District 302 board OK’s 4-year deal with KEA SUGAR GROVE – Although the vote was not unanimous, Kaneland School District 302 Board on Tuesday night ratified a new four-year contract with the Kaneland Education Association.

The board approved the deal with a 5-2 vote. Ryan Kerry and Pedro Rivas voted against the deal. Rivas said he had some issues with the fourth year of the contract, saying there were “moving parts” and it didn’t feel like a complete deal. Rivas said he wanted to stress “it was not that I do not agree with what we did.”

Kerry also expressed concerns about the fourth year.

“I’m not personally comfortable voting on something until all of the pieces are put together,” Kerry said.

It also includes an increase in the base salary to $40,488 and an incremental reduction in the one-time post-retirement stipend. It added there would be a salary committee

Lori Shroka, the KEA president, said after the meeting that the fourth year was important to the board, and it was “one of the major stones” in the sides coming to an agreement. She called the fourth year of the contract “innovative.”

“It was important to get the contract done,” Shroka said.

Teresa Witt, the board’s president, said she was “very pleased that we reached an agreement.” She added that there was a “lot of creative collaboration.”

Dismissals reduce defendants in lawsuit over injuries at ballpark

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA TOWNSHIP – Complaints against a weather forecasting company recently were dismissed from a lawsuit over injuries individuals suffered during a 2012 severe storm at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, according to Kane County court records.

The plaintiffs – Erin Gautille and sisters Mary and Abigail Gaffney – claim in the lawsuit that each suffered injuries from flying debris during the Aug. 4, 2012, thunderstorm, which was accompanied by high winds.

They were at the Kane County Cougars’ stadium in

Geneva Township as volunteers for the St. Charles East High School Band Boosters, helping serve concessions at a fundraiser.

Murray and Trettel Inc., which does business as Weather Command, was named as a defendant, as were the Kane County Cougars, Professional Sports Catering, Aurora Tent and Awning Inc. and American Sports Enterprises, records show.

Weather Command – which provides weather forecasting services, including storm warnings – was accused of failing to provide the Kane County Cougars with timely storm warnings and

failing to adequately warn the Cougars about the thunderstorm’s severity, according to documents.

In court documents, the business asserted it provided the team’s general manager with timely and accurate data. It also claimed it owed no duty to the plaintiffs and thus could not be held liable.

“No court in Illinois has ever placed a duty on a weather forecaster to provide what the plaintiffs allege was required of Murray and Trettel here,” records state.

Judge Edward Schreiber on Dec. 23 dismissed the complaints against Weather Command with prejudice, which means the plaintiffs cannot

file another case on the same claim.

Also that day, records show the judge granted a motion to voluntarily dismiss the charges against Aurora Tent and Awning without prejudice, leaving open the possibility of refiling within a year of the court’s dismissal.

Aurora Tent and Awning, which pitched tents at the ballpark, was accused of failing to properly secure tents to withstand possible storms, documents state. According to records, the storm “dangerously scattered the tents, tent poles and other debris.”

The case is next expected in court at 9 a.m. April 28.

Gaffney looks to future of Fox River fire district The man who helped usher in a local fire district still has its interests at heart, even though he is no longer one of its trustees.

Jim Gaffney was an active audience member and spoke as a resident of the district at the Fox River and Country- Jim Gaffney side Fire/Rescue District’s Dec. 14 meeting.

Gaffney resigned as board president in October and remained a trustee. He resigned from the board in November.

the city of St. Charles in 2011 and opened two fire stations in spite of residents’ concerns.

After Gaffney left, the board of trustees looked to cut operational costs with a part-time staffing model after they figured district voters would not approve a referendum during the March 2016 general primary to increase the current district tax rate.

Gaffney still sits on the St. Charles School District 303 board, which is currently deciding among four options to help the school district save money. Three of the four options involve closing some of the district’s current schools.

St. Charles theater founder resigned after 15 years ST. CHARLES – Donna Steele, the founder of a downtown St. Charles theater, resigned this fall after 15 years as its executive/artistic director.

The children’s theater production of “Pippi Longstocking,” which ran in October, was the last show she directed at Steel Beam Theatre, 111 W. Main St. “It’s been a wonderful journey,” Steele said Donna Steele earlier this year.

