulling down 12 rebounds to go along with 17 points. Meanwhile, Vaca built off his big game Monday (21 points) with

a career-high 27 points on just 11 shot attempts Tuesday.

It was an efficient day for the junior guard, who has found quite a bit of confidence after two straight big scoring performances.

“I’m not really seeing anything differently out there,” Vaca said. “It’s just that sometimes you get into one of those stretches where you just feel like you can’t miss. That’s where I’m at right now. I always try to be confident with my shots, but they’re just dropping for me right now.”

Eagles finish in 4th at Plano tourney PLANO – Coming off an 18-point loss to one of the most well-rounded teams it will see all season in Dixon, the Aurora Christian boys basketball team had to quickly clean the slate and start fresh.

Fewer than 24 hours later, they faced off against a talented group of Morris shooters in the third-place matchup of the Plano Christmas Classic.

The Eagles proved they were ready to play Tuesday, but might have suffered from fatigue as a dry spell in the fourth quarter led to a 68-61 loss to Morris and a fourth-place finish in the tournament.

It was a disappointing loss for the Eagles, who fell to 8-3 with the loss and went 2-2 in Plano, but when asked to assess the experience as a whole, coach Pat McNamara saw some good.

“The whole season our guys have really improved their shot selection,” McNamara said after a solid 48 percent shooting night from the floor in the loss.

“We’ve been a very unselfish team and I like that. We play hard. Even tonight, I thought we played hard.”

In the first half, Aurora Christian and Morris quickly proved how evenly matched they were. Morris’ Jake Walker scored the first 10 points for the Redskins, but the Eagles’ balanced attack matched him blow-for-blow and at the end of one,

the game was tied at 18.

The second quarter also played out nearly even, with Aurora Christian heading to the break trailing, 33-32.

Walker finished the game as the high-scorer with 23, but right behind him was Aurora Christian’s leading scorer for the tournament, Wes Wolfe, with 20.

Wolfe carried the load offensively and drew a difficult assignment defensively in Morris’ Austin Patterson.

“We worked hard, but we didn’t really have the defense in the first half. We could’ve played better,” Wolfe said.

In the second half, Morris raced out to a lead only to be reined in again by the end of the third quarter when the Redskins sported only a 52-51 lead.

Unfortunately for Aurora Christian, that’s where things broke down. The Eagles opened the fourth with a 4:50 scoreless stretch and never recovered.

“Morris plays good defense. They’re fundamentally sound and they block out,” McNamara said. “That’s a football school and a wrestling school, but [Joe Blumberg] has been there seven or eight years and he’s got those guys buying in.”

Aurora Christian has now placed third and fourth at the Plano Christmas Classic in the past two seasons.

In consolation play at Plano, Burlington Central fell to Ottawa, 68-53.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Montini Holiday Classic: Batavia defeated Bolingbrook, 48-36, to win the consolation title behind 23 points and five blocks from Hannah Frazier.

The Bulldogs (9-9) shined defensively in finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record.

In other Montini action, Geneva lost in double overtime for the second straight day and lost its third in a row overall, falling to Kenwood, 61-57. The Vikings lost a six-point lead in the first overtime as Kenwood hit a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Janie McCloughan scored 19 points and Abby Novak had 10 rebonds and nine points but the Vikings (11-3) struggled with their free throws and rebounding, coach Sarah Meadows said.

“Our kids are going to stick together,” Meadows said. “They’re going to stay together. They’re frustrated. We want to win. They’re huge competitors but this is what we wanted. We wanted to win our first game, go to the right side [of the bracket] and be on the competitive side.

It’s a learning experience for a lot of us.”

Lisle tournament: Wheaton Academy beat Newark, 41-32. Jamie Netzley scored 25 points for the Warriors, who overcame a 10-2 deficit after the first quarter.

The attorney said that “outing” the candidate to the other employee was “not necessarily illegal,” but that it was “DEFINITELY a bad business practice.”

In the 21 states that offer protection for gay people, a prospective employer cannot base a hiring decision on how comfortable someone is with the candidate’s sexual orientation. That is discrimination, and it IS illegal.

Talk to your kids about sex before they reach puberty Dear Doctor K: When should I start talking to my child about sex?

And what topics should I discuss?

Dear Reader: Many parents are uncomfortable talking about sex with their kids, but they know the day will, and should, come.

They often anxiously prepare in advance what they will say if their child asks a question about sex.

There’s an old joke about a young boy who asks his father, “Where did I come from?” His father says to himself, “OK, the time is here,” braces himself, and then spends several minutes talking about sperm, eggs, the uterus, labor and delivery, etc.

The boy, with a puzzled look on his face, replies, “Funny. Johnny says he comes from San Francisco.”

Although you may not realize it, you have been teaching your child about sexuality for years. For example, you helped him learn the correct terms for the parts of the body, including genitalia.

My pediatrician colleagues at Harvard Medical School advise that parents should discuss sex with their child before he or she enters puberty, typically by age 8 or 9. When and where do you start?

Often you do not have to start.

Like the boy in the joke, your child

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff will most likely come to you with questions first. Answer them at your child’s level, with short, clear explanations.

If your child does not come to you with questions, you may need to bring up the subject. You could start by asking how much he knows about something and see where the conversation goes.

For example, “What do you know about how babies are made?”

Once you have opened the conversation, it will get easier.

Over time, you’ll want to cover a lot of ground. Do it little by little.

Don’t overwhelm your child with too many facts all at once.

Consider the next stage in your child’s development. For example, don’t wait until puberty to talk with your child about body changes or menstruation.

Here is a list of topics my pediatrician colleagues recommend that you should discuss with your child: 1. Puberty. Discuss the body changes your child should expect.

Parents of both girls and boys

should discuss menstruation.

2. Human reproduction.

Discuss the body parts related to sexuality, including their actual names and functions. Discuss sexual intercourse, how babies are made and how babies are born.

3. Masturbation. Teach your child that masturbation and self-exploration are normal parts of sexual development.

4. Birth control. Discuss the purpose of birth control. Explain the basic types and how each prevents pregnancy. If you do not believe in birth control, say that, too.

5. Sexually transmitted diseases. Teach your child how these diseases are spread and can be prevented.

6. Homosexuality. Teach your child about different sexual orientations.

A series of matter-of-fact discussions with your kids can give them the information they need – and also arm them against the misinformation they likely will hear from others.

Against four spades, West led a top-of-nothing heart nine. East won with his ace and shifted to the diamond seven. How should South have continued?

After East overcalled one heart, South’s one-spade response guaranteed at least a five-card suit. (With only four spades, he would have made a negative double.) West raised hearts with three-card support and a singleton. East competed to three hearts, the nine-trick level, because he knew that his side had nine hearts between them. But South’s jump to four spades silenced everyone.

Note West’s lead. Since he had raised hearts, he led his highest.

If he had passed throughout, he would have led his lowest. (Yes, all right, if he were psychic, he would have led a diamond, which would have defeated the contract with subsequent accurate defense.)

South won the second trick in the dummy and called for a trump, but East dashed up with his ace and shifted to the club nine. West won with his ace and gave his partner a diamond ruff for down one.

How could declarer have avoided this outcome?

He had to win trick two on the board, cash the heart queen and continue with the heart 10, discarding both of his clubs. Then West could not have gained the lead to give East the critical ruff.

Declarer would have lost only one spade and two hearts with a textbook scissors coup.