“It’s a lot of hard work, and I am very proud of the work we’ve accomplished, but my career and my heart are calling me elsewhere.”

Steele built the theater using money from an inheritance she received from her parents.

In addition to adult programming, she implemented youth programming in an effort to inject younger generations with the same passion she has for acting.

The city honored her with a proclamation in November.

It highlighted the theater’s achievements, such as attracting more than 100,000 people to downtown St. Charles since it opened.

“Donna Steele, as founder, executive director and artistic director of Steel Beam Theatre, has inspired the creation of ‘a sacred place where we can share the mysteries, the joys, and the wonders of our human experience,’ ” the proclamation states.

Steele indicated she planned to move to Portland, Oregon.

St. Charles North alumnus becomes finalist on ‘The Voice’ A St. Charles North High School alumnus took a chance and went the distance this year.

Jeffery Austin, 24, first tried out for NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition during an open call in January in New York.

He then began a casting process that led to a televised blind audition, where No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani chose him to be a part of her team.

Austin, whose real last name is McClelland, sang during his years at Haines Middle School and St. Charles North, where he graduated in 2009.

Austin pursued a career in public relations until he heard about “The Voice” open calls, then proceeded to wins fans over with his emotional renditions of songs by singers such as Sam Smith and Adele.

As Austin continued to advance on the show, he said he became more eager to be the winner and receive a recording contract.

Although Austin finished in fourth place on the show, he said that his life has changed simply from being on the show, and he currently is pursuing a music career.

Campton Hills’ 1st village president voted out CAMPTON HILLS – Patsy Smith, the first village president of Campton Hills was ousted in a consolidated election in April, after an extended period of political drama.

Smith was seeking a third term. Campton Hills was created by a referendum in 2007.

During the year, Smith opposed Dan Hoffman’s reappointment as police chief. She also tried to remove a trustee from the board and put Jennifer Johnsen, the village’s first professional adminis-

trator, on leave. As the board majority voted against Smith, she would veto their actions.

Board members would override her vetoes.

Some meetPatsy Smith ings lasted past midnight, with some trustees calling their own special meetings and sometimes boycotting Smith’s meetings. The board majority hired their own legal counsel, as they lost con-

fidence in longtime village attorney William Braithwaite, whom they saw as an advocate for Smith, rather than for the village.

Meetings became so contentious, that, at times, elected officials used a copy of “Robert’s Rules of Order” to allow the holder of it the right to speak uninterrupted.

Smith ultimately ran as a write-in candidate. She lost to Harry Blecker, who was voted in as the new village president.

Wredling leaves legacy at District 303 ST. CHARLES – John Wredling never lost his connection to St. Charles School District 303.

Wredling died Oct. 3 at the age of 101. He left a legacy at the school district. He served as its superintendent from 1958 to 1972. He became the namesake of Wredling Mid-

dle School, and – each year – he celebrated his birthday with students at the school, including his 101st. He also led the Pledge of Allegiance on the first day of school each year.

Wredling was involved in veterans organizations, the Boy Scouts and the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club. The St. Charles Chamber of Com-

merce honored him with the prestigious Charlemagne Award in 1997. In 2014, the Downtown St. Charles Partnership selected him as the grand marshal for the St. Patrick’s Parade.

There were many who paid tribute to Wredling after his death. District 303 Su-

perintendent Don Schlomann said Wredling’s leadership “built the foundation of excellence that we still have today.” One of Wredling’s longtime friends, Bert Eisenhour, described Wredling as a “glowing example of what America’s all about.”

Geneva woman charged in foiled Canadian shooting plot A Geneva woman made international headlines this year on accusations that she and others plotted to kill people at a Canadian mall on Valentine’s Day. Lindsay K. Souvannarath was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit arson, conspiracy to

use weapons for a dangerous purpose and unlawfully conveying threats through social media.

Resolution in Fiebelkorn animal cruelty case mals.

Fiebelkorn, 36, of Elgin, pleaded guilty to cruel treatment, a Class A misdemeanor.

As part of her plea agreement, other charges against her – two counts of violating owner’s duties, a Class B misdemeanor – were dismissed.

As the case progressed, Fiebelkorn eventually gave up most of her animals, and the rest were taken by forfeiture – horses, ducks, goats, ponies, alpacas, chickens, rabbits, don-

keys and turkeys among them.

More than a dozen were found dead, and some were euthanized when they could not be saved, officials said.

Fiebelkorn was sentenced to 24 months of probation, good time to apply to her 90 days in the Kane County Jail and $300 in fines and costs. She must undergo a psychological evaluation and cannot own or care for animals of any type during her probation.

She was sentenced to 90 days in jail in exchange for a guilty plea this month.

A modest response to a real cyberthreat THE WASHINGTON POST “Omnibus Funding Bill is a Privacy and Cybersecurity Failure,” the Open Technology Institute declared Dec. 16.

“Last-Minute Budget Bill Allows New Privacy-Invading Surveillance in the Name of Cybersecurity,” the Intercept blared.

Why did Congress, in its massive year-end budget deal, slip in a measure that Gizmodo once called “the worst privacy disaster our country has ever faced”?

Because it’s not. The Cybersecurity Act of 2015 is, in fact, a modest cybersecurity information-sharing law that tech alarmists in need of an outrage have painted as a grave threat to liberty. What these critics often fail to explain clearly is that the law is meant to clear hurdles for companies to share information on cyberthreats with the government – voluntarily. Among other things, the critics complain that the measure doesn’t require the government to obtain warrants for the information. That’s nonsensical, because the law does not call for coercive government data collection.

Moreover, the measure contains privacy protections, calling for personally identifying data to be scrubbed from the information that companies send to the government and limiting how federal agencies can use the information.

There are narrow exceptions to the privacy restrictions involving things such as responding to a threat of serious bodily harm or the exploitation of a minor. Critics also fret that the law could lead to information going from private companies directly to the National Security Agency.

In fact, the act designates the civilian Department of Homeland Security to serve as the hub for cybersecurity information reporting. President Obama opposed earlier versions of the measure out of privacy concerns. After the addition of privacy safeguards, the White House supported it and has now signed it. The reality is that the data and privacy of Americans already are seriously at risk from an onslaught of cybertheft, intrusion and disruption, some of it by foreign governments and some not. The consequences: Millions of people have suffered the loss of credit card and personal data; corporations and other organizations have lost billions of dollars in intellectual property; sensitive networks of the U.S. government have been compromised.

The country remains at risk. Most of the nation’s networks are in the private sector, but the government has sophisticated tools needed to detect and fight intruders.

The government and business world need to work together. Congress has been dragging its feet for more than three years on this question of information sharing, in part, because the libertarian-minded, online-privacy activists rancorously oppose even baby steps that involve government action.

This legislation is not a panacea for all cybercrime and disruption, but it should enable a long-overdue process of business-government cooperation.

‘Good looks’ aplenty for Vikings Geneva rolls into tourney finals

Then he delivered the knockout punch from downtown.

After scoring just seven points in the first two games of the 88th Annual Chuck Dayton Holiday tournament, Geneva senior Jordan Vedder came out and played like his first name in Tuesday’s semifinal against Marmion.

Vedder scored all 14 of his

points in the first half to break the game open early as the Vikings cruised to a 55-28 victory.

Geneva (10-2) advanced to tonight’s championship against host DeKalb.

“We try to ride guys who are having a hot hand like that, but at the end of the day, it’s about a lot of the stuff that we run,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “I don’t care who scores, it’s the type of shots we take and the shots Jordan had in the first half were all good looks at the basket.”

Vedder closed out the first quarter with three hook shots to give the Vikings a 17-9 lead. He then gave the hook a respite, proving that he was even better beyond the 3-point

arc, where he drained back-toback treys to give the Vikings a commanding 25-9 lead with 4:44 left in the first half.

“It was falling,” Vedder said. “I was in a little bit of a slump, so it felt good to come out hot and sort of set the tempo early.”

The Cadets (7-5), who never led, fell behind early and never were able to mount any sort of comeback.

Once they fell behind by 10 points on a Matt Johnston basket with 1:01 left in the first quarter, they remained behind by double digits.

“Being up by 10 the entire time is a great feeling,” Vedder said. “Knowing the other team is trailing the whole time, the

buckets even out, so we made sure we did our business early.”

A brief 5-0 run early to midway in the third quarter pulled Marmion to within 30-18, but the Cadets would not get any closer.

Marmion had a woeful night shooting, making just 10 of 46 shots from the field for just 22 percent. They struggled even more behind the arc, making just 2 of 20 attempts.

“The rim was tight for us,” Marmion coach Joe Currie said. “They shot well, so give them credit. That’s a great team. He’s got a really good team, and they’ve got length, and in some way, maybe the kids were a little nervous with

that length with their shots, but we had open looks.”

Geneva put the game away with a 12-1 run spanning the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth.

The surge closed on a steal from Drew Kraus and dunk by Johnston that made it 43-21.

Dominic Navigato then followed with his second and third 3-pointers of the quarter to make it a 49-25 game with 5:25 remaining.

Dominic Navigato finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, Johnston added 10 points and Cole Navigato had nine points for the Vikings.

Mick Sullivan paced the Cadets with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Batavia focused its defensive game plan around stopping Huntley’s Ali Andrews, a 6-foot-2 senior forward and Illinois commit, and the Bulldogs succeeded as Andrews was forced to the bench for most of the second and third quarters with foul trouble.

“I think we had a pretty decent game plan with pretty much no preparation,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said.

points and grabbing six rebounds after a 27-point performance against Montini, as Batavia defeated fifth-seeded Huntley, 48-37, in a fifth-place bracket game.

Batavia (14-3), which held Huntley (12-2) to a season low in points and handed the Red Raiders their second straight loss of the tournament, will play for fifth place against Evanston at 4:45 p.m. today.

Andrews (17 points) picked up her fourth foul with 6:19 left in the third quarter and spent most of the remaining time of the quarter on the bench as Batavia started the second half on a 10-2 run.

Batavia’s Mackenzie Foster drew the charge against Andrews, and senior Paige Renkosik picked up her fourth foul 15 seconds later as the Bulldogs built a lead as big as 15 points in the fourth.

“It’s a disappointing loss,” Huntley coach Steve Raethz said. “I thought we got off to a

good start and we weathered the storm there (in the first half), but that last minute really kind of changed momentum for them.”

Huntley led Batavia, 17-14, on a 3-pointer from Kayla Barreto with 2:03 left in the first half and 19-16, on an underneath bucket from Renkosik with 1:40 to go, but a 3-pointer from Bulldogs guard Shea Bayram and a basket and free-throw from Frazier with 9.4 seconds left gave Batavia a 22-19 lead at halftime.

“Coach told us right away after halftime, ‘We’re taking it right out of (Andrews’) hands and you’re going to get the ball in the post and try and draw that fourth foul,” Frazier said. “It ended up being an offensive foul, and it was a great play by Mackenzie.”

Nine different players scored for the Bulldogs, who got five points each from Foster, Bayram and Jessica Koch.

Knights fall to Cogs North regroups, rolls

Couple that with playing a team out to prove a point because of having to forfeit its last game, and it spelled disaster Tuesday for the Knights.

Kaneland lost its second consecutive game in the Plano Christmas Classic, falling to Genoa-Kingston, 60-52.

“We don’t have an identity yet,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said. “We are not playing the kind of defense we need to in order to produce turnovers.

On offense, we are not looking to use our height by working the ball in. We are shooting jump shots.

“I think by turning the defense up, the offense will happen and by working the ball in, it will free up our shooters

a lot.”

Kaneland (6-3) made a run in the fourth quarter, and when Dylan Vaca drained a 3-pointer with just less than four minutes to play, the Knights had closed the gap to 51-45. However, G-K’s Tommy Lucca answered with two of his game-high 21 points to squelch Kaneland’s 8-1 run.

Cogs coach Corey Jenkins said his team focused on stopping Kaneland’s scorers, Ryan David and Vaca, who recorded 10 and 12 points, respectively.

Conroy felt the Cogs’ intensity and his own team’s tough battle in Monday’s 66-62 loss to Newark contributed to the loss.

“They came out with something to prove, and I thought we were a little flat after a tough loss Monday night,” Conroy said.

Kaneland will meet Aurora Christian in the tournament’s seventh-place game at 3:15 p.m. today.

Not liking what he saw during his team’s first 16 minutes Tuesday against Resurrection at the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic tournament, St. Charles North girls coach Sean Masoncup made plenty of suggestions to improve North’s play during the 10 minutes between the halves.

The North Stars committed 15 turnovers during the first two quarters and trailed the Bandits by a basket at the break.

Masoncup’s squad implemented his recommendations in the locker room and turned the game around in the second half to beat Resurrection, 56-39.

“It was not a fun locker room after the first half. I told

them that we played one of our worst first halves all year,” Masoncup said. ”We turned the ball over too much.”

The North Stars (9-3) will play Hononegah for fifth place at 5 p.m. today.

Resurrection’s defense effectively clogged up the middle and was picking off passes to the inside during the first half.

“In the first half, we wouldn’t shoot and they were packing the middle,” Masoncup said. “Too many times were trying to giving it to Claire [Jakaitis], and then everyone would put their heads down.”

More patient passing in the second half resulted in getting the ball successfully inside for baskets. The North Stars opened the third quarter with a 16-4 run.

Jakaitis scored 11 of her game high 17 points in the third quarter, helping North to a 40-27 lead entering the fourth.

Geneva • Junior • Girls basketball Why she was selected: Loberg scored a season-high 25 points for Geneva on Monday, helping the Vikings defeat St. Joseph, 62-42, in Montini Christmas tournament consolation play.

Grace Loberg was a force inside for the Vikings against St. Joseph with her 25 points. She followed that effort with a couple big baskets and free throws in a triple overtime win on Tuesday over Rolling Meadows. The win over St. Joseph was coach Sarah Meadows’ 100th win as Geneva coach.

Loberg, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to talk about her coach’s milestone and the season thus far.

An edited transcript follows: Were you guys aware that it was coach Meadows’ 100th win?

We knew going into the Montini tournament that her next win would be her 100th, so we obviously worked really hard to make sure to get that. We lost to Evanston in the first game, but we were happy to bounce back (Monday).

Did the team do anything special for her after?

We all signed a card for her and bought her cookies.

What makes her a good coach for this program?

Literally, everything about her is amazing. For example, when we lost to Evanston, we were down by 20 points, and she did not stop coaching.

She never loses her intensity and passion for the game. She also treats every one of us the same and we can talk to her about anything.

What has been key to a good start to the season?

Teamwork is everything for us.

We don’t have one person that does everything. When we stay in our roles and do what we each need to do, that’s when we’re at our best.

“That was the longest basketball game I’ve ever been a part of,” Geneva junior post Grace Loberg said. “It was so intense and back and forth the entire time. We’d get up by a couple baskets, and they would hit a shot to get back in it. It was crazy, but it’s good that we came away with the win.”

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and my boyfriend is 22. We are in a serious relationship and we love each other very much. He wants us to get an apartment together. I’d like to cleanse my body of about 20 pounds and a friend told me that I could lose about a pound a day if I ate no food and drank only water for three weeks. I’d like to try it and get down to my desired weight, but my mom doesn’t like the idea of eating no food for three weeks. She told me to check it out and if it is considered safe, then she will go along with it. Is fasting like this safe? –

When a person fasts, he or she loses not only fat, but also muscle tissue. This could be disastrous for teens, whose bodies are undergoing rapid changes due to growth spurts.

Dear Reader: Many people know that high blood pressure and diabetes increase the risk of getting heart disease. But less well known is the fact that they are also powerful risk factors for kidney disease.

Dear Abby: You printed a letter from a woman (Nov. 25) whose husband told her while she was pregnant that, if it came to a choice, he would choose the life of the baby over hers.

Your response contained a piece of misinformation I would appreciate you correcting for your readers.

You asserted that it is Catholic policy to save the life of the baby over the mother in obstetrical emergencies.

Abby, that is one of the oldest but most persistent pieces of misinformation out there!

This inaccurate statement has been replayed even in movies in spite of repeated denials by Catholic hospitals and the professionals who render care in them.

The fact is: Catholic policy is abundantly clear on the dignity of both mother and baby, and makes no priority of one over the other. Catholic hospitals operate with the same standards of safety in maternity care and are inspected by the same organizations that inspect non-Catholic maternity programs such as the Joint Commission and the licensing agency of each state.

Catholic hospitals must adhere to the same robust standards as every other maternity service in the country.

I would appreciate it if you could assure your readers that, while this makes for good movies and novels, it is not the Catholic position. The dignity of the life of both mother and baby are critically important to all those serving in Catholic health care.
